Can't read attachments from emails

Question: Can't read attachments from emails

Evertime I try to open an attachement from a friendly email, I open it and it just shows all this mombo jumbo writing. Not the actual thing. Is there something I can check to see if it should be checked to make it work. I use windows xp and verizon with msn if the internet provider.
Thanks

Preferred Solution: Can't read attachments from emails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't read attachments from emails

Each attachment should only be opened in the software package that created it.

For instance, a .doc attachment would open in Word, or Open Office or Wordpad.

An .xls attachment needs Excel or open office.

A .jpg needs to be opened with any image editor.

If you use notepad or similar, then you will see pages of garbage text.

Please tell us what the full name of the attachment is, and what software you are using to open it with.

Computer running XP and emails read in Outlook Express;
but compacted email are in recycle bin

Computer requested I compact the emails which I have done at least twice

However, on checking the recycle bin I note that there are items in there from the OE

I have been checking my recycle bin  and have done a' compact 'of the OE but it seems that the compacting sends things to the recycle bin?

What should happen if the computer asks for the  OE to be compacted? where does it send the compact?

I am having to go through the recycle bin line by line to see what I can safely completely delete but also when I try to restore an item it seems to  make a duplicate in the recycle bin !!

I can still read the emails in OE but where should the compacted emails  actually be saved? And how if at all can I get this corrected?

How if at all can this be corrected or resolved please?

Can someone explain why nearly all my incoming emails have an attachment which, when opened, is a repeat of the email itself. This has happened since I had a hard disk replacement and also went on broadband. The odd thing is that a few of the emails arrive without the attachment. On a similar subject, sometimes incoming image files are shown in the body of the text and sometimes not. Many thanks.Sheila

Answer:Saving emails with attachments.

I can drag emails and attachments, from Outlook to other folders on my computer. Presumably they could be dragged to your CD burner also? Right clicking attachments allows them to be copied elsewhere.

To begin with, I found a Windows virus in Trash on my Linux operating system today, which I suspect I downloaded with Thunderbird a couple of weeks ago and mentioned it here, but I don't think my computer has been infected.
A few days ago Thunderbird downloaded another email with a .doc attachment, and today I got another one. One was sent from an email address ending in .es which I presume would be Estonia, and the other one looked Chinese. Both emails said the attachments are invoices, and neither contained any of my personal information other than my email address. I also have Thunderbird set to block remote content.
Out of curiosity I saved the .doc attachments to a USB stick (that the computer thinks is a CDROM - it's an old USB stick), and the 'find' command on my Linux terminal which determines the file type, says, about the one I received a few days ago:[email protected]_desktop_pc:/media/al/CDROM$ file Copy1935-12.doc

Answer:Unsolicited emails with .doc attachments

Have you read all of Lawrence's epistle, in particular on page 2, here?

The part I am interested in is:

They are typically emails that pretend to be from a business that people commonly work with. UPS, Fedex, Xerox, etc. They contain zips that pretend to be scans, business correspondences, tracking information, etc. Inside the zip files are files that have a PDF icon, but are actually executables with .exe, .scr, etc extensions. The file would be named something like shipping-confirmation.pdf.scr. As Windows does not show extensions by default, the file would just look like shipping-confirmation.pdf, so people assume its a PDF file. When you double-click on it to open it, it infects your computer and then deletes itself.

I understand your circumstances are different, but there may be a connection?

I don't unsubscribe, I just delete 'em. Occasionally I will try tracking the source with a Who Is with a Regional Registry (APNIC in Oz's case).

If an email contains what looks like a block of fairly unique text, I will block it and Advanced Search, and often come up with a hoax or scam listed at Nuketown or Urban Legends, etc.

is there anything I can do to stop these emails being downloaded?

Don't rely on ME for a quick answer, the concept of "quick Wizard" is an oxymoron, lol. But I'll look when I can.

I cannot receive emails sent to me with EML attachments. The same problem occurs both with emails sent to my normal (ISP) email address, arriving through Outlook Express, and also emails sent to a gmail account I have. The strange thing is that they arrived up until a couple of months ago without problem. The person who sends them to me can reach me at both the above addresses if the mail is text only, but if it has an EML attachment it simply doesn't arrive. Can anyone explain this? My comp details are below.
Thanks, Bill.

When I open a Word attachments in Outlook, it always shows in what looks like a Print mode or something. I have to click Close on the toolbar to return that Word doc to the normal Word view.

How can I stop this?

Thanks,

Answer:Emails with Word attachments

It sounds like your Word is set to open emailed documents in 'Reading View'.

For Word 2007 -
You can prevent Full Screen Reading view from opening automatically when you receive a Microsoft Office Word document in e-mail.
In Full Screen Reading view, click View Options.
Click Open Attachments in Full Screen to turn off the feature, and then click Close to return to Print Layout view.
Source - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100670821033.aspx

For Word 2003 -
Prevent reading layout view from opening automatically when you receive a Word document in e-mail: On the Tools menu (in Word), click Options, click the General tab, and then clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box.

Since the summer, Thunderbird (Now on version 31.2) operating on Windows 7 has been repeatedly downloading from Yahoo any email that has an attachment. Deleting popstate.dat does not cure the problem, which is only overcome by logging into Yahoo and deleting the offending email from there. Apart from being the proverbial pain in the ***, all these repeats with attachments add significantly to my download allowance. I can find numerous instances on various forums of people having similar problems, but no offered cures, apart from the popstate.dat one.

Hello...I would appreciate anyone's help on this topic.
I am currently using Excite.com for my email. When I send an email to someone with a attachment, I go through all the proper procedures and for some reason, when the person receives my email, the attachment did not come through. All they get is my letter saying, "Hey look at this picture, isn't it funny?", but there is no picture attached.

Is there anyone out there who uses Excite.com that could possible give me a clue as to what step I may be missing?
This is so hard to figure out. Funny thing is, one friend of mine DOES receive the attachments with the emails and he is also on Excite.com. All the other people who don't receive the attachments are using different ISPs (AOL, Hotmail, MSN, local ISPs, BellAtlantic.net, Optonline, etc...).

I would really appreciate someone's help with this!

Thank you so much - Mtn626

I don't know why this suddenly started happening, as it wasn't a problem before. When I get an email with a word or excel attachment, and try to open it, it says, "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
This happens in IE10 and in Chrome as well.
I can open pdf files with no problem.
If I try to attach a document to an email to send to someone, it immediately says, "Internet explorer has stopped working..."
In Chrome, this does not happen and I can send documents with no problem and they open fine on the other end.
All of this only happens in emails. I can open document outside of email with my software with no problem.
I'm going crazy! I desperately need to open a couple excel spreadsheets and I can't!

I'm running Outlook 2000 via BTConnect and I frequently get complaints from my email recipients that mail I send with an Acrobat (.pdf) attachment arrives corrupted. It arrives as a .txt file full of garbage. I can send the same attachment to myself without problems so I guess that my ISP/server is OK. The problem appears to be most prevalent when sending to overseas recipients, I've tried 'zipping' the attachment but it still doesn't work, I've also tried various settings within Outlook but I don't really know what I'm doing in there, in any case it hasn't improved the situation. Answer:Picture attachments to Emails

The answer may lie in how you are storing your pictures. Save them in folders with a title that describes their content. If you have not named the pictures, you will just get the number that the camera assigned. If you rename them, they will be easier to find.

Hi

I use Windows Live Mail installed on my PC.

Is there some way I can save the emails, including any attachments
to a folder on an external dive?

Thanks

Daniel

Answer:Saving emails with attachments

Yes you can. Windows Live Mail stored all your mail messages with extention .eml by default in :
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\YourMailAccount\inbox

If a mail message has attachments, it is also included in the message. Just copy these files to the external drive.

FYI, You can also change the mail storage location to another drive:
File->Options->Mail->Advanced->Maintenance->Store Folder

Outlook Express 2003 - will not send emails with attachments (specifically Word or Excel documents, it seems that pdf's, jpeg will go)
Operating on XP - fully updated.
Emails without attachments go when at the head of the queue - no problem
Any email with an attachment at the top of the queue just sits there trying to send.
I cannot delete it, I cannot force delete it (Shift - DEL) I cannot drag it anywhere.
However if I exit Outlook and go back in I still cannot delete it but I can move it (to Deleted items) this is before it tries to do a send/receive.
I have done repair on Office 2003 installation and reinstalled Outlook 2003.
I have set up a replacement email account and a new account - problem still persists.
I have gone in as a different user on the machine - problem persists.
Antivirus detects no problems.

I am out of ideas - any help / suggestions most welcome.

Running XPhome, with Norton Internet Security 2005, Adaware, and Spybot.1. Occasionally I need to send out (on a slow connection)several attachments with an email.NAV then spends an eternity in scanning them. As I do know that my system is secure(at this moment !) I've tried to turn off the "scan out-going mails" temporarily, and I've tried disabling NAV temporarily. Either way, the NAV pop-up appears, telling me it's scanning out-going mail.Is it ? If it is, can anyone tell me what else I can do to stop it. I've looked through the options for both NAV and the Security, but cannot find any other possibilities2. I sometimes then get a timeout due to the above problem, and Norton tells me that it hasn't sent the mail due to a dropped connection.Quote "Open the Sent folder, and re-send from there" -there appears to be no way of doing this. Hi,

So whenever my sister and my brother-in-law send me emails, the email is blank and there is only an attachment entitled "noname." There is no file extension to it. So to read emails from them, I need to download the attachment, then when I open it, I have to choose Wordpad to open it and then I can read the email. It's strange. It only happens with them, no one else. They both use Macs, and they just moved to a different place and even with the new Internet connection this happens.

The only thing I can think of...I use Gmail and they both use a University alumni account. As far as I know, they access their email through a website, not through a mail program like Eudora etc. Could that be the culprit? It's just really annoying to have this happen all the time.

Thanks.

If you are using Windows Live Mail, then to send pictures, you need to register your ID. If you look along the top, left to right, you should see a box that says something about ID?
I'm sorry, I can't remember what ID I had to use. I actually rarely use WLM, only if I want to send pictures to a particular friend. I remember having to do this before I could email pictures.
Hopefully, just doing that will rectify this issue for you.

Hi,

One of the email addresses at work receives loads of images as attachments in emails. This means that the .pst file grows rapidly.

Looking through this Website I have seen several programs that will intergrate with outlook, remove the attachments from the email and place these in a local folder and place a link to the attachment into the email.

Can anyone recommend one of these (or from anywhere else) for the job. The only think we would like it to be able to do is not touch the emails as they come into the inbox, but work on them when we have moved them to a backup outlook folder.

I am unable to download any attachments that come to me in my Hotmail account.  I have McAfee installed and as far as I know that is the only firewall I have installed.  (Someone said it may be a firewall problem.)  I am new and don't have an idea where to look for the problem.  Thank You.

Perhaps they never made it through the virus scan? You're not giving us a lot to work with, Shari.

Emails with multiple attachments/inserts (as few as 3 or 4 and usually photos),don't send for several hours if at all. Sometimes they do send but don't show in the 'sent'box so I repeat the process and sometimes multiple mailings are sent. All very frustrating. Windows 7 and Windows live mail.

Does anyone know how I can get the icons of my email attachments (the pdf icon for example) to show within the body of the text? All my attachements that I send can only be be opened with the paperclip but every now and again I'll get an email from someone and the attachment is right there in the body of the email. I'd like to be able to do that too.

Hi

We have recently upgraded from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. I have always had clip art in my signature file for my email.

Now when I send an email the recipients can see the clipart but in addition there are a few wmz files attached which cannot be open. If you double click them, it lauches windows media player but then gives an error that the skin is invald.

If I forward that email from the recipient, more files get created, now gif files are attached as well. They can be opened and are the same clipart files which are in the email signature. The pictures continue to be displayed in the email with no problem.

If I email myself, no attachement files are created.

This did not happen with the 5.5 exchange server. I was just wondering if it's a setting or something that can be configured to stop this. It's causing confusion with recipients when they think they are supposed to be able to open the attachments.

Thank you

Answer:Exchange creating wmz attachments to emails

Is the signature an HTML signature or just clip art? What program did you use to create the signature?

Also, what are the browsers in question (IE, Edge, Firefox, Chrome, etc.)?

Hi,

Upgraded both our Desktop & Laptop to Windows 10 in the past few months.
Last week I tried to access some Outlook emails that were more than two years old, the attachments & emoticons do not appear. This is on both PC's & the same result using Edge, IE or Chrome.

I installed Windows Live Mail & now I can see all the attachments & emoticons. Forwarded some of the emails from Live Mail to myself & now in Outlook the attachments/emoticons all appear as well (all three browser Edge, IE & Chrome). So say for instance I have a 2 & 1/2 year old email in a Outlook folder that will not display attachments/emoticons but the very same email just forwarded from Live Mail to my Outlook inbox now displays all attachments & emoticons

Tried inspecting elements but really have no idea what I'm doing. See msgs regarding HTML, Java Script in Edge? Don't have either Java or Silverlight installed, guess the newer browsers are moving towards HTML.

So can anyone help me to understand what is happening?

Thank you as always

Answer:attachments for old emails don't show up in outlook

When I inspect element on these pictures & emoticons it looks to me as if they are associated img file type.
According to the Default File Type Associations - Restore in Windows 10 Tutorial I see img file type has a description of CD or DVD image file no Default App.

So grasping at straws here am wondering if I point the .reg for img to Microsoft Edge as the html file types are - might that possibly open the pictures inside Outlook? How would I point img file type to Microsoft Edge?
In fact when I browse Choose Default Apps by File Type in Settings I cannot find .img? Goes right from .imesx to .inc. Should there be .img there?

Not very good with registry, sorry.

thank you

My email works without a problem until I try to send a message with an attachment of about 1Mb or larger. It then tries to send it and appears to reach 100% and then reverts to about 60% and tries again. This goes on indefinitely. THe message remains in the outbox and never shows in sent messages. However it is actually being sent and the recipient continues to receive copies of the message until I delete it from the outbox. (Imagine how irritating that must be)I have Windows XP Pro and use Office XP for email. There are no viruses found when I scan the system.Has anyone else come across this problem?

I'm unable to access HTML documents that arrive as attachments to EMails which I manage via Outlook Express on a Windows 2000 OS. Each such document shows as "present" when I click on the paper clip, but appears "greyed out" and is completely unaccessible. I can access other attachments, such as MSFT Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. I can also receive photos in .jif format that I've test-attached from another PC, but, interestingly, when they arrive at the Win2K/OE system, the .jif file is "enclosed" within the body of the EMail, and although still shown in the attachment list (via the paper clip), its name, like that of the html file, is "greyed out".

Anyone come across this, and know how I can overcome it?

Answer:Can't access HTML attachments to OE EMails

Open Outlook Express>Tools>Options>Security tab and uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that potentially could be a virus", click Apply/OK.

I'm running Outlook 97 with Windows 2000, computer is on a NT server at work. About 90% of emails I receive are arriving as attachments. If it's a simple text email, I'm receiving a .txt (Notepad) attachment; if it's an html email, I'm receiving a .htm attachment. I think I've tried every option or combination of options to fix it, and I can't believe that it's a compatibility problem with Outlook/Office 97 and Windows 2000--although I think I'm the only person in the office with W2000.

At 2:10 pm, voila, outlook is there. I try to send an email with an attachment and Outlook won't upload it. I tried numerous times with no success. I had a lot of updates that needed to be done so I ran all of them, restarted and tried again to send my email. No luck. Can someone please help? What should I do or where should I look?

I have a friend who has just installed explorer 6. Now everytime she downloads an email with an attachment the attacment is being deleted. Any idea why and how to solve this. Thanks.

Answer:attachments deleted on received emails.

Open Outlook Express, go to Tools > Options > Security, untick 'do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus'Note that you should have a decent anti-virus programme installed if you do the action outlined above ( I suggest Norton anti-virus).To bypass the attachment block for a message that you absolutely know to be safe, select the message and choose to Forward it - the attachment will then be revealed. The behaviour has changed, because the new version of Outlook Express that is downloaded with IE6 has a higher default security setting.

I have two computers, one running XP and outlook express, and the other running windows 7 and Outlook 2010. Both are Pop3 accounts. Recently emails with attachments from a particular correspondent have not got through to either computer. The attachments are contract notes, and are PDF documents. I have queried the correspondent, and their reply has got through, but obviously without any attachments. They have re-sent the contract notes, but they still do not get picked up by OE or Outlook 2010. Emails from other people with attachments seem to get through fine.

I receive my emails through BT, and when I look on their website, the missing emails are there. They just won't download to OE or Outlook 2010.

This is a new problem, as previously emails with attachments from the concerned person came through fine. I have also not recently changed any settings on my account.

Obviously something has changed, but I am at a loss to know what.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Answer:Emails with attachments fail to download

That particular correspondant - Can they send you a test email with no attachments? See if that comes through.

If that comes through, ask them if they can send a small attachment as a test (kilobytes rather than megabytes).

Let's see if the problem is with the size of the attachments, or something else.#

I can't find any answers via the AVG Grisoft website on this one, so wondered if any of you could explain what's going on..........

I recently dumped Norton AV and have installed AVG, personal free edition. Everything is fine, but I notice that many - but not all - emails which arrive in my inbox have the little attachment icon (a padlock) next to them. When I open the email there is nothing at all strange about them - and there are no attachments to open..
Can anyone shed light on this...??? Each email I receive has a note on the end saying that AVG has checked the incoming message and it has no virus etc., but every email has that, not just the ones that appear with phantom attachments!

Thanks in advance!

Lulabelle

Answer:OE shows attachments with incoming emails

Hi Lulabelle,

"Outlook Express doesn't show the email certification properly in HTML formated emails.. they show as an attachment. You can configure this if you wish in the Email Scanner properties by removing the checkmark next to both options labeled "Certify mail" if you wish or use the other combination of options allowed to you there."

Open your avg test centre, double click on e-mail scanning, then click on configure, uncheck the box's marked certify mail.Click OK to get out of avg.
I've been having the same problem myself, it looks like it doesn't remove the clip from old messages, i'm waiting for mail to see if it works.

I am flying a little blind here, as my sister described this problem to me on the phone, and I have yet to get her onto this site.

She has Verizon DSL, and I think is using the email software that comes from Verizon. They recently had a computer problem with viruses, had someone resolve it (I don't know what the someone did), but ever since then she cannot open attachments on emails. It is not clear to me what happens other than a blocked message. When I send an email less than about 250 kb, it goes off without a hitch. However, when I send an email with a bigger attachment it stays in my outbox and appears to be continually resent on a loop, with recipients getting numerous copies of the email. I have Bit Defender for virus protection - is there something wrong with its configuration, as it seems to be scanning the outgoing emails slower than it takes to send them? I have set Bitdefender not to scan outgoing emails, however.

Answer:Sent emails with large attachments repeating

Sounds like you have a 'mail block'.

I have been the 'recipient' of this. All I got was the same email constantly. I resolved it by deleting it directly at my ISP. ie. I logged onto my ISP and looked at mail on there rather then 'OE' and deleted the large file.

This may be the problem. I think the limit of email attachment in OE (if that's what your using) is 10MB. If you need to send larger files you might want to try msn messenger, you can send huge files over that.

I hope this helps

I'm sure a more experienced member will help you soon.

Every time I try to open My Documents file to send an attachment with an email, it says it cannot open because it cannot find program ACDSEE.EXE.

Also, everytime I want to send a page by email, my system goes directly to Netscape and won't let me send attachments with email via Yahoo or Hotmail addresses.

Help! I'm really feeling stupid here. Thanks....Pat

Answer:Cannot Open Attachments On My Emails Or My Documents

It sounds like you once had ACDSEE on your computer; this is, as I remember, a graphics editor application. You will need to change your FILE ASSOCIATION, if you have perhaps deleted the ACDSEE application..Go to the file in question. Let's say it is a JPEG.Right click on the file.Choose Properties from the drop down menu. In the General tab, you will see the file type, and the application used to open it. Here, you can change the application by clicking on, oddly enough for Windows, Change. (I'm using XP for the example, but all versions are similar).Another menu will open to show you the available applications. I recommend using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, but you may have a favourite graphics editor listed and want to use it. At the bottom, make sure there there is a check in the box next to "always use the selected program to open this kind of file." Thereafter, all JPEG files will open with whatever you have selected. You may, to move to the second question, have to physically go to Yahoo's E-mail page, compose your message there, and then attach the file to your message. If you are using a POP E-mail application, you must set up a separate account for Yahoo or Google. I hope this helps.Regards,John

When I send an email with a picture attachment, how can I stop Outlook Express opening the picture in massive size under the email text. The recipient can open it themselves by clicking on the attachment title, so why does it open itself within the email. If the recipient wants to print the email, the picture uses up most of the cartridge ink, it's so big! The ones I recieve also have the attachment picture opened in the text area and it seems pointless but I can't discover how to stop it from happening!

Answer:Solved: picture attachments to emails.

Thunderbird has an option in the View menu to display or not display attachments inline. Maybe OE has that option also.

If you want to send smaller pictures, send smaller pictures. You can use Paint or most any photo editing application. I find the "Image Resizer right click for Vista & XP" to be most convenient for this purpose: http://blogs.msdn.com/cumgranosalis/pages/image-resizer-download-page.aspx

XP, sp3, Firefox, cable

Finally gave in and updated to the new FF. In spite of losing an add-on that wasn't compatible,
and was reluctant becuz I've had email problems in the past when updating browsers.

Anyway, did the update, seemed to actually work OK this time.

When I went into my Yahoo email (the "New" email, not Classic or the Beta) I found that
when attempting to forward an email with an attachment, the attachment didn't forward
with the email. And it's not a large attachment.

I had this problem a long time ago but not again until I updated to the new Firefox.

I looked to see if there was something that needed to be checked or unchecked, or
something like "forward with attachments" but couldn't find any, incl in the email help.

Others had asked the question in Yahoo email Help but not gotten any reply that fixed the problem.

In the Help FAQ's, all it says is to have the rec'd email open, click Forward, and any attachments
rec'd with the email will go along with the Forward. Nope.

Thanks!

whatever attachment i receive it opens as read only.Word, Excel, they are both read only. When i checked the recipients origianl documents thay are not read only.Any clues

Answer:Attachments - Read only

Try selecting one of the files in explorer (or whichever file manager you use), then right-click the file, select properties (gen at the bottom) and see if the read only box, under attributes, is ticked. If it is then untick it and you should be able to alter the file.Hope this helps.

When I was using Outlook Express, I was able to view jpg attachments on emails by simply scrolling down.  Now I am using Microsoft Outlook and have to open each jpg attachment individually to view the pics.  I much prefer the convenience of scrolling down to view the jpg attachments on emails.  Can I change my Microsoft Outlook to work the same way as Outlook Express?

Hi all - I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem that has suddenly occurred.
I use Outlook Express 6 with Windows XP Pro 2002, and have had no problems for about 2 years.

Recently, my email started acting up. I can still receive all emails, and send regular emails, but when I try to send an email with an attachment, like a picture, Outlook attempts to send it in about 68 parts. None of the 68 emails received worked, and the attachments come up as name.jpg.dat. My McAfee VirusScan would pop up, trying to stop all the emails, and say that I may have a worm, because of the multiple emails being sent.

I did an internet search of this problem, and found a forum which discussed this as a bug with the McAfee software, which was causing the email to be sent in multiples.
There was no perfect fix for the problem, except to completely uninstall McAfee VirusScan from your computer.

I have now completely uninstalled McAfee (I will be getting Norton). But the problem remains.
Either the solution (uninstalling McAfee) didn't work, or I have a completely different problem. The only other possibility I found was a mention of an after effect of the Happy virus, preventing users from sending emails with attachments, but it said nothing about sending multiple emails.

Anyone have any idea???
