Preferred Solution: a link in outlook open "Locate Link Browser"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:"locate Link Browser instead of URL site

Try repairing Office.

This ought to repair these file associations:

Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Control Panel .

In Control Panel , double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

In the list of installed programs, click to select either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office , depending on how you installed Outlook.

Click Add/Remove .

After the setup screen appears, click Repair Office .

Click Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation , and then click Install .

Good luck,

Normally when you try to send an email from a link from firefox via "file->send link", your default email program automatically opens assuming it's not already open. If Outlook 2010 is already open, no problem; it works fine. If it's closed, I get the error below about a dll error telling me to reinstall outlook 2010. if I manually open Outlook, I can then email the link.

If I insert the Office 2010 disc to try a repair, I get an other error (below) saying 2003 was not uninstalled properly and to uninstall it before I can do the repair (gotcha-catch22-can't get there from here, etc....). I see nothing in add/remove to indicate there is a trace of Office 2003 remaining. I can send screen shots of the registry if desired, but see nothing there indicating 2003 was not removed fully, but could be wrong. I'm fine with surgical edits if necessary.

I've been running Office 2010 for a year with no other problems beyond this and it's possible this existed from day 1 and it just took me a while to notice it..

Any suggestion on how to either fix the dll issue directly, or deal with the 2003 uninstall hopefully without uninstalling 2010 and starting over?

Am new to this so i apologies if its been bought up before or if i have posted it in the wrong place.

I have recently set up my g mail account to work through MS outlook 2002. It works fine except for when i click on a link to a website.
Most of the time, instead of opening Internet Explorer (version 6) and the website, it opens a "locate link browser" box.
I have tried to rectify it as recommended by Microsoft - see - to no avail.
I have also tried:

Go to control panel, folder options, file types tab. Scroll down to the "(NONE) URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols" ... click advanced ... click edit and make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box: ?C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe? -nohome
The same applies for URL:Gopher
DDE should be set to: ?%1?,,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL
Run each following line individually... Start ? Run then type
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

Which worked for a while - i think until the next time i restarted MS Outlook. I tried doing it all again and this time it hasnt made a difference.
Can any one help out here? I am using Windows XP BTW.
Many thanks.

When I click a mailto link from an email in Outlook 2003 (using Windows XP) a dialog box pops up with a title of "Locate Link Browser" looking for me to search for an executable programme file to open it with.

I searched for Outlook and double clicked it...THIS WAS WRONG!!!!

Now when I click a mailto link, it opens up a second session of Outlook!!

The links used to work fine and then just stopped working. I have followed the online examples for "file types" and checked that everything is correct in the "registered file type" for URL:MailTo Protocol

Can you help me to locate the correct link browser so that a new email opens up rather than a second session of Outlook. I can't get the dialog box back up to select an alternative and can't find where I would change the link browser setting.

Every time I click on a link in an email in Outlook, a "locate link browser" window appears.  There's a lot of help on the web to fix it for Win XP, but those steps don't appear to work for Windows 7.Here are some URL's of what I've tried already: of these link refer to the DDE options in the advanced settings, but in Windows 7, the Control Panel's "Set Associations" screen doesn't have any advanced options.)The "locate link browser" window is asking for an exe file...  so, I pointed the "locate link browser" window to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe" and the window isn't coming up anymore, but it just launches IE and my home page...  not the link that was in the email.  I also tried setting the default browser as Firefox (using the Control Panel's "Set Associations")  .  That works fine.  the links from Outlook emails open fine in Firefox, but when I switch the default browser for the HTTP protocol (using the Control Panel's "Set Associations")  back to IE, it goes back to launching IE and my home page and not the link that was in the email.Any idea on how to resolve this?

IE6 upgraded to IE8

When attempting to "send link" or "send page" via email, IE6 and IE8 (upgraded to 8 in an attempt to resolve problem) produce error message stating that I need to set Outlook or Outlook Express as the default mail client. I use Thunderbird and have set IE to Thunderbird in Tools/Options as the mail client. Still, IE will not open Thunderbird when attempting to send a URL. Had this problem with IE6 and IE8 after upgrade.

so i need a little help getting rid of this issue thats been happening for awhile now. a few days ago this pop up started appearing on startup and then it opens again after some time has passed. there doesnt seem to be any condition where i can predictably recreate it, it just pops up unexpectedly and ,more often than not, kicks me out of fullscreen mode on the applications i use. any help is appreciated

Answer:"No Apps Can Open This Link (res)" Repeated pop ups issue

Try this, see if you can identify what is generating the error:

Download and run ProcessExplorer. It does not need to be installed.

Drag-and-drop target to find an image. If you're not sure which application corresponds to which image in Process Explorer, click and drag the little gun sight icon on the Process Explorer toolbar, and drop it on any visible window to find out what process/image it is.

Once the error message is on the screen, start ProcessExplorer and drag the target icon and drop it on the error message window. It will show the process that generated that window highlighted in blue in the PE window.

Then use msconfig Startup (or Taskmanager Startup) and Services tabs to find and disable that process.

Somehow I've lost the file association between .htm/.html and IE/Firefox. Firefox is my default browser, but when I click on an html link in an email (Outlook Express) the window that opens is "Compaq Owners Documents," rather than a Firefox window. I've tried re-installing Firefox with no improvement. This APPEARS to have begun right after I installed IE7 Beta (although I seldom use the program). Firefox operation seems to be normal otherwise. Any ideas how I should track this down? Thanks --

Answer:Clicking on a link in Outlook Express brings up "Owners Documents"

Don't know if this will help or not.

Open your Control Panel, double click on Folder Options, review all your settings. Pay attention to the tab File Types. Review all of the File Extension Types. Look for the file extension that you are having problems with. Click on the Advanced button to review the settings. You may find your problem by accident like I did once. If not, I'm sure some of the experienced members will be able to help.

I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0 right now.
My problem is that I cannot open links in new windows when I right click on the link, and click the "Open Link in New Window" option. Sure, a new window comes up but the area in which the page is suppose to load in seems to be blank and frozen. The address bar does not contain the address for the page.

This problem just suddenly started happening out of the blue, and the only way for me to actually get it to load is click stop then refresh.

I just ran into another unreasonable restriction on access to my own computer in Windows 7. When using MS Outlook 2003 this evening, I tried to open a link inside an email from a forum moderator. It contains instruction on how to change my password after having to reset it. A message pops up saying "this operation canceled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your system administrator".

This is moronic I am the only user on this computer and am the administrator. I don't have a clue on how to fix this.

I am also blocked from opening folders in some cases too. For example, I want to access my program application data and get a similar message.

This is the stupidist thing that I have seen Microsoft do in many years. Are their programmers morons or just not able to realize that real people will be running their programs and we are not all located in a huge room with administrators running all over the place.

Is theire a way to overcome this idiocy?

then I click the name of the person or another Group that I want to share with

it has a "via GroupABC" (Remove) on it

so if you share it on say another group or a friend's page, it would read:

then the story (link)

now, how do you to that "Via GroupABC" trick?

Can you scan a link to see if the page it directs to has any virus's or threats? Thanks.

Answer:Is there a way to "scan" a link to a website or page to see if it is a "threat"?

There are some tools you can use.

First is WOT if you don't use it. It gives you a decent indication on whether a site is safe. Its an addon for your browser. Just download for whichever one you use: Green circle means good, Red means you probably shouldn't go onto the site. Yellow...proceed with caution

Another thing you can do is go here:
-Select URL and paste the site address on there. It'll list a number scanners and if they come up clean.

I went to the following link (from the "Please read here first..." thread);dl=item10 but was unable to find a download for "hijack this". Does anyone have an alternative link to find Hijack this?

Thank you

A message appeared saying this website wants to run 'ietag.dll' from Microsoft Corp. Is that ok?

P.S. The problem is an increadibly SLOW start up time and "fairly" frequent freezing of the screen (enough to be very frustrating). The computer never goes into hibernate either and I've set it up to do so numerous times. Sometimes, after clicking the IE icon, nothing happens until I click it again a few minutes later. However, it then opens up 2-3 IE windows instead of the original one that I wanted.

I can't get a hijack this log because I can't find the hijack this download. Does the download via the described link, show up for other people?

After I upgraded to Windows 10 I am unable to click on any link in Outlook 2003. I get a popup that says "Locate link browser". I searched for a solution and read that I needed to associate it with IExplore.exe. After doing that, now whenever I click a link it opens IExplore to my home page. Can anyone tell me how I can resolve this error and get it to go to the URL rather than just opening IExplore?

Instructions I found were these but don't seem to apply to Windows 10:

On the desktop, double-click My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.In the Registered File Types list, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol, click Advanced, and then click Edit.In the Actions box, type open.In the Application used to perform action box, locate Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe), and then click Open.In the Application box, type IExplore, and then click OK.

Answer:Locate link browser

Officially only outlook 2007 and above is compatible with windows 10, I suppose outlook 2003 should run though as long as it's compatiblity mode could be adjusted.

When you say you click a link, are you talking about inside of outlook 2003 or the shortcut for outlook 2003?

I just installed IE7 on XP SP2. Now whenever I click on a link in an email in Outlook, a search box appears titled "locate link browser". It defaults to showing My Documents folders. This behavior only started when IE7 was installed. How do I get past this? Thanks for your help!

Answer:Locate Link Browser?

Hi Randy.
Do you have more then one browser installed and\or is IE the default?
Haven't seen that with IE7 and Outlook (haven't recieved an e-mail with a hyperlink yet) but it's asking you to choose a browser to open the link with. When it does that, navigate to IE's executable (Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe) and click ok. I would imagine there would be an "Always open with" option there as well.

Probably means you haven't got a default browser set, so your OpSys doesn't know which browser to open.
which email client (Outlook Express, Thunderbird, WLM, or is it Webmail) and which OpSys do you have (XP, W7, Vista)? and which Browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox) do you want it to open?

Hi everybody,

I recently followed Microsoft to this wonderful Windows-10 offer.
I didn't much like it, so I restored an image made just before I upgraded to Windows-10.
Image is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
This image also contained the many Microsoft Nags telling me "I'm ready to go".

I thought I got rid of most of those.

Now I find that using the Windows Update utility still lists the "Upgrade to Windows10 Home" link, as an optional update. I don't want to do that.

My issue is: No matter how I try to ignore that link, (hiding the link, checkBox OFF), Windows Update will always begin with the "Upgrade to Windows-10" ... all 3GB of it.

So, if anyone can help me get rid of not only that Optional Update link from my life, but anything else that might be lurking, I would be grateful. As a matter of fact, I will choke down a healthy shot in your honour.

My google skills are failing me. Someone introduced me to content controls, which are lovely, and when I asked them if it was possible to fill in one and have the others auto-fill, they showed me how using "paste as link" could do that, as long as I refreshed (I made a shortcut to "update all links" on my quick access toolbar and use that). My first question is, I have just been using the default "as:" selection of "HTML Format" when using paste as link - is there any reason to switch or will that work best?

My second question is that I had some trouble once I thought I had it right. I'd get the file working fine, set it as a template for future documents, and as soon as I did that I'd get "Error! Not a valid link." when I tried updating links. I finally (I think?) narrowed it down to the fact that I was changing the name of the file (I'd take one of my existing templates, make a copy with the word 'test' on the end, try out the paste as link thing, and if it worked like that, I'd delete my old template, remove 'test' off the new filename, and that's when it stopped working). Is this right? If so I'm wondering if there's a quick fix to make the links work again, or, if I decide to change the filename in the future, do I have to re-"paste as link" the entire document?

Thanks for your help.

CNN.COM/HLN announced earlier today that an E-mail message has appeared in the wild that contains a link and tells E-mail recipients they can watch a video of Casey Anthony's "confession" about the death of her daughter, Caylee.

Clicking the link allows hackers to place malware in your computer and possibly gain access to personal information.

I think I saw that on Facebook yesterday. Only the O in Anthony was a 0 (zero).

Hi - I need help please. When I Google something and click on the link from Google it either redirects me to another site (not the one I requested) or it says there was an error and it cannot connect to "". I've run Spybot, McAfee, Avira, and removed some things but still the redirecting continues. And it's always when I click on a link through another page/search engine (does not redirect if I type in the link directly into the address bar). If you could help I would SINCERELY appreciate it as I have no idea what to look for. Attached is the Hijack This log I ran tonight. Thank you in advance for all your help!

Recently setup a new desktop and after installing Windows 7 and setting up I noticed my user folder is named "UsersFiles" in my start menu (as well as on the desktop). The folder path itself is correct and I've tried creating a new user but that user has the same issue. If I can't fix this without reinstalling I can just hide the links and ignore it but I would rather fix it. I've poured over search topics, registry entries, and other options but just cannot seem to find a solution.

Answer:start menu user folder link named "UsersFiles"

Hello and welcome greatwroth mate if you haven't already try these in safe mode < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
if no go these might be worth a run just to eliminate the basic stuff
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(If you are running Kaspersky security it might rant about ADW just ignore to or disable Kaspersky for the duration of the ADW scan)

I ran an ethernet cable from one of the back of the modem to the WAN port on the back of the TP-Link wireless router. (TP-WR541G) I then power cycled the modem (about 3-4min) and then plugged in the router. Now I can't get an internet connection when connectiong through the router. The router's status page says that the router is "Obtaining network parameters..."

The router's leds indicate that everything is running fine.
PWR= Solid Green
SYS= Slowly blinking green
WLAN= Blinking Green
WAN= Fast blinking green
Port 2 (PC)= Solid green

Network connections in control panel indicates that the network is connected and firewalled.

Hey everybody,
Thank you for the help in advance. I have my computer set to hotmail as my server when I want to send an email link to a page I am on. My address book does not automatically fill in when I address the sendee. How do I do this, and/or how do I change it to gmail, where I believe, (whether correctly or not,) that the address book will populate when I type the first few letters of the sendee's address? Thanks again for your expertise. Nike

I tried to find an existing thread about this but couldn't.

I have two computers set up in a home network. One is a desktop running XP Pro x64 Edition. The other is a laptop running XP Home. Both have SP2. The desktop has Eset Smart Security which has antivirus/firewall/spam blocker. The laptop has Eset Antivirus which has no firewall or spam blocker and uses Windows Firewall. They connect through a Dlink DI 524 Rev C Router. The router firewall has default settings. Both computers have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled and each has the IP address of the other one set up as a WINS Server.

Each computer has files that it shares with the other. The desktop shares it's printer with the laptop. The files that show up in "My Network Places" share correctly and the printer works.

The problem is after I restart the laptop with the desktop running the "View workgroup computers" link in the desktop gives this Error Message:

"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

I can't access the workgroup computers.

The shares in "My Network Places" and the printer still work. Everything works right in the laptop.

Then if I restart the desktop with the laptop running everything works correctly again.

I have tried this with a stand alone Antiviru... Read more

Full title of tutorial is Link Microsoft Account to Windows 10 Digital License Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

We have a bunch of Win 10 Pro systems. All were upgrades from Retail Win 7 or Win 8. Three systems have just one Win 10 install each, and one multi-booting system has three separate Win 10 installs, in separate disk partitions. All these upgrades were created with just local accounts (for privacy reasons).

Last week, I re-installed the motherboard in one system after a repair (same board, just some chips replaced, maybe?) I had to re-activate. And with only a local account, I had to do an activation over the phone. I don't want to risk losing a license, so I want to get all these systems covered in a Microsoft Account before something else goes wrong.

So I read this this entire tutorial and I would like to validate if the following are true for the Creators Update:
I can still use my local account for my daily work, as long as I create a separate admin account that I use to link the digital entitlement to a Microsoft Account. For that separate admin account, the password that I use to log into my system has to be the same as the Microsoft Account. If I have more than one admin account on a system, only one admin account can link that digital entitlement to a Microsoft Account.I can use just one Microsoft account to register with Microsoft all the digital entitlements across all our systems. That is, I can "manage" all my entitlements ... Read more

My problem just appeared a few weeks ago. I have always accessed my internal back up hard drive through "My Computer" in order to save files to it or download from the slave to the master. I have gotten no error messages. I have replaced the IDE cable. I have switched both hard drives and no matter which one is slave, it is not detected. I have made them both "cable select" and it does not help. My system recognizes my external hard drive.

I have a VPR 240r, with 2.4 gigabyte, 1 gigabyte of RAM, XP Home edition. Current master HD is WD 320 and slave is the original WD HD 100. The external is a Seagate 120 HD with USB port and separate power supply.

The device manager recognizes the slave drive and says it's drivers are up to date and that it is functioning fine. Disk Clean and Disk Defrag recognize my internal back up HD and will clean and defrag. My Acronis Image 10 program will recognize it and I can clone or back up through Acronis. I just can't get "My Computer" to recognize it so I can utilize it. I'm no expert and any suggestions would be welcome.

http : // site . net / song . mp3

Is there any way to get a direct link (....mp3) to a sound file? (Free)

Answer:How to get a free "" link with a software ?

Most of the websites protect their content there is no way to a get direct link for an mp3 file (ex. myspace).

But if a website chooses to store an mp3 openly, you can get is easily.
For example this page here: How to Embed MP3 Audio Files In Web Pages With Flash Player

Open this page in Internet Explorer, Right click inside the webpage- View source (in other browsers menu line sounds simular) and just search for a link to an mp3. In our case that would be
If you do not want to look inside the code you can install an plugin “Adblock Plus” for Mozilla Firefox.
It has a menu OPEN BLOCKABLE LIST ITEMS. You would be able to find an openly store mp3 there as well.

Link above actually has tips for embedding audio files in blogs.

I tried to move my Documents folder to another partition, but stupidly specified E:\ instead of E:\Documents. I moved it back to the default location and fixed the Quick Access link but can't fix the folder link in "This PC".

The icon is E:\ instead of Documents, and it points to the E:\ folder.

How can I fix this? I assume I need the correct registry entries. I tried the tutorial to remove/restore the folder, but the hacks only hide or show the folder in "This PC". I don't want to remove/hide it anyway.

Answer:File Explorer: "This PC" Documents folder link corrupt

SteveX said:

The icon is E:\ instead of Documents, and it points to the E:\ folder.

On further investigation the problem is actually that the property type of the "folder" has been changed from a System Folder to a Local Disk.

Yes, I know I should have taken a backup, but in my defence I am working on what was my daughter's boyfriend's laptop and I just assumed System Restore had been activated (perhaps the upgrade to Windows 10 disabled it). Also, I did create a recovery drive but have only just discovered using it would delete installed programs and would probably return the laptop to factory state (Win 7) because there is an OEM recovery partition.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Please!

This question is not for my computer and I do not currently have access to the computer in question. My dad's computer is the issue. He has Windows 10 and is using Outlook. When I went to his home to help him clean up some computer issues, he showed me something I could not fix, nor can I find it anywhere online.
When he receives an email from, for example, a newspaper he reads online, it will give him a couple of sentences from an article and then the commonly used "read more" link. But when he clicks it, the document search box pops up in the top left hand corner, asking for a filename that is an executable.
When I hover over the "read more" link it shows the correct address to the newspaper's website. I tried using the "read more" link on other email messages that would connect him to other websites and the same thing occurred. I ended up putting a link to his newspaper on his desktop and told him to go there to read the articles he wants to read until I could figure out what is going on with his computer. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very appreciative. Thank you.

New member here so bear with me...........Lately, when I'm on a .com website and click the "contact us" button for more information, and it happens to be a link to a hidden email address, I get a blank blue screen pop up.   I can close the screen by right clicking the blank button on the bottom--then close--and it goes away.    After that, if I right click the "contact us" box in the web site and click "copy" then it puts the hidden email address on the clipboard and I can manually paste it in my email.    Is there a way I can go back to the way it used to be?Edit---Now that I've seen some sample medium-blue screens in a search, the blue screen I get is lighter and more blue/green if that helps.

Answer:Blank blue screen when clicking a "contact us" link

I have a 2GB flash drive that I have been using regularly for the last 6 months. Today I copied some files off of our old Mac (OS9), but when I tried to open the drive on my laptop, I got this message:

Cannot find script file "F:\main.vbs"
* I can insert graphic files from the drive through other programs (I inserted a graph into PowerPoint).

* If I left click the drive and "explore" OR "Open as portable media device..." I can access all of the files.

* The (left click) option to open the drive now says `ÚŅa(O) instead of Open. (the a is superscripted, but I couldn't get it to paste correctly).
I don't know if using it on the Mac had anything to do with it, but they did happen an the same time.

Any thoughts? As long as I can still use it, I suppose it's fine, but it would be nicer if I could just double click to open it.

Have an issue with one of my browsers, SBC Yahoo in particular. If I get a web address embedded in an Email I can't highlight it and get to the site. The computer stops responding in the browswer application.

If I type an address in Word and then come back and click on it then it takes me directly to address.
So, in my particular application in paragraph one for some reason the link can't be made and the browers "not responding".

Answer:Solved: clicking on internet link leads to "not responding"

I am not quite sure what you mean by one of my browsers
If that browser is Internet Explorer, try these and see if any help:

A) Start with the easiest and see if it works:
IE->Tools->Internet Options->Programs Tab.
Click Reset web settings button.

B) Make sure you disable all popup blockers and see if that is the cause.

C) One or more of the following DLLs might be improperly registered.

1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

5. Repeat, substituting each of these additional DLLs:
Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

D) If that doesn't work:
For Windows version (Win 98/ME/2000/XP) - Download iefix:

Tried a different USB port. Same message. Restarted, same message. Re-installed drivers, same message. Tried on a different computer also running windows 10, adapter works fine. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could troubleshoot my problem further?

Hi, when logging on I get the message "The ordinal 685 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll". Only the wallpaper shows. Task manager opens fine. Answer:"The ordinal 685 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll"

iertutil.dll is related to Internet Explorer. I'd error check the drive. I'd also install Firefox just to have it just in case. Then uninstall Internet Explorer, then reinstall it. Make sure to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8. If you need to run a system file checker ( sfc /scannow ) you can always borrow a CD from someone as long as it's the same version (home, pro, basic).

IE8 "Send Link (and Pictures) by Email" Function No Longer Works.

I have had this issue using other Operating Systems as well. I've had this issue using Firefox as well as different versions of Outlook (Express, Mail and now 2007)

I believe the IE/Outlook link gets broken after I ran ASC (Advanced System Care).

Is this an Internet Explorer issue or an issue with Outlook ?

How do I fix this issue ?

Answer:IE8 "Send Link by Email" Function No Longer Works...

Since you mentioned that you used advanced system care, I think that is causing the problem, turn it off. I would not use it in the future.

The only protection that you need, and toavoid many problems, is Microsoft Security Essentials. and Malwarebytes. You do not need anything else.

Just use the protection I have named and do the routine, easy maintenace.

If you need help just ask.

I have a D-Link DIR-625 (H/W Ver B2, Firware Ver 2.23) and am trying to set up the Access Control so that I can restrict Internet connection from midnight til morning (to keep my teenage kids from staying up half the night on the Internet, Facebook etc!)

It was removed because it created more issues than benefits, some Appguard's users used it without understanding what it does then complain about AG blocking everything.
There is no chance it will be shared anymore.

Users will have to do it themselves by learning how to use AG.

I understand that this Windows service has something to do with maintaining (keeping) links to files on a network pointing in the right direction. I'm currently disabling this Windows service, seeing as I most probably don't need it (I only run a simple home network using a router).

I hope this doesn't affect the junction-point functionality or the NTFS file system in any other way. I know that Windows 7 uses hard links extensively for example.

I'm pretty sure it's safe to disable in my case. I'm just looking for a confirmation / second opinion. Would disabling this service harm the Windows installation in any other way? I mean besides losing network links updating.

I'm posting in the "tweaking" area of the forum because this is what I'm trying to do. Disabling stuff in Windows for the sake of performance.

Please don't answer with a simple "it is not recommended to mess with system settings" or things like that, unless you can tell me what would go wrong precisely. I'm expecting answers, specifics. Thank you.

Answer:"Distributed Link Tracking Client" service and NTFS junction points

The issue is that nobody can tell you precisely what disabling this service will do. The reason being that Microsoft has never fully documented what each service does. Do not try to read to much into the name. Many services do more that is documented - anywhere. Nobody can tell you for certain that disabling this service will not have a negative impact on your system. Since the performance benefits from doing this are essentially zero I would leave it alone.

I have had bad experiences from disabling a service I thought was unnecessary - but was.

It appears that some AV products will not function properly if this service is disabled. There areprobbaly others.

My sister and I both were having random freezes with Windows 10 Anniversary... my sister said it was most noticeable when she'd be typing something, then everything would stop, and then after about 30 seconds, the typed characters would come out in a rush. Hers was a pretty powerful Dell i7 notebook with discrete NVidia graphics.
I was having the same issue on an AMD APU-based ultrabook... great little machine that has served me very well... until it started freezing like hers. I couldn't pinpoint the problem: I of course updated all the drivers to the latest and looked for any devices in Device Manager that had the dreaded yellow caution triangle, but everything looked OK.
I saw a youtube video that suggested disabling Link State Power Management in the Power Options. I didn't see any specific references to that "fix" so I thought I'd post and just ask if a) anyone is still experiencing these random temporary "freezes" and b) if anyone had tried this "Link State Power Management" fix and either had success or no change.
Sorry if this has been discussed but a search on "link state" didn't return any posts so I thought it might be worth a new post.
I've only implemented this fix about half an hour ago, so it's difficult to tell if this has resolved the problem... anyone else had success with this technique?
p.s the fix is done by right-clicking on the Start button, clicking "Control Panel", then "System..." then "Power Options" then when you see the "power plans", click "Chang... Read more

I was out of town for a day and when I returned my computer was on (when it is usually in sleep mode or turned off completely), there were 3 desktop icons that appeared to be links to pornographic sites, and there was an annoying pop-up claiming that I have no Antivirus protection and giving me a link to download one. I have the Vyper anti-virus software, and if I ever tried to click a link on the pop-up, a pop-up from Vyper would appear saying that a "known bad program" was trying to run.

No one uses my computer but me, so there's no chance that anyone was trying to download porn. When I delete the icons, they still come back.

I have run a deep virus scan several times, but the pop-up and icons still appear. I'm positive that the windows alert is fake also because it says that a firewall is turned "On" but when I actually check my Windows Security Center, it says that the firewall is turned off.

Also for quite a few weeks, if I google something and then click links to the results, I'm redirected to random sites that I have never seen before.

As an added frustration, a blue screen with white, blurred font will fill the whole screen and then suddenly turn my computer off and then back on again.

I have NO idea what's going on with my computer! Please help!

Okay I guess I should start from the beginning and with as much detail in case anyone knows about the start of this problem.

This weekend the site called Planet Renders was taken down for an upgrade but during the process a malicious code was added to the site by someone (obviously not by the site owners). The code installs trojans on any PC infected with it. Well I happened to be so unfortunate as to log on to the site (without prior knowledge of this) during this time and got infected. Having dealt with similar circumstances in the past I Promptly locked down my firewall and manually disconnected my PC from the internet (yanked the dsl line out). While I might have stopped some of the attack my PC was infected with this fake Virus Scan Adware program (who's name escapes me atm) as well as 3 to 4 trojans all of which I managed to remove with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on Full PC Scan followed up with a McAffee Virus Scan on Full as well which detected no more viruses on my computer.

Okay so at this point Im thinking I escaped with little more than a scratch until I start to use Google a day later. At random intervals (that is to say I cannot get this to repeat in any regular fashion but it still happens with seemingly a mind of its own) the links I click on in Google when I do a search will randomly be redirected to third party sites. These sites are not "dangerous sites" but generally sites that have nothing to do with what I am searching for nor the link I c... Read more

I just purchased this D-Link gaming router, and it seems to be working fine, but I wanted to show you all a screenshot of the stats page. Does this look alright to you? I was running some downloads and using my VoIP and it seemed to work fine, but is some packet loss normal? I don't know much about that...

Thanks everyone,

Answer:New D-Link "Gamers Lounge" Router Question - Can someone have a look at this? (pic)

That is probably just fine.....If you check your logs, your WAN dropped RX packets probably correspond to 'unsolicited ingress packets' - e.g. stuff coming in on ports that are not open or part of existing TCP sessions. You might start to worry if you see dropped WAN TX packets.

For wireless, expect to see a fair amount depending on your surroundings. These devices use the 2.4Ghz spectrum so there can be a lot of interference. For instance, take a look at my wireless stats (same type of router)

Wireless Statistics

Sent : 946 Received : 764
TX Packets Dropped : 29 Errors : 43614

The massive errors is probably due to the fac that I have a 2.4 Ghz wireless phone nearby and a Logitech G7 wireless mouse that also uses the 2.4Ghz spectrum. There are also probably 10+ other wireless networks I can see with my laptop. ~_~ When I am doing large file transfers with my laptop, the logitech G7 on my desktop actually becomes wildly innacurrate and jumpy.

Since upgrading to Windows 7 I find that when I click on the help link in a Windows dialogue box the link brings me to a totally irrelevant section in the Windows help file. As an example, I'm into a file sharing dialogue box, there is a link for "I'm having trouble sharing". If I click on the link I get this information displayed in the "Windows Help and Support".

Data Execution Prevention: frequently asked questions

Here are answers to some common questions about Data Execution Prevention (DEP).

What is DEP?

DEP is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. DEP monitors programs to make sure they use system memory, safely. If a program tries running (also known as executing) code from memory in an incorrect way, DEP closes the program. DEP automatically monitors essential Windows programs and services, but you can increase your protection by having DEP monitor all programs. For more information, see Change Data Execution Prevention settings.
Is it safe to run a program again if DEP has closed it?

Yes, but only if you leave DEP turned on for that program... Read more

I would like to know if it is possible to move the "All Programs" link in the start menu to be above the list of pinned programs. The green arrow and box in the attached image explain what I want to do.

Thank you,

Answer:Move "All Programs" link in start menu

Hello Sklar, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm sorry, but you will not be able to do this with the Start Menu in Windows 7. However a 3rd party program like the free version of Vista Start Menu let's you have a customizable Start Menu that may work you instead.

Hope this helps,

One of our users on Windows 7 64-bit came to us recently with an issue trying to load their desktop from the "Desktop" link in the explorer bar under favourites. The link loaded and empty folder and the search bar started to progress across the top (green bar). It didn't load. Upon browsing to c:\users\username\desktop they could view their desktop icons fine. Weird.

This has now happened to me today but with the "Downloads" link. I created a new shortcut on my desktop to test and that worked fine. It started working again after a short while but has stopped all together. If I do the same, browse to c:\users\myusername\downloads it doens't work either! (but it did earlier) so now I can't get into my downloads folder at all through explorer. If I use CMD I can see the contents of this folder are still there.

As I'm writing this, I've just tried to go back to c:\users\myusername\downloads and it did load eventually.

This is a really random issue - anyone else experienced the same?

Answer:Explorer bar "Downloads" link under favourites does not work

I have a problem in that I can no longer see the link to "View Workgroup Computers" There is normally a link in the task pane in Windows XP (which is the OS I am on W/SP3), but I havenít been able to see it for quite a while. Anyone know how I can get it back or how I can otherwise show workgroup computers? I did have a problem with my network (not being able to see other computers), but I can't even begin to sort that out if I can't even ask it to show workgroup computers! Can anyone help?

Answer:Solved: Where has the "View Workgroup Computers" link gone!?

First, let's reset the stack.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Next, let's check this.

Check your Services are Started:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

Perhaps nobody in the forum asked here for the same problem twice.

I'm not sure about disabling that button, but why don't you just give him his own account if you're going to let him use the computer.

I just upgraded to FF 4 and when I go to send a link it is opening Outlook as it should but when Outlook opens, FF then opens a second email client that is part of my Forte Agent newsreader application. The funny thing is that I NEVER use that email app myself. In Windows 7 I checked my default programs settings and for sure I have the "mailto" protocol set to Outlook with no mention anywhere of the Agent email program.

Oddly, when I first looked into Options under the Application tab and check out "mailto" I found it set to the default of "Use Forte Agent." I didn't even find Outlook listed as an email client so I added it manually and set it to be the choice instead of the Agent program. I was unable to change the default setting or to delete that choice. That's what caused me to try to make a change using using about:configuration. I didn't have any luck there either.

With no success in any of the configuration changes I decided to look for the term "mailto" in my registry. I came up with a long list of entries with several making reference to Forte Agent. I didn't go any further with the registry because with this particular problem I don't have enough knowledge to analyze what I am seeing. To be totally honest I don't know where the problem originated. I have to say it started with FF 4 or its first update because I never had the problem before that.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. I'm using Windows 7 Pro.... Read more

I accidentally/inadvertently (ABSENTMINDEDLY!) just clicked on a link in an email which is in my Junk/Spam folder..

I immediately closed the webpage which opened (just as quickly as it appeared I closed it - if not more quickly than it appeared), re-booted, updated my free version of MalwareBytes (and it's scanning now, as I type this), and am hoping that between this scan and my various layers of security (which to the best of my knowledge/understanding ARE a good bit MORE THAN the "average" internet visitor) are plenty sufficient to handle any "damage" I (potentially) may have incurred...?

Looking back at the message, the link (Asian/Chinese in origin) looks like one of the following (below) in a Google search:

www ._dtxd._info/{moz%3AdistributionID}%3A{moz%3Alocale}%3A{moz%3Aofficial}&client=firefox&gbv=1

www ._dtxd._info/_{moz%3AdistributionID}%3A{moz%3Alocale}%3A{moz%3Aofficial}&client=firefox&gbv=1

Is there anything else I should do, or might want to do, here, please?
