CPU causing internet not to work?

Question: CPU causing internet not to work?

Hello. I recently sold a PC to a friend. It worked great. I've used it for about 6 months and had no problems. The people I sold it to said the internet worked for 3 days and then stopped working. everything else on the PC works fine but the internet does not. They called in a PC technician to look at it and he said the CPU was bad and that's why the internet didn't work. They are attempting to use a dial-up connection. So now they are trying to return it to me. anyways, I just find it hard to believe that the CPU could be bad if everything else on the computer works just fine. XP, Office, Games, etc. and I don't understand why the Technician would say that and put me in a bad situation. So if anyone can clear that up for me I'd really appreciate it. I've yet to look at it myself but I'm going to do that right now. Thank you

Preferred Solution: CPU causing internet not to work?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: CPU causing internet not to work?

So-called PC technicians say some strange things, but if he/she said that I wouldn't put any trust in the person. More likely the friend misunderstood whatever was diagnosed.

You gave little information, so I'm going to assume that it is a desktop and "the internet" was by ethernet connection.

I would guess that it is the NIC that failed or maybe the network controller section of the motherboard. If the former a PCI NIC should work. If the latter a USB ethernet adapter may work.

Hello Eveyone, this is my first post on this forum and by what I see so far it is much better than the forum that I am currently a member of when it comes to tech support.

I am pretty well versed in computers and I do a lot of work on them as a side job and every now and then I run into some issues when working with Vista (surprise!)

Well this is my problem..

I have a friends computer and it has windows vista home standard on a compaq laptop.

He had some issues that needed taken care of, registry, defrag, a little disc cleanup etc.

Well when working on it I noticed that there was no anti-virus software. So at this point remember the internet is working just fine with Internet Explorer.

Well I installed avast! and when I did, the internet no longer worked, so I uninstalled Avast! and now the internet works again.

So then I installed Eset NOD32 smart security and now the internet does not work again.

So I decided to test the internet connection and it says its connected fine and I can even do windows updates but I can not access any pages through internet explorer. So then I installed firefox and even with the antivirus uninstalled I can not get internet with firefox even when I can get it with IE.

So something is happening when I install an antivirus that is making IE not work. Also, for some reason, Firefox does not pull a page up even when I imported all settings, etc. during the installation from IE.

Any suggestions to this?

Answer:Anti-virus causing internet not to work!

It might be an Active X in internet exployer. In internet ex. go to tools, internet option, programs Manage Add-ons. Be shore to read the top of that box in Manage add-ons. That fixed it for me over a year ago.

Hello, and thank you for your time. I think it all started with a virus that i have cleared up with help in the virus forum. I was directed here.

For some reason IE8 will open and then shut down with no error code. Just says an error occured and it shuts down.

When I try to run Malwarebytes program, it says error occured (Error Code CocreateInstance failed;code 0x80040154. Class not registered) as well as (run time error '372' Failed to load .control 'WebBrowser' from ieframe.dll May be outdated Make sure you're using the version of the control that was provided with your application)
I can get this program to run only if I use the downloaded .exe file for it. I have updated, and it still does not work. When i try to delete program from Add/delete programs it says this program is not installed, do i want to delete it from the list.

I can not uninstall IE8 from the add/delete in control panel as there is no option. When I try to install so it can update, it freezes. It does say that if i choose to install IE8, it can not be deleted because a Windows service pack was installed previously to my latest version.

If I go into c:\windows\ie i am able to open internet explorer but it looks like an older version that runs extremely slow.

any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have 2x nVidia GeForce 7950GT's and a Broadcom wireless network card. When I enable SLI using the nVidia Control Panel, my wireless connection slows down such that everything keeps timing out, the connection has "Limited or No Activity" and I can't even ping my router any more.

It still "sees" all networks available but is un unable to connect correctly. If I turn of SLI it works fine again, doesn't even need a restart.

I do notice that the wireless card and one of my GPUs share an IRQ.

I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo with 2GB RAM, the above GPUs and a happy AMD X2 4600 CPU running good old Vista x64.

Any help will be much obliged :-) Thanks

My current set up is an ASUS UX305 notebook with an ASUS monitor. I'm running the two at the same time using the extend option.
After 30 minutes or so of internet usage my internet will stop working. When I click on the wifi button at first it will allow me to but show me no options for connection and the square wifi button in the menu goes grey.
Then the whole thing freezes and I can't even open the wifi menu. Then when I click settings everything freezes too. I restart the notebook and repeat.
Throughout this whole period the computer says I have internet access - my wifi box is working fine and I can access wifi on my phone... Yet when I use neflix or the internet I get nothing.
I have tried
a) updating my drivers - they're all fine
b) the command prompt (it said it was unnecessary when I did it)
Nothing has fixed it.
Is there something else that could be causing the problem? Is it the dual monitor set up? Could it be a virus?
I would really appreciate your help !

Answer:Windows 10 ASUS UX305 unable to use internet but says internet access and wifi menu freezes, what could be causing the problem?

Sounds like the Wi-Fi drivers on this laptop are generally not great (https://communities.intel.com/thread...rt=15&tstart=0)
While you've said you've updated the drivers - have you done it from Intel directly? Often they have newer drivers than Microsoft.
Although your description with the UI locking up is odd. While Windows UI doesn't browse, from a command prompt, can you ping your router?

I am currently on my laptop so doing the TSG Sysinfo would not help any but I do have my desktop open on the table & can answer any questions. Heres the problem

About 1 month ago I came home to my computer turned off. When I tried to turn it on it would not. I assumed it was the PSU, since we had bad storms lately. I replaced the psu and now I still have no power. But I did forget to plug in the JPW1 connector and I got fan, dvd drive lights & LAN lights. When I do plug the jpw1 connector it all goes away.

My next step is to replace the motherboard but would like some advice before I do this. Is this my only choice?

came home after a break off my computer and the keyboard wasn't working (computer left on, no one else touched it.) Keyboard was a microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse combo. Thought it had died (tho the mouse still worked). Went out and bought another MS one, didn't work, took it back and got a logitech laser wireless combo. Keyboard didn't work either. SPent lots of time on the phone with tech support at logitech. Still can't get anything on the keyboard to work. That's 3 keyboards. Turns out my keyboard worked on my son's computer (he has identical setup).

I run Windows XP home.

So I am suspecting something else is wrong--virus?? I update and run Norton regularly and have run it since the keyboard problem to see if there was something "new". Nothing there. Also run Adaware SE

Nothing seem to explain why my keyboard went haywire, and why I can't get another to work. They are all wireless that I have been trying. Don't have a corded one around any more to try.

Here are a 3 related/unrelated issues--the first one happened after the keyboard problem, the 2nd and 3rd predate by a while and I have just been ignoring them, so probably aren't related.

1. After doing some of the stuff logitech suggested, I know also get this message:
0xc0000033 failed to intitalize properly (i click ok and it goes away, sometimes pops up again, but then I haven't been using my own computer much lately)

Problem 2 (uuzvke.exe) does seem to trigger a switch. After some research, it appears that using HiJackThis (HJT) may cure your problem. Please follow the Preparation Guide Before Posting a HJT Log and then post your HJT in the HJT Board NOT anywhere else on this forum. Some side advice/notes:1. If your problem is malware related, the HJT Team member or designated helper should spot it and give you a cure.2. Please DO NOT alter your computer (install things, delete things, etc.) after posting your HJT log unless advised so by your helper.3. Please DO NOT make multiple posts to your HJT log post unless responding to your helper.4. The HJT Team and HJT Officials are rather busy here at BC, so it may take a few days for someone to get to your HJT log; however, once a HJT designated helper arrives you are in excellent hands, so please be patient and enjoy life in the mean time!

My javascript links in IE had not been working. I uninstalled norton internet security 04 and they worked. Then I reinstalled it and the links did not work again. If i disable the firewall and virus protection the links work again. I obviously need to have the firewall and virus protection enabled though. What can I do to fix this ? I have searched this site and the internet for solutions and have tried everything but nothing works. Help I am going crazy !!! Thanks

Answer:norton causing javascript links not to work

I don't use Norton, but I bet there is a feature in the firewall settings that blocks JavaScript and can be turned off leaving your firewall and antivirus still running. Someone who uses Norton could better help you. Look in the area that controls cookies, ads, and other 'privacy' features.

I'm posting my HiJackThis log there hoping someone can help me with what appears to be a network issue. In summary, the issue is after a reboot I can't access any network devices, open IE, open Firefox, etc for 15 minutes (seems to be exactly 15 minutes every time.) Processes start and show as running in Task Manager but they don't open up. Details on what I've tried (including MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, McAfee Virusscan, chkdks, etc) are posted on this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/907916-web-browsers-both-ie-8-a.html. Everything works fine in safe mode.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

Hi I am having huge problems with my computer and my husbands laptop. They are both infected with the same malware. My lovely hubby downloads a lot of pen drive applications from unverified websites and installed the onto his laptop. While I was out one night he then put them onto my computer, which I use to work from home.

I will just deal with this computer in this thread as I need it for work and as he is in the doghouse, his can wait!

Ok, so around 6 weeks ago I noticed that comodo was not running on startup as it should and neither was AVG. I then started to get internet connection problems and found that it kept timing out. Sometimes a page would load in and others not. I now find that when I type the letters do not always print out. Everything is slow and sluggish. I found that emails that I had supposedly sent were being returned to me in my inbox also.

Before I went away on holiday I scanned with Malwarebytes and found an infection which I removed. I scanned with SuperAntiSpyware and it found Dynamic Desktop but could not removed it. I manually changed the name of the exe file and deleted it and went on holiday. C:\Install.exe trojan was also found and removed.

Now back and still problems, no scanner other than Advanced Spyware Remover is detecting anything now. Advanced Spyware Remover finds:

File Infection Dynamic Desktop c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-iss-httpredirect_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001_none_3aa9e6f62b23af88\redirect.dll... Read more

Answer:Malware causing many problems and scans would not all work

Everytime I tried to stop a process, it reopened and multiplied... the rogues are:
avgwdsvx.exe - avgrsx.exe - avgnsx.exe and avgcxrvx.exeClick to expand...

These files belong to AVG Internet Security.

You have both AVG and Norton 360 installed. Uninstall one!

Use windows explorer to find and delete:
c:\windows\system32\ssbtsr.exe

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the below logs:

* C:\MGlogs.zip

I posted here a few days ago when my computer was taken by adware/spyware, the other day when i tried to print, the printer has been acting funny. Sometimes it will have error messages in the control program and it did print one document this morning, but then went back to not working.I was wondering if the spyware/adware could be causing this?

Well I have reinstalled vista once and on the first time I installed vista I couldn't get flash to work at all and was clueless and posted a thread on here stating my issue and the moderator who responded was unable to help me. Well I decided to reinstall vista and my flash player has been working all alone until I ran disk cleanup and now it will not work and I can view the "Install Complete" on the adobe site and install flash player manually yet that does no use. I also remember running diskcleanup as soon as I installed vista the first time. I think this may be a bug but how do I get flash player working again?

Hey what's up,

Thanks for the taking the time to read this. I am helping out my girlfriend who is out of state fix her mother's computer. She is at work so we have not tried getting a log from DDS however I do have a HJT log for your review. This is her systems and the steps I have tried to take so far.

> Ran Spybot and found Fraud.Anitvirus2010 - Spybot couldn't fully remove it which to be expected
> Comodo does not launch when first starting up the computer. We launched this and attempted to scan but it just stalls at 0
> Windows Defender didn't see anything
> Attempted to scan in safemode but Comodo does not scan in safe mode. I sure an execute doesn't start up in safe mode for the program.
> Ran HJT and it's posted below. I couldn't see anything outstanding, but I'm no expert lol
> Ran Malwarebytes on her computer, this log is also posted for your review. Did not remove it btw, because it is prevented it to remove
> Looked at startups and couldn't see anything fishy expect this Winlogon.exe, which may be or might not be the issue after reading so much about it.

So I am having a hard time identifying this rogue malware expect that it's one of the "anti virus" ones. This malware has me stumped and I have removed some tough ones before.

Hopefully this helps a little. Thanks for your input in advance!

I would click on icon, hour glass pointer would come up, and then turn back into regular pointer with nothing else happening. After running Norton Antivirus and MBAM, I though I was able to get rid of virus. However, each time I ran MBAM, another infected file would be discovered. Recently, I've been noticing that I've been getting redirects to Infomash and other sites when I click on a legitimate Google search result. Need help figuring out what is going on with my computer. I've attached the Attach.txt and ark.txt files discussed in the prep guide. Thanks in advance for any help.

I use ares to download whatever and lately it has been cutting the internet out. I used to be able to download stuff without problems but now the internet cuts out everytime i download. I have a dlink 2100 router wireless but it has ethernet sockets in the back that I plug my desktop into. At first I thought it might be malware or a virus but Is it possible the router is weak? What do I do to allow myself to download and not loose connection? [email protected]

Im using win98se in 16 color mode on my "gaming" computer again... XP is trying to test my patience, and I cant take much more.

Ive reinstalled windows three times, each time the same junk happenes.

I get my RT2500 802.11g wireless card installed, my 10/100/1000 realtek NIC going, other various drivers and start using internet over my wireless card

Im getting a signal at -60db, and I usually get up to 30Kilo-Bytes per second before my bandwith limiter slows it down to around 8kbs.

My ISP reserved me an IP address, which obviously works in windows 98. In XP, on the 1st time, I used my reserved IP address that they provided me. XP ran internet great, I downloaded Gentoo linux, burnout videos, and a bunch of other crap.

About 2 hours later, I Restated windows. upon loading, my wireless card connected, and I got a cute popup saying "connected 11mbs connection Very good". and a little yellow triangle saying "there is an ip conflict with another computer on the network".

I called my isp, and the tech guy says there is no ip conflict, my card is authenticating their 802.11b access point, and my IP is still reserved. We tried ipconfig /release and about 1/2 hours worth of other things with no luck. They said the problem is definatly on my end and there is nothing they can do.

I went and bought XP SP2 to replace my backup cracked copy, and reinstalled. I installed my ralink RT2500 drivers, video, networking sound... I used internet 2... Read more

This is the most bizarre malware I have ever seen. When I boot the WinXP computer to safe mode the internet works just fine. When I boot in regular mode I am able to ping everything (e.g. www.google.com, 192.168.0.1, etc.) but when I open up a browser (any browser) I get no connectivity.

I did a scan on this pc yesterday and their were a lot of viruses that I removed. I'm not sure if one of those caused this issue but I figured I'd post my hijack this log here to see if you guys have any insight.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, I had this problem last year at school towards the end of the year. It seems as if my new wireless adaptor is causing problems, or the fact that my old one is still showing up in the device manager but it says it cannot be uninstalled because it may be needed to boot the computer. The one I cannot uninstall is 3 isntances of Linksys Wireless-B USB Network Adapter v2.8 - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport. It is listed 3 times as #2 and #3. I did not have any problems over the summer when I used my computer back home and hooked up to our wired internet rather than the wireless. My computer now keeps freezing and then when I push the reset button and the computer starts up, it goes to the blue screen of death. When that happens I flip the switch in the back of the computer and turn it off and on again and it starts right up, soon to freeze again. Does anyone know what could be going on here? I can post a HJT log if you feel needed... Thanks.

Hi there guys!
So I'm new but I'll try and be as clear with my story as possible because I've already figured out the cause I just need to figure out the solution. I've had this desktop since fall of 2004 and it's never given me any serious problems. Fall of 2005 I took it with me when I started college and it started doing something VERY strange. It would just freeze up. And by freeze up I don't mean that it would freeze for a few seconds and go back to normal. I mean that it would freeze and the only way to unfreeze it would be to do a hard reboot.

Sometimes it would do it multiple times a day, other times it would go for a few days without doing it and then just do it. It tends to do it at the most inconvenient times too. I'm a gamer, and anybody who plays WoW probably knows that it tends to really grate on your nerves when you're in the middle of an instance and your computer freezes and you have to reboot.

At the time I couldn't figure out what was causing it, especially because when I took it home for the summer and had it up in my room (which didn't have an internet connection) it worked fine. I took it with me when I went down to Florida on an internship and after 3 solid months of not freezing, it started up again like it had never stopped. I finally realized through trial and error that what was causing it was my internet connection. What boggles my mind is that when I'm connected to the internet at home, it never freezes. But as soon as I plug it into a co... Read more

I fixed a poorly setup wireless Virgin Broadband connection some time ago (being blocked by software on the laptop) and now the customer is ringing me saying that its keeps going OFF and to get it on she has to reboot everything - now this has only started happening since the installation of a Virgin V-Box she had - she says after running the repair on Vista it says something along the lines of "another computer has the same IP address..." sumit like that anyway - so I said well if its been since the install of the V-Box ring Virgin and they should help you with it cos it sounds like its that....

SO... she rang them up and immediatley the technician said it sounds like they are fighting for the same IP address... but after running some tests he could not fix the issue and then said "because you did not buy your Wifi router from us we cannot help you with this problem...the only thing I CAN tell you is put your laptop closer to the router..." SHEESH...!!! (oh and BTW the laptop is 7ft away in clear view)

SO... on the fone to me I managed to confirm that theres nothing wrong with laptop OR wifi router - what seems to be happening is at some stage (dunno when cos ive got her loggin the disconnections at moment) theres seems to be a signal coming down the line (maybe for the V-Box) and this disconnects the modem (which is how the reboot fixes it..) the reason I know this is cos she said when she has been offline its says its connected but limited connectivit... Hi all, I installed a video player by online download "Divx" that was required to watch an on line movie site. It started locking my screen when it attempted to "update" so I deleted the files. It still locks about once a week and when I re start I have a notice that a Divx update is available. Whether I postpone or close I get no option to stop the updates. Thanks

Answer:internet update causing lock up?

I would try using Revo Uninstaller to remove all DivX files from the system. Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller: 1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake. 2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button: 3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option: 4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps. 5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window: 6) Click Next again. Once the window is done scanning for files and other things that did not get removed, you will be presented with this window: . You will want to select only the bolded items, then click on Delete. If any entries-usually the last thing listed and not in bold-have a ... Read more

Greetings Guru's

Anyone know what's the problem with P17.dll and system lockup's??

This is with a Creative Labs Audigy SE sound card. Crash, crash, crash.

Whenever I try to connect to the Internet, via dialup modem, about 30 seconds into the process, just as it's about to connect, the dreaded Blue Screen appears and the computer is locked up tighter than Ft. Knox gold (if there actually be any gold).

If I launch Auto Runs and uncheck this P17.dll, and reboot, then the crash and lockup stops. Quite naturally, with P17.dll unchecked, I then have no sound.

Did I try different PCI slots? Yep.
No indications of trouble in Device Manager.
IRQ conflicts? Nope.

Hello
For about 2 weeks now ive been experiancing a completely new problem, where downloads and video streams have been causing my internet to crash.Im using a Netgear RangeMax Network adaptor and a Belkin (I think) Router.
This happens when I download torrents via Utorrent, stream videos, download new game content such as WoW Patches and sometimes when I download files via firefox[Latest one was 5.5Mb].
Ive tried disabling Zonealarm and NOD32 but the problem still occurs.
I can fix this by restarting my computer and then unplugging > plugging in my Network adapter.
I have reasons to believe that my recently installed Ultimate is corrupted.
I have an alternate pc where downloads work fine; is there any chance somone can lead me to a download of Windows 7 so that I can put it on my external to install on this Pc ? I think my external has 40 gigs left; too little space ?
Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks

I have a Gateway ML6732 with Vista. At seemingly random times, it will drop my wireless internet connection and not reconnect. After a short while, about 15 minutes, it improperly shuts itself down. Sometimes, upon reboot, it gives me an error message claiming that its due to the wireless hardware in my computer. It suggested installing updated drivers. I did so, but such it didn't solve the problem. Any ideas on what to do?

Answer:Wireless internet causing crashes

Knowing very little about your network environment,it's a bit hard to diagnose the problem, but,we generally recommend three things to start with.

Wireless interference: Change the wireless channel.1/6/11 in US
Download and install the latest firmware for your router.
Router reset.Hold the reset button in for at least 15 seconds.

Has this always been a problem?
Have you cabled directly to the modem to see if the problem persists?Any modem change requires a power on reset of the modem(power off for at least 30 seconds)
Exact text of error msg would also be helpful.

I'm using Windows XP Professional. My problem is, whenever my flash drive and my wireless internet adapter are plugged in at the same time, the flash drive doesn't work as if it's not being detected. It does that with other USB devices, also. I'm able to use my keyboard and mouse but the only way to use my flash drive or my magic-jack is to unplug my wireless internet adapter. Is there a way to fix that? My wireless adapter is called "Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless-G USB Dish Adapter."

Hello,
Recently I was infected with the Alureon trojan, which caused me much greif. However, after running MaleWareBytes several times, as well as installing and running AVG, I seemed to have removed all traceable parts of the trojan. All of my computer seems to be running normally, save for one very important thing: The Internet.

Now, I automatically assumed that it was either a firewall or a DNS problem. So first I disabled all of the firewalls which produced no effect. I then pinged google.com and received a response, so I'm relatively certain that it is not a DNS issue. It appears, though, to be intermittent, as sometimes on browsers the pages will load and sometimes they will not. I have tried reinstalling both google chrome and firefox, and it also had no effect.

I have dismissed the issue as an ISP problem, as I have two routers connected with separate wireless broadcasts, and one of them works and one of them does not. Both are managed by the same ISP, and unfortunately it's the faster one that does not work.

I think it would also be worth mentioning that my iPhone, when connected to the problematic router, receives internet just as intermittently as the computer, so I'm assuming it's not my computer that is infected.

The last thing I could possibly think was that it was my router that was infected, and if that truly is the case, I have absolutely no idea what to do apart from buying a new router.

Greetings.

A well known problem is the fact that many manufacturers have not yet caught up with Windows 10. Case in point: many machines carrying the RealTek PCIe Gigabit ethernet adapters will periodically drop connection for no discernible reason. The only remedy is a reboot of the computer.

I recently worked on a laptop (ASUS X550 series) that was a Win10 upgrade from Win8.1 - the network-dropping symptom was a constant problem. After several fruitless tries through the Microsoft forums/troubleshooters, I decided to go to the the source.

After reloading a new, updated RealTek driver, the problem has been solved. Hope this helps anyone with similar symptoms.

For some reason since getting my new laptop and windows 8 my Internet data usage has skyrocketed. Is it something with the start page and/or apps or something else? All I know is, I never used to get close to reaching my 5gb limit but since windows 8 I've gone WAY over. When I look at my Internet bill, before I got windows 8 I never had anything over 100mb show up, but starting the day I started using 8 I've had from 100-800mb(!!) show up. Help is appreciated! I have two more days before I can take the laptop back and if I can't figure this out I'm buying something with an older version of windows.

I'm working on a Vista computer for a friend whose grandson had literally almost overloaded it with crap. It was cluttered and running very slowly, with 3 different browsers, and at least 4 different anti-malware scanners in various states of expiration. Internet Explorer would access the internet very slowly, all the while generating frequent error messages pertaining to inability to access proxy servers. I uninstalled out all the extra games, crap-apps, search assistants, extra browsers, and uninstalled all the anti-malware programs, leaving IE8 as the default browser, un-checked the proxy settings and setup the LAN settings at auto-detect. The system began running very cleanly, and began downloading and installing MS updates. At the completion of the update list, including IE9 & SP2, the computer would no longer access the internet in any way, shape, form or fashion, using IE9, Firefox (reinstalled due to failure of IE9). (I backed up the computer thru several restore points, till I had it previous to all the changes I had made, still would not access the internet). The computer will however, continue to detect, download and install MS updates. I can (as administrator at CMD) successfully ping various websites by their ip address. ANY attempt by IE9 or Firefox to access the internet responds with an error message of "Cannot Connect".

Hi,
I have searched some re. AVG but am not security savvy, so any help appreciated!
Purchased AVG 9.0 and I think it's giving all sorts of lockup and hanggggiiing problems (email, internet, everything!). And it seems to take forever to 'resolve' anything...it directs me when 'threat' appears to 'look at file' but takes me instead to a knowledge base screen not to actual file...and there's never a way to know if it's really resolved, since there's no "done" or " removed" box - I find it very time-consuming and the navigation very cumbersome...I don't want to spend 20 min. every time I turn on computer!

Any alternatives! I spent $40 or so on this, but I can't take much more!

Ok, several months ago I downloaded Bearshare and it seemed to work fine for a few days causing no problems, I could close it out and surf the web fine, then all of a sudden if I used it and then closed it, I could not surf unless I restarted 2 or 3 times. Sometimes I could get it to work after the "page could not be displayed" showed up by clicking on the "detect network settings" link on the page. So I uninstalled it and have been having no problems since, but I decided to try Kazaa Lite yesterday and it works great and I could even surf while it was downloading, but today I can't hardly surf at all, anywhere, it took me twenty min. just to get on here, I keep getting the "page could not be displayed" could this be a coincidence or do P2P programs just not like my computer? I am running XP Home and have DSL. Any ideas? Or maybe my ISP decided to have problems today.

In another thread i explained that i was unable to use the internet as my computer would effectively shut it down when it was turned. When the computer was turned off the internet was fine. I tried lots of things to resolve this issue and none of them seemed to have worked at all. It just makes the internet stay online a little longer than usual. So, i found out their are no drivers out their for my internet that are compatible for windows 10. They are only compatible for windows 7 and 8. How would i go about downgrading my windows 10 to 7 or 8 so that i can use my internet as this has been going on for over a month now and having very limited internet has become extremely frustrating.

Answer:Windows 10 causing me to be unable to use the internet

Well, if it is over a month you waited too long. You had 30 days to roll back to your previous operating system. You might want to try a PC Reset. Perhaps whatever the problem is might be remedied. Go to Settings > Update and Security > Recovery > Reset This PC.

So basically, when I turn my computer on in the morning, my download speed on speedtest is 96mbps, which is really good. But then I go to play Counter-Strike, I play for 30mins-1hour and I start to lag and my ping rises from around 10-20 to 100-200. I close the game and go on speedtest, and I nowget 100 ping and a download speed of 7mbps. My internet doesn't return to normal for numerous hours, and it affects all the devices in my household (both wired and those on wi-fi).

So I then rang up Optus, who ran tests and decided to come and replace the modem, router and the switch . But the problem still persists, and it is getting really annoying. If anyone has a solution or any ideas, please let me know, as Optus said if replacing those didn't fix it, then there's nothing else they can do.

Several days ago (nearly 10), my computer began acting up for a strange reason. I've been searching for the reason for a good while. I've posted on several forums, but have not gotten a solution.

The problem is that every hour on the hour, all access to websites is blocked. My internet is completely fine. I can access steam, teamspeak, and several other programs, but anything that deals with a website is blocked. No web pages will load on any browser, the steam store page will not open, spotify quits working.

I've run several virus scans with both Avast Antivirus and Malwarebytes, and I had found some DNSChanger Trojans, but quickly disposed of them. Any scans after come out negative.

It finally occurred to me today to check Windows Event Viewer. That is where I found the underlying cause of my problem. Every hour on the hour, I get 4 errors. The first being an application error for svchost.exe_DPS. The other three are for it's services, Base Filtering Engine, Diagnostic Policy Service, and Windows Firewall. The application error states that the faulting module is Esent.dll. This file may have been corrupted, but I am not certain.

More info can be found in my other thread.

The only solution I've found is going into the Services Manager and restarting the three services above. This has worked without fault, but it is not a permanent solution, as I'd have to do this every hour.

My recently installed cable connection worked perfectly for several weeks, then started giving me problems nine days ago. The cable tech has changed the modem, says signal is excellent, and I am the only one on this cable loop having this problem. It sometimes loses connection at odd intervals, but it has a major problem EVERY evening at about the same hour. It will start losing and regaining the connection every couple of minutes, working perfectly in between the losses. This continues for an hour or so, then the intervals between loss become longer until it becomes normal again, until the next night. This computer is rarely shut off, but on a couple of restarts lately a small window has appeared for about two seconds just as it powers off stating "Ending Program--shell com hidden window". This has never appeared before. I have Windows firewall, Spywareblaster, AdAware, and Spybot, all normal. Is there anything suspicious in the log, and if not, can you suggest anything else to find the problem? All the 015 entries are OK. Thanks

Answer:Is a hijacker causing my internet boots? Log attached

eeeeeeeeeew, an aol user...

Well, you're not infected with anything. Your pc needs a good house cleaning but only because you have trinkets everywhere... The problem you described I would contribute to one of two things:

1. You cable provider has too many nodes on your "trunk" (I can't remember what they call it) and at the peak time when everybody is using it say between 18:00 and 20:00 your local time, you're connection is useless through no fault of your own. You can verify this by running START>RUN>CMD [enter], then PING -t apache.org and let it go for a while. If you see it timing out or returns higher than 400ms, b1tch to the cable company.

2. The power supply for your cable modem is too weak. I had this problem once and it took all of us about 6 weeks to figure out the problem. The amperage on the tranformer (little black box you plug into wall) was 800 and when I replaced it with a 1000, presto!

Good luck

Hello,

To begin, sorry if I am unclear or uncertain on things - I am not *great* with computers but hope to learn from this.

2 days ago, I booted up Firefox, but my home page (sports website) wasn't loading. I figured it was just busy, so I tried other websites in my bookmarks - they were all Blogger websites. None of those were working, either, so I figured my Internet was down (infrequently happens). I tried a random page in my bookmarks, however, and it loaded fine. I noticed this has happened to other people as well - no access to home page, no access to search websites such as Google or Ask, but select websites work fine.

I ran a scan yesterday on Norton 360, and it supposedly cleaned up Trojan.Vuron - I am quite confident this is the root cause of this, as I noticed other people have had my symtoms as well. I was told by a friend I should post this anyways, as everyones is different - hopefully this isn't considered spam. Despite being "cleaned", my internet still has the problems with search engines and certain websites.

I run scans on Norton 360, AdAware SE Personal and the Panda scanner recommended in the sticky, but the problem still persists. I did all 5 steps provided in that sticky:

1. I don't have rogue programs.
2. I scanned with Panda (log attached)
3. I have adequate protection, although undoubtedly it could be better.
4. I am caught up on all Windows updates.
5. My logs are provided.

ADSL internet connection slowed to almost zero (10 Kbps! - the connection got slower & slower through time).

contacted ISP who suggested connecting to the test socket.

decided first of all to connect an old router to the master (but not test) socket together with different cabling & splitter/microfilter - everything starting working almost perfectly (apart from downstream data rate was considerably lower than expected each time I connected - between about 1400 & 1600 Kbps - I have max. 8 Mbps).

when I connected back my current router everything continued to be OK (apart from low downstream data rate) - until I would restart the current router and everything went back to very very slow!

I then decided to replace current router with old router, but this time using the same telephone socket, cables etc. as for the current router.

Again everything started working well, but this time the downstream data rate is 6496 Kbps! I swapped back the current router, and everything is at this moment going fine.

BUT I just know that if I restart my current router it will be back to very very slow again!

does anybody know what's going on?!

(p.s. I had a problem a few months ago where the internet would go down for a time, sometimes for hours, but the ISP had no idea what was going on. I think it could have been a NAS drive connected to the router that was causing the issue - is this possible? It would seem that disabling the NAS drive would fix the problem - it is stil... Hi,

I don't know if this is connected to a problem I had very recently or it's an entirely new one, but I started having problems when booting my PC. I ran it in safe mode and ran ewido, which found some corrupt files. After removing them I was able to get to my desktop as normal, and from there I ran S&D, AVG, and Activescan. All of these programs detected problems but unfortunately somewhere along the line I lost my Internet connection. I loaded up a winsock restoration program which didn't help, and spent a long time on the phone to my Internet provider last night trying to connect, but something appeared to be blocking it everytime. As the computer also freezes at random moments I'm assuming it must be virus-related.

Here are my Ewido, Activescan (I then deleted all the files it suggested), and HJT reports. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Guys and Gals

I'm Having a problem fixing my girlfriends computer
it seems her norton anti virus has been acting up
she can no longer connect to msn , or do banking online or pretty much do anything that requires encryption or a program requiring and update
We also appeared to get an error when you load up the computer about a missing or corrupt file in norton so according to the knowledge base we must reinstall everything which I attempt to do, but it will not let me uninstall all the programs involved with norton.

Norton Internet Secruity asks for a NIS supervisor logon in order for me to uninstall it which is BS considering this Win XP has multiple users and all logons are admin access
it will not let me uninstall NIS firewall. The other wierd thing about NIS is that when you look in the settings it's permently set to disabled and you cant change it to enable or anything.
I've tried looking for several fixes over google and what not apparenly alot of people are having the same problems. I did a virus scan with AVG which I installed but it found nothing so I rule out it's not a virus. I'm at a lost so I need help from you kind folks
here's my registry log anyways

Heya,
I'll try to be as detailed as I can but if I miss anything important just let me know.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on a HP DV7-6108TX specs are;CPU: Intel Core i7 2630QM @ 2GHz
RAM: 8GB 1600MHz
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M

The problem I'm encountering is blue screens caused by what seems to be some kind of incompatibility between IE and the intel graphics driver. I'm getting PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA blue screens, faulting module is igdpmd64.sys. At first I assumed it was RAM, so I tested some new RAM with the same specs and some old 4GB 1600MHz RAM that I know was working fine and ran into the same problem. I also tried reinstalling both the base graphics driver and Radeon graphics driver from scratch to eliminate that as a possiblity.

With some reading it seems the DV line has a problem with a windows update that was causing this issue that is related to IE10. This particular update isn't installed so it led me to test IE11 as the cause. I stress tested the computer with multiple IE windows open and the BSOD would occur generally within 3 hours (tested 5 times), sometimes quickly sometimes toward the end of the period. Next I tried running the same stress test with multiple Chrome windows, the laptop ran fine for 18 hours straight, upon opening IE it crashed almost instantly.

I want to try reverting IE to IE9 just to avoid programs that use IE as a background process (such as Skype) from causing the BSOD. I've tried all the typical things for... Read more

I haven't really had many problems being disconnected anymore, but my connection does seems to slow down severely quite often. In fact, this happens practically every single day. Usually when this happens, I change the wireless channel, reset my modem and router, then reboot, and this solves the problem most of the time. But eventually, I just have the same problem again. And it gets painstakingly slow, too.

Answer:Wireless router causing internet slowdowns

Your title says that the problem is caused by the wireless router. You know this because the problem doesn't happen when you are connected directly to the modem?

Since you say the problem is the router, have you tried just resetting it and not messing with the modem or computer to get working again?

A couple of days ago, my Dell laptop computer wouldn't connect to the Internet. (I my computer connects to the Internet via a cable and not WiFi.) I call my ISP and the computer guy said it had nothing to do with the modum or the signal, and it was probably my computer. I have a mini computer (the one I am using now) and hooked it up to the cable and all appeared to be working well. I took my computer to a computer repair shop, and the guy said it was a virus. He also said that I had to back-up my computer, basically wipe-out the hard-drive, reinstall Windows 7 and then re-install everything back.

My questions are: 1. Can a virus cause a computer not to connect to the Internet and 2. If so, is there anything that I can do to get rid of the virus other than back everything up, wipe-out the hard drive, reinstall Windows and then put everything back? I use EST NOD32 virus protection and feel that this is a good program. If there is a virus on my other computer, I wonder why EST NOD32 didn't pick it up?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Hi all,

I have a very strange problem with Windows 7 64bit.

Sometimes when I open my browser to go on the internet, my desktop becomes totally unresponsive and nothing works; the start menu freezes and I can't select anything. Sometimes after 30 seconds or so (or longer) the desktop becomes responsive again. On other ocassions, I have to log off and log back in to solve the problem.

I've tried several browsers - Internet Explorer 8, Firefox and Chrome.

There are no errors in the event log regarding this.

Can anyone help me to identify this problem? Any help would be great.
regards
Jp

I have an issue where I install an update and shortly after it caused my wireless to run really slowly (down from 5 mb/s to 200 kb/s). I talked to the internet company and determined that it was not them. I've run multiple virus scans and that's not it either.
I've been on a few forums and no one can really figure it out, so I reformatted my computer. After that it worked great until prompted for an update. After that was installed, it did the same thing. I ended up reformatting it again and, again, it worked great for a few days until I was prompted to make an install when shutting down. Now, it does the same thing again.
When you get online, it works great for a few minutes and then wireless goes down to nothing again.
I've got an Inspiron 5000 series running on Windows 10. It's a little over a year old.
Any suggestions?

Hello

I recently tried searching something on my google chrome address bar and it redirects me to a search engine at search-results.com
But when I go to google.com directly and search it searches using google's search engine.
I thought this may be a virus so I scaned using antivir and there were 7 detections. I manually went to the folders containg each and deleted them. I could find 5 out of the 7. I could not find the ones called "setup.exe"
I think these may be the problem. I attached the report and will paste the hijackthis log below. Thanks in advance!

Every time i start my computer, I am able to connect to the internet through my broadband connection, and log into msn. I can surf sites through internet explorer.

Since friday, however, firefox has been causing problems. I can open it, and surf sites for about 5 minutes before it loses the connection.

Once that has lost the connection, I.E is unable to connect. AVG and adaware can't update.

Msn stays connected, and if I use a proxy I can surf as normal, albeit not as fast or reliably as before.

I have uninstalled firefox and everything returned to normal. I clean installed firefox and everything was normal for about an hour before the problems began again.

I have scanned for spyware and adware and viruses, but everything came up clean.

Does anybody have any idea what is wrong, and how I would fix it? I don't want to be stuck on I.E forever.

Thanks

This problem has been persisting for the past month. And I think I have narrowed it down to a software issue rather then a hardware issue. I can be connected to both LAN and WAN and both will give out.

Odd enough upon a fresh restart the problem is gone, for about 4+ hours and then no working. Another characteristic of the problem is that my connection whether wired or not seems to not recognize its been disconnected and does not show as local network only or completely disconnected, and web based applications such as MSN will stay "connected", except for the fact on other peoples computers I am disconnected and when I try send out going messages it comes up with a "this message hasnt been sent blah blah blah".

So yeah. Right now its more of an inconvenience then anything.

I have AVG, Windows Vista Ultimate, CC-cleaner, Avast. All currently up to date...

I will keep you updated as this happens, If you need any logs or anything let me know and I will gladly relay that information.

I have run through all the stages in the READ AND RUN THROUGH ME FIRST thread.

Whilst using the internet I keep on getting a series of pop ups followed by an error message saying that
Generic Host Process for WIN32 Services has failed and probably needs to close. As soon as this happens the internet drops and I cannot reconnect until I restart the computer.
It also seems to mess up Windows Media Player both in appearance and it removes the sound. It also does not allow me to play mp3's, WM files etc.
After having the same problem, my girlfriend reported that the offline game that she began to play after a restart had also had all the sound settings turned to zero. She also reports that the game crashes alot which may or may not be related; it is a high end game graphically.

I tried to include a HJthis log, a runkeys.txt and a newfiles.txt in this post and an Activescan.txt, a Counterspy report, a bdscan report and a AIDA32 report as additional posts, however since I originally posted in the Malware section it won't let me repost so please follow this thread to access them:

Yesterday my router broadband light started to flash quickly and my connection was cut. I had to reconfigure the router using the ISPs helpline, but even though all lights were on, I couldnt connect. According to the helpline, it could well been the firewall in my antivirus programme (Panda). On disabling my antivirus, the router connected perfectly, and after rebooting, all now seems OK. If this happens again, do you think the firewall really could be to blame? If so, would it be safe (or possible) to disable just that part of the antivirus? My ISP said it would be OK since the router has a built in firewall anyway. The router is a D-Link G624T for ADSL 2+Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Answer:antivirus firewall causing internet breakdown?

I don't think that this is anything to be concerned about. Panda, like many AV/Firewall packages, is set up to automatically update. Occasionally the update can go awry and something doesn't get set correctly on the dynamic reload. In your case the LAN access was blocked. A hard reboot (cycling the power) and/or clicking the manual update button generally clears this.To answer your other question. The firewall in your router is probably more than adequate. I use both hardware & software firewalla, many people rely on the just the hardware one and there are even people on this forum who don't use either (they consider that being careful is enough). It is all down to personal choice.

Greetings,

I have been using my DIR-655 for about 2 weeks now with Road Runner wideband services. Starting yesterday my internet became very slow and I discovered the cause was the router. I tried resetting it to factory settings and things will be fine and run smoothly for about 5-15 minutes but after that it goes back to being extremely slow. My speed tests would go from 10ms (normal) to 250-450ms. Before this issue occurred the Dlink was perfect, had full speeds. I am running a wire Ethernet connection.

I am currently using revB and tried upgrading firmware to 2.01NA which had no effect, but make my internet seemingly go back to normal for the first few minutes then nosedive again.

I have also changed my speed/duplex settings in Network Config to 1gbs Full Duplex. I've also disabled QoS, and still no change. Not sure what else to do.

When directly connected to the modem everything seems fine. The modem is also the provided Motorola SBG6580 which I have called Time Warner to set the modem into bridge mode and have the DIR-655 connected to it.

With DIR-655 connected to PC
With Modem connected to PC
Any suggestions?

Exactly every 2 minutes my mouse pointer turns into an hourglass icon for 1-2 seconds and then goes back to regular mouse pointer (this is when I am sitting at desktop with no other programs running but NIS). I have a new computer from dell with the NIS on it. I disabled everything in my startup menu (run, msconfig, startup) and when I go to desktop it doesn't do it. As soon as I check the norton line in startup it does it again and that is why I believe it is NIS that is doing it. Do you have any idea why or how to fix.

Answer:Nortin Internet Security causing hourglass

Hi TheOldThug

You could take a look at your processes in Task Manager and when the cursor changes see if any of the cpu usages jump.

Possibly NIS is doing some kind of check.

Does it have a 'keep alive' option making it ping a website every couple of minutes to stop your internet connection idling ?

I have a few internet radios in the house, mostly older Reciva-based radios, with the latest firmware. Some are connected to the LAN, some connect wirelessly. They have a setting which allows them to remain on the network in standby mode, the idea of this being that they start up from standby much quicker - if they are set to disconnect in standby, they take longer to restart, which is annoying.

So far, this was all well and good. However, when my son upgraded his PC to Windows 10, every so often one or other of the radios start up spontaneously. This also happened when I put Windows 10 on an old laptop. There is no rhyme or reason to it; Windows 10 just seems to do something on the network which is causing these radios to start up. Including the bedroom radio at 2:30am on one occasion. And no, the radio settings menus do not mention wake-on-LAN.

I do have some other internet radios: a more recent Reciva-based one, and Frontier Silcon based radios - these are not affected.

What could Windows 10 be doing on the network that could be causing this, and is there any way of stopping it (apart from setting the radios to disconnect in standby, obviously) ?

Hi there guys,

Let me start by saying that I have gone far and deep investigating my ISP on a potential slow net issue. We have found it is 100% definitely NOT them. We have 3 other computers and my phone that all have no problems, only this one is producing the random VERY slow (latency speeds of up to 9000ms) internet.

I ran a Malware Bytes scan that shows a Hacktool-Wpakill virus onboard. (2 of them actually) and a few RiskTools. I deleted them but I still get these bad drops in speed whilst all other computers do not have the slow speed.

Anyway, I am really stumped and I have the script below for your convinience.

I thank you in advance!!

Answer:Virus randomly causing slow internet.

Is my case really boring or something? I mean, people make a topic then get a reply straight away. I've asked for help on more than one forum with the same reaction. I know I only posted this yesterday, but I can already tell without a "bump" it will go to the back of the pack. I also appreciate you guys do this as a hobby in your own free time, but I'm sure you would be bummed and feel sympathy for an avid internet and PC gamer whom is receiving 9000+ ms latency every 2 hours!

Hi

I am running Vista Ultimate (French language version) as my desktop with a pretty much clean install and I am experiencing an intermittent internet connection.

50% of the time I can connect fine, while the rest of the time I experience very slow sub-dialup internet speeds. I previously had an XP SP3 machine and used exactly the same Netgear dongle to connect to my router without any problems, but now my machine - sitting in exactly the same place in the house - causes me this problem.

I've tried updating my router firmware, disabling software firewall all to no avail.

I have a Vista laptop, XBox360 and iPhones in the house all connecting to the router without trouble. Don't know if this is important, but the other Vista machine doesn't display an IPv6 entry when I ipconfig/all (I did this having read of other people on here having connection problems)

When I am experiencing this trouble I get the attached results from pinging google.

Any help or suggestions would be most gratefully received. Thanks

I am using Windows vista on my main computer that is directly connected to a DSL modem. Somehow this computer specifically causes my internet to spike really bad and really often, when I am playing games I would usually get a ping of 90 ms, I now get anywhere from 300-1500 consistently. I tested my other computers connection when this computer was not on the internet and it is completely fine but the second this one connects back to the internet, it goes back to being terrible. What makes it really weird is that the problem randomly started when I hadn't even changed or installed anything and it even persisted through a reformat of the computer.

Something that might be associated with the problem, around the same time this started happening I started getting a message says the Microsoft host process has been ended.

And the last problem that goes a long with it is that I get an error when trying to update Windows from a newly restored computer that says "Windows could not search for updates Errors found: Code 800700b47" and says get help yet the help menu leads nowhere.

Thank you for your time in considering my problem.

Answer:Vista computer causing internet to spike

try this: You receive error code "0x80073712" or the "Windows Features" dialog box is empty when you try to install updates or components in Windows 7 or in Windows Vista

I've just purchased Norton Internet 2005 and to be honest it's just caused havoc. I unistalled the old version before installing the 2005 but whenever I install it and run liveupdate I get an error message telling me that it's not installed, not configured, missing a dll file etc..When it is on their, it locks the internet!!!I've tried all sorts to get it sorted, but to no avail. Has anybody had the same problems? Is it best to uninstall it and try another package? any help would be grateful.Luckily my laptop on the home network is running and is protected seperatley. However what's the point of having a computer if you can't access the internet through fear of being attacked!

Answer:Norton internet 2005 causing havoc

As much as I hate to say this but there are many previous threads about this, some good, some bad.click hereI have a friend who was recommended to buy it but all he got, like you, havoc. I have now taken it off and installed AVG, Adaware, Sypbot, Spywareblaster and Zone Alarm, all free.No more problems.

Having had a total hard drive failure I am now loading my new drive with my old programs. Internet Cleanup (I've tried versions 1.02 and 3.00) causes Norton Crashguard to come up with the message ; Internet Cleanup 1.02 attempted to save index.dat . Safe Original detected an attempt to write to "index.dat" and will save a copy of it without the most recent changes. Can anyone tell me what it means and (in simple terms if possible)how do I sort the problem out. Thanks.

So I have a computer that has internet explorer windows poping up all the time. I cannot for the life of me find out what's causing it, and I've tried about 5 different spyware programs.

Is there a piece of software that monitors the computer so I can see what program is trying to start another program? Something that monitors internet explorer so I can boot in safe mode and delete the malious file?

On my laptop whenever I activate the wireless intenet it gives me the blue screen of death. It's Windows XP home edition, and the connector thing is Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection. For 1-2 weeks I've unknowingly had the wifi/wireless turned off because in the college dorms I use broadband and today I just figured out how to turn it back on (I have to hit the blue Fn key and then F2 because the second function/blue function is wireless/wifi I beleive because it turns on the WiFi button next to the capslock/etc buttons). Everything is fine until I turn on the Wifi and try to connect to my home wireless connection thing...

Hello I have been getting very high memory usage from svchost.exe (localsystemnetworkrestricted)I normally notice it between 90K and 110+K memory usage. Usually when it is that high I notice I am unable to access the internet. At first I thought it was a Firefox thing since it was getting connection rest messages then I noticed Thunderbird would not send or receive messages so I tested in IE same unable to access any webpage my network icon shows me connected. I am thinking I have a malware or something causing svchost.exe to get that high and stop me from accessing the internet. As soon as I stop the svchost process I am able to surf again.I have looked and looked and can not find any resolve to this issue. I have scanned with windows defender, Avast, Malwarebytes all come up clean. Any help would be great.Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum, at the suggestion of staff. ~ Animal

What could be causing HUGE lag spike in my internet/gaming?

I have DSL connections of - 2.9/368 with the sytem listed here. What is going on? I have HUGE lag spikes and cannot get it resolved. These spikes occur straight through the DSL modem line to the Computer (no network etc). In the game Mohaa it is most noticeable and has gotten worse, every since we upgraded to faster DSL. Also I upgraded to XP. My ME PC does better and is a wieny little thing.

Hello all,

Computer info:
1.5 year old HP Pavilion dv2815nr Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

I just recently moved into an apartment with a few other people and they noticed that their internet connection would slow down severely or they would loose their connection completely while play online games or web surfing.
The three of us checked our computers and we think that a virus or some kind of malware is running on my laptop and is causing internet traffic.
We have run COMODO Internet Security, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Sypbot - Search and Destroy but only tracking cookies were found.
I now that some unknown program is running because I have cFosSpeed installed and it shows all the current connections on my computer.
In the "Current Connections" window uTorrent.exe appears 40+ times under the "Program" column as both tcp and udp.
Under the "17_prot" column all udp lines say "Unknown" while most all tcp lines say "Torrent".
This udp-Unkown combination happens with others programs such as googlechrome.exe or svchost.exe but it's mainly uTorrent.exe.
When my roommates open their "Current Connections" window uTorrent.exe appears once along with their web browser and any other program that requires an internet connection.
I have been completely unaware of this and it has only just recently been discovered so I don't know how it came to be or when.
I would like to know what's going on in case thi... Read more

I know nothing of torrent programs but I would check my settings.Try these two scansSome types of malware will disable Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it first.Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file file and rename it to mysetup.exe.Double-click on mysetup.exe to start the installation. If that did not work, then try renaming and changing the file extension. click this link if you do not see the file extensionRight-click on the mbam-setup.exe file, rename it to mysetup and change the .exe extension to .scr, .com, .pif, or .bat.Then double-click on mysetup.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to begin installation. If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files.Right-click on mbam.exe, rename it to myscan.exe.Double-click on myscan.exe to launch the program. If that did not work, then try renaming and change the .exe extension in the same way as noted above.Double-click on myscan.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to launch the program. If using Windows Vista, refer to How to Change a File Extension in Windows Vista.Be sure to update MBAM through the program's interface (preferable method) or manually download the definition updates and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Then perform a Quick Scan in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will p... Read more
