Jerky Scrolling when using Mousewheel in IE7

Question: Jerky Scrolling when using Mousewheel in IE7

I'm noticing a weird annoyance when using the mousewheel to scroll in IE7. It jerks about 20 pixels every second for about 5 or 6 times. I think it has to do with the fact that I'm using a Logitech Wireless Mouse but I'm not sure. Has anyone else notice this problem and if so know of a way to fix it?

Preferred Solution: Jerky Scrolling when using Mousewheel in IE7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Jerky Scrolling when using Mousewheel in IE7

it maybe IE7 itself. it is still in BETA. may want to check the discussion boards on the following link. someone may have reported that type of problem.

I'm giving Edge a go on my desktop PC, however scrolling pages with the mouse wheel is headache inducing. When I scroll down a page, it snaps/jerks down, and isn't smooth like it is in Firefox; In Edge, the page 'clicks' down and stops in sync with each click of the scroll wheel rather than have the smooth 'momentum' effect you get when clicking and dragging the scroll bar.
It's a deal breaker for me, as when reading text, scrolling jumps down and I loose my place, and browsing around pages is jerky as heck.
I've changed mouse properties and reduced the scrolling from 3 to 1 line at a time, but it still jerks down, just in smaller increments.
I can't see any smooth scrolling plugins for Edge. Is this normal behaviour, or is there a setting I'm missing?

I have no reason to migrate from Lotus 123 to Excel as it gives me all the functionality I need. I have tried using Excel but find that for what I do, Excel is more difficult to use. However having recently moved to Windows 7 I now find that I can no longer scroll within a 123 Spreadsheet with my mouse wheel. Prior to this change in Windows I was using a driver called Flywheel from Planet Crafters which provided the scrolling capabilty and other wheel enhancements. I can find references to Flywheel on the web but no downloads. Can anyone help me find Flywheel or have another fix for scrolling in 123.

How can I disable Ctrl+[Mousewheel Scroll] zooming of webpages?

Answer:Stop Mousewheel from Scrolling in Browsers

I don't know that you can, I'm not sure but think it's built into the browser. Have you checked your mouse properties to see what they are set at ?

The only other thing I could suggest is don't scroll the mousewheel while holding the Ctrl button

Ok, onto my second issue.

The computer i'm fixing (3ghz Intel, 512mb Ram) has had scrolling issues before and after the format. It is the same on firefox or IE in that whenever you scroll down a page using either the mouse or the keyboard, it jerks heavily, as if it's loading the whole page again every second.

The mouse is a wired old Logitech model.

Can anyone help with my scrolling problem in Firefox 1.0.6? Instead of smoothly scrolling as I arrow down or use the mouse wheel, the screen moves in jumps as if it's refreshing each view (or something!) I only have this problem with the browser. Everything else scrolls OK. I did a HijackThis scan and here is the result:

Edit by bjgarrick: Unrequested, Inline HJT log removed!
Can anyone see what might be gumming up the works? Any help would be appreciated - it's driving me nuts!

Answer:Jerky Scrolling

If you believe the problem may be malware realted then:

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Otherwise, have you uninstalled and installed Firefox 1.0.7 to see if that fixes your problem.

Question: Scrolling is jerky

I recently downloaded Jing. I used it once, didn't like it and removed it. Since that time I've been troubled with an issue with the screen only when I scroll. Instead of it moving up or down smoothly, it gives the appearance of "refreshing" itself each time. It's unusual, hard on the eyes, and probably shouldn't do that! I've checked mouse settings, screen resolution and can't find a fix!

Is may be just me but scrolling up and down through posts in this forum seems slow and jerky compared to eight forums.

If I press the arrow keys to scroll up and down then it scrolls a bit, pauses for a split second and then carries on a bit more before pausing again. Is this just me or is it some design to make it work better on phones or something?

I tried different themes but it is the same.

It may be specific to your system. I don't have this problem. Try another browser.

If anyone having a jerky/stuttering/lagging when scrolling a webpage in Firefox, here's a fix.

Type in "about:config" in Firefox (address bar) and enter general.smoothScroll under filter. Double click on general.smoothScroll to set it to true.

Or else just install add-on smoothwheel.

I don't understand why they didn't set it to smooth scrolling to true in the first place. First I thought Firefox 3.5.1 was buggy and lagging when tryng to scroll but found out that my IE8 scrolling was very smooth.

Please help. I tried this under security but maybe it should have been here. I've check out several boards and seen problems close to mine but the fixes don't work. This started a couple months ago about the time I upgraded Netscape but I can't swear that has anything to do with it. I've always used Netscape because it runs faster for me. When I scroll it is either very slow or it stops for a few seconds and then jerks to catch up. Typing does the same thing. I will type several words before they all of a sudden show up on the screen. All this is happens about half the time. I've noticed even when I play Hoyle card games it sometimes is jerkly. I am mostly looking around Ebay so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I absolutely never open emails with attachments or click on anything in an email. I use Norton Systemworks, Norton Firewall and I've recently used AdAware and CWShredder. I had a tech person "tune up" my computer, rid of temp. files, defragged, antivirus, etc. My computer is only 1 1/2 yrs. old. Please help me and keep in mind I know more about the Internet than I do the computer itself. This has taken all the joy out of being on line.

Had no idea where to post this question, it kind of lands in a grey area, but seeing as my O/S is XP, thought this would be the most suitable place to start.

I have just performed a clean install, and am in the process of adding, all my AV, and program software. I have however noticed, that when I scroll with my mouse wheel, down the page, it kind of ripples rather than smoothly scrolling.

Have I maybe set my screen up at the wrong resolution? I didn't install any monitor drivers during the install, cos hey, the monitor is working after all. Could something be missing though?

It's not a major issue, but I would like to iron out all these little niggles early on to keep things working tip top.
Please feel free to suggest if this post would be better served in a browser area of the forum, or anywhere else for that matter.

Running Win.Xp Pro 64 - Page scrolling is slow and jerky especially on IE.
Looked at all the usual answers from Mouse to smooth scrolling, but fix eludes me. Where am I going wrong, more detail available if needed.

Answer:Page Scrolling slow and jerky

Hi Peter,

Running Win.Xp Pro 64

I take it that all of your drivers are up to date. Getting drivers for XP x64 can be a bit of a nightmare due to lack of support for x64 XP. There is better support for 64bit OS in Vista and above.

Can you post your full specs. Download and run Speccy for me. Once the program has gathered the required information, go to the top of the Speccy window and do File>Publish Snapshot. Click Yes when prompted. Now copy and paste the URL address that it gives you to your next post.

When did you first notice the issue?

Answer:Chromebook scrolling jerky and hesitates

Hi croths,
So the step of logging into the Guest account is a great first step. The idea behind is that you wouldn't have any of your personal applications or settings loaded, and can isolate if the issue is related to the software (operating system or hardware). Considering it was better, but not perfect(?) the next step would be do a 'power wash' which will rebuild the OS and let you start over. It's quick and takes just a couple of minutes, but if you have personal data you want to save, you'll need to back that up first.
Here are steps to do a powerwash:
Next step would be to do a full system recovery, you can download an OS onto a flashdrive and install it onto your Chromebook. Here are steps:
Finally, if you're still having trouble I would suggest contacting support as it may be a hardware issue we need to address for you.
Hope this helps,Cory

Ok i decided to get rid of my dell 1.8ghz 2gb ram 80gb hdd laptop and bought:

A hp compaq 2.0ghz core2duo, 3gb ram, 320gb hdd just to 'have the best' and now i wish i didnt 'downGrade'. Other specs inc: IE7, xp pro sp3.

Right issue is: Whereever there is a scrolling box or webpage, for instance if i google something then scroll from top to bottom it will be smooth till about half way then it will jerk and be delayed for a second or 2. Its not webpage specific it will happen even if i goto say internet options then advanced tab and scroll on that it will jerk. On the odd occasion it will be SO BAD it looks as if my vga card drivers are not installed. Also if i click something then start typing it will not pickup the first letters/numbers i type, this is also frustrating as if im typing a password it wont pick up the first digits and i have to start again. Also when highligting text it again wont highlight it all it will pause/stop for a second or 2 before highlighting what i want it to. To solve the issue with no luck ive tried the following:

reformat laptop (xp pro sp3)
Install all drivers possible
control panal>mouse>wheel>1 as following amount of lines per time

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem with Internet Explorer (who doesn't?). I have a wheel mouse and when I use it to go up and down a page, it used to scroll smooth as silk, but now the screen jerks and lags. Its really annoying. Only been doing it a couple of days. I just upgraded from 128mb to 256mb, and it still does it. This also happens in text documents.

Also, when I open new windows, or when pages load with new windows, they don't pop up anymore, they minimize to the bottom of the screen and I have to right click+maximize to bring it up. About one out of every 10 or so times, they won't come up at all. I can't figure out what is causing this at all.

The first problem might just be some setting with the mouse. I went into Control Panel/Mouse and played around with the number of lines (the default is 3) but it didn't help.

Any suggestions? Both of these problems seemed to have started at the exact same time (about 4 days ago).

I have an HP Pavilion 7960
256 RAM
1.3 ghz
Windows XP Pro

Thanks everyone

Sounds like you have adware/spyware in there somewhere.

First Delete Temp files, Cookies and offline content. To do this,
Open Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/delete cookies/delete files

Download cwshredder from here

Close all browser windows (including minimized windows)
Run cwshredder

When it is finished Reboot your computer.

Download Adaware from here

Go here

Make sure you select "Check for updates now" and get the latest reference files.

Run Adaware and hit the Scan now button, make sure Activate indepth scan is selected and then
hit next. After the scan has completed delete everything it finds.

Restart your computer.

Then Download Spybot search & destroy from here. Read the instructions while you're there.

Install the program (Close all browser windows) and run it.

Before scanning press "Online" and "Search for Updates"

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click "Check for Problems" and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds in red.

Restart your computer.

Download "Hijack this" from here
Once you have unzipped it and have it running, Hit the scan button, when the scan is finished the button will change to a save log button, click it and then ... Read more

Okay, so my computer is a compaq hp professional. And It's a hand me down but we did get a reboot cd.
A week ago, my computer got a HUGE malware infection and I had to reboot the whole computer. So it's nice and clean now.

But the problem is when I'm on IE or FF, the scrolling is veryveryvery jerky and I took off the smooth scrolling so it would be faster. I even upgraded it. So I'm running on IE7 and FF 3.
Even making the windows smaller and moving them across the screen is jerky.
Help for that, please.

Another thing is that the speakers will not work. And I thought it was just the speakers at first so I tried headphones but that didn't work either. I tried going to the Start -> Accessories -> Volume Control because there was no speaker icon.
And I got this message;
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware.

And so I followed the directions but I couldn't find that Printers and Other Hardware folder.
So I looked it up online and some suggested to go to the Sounds, Audios, etc folder and make sure it's on speaker. (or something like that)
But in the Audio tab, everything was grayed out.
Please help on that too.

Answer:Jerky Scrolling, No sound from speakers or headphones.

After you reinstalled Windows, did you install video and sound drivers? It sounds like you didn't. The video driver will get rid of the jerky scrolling.Audio drivers will restore sound. Do you have any other cd's for the computer other than the one you mentioned? Your drivers may be on it. If you don't have cd you will have to download the drivers from HP.You can search for the drivers you need at HP support. If you have any problems finding the correct drivers, please post back and let us know the make and model of your computer.

Edit: He also wants to know if installing SP2 could have caused it. The problem arose around the time he installed SP2.

Answer:Halo Mousewheel

If he has a restore point from before the SP2 and driver install he should try rolling back and see if that fixes the problem.

I recently installed W7 on a Dell Inspiron and the mouse wheel no longer works as it previously did on XP. I tried updating the driver on the mouse but it said it was up to date already. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the mouse working properly again? It says it is a PS/2 Compatible Mouse.

Answer:Problem with Mousewheel

You can get driver for the mouse from Dell, I found this link:Dell - Drivers and Downloads
I did have the same problem in my Acer laptop, I have downloaded the Vista 32bit driver for my Synaptics from
Drivers | Synaptics
Installed the driver without uninstalling the old driver, then adjusted the settings for my touch pad scroll button.
See the attachments for general idea. Could you also give us the exact model.

Just accidently discovered a neat feature with MyIE2 browser. When I have mutiple pages open, I can tab through the pages by hovering the cursor over the toolbar where the pages are listed and turning the mouse wheel. I now use this in place of the F2 and F3 keys to tab pages.

The more I use MyIE2, the better I like it. Been running it now for a week and have yet to see a popup ad. It's quick and doesn't come up with the ol M$ "send an error report" malarkey. In this session alone (about 10 minutes) the killed popup counter is at 20.

Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to bind the mwheel click to a right click.

I need to do this because I have a shitty 'Nexxtech' laser mouse that's left click broke off.

Thus I inverted the left & right click so that my right click is my old left click.

But now I don't have a functioning right click, and I would like to set it so when I click my mouse wheel in, it right clicks.

Any ideas?

Answer:Binding Mousewheel to Right Click

Open control panel, click on input devices or mouse and set each button and the scrollwheel to what you want.

To change the volume level on Linux just put the little arrow-click on the audio icon on the taskbar and use the mouse wheel without having to click. This is possible in Windows Seven, changing some configuration in the system?

Answer:How to Change volume level only with mousewheel

To change volume level is to change volume level in some application. So for example winamp and VLC media player will allow you to scroll the wheel to adjust volume change, this is set in the preferences of those applications. Like wise in other media applications, you just need to fiddle around. I don't know about doing this for the desktop/system sounds.

OK, I'm having an odd problem with Firefox that has been bugging me for a while. If I'm browsing a page with a lot of pictures (it seems to happen on forums specifically) at some point I'll encounter an image that has a gray box blocking part of the middle of the picture. This gray box will always extend past the right edge of the picture as well. In addition, I will be unable to scroll down further with my mouse wheel until I've scrolled past the picture at which point the mouse wheel resumes operating normally.

I'm using Firefox and the only extension I'm using is the "Download Statusbar."

Here's an example screenshot of what's going on (scaled down by 33% but it should give you an idea of what I'm seeing.)

Does anyone have any ideas? This has been going on for a while with several of the latest revisions of Firefox 2.0.

Answer:Odd firefox problem - gray box in images, can't scroll past with mousewheel

That seems to happen if you block images/ads with adblocker.

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 14. 2Gb Memory Core2Duo.

I can;t scroll Sideways but I can going up and down.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Touchpad not scrolling Sideways. But scrolling Up & Down

On both my Acer aspire one netbook (synaptics) and my Lenovo notebook (alps) I need to tab twice on the lower edge of the touchpad (to gain its attention?!?) and then it will scroll. Beyond that I believe you need to take a walk on the Dell support web site. There are number of 14xx models so you need to follow the steps there to find the freshest driver for your particular model. On both of mine the newest drivers have given scrolling as well as "pinching" to re-size pages, photos etc.

When I operate the scroll bar, instead of a smooth scroll down or up the page, the scrolling occurs in jerks, making the page appear to "ripple". I am using windows XP. In addition, when I watch DVDs the crarity is not so good. It has only just started happening. Any ideas?

Answer:Strange scrolling or wobbling scrolling

Does this happen to the entire screen or portions of the screen (like a horzontal line), or just with the scroll bars?

I recently updated/upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. The default mouse settings is to scroll using two fingers. I want to go back to using one finger to scroll on the right side of my mouse pad on my laptop. I have tried the settings for the mouse including the advanced settings. I clicked on device settings and then settings underneath that, which led me to a different window. When I clicked on the scrolling portion, it gave me pinch zoom and rotating.
All other forums have told me there should be a one finger scroll and two finger scroll tab under scrolling. I don't know if this is an option for 8.1, or if I am just not finding where I should be looking, but this is an issue for me.
Thank you!

Answer:How do I change my mouse settings from two touch scrolling to one touch scrolling?

Check your laptop manufacturers website for trackpad/touchpad drivers for Windows 10.
My Thinkpad in the Mouse Settings (advanced) has a section for the trackpad and I can set this so perhaps your drivers are not up to date for your device. I know a friend had to manually download those for his Dell to make that work like he wanted.

Did you install the latest video driver after the fresh installation of Win 2K?  Does Device Manager indicate any problems?  Run dxdiag (Start, Run, and enter dxdiag), select the Display tab, and run the tests.  Any problems indicated there?

Question: Jerky DVD

Hi,I have an older eMachine with 256M RAM (Maxed out) running Win2K Pro.  I used to be able to play DVD movies on it using InterActual player. Awhile ago I did a system clean up, reformated the HD and reinstalled a freash Win2K on it. Ever since then, I can't play DVD on it any more. Besides from reinstalled OS and PowerDVD, hardware wise it's the same as before. I know this old dog can handle DVD since it was playing fine before. I just don't understand why it doesn't do it any more. :-? What causes the DVD to play jerky? Did I miss some configuration?MacPC

Answer:Jerky DVD

So, you used InterActual player before the OS reinstall and now you're using PowerDVD, right?  Can you reinstall InterActual and try it again?  Do you have your resolution and other display settings (monitor refresh rate, color, etc.) set the same as before the OS reinstall?  Are you usng the same video driver now as before the OS reinstall? How does the rest of your new software configuration compare to the old?  Same anti-virus?  Same firewall?  Same programs running in the background?  Etc.?Have you run Disk Cleanup since your OS reinstall?  You may have a lot of files in your Temp folder; might help to clean it out.

Hello and welcome to TSG.

If you go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, you might see a yellow mark beside one or more of the entries and that signifies something hasn't yet found the right driver since you reinstalled. It may be graphics or mouse in your case. Right click on it and go to Properties then click on Update Driver. If you're connected to the Internet and have the right settings, the system should wander around your computer and the Net in search of a more appropriate driver. if it doesn't, please post back for some more detail as to how to track them down.

Hi, I am having a problem with my computer. My computer is running unbelievably slow, takes 15 mins just to start up and is very jerky. My CPU usage is off the charts, with almost nothing running. I cant even play any music or movies because it skips too much. It is a HP 1.73 ghz and 504mb of ram. Please can some one help!!

Answer:Computer very jerky!

Hello David Judd

Look in Task Manager to see what is using all the CPU.
Click the column header to put the CPU usage in order of amount used.

Also check in msconfig and disable everything not needed to run at startup.
Start/Run and type in

Startup Tab
Keep the page open then go to one of the links below. They will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. They will also identify any malware. Disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

When you reboot you will get a message saying you have started in "Selective Startup" Click "Don`t show this message again" then OK

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for my problem but I figured I'd start here.

The problem I'm having is that after a day or so of use my computer starts to lag/stutter in certain programs. The first indication my system has gone crappy is my real media files stutter during playback, getting worse the longer my PC is kept on. Next I noticed that certain video games like X3 and Crysis started doing the same thing. Restarting my computer fixes the problem but this is far from an optimal solution.

Originally I'd thought bad video codecs in real media but I can't explain why only 2 of the 6 games I've got on here stutter. Weird, at least to me, is that all of my other forms of video media work fine as do the rest of my games.

Any ideas would be great or even just an idea where this question would be better served, if not here.

Question: Jerky & Slow

My PC (Acer) suddenly started to run slowly and very jerky. This happened yesterday morning after I started it up (I had shut it down the night before).
When typing there is a noticeable delay between hitting a letter and it appearing on screen. Scrolling is very jerky with pauses in all browsers and offline as well. Any program or picture that is opened also opens in stages (jerks) instead of all at once. Microsoft saves all drivers are up to date.

Question: Jerky Dvd Play

Yesterday when my daughter tried to play a dvd the sound and video were all jerky, I know it was working ok up to about 2 weeks ago, and as far as I know i have not changed any settings. One thing I did notice was that there was an icon for ffdshow on the far right of the taskbar, I do not remember installing this and it would not allow me to close it. When i now put a disc in the drive the listing under my computer just stays as DVD-RW Drive (D:) whereas it used to change to show what disc was in there and I cannot get the drive to auto play at all, even to get audio cd's to play i have to clock on the drive in my computer and click on the track I want to play. Any help and suggestions appreciated.

Question: Jerky DVD playback

I have a problem on an old computer running XP Pro and Power DVD 4. The computer is a P2 450 with 256M, Voodoo3 16M graphics card and Sound Blaster 128 sound card. The video stream is jerky. On looking at Windows Task Manager Performance it shows CPU usage at 100%. I have DMA enabled on both Primary and Secondary IDE channels. The hard disc is freshly formatted under NTFS and the only thing running which takes resources is the wireless LAN adapter. If that is disabled the video improves slightly and CPU usage hovers between 90 to 100%. If I remove the sound card and have the LAN disabled, then I get smooth video with CPU usage down to about 60 to 70%. I have tried swapping the DVD drive from Secondary Master to Primary Slave.I have a lesser computer, with the same configuration, Windows XP Pro, a P2 350 with 128M with an ATI 32M graphics card, same sound card, same wireless LAN adapter, and it runs Power DVD 4 perfectly showing CPU usage hovering between 50 to 60%. I have swapped the graphics cards over, the RAM, the Pentium processors, the DVD drives, and still cannot get the DVD to run smoothly on the higher spec computer. I have dropped the screen resolution from a normal 1024 x 768, 32 bit colour, 75hz refresh, down to 800 x 600, 16 bit colour, 60hz refresh, and still poor video. The hard discs are identical. Both computers run the same version of DirectX.The only fundamental difference between the two computers is the mother board, both are PC Partner BX boards using VIA... Read more

Answer:Jerky DVD playback

I would have thought it must be to do with the software environment, after all you have tried with the hardware. Have you gone through and disabled every piece of software you can think of?Also, have you got the DVD drive set to DMA on both systems, and have you got the Via 4-in-1 drivers up to revision? - these make big difference to IDE performance. Have you got the DVD on a seperate IDE channel to the main HDD?

Question: Jerky HD Video

I recently purchased a Gateway DX4200 series pc. Processor is a Phenom X4 9100e 1.8 ghz. 4 gb ram. I added a Sapphire HD HD3450 512mb DDR2 video card. I'm using a Acer 22" widescreen monitor. OS is Vista Home Premium 64. Right out of the box this pc was very sluggish loading screens, applications, etc. I purchased it with the intent of adding a tv tuner card and recording HD Video and watching it on the pc or streaming it to a 42" tv using a media extender. However all HD content I have found on the net is jerky or choppy when watching full screen. This includes Hulu, Fox, NBC, etc. This also applies to HD video that has been downloaded from NBC instead of just streaming from the web. After adding the video card it is no better. I mistakenly thought that shifting the video memory to a dedicated card instead of using the 128 mb shared video on board might improve this. My Vista perfomance scores are Processor 5.7, Memory 5.9, Graphics (desktop) 3.5, Gaming 4.0 and Hard drive in the 5's. After updating the video card I went to AMD and updated the drivers and ATI Catalyst. What can I do to make the video play smoothly? Also I'd like the entire system to move a little faster, loading programs, web pages, etc. I can watch NBC HD video full screen with none of the hesitation problems on a old HP pavilion with a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz processor, connected by wireless g, running Win XP. Is it the 1.8 ghz processor thats the problem?

Hi. Now, i'm not going to bore you with some lame sob story or anything. I'm just going to give you the straight facts. I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 6000d. the problem is that my dad is a jerk. okay, i can't resist, here comes the sob story. I'm eighteen. My dad is a fifty-year-old four-year-old. when he first gave me the computer i was thrilled. this was the first time that i had ever gotten a brand new computer. before that, i always got his old one when he got a new one. (granted this was okay because he always got top of the line, but his idea of the perfect computer was that of a business exec, small, light, and power conscious) When he gave it to me, however, he only needed one sentence to completely crush me. I wasn't going to be an administrator. I was devastated. Of course, he figured that i was going to install all sorts of games on my pc. not true. i have long since come to the conclusion that, if you are going to play video games on a PC, then you need to have one completely dedicated to gaming, which i don't. Now i have a 7 day trial for Keyhole PRO. for those of you who don't know what keyhole is, it is a program that provides access to the entire mapping industry. In other words, its like a spy satellite uplink only not live. Answer:Xp Slow And Jerky Somebody Please HELP!

If I understand what you have said you 1st installed WIN 98 and then installed the XP upgrade. OK, if so, you do not have to install WIN 98. Backup any files you may need to floppy - CD, etc. You need both the WIN 98 & XP Upgrade discs. Put the XP Upgrade in and reboot system. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD. It has been a awhile since I installed an upgrade but follow the prompts. At some point, if you don't reformat the drive, it well detect the WIN 98 OS and ask if you want to over right it. You do! You should be prompted about formating you hard drive. I would go with the FULL format to NTFS. Along the way you will be prompted to insert your WIN 98 CD. M$ just wants to check that you do have a previous WIN OS that is eligible for the upgrade. WIN 98 is. All it does is check the CD then it should tell you to take it out and put the XP Update CD back in. Kick back and enjoy the ride. I probably don't have the exact sequence listed but if you ran the upgrade before you know how to follow the prompts. Bottom line--you don't need to install WIN 98 at all!!!

Good Luck

I have a 4 year old 1 Ghz speed Mesh computer with a 32Mb Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400 graphics card. For viewing DVDs I have the version of PowerDVD that came with the PC. Operating system is XP Home. Drivers for the graphics card are up to date (as judged by XP).There is a problem viewing some DVDs. Sound is uninterrupted, but the picture continually stops and starts, as if the graphics card can't keep up with the DVD. The strange thing is, the problem only occurs on Warner Brothers DVDs. Also; the same thing occurs on all my Warner Brothers DVDs without exception. Does anyone understand what's going on here?

Answer:Jerky DVD playback...sometimes

At a guess it seems that WB discs have a lot more data to pass.Jerky repro is usually indicative of lack of memory.Make sure that you have no programs running the B/Gthat could be closed down.A copy of Enditall -click here will help here

Question: Jerky DVD playback

I have jerky DVD playback on my laptop!

I am running a PIII 1100, 496 megs RAM and Windows XP, plus WinDVD decoder and a variety of players.

Until yesterday it was playing DVD movies perfectly, now suddenly they look really jerky.

The sound seems fine, and audio CDs play fine. It's just the video images that are bad.

Why the sudden change? Any ideas?

(I tried to send this earlier but i don't think it worked - don't penalise me if this is the second time!)

Answer:Jerky DVD playback

Good question would be what has changed since the last time you used it and it performed correctly.

Install any new software, hardware ????
Change resoloution settings for video ????
Make any changes to the dvd player?????

What about background tasks running, if you use control alt delete and end task on unnecessary tasks does the playback improve?

Question: Jerky Mouse

I searched but could not find a solution. I was using a Microsoft Optical Mouse(wired). It was jerky so I upgraded to a Microsoft wireless laser. It is also jerky and sticky. Any ideas?

Answer:Jerky Mouse

I have had some experience with jerky mice caused by the surface you are using the mouse on. Try putting something with a texture and variegation under the mouse and see if it makes a difference.

Question: Jerky playback?

Hi all,

I get this intermittent problem with MCE when watching recorded programs. The playback will become "jerky" and quite often the sound will be normal.

I've tried reformatting but I still get the problem. I've got the latest graphics cards drivers and codecs.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Jerky playback?

Have you checked your hardware to make sure that all is running well? What about your Reliability and Performance reports? Is it possible another program starts running in the background (for example, something that is network intensive, as for some odd reason the new UI doesn't like necessarily mixing network activity and sound activity)?

Question: Jerky cut-scenes

Hi everyone

I recently had to buy a new display card. The motherboard's about 4 years old and has an AGP slot. It was a mission to FIND any AGP display cards, but I got hold of a FORSA GeForce 6600 after a lot of searching. I'd never heard of this brand (from Hong Kong) but it uses the Nvida chip which kimda redeemed it!

After I installed it, I found that an adventure I'm playing (Journey to the centre of the earth) is very jerky (stop start stop start....during the cut-scenes) It does this too with my fave motor racing game "le Mans 24 hours". Makes the car look like it's filled with kangaroo petrol.

I'm sure the store is going to say there's nothing wrong wih it, but I put this down to the display card. I'm open to correcvtion. This never happened woth my old card. Does any of you kind folk have any tweaks or walkaroimds to override this jerkiness and have it play smoothly? I've tried both games on a friend's computer and it is perfect - so it's not the games.

I've tried reducing the resolution right down to 600x800, reduced colour depth to 16 bit. I "thought" it may be a sound isssue because the sound jerks in tandem to the imagery. I lowered the sound accelerarttion, but that didn't help neither. Oh yes, I installed the latest drivers off Nvidia's website but it made no difference.
