Email Client Outlook, OE or Thunderbird?

Question: Email Client Outlook, OE or Thunderbird?

I have been using pcs for over 20 years but have always "followed the leader". My new pc has both OE and Outlook. My old PC which is wifi networked to the new one has OE, a large folder collection, five years worth of emails and a large addressbook. I am looking for suggestions for an email client and why. I have Comcast for an ISP. The new PC is a Compaq Presario P4 with 2.4 GB Mem, 200GB HD, Norton security suite.

Thanks for any help.

Preferred Solution: Email Client Outlook, OE or Thunderbird?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,After my last Vista update I can't login to my email. The email server is found but can't login(authenticate). Doesn't matter which client I use like Outlook or Thunderbird. Webmail for the same account works fine.First thought it was a firewall/antivirus(Mcafee) problem. Shutting it all down doesn't help, also the logs don't show anything.Any help is much appreciated.Pim

Answer:Cant login to email from client like outlook or thunderbird

Check your email account settings, in particular make sure that for the outgoing server (SMTP) you tick the option for "My outgoing server requires authentication", Then tick the box for "Use same settings as my incoming server".Click 'OK' to save new settings, then restart the email client.

I use T-Bird (v 31.7.0) On 2 occasions now, I have sent emails, with Attachments, to a friend in the UK, who is running HOTMAIL.On each occasion the Attachment is OK, but the message I sent with ti increases it?s Font size, line by line, until it is unreadable. Two 3 or 4 characters per line??and sections of the email are repeated. 4 or 5 lines, then back to the top. They are blaming me for a Virus?..but I am thinking the problem is their end, with a stuck key, or similar. Any ideas ?

Answer:thunderbird email change font size in hotmail email client

I don't know what is causing this but pretty sure "what it isn't".1. It is not the usual behaviour of a virus.2. It is not a stuck key their end. Keys don't come into the equation for received emails.Try sending an attachment to yourself and some other contact who will co-operate. That way you should be able to narrow down which end is responisible for the problem.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Anyone know anything about thunderbird??I am trying it and it seemed very satisfactory, but noting nothing received for a while I sent myself a test message. The message sat with my ISP (Demon) for some hours - I checked with web mail. I have now opened Outlook express and the message was downloaded immediately.Thunderbird is selected as my default email client; I have it set to check for messages every ten minutes (I have always on broadband); I checked for new messages manually several times. A number of emails were received yesterday.I hope to be notified of responses to this via Thunderbird, but I will check with Outlook express ev ery few hours. If any has experience of Thunderbird I'd be interested to hear what they think of it.PeterC

In addition to the Firefox update posted by another contributor elsewhere, those of you that changed to the Thunderbird Email client, can now find version 1.0.2Mozilla simply states, it is a security and stability update. I can't see any more information than that!I loaded it without any drama in about five minutes. As a precaution, I backed up my Thunderbird Profile (just in case), Un-installed Thunderbird via Control Panel, made sure there was a clean folder to reinstall into and installed the new version. Works perfectly, automatically picking up your existing Profile into the new version.

I've been using webmail forever and I figure one of these clients would be a lot easier for me. I'm leaning towards thunderbird, mostly because I'd have to pay for pocomail, but if there is a huge advantage to using pocomail over thunderbird, or if thunderbird has certain flaws I'd pay for pocomail.

I've read a few posts by mosin and some others, and I guess pocomail is more secure. But I've never had any email viruses, I use NOD32 and ProcessGuard now so I'm hoping I'd be safe enough

Answer:which email client... thunderbird? pocomail?

I use Thunderbird here without issue...never heard of PocoMail before though...

I have been a long time user of Thunderbird. It does its job even though its a bit wonky at times.

It's become stale to me so I searched high and low for a replacement and found eM Client. So far I am really impressed with it. It seems to be more thought out and fluid. Maybe because its new I am enjoying it?

Whatever the case may be if you are bored with your client and wanna get dirty with another program check it out. If you have eM Client let me know what you think of it.

Thank you for helping me find a new email client. I was using 2012 WLM and being Microsoft is dropping it I looked for a new one. I tried a few and even paid for some and they all seemed to have glitch's.
I've been using Thunderbird now for a few months...But Thunderbird is so much better then the others and WLM especially. So glad I found this forum years ago. Thanks again to those who suggested and helped me set it up.

Answer:Thunderbird email client is so nice thank you members

No probs mate I think I was involved in that thread and yes it is good eh?? What I do like about it is that it can be configured to look like the WLM GUI although it takes abit of fiddling around with to get the gist of it.

I can see where one can choose which email client to use as the default in the system settings, but Thunderbird is not listed in the available options.

Answer:How do I make Thunderbird my default email client?

Try and set it within Thunderbird itself under options.

Although I'm surprised it doesn't show..

Mine wasn't listed as default, there was no entry. Maybe setting it as default in Thunderbird over rides W10. Mine is acting like it is default.

I know this is going to sound really strange, but I wanted to see if anybody else has noticed this.

I am working on a computer for a friend and ended up completely wiping the drive and starting over from scratch.

After getting Windows 10 installed and everything working, I decided to get a free email client. I first tried Windows Live Mail 2012 (it messed up and stopped being able to connect for some reason, saying the comcast server was not responding / timing out).

So then I put Thunderbird on there.

After getting it set up - defaulted to IMAP, whereas Windows Live Mail was using POP3, I noticed a huge number of SPAM messages coming through... the ED type ones as well as some "work from home", "claim your giftcard", "survey winner", loans, etc.

And there were absolutely none from before the time I set up Thunderbird.

So I logged onto the Comcast web mail page to see if any of those emails were showing up there. It turns out, there were none of them.

Now the only thing that makes sense to me, is that either Thunderbird is injecting those SPAM emails or Comcast's IMAP server is compromised.

Has anybody else noticed anything like this?

Again, this is on a computer that is completely clean. The drive was wiped(cleaned) with diskpart, and it has a clean install of Windows 10 so I do not suspect any type of malware or virus.

Answer:Thunderbird email client injecting SPAM?

It's probably a spam filter that's integrated in their mails server that Thunderbird doesn't play nice with. I'm dropping all local mail clients cause it's a "pita" and webmail is much nicer to use in 2016.

Hello.  I hope that you are well and enjoying life in general.
Having lost Eudora/WinXP, which did everything I needed, my new Windows 7 computer is running Thunderbird for emails.  But it can't import address lists and it can't really separate groups of recipients into folders except under a master list that contains all addresses in all folders which is kind of awkward.
Can you recommend a more list-friendly client that I can use for club and customer emails?
Thank you kindly.

Answer:Wanted: List-friendly email client, which Thunderbird isn't

As far as I can tell from this article: , Thunderbird handles address lists just fine.  Perhaps it does it differently than the way you are accustomed to.

Outlook Express was becoming hopelessly dysfunctional, so I installed Thunderbird Sunday night. As of Wednesday the darn thing was still downloading my Inbox over and over and over again, eating up way too much of my processing power. Today I uninstalled Thunderbird and reinstalled it anew. This time was different in that I got the Import Wizard to come up. But now Thunderbird is bogged down in an excruciatingly slow Inbox download which may be repetitive. If the darn thing is still downloading the Inbox tomorrow, I have had it.

I am not interested in webmail. I already have it with my ISP, and that is a good thing. But my unmovable preference is to work with email in a freestanding application. Suggestions for the best freestanding email clients are welcome.

Is anyone aware of an efficient way to move emails (inbox, sent, etc) from Mozilla Thunderbird to Outlook 2010 (not Express)?

Tbird2OE is amazingly slow and introduces some problems of its own.

Answer:Thunderbird to Outlook 2010 - email import?

What's slow about it? Thunderbird is a pretty basic, simple e-mail editor. If it opens slowly or doesn't respond, I suspect you have other problems.

Also, there's no way to natively import e-mails from Thunderbird into Outlook, so you'd have to hunt for a 3rd party tool.

When I try to run Outlook, I get an error message that says: "Outlook requires Outlook Express 4.01 or greater".  Apparently, I inadvertently deleted an Outlook Express library that Outlook shares and now Outlook will not run.  The message says to run "IE5Setup.exe" to reinstall Outlook Express.  I found the program on the CD, but it will not install because there is a later version of IE on the System.  The OS is Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and the Outlook is part of Office XP Standard 2002.I found an article in the MS Knowledge Base regarding this topic, but it doesn't really tell you how to install Outlook Express in XP.  I can't figure out low to download Express from the MS Download Center; so now I'm stuck.Has anyone encountered this problem or know how to fix it?Thanks

Answer:Outlook email client Express doesn't have its own installer, it is an option of Internet Explorer. You will most likely need to reinstall the latest version of Internet Explorer with the Outlook package included.

I need to move 8 of my email accounts to a different PC that already has MS Outlook running on it with a number of other email addresses that I need to monitor. I would prefer not to add the new email addresses to Outlook and would prefer to access them on a separate email client. What are the best choices in this regard? Obviously, Outlook and the client would need to play nice with each other, but that shouldn't be a problem, these days should it? I ask because the last time I needed to do this, I used Outlook and Eudora and they did not have any issues with each other, even running simultaneously. Yes, I know, I am getting old...

I don't think that it exists, but an email client that works with Outlook calendar invites would be ideal.

Answer:Best Non-Outlook Email Client?

I've been using Thunderbird for years and have yet to find anything to replace it. At this point I've migrated all of my accounts over to it and have nothing bad to say about.

As for calendars, I don't really know if you can integrate the Outlook calendar to it. There is an extension called "Lightning". That will integrate with Google calendar but that's as far as I've ever had to go with setting up a calendar in Thunderbird.

And for the record... I followed a near identical upgrade path as you did from the late 90s Eudora to Outlook (up to 2007) then finally just jumped ship. Haven't looked back.

See Attached image.

I have followed each step of the following windows help article.

- Virus scanner is up to date
- Trust centre also says it's status is "valid"
- I have checked the button to 'never warm me....."
- I have checked the registry edited and the key value is 2, which is correct.
- I have restarted the computer after the valid steps to ensure the settings have been enabled.

All of the above still results in the popup message as per the image attached.
This is only happening on one computer, not all of them.

Anyone have any other ideas to try?

I have XP SP2

I just recently got a new ISP so I called tech support to have him help me set up an email account. I prefer to use the email client Thunderbird by Mozilla. But the tech I got could only do it in Outlook Express.

When I go into Tools>Accounts>Properties and choose the Servers tab it says:
Server Information
My incoming mail is a POP3 server.
Incoming mail (POP3)
Outgoing mail (SMTP)

Then right below that it says: Incoming Mail Server
Account name: [email protected]
Password *******

The Remember password box is checked and the Log on using Secure Password Authentication is not.

Then below that you have: Outgoing Mail Server
Then the box: My sever requires authentication is checked and this allowed us to set: Settings

The first thing says: Log on Information then the first radio button says: Use same settings as my incoming mail server This is not selected. The next button says: Logon using and then it says: Account name: [email protected] and Password ******* Under this is a check box that says: Remember password It's checked. Below this is another check box saying: Log on using Secure Password Authentication It's not checked.

So, the names of the servers appears to be and I tried plugging these into Thunderbird as the incoming and outgoing mail servers but it didn't like it. I'm admittedly far from being an expert here. Do I even have enough information?

It seems to work okay, the various folders and their email contents load, but when I close Thunderbird and re-start it, most, if not all, of the imported emails are gone! Hey all

I just happily installed Win7 on my desktop and laptop. Included with that is Office 2010 Beta, which I want to use at least until October, when the trial expires.

I've decided to try and give all the stock MS programs a shot. I've become very irked by the fact that about six different companies offering two different suites with ten different programs in each suite, none of which compat well together, are what I get to sift through until I find my pick. I've currently been running Google Chrome and using GMail. Chrome is really nice, once I got used to the minimal interface. GMail, too, has long been a favorite of mine. However, I have Office and want to full utilize what I see as a great productivity suite, especially compared to Google's online suites, which seems to be still in the shaky ground of beta and new releases.

My issue is this: I've tried importing my GMail into Outlook, but there are a lot of discrepancies. Filters, for one, don't transfer from GMail into Outlook. I have like thirty messages in my inbox that should be in my school box. And I think trying to sync everything up would be a pain in the ass and need constant adjustment, especially since it's already been finnicky in the first day's use.

Is there some awesome way to get Outlook to recognize all my GMail settings? Or should I switch email clients (Which I'm fine to do. I just got a new phone, essentially a new laptop and desktop, and I'm moving, so why not go whole hog and change all... Read more

Answer:Outlook 2010...switch to other email client?

The best way of synchronising gmail and outlook is by the use of IMAP rather than POP3 access.

What this does is any actions performed at one location is duplicated in the other so if you have a rule operating in gmail the result is automatically reflected in Outlook and vice versa and the folder structure is also synchronised.

I actually find that gmails support for IMAP is not the best, (using tags rather than actual folders), but it does work.

A better Service for outlook/imap use is in my opinion Free Webmail and E-Mail by GMX | Sign Up Now!, which also looks more like outlook in use. you may want to have a look at this free service and as it has a mail collector, for your existing gmail account, can ease the transition

Hi there

I'm trying to look for an alternative robust email client to outlook -- want to start gradually moving away from Ms Office to cheaper solutions.

I don't like the way Ms is going with subscription based Office 365 and Office 2013 is IMO "The Pits" - office 2010 works fine but I want where possible to start using alternatives. Libre Office is fine for some things but not quite ready for prime time yet (IMO) especially for EXCEL but I can start moving away from office gradually with an email client first.

The email client must NOT be web or browser based (I Hate webmail type of things) and must support IMAP. I don't want it to have ADWARE or NAGWARE (you know those that keep persuading you "Please update to PRO version etc etc"). It must also support MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS. It should ideally have a similar or identical interface to OUTLOOK -- simple plain, not like the background I've seen on some Gamers machines !!!!

If it can integrate with GMAIL that's fine but not mandatory. Preferably free too .

I did see a portable client ISCRIBE at i.Scribe and InScribe: A Small and Easy to use Email Client but it looks as if it might be a little experimental.

I discarded OPERAMAIL -- don't want any BROWSER or web mail type of stuff.

Linux has some decent choices such as EVOLUTION (probably one of the best if not the best) but Windows seems a bit lacking in this area -- pity OUTLOOK EXPRESS wasn't continued after XP -- it was small, simple and could als... Read more

Answer:alternative email client to Outlook (NOT WEB BASED) please

From my previous post in Need a good email client :
Mozilla Thunderbird. You might be put off by claims about its future (no more development) but it will still be supported for a long time (stability/security fixes still going on). Zimbra Desktop Incredimail Pegasus Mail Opera Mail eM Client Windows Live Mail / Windows 8 Mail App
When have you tried opera mail last ? It should be separate from the browser today (it still uses the old presto engine while the browser uses the chrome one), check here : Opera Desktop Team - Opera Mail

Thunderbird, and Zimbra are all good choices and should fit your requirements. eM Client is very nice but it supports only 2 mail accounts on free version. Pegasus Mail is quite good but the UI is old now and it doesn't feel like outlook. Incredimail has promotional tag lines in your outgoing email and some ads show up.

Not included in this list is Claws Mail - the email client that bites!, since I never tried it. It seems to be OK, it's open source and works on both linux and windows, the interface looks a bit like outlook express, and it supports multiple accounts and IMAP. It might be what you're looking for.

I've recently started getting a pop-up that says "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client."
-it's a pain: it even freezes my games when I'm playing -I figure that if I set Outlook 2k3as default it'll go away but for some reason I can't find the opyion on Outlook 2003 and via CTRL pannel it offers only OE.
-Anyone know how to set Outlook 2003 as the default email?
-another possibility is that my keyboard software that checks my email may be running amok...any ideas?

I want to use Outlook 2002 as an email server and client. Is this possible? If so, how? I don't have an email server, but I do want to send and receive email from within my LAN. Sorta like GroupWise. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Outlook is not a mail server. There are, however, free win32 mail servers available. Check into Mercury or ArGoSoft

This morning none of my email clients will connect to my account. This includes my iPhone and Outlook 2013 on the desktop (Windows 10).

The built in Mail app in Windows 10 will connect. When I go to the web version of Outlook, it says at the top of the page, "Outlook Mail (Preview)". It never said that before.

I have two outlook accounts, one for my business and one personal. The personal acct is acting normal, but the other is not.

Anyways, I can not get my email on the iPhone or Outlook 2013. It keeps asking for the password but doesn't like the password.

The password works fine using the Native Mail client or Web Page, so I know the password is correct.

I purchased a laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium and have installed Microsoft Office 2000 including Outlook. When I go to "set default programs" for inteinternet services Outlook does not show up as a choice. How do I set Outlook as my default email client? I will admit I am not familiar with "Windows Mail". Is it better or is there a reason I should use it as opposed to Outlook? I don't use Outlook for calender or those types of things. I use ACT! as my contact manager. I can put my ACT! email address book in Outlook. Thanks for your help.

So yeah, i still pay for my hotmail email just for the option to be able to use it with outlook Express (OE6)....without POP3.
Long story short, MS is killing OE6 ability to work with hotmail as of Sept 1. 2009!!!
(well except for POP3 access which i cant stand)

I liked thunderbird and the bat, but i really love the abilty to have totally separate identities like the OE6 offers. Not to mention the ability to password protect the entire identity / email client if wanted to with a password. (Without even being able to see any previously downloaded emails and whatnot)

Those are my two main things that i love about OE6 that i surprisingly have yet to find in any other email client....thus why i am still using OE6....and paying for a hotmail email.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Ill have to start my email client search and trials's been about a year since i looked at anything else other than OE6.

Thanks for reading.

Am beginning to wonder if Microsoft ever launch a product that works with other Microsoft products.

First all the browsers no matter where stopped working in windows 8. I tried command prompt as admin netsh winsock r (worked on 1st computer running win 8 that the browsers failed on) , but this had no effect so I did a clean boot which seems to have resolved this issue (2nd computer with win 8 on that the browsers stop working but internet running fine on them.).
Before this was done all of sudden outlook 2013 decided when starting to display the message: Either there is no default mail client or the current client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft outlook and set it as the default mail client.

Now this I have done in all 3 areas, outlook, control panel and internet options within the IE browser. But nothing changes and they were all 3 set as default anyway.

Anyone have any idea why this happening and if there is a fix as I am getting to the point where I am beginning to despair with win 8 and outlook 2013 respectively, and recommend roll backs till they get their act together and sort them out.

I have two client rules set up in my mail server thru my ISP's webmail.

1) If email is from 'a', move email to folder 'a'
2) If email is from 'b', move email to folder 'b'

Now everything works fine and dandy in my webmail, but in Outlook I'm not receiving any emails from 'a' or 'b' at all. Not in my inbox, not in my folders (same name), not anywhere.

Why is this?

Do I have to take the client rules off the ISP's webmail and only implement them in Outlook?

Answer:Outlook 07 - Not receiving certain emails...because of client email server rules

No idea how to do this with POP3.

Either way, I don't think you can have local a and b folders on your computer synch with those on the server.

If you set up IMAP (instead of POP3), you can see a and b folders on the server through Outlook.

The Outlook email client on my Windows 10 phone will not send messages. I have confirmed my SMTP settings. I have deleted the accounts and set them up again from scratch. I can receive but not send. Windows sweetly puts the unsent stuff in the drafts folders where they do me no good at all.
When it does that, I get messages about confirming the email addresses and not sending overly large attachments. The addresses are good. There are no attachments in my "This is a test" messages.
I'd be happy to switch to another client but there seem to be none available. I use Thunderbird on my desktop, Amazon's email client on my Kindle Fire, and I used both the Android basic email client and Google's Android mail client (I don't use gmail addresses however) successfully. I don't use, live, com,,, addresses either. Yes, I know I'm a dirty SOB for not falling into line, but I've used my account for years for my personal stuff and for my business stuff I host my own through a LeaseWeb account.
I received my Windows phone from my son when he switched to iPhone. I thanked him profusely. Now I'm thinking about going back to the highly cooperative Android world. In the meantime, I'd like to be able to shoot a quick email reply now and then using my Windows phone.

Ya ya ya...i dont need to hear the bickering about OE6 and what not.

Basically im looking for a email client that has similar security features that OE6 has, like the option for seperate identity's and the identity passwords mostly. Particularilly how the identity passwords can prevent anyone from even opening the client fully so they cant even read any email that have all ready been downloaded.

If makes no sense why all these other email client are wide open so that anyone can click on a email client (firebird, thebat etc) and just waltz in and start reading emails. And to not even have a full lockdown option is pitiful IMHO.

Yes i could have it not save the passwords to download the emails...but the previously downloaded emails in the client can still be whats the point?!?!.
Thats my main feature concern that im looking for in a email client. And since MS is going to kill the DAV protocol for hotmail in OE6 soon. Im looking for a good alternative email client, and hopefully stop using my hotmail account for good...which is the main reason i use OE6. I now i could use regualr outlook...but again the security issue...and the lack of future portability is also a thought..

Thanks for reading...any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Also IMAP support is very highly preffered.

I am running Vista Ultimate SP1, Outlook 2007 (12.06423.1000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000) with an http Exchange mail account as well as an Outlook Connector for Hotmail plus POP mailboxes.

Recently (since installation of Office SP2) adding a new contact or sending an message with a new email address the email address is not underlined and when attempting to save the contact or send message the following error is displayed:

"The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."

This message also appears even if I try and send meesage by one of the POP accounts.

This is very frustrating as I cannot create new contacts or send new messages. I'd pull my hair out... but I've got none left!

I would appreciate if anyone knows how to fix this issue.

Answer:Outlook 2007 (Exchange client) will not save contact email address

Appreciate that you have correlated the problem to Office 2007 SP2. I am having the same problem with an XP Pro PC using Outlook 2007 connected to Exchange 2003 over Http/RPC. There are two accounts: Exchange and one POP. If I take the Exchange connection "off line" it is possible to add the new email address to the contact. THEN, I can send the email via either Exchange or POP. Also, I cannot send an email to an address that is not already in "contacts", or apparently never sent an email to a particular address. So, same work around. Take Exchange offline and then send email via POP account. With Exchange back online, it is now possible to send to the new email address.

I have been using outlook express for the past 5+ years now and have about 30,000+ messages in about 10 different folders. My largest folder is 18,000+ messages big. The total size of my database is a hair over 1,000MB.

Anyways, at Thunderbird 0.8 I tried to import my Outlook Express emails into Thunderbird. When I did that Thunderbird took a super long time but when it was done it left out several hundred emails. So I said screw it and I uninstalled it.

Now just today I installed Thunderbird 1.0.2. But before doing so I cleaned out the registry and removed my old thunderbird profile. And this time when I imported my email I created more folders (originally about 5, now 10) to spread things out. The import still took a long long time, but at least it did a better job with the import. Here are the numbers that I have. OE = Outlook express emails in a certain folder, TB = the import of OE emails over to Thunderbird.

(Folder 4)

(Folder 6)

(Folder 9)

(The other folders are fine)

Overall this isn't bad in consideration to what happened last time. But still, TB should have imported over every last email.

Does anyone know a work around for this or am I SOL? Because if I can't get it to work with 1.0.2 this is likely the last time I look at Thunderbird as a mail client.

Answer:Is Thunderbird a good client for heavy users? Doesnt look like it.

If you have Outlook, use that. Thunderbird has issues because it's such a "young" program.

My school has recently switched to Google Apps for its email service, now resulting in students having an address of [email protected]. I also started working for a company that uses this email in the form of [email protected]. I would like to be able to access both of these email accounts using Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.

I've been told that by changing the user name for these accounts to include the full email address will allow access as if the account was a regular Gmail account, but I have not been able to make this work. I continue to get an error message:
Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server responded: Username and password not accepted.
This also happens for the mail server

I tried using the Unlock CAPTCHA feature for both accounts. It worked for the [email protected] email address (it unlocked it, supposedly), but not for the [email protected] account. For the edu account, the unlock CAPTCHA responded saying the username and password do not match.

I also just installed the addon Gmail IMAP Account Setup for Thunderbird, which seems to know just what to do. However, with the employee email, I get the error message, "Login to server failed." Hello, I always use web-based email via the browser at home. I do not use an email client(well in the office we have Outlook). I'd like to use Thunderbird at home with a Gmail account that can be used by the kids. Now I am using Avira IS 2012 and would like to make it scan emails through it's mailguard component. I have seen Thunderbird work with Avast IS on my brother's pc but I see that for it to scan all emails the SSL/TSL should be deactivated. I was asking the tech guys at the office about email clients, digital certificates etc and they only remarked "google it" So I came here....Now my questiosn are: a. Is it safe to disable SSL/TSL in an email client? In the office we have that(with Norton Enterprise) and I see an indicator at the bottom of the email message that it was scanned by Norton. b. Can there be an application that can allow me to have SSL/TSL at the same time have Avira scan my emails...? I searched google and found out that in Avira it also has to be disabled to let it scan all emails. c. SSL/TSL is encryption right..? Does not using encryption in email okay..? I mean at home. In the office it's important but at home...opinions please..d. What ports for POP3 IMAP SMTP should I allow Thunderbird to use In the firewall( I use Comodo). If Thunderbird wants connections via other ports other than the default ones...should I allow it or not..?e. Can an email client be run inside a sandbox? Is it sane enough or crazy..? Just... Answer:Thunderbrid email client, Comodo Email Certificates, Avira IS 2012 questions

I would highly recommend that you keep TLS/SSL enabled this makes sure that your password and user credentials are not sent in the clear.

if the AV needs to have this disabled then its not a good AV..

The ports are on the setup page for Gmail:

Digital Certs are expensive to create and use, and only vital for businesses and not home users.

My email client, desktop program PostBox (for Win) has been slowed since I installed BD TS2016 (I'm quite sure this is the reason as it was very fast before, and slowed immediately after...)

I also run WebRoot AV (which does not scan email as per their documentation) and HitmanAlertPro (which could also be affecting my email client, but I uninstalled it to test this somewhat small chance given its just an anti-exploit, and it doesn't seem to have affected it, the client is still slow).

1. I would LIKE BD to scan my email as of course having AV w/o scanning email could in many ways be pointless given email can be a deadly vector for heavy malware.

2. But I don't want my client to be slow. It's not horrible, and I suppose I could tolerate it (basically deleting messages, loading new messages, and the program responsiveness overall, is a bit sluggish compared with its normal instantaneous response)

3. Is there a way to configure email scanning differently? Or should the program NOT be slowing my client noticeably in general, and is this behavior indicative of something being wrong?

I'm sure BD users will be able to comment on whether it slows their email or not given they use a desktop client like Outlook, Postbox, Thunderbird, etc.

Answer:BitDefender Email Scanning Mechanism? Performance Issues w/ email Client

Sadly nothing is easy I'm afraid when using Yahoo webmail unless you have the paid account, Live Mail and Gmail are the better free email accounts, but try the below.....

You can use your Yahoo email address with the Windows Live Email Client, or try Thunderbird as its free too.

BUT note that to setup POP3 account with an email client application you may need a Yahoo Plus account which is a paid for account over the free email account. But you can try Ypops! to set the free email up with POP3 access. Thunderbird + Ypops instructions HERE

Here is the problem: I have my email client (PocoMail) set as my default email client. It shows up as default client in the "Default Program section" in IE7.
When I click on a email link, whether it's in another program or on a website, my email client doesn't open the compose window with the address entered BUT IE7 starts and opens about 80 windows which need to be killed with Task Manager. By the way, this has nothing to do with PocoMail because it also happens when Thunderbird is set as default.

I am stumped. Any ideas?

Hidy ho all,

I wanted to set up an email client that acted a bit like my phone handles email. Downloads the new ones, lets me choose what to do with them (read them, delete them, mark them as special or something) but then simply uploads the instructions to the server without actually deleting them from the server. Is there an email client that does this?

Answer:Email client that doesn't download email?

My Email client, MSN Premium (not Hotmail) will not open to write an email when clicking on any website's button labeled "send us an email". Instead this action causes several instances (up to 5) of IE6 to invoke and then the Op Sys (WinME) hangs until I use Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the erroneously opened IE tasks. I thought maybe it was that MSN mail was not my default email client so I used the proceedure to make MSN mail my default instead of OE6 but each time I returned to the options to see if it had changed it still says my default client is OE. Interestingly, if I envoke the MSN explorer and go to my MSN email inbox I can send and receive my email perfectly. This machine has been up and running since last October. I do not know if the problem has always existed or started more recently since I don't often click on "send us email" buttons.
I have three other machines similarly set up and none of them exhibit this problem.
WinMe, MSN Premium, and MSN messenger 6 all are up to date and current.
McAfee AV is on and up to date.
CounterSpy and Spybot are up to date and actively running.
Firefox 1.0.2 is my default browser

Answer:Solved: Clicking "send us an email" hangs system and will not open my email client.

Specifically if using the portable form of Opera Mail, the mail client available from
I tried looking at many articles from internet searches but found nothing telling where to find the folder holding the email messages for the email client.  My copy of portable Opera Mail is on a usb flash drive.  I have tried looking through the folders for the application but still do not know how to recognize any email messages.

Answer:Where on desktop is email for email client?

You do understand that downloading apps like this from most 3rd party sites poses all sorts of security risks, Remember this, That software while it was made by WhoEver has now been modified by somebody, How was it modified, Who did it, What else did they put in it? I may be wrong here however I also think may be against most software developers TOS to use modified software like this.
FYI only.
While Opera is free some sites and some people have used " the making of a app portable" on paid for software to bypass  having to pay for the software. I used to do just that a long time ago. I now know and understand why it is bad.
Making XXXXbytes premium into a portable application. While creating the portable you use a genuine key or "other" methods to activate Then compile it as portable with the activation in place, Now anybody with XXXXbytes portable has a free premium copy instead. That's software piracy. And Theft.

Question: Thunderbird email

Hi,I have used thunderbird ( I believe a division of Mozilla Firefox ) for a few years now with no problems.Suddenly now having a problem with computer code. When I forward emails there is one full page of it before the original email is shown.I have tried to contact the company to no avail.Their support system seems to be non existence.I have deleted it on this machine and on another one at the same time.Reinstalled both machines (both vista) with no difference still had code in all the forwarded mail.People want to know what the gibberish is all about. If there is an answer I would be very thankful. Concerned EmailerEdit: Topic moved from Windows Vista to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Answer:Thunderbird email

Open Thunderbird in safe mode (instructions below)
If doing this solves the problem, the "code" you are getting is as a result of a recent add on update.
Restart Thunderbird in normal mode, deactivate/disable ALL add ons......and then enable them again ONE at a time.
In other words....the process of elimination will show the add on causing this (if in fact that is the case ! )
At the end of this process, all will be well !
Post again, and let me know.
Edit:   btw...Welcome back ! has been a while since your last visit.

I have been working with a friend on his computer trying to remove all the spyware that has accumulated over the past year or so(he has young teens that are using it for MSN messenging and Kazaa and Limewire and and and...he also does not have an anti-virus on his system anymore(subscription ran out and he did not renew it for whatever reasons)...anyways, we got him an anti-virus program(Norton)and have scanned his system(it found over 1000 at risks)...but while we scanned the system we ran into a major stall over a sent mail folder(ThunderBird email program) that was over 1g in size...can anyone help me to remove the contents of this folder so that the next time we(or he) scan the computer for viruses, etc., the scan won't take so long?

thank you in advance

Open Mozilla Thunderbird
Click on the tab to the left that says Sent

Question: thunderbird email.

I have just changed my Broadband provider to BT and was told by learned people on this forum that my old Lineone dial up email address would work OK.I was with Tiscali after they took over Lineone but although I got a new broadband account I kept the old dial in email which worked fine since 2000.Now I am using BT I cannot seem to get my Lineone emails to send and receive, I had been using windows Live mail in Win7 but after having no luck setting up my Lineone account with it I have downloaded Thunderbird. I still cannot get th emails to work and since I have had an email address with Lineone for 13 years everbody on my contact list knows it and I ma reluctant to use a new BT name even though it is the same as Lineone except for ending in btinternet. How can I set up the Lineone account using Thunderbird via BT.Please help.Thanks,Ruskle.

Question: Thunderbird email

How do I setup Tbird email to accept emails only for those addresses in my Address Book?

Answer:Thunderbird email

Tools - Message Filters... - New -

The match can be:
From - isn't in my address book - Personal Address Book

The actions can be:
Delete Message

However, I would suggest that instead of an immediate delete you move the unwanted messages to the Junk or another special folder.

Question: Thunderbird email

I have several e-mail accounts. 1 account keeps downloading the same emails over and over. These emails were from 10-10-11 to 10-13-11. I do not save copy's on my server. how do I correct this?

Thanks, Robert

Answer:Thunderbird email

How recently have you compacted your folders? Compacting is something that needs to be done regularly in any email program. We recommend weekly, but many of us do it daily. When done often enough, it can be an extremely fast process. Not doing so can lead to problems like those you are experiencing. See this about how to and why it's so important: Compacting folders - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

If you haven't been doing that before, and 'compacting' them now (and leaving a long enough time for the process to complete) doesn't fully resolve the problem then do the following on each account:

Close Thunderbird. Find and delete all of the files with the .msf file extension in your profile folder/Mail Profile folder - Thunderbird - MozillaZine Knowledge Base including your Local Folders, especially if you are using the global inbox. You must have "View hidden files and folders" on Spyware Warrior :: View topic - How to show hidden files and folders and you need to set "hide extensions for known file types" off (just below View Hidden) if you are using Windows. For VIsta, use the XP instructions. These are your mail summary files and do not hold any messages themselves. They will be rebuilt the next time you open each folder in Thunderbird. Compact all your folders when you have completed this. Compacting folders - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

To avoid this happening again, see the tips in these articles:
