Question: Dell's revised XPS 15 includes gorgeous Infinity display, Windows 10

Infinity displays are all the rage among notebook buyers these days. Dell's XPS 13 (2015) was an excellent example of what's possible when it launched earlier this year and now, they're bringing the gorgeous screen to its bigger brother. ...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey,

My last post didn't help to solve my troubles, so I've re-written it for clarity in the hopes that *someone* can help me to make my Apple Studio Display and my laptop/XP get along.

Here goes:

Specs:

Acer Inc. VT8363/5 KT133/KM133
Display adaptor: S3 Graphics Twister K
Driver date: 5/26/2003
Driver version: 6.14.10.12

Chip name: S3-VIA Twister K (387)

I just purchased a used 17" Apple Studio Display CRT to replace my blurry 14" beige monitor. The monitor plugs into my Acer Aspire 1300 laptop, which has a cracked (and mostly unusable) screen.

The Acer works fine with the beige, generic monitor, but freaks out when I plug in the Studio Display.

The Studio Display works okay with my Powerbook, and I bought it from someone who used it with his Dell. I can't figure out what is wrong. It's this one:

http://everymac.com/monitors/a...studio_display_17.html

With the Apple monitor plugged in from boot-up, the Acer logo and some of the initial boot text comes up on the CRT (checking CDROM, etc) , then the CRT goes black and makes a chirping noise with the green monitor light staying on as soon as Windows XP starts to load. The CRT then goes into standby and XP loads up on the laptop's screen.

When I have the monitor plugged in and change the settings under "Display Devices" in the advanced options, I can get something to happen, but only brief... Read more

Answer:Windows XP knocks out Apple Studio Display (revised post)

Good morning seanps, it would appear you have a mismatch with display parameters.
Is that monitor suitable for normal Windows PC's?
I couldn't see any or specs info on it. (quickly)
Your symptom is indicative of an out of range problem which may well kill your monitor if you are not careful.

I would be inclined to consider getting another monitor.

Others might know positively.
Cheers, qldit.

Lenovo just put out a press release and some marketing shots and videos about their new 2nd generation Intel Core-based Edge laptops due for April availability: Lenovo Newsroom The press text and videos mention an "Infinitiy Display." What the hell is that? Can someone translate marketing obfuscation in to what the specs of these displays actually are? Resolution? Color gamut? Viewing angles? Brightness? LCD technology type (TN or IPS)?

I am running a quite new (4 months old) Dell S2718H/HX infinity screen monitor, with a PC using the latest version of Windows 10 (Creators Edition). The PC (Acer Aspire, with Intel HD graphic card and i5 processor) is also quite new, about 1 year old.
Since the W10 update the monitor becomes scrambled and fuzzy intermittently - just thin pink and blue lines and no image - usually when the computer is left idle. Sometimes it can run for days without it happening and sometimes it can take 2 hours.
I have updated the drivers for the card and for the monitor, but this seems to have made no difference. The monitor is connected to the computer with an HDMI cable. If I take it out and put it back in, nothing changes.
But, if I turn the monitor off and back on, the screen goes back to normal.
I would be grateful for any help you can offer.
Stephen

Answer:Dell S2718H/HX Infinity Monitor Becomes Scrambled

Not to throw the blame game, but I would suspect something in the PC rather than the monitor as it worked good until a Windows 10 software upgrade.  Recycling the power on the monitor causes the PC to regenerate the HDMI signal and thus most likely why it seems to fix it.
First suggestion is to go to Intel and run their updater and update the CPU Video drivers.
I'm using the Intel CPU graphics now on my current desktop but I was concerned as I've had a problem in the past (motherboard problem) with the CPU graphics and had to use a separate video card.

Hi all,I ordered the new Dell XPS 15 9550 a little while ago. It's a great machine, but there was an issue with a metallic rattling inside one of the speakers, especially when playing high notes. I got a replacement, the sound is fine, but the screen is different on that one. It's the same type of screen, same manufacturer (LG) but the colours, brightness and white balance are off. It's almost got a very subtle yellowish, muddy tint that is warm. The whites are not white any more and it does not seem as bright. I had them side by side so I could compare and the difference is obvious.I don't think there's anything wrong with the screen - but it does seem odd, and I got a hunch that Dell have made some adjustments to the BIOS or the default colour profile.Has anyone ele experienced this, and is there a fix for this? Thanks!

Hi Folks,
I hope you guys are doing well.
I recently upgraded from Dell Xps 15 L502x to Dell's flagship XPS 15 2016 (9550) Infinity Edge Notebook and I'm happy with it.
So, I used my old XPS with the power cord plugged in even after it reaches 100% or until I see the fully charged notification by disabling my battery charging. By that way I prevented my notebook from overcharging.
Until now my battery's health, was good and I haven't faced any issues with my battery. (touch wood)!
But with my new Notebook I couldn't able to see such thing to disable my battery. I have the habit of working in my laptop with the power chord plugged in. But now It kinda worries me, by doing that so may shorten my new notebook's battery life.
Does the new XPS 15 (9550) notebook comes with an automatic disable function to prevent from overcharging? or Is there a way to disable it?
P.s I had a Dell chat session with their expert, He asked me to remove the power chord once the battery is fully charged.
Thanks
Sibi

Today, I learned that Microsoft has announced a revision to 1 or more of its most recently released updates. I have noticed that previously released patches have been revised.
Revisions
• V1.0 (December 11, 2007): Bulletin published.

• V1.1 (December 12, 2007): Bulletin Revised to address rendering issues.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-069.mspx

1.
Does this mean that subsequent to the update that was made available on 11 Dec 2007, a change to the update has been made?

2.
If so, if one has already downloaded & installed the update, how does one obtain the latest update?

RF123

Answer:Revised Windows updates

I would imagine that if the revision affected those that had already installed the first version that the updated version would show up for installation in Windows Updates, though not necessarily immediately.

I did a little revision of an old thread I posted two months ago. Here it is revised, I've added a lot more detail. If no one can help me here, do you know where I can get help for free? I shouldn't have to pay anything simply to access my own files, that I have every right to look at. I once was in touch with some free Microsoft support (from Microsoft) via email, for updating windows XP errors I was getting unfortunately I can't remember when I went to. Well, here it is:

I am getting an error when I try to access certain files on a drive, in windows 7: Professional

The situation is this. I have two computers. One is a Dell Studio 1555 Desktop with Windows XP Professional, and my second computer is a Windows 7 Desktop, I bought the desktop through a company called Cyberpower PC, that was custom build for me. On my Windows XP computer. I decided I needed to wipe the hard drive clean- to get rid of some malware. However, before doing so, as not to lose any data- I made a copy of the entire hard drive as an OMG image file on an external USB hard drive with a program called Laplink Disk Image. What I am trying to do is access certain files on the image, by connecting the hard drive to my Windows 7 Computer, mounting the OMG image and accessing it.

Specifically, in this case, the directory is: mounted hard drive letter (this varies, but it is the mounted image) /Documents and Settings/Sean. I get the following error: (which I do NOT get when trying to access the director... Read more

Im running windows 7 ultimate and when I try to install some programs i get the following error(I assume because it is using the default windows installer software?). I cannot install some windows updates and programs because of this issue.

"The Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

I have tried doing different methods on the internet such as registering and unregistering using cmd which does not work giving an error. I have tried downloading the windows installer software but from what I can see the windows installer 5.0 is the correct version for windows 7 yet I can not find any where to download this including microsoft's site. I tried installing 4.5 and 3.0 (thought it was worth a try), but it says incorrect os. Also don't know whether this is an issue to do with my corrupted windows installer or a security feature employed in windows 7 to prevent people uneducatedly deleting required files. But there is not installer folder in windows on the c disk and i have hidden folders off. The only way I can access the folder is via typing it's address into run.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am entirely unable to connect to BT Infinity from Windows XP Professional. They worked together since BT Infinity came out and I'm not sure when they stopped communicating as I almost exclusively use Linux Operating systems (my favourite currently being Mint 17.1 with which I have absolutely no problems) but I need Windows for updating my SatNav.
To be frank, getting into Windows is a bit of a palaver as well with three out of four attempts failing to even open it.
Windows is on a separate hard drive if that is of any consequence and Linux connects to BT Infinity flawlessly so I don't think Infinity is the problem.
Any assistance you could give to help overcome this problem would be most welcome but please use terms which a layman who's a bit long in the tooth can understand!
Thank you in anticipation of your attention.

[Windows 7 Ultimate; Intel Quadcore 6600 2.4 GHz; Asus P5E Mainboard, 4GB RAM—via cable to BT Infinity router.]
Hello.

I have BT's Infinity Broadband, but something odd is happening with it—and BT say Windows 7 itself is the problem.

By way of comparison I have my little Samsung N210 Netbook (Windows 7 Starter edition) running directly beside (see the above specs) my desktop machine. The Netbook is connected wirelessly.

I use Advanced System Care Pro, BT Infinity Desktop Help, and CCleaner to keep both machines (otherwise) singing.

So. How come my little Netbook averages 25.4 Mb download speed—while my super-duper desktop averages only 4.79? Those being regularly indicative figures, that's an 81% difference.

Thinking I might have a defective cable, I tested the Netbook on it—and got 40Mb!

I've obviously got some settings seriously wrong somewhere, but I haven't got a clue what these might be.

Immessely frustrated.

Any insights?

I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

Regards,
Rohit Kumar

Answer:Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension;  in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad.  It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

Mozilla is always looking at ways it can improve Firefox and has not shied away from experimentation. However, with the new rapid release cycle, we may start seeing the results of these experiments a lot sooner than before.

One example is a proposed UI revamp, which is only in mockup form now, but which already looks promising.

The aim of the revamp seems to be simplifying the few remaining UI elements, the tab bar in particular.

Some of the notable changes include the removal of the dedicated search bar and the rounded tab corners, similar in a way to Chrome.

In fact, there are a lot of elements that look similar to Chrome's, but it's not really a rip-off, the proposed Firefox UI has a lot of details and elements that put it ahead of Chrome in terms of functionality and especially looks (although the latter isn't saying much, Chrome has never been much of a looker).Click to expand...

Hello,

Today I was trying to do a hackintosh on another computer and was using my laptop to flash the usb for the hackintosh. One time usb stopped working, so I tried to delete an upper and a lower filter from regedit. Since that I couldn't boot up windows. I have tried to restore it using another same edition, same architecture Windows 10 edition from another computer (viewing which values I have missed) from recovery console but nothing. The computer starts, shows the boot logo for about 15-20 seconds, then reboot and run troubleshooter, troubleshooter doesn't find nothing and ask me to restart the computer. And the proccess repeats infinitely.

Is there a way to fix this Windows without formatting?
PD: It's an x64 Windows 10 Pro machine

Thanks

Answer:Windows 10 Infinity reboot loop

Assuming:
1. Whatever you've done or tried to do (that's so non-specific I've no idea what it is) hasn't made it impossible to recover Windows
2. The ONLY problem is that you've hacked the registry and thus somehow stopped your PC booting
(and these are big assumptions)
then
Assuming you had turned system restore on and you have any useful system restore points
then
the first thing I'd try would be System Restore
- which you can start by booting your PC from a Windows install disk, click 'Repair your computer' and navigate through the prompts to Troubleshooting and a System Restore prompt.

Failing that you could try restoring the backup copy of the registry (you would need instructions- more technical)- no guarantees.

You mention a troubleshooter- which would that be?

Note: we constantly and strongly urge people to use disk imaging routinely - e.g. Macrium Reflect (free).
If you had disk images, you could restore Windows from one without technical help.

Win 10 doesn't have a Recover Console as such- I assume you mean the Advanced Startup and Troubleshooting Options as here:
Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10 Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

This foot pedal was perfectly until about two weeks ago. I am a transcriptionist and so need this to stop and start audio while i type it.

I am running windows 10 on a Toshiba Tecra A8 laptop. I have just upgraded to the Creator version but it was doing the same thing on the previous version.

When I put my foot on the foot pedal I get the windows disconnect sound and then the connect sound and the play button does not work.

I also get HIDwatch 1167 error when I try to use another transcription software. Are the two related??

I am at my wits end. Can anyone help please?

Answer:USB Infinity pedal not connecting - Windows connect, disconnect sound

What is the make and model of the foot pedal?
Hold down the Windows Key + X and choose Device Manager. Do you have any Yellow Flags next to any USB Devices? If so, right click it and Uninstall it, then remove the USB cable from the computer and restart the computer. When you come back up, plug the cable into a different USB port.
You can also go to the foot pedal manufacturers support/download drivers site and look for an updated driver.

does this mean If I get another hard drive I can somehow get the XP Pro OS for free? If so what is the process?
thanks

Answer:Includes Windows XP Professional OEM/COA

You would need to find a copy of an XP Pro OEM CD to use with the Product Key on the COA sticker. The original PC manufacturer (if a major brand) may provide new disks for free or for a nominal fee. Or a computer shop should be able to burn a copy for you for not much more than the cost of the CD.

I recently purchased a Dell and the only way the hardware options I wanted would come is if the OS was Windows 7 Pro with an included Windows 10 Pro License.  So I received the computer and I would like to upgrade it from the start.  However, I can't seem to find instructions on how to do this.
I have looked at the How to Set Up your new Dell Computer on the Knowledgebase, but it does not mention my situation.
I have looked at the Windows 10 Upgrade Walkthrough on the Knowledgebase. But it does not mention my situation.
I have tried the WIndows 10 Downgrade System on the Knowledgebase, but again it does not mention my situation.

The computer came with a purple CD that sys to ensure that the BIOS setting is set to UEFI mode prior to installing Windows 10.  But if I adjust this setting and run the CD there is no mention about upgrading to Windows 10 in the options available.
The Windows 10 Upgrade walkthrough talks about updating the Windows 7 install with Service Pack 1, but none of the info that came with the PC shows an upgrade code which I would probably need since the Microsoft free upgrade time period has expired.
So how to I upgrade this new computer to windows 10?  Just wondering what info I am missing.  I assumed this would be simple.  I shouldn't have to reinstall all my preinstalled software and drivers on a brand new computer on day one.
Thanks,

Second day in a row that Microsoft is talking about Windows 8. This time it has detailed the new features and improvements that will be introduced in Windows 8 Explorer.
We knew that using a ribbon for Explorer would likely be met with skepticism by a set of power-users (like me), but there are clear benefits in ways that the ribbon:
?Exposes hidden features that they already use but which require third party add-ons to use in the Explorer UI today.
?Provides keyboard shortcuts for every command in the ribbon, something many people have been asking for.
?Provides UI customization with the quick access toolbar, taking us back to a customization level that is basically equivalent to Windows XP.

I know the inability to remove old Windows Updates in W7 & W8 is something that many have been frustrated by for a long time.
In the latest batch of Windows Updates there was a Recommended Update that has introduced such a. See KB2852386
I'v got this in W7x64 & W7x32. I assume it is also in W8.
I'd recommend doing a system image (or at least a restore point) before running this. BTW, follow the instructions in the KB article to run it.
Enjoy.

Answer:Windows 7 (and 8?) now includes ability to delete old Windows Updates

Wasn't sure if there might be a separate update that did the same for W8.

MSDN says that Windows 8 introduces a new /full switch on shutdown.exe, which performs a full shutdown of Windows 8 computer.

You can use the new /full switch on shutdown.exe. From a cmd prompt, run: shutdown /s /full / t 0 to invoke an immediate full shutdown

But if you use it (or even the corrected shutdown /s /full /t 0 - after removing the space before t) it does not work.
Now if you type shutdown /? in an elevated command prompt, you don't see /full as an available switch... you see only the following switches or parameters for shutdown.exe:

That post was from over a year ago. Maybe they pulled the functionality from the command?
One way to check is if you still have a running VM or machine running the developer preview. I know a lot of stuff has changed since then (some stuff added, other stuff removed).
I don't think I have a machine still running the DP to check. I don't even think I kept the install media for it, either...

Windows 10 Build 9926 is a big leap forward. It comes with new apps and features, most notably Cortana, Continuum, and an overhauled Start menu, Action Center, and Settings app. As Microsoft?s Joe Belfiore said, it?s an early build, which means we have a number of known bugs in this build, but fixes are imminent.

The consumer preview was rolled out on Friday, both to the fast and slow ring of Windows Insiders. Before you upgrade, make sure all updates were installed and you have around 4 GB of free space. If you?re installing from scratch, you can get the Windows 10 ISO here. Note that you?re opting in to a new Privacy Statement for the Windows Insider Program when you upgrade to or install the new build.

Cortana is Here
Everybody is talking about Cortana these days; or should I say talking with her? Having made her debut on Windows Phone 8.1 last year, Cortana is now being introduced to a wider audience via the Windows 10 desktop. You can tell it?s not her home turf. For most questions she refers to Bing and to some tasks, like creating a calendar entry, she responds that she can?t do this right now and that you should check back again after future updates. It?s an early build after all.

Stay tuned for an in-depth article on Cortana from someone who knows her well from Windows Phone.

New Start Menu
The massive changes here were somewhat unexpected; some are welcome, others not so much.

The Start menu can no longer be resized, but you can now maximize it ... Read more

I've recently "inherited" a laptop from my father, who on a whim decided that the 17" screen (which was essential in the previous purchase) was now too big and he needed something compact to travel. Only problem is that he is dedicated to the cause of causing computer problems, and now I've got this Genuine Error popping up. I purchased the computer (online) for him with Windows, and it has a Windows sticker on the bottom - it is a genuine copy.

There are no recovery disks of any kind (who knows where they have been lost to) available.

I have my system setup to where I try not to store anything on the C drive. My E drive, which is another separate drive, is where I keep all of my user data and I have a few non-system related programs installed (some portable, some via an installer) over there. I have my iTunes folder configured to store on the E drive as well. I also configured Windows to store my Favorites folder there. The idea was to not have any data I care about on the C drive unless I couldn't put it on the E drive. The problem I'm running into is that Windows Backup (WBU) wants to backup my C drive *and* my E drive. And it doesn't give you a choice to not back it up. But, I don't want it to back up the E drive because I have another mechanism for backing that up (I don't image it because it is very large and I have specific folders identified with precious data that I backup using other means). I like to use WBU to make the system image of the C drive because it is convenient to use in a restoration because it is integrated with Windows Restore. So, yes, I know I could just NOT use Windows Backup, I've read numerous posts in here about people hating on WBU, but I really want to keep using it. So, on my E drive there is a "Program Files" folder and a "Program Files (x86)" folder that I manually created. And as I alluded to earlier, there is a Favorites folder that has the actual Windows icon (so I believe the system truly knows it is there). What I could use some help w... Read more

I just bought a new Precision desktop.  In the description, it said that it came with Windows 7 but includes a Windows 10 pro license.  I'm not sure what that means. The computer is currently on Windows 7.  There is a disk included for Windows 10 but the disk is sealed and says it's already installed on my computer.  There are no instructions for what I'm supposed to do and I don't want to load this disk if there is something as simple as clicking a button somewhere to start the install.

Dear Dell Forum,Recently, I have upgraded from my windows 8.1 to windows 10. After I upgraded, I found blurred displays issue. I have done the following things to resolve my issue.
1. Updated all the latest drivers.2. Changed screen resolution to and fro3. Updated AMD Radeon HD 7700M series and Intel® HD Graphics 4000
For web browsers and File Explorers, I can see very clear display without any issue. But for installed software’s (for example Skype and some other installed applications), I have the blurred display problems. If I open “Device Manager”, I have the same issue. If I try to install any software, the pop-up box also blurry display.I think because of this issue, system start up takes longer time.I am researching this issue since more than a month. Please, can someone help me how to resolve this issue?
thanks in advance..!

It looks like Microsoft is delivering its promised more regular Windows builds. The company just pushed out a new build to Fast Track users of the Windows 10 Technical Preview: build number 10061.

Highlights of the new build are new Mail and Calendar apps, based on the same Universal Apps as the Windows 10 for phones apps released a couple of weeks ago, and more configurability of the operating system's appearance, including a new dark theme. The Continuum experience, used in tablet and hybrid devices, should also be improved.

Full Article

Here is whats new in this build

New Mail and Calendar apps: These new apps bring improved performance and a familiar three-pane email UI, with a toggle to quickly move between your email and calendar. Mail includes customizable Swipe Gestures, letting you swipe right or left to take actions like delete, flag, move or mark as read/unread. Also check out the new email authoring experience. Mail leverages the familiar and rich capability of Word to that allows you to easily insert tables, add pictures and use bullets and color to your text. Both the new Mail and Calendar apps support Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, IMAP, POP and other popular accounts.

Start, Taskbar, and Action Center improvements: This build introduces the new black system theme across the Start menu, Taskbar, and Action Center. The Start menu and Taskbar now have transparency and you can also resize the Start menu. Weve also enabled support for AutoColor... Read more

Then immunize worked. I closed it. Nothing was open during the scan just to let you know. Also when I left it idled there was nothing open. I left it alone for a few minutes with the notebook open not closed. I decided to close it and genlty place it on the couch, at least thats what I remeber doing. The notebook was still on, not on stanby or anything just closed.

My brother opened it and he said it was black screen. We pressed some keys to see if it would reappear normally but nothing worked, ctrl+alt+dlt, enter, esc, stuff like that, but nothing worked; just a black screen. We dcided to restart the computer manually by holding down the start switch. It seemed to have worked. We saw the dell screen then went to the windows screen loading. I have a dell 250N smartsep laptop. The monitor has gone extremely dim. Not completely dark, but very dim, almost like trying to look through a heavily tinted window. The computer works as normal otherwise.

I intend to hook up to an external monitor to determine if it's a monitor or graphics card problem.

Assuming it's the monitor, is there a way to determine if the problem is with the lcd display itself, or the backlight? And if it is that is there usually something that can be done without changing the entire monitor?

All suggestions are welcome, my warranty is up so I'm fully prepared to take apart the monitor myself.

Thanks

Hi all,
I am running RHEL4 as Guest OS in Dell studio 1555 laptop using VMWare Work Station with Windows XP SP3 as host OS in my Dell Studio 1555 model. But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Hardware:
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Settings:
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

Thanks,
-pkd

The culprit seems to be the hardware acceleration enabled in the Intel HD driver. But, I have yet to find a way to disable it universally across the Windows 10 operating system.
For Office software =* Start any Office program* On the File tab, click Options* In the Options dialog box, click Advanced* In the list of available options, add a check to, "Disable hardware graphics acceleration"* Click OK
For all other software, you will need to check into their specific settings.

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... Answer:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

Microsoft surprised testers of Windows 10 on Tuesday by launching build 10159 of its forthcoming operating system, just a day after the last update.

Gabe Aul, an engineering general manager at Microsoft who serves as the public face of the Windows Insider Program, announced in a blog post that the company released the new build to testers in the program?s Fast ring.

Unlike yesterday?s build 10158, the latest build doesn?t bring that many new features. Instead, wrote Aul, it?s packed with more than 300 bug fixes, along with a mysterious ?very interesting change.?

According to a report by Neowin, the change in question is a redesign of the login screen that puts a user?s photo front and center in a translucent pane over their desktop picture. It?s a marked difference from the previous iteration of the login screen, which placed a user?s photo to one side of their name, Microsoft account email and password field.

I want to switch between 2 laptops onto a DELL E178FPc Monitor (which is VGA input only).  The Laptops are a DELL E6410 -VGA out only, running Win7    and  a DELL Inspiron 5000 series machine -HDMI output, running Win10.
I have tried to achieve this using a KVM switch (the ATEN CS22U, non-powered). It claims to be Win7 compliant.
When I connect it to the E6410's VGA port and then in to the Monitor it says 'no signal detected'. Subsequent research would suggest that even if I were to somehow get a display through the KVM switch it will be lost as soon as you switch to the other laptop (!).
I have come to believe through research on the web that the E6410 Laptop will only work with a VGA monitor being directly connected to its port, or an alternative (powered) KVM Switch with so called Active-DDC (whatever that is!) may also work.
Needless to say I have exhausted my tech knowledge on this one.
Can anyone offer further advice or recommend a solution?
Ed.

Hi guys,
My display has been working fine so far, suddenly from today my internal display doesn't work. I've restarted many times, downloaded all the latest DELL updates for the DELL XPS 13 laptop, it doesn't seem to do the trick. I do see the DELL splash screen before it just goes dark and nothing can be seen. With an external monitor I get to see everything I would expect to see, i.e. login to Windows as usual. Once I remove the external USB-C cable, used for the display, I'm plunged back into darkness. If I restart in safe mode (Network), the internal display works again, so it can't be a hardware issue. There is something wrong with the drivers, maybe caused through a Windows Update, I don't know. Help would be appreciated, I need to be able to work without the external monitor.

So I've had two of this model give me the same issues. When booting the display shows the Dell logo and the Windows logo and then goes black. You can hear the Windows chimes but there is no display.
If the lid is closed and the computer goes to sleep then is reopened the log on screen is shown.
We have tried re-image and reinstalling all drivers in the proper order.
Updating BIOS and making sure that the video settings are correct.
No matter what we do every time the computer is booted the logon screen is black.

Should I factory reset the monitor? No
6300 has some strange quirks (eg @ and " reversed, icons too small etc)
what operating system?
its probably set to english US and you need to go into control panel Regional languages and change everything to English UK.
small icons can be increased either by changing the display resolution or by selecting large icons (both under display properties)
how are you connectig to the monitor hdmi cable ? vga cable? again changing refresh rate or resolution in display properties may help.

Hello Everyone,
I have Dell N5110 which had recently Display DIM issue.  I have contacted the local repair store, they've diagnosed and said it had issue display IO controller and needs to be changed.
They've replaced it and display was working fine for few weeks. After few weeks, I had my battery changed as it's health was in bizarre state after running diagnostic test and it prompted for replacing the battery.
I have new battery installed and the display started flickering. The battery is original one as I have purchased it from dell store. I want some one to help me out in fixing this issue.
I have installed Windows 10 recently, could that be a problem. If nothing can be fixed by troubleshooting, please help me out with nearest authorized service center so-that I can have the laptop checked once.
Thanks & Regards,
Rohit.P

Answer:Dell N5110 Display Flickers and DIM display

Attach an external monitor.  Does it display a good image, or also flicker.
You might also want to ask the shop that did the repair what a "digitial I/O controller" is -- it sounds like they simply dismissed you with a techno-babble term.

I'm not sure if I posted this in the right place so you will probly see this in to places
allow me to revise my problem: I have an nforce-2 board made by jetway with a radeon 9700 350w ps and ddr333 mem.
the prob I was having was i coudn't run on 333 front side bus with the memmory set to 333 as well;it would crash to desktop or freeze when i played a game. now before the amd 2600 I had a 2200 (133fsb) and memory set to 333 fsb and it worked great.
but not with new 2600. I have sense took out the ddr 333 memory and put in ddr400 512 stick; same problem;will only run on 266 memory settings. i'm stumped! and i'm no amateur.
could it be 350 w power suply? or the n-force-2 board? i tried setting the memory setting lower to no avail. Oh, one last thing,
I can set the 2600 to 2000+(133fsb) and the memory can run fine at ddr400 mode. Pleaaaaase help. thanks

Answer:can't run on 333fsb revised

You may want to check if the CPU is supported by the mobo. Check the Jetway site for your specific mobo for FAQ's and BIOS updates.

It could be a heat ot power issue also. What are the CPU's temps at both speeds? You can check in the BIOS or through tteh use of a program like MainBoard Monitor which you can download by seacrhing on google. What make is the powersupply?

Hey,

Well, I canceled the order for my previous new build and changed a few components. This morning I ordered the following revised system. I changed the graphics card from NVIDIA 7300 Go to ATI x1400, I added a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and I switched from Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate. What do you guys think of the changes?

Thanks,
James

Currently I am having the dell xps 13 laptop, confiq:
Intel Core i5 2.20 GHz4 GB Memory 128 GB SSDIntel HD Graphics 55001920 x 1080Windows 8.1

What is the best way to connect this laptop to the the 4k dell display U2718Q?
My main usages are for 4k video playback and some video editing on the external monitor. Thanks.

Answer:Connecting my dell xps 13 to a 4k dell display U2718Q

If you want to run at 4K resolution and the typical 60 Hz refresh rate, you only have a few options:
- USB-C to DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 adapter. If you go with the latter, make sure the adapter specifically mentions HDMI 2.0, as not all USB-C adapters support that.  Also, adapters that include display outputs AND other features like Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 ports, etc will specifically NOT work.  To run 4K @ 60 Hz over regular USB-C, the entire port has to be dedicated to pushing display traffic.  If the adapter you connect wants to send USB-type traffic as well, your available display bandwidth gets cut in half, so you'd only be able to run 4K @ 30 Hz or 1440p @ 60 Hz, for example.
- Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter.  Each of the DisplayPort outputs will have enough bandwidth for 4K @ 60 Hz, and yes you can even use two such displays simultaneously if you wanted.
- A TB16 dock, with the display connected to the dock via either Mini DisplayPort, DisplayPort, or HDMI. The dock can support up to dual displays up to 4K @ 60 Hz and even some triple-display configurations as long as their total bandwidth requirements aren't too high. The other benefit to the dock of course is that you can connect a bunch of other peripherals to the dock and still have only a single cable that connects to your PC, and the dock would even be able to charge the laptop via that one cable, so you wouldn't even need to connect the regular AC adapter.  But a... I see that many people have problems with windows updates.
I have NEVER had problems until now.

I run Windows 98 and have had problems with my IE browser
over the last 2 weeks (tried to "repair" it, uninstalled
and reinstalled, etc.) so have also downloaded Netscape. I
only go to windows update site with Explorer though. I exit
out of Zone Alarm and Web Washer (although I never needed
to in the past), my security is set on medium and I can't
figure out what else to do.

PROBLEM: It stays stuck on "Checking for the latest version
of the windows update software..." for a good 5-10 minutes
if I let it stay there that long. I also refresh the page
but that doesn't matter.

Answer:INFINITY "checking for windows update"

Try emptying your IE cache. Tools --> Internet options --> Delete files... --> Delete all offline content. That will force it to delete the version of Windows Update that it has and download the newest version.

I need help I dont know how to fix this problem I am having with my cpu

I am running a Dell 4550 with Windows XP. My ISP is Roadrunner.

Everything is running slowly or sluggish, My Browser freezes ( Internet Explorer ) Even with pop-up blocker set at high and seeing very few pop-ups IE has been opening and dozens of tabs open one after another. This just started within the last couple weeks. Shut internet connection off and end task now to get IE to close.

I also get a pop up that says Warning your computer contains various signs of virus and malicious programs presence. and then some ridiculous pop ups happen , and I constantly get virus and spyware removal pop ups.

I appreciate any help or advice.

Thank You

Answer:Virus/Malware?? I need help please revised

Hello, swaguy34
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

It seems that someone has access to my email password. At first I thought there was only a site error, so I tried logging into my blog. The same thing happened.

I recovered the password of my email and then did the same for my blog. The hacker didn't really tamper with my email or anything...he/she did empty my blog's inbox, which though a pain, isn't all that extreme.

Around half an hour later though, my email's password was changed again. I then changed my passwords again, but using a different computer this time. The hacking has stopped so I believe that it's only my laptop that's affected...

Please help! I really need my laptop back ASAP for school! BTW, I don't have an installation disk or a boot disk for my infected computer. Ah, and if possible, can I know how my laptop was hacked?

Answer:Hacking Problem (revised)

Hello sorakusanagi,

If you still require assistance, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review: Close any open programs
Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
Click View scan report at the bottom.
Click the Save Report As... button.
Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

Ok Guys after reading through lots of reviews and also taking into consideration a lot of your valuable comments I've come up with the following spec that I am thinking of going for. Please let me know if this is OK.

Intel Core I5-750 (I thought about the I7 860 but on the price scale this is as far as i can push)

MSI P55 GD 65
1 TB Seagate SATA
2*2GB Kingston DDR3
Samsung P2350 24" Monitor
Samsung SATA 22x DVD RW
Logitech KB+Mouse
Powercolor ATI RAdeon HD 5850
Coolermaster cabinet
Cooler master 650W PSU (I thought about the corsair but its too expensive in this part of the world. Costs as much as a Gigabyte UD2 motherboard!!)

Okay considering the coolermaster extreme power plus low efficiency I amgoing with the corsair
Coolermaster Hyper 212+

Answer:Revised System configuration

everything looks great but you wouldn't be able to go cross-fire with that PSU

[size=12]If you have a computer problem, the first place to search is the FAQ Database, the last section on the board. Some questions get asked weekly or more often, and it is smarter to check there rather than expect someone to reinvent the wheel and type it ALL out again. If the suggestions don't work, or you have other questions, then certainly post away (but not in that area)! Here is the link:http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=17There also some GREAT links for help on the home page! If you still need help with a computer problem, you would be better off following some simple guidelines for forum posting:  *List as much of your computer specifications as possible. This includes operating system, service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc. *Post in the appropriate forum. Do not start a thread in "Programming" if you need help with a specific program. That would go in "Software". If you post in the DOS forum please specify if it is "real DOS" and what version or some sort of Command Prompt from with WIndows, and what version of Windows. There are differences some subtle, and some very important. These tips ensure that the people most likely to help will see your posts.*Don't "hijack" someone else's thread. Though you problem may sound similar it is... Read more

NTLDR is compressed
This has probabally been posted before, but I can't find the thread, and this problem is really pissing me off. It's kind of urgent. I cleaned out a few files in my admin folder (what appeared to be extra users other than myself). I am the only user (admin), username James Zagar, computer name Ephraim. I deleted something like Ephraim.000.user, and restarted my computer. Well it booted but then started telling me that I had insfficient privelege to install, and modify folders. I attempted to recover my gateway computer with the provided recover disk, and it stoped mid recover and told me it could not load a bunch of stuff. I restarted, and it prompted me to press F11 for recover, and then immediatly told me that "NTLDR is compressed, press ctrl+alt+del to restart". I can now fully recover but the os will not boot. I have no floppy drive, only universal card/usb reader, and a hard disk drive. This was kind of a long explanation (sorry), but I need help urgently.

I have considered re-installing ME but CD-ROM supplied by Dell requires start-up configuration to be changed to boot from CD-Rom (drive E) not drive A. Book says to contact Dell Tech. Support toll free for instructions (a joke).

Question 1: Is there an easy way to fix scandsk.exe without re-installin ME?
Question 2: How do I access the menu at startup which allows drive configuration changes?

I have Ad-Aware software in this computer. Could this have damaged this file? I checked the Archives and didn't see any indication.

Answer:ScanDisk in Win. ME not working (revised)

Drop down to safe mode and scan from there.
If you need to know how:
Restart your computer wait until you see the text "Starting Windowsme and then press F8.

Once at the Windows 98or as in your case winme Startup Menu select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

I am getting the following error message:

0x00000000 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not read. Click on OK to terminate the program.

Also, I keep getting re-directed to add websites while on Firefox. Gotta add that I have had some malware issues lately, including the one that mimics the Windows XP Security Center. Any ideas on how to fix will be most appreciated.

This was my initial post. I have since reinstalled Mozilla and immediately got a re-direct to an ad sight. Here is my HJT Log.

Hi

I have installed on my Windows XP SP3 machine, McAfee SecurityCenter Version 8.1.175, VirusScan Version 12.1.111, PersonFirewall Version 9.1.108. All of which should be up to date and protecting my system. Doesn't seem to be doing me a lot of good though with this W32/Autorun.worm.gen virus. Put simply, McAfee software seems to find and "delete" part of this worm when it installs itself, as a user logs into windows. McAfee doesn't however, seem to delete the source or even the virus itself and the McAfee virus scan tells me my system is clean of malware when I do a full system scan. From what I have read this virus loads itself into any drive that auto loads to a system and it's doing exactly that. I'm finding hidden "System.ex"e files are being loaded on to my flask drives, of which a windows user or McAfee can't delete, so I load the infected flask drive to my mac and delete the virus there. It's apparent to me that this virus has been patched to evade detection and deletion by McAfee and likely other virus software. At this point I would like any advice that would help me location or resolve the source of this problem.

All input is appreciated,

Also, this is a revised post from my original W32/Autorun.worm.gen post, an admin can delete the original W32/Autorun.worm.gen post if they like.

Thanks to the help received here, I have adopted some of the ideas recommended and am ready to publish a revised site on the domain. In the past I have always used a site name which was the same as the "Profile" name in the "Publish settings" dialogue. It has dawned on me that the "Profile Name" relates to the domain and not the source file?Another way, the source or site file (.nod) could be called "Mickey" as long as its contents and publishing destination are set up correctly. Am I correct, or on the brink of doing something really silly?

Answer:NOF and publishing a revised site - ......

Yep, you're correct. This is where test servers (fully-featured freespace in my case) come in handy. Failing that, you can publish to a sub-folder that you have created, but perhaps we shouldn't get into sub-folders, based on past experience! ;-)Suffice to say you can publish a NOF site absolutely anywhere and to any sub-folder and it will function normally: NOF's dynamic publishing does the hard work.

Anyone have an idea when to expect a T450p or a T460s (unveiled at CES in Jan?), or at least a Skylake update to the 450s?   I need to buy a new laptop soon and I would like to stick with the Lenovo slim line (if just for the trackpoint and keyboard), but the Surface Book and Dell XPS 15 are looking mighty attractive.  If I'm going to give up on a discrete GPU, I want to at least have the latest processor...

It seems that Lenovo has update the fan by placing a foam block on top. This props the keyboard up slightly higher than it would normally sit. Don't know if this is to address some cooling or structural issue. But the fact that the upper left of the keyboard is propped has introduced a bench of flex to the left side of the keyboard, especially the lower left. It's annoying having a loud sound clunk everytime I push the Shift button. The keyboard is visibly flexing. Could someone please advise if there's a solution to this or whether the foam block can be removed (it wasn't there in the old one and it cooled fine).

I have an HP HDX 16 premium notebook (64 bit), which I purchased in August '09.
It came with Vista but upgraded as soon as possible to Windows 7 Ultimate (free upgrade was part of the purchase deal). I think it is OEM. I had a problem in May of 2010 with the system not accepting windows updates, and was directed to do a complete reinstall (ie starting with the vista then the upgrade) so I assume this is not the full retail version. Other than this I have not had any serious problems till now.

However, in the last few days I have gotten 3 blue screens for no apparent reason.

I have attached the required information. In addition, here is what I have done to troubleshoot:

1. I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic from Administrative Tools and it indicated the memory had no problems.
2. I ran 2 virus scans (Malware Bytes and Kaspersky Anti-Virus Tool) and no viruses were identified.

Recent new hardware:
? a logictech m310 mouse (3 weeks ago & driver appears fine)
? a new power cord (purchased on ebay 3 weeks ago, but with the exact same model number as the original)
? an old line conditioner - connected 1 or 2 days before first bsod (hasn?t been used in several years but appears to be functioning fine - but timing here correlates with bsod's). Today I disconnected it.

Could any of these be causing the problem?

I am hoping someone can put all this information together to help me identify the probable cause of the blue screens.

Answer:3 BSOD's in 4 days - all different (revised w/ attachments)

Hi, chayden; welcome to the forum. I looked at you three most recent dumps. Each has a different error code and each indicates memory corruption. Thus you will have to troubleshoot by a process of elimination.

To begin this process, I recommend that you uninstall Kaspersky using this removal tool: Tool. Kaspersky is a known cause of BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. ONce your system is stable, you can try Kaspersky again; but I do not recommend doing so. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials while you are troubleshooting and make sure Windows Firewall is turned on.

You have three outdated drivers loaded on your system. Two of them are quite obsolete. Outdated drivers can and do cause conflicts, memory corruption and BSOD's. Update or rename these drivers.

enecir.sys Thu Sep 04 05:47:58 2008 - ENE Consumer IR Driver for eHome. OEM - none at http://www.ene.com.tw/en/index.asp. You can try to update this driver through the HP website. If there is no update availalbe, rename the driver. See note below.

HpqKbFiltr.sys Wed Apr 29 09:48:30 2009 - HP Quick Launch Buttons HpqKbFiltr Keyboard Filter driver. http://www.hp.com/#Support. Update ths driver.

MRESP50a64.SYS Sat Nov 19 03:14:28 2005 - NDIS Protocol kernel driver. I was unable to find manufacturer of this driver. Motive? It is way obsolete and is an XP driver. I suggest that you rename this driver and see what it breaks.

I have been gone for a long time, and plenty of things have drastically changed in the computing world during that time. I just wanted to ask a couple questions to better understand the Malware Removal process.
I noticed that Lavasoft's Ad-Aware was removed (QUITE some time ago) from the README process for Malware Removal. What prompted this change?
Safe Mode is no longer used for any of the generic Malware Removal process (except for using CCleaner on the Administrator account). Why is that?

Thanks!

There are better tools to use than Ad-Aware.

Safe mode is used quite often for various reasons ( when a user can not use normal mode or something is blocking a fix in normal mode, etc.)

Previously issued on May 20 at 11:34 now revised
I have an old Mesh pc running Windows XP (service pack 2)and newer pc with Vista. Using a 2-port Ps"/2 KVM switch I linked the two pc's to one monitor. The monitor is a HPw2408h
This arrangement worked well for a couple of years. I then decided to update all drivers on the new pc and monitor resulting in not being able to switch between the two pc's. Since then in stand alone mode I have connected the old pc to a Dell monitor (2 different Dell monitors actually) but the monitor either does not respond or goes into sleep mode.
The question being is the problem with the old pc and nothing to do with the driver updates or can the problem be linked to the updates? Also is there a way of checking the old pc?
If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated

Answer:PC / Monitor problem (revised issue)

Firstly: If the Monitor was getting no signal, it would notify you.
Secondly: If you are able to update the Drivers on the new PC, Why are you running the old one on SP2 ~ it should be SP3 for Security sake if nothing else.
Thirdly: Are you connecting to the old PC directly or via the KVM Switch?

Answer:MS revised the Vista license terms

Good. Now the anti-MS crowd can relax and unroll their underoos from their arsecracks. It still amazes me that such a debate was needed, with all the flaming and name calling, over a topic that was still subject to change. Did anyone really think MS would screw the hardware enthusiasts?

I have an 80 mg hard drive which I have formatted and created a partition. I downloaded drive Image XML and backed up my C: drive. I attempted to transfer drive to drive. I get an error stateing that the f drive (NEW) could not be locked. so I attempted to restore the backup to the F drive which dumped the f drive all together. I went back and reformat and created a new partition. I would like to make the F drive my primary drive or replace to C: due to the drive begining to fail. i.e.noisy. and hanging up. how do i achive this.
