Outook Express - log file problem

Question: Outook Express - log file problem

I've been having problems with Outlook Express crashing and/or having problems that keep giving me an error message about the log file being too big or something. I keep my sent file folder and deleted file folder relatively empty. My inbox has less than 20 items in it, none of them huge. Can anyone tell me how and where I can fix this? If there is no fix, if I download a new copy of Outlook Express over the old one, will my address book reamin in tact? Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Outook Express - log file problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Outook Express - log file problem

Try some maintenance first and see if this helps to clear it up.
Close all programs except Outlook Express, including any antivirus programs you may have running.

First in OE, Tools>Options>Maintenance, uncheck the option for: Compact messages in the background and leave it unchecked from now on.

File>Folder>Compact all Folders. Leave the computer alone until it has completed compacting.

Let us know if this resolves the problem or not.

if you go to tool/options in outlook, click on the tab "other" there you will find a tick box which allows you to enable or disable the "empty deleted items" message.if you want to set the send/receive to automatic then in the same options page click on the tab "mail setup". once again there is a check box which allows this action to take place when outlook is opened.harpur

I am building up a new computer and I want to be able to transfer my Favorites, my Address Book entires, and a number of EMails that I have in my current computer to my new computer.

I am using IE 6.0 and OE 6.0.

I know I can save my emails on a Zip Disc or a CD as .eml files and view them that way but I want to actually transfer them from my current computer to my new computer.

Can someone let me know what I need to to in order to transfer my Favorites, my Address Book entires, and my EMails? I need pretty complete guidance such as where to find the items on my current computer and where to put the items once I get them onto my new computer.

Thanks a bunch for the assistance.

Answer:Need Internet Explorer & Outook Express Help.

go to "Documents and Settings" directory then into your User Directory and you will see the Favorites directory and then just copy your old favorites into this directory.

I hope this helps.

My outlook express .pst file consists of over 200 fragments, which I would like to fix. I found references to contig.exe on various forums and have downloaded it. I have got to the cmd window and typed in the path for the cmd file but the tool does not seem to be able to deal with spaces in folder names e.g "Documents and Settings".

Any tips?
Outlook Express 6
XP Media Centre Edition SP3

Answer:outlook express .pst file problem

Outlook Express uses a .dbx file to store the mailbox content. What you're using is MS Outlook which has the personal storage in a .pst file. It gets fragmented due to things coming in and out all the time. Ant particular problem?
If you defragment the partition it should do as good as fragmenting a single file. Do it regularly once a week and it should be enough. You can use third party defragmenters which are better than the windows one.
What size is the file? It can't be too big. A much better practice is to create an archive.
And what do you mean that it can't deal with the spaces in Documents and Settings?

The nitty gritty:

We have AVID DV Express operating on Windows XP Professional.

Just in the past week, we've been unable to export our projects from AVID DV Express. We typically save our projects as AVI uncompressed, because we compress the files using other software, depending on our needs (we'er a non-profit).

For this particular project (an 11 minute movie), we've been getting the following error message, after the AVID goes through the export process and craps out just at the very end:

"Unable to export the bin."

The console goes on to say:

Hi all,I want to drag and drop 170 or so jpeg files into the window for Nero Express. This works ok, but it does not place them in numerical order. It goes number 1 then 10, then from 100 up to 109 then 11. Then after each ten increment it places a 12, then 13 etc. Not sure if you understand that? They are all listed nicely in My Pictures but loose the structure in Nero. What can I do please?I want them to read as they were as they are for a friend; it is his daughters wedding and I want them to read in sequence.Regards,Nick

Answer:Nero Express file numbering problem

Yes, that is the way comuters count. You need to put zeros in front to make it work the way you want it to. For example 0001, 0002, 0003 etc..

When I receive an email in outlook express with a pdf file attachement, I can't open it from outlook express. I can open all other attachements like .doc or .xls no problem. I have to save the pdf file and then go to the loacation I saved it at and I can open it up with a double click per normal. I checked the folder options and the assocation is fine as evidenced by the fact I can open once it's saved in a folder. This seemed to start about 6 months ago when I upgraded my adobe reader 6.0 to Adobe 7.0 full version trial. When the trail was over I decided to only use the adobe 7.0 reader. It seems like the problem started then. The error message I get in Outlook express is;

"This file does not have a program associated with it for proforming this action. Create a file association in the folder options controll panel."
In the blue header it lists the Temporary Internet files location under local files directory.

Any help on this one?

Go to a pdf file that you have saved, right click and select open with. On the list, select Adobe and then check the box at the bottom of the dialog window:
Always use the selected program to open this kind of file then OK.

I can't figure out how to print a list of the files I've just burned onto a data cd of mp3 files--sometimes the list would be 150 songs long. If you click print after you burn the data cd, you get a whole list of meaningless burn data but not what I really want which is the artist, title of song and file size. You would think when you press print you would get that basic info but that isn't what prints. The previous version I had of Nero when you pressed print that is what you got -- but not in Nero Express 5.5. Please help.

I always keep a backup of my Outlook .pst file just n case I need it...

Just doing a back up and notice that the files do not have any association linked... I am sure it used to show the Outlook icon but can't be sure... can anyone confirm this.. I did try to link to Outlook but is failed...

This is what I mean...

This is what I get when I try to associate it to Outlook... Which seems odd... unless it is because Outlook is open?

Mine have the Outlook association, I'm using the Office 2016 package rather than the Office 365 but should be same.

I would advise you use the installer (uninstaller - Change), to do a repair rather than manually setting the association as the Office associations are not standard

Question: outook calendar

Bought a new laptop, took my Office 2000 Professional to be installed, instead he put on another Outlook. I installed Outook 2000, removed his program and now I get an error re:pst file. Any idea why I can't send/receive mail?

Question 2: My three year old laptop worked fine until the power cord somehow pulled the plug-in from the motherboard. Repair shop kept it for three weeks, said they soldered it several times and it wouldn't hold, so they sold me a new one. Did I get ripped off or is it next to impossible to fix?

Thanks so much for any advice given,

Answer:outook calendar

Hello and Welcome to TSF

I cannot answer your first question, there is not enough information to go off of. You need to post a complete error message and when you recieve this error.

As for question 2, yes you can solder those connections back on to the motherboard but sometimes they dont hold as they stated. You may just have had a unexperienced person do the soldering, hard to tell.

Here we go again - another problem with Outlook, but this time I think it is Yahoo UK (please note UK):

I have had 1 email acct with gmail and 2 email accts with Yahoo UK. They have worked fine until a few days ago. When I try send/receive one Yahoo account came up with error 0x800CCC92. I finally removed it and when I tried putting it in as new, the test message would not work. After repeated attempts, I now can send for some reason, but for receiving I get:

Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Your email server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account Settings. The server responded: -ERR (AUTH) Incorrect username or password.

I can access my email on the web for that account with no problem. All of the settings are exactly the same as the Yahoo account that works and I still cannot get the incoming to work on this one.

Any ideas?

I created a database in Access 2007. I am a relative newbe at this. One of the functions that I am using is a macro that Microsoft supplied as part of a Contacts table/form template to add Contacts from Outlook to the Contacts table in the the database. It was working just fine until I split the database, putting the tables on a server and the front end on my local PC. After splitting, it will no longer work. I have spent hours searching the Web and found 100's for people asking the same question, but no solution. Front and back end files are all in Trusted locations. Went back to a copy of the pre-split database (which still worked) and copy the object to the new split database. Would not work in the new database. . Saw some talk about using a temp Contacts table, but it did not give enough detail for me to follow.

Anyone have any ideas

I am operating on Windows 7 OS and am having difficulty with Outlook for Office 2010. It always asks for a password each time I sign on and when I open an email. For some reason it doesn't store my password.

Answer:Outook 2010 always requires password

That problem is by no means unique to Outlook 2010, it happens also on Outlook 2007 and on the version before that, and neither is it unique to Windows 7.

Try putting your POP3 server name and password into the "Credential Manager" in Control Panel. For good measure I entered my email credentials twice -- in "Windows Credentials" and in "Generic Credentials". I hardly see that pesky password prompt since doing that.

Read this. Although for Excel it should work for any csv file. Map custom fields is fairly important.

I know there have been some posts going back over a year, but none of them fully solve this issue. For years, the best way to sync Outlook 2010(without corporate exchange server) to the windows phone has been to use the Google Calendar connector to get to their cloud and then onto the Windows phone. This had the advantage of doing two-way synchronization and working with the default calendar in Outlook (the existing .PST file).
Google fully discontinued this service on August 1. Microsoft does not have as simple a solution. The two options I've seen for cloud syncing are to use the Microsoft Hotmail Connector and to use Google App Sync. The Hotmail Connector does not work with the default Outlook profile which means than when an invitation is received from any email account other than hotmail/ it saves to the default calendar, and you then have to copy it to the hotmail calendar in order to sync. The Google App Sync requires a whole different profile with a migration which is an equally big headache or possibly greater. So, neither of these options work without making a lot of manual intervention.
I've been using a local sync program called CompanionLink to sync contacts, notes and tasks. It can sync the calendar but has a couple of disadvantages. 1) you need to manually sync calendar which is not good if constantly on the go and always want to have your appointments. 2) CompanionLink does not feed appointments into the native calendar so it won't appear on the loc... Answer:How to sync Outook 2010 (non-corporate) with Windows phone?

Frankly the best solution is to sign up for MS Office 365. The cheapest plan (Exchange Online) is $4 per month per user, so for $48/year, you'll get seamless sync of contacts, calendar, tasks, and if you choose, email and more, across Outlook and Windows Phone.
Not free, but works much better than Google's App Sync, the Hotmail Connector, and any of the local sync solutions, and it'll work great with any other devices you add in to sync with (since everything supports EAS).

Hello, I was hoping someone could help me with an Outlook 2007 issue a user has been having. Last week, our exchange server was flooded by a lot of e-mails, causing our users messages they tried to send out to fail and given a Outlook delivery delayed message for each. The issue was solved but I have one user who still has a delivery delayed mail in this inbox and upon trying to open it, Outlook crashes and if you try to deleted it, you get the message:

"One or more items in the folder you synchronized do not match. To resolve the conflicts, open the items, and they try this operation again."

I was thinking this notification was in sync with the e-mail that was delayed, so I did a search and couldn't not find anything related to it. Any ideas on who to get rid of this troublesome message?

Hi all. Irritating & timewasting beyond belief - even for Microsoft - is a hidden shortcut in either Outlook 2007, Office 2007 or perhaps in Windows 7. Centred apparently on the "T" key, a combination of keystrokes reduces the display size of text I type. At enormous waste of time, each occurrence can be remedied, via the View tab in Outlook 2007, then the "zoom" facility. But how do I a) locate the set up instructions for this shortcut, and b) alter or reload them?

I'm a reasonably sensitive typist: this glitch is wasting sooo much of my time. Am in the dire straights of using new Windows 7, with new Office 2007 apps, on a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1545.

Advice on shortcut set-up in Outlook 2007, and or in Windows 7 will be much appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Outook 2007 or Windows 7 keyboard shortcut, reducing size of display text.

Is it a laptop you are using.....if so are you sure its not the zoom function on the touch pad

Hello,When I click on a GIF-attachment to open in Outlook Express, the following error message occurs:"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. "I did actually find the Folder Option in the control panel and associated GIF to the Paintbrush program, but I still get the same error message. Strangely, when I copy the attachments and paste them locally on the desktop, I can open them without any problem. (It was also working like that previously aswell) Does it nead an expert tweak in the registry to get this fixed, or is it an Outlook Express problem? Thanks, Burton

I had to reformat my hard disk the other day, so, before doing this I went and backed up my address book and I wanted to backup my folders inside OE5.

I did a search for (Folders.*} and Folders.dbx came up. I copied this file also to another partition and went ahead with the format and re-installation of Win98.

Now, after installation is complete, I went and copied the (Folders.dbx which is about 3MB in size)back to the OE folder.

The problem is that when I start OE5 and try to import the Folders.dbx, OE5 cannot see it. Any suggestions ?

Answer:Outlook Express .dbx file

Did someone tell you it would be called "folders"?

Here's what Technet says:

" Copy the .mbx files to another folder. To do so, follow these steps:

Quit Outlook Express.

Create a new folder to store the .mbx files. For example:

For information about how to create a folder, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "new folder" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "New Folders" topic.

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

In the Named box, type "*.mbx" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.

For each mail folder that you want to create a backup copy of, copy the corresponding <filename>.mbx file to the folder that you created in step 2. For example, the Inbox.mbx file is the Inbox folder.

For information about how to copy a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "copying" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "files or folders" topic.

For additional information about backing up mail folders, click Contents And Index on the Help menu in Outlook Express, click the Index tab, type "backing up mail folders" (without quotation marks), and then click Display. "

I have a dead laptop and I need to get the Outlook Express file off the computer. I know with the full version of Outlook I can just nab the .PST file. But I am not sure what hold all the info in OE. I found a whole bunch of DBX files - it there just one main one that has all the email and addresses in it??

Any pointers here?

Answer:Outlook Express file?

OE stores its data in various .dbx files...inbox.dbx, sent items.dbx, etc. So you'll need to grab all the .dbx files that you want data from.

The address book is a .wab file stored in a different location than the .dbx files. Search the drive for "*.wab" (without the quotes, with the asterisk and dot). If it finds more than one, the one that's the largest file size is probably your address book.

I don't recall this being a problem before I upgraded to OE6 but hope someone can help.
When I receive emails with jpg attachments they are listed as expected. If I open the email and right click on the attachment I get the message
'This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel'
I had already done that using mpaint instead of the default MS PhotoEditor (which works fine) If I do it again by going to File Types, scroll down to jpg, browse to Program Files/Windows NT/Accessories/ and select mpaint.exe
I get the same message.
The attachments are fine bexause I can right click on them, Save As, to Desktop and double click opens them in paint. So the fie association I set up works on the Desktop but not in OE.
Am I doing something wrong?

I have a document saved on my laptop(windows 98) and it was created by Microsoft Word. I wanted it on my other computer that has Windows XP. So, I just sent the file to myself as an attatchment. Why does Outlook Express reject it and what can I do to move it over. Hi rover1...<BR><BR>Tricky... but it can be done. I take it you mean you want to copy e-mails from the Drafts folder of your desktop to the Drafts folder on your Laptop or an on sight computer?<BR><BR>Like I said... tricky. Have a floppy disk ready. First you open the e-mail you want to transfer. Then either on the open e-mail or in the top toolbar of Outlook click "File" then "Save as..." In the new window that pops up... first make sure the file type at the bottom is "Mail(*.eml)". Then name the file and save to a floppy disk. Now you can take the e-mails and load then to any computer.<BR><BR>Now comes the tricky part... getting them back into Outlook. First after you put the floppy into the other computer. Then open the floppy. (My Computer double click A: ) Then reduce the window and open Outlook. Then Put floppy window back up and open one of the e-mails you want to transfer. The key on getting it back into Outlook is to change something in the saved e-mail. Even if you have to change it back. (Good way is to type anything at the end of the last sentence in an e-mail then remove it.) Then try to X out said e-mail. You will then be asked "Do you want to save changes to this message". At witch time you will click the "Yes" button. This will drop the e-mail into the Outlook Drafts folder of any computer.<BR><BR>I don't personally know any other way to do as you ask. Hope I... Hi There The other day my PC crashed whilst I was using OE6 when it rebooted I went back in to OE6 and found that all my folders under the inbox had gone as well as all the emails in them. Also the emails in the main inbox were also missing.I did some research on the net and using the advice from Microsoft support I was able to find the missing files and copy them to a backup folder. The file formats are either .bak or .dbx. I followed the MS advice and tried to import these files back in to OE6 with no luck. Is there a method or free program which will enable me to restore my emails so that I can read them etc.Note before I tried to uimport thr files I did recrate the folders I had under the inbox folder.Cheers in advance

Recently, when using Outlook Express, I noticed that my original address book/list was replaced by my husband’s address book/list (which he had created for Outlook 2000. I cannot seem to locate my original address book/list I had for Outlook Express. Can you help me locate the address book for Outlook Express separate from one created for Outlook 2000?

Outlook Express uses a wab file, so search on the hard drive for *.wab and that will direct you to your address book.

Outlook 2000 uses pab file, so your husband's file would have the pab extension on it.

As an elderly man who enjoys keeping his childrens/grandchildrens computers in good order, I would be obliged for help on the following matter. Whenever I format a hard-drive, I have to go through all the rigmarole of setting up their 'e' mail addresses on outlook express, manually. We all use Wind 98 SE which does not have its own back-up system, so is there any way that I can record their file Outlook Express 6 containing their 'e' mail data, onto a floppy disc, or cd, so that I can install it without having to do everything manually, thereby saving all data. Information on how to save the Outlook Express data, and how to reinstall it onto the hard-drive would be a great help. Thanks for any assistance given.

You can export the address book by opening it, choosing file, export, and then give it a name. Save to a floppy or CD.I'm not sure how to save the emails themselves, but it can be done.

There is no reliable method of doing what you ask to spot all viruses. Almost any attachment to an email, as well as embedded scripts, could potentially contain a virus. The only reliable method is to install a good quality anti-virus program. I recommend Norton.

Go into Outlook Express - Tools - Options - Signatures . The virus probably tried to spread by using your Signature option in your e-mail. Delete or remove any Signatures and create a new one if you want to include a personal signature with the e-mails you send. Or leave it blank.

Relatively new PC with Windows {OEM} XP Home SP 2 OS running with
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850
ASUS P5K: Intel P35, PCIE x16
4 GB (2 x 2 GB) Mushkin memory
512 MB NVidia GeForce 8500GT
Western Digital 500 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA 3.0 I am fine using Outlook Express for sending and receiving
of email so this isn't a major problem but I'm freaked out by the
"regeneration" of .dbx file after I've cleaned out all the .dbx files
(except, of course, the folders.dbx which I've left alone) within
the OE folder within owner/local settings/application data/identities.

Rather than just creating an inbox.dbx folder... my computer/OE
instead makes a folder called inbox (1).dbx and that has never
happened before. All my incoming mail is being stored in that folder.

If I try to rename the folder my inbox emails just disappear. I have
a program called DBXtract that I've used to try and workaround with no
success.... good program but hot helpful with this particular issue.

Could mail settings with my ISP (verizon) somehow affect settings
directly within my OE ? I'm guessing the answer is yes and thinking
my problem may lie with my mailbox/settings at Verizon Central....

Has anyone had or heard of this problem?

Thanks, BILL

Answer:Outlook Express Generating Odd Dbx File ?

Do you also still have an Inbox.dbx along with the Inbox (1).dbx, or just the one?I'm still looking through Google about this, but here's something you could try. First off, do some backing up first so nothing important is lost forever. A lot of this backing up is redundant, but we want plenty of options left to try.1. Go into your identity and copy the whole darned OE Identity folder into My Documents.C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities(You probably only need the folder containing your dbx files, but we're playing it safe.)2. Create a "Backup" folder in OE and move the emails from your Inbox to that folder.2a. Optional. You didn't say exactly how DBXtract failed to help you. But if you doubt it recovered a usable backup of your emails, here is another program (free) that I saw mentioned on several forums.Outlook Express Extraction (scroll down a bit to find it) I haven't found any description of what it looks like, what it actually does, or how to actually use it. But no one said it did any harm. Your choice.2. Empty your recycle bin. This is just to make it easy to find anything you might need to restore.3. Make a System Restore PointNow try deleting the Inbox.dbx (if you have that too) and Inbox (1).dbx again. (I'm assuming you already knew that OE should be closed when doing this?)Restart OE to recreate the new Inbox.dbx. Is your Inbox em... Read more

NOTE: Perhaps I should have broken this post down into separate posts with separate questions in different forums. If so, I would appreciate being so advised and I will withdraw this post and do the breaking down. I have kept it as one post because the questions arise out of the same facts and perhaps are interrelated.

I have a file in C:\My Documents\My Pictures which contains a photo I took with my digital camera. The file is Type IrfanView and the size is 902kb, and it has a .tif extension. When I open the file, I see the photo I took.

A few days ago, when I was experimenting with my new camera, I went to my Hotmail account through Outlook Express and emailed the file to my daughter, with a copy to myself, as an attachment. The email shows up in my Hotmail inbox, but when I try to open the attachment I get an IrfanView error message telling me that "This is not a valid TIFF file.

Today, I went directly to my Hotmail account (not through Outlook Express) and opened up the email in my Hotmail inbox. But when I returned to my inbox I found that it showed the email as having been sent a second time and as having a size of 468kb. In My Pictures the size is shown as 902kb in the first email, the one I actually did send, it is shown as 1412kb. Well, I opened up this second sending in my Hotmail inbox and when I returned to my inbox it showed a third sending, this... Read more

Good afternoon,

I recently made the switch to Mac and backed up my old emails from Outlook Express (I think) and it created a .pst file.

Now, I searched and searched for how to get those emails on to my Mac, but I've given up and don't really care that much. The reason being, I have an old Sony laptop that is running Win98SE and has Outlook Express on it. The backup was made on an old Dell, then transfered around for a bit before it found it's home on my laptop.

For the life of me, I can't seem to figure out how to "import" the .pst file into Outlook Express. From looking through these forums, I believe I can only do this through using Outlook, not OE.

If anyone can help me, I would be very appreciative. The .pst fils is only 90MB give or take.

Answer:Outlook Express 6 and the .PST file I can't open

Im not sire you will be able to import a .pst file into Outlook Express as a .pst file is for Microsoft Outlook.

You can try this method thogh.

Open Outlook Express. Click File > Import > in the list select Outlook express 6 (or 4 if its an old version) > Click Next > Select the middle option 'Import mail from an OE6 Store directory' and click OK > Browse to the .pst file and click Next.

Hopefully this will work. If not, go back to the origional pc with outlook express, and follow these steps:

Copy Mail Files to a Backup Folder

To make a backup copy of your Outlook Express e-mail message files:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.
3. Select the folder location, and then press CTRL+C to copy the location.
4. Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.
5. Click Start, and then click Run.
6. In the Open box, press CTRL+V, and then click OK.
7. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
8. On the Edit menu, click Copy, and then close the window.
9. Right-click any empty space on your desktop, click New, and then click Folder.
10. Type mail backup for the folder name, and then press ENTER.
11. Double-click the Mail Backup folder to open it.
12. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
13. Close the Mail Backup window.

Export the Address Book to a File

NOTE: This step is very important when multiple Identities are in use. A .WAB (Windows Address Book) file is used by Outlook Express 5... Read more

Hi, First Time poster on here. I have a problem with Outlook express 6. I have let my sent file folder (sentfiles.dbx) get too big, its at 2Gigs+ and is now corrupt. When I try to look in the sent item file nothing shows up. I need to retrieve some of those sent files as I had not archived them yet to specific folders. I know that Outbox, Inbox and Sent Files should not get bigger than 2 gigs or they become corrupt, I also already know that if I just delete the file Outlook will automatically create new ones getting Outlook to run properly again. What I need to know is if it possible to retrieve my individual emails from the corrupted sent file folder and how do I go about this. I've tried to research it online but I keep getting sent to retrieval software sites that must be purchased, I would prefer doing this without buying anything if possible. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can anyone tell me why a file attachment sent using Outlook would not be received by Outlook Express when I send it. Have unchecked the section that says block potentially harmful attachments but still the program does not seem to receive some files.
I am at a loss as to why this happens and have it occur on many different machines not just the one.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Will need your OS and version numbers along with names of programs involved in your problem. Always better to post too many details than not enough.

There are a few recent threads on similar problems, check those as well.

I have Outlook Express and have recently found that access has been denied to some file attachments attached to e mails sent to me. There is a line at the top of the e mail stating : "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your e mail" These attachments are generally Microsoft Word documents - .doc documents. I have not had a problem previously with access to such documents and attached photos are not a problem. Further I have discovered that all such document attachments that I have saved to files within Outlook Express which I have previously opened and had access to cannot now be opened, access being denied. I have AVG antivirus software on my computer which I run regularly and which has not detected any viruses at all.
Can you help please.

Mr. J. Considine.

Answer:Outlook Express - File Attachments

Hi Mr. Considine and welcome to TSG.
First thing to check is at the top of OE click on Tools. Then click on Options. Next click the Tab that says security. Uncheck the box next to "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". Also uncheck "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail". These are kind of redundant if your AVG E-mail scanner is on and up to date.
If that doesn't work, disconnect from the internet and disable the AVG and see if they will open. Remember to enable it again before going back on line. Let us know if that works for you or not.

Augh! Good grief! My bitterness towards Microsoft grows stronger every day:

I use "The Bat!" for e-mail, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a very good alternative to Outlook. Within the past month, I have found that every time I boot up, my .eml file extensions have been bushwacked by Outlook Express. The real interesting part of this is that I can't even find where Outlook Express is starting. I don't have it in my Startup directory, and it's in none of the Run registry keys.

I'm running XP, and did find it in Startup for one of the other accounts on my machine so I removed it from there. The best gag is that when I deleted the Outlook Express folder (since I can't locate IExplorer uninstall anywhere now) it magically reappeared moments later. I deleted from boot Command Prompt to finally kill it, but something is creating the directory on bootup.

Anyone had similar problems, or have suggestions for tracking down the culprit? I'm about at the end of my patience with Microsoft and Windows.

Answer:Outlook Express re-registering file extensions

I have not encountered that problem, but take a look at the following article and see if it might help you. You could just do the uninstall steps and then not reinstall and see if that takes care of the problem.;EN-US;Q256219

Another thing is MS Messenger running at startup also? The two of them are tied together in XP.

I would also run the following command from a command prompt

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

I am trying to migrate from XP to Windows 10. On XP, I have a large address book in a .wab file. I couldn't find any help about how to access it in Windows 10, so I tried clicking on the .wab file. Windows 10 then said it was importing my contacts. The process took a few minutes, and I could see my contacts' names flying by. It seemed to finish normally, but now I can't find the contracts on Windows 10. After the import, there was a message saying my contacts were in something called People. I found People in the Start menu under All Apps, but when it opened, it said "No contacts were found." Please help.

Put Contacts in the Search or Run box and it should take you to the Contacts Folder in C:\Users\YOUR_NAMZE\Contacts. I usually use Windows Address Book on WinXP to Export the contacts to a .csv/Comma Separated Value file which can be use for importing into a number of E-Mail programs and some Webmail and can also be opened in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel, Corel/WordPerfect Quattro Pro, Lotus 1-2-3, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, etc.

During a lockup, Outlook Express V6 'lost' the inbox contents. When I checked the folders there was a new Inbox (1).dbx file that had 3 messages that were downloaded when I restarted. I copied all the .dbx files to a couple of other folders, deleted all the files, and restarted. The three new downloads came back. Tried to import the inbox from one of the backups. Message indicated import was complete but no files were imported. I tried again to import files from all folders. It imported all but the inbox. I then had duplicate files in all the other folders. During this mess I deleted the Inbox (1).dbx and tried replacin g it with the old inbox file, tried again after renaming the old file to the (1) version, etc. The "lost" version of the inbox is a little over 12kbytes in size.

Any ideas on how to get back my inbox contents?

Answer:Outlook Express lost file import?

Hello and Welcome to MG's

Check your Inbox "view" it could be set to show only new messages and the reason for the three messages that showed.

View > Current View > Show all messages

You also might find this helpful in restoring if needed.
