Procurve Manager with 2530 switch

Question: Procurve Manager with 2530 switch

I have installed a Procurve 2530 j9773a switch for a customer. However when trying to add it to PCM it connects and successfully sees the SNMP community, however it then hangs on discovering devices. The software is quite old now, so my query is do we need to update the version of software or is there MIB like file for this switch we need to import before hand. If the software needs to be updated, does anyone know of a chart to compare which switch models are compatible with which version of update. Any information would be helpful.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: Hp Procurve Switch

Hello, I'm trying to configure the timezone for my HP procurve 2610 switch. So far I tried the -4 and -5 timezones (i'm located in NH) and the time is still off. The command I'm using is "time timezone <-timezone> any suggestions?

Answer:Hp Procurve Switch

issue the "time timezone ?" command I'm looking at a 2626 right now and it expects the timezone to be given in minutes. Also remember your "time daylight-time-rule ..." which you have to use to put in your dates for the beginning/end of daylight saving.

I'm looking at getting a Procurve switch with 24 1 Gig ports. I am looking for a L2 managed switch but need two different models:

1) basic 24port 1Gig managed L2 switch

2) same as #1 but POE capable

I'm going to be installing some APs and they come with injectors. So, I don't HAVE to have the POE option. I will be installing at least 4 or 5 of them though so I would rather not have to find a good spot for the injectors to sit but it's going to depend on price difference.

What would you recommend? I guess I would rather stick to a true procurve as opposed to the 3com procurve equipment if possible.

Answer:Which Procurve Switch

One thing I would suggest is go to procurve.com and they have a "switch selector" function there that you can put in what you need and it will narrow down which switches they offer with those capabilities.

I tried to find the answer on a thread, but couldn't.....

I just got an HP Procurve 1700-24 (setting up a LAN area downstairs). I had the network running from a linksys BEFCMU10 modem to a netgear WGR614v2 router. Worked fine.

I unplugged the router and plugged the modem into the dual personality port on the switch, and plugged my main PC into port 1. the modem's IP is 192.168.100.1, so I set the switch to 192.168.100.10 and set a static IP for the PC to 192.168.100.21. subnets are at 255.255.255.0, gateway on the PC was set to 192.168.100.1 (maybe I went wrong here). I cannot access the web.

I can ping both the switch and modem. Wireshark picks up the modem's chatter as well. I'm assuming it's a problem with the DNS, but it's a bit out of my league. I tried entering both the modem's LAN IP, and my ISP provided IP, but nothing worked. I tried different ports, different computers. I reset the modem while plugged into the switch. The router is obviously providing something that I am not in static mode. I also attempted to automatically obtain an IP while everything was plugged in. Didn't work either. I'd like to know how to make it work with static IPs, but I'm loosing it here......

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

-Mogg

Answer:Not able to connect to web through Procurve Switch

The switch is layer 2, it can't do nat which you need to share your internet. You still need the Netgear router in the mix.

Is the HP ProCurve 1400-8G a good switch, and is there anything better at this pricerange?

Answer:HP ProCurve 1400-8G Switch

Well - it's kind of a 'can't go wrong with' reassurance choice, especially given that everything else around it - at the level of the 1400G at least - will likely work just as well as the HP. I mean, I have a bunch of 1800-8G's working as edge-of-edge switches at office and home, and I've never had any problems. However, I also have a couple of 5-port Belkin gigabit switches that have also trucked on faithfully over the years in a pretty traffic-intensive situation.

I'm looking for a cheap, reliable, and fast switch. I know that i'm set on getting an HP Procurve switch, but I just can't decide on one.

I've narrowed down my selection to two units:

HP Procurve 1400-24G

HP Procurve 1800-24G

What's the difference and which is a better choice?
I'm guessing that the 1800-24G may be managed unlike the 1400-24G?

All i need is gigabit, the 22 ports, and speed, which i know both will provide.
Do i really need managed? This will be depolyed in an office with less than 10 machines.

- thanks

Answer:HP Procurve Switch - Help Decide

The 1800 series is web-managed and gives you support for VLANs and IEEE 802.3ad link aggregation. In short, the 1800 offers a more robust business solution to the very basic 1400 series. If you intend this switch to grow with the company, I'd recommend you get the 1800. If all they need is basic connectivity, the 1400 will do fine.

I have just replaced my two HP ProCurve 4000M's with new ones (same brand, same model). The first switch replacement went without a hitch. The second switch is giving me a problem. I cannot get to it unless I connect directly to it using the serial port. It was given an IP address by DHCP (I'm running a windows 2000 network) but I could not ping the address at all. I went into the switch and changed that IP Address, reset the switch but still cannot connect or ping.

Other than that, the switch is operational and there seem to be no network issues.

Why can't I ping the darn thing?

Can anyone shed some light on this and perhaps figure out what is going on?

TIA,
Pat

Answer:HP ProCurve Switch Problem

I would advise against setting up a switch with DHCP. Set it them up staticly and exclude it from the DHCP scope.

This is a shot in the dark but it never hurts to ask....

I picked up this switch to tinker with, however the previous company that owned it didn't give me any manuals or anything to go with it. I need to default the switch because when i use HyperTerminal to get into it, it still has all the programming from the previous company and is asking for a user name & login.

I was curious to know if there is an easy way to default this switch back to its factory settings, right now i am searching through a 420+ page PDF from HP and would love to find an easier way....thanks for any help u guys can supply!

Answer:Defaulting HP Procurve 4108GL switch

"returning the switch to its factory default configuration (by using the
erase startup-config command or the Clear/Reset button combination described in the switch’s Installation and Getting Started Guide)"

Is this switch passive? Does anyone know? I can't seem to find anything via google, but I did find that the HP ProCurve 1800-24G Switch is passive, i would think the 48 port one would be also, but I'm not sure.

Answer:HP ProCurve Switch 2650 48 port passive???

Passive? Meaning NON-POE?

All Procurve switches will end the model # with PWR for POE devices.

Hello we have at office today the ProCurve Switch 1700-24.Now we have upgraded the fiber connection to 300 mbit. But it seems that the ProCurve Switch 1700-24 is only capable of outputting 1000mbit on port 23-24, and port 1-22 is only 10mbit.And we would need to output over 100+ mbit on all ports, to local office pc.So i guess this switvch is to old to handle this. If i upgrade to the HPE 1920-24G , is that the same type of switch ? Just that it can output 100+ on all ports .so we can get the full effect on our new fiber connection. regards from Mike

I am installing a couple of 2810-48 hp procurves in my first rack and data closet. I've had no experience with RJ-45 serial console ports on switches since I've only used webbased gui management thus far.

What's the recommended workflow for managing all the console ports on such equipment? Do you use serial to usb adapters and connect the computer to each appliance to work on them? Would cat5 w/ rj45 terminated and putty connect the pc and switch?

What's generally used to manage snmp?

Answer:Pls recommend best way to manage multiple procurve switch consoles

Most of the time you'll use the console port for initial configuration of the switch, and once you've got the management VLAN configured and the switch is IP connectible, you'll manage it that way. As far as that first time connection, I have a laptop with an RS-232 port, but a USB dongle and DB9->RJ45 console cable works too, just make sure your dongle has a male DB9 and isn't intended to connect directly to the DCE. Then obviously just fire up Putty or Tera Term and you're in. If you want a 'permanent' solution for serial connectivity, buy yourself a console server, though unless you can connect them to the network at another point, it kinda defeats the purpose of it being 'out of band'.

HP provides ProCurve Manager for free on their website. It's a pretty heavy application, but works well. I'm not sure it's worthwhile for two switches. What sort of SNMP utility are you looking for? There are lots of different ways to use it depending on your needs.

Answer:Kyocera 2530 scanning to network pcs?

we have a Lanier 2135 (i belive) that does network scanning.

Basically, you set up the scanner/printer/copier/coffee maker/jukebox on the network.

Then install the management software on a computer that will never be turned off (server), then the software should be able to find the scanner via broadcast/responce, and establish the connection.

Then you should be able to assign a directory on the network where the management software will dump the processes scans.

Ok, so I've got a Dell Dimension 2530 a client brought in the other day wanting a fresh install of XP Home Edition on there.

Having being an older system with no recovery partition and hanging on the windows screen more times than not I popped in my XP HOME OEM DVD.

FIRST FAIL - No DVD drive...wouldn't read my external DVD drive...Having plenty on hand I popped one in for his main ROM Drive.

Booted up into the DVD fine...DELETED his old partition and reformatted just fine.

SECOND FAIL - Wake up and the installation hung up right near the end before you enter a user name and your authentication of windows for the system.

Normally when something like this has happened to me I can reboot the PC and it will resume the installation. This time that was not the case it posts, then goes to a black screen with a white blinking underscore for about 40 seconds like its trying to access my DVD...then the screen goes blank completely. ALT f4 wouldn't work and it sat there for a period of time...SO option one...I did some things in BIOS so I restored it to default....to no avail...

This same thing happens to me when trying to boot to JUST the ROM drive.

I'm a tech by trade, but a beginning tech. Any help on this issue would be most appreciated.

Answer:Dell Dimension 2530 Completely STUMPED!

I would suggest testing the hard drive using the manufacturer diagnostics.

Every time I try to print anything, my WF-2530 feeds a sheet through and reports paper out. The unit has seen little use and has never had a paper jam. I have carefully loaded only a few sheets of regular 20 lb paper and it does it every time. I have done the same with some Kodak photo paper for inkjet and gotten the same results. It simply does not detect that there is paper loaded.

I have tried resetting the unit, powering off then on, disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord. Nothing causes it to recognize that paper is loaded after it feeds the first sheet through. Press the 'OK' button and it will feed another sheet and continue to report 'paper out'.

I don't want to replace such a lightly used printer. If I can correct whatever is wrong with the paper sensor it would be a blessing. Help!

Answer:Wishing to upgrade hardrive of Think Pad 2530 - z60m, from 100MB to 300MB

The difference is the speed and buffer, the latter drive being faster and having twice the buffer and it will perform a lot better than the first one. Please be advised that you have to stay with 32-bit Vista on your Z60m, 64-bit will not install on it. Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm trying to watch a movie with my headphones for best sound experience. But when I open up Realtek HD Audio Manager and try to change the settings from Stereo to 7.1 Speaker, the program freezes, has a black box on top, and then changes back to stereo. It would also sometimes go blank, as in all I see is the program and the colored background, but there won't be any more images and options.

Then also, I'm unable to hear audio from my headphones when trying to change the setting. The button that let's me test the audio also doesn't work in the manager anymore after this.

Now after a bunch of tries, I got it to be 7.1 Speaker. The sound was better, but I couldn't hear people's voices. So after the big headache, I decided to switch back to Stereo... But now it freezes for a few seconds and go's back to 7.1 and I loose audio from my headphones. I tried switching to 5.1 but the same problem.

So at the moment, I am stuck at 7.1 sound without audio and unable to switch. My bluetooth speakers work when I connect them though (note: with my bluetooth speakers it does not give me any options to switch the sound type).

Yes my drivers are up to date (I just checked). I never had this issue before, but it is REALLY annoying, especially since I just want to sit down, relax, and enjoy a movie.

Please can anyone help me

Question: HP Procurve

Recently I was tasked with shutting down a part of my company. We cleared out one of our server rooms and found a few things, among them, a HP Procurve 5304xl Switch with two J4850A's slotted in. This wasnt used as far as I know and I was wondering how to sell it and if it would be worth trying to post it in FS.

Answer:HP Procurve

J4850A is the product code for the 5304xl

I'm assuming it has two power supplies? or does it actually have switch card blades?
If it's just the unit with power supplies and no switch card blades, then it's worth about $200 + shipping

Question: Procurve

Hy,
I am trying to create vlans but for some reason it doesn't work. I hav a procurve 1910 and two procurves 1810. In the 1910 switch I configured it like this:
First I go to the left hand panel and click on IPv 4 routing. Then I click "Create" in the Destination IP Address and enter 0.0.0.0 and Subnetmask 0.0.0.0. Than I fill in the IP address of my router 192.168.4.1. I select preference and enter 2.

I am saying to the switch that the swich all receiving traffic will be sent to my router (next hop). On my computer I set the default gateway to 192.168.4.50 (IP address of my 1910 switch). Now I'm able to ping to the switch, router, and address on the internet.

Now I configure the vlans to my switch. First I go to Network, select VLAN and create. I type 2 in the field VlanID and click create. Than I change the name. I repeat this for all my vlans

To this switch I want to connect my 1810 switches and 1810 switches are Vlan aware. I set every port to be tagged into every Vlan. Now I wanna assign Vlans to ports. First I go to Network, then Vlan and then Modify Port.

By default every port will be ‘untagged’ in VLAN 1 so I don’t make any modifications to this. I click Select All, then Tagged and last of all Enter the VLAN ID’s in this case 2,3,4,6,11,14 and click Apply

You will receive a pop up letting you know that Access Ports will change to Hybrid Ports, Then I click OK.

Than I assign an IP address to every Vlan.

Answer:Procurve

On the ports on both switches that are connected make sure your VLANs are tagged on those ports.

Set your access or "PC" ports to "untagged" in the appropriate VLANs. These ports need to be set to access and only have the appropriate VLAN set as untagged.

Also do you have DHCP running on each VLAN and setup correctly for each VLAN's subnet?

Hello -

I am fairly familiar with procurve switches -- however, I've never needed to do this until now, so I'm kind of lost.

Where I've setup this ProCurve 2626-PWR before it was just concerned with one VLAN, so that was easy. Now we've moved it to be used elsewhere and it needs to be completely re-configured since we are dealing with multiple VLANs. Hopefully I can explain my thoughts well enough.

We have three VLANs: our wireless VLAN 140 (ip address 10.10.x.x), our library VLAN 110 (10.7.x.x) and our management VLAN 5 (10.5.x.x). The switch is going to be on the management VLAN so I gave it a proper IP address.

Now in the CIsco world I would setup VTP, let the switch learn of all the VLANs and then just do:

Code:
switchport access vlan 140
on whichever port I want to be in VLAN 140 and I'd be done. How do I do this on ProCurve? If I do:

Code:
config
vlan 140
tagged 1-10
will that work?

I guess I just basically need to understand how to add ports to VLANs on a ProCurve in a way that it will be able to go back to our core Cisco 3750 and know what to do with the devices on that port.

Thanks!

Answer:Any ProCurve experts?

that should work. I just had to work on a 3500-yl and here is a sample of some of the VLAN crap I have on there:

vlan 1
name "TIFFIN"
untagged 3-47
ip helper-address 10.3.0.10
ip address 10.1.0.1 255.255.0.0
tagged 48
no untagged 1-2
exit

Question: Procurve 1810 24G

Hello everyone,

I have a question about setting up vlans on 6 procurve 1810. The aim is to set 5 vlans. I looked on the internet but could not find a good explanation. Eventually I then ended up on this forum. I hope someone can help me. Standard has procurve vlan 1. When I set vlans, I don't make any changes on 3 ports. One for my connection, the server and uplink to the router. After setting vlans, I connect another PC to a vlan I created but I could not connect to the internet. On the DHCP server, I created different scopes. They are also not divided to the switches. I'm fairly new to networking and hope there is someone who can give me clear advice on how to do this.

If you need more info, please ask me and I will give it to you. This really keeps me awake at night.

Thanks

Answer:Procurve 1810 24G

Huh? This reads like a spam post. Forgive me if English isnt your native language but can you explain this better?

I am using some HP Procurve PoE switches that have some built in QoS functions. I'd like to use those functions to apply DCSP values to Citrix packets to tag them AF41 so our edge routers recognize them as such.

Thus far, using the built-in features have proven to be unsuccessful (using Wireshark to verify packet headers). Is anybody here a guru with Procurve switches and can help me get this enabled?

I'm about to undertake a project to re-configure the network for the company and I need to see if someone can provide some input. I'm not a novice, but nor am I a expert. The network was set up with a linksys E900 and the Procurve. A fiber connection comes into the office, connects to the E900 through a converter and then to the procurve. The E900 handles all of the routing and management (I use the term loosely), which is what I want to change. The Procurve has a fiber port, but I would like to know if I could use the fiber converter to the Procurve, and then take the E900 off one of the ports of the switch. Then, I would like to be able to manage the network with the Procurve to set priorities. I've read that it's possible to manage the network with the Procurve, but I could use some help with step by step guides. There are about 18 physical connections in the building, and several wireless ones and I want to configure about 5 computers to have the highest priority and then scale from there. Is the Procurve Manager a necessity to manage the network, or just a nice GUI? Any input is appreciated.

Question: Procurve 2420

Hi,
I have a procurve 1910 and a procurve 1810. I can connect both of these switches. I also have a procurve 2420 who I can't connect to. When I do a networkscan I get the ip address of the 2420 switch as 192.168.1.213. When I type that address in I get the famous page 'page not found' even when in the same subnet. Does anyone knows how to get into the webinterface of the 2420 switch?
Thank you

Answer:Procurve 2420

Factory reset?

Maybe the 2420 is using a non standard subnet?

I'd just reset it personally....

Have you tried connecting to the 2420's IP with https? Just a thought

Hi everyone,

I have 8 1810 procurve switches and 3 1800 procurve switches that I want to give 3 vlans. Someone could explain me on how to do that? Wich configurations I have to do on 2008 server to assign the ip addresses? Now I have 2 networks physically seperated.
192.168.11.0 and 192.168.14.0
The aim is to make 3 networks:
192.168.5.0, 192.168.11.0 and 192.168.14.0
They are connected to 1810 switches and connected by trunks to the other switches (only network 14). Does anyone can tell me how I can make network 11 and 14 ping to eachother? I am totally new in networking so speak if you want to a 5 year old

Thanks

Hello,

I would like to know what do you think about the networking products line of HP.

I've used HP Procurve OS for a certain time and I begin to use to use Comware with HP 5500EL and 5120EL.

It looks not bad and I lot more featured, so I'm choosing for my next deployment what to choose between HP Procurve or Comware based ?

How will be the future ? Will HP abandon old procurves switchs to go to Comware only ?

Thank you.

Answer:HP : Procurve OS vs Comware ?

I think they are going openstack route.

I currently have 24 computers running of 24 port switch. I will be adding another 24 so i plan to upgrade to a 48.Im looking at the hp procurve 2650. Is this a good addition to the system or would something else suit me better. I need it to be managed as i wont be at the location all the time and need to be able to access it to fix problems.

Answer:Hp procurve 2650 right for me?

I can say HP makes very nice switches esp. on a budget and if you need it managed. In the past had a few opportunities to work with them and I thought they were really nice. Have you tried to google some reviews on it?

Question: ProCurve 5400

Hi all -

I'm hoping someone is familiar with this and can shed some light for me. Just got a ProCurve 5406zl put on my desk and am currently trying to configure it. I threw a 20 port + 4 mGBIC module in it (j8705A) and am trying to configure that n particular. However, when I am trying to configure one of the mGBIC ports it will not allow me - it will say Invalid Input as if the port (B24) does not even exist. However, if I try anything else on the module (besides the 3 other mGBICs) - B1-B20 - those are recognized fine. I'm more of a Cisco guy - so, am I missing something really easy?

Answer:ProCurve 5400

I'm a bit configured. It sounds like you're trying to configure a certain port on that card. Am I wrong? Are you trying to change the duplex settings of that GBIC card? I believe they only operate at 1000base. Are you trying to make that port part of a certain VLAN?

I have the 5406, so I'd be more than willing to help.

Question: Procurve VLAN DFG

Let's try this again..

On a Procurve 2910al can you have a default route per VLAN? Eg.

VLAN10 - 10.0.10.0/24 - 0.0.0.0 10.0.10.254
VLAN20 - 10.0.20.0/24 - 0.0.0.0 10.0.20.254
VLAN30 - 10.0.30.0/24 - 0.0.0.0 10.0.30.254

Routing is enabled on the switch. I would like the default route for each VLAN to be 10.0.x.254 which is an interface on my ASA.

Cheers

I have finally ran 4 drops to each room in the house, and now I have to get it all together.

I have been looking at some used HP ProCurve 48 ports, and I am seeing A,B, and C revisions of the 2650, and yet I am not finding much info on the differences.

I am also looking at a couple of 2610 version, but again having some issues with info.

I am clueless on networking of this size, and could greatly use some guidance.

Is the ProCurve suitable for home, and what are the revisions I should be looking at?

Answer:HP ProCurve for home use?

Any of those revisions are going to be worlds better than home user products from dlink and the like. Procurve products are a nice blend of stability and some advanced features without the required skills and knowledge of products like cisco.2610'

I still have several 2610's in my network at work. Great little switch and can be had pretty darn cheap these days.

Question: HP Procurve SFPs

I'm interested in getting several HP Procurve 2510-48s as Layer2 switches, but all the SFPs I've found seem really expensive...$550 for a 48-port switch, but $300 for a SFP? Ouch!

Will these take generic SFPs, or at least, non-HP ones?

gbics are expensive - especially LX SFPs (~$1k each).

you've got PM on SFPs. i have some (new or barely used) for sale from my decommissioned lab im no longer using.

All -

Working on upgrading the firmware on some access points (Procurve 420 J8130B). Many have successfully upgraded, 2 have not. 1 is more or less dead and I plan on calling it in.

The other one is kind of in "limbo". Software was at v2.2.0.8 upgrading to 2.2.5. Something got screwed up in the upgrade process because the software is now at v2.2.0.8-dflt. I cannot access the web admin of the AP. I use the copy tftp file at the CLI and that fails to get the new software. I get tftp read failed !! on the AP itself when plugged in through the console.

Has anyone ran into this before?

I've Googled it and have only come across someone saying that the upgrade to 2.2.5 took two tries on many of his APs (as it did with many of mine).

Gday all,

I have 2 procurve switches
2848
2650

Procurve stacking? Is that just a way too manage both switches together?
Or is it for combining both switches together?

Or is that called something else in procurve speak?
Or is that feature not actually available etc?

Thanks.... I am new to advanced networking stuff

Next to learn how to breakup the 2848 into multiple switches... Eg Vlans I believe... Sould be fun

.

Answer:Please explain HP Procurve speak

It's basically making both switches into one. You can then manage them both from one switch.

Was thinking about buying a 1810g-24 but I've recently noticed that HP are listing a new model number (J9801A and J9803A), which they say is the v2 model.
The J9801A appears to be only a 10/100 switch, while the J9803A is a 10/100/1000 switch.

I haven't seen any threads/posts mentioning this - at least not from my searching. Anyone got one of them? Or compared them in-depth to the v1 model?

I've compared the 24 port v2 gigabit model (J9803A) to the 24 port v1 gigabit model (J9450A) using HP's specification sheet. The v2 has the following over the v1 model:
- Higher switching capacity (52 vs 48 Gbps). [v2 has 24 gigabit ports + two SFP ports. v1 only has 24 ports.]
- Half the weight (~1kg vs ~2kg). [Cheaper components? NetJunkie's explaination: v2 has lower power consumption = less heat generated, therefore smaller heatsinks are required which results in weight reduction]
- Much more ram (128MB vs 16MB). [more ram, good but can the device take advantage of it?].
- Reduced latancy (3 us vs 7us [@100mb], 2us vs 3us [@1000mb]). [doesn't seem that significant.]
- Increased throughput (38 million vs 35 million). [possibly significant.]
- Reduced current ... Read more

I'm waiting on the Interconnect kit, but I'm going to have two ProCurve 2910al's connected together with a 10GbE Interconnect Kit.

I've read over all the PDF's and haven't found the answer I'm looking for. From the software side of things do they just show up as another port? I need to create 802.1q trunk between the switches so I'm assuming I can just do it like I normally would but it will be on the new "Module/Interconnect Port".

Is this correct?

Answer:ProCurve 10GbE Interconnect.

you are correct. It shows up as another port and can be configured the same way as the existing uplink ports.

Hi All

At the centre of my network I have a HP 2900-24g (24gig ports + 2x stacking 10gbe ports) switch. A few weeks ago this switch failed and had to be replaced under support (and is now back in place again working fine).

Eventually, I have managed to fix the previously failed switch and as such now have 2x 2900-24g switches.

Im starting to consider stacking the pair together using the 10 gbe ports - these can be stacked and managed from a single IP - however.. my query is this:

Im in the process of starting to use LACP / bonding dual Gb network connections from our servers, however it seems a little pointless to run both connections to a single switch.

If i stack both the 2900's together, can I still run LACP across the pair of stacked switches??

thanks for any help! I just wanted to check before I go out an buy a 10gbe module for the 2nd 2900.

I'm working on HP procurve switches for the first time and please bear with me. I'm trying to do port mirroring on the HP switches. The reason is I want to do packet sniffing for packets bound for the HP-UX server we have. And here's how the port mirroring will go. That is.

port 1 mirrored to port 10
port 2 mirrored to port 11.

In the following instances, all frame received or sent (ie. inbound or outbound) will be mirrored to port 10. How do I go about doing it? Reading up on HP user manual and surfing the HP support forum didnt help much. I read somewhere that there's a limitation such that the hardware only supports ingress (inbound) traffic. Can anyone confirm this?

ps: dont tell me to use a hub. I am looking for a solution not a work around

Answer:HP procurve 5300xl mirroring

im just throwing this out there (FYI) it may not apply to you (i don't know the architechure of the hp switches (are they foundry based?)

if you're doing port mirroring, you generally can only do 1 port mirror PER OCTAPID.

depending on the architecture, and most likely if they are 10/100 ports, that those 2 ports (right next to each other) share the same octapid

therefore, you may only be able to enable one port mirror at a time (or move one of the connectinos into another octapid (for 10/100 ports, usually 8ports per octapid (ports 1-8, 9-16, etc)

this info may not apply to you but just in case ....

Hello there,
Recently I bought a HP procurve 1810-8G to go with my HP procurve 1810-24G.
The idea is simple the 1810-8G is on the ground level next to my router. and the 1810-24G is in the basement next to the servers.
I have 2 CAT6A cables connecting the switches.

First I tried it without changing any setting (you never know)
This created a loop and overloaded the entire network
so no luck on the easy approach, then I decided to trunk them.
I set up a trunk on both 1810's, and assigned the right ports.

But for some reason even though the ports where showing up as connected I could not get the trunk activated.

I had it set up as a dynamic trunk type, but since then I think I tried every single trunk combo.

I know that harforum recommends the 1810 series so I though id just ask here and see If someone could help me on this.
All questions are welcome.
I'm sure there you need a lot more info then what I just gave you, so just ask and I'll let you know.

PS:
There is no such thing as a obvious/ stupid question.
If you want to be sure I didn’t to something noobish just ask.

Answer:HP procurve 1810-XXG trunking

I am not too familiar with HP procurves, but trunking is trunking. Are you attempting to trunk with one connection, ie...Cat5 from one switch to the other? Or are you attempting to trunk via two Cat5 connections between the devices? Anytime you have more than one connection from one switch to another, STP will kick in and block one interface to prevent layer 2 loops. This is a good thing. If you have an unmanaged switch, well then you are SOL..haha

Start off with the simplest of configs. Connect one Cat5 to the switch and the other end to the other switch. I wouldnt use Dynamic trunking...setup the parameters on your own so you can tweek setting if need be. Each interface will need to be configured as a trunk and Dot1.q encapsulation turned on, if its not by default after commiting the ports as a trunk. Your trunk link should be up at this point, provided HP doesn't require some weird setting that I am not aware of. If you want another trunking interface between the two for redundancy and or bandwidth aggregation, then you need to logically combine the interfaces in use via LACP. This way here STP will not see these combined interfaces as a layer 2 loop. That will take a lot more configuration to get working. I hope I understood your question correctly and answered in a way that will help you out.

Evening:

I'm tackling a new client and I'm on the fence regarding equipment. I normally deploy Procurve equipment if the client has 20 or more employees. With smaller operations I usually opt for the Dell switches. However, I'm starting to wonder about the economics of my recommendations.

Most of my clients just need basic switches. A few use link aggregation and even fewer use VLANs. I can purchase two PowerConnect 2824 switches for the price of one Procurve 1810G-24. Obviously the choice is situation dependent (ie basic file sharing vs. enterprise data storage).

I like to deploy equipment that has room for growth down the road. You never know when a client decides to expand an office or has to incorporate a change in the network. They may not need VLAN or link aggregation support, but who knows in a year or two.

Is the 1810G-24 really worth the extra $200.00 per unit over the Dell switches? The Procurve has a lifetime warranty while the Dell has a one year warranty. The three year extension on the 2824 is only $59.00 so worse case it is $238.00 vs $380.00.

I look forward to seeing everyone's input. Thanks!

Answer:PowerConnect vs Procurve - On the Fence

Having been where you are I can say go with HP.

Small operations are mostly better served with the warranty , which is pretty hassle free with HP if you register your equipment.
I myself work for my own business with HP gear and even price wise there are smaller switches that could be more cost effective maybe.

Also contact HP about a reseller deal maybe , is what I did saves up to 25% per device for me.

I must honestly say in the last 5 years installed various brands (including dell and HP) and mostly the customer was happy with the HP equipment where most others, excluding cisco and a couple of others, have always come back with issues in the end.

Hi everyone,

I have a strange issue about the hp procurve 1810 24G (J9450A). When I connect my computer to one of the available ports of the switch I notice that I can't get network connection. The weeks before everything worked fine. When I look at the internet icon on the right bottom of my screen it keeps identifying.

Other computers connected to the switch have internet access. The computers that have internet access can not ping to the switch but it can ping to other hosts and outside like google.com

I could make it work again after pulling the power of the switch and waiting a couple of seconds. The pc's that didn't get internet connection are working now and I can reach the switch again.

Does anyone knows why this happens? This is not relyable for me and I would like to prevent such faults in the future.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Procurve 1810 24G (J9450A)

1) What kind of firewall do you have? (Does it limit the amount of devices that can pass through ti?)

2) Call HP procurve support, they are awesome and the switch should have a lifetime warranty. They will replace it no questions asked if the switch is the issue.

Does anybody have experiance with HP Procurves? I'm a Cisco guy, CCNP for 6 years, I can configure VLANs and layer 2 trunks in my sleep.

I have no experience on HP Procurves (3500, 2600, E5400). I just started a new job, and I need to learn how to manage these things.

Here is part of the VLAN config. Can anyone decipher this, and translate it into Cisco language? I'm having problems with the "tagged, untagged, TRK1" parts.

Also, on a Cisco switch, with a "show vlan", you can view the vlans and the ports they are assigned to. On the HPs, all they show is the the VLAN id's.

Answer:HP Procurve layer 2 trunks

Not a ton of HP experience here but IIRC a trunk is different in HP land then it is in Cisco. Trunks on an HP switch are the same as Etherchannel on a Cisco. Hopefully one of the resident HP guys will chime and help out a bit more.

So quick question regarding VLAN Trunks on ProCurve gear.

I have two 2910al's. I have multiple VLANs.
Some devices on VLAN10 will be on Switch #1.
Some devices on VLAN10 will be on Switch #2.
I need to route between VLAN's so IP ROUTING will be enabled and VLAN10 assiged an IP 10.1.10.254

I know I create a tagged port on both devices and assign VLAN10 to it. What I'm not clear on is assigning the IP address to the VLAN for routing purposes. Do I need to do this on both switches?

Cheers

Answer:HP ProCurve VLAN Routing

If I am correct thoose are layer 2 switches and not layer 3 so routing in any shape might not be able.

But someone please confirm this :S

But as I read it a simepl trunk should do the trick just fine and the switches will do the rest.

I've had this switch a few years & recently enabled vlan's.

I'd now like to do lacp+802.1q between the 1800-8G (not 1810) and a powerconnect 5324. On the PC side I think I have it setup right.

On the 1800-8G side, If I go to vlan configuration after seeting up a lacp of 2 ports, the option on any vlan is greyed out.

Anyone know how to actually configure this?

Answer:Procurve 1800-8G: Lacp+802.1q possible?

On google, search "procurve 1800 lacp".

Fourth link down is the management and setup guide (pdf) for the 1800-8G and -24G. Have you taken a look at it by chance? In there, it shows how to setup the LACP and 802.1q.

Within the last few months we have deployed about 50 units of these APs. After a few issues (AP radio getting shutdown, constant reboots) we upgraded to firmware 2.1.2. This seemed to fix a lot of those issues. It also came with a lot of fancy new features - including AP Detection. Within the past week out of the 50 APs I have around 6 that I can ping, but I can't get to the web interface or telnet, or ssh to. I go to the AP, get in through the console port - I can see station connected to it, but I can't ping the AP that I am currently in. So, I reboot it, and everything seems ok.

What I was wondering is does anyone else use these units? Have you come across the same issue - it SEEMS to be working, but I can't get to any management portion of it (web, telnet, etc). Could the AP Detection be hogging a lot of memory when it runs? Any help or ideas is appreciated !

Answer:HP ProCurve 420 Access Point

If they have just been deployed, then they're probably under warranty. Call HP and talk to them. For most of the networking stuff you'll get someone in North America. Or call the company you got them from. Hopefully they are HP certified on them and can get the VAR support for more info.

I need to clear my head a bit, things are so busy at work I am having trouble sorting out a simple routing issue.

I have a Cisco ASA 5515-x, setup as my router with a split-tunnel SSL VPN for remote users.. It works great, except when connected via VPN I can only access the same subnet the ASA and HP switch reside on. My VLANs provided via my core HP 5406zl L3 switch are inaccessible. This must just be a simple routing issue, but between Cisco and HP I can not wrap my head around it.

Comcast---> Cisco ASA (VPN) 10.20.28.1 ---> HP (vlans)-----> VLAN 1 10.20.28.254 (Works fine over VPN), VLAN 45 -10.20.45.254 (No access over vpn), VLAN 99- 10.20.99.254 (No access over vpn)

Intervlan routing works great, I can access VLAN 99 from VLAN 1 and vise-versa. I have a route on the HP switch for 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.20.28.1 for internet access. On the Cisco I have a static route of 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.20.28.254. I believe my issue is that the HP requires your default gateway to be your VLAN IP for the intervlan routing to work. With my split tunnel SSL VPN, I do not believe it uses the correct routes.

My question is: Where and what routes do I need to add so that I can access the other VLANs when connected via VPN?

I have a test environment setup and I am going to start testing by disabling split tun... Read more

Hey all,

I'm trying to do something which I am uncertain whether or not I can.

Background:
I have a 24 port HP ProCurve 1810G.

Two of the ports (1 & 2) are a member of an uplink trunk to a smaller switch elsewhere in the house, using LACP.

4 of the ports (21-24) are a member of a 4 port "route over IP hash" trunk that connects to my ESXi box.

What I want to do:

Two ports (17&18) are connected to devices I would like to not be visible to any other port on the switch, EXCEPT trunk2 (ports 21-24) as there is a server on the ESXi box they need to communicate with.

This much I can accomplish.

The problem is, I also need the 4 members of that trunk to be visible to the rest of the switch, or else the rest of my clients lose access to the servers on the ESXi box.

So, essentially:

- Ports 17 and 18 need to be visible to trunk2 (ports 21-24)
- Ports 1-16 and 19-20 need to be visible to trunk 2 (ports 21-24)
- Ports 17 and 18 can not be visible to ports 1-16 and 19-20

Is this possible at all?

I read that Cisco switches can do this, as trunks can forward VLAN tags to other switches. Can my ProCurve switch do it to? If so, How?

I'm getting royally confused by the letters assigned to each port in the VLAN configuration screen (U, T, E, etc.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Matt

Answer:ProCurve VLAN Setup Help

T is tagging a port for multiple VLANs. U is a port in a vlan. E is port excluded from vlan.

what port goes to the router to route between all these vlan?

looks like you want two vlans. one for ports 17,18,21-24 and then vlan for 1-16 and 19,20.

Welcome to the world of VLANs where every company call it something different
Procurve can foward vlan info to other switches. mark the port/trunk going to those switches as T so they carry all vlans. Also make sure the switch on other end supports vlans.

In the past for 48 port gig switches we've bought the HP 2810-48G. I'm used to the OS and etc so I've become accustomed to them. I need to buy a couple more switches for a new building that some offices will be moving to.

RIght now I'm looking at a few different models to compare to the 2810's. The HP E2510-48G looks pretty good for 1500.00 dollars as opposed to the 2400.00 dollars for the 2810's. The specs for the two are damn near identical but the price is very different. Anyone have any experiences with the 2510's and 2810's? What differences if any does the OS's have? Based on hardware similaritites I'm going to assume the 2510's have a "lower end" version of the Procurve OS?

Also anyone used the newer 3COM models? The hardware specs are very good on those at a much lower price point.

Basically all I need is gig speeds, VLAN / Trunking support. These switches will have desktops, printers, servers and etc plugged into them. No SAN equipment or anything like that will be used on these.

Answer:HP Procurve Model Question

I run a few 2510-48G's and haven't noticed any deficiencies, we're adding them as we need to expand on the current dozen-or-so 2650's . Then again, the only features we use are LACP trunking, VLANing and STP.

Hi,

I am trying to implement vlans but not seem to get it working. I hope that someone can help me with this step by step. I will now write down how I think it will work. But it doesn't.

I have the private ip address 192.168.0.1/24 for the router. I have a procurve 1910 24 ports (je006a).

First I go to the menu on the left side of the 1910 and select 'Network - IPV4 Routing and Create' Here I enter as Destination IP Adress 0.0.0.0, Mask 0.0.0.0 and Next hop 192.168.0.1 and as Preference I take 10. Now I click on Aply and I see I have the route when selecting Summary.

Now I make some vlans by selecting Vlan under the 'Network' tab. I select 'Create' and fill in 2-3 for making three vlans (default included). I give them the name public and private.

After doing that I assign the vlans to some ports. For example ports 9-16 in vlan 2 (public) and ports 17-24 in vlan 3 (privat). After I select the ports and type 9-16 in the field (Vlan IDs). Because I want to connect some pc's and servers I chose for Untagged membership. When I select 'Apply' I see a popup that says that the ports are changed to Hybrid. Ok I gues.

What I do then is selecting 'Vlan Interface' also under Network tab. I click on create and type these information in the open fields:
First
Vlan ID: 2 (for public)
Select Manual
Ipv4 Address: 192.168.2.1
Mask Length: 255.255.255.0
Apply

Second
Vlan ID: 3 (privat)
Select Manual

We received three Netgear gbit switches and the first time I've dealt with a web interface. They're nice switches but one thing I noticed is that you cannot change the default VLAN on the IP management interface. The only workaround I did was changing the native VLAN from 1 to xxx on the Cisco switch it's trunked to. Now we're looking at returning these switches and getting switches where you can change the VLAN on the IP management interface - and my question is, can you do that with the 1800-24g?

Answer:Procurve 1800-24G Question

Juuuuust out of curiosity, what Netgear switches did you have? GS724T or a variant? Cause you can change the default VLAN with that switch (I own two).

But to answer your question, you can on the HP too.

I 'm planning on using a switch similar to this instead for my new house with all the rooms wired in.

Is this a reliable switch? The one review posted online complains about it not supporting STP protocol, another user at Tom's complained he couldn't make link aggregation work.

Any comments?

Answer:HP procurve 1810G-24 Any opinions?

I am currently using this switch for two customers as a top of the rack switch. So far no issues even under load. I do wish that there was another management interface instead of web only, however the web interface is more robust then most so I guess that's a plus.

Not to mention they are HP and the lifetime warranty is excellent.

Howdy,

I've replaced my almost-dead ProCurve 2824 with a ProCurve 1810-24G v2. Prior to the swap, my NetGear JGS516PE, which acts as my secondary switch for my PoE cameras along with aggregating drops from the rest of the house, was tied up the 2824 via a static trunk and worked flawlessly (I had two ports in a single LAG membership on the NetGear itself).

Now, however, I am having all sorts of problems. I've setup two ports on the ProCurve as static trunks, connected the NetGear to it and - if I have STP/RTSP disabled, it sorta-kinda works but I see some serious traffic collisions from the rest of my devices. For example - my main desktop can hit other network resources about half the time; file transfer speeds are complete shyte and web surfing is a hit-or-miss.

If I enable STP/RSTP, every port goes solid on its link activity LED and nothing can communicate.

Any ideas on how to resolve this and get LAG to work properly again?

Thanks!

So I've attempted to contact HP pre-sales (we are an HP partner) and after 5 idiots that don't know their products, they transferred me to another team which turned out to be fucking CDW in the wrong country. Pretty typical of my experience with HP if you ever need to ask a question more technical than "what is a computer".

I'm trying to determine what switches in the Procurve lineup will do Inter-VLAN routing on the same switch. Assume a basic 1 switch network.

I've determined that Procurve "Layer 3 Lite" will do static routing but not dynamic routing. So I would assume their Layer 2 switches do absolutely no routing. However I have a 2520 in front of me that HP claims is Layer 2 only yet I can route between VLAN's on that switch.

So where is the designation? What switches in their lineup can do just plain old Inter-VLAN routing for directly connected networks and what can't? Will their bottom of the barrel 1810-24G do Inter-VLAN routing?

Answer:Procurve Lineup Routing Confusion

The 1810 won't do routing, no.

We have Procurve switches hooked up to Aerohive wireless access points. We are a school so there are multiple access points per switch.

I know best practice is to make the AP port a trunk port. My question is, on the switches, a trunk would be an arbitrary group 1-50 or whatever it can handle. Do I make all the ports in one trunk group? Do I break them up into individual trunk groups? How does this all work?

Answer:Procurve Trunk Ports for Wireless

You are confusing Cisco trunks or "tagged" ports in HP terminology.

Each AP should be on a port tagged with the appropriate wireless VLANs.

I refer to trunking in Cisco terms or HP's tagging.

I'm just starting to get a little bit deeper into our switched network, so please bear with my ignorance. I've got a Procurve switch in one building and a Cisco IOS Switch in another. Both switches are one network configured on the native vlan 1, talking to each other over a fiber access port. I'd like to create a second vlan for another network on the HP switch and extend it to the Cisco. I'd like to run this config process by you guys in case something about this won't work.

Procurve: What I'm trying to do here is establish a tagged port and put vlan 1 and 122 on it. Also create vlan 122 and assign some ports to it.

vlan 1
tagged 45 (current access port, make it the trunk port)

vlan 122
name new_vlan (example)
untagged a,b,c (need three ports for new network)
tagged 45 (trunk between switches)
Cisco: Basically I'm trying to do the same thing here, but vlan 122 will require a couple more ports.

#create vlan
interface gig 0/a - d (vlan 122 network ports)
switchport
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 122
no shutdown
*** Do for all ports part of vlan 122

#trunk
Switch(config)#interface gig 0/x (the fiber trunk port)
Switch(config-int)#switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
Switch(config-int)#switchport trunk allowed vlan 1, 122
Switch(config-int)#switchport mode trunk

At this point I'm hoping to have achieved traffic flowing on the default vlan 1 again as well as v... Read more

Answer:Procurve to Cisco VLAN Trunking

On the HP side, if you want VLAN data to go to a Cisco trunked port....then just tag the VLANs, don't untag them on that port.

For instance, you have VLANs 80, 81, 82 and 83. On HP, tag those VLANs. On Cisco, you can either allow all by issuing the "switchport mode trunk" command or allow only certain ones by doing the "switchport trunk allowed ....." command.

Untagging a VLAN on the HP with set that vlan as the native vlan for that port, and then you can tag more if you wish it to send/receive more vlan traffic on that port.

Hello!
I'm gonna move around my network equipment in my small apartment, and also do some rewire. I came to the point where I need an additional switch to reduce excessive cable dragging.

Have done a lot of research and decided I want a HP or Dell switch.

My requirements:
Fanless design is a must (switch will stand in my bedroom)
8+ ports all gigabit speed
Should run 24/7 stable
Have to like being plugged into a Zywall USG-20

So it came down to these switches:

V1810G:
+ Not much more expensive than V1410G. Seems like a bargain actually.
+ Web managed
+ Only 15W
- People have complained about software quirks (NTP, DHCP.)

E2520-8G:
+ Much more manage options
+ Layer 2
+ PoE
+ Stability/durability maybe?
- Much more expensive but still not Cisco $$
- Draws more power

A possible option is also:

Dell Powerconnect 2808
+ Seems comparable performance wise to V1810G
+ Integrated PSU
+ More managable than V1810 (CLI etc)
- A bit higher price than V1810 here in Sweden
- Not as good warranty

Suggestions much appreciated.

For what it sounds like you need the 1810G series will do everything you want. For things like basic VLANs, jumbo frames, LAG/LACP, and being super reliable / having probably the best warranty I have ever seen for switches, you can't go wrong.

Hey everyone, this is a scenario I'm not too familiar with and it's been driving me slightly insane.

We have two publicly routable gateways attached to our A5500 switch that are expecting untagged traffic.

We currently have VLAN 10 as the untagged VLAN for Gateway 1, and VLAN30 as a tagged vlan for Gateway 2. Since both gateways are requiring untagged traffic, I need to make sure all ingress traffic from Gateway 2 gets tagged as VLAN30, while all egress traffic gets untagged.

The tricky part is they must come over the same port so I can't just tag it that way. I get the feeling this will require some static routes or VLAN Interfaces on the switch, but I'm not sure where to start. Is what I want even possible?

Thanks for any help you can give!

In a home setup involving Crestron home automation/AV control and Lutron lighting control, I'm trying to accomplish the following network segmentation w/ VLANs on an HP ProCurve 1810-24G v2 (but I'm not sure it can be done):

- Currently the network is not segmented and has no VLANs
- I'd like to have the Lutron able to "talk to" the Crestron, but otherwise isolated from the rest of the network
- I'd like for the Crestron to be able to still connect to the Internet and the rest of the network

As far as I can tell, this is very similar to the example given in this well-written guide, but using different hardware, and exchanging the VoIP in the example for my Lutron segmentation:

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-howto/30071-vlan-how-to-segmenting-a-small-lan

Is the SRW2008 Linksys switch referred to there doing Layer 3 vs. Layer 2 on the ProCurve, and therefore more capable of doing this? Basically, I'd like to have something like this:

VLAN 1: Default/management
VLAN 2: Data
VLAN 3: Lutron

Port 1: Management [VLAN 1 & 2]
Ports 2 – 19, 21, 23: Main data network [VLAN 2]
Port 20: Lutron controller [VLAN 3]
Port 22: Crestron [VLAN 2 & 3]
Port 24: Uplink to router (AirPort Extreme) [VLAN 1, 2, 3]

I've tried tagging thusly:

VLAN 1 [Default]-- Untagged: 1, 24; Tagged: 2-23
VLAN 2 [Data]-- Untagged: 2-19, 21, 23; Tagged: 1, 22, 24; Excluded: 20

The procurve can't do routing between VLAN's.

Maybe your router can, but I've never used an AirPort.

EDIT: It looks like AirPort routers don't even support VLANs, so it would appear you can't do any of the things you want to do. VLANS are out of the cards for you unless you get a better router.
