Black screen on start up-hp logo flashes on and off screen

Question: Black screen on start up-hp logo flashes on and off screen

My computer stopped connecting to wifi. I decided to do a system reset. Now the screen is black at start up and the hp logo just flashes on and off the screen. I tried the BIOS update and that did not work either. What else can I do before sending it in for repair. I just bought it last November.

Preferred Solution: Black screen on start up-hp logo flashes on and off screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The fan is whirring, it sounds like it reeeeally wants to start, but it just keeps flashing the hp logo screen, then a black screen with the cursor at the top left, and then complete black (screen off) This cycle repeats endlessly, and if I hit "ESC" to trigger the Startup Menu at the right time I get a few options, but the F-11 System Recovery doesn't work - just throws me back into the flashing screen cycle! If you can help me you will be my hero. If you can't help thank you for trying.  I don't know to function without my baby err computer..........

I have a HP Touchsmart 310 PC.  I have never had trouble with it before.  I was editing pictures on it and walked outside for a moment.  When I came back in the screen was blank.  Touched buttons and  it would not show anything.  I rebooted the computer and the logo shows for about a second and then the screen goes blank.  I can not get anything to come on the monitor.  THe computer still makes noises that it is running but nothing is on the screen.  I tried a few things in the support group I found as in unplugging the power cord and pushing buttons.  I have had no luck.  Can somebody please help me?

Answer:Start up Logo flashes on screen then goes blank

Hello Help__needed, You are stating when you turn your touchsmart on the logo flashes and the screen goes blank, is that correct? I will be happy to help you. Try another hard reset first: Remove all cables and including the power cord from the computerPress and hold the power button for 30 secondsInsert only the mouse, keyboard and power cord When you turn the computer back on immediately start tapping the F10 key, and that should lead you into a BIOS setup screen. Please respond back at your earliest convenience. Thanks

I can't tell exactly when this started as I have upgraded the NVIDIA drivers as well as the Dell bios and switched from running the onboard Intel HD 630 to GTX 750ti , but now on a cold boot, with the fast startup off, the screen flashes white for a sec after the Dell logo. It could possibly be white noise but I can't focus on it fast enough. It doesn't happen on restarts. I'm connected via hdmi out to a LG TV.
Dell XPS 8910 using the NVidia GTX 750ti and an HDMI TV as monitor Bios version is 1.1.0 ,1.1.0 Original version was 1.0.9, 1.0.9, can I revert back to 1.0.9 ?

Hi there,

My partner Tracys HP DV6 laptop is refusing to boot. The machine appears to power up as normal, the power, volume and wifi lights above the keyboard light up as does the 'on' light at the front left corner and the fan can be heard running but the screen remains blank with no flickers of anything and no sign of even a cursor. The caps lock/num lock* lights repeatedly give two blinks in time with each other.

* I say num lock light. I think this is what it's normally referred to although num lock is not the nearest button. It's at the top right hand corner of the screen next to the 'End/page up' buttons.
After a bit of googling I have tried doing the hard reset (switch off, remove battery and power cable, leave for 30s then hold down power button for 1 min before rebooting). I also tried connecting an external monitor via the vga socket and to a TV set via the HDMI output. None of these approaches have yielded any results. My googling has also revealed the two blinks from caps lock/num lock are the code for a BIOS corruption fault.

I found instructions for restoring the BIOS here...

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

I was going to follow the instructions there but wanted to check here first in case there was a more appropriate course of action I should take first.
Another thing is that there seems to be a lot of heat being blown out by the fan considering the machine appears not to be booting.
I'm no computer expert but a... Read more

Hi Mrlooper,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with black screen at the logo in your Lenovo G580 laptop.

Try to boot to BIOS nad check for the issue, also try to remove the HDD and check if the system boot to BIOS.

Note: if the system is under warranty do not remove the back panel.

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Recently, when I start my computer, the Asrock splash screen appears, followed by the pulsating windows logo. Once this is done, it moves on to a black screen with only the cursor visible. The cursor is movable but no key commands seem to do anything. Eventually the desktop appears but it can take up to two minutes and seems to be getting longer every time. I was also looking at my event log and found this entry: "The Religious Religion service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified." I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject but "The Religious Religion service" sounds a lot like a virus. I'm not sure if these two things are connected, and an AV scan has turned up negative. Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

I have Win7 Ultimate x64 installed on an brand new HP Pavilion s5-1205z Slimline desktop.

When I am reading an email or document the screen will just suddenly flash to a black screen for a second. Sometimes it does this several times in a row, and other times just once or twice. It is random and does not matter what program I am in, if I am browsing, playing a video on-line, or typing. I have installed Java and done as much troubleshooting as I can and can't find anything that relates to that kind of behavior at all in the Help Files or FAQ's.

Any suggestions of where I might look to see if I need to check or uncheck something, and what, would be very much appreciated.

Answer:PC screen suddenly flashes to a black screen and back

Combining the info that you posted here with the info in this thread - I gotta wonder if someone is able to remote into your computer. If you are not too far along in setting up your computer, you might want to consider a clean install without all of the bloatware.

Unless you have a specific need for Java - uninstall it. If you need it, then it might be worth the security risk of having it installed. If you don't need it - then why risk having it installed?

Hey,

I just built a new computer and I'm fairly certain all the components are compatible with each other, but I've never built a computer before.

All the components are brand new and anyway I built it, the first time I booted it; it ran my windows disc but it was scratched up so I went to clean it. Upon using the computer again, it kept saying 'BootMgr is missing, press ctrl-alt-delete to restart' - now this didn't change upon using or not using my windows disc and I could not enter bios screen.

I'm not using a usb keyboard - using one of those ones with the purple adapter.

Anyway I thought I may have plugged the sata cables into the hdd and optical drivers wrongly and have changed them about multiple times as well as removing the CMOS battery and tried clear the CMOS by touching the two pins.

All I get now is my screen flashes a quick image of the initial load screen and then straight to a black screen, everything in my PC seems to be running fine. Plus I've tried it with and without my graphics card and I get same issue.

What can I do?

Thanks,
BC

Answer:New build - flashes load screen then black screen

Hi BC welcome to Techspot,

Firstly the "purple adapter" is a PS2 conenction.

There are many reasons as to why this error may occur and how to to sovle this issues but it sounds like you have tried to start a windows installaiton and becasue the disc was scratched it hasn't completed the it hence it comes up with the error "BootMgr mssing". The best solution here I think would be for you to get another Windows disc and try re-installing windows.

to get into the BIOS remove the windows disc from your PC and restart. when the PC is laoding up hit the F2 key and this should allow you to load the BIOS.
I wrote this thread if thsi is any help

hope this helps

I have tried all the fixes F10, wait then F5, wait then Enter, then F10. Does not fix problem. Tried the F8 but since I can not see anything after the brief HP Logo screen flash - this does not work I have removed the hard drive, CD drive, and memory and tried to get the BIOS to come up.  I got beeps so I had to install one memory module back.  I tried it with each of them by themselves and that did not bring it up.  I tried a USB keyboard to eliminate the wireless keyboard and that did not make a difference, even tried to boot with no keyboard as well. I can hit CTRL ALT DEL and duplicate the HP Logo flash over and over with the wireless and USB keyboards so know the monitor is functional.  What I do not know is why it turns off at that point.  There has to be a BIOS issue that HP needs to address because I have read about this happening on other TouchSmart platforms from the PC to the laptops. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong?  Do I need to take the mother board out and re-solder the GPU with a rework hot air soldering station?  I might just do that on my own, it cant hurt. Paul

Hi

According your informations may I ask you if you have connected an external monitor? So theoretically you should see a picture on it.

If the external monitor works you can order a new internal monitor from an authorized service provider. On the Toshiba website you can find a list of them.

Hello,

I am encountering an issue of when the Dell optiplex 755 boots up, it boots through the Windows XP logo just fine, once it tries to transition between the logo and loading the system up, it just shows a black screen and nothing else happens. I tried using a bootable Windows XP flash drive to repair the system files and it loads the Windows XP setup ok but when it runs through all of the commands on the bottom of the screen and the last one says "Starting Windows" , it takes me to a blue screen (screenshot below). I have HIRENS and have done a lot of the chkdsk commands to fix the files and everything comes back ok. I tried to clone the hard drive with the same exact hard drive and still the same issue. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

Okay, So I have been busy trying to get my old laptop started up again.
When I start it up, it does the usual stuff, it shows the logo. But then a blue screen flashes before my eyes. And it restarts again.

Now, I have gone through multiple things to try and fix the problem, but I just can't seem to resolve it.
I have tried safe mode but the same thing occurs. [blue screen]
Then I tried to start up the laptop with the f8 option called "start up using settings from last succesful startup" (Roughly translated out of Dutch)
but this also failed and the same thing happens. Then I tried to go to the "recover your computer" option, of which I still remember that from there you can set back your laptop or pc to the factory settings, something that I wouldn't mind because I just want the laptop to start. I don't care if I can recover the files that used to be on it. This also fails, but this one is a bit strange, because when I select the "recover your computer" option it goes to a normal windows screen, no text shows up or anything. Just my cursor and a nice shiny loading background screen of windows. It feels like I have tried everything and I've looked at other posts on the site but I just can't seem to fix it, mostly because I cannot set the laptop back to factory settings, because of the shiny blue loading screen without text, which is all I want.

I figured out how read the blue screen that flashes up (not the shiny loading screen) so here it i... Read more

This is driving me crazy.

Right after I boot my laptop, the screen flashes randomly.

Also something is stealing focus from what I am working on to something else.

Then it likes to suddenly go to a grey screen. I have to manually reboot.

If that is not enough, it like to just reboot.

Scanned with my AVG and Kaspersky, nothing found. Tried TrendMicro House Call, nothing. Dr. Web, nothing.

All drivers are up to date.

I have run it in the safe mode for about an hour with no problems. No new software installed recently. I went to restore and it was only dated from the previous day, so no help there.

I would prefer not to Nuke and pave, but if that what I need to do, I can.

Any thoughts, theories, explosives you can recommend for this?

I await with enlarging piles of hair as I pull it out.
Roger

Ok it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me because I lost them a very long time ago. Is there anything I can do to fix my computer? Thanks.

Good Morning,

For the past several months I have been having problems with my HP desktop computer. When my system reboots I sometimes get a black screen with nothing on it or it gets stuck on the windows logo or I get a blue screen with a bunch of writing.

The blue screen tends to happen with the computer goes into hibernation. So I changed my settings to that it doesn't happen but I would like to fix that so that I can give my computer a rest during the time that I'm not using it.

I have checked for malware, viruses you name it... nothing.

The best way to do this is to simply turn it off; it will also save on the electricty bills too.
When I am not using my machine, I turn it off, because here in South Australia we have the second highest electricity charges in the world.

Can you tell us what the blue screen says; usually this is due to a recent hardware or software change; however, in your instance it might be the Hibernation feature that is malfunctioning.
Post back with the information about the blue screen, please.

Hey, need some help yet again!

Yesterday, I downloaded Mission Against Terror (New MMOFPS), and I downloaded it. Upon updating with the patcher, my laptop went haywire. It started opening up random IE windows, slow speed, etc etc.

I did a whole memory scan, and a malware/adware/spyware scan. There were several viruses and whatnot, but what is important are the files: SVC2.exe and 2008.exe, you'll find it why later on. The anti-virus said that it had fixed/deleted everything.

So, I restarted my laptop, hoping that I'd get it up and running in safe mode for any further scans. Unfortunately, when I restarted it, after the windows 7 loading screen (which is right before login screen), a black screen appeared. With nothing at all. Not even a cursor. BLACK. JUST BLACK with NO keyboard access/mouse access. But, that's expected since it's BEFORE the login screen. It's the same with normal boot, boot that does that "last best used option" or whatever, safe mode, with networking, etc etc. All the same. Black screen.

Good thing I had WIN XP on my other hard drive. So, I booted up into WIN XP (where I'm posting this from), and did a FULL (NOT QUICK) system scan, to find the SAME Viruses YET AGAIN: SVC2.exe and 2008.exe, along with some other minor tracking cookies and what-not. Win XP (on second drive) is also having a few problems, like IE shutting down every second (using firefox now). Think this is a whole system prob. But, why? Didn't the antivirus-es fix it? I... I have a relatively good PC but I do not think it is a hardware problem. So when I turn on my computer the HP logo shows up in normal timing (so is this not a BIOS problem), it sits on the HP logo for about 3-5 minutes, screen goes black for about 15 minutes, HP logo comes back for about 2 minutes then I get an orange windows 10 colour theme saying "Please wait" and the lock screen comes up ready to log in, after this everything is normal, basically its very slowing getting to the lock screen.

A few specifics i've noticed, my mouse has LEDs this turns on and off about 4 times around the second HP logo appearance. The lock screen is usually synced to my laptops lock screen, and it changes reguraly however it is not anymore and does not change either, its a picture of a Medevil Iron Helmet (which is quite spooky, I havent bothered to change it or see if this is a picture from Microsoft).

Yesterday I was also about to do a safe-mode boot but the computer turned off, I did however leave my computer untouched for at least 5 minutes but it wasn't a shutting down screen it just turned off. I also doubt it is to do with cooling as I can still play games without any problems.

UPDATE: In my start-up processes there is a file name called Program, no publisher, start-up impact isn't measured but it is enabled, when I right click I can only Disable it or search online. How can I find its file location so I can remove it?

Rather than delete can I suggest a rename.

Further if you think this "malware" I would be scanning with tools and letting them address. MalwareBytes is one recommendation. You can look in the AntiVirus section for others.

I would also run a chkdsk on the drive with no repair parameters to see if it notes anything. Finally as a test I would disable Fast Startup.

I am experiencing problems with my HP pavillion a1220n.
It is running Windows XP service pack 3.

I also use;
- Avast Home Edition, updated daily and run weekly,
- Zone Alarm; auto-updated with prompts for all internet activity;
- and Spybot Search and Destroy, which I run at the begining of each month or when unexplained activity warrants it

I have two external drives. (380G and 180G)
I have 3328 MB DDR2 SDRAM installed (3+ gigs)

The Preface:
On Saturday, I installed three freeware programs;

I downloaded and saved each executable, then scanned each with SpyBot S&D, and also Avast! - no problems were detected.

Before I restarted properly, a circuit breaker was tripped due to an installation of a ceiling fan in another room. (Does this serve to complicate the diagnosis?)

The Mistakes:
- I did not back-up before installation - my last backup was in March, using Acronis Home Image 10, to an external USB drive.

Model: Compaq Mini 110c-1000 (Netbook/No CD Drives)
OS: Windows XP Home Edition (Unsure of service packs)
Last Known Working Date: Last week of March 2011
Hi. I have been browsing this forum for a long time. I usually find my answers from other member questions but today is different ): I have a netbook that belongs to someone I know and he does a lot of homework and facebooking on it. The information I listed is all I could get out of him. He does not have a virus scanner (sad face) and probably has like 20 spyware installed from allowing his other friends use it.

The screen loads up the Compaq and below it says press F9 or F10 for Bio setup. I can provide a video of this tomorrow when I get the camcorder. It goes on to the next screen which is a blank black screen. It will stays there forever (I had only checked for 20 minutes)

The Netbook doesn't have a CD drive so I couldn't try the other methods that I have read on here :x It only has a few USB ports.

Is there a way to restore the computer to an earlier time from using the F9/F10 menu? I would appreciate it if you guys can help. If the Netbook can be fixed, I will install the security for him (: Oh and thank you everyone in this community for helping me over the years lol. I know it is long overdue :x

Answer:Black screen after Compaq logo screen

Hi Amilius,

I recommend booting the computer into Safe Mode and see if the computer boots to Safe Mode. Turn on the computer and immediately keep on tapping the F8 until the Safe Mode Menu comes up. Then when the Safe Mode Menu comes up choose "Safe Mode w/ Networking" and hopefully the computer will boot into safe mode. Afterwards, I recommend downloading and installing "Malwarebytes" on the computer. Scan the computer for viruses/spywares using Malwarebytes, pretty good program.

My computer screen goes black when you unplug it, but the power light remains on and the fan continues to run.It also goes black after the HP logo runs if I try to start up on battery power only. When it's plugged in it's fine, usually, but sometimes it will randomly go off like it does when I unplug it.The battery has been replaced and didn't fix anything.I went throught the whole BIOS thing, didn't help. When it goes into this black screen, there is nothing you can do to get it back on except holding the power button down until it shuts off and then restarting. Thanks for your time.

Dell N5030: W7 wont start. Dell logo > black screen. How to restore?

Hello friends

Please could you advise me. My friend has asked me to help with her Dell N5030 Inspiron laptop. She has had it for about just over a year now. Dual-core Pentium, 4GB RAM, W7 64bit. She is not computer savvy and I dont know how shes managed to do this but heres the problem:

1. You press the power button
2. The Dell logo appears along with the F2 & F12 options for Setup & Boot Options
3. This is followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left. Thats it.

All this happens in the space of 6 seconds (power-up to black screen). Nothing else happens, no Windows logo screen, no Microsoft logo, nothing. Screen stays black with the cursor and the laptop instantly turns off when I press the power button.

My friend was desperate because she had over 740 family photos and some important documents she didnt want to lose. I was able to recover all of those using a Linux Mint live CD so at least shes all smiles for that

Using Mint made me realize that the hardware was working perfectly. The hard drive was good, no mem faults and of course the optical drive was fine. So its something with Windows 7.

Also while using Mint I could clearly see the Dell Recovery Partition. The problem is I dont know how to get the Inspiron to fire it up - because I cannot even get into Safe Mode where the "Repair your computer" option is.

Hey guys, a week ago I bought a new PC. But since yesterday the screen has been randomly flashing black for a second or two then returning to normal. At first I thought this was because of my monitor and DVI cable as they are quite old, but if it's been working for a week without issues would it be the cable so suddenly? I also tried a reboot into safe mode and uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling my drivers but that didn't solve the issue. I have a GTX 1050 if that's any help. All help very much appreciated, thanks.

Hello guys, I'm needing to know how to fix my brand new laptop screen, every now and then it will flash black. I don't know why it's been doing this bc it's brand new, taking care of, never been dropped and banged. Is this normal for Dells windows 8.1? Here's my CPU-Z Validator 4.0 if you need it, I don't know any other way to present my specs.

Answer:Screen flashes black every now and then???

Don't mess around with it. It's brand new and should be working with no problems. Take back to the store.

I am using Windows 7 home premium and Google Chrome. When I use Facebook or am looking at the local news (all of them) sometimes the page flashes black, in part or in whole, and then flashes back to the proper page. This happens rapidly. Sometimes it happens 5 or 6 time and then stops and other times it continues flashing and won't stop. Once in awhile the screen will stay all black and I will have to close my browser and start over. I am guessing that it has something to do with a video player such as Flashtime or Quicktime, but that is only a guess on my part. Sometimes the reload/refresh button is refreshing and other times not. have never had an error code. I can't remember for sure but I may have done an Adobe update recently?
Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated.

Answer:Screen flashes to black off and on

Is this at Face Book site or at some links from Face Book?

This flashing can be the result of some of the graphics and video being loaded and displayed.
It most likely has to with some ad that is using some add in that we (you, I and others) do not have on our system(s).

hey all... i have an emachines m5105 laptop. i just reinstalled windows xp professional on it, went through the whole process, everything was fine. i installed windows updates, all the emachines drivers, then aol messenger, a couple of simple programs, then adobe dreamweaver, reader, the google toolbar and microsoft office (in that order). by the time i was done, the laptop screen flashes to an almost black screen, on and off, constantly. i uninstalled office and dreamweaver, since that was not happening before i installed those programs, but i'm still having the same problem. anyone have any idea what may be going on?

Answer:screen flashes black on and off

I usually go through a process of elimination with problems like these. First you will want to use the msconfig.exe utility to disable all non Windows startup services and apps. Then reboot your computer and start enabling the programs one a time rebooting each time until you find the problem.

Hi...I have searched for two days on your website and had no luck. I have an HP laptop:

Model G61 429WM
Windows 7 OS
BIOS Version: F.13
Processor Type: AMD Sempron M120
Processor Speed: 2100 MHz
Total Memory: 3072 MB

Only thing I can do is hit ESC when HP logo appears. It takes me to a start up menu...I done an F2, System Diagnostics, and ran tests:

Start-up test..it failed and short DST failed.
Run-In test...fail and short DST failed.
Hard disk 1 test failed
Memory test passed

When I exit the System Diagnostics it goes to a black screen and I have to restart...hit ESC on HP screen again to get to start menu again...I hit F11 for system recovery...a screen came up saying "windows is loading file" A new screen comes up saying windows is loading and the winpdows logo appears...it then goes to a blue screen, it isn't a solid blue screen, it goes from light blue at the top to a dark blue at the bottom...it looks like sun rays coming down from the top. The cursor is a big white arrow and I can move it but that's all except restart and to back to start menu. If I don't hit the ESC button it just goes to a black screen and if I hit the enter button to continue start up it goes to a black screen also.

It's been a while since this problem occurred. I haven't had time to try work on it but it seems like the last thing I did on it was to download some pictures from my digital camera.

I don't know what to do. Can someone please help me? It w... Read more

As the thread title says, my lenovo t400's screen recently started flashing. It wasn't that bad at first but it increased in frequency and started to be very annoying. I noticed changing from battery to cable would temporarily stop it, also turning down the brightness helped. However the problem started getting worse and now when I am forced to have it on the lowest brightness settings. If I turn it up it starts flashing erratic and then the screen turns off. The system itself keeps working though and if I turn the laptop off or in sleep mode and then turn it on again the screen "works" again (still with flashing). Ofcourse if I left the brightness above its lowest level it will instantly go black again. Also most likely related, half of the screen (left side) has taken on an "redish" collor. What could be the problem and is it something I can fix myself?

Answer:t400 screen flashes then goes black

If you were to boot into to the BIOS, does the left side of the screen show "redish" color?Try moving your LCD panel back and forth, does it stop it?Could be caused by faulty LCD cable or faulty LCD Panel. Also try plugging it with an external monitor to confirm if its caused by faulty SBO.Thanks

When the computer has been in use for a while, sometimes the screens (double screen setup) start to flash black screen iregularly.
Suspect that it starts when the computer gets warm or working with multible applications. But there is no regularity in when it happens.

Sometimes it stops after 5-10 flashes.
Other times it continues.
Sometimes it comes very fast after booting, and sometimes it doesn't come at all.

I can make it stop by turning of or putting the computer in stand by for a few minuttes.

What causes this problem?
NB: I have NOT installed new videocards, drivers or anything like this recently?
I did not know if this was a hardware or XP topic.

In the past few weeks, my computer has been playing up... the screen will go black for a second or two at random intervals (most frequently after first logging in) and will occasionally restart the computer completely when this happens.

It is definitely not a problem with the screen itself, and I doubt it's a power surge problem, because even when the screen goes black, the little on/off lights stay on the screen and my speaker system, and they're all plugged in at the same point.

Any ideas? I've got no clue where to even start to fix this!

While on line, a black box flashes on my screen. It happens so fast and unexpectedly that I cannot catch a word. It is all blank except the top looks like it may be a Notepad or Wordpad window but not sure. It happens about every 4 or5 minutes and is becoming very annoying. I use Windows 98 se. I use Firefox brouser. I have run all of my scans, both window and Norton scans but can't find the problem. Would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Sounds like a command window. Indicates that a low-level process is excuting, ... might be a folder being emptied, trash being cleared, something like that. We can't know what you've got set to run.

Can you think of ANYTHING that you have set to run automatically every five minutes or so? If you can figure out what this thing is that runs every five minutes, we can help you stop it.

My computer is running xp... as you go along it flashes black and freezes then it flashes black and un freezes... so you can continue with the work you are doing but it is very annoying ... could the mouse be the problem though as I am typing it is flashing... If I steam a game I can watch the game with no problem... baskeball game or listen to a brodcast... just if I am working on the key board or with the mouse.

Answer:screen flashes black and freezes...

first thing to check is to make sure the mouse/keyboard cords are not tangled with the monitor cable. I had something similar once when the monitor cable was not securely connected and my mouse cord got tangled with it.

If that does not help, check all the cables and make sure all cards are plugged in properly.

Hi,  My problem is that the screen keeps flashing black, just for a second, and then coming right back. It's not really a problem, but it seems like it's happening with increasing frequency.  The computer is fairly new--less than 6 months old. It's connected to wifi most of the time, I run Opera as a browser, and have a Dropbox account I'm hooked into. I only have about 4gigs free on the hard drive, and the memory (as shown in the task manager) is usually around 85%. I work online, and do have a lot of tabs open at once, so the load can get heavy (that's why I switched to Opera, it was freezing up with Firefox's heavy load). Any insight would be appreciated--I just want to know it's not heading towards a crash! Or if it is, if ther's anything I can do about it. Thanks!

Good afternoon,
I will keep it short: In December my old laptop a DELL Inspiron (from 2013) running on Windows10 Home, suddenly received a Windows update and after it finished, when I logged on with my Microsoft account as per normal, then screen went black and started flashing.
In the end the computershop re-installed windows and since then this laptop has been working. But I have bought a new one, again an Inspiron with windows 10 Pro and have been using this for a week now. This morning, when I started it up.....it did an update and after I logged on.....the screen went black and flashing....Nothing I could do.....
What could be the cause of this? Is this windows providing me with the wrong updates? Some people have suggested it might be a non-compatible display driver which was installed, how can I avoid this happening again?
I have now re-installed windows again and all is working, but I don´t want to keep doing this....

Any advice gratefully accepted

The issue started yesterday, I had torun to the store. When I got back I moved the mouse and the screen went black. Turned the tower off and back on, it flashed the vista boot up screen then went black. However I know the computer was running because I heard skype log in. I fixed it by pressing f8 during the boot up screen.

Well the problem happened again this morning, woke up, moved the mouse, black screen. However this time f8 didn't help at all. I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix this. I have windows vista.

I cannot download hijack this it looks like some Arabic scroll. When I did it before it didn't look like
that unless it has changed. My problem is my email view is different. Boxes that used to be there to
check off are not. ATT says they did an update but I don't think it is that. I have run superantisoftware,
malwarebytes, hitman pro, and alarmzone. Nothing is showing up.
When I go to websites the screen changes to black then back to normal. I am even having to wait a
while for websites to load. I really think I have some type of virus that is evading all the removals.
Please can anyone help me go step by step to see what is wrong. I am scared it is going to crash or
someone is hacked in and getting my info.... This is in addition to last post.

Answer:Screen flashes black and then goes back to normal (dwm.exe)

Hi, try an in-place repair install, it's a very useful feature.
Precede it with this in case sthg has happened to your file system:

Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)
chkdsk C: /F
Make sure the result is clear or fixed.

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
- all/most associations will be unchanged
- all your programs will be left installed
- you will lose any custom fonts
- you will lose any customised system icons
- you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
- you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
- Windows.old will be created
- system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
- you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)

This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

Recommendation:
Before you perform this major repair procedure, do create a disk image.

Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to

So I got a new XPS 13 last week (late 2016 model - i7 kabylake, 16 gig ram, 512 ssd, Windows 10 Pro).
Nothing wrong for the first few days. Then I started noticing that, sometimes, the screen would flicker completely black for just less than a second, then back to normal. This happened maybe once in a while. I started researching this on the net, and trying to update my drivers, etc, but they're all up to date.
The black screen flickers have been happening more frequently in the past few days. Not 10 minutes ago, I had four black flickers in a row. 15 minutes before that, I had a new scare: there was a rapid black screen flicker with white lines in the right quadrant of the screen.
Initially I thought this was a driver or software issue. But I now suspect it's hardware related. I haven't dropped my laptop, there's been no damage done to it, nothing that hints at any trauma caused to the internal components.
I suspect the motherboard is faulty. But I'm open to suggestions on what to do. I suspect this is going to grow worse, as my experiences in the last hour hint at.
I am upset, considering this is a very expensive laptop and I've saved for ages just to be able to afford it. AGES.

Hi all! I'm really hoping some of the great folks here can help me with a small-ish issue I'm having. I probably won't use the right terms for some things, because I'm no techie, so bear with me! ;-)

So I bought a Nuvision 10.1" netbook. The model # is TM101W535L. It has Windows 8.1, and according to it, it's fully updated including all drivers.

As I'm using it, it sometimes flashes briefly to a black screen. It doesn't stay black - it goes back to normal after 1/2 to 1 second or so, and while it's black, it's not frozen. For example: If I'm typing and it goes black, I can keep typing, and what i type will be there when it goes back to normal. So the computer is functioning all the while, it's just the screen that is affected.

This happens the most when I'm trying to watch a video. YouTube, Facebook, anywhere else, and all kinds of videos. It flashes faster and stays black longer, and it's impossible to see what's going on in the video.

It also flashes this way when I'm not watching videos, but less frequently and for shorter times. It's not the end of the world, but it is getting kind of annoying, and it's much harder to work when the screen keeps flashing.

I've reached out to Nuvision CS, and they responded, but only to ask me what kind of video files, and if it happened on all video types. I answered them 4 days ago, and I haven't heard back, so I thought I'd try to solve the problem on my own, which is why I'm here asking you wonderful p... Read more

Safe Mode uses a different graphics driver which if it is used and this problem doesn't persist it points to this being a driver issue.  So let's boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if the problem persists.

Open the Search charm and type msconfig in the search box.

msconfig will appear below the search box, click/tap on it, this will open System Configuration.

When System Configuration has opened click/tap on the Boot tab.

Click/tap on Safe boot and Network.

Click/tap on Apply, then OK.

Hello everyone,
I have a Gateway M460 laptop comp. that for a few days the lcd had a light brown shadow on the left side of the screen. Then yesterday when turning it on the screen flashed about 3 times then went black. If you get the room light on it just right you can still see some of what is on screen. Can someone please advise me on what could be the problem. It is out of warranty so any help would be great. My wife uses it for school and needs it real bad.

Thank you,
Joe

Answer:Gateway M460 screen flashes then black

Appears your inverter has gone bad. It is replaceable cheaply if you do it yourself.
The inverter is about the shape and size of a Sharpie pen and tests behind the screen at the bottom. It plugs in with plugs and sockets at each end. You need the exact inverter for that model, but can often find suppliers at ebay where you can get the part for $20 to $30. It is about $75 to $100 at Gateway.
Replacement requires removing the screw covers (little flat round or rectangle rubberized cosmetic covers put there for appearance), then using a very good hard steel philips screwdriver to remove about 18 screws. (Be careful to mark the screws and have a screw map for replacement as not all screws are the same size.) Once the screws are off, you lift off the screen, remove the old inverter and plug in the new one. Now all you have to do is put in the screws carefully, and you are done except for the screw covers. Screw covers are the toughest part. You will likely need a type of rubber cement that does not go hard with age.
DO NOT GET A USED INVERTER. BUY NEW ONLY.

Ok first of all my pc is originally windows 7 then 8.1 then 10 pro. I upgraded a day after the release.

Ever since the day of the release I have been having issues with a black flashing screen every once in a while sometimes a few times a day.

I will play a video on vlc media player or I will be watching a video online and all of a sudden the TV will flash a few time or it will just go black for like a minute.. And then it will come back to where it was.

And when I say TV I mean TV not a actual monitor. I have a 32" Emerson TV with 3 HDMI ports or hook ups. And I also have a VGA port as well. But I currently don't have a VGA Cord so I use my HDMI.

My pc also came with the HDMI it was not put in the pc but built in when I purchased it.

So I have not ad this problem before. And I read online at microsoft support forum that virus scanners can mess with the pc and make it flash. So I was told also by chatting with a support agent to remove all of the virus scanners that I had. And I did so I removed AVG as well as norton. I also read to remove the icloud but I could not find I cloud in the add/remove programs in the control panel and there was something else I was to stop running or remove and I did not have that ether.

So I remove my virus scanners. Plus I rolled back the drivers for my video card which I was also told to do by the support agent I was chatting with.

So now I don't know what to do.

Plus I also switched the port from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 and there's sti... Read more

Hey, my netbook's screen keeps on flashing for no reason. I cannot see my desktop and i have to press the power button to switch it off. The flashes sometime occur even when I start my computer. This started happening quite frequently after I downloaded AVG's 2011 free trial run. Even after i uninstalled it, the problem persists. The netbook was bought last year, in end of Jan. It is a Acer Aspire one running on windows xp. Any suggestions on how to improve it is gladly welcomed. :D

I replaced my old video card with a XFX Geforce MX4000 PCI and the screen flashes to black every minute or so. I'm running WinME on a Compaq Presario 5011CL with an Athlon 1.2. I needed a larger power supply for the new card, so I upgraded the power supply before installing the card. Here's what else I've tried:

- Refresh rate. I've tried everything. "Adapter default," "Optimal," 75hz, you name it, it doesn't help.

- I tried the card in a different PCI slot. I moved it to the "first" slot, the one closest to the cpu. No difference.

- I've uninstalled the nvidia drivers and re-installed. No difference.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Windows 7, FF, MSE and Malwarebytes. Since I used my laptop on battery recently then recharged it I have been having an intermittent problem. Clicking on some links or keyboard functions makes the document or dialogue box go black. This is only for a second or two then it reverts to normal.

I have no idea where to look for a solution or even if there is one. Is my laptop breaking down or is it a graphics problem? Can anyone help please?

Computer: Acer Aspire 4730Z

Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium

Problem: Screen flashes black, then error message shows.

Details: Long ago, I was trying to play a game and coundnt do to graphics card. I got a driver, and I could play then. Only 1 problem. My screen goes black all of a sudden, then comes back on and shows a message that says "Somethingorother Has Sucessfully Recovered".

This happens about every 5-15 minutes, everyday. I'm 85% it's from installing the driver, but it was the correct one, because when I went to the site, it had it automatically check mine, for the latest version.

Answer:Screen flashes black, then error message shows

Hello XuzI,

More than likely its a driver issue. What make and model of graphics card is it?

Also, lets view if the driver did not install correctly. Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties. Click the tab that says Hardware than the button that says Device Manager. See if anything in this list has an icon next to it which looks like a yellow triangle with an ! in it.

I just got a new VN7-592G-77LB and set up World of Warcraft on it, at 1080P Ultra settings. Unfortunately, at apparently random intervals while playing the screen flashes black for a fraction of a second. I've not managed to see any rhyme or reason as to when this happens - it can happen just as the game starts in the character selection screen, or while I'm actually playing. I can see tens of minutes without it happening at all, and then see a couple/three  flashes in close succession, then nothing again for a few minutes. It's very annoying. In searching on the web for this issue I've seen reports of other laptops with Skylake processors and NVidia 960M chips have similar issues, and I've tested all the options that have been reported: - Updating Intel drivers to the latest version- Updating NVidia drivers to the latest version- Ensuring that the XBox Live DVR functionality is turned off.- Ensured that I have the latest BIOS installed.- Used the NVidia Control Panel to ensure that WoW64.exe is forced to use the NVidia GPU. Does anyone have any ideas for anything I haven't checked?

I haven't had any problems in a while since I started using SuperAntiSpyware.

However, in the past two weeks, sadly, things have changed. After booting up, the monitor flashes completely black (as if I turned it off) for 1 or 2 seconds, maybe 2 or 3 times, sometimes a few seconds apart, sometimes 10 or 15 minutes apart.

Then, shortly after that, the system freezes - everything locks up, CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work, the Windows key doesn't
work, the mouse doesn't work, etc. I have to do a hard reboot.

I've run Superantispyware and RegCure many times. Seems like SuperAntiSpyware picks up a number of adaware issues when I
go to some of the malware sites (which seems pretty strange to me), but I don't seem to be picking up any dangerous virus.

Here's the most recent SAS log:

Hey all this is the basics of my rig:

Asus N80v
Nvidia 9650M Card
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600
4GB DDR2 RAM
64 bit - Windows 7 Home Premium

I updated my graphics driver from Nvidia's page just recently so I could enable aero, however since then once I use an aero enabled setting, the screen will pereodically freeze up and then flash black for maybe 2 seconds, and then return to normal.

Also, when I run it in a basic setting, there's odd lines of pixels just flashing red whenever certain images are on the screen.

Note I ran a clean install from vista 32 bit, however I know my computer is capable of vista 64 bit if that matters.

Thank you,
Michael

Edit: Since posting this, the flashing has occurred at lesser intervals in regular basic theme

Answer:Black Screen Flashes for 2 Seconds when Aero is Enabled

It looks like the 9650M is an overclocked 9600M which is always bad. I overclocked my 8600M GT once (for fun) and ended up with your situation. Lets give Nvidia the benefit of the doubt and try some other troubleshooting steps

1) Install an older driver for your card from Nvidia

I've been having a strange problem lately. At random times my computer screen well go black, and then afterward my mouse will be centered in the screen. If a full screen program like a game is open the game will minimize, then as soon as the screen comes back the game will pop back up again. It will do this four or five times in a row and can happen from any point my computer is on to several hours later. I don't believe it is my monitor because of the mouse centering. Any advice you could provide would be appreciated greatly.

System Specs:
Motherboard: Manufacturer- MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO.,LTD
Model- MS-7388
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
BIOS: BIOS Vendor American Megatrends Inc.
BIOS Version V1.6
BIOS Date 04/23/2008
Graphics Card: Radeon X1650 Driver: V. 8.11(up to date)
Memory: 5GB installed

I use SIW to get information about my computer. If anyone wants any specific or more detailed information let me know. I just didn't want to post a good fifty pages worth of information and clog up the forum.

Answer:Screen flashes black and mouse centers afterward

Hi and Welcome.

Please list hardware specs -
power supply
wattage
manufacturer
temps
etc...

Have you checked the Event Viewer to see what events if any precipitate this issue?
START | type eventvwr.msc -Start with Filtered logs - Admin

Before doing so, note the exact time the event occurs so you can find it in Event Viewer.

Also check WERCON -
START | type wercon.exe - hit enter - view Problem History

Does this occur in SAFEMODE? Boot into SAFEMODE - tap the F8 key during boot and test there. Only native Vista video driver loaded.

Check Device Manager - click on view tab, enable hidden devices. Any red/yellow flags present?
START | type devmgmt.msc

Run Vista System Health Report - save in HTM/ HTML format
START | perfmon /report - 60 seconds viewer appears - save in HTM or HTML format

Run msinfo32 - save as NFO file
START | type msinfo32 - save as NFO file - you'll see NFO file extension when you go to save it

Zip up perfmon & msinfo32 files and attach to post.

Answer:Thinkpad T430 Flashes a Black Screen for 5s When AC Plugs In/Out

Hi Thiru,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that display of your Lenovo ThinkPad T430 flashes when you plug in or remove the AC adapter.

First change the ?Lower display refresh rate? to ?never? in Power manager as shown in the screenshot below.
Spoiler (Highlight to read)

If issue still persists, I would suggest you to uninstall the current graphics driver that you have. Let windows install its own generic drivers. Once generic driver has been installed, test again and see if the problem occurs. If it does not, download the latest graphic driver for your system from Lenovo Support page, install it and test again.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I purchased the X1 Carbon new last year from Lenovo's website, with the largest warranty possible. Lately, the screen started turning off at completely randomly intervals, not dependant to the programs I have runnning (at least it doesn't seem to be). The screen will briefly turn blue, and then go black. I can immediatly resume normal function by touching the mouse or keyboard, but still, I would prefer this expensive laptop would not have the issue. My battery settings have been checked and the screen is set to turn off the display, "never." This an issue I should resolve via the warranty? I have no idea.

1. My screen briefly flashes a black screen when switching from the startup page to my log on page.

4. SearchSnopes shows on logs, but I can't find it in my program files

5. Log shows this:::  Handler: tmbp - {1A77E7DC-C9A0-4110-8A37-2F36BAE71ECF} -  No File

6. I get some can't display pages or white pages that appear to be stuck in loading mode.

7. Opera browser hangs up and sometimes freezes. IE is mainly can't display pages. Although I don't use Firefox that much, it often times out on loading pages.

8. While typing a search term, sometimes my cursor will act erratic and jump back to mid-sentence resulting in messed up words.

I've also ran Malwarebytes and it doesn't find anything. I downloaded FRST as instructed. Posting log and attaching Addition log. Thanks for you... Read more

I've had this happened once or twice since I've had the computer, but so far today..world record, it's happened 3 times in one day. Which concerns me. Alot of the time, it happens when the computer is coming back out of sleep mode. The screen will flash black for literally half a second, and the taskbar at the bottom goes back to default settings. (Nothing else does.) And generally nothing will work In the taskbar when this happens. Example, my wireless will show that its active on my taskbar before it flashes, then it shows up with x over it after the flash happens. And I cannot go back and change it manually. I have to reboot. When I do reboot, it is back to normal.

Is there anyone who might have any idea what causes this to happen, or what I can do to remedy it? Thank you!

The PC boots up but does not display. Boot up screens appear momentarily then remains black. Possible to shut down PC normally using (unseen) keystrokes. Repeated attempts will finally boot successfully. Created Windows repair disc that seems to help but not every time. Tried new graphics card but same result.

Answer:Start up problem. Screen flashes on for less than a second.

Do you see the BIOS post screen ? Or can you boot into BIOS and see the BIOS configuration pages ?If no, this seems to be a hardware issue rather than software. When you press the power button, do the fans start rotating and hard disk making noise ?If this is a desktop, then remove the side cover and start checking with the electrical connections. Also check if there is a missing connection, such as the one to the video card.CoolGuy

I've tried downloading new video drivers from nvidia (on a different computer), booted in safe mode, installed, rebooted, same problem. Everything in safe mode seems to work fine. I tried booting in safe mode with networking, and the computer hangs up at the last line before windows would load normally (/mup i believe). I tried installing new LAN drivers from the MOBO manufacturer, but I get an error, and they won't install. Any ideas?

A replacement disk can be ordered from dell for about 7.00 and shipping.Your computer has a recovery partition. It can restore your computer to factory condition. My daughter has a wireless network set up with SBC DSL using a 2Wire modem. Her sister and another roomate have Internet access. The 2Wire is in the room where there is intermittent access. This has gone on for three months. Finally, we installed a Netgear adapter because we discovered the green light was not on in the back of her tower. Now, the green light is on and the new adapter is recognized. We didn't remove the old adapter. When she starts her computer now, her screen is black after the XP logo. Please help because SBC techs are of no help.

Answer:Black Screen After Logo

Does this do this after Windows loads Explorer and the desktop? Check your power settings adjust the time interval when the monitor is shut off via Windows power management.

Hi to all , Im getting one problem with my laptop Acer TM 4001WLMI
When I try to switch it on, the acer screen comes and Im able to press F2 and to enter bios menu.
After the logo of the laptop, it goes to a black screen and the hard disk led will start working and the black screen will remain.

Meanwhile: If I quit the RAM memory from the computer, It will always have black screen from the beginning(even without showing the acer logo)
And If I disconnect the hard disk it will come a 4 line message bucle in which the last line says: "operating system not found"

If I try to press F8 for safe menu, it wont allow me to get to this menu.

Edit Update:
I tried Recovery CD, and I did chkdsk (everything went fine), then when I tried to dir over c:/windows, it worked, and when I tried to do dir over c:/ the computer suddenly restarted.

I went againt though the Recovery cd, and saw correctly files on c:/ although it was saying "access deny" for folders(thats normal).
After this I did fixboot and fixmbr, and restarted computer and it again has the black window after the acer logo.

So what Ive done finally is doing a recovery of the files with Ubuntu Live CD. Ubuntu runs quite well...

Im quite desesperate to make my window come back to live again, but not with a clean install.
any idea people? Why this could have happened?
I think there were some powercuts the last time my computer worked properly by the way. Does this justify all?

Thanks. Best Rega... Read more

I do not remember the exact time that this problem first occurred. Maybe it was a few months ago.. Anyway, I thought nothing of it because it did not and still does not effect my system's performance. However, it is annoying and I would simply like to get the the bottom of it.

When I turn on my computer, the Windows loading screen appears. About halfway through, the screen goes black, and then then logo pops up once more and continues to load XP. It is important to note that screen does not turn off, it simply goes black. Similar to when you make a change to the video settings, such as resolution or refresh rate.

It also goes black every time I click the NVIDIA Control Panel tray icon. Every time, without fail.

I have updated to the newest drivers for my video card, and the problem still persists. I do not have any viruses, spyware, etc.

Any suggestions or experience from similar situations would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

See subject. The computer screen will flash to black when the computer is plugged in and/or unplugged from the AC adapter. Can someone tell me how to fix this? It's really annoying.

Answer:E540 Screen flashes to black when computer is plugged and unplugged from AC adapter

Hello and welcome,

Does the screen stay black or just flash to black and come back on?

My guess is that this happens when it switches brightness levels between AC and battery.  I've had a few machines that did this (briefly flashed to black), and I just ignored it.

You might avoid this by setting the on-AC and on-battery brightness to the same levels, but it might still flash even if the levels are the same.

[edit] I can't seem to find detailed specs just now...  Does your machine have switchable graphics?  The flash may happen if the default graphics device is different in the two power modes.

Is your graphics driver up-to-date?

Z.

I am working on a newly refurbished computer and when viewing some web sites the screen appears to turn off. The monitor goes completely dark like the power cord is loose, and then comes back up. This happens repeatedly and its impossible to do any work. If I switch tabs in Firefox or minimize the web browser, the issue goes away.

This is happening in both IE6 and Firefox 2.0.0.2. I uninstalled Java SDK and updates, I installed Flash, I ran Spybot, I updated the Dell Intel chipset, I updated the on-board video driver to a 2006 release, and the machine was scanned with AVG AntiVirus. And I rebooted a few times.

It doesn't happen on every website, either. Of those that do flash, some flash worse than others.

Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have any ideas?

Whether I try turning it on with battery or AC, the same issue occurs. The indicator lights turn on but the screen flashes white and doesn't display a thing afterword. Something is definately broken, but what?
