Windows Update gets stuck looking for updates

Question: Windows Update gets stuck looking for updates

Windows Update has become erratic, currently gets stuck in the "looking for updates" phase. I have followed the instructions on this forum titled "Windows Update Posting Instructions." Ran the SURT with no issues reported. The SFC scan came back clean as well. There are no error codes like the example shown, on the WU screen, but at one point there was a pop-up box (I believe in conjunction with Windows Update Standalone Installer) with error 0x8024001e which may or may not now be resolved. The MS Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool has not helped. Also along the way I was advised to install Hotfix for Windows KB947821, which I did. Compressed CBS file will not upload to this post because it is too large (about 6MB).

All this is way above my pay grade as a non-tech user, but I think I have followed the instructions correctly. Any wisdom greatly appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Windows Update gets stuck looking for updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:
6 GB RAM
AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3
Vista SP2

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I have a Toshiba T235D-S1340 running Windows 7 Home Premium version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601 currently on my bench, trying to work out extreme slow-downs for a friend.

While I have seemed to have solved the slow-down issues, when running Windows Update, it seems to just spin it's wheels indefinitely while "Checking for updates..."

I am running Windows Update from the system control panel, not a browser.

I tried the steps detailed in this thread...

Windows Update - Reset

...running the third batch file as administrator, restarting when it's done. Did not resolve the issue. I also tried running the Windows Diagnostic utility as described in that same thread, and it did find and fix several problems, but Windows Update still seems to sit checking for updates for hours, never completing. The HDD activity light does go on and off somewhat furiously during this time.

I did notice that there are very many failed updates in the update history list before running the .BAT or Windows Diagnostic utility.

Any ideas? How long should I typically let Windows Update run before giving up hope?

Any help would be appreciated. I wasn't sure if it was better to post a new thread for this or post in the thread linked above, figured a new thread made more sense.

Thanks.

I've been having trouble with Windows Update recently:
* Three updates were stuck on downloading at 0%
* Rebooting the laptop resulted in it getting stuck at the "Getting things ready..." screen
The fix was actually pretty simple:
1. Reboot your computer
2. Open Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\Software Distribution
3. Open an elevated command prompt (Admin)
4. Run these two commands:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
5. Select all files in abovementioned folder and delete them
6. Make sure to empty the trash afterwards
7. Reboot and run Windows Update again
That way I was able to fix my Windows Update process that has been stuck for more than a week now. It immediately found many more updates to install, downloaded them and installed them just fine.

Hey, so I have this problem, I have installed fresh windows 10 about a month ago and now I wanted to check for updates, and well, that works, but if I want to actually install them, it says it's downloading the updates but no network activity other than google chrome is happening and it keeps being stuck at "Downloading updates 1%"
I have tried this article: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...2-da0870b544f9 but it didn't do anything, I am helpless.

I recently installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Previous operating system was Windows 10. When I run a Windows Update, it doesn't stop Checking for Updates. I left it for a 24 hour period yesterday, restarted, and then let it go over night again today.

When I was installing the Network Adapter driver, I received this message: Microsoft SNMP Service was not detected. You must install this service for the Advanced Server sub-agent to work properly. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is checked when I look at the Windows Features under Turn Windows features on or off in the Control Panel. The driver installation finished and I am able to make network connections. I am not sure if this is related to the Windows Update issue so I though I would mention it.

Thanks.

If I stop Windows update service, the CPU usage will get back to normal, and the checking for updates will fail.
Please help if you could solve this issue.

I have installed Windows 7 starter on my netbook. Now it's time to update

WU first said it had to update a component and seems it did correctly.

After each boot, WU says "Check for updates for this computer" (I have it set to check but not download them)
Windows Update is stuck at checking for updates, and while that, CPU usage remains at 50% with occasional spikes at 100% by svchost.

No error codes, SFC scannow returns OK, no log files, and no error codes as per the "Windows Update Posting Instructions" thread.
I have defragged, cleaned registry, reset Windows update as per the "Windows Update - Reset" thread, and waited for hours and hours.

I searched and can't get a clue some say to simply wait but I've waited too much.
What else can I do?

Thank you-

Answer:Windows Update stuck at checking for updates

Hi,
Well you can always close the update window and shut down or restart and see if that shakes it up
Resetting windows updates also removes any wifi or lan drivers that are loaded that I know of pretty much resets everything which there are hundreds of updates to display

You might check but reset also reset updates settings to default which is to download and install so you might double check that if you haven't already.

I've always gotten in a habit to use wired internet connections when checking for or loading updates.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
How long has it been searching for updates ?
It okay to use Restart.

It's been unfortunately common
I believe it's the update system updating it's self first before offering any update to load by the user.

Hey everybody!

I'm in the process of overhauling our old family computer to run games and not much else (and not high-end ones, either).  I've removed bloatware, slimmed down the program list, updated all the drivers, etc.  Then I ran into a snag.  Windows Update won't progress past the "Checking for updates" phase and actually install anything.  It last updated in May 2015.

From following the advice over at the Microsoft Support area regarding Windows Update not working, I came up with two error codes: 0x80070057 and 0x80080005.  A search of these codes led me to this page (not advertising here, just full disclosure on how I've tried to solve my problem):  https://www.techjunkie.com/fix-error-0x80070057/

Running sfc /scannow gave me the error message of "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."  I couldn't open the CBS.log, so I moved on to the next step.

Running SFCFix gave me the following report:

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.

Hi all,

Am on Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate

This problem has got me frustrated for the past few days and seems to be persistent. I need to install the 2015 C++ runtime redistributable package for some applications to work. (Both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of the 2015 redistributable)

I tried running both of the installers at the first time, but it ended up hanging up until the "Processing Windows 7 MSU" for hours, i googled it and it seems that i need an update to be installed for it to work.

The Problem:
I go to windows update>Click check for updates, then Windows update is "checking for updates..." forever

So if it wont let me update through that, I try updating windows via the standalone installer exe files from the microsoft website...
Ex: I try to run the installer for the update KB3050265 x-64 (64 bit version), and then the installer gets stuck on "searching for updates on this computer"
Then i try to run the 32 bit version of the update, ending up on the same result.

Basically, i can't update windows through the windows update and downloading the standalone installers directly because it gets stuck I then can't install the needed redistributables to run new programs that need it (only have the 2010 C++ redists)

Solutions i've tried:
I tried running some solutions in the internet as it may be a common problem but so far, none of them have worked.

Hi

This is Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate (32bit). Windows Update is not working. It is set to install updates automatically, yet it never does, and if I initiate a manual scan, it doesn't work either. It gets stuck at the stage "scanning for new updates".

What I did so far:
- Cleaned all the temp directories
- Installed the latest windows update agent manually (using the standalone installer from Microsoft page - installed successfully)

No effects. It is still not working.

Here's the windowsupdate.log:

If you wait long enough, this list of updates should come in.
It might take more than 24 hours of searching.

Which Windows Update Client (formerly called agent) did you install?

I recently purchased a new Samsung 850 PRO SSD. I did a clean install using the recovery partition from my HP DV7 HDD and then cloned to the SSD.

The very fist thing I did was Windows Update and it just has the window that says "Checking for Updates Online..." with the bar constantly going.

I managed to download and install the SURT (KB947821) and that is the only update listed as installed under the Windows Update history.

SFC Scan passes with no issues.

On the Windows Update screen, no error codes appear. Just says "Never Checked."

Error code that I have come across in my CBS log file (multiple instances):
HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE

When did you last got an upgrade? Was it ever updated after installed.

Installs earlier this year did not have this issue. Wondering if since the Windows 10 rollout started maybe something changed on MS update servers?

Hi, i'm having a hard time with Windows Update. When i check for for updates it gets stuck and even if i dont check for updates, the Windows Update service starts anyway. In both cases it is accompanied by high CPU usage as shown here:

List of things i did:
1. Anti-virus scan (nothing)
2. Windows Update Troubleshooter (didnt fix it)
3.Check Disk for Errors (no problems were detected)
I eventually tried Resetting Windows Update Componets Manually (following step 4)using the proccess described here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058
I ran into trouble Reregistering files (step 6).
Many .dlls were NOT successful, such as regsvr32.exe shdocvw.dll (pop-up message said something along the lines of "Connected but failed to register, check if .dll is vaild and try again later'')and some more which i cant remember. That said, i completed all steps because i didnt know what else to do.
The results were the same as before apart from having my Update history whiped and new folders in Windows (don't know if i need the two them in each file):

No solution to this has been found yet. Please help.

Answer:Windows Update stuck at "Checking for updates'

This is a common problem now with many many people that started here over a year ago and has gotten progressively worse. There are threads on various forums (Wilders, DSLR) about it and so on. It took 4 hours and 15 minutes of "checking for updates" on my Win 7 system yesterday, but eventually they did show up and I then had no trouble installing them. All I can suggest is patience, just let it run until it shows the list. I hope MS will fix this issue at some point, because a lot of people are getting very very frustrated with all this. And yes, the entire time mine was checking, the cpu usage was at a constant 50% more or less. However, I was still able to use the machine during this time, so not too much of a hardship. This issue needs fixing though, for sure!

PS: Various people have posted various temporary fixes, but nothing sticks. The next month the same problem occurs on the next update check. So at this time, there is no real solution. Don't bother looking for one, in other words...

I know this is an old thread, but what exactly did you do in safe mode? I have the exact same problem. I tried to boot in safe mode. Tried opening Windows Update, but nothing at all happened (it would not open). I seem to have found info saying that Windows Update cannot open in safe mode.

Anyway, nothing new when I rebooted again and tried to check for updates in Windows Update again. It just keeps checking and checking and checking for hours...

I've also tried the Microsoft Fix It tool, but what happens there is that it says "Checking for updates on the Internet" and is stuck there. So basically the same thing as in Windows Update...

Btw, I have just done a clean install of Windows 7 Professional x64 (SP1) on this computer, so this is the first time I run Windows Update after that (meaning no updates have ever been installed).

I am not tech savvy at all, so now I'm clueless...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Yesterday when I started downloading windows update, only one update could be downloaded i. KB3114431. After that may be there was some sort of problem on the network and I could not download the other updates as my network was down at that time. so I disconnected from network and cancelled the downloads and shut down the computer. It normally installed the downloaded update. after that from today morning I am unable to download any updates. The network is fine, as I can browse the internet normally. But windows update screen keeps stuck at 0%. Though now the shut down button shows the alert icon for update installation as you can see in screenshot. Is there any way to fix it? Thank you.

Ok over the past week or so windows has been installing the same 3 updates every night! Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit

So I checked to see if they failed and they were installed successfully!

I have ran 3 different MS Fixit things to no avail. I have tried to update the PC manually however it does not go past 0% on installing the updates it just says preparing updates.

I tried adding 2 optional updates to make it 5 and manually clicking update however it sticks on 0% downloading updates.

I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting and fixing PC problems however this one I am defeated! I do not want to restore if possible, will this take away ANY of my files e.g work I have done I have never had to do it before!

However if someone can suggest a fix without having to restore that would be great!

Thanks in advance!
Ash

Answer:Windows Update - Installs Same Updates On Shut Down - 0% Stuck

Ok something new,

I tried some more fixes I found online I tried deleting the contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to no avail.

And also ran a program which reinstalled WU and all its .dll's etc.

Now I have a different problem it wont search for updates it says searching then stops and say error "8008005".

Tried disabling AV and FIrewall (Avast, Comodo and MBAM) and ran scans on all of those including SUPERAntiSpyware.

I only have one system restore from around 5 days ago when the updates were just reinstalling and i had no errors.

Should I restore to that or try and fix this error (which i have been looking how to with no luck!)

Thanks
Ash

Answer:Windows Update Error - Stuck on "Checking for updates"

So... have you removed all of the updates and tried again, as a troubleshooting step? This would be a start, but only do so when you are not going to be browsing around. Until the updates are installed again, this computer will be risky to use due to the outstanding number of vulnerabilities over the past year-and-a-half. Let me know if this works or if you have done this already.

My Windows Vista machine for some reason is checking for updates and it's been sitting there checking for updates for 2 hours and nothing has changed.  It is Windows Vista Ultimate x64.  I installed about 2 updates on it that are supposed to fix this problem but nothing has fixed it.  I tried a few 3rd party programs to see if it could install the updates.  The Vista installation has almost no updates.  I know Windows Visa is not supported but is there like an update problem on Microsoft's servers?  I don't know if it's that the version of Windows Vista is too old to install updates or is it that because it's not supported that I wouldn't be able to install any old or fairly recent updates before April 11th and the patch for the wannacry ransome.
I took a look at the Windows update log and I noticed I had a lot of warnings and errors and it had a lot of problems downloading something so does anyone know what is going on?

PS:  I am not able to show the Windows update log at this time.

Hello,

I have 2 laptops with the identical issue. I am trying to work on one before fixing the other.

I have been working with another Bleeping Computer tech, and he referred me to this forum.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/611431/infected-with-win32bundledtoolbargoogled/?view=getnewpost

the above thread is the last communication that we have had on the topic. My problem is this: Windows Update in Win7 is stuck in a loop trying to search for updates.    At one time, I did an ESET Online Scanner scan and came up with a virus. The virus was cleaned, but I still have the issue with not getting Windows Updates. This one laptop in particular, the issue started when I had Vista on there. I had since erased the hard drive in a 3-swipe process, and I did this 3 times. After the first time, I used Win 7 on there instead of Vista. The problem still persists. Can you help me with this issue? Thank you.

Answer:Windows Update in Win7 is stuck in a loop trying to search for updates

I would say if the system has been checked by others as per your last original post and stated clean.

Then i see you say that Windows Update - stalls ? ... { You could check Task Manager - Running Tasks - and if WU is running ok.
Does this mean the PC is unresponsive or just Updates taking to long ? { No % Increase }.

I have had PCs take over 10 hours to process and then download.

Hopefully all your Services are still correctly Set ? , i would run the Windows Update over night , the longer the better , and see if it can actually complete.

This has been an issue for quite sometime after intro of Win10 , and for Win 7 machines to be last inline and  ess of a priorty over 10.

Basically my old HDD died from bad sectors and I had to format and install Windows 7 Enterprise on a back up hdd that was flooded with useless documents from the past.

Went ahead done what I had to do and left Windows to check for updates, Steam install some games and League of Legends update.

However everything finished but Windows was still checking for updates and I noticed the svchost.exe (netsvcs one) uses about 1.5 GB out of 4 RAM. Immediately knew that this was caused by the Windows Update service that's under it.

However turning Windows Update off is never a smart thing to do and I don't have the kind of time to manually download updates.

I know that it will probably blast me with 200+ updates (has happened in the past but never used up so much RAM and finished way faster than 6 hours with all my usual post installation stuff.

Anyways some info you should probably know:
-I'm using a Wireless adapter (TP-LINK TL-WN722N) and I have read threads here that Windows Update would sometimes fail to do what it should with Wireless adapters, unfortunatelly that isn't an option at the moment.
-Resetting Windows Update manually and through Fix It doesn't work.

So first thing I'm looking at is updating the Windows Update client, please do tell if you think otherwise, or if not link me to the newest Windows update client or probbably any hotfixes that could fix the problem (never done this before and wouldn't want to mess up, so I decided to ask you guys )

I have been attempting to install Windows Updates as well as the Windows 10 upgrade over the last few days but each time the Update gets stuck at "Checking for updates". I haven't seen any error codes however it was stuck at this status for 8+ hours today. I have attempted to install updates via the standalone installer as well and that gets stuck at "Searching for updates on this computer".

hi guys! hope everyone's doing well. before i delve into the big issue, have a minor question. last night i was trying to update some drivers and the fan started running hot. checked the task manager and the CPU usage was 100% it was scary. anyway, i stopped the task, but the fan was running pretty wild for a good 3-5 minutes. how damaging was this to the overall condition of the laptop? hope not too bad or not at all heh.. ok so shortly after, i updated 2 things, BIOS, and Windows update. it was late at night, i figured it would finish when i wake up, but nope, the update install was stuck. Then i restarted the computer, and got a message saying that update failed, and reverting to old changes (something along those lines). i cant seem to get out from that message. so i went into safe mode, and tried to delete the updates one at a time, and for some reason, i cant! now im clueless. i dont have a recovery image or cd heh... i should really set a recovery point before updating... need to remind myself to do that. i tried to troubleshoot the updates, but windows can't fix the problems either.. how can i fix this?

Answer:Windows update failed, stuck in loop, cant delete updates in safe mode

I actually have the same issue with my PC - Desktop. Where it'll start installing then once at 80% it'll start reverting. It gets annoying, I have suspicions that it's cause I upgraded my GPU from a HD 7400 series to a GTX 750 Ti. So I think my when I tried doing updates it was still trying to update the non-existant HD 7400 GPU and causing my installation to fail.  I'm curious to know if maybe this is a Hardware issue verses software !

Note : This thread is not Windows 7 only, but for newer and older Windows versions

.

Guys, I'm really get annoyed about this. Is really Microsoft didn't have a solution that doesn't requires users to do complicated steps?

The problem is, when I want to update the Windows using Windows Update, the CPU usage kicks to full usage by svchost.exe

I have 2 laptop victims here :

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E135 (Windows 7 Home Basic, not updated for 2 years) : Takes about 6 hours to show 120+ updates

Sony VAIO VGN-CR220Q (Windows Vista Home Premium, fresh install) : Takes about 4 hours and still stuck now

Sony VAIO VGN-CR220Q (Windows 8.1 Pro, fresh install) : Takes about some hours to show 50+ updates

.

Why the Windows takes so much time to just shows... a hundred updates? It is not thousand updates o_O

Well I know the CPU is so slow, but can't Microsoft optimized the process? I mean what are Windows doing? Why it takes so much time?

I've gone through several threads relating to this issue, with zero luck, so far.  Have had this installation of Win7 x64 for over a year with no WU issues.  Hadn't updated in a few weeks, so I went to do a manual check, today.  The netsvcs
process w/ WU locks one of my cores (25% CPU use).  Initially, this process accesses a variety of files on the drive, but, after a few minutes, there is absolutely zero further file access from this process.  Process never shuts down or releases
that 25% CPU.

I've run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.  Had problems the first time, rebooted, stopped the crypt, BITS, and WU process.  Ran it, again, it "fixed" four issues and claimed that everything was swell.  Rebooted, ran WU... perpetual
"checking."

Walked through the manual process from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058, though I did get a number of errors when trying to register many of the modules in step six.  So, didn't have much confidence.  Anyway, continued through the steps,
rebooted, ran WU...  No dice.

Manually downloaded and ran the two updates from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810 and https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083710.  Both told me they were already installed.

At this point, I'm looking at a complete wipe and reinstall, which I'd really rather avoid.  Any other bright ideas to resolve this?  WU log at https://www.dropbox.com/s/3... Read more

Hi
I've been trying to set up a few second hand laptops for a charity youth club. One went without a hitch, one won't update Windows at all.

It's running Windows 7 SP1, I've tried various fixes but nothing seems to be working.

I've followed the instructions on the post. Attached is my CBS log zip file. I don't have any error codes as it just sits on "Checking for Updates".

Interestingly the first time I ran the SURT it just sat for over 8 hours on "Checking for Updates" as well. Second time, after a power down & reboot it did it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This was meant to be a quick favour & now turning into a long job!

Thanks

Hi,

I installed win 7 recently and activated it. The updates dont seem to install automatically. I have tried many FixIt and manuall installation past 3 to 4 days, but nothing worked. The maximum I could go was getting "193 updates available" alert. Even if I select one update out of those it just loops forever in checking/searching for updates. I installed Win10 hoping that would resolve it but coudnt activate win due to clean install. So I have now reinstalled win7 but again stuck in same place. I tried installing System Update readiness tool and its running for around 2 hours now. But the CBS log file's last update timestamp seems to have stopped an hour before.

I checked the posting instructions and it says wait for few hours after running SRUT, before posting. I see a dialog box with title "Windows Update standalone installer" and message "Searching for updates on this computer..." . Attached CBS folder. Please advise.

Hello Sevenforums.

I have a Lenovo Z500 laptop which i got with windows 8 on it. Later i upgraded it to windows 10, but the performance seemed to be lacking after i updated. I therefore installed windows 7 ultimate SP1 on it, after i formated all the drives.
The installation went smoothly, though the drivers for several components like WAN and LAN had to be installed from a USB.

I then decided to run windows updates, but it dosn't get further than "searching for updates".
I read in another thread that the windowsupdate.txt might have some information to what is going on, but I do not know how to identify the problem from the data.

Also, when i tried to zip the windowsupdate.txt file, it said the drive was writing protected, and that i didnt have permission to create the .zip file, even though i am administrator.

I have attached a zip of the file, hopefully someone can help me resolve this problem, as I use this laptop for my edducation.

I recently re-installed Windows 7 Home Premium on my Alienware X51 after getting a lot of random freezes. After the installation completed, I noticed that Windows Update was getting stuck at "Checking for updates..." and would not move forward, even after I left the computer on overnight. I was ultimately able to get Windows Update to function by updating the Windows Update Client as described here: https://blog.krissmilne.tech/windows...ng-for-updates

However, that only worked once; Windows Update is now getting stuck at stuck at "Checking for updates..." again. The last few entries from WindowsUpdate.log are as follows:

Hi,
Current issue: Windows 7 sp1 update stuck at "checking for updates" for more than a week
My computer: windows 7 professional sp1 installation originally
Last automatic checked and updated successfully: May 11, 2015
CCleaner cleaned up: once every week
Anti-virus: AVG for more than 10 years

Self - troubleshooting done so far but did not work:
1) CCleaner cleaned up & Disk cleanup under safe mode
2) Reset Update following this instruction: Windows Update - Reset
3) Temporarily turned off AVG anti-virus while checking for update
4) System restored to the earliest restore point: July 15, 2015

Please help.

Answer:windows 7 sp1 update stuck at "checking for updates"

This is currently a common issue - partly caused by a poor update from MS which slows the process down, and partly caused by throttling of the MS servers.

Simply leave WU to do it's thing overnight - or longer if necessary - it will get there in the end.
If it's still not completed a scan after 24 hours running...

I work for an IT firm in The Bahamas, and as a result, do a lot of Windows 7 reloads.  However, I have noticed that recently (within the last year) Windows 7 has a very difficult time updating after a fresh reload with SP1.  When I check for updates,
it starts scanning and says "Checking for Updates", but never finds any.  It just keeps checking.  I've left it running for 48 hours without ever finding a single update.

Here's the thing, it isn't a particular computer.  As I said, I do a lot of reloads.  This happens on almost every computer after a reload of Windows 7 regardless of brand.  Sometimes I scan before activating Windows, sometimes after.
There is no antivirus installed and I've tried it with Windows Firewall both enabled and disabled.  Sometimes after scanning for a long time, it will automatically install updates without having me select any of the updates.  It still says "Checking
for Updates." Other times, it just never finds or installs any updates, but it still says "Checking for Updates".  I'm not the only one who has recognized the problems, my colleagues have also experienced it.  I've also tried updating
on many different networks: home, work, customers network, etc.  Same result.

I have done lots of research online to see if other people have been having this issue, but I have not found anything.  Has anybody else been experiencing this probl... Read more

Hi everybody,

I am running in to a problem where the Windows Update is stuck on checking for updates, now I have freshly upgraded a Windows 7 machine from Enterprise to Professional with a new product key - which it did work, activated as a Genuine. But it might not be just the Windows Update, any other software would be doing the same thing as for Windows Update - checking for updates, so I am just wondering if there is a one way click to solve this problem?

Everything else works except from the Windows Update, what is doing is just checking for updates and it hangs on checking for hours and hours - so I had enough and I want to find a best solution that would work.

Now, I am not quite sure if the Windows Update is taking time to get all the updates gathered in or it might be stuck. But I don't know, I can't really tell on what the computer is doing in the background process.

During the research for finding this solution, and I have came up with different solutions, but I don't want to risk too much on registry or doing manual servicing including in with deleting a few files from the C: drive, downloading a few tweakers/fixers applications such as Microsoft FixIt - but none of this solved the problem, apart from being patient and wait.

The only thing I haven't done is doing a sfc /scannow check, disk clean up or reinstall Windows 7 Professional and doing a disk check before startup.

Already tried everything I read on a lot of threads here. The Windows Update is stuck at the "green bar"

I'm using Windows 8.1

1) Already used the Microsoft Fixit from this KB topic: How do I reset Windows Update components?
2) Tried all the fixes I could use from this page: https://www.winhelp.us/reinstall-windows-update.html
3) Tried "sfc /scannow"
4) Tried "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"

Still nothing, the green bar keep going for more than 4/5 hours

Is there anything left to do? Or just re-install? Uninstall/Install windows again?

Answer:Windows Update stuck at "Checking for Updates"

Temporarily disable your antivirus program if it helps.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise x64 virtual machine that I use as a template in my vSphere environment that I keep up to date with all Windows updates. This VM only contains Windows 7 in its disk.
Last time I was able to fully patch this machine was back in May 2016; a few nights ago I tried to update Windows 7 updates and it's stuck at Checking for updates... (I let it sat there for 12 hours)
I read several blogs on resetting Windows Updates services (stopping BITS and Windows Services then deleting all files in Windows\SoftwareDistribution) and none of them seem to work. I also ran a Windows Update troubleshooting tool that is supposed to Fix
problems with Windows Updates - didn't work either as it tries to get updates from the internet.
Next, I decided to create a brand new Windows 7 machine, and tried to run Windows Updates...nothing, still gets hung up at Checking for updates...
Anyone has any ideas on how to fix Windows Updates so I can get updates? It seems that something changed recently that broke it. Windows 10 patching seems to work just fine as I've had no issues with my Windows 10 machines.
Thanks!

My computer had 45 updates that were stuck in downloading updates for 12 - 24 hours+.
I decided to stop the downloading updates process to find out why my computer was stuck in downloading updates.
I followed instructions from a Windows forum and turned off my avast, malwarebytes and windows firewall and tried to download the 45 updates again.
The 45 updates were stuck in downloading updates for another 12 - 24+ hours.

So I went to a different forum and did the following to the computer:

- Ran Microsoft FixIt, received error 0x80070424
- Tried to run update. Still hangs
- Went into msconfig and went to selective start-up and disabled windows
update. Still hanfs.
- Noticed Chromium browser was installed; uninstalled it and deleted subkeys
in the registry
- Ran malwarebytes and discovered 3 viruses:

45 updates means that computer hasn't been updated in quite a few months.

What is the KB and the date of the last successful update?

Go here and scroll down to Solution to the Issue

see if you have any of the 3 updates for Windows 7 installed: 3172605, 3177467, or 3020369.
Pick one, download it and install.

At first I completed the download and than waited for around 3 hours for "preparing for installation" and than when i again started the updating after the restart it is showing "checking for update" from past an hour.
What should i do?

Answer:Why does windows to update stuck at "checking for updates" and "preparing for installation" ?

The OS is probably missing some updates during the upgrade process. Be patient and let the process work on its own.

The title pretty much says it all. I stopped receiving automated downloads of Windows 7 updates in Dec 2016 (even though my system is checked for receiving automated updates). I went to Windows Catalog and found updates released after Dec 2016, downloaded
them, and when I try to install, the infamous "searching for updates on this computer" pops up and does nothing. I can't even cancel it. I have to right-click on the program line at the bottom of the screen and exit it that way.

Any suggestions as to how to proceed?

I think the "updates freezing" issue has come up in another thread and apologies if it has, but I can't find it momentarily.

The screen shots show what I've been looking at for two days now. Obviously something is amiss with Automatic Update but I dunno what, or what to do about it.

Any advice, help????

Mods, please feel free to move me to the other thread I suspect exists.

I bought a Windows 8.1 Pro 32 bit CD yesterday and installed it on my Windows 7 computer everything seemed fine when it got installed i could browse on the internet using Internet Explorer, download drivers ( Audio, Mouse,Graphic ) as i always did after a clean install later i installed Windows updates and rebooted my computer so the updates can get full installed but it got stuck at 35% i thought maybe i should just wait more time but it seemed like the loading circle was also stuck i went away for 20 min and came back but nothing changed and my computer's fan kept running really fast for 20 seconds then it runs normal after that. i woke up today still facing the same problem i did a system restore and i'm here writing my problem i'm too afraid right now to reboot my computer

EDIT 1: I downloaded Microsoft Fix it for Windows 7 / 8 after running it and choosing to diagnose the Windows Updates service it fixed 3 problems i will try to install the updates again and see if it will get stuck again

Got the May batch of Windows Updates a day or two ago. Yesterday I tried to download and install all of the 14 updates, but the progress bar remained at zero. Earlier, I attempted to download and install the definition update just for Windows Defender, and that WAS successful. But once again, the rest of the .updates would not download and install. After a bit of online check, I found and ran the Windows Fix-It tool. The results of that were"
1)  Service registration is missing or corrupt.2)  Windows update error 0X80070057(2016-5-12 T-05_30_45P3)  A few lines of "problem fixed" without a description.
Go to Windows update screen to find scary red shield advising to update my computer. Under "most recent check" it says--->Never, with the same under "updates were installed--->Never. When I go to update history it shows that prior updates were downloaded and installed successfully, except for this last batch. So what I am getting now is just "checking for updates" endlessly.
Any ideas what I should  do next

I reformatted my HP laptop so it restored it to how it comes when first out of the box, because I was having issues with a few programs and it started to run slowly.

I now have 130 windows 7 updates. I can occasionally download some of them by doing them 1 at a time, other times they don't work. I tried downloading 10 because I had a run of some working but the installation phase is stuck at 0%.

How can I fix this? I can't sit here all month downloading 1 update at a time.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Many people would tell you that you should start over and do a clean install:

I was thinking today that I haven't heard from windows update in a long time, so I decided to open it and check. Apparently I haven't downloaded an update since December 2015. I have tried unsuccessfully to update, but it seems to get stuck on looking for updates. I have used the windows update repair tool to no avail (it "fixes" some problems and then says that there was an error message 0x80070003 for windows update and it could not fix it). I have tried several other fixes and nothing is working. I need to update because I can't use my windows xbox one controller without the most recent windows updates.

Let me know if you need other information. Thank you very much

I rebooted my computer last night for the first time in a couple of weeks. I chose the update and restart option and everything started normally. After a while - 20 minutes maybe - it was up to 14 of 37 updates. It was still stuck at 14 of 37, 16+ hours later. I started composing this question on my phone and noticed that I was at the login screen on my laptop. I signed in normally then checked to see if there were still updates pending but there were none. I started catching up on email and everything seemed fine, then the computer started getting unresponsive. I tried to reboot and found I had an update option. I chose that and it told me there were 27 updates just minutes after saying there were no updates and that was only minutes after it had been stuck on update 14 of 37! What the heck is going on here? Is there anything I need to do to verify that all necessary updates have been completely and successfully installed?

I am running 8.1 on an ASUS laptop.

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

I have tried several other "solutions" and still no help. And I have temporarily disable my anti-virus programs as well, no help.

I saved some Windows 98 updates to my computer as advised in PC Advisor May 2003 to be able to install them again if the hard disk crashed. Unfortunately a number of these update files (.EXE)saved themselves onto the desktop but unlike other files they can't be dragged into another folder as this just creates a shortcut. Deleting them (including emptying the wastebasket) makes them disappear but they reappear next time I log on. Any ideas for tidying away these files?

Answer:Windows 98 updates stuck on desktop

you could try cut and paste see if that will allow you to place them in a folder

Changing DNS to 4.2.2.2
Cleared %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder
Resetting IE to default
Removing AV
Removing Malwarebytes
Booting system in clean state
Removing from Domain
Checking firewall for rules
July 2016 Update Rollup
Updating windows update agent
Cleard %windir%\system32\catroot2 folder
Cleared "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\application data\Microsoft\Network\downloader Folder
Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter and Fixit Tool
Ran sfc /scannow
Ran chkdsk

Answer:Windows Updates Stuck For More than 24 Hours

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt. Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.
dism /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
Please replace partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter.  When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.
