Dell 5548 speaker volume fluctuates, Headphone Jack tight and no webcam response

Question: Dell 5548 speaker volume fluctuates, Headphone Jack tight and no webcam response

Hello Jimco,
I have a Dell 5548 with a 1080p touch screen, Core i5 &12GB of Ram. After updating to windows 10 I have had a number of issues with this laptop.
1)The most annoying of all is that the speaker volume fluctuates from high to low at any given setting which is extremely frustrating. One time its loud then all of a sudden it reduces then a few seconds later its up again. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue as this didn't happen on windows 8.1?
2)The Headphone Jack is too tight. If I try too insert any earphones or headphones it will go in to a certain degree then i have to apply force but it still wont go in. If i try to apply more force it seems that it will break as there is a creaking sound. sound from the speakers isn't fine and i cant even use earphones :(
3) My laptop has a real sense camera and it just stops using its infrared sensors or depth sensors when setting up windows hello. It tells me to place my face in the centre of the screen and then no response even though i can see what the webcam is showing me.
I hope you can answer my questions as it would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
My dell inspiron 14z 5423 no longer have sound from both the speakers and the earphone jack.
This happened after I replaced the Battery and also the hard disk from 500gb to 1TB and upgraded to windows 10.
Before this, I was using Windows 8.1 and everything was working well. I have returned it back to windows 8.1 but the no audio problem still persist.
Also, my speaker symbol on the task bar shows a "cross" sign with "no audio output installed" displaying when I hover on the speaker icon.
Please I need help. have tried all options i can think of including driver updates.
One more thing, the sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.

Thanks

Answer:No Sound From Speaker & Headphone Jack On my Dell Inspiron 14z 5423 After Chnaging BAttery and Hard Disk

pizzz4allthe sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.
Hello. Download this Win8.1 IDT audio driver for the Inspiron 14z 5423. There are two versions there -- get the one that says "File Format Hard Drive". Follow the installation instructions and see if the driver shows up in Device Manager.
If it doesn't, perform the PSA or ePSA sound test. If no sound during the test then there has been hardware failure. Could have happened during parts replacement.

I had to have the hard drive replaced in my computer due to a defect in the drive. Ever since the hard drive was replaced, the head phone plug-in that is on the face of the tower does not work, but the speaker plug-in that is located in the back of the tower, works just fine.

I cannot figure out what is wrong. The audio driver installed for my system was obtained from the Dell website along with the majority of my other drivers.
Any help would be great.

Alright, so here's the problem. I just recently got this computer and plugged it into the VGA port and the sound wouldn't work. I plugged Logitech External Speakers into it and the computer didn't even acknowledge that it was there. I plugged in Headphones to see if those worked and they didn't aswell. I asked the guy who I got the computer from and he said that it (sound) would work when plugged in using HDMI. So I did that and the sound does work, but only through the TV speakers. It still doesn't acknowledge the speakers or the headphone s when plugged in. So I wen t and grabbed some other speakers I had and tried those and It still didn't recognize the speaker. My question is: How Do I Get My Computer To Recognize My Speakers? Any help would be much appreiciated.

Hi,

Thought I would start a new thread as noone seemed to post a definitive answer to the issue the poster was having regarding their headphones. I was having a similar problem while trying to watch Youtube, the speakers on my HP 625 were playing the sound even though I had my headphones plugged in. Not quite sure how I resolved it for myself, but when I opened up the IDT audio control panel within the 'hardware and sound' section of windows control panel, the speakers needed to be set to both default communication and default playback device. As well as making sure within this control panel that the headphones were selected for the appropriate jack, this solved the problem for me. I'm not sure if any of this stuff was different before I opened up the IDT control panel since I'd never opened it up before, but like I say the problem was solved so hopefully this may be of some help to anyone having the same problem.

Answer:Response to 'Windows 7 hates my headphone jack'

Thanks for the posting. FYI, I have the same problem on a Samsung laptop. It is intermittent, but the headphones sometimes quit working. I can get them to work via dual boot in Ubuntu just fine. My sound card is Realtek, and the headphones never show up there, so there is no default setting to change... it HAS to be an OS issue. Right?

I have a 2.1 speaker set attached to my laptop that does not have its own headphone jack. So in order to listen to headphones I have to unplug the 2.1 from the headphone jack and plug in the headphones. I tried a cheap splitter but that didn't sound good.

What I would like is something that had two jacks that allowed me to keep the 2.1 plugged in all the time in one jack and when I want to use the headphones I could just plug them into the other jack. I would like both jacks whether used together or solo to have the same sound quality as a single jack... with no degradation in sound.

Lastly, I would like to be able to mute the 2.1 (using volume control on the speaker set) and still get great controllable sound out of the jack that have the headphones plugged in.

Is there something like that? Thanks.

Hello I've bought my Lenovo laptop about half a year ago. From the very beginning the headphone audio jack had some problems, there would be no sound when headphones are plugged in, however restarting the laptop usually helped. I have not had this problem for a few months until now. When I plug in headphones, no sound comes out and restarting the computer does not help. Furthermore, the sound of the laptop speakers seems to be a big different than it normally used to be - the sound is a bit lower and so to say ''dimmer''. Please let me know I could fix it.

Answer:whats the speaker headphone jack on the cd drive??

its analogue sound for cd's. its normally not used. in fact i think its been sort of obsolete since windows 98. there is an option somewhere in media player to disable digital sound for cd's or something along those lines which will probably allow you to use headphones on the front jack

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.

Hi, Omarattia  ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

You can also start by flushing out all static, remove battery and AC adaptor and hold down power button for about 15 seconds.

Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

I'm guessing that it's probably just a compatibility issue... or just how it is, but I'm curious:

I updated my laptop from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro a while back. It started out as just a minor inconvenience, but it's getting to be very annoying. When I plug in my external speakers (via the headphone jack) or my headphones, Windows doesn't automatically switch the sound output to the headphone jack. I have to manually switch it ("Manage Audio Devices"). The same is true for the reverse, when I unplug my headphones.

Is there any way around this, or is it likely an issue with the compatibility of my sound card?

Please and thank you!

Answer:Headphone jack/on board speaker issue

Do you have the correct Windows 7 drivers for your Audio system? The XP drivers are not compatible and you need at a minimum Vista drivers as Vista and Windows 7 handle sound functions differently than XP.

On most newer "HD Audio" systems the jack is "auto sensing" and switches "logically". On many older PC systems that is a mechanical function with the jack.

On my C50 the sound is fine through the laptop speakers but when I plug in a jack to the headphone socket the sound only comes out through the right speaker. When you do a test of the IDTspeaker, you can hear both left and right sounds but both come from the right speaker (like its in mono). There is no headphone device appearing in the sound playback devices - looking at some fora it looks like there should be. I have reinstalled the idt driver from Toshiba site (2014). I have also used windows to get the latest sound driver but none of this helps. it did work before and seems to have gone wrong after a windows 8 update. Can anyone help please?

After upgrading from windows 8 to windows 10 my webcam is not functioning properly. The webcam was completely green and non funcitonal.
I uninstalled the old drivers and installed the recommended lasted drivers, but now the webcam is just entirely blurry.
The webcam is the Intel RealSense 3D Camera F200.
The two drivers I have installed are:

Intel(R) RealSense(TM) 3D Camera (Front F200) Depth
Intel(R) RealSense(TM) 3D Camera (Front F200) RGB
Intel(R) RealSense(TM) 3D Camera Virtual Drive

What can I do to fix this? Has anyone had a similar issue? Is there some sort of camera setting where I can tweak the quality or is this just a driver issue with windows 10?

Thanks in advance,

It seems that when i use either Earphones or Headphones, The sounds coming through them seem low to me. But coming through the computers speakers seem fine to me. I updated the Realtek Sound Driver twice already. Does anybody from Acer support or from the community have any suggestions?

Answer:why is my speaker volume so low, through Headphone...

BookHog92,

Could you please provide the model of which notebook you are using?

Do the headphones/earphone have their own separate volume that can be adjusted. I know that the ones I use have a separate dial I can use that adjusts the sound independently from whatever I have set Windows to.

Is the volume in general low, or only using certain applications/programs. If you right click on the volume icon in the task bar and choose "Open Volume Mixer" is everything in use turned up?

Answer:Audio combo jack vs headphone/earphone with mic and speaker connector

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

On your computer the audio jacks along with the USB port are mounted on a card that is separate from the motherboard.  The two are then connected with a ribbon cable.  If your headphone jack is inoperable with more than one pair of headphones and the USB port does not work would be a good indication of a problem with the card.

Just to rule out a possible hardware conflict try doing a BIOS reset.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If the reset did not correct the problem then I would suspect either the audio card is faulty or the ribbon cable has become disconnected.  In that case I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for additional service especially if your warranty is still active.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

Hello there,

The headphone jack on my laptop broke some time ago, so I had to buy a USB replacement jack. Under Windows XP this worked brilliantly, but since I've upgraded to Windows 7 (Home Premium, 32bit) I've been experiencing problems: namely, I have no control over the volume. Whether the volume is all the way up or just above zero, the sound is blaringly loud through the headphones. (I can still Mute the volume.) I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the jack via the Device Manager, but I haven't had any success. Help?
Thanks,

USB headsets' volumes are controlled by Windows via the drivers for said headset. IF the drivers are not installed or improperly installed, you may have a tough time doing anything with it.

Some headsets also have volume controls in-line on the cord. Is this the case for you?

What headset do you have?

Also check your device manager under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. If your headset is actually listed there like it should be, it should not have any ! or ? symbols on it as well.

Hi,
I am using a Latitude 3540 and trying to get a conference phone working through the Headphone port. The phone has a mic and speaker cable that go into an adaptor and then into the headphone port on the laptop. As soon as its connected the volume slowly decreases on its own.
We have tested the same setup but using a Lattitude E6330 and it works fine.
I hve fully updated all drivers.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Ross

Answer:Headphone Jack Changes Volume Automatically

Hello Ross. The Latitude E6330 has IDT audio hardware, which Dell does not use anymore, and driver. The 3540 has Realtek audio hardware & driver. The 2 laptops don't have any drivers in common, so probably a driver issue with the 3540.
You could try a different driver version from the 3540 html driver page. Dell released 2 versions for Win 7, one for Win 8.1 (WB), and two for Win 10 (WT). Before installing an older version, completely remove all files of the current version, by checking the delete files box during uninstall. Other than those, you could try one directly from the Realtek site (an HD driver, not AC97).
If none of those help, keep an eye out for any audio driver and BIOS updates and try them, but I don't think Dell is supporting the laptop with updated drivers anymore. I would get a usb audio jack and try that. It would use the Windows usb native audio driver, not the Realtek's. Might not work but cheap to try.

Hi, I recently got a T430 and it's pretty nice overall, but the extremely low volume coming from the headphone jack is a major thorn in the side for me.  I've looked around at other solutions for people who have similar problems, and they all seem to point to either Conexant or SmartAudio and I can't find either of those anywhere on my machine. So is there any way to remove the volume limiting on the T430?  If so, what should I look for on my computer to adjust or remove that limit?   Running Windows 8 Pro, bought in May 2013.  Let me know if you need any other information! Thanks!

Answer:T430 Headphone Jack Volume Very Low

What kind of headphone/headset are you using? If it is a 4-pin one (with Mic) you will need the CTIA type (i.e. Apple-like).If it is an OMTP one, the Mic and Ground pin will be swapped so that audio signal will go through the microphone component and will cause speech to get distorted. (It is possible that when you hold the "music control button" the Mic and Ground pin will be shorted and you will hear sound normally.) You will need to check it. Earlier Sony Ericsson phones comes with OMTP one but later ones are CTIA. Not sure for others but you might be able to search that on Google. If you have a 3-pin one, then I am not sure. For my T430 I can set the volume to 10% and get pretty loud music coming out from my headphone (though I'm using Windows 7, but I don't really think it matters).

Hello,

I just recently encountered a problem with the sound on my desktop computer. As the title says, audio out of the right speaker or headphone is barely audible. It happened after returning back from school so there was probably some shaking of the computer during transit, I'm assuming this would have something to do with it. I'm fairly certain it's hardware related.

I've checked every audio setting that I'm aware of (driver software, Windows configuration, looked at the sound device properties in Windows hardware window) and can't find any reason for the low sound. All of the audio is balanced, Windows says the device is working properly, none of the configuration utilities indicate any sort of problem with the device. I've even tried playing with every setting I could fine, to see what effect it may have on the problem. Nothing really affects the problem in any way. I have also tried reinstalling the drivers.

I also have a front panel sound port that I can and have been using that works perfectly fine, though.

Here is my motherboard:

High Definition Audio

Hi,

I recently got a Clevo laptop (from Origin PC), which has Realtek audio drivers.

To try and fix some BSOD problems, i did a repair install of Windows and uninstalled/reinstalled lots of drivers (using the original driver installers provided by Origin).
But now i don't have separate volume for when the headphones are plugged in. Instead, the volume remains the same as when they are unplugged.

I set Realtek HD Audio Manager to have separate jacks (not "tie up" all inputs), but that did nothing.

When that manager app is running, it pops up a tray notification whenever the headphone is plugged or unplugged, so i know it knows when it's plugged in. However, those notifications are annoying as hell, so i don't run that app always. Besides, i never saw the notifications back when the volume was working.

I looked at the sound window from Windows control panel, and it lists the speakers and something else (digital audio, perhaps? i think it's the optic output), but no headphones. I'm not sure if it has always been that way.

By the way, i should point out that the headphones still work, and sound is not output from the speakers when they are plugged in. I just can't control the volume separately.

I can get more details when i get home. But has anyone else had this same problem, or know how to fix it?

Thanks

Answer:No separate speaker and headphone volume anymore

It would help if we knew what version of Windows you're running. Vista and later don't have the mixer that XP has.

Hello, Something is stuck inside my headphone jack (really no idea what, it looks like some amber colored resin) This caused no problems until i tried to stick my headphones in (because i didn't know there was something else inside)Now the little switch inside is activated and i can't use my normal speakers anymore. Pulling the thing out is not possible it really seems glued inside, i can remove small parts of it by scratching with a screwdriver but i see no way to remove it without a drill. I googled for ways to shut off the port so i can revert back to the normal speakers (i really don't care about losing the headphone jack, i normally only use speaker sound) It seems the installed realtek drivers allow no option to deactivate it. I tried reinstalling the realtek driver, changed registry option "EnableDynamicDevices" but didnt find the more promising "ForceDisableJD".  The Windows driver also didn't help and i didn't find any other drivers available for this notebook. The BIOS also didn't have any option for this (but maybe i'm just bad at finding it) Is there any way to disable the port on the software side or a way to disconnect the hardware? I have soldering equipment here. I really don't care for a clean solution anymore, just hoping for a way to get the sound. Thanks for your help. Edit: whoops almost forgot the essentials: this is a lenovo z510 with win7 64bit that was not pre-installed (bought without OS)

hi

i have only recently had my toshiba satellite p502 b00f for 2 months.

i have never noticed this issue before but lately when i have my heapdhones in and then (example) play music.....the music level drops slightly, and then drops again......and in my opinion to an almost tinny sound.

i am starting to believe i am going mad, and questioning my ears. speakers work fine and fantastic, volume levels up and down works fine, it is just when you plug headphones in and hit play..............music will play then drop slightly in sound then drop slightly in sound again...........this is just frustrating, annoying, unprofessional and really does worry me.

i love my laptop but righ now have a love hate relationship with it.

i just want it replaced

any help much appreciated.

I recently purchased a T430. The machine overall is great. It has everything I need, except that Audio is not a pleasant experience on either Windows 7 or Ubuntu 14.04 I stumbled across issues with sound when I first plugged in a pair of headphones (the small ones) and tried to listen to sound on both Win7 and Ubuntu 14.04 The first thing I realized is that the sound (in this case an MP3 music track) does not emit a decent/normal sound. On win7, the prime issue was a "distant" vocal sitaution where the instruments seemed somewhat clear (on a high volume setting) but the vocals seemed distant. I resolved this by: switching out my 3-pin headphones with 2-pin ipod headphones. The vocals seemed a bit better. I then assumed that this is probably a driver issue (although that doesn't make sense if it is an issue on both win7 and ubuntu 14.04). Win7 drivers are the latest (with that Dolby stuff and the version that matches the Lenovo website version)Ubuntu 14.04 drivers got updated to the PPA/latest-stable-release build (which was done a few days ago)I then thought that if the sound from 1 pair of headphones works different to another, I should investigate and perhaps diagnose that the true issue. Here is my experiments run on Ubuntu 14.04: 2 headphone options: a 3-pin standard Nokia pair && a 2-pin ipod pair1 earphone option: 2-pin, separate mic jack, but that doesn't matter, as I am testing sound outputSong: A song with a combination... I recently discovered a difference in the volume; the left speaker of the laptop has been functioning normally while there seems to be very low to no sound coming from the right speaker.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 5559 Audio - Right Speaker has low volume while the left speaker functions normally

Hello. You didn't mention the headphone jack, so if you have not yet done so, plug in headphones and see if the balance is okay in them. If the headphones check out okay, then most probably it's a problem related to the speakers.
The test for speakers is the ePSA audio test. It is a hardware test, which means that if the test  tones are very low in the right speaker, but normal in the left speaker, then there is hardware failure somewhere, related to the right speaker.
If both speakers sound normal during the test, then the problem is in the software. Do the usual things like re-install the audio driver, check the balance levels in the Sound properties, try different audio sources, etc.
Re-installing the audio driver resets the settings to their default configurations, so if you do it then you don't have to bother with things like volumes and balance settings, because they will be okay.(Also if the balance is okay through headphones, then it should be okay through the speakers too.)
Here is how to do a simple driver re-install:
1.    Open the Device Manager.2.    Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" category.3.    Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".4.    Click "uninstall".5.    Do not check the box to “delete the driver software for this device”. 6.    Restart the computer. Windows will detect your device a... Read more

hi there, i just got myself an x100e and still configuring by myself on how to use it. it runs on windows vista with 250gb. this is my first time using a lenovo and windows vista product. just a little question. i have plugged in my headphone into the audio jack. but, the sound still came out from the internal speaker. also, how do i enable the internal and external microphone? i've been experimenting with the 'sound recorder' function to know whether the mic is working or not. but, i did'nt hear any sound being recorded although i have been speaking loudly on the internal mic which located below the 'ctrl' key. or, did i got the position wrong? about the headphone, i have tried using the 'sound' in the control panel. amazingly, when i test the headphone function over there, it works fine. i mean, i hear the sound in the headphone. but, if i were to play any audio using other apps such as youtube or windows media player, the sound still came put from the internal speaker phone, although i have plugged in my headphone at the same time. am i missing something? or should i change any setting over there?  also, i keep on hearing clicking sound from my laptop. not sure whether it is coming from my hard disk or not. the clicking sound is similar to the ticking sound from a moving seconds dial on a clock. the sound usually came out whenever i am running any programs on the laptop. so far, the laptop is working fine, but, just curious about the sound.. a... Ive had the kind of same problem with what i think is the hard drive. If its sitting quit, it sound like the hard drive is spooling up and then clicks, then spools, then clicks. If I run a program that takes any computing power, it clicks away. It come from the right side of the computer, below the enter key, on my laptop. Right now there isn't anything I can do. As i need the laptop for school and if I sent it off to lenovo it would take time to get it back. Right now I am saving everything to my google documents for the time being. Ive tested the hard drive on all the lenovo hard drive tests as well as seagate ones, nothing shows to be wrong. So I just have to live with the clicking until I send it back to lenovo under the warranty. To me clicking = bad. Hello guys. I bought new dell laptop yesterday and i already faced some problems with the headphone jack. Everything is working, but when i reboot my pc without unplugging the jack, i do not get any sound from my 2.1 system. I have to unplug the jack and then plug again in order to get the sound through the speakers. I tried to look for the solution but couldn't come up with anything helpful. Reinstallation of drivers does not help. Maybe someone could help me with this issue?

I bought a new Dell Inspiron 15R about two months ago now, and since I got it the sound has been messing up.

Whenever I use headphones, some sounds still come out of my speakers. It seems that if I'm listening to one piece of audio, for example a skype call, it's fine. However, if I start doing something else at the same time, for example watching a video, the audio from that video will play from my speakers instead of my headphones (looks as if some programs have priority to play out of headphones, and everything else will play from laptop speakers)

Please help, for the moment I've disabled my speakers so sounds are forced to play out of my headphones, however this disables the sounds for some programs (Minecraft, Spotify etc)

I'd love if somebody could shead some light on my problem
Thanks!

My Dell Studio 540 has lost its output to attached speakers.  I cannot tell if the problem is caused by upgrade to Win 10 or if I have experienced a coincidental motherboard failure.  I have tried a number of fixes that include uininstalling drivers, roll back drivers, and even installing the original Vista drivers that I have from the original system disks.  Nothing works.
I do notice, by looking at the sound panel, the HDMI output seems to be operating because I can see where it indicates sound when playing some music.  However, I cannot get speakers or headphone input to work.  Even though I try the speaker plugs in any of the inputs, the sound panel still shows unconnected speakers or headphones.
So, how do I get the system to recognize that speakers have been plugged in?  Is there another driver that I can use.  To date I have tried a number of Realtek driver and configurations, to no avail

Answer:Dell Studio 540 no Speaker or Headphone Sound - Win 10

Apologies for missing your post. The Studio 540 was never validated for Windows 10.

My advice is to disable the integrated Realtek HD audio in the Bios- Advanced- Integrated Peripherals. Then install a current PCIe x1 sound card in one of the PCIe x1 slots on the motherboard. A current sound card will provide Windows 10 drivers.

I been having problems with my headphone jack since I got my new laptop. My laptop has been refusing to recognize my headphones. I plug them in, the sound keeps coming directly from the computer. I check the playback devices, headphones are not even on there. I've read quite a few posts and tried to fix this issue. The only thing that seemed to work was manually updating my drivers with device manager. However, if I shut my computer, or unplug my headphones and then put them back, the issue arises again.
Obviously the issue is not my headphones, they work just fine for the period of time that the issue is fixed. I've update everything that I know to update. If anyone has any other suggestions then I will gladly try them.
I'm not sure if this is important or not, but I am using Windows 10.

You need to buy/acquire a 3.5mm stereo screw plug.

There`s no point trying to mess with the mic plug.Even if you could
connect it,you`d only get mono.

The other socket you refer to,is most likely a Line IN.

Hi,
In this case the system is working as per design. When the headphone's are plugged in the systems ask's you which is the device you chose for audio output. In this case check if the headphone's are selected as the primary device for audio output then this could be the situation.
Hoping this helps.

Hey,
I just got a brand new Inspiron 15 5000 directly from Dell and it doesn't detect headphones plugged into the 1/8" jack.
I've plugged two different pairs of headphones in and neither appears on the list if I go to control panel > hardware and sound > sound > manage audio devices > playback.
In both cases the audio on the internal speakers continues unchanged.
I went to Device Manager > Sound, Video, and Gaming Controllers > Realtek Audio right clicked and selected "update driver" and I was told the driver was already working on the current update.
One pair of headphones is a Sony mdr-7506 and the other was a pair of cheap earbuds. Both work fine with other audio devices

First, make sure the headset is fully inserted.  If it is, you should get a popup asking what you plugged in..  It sounds like you are not getting that for whatever reason.  Have you installed any third party audio apps?

When I listen to audio with headphones it comes out crackly and distorted, however, when I connect a speaker via aux cable in the same headphone jack it sounds normal. Audio from the laptop's speakers in normal as well. I have checked the headphones and it's not them that's the issue.  The crackling happens with all my headphones.
The problem is very recent. A couple of days ago I picked up my headphones unaware they were plugged into my XPS. The jack was pulled out of the headphone jack when I picked up the headphones and it's been an issue ever since. I would have immediately assumed that It's a hardware thing with the jack although, I didn't pull it out very hard nor did it come out at a weird angle so I can't see how that could've of broken it. Also, the jack still works perfectly with external speakers so I'm not too sure what's wrong with it.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be an enormous help:)

Answer:No Sound after using Dell Dimension 8400 front headphone jack

It is a simple mechanical problem. When you plug in the headphone jack, a spring leaf is moved breaking the circuit to the speakers. When you remove the headphone jack, the spring leaf is supposed to move back to the normal closed position. The metal used to construct your headphone jack was made of a metal too soft to spring back into position. You will have to open the computer case and bend the contacts back to the correct position. If you are electronics savvy you can replace the jack -- or you should ask Dell to replace your computer under warranty.

So the other day i was spinning a fidget-spinner whilst watching a video on my laptop but then the spinner dropped and hit the keyboard, and when this happened the screen went completely black and there was this terrifying loud grinding noise like the laptop was screaming in pain or something, then i held the power button until it shut down. And then when i restarted the computer everything seemed fine until today when i realised the headphone jack isn't working. I've tried it with two headphones so far. How the heck could this happen? are Dell laptops so fragile that a fidget-spinner could permanently damage it? or is there a fix somewhere that i'm missing.

All speakers designed for a computer have built in amplifiers.  Audio outputs on a computer are not powerful enough to power normal speakers without some kind of amplification. As an alternative, You can run an audio output from a computer into a stereo and then into regular speakers.

Equal Left & Right Speaker Balance Causes T61 Audio Volume To Go To Zero on Front Audio Jack. -- SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD AudioWhen the left and right sound channels on the T61 sound card are set to be equal, no sound comes out of the front speaker jack for IE8 or Windows Media Player. Shifting the L and R off equal (e.g. Left 20 and Right 30) the sound comes back on. Moving them back toward equal setting slowly decreases the speaker volume until it is gone. I reloaded and reinstalled the SoundMAX driver, but no change. I really didn't notice this until we started with iTunes which definitely notices L and R levels on playback.  Setting L = R and, whoops, no sound at all. And, this doesn't happen to the onboard T61 speakers.  They work as you would expect the L & R to work. I am setting speaker balance from Control Panel -> Sound  -> Speakers -> Levels -> Balance This is really bizarre. BTW, 64-bit Vista Any suggestions?   I'd like equal L & R balance AND volume from the front jack. Message Edited by rmyork on 08-14-2009 09:51 AM

Hello,

I just purchased a new notebook, and I have a bit of a problem. When I plug headphones into the side headphone jack, the sound quality is downright terrible. Very shortly I noticed that it didn't sound as good/decent as my older notebook.

The speakers seem to sound fine, well you know - as good as laptops can sound.

Right now I have two notebooks side by side:
a friends Samsung Series 3 (NP300E5C), with Windows 8 (upgraded from W7) / Microsoft High Definition audio
my Toshiba L50 Windows 8 / Realteck High Definition

I dont have my older notebook anymore, but I do remember it sounding better. Comparing this Toshiba to the Samsung (both sitting on the desk side-by-side), the Toshiba sounds a little better through the speakers, but there is no comparison with the headphone - The Samsung is pretty decent while the Toshiba makes me cry.

Now granted, I'm not expecting a symphony, but if I cant solve this I'm going to have to sell the Toshiba.

I've tried uninstalling Realtek, but I couldn't get the sound to work.
Re-installing Realtek solved nothing

One thing I noticed, there is no 'headphone' icon in the device manager (Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Sound / or simply right click the audio icon in the taskbar). Are the headphones not high definition or something?

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone here will be able to solve this problem that I've had for over a year now. Ive researched and done every possible "solution" that I have found on the internet and nothing so far has fixed it. Here's the problem:

I bought a new latop which has Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) installed. While im playing music (mainly mp3s) whether it be in Winamp, WMP, any program--the volume on songs will fluctuate. One second it will be loud and the next it will go real low and then loud again. It sounds as if its trying level the sound or something. I've done the "solutions" that I've found online, I.E. Under Sounds>Communications>"Do Nothing" -didnt work. I've also checked "Disable all enhancements" under speaker properties. It does seem to help by doing this BUT (and a huge but) then the music sounds terrible. It loses bass and just sounds terrible. I've also tried updating the driver, tried older drivers and nothing seems to work. I'm no expert but I do think it has something to do with Windows 7. Ive had Windows XP, Vista and never had this problem with playing my music before. Also from what I've read online most think the problem is something to do with Windows 7.

Here are my specs:

*Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
*Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio-Driver Version 4.98.60.50

If anyone can help me with this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Answer:Volume/Audio Fluctuates in & out Windows 7

Does the Conexant audio come with its own control panel? I seem to remember I had one on my laptop before but removed it later.
I've never experienced this issue myself. Your guess about communications settings was a good one - see if maybe your microphone is inadvertently enabled and still picking up sound.

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

Software

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

Hardware

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Any help appreci... Read more

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

I haven't used one that had the port as a combined unit but I would assume you would need a headphone set with mic that has combined wiring, such as sets used for cell phones and such. You can also purchase an adapter that will split the port into 2 ports for mic and headphones.
Hope that gives you an idea

The green in realtek hd audio manager is for headphone & red is for mic. In the image, it is shown that headphone not connected & mic connected. But even headphone not connected shows up, sound coming form headphone.

I want to get sound from only headphone when headphone is connected. Is this a hardware problem ?

Please help....

Answer:Sound coming from both headphone & speaker but headphone is not detect

My Realtek HD Audio Manager has more options than yours.

Also, I notice you only have the microphone in the Recording Section of the Sound Panel. RIGHT click in an empty space in that Panel and then LEFT click Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. The Stereo Mix should be shown and you can enable that and make it the default Recording device.

Where did you get the RealTek driver that you installed? If you are not using the Lenovo supplied sound driver, get that and install it as a first step. I have a Lenovo Laptop and it has Stereo Mix and other functions. I haven't looked at the RealTek HD manager so I'm not sure what all it shows.

Well, I uninstalled my audio drivers and noticed that there was a red led shining from inside the 3.5mm headphone jack, which I assume is a mini optical audio (digital) combo 3.5mm audio (analog) jack, and I am figuring that it determins if there is an optical plug or not using drivers, which is why it turned on when I unistalled my audio drivers. I would like to know for sure before I go and buy a mini optical to toslink adpater cable so I can get better audio quality out (the digital interface does not suffer from the interference that the analog does right?). I did some research (research is a bit of an overstatement) and found no sites that mentioned it, so I have decided to turn to the forums. So, is this an optical jack combo? And, how will it work in terms of the drivers, will it just auto select? Thanks.

Hi, I just bought a dell 5567 laptop. The problem is that when I try to connect ordinary 3.5mm earphones  to my laptop's headphone port it doesn't go all the way in. Do I need an adapter for this?

Answer:3.5 mm headphone jack won't fit in headphone/mic combo jack.

JSmith887Do I need an adapter for this?
No it should go in. We have been getting reports of tight jacks. Don't know if it's a quality control issue. Try some different ones and insert more firmly than normally.
If none will go in all the way, but you do hear the audio, I wouldn't be too concerned. If not getting audio (the selection popup does not appear) because it won't go in, then contact tech support or send it back.

I built a new computer, with an ASRock motherboard, z77 thing, and installed Windows 7 and everything. It came with some audio things like THX TruStudio.

And I notice that the volume fluctuates very noticeably when I'm playing sound files or video files. It can be a difference where people talking at normal volume is barely audible, like a whisper, then a sudden voice or musical piece coming in is close to ear-splitting when the volume is turned up to better hear the previous bits.

And I noticed this happens in all the same places in certain files, and is the same across several different media players.

I tried shutting off the THX TruStudio, and altering the Realtek settings constantly, but it did nothing.

I found that the only thing that seems to work is turning on "Loudness Equalization" in the SPeaker properties enhancement. I've noticed the strong differences in volume while playing a media file and clicking/unclicking the Loudness Equalization in mid-play.

What's happening here? Should I keep Loudness Equalization on permanently or is it supposed to just be a special feature of some sort if I have a surround sound system or something? (I don't)

Answer:New computer, volume fluctuates in certain media files

THX TruStudio doesnt do that, im also using ASrock mobo with THX, and if you have VIA Hd audio deck you might want to check the settings in that.

Hello Forum, I hope I'm posting this in the right place...?

My device:G780 Notebook (M843RGE I3-2370M), Windows 7
Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 Version  8.54.32.50 (Smart Audio: 6.0.131.0)

Situation:My headphone jack is broken. Repair is too expensive. Instead, I want to redirect the audio signal to the microphone jack.

Problem:This seems not to be possible with my SmartAudio interface (Screenshot below). But I found a screenshot of exactly the function I need called "Jack Configuration" in the Help section (second screenshot below). It looks like I dont have the right system configuration (whatever that means, I'm not an IT/PC expert ...) to use this feature.

My question:
Is there any way I can reconfigure the audio jacks on my notebook? Do I need another Conexant Audio Driver software and if yes, which one?

I'm grateful for any helpful reaction!

Hey there,

I've tried all the normal things - online troubleshooting through Dell and Windows (running 64 bit Win 7 Home Premium), plus updating drivers, uninstall/reinstall device, checking through media software settings (VLC, iTunes) - and cannot seem to figure out why my LEFT speaker is playing at what sounds like 10-20%, versus the RIGHT one playing at 100%. No major update or change predated this issue. Simple Windows Update stuff, but I purposely don't let Windows touch my "manufacter" drivers etc.

Anyone with a clue as to what else I can try?

THANKS!

How can I uninstall Dell Audio and only have the legacy Realtek Driver and Software in my XPS 14 (L421x)?
I installed some time age the default audio driver that I got from "Dell Drivers", this installed the "Dell Audio" + "MAXX AUDIO 4". I already uninstalled this thing, run CCleaner, deleted the folders, and downloaded and installed the legacy Realtek R 2.73 driver, but this thing (Dell Audio) is always installing with the driver.
My system audio is ridiculously loud. I need to put my system audio in somewhat 5~15 / 100% to get "normal audio", the only way I get realistic "normal audio range" is using my SteelSeries Wireless Headset with USB, this way the system audio goes to 100% automatically and I control the audio with the scroll located in the headset, even in 100% max audio, I get a "normal 100%", it's loud, but not EXTREME like the notebook audio!
Another problem, when I plugin my Apple Earpods, they simple doesn't work, I already tested them with tons of devices at home, and they are working great. The system doesn't even recognize them.
I think that everything would be resolved if I could install the Leagacy Realtek drivers & software, not this *** loaded with bloatware from Dell, I don't care about "MAXX Audio", "MaxxSense" and all this BS. If you look with attention, all the settings located in this "Dell Audio" menu are the same in the Real... Read more

I forgot to mention in the main post, and I can't edit it, so here it goes:
First, Sometimes I need to run LiveUSB Linux distros in this notebook, and the audio in them is all great, realistic audio range, 100% loud but not extreme, everything OK.
Second, I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro up-to-date.

Answer:headphone jack broken off in headphone plug in

TOMMYSS,
If you purchased complete care from Dell you can call into Dell Alienware Support at 1 (877) 330-9732. If you did not you can possibly take it back to the store you purchased it from to see if they can help you. You can also try removing it yourself. Just make sure that it is unplugged before attempting to remove it.

Hi @chadhogan121 Welcome to the HP Support Community! I saw your post regarding the problems with sound only coming out on one side of the headphones. I will be happy to help you with that. Have you tried a different set of headphones to see if the same thing happens? This HP document No Sound from Speaker will show you how to use the built-in Windows troubleshooter. Give that a try.

Well I tried plugging in my headphones into the head phone jack, and its works externally, but there is no sound coming out of my head phones. I am wondering if theres some program I have to run to make it work correctly. Also why is there not a microphone jack?

Thanks for posting and Welcome to Lenovo Community,

the machine has combo audio jack ,which is 1 socket for the speakers and the microphone
you need to buy a new headphone with combo audio jack or get an adapter to fix this issue

let me know if that fix the issue or not

My speakers on my Yoga 2 Pro work fine.  Today, I plugged in headphones and only sound came through the right ear side.  I checked the headphones themselves with my phone and they worked fine.  I got earbuds out to test them.  The earbuds had sound only coming out on the left side.  Again, tested the earbuds with my phone and they worked fine.  It is the headphone jack in the Yoga Pro for sure.  Suggestions?

Hello,
I have trouble as described in the topic,
I have two most old laptop models, Dell Precision M6300 & Dell Latitude D630.
When laptops is docked to replicator potr dock stations D/APR (PR01X) or D/DOCK (PD01X) - bigger one model with DVD port,

headphone jack port not working under Windows 10 Pro x64 installed on both laptops.

On M6300 previously was installed Windows 7 Ultimate and on D630 was Windows 8.1.
On Dell  M6300 on Win 7 Ult. headphone jack port worked properly.
On Dell D630 on Win 8.1 I'm not sure due I do not used this on it (more years ago when it was on Win XP headphone jack port worked properly)
So when Ms start delivering updates do Win 10, I did it on doth laptops, everything on both models working fine, but only this headphone jack port in D/APR (PR01X) or D/DOCK (PD01X) wouldn't like to work when I'm dockind Dell M6300 (D630 I docked only
for test if on this one jack port will work or not) but not working too like on M6300.
So loks like drivers whih was made oryginally for Win Vista x64 ale which was workable for Windows 7 64b wouldn't like to work on Windows 10.
Maybe You have some tips what to do with this to press them to work?

Hi,

I am using a Tiny Media Notebook PIII, 700, Windows 98 SE. The computer is about four years old, and by now the headphone jack, which I use as my sound out port, is about fryed. The contacts have deteriated, and I can not replace the jack, as it is connected to the motherboard. Thus, aside from opting for a usb sound out, such as taking up the Soundblaster MP3+ option, I was wondering if I could reprogram the way in which sound is connected to external devices such as headphones. There are three jacks on the front of my computer: the headphone jack, the microphone jack and er I think it is a line out jack - the later jack which I have never used. Is there anyway I can swop/substitute the connection via the headphone jack say for the microphone jack or line out jack. Is there anyway I could do this?

Answer:Substituting the headphone jack with the microphone jack

No, afraid not. Each jack has it's own circuitry which provides for the needed resistance and other parameters. What you could do, if you got to the mobo itself, is to physically replace the jack but that's a major pain on a laptop.

You can try two things, one is to use alcohol and a Q-Tip to thoroughly clean the jack, then use a small bit of steel wool to sand inside with and then again with the alcohol and two, if the jack's worn too big for a tight connection, is to go to Radio Shack and buy a plug in adapter for that size jack. Some come with a slightly oversized male end and then you could plug into the female end and have a tight connection.

I'd like to plug my speakers into the back speaker jack and headphones to the front jack. I can't do this and have both work at the same time. I have a cheapo Insight speaker with a volume puck that lets me plug a headphone jack but then the speakers turn off.

Seems to me with front panel and rear panel jacks I should be able to do this but so far, I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Answer:How to configure headphone jack and speak jack together

Depends on the sound card you got. Realtek HD Audio Manager has a Device Advanced Settings option at top right, You can un-tick "Mute rear output ..." and see if it works.

I purchased  a  3.5mm 4 Position TRRS Male to 2x 3 Position TRS Female Headset Splitter Adapter for my hyperx cloud headphones to plug into my XPS 15, except the microphone isn't working when its plugged in.
When I plug them in a window comes up 'which device did you plug in?' Mic in, Line in, Dell Devices (lists random unknown devices to me), Headphones/headset - headphones medium, external speakers - external speakers medium. Are these details correct? should something about the microphone come up also? I go to sound options, recording and it's still using the microphone in the laptop.
I tested the headphones on another laptop without the jack and the microphone on the headset is working great. So it's either the splitter isn't doing it's job... or something to do with the laptop, any ideas?

Answer:XPS 15 9560 Headphone jack function as a mic jack?

Well for your case, the headSET option would be correct, since that means a device that offers both headphones (audio out) and a mic -- but note that you do apparently also have a Mic In option, though this would prevent audio output to the headphones.  However, if selecting the headset option isn't working, the issue with the TRRS "standard" is that it isn't a standard. The industry never agreed on which pins would be used for which connectors (Ground, Mic, Left Audio, Right Audio).  I think Samsung did it one way and Apple did it another, for example, and this of course causes interoperability issues.  So if choosing "headset" isn't working, it's probably because the XPS is expecting Option A and your splitter is wired for Option B.Theoretically, given that the audio chipset allows the pins to be dynamically assigned to various purposes depending on the device that's plugged in, it MIGHT be possible to have a "Headset" and "Headset (Alternate Mode)" device option in order to accommodate both TRRS configurations, but I seem to recall one of the TRRS implementation differences being where the Ground pin was placed, and maybe that pin can't be reassigned simply via software, which might explain the absence of such an option. Sorry!

Answer:Headphone jack to PC audio jack.

If the Recorder as a output jack, you need by one that as that size of jack, also check if it needs stereo or mono to a input jack that is stereo to fit the input of the Laptop i.e microphone jack socket

I too spent ridiculous amount of time being transferred and put on hold until someone said the broken lid hinge is not covered under warranty.   The laptop sits on TV stand and is used as multimedia device to the TV.  All I do is open the lid, press the power button and close the lid.  I have a usb mouse and keyboard connected to navigate.  I even paid extended warranty in case of defects.  I truly believe that there is a flaw in design and there should be a fix to this.  If I don't get this repaired by dell, they may avoid my warranty.  This seems to be a loosing battle.

Hey,
I have a Dell inspiron 15 5548 with a regular lcd (1366x768) and I am planning on upgrading my lcd to a better lcd (1920x1080). On eBay I've found different 1920x1080 lcd screens (touch and non-touch). Is it possible to upgrade to a 1920x1080 touchscreen with my motherboard?
Kind regards,
Thomas

Answer:Dell inspiron 15 5548 touchscreen upgrade

To upgrade the resolution, you'll need the screen AND most likely a new wiring harness (very rarely does one harness work with both resolutions).
To upgrade to a touchscreen, you basically need the entire top half of the system - screen complete with wiring harness, bezel, back cover and hinges -- these parts are not interchangeable with non-touch systems.

Hi Guys,
I have a Dell 5548 with a 1080p touch screen, Core i5 5th Gen and 12GB RAM. After the upgrade to windows 10 from windows 8.1 my laptop has been facing numerous issues. The major ones are as follows:
1)The speakers are not working properly. While playing video or music the volume goes from loud to soft at a given volume setting as in its playing at a particular volume then after a few seconds the volume suddenly goes down than again after a few seconds it goes to its original volume and the cycle repeats itself, which is pretty annoying.
2) To make matters worse then earphone/headphone jack is too tight. The pin does go in to a certain degree after which if you apply force there is a cracking sound and seems that it will break if i apply pressure. Eve after that it wont go in.
3)My laptop has Intel's  Real Sense Camera. It works fine as a webcam but its depth and other sensors don"t seem to work. It is detected but in games there is no response from these sensors while the game awaits its response. Likewise I can't even complete the Windows Hello setup where it doesn't move on when it tells me to place my face in the center; I keep placing my face in the center but it deosnt respond from there on.
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.
Thank you.
