Preferred Solution: BitLocker Drive Encryption and if you copy these files to another drive or a different PC, they're not automatically decrypted.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large
size. During the encryption I needed to disconnect it so I paused the encryption like it says to do before removing or changing any files on it. I then plugged my drive into a newer laptop I have that operates on Windows 10,. I was prompted for the Bitlocker
Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,
there for I cannot just reset my password using the key and get back to normal again. Any way to find the lost number to the key? As I do have the rest of it written correctly please help tha... Read more

While using BitLocker Drive Encryption feature, i selected the settings for using the USB to store the security key. But, once I restarted my PC, BitLocker didn't recognized the USB and went into recovery mode.

Can anyone suggest as to why the USB key was not taken into consideration?

Answer:BitLocker Drive Encryption

Windows Vista didn't provided any means by which a user working on Windows XP could access a shared folder of an BitLocker encrypted drive. But, this feature was provided in Win 7 in the form of BitLocker To Go feature.

So, my question is, isn't it hampers the main motive that was behind BitLocker Drive Encryption feature?

hi hw r u i want to know abt the drive encryption option in windw 7 i used Bitlocker drive encryption to lock or save my drive data(confidential data) frm others. ques is that this encryptn method is right i mean it will damage my hard disk or not . kindly tell me and if u tell me more methods for protection i really appreciate u.thanks

Answer:Bitlocker drive encryption

It will not damage the HDD just make sure you save the "Key" in a save place not on the computer (A hard copy on paper and a digital copy on a thumb drive two backups of the key is best) also the Windows OS partition or HDD can not be encrypted using Bitlocker.

I have been having some issues when trying to turn Bitlocker on in C:

I have followed the instructions as per this forum to enable a Startup key in gpedit.msc as I dont have TPM which worked.

After following the instructions, Windows Bitlocker asked me to insert a USB to save the startup key to. This appeared to save and then moved onto the next step where I took down the recovery key etc... and finally restarted to make sure my system was compatible before encryption started.

Upon restart, Windows said that it couldnt find a key on the USB drive. After further investigation I found that windows did not save the key to the USB after all even checked as a hidden file. It will save the text file (recovery key) to usb but not the bek file for the startup key.

I have tried this several times but each time it wont save although the system dosent say there has been a problem and moves on to the next stage.

The USB is a 2gb cruzer with the smart drive software removed and re-formatted to NTFS. I have also tried this on other USB drives with no luck and the USB drives work as Iam able to write other things to it?

Any help would be greatly appriciated as I have searched this forum and MS forums with no luck.

I wanted to encrypt my Western Digital Portable 500 GB HDD so my data would be safe.
I turned on the Bitlocker for this hard disk and set the password.
After that it started Encrypting..

I knew that it will take a long time so i went to university for lecture.
When i came back the encryption dialouge was stuck at 12.4 %.

I kept waiting for some time but it wasn't working i pulled out the cable and inserted again...

I inserted the key and it unlocked with autorun dialogue and Encrypting Dialogue. [Snap Attached]

Clicking on *Continue without Scanning* brings the my computer windows and it starts searching but doesn't open the harddisk.

All this happens everytime i plug back, i have lost access to my all data thats stored on that harddisk... In my system there iz only 80GB Sata Hard containing OS.

I have tried one thing.
chkdsk /r it worked for a while but on 4th stage it stopped.

Please Can you Guys help me ? i want it to complete the encryption or decrypt whatever it has encrypted or damaged :(

I ran the manage-bde -status command of my encrypted OS Volume Drive and it shows 100% encrypted.
Does this mean that BitLocker encrypted the ENTIRE drive?

During the BitLocker setup, I did select to Encrypt the Entire Drive instead of the Used Space option.
I just want to double check if my entire OS drive is encrypted or not.
I assume that when it shows Percentage Encrypted as 100% then I guess it did encrypt the entire drive.

Now what if I had chosen to encrypt the Used Space only, then would it still show as 100% encrypted ?
Or am I wrong?

Thanks in advance

If you do not have the password that bitlocker was set up with, then you are out of luck. The whole point of drive encryption is so that you cannot decrypt the data with out the key.

Hey guys I have a desktop That has Windows 7 Ultimate edition installed. My parents are having start up issues with the OS. When the OS starts up, Bitlocker Drive encryption Recovery comes up with and option to unlock 2 Drives which is a separate hard drive. it comes up with a recovery key of 4889F7FD. I manually type the key and click the M: Drive which is the recovery OS. It says Error Recovering Disk due to no recovery key. I click Back and it comes up with a different recovery key as F9F25CA2. If both drives have the same password would the recovery key be the same. The bitlocker says I have temparary access but doesnt log me in.

When I go to safe mode, It loads half the files and comes up with the same. Start up recovery cant fix it. when I login to safemode, it loads half the files. Does this sound like a system wipe or can I fix this with a WIndows 7 Disc.

Hello Zhall, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The key number ID it gives you is only to help you reference what BitLocker Recovery Key is the correct one to enter. I sure hope that you saved or wrote down the actual BitLocker Recovery Key for that drive somewhere in case something like this happens. Without it, you're not going to be able recover the HDD very easily.

Check using the tutorial below to see if you may have the actual BitLocker Recovery Key somewhere, and how to recover the OS drive.

I'm running Win 10 Pro version 1607 (OS Build 14393.321), and I have a weird problem with my 298 GB WD in 2.5? SATA enclosure external hard drive. I have used it several times in the past to backup Windows 7 & 10, but now I can use it to backup Win 7 only not Win 10! I believe this problem may have started after I performed a quick format on it using a Win 10 machine, and also ran CHKDSK /R in order to mark the bad sectors.
Now when I use it to backup my Win 10 machine, backup fails with error 0x8031004A: "BitLocker Drive Encryption cannot be used because critical BitLocker system files are missing or corrupted. Use Windows Startup Repair to restore these files to your computer." Also if I click on manage space it gives an error ?The backup location is not connected? even though it is connected and accessible (even shown in the backup page itself)!

Another weird issue, if I try to scan the drive from the Tools tab in Properties, scan fails with this error: ?
Windows was unable to scan the drive?, and the event viewer report shows:
"Checking file system on E:
The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation.

I do have the following details in relation to the BitLocker encryption for this drive;
- BitLocker Recovery Key

- BitLocker Password

Is there any way to restore the external drive to the ?pre-format? state so that I can recover/access the data?

The drive is in a good health, ? always removed safely by ejecting from notification area and chkdsk has no errors, ? unfortunately data wasn?t backed up as I was in process of migrating to new PC and accidentally deleted the master back-up .

First off, Bitlocker has never been used on this computer. All its drives have never been encrypted. The problem is that when I open Bitlocker Drive Encryption in the Control Panel there are absolutely no drives listed at all. The area under the heading "BitLocker Drive Encryption - Hard Disk Drives" is completely blank, as is the area under "BitLocker To Go". However, Windows Explorer detects all hard and removable drives just fine.

I have tried the following:

1. chkdsk /r (no problems found)
2. sfc /scannnow (no problems found)
3. rebuilding the MBR with Comodo Cleaning Essentials (which didn't quite like the one I had) after aswMBR found no problem
4. repairing/resetting file and registry ownership and permissions to defaults using SubInACL scripts for registry and for files. (This did fix a few minor nagging problems I had, by the way)
5. a clean boot
6. anti-malware scans (including several offline rescue CD's like Kaspersky, Comodo, ESET and AVG)
7. creating a new user account with admin privileges and trying from there
8. trying to trace file and registry activity with Sysinternals Process Monitor (but I don't really understand what to look for, or what most the results in the listing mean, good or bad)
9. A repair installation/inplace upgrade after a clean boot (this was a problem)

The repair installation fails and aborts quickly with the following error message:

In our organization we have a policy to require Bitlocker flash drive encryption. This is set via Group Policy. I am having an issue on some computers where when they select to encrypt their flash drive for the first time, they get the following error message:
BitLocker Encryption cannot be applied to this drive because of conflicting Group Policy settings.
When write access to drives not protected by BitLocker is denied, the use of a USB startup key cannot be required. Please
have your system administrator resolve these policy conflicts before attempting to enable BitLocker.

Comparing to my laptop which is working, here is what I've gathered:

Same OU/Group PoliciesNo group membershipsSame TPM settings in BIOS and TPM Management ConsoleTried multiple flash drivesDoesn't matter who is logged in. Local admin, Domain Admin, or the user of the machine.
We do not require a USB startup key (obviously) and the policy is set to store the recovery passwords and key packages in AD DS. Another thing is the workstation HD is encrypted and the recovery key is in AD, so that tells me at least at one point it had
a healthy relationship with the DCs.
I am convinced it is not an issue with the policy, as there are currently only 2 users complaining of this issue out of 450. Where do I go on the workstation side of things to see what is happening? For your peace of mind, I have isolated the workstation
in it's own OU with only one policy applied. Here is what the policy ... Read more

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Hey, I'm trying to configure my secondary internal HDD to lock with bitlocker, since acronis won't back it up well with truecrypt, but I still want to encrypt my OS drive with truecrypt since I don't have a TPM, and have to use a USB key to unlock it at startup, which I think is a vulnerability since anyone can just grab my USB and plop it into the computer. Is there any way I can bypass this restriction, or even better, have BitLocker require a startup PIN without having a TPM?

Answer:The OS drive must be protected by Bitlocker to automatically unlock.

My external USB disk was encrypted by bitlocker. It worked well until today. Now every time I try to decrypt the disk with no matter the password or key file, the USB disk lost connection.
My local IT said the it can be due to that some track of the disk is broken.

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried... format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

I recently bought an old used PC (Dell XPS Gen. 2 ? Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM), installed my 1 TB SATA hard drive and a new install of Windows XP SP3. I?ve also got an IDE hard drive in there with lots of media files on it. I?ve been trying to copy or move files from an external USB hard drive to the IDE drive, but nearly every time I try to do so, Windows Explorer (or Q-Dir) will lock up, with the progress bar showing very little progress. I have been able to copy a few small files successfully, but anything else seems to crash it. I?ve checked for DMA/PIO status and have found that it has reverted to PIO several times, and I?ve deleted the primary IDE channel in device manager so that it would reinstall with DMA mode. The problem persists. My device manager shows two primary IDE channels and one secondary IDE channel. I have the 1 SATA hard drive, 1 IDE hard drive, and 1 SATA DVD burner installed.
Any ideas?

Hi everyone I am new to this forum. I have a question:
1. I had some confidential data stored on a partition that is not encrypted.
2. I decided to give away my computer to charity so I deleted this confidential data using a simple delete in Windows 7.
3. After that I formatted the whole hard disk and then turned on BitLocker and encrypted the whole drive and then gave away the PC to charity without using a disk wiper program .

My questions is: Is it possible for anybody to recover those deleted files using a data recovery program? I understand that when you do a simple file delete only the address of the data is deleted but not the data itself. If I encrypt the drive, files deleted before encryption do they get encrypted because they are not really deleted?

other method that can help me.
Please inform, I'm in a dire need.

Answer:How can I recover files from a formatted drive which was encrypted by bitlocker.

I suggest you contact the local data recovery company to recover the data. Thank you for your understanding.

How can I move a file from a bitlocker drive to a drive without encryption.
Bitlocker does not decrypt files when moving file from hard drive to another device.
Computer (1) with bitlocker.  Computer (2) without bitlocker
When I move a file from Computer (1) to Computer (2) the file is not accessible on Computer (2).  I moved the file via an unencrypted USB.  The file is not being decrypted when it is moved to the USB.
I can remove the decryption one file at a time by going to properties and advanced attributes by unchecking the "Encrpyt contents to secure data".  I have not found a way to have bitlocker to properly decrypt as the file or multiple files
are moved to another device.
This is happened before and after a motherboard replacement that required a new encryption.

After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?
Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.
I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

when I save a file to One Drive, is it encrypted or must I do something to make certain it is encrypted?

I saw this so it looks like it.
If you're looking for something extra to encrypt those files before they're sent off, then Cryptomator, Boxcryptor or another encryption tool like VeraCrypt may be what you're looking for.

When I try to copy files from my hard drive onto my DVD-RW drive (F), I get the following alert message - - F is not accessible. Incorrect Function. Any ideas as to the cause? It has worked in the past; but has been some time since I last had cause to make a back-up file copy in this way. I am still able to copy to a USB stick, and also to SD memory cards, but this drive will not play ball.

Answer:Cannot copy files onto "F" drive

uninstall the drive in device manager reboot and let windows re-detect the drive..or try different media, you may have put a non compatable disc in your drive or it maybe your drive just does not like the make of disc (known)..

So I have to reinstall my computer completely and I want to backup my hard drive to this external hard drive. I want to be able to have access to all files from this external hard drive. I'm doing this just so I can get to game saves and transfer it over when needed. That is pretty much the only reason for what I'm doing.

So because of that I thought a simple copy paste of everything would work fine but after it finished pasting, it didn't even paste everything and didn't do much major areas. I'm guessing there is a tool I will have to use but I can't find one that does what I'm trying to do.

Can anyone help me?

I periodically copy my files from the C drive to a second internal hard dirve
using the Windows Explorer window and simply right clicking the directory I
want to copy and then pasting to the duplicate directory on hard drive 2.
This time some of the files are telling me 'access denied....' I'm the sole
user of this computer. Those problem files cannot be accessed from the C
drive either but a few I have tried can be accessed on the backup drive,
e.g., Adobe .pdf files. These accessible files on drive 2 are from a previous backup.
An when it does encounter a file that it can't access, Windows won't
continue and stops the copying process for all the rest of the files.
I downloaded RichCopy and it will continue the copy process but still denies me access to about 150 files out of about 2,000. I am the sole user of the computer and the administrator.
I read on the MS website to turn off Simple File Sharing, go to Security on the Tools menu and change the permission, which I did. But how can it be that I created these files or downloaded some and some were copied in the past and can still be accessed from drive 2?
It is XP Pro.

I did the stuff to set it up which is partition and format as ntfs file system to be used to store all his files. Well now his pc won't let him copy files from his downloads folder to a folder on his D drive, he gets an error message saying access is denied or can't access folder. But he can make a new folder and cut and paste the files in to. Is there a limit as to how uch you can fit in to a folder?
I checked all his settings and even mse and nothing I can find to fix it, his security software consist of windows fire wall, mse, and malwarebytes in safe mode once a week. Any Ideas?

Answer:can't copy files to D drive

I only recently installed an extra hdd for the first time and still learning how to use it effectively.

I had a similar problem in that I was trying to drag/drop files from my c drive to the other. I was trying to do it in disk management which apparently you shouldn't but my problem was that when I drag/dropped the file it only copied it instead of moving it. I didn't, at first think it would be a problem as I could just delete the original except when I tried that, I got a message saying the file was in use by another program. I got around this by logging out of windows and back in again.

I know this is not exactly the same problem but maybe it will point you in the right direction.

Good luck.

How do I automatically mirror files from a hard disk drive to a network folder?

In this case I want to mirror the contents of an entire disk containing photos (no system files) to a shared folder on an OpenMediaVault server running on my home network.

This is separate from the regular backup of the rest of my system which is done with backup software. For the contents of this disk, I don't want them compressed into a backup container file. I want them to be exact duplicates of the original files, kept up to date in that shared network location (login required).

Also, it doesn't matter if they update in real time. Once a day is fine, for example.

Hi tech guys
I used to have Sugar Sync before, and quite familiar with it to sync my files on PC at home and at work,
I wanted to try Google Drive, as I have Gmail account that might be more useful,
I downloaded the software and selected the folders, but when I clicked each folder I found "Drop files here"
that meant all folders were uploaded, but with out the contain files that inside the folders,

comparing the Sugar Sync, just select the folder and after a while you will see a green "tick" at the lower corner of the folder to confirm that the entire folder was synced, and any new file or adjustment it will be auto synced,
is this option is available with Google drive too?
will appreciate if any relevant feedbacks,

Answer:How to syng folders and files automatically with google drive

I use a program called "Allway Sync" which you can setup to sync a USB or Folder to Google Drive in the background when the USB is inserted to the pc or for it to sync when files are changed.

I'm trying to copy my pictures to a thumb drive. I label my pics son rides his bike.jpg, 2.We had fun at the park.jpg, etc. It loads 150 or so ok and then it will say that it can't load 151.We love New York.jpg. If I rename it 151.jpg, it will load. If I delete everything in the thumb drive and put in 151.We love New York.jpg, it will load. It's almost as if after taking so many pics, it bogs down and will not load the captions anymore although it shows that it's only 10% full. I had this happen before and I can't remember what I did to fix it. Can you help? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Can't copy certain .jpg files to thumb drive

Are you copying the files directly to the root directory of the partition? There is a limit on how many files the root directory can contain. I suggest you make folders and copy to those. There is also a 255 character limit on the name, if memory serves be correctly.

I want to save files from my laptop onto a external hard drive or a other laptop. The laptop i want the files from wont load. Every time I try to load my laptop it goes into HP recovery manager but then freezes and wont do anything. Ive tried loading my laptop through the different F8 menus but it always goes into hp recovery then freezes. I tried removing the hard drive and connecting to my other lap top through USB. I can find my hard disk file but it still says Hp recovery and im unable to find any off the files. Its say that the Hard disk only has 1GB left but im still unable access any of the files on the disk.
Can anything be done or is my hard drive knackered and ive lost all my files??

Answer:want to copy files from hard drive

When you say HP recovery freezes at what % recovery it got to and for how many hours/minutes? The reason I say this is that recover could take hours and one has to be patient and wait.

Ok, so here is my problem; I cannot copy files from my usb flash drives onto my PC anymore, I keep getting error message "cannot find specified file". I have 2 flash drives and they both seem to work on other computers. I can copy files onto them just not back onto my PC, OS is Windows XP and it is an older Dell optiplex. This just started about a month ago, prior to that I didnt have any problems copying from the flash drives. I'm guessing that its probably some kind of hardware failure, but I'm hoping its not. Anyway, any advice will be appreciated!

Answer:Can't copy files from jump drive

If they work on another computer, burn them to a disk to be sure they are saved.
Then try reformatting the jump drives on your computer, using FAT32.
You could have a File table error, a data error, or a hardware error... Some jump drives are famous for failing when carried in your pocket... Cruzer and Kingston most prominent among them.

Hey everybody, I was wondering how to copy files I've put on a DVD-R disc over to my Hard drive? I backed up a lot of date on a bunch of them, and I assumed I could just drag and drop it all back onto my computer. It hasn't worked so far, or it says it will take 21 hours. Is there a way I need to do it, like when I had to burn it on? Like, a reverse-burning program?

Thanks for anything you can tell me

Answer:Copy files from DVD-R to my hard drive

Copying and pasting is the correct method.

If its taking that long then either the disc is damaged, the drive is faulty, or the contents are causing unusual copying behaviour with Windows.

Have you tried the disc in another computer to see how it copies? Or have you tired only copying small amount of data/files at a time?

The only "reverse-burning program" would be a program that creates and ISO(image file) of the disc, then you extract the contents of the ISO to another folder. This wouldn't be the normal way to copy files from disc though and I only even mention this in case Windows is having trouble with the contents/files on the disc or if the disc is damaged. Magic ISO will make an ISO file and 7-Zip can extract the contents of one.

DVD's are a poor backup medium in my opinion, not very reliable, very easy to damage and loose all your data. When you do future backups be sure to verify that they work correctly and I would recommend doing them to an external hard drive, USB sticks, or online/cloud services and if they are really important doing backups to multiple sources.

Initially I found that BitLocker on the Go supported removable media like flash drives and external drives. Why isn't a CD/DVD supported since it is considered removable media? Will this support be available in future releases?

Answer:Will BitLocker or BitLocker on the Go ever support CD/DVD encryption?

Bitlocker to Go is not supported on CD/DVD. Your suggestion is valuable, I will forward this information to the appropriate department through our internal channel.
Both the Microsoft Product Team and Development Team will take into consideration all suggestions and feedback for future releases.
Currently, you may need third party software to encrypt CD/DVD.

Hi all,

To increase our backup solutions, we have decided to backup our SQL database every hour to a folder within the C drive (we couldn't get it to backup straight to a USB drive). So now we need a way (batch file best solution?) to copy these files to the USB drive, lets say every 1.05hours just after they've been created?

Maybe we could copy the entire folder every hour and delete old backups that are in this folder and to the new place for the backups. (although I guess it won't work as it'll have the same folder name once it has been copied).

Or copy the individual files to that new folder although with this they have all different names so is it possible to copy the newest file to the new folder and then after this delete the old backups from a certain time frame?

Big thanks for your help!

TIMEOUT /t 3600 /nobreak

This might work, I'm no expert by any means, but the batch file should copy all the files, and then pause for a hour, and then loop back to the start and complete the same process again.

Here's what the XCOPY switches mean -

I have a HP Media Center PC m470N
Windows XP Media Center
Pentium 4 with HD

I have been working with my computer for almost a month. The first time I took my computer in to the place that I bought it to have my data backed up. They mentioned at that time that my hard drive might be bad. It was a year to the day that I had bought this computer. They were supposed to backup by data and restore my computer. They told me that my hard drive was okay. So after many days in the shop, I finally get my computer back and I start getting KERNEK_STACK_INPAGE_ERRORS. I called the support people and they told me to run recovery again. Since that day which was approximately February 25th, I have run recovery program three or four times by their advice because the same error kept coming up during downloads of windows updates, etc. This past saturday I called HP the maker of my computer and they told me to run restore from the CD's that I had made when the computer was purchased. I did this and put all that stuff back on my computer slowly, not giving it too much information at one time. Well today i turned it on and it will not start start up at all. Answer:Hard Drive Failed, Need To Copy Files With Dos

most likely you will need a tool like getdataback (that is teh NTFS version you will need the FAT version if you are using that file system) ... you need to set your problem drive as slave to your new drive then run the program ... if you are able to see your lost files then you can order a code to unlock the program for 80$(last time I checked so don't quote me) and recover your files

First I want to be sure where to plug in the sata cable. The primary drive is connected to "0". The DVD is connected to "1". "2" and "3" are open. Does it matter? Since I just want to copy some files to the primary, what do I need to do in Disk Management? My computer: Dell Inspiron 660, Windows 10. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Need help setting up second drive to copy files to the primary.

Assuming it is not and external USB drive or something. It should not matter which port you plug into, especially if you're using AHCI and not the (very unlikely) old IDE mode (and even then all it would do is make it a master or slave according to the port). I'd just go with port 2, unless it's hard to reach or something. You should not have to do anything in device manager or disk management.

Basically, just shut off the PC, plug in the new drive to the SATA and a power cable (pay attention to the sideways L shape thingy in them for proper orientation). Then fire the PC back up and Windows should see the new drive and give it a letter, if it is already formatted, which I assume it is if you're trying to get files off of it.

On the off chance Windows pops up a message about "You must format this drive before use" FREEZE! DON'T do it. I have seen Windows do that thinking a formatted drive is blank for whatever reason. If you "format" it, you wipe out all data on it.

I am no longer using the office, this was one of the principal reasons for me to use onedrive now use Google Docs which serves me very well, however I have many files saved in onedrive, documents, music, videos and pictures, I want to spend all to Google Drive, as it will now be my favorite cloud, I am having many problems with sinconização onedrive and has failed much time to upload, something that does not happen with Google Drive, at least in my case ...
I wish I could copy everything a faster process, have almost 35GB of files in onedrive and if I download will be long ... I intend to buy more space in Google Drive to pass all the onedrive.
Is there any program that does it or an online tool?
Thank you

I've newly installed W10 Pro and am constantly being pestered with permission nags (see attached) while attempting to reorganise files within the Local Disk.

I've tried changing the User permissions via "Properties>Security" but encounter nothing but a load of error messages.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I upgraded from Windows 7, bypassing 8 entirely so I've never had to tackle this issue before. I'd like full access without annoying UAC-related notifications every two minutes!
Thanks in advance.

I had Staples scan about 1100 pages into 3 .pdf documents and put them onto a USB thumb drive.

At work I tried to copy the files from the USB thumb drive to two different desktop computers. On both computers the file transfer dialog box would open and I could see the progress bar moving briefly. However, each time it would stop and I would get a File Not Found error and it suggested that I make sure the file path was correct.

I took the thumb drive back to Staples and asked the tech to check it. He had no problem transferring the same documents to a machine in the print center at Staples.

I took the thumb drive home and tried it on a laptop. The transfer was successful and I had no problems.

The computers at work where the problem persists are not networked together, though they all do connect to the same Internet connection. Both machines that I tried the thumb drive on at work are running XP Home. Both computers have Windows Firewall disabled and are instead running Webroot Internet Security Essentials with its firewall enabled. I am also running ThreatFire on one of the computers.

My friend has a Dell computer and recently got the error messageWindows root> \system32\hal.dll is corrupt or missing. and the computer will not boot. I've booted it using a different boot disk and am using Linux to find and copy her personal files before attempting to fix the basic problem. I keep running into this error message each time I try to copy it to an external drive for safekeeping: ERROR Read-only File SystemI've looked at the attributes, made sure they're all set to read/write, but nothing has worked. Solutions anyone. It's funny. I feel more confidence about dealing with the corrupt root file than I do about this copy/paste issue.Sierra1411

I have a friend who cannot copy files to a flashdrive on her laptop. When you attach the drive it makes the plug and play sound and even opens the screen for the new E:\ drive. But trying to copy files or create a new text document gets an error. It says
Cannot copy files to *, the device is not ready'. The entry in the error logs basically says the same thing. I made sure that the removable storage service was set to auto, and even started it. But no worky. Ive tried two different flash drives. Also, it will not let me reformat the drives either. It says the process failed.. Any ideas guys??

Answer:Canot copy files to flash drive

Try turning off the Removable Storage service and repartition and reformat the drive:

So I recently moved from XP to 7. Before I did this I created a backup of some files on my XP box and copied it to an external hard drive. Now that I'm on Windows 7 I've learned that there is really no way to directly restore the backup. So I have restored it onto a Vista box and copied the rehydrated files back onto the external hard drive. Now I just want to copy the files from the external hard drive to the main hard drive on my Windows 7 box. However, when I do this I get the following warning for some (but not most) folders:

"You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this folder"

My options are Continue, Skip, and Cancel. First off, I am an administrator on this box so I don't understand why it's asking my this. Secondly, if I choose Continue, it tells me that the folder I'm copying over already exists in the destination! What? The system is in the middle of copying it! Why is it asking me this? So I just tell it to proceed, but then it tells me the same thing about a few particular files and asks me if I want to overwrite them or ignore them. I usually say overwrite because they shouldn't be there yet. Anyway, by the time the whole thing is done, the destination folder is actually BIGGER and has more files than the same freaking folder on the drive I was copying from? How is that possible?

What is going on here? Why does a simple copy operation not work anymore?

Answer:Can't copy files from external hard drive

The copy function in Win7 works very well - trust me. When you did your copy operation, the system apprently found files/folders by the same name that already existed on your system. E.g. if you copy a folder named "Music", the system will note that there is already such a folder that comes with the system. But very often those are system files like .ini that are on both the target and the source.
If your folder got bigger, you'll have to look what the additions are. Hard to tell from here what might have happened.
