Lenovo X220 Bar of Static (Screen issues)

Question: Lenovo X220 Bar of Static (Screen issues)

My lenovo x220 has a large bar of static taking up a quarter of my screen. I know it isn't software based as I have already run a diagnostic and all my drivers are up to date. I scanned for viruses. Also nothing. Any advice??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This just started this morning.  I noticed that if I left a browser window open for a while (particularly with a white background with black text), when I minimize the window, I can see a faint image of it left behind that fairly quickly (at least for now) fades away on it's own.

I turned off the machine, unplugged all the batteries and the power.  Checked and cleaned all the connections and vents.  Then powered it back up on just main battery (has nearly a full charge) played with brightness just a bit.  At first it wasn't repeating the problem but quickly it's showing up again and I am extremely concerned.

I am still under warranty.  Please advise.  Thank you in advance - best regards.

Answer:Lenovo X220 Tablet (screen just startedshowing signs of screen memory burn in...)

Updated Info:  Problem only happens on the edges of the screen, a little less than an inch in from any edge, top/bottom/left/right and the problem may appear, but anything in the middle and it seems fine.

Doesn't happen if my background is set to solid black.  It's slightly noticeable with a mid-grey tone and it's worse still with a mid to dark grey tone that is tinted with a purple-ish hue.

Could some other x220 owners set their bg color to a dark grey purple color, and try to see if it's just a limitation.  I'm trying to determine if my hardware is failing, or if I just stumbled upon something that for most cases and purposes isn't going to be much of a bother.

Other than recently calibrating my touch and pen input, I haven't made any changes to the system.  Today I installed a new intel graphics driver update from Win update but it didn't change anything.

Thank you all very much.

We are having some issues with the pen touch when getting closer to the edge of the screen. The little dot-guide loses accuracy around the edges, making it frustrating to adjust clicks. Another issue is the pen gets shaky when you are closer to the edge of the screen as well. Example - it is impossibleto draw a straight line when you get closer to the screen (OneNote). We had a Toshiba Portege previously and we never had these issues. I apoligize if this is redudndant but i would like a solution. Driver update? Thanks,

This is common with all Wacom tablet screens, but it shouldn't be as noticeable as you describe... It's certainly not as annoying on my X61T. Perhaps it's a defect?

Hello Folks, This is my first post on this forum and wanted to share my very recent experience with you and see if anyone has  a suggestion or feedback. I recently purchased a new ThinkPad X220. I got it yesterday (9/1). When I opened the box, I found that the LCD screen is cracked (there is a crack that extends from the top to the bottom of the screen with a circle in the middle as if the liquid crystal is spilled). I contacted customer service right away, and was told that I need to submit pictures of the damage before they can help me. I spoke to a supervisor who promised me a call back at 10 AM today for further assistance. It is 12:10 noon (EST), and I am still waiting for that call. I emailed the sales person, who helped me purchase the machine, to see if she can help me get a refund, or replace the machine, or at lease replace the screen. I even emailed her pictures of the damaged screen, but .... NO RESPONSE! I just spent $1029 for a computer that I can't use, and no one at Lenovo cares to help me. Any idea what should I do next?! Thanks in advance. see this link for the damaged screen: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/6106115589/in/photostream/

my Yoga 13 was working fine until yesterday it gave me weird static screen and I had to turn it off. when I tried turning it back on again i would only get the Lenovo logo at the beginning for a few seconds before it starts up with the static screen again. here's a picture of it.sometimes it wouldn't even start up at all and it would shut down immediately.   however one rare occasion It sent me to trouble shooting and I got to log on to windows again but that only lasted for a minute before I had the static noise screen again.   what could be wrong with it? Is it a hardware problem? please help!!

Ihave owned a Windows 7 X220 Tablet for about 3 years, but never previously ugraded the Lenovo software on it. I saw this was possible, ticked various upgrades and set it off to download and install. On restarting the screen is black - with only a flat white cursor top left. I called Lenovo who said they suspected a bios upgrade had conflicted with something else being installed at the same time (I had ticked multiple upgrades at once), and suggested Ilook and ask for help on the forum. They said they thopught I needed to roll back the bios upgrade but Idon't know how to. I run Trend Micro security suite which was not swithced off when I did the upgrade. Any suggestions at all would be really welcome as the machine is effectively dead and unusable unless I can get it back to the previous set-up. ( Isuspect there are likely to be restore  points but cannot do anything at all at present) Thanks very much    cnwlenovo 15 Feb 2015

Answer:Disaster - X220 tablet - screen black on reboot after installing Lenovo upgrades

Ihave just (after posting this request), and 2 weeks after the failed attempt to get the computer to restart, tried again with the laptop powered onto the mains - it must have completely lost battery power in the meantime, successfully rebooted into Windows, the machine installed Windows upgrqades as it booted, and restarted itself in the process. Iliterally bit my nails as this was going on - and pleased to report the macjine now seems to have opened up OKin windows. Phew!!!      Wonder if the "bad loop"it may have gotten into when Iwas tryoing to reboot several times before - resulting in black screen and white cursor top left - may have died with a complete power down. In any event Iam hugely relieved - so Lenovo upgrades were obviously "self-correcting and troubleshotting after all.... Cnwlenovo 15 February 2015

Dear Lenovo,                          I recently purchased a lenovo S-10 from your website as a gift for my wife. A few days ago, while using the netbook, we started having display issues. Within 10 minutes, half of the screen was extremely pixelated and all we started seeing were random lines across half the screen. The other half of the screen looked just fine. After speaking with your customer service,we sent the netbook(which was covered under warranty) over to your labs. I just recently received a call from one of the representatives, to let me know that my screen was damaged and it almost costs the same price as the netbook to replace the LCD screen. I was shocked, since this is not something I had expected from Lenovo. This comes as a jolt to me since I decided to go for what I thought was a reliable and trustworthy product. While I understand that technical issues happen all the time, I'm surprised that the representatives blatanly pushed the blame on us for negligence. I can assure you that we have never dropped, mishandled or even had a single scratch in our two months of usage. This is clearly a faulty line and moreover a refurbished product. Kindly let me know if there is anything that you can do to help me get my wife's netbook back to her in the same condition she loved to maintain. thanks,Abishek Ashok

I have been having issues with the screen on a B590 Laptop for while, where it would get strange visuals, like every otherline would be washed out, or it would have horizontal bars.  And it would need something pressed against the bottom right of the screen to look normal.  The issues happen during the bootup screen before windows as well. When its not supported just rightWhen a pen is inserted on the right part of the hingeAfter removing the pen while onWhile ordering a replacement panel for screen I was advised that the cable might be the faulty part and that a panel would likely do nothing, seeing as when the panel was removed from the bezel with the ribbon cable in a slack position it worked fine.  If necessary is the display cable/ribbon connector for this laptop, B590 with a 1366x768 display and model 20208, available?

HelloI have some annoying issues with my Lenovo z50-70. I gave it to my cousin and he played some games on it, the battery was running low and he told me that he couldn't find the charger. So the laptop died. Ever since it happened I can't open my laptop.  When I press the power button, the 2 lights on the front turns on but the screen remains black. No lights at the webcam turns on as it usually does. I can hear the laptop running but it wont open. I tried to connect the laptop to my TV with a HDMI cable just incase the screen is broken but it didn't work either.  When I have my charger plugged in the PC turns on automatically so when I try to turn it of it re-opens. I tried to remove the battery and hold down the power button for 30 seconds and then reopen it but it doesn't work.  I contacted support and they told me to turn the PC in for a fix but it will take a lot of time and I'd like to try some fixes before.  What I tried:- Removing the battery and holding the power button.- Opening the PC with and without the charger plugged in.- Opening the PC without the battery in (Charger only)- Holding the power button for 30 seconds trying to open the PC Nothing works. Operation system - Windows 10  If you got any fixes that you want me to try please write them below.Sorry for my bad english.

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the computer is displaying blank screen when pressing on the power button and while waking up from sleep mode, I suggest you to perform Flee-Power and then re-install the Display drivers from the support website. Below are the steps to perform Flee Power:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

I broke my screen a few weeks ago and after purchasing a replacement screen from a third party manufacturer I got it working for a few days. However, today, I was using it earlier and suddenly the screen turned into flickering pixelated lines for a few seconds then it went black. I've tried diassemblign and reassembling it to make sure all the connectors are intact but wasn't able to get it working again. Now I'm stuck in a situation where I don't know if my LCD is faulty or wether it's the LCD connector. How can I figure out what it is and would you happen to know the part number for the LCD connector. Any help would be appreciated.  EDIT: Another thing to note is that I am currently using it on an external monitor and when I go to display settings, it only identifies 1 monitor (the external one). I am not sure if this is indicative of something but maybe it could be useful. EDIT 2: Just discovered that my touch screen is still working. Thank You

Hi Guys! I have a lenovo e540 Type: 20c6-s00200 and habe some problems with my screen. the orginal screen got  malfunction, i dont remeber exacty why but my best guess is that it had soemthing to go with inner lights of the screen. was like ayear ago and i bought a replacement screen  which wasnt an original screen from lenovo. i change the screens on my own and it worked pretty well (after i fristly bought a wrong screen and have to send it back and a buy another one) so this screen has now some issues to, but has most likely nothign to do with the inner lights i guess.because at the start of the laptop he works some time (apparently round about 30 minutes) after that he turn black. when i put in an external screen, on the screen he works perfectly well. when i have  this screen in i can see that the laptop pushes me back to screen where i can choose which profile i wanna use (i use windows 7)earlier the screen after short delay got himself back and i could see on the screen in the laptop again,  but since yesterday the screen dosent get back. after i turn the complete laptop down, remove the bateery and the energy i dislock the screen and out him back in again. after taht he works but gets down after that short time (about 30 minutes) So my question:1. do u have a guess why tis happens2. can i fix this with buying a new screen ? (or maybe isnt even that necessary?9 i hope some of u guys can help me!i would really appreciate ... Read more

I have been having issues with my screen going black when it is moved (any movement will cause screen to go black), if it is opened more than 90 degrees, it goes black as soon as you get to the login screen. I can connect to external display, which will continue to function after screen cuts out. Once screen goes black, I have to put it in sleep, then turn it back on to regain display. It sounds like a bad connection but that doesn't make sense with its functionality up to the login screen.

So I noticed a change in the screen on our laptop. Of course it is only a few months out of warranty. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I know some older laptops had a similer problem. I have posted a picture to help with what I am seeing. The white spot is under the screen. Nothing has been done to the laptop, nothing has been spilled on the laptop, there is no reason that anything I did would have damaged the laptop in any way. It looks like water between the backlight and the LCD screen, but that is impossible. It's never gotten wet. Thanks for any input. http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff6/Geoffwhite18/yoga%20screen_zpseye7aeec.jpg~original

Hello My lenovo Yoga 900 is less than 2 months old and whether I am charging or using battery only, the screen periodically goes black. I have to wiggle the screen around a bit before it displays properly again. HAs anyone experienced this problem.  Essentially, I could be typing and then screen goes blank as if trying to converse energy and despite continuing typing, it remains that way I then move the screen back and forth or sometimes press the windows logo at the bottom of the screen. Pressing the windows logo sometimes will result inthe screen displaying for the second or so i press the logo and then goes black again. I would like the screen to continue display certaininly whilst i am using the laptop!

Answer:lenovo t420 screen replacement issues

There are 3 parts involved (motherboard, screen, cable) and there is not much you can be sure of without some replacement parts to try. I will say that USUALLY, if screen damage causes motherboard damage, the motherboard fuse blows. Since your backlight comes on, it is not the fuse. I have found that if the backlight comes on, in most cases, the cable isn't plugged in straight, either on the motherboard connector or, more likely, behind the panel. If you don't attach the connector to the panel with new tape, it can pull out from one side or the other. Also, the cable connector behind the panel is fragile and easy to damage. Finally, your new panel might be defective. Cable not plugged in right or damaged is probably most likely.

Hello guys. I'm here as much as venting as I want to solve my issue, and I'd like to know if anyone had this kind of problem before, and what you did to solve it.

I bought this notebook a couple of weeks ago:

Product ID: 80C40002BR
Model: 80C4
Serial Number: *

It's a Lenovo Flex 2-14 i3 notebook, and it seemed awesome so far.

That's when, last week, my mother noticed something odd about the notebook, and had me look at it. Then I noticed a rather noticeable black spot (with colored spots around it). Seemed like dead pixels, lots of them, and some stuck pixels as well.

I called support (from Brazil) and after sending lots of pics they told me warranty wouldn't apply to that kind of issue. But it does... according to this page: http://support.lenovo.com/br/pt/documents/ht035306. There are obviously more than 6 (and adjacent!) dead pixels.

They don't want to repair it, and for now I'm trying to replace the notebook at the store (which they won't, probably).

Does anyone know what am I supposed to do? I don't know how lenovo support service stands around the globe, but at least in Brazil it's pretty negligent...

Thanks in advance guys.

I recently bought this laptop and I have two problems:1. Especially when the screen is black, there is a green light on the upper part of the screen. I don't know what causes it maybe a led or something is installed badly (it's a 5 cm² area). Should I take it back and ask for a new one?2. This problem is related to scaling. When it is set to 100%, everything is small but crystal clear. When at 150%, everything looks normal but some apps like Steam, BitTorrent... are blurry like they were just zoomed on. Reinstalling windows and drivers should solve this? Simply reinstalling drivers didn't help. Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo Y700-15ISK screen issues

I don't know anything about your first problem (it may be a hardware problem), but I do know something about the second. Some programs (Steam, for example) aren't made for high-dpi screens. for these programs that appear blurry, right click on their icon (on the desktop), and click properties. Under the compatibility tab, check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings". This should work after you restart the program.

Hello, I just three days ago bought a brand-new Edge 15 laptop, about which I'm very excited, and while I'm not usually the kind of person who likes touch screens on his laptops I want it to work since I know it comes with it! When I first opened it, the touchscreen worked perfectly fine, but as soon as I installed the first round of Windows updates (I believe 8->8.1?) it suddenly stopped working. I installed the second round of updates and it worked for a hot second but now it doesn't work again. If I pull up the device manager, no touchscreen appears under "Human Interface Devices" but a device does appear under "USB Controllers" labeled "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" I can't for the life of me find the drivers for the Edge 15 touchscreen on the Lenovo support website and nothing I'm finding for any other laptop touchscreen problems appears to be helping. Anyone have any help? Has anyone seen this before? Where's the incompatability between Windows 8.1 and my new touchscreen? Why is the device descriptor request failing? I only just bought the laptop! Thanks!

Hello Lenovo Community!  I purchased a Lenovo Flex 2 14" Laptop last Saturday (6th of September 2014) and I noticed when using it at night time that there was a yellow tint coming from all corners. This yellow tint isn't really noticeable when on standard applications with a bright colour but when watching films or viewing dark images it is really noticeable. I returned the laptop to the store (PC World) and they happily provided me with a replacement, however the same problem is happening with the replacement which I got today. I have included a picture below which shows the tint when streaming a film on Netflix, as you can see it is really noticeable and not something I have seen with any other Laptops I have purchased. The same yellow tint appears on dark images or applications, not just on Netflix.  Has anyone else expierenced a problem like this before? Is this expected? Or have I just been extremely unlucky with the two laptops I have been given? Thanks for any support/advice, Shane

Hello All. I have a unique problem, that I would love to see if anyone else has had or any thoughts. I am trying to deal with a Lenovo G585 Laptop. The screen broke on it, as a dog stepped on the screen, cracking it. The laptop does turn on, and I do see a picture on the existing screen, it just has a huge crack through it. So, I ordered a new screen, and replaced it in the laptop.  It is a 15.6 inch screen. Now, when I turned on the screen, I can see that the screen does take an image, but the backlight does not turn on. At first, I thought that the new screen was defective, but I have since replaced it with another screen, and it does the same thing. I have also tried to turn the backlight on through the keyboard, with no luck. Here is the weird thing. If I put the old screen back on, it lights up no problem. Then when I put the new screen in, right after and keep the laptop plugged into the wall. the new screen also lights up. When I take out the power, the new screen no longer lights up, but the old one does. I don't think its the lcd cable as that doesn't explain the power/no power thing, and this laptop has done this now with two different screens. What am I missing?

Step3: You will find Adjust screen resolution while Plugged in and while charging and you can set the highest level while on battery to see if the power options control the screen display

Hope the information helps. Let us know.

I bought 2 Lenovo Think Edge 15 Laptops in late Feb this year. It was delivered on 14/03/2011. Exactly after 2 moths of light usage (on 17/05/2011) one of the laptop shown issues with it's LCD screen. Top left corner of the screen bacame completely white. I called Lenovo and they asked me to ship the laptop for service. I always keps these laptops in my office room and were never dropped or exposed to any liquids. As I was 100% sure of that, I expected Lenovo to replace the LCD. However for my surprice I received a quotation from Lenovo today asking me to pay $ 342 for the replacement of the LCD screen. The quotation conatins below text in it."The following components have been found to be damaged or have evidence of Liquid Damage and will be replaced" I am 200% sure that this laptop never had any damage or exposed to any liquids as this was always in my home office room where no one else go in. I my self is a senior IT consultant and therefore I know how to handle laptops. These were my first purchase of Lenovo after the laptops were rebranded from IBM. With both the laptops I was having issues with LCD screen so far. Dear all,

I had a startup issue with my U410 Touch. Just now I restarted it as it was a bit slow. Then I found out that it cannot go to Windows 8 again. The problem is:

I can see the Lenovo logo while it was loading (see pic 1), and then the system told me my computer had a problem and needs to be restarted and repaired (see pic 2). Then it restarted again, and showed"preparing automatic repare" (see pic 3). Then it went to the blackscreen (see pic4)...After several minutes, this process will start again and again....

The problem is, I tried to use One Key Recovery, it didn't work. No matter which option I chose, it went to the same process as shown in pic1. I also tried to go to BIOS, tried F2, FN+F2, F8, FN+F8 buttons, all didn't allow me to go to the setting.

What else can I do? I am in London, and all my thesis files are on the computer. I don't want to lose them as I have no backup. Many thanks in advance.

Regards,

Fangjing

Answer:Lenovo U410 Touch startup issues--Black screen

You have what is commonly called the automatic repair loop problem. If I am in your case my priority are the thesis documents so that I'll try removing the hdd and access it through another unit for the purpose of backing/copy them up. A virus scan will have to be done to see if the problem was created by it. After the backup and scan, I'll try to create or borrow a repair disk with the same version as your unit's OS. Put back the hdd and boot the repair disk. Select command prompt. At command prompt type without quotation "sfc /scannow" to check for corrupted system files and make the necessary repairs if there are any errors found.

Question: Lenovo X220 PSU

Hi Guys, Thanks for clicking. About 6 months ago I ordered an X220 with the following specs: Intel Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz 6 GB memory Win 7 Pro. It was really quite expensive, and it is still fairly new. The mains socket in the back has come loose, meaning I can't charge it at home. I work in IT and always take care with my kit. I have used HP Laptops and Dell Laptops for years on end and never had anything like this happen before. I called customer care and was told this isn't covered under warranty. I order tens of £thousands of Lenovo kit every year and I've never had anything as daft as this. Surely the fact that this laptop cost me about £1700 and it is less than 6 months old means that I should expect a certain amount of integrity, especiialy from a manufacturer who prides themselves on the ruggedness of their kit? Does anybody have any advice? Does anybody agree that this is a bit silly? I asked to speak to the customer care assistants manager and was told he was unavailable, I asked to speak to his managers manager and was he told he would also be unavailable. Anyways, rant over. Thanks in advance for your time all! Charles

Hey there Viper334 and Welcome to the Forums!

It is very unfortunate that you are experiencing this issue with your machine. And I would like to gain a little bit more clarity on what you are experiencing, are referring to the socket where the ac adapter plugs in? Thank you.

Question: x220 issues

Hi I have following problems with my x220: 1) the laptop has powered down twice in win7. Both times temps were 60-75C range, and laptop had fully charged battery with ac connected. shutdowns occured about week apart. 2) also on 3 occasions when shutting down laptop from win7, the pc doesn't seem to shut down completely. screen goes off but thinkpad indicators (bluetooth, battery) stay on, and unplugging/replugging ac still makes the bleep sound. 3) on one occasion after this uncomplete shutdown the machine would refuse to power up. although the machine did power up normally again after removing battery for second. I've done memory test which where Ok. Battery seems to be ok, the machine works fine 4-5 hours on battery. On both cases the machine was ac blugged, and it just shut down without any warning. Event log shows nothing else than that unexpected shutdown logged. Performance seems normal and average use temps are 50-60C range. In games I tested temps go up to 80-85C range. So I don't think temps are causing these issues. I'm looking for ideas how to troubleshoot these problems. Warranty is expired.

Hi Zeropack101,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with auto shutdown on your ThinkPad X220.

Have you checked if the system fan is running normally?
Check booting the system into safe mode option.
I also suggest to run ThinkVantage system update utility to update all the drivers and application from that, also update system BIOS.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I have a Lenovo X220 running Windows 7 with an Intel i5 2430m clocking at 2.40 gHz and an integrated video card. It's my only computer right now (I will not be getting a new one in the forseeable future) and so I play all my games on it. However, with the new games coming out requiring system requirements over 2.40 gHz, I was wondering is there anyway to push my CPU speed beyond 2.40 gHz without changing the CPU? If it's not possible, is there any compatible CPU upgrades which I can get for my Lenovo X220 which allows me to run GTA 5 at medium to high graphics at over 30 fps? I live in Hong Kong however so if you can provide any addresses to get these replacement CPU, that would be nice . Will appreciate any answers.

Answer:Lenovo X220 - How get it run as fast as possible?

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately you can't swap the CPU since it's soldered into the motherboard, meaning if you need more CPU power you'll need a new motherboard.

The most powerful option is an Intel Core i7-2640M (2.8-3.5 GHz, 4MB L3 Cache).

I anyhow doubt that the CPU above will play GTA5 correctly, I think your biggest bottleneck is the graphics card.

Hi,  I'm considering to get an X220 stuffed with an i7, fast HD and lots of RAM.  However, after having my W500 replaced 3times within a period of 1 year I'm not so sure if it is a good idea to get a Lenovo.  Any links, hints or tips on the quality of the current X220?  The only major thing I came across until now was an issue with overheating. I'm planning to use the machine for some CPU heavylifting and it seems that a lot of X220 models are overheating and scaling down the CPU MHZ. I actually read something about that this behavior is by design. Is that really the case? I consider that the same as I would buy a Porsche that locks down at 70MPH. I don't see why a machine should scale down at 100%CPU speed.

Answer:Getting a X220 or Lenovo in gengeral?

Actually, you won?t be able to use any x220 (I?ve got a x220i with an i3) at its full capacity with AC power (65W adapter) only, while your battery is not attached to it (to protect it from the heat emitted by your hot cpu). This is the one big by-design flaw Lenovo incorprated at least into this one series of laptops. With a 90w ac adapter, you won?t have any problems, but it costs extra? You are free to think whatever you like? The issue is discussed with other X models herePeople are discussing alternative adapters here

Hello, i acquired recently a x220. The thing is, it will only turn on if you remove the battery and the CMOS battery, and, after plugging the AC adapter it will turn on automatically. Other thing is, after you turn on, you can plug the battery back and remove the AC adapter, it will use the battery normally. Someone had this issue? i need some advices.

Answer:Lenovo x220 won't turn on

I don't know, but how fresh is the CMOS battery? If unsure I think I'd try replacing it with a new one first.

Hi there, I apologize for the rudimentary question... I was recently given the X220 as a gift. It seems great--but I need to install programs, burn CDs, and watch DVDs on this thing! To do so, what do I need to buy? Can I get any old CD/DVD reader, or do I have to buy the Ultrabase 3 + something else? I can't believe how impossible it is to find this out when browsing the website! Thanks,~Kalyx

Answer:Using CDs and DVDs with the Lenovo X220

The least costly solution would be to buy an external DVD drive with a USB connection that can be plugged into the USB port on your X220.  There are many on the market.

Hello Everyone! I just recieved my new X220 by UPS this morning and I've been loving using it, Windows 7 is not as bad as I had expected it to be (I've usedOS X since '05.) and the keyboard is great, and the trackpoint too. Overall I'm very impressed with the hardware so far. I am wanting to install linux on this because I miss the comfort of the bash shell. So I loaded up my flash drive with UNetBootin as I usually would do for a USB install since this has no cd drive. When I get the thinkpad splash screen I hit F12 to go into boot options and I selected the correct USB drive, but when I hit enter to boot from it...the screen goes black for a second, then comes back to the boot menu. Any ideas as to why it might not be working?

I purchased an x220 with and I7 processor a month ago and have been able to use it for less than 1 week,  On the 5th day of use I pressed the power on button and nothing happened.  I recycled the power process (removed he battery, disconnected the AC and waited for a minute then replaced - nothing - sent back to Lenovo.  Three days later it is back - stating they replaced the Systems Board - it works for 3 more days then the same thing happens.  It is back for a second time now and I am being told it will be 2-3 more weeks due to aparts shortage.  (I would think they could contact the OEM and have a part flown in, but I am sure that would cost too much money).  It will 2+ days before a person i would like to elevate it to will call me back.  I do not consider this customer service - more like abuse.  So this beautiful laptop that I can't wait to use is spending more time back home at Lenovo than with me. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Hello! So, i have this relatively old x220 (i7-ed), r9-n8r (if that helps), that I've bought second-hand last December. I had no problems with it until now, and I've kinda caused them myself, i guess. So, first, I've installed an Ubuntu in place of the Win7Pro that it came with. It was then when it started - the scanner (that i need to swipe over on each power-on) started going "too many failed attempts" after each failed swipe. But then i had the stupidity to assume that resetting the fingerprints in BIOS would just let the power button do it's job. Turning the PC on, that is. Nope. It doesn't react. Also, now, when i plug the power cable in, the battery LED just blinks 6 times and goes black again. More exactly, it blinks three times, then another time, slightly longer, then two more fast blinks, and it goes black. Any easy way to solve that? Thanks in advance!

Question: X220 Sleep Issues

X220 WIFI SLEEP DOESN'T WORK AFTER SLEEP INC BRIGHTNESS CONTROLS> PLEASE HELP TRIED EVERYTHING!

Hello,

I have an X220 model 4291. Windows 7 64bit.

I use the sleep feature consistently. I have rebuilt it at least 10 times now with different driver orders and have read many web pages relating to this issue. Its taken a massive amount of my time & I'm about to give up and just get rid of it. So far no driver installation order has resolved the situation & I am at the latest software levels inc the bios.

I've also unchecked the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and messed around with the other power management options to no avail.

Currently only the Lenevo applications sit on top of the base build and no other applications have been installed.

So wondering if anyone has a miracle cure who had the same issue and can HELP ME as its driving me absolutely nuts.

Cheers,
Sparky

Moderator Message:  Topic edited  - plus you need to state the problem more clearly. as it not very evident what it actually is..... and why you think that what you have tried already would/should/could change anything related to the perceived issue.

Answer:X220 Sleep Issues

The issue occurs when the laptop is put into sleep mode and upon resume you lose the wifi card. So if I put the computer into sleep manually using the "FN F4" keys or if it goes to sleep by the parameters set in the power options i.e.. Sleep in 15 minutes. You can tell that there is a problem by looking at the sleep light when the lid is closed. This for a while is lit and then at some point is totally switches off, while it is lit if you resume the wifi comes back okay. However when the sleep light is no longer lit, 100% of the time when you resume using the power button, opening the lid doesn't seem to restart it, there is no wifi and the only way to re-enable it is to reboot the machine. No "FN F5" keys work and the OS says the card is switched off, "try switching on and reconnecting". The manual switch on the side of the laptop also does nothing. The brightness controls also are affected and cannot be adjusted as reported in the other threads. There was some mention of installing lenovo drivers and up to date versions in various orders but I still haven't managed to crack it. The WIFI is also slow on this laptop and during iplayer viewing I get insufficient bandwidth problems. Only this laptop suffers and our other household pcs/laptops which are much older do not suffer from this even if you are directly opposite the router. The card is an Intel 6205. If I need to rebuild again that's fine but I've never had to rebuild a machi... Read more

Hey guys!

Wondering if anyone else is having similiar issues...

Recently installed windows 10 (64bit) on my x220 (core i5 @2.6, 4gb ram.) With all the headaces I might be going back to win 7 pretty soon...

First, my wifi keeps dropping about every 10 minutes. Only way to get it working again is if I restart the computer. I've tried several different drivers, all which are doing the same.

My sound is skipping/lagging every few seconds. Its horrible... I've tried so many different drivers its insane, same problem.

Maybe every half hour the desktop will lock and nothing works for a few minutes. Also I cant get access to the task manager during this time.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any or all of these problems, and if there was any solution found? I'm hoping I can get this working normal so I wont have to revert back to win 7, kind of like the new features.

Thanks!

Answer:x220 Windows 10 Issues

I have problem with X220 + Win10 aswell.I was not able to install until I found out that the BIOS setting of X220 default of UEFI/Legacy Boot priority is Legacy. But that makes the installer freeze at boot up. I have changed it to UEFI to get the installer working. But now I have problem booting X220 without Ultrabay. When I remove the Ultrabay, stacks at boot up right after the blue Windows logo. Ultrabay has a HDD inside, maybe something is wrong in the boot script....But beside that I do not have any problem like you. Question: X220 Heat issues?

Hi all, I just recently received a new x220 and while it has been very nice in most aspects, I am a bit worried about heat.  When doing simple tasks (i.e. browsing) the cpu's idle at ~ 49° celcius.  When stressing the system, the cpu temperature rises to about 90-95° celcius. Is this normal?  Will this high heat reduce the lifetime of my battery/other hardware?  Also, is it safe to run games or other intensive applications if they result in such high temperatures? In the case that this is a problem, would I void the warranty if I remove the heat sink and added additional heat-conductive fluid? [edit: ] also, the fan constantly runs at about ~3600 rpm Thanks!

Answer:X220 Heat issues?

What you are seeing is normal. You have to remember that the x220 has what is essentially a desktop processor inside the chassis of a netbook. This processor will also dynamically overclock itself if temperature and power allows it. On my x220, running prime95 for a minute or two is enough to take my temperatures from 50C to 80C. When I stop the program, it takes only 10 seconds for the temperature to drop from 85C to 50C. You do not need to worry about your processor going over 100C as it will automatically throttle down when the temperature gets close. I have to hand it to lenovo for the great design of the cooling on this computer. My laptop doesn't experience the lound fan whine, so even on the maximum setting I really have to listen carefully to hear the noise, but it's enough to cool the processor down in seconds. If you want to push your processor without getting such high temperatures you have two options: Buy a larger laptop (larger heatsink), or use a desktop. On my desktop i installed a really big aftermarket heatsink and my temperature never goes above 50C even under maximum load for hours. [EDIT]It looks like you do have the fan issue. If it's only the RPM and no lound whine, I recommend getting the latest bios or waiting for the next version as it might fix this. If you have a lound annoying whine, I recommend calling tech support and ask about replacing the mainboard. This particular problem is frequent, but by no means universal. My x220 is... Read more

I am having quite a bit of trouble recording simple music cd's from music I have on my system. After recording with no errors I play it back in either of my auto's and the first 18 songs are fine. However as I get to songs 18 thru 22 I get an increasing amount of static in the recording. On rare occasions my system produces one that is static free: Thus I know that my system is capable of doing a recording right! I have tried: different recorders, closing down all programs, and disconnecting myself off of the LAN. All to no avail.

I am using Windows Xp SP2, Nero 7 Essential, Sony DRU710A CD/DVD recorder, 700mh Memorex cd's and my system has over 2 gbs of ram and a Athlon XP 2200+ cpu running at 1.8 mh.

So I looking for some guidance, help, thoughts on what I am doing wrong, or what is wrong with my setup.

Hi, I recently got Lenovo X220, and installed Crucial SSD c300 and transferred the image from the existing hard drive (so no clean install of windows 7).  From what I read, I should be able to take advantage of Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 since it was not a clean install and all partitions from the original hard drive is still preserved.  However,  can someone tell me how to turn this feature on?  Or is this automatic once the laptop recognizes SSD?  I looked under Toolbox, but could not find anything.  Thank you.

Answer:X220 Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0

EE is a set of optimizations made to the operating systems and drivers. It's not an explicit setting.

Hello Champs,I know a bit of software & hardware but have been first time to the Caching thing so Need some Help. I had this X220 with Window 7 but i changed it to Windows 8.1 recently. In recent HP laptops i've seen they setup mSATA for caching for better speed from factory. Can i setup something like that for better performance. I know I can install windows separately on mSATA but that is only 32 GB not enough so i want the Cache type settings?   P.S. I have 32GB mSATA installed in system as Unallocated as i didnt need it. I have read something here ANOTHER POST but couldnt get it work for myself

I have an older x220 thinkpad; when running backup it gave me an error message that there was not enough room (but there was plenty of room on the external drive!).  I made the mistake of deleting the backups from the external drive manually.  Now, it hangs up.  I thought perhaps deleting the backups showing in the system would force it to start over with a brand new backup instead of looking for the old ones; however when I try to delete the backups from the list in lenovo backup, it also hangs up.  I would like to find a way to clear all of the history out of the backup system so that it will start over with a new image (and work, of course).  Any ideas?

My doughter's laptop falled down from the table what caused that the LCD is not working correctly. It lights a little bit, but stays almost dark. I checked the LCD, and it looks that the one is OK (I put it into another X220 t and it works. So it looks that there's something different broken (also I mounted the correctly working LCD from another X220 t into the one and doesnt work either). What could it be? Where should I find the reason of that? Could it be something with the motherboard or what? As mentioned before, the LCD lights a little bit, but doesn't show anything, stays dark (a little lighter than as is OFF).

Answer:Lenovo X220 tablet LCD backlight.

I'm guessing you blew a fuse on the motherboard.  They are VERY fast burning fuses and easy to blow.  Unfortunately, most places cannot fix that sort of problem without replacing the board.

Strange problem I'm having, my x220 wont recieve any updates from windows. Ive re-installed multiple times, tried many fixes and nothing has worked. Most recently I just reinstalled the whole laptop and first thing I ran was the lenovo system updater, it's stuck on installing windows 7 update module kb2459268 64 bit.. when you goto windows updates it just checks for updates forever. I bought this system used and I originally installed windows 7 and updated to windows 10 which worked, but windows 10 was unsupported and the computer had issues powering off and going to/waking up from sleep. Ever since then when I reinstalled windows 7 I have had this issue. I cant work with a pc that doesn't update... Any tips greatly appreciated. Brad

I've got strange problem with two Lenovo X220 laptops. After disassembling the laptop for cleaning and thermal paste exchange, I can't start both laptops. I've got no idea what could happened. Both laptops looks dead. I've checked all connections - looked OK. Any ideas what could happened? What did I do? After I conected the fans, I placed the motherboards by error to the wrong casing. After I started the laptops I found out that the motherboard were switched (I checked the motherboard s/n in BIOS and compared them with the sticker on the bottom of the casing). So after that I took the motherboards out of the casing again and placed them to the correct casing. And after that I wasn't able to start the laptops any more Anybody knows what could it be?

I have a quesiton I have not found an answer to. Will the X220 charge the battery, when plugged into the 90W charger (42T4430), if the computer is in use?  I used my computer on battery for a few hours, drained the battery to 30%.  Then I went inside to plug it in and keep working.  After 4 hours of working, and it plugged in to the wall the battery still indicates 30%. The same thing happened when I was using my docking station.  I arrived at work yesterday with 76% battery.  After 8 hours on the docking station, I still indicated 76% battery life.  My previous (other major name brand) laptops all would charge even if I was working on the laptop.  Is the X220 different by design?  Do I have to shut down and plug in to recharge?

One fine day, touch/pen support simply started working. I did everything I could, reinstalled Windows 8 from scratch, even installed Windows 8.1 in a separate partition. I used the DzPen, MTouch drivers (and tried various combinations of the versions). All of them fail saying 'A supported tablet was not found on this system' I upgraded the BIOS recently - that is the only thing I could think of, so I actually tried an older versio, but still no good. My tablet PC that costs close to 2K dollars is now very simply a laptop - and it is past the warranty. What gives? It's kind of sad as I considered other tablet pcs and disregarded them as Lenovo was supposedly superior in terms of hardware/drivers....

Hello everyone, I purchased a Lenovo Z7080 laptop and realized and feel  "electro static" on the surface. Most people do not sense it but if you are careful you can feel it. I went to the Lenovo retail store in China and experienced the same from many models.Anybody has the same experience? The workaround I chose is simply put some dielectric material (a thick paper) on top of the area around the keyboard and touch pad.I may be too sensitive. Good afternoon all.  I'm hoping someone here can help me with this.  I bought this Lenovo ideapad 320-15ABR at Thanksgiving and received it at the beginning of December.  I bought it mainly so that I could use Photoshop, Microsoft Office and to watch TV/movies online.  The only things I've installed on this computer since receiving it was the Photoshop 2018 and Avast Antivirus.  I disabled the Windows Defender antivirus and I couldn't find McCaffee anywhere on my computer.  Anyway, I've used this computer to watch movies a few times now for the last several weekends and at least once during a movie (either through Netflix or Amazon Prime) I will get an error message that reads something along the lines of:  "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart."  Basically the blue screen of death.  It's incredibly frustrating because I've been happy with Lenovo products in the past.  I'm also not a huge fan of Windows 10 and while I don't blame Lenovo for the changes Microsoft keeps making, these new changes coupled with the constant blue screens of death on a brand spanking new computer have made me a very unhappy customer.  Because of the changes with Windows, I'm not familiar at all with how to troubleshoot this problem (or even where to start) to see if there is something wrong with my laptop hardware or if it's a driver error.  If I can I'd like to try to understand how to find out what... I have a client that says the little circles that come up every time he touches the screen is giving him a headache.  Does anyone know how to shutoff the response of the pen each time it touches the screen,  but still have the pen work? Thanks.

Answer:X220 Pen touch on screen: How to disable the circles that show when the pen has touched the screen

You need to disable the cricles that appaers after touching the screen, there is no such option, I would suggest you to please perform the workarounds.

1.To remove fingerprints, etc., from the touch panel display, use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth or a piece of absorbent cotton. Do not apply solvents to the cloth.2. Gently wipe foreign particles and dust from the touch panel with one side of the cloth.3. Wipe smudges or fingerprints with the other side of the cloth, or with a clean cloth.4. After using the cloth, wash it with a neutral detergent.

After this, please check if the issue resolved.

Sameer

Hey all, I have the Lenovo Thinkpad X220 that's done me good for the last 3ish years. However, recently, I've mad some connectivity problems with the wifi. I will start the computer and it will connect but with 1 bar. It'll reach at most 1-3 bars, for any network, and in any place (my school campus and also at home). Usually I have no problems with my connectivity but now it's become an issue. I was wondering what could be the problem? It must be the computer, but I don't know what the next step to take is. I've run a scan on my computer and found nothing wrong with it using Spybot S&D. I'm not completely tech-savvy so I'm not sure what the next step is. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you!

Hello Everyone! I am having inconsistent performance with my Lenovo X220 Tablet/Notebook and the Ultra Series 3 Docking station.  Occasionally, I am able to boot the system from the docking station and sign on through my external keyboard and monitor.  However, sometimes I must open the tablet up and turn on from the laptop itself, when this occurs, if I close the laptop lid, it turns the system off.  The most recent issue I've had when downloading drivers and other tasks that required rebooting the computer, when attempting to restart the computer in the docking station is not possible, i.e., not from the docking station and not from the computer.  In these instances I have had to remove the computer from the docking station to restart and then place it back into the docking station once Windows has started.  Again, with this type of start-up, I must keep the tablet open to keep it powered on. Is there a specific "docking mode" control somewhere on the computer so that when I'm using the docking station I don't have to go through these different steps to start up the computer?  I was unable to find any solutions to this in the user manual and I searched this site and did not find anyone else having similar problems - so I'm guessing there is a simple solution that I'm unaware of. Thank you for any assistance provided!
