Moving files to external, formatting then moving back.

Question: Moving files to external, formatting then moving back.

Hi everyone.
I just bought a new SSD.
I plan to whipe my old drive and put the OS onto the SSD. On my current drive I quite a few games.

The question I have is about backing up games/moving the files.
I have steam, origin and battlenet. I tried to use steam back up before, it stopped working and now I have a file that I can not delete.

I have not found a battlenet backup, or an Origin backup.
Due to all of the games being digital, I do not want to spend a day downloading all of my games over again.

The question I have:
Is it possible to move the files (i.e. programx86 --> steamapps) onto my external, then when the clean install is done, move the files back to the same location?

Is this a viable/possible solution, or what would you recommend I do to spare my data cap/time?

Thanks all.

Preferred Solution: Moving files to external, formatting then moving back.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Moving files to external, formatting then moving back.

If your system is working well the best way to do this is to take an image of the old drive and then restore it back to the SSD, or simply direct clone the old drive onto the SSD. I've had good results with Aomei Backupper to do this. If SSD space is a problem you could remove data and unused progs first, and do disk cleanup.

If the system is on its last leg, you're probably going to have to reinstall the progs onto a fresh install of Win7 on the SSD.

In either case, back up your valuable personal data.

I've recently bought a Seagate External 320Gb HD, and am moving all my recently ripped CD files from my Internal HD to it. But it's taking AGES!!!! (About 170Gb worth ) Is there any way it can be speeded up at all? I'm already using a Gold plated USB lead!ThanksIan

Answer:Moving Files from HD to External HD - So S-L-O-W!

Hi, 170Gb is quite a bit to move, I think you may just have to be patient:-(Anyway, how are you moving them, individually or in a block or by moving a Folder with the files in it?

Hi,

Not quite simple at the title suggests unfortunately.

I've got a WD Passport external HDD.
Sometimes its ticking and sometimes not so I need to move my files from it.
Windows sometimes see the files but cant copy them to a new HDD even if its one word document it just hangs.

I have somewhat been able to see it in Computer management.
It doesnt always show, even in 'computer'

Windows says it needs checking for errors so I start the process then it hangs.
I've go onto PartedMagic to use CloneZilla and it hangs finding the connected HDD's.

Any help at all. There is only around 500mb on there I need to backup.

Hello gents, I will soon be replacing my current pc (computer A) with a hand me down from my dad. It's an approx. 3 yr old Alienware (computer B). My initial plan was to purchase an external hard drive to transfer files I wanted to keep from A to B I need the extra storage anyway. I would be using the system recovery cd to restore B to factory.

My 1st issue is this. My current hard drive is FAT32. I think NTFS would be the best way to go with on computer B. Do I need to convert my hd on comp.A to NTFS before transferring files to the external, and then to comp. B? When I get the new external hd, does that need to be formatted? (FYI I’m planning on getting a Seagate FreeAgent 250gb external, if it matters) My intuition tells me that the formats of all the drives needs to be the same, but I really don’t have enough knowledge on this type of stuff….

The 2nd issue is whether this is the best method to use to get files from A to B. The old computer is on it’s last legs and has a ton of crap on it, slowing it down. Much of the stuff I want to leave behind…

Hope I provided enough info…. In the end the question I would like answered is, what would the best way to get files (music, photos, excel, db etc) from computer A to computer B.

Hi! I've been here before and you guys were great help! This is a totally different issue this time. When I realized my computer was running very slow and other issues I checked and found that my C drive has 149 GB used space and only 699 MB free space.

I cleaned it up and defragged up as good as I could but realized I need more harddrive space. So I bought an external harddrive after friends told me it was extremely easy to transfer files and "stuff" to it. Now that I have it (1.5 TB Greendrive, 2.0 usb) I am terrified to try to move stuff. I think that my pictures probably take a lot of space so I could move them and the Picasa program. I also have a lot of financial records on Quicken and assume it would be wise to move them as well.

I've got no idea where to start and am scared of losing everything. Thought it might be easier to do it right than have you help me straighten it out after screwing it up.

Can you be of help?

If the drive is recognized by your computer, there shouldn't be any problems. You've got the options of simply drag copying your DATA files from the old drive to the new one, then deleting them from the old drive or cut and paste which will move the files from your old drive to your new one.

You'll then simply need to point your Picasa and Quicken apps to the new location of the directories (folders/files) to access them. I would however, leav... Read more

hi all,

originally i had my itunes and all the song files on my internal 'c' drive. when i bought an external drive i thought it would make sense to move it all there, which is my 'i' drive.

now it looks like all i have really done is duplicated itunes and all the files onto my 'i' drive, which obviously has not freed up any space on my 'c' drive. now, i had the thought of just deleting everything related from the 'c' drive, but the problem is that itunes on my 'i' drive, still searches for the songs on my 'c' drive.

basically, how do i tell my itunes program that the songs are now in my 'i' drive? am i gonna have to go through each individual song on my itunes 'i' drive and tell it to search for it in there, rather than the 'c' drive? hope not, cos it'll take yonks.

thanks in advance

Answer:Moving itunes and Files to External Drive

I have not tried with itunes files, but basically it seems you may not have copied all the file attributes, or,created a shortcut, rather than a copy.
I suggest you go to tools, view, tick show hidden files, then copy to the backup drive

Hi All

Just after some guidance on the best way to move my video files to an external drive

I am on a Laptop if it makes any difference (don't want Windows to have any issues if drive is not connected)

Currently stored in default location (C:\users\paul\videos) and will be moving them to e:\videos (USB Drive)

I would like to make the external location the default so that any new videos I put on go to the external drive, but also keep the C:\users\paul\videos folder there for me to manually use if need be

I see 2 ways of doing this

1) right click on videos in explorer and in the location tab there is a move option (I assume this moves everything to the new location and sets this as default?)

2) if I enable libraries, I can add the external drive as a video library, then set this as default for all new additions (think I would then just need to manually move my media across to new location)

Is there any difference in doing either of these (number 1 looks easiest, but would this cause issues if the drive is not connected?)

Hope the above makes sense
Thanks

I am contemplating reinstalling Windows XP Pro and wondering if I can move programs like Zonealarm, SuperAntispy, Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster, Revo Uninstaller, WordWeb, JAVA, Adobe Reader 9, etc. to my external hard drive and then move them back to the computer hard drive after reinstalling Windows XP?  The reason I ask is that the version of Hughesnet that I have only allows 200 MB daily for downloads and downloading all those programs would eat up 200 MB pretty quick.     I was also wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with Spyzooka?  Tucows gave it a 5 Cow rating and the reviews I've read have been positive.  Thanks

Answer:Moving .exe files to external hard drive

You can't. Programs have to be reinstalled.Forget about Spyzooka. With Super, and 'Bytes, you're percfectly fine.

I have a Maxtor 1V external hard drive and would like to move files from C drive to free up space.
I Have little free space left on C. All files are backed up on the external drive.
Do I have to open each file on C and delete it? Or is there an easier way?
I didn't do this as I moved them to the external drive. I thought move meant they went from C to the external.
I don't see previous discussion on this subject-if there is please direct me.
Thanks

Answer:External Hard drive and moving files

If all the files are in one folder .. and you copied the whole folder .. you can delete the folder.

I'd check and make sure all the files are readable in the external ...
Then I'd probably make another backup .. Maybe to a DVD ..
before I deleted anything.

I've bought a Toshiba STOR.E D10 Zwart 1,5TB so that I can use e-SATA to connect it to my laptop. I've got a HP Probook 6555b with Windows 7 64bits. When I use the USB connection (this hard disc has both USB an eSATA) all works fine, no problem at all.

When I connect it with the eSATA cable I can find the external hard disc and brwose through the files that are on it. However when I try to move files from my laptop onto the harddisc (or the other way around) after about 10 seconds it slows down and stops half way copying. Next Windows Explorer is not responding.

Does anyone have an idea about what the solution to this problem can be?

Answer:Issues moving files on/from external harddisc using eSATA

I found this solution on the Toshiba forum:
"I had also problems with stor.e d10 2 TB und it is HDD.

Then with the program paragon diskmanager prof I received the information that the partition has an invalid
geometry value.
I deleted the partition und made a new one with paragon diskmanager.
Since then the external drive works fine und it is recognized in bios and in win7/32bit. "

You could give that a try.

I have a 119gig .bkf file on my desktop and I'm trying to move it to a new 320gig external HD. I keep getting a message there's not enough space on the disk. If I reformat the external HD from FAT to NTFS would that work or do I have start the backup utility and save to the external HD? The .bkf file on my desk top took almost 8 hours to create. Don't want to do it again if I don't have to. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Hello, i am facing a very disturbing problem right now... On my external hard disk, i tried moving a folder that contained all my important files into the hidden folder named $RECYCLE.BIN.... this was successful, but in my quest to secure the folder more, i tried moving it into one of the folders named "S-1-5-21-3653930289-2530686896-918681669-1001", this was beginning to take a long time so i pressed Cancel. Only to find the folder missing, And i cant open the above named folder for access.... While checking the hard disk property and diskspace, it shows that the folder is still occupying its space.. I tried undoing the move but i still cant find it... any help??

Answer:How to recover Cancelled Moving Files From an external drive

Boy oh Boy that is the first time I have ever head of anybody trying to do that. What in the world made you try that? The only thing I can think of is doing a search for $RECYCLE.BIN using Windows Explores and see if there is a folder with your things in it.

Just bought a 250 GB Seagate External USB Hard Drive.

While Transferring/Copying all the folders and files from my Desktop contents (12 GB) I received the following Windows(Not Seagate's) Error which was "0x80070057"

ALSO:I made sure no file being transferred was IN USE by any process so that's not the issue.

I Googled it and I am still lost as to what it "0x80070057" means OR BETTER how to avoid it?
I've also ran MSFT's various disc scanners/fixers and a few non-MSFT and no error were ever found so I do not see how it's the fault of the new External Drive...

HELP? How to fix/repair or avoid this problem??

thanks

I recently bought an external hard drive, which I wanted to use to store, music, and programs I use for my 'personal' PC use. I cut and pasted files from my existing hard drive onto my new external hard drive; which I had connected as per instructions via USB.

Now when I try and open the files, or move them into a different location - other hard drive, different folder etc; I get messages to the effect of "Cannot copy 'blah' Cannot find the specified file" or when I try and open a document in Word I get "The document name or path is not valid.".

However if I open up and view the drive in Windows Explorer, I can see the file names, types, sizes all correct.

What is happened?

Someone told me that copying data onto the hard drive 'wasn't supported'; but that would then make the idea of having the drive seem almost redundant.

As an aside, what's all this talk of 'enclosures' in relation to external HD's?
Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Hello guys,

I am wondering if anyone can help me figure out what on earth is causing these strange freezes.

I have two external hard drives with these specs:
HGST HDS 5C4040ALE630 - 4 TB NTFS Partition - GPT
Hitachi HDS5C3020ALA632 - 2 TB NTFS Partition - MBR
(Both are encrypted with Bitlocker, might have something to do with it)

Both are hooked up via USB3.0 ports (with 3.0 cables) directly into the motherboard.

So what is the problem? Well I can access them both at the same time, no problem. I can copy and move files from one of the drives to my internal drives and vice versa, even at the same time. But, I can NOT copy or move files from one drive directly to the other. The transfer process will start but freeze after a few dozen megabytes and stay frozen until I cancel the transfer, and wait a few minutes for it to react.

I use TeraCopy, I have uninstalled and tried the normal windows 7 file transfer but that hasn't helped either. Furthermore, with windows 7's default file transfer I wasn't able to cancel it and I eventually had to shut down the pc.

So right now I have to move files from drive A to an internal drive C, then move the file from drive C to drive B. It is simply annoying and I do not understand what is happening.

I've also checked the drives, they have no errors, no bad sectors, they are running great (no noises either).

Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance!

Answer:Moving files between two Bitlocked external harddrives closely freezes

Do any errors come up saying anything at all about bitlocker? Because i think you are probably right when you said that bitlocker could have something to do with it because what bitlocker does is encrypt to secure the files you want secured. So i would try turning that off first and then try and transfer the files you need/want and see if it succeeds. If it doesnt; post back.

I backed up using an external drive prior to resetting HP desktoop to factory settings.

When I tried to restore the files I couldn't find them in any of the libraries. Where did they go? I did reinstall programs like Microsoft Office 2003.

If you actually backed up the files to the external drive, you should see them there. If they aren't there, you may have a made a mistake when you did the backup. Really need more details to help further. How you backed up, etc.

i am almost done buliding my new computer and i was wondering if i can take my 40gig hdd out of my old pc and put it in the new one with out formating? if i dont have too what do i do so this can be done do i go into device manger and just delete everything while under safe mode thin shut down and move it to the new one and start up and let it find everything? because it is a pain to update all my software, games and stuff on dialup and that would make it easy and not take 2 or 3 weeks to get it done

a big thanks for any help

Answer:can this be done? moving a hdd with out formatting

It's kinda doable. It's tricky though, and you have a good chance of it not working. It depends how diffrent the two systems are. Also, windows 98se usually hands a switch like this with a lot of complaints but it will ultimately work. Where as the newer OS's like XP will quite often just fail out right.

In either case, it's a bad idea to do it. Even if you do get it going you're just asking for problems, and it will most likely provide you with them.

Ultimately it would most likely be quicker to fully reinstall windows, and save yourself a lot of problems.

Dear Sir/Madame,
I was moving video files (AVI) from an external backup drive (WD Element) to another external backup drive (Seagate expansion) after having moved another video file from my laptop (Acer) to that Seagate external drive. The night before I had moved some video files from the WD to the Seagate with no problem but using a different laptop (Sony). These video files are all rather large and I can tell that the space is still being allocated on the Seagate because while the folder cannot be seen the space that was there is still being used by the Seagate because I am missing over 100GB which would be about the size of that now missing folder.

What happened was there was a message that the Seagate drive could not be recognized while the files were in the process of being moved to that drive from the WD. This is after I had already moved a video file of about 26GB with no problem into that now missing folder. When I saw the message I attempted several times to move files to that Seagate drive but I could not so I unplugged the Seagate drive from that laptop (Acer) then reinserted it into the usb port. I got a repair message that said it needed to be repaired because some files were corrupted and that no data would be lost but the drive would be unavailable during the repairs so I checked ok. It took only about 30 seconds and it said the repairs were completed and the drive was available but I noticed that the folder that I was moving the video files to was n... Read more

Answer:Was moving files to external drive, drive not recognized and lost all

Dear Sir/Madame,
Update to the problem with the missing folder, I use the Acer to record audio and video files to it -- I saw a message that it was low on memory so I decided to connect the WD elements external drive to free up some storage. When I attached the WD Elements drive as the drive booted up to be recognized the missing folder appeared as an option to be opened but the folder never resided on that drive it was on the Seagate drive (the folder is entitled documentary footage moved from WD Elements). I clicked on it just to see what would happen and received this message "E:\Documentary footage from WD Elements is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or Internet, and then try again. If the l."

So I thought let me connect the Seagate to see if Windows will find it there but when I connected the Seagate I still could not access the folder. It appears that for some reason Windows 10 confused that the folder was resident on the wrong drive (WD Elements) during the transfer of files to the original folder at the time it stated it could not access the Seagate drive so perhaps that is the reason the folder became missing.

I do not know what to believe as I still suspect that this is a windows 10 problem and not an external drive problem but I do not know how to fix it. My initial thought is... Read more

I've been finding this hard to describe and search for so I'm just going to upload a .gif to illustrate my problem.

I want to stop the window moving back onto the screen when the mouse is against the screen edge. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or even just what the 'feature' is called in Windows?

Alright sooooo.

I completely reformatted my computer. I have two drives.

I deleted/created partitions on both, and chose to format/install Windows xp on the C: driver. The format got to 100%, then said the format couldn't be completely probably due to a bad hard drive. I switched out my drive for another spare I had thinking I just got unlucky and my drive had died...

To my surprise, I got the same error with a completely seperate hard drive. Trying various things, I swapped the xp disk into my other DVD-Rom on my computer and the formatting went fine!

Xp was installed, no problems. Now, however, my CPU usage spikes to 100% when doing very minimal tasks such as moving a window around the screen (computer lags, leaving traces of the window around the screen) or even scrolling up and down on a web page with the mouse wheel.

Weird thing is, I can navigate both hard drives just fine. I don't know if my CPU is dying, motherboard dying, or what... But is there anyone that can help me out with this?

I'm currently reinstalling all my drivers praying that this somehow magically fixes it

Answer:CPU usage 20% just moving mouse, 100% moving windows or scrolling websites!

I have a client that has to regularly move emails from his inbox to a PST on his company shared drive. Moving files under 100kbs seem fine but this client needs to regularly move emails upwards of 5Mbs in size to his PST on the share. When he does move these files his outlook gets hung up to the point of completely freezing everything on his computer just to move the email. It can take upwards of 10-20 minutes to move one file.

The troubleshooting I have performed:
-I tried setting his network adapter to 100 Mbs Full Duplex, didn't appear to do anything
-Speed test his connection, he is running about 1.2-1.5 Mb down and 1.5+ Upload, so no issue there.
-I tested moving a 15Mb file to his shared drive, this seemed to be uploading fine, after a minute or 2 it was nearly half done, so this leads me to believe the issue is more pertaining to outlook.
-I then killed his outlook profile, recreated him a new one and remapped the PSTs.
-Had him test moving files again, and the same issue is still occurring.
-The client also reports this was not always an issue and had recently started happening.

At this point I am stuck and would like any advise anyone may have to offer for a solution.

I am a bit worried because my cursor started hovering over my programs when I went to click the all programs on my start button. I'm not sure why but i'm pretty sure it wasn't my mouse. The reason being my cursor started hovering up and down over programs and I think it might of clicked something. I'm not sure if it did since i shut it off directly after I saw it move. I'm not sure what to do since i use mcafee total protection and it didnt find anything.

So, I just installed a RETAIL copy of Win 7 on my main PC and activated it. (not the PC in my sig)

Then, my motherboard takes a crap on me. Its going to be a warranty issue, but who knows how long that will take to get resolved.

I need to do a lot of work for the next month or two. So I fired up my back up PC and want to install my new Win7 on it.

Will my new install of Win7 on my back up PC activate without any issues?

I will want to move my Win7 back to my main PC and will probably replace the harddrive at the same time. Will I have any issues there activating it back on my main PC?

Answer:Moving Win 7 to another PC then back.

if your are going to be using it less then 120 days dont use a key.

Question: Moving back to XP

ohk, so i've given up for now. I've given W7 a go and decided to leave the bug fixing to people who know what they're doing. I will definately upgrade, but i'll wait till the retail release.

when i did the install from XP, i opted to keep my old files and settings and programs and such and it stored them in c:\Windows.old.

i was wondering if there is an easy way to just revert back to my old xp and restore all those programs and files the way they were, or if i have to do it the long way. if i were to make a guess, i'd say all i have to do is put the XP disc in, boot from it, and select repair. is this true?

thanks ^_^

Answer:Moving back to XP

Ummmm.....I don't think that you have an "un-upgrade" option at this point. I think you will have to backup your data and such to a portable drive and then put in the XP cd and start the installation over again.

What sorts of problems have you run into with Windows 7? For a lot of us, the problems have been very minimal and most have a pretty easy solution. It might be better to post a few of your issues/concerns and see if we cannot get them resolved for you, rather than reverting back to Windows XP.

Hey, i was on here a few months ago with my new water system! i dont really overclock, and having to point a moderately noisy fan at my open case isnt somethin ive loved doing, so im gonna move back to air cooling. (need the case open because of the tubes, which cancels most of the airflow through the case)

I was wonderin if anyone had suggestions on geforce7800 aftermarket fans, and amd socket 939 fans.

Answer:moving from liquid back to air

Why not install the water cooling properly and close the case up? Surely, the kit doesn't mandate you leave the case open, right?

Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my question.I am going to move my computer to another location, eg another State and new house.I want to do a complete back up before the move just in case of a failure during or after the move. My Dell computer has a 500 Gig drive, of which about 160 to 180 Gig is used. Now obviously that is not all data but programs and data.I have run through the backup facility in XP SP3 and set it to put the backup on the desktop. The backup program tells me there is 81,576,577,488 bytes to process.1. Will a back up to desktop use additional space on my drive?2. Can I transfer that file to another source, say a CD Data disk?3. Will I be able to put my backup on just one disk?4. If there are more than one disk required how do I continue with the data transfer to the second and third disk and so on?5. AM I DOING THIS THE RIGHT WAY or is there an easier way to do it please?  Thank you ImnoGuru.

Answer:How to back up before moving house?

5. AM I DOING THIS THE RIGHT WAY or is there an easier way to do it please? For me, and I emphasize that this is a personal choice, the easiest way is to clone the source disk to another disk which also becomes bootable thereby having two "identical" disks which can be booted.  The destination disk can be removed and wrapped in cotton-wool for the trip.  I use XXClone.  It comes with comprehensive instructions and can make the destination disk bootable.  The destination disk does not need to be the same size or larger than the source but must be big enough to contain all the data/program files/system files being transferred.Cloning software may be freely available on your hard disk manufacturer's web site. Also see this discussion.Good luck

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought I heard somewhere a while back about how Windows keys are now hardcoded onto the bios, and as long as I install the correct version that came with my computer, it should self activate? Is this correct?

I'm coming from Linux and honestly after having used it for over 2 years, it's over complicated nature is starting to piss me off. I could just use an ISO from bittorrent that may have viruses or keyloggers included, but ideally I'd like to download an official ISO and get my Windows back. I never had any key on the bottom of my laptop so that's why I'm asking.

I would like to restore my default users accounts to C:\users..... but dont want to lock my self out in the process. How should I proceeed?

Background:

INITIAL SETUP - When I first started using Windows7, I had the default set up with:- Program files on C:\Program Files
- User files on C:\Users
This worked, but was problematic/inconvenient re backups.

MODIFIED SETUP. Using the tutorial here , I repartitioned my drive asd revised my set up to :- Program files on C:\Program Files
--------------------------------------
- User files on D:\Users
This worked for a while, but it took some time for me to realize that this is not really what I wanted, as the \Users location is really a mix of User Account files and true User Data. My desired endstate is shown below.

INTERIM (CURRENT) SETUP - In prep for my end-state, I currently now have this:- Program files on C:\Program Files
--------------------------------------
- User files on D:\Users
- User Data files on D:\UserData
END STATE, - My last and final step, not yet done, is to get to this:- Program files on C:\Program Files
- User files on C:\Users
--------------------------------------
- User Data files on D:\UserData
If I follow the steps outlined in this tutorial , to move from D:\Users to C\Users, are there any cautions I need to be aware of in terms of avoiding pitfalls that would prevent me from loggin back into my machine?

Answer:Moving the \Users folder back to where it was

I have used User Folders - Restore Default Location quite a few times to restore User folders to default location without any problems. If the Location tab is missing then rebuild them using the other option.

In the future you can copy any or all of each User folder to another drive and link it easier by rightclicking to add to the related Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums.

Answer:moving this back up (sound problem)

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download CWShredder and click on Fix (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. Also make sure to customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

Maybe I am trying something that isn't possible - or even practical! I am trying to move photos from my Picasa albums onto an SD media card. They transfer on the card when viewed on the PC, but when the card is returned to my camera it indicates 'No Images' when I try to view. Is there a method for doing this? Thanks. Casey

Answer:Moving Photos back to SD Card

The camera writes a bit of information to the card to make it work in the camera, that is why the camera thinks the card is empty when you load stuff from another source into it without this info. I have often wondered that if you take a picture with the camera to initialise the card and then download pictures in the correct format, would they become visible to the camera. If you try this and it works would you report back.

My M/B and CPU is dead and gone to silicone heaven. I know have an excuse to buy a new CPU and M/B and after being a die hard Intel customer for 14 years it's time for a change. So I'me moving back to AMD after 14 years and boy, has a lot changed since the days of AMD Athlon CPU's and overclocking was done with a pencil... (some of you may not be old enough to remember this, but before overclocking became mainstream you overclocked an AMD by using a pencil on the processor itself.)

Well in my old rig I had the following

PCU Cooler Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 (dinky cooler but cool on on CPU)
Intel Q9650 3.0GHz Processor(Deceased)
ASUS Rampage Extreme Rev 2 (Deceased)

HDD Seagate Barracuda 500GB RAID0
HDD Seagate Barracuda 500GB RAID1
HDD Seagate Barracuda 1TB NRP
PSU Enermax Revolution 850W (Peak output 920W)
I'm a big ASUS fan and this is probably the second M/B to have died in over 10 years, which is not bad. Therefore, I was looking at the following...

M/B: ASUS Crosshair V Formula/ThunderBolt (which is AMD AM3+)
Processor: AMD FX Series 6100 3.3GHz Black Edition 6 Core Processor Bulldozer

I am just curious if it is possible to re-install Windows XP Home once I have installed Windows 7 RC? I am pretty sure it is, but the main thing I am concerned with is re-validating the key for XP. Will I run into a problem if I ever wanted to move back down to XP before I upgrade to Win7 for good?

Answer:Moving back to WinXP from Win7RC

using the same key you should not have issues - with retail builds.

With an OEM key, you might have issues - but if you called M$ and explained, I think they would be willing to activate it for you.

Hi!
Recently, I upgraded my Laptop to Win 10. However, because a program doesn't work in Windows 10, I decided to go back to Windows 8.1. I did it through the "Settings" that you can find by clicking the "Start" button. After the computer restarts for Windows 8.1, it's all normal - Until after I enter in my password, the screen becomes black. The screen's not broken, because the mouse cursor is still there. I restarted it a coupon of times, took out the battery and everything, but it still won't work. Luckily, I still have most of stuff on my old HDD, so I can just use it. But I really want to use my SSD since it's much faster. I really hope someone can help me.

If I want to free up some space on my internal HD, is there any prblem with moving (for example) Photoshop to external HD? Will the program operated at the same speed or be a little more sluggish when it's comimg in on a USB cable?

Answer:Moving Programs to External HD

I strongly recommend you do NOT run installed applications from an external hard disk. Not only will they be significantly slower, but when the disk is off-line, they will, or course, be unavailable.

Pretty much as the title says. My task bar is locked and located on the right-hand side of my second monitor. Occasionally I'll go for it and realize that it is now located on the right-hand side of my primary monitor. Most recently this happened after bringing my computer back from screensaver.

One of my friends also experiences this problem.

Is there a known solution or workaround?

Answer:Taskbar keeps moving back to primary monitor

Hello TomatoSoup Welcome to the Ten Forums!

From the experience I have with a dual monitor setup I have to uncheck the smart bar option in UltraMON to use 10's extended task bar setting and then limit what you see on the second display's task bar portion there while the main stays on the primary display. I have to keep things that way in order to avoid simply ending up with the mirrored display instead. 10 works primarily from the primary where you may need to set the second to that.

Possible workaround? A 3rd party app called RocketDock is a portable form of task bar you can have set for bottom, top, or either side of the display including the option for auto hide. Most while not every desktop shortcut can be added by simply dragging the shorcut onto that bar inbetween the existing shortcuts it comes with for Explorer, Control Panel, Documents, Recycle Bin.

As a gag screenshot I kept adding anything and everything to the RocketDock bar as well as editing captures of the multiple Quick Launch type addon tool bars you can create plus numerous oversized desktop icons to show a hectic day on a dual display set up!

As you see there the RocketDock simply keeps expanding from the secondary display where is was set for the default across onto the primary when I kept adding things on and on and on! You won't actually need the 10 smart bar extension or try to keep fighting with 10 to keep the task bar over on the secondary since it will continue to automatically default to the... Read more

My Zone alarm and Vista didnt seem to like each other and so Zone alarm wouldn't uninstall even using Revo. I was advised to back up all my files and then do a factory restore, which I did onto an external hard disc.
I tried to use the Wizard to move the files back onto my machine but was told by the wizard that as backup had not been set up on my machine it could not do a transfer. I presume because I had reverted to a factory settings reinstall.
I can see my windows mail folder on my external hard drive. I have been able to copy and paste all my contacts and that is working well
My question to the panel is what is then the easiest way to move the messages folder back onto my machine? Can I move the whole folder and all its contents or can I go into the folder and just pull back the In and out box.
When I look into say the In box on my external backup all I see is a winmail.fol extension. What should I be looking for and doing Guys? this is driving me nuts!

Answer:moving backed up emails back into Vista

The email messages will be in files with the .eml extension.

If you locate those, then create folders in Windows Mail and
highlight the .eml files and drag them to the folders you just
created. It is not a good practice to store emails in the

Sometimes when I move the cursor across the screen, it causes my browser to go back to the previous page. This happens on different sites. It seems to be random and often happens a few times a day.

Is there anything in Win 7 I should check for?

If not, I will check for a virus.

Answer:Moving cursor sometimes causes FF browser to go back a page

I would uninstall/reinstall Firefox...before I began to suspect anything else.

Programs/files get damaged all the time...such damage can affect performance.

Hi, I'm trying to learn how to keep my desktop clean.

I have some specific problems that I need some help with, but I could also use some general advice as well. Specifically, right now I have popups from "Offer Optimizer" or "xlime" that I can't seem to get rid of.

I have the following security programs:
1. Norton Antivirus - It runs a scan every week, which brings up several things I know shouldn't be there. I try to delete the files, but Norton is only able to delete some and says, "Delete failed."

I then go to the files themselves to try to delete them. This is sometimes successful, sometimes not. Sometimes I get an error message that says, "Cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk." Even if I delete a bad file, sometimes it just shows up the next week.

2. Spybot S&D (1.3) - I run a scan about once a week. Every time it brings up the same stuff that I know should not be there. I click "Fix Problems." Spybot then indicates that the problems are all fixed, but they show up again next week. Some that I can't seem to ever get rid of are "Twain Tech" files.

3. Hijack This - I just downloaded this program. I tried to delete the following program found below (O2 - BHO: TwaintecObj Class - {000020DD-C72E-4113-AF77-DD56626C6C42} - C:\WINDOWS\twaintec.dll), but I guess it didn't work because it's still there.

4. Index.dat Suite - I just downloaded this program.

You can install the Prevention Tools (see all the way at the bottom) to help prevent future infections.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Running Outlook 2003 SP2 on XP Pro.

I've had my Outlook.pst running in default IMO fashion on my desktop for a long time, size now up to about 1.4 GB, though I'm trying to archive most of that (see "Some emails won't archive" a few threads below). I have a new notebook and need to run Outlook on that instead for about a week while I wait for new phone and DSL service in our new office. I've installed the same version of Outlook on the notebook and then copied the Outlook.pst file over, but I'm getting unexpected behavior.

The emails are all there and the Contacts all moved over, but I've now got to go through all the customizing of the layout and, more importantly, when I click on the Address Book icon in the toolbar it says it can't display it because the Contacts folder associated with this address list couldn't be opened, it may have moved or been deleted, or I don't have permissions (which shouldn't be an issue). Then it says to go to Help for info on how to remove this folder from the Address Book.

I get the same message if I try to create a new email message and click "To" to try to get to the list. I can muddle through by just copying and pasting out of the Contacts list, no big deal, if necessary.

I realize there's more to this idea of moving the Outlook.pst file back and forth between the desktop and notebook and vice versa then meets the eye. Copying over email accounts, rules, and send/r... Read more

I need a way of previewing what's on my second monitor and having the ability to move windows to my main monitor. It happens that sometimes I use both monitors but when I move applications to the other monitor they default to it. You can see this becoming a problem when I don't use the other monitor. I'm looking into display fusion and applications like it, but I think I'm in search of something simplier, I just want a way to move an application windows to my first, when the second monitor is off, without having to turn it on.Truth can become lie, but if lies become truth we're in trouble.

Answer:Multimonitor woes...Moving applications back and forth.

Have you set the dual monitor option (right click etc. on the desktop...) to simply expand the desktop across both screens? Or is one monitors set to be a mirror (duplicate display) of the other?

My taskbar has moved to the side of the screen.I want it back along the foot of the screen but my dragging doesn't seem to be very successful. I can only drag it halfway across, as it were, but can't get it to turn downwards to where it used to be. Any suggestions, please?

Answer:Moving taskbar back to foot of screen

Try dragging diagonally until your pointer is just at the edge of where your clock would normally be (right hand corner of the screen). I've just tried it, and it seems to work OK for me.

I bought an external drive to move all my media files to and am having a hell of a time moving them!

I will try to explain my problems to the best of my ability.

When attempting to move my source material (for the projects that I am working on) I just clicked and dragged them from my c drive to my f. They where successfully moved to the f drive but then when I try to work on my projects (which im using the source material to create), the projects are empty because the source material is no longer where it used to be. I cannot relink to the new destination of the source material to save my life. Maybe this is because im using a free version of Nerovision express (6.6). I have since moved all of the source material back to its original location.

Next I tried to go into Nerovision, open my project(s) and click export to "burn" them to my f drive as video clips (or movies). Then I could open Nerovision and start a new project and laod these exported videos into the new project. But when I try and play these exported videos they are choppy (almost as if they are playing in slow motion).

So I suppose my question is this: How do I move this source material over without totaaly destroying these projects that I've been working on for the past 2 months?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been struggling with this for 3 days now and have made zero progress.

Hi,I have two backups on my laptop. I'd like to move one of them to an external drive to free up some space. I initially tried to zip this backup, this was successful, but created an additional zip copy using more space. I moved the zip copy to the external drive & tried to delete the original backup. I could not delete the original. I'd rather not delete it at all, just move it, but I can't figure out how to do this without creating a copy.TIAMitsme

The external hard drive that I have now is starting to malfunction. Is it possible to move the data on it to another external hard drive and do you need a computer to do it? The older hard drive has a capacity of 120 gb.

Answer:Moving Data from one external Harddrive to Another

Since it is external, yes you need to connect it to a computer [which in any case would be the easiest method]
If they were both internal drives, you could use a disk duplicator like this;

Hello Forum,
I have an old 500bg external hard drive. The thing works great, but over the last 3 years between my massive music collection, and photo hobby, it's almost maxed out. So I bought a 1.5 TB external hard drive...

What I plan on doing: Move the files from the old HD, to my PC (which has 1 TB of space available), then using backup software to keep those files backed up on the shiny new 1.5 TB external.

My question: how do I safely move that data from the old External HD to my PC?
In the past, when I first moved 350+ GB's from my then-PC, to the External HD, it not only took FOREVER, but I ran into some file corruption (some files didn't open, and I lost some music somehow). Now that I have close to 500 gb's, I'm scared that I'll run into trouble with just doing simple copy/paste.

Any advice? Thx in advance! :grinthumb

Answer:Moving data from 500GB external HDD to my PC

Maybe you should try Teracopy.

TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed. It verifies files were copied correctly with a checksum. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives. You can pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.Click to expand...

I haven't tried the program myself, but it's free, and if it does what it says it should be just what you're looking for.

There are also other alternative file copiers.

BTW, the speed depends on how you connect your hdd's, and how many/how big files you have. Many small files take a lot more time to copy than few big files.

So I see many many threads in here about how to move a paging file to a different drive and change its size. My question is, how do you force windows to keep those settings and not set them back to default.

For about a week now I've been trying to get my paging file to stay on my HDD instead of SSD. And no, I don't really care for "just keep it on your SSD" comments - that's not the point.

What can be causing windows to reset my paging file? It doens't just happen on a reboot, it usually happens on the next day after 2-3 reboots. After I change the settings and reboot, it appears that windows keeps them for a bit.

My TMP and TEMP environment variables keep getting reset to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP as well, and I keep changing them to E:\TEMP. And on top of all that, IE will also reset Temporary Internet Files folder.

I have only one account on my PC, so it's not due to the lack of administator priviliges either.

Answer:Windows 7 keeps moving my paging file back to C drive

Post a snipit of your pagefile options. Make sure the highligted option is unchecked. (See below)

Hello,

My wife and I both moved to Windows 10 from Windows 7, and all went well for a while but I'm now exploring the possibility of moving back to Windows 7 on my wife's system. We are well beyond the thirty day reversal period. I have an identical drive I plan to do a clean install of Win 7 on using the original Windows 7 media, and I would like use the existing Win 10 drive as a storage drive thus leaving all her work in place. As I recall, there used to be a way to do this and not have to worry about a conflict at boot by deleting the OS command files of the "soon to be" storage drive. I'm not sure if this is still possible or how to proceed with the the process with the Win 10 OS. I certainly don't want the 10 Dr. to be recognized as a bootable drive. Is setting the boot order in the BIOS the correct way to go here, or can the boot info be moved, removed or renamed while still allowing the drive to be accessed for its data?

Thank you

Answer:Exploring the possibility of moving back to Windows 7 from Win 10 upgd

If it was my computer I would backup all the data I wanted to save to a external drive. Then wipe and format the drive with W-10 and do a Clean Install of Windows 7.
Once all that is done I would partition the new Windows 7 drive and make a partition for the saved data. Then copy not move the data from the external drive to the new partition.

What you end up with is a new install of Windows 7.
A new partition with your saved data and the saved data still on the external drive for safe keeping.

I’m running Outlook Express 6 (with only one identity) on XP. A few months ago I deleted a 30MB folder of e-mails called “Work” but saved it (Work.dbx) on a thumb drive. Now I want to restore it and am having trouble. First, I just copied it back to the directory where all my message files are stored: OE ignored it. Second, I renamed Folders.dbx so that OE would create a new Folders file: OE created a new “Work” folder, which was empty. Then, following the advice of a couple of help forums, I created a dummy “Work” folder, moved a message into it, then renamed it. This didn’t work either.

Next I tried OE’s import command, the idea being to import Work.dbx from a newly created “Messages” folder on my desktop, where I had copied it. No matter how I did this, all I got was a “No messages can be found in this folder…” error message. Finally, I copied Folders.dbx into the same Messages folder along with Work.dbx. This time I was allowed to continue with the import -- but only from the OE folders currently listed on OE, which of course does not include the folder I *want* to import!

I have no reason to believe the folder is corrupt; I just can’t figure out the procedure for importing or transferring it back with the others so I can open the messages it contains. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Answer:moving iTunes library to external drive

Yes, Itunes should recognise the files as being sold to your account.

The only thing Itunes really seems to worry about is when you change systems. If you change operating systems or reformat then remember to decommission the old Itunes.

Apologies for the slightly ambiguous title, but I have combed the web trying to see if anyone else has experienced this issue.

If I have multiple windows open (say Chrome, Outlook, Word and Exchange), my mouse will randomly jump between windows, pushing active windows in behind windows I don't need at the time. I can be typing in an active screen and all the sudden another window will pop up instead. It doesn't matter if I am using the laptop keyboard and mouse, or a docking station with dual monitors and a mouse and keyboard.

I've disabled ActiveWindowTracking and still seem to have the issue.

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the problem.  From what you have described I suspect that either the video cable plugs are coming loose in its socket and needs reseating or the video cable itself is developing a break in the wiring and needs to be replaced.

On page #90 of your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual shows the video cable in question (item #4)  I have included a link to the manual below for your reference......

If you are not comfortable working inside your computer then I would recommend that you take it to a computer service center.  Since the laptop is no longer under warranty you can have it serviced locally at a place of your choosing.

After doing some research, I decided to follow the knowledge base article found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2876597 as my guide to move it back to the system drive. I have started this process and I'm part way through but I have encountered a problem that I can't figure out how to solve.

I booted into safe mode with a command prompt and deleted the symbolic link on my C drive. I followed the instructions in the article to use robocopy to copy the Users folder from my D drive to my system drive but it fails because some system files (like ntuser.dat) can't be copied (presumably because they contain the system info for the account I'm logged into so I am locked out).

I'm not really sure how to get around this and I don't think I'd be able to reboot and get into my system right now unless maybe I recreate the symbolic link from the system drive to d:\users.

Any advice or links to an article with steps I can follow would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Eric

Answer:Moving Users folder back to system drive to update to 8.1

I did the same thing. You need to boot to a Command Prompt from your Windows Install disc. This is the tutorial I used to move Users off of C: and I just reversed it to move it back, deleting the link and using robocopy as you mentioned.

I found a way to get my list of programs on to the tool/task bar. From there I dragged one of the programs to the desktop thinking it would just create a shortcut. It didn't. It took the program off the dropdown list and put it on the desktop. I can't find a way to put it back in the drop down list of programs. I realize it's not earth shattering but it is definitely a huge annoyance to me since I want to have a 'shortcut' on both the programs drop down list and on the desk top. I'm sure it's probably a very simple thing but....

thanks

Hi there, I recently received my T410 over a month ago, and everything has been smooth until now when I tried to plug it onto an external monitor (Samsung SyncMaster P2250). When dark backgrounds are present (or anything dark) horizontal lines move down the screen. This is similar to the lines seen when you videotape a old TV or something, and you can see the horizontal lines moving down.  My eyes are starting to get bothered by this, and I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem/solution for this? My NVIDIA graphics card drivers are up to date, and so is everything else. I plugged in my old Dell Inspiron 1525 using the same cable/port and that laptop does not have the same problem. The specs of my T410 are below, please let me know if any other information is necessary. Thanks! Processor Intel Core i7-620M Processor (2.66GHz 3MBL3 1066MHz)Operating system Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64Operating system Language Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64 - EnglishDisplay type 14.1" WXGA+ LED w/WW AntSystem graphics NVIDIA SG 256MB, AMTModem Yes - AMoMTotal memory 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 (2 DIMM)Keyboard US English KeyboardPointing device UltraNav with Fingerprint ReaderHard drive 320GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpmOptical device DVD Recordable, Ultrabay SlimSystem expansion slot Open SlotBattery 9 cell 2.8Ah Li-Ion Battery - Dual ModePower cord 90W AC Adapter; NA, LA, (2pin)Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

klzeng,

Can you check if the monitor refresh rate is set to 60Hz or 50Hz? You can try changing the refresh rate and see if it helps.

My boyfriend has been having quite a few problems with his computer lately, and I'd love to do a reformat (he hasn't done a clean install since he bought the computer, over three years ago).

However, he won't agree to let me do a reformat unless I can back up ALL of his saved games, so he doesn't lose anything. I'm not a gamer (at least not a computer gamer), so I have no idea on what can/cannot be done when it comes to saving games.

The games he wants to save are:

Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth
SimCity 4
SimCity 2000
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
What files do I need to make sure I transfer to his external drive, so that he doesn't lose his saved games/cities? I'd like to keep them on the external drive for him to play after the reformat, but I know that may not be possible due to lag.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Moving Games to External Hard Drive for Reformat?

First place to look would be in my documents under the name of the game. They might be stored in the installation directory so right click on the game start icon then properties then click on the find target box and check the files and folders for saved games.

When I attempt to move data (eg. a avi movie less than 1 GB) from my c: drive to my WD Elements USB External hard drive, Windows freezes. It will start to move the file and then freeze being finishing the task. Windows explorer doesn't respond and if I try to close that program in Task Manager and reboot, the computer freezes and will not reboot. I have to push the button on the front of the case to get it to restart.

I have installed the new firmware for the Intel chipset (I've already looked into the Nvidia patch) and I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti-virus.

The external hard drive is a Western Digital Elements 2 TB and is formatted in NTFS.

Thanks in advance.

I have an external USB hard drive with all my music on it. I recently moved to a new(er) computer. Now I cannot play any files. I get an errpr message: "You do not have permission to open this file." The security settings for the file give full control to "Administrators (ComputerName\Administrators)". I am logged on as Administrator. I went through the process with Windows to take ownership, but,,,, This is a stand alone local machine. When I look at the settings for the hard drive and look to add permissions, when I enter "owner" it shows a name "Ron" which is not me and has nothing to do with me. It says it is in a folder "(ComputerName)" Where is that folder with "Users, Groups, or Built-in security principals?" Any other helpful suggestions?

Hello, my external hard drive is 320gb and I have used up almost 30gb of it. I wanted to transfer an iso file of 7.7gb onto my hard drive but whenever I try to copy it, an error comes up saying not enough space to move. But there is still 290gb of free space! I recently copied around 20gb of home videos from my HDD camcorder but it doesn't copy this iso file. Please can someone assist me. Thank you very much. I am using Windows XP Home, 1gb RAM, external hard drive is in FAT32 Format.

Hey Guys / Girls,

I have a issue with my PC recognizing a hdd I have moved from a Lacie Network Space 2 external network drive to an external USB3 enclosure. The network interface component of the Lacie external enclosuer has failed and is no longer working. The hard drive is working fine so I purchased a basic external USB3 enclosuer to move it to. It doesn't pop up as plug and play due to the partitions already on the drive I suspect. I can see the drive in disk management but cant seem to mount it or copy the data to another drive.

The drive in question is Disk 1 in the above screen grab with all the partitions

Can you guys please tell me how it might be possible to access the partition with all my data on it without re-formatting the drive which seems to be the only option available...

Cheers,

Scanguy

Answer:moving a HDD from Lacie network drive to USB external nclosure

Hmm it seems the image you uploaded is not displaying. Its giving me a 404 file not found.

I would download a linix distro like Ubuntu and make a live disk or usb to boot from and attempt to explore the HDD.

Hi, I own a W510 updated with the latest lenovo drivers. The problem I have is that when I use an external monitor connected via the VGA port I see horizontal lines moving across the screen, which I can only describe as flicker. I've seen this with two 22" 16:9 monitors already - one Lenovo and one Packard Bell. With the Lenovo monitor I see that in the NVIDIA Control Center the refresh rate is set to 59 with options 60 and 75 available. With 75 the flicker is still there but not that apparent. I can't set to 60 because it automatically reverts to 59. If I however connect the same monitor via the DisplayPort to DVI connector there is no flicker and the refresh rate is set to 60. With a third Lenovo screen, which is I think 15 inch 4:3 I don't see any flicker. Do I have a defective VGA port? Is this a driver issue? Should I contact support?

Hi all,
Problem:
Desktop Icons move back to the left (default) side of the screen after customizing. this happens when the the computer is put into sleep mode and is woken up or when the monitor is turned off and turned back on. I upgraded to windows 10 Pro 64bit from windows 7 ultimate 64bit. This problem never happened with windows 7.
-Automatic Sleep mode is turned off - when I manually put computer to sleep mode and wake it up the icons are rearranged

-Automatic turn off monitor has been deactivated - when shut off my monitor but keep my computer on and then turn back on the monitor the icons have rearranged

-I have small icons setting

-Auto align icons has been deactivated

-allow themes to change icons has also been deactivated
My Computer:
LG 34UM65 - 21x9 - 2560x1080p resolution
AMD 9590
Asus Crosshair V Formula Z
Gigabyte HD7970ghz
Corsair Platinum Ram
WD HDD
Samsung 850Pro - Windows 10 is installed on the SSD
My Drivers are all up to date. and Motherboard Bios has just been updated to 2201

Answer:Desktop Icons Moving After Computer Wakes or Monitor is Turned Back on

I started seeing this occasionally too. Not sure of a solution.

I tried the right click on the desktop, view, and unchecked Align Icons to Grid. So far, after a sleep and a restart, icons remain where I left them.

Seems simple yet mind boggling. I left click on any top window frame of any open application and drag in order to reposition the window on the desktop. The problem is that after repositioning the window when I release the left mouse, the window may OR may not snap back to it's original position, ignoring where I've moved it.

Any ideas?

At all times, the windows are within the desktop visible boundary.
