WIN7 login screen just has (Other User) available and I can't login?

Question: WIN7 login screen just has (Other User) available and I can't login?

Ok this morning I started up my computer and at the login screen the only option I had available to use to login was (Other User)? I normally have (my login) and (guest login). I'm using WIN7 64BIT it's a custom built computer I put together in 2011. I'm using three HD, OS 256GB SSD, FLTSIM 256 SSD, Storage 1TB. I last used the computer last night around 7:30pm and I had no issues. I've restarted three times but to no avial. Is there a fix for this??

Preferred Solution: WIN7 login screen just has (Other User) available and I can't login?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: WIN7 login screen just has (Other User) available and I can't login?

Hello bankheadd, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you had this issue to hopefully undo and fix it.

Hello nice people !

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.

Here's what happened:

I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.

I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (?), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.

Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).

I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:

1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name

So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

If anyone has an idea, that would be greatly approciated.

Answer:Changing the local user login name on the login screen

Hello Bob, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check in Netplwiz to do step 4 to set Windows to automatically sign in to your user account at startup. If you had this set before, then it may not have been updated after you removed your password, and needs to be setup again.

Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup

My computer has been acting weirdly and crashing randomly for a couple of months now, but starting yesterday, it just started crashing and presenting BSOD's left and right. For a moment I thought it was due to Chrome, which has always tended to hang or crash (either itself or Windows in its entirety). But today, after logging in, the welcome screen and the subsequent black screen with a cursor took 5-10 time as long as it normally does, and now I can't log in without a BSOD and automatic restart. I did try to update Java to Version 31. I'm not sure how smoothly the installation went -- Chrome crashed sometime during or after the installation -- but I uninstalled Java from Add/Remove Programs. No new hardware, no new software besides Java and PRTG Traffic Grapher (both uninstalled), no new Windows Updates installed. The computer is a notebook, HP Pavilion dm4-1060us, all hardware OEM. Basic System Info: Windows 7 SP1, x64 Originally installed OS, OEM System about 1.5 years old Have never re-installed the OS CPU: Intel Core i5 M430 @ 2.27GHZ GPU: Intel HD Graphics Requested files are attached. I was unable to generate a perfmon /report file ("The system cannot find the file specified."). Note, though, that I ran the programs and am writing this from Safe Mode with Networking. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Hi Guys,
I've recently got an issue with loading profile settings after probably deleting one of the Admin profiles on Windows 10 Home.

I can't load:
1. The most important: Built-in Adminstrator profile: Error: " Location/Path C:/Windows/sytem32/config/systemprofile/Desktop" is unavailable. I got only empty black screen, bottom-left-hand corner windows icon doesn't show up the menu - is irresponsive. I can't do anything - eveng craetimng new folders. Only Some software work , namely BitDefender Total Security, NVidia, Intel etc

2. Fortunetely, I'ev got another Admin account which works fine. I can create new users/profiles but I get this error anytime I enter the user's profile:" a User log in failed. User's profile files cannot be loaded.

I've found the path in regestry:
It confirms that only one with thwe right path to my profile works fine. Others don't have a correct path.

See the print screen below:

I hope I won't have to format disc and totally reinstall Windows. Thank you for you help.

I have a problem, I get to the Windows login that says to sign in but on the right there is not a user name it is just blank. Can anyone tell me what to do. This does this in Safe mode as well. I click ctrl. alt. del and a user login box comes up but still will not take password. This is a Windows XP Home SP2. Very strange. Thanks....

Answer:Can't login Windows XP Home Login page missing user names

This happened to me one time, I think it's a corrupt profile. I really don't remember how I solved it.

Do you use XP's System Restore? That would be my first idea.

Best suggestion that I can think of is to run chkdsk /r or the equivalent and see if that helps.

My client used their computer on 11/9 and upon returning to office 3 days later (computer had been left on, I think), the ususal username login took them to a brand new desktop with no files in the user folders. It's as if a new user had been created without their knowledge.

I am remotely accessing their machine to solve the issue and am stumped. Trying to do research and as much solving as possible remotely before actually going to client's home to fix things.

I see 3 folders under Users folder, BEARMAIN-PC is the network name for their computer, Bear is the username:
TEMP.BEARMAIN-PC modified date 11/12/15bear.BEARMAIN-PC modified date 10/26/15bear modified date 10/13/15

It appears that upon windows login to the only defined user called "Bear" on login screen, I am using the TEMP.client-PC folder of user files.

"bear.BEARMAIN-PC" has the most recently worked on files, with most recent edit date of 11/9/15, and the
"bear" folders have dates of 10/26/15.

I have no idea what happened here in clients absence (left town on 10th), the only thing that might've been running is Carbonite backups to a locally attached external drive, Dropbox, and my remote access program. In effect, I have a duplicate of everything on hard drive filling it up to all but 5GB, though the "bear.BEARMAIN-PC" is a larger size and more current file dates so I'll assume that's the one I want to keep.

This temp login does not hav... Read more

Trying to save a trip to the dump, I did a factory reset on an old laptop which my kids had used for 4years, and so had seen better days.
All went fine until I tried to log back into windows using the new user password. The new password was rejected even though I still get a password 'hint' telling me it's correct.
Safe mode and 'repair' mode do nothing but return me to the login screen.
Has anyone else had this problem, or know a way round it?
I've used up my few remaining brain cells on this, so any ideas welcome.
I've installed Linux 17.1 on same laptop, no problems with that

Hi, this is the 2nd time it happened. When I turn laptop on, win7 asks me to enter my user account password, but the desktop that loads is not mine. Many icons and files are gone.

The 1st time it happened I thought it was a virus and after unable to find answers online, I restored my laptop from a system image.

This 2nd time, I was able to find forums and went to c:\users to find my profile, and I see all my icons and files. This is how I know it's a different user profile that is loading and my files are still intact.

However I am unable to find answers as to how to fix it so that the correct desktop layout loads.

I am running on Win7 Enterprise. Thanks!

Answer:"Preparing Your Desktop" after Win7 login / User Profile Issue

Have you looked in Control Panel/User Accounts to make sure the account is still there? This is the only thing I know to suggest.

Friend of family had a stroke, can't remember user password. It happens. I'm an old ex network admin, so pretty savy here yet Totally stumped, short of spending money to buy something. Here is what I've tried to do to get to the command prompt, so I can run net user to enable the administrator login, which is defaulted as disabled on 7. Of course she never made up any backup image disks or anything, duh.......who does?

1. On boot up, pressed F8 to get to command prompt with safe mode. That works, when selected option given here, still boots up to the user name login. So I can't get to the command prompt. Tried the other safe mode options, with same result. Toshiba also has a F12 boot option, same result.

2. Started windows, when it was loading, I shut it down with Power On button, restarted, repair mode to get to command prompt, cancelling the repair when it starts, but can't get to command prompt this way either.

3. Tried my Windows 7 disk, but still loads and comes up to user login, so I can't enable the administrator option.

4. I think she has this locked down pretty good, nothing in the BIOS to secure the user access.

I have a bootable Flash drive, but it will not work on this Toshiba Satelite laptop, will not boot as there is no option in BIOS to enable it. I tried with a bootable CD disk, and it boots up, but I still go to the user login like above.

Would like to help her out, I doubt she'll be working again, and is only in her late 50's. Doing t... Read more

My User accounts have all been disabled except one that has my avatar, but isn't the admin account ive been using. it has a different mouse speed for one, and the password isn't the one i've been using for months.

Guest is disabled.

I have tried every password cracker. None of them can figure out the password for said 'unknown' admin account, and some of them like hiren's don't even boot, even though my boot order is CD then WIN.

I even DLed my version of Windows Install AND system restore discs, burnt the iso's correctly, and neither of them will actually boot. My laptop came with no disc and has the internal system restore thing which is why i had to DL them on a different computer.

I need to figure out how to get a cmd prompt before login so i can use "net user administrator /active:yes" or even for the guest account. I know the install/repair discs give c prompt options, but i can't get either of them to boot. and yes i have the boot order so it boots from cd before booting windows.

any help?

Hello friends, I recently got the Gnome desktop environment on the Ubuntu Software Center, and I used the gdm and startx command as said by another forum site. Nothing wrong, they said to logout, tried to login again, goes to a black screen and sends me back to the Ubuntu login screen. Tried again, same result, panicked. Looked up video tutorial on how to fix it, they said to access the control panel via ctrl-alt-f1 or f2, went to a black screen, no text at all, computer runs fine, no crashing. Is there a special way to access the terminal in a System76 computer, I really don't know very confusing? Is there a way to login with the guest session? I use Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf on my laptop. What causes this, I read on Ubuntu forums it's driver issues with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I have my suspections with the Gnome desktop environment.

I have a Dell laptop that I have tried many times to password but it sort of doesn't work.

The laptop has Windows XP Professional on it, Version 2002 with Service pack 2.

My husband bought it from a buddy at work who's wife wanted a laptop, but then decided she didn't like it. She didn't delete her account so it's still under her name.

I have set up a user account in my name on it and passworded it. When I reboot the laptop, it goes straight into "her" account. I want the screen where it gives me the User names so you have to type my password in order to even access the laptop. It always totally bypasses that screen.

I tried setting up a dummy account and turned on the Guest account and rebooted the laptop. I STILL don't get the User login screen.

I really want this to work because for 1. the laptop is being used only for backing up personal family pictures and I'd really rather be able to password my children out of it and 2. when I go to my girlfriends' house, her mother seems to think she can just help herself to my laptop whenever she feels like it. I'd logged off - it's the only way to get the User login screen - but somehow she managed to bypass it. I KNOW the only way around it is to reboot the laptop, but she swears up and down she just opened the lid and the account was open.

Can someone help me figure out how to get the User login screen on Startup? Please?

Thanks!!

You can change the logon background image if you wanted to do that instead.

hi, i have this problem which probably is related to the power manager. Only when i activate the function to start charging the battery after a predetermined percentage, i turn on the laptop and the windows login screen becomes very bright to the point you see mostly white with some blue of the windows login background on the corners of the screen. Also, sometimes i'm using the computer with ac power plugged in and it acts randomly as if i had disconnected the power... lowering the screen brightness for some seconds and then going back to normal... Today, i experienced a sudden shutdown which i wondered could be related to this... can anyone help with this? edit: just saw the threads with the same problem put in other words... but there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution... the question that i still have is are all of these problems caused by power manager?

Hi all

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed and am having a problem with the machine going to the login screen when the machines is idle for a while. I don't have to set to do that. Sleep and hibernate are both set to Never, and there is no screen saver in use at this time. It is very annoying to have to keep logging back in after the machine has been idle for only a short time. And no matter what I set where is still does it.

Any suggestions on what I need to set to prevent it from doing this would be very much appreciated.

Nothing happens when I try to start explorer.exe.   Looks to me like there is no "desktop" running.  Starting in safe mode changes nothing.  Thanks for your help---

hi guys,

I've encountered the issue more than once in the forums but did not come accross an other solution then "do a clean install".

I just received my new Sony Vaio (C-series) with Win 7 Pro x 64 yesterday. Everything worked out of the box.
Today, I did the following :
# remove McAffee
# remove MS Office Starter
# remove Win Life (everything but the media player)

# installed Bullguard Internet Security
# installed FireFox (latest)
# installed Winamp
# installed LibreOffice
# installed PDF-creator

Then, the laptop asked for a reboot... Which I did... And since then... Nothing.
I get to the welcome screen with "Windows 7 Professional" written at the bottom but the login screen/prompt with user picture does not appear (I have waited for more than 30 minutes).

Same thing in Safe Mode... And System Recovery did not notice any issues...

So, do you guys have any idea where this might come from ?
I don't mind doing a clean install... But I'd like to understand what went wrong and where so that I can prevent it in the future...

Thanks in advance for your suggestions !

Odd issue, been playing with computers since the 90s and never seen this happen. All of a sudden like my keyboard and sometimes my mouse are unresponsive at the windows 7 login screen. Sometimes the mouse works, sometimes it doesnt. If it doesnt work initially on power up it has worked every time so far after a reboot. Keyboard works just fine in the bios and just fine in windows after i use the onscreen keyboard to log in if the mouse is working but no response on the login screen. Capslock/numluck and any other button that should activate or change lights on the keyboard have zero effect when the keyboard is unresponsive.

Anyone ever seen anything like this? Ive just recently formatted/reinstalled a couple times without issue. Have been playing around with some virtual machine and vpn programs. Using avast antivirus this time around, used avg before, nothing else should really be different. Ive formatted hundreds of times and never seen this, pretty sure hardware is not the cause as it works fine before/after login screen. No strange new software that I can think of other than a vpn software program which ive only used in a virtual machine environment. Unless I somehow got a virus or malware that avast and malwarebytes cant detect Im kinda stumped, cant seem to figure this one out on my own, any thoughts? I spose the easy answer is just format again but I hate having a problem I cant solve.

I should mention i did try uninstalling avast as would be the first obvious step ... Read more

Alright, I don't know a lot about computers. I probably definitely shouldn't own one seeing as our last one crashed because I accepted an IM from a friend that they didn't actually send...

Anyway, my problem now on a diff. computer is that I cannot login.

I've searched the web countless times for an answer to this and other people that have had this problem always say the screen is stuck on the welcome page where it says 'click on user name'

Mine however doesn't even say that. It just has the Windows Icon that says Windows xp in the middle of the blue screen.

I think what caused this is that I got the virus 'XP Antispyware 2009' and when I went on forums like these to find solutions I went into regedit and might have deleted some stuff I shouldn't have. Then I couldn't open IE, everytime I clicked on the desktop icon it gave me a shortcut icon instead.

Eventually I shut it down and when I turn it back on there is no option for logging in. I tried rebooting in Safe Mode and I tried rebooting to when it was last running properly or whatever that option is - both don't work.

To make matters worse I can't find the XP Windows CD.

Is there any hope for me at all? Please and thank you. :/

Hi All,

I logged into a computer as an administrator to install an application client, citrix client, on a users computer. The installation went successfully and worked fine on the administrator account, however, when the user try to login in to the computer the computer goes black screen after welcome message and stay black until it gets shutdown manually. Nothing works in this state of black screen, ctrl+alt+del etc doesn't work, although the mouse cursor is visible and movable - thats it.

2. The user has administrator privilieges.
3. The user can login in safe mode, but a restore to a previous restore point didn't work.
4. sfc /scannow completes without any errors.
5. Windows update doesn't work in users safe mode with network. Shouldn't it supposed to be working?
6. Tried Prevx fix for black screen / explorer not running.
7. User is on company AD domain so i need the user account to be working again.
8. Disabling all startup programs doesn't help.
9. Administrator account works fine with normal login / drivers loaded etc.

Any suggestions on how to either fix the problem or get the user account to work again?

Thank you!

Nicolai

Answer:User get black screen when trying to login

Hello Nicolai, welcome to SF!

A question, as I don't know how you AD is setup...
Would it be possible for you to save the users local data if any, and completely re-create that user on the pc?
That might be easier than finding a UAC / AD authorization issue

I've been running Windows XP (SP3) for years. Went back to school, and I'm taking Japanese. When I installed/activated the Japanese fonts, it asked me to restart the computer. I did so, and now, where previously I would go directly to the desktop, I am taken to the User Login screen. When I click on my name, it moves for a moment, and says that it's loading my preferences. Then, the icon snaps back to its original spot, and does nothing. If I click it again, the exact same thing happens.

If I try to login in safe mode, it does the same thing, except I also get the administrator login icon. Anyone have any idea why this is doing this and/or if there's anything I can do short of reinstalling that will help? In looking around the internet, I have found two instances where someone has had this same problem, but no luck on solutions.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Stuck at User Login screen

When you log into the administrator account, does the same thing happen?

Also, do you have any of the following:

I have my user account which is connected with ms account which shows my email along with my user name on login screen. I made one more admin account without ms account and made it a default user with password. Now on login screen on left side both my accounts show up. Is there way to hide my original account from this login screen because I do not want anyone sitting with me could know my email as this account shows my email along with user name.

Answer:Hide other user name from login screen

Hello Sam,

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to set Windows to not display user names on the sign in screen. This will force all users to have to enter both their user name and password at sign in.

Hi all,

I have a very weird situation going on on my login screen: basically, the username appears twice and, if I click on the second 'username', I get a different login screen but it logs into the same account anyway?
I have taken a couple of screenshots, as they better describe my issue.

Can anyone shed some light here?

Thank you very much!

At the login screen there administrator and user1 . I want only user1 to appear. And when i want to log into administrator i would click switch and the administrator login would appear. Is this possible or does administrator is always display. And no i don't want to delete the administrator account. Thanks.

Answer:Displaying only 1 user at the login screen.

There is a method in the group policy editor to revert the logon to the old system whereby you have to press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the log in box but I am unaware of an option to hide a user

Hey sorry if i posted this in the wrong section but this one looked like the right one. Recently i had a trojan that totaly screwed up my computer, it would play sound clips at random moments and everytime i googled something it would take me to phishing sites. So i downloaded trojan remover and ran that, it got rid of something for me but it stopped, and asked me what to do to userinit.exe. It said that file is suspecous, so i choose it recommended advice and just renamed it. The trojan didnt go away so i ran it again in safe mode, and this time with trojan remover i clicked delete. I then realized it was a system32 file, and now i cant log in, it takes me to the user select screen, i pick any user and then he screen goes black and a window pops up saying an unathorized change has been made to windows, learn more online or close. So now i dont know what to do.

P.S. Now it doesnt let me go to safe mode, i dont have that option anymore

What i tried so far:
Put in vista cd, boot from optical drive, and tried to run system restore and i keep on getting catastrphical errortried scanning the file in the command promptNow im downloading ubuntu and gonna boot from that disk, and while im in ubuntu im gonna try to copy the userinit.exe file from my fash he hard drive. Thats my last attempt.

So basicly i am asking how to resolve my issue with the not being allowed to log in. I really would not like to reinstall vista but it looks like a possibility now.

My daughter has a Toshiba Microsoft windows 7. She tried creating a guest user login in, when she tried to toggle between the admin log in and the guest all it would show is the guest. She went in and disabled the guest login now she does not have either option. How do I fix this?

Answer:disappearing user login screen

Sounds like she disabled the Admin account.

You might try and boot into the safe mode, and see if you can get into the Control Panel and re enable the accounts.

Windows 7 has a "Guest" account, but a account can not be made to be a guest. The only type that there is, is Administrator and Standard.

The system spec would be helpful.

Hi ! Did you create a system repair CD or a system recovery drive?? Here are the ways that you can recover. My first choice would be to restore to a time before the update with a restore point! Read this by HTG! How to Create and Use a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc in Windows 8 or 10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...covery-options
PS! Using a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc
A recovery drive will normally not be necessary. If your computer fails to boot several times, Windows 8 or 10 will automatically bring up the advanced startup options, which allows you to troubleshoot and fix it.
If Windows can?t even bring up these tools, you?ll need the recovery drive, system repair disc, or a Windows 8 or 10 installation disc. Insert the recovery media into your computer and restart. Your computer should boot from the recovery media automatically. (If it doesn?t, you may need to change its boot order.)

I have a X61t running Vista Business and sometimes want to log in while set as a slate.   I realized after a while that I have *never* made that work. I experimented more carefully watching my stylus taps and saw that the keyboard is not sending the right codes - or something like that - so I always get the message "Password incorrect". My password is nothing super elaborate or long. There is one numeral and the first character is shifted. Nothing in what I used to thjink of as high ASCII in the old days. As far as I know the tablet keyboard works fine in other apps. I have used it to fill in a form or two. Anyone have any thoughts? Jonathan

Hi, I just discovered a problem with vista. I recently installed an outstanding software known as TuneUp Utilities 2009, I then used it to customize my computer login screen, I made a modification such that on startup or when no one is logged (i.e. when the login screen is displayed), in case there has been no activity for 10 minutes, vista's built in bubble screensaver begins to run. Unfortunately, when I tested this modification out, I noticed a screensaver error stating that "direct3d 9.0 is required to run this screensaver and can't be found on your computer", so I logged in and tried running the screensaver again and it worked perfectly.
Why is it not working on the login screen but it works on the desktop screen? How do I confirm the version of direct x I have installed, because I recently made an update on my direct x, I tried updating it to 10.XXX and the same problem is still occurring. Please reply asap.

Answer:login error, screensaver can't run on login screen, Direct X 9.0 not recognized

Click the link in my signature and under STEP 2 download and install everything there, that should solve your problems.

Hi, I'm using a Dell Inspiron 15 with Windows 8 and was having an issue where videos were not playing and restarted my computer, left the room for a minute and came back to see it was updating. When the update completed I was able to log on, but there was only a black screen with a cursor. I tried restarting my computer and had the same result, and followed the first bit of advice in this thread (here) as the issue described was the same, and successfully opened the task manager to have the system boot in safe mode. However, when I restarted my computer it did not progress past the boot screen where I was greeted with nothing but a black screen. This has happened every time I have restarted and I am unable to access safe mode or log on normally, although I can reach the Advanced Startup Options screen.
Is there any way to fix this issue?

Ok, here's the background. My wife's pc (identical to my own, and running on Windows XP)was restarting at shutdown recently on it's own and I saw an error that said there was some kind of driver error. So, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers in hopes of installing the most recent ones. I don't know if this was the issue, but I was troubleshooting and I noticed that there was a recent driver update.

Well now I can't log on at all, because when I get to the windows login screen, the mouse and keyboard won't work. I see for an instance the cursor shows an hourglass, then nothing. I see the blinking cursor in the login field, but I can't type anything in there, and the mouse doesn't work.

So, I tried to do a system restore but it just sent me to the login screen, and no mouse or keyboard function persisted. When I tried to go into safe mode, it asked me what was the boot device I wanted to use (which after some searching I see is also an indicator of a problem, but I'm not sure what it means). I picked my HD and continued to do a restore to the last working config, and the same deal, can't login, no mouse or keyboard use at that sceen.

So, I tried going into safe and it shows both an administrator icon and my wife's user name, and I can't try either because again, the moust and keyboard aren't working here either!

I tried to boot with the windows xp disc in, even picked the boot source from the boot menu as floppy and again as the cd-rom. I read that doing so can sometim... Read more

This has never happened before. When I turn on the computer, the two accounts show up (both administrator) but whenever I click either of them, the screen just shows the Windows 7 login screen for a while without any text then sends me back to the account selection. This happens when I select either of the accounts, one of them also has a password but that doesn't show up either.

First, my computer is a Gateway desktop with Windows 7 Home

I was just doing the regular old stuff, playing a game when all of a sudden an error window popped up (didn't have a chance to read it) and windows crashed and rebooted.

Now when I start Windows, and attempt to log in to ANY username a blue screen will flash for a second and will reboot. It is too fast to see much of the blue screen, but I saw something about iastor.sys being the problem.

I thought it wouldnt be so hard to fix, if I could restore some stuff, but I can't seem to do anything.

I tried Safemode, but Windows similarily crashes when I login.

I tried Gateway Recovery Disks, (the Restore OS only option) and it said I didn't have enough space? I have 40GB free. Is that really not enough?

I haven't tried the formatting option of Gateway Recovery, deleting all my files is a last resort.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

The computer has a admin and a normal user account.

On start up the user automatically logs in.
If go to the start menu or press ctrl alt del I'll get an option to switch user, however when I get to the login screen there is no option for anything other then administrator.

The registry is set so that fast user switching is enabled. As well the local group policy editor logon option is set so that "hide entry points for fast user switching" is disabled.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have two user accounts on my PC - Staff and Administrator. I loaded Win7 a few days ago and created the Staff account. Earlier today, I changed the Staff account from an Administrator to a Standard account. I was logged on as Staff when I did it. I then logged off and back on and when I did, only the Administrator account was on the login screen.

The Staff account still exists under Local Users and Groups. I disabled it, restarted and then reenabled it but no change. I don't think that it had a password when I deleted it - I don't add the password until I am done with the machine to make it easier - so many reboots.

The PC has Win7 Pro x86 and is on a workgroup. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm using Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2. I do not have windows backup/recovery enabled, so I unfortunately can not just restore a previous backup.

I am able to login as Safe Mode so I'd guess it's not a hardware issue.

My computer worked fine last night, i did not instal any new software/updates yesterday and I shut down my computer normally, then this issue came up when I turned my computer on this morning. My computer boots up fine until it gets to the Windows screen to choose which user to login as. Once I choose one it crashes within 1-2 seconds after I type my password and hit enter. It just says "Loading user data..." or whatever then crash.

At this point it was previously rebooting, but I logged in as Safe Mode and disabled the "reboot on crash" thing so that I get a blue screen instead. My blue screen says the usual stuff about "a problem was detected... blah blah" then:

"Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xF82B55D5, 0xF820D788, 0x0000000)

*** Ntfs.sys - Address F82B55D5 base at F82B5000, DateStamp 4198e35b

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete."

One note about this blue screen, in the line "*** STOP: ..." the number 0xF820D788 is different everytime it crashes, otherwise the entry is the same

Answer:Blue Screen immediately after user login

I can't find how to edit my post so...

Update: I did get it to boot in non-Safe Mode by first going into Safe Mode and loading msconfig.exe, and under the General tab unchecking every box.

I tried first by unchecking Process SYSTEM.INI File, Process WIN.INI File and Load Startup Items but leaving Load System Services checked and it was still crashing.

So something in the System Services is crashing on login :-/

Hi 7forum!

This is my last resort, so please help me!
I have after a long time searching ended up here on this forum.

What I want to do is simply to remove the picture & frame on my login screen, only the password, my name, switch user should be left on the screen.

To clarify, I don't want to:
Remove the whole login screen.
Remove password protection.
Remove anything else except for that picture and frame.

Thats pretty much it, I would be really thankful if somebody could help me with this because I'm close to changing to linux just to get rid of it .

Thanks in advance!

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP. This weekend Avast warned me I had trojans so it wanted to run boot scan. I let it run and it said it found a few things which I told it to delete. I have changed my login screen background picture using Windows 10 Login Screen Changer (available at the MyDigitalLife forums). Unfortunately, the option to Disable User Account picture won't work for me, so I had to delete all the copies of my account pic in the 'UserAccountPictures' folder, so that my login background image doesn't show my account pic.
This also removes the account pic from the top of my Start menu, my User Account Profile, and online at all Microsoft sites.

There MUST be a way to enable an account picture everywhere EXCEPT on the login screen ...? I'm not adverse to editing the registry, or changing system files, if need be. I've been a computer enthusiast since the mid '80s, and I want my OS to do what I want it to do, not what the 'mighty' Microsoft deems to be the options I should be allowed to tinker with.

Any ideas?

For windows 10 when you boot in to Windows Recovery OS under the advanced options it list all the user and allow you to choose a user and then password.
Does anyone know what COM interface or Win API OR WMI way Win RE uses for validating user credentials?

I used netapi32.dll _NetLocalGroupGetMembers_ method to get the list of members in Administrator Group on local system and then
advapi32.dll _LogonUser_ method to login. It works well on the main OS (windows 10) but when I boot in Windows RE then it list different set of users. How do I access users from main OS?

Answer:How to remove user picture from login screen, but keep it elsewhere?

This no longer works in the later Insider Preview builds. If you have found a way I would like to know how you did it. I am currently using build 14388. I hate any picture on my login screen. MS has moved it elsewhere and has now made the account picture transparent.

Hi Everyone!

I noticed that I have an additional account shown at my login screen. It's not a user account I created, and it doesn't show up under Control Panel>User Accounts. The only thing that shows up in the User Accounts page is my user account (shown as admin), and a guest account (shown as off).

I'm wondering if I should be worried about this second user account shown at the login screen, or if there was a way to remove/hide this 2nd user account from showing up at the login screen? I'm not sure how it came/shown up in the first place. I'm hoping someone can explain this issue to me and/or help! Thanks!

Answer:2nd user account at login screen, Should I be worried?

Your forum system specs indicate that you use Avast for your antivirus app. However, did you ever use ESET? If so, then please see this post. If not, then use Windows (file) Explorer to see is there is a user folder (C;\Users\username) for this additional account. If there is a user profile folder for this additional account, then the date on that folder and its sub-folders might give you a clue about how long the user account has been active.

Hi, My uncle cannot log into Windows because somehow the user account names are gone from the Windows XP login screen. I mean I can't do a system restore without logging into Windows can I? I tried booting with the Windows XP installation cd. I got to a point where I thought I was about to reinstall windows but I wasn't sure so I stopped. I would rather not reinstall Windows for him if there is a way to get back onto the Windows desktop. Someone let me know what I should try. Thanks.

Hello Ngzek,

If you only see "Other user" on the sign in screen and have to enter both user name and password, then it sounds like you have may have enabled the Interactive logon: Do not display last user name security policy. Disabling will sort this for you if so.

I'm a Mac user and just got a laptop with XP from work. The XP setup asked me to supply a password as the Admin, which I did. Things well for a couple of days. Now when I come to the login (after restart) the dialog box says that it cannot recognize my password and to reenter in the Admin account window. Every time I attempt this I get a very LOUD BEEP - each time I click. I cannot enter anything into the password entry field and cannot select "Turn off computer" in the left bottom corner.

Can anyone help please????

Thanks!

Was this computer part of a network domain at work? If so, you'll have to contact the network administrator to either reset or remove the password, which may have expired.

Hey Folks,
I have a Windows XP Professional SP2 running on my desktop PC. The problem is sometimes when i start my PC the screen at which we choose our Windows User account freezes. The pointer is moving fine but the accounts cannot be accessed. The icon in the lower left corner used for restarting or shutting down the PC doesn't work. Besides this sometimes the screen freezes at "Windows is loading....." screen. Sometimes it just shows a black screen with the pointer in the middle. All i can do about this is press the restart button. There is no specific pattern about this. It happens randomly.

I have tried running the "chkdsk" utility from the cmd, but that doesn't seem to help. I have a Quickheal Total Security antivirus running on my PC. I have performed a full system scan, but nothing has changed. I tried scanning using the Spybot Search and Destroy but it does not open.

I hope you guys can help me with this. Cheers!

hi,
im am having problems getting my DELL desktop to work.
a few days back it started freezing.
Now when we turn it on it dosnt start up at all, the green power light turns on in the tower but nothing happens on the moniter screen.

we called DELL and the technician said it was a problem with the graphics card, we bought a new one and it starts up fine but only gets to a black screen before the user accounts log in page.
(this is after the option of, resume windows normally, or, start with safe mode....goes to a black screen with either of them)

Phoning back DELL with the problem their now telling me its not a hardware but a software problem.
does this sound familiar with anyone ??

Alright, so this is somewhat of a trivial problem, but things like this just bug me. It bugs me even more that i cant figure out what to do.

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/6...titled9mm1.jpg

When ever i log on, it says i have all these unread messeges, but im pretty sure its from one of my friends checking his email/getting on MSN messenger on my computer, since none of my emails have that many messeges, and when i sent myself an email, the total count went from 3087 to 3088, then i deleted that messege and it went back to 3087. Now i know this is related to MSN Messenger 7.5 since it has the email checking feature. Normally, there might be 1 or 2 unread messeges from my inbox, but they'll go away after i have read them. So im wondering if i get my friend to log onto his email and delete everything, will it go away? Would he have to do it on my computer or could he do it on his?

It just really bugs me that i see all those messeges there whenever i go to logon. So thank you for any help.

Answer:Xp Login/User Select Screen + MSN Messenger.

Hi there....

It would probably be easier in the long run to disable the feature. To do this please follow these instructions:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
regedit
- Click OK
- Locate and right click the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
- Select to create a new DWORD value and name it:
MessageExpiryDays
- Give it a value of 0
- If you expand the UnreadMail key, you will see the email accounts your PC is used to connect to. Highlighting them will reveal the account the 'unread mails' are attached to by reading the 'MessageCount' value...you can simply double click it and make it 0 if required
- Close regedit
- Reboot, problem should now be gone.

Let me know if that helps or not :-)

OK, this has just recently started happening to my computer. Basically, after my computer goes on stand by, I get the user login screen thing where I have to click on the user profile. I am running XP and this has never happened before. I'm also the only user so it's quite annoying. Sometimes I have to wait for my LCD to refresh for like 30 seconds. Pretty insane. I have no spyware whatsoever on my PC. In fact, this only started happening after I installed the beta for Microsoft Antispyware. Ironic, eh? I had Lavasoft's Adaware installed as well...just wanted to compare which was better. I also have Norton Antivirus and Firewall installed.

Anyways, I uninstalled MS Antispyware thinking that was the culprit. Still, no go. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Win 10 x64 1703 Build 15063.413 - Screen Image pre Login there too long before login box.

I am not sure whether this started with the 1703 update but it seem like it did around that time anyway.

When I cold boot I get to the image with the large date etc.

When I click I used to get the login box but now no matter how much I click the mouse, or the keyboard, once the date goes up and out, I am stuck with the image.

It takes sometimes 5-10 mins before I finally get the login box.

How can I fix this please?

I have a vexing problem since the Anniversary update on my Vaio. I have been using Windows 10 on this machine successfully for over a year. Here are the exact symptoms:

I boot up the laptop from a cold state. The boot appears normal and my personal background appears on the welcome screen with the current time and date. Normally, I would just need to click anywhere on this screen to receive my personal photo and a login prompt. Up to this point, by the way, I have not heard the Windows dah-dah-di-dah-hmmmm sound. When I click on the welcome screen, the background stays, but seems to zoom in slightly. No personal picture appears, no login prompt appears. The only icons are the WiFi icon and the accommodations icon for visually impaired. Both of these icons function normally, but nothing else does, not ctrl-alt-delete. Not the enter key. Nothing.Eventually, after about a minute, the welcome screen with the date and time returns, but clicking produces the same result as before.I am forced to hold down the power key until the computer shuts down and then press it again to boot.At this point, the process usually proceeds normally (with the dah-dah-di-dah-hmmmm sound) and the login screen with my (circular) photo appears and the login proceeds normally.Other strangeness: I am unable to verify my identity on the computer because clicking on Verify produces a Windows security error: We couldn't sign you in."I tried resetting the Windows explorer advanced internet options, and it ... Hi, I'm new here. I created this account for help because my mother's password seems changed and she couldn't login, the keyboard wasn't sticky so she didn't mistype, caps lock wasn't on. I typed it my self and it didn't work, restarted the computer and it didn't work neither. I then go to thinking it was hacked and the password was simply changed. I go looking around for password changing boots for my flashdrive. I burned PASSCAPE on to my 16gig 2-1 flashdrive. Tried booting on all settings, booted normally, didn't work. So, I ignored it for a while and kept clicking "Reset password" button, It showed up as "Passcape" but claimed the usb slot was empy, wasn't; the slot is "F". I gave up hope on it, so I found this youtube video to reset it the manual labor way-here's the link to it: " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLtJ-iDdWC0 " So, continuing on..

I was simply following the video's instructions, so at step one at duration "2:02" I have to cause a error, I just keep shutting-down the pc while it's booting, because windows will assume it's an error after 2 - 3 times of doing so. Okay, by the time I get to "Repair your computer" button I press enter. And the shocking surprise I get which is odd is this in quotes:

Yesterday updated from Win7Pro to Win10Pro my old Lenovo Thinkpad x220.
The laptop does have the original 320GB HDD and a mSATA 240GB SSD, the latest used as main disk now with Windows 10. For security reasons I never deleted the older Win7 installation in the HDD.
At the end I was presented with a black screen and the Lenovo Center opened. All the tests was passed.
I closed it and no desktop was available.

A few reboot and the situation is I can login but after that no desktop is shown, only a white small rectangle saying "Personalized settings. (Not responding)". Trying to do anything I'm told Windows Explorer is not responding. The task manager shown only an app is running.
Any suggestions how to proceed is welcomed, I can now boot on the older HDD but I miss many programs and of course it's not what I want.
