How can I recover data from HDD now showing as Unallocated?

Question: How can I recover data from HDD now showing as Unallocated?

Hi,

I'm trying to recover the data (including some treasured family photos) from a Western Digital 320GB HDD that died in my sister's desktop HP PC using my Windows 7 work Dell laptop. I can only see the disk using Disk Management, where it shows as unallocated.

The drive itself failed (was making horrible clicking noises) and I have since replaced the board using a duplicate drive bought from eBay. I have been following advice from this thread, and have been running a so-called 'quick scan' using the free version of Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition's Partition Recovery Wizard. It's been running for over 5 days now on a 320GB drive, and is only a fraction of the way through.

So my question is this, am I wasting my time doing the 'quick scan'? At this rate I will be lucky if it finishes before Christmas. Please someone tell me there's a faster way?

Preferred Solution: How can I recover data from HDD now showing as Unallocated?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How can I recover data from HDD now showing as Unallocated?

The number of sectors shown on the PRW image seems way too large for a 320GB HDD. Usually when a partition is lost the HDD has died or is dying. The clicking noise you heard is evidence the drive is gone. There's only two moving parts in an HDD, the spinning disks/platters and the Voice Coil Relay that moves the arms that hold read/write heads across the disk/s, the clicking is from the VCR 'snapping' the arms back against the stop/rest.

Have a good day,
I have 1 physical drive 80Gb, divided into 2 partitions: C and D
C is System (WinXP)
D is Data
Yesterday, i got a virus. I rebooted, and used Acronis True Image to restore backup from Secure Zone (this backup was for Partition C). Secure Zone was ok, but Partition C and D were unallocated. I recovered partition C by using a backup in Secure Zone. After recovering, partition D was still unallocated.
I didn't do anything since then.
When i run Partition Magic 8, i saw this unallocated partition
Will my data in partition D be lost when i resize Partition C to 80Gb
Please help me to recover my data in partition D,
it was very important to me !!!

I'm wating for your advices

Thanks and Best Regards

I installed Windows 10 on a new PC, with OS on Samsung 950 PRO. For data disk, at this stage, I use a Samsung 840 PRO which I transferred from my old 8.1 PC.

The data disk now shows in diskmanagment 351MB unallocated space, and 119 GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition).
How can I reclaim the 351MB unallocated to get maximum capacity of the data disk?
Maybe this a standard case of repartitioning, but I am not familiar with that and do not know how to do it.
Thanks for the help.

Answer:Recover unallocated space on data disk

Case 1:
If the 351 GB unallocated partition is on the right of the 119GB primary partition then:
right click on the 119GB partition->extend volume.
Case 2:
If the 351GB is on the left of the 119GB primary partition then:
Create a primary partition for 351GB by right click on it->Create Simple and follow the screen to create a primary partition, format, assign a letter..Move all data from the 119GB partition to the newly created 351GB PartitionRight click on 119GB -> Delete VolumeRight click on the 351GB -> Extend Volume.

I must have been lapsing in concentration on Friday. I was restoring an image from a backup drive partition and stupidly pulled the power supply for that drive thinking it was the printer. (I know - don't grin like that!)
The upshot is that the NTFS partition became unallocated. About 350Gb. Any tried and tested solutions or am I resigned to reconstructing the backups as best I can? It's impossible to replicate some of the material on there anyway.
I have tried Recuva which is hopelessy inadequate although it found some picture files and reported that the they had not been overwritten.

Answer:Recover data from Unallocated Backup Drive

Have a look at Testdisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk I have used it in the past to recover data from a wrongly formatted partition.

Hello,

when i used my win 10 my (media) Hard disk suddenly unallocated with 2 partition one it. one of the partition was encrypted with bitlocker

Now I used window 7 ultimate and to try to recover my data I follow steps according to the great guide :
http://www.normanbauer.com/2013/07/25/how-to-recover-data-from-a-deleted-bitlocker-enabled-partition/
Now the problem was on the step to create recover.img :

Hi guys
I've spent nearly all day on this problem.
I recently upgraded to a larger SSD, ran a fresh install of Window7 Prof. I noticed that the Terra-byte drive now has half of its size partitioned. I do not remember doing this and have been unsuccessful in trying to get it undone. I have browsed this forum and read all that I could find relevant. I am unable to get any response from the unallocated partition of D drive. Any right click command is greyed out. All the advice I have tried has had no remedy... please help!!!!!!!
Hope the image below works and helps.
Thanks
Cheers, Willow

Answer:How do I recover unallocated hd partition?

I hate to tell you this but your install is IMHO all screwed up.
You say you did a fresh/new install of Win 7 Pro.
Well it seems you left the other hard drives in the system when doing this and you did not move the new SSD to the top of the drive list in the bios before you started the install.
Which made the install routine see the TB drive as the first drive in the system. Windows ALWAYS copies files to the FIRST drive in the system when installing. In this case it created the 100MB system reserve partition on the TB drive where it should of been placed on the new SSD drive.
What all this means is if you remove the TB drive the system will not boot.
I would suggest you start over making sure either the new SSD drive is the only drive in the system when doing the OS install or that it is listed in the BIOS as the first drive in the system and connected to SATA port 1 with the other drives also connected.

I personally would do a new fresh install with only the SSD in the system connected to SATA port 1.

I have recently carried out a clean intall of Vista after some problems with XP.I now have a partition on my hard disk with 5GB of unallocated disk space.Looking at Computer Management/Storage from left to right, which I think important, I have: Black Header - Unallocated disk space 5.4GB.Dark Blue Header - Windows(C:)97.51GB NTFS Healthy (sytem boot etc.)Light Blue Header, Dark Green Band (extended partition): (D:)89.01GB NFTS Healthy (logical drive)How do I recover the lost space and add it to one of the partitions. The "extend partition" option is greyed out on both the C: & D: partitions. I have Partition Magic, but from reading other posts it can cause poblems in Vista and should not be used.Any help would be appreciated.Axel

Answer:help to recover c:\ drive that became unallocated

Welcome!

I hate to say this, but it looks like your only option is trying data recovery software.

Here are some free programs you can try:

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

DiskDigger | The trusted data recovery solution

I have had good luck with Kernel Data Recovery, but alas, it costs $40. You can download the trial version and see what is recoverable, but you will have to pay to actually do it.

Hello everyone,
My sister recently bought a HP Laptop.I am just an average user.So without much knowledge I messed up the partitions.I'm attaching a screenshot to show the condition. Now I want to recover the unallocated space either by combining it to C drive or by making it a separate drive (I prefer combing to C).

Now I've searched every forum and gone through every video on youtube but haven't found a solution.Everyone is suggesting that I should delete recovery drive in order to utilize the unallocated space. The thing is I cannot delete it because my sister is already pissed and then things will get worse.

For those who say not possible, I personally believe that in this era where there are so many computer experts out there, someone might have the solution that I'm looking for.

I just want to utilize the unallocated space(preferably combine with C), without deleting anything or any drives... PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE HELP ME

Answer:[Help] Recover Unallocated Space

Hi

I will start by explaining why you can't create a new partition using the free space. By default an MBR based partition table will have only four slots available. In your case, all four slots are filled so there is no more room for another new partition is available. If you just delete the "HP Tools" partition, you will be able to create a 375 GB sized primary partition for data storage. It is also possible to convert the "HP Tools" partition to "Logical" and then you will be able to create a new 'Logical" volume using the 373 GB free space. However i am not going in to the details as your goal is to add the free space to "C".

I would suggest the below steps.

1. Download and install "Partition Wizard" from the below link.

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
2. Run the tool and move the "HP Tools" partition to the end of unallocated space. The tools partition will be moved near to the recovery partition and the fee space will be moved next to the "C" drive.

3. Expand the "C" drive to cover the entire free space.
The whole process is nicely described on the official tutorial : Do you want to get extended partitions when partition space shortage happens?.

When I built my computer I left 10 gigs out of my HD partitioning (meaning I set up a 140 gig HD with one 130 gig partition so windows doesn't see the other 10 gigs) because i was going to use it for Gigabyte motherboard's HD backup program . As someone pointed out, it doesn't make much sense to backup a HD on itself. So now I want to recover the 10 gigs to try out the Windows 7 RC. How can I do this?

Thanks.

This is really easy if you use a 3rd party app like Paragon disk suite. Free to try

1-delete partition with no drive letter
2-expand the HP partition

Thats it

For some reasons I need to reinstall it a few weeks ago.
At the time of installation I deleted 'system reserved' & 'local disk C' partitions & install new version of windows.
After installation there is 3mb unallocated space.
How I recover that?

I used many partion managers. but this 3mb unallocated space not recovered yet.
If anyone knows solution to this problem, please help me?

Hello. I was recovering my OS (win 8) when a disk error occurred which did not allow me to access the partition which has the recovery files. Eventually I installed an OS but found a partition with needed files has become unallocated space. I would like to allocate the 300 gig partition and also recover the files if they are there. I do not want to merge it with the C: drive. I thought I was protecting my files by saving to a separate partition in the event the OS need be re installed.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Recover files from a unallocated partition 8.1

It's possible the original partition table was wiped when you reinstalled. The best way to approach it is to recover the files first but you will need a recovery drive with at least the same amount of space as the data you plan to recover.

Download Testdisk for Windows. Unzip to a folder on the desktop and run it. Do a Quick Search. Is should pick up a number of partitions on the drive. Highlight each and press the "P" key until you find the files you are looking for. If not then do a Deeper Search. If you do find your files,  you can recover all of them by pressing "a" and then upper case "C" or highlight individual files/directories by pressing the ":" key and then upper case "C" to copy.

Because the default location of recovery is the folder you started Testdisk from, it would be best to unzip the testdisk folder to a external drive with enough capacity to recover all  your data and start the program from that folder.

Here is a step by step guide using Testdisk.

HELP. Just made Recovery Drive by creating a small partition drive (50 Gb) on an external USB HD (500 Gb). It all seemed to go well after a copy of the Recovery Drive was made. I had two other partition drives containing important files on the same USB HD and they were still being recognized and accessible. I then did a recovery copy of the drivers and applications to Recovery Drive and suddenly the two other partitions disappeared. I can only see the Recovery Drive and unallocated volume on the USB HD. Can someone help me to find how to recover the missing partition drives from a large unallocated volume? What did I do wrong?

So my external hdd has of 500gb from iomega has served me for quite some years but today my laptop (main pc) just does not show it anymore and I cannot for the life of me get access to the files which were on there.
here is what i know so far.

- Drive shows up in devicemanager as Mass storage
- drive shows up in the screen to eject mass storage devices
- disk management shows that the entire 465gb worth of storage has been unallocated with a black bar above it

So after searching for a bit I found a program called EASEUS data recovery wizard. it started scanning the drive and showed all the folders and files that were on the disk, ALL OF THEM and that made me really happy. However when it was completely done scanning it created a special kind of file to just organize every single file in the document based on type rather then the order and state they were in previously and besides that, the full program would cost me 50$

I looked for more programs and then found Partition recovery Wizard Minitools, it started scanning but instead of one partition it showed a bunch of partitions of about 600 mb's each. I really have clue what it means and i do not know if it is a good thing or a bad thing

in case it turns out to be a bad thing, what do i do next?

Answer:help recover external hdd with unallocated space.

Well it appears your external hard drive has failed, Data recovery can be expensive $50 is cheap IF it can work????? That's a big IF. Minitool will work with you with there paid version. Again IF it will work. These are consumer tool not professional tools. So how important is your data. Sorry I can't be helpful here at all.

One think you might try is to get the External drive out of its enclosure and hook it up directly to SATA connection in your computer and hope that it only the Connection or the actual enclosure chipset that is failing?

Hi. My main internal hard drive expired unexpectedly, but in a complete and spectacular fashion. Still not sure what happened, but was not too bothered as all my important and unreplaceable data was backed up on my external drive (baby pictures, music collection, etc.).

I threw in another hard drive I had lying round (had Windows 98 on it) and tried to install WIN XP Pro from the CD.

I managed to do this OK, but when I tried to find my external drive it's not there. Computer Management lets me see the disk but it's got a black line underneath which says it's unallocated.

Anyone know how to restore or make a new partition without completly loosing these files?. I've searched all the topics that I can find of the forum, but really don't know what I'm doing, so decided to seek advice before really screwing it up.

Thanks for your help.
Aaron.

Answer:Recover Unallocated Partition on Xternal Drive

Somehow the MBR / partition tables on the external must have become corrupted. Needless to say all recovery actions are dangerous.

Below someone who had similar type of issue and who fixed it.

Prior to attempting this, I would try to copy your data off the drive and to this end would suggest using Puppy Linux which may (probably) be able to read the data.

See post below as to how to do this.

There are other avenues which can be followed for data retrieval some swear by Data Doctor. You may even use the suggestion made by the user in the top post ie Partition Find & Mount.

I was trying to create recovery media on a USB stick for my new laptop but for some reason it wasn't working. I kept trying it and eventually it worked. A while later I came to access my USB hard drive but it wasnt showing up in My Computer. I checked Disk Management and found my USB HDD had a 32gb RAW partition and a 2.7TB Unallocated Space partition.

So it looks like the recovery media application was trying to write to my USB HDD instead of my USB stick. It obviously didn't write anything to the HDD as the 32gb partition is a RAW format.

I have tried two pieces of partition recovery software but they only find loads of little partitions.

I haven't tried any file recovery software yet. I was hoping I could use partition recovery software.

Could anyone help me out?

Hey guys, it was just that the blue screen came up while I was on Windows 7, and afterwards, the computer would not boot Windows, gives a blue screen.
But my Ubuntu as a 2nd operating system installed on the same drive works fine. I opened GParted Partition Editor and I have a 596 GB single "unallocated" partition.

I'm pretty sure the files are still in there because it successfully reads and loads Windows system files in Safe Mode, but does not boot them, blue screen again. And my personal files in Ubuntu are still there.

The Win 7 installation USB doesn't install because the hard drive does not appear. So how do I recover my hard drive into its drive C and drive D partitions? I can risk formatting drive C where Windows 7 is in. But I want to recover drive D at all costs.

The System Recovery Options are accessible (ie windows command prompt), but I do not have a restore point.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Recover unallocated win7 hard drive from Ubuntu

Okay got it solved after 4 hours of work. I used GParted Live, as a bootable USB.
In its terminal window, ran the following:

sudo -s
fdisk -l

to monitor hard drive status. After that I ran:

testdisk

which has its own UI you can move around with up down arrows and Enter button to play around your HDD. After that I ran:

fdisk -l

to monitor hard drive status once again to see if it worked. I recommend GParted bootable version rather than the desktop version when a virus screws up your HDD to its entirety.

The drive does not come encrypted; that is done by the user. Since you are asking about encryption of the drive, I am closing this thread. We do not assist with any type of encryption since we are unable to ascertain whether you own the drive or not.

I have a WD HDD which is around a 2008 model and I have set a password on it. The power connector became loose inside the casing so I hooked it up to a caddy. When I plugged it into my laptop it showed up as unallocated space. Was wondering what would of made it show up as unallocated space. Thanks

I have just placed my 1tb Western digital hard drive into a NexStar 3 case.

when connecting to the cpu, the hard drive is recognised howevere it does not show up on explorer.

i have gone to cpu management and it has said "you must initialize a disk before logical Disk Manager can access it" (basically the drive is not initialized and unallocated.it talks about a gtp partion style als)

Now i believe by doing this it will format the drive, which i dont want to do. also i have tried to reassign a drive letter but cannot get this option.

i can safely eject the drive so it shows up on device manager also.

How can i access my files and have this drive show up without deleting my movies???

Hi,

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I bought a second internal hard drive about a month ago. I partitioned it and used one partition for Windows backup and the other partition is for storing data.

I moved a lot of data from my primary disk on to the partition on the new disk. Everything has been working fine until now.

This morning I booted up the computer and the new disk is not showing in Computer. I rebooted and checked the bios, the disk is showing there so I let the OS boot and then opened Disk Manager. The new disk is showing there too but now it appears as unallocated and not initialized.

How do I fix this and how do I fix Windows 7 so that it doesn't happen again? I really do not want to lose the data on the disk.

Many thanks in advance.

Fido.

Hello. Our little boy has a Fizzbook Spin running Windows 7 Home Premium. The 32GB ssd drive failed and I have replaced it with a 250GB 2.5" Sata drive (that I had planned to use to upgrade my laptop!). Installation of the drive went well, and although the old drive had failed before I had chance to clone it, the Fizzbook has a good back-up program that lets you make a bootable usb image, and that worked a treat, just reloaded the image and all fine. Only problem is, instead of showing 250GB Drive C only shows 30GB (there only is Drive C by the way). I just checked in Disk Management and there is 203.07 unallocated space. Maybe I should have formatted and partitioned the drive before reinstalling - I didn't, because the Fizzbook has no dvd drive.

So my question is - am I going to have to start from scratch, format the drive and reinstall again (and do 6 months worth of Windows updates again!), or can I just partition the unallocated space? Thanks.

Answer:New ssd drive showing unallocated space

Sorted - I extended the C partition and now all seems ok.

I have a Samsung 5TB D3 external HDD. Something got screwed and it ended up as a RAW disk. I've managed to get it back to showing in W10 Disk Management as
Disk 2

PARTITION 1 ?
N:
2048.00 BG NTFS
Healthy (Prmary Partition)
PARTITION 2 ?

I can create / delete files on the N: drive.
Can anyone tell me how I can merge this unallocated space into the N: drive? Windows 10 Disk Management won't let me do anything with it.

Thank you.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

As the title says... I tend to upgrade my Main C Drive which currently is a 256GB Samsung SSD 840 Series once every 6-12 months or so for performance as the price of SSD's come down. I have 3 other HDD's in my computer that always stay the same and are all WD 1TB (D, E, and F). However, with this last upgrade, one of my HDD's decided to become a PITA and is now unrecognized according to Computer Management.

According to Computer Management, Disk 1 is "Unknown", Not Initialized, and Unallocated.

It looks as if I need to initialize the disk but I'm scared to. Do I have to initialize and if so, which option do I choose?

I have many years of personal files and pictures on this particular drive.

Please help me with the steps I need to take to recover my data on this HDD.

Many Thanks in advance !!!

Answer:Upgraded main HDD and now a secondary HDD is showing Unallocated

Hello kemble. Welcome to the forum

Do not initialize the disk if you want to recover your data. Doing so will overwrite the file system and make this much more difficult.

I assume the old 1TB HDD had the OS on it?
Do you know if it was initialized as MBR or GPT?
The new SSD: was that initialized as MBR or SSD?
When you installed W7 on the SSD, did you disconnect both 1TB drives while doing so?

Please post a pic of Disk Management without the initialize window blocking the view. Expand it so we can read everything.

Answer:partition showing unallocated need to restore partitions

Do you need to restore the partitions but also the data that was on them? There's a number of free partitioning tools 'out there' [I like GPARTED] but getting the data back is a different thing. And there's always the Windows Disk Management for working with partitions [but not the data on them].

I have two hard drive. The main one with the OS is on a chain by itself. The second one is the slave on another chain with a DVD burner as the master. I replaced my main hard drive and did a clean install of Windows XP SP2. Now my secondary HD is showing up as "Unallocated" in Disk Management. No drive letter is assigned to it.

I did realize something was weird cause when I boot off the CD to do the OS install I did see that it shows the second drive as Unallocated too. I just thought since there was just files on it that was the way it supposed to be.

Anyone have any suggestions? Is there a way to fix this? If not, is there a way to recover my files from this drive. I really don't want to lose the files on this drive.

Thanks

Ok, for my 2600k upgrade I backed everything up onto a data 500GB HD from my windows 7 Pro 64bit. Once my SSD came in I installed windows on it and then plugged in the 500GB data drive. Unforutnately it didn`t show up and I could only find it listed in disc management as a 500gb unallocated space HDD. Figuring this was something odd about it being plugged in as a secondary drive I put it back into the external USB drive but neither the new or the original system would recognize it other than in disc management as unallocated space. I went and plugged the external drive into my XP system...samething. Any ideas about how to get this data back. It`s very important stuff and I don`t want to lose it.

Thanks guys,

I'm having a slight problem. My Win7 system crashed and killed two of the 4 drives in it, including the C: drive. I purchased a new Win8 system with a Gigabyte Z77-HD3 motherboard. One of the drives are recognized by the new system (A 2TB WDC WD20EADS), but the other one is a 3TB WDC WD30EZRX, which was a little less than half full. The drive does shows up in the BIOS Setup, and shows up as Unallocated in Computer Management. without a drive letter.
I've come to the conclusion that there is no way of just being able to use the drive, but I would like to be able to recover the files to another drive and then reformat the drive and continue along. I have tried to run Power Data Recovery by MiniTool to try to recover the files, with no luck. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I had to do a 'low level format' for my PNY 64 GB flash drive, it was write protected and I tried everything I could find to fix it
(regedit, diskpart, format) and I ran across that and I decided to try it. Well my 64 gb flash drive decided to work again after that but it seems only on the conditions that it is now 30.4 GB. At first I just thought the rest of the space was unallocated. Nope, after booting linux it wasn't showing any unallocated space.

So my question is, am I screwed or is there something I can do to fix this?

Thanks!

Edit: I used the program RecoverTool_V2.00.28_L0920.exe for the 'low level format'

I followed this page : Western Digital drive showing up with Unallocated in disc management

but at the fifte screen check disk shows: "partition: Read error"
I enter search to find partition but after a long long time it finds nothing!
I dont know what to do

Answer:WD Passport drive showing up with Unallocated in disc management

Thanks payman for putting out the error message you got on the fifth screen in Test Disk.

That was indeed a message that I had not anticipated when I wrote that post you had referred.

It would naturally mean that even Test Disk was unable to read your hard disk.

As far as I can see, your hard disk is beyond normal redemption/recovery and may require a professional Recovery if you want to recover any data.

However in all these cases, nothing is definite until proven and I may be wrong too .

Hold on to check whether other experts chipin with their brainwaves.

I have a Maxtor one touch II that I installed on a new machine. When I ho to My Computer, the drive is not there. When I look in drive management, it says that the drive is unallocated. There is data on the drive that I can not be lost. When I reconnected the drive back to the old machine, it remained unallocated and still didn't show up in My Computer. Anyone have suggestion on how to retrieve the data from the drive?

Answer:Unallocated drive that has Data. Please help!!

If it is unallocated, it doesn't have a file system any longer. The only way that I can think of to retreive the data from it, is either with a retrieval software program, or by sending it to a professional retreival service. The former would be far, far cheaper. In fact, all that it might cost you is time, because some of these programs are free.

Hi folks,

I upgraded one of my internal SATA HDDs to a 1TB version today. It is a second drive which I use for data while the first HDD contains the Windows 7 OS.

The drive was recognized by the PC on reboot but doesn't show up in My Computer. I can view the drive under the Disk management portion of Computer Management. It shows up as Unallocated. I'm a little confused as to the next step to make the hard drive visible in my computer and allow me to use the space.

I cannot seem to find a menu to allow me to format the drive. When I right click on the drive in Disk management I can see "New Simple volume" available to me. Should I go ahead and create a new simple volume or do something different?

Any help to get this sorted is appreciated.

Welcome Sannesley to the windows 7 forums.

Yes, you are correct, in Disk Management, it asks for you to create a new simple volumn, say yes and the you will have the option to create partition(s). Select which you want and then it will create a drive for youR partition(s), you can break it down into more than one drive if you wish. But each must be formatted before it can show up in My Computer as a drive letter. Some suggest that you at least make it two drives of 500gigs each. Won't make it any faster but might be less confusion for some..

Hello,
I have a Seagate 500GB Free Agent Desktop USB ST305004FDA1E1-RK, P/N 9NF2AL-570 that I was using to store my Acronis true image backups on of an older desktop pc. I had been having issues that the older desktop pc and wound up just doing a clean install and I was going to use my image backup from a few months ago to restore the pc to that time (only because I forgot about my image backup before doing the clean install).

I plugged the Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive it into that pc the other day to restore it to one of those backups; it was recognized by the pc so I put the rescue / boot disc into the cd drive and restarted the pc. On restart It did show the screen for starting true image and then another screen popped up and vanished just as quickly and Windows XP Pro started instead. So I tried 3 more times with the same results. I then created another bootable rescue media disc and tried to load the TrueImage program but it again showed the True Image screen and then booted to Windows XP instead. It was late by then so I just shut down the computer and turned everything off and thought that I would try again the next day.

The following afternoon when I turned the computer on the Seagate is no longer being recognized by the computer. I tried plugging it into my laptop with the same results. It is listed in device manager and if I go to My Computer and right click for manage and click on disk management it is being shown but as unallocated space now.... Read more

I have a main C drive that got corrupt somehow. I threw a new drive in my system and reinstalled windows etc.

I hooked the corrupt drive to another computer as a slave. It does not show up in My Computer, but shows up the bios fine. It shows up in Disk Manager as an Unallocated drive as well.

I tried the data recovery software Ontrack Data Recovery, but after it recovers the files, it seems to freeze on "Building Tree...". I even left it on overnight and it still froze on building tree.

Any suggestions on what to do, or other data recovery software I can buy? Thanks alot guys

Answer:unallocated drive lost the data

Once you format a drive any data on it is lost...no way to recover it. Just being unallocated you could have still recovered the data. There are some professional services out there that do that type of recovery...military, police forensics and specialty companies....but it's all very expensive and not guaranteed.

Evening

Well... I tried to merge a partition with Partition Magic and half way through it give me an error "1523: cluster beyond end" and now the part i tried to merge has become unallocated.

I've looked around on the internet (and here) but not found much info on how to recover the data left in the unallocated part, the stuff on the drive is not all that important but I'd much prefer to have it than not have it!

Some of the things i tried...
Ran check disk with both options ticked - fixed something (or so it said!) but still unallocated
Tried to run the Partition Magic undelete option - "Access violation at address 004b8016 in module 'PMagicnt.exe'. Read of address 0000004C" after about 40sec's

Read something on the web that increasing the partition size will allow access to the data after the process is finished, but was a little bit skeptical about it.

Any help would be awesome!

Cheers

1st should I partition it as extended?

I purchased a new Motherboard to upgrade my computer and new SSD drive. I installed Windows 7 again on my new SSD. I had a 3TB Seagate Drive that had 3 partitions. One partition had Windows 7 and system files. The other two had data. Now, one of my data partitions shows as Unallocated. I recently shrunk the data partition(D to let me increase the system partition(C size. I used gParted on the D: partition, but it would not resize the C: partition. However, Parition Wizard successfully resized the C: partition to use the space freed up by shrinking the D: partition. They are both NTFS, if that helps.

I used the computer all day the day after I did this, rebooting the system several times after installing applications, and reading/writing data ( like playing music in iTunes and saving MS Word docs ) on D: without any problems.

The next morning, my system was in sleep mode ( balanced power scheme ). I woke it up, and applications popped up messages about missing files and Dropbox say it could not find my dropbox folder.

The D: drive was gone from explorer, and disk manager reports unallocated space where the D: partition used to be. Its the exact same size (363GB) and location.

I rebooted the system but that did not fix it. I'm at work now, but I'm making an attack plan for when I get home. Can you recommend any tools for resolving this issue? I read a few posts about an application called TestDisk...what do you think?

Answer:Windows 7 Data Drive (D:) Suddently Unallocated

I think the 1st thing you should do is try running system restore to a point before you resized your partitions.

Hope fully it will restore a seemingly deleted partition.

My 3T HD suddenly has lost its data, says it is unallocated, is not recognised by the computer, has no drive letter and the only way I can see it is by using a 3rd party software that says it has no partition anymore. I have thousands of songs I've created on it in the last 5-6 years and want the whole partition restored to normal with all of the data intact. It is also saying it is a LOGICAL partition now and it's all greyed out. Can anybody help me?

Still don't know how to go about it, but at least I now have an expired pro version of partition retrieval software I'm confident and hopeful will aid me! I have confidence and faith I will retrieve the identical partition tree structure with folders and files plus all data intact... even though others have told me my HD is toast!

Hi,

The only thing I can think to try is to boot into Partition Wizard, and then attempt to recover any partitions on that HDD using the Recover Partition Wizard option.

Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

Hi guys, new user here... having somewhat of a crisis! My PC has been running dog slow for months now, full of old data and programs that I don't use anymore so I backed all my important documents - photos, vids, software and all that - onto my second hard drive*

First hard drive, partitioned into C, D and E - all partitions deleted.
Second hard drive, was formatted, has tons of music on and now backups of all my data which is very important to me.

PC is running XPSP2.

Ok, I'm an IT technician and I have NEVER seen this happen before... I deleted the partitions off the first hard drive, leaving the second well alone because it has all my backups on there and then recreated a partition - so the first drive is now split into C and D. Reinstalled Windows and bam, away we go.

However... when I went into disk management, the second hard drive is NOT showing up!! All my data is on here, we're talking photos from holidays, gigs, photography excursions and basically my entire life on there! It would've taken weeks to back it up to DVD and I have done it this way before and it worked absolutely fine.

Now, after some frantic searching on the internet... and punching through my wall... a number of websites have suggested creating a new partition on the second hard drive, a primary partition but then NOT formatting the drive and this should then allow the drive to be recognised once again by Windows, assign it a drive letter and most of all not delete ... Answer:Urgent help please regarding partioning unallocated space without data loss!

Sounds strange to me. I would use a good program such as Acronis to take a look. Also other recovery software. There are a variety of software programs (none good and free) to rescue your data, which you can find on www.tucows.com and www.majorgeeks.com.
I would use Acronis for a first look. It can often identify these missing partitions without erasing data.
We have very good luck recovering missing files using a number of recovery programs... even when the partition has disappeared.
Just go slowly.
I would put that drive in a USB enclosure and install a new drive, then using recovery software recovery all that is recoverable.

Hello! I recently bought a 3TB external USB hard disk, which suddenly did not want to start. When switching on, I could here the disk try to start to rotate, but it didn't, as if the provided power was too weak or so.

I unscrewed the disk from its housing and put the housing with its S-ATA-to-USB controller aside and plugged the disk - a "ST3000DM001-1CH166, Seagate Barracuda" - to a PC cases S-ATA Port, now it really started. Then, as soon as I started the disk manager, I was asked to "activate" the disk, which I did (maybe this was a fault?)

Now I have activated the disk, but in disk manager there are two partitions showing up now:
2048 GB unallocated,
746,54 GB unallocated

I installed EaseUS Data recovery wizard (to my systems hard disk of course) and started a recovery search, which took about 48 hours. I got a complete list of all files that where/are on the disk and obviously I can recover all, actually I started the recovery to another disk. But the complete folder structure would be lost, if recovering the files this way, all would be saved in one huge folder "NTFS lost files", or so. This makes this kind of recovery 99% useless for me.

Now EaseUS is able to save a once done search result and load it later, so one only once has to run that time consuming search. So I saved the result and interrupted the even much more time consuming recovery.

At least I know now that the files are all on the disk, and also is the folder s... Read more

Answer:3TB Hard disc became "unallocated", how to recover?

Wait for more comments, but I think your better move would have been to attempt to recover the original partition, rather than immediately try to recover the files.

If that disk originally had a single 3 TB partition, it was initialized as "GPT", not the more commonly found MBR. MBR partitions are limited to 2.2 TB.

That EaseUS tool you have may or may not have partition recovery capability. The standard recommendation on this forum for partition recovery is to use Partition Wizard:

Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online

You might download that tool, but I'd wait for more comments before using it or EaseUS.

I have a table like this in my database.

CategoryID------ParentID-------Categor…
1---------------------Null-------------Sports
2---------------------1-----------------Cricket
3---------------------2-----------------T20
4---------------------2-----------------ODI
5---------------------1-----------------Tennis
6---------------------5-----------------Singles
Now i want to retrieve whole table data and display the data in the form of Tree View. I tried to represent the data using "Tree" Data Structure in Java. After that i tried to convert the data into JSON Object by using GSON library. I am not able to produce the Json Tree data. I am facing so many problems. Can anyone please explain me how to convert the Data available in that table to Json tree Data. If json data is ready i can use alloy ui tree javascript to display the tree view in my Jsp.

I had a Western Digital 1.5 Tb My Book essential edition (pictured below) that my wife gave me for Christmas. i have filled all but about 400 gigs with very important data. MY ENTIRE LIFE WAS ON THIS DRIVE. for the purpose of securing it in my computer (via sata connection) versus having it possibly damaged keeping on my desk. i removed the HD from the case, unplugged the "usb convertor chip"(Pictured Below) from the sata connector on the drive and plugged it into my machine. at first the drive does not show in my computer. The computer recognizes that a drive is plugged in but that is as far as it goes. When I go to Disk Management, the drive shows up 1.5 tb of UNALLOCATED SPACE. At this point my stomach drops to my feet.  Panicked and worried I disconnect from the internal machine and reconnect to the ? wd chip? and fire up my machine. Still no drive. However the Western Digital program that comes on the drive shows up(must be contained on the chip).  I have done much research online and have have been so far unable to find somebody who has the exact same issue and how to resolve it. Western digitals forums are ?closed due to maintenance? and ive been unable to get an answer from phone support either.I work at a computer store/repair shop and have access to technicians and limitless tools and programs. If somebody could please tell me what it is ive done and how I need to fix it It would be greatly appreciated. I know my data still has to be on there bec... Read more

Answer:WD My Book 1.5tb Showing as "unallocated space" after removed from case. PLEASE HELP!

If you have tried to plug the drive into other machines and they all say unallocated space then it seems it got wiped somehow. You could try to use Recuva. It's a tool by Piriform software. Its for recovering deleted files. Download here: http://www.piriform.com/recuva  then install, open the program, target the drive, scan, and pray! Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I just recently burnt data to a dvd, but now when I put the disk in the dvd drive it comes up as having no data.
I can see on the back of the disc that data has been burnt to it. I've also verified that the DVD drive is working correctly. I think possibly that the session wasn't closed properly????
Can somone pls recommend a "free" software that will allow me to recover the data off of the DVD +R disc.
Thanks.

After splitting C: drive into two partitions by disk management tool, i am facing following problems:
1. Start up/boot problem (Windows 7 not started)
2. one old partition is hidden

i made many different attempt to solve the issue but failed.

in my last attempt, i install new windows 7 at new partition
this time my old partition has gone to hide but it is viewable only in disk management tool; it is not active here

kindly help me to recover my old data which is placed at old partition.

thanking you in anticipation

Answer:want help to recover data

Did you (1) try unhiding the partition using Disk Management, or (2) assigning it a drive letter using Disk Management?

If both of these fail, you will need to use a data recovery app to get your data back. Is that what you are asking to do?

Answer:Want to Recover Data

1st Option: Remove hard drive and install as secondary drive on seperate machine, try to copy files across. If 2nd drive not allowing to read try....
2nd Option:Go to any 'shareware' 'freeware' site and download PC Inspector File Recovery, install on working drive again run check on drive and see if files are picked up.
3rd Option: Take to data recovery experts and pay $$$$$$$ Huge amounts, if spindles are damaged i.e. hard drive dead there is no other options i'm afraid, sorry.

Hello and thanks for reading, A few days ago I asked a question about recovering my data from a broken Raid0 array but had no solutions suggested. I've muddled my way through to the point where win7 can now see my array as a single stripped disk set in Disk Management. However it's showing as RAW. Now I haven't reformatted the drives as my understanding is that this will cause me to lose all my data. So my question is really how to proceed? Is there a way to mount the drives without reformatting them and then attempt to recover the data that is still (hopefully) on them?
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Can I recover my data?

Hello Mehrajhabibmir, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It depends on how you installed the fresh copy of Vista on whether you may be able to recover your data. Did you install it on the same partition as your previous Vista installation, or did you install it on a new partition or drive instead?

You can use the tutorial below to remove the Windows Vista Recovery entry.

Hello, I own a DELL INSPIRON 15 and I recently experienced a problem with desktop error in my operating system Windows Vista Premium 64bit. I tried to use System Restore but it didn't work. Dell offers a program called Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0 to restore the laptop to it's original factory state. I backed up my files into a folder called Emergency, located on drive C, then I did the formatting. I checked and my files were there, I restored them, but when I restarted the laptop, the same desktop error appeared. So I foolishly did the formatting again, I did it because Dell DataSafe program assured the files that were in the Emergency folder were not going to be deleted. So I did it, and when I went to the Emergency folder everything was gone. I checked the disk space and there was more space available. So I tried to do a System Restore again to go back before I did the 2nd formatting, and now it is stucked again and Vista won't start. So I suppose I have to do a formatting again, but now I don't know how can I recover my files. Is there a way? Please help!

I recently installed win xp-3. All went well until one day when I tried to open the drive D, it popped up "This disk in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format now?" I store all photographs, Important documents, emails, etc.

I have not formatted the disk..

I had really very important data on that drive and I want it to recover/backup. I tried all the means.. I did some search on net, tried different kinds of data recovery software, but nothing worked out. please.. please.. help me recover my data..

I tried data recovery wizard program, which they said will recover raw partitions... but it failed.
I tried recover my files.. which also failed.
I tried testdisk, which failed. and many others.. but of no avail

In disk management, it shows Disk is healthy and it showing as:
Layout: partition
Type: Basic
File system: (showing nothing... it is blank... other drives showing NTFS)
Status: Healthy
capacity: 192.32
Free Space: 192.32
%free: 100%
fault tolerance: NO

My hdd is Seagate Barracuda 7200.12, 500 GB, Partition on D is 200 GB. Gegabyte motherboard

I will be very thankful somebody help me out......

If i am posting it in wrong forum or wrong way please change...

Well...there is no guarantee that any data-recovery program will be successful...as you have discovered.

The best program I have used costs and can be found at GetDataBack - Data Recovery Software - http://runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm , but that doesn't mean that it will do the job for you.

Question: recover data

I recently reformatted my computer, but for some reason, it formatted both my regular drive that I wanted to format, and my backup drive with all my data. I was wondering if there is going to be an "easy" and "free" method of recovering the data, specifically, reversing it back to the same condition it was in before the reformat.

Thanks!

Answer:recover data

No, sorry. Nothing particuarly easy but there are some choices. You can try a number of freeware apps such as this: http://officerecovery.com/freeundelete/ providing all you did was reformat and did not do anything else. I haven't used this but it was recommended once before here. It's for the NTFS file system. What file system was this drive?

I've used PCInspector and it's a fine tool but that was for recovering specific files not an entire drive's contents.

What 'volume' ?
Please give all the details of what you did to delete the 'volume'
Simplest way would to be to look in the Recycle bin for deleted folders and files, however you state it is a 'volume' so please say what you mean by that.

I had to format my C drive and there were files on there that I wanted but forgot to copy them. Is there a way to retrieve them because system restore won't work after you install XP again

Answer:recover data

Once you have formatted your drive you haveto all intents and purposes lost all files on it.

there are forensic investigation utilities that might recover part or all of the files, but they are not available to the public and only to law enforcement bodies. It is debateable whether they will work, depending on the effectiveness of the format

Question: Recover USB Data

I am in a sticky situation.

I turned my USB drive into a bootable USB drive. The problem is, I turned the wrong one, the one with all my important files on it.

I would like to know if I could recover the files on my USB, but that isn't the biggest problem - because it's a bootable drive now, Vista does not sense it as a USB hard drive, it does not appear.

How can I get my data back?

Thanks for any help.

[drive] is not acceptable the disk structure is comupted and unreasonable

How to Recover Data?

Answer:How to Recover Data

Hi carlo67

not acceptable usually has some issues with the MBR...it can be repaired sometimes, but to recovery data first is more safer, after the data is back you can then choose to repaire or format or whatever. I myself use the Easeus backup software which is great, but noticed that they have recently got a beta version of the Data Recovery software, it seems simple yet efficient, you could also try just click out and download there, but the first thing after you recover the data, make sure you do backup regularily, also Macrium is a fine backup freebie, it's the safe way and much more easier when there is anything.

Question: Recover data

I have a dell inspiron 6000 with windows XP PRO (NTFS) installed and the computer hangs up during boot up. The hard drive seems to be corrupt. I read some of the sticky threads out here and the best option seems is to try and run the Maxtor Powerblast. However I fear losing some important data in my D and E drives on the harddisk. Is there any way I can boot into DOS copy some important data over to my external hardrive (connected through firewire) and then try this utility up. I tried Recovery console but I get an access is denied on most of the dos commands. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Recover data

The absolute safest option is to remove the HardDrive and using a notebook to PC connector (they're usually about $1 on ebay) plug it into a Desktop computer as "Slave" (ie where the CD/DVD usually goes) and backup (using just explorer) from there.
