Force lock windows after set time

Question: Force lock windows after set time

Hi,

I looking for a way to limit time on the PC - auto lock Windows after 30 minutes, even (and especially) when the computer is not idle.
When the user will log back into Windows by entering the Windows password, the counter will start again from 30 minutes.

The app should start automatically and silent with Windows, and the user should not be able to stop this app without a password.

Thanks, Nir.

Preferred Solution: Force lock windows after set time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Use parental controls. Only works on user accts, not admins.

i want to make windows 10 able to play all of its sounds like back in the day, including login and log off sounds, lock and unlock sounds, shutdown sounds and constant startup sound without disabling fastboot. and yes i have did all those registry hacks to show hidden sounds again but they dont work anymore in these newer builds.

Answer:Can i FORCE or mod windows 10 to play all misc sounds? e.g lock/unlock

Hi, this looks like the sort of thing you need, but you refer to registry hacks... so these may be ones you've tried. I've no idea of course.

You might prefer to simply set up your own scheduled task to play a sound - e.g. for log on, lock- you can't set a scheduled task to run on log off.

Note that with MS continually tweaking and generally simplifying GUI features (less freedom to tweak) it may no longer be possible to do that. What's possible will also be build dependent.

I've not tried it, so you can see if any work for you and advise.

I'm implementing a new policy that forces our computers to sleep after 30 minutes. The problem is that this interferes with our off-hours virus scanning and scheduled shutdown procedures.

Is there a way to force Windows to wake up at certain times? Preferably a way that could be pushed out via SMS or something else.

This would solve all my problems.

Thanks.

Answer:Force Windows to wake at a certain time

Create a scheduled task, in its properties set a check box next to 'Wake the computer to run this task'.

If that does not work follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929463
and make sure that S3 sleep mode is not disabled in BIOS.

I was sailing smooth but last 2 days I am getting random screen locks and then have to force re-boot.

I looked at my minidump file "last modified date" and it shows 7/30/2010 - does that mean that windows did not crash - but the screen locked up anyway???

Also noticed that tonight when it locked up, some music i had playing kept playing till I force quit the computer. (don't know if that means anything)

Answer:screen lock = force re-boot

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

Is it possible to force the function lock key 'on' during boot-up with a wireless keyboard

Answer:winxp force function lock wireless keyboard

Ripped from another site:The new Microsoft keyboards assign actions such as Save or Open to the function keys. To enable the default functionality of a function key without performing the action that Microsoft has assigned to the key, you must press the Function Lock key before you press the function key. Unfortunately, the new keyboards don't contain a programmatic way to set the state of the Function Lock key. Therefore, you can't configure the keyboard to enable the Function Lock key by default; you must press Function Lock every time you start your machine.

IT Manager rolled out autolock after 1 hour if inactivity. However, the way he did it nuked the users screen saver option. This coupled with them being forced to have a 1 hour inactivity limit (Some users want less time) is causing some waves.

Just curious if there is another way to get GP to auto lock workstations while retaining the screen saver.

Answer:Group Policy: Force lock AND retain screensaver?

you could schedule a task to run on idle, set the conditions to 1 hour and have it run:

Code:

rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

I have not tested this, it's just an idea.

Hello Forum,

To begin with i would like to congratulate the admin team for maintaining such an awesome forum. I never felt the need to register because most of my seraches landed to this site for solution except for this one, so here i am with my problem.

I have 2 week old HP pavalion notebook pc with pre-installed Windows 8.1 64bit single language. Untill few days back, when i presses windows+L the lock screen would pop up immediately. But now whenever i do it, it takes time to lock.

I clocked it and it took approx 30-35 sec to lock. I am not sure what might be the problem or if this is  al all normal behaviour. Have to look at 'Please wait' screen for 30 sec to get lock screen image.

Kindly help,
Thanks.

I am running Windows 10 on my two home computers (laptop and desktop), and it drives me crazy that the console locks after 5 minutes and we have to enter a PIN to wake it back up. My wife has pretty much stopped using the laptop because she can't stand it. I had figured out how to disable it in Windows 8.1, but it appears they removed the option to add that to the settings in Windows 10. I have been searching the interwebs for days to try and find a solution posted somewhere and I am really surprised by the lack of complaints about this. I can't believe we're the only ones who find it maddeningly annoying. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions about what to do?
Thanks,
Nate

So, I have searched the internet for what I am trying to find but the only thing that comes up is how to add a timer that will turn the display off after a certain time WHILE the lock-screen is on. That's not what I am asking.

What I am asking is if there is a way to auto-lock the computer after a certain amount of time. I know you can activate a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and then once touched again it will show up at the lockscreen. That's not what I want. I have the lock-screen setup to play a slideshow of pictures that I want to play when not in use. (This is a 58" touchscreen display that is used to interact with a powerpoint presentation in a public area). If I leave the desktop screensaver option on, it'll turn off the lockscreen slides. Why does that matter if the slideshow is running you may be asking? Well, I have a script on the desktop of this computer that will lock the computer with a single click. This is because when someone is done doing a presentation, I want them to be able to lock the screen immediately so that when they walk away someone can't just walk by and start messing with a wide-open computer.

So, idk if this is possible or if someone has a better solution but i'd appreciate any input.

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

The whole thing started to appear around 3 days ago. The problem is that everytime I boot, windows 10 stays on a weird lock screen without any buttons for a long long time. There are just 4 icons in the bottom right corner (shut down, accesibility, ethernet...) It sometimes manages to get to desktop, and sometimes not. Not sure what caused it, could be a recent windows update, not sure tho. I ran some HDD scans and everything turned out fine, also did a registry cleanup, tried disabling lock screen, and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions or solutions?

Answer:Windows 10 stuck at lock screen for a long time

Welcome to the TenForums @Taukonza

Could you please review your update history and see if any updates for Windows or Drivers were installed in last week?

You mentioned when you boot. Not sure if this is happening on restart or power on or both. If it is power on booting can I suggest a quick test. Open a command prompt (admin) and type

powercfg -h off

This will disable hibernation and in turn Fast Startup. Test. If no change you can re-enable by typing

powercfg -h on

After you boot have you reviewed your Event Viewer to see if Windows is kicking out any serious errors to the system log?

Hi,

apologies if this has been covered before somewhere else.
I am trying to remove the time and date from the lock screen. having searched I have seen several customisation options but the only one that actually covered this specifically was to make a change in regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SystemProtectedUserData\S-1-5-21-x-x-x-x\AnyoneRead\LocaleInfo

this brought about issues relating to administrator accounts which seem to be a common problem with windows 8.1.
nearly all of the solutions were not available to me but I finally found I could make the change in regedit by changing ownership of the file and changing the format of the time to a space. unfortunately the date is still showing.
how can I remove the date?

further, just to clarify, does the original account I signed in with have full administrator privileges? are they disabled and need to be enabled?
ive seen the tutorial on the built in elevated administrator account, this didn't work on its own either. do some files require a change of ownership to be altered regardless of which account you are signed in with including the administrator account?

any help appreciated

thanks

Brad

As the title says, I couldn't find it anywhere, but I was looking to have it so that after a set period of time Windows will automatically lock out the user (me). I'm not talking about having a screensaver come up, but I've seen it before, where it basically looks like the logon screen of XP, where you have to click on your name to go back into Windows, and type in your password again.

Can someone direct me to where I set this option? I thought it'd be in the standard haunts, but I don't see it anywhere.

Thanks!

Answer:Having windows lock-out after time (requiring password) but not screensaver

I've not seen this done outside the screensaver options, but this link has another option.

Reading more, I think what you really want is the screensaver option, but use the logon.scr with password enabled.

So I just installed Windows 8 on my system, and it was all going smoothly, until I got to installing Steam. After I clicked through a few menus, Steam finally started to install, but the progress bar never went up. If I tried to do anything else (Open task manager, stop the installation, etc...) everything would just lock up and I couldn't do anything.

At this point my only option was to restart, so I did just that. After about an hour of waiting for Windows to boot back up, I gave up and tried to do a system repair. This failed too, so I just re-installed Windows 8. I tried this 4 times. The first few times I thought it was because I might have had incorrect chipset drivers installed, but even when I did get the correct ones, it had the same issue.

At this point my only thought is that maybe I should do all available windows updates before I start installing steam? Otherwise, I'm out of ideas for getting this to work. It's also looking like this may be some sort of hardware failure, possibly ram?

So has anyone else experienced this, or do you have advice?

Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 ghz

I have an issue with my Vizio tv when trying to use it as a monitor for my computer where the computer thinks the screen is on when it is off and off when it is on. So when I turn my tv on the computer thinks it just turned off and the tv reads no input. If I reset my computer with the screen on it will then work and send a signal to the tv. This does not happen on my Sharp tv or Magnovox tv so I am assuming there is a problem with the Vizio tv but I am hoping I can solve it with the computer. I would like to force the computer to send a signal to the tv no matter what state it thinks the tv is in (off or on). Is this possible? I am using an hdmi output and the tv works fine with my comcast box using the same hdmi port.

Answer:Force screen output all the time?

Not knowing what kind of computer you have, all I can tell you is that I have a Dell Inspiron 620 desktop with HDMI out that connects fine to my 32" Vizio TV whether the TV is on or off when I power up the computer.

Set the DHCP options on your DHCP server for a time server. Specifiy one of your servers to sync to. Whenever a PC gets a IP from the DHCP server, it'll get the Time Server option and sync with it.

Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Thanks

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

h:mm
12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

hh:mm
12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

H:mm
24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

HH:mm
24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

Hi there,

Since I got my current PC I've had an issue where it would occassionally completely lock-up, i.e. completely still image on screen, mouse wouldn't move, and it also put out a buzzing sound through the speakers/headphones. The only option was to force shutdown and start it up again. But it didn't happen that often so I wasn't bothered by it much.

However since updating to Windows 8 it is now happening about 15 minutes into use every time I turn the PC on (but after rebooting doesn't happen again until the next time I turn it on), so I'm looking for a solution now.

Has anyone seen something like this, or got any advise?

Thanks.

WOW!! Exactly what I'm seeing!!!

Usually occurs within 15 minutes of booting. Once a day only. I've had the computer off over 8 hours one day and when turned on it didn't happen... only the FIRST boot of the day. Works fine on any reboots after?

I have gotten random different BSOD's too.

I've also had days at a time when this didn't happen? I did nothing at all to change anything either. Then it starts happening again?

Things I have tried though:

Removed ANY unnecessary programs I had. This computer started with Vista, upgraded to W7, then W8 (when it started happening) and now W8.1, so I did collect a lot of 'junk'.
Stopped AutoStarting anything I didn't really need or could manually start later.

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]
"SlideshowDuration"=dword:000493e0
(where the screen turns off after 5 minutes).

I have the formula to figure out what you need to calculate to insert after "dword" for the amount of time until the screen times out (goes black). Ask me for the formula... as long as the above works.

Thanks

Answer:Lock Screen Slideshow Time Out

Never mind. I went into the Registry and checked it out.

Yes, the same exact rules apply here like in Windows 8.1

Hi,

My errors are a freezing cursor - dead mouse on every other reboot ..and.. With file transfers from one HDD to another I will frequently get a system lockup of Windows (forcing me to reboot. hard reboot). My System is CLEAN of viri and trojan as wella s spyware. I Have WinXP Pro Sp2. Running Zone Alarm Pro v6, Eset NOD32 v2.5, Webroot Spysweeper (for coookies and alt scans), Spyware Doctor v.3.2.1.359 (resident), and Trojan Hunter v4 (also resident on boot). I am also booting and browsing with Pop-Up Stopper Pro. My Hardware? Abit NF7-S rev.2, Athlon 3200 Barton core, Best OCZ 400Mhz RAM (?) - 1Gb in dual channel, Audigy 4 Pro for sound. Latest drivers for all "to best of my knowledge" Any Helpers? :)

*More on the file tranfer lock-ups. The two other drives are Seagate drives and identicle. They're 300 Gb each... I have not reformated them since my last Windows reinstall - they were detected right off.

Could be Windows isnt seeing those drives for what they are?? Even worse, a bus problem?

Thank you in advance.

Hi, new to these forums, hope I don't break any rules or anything here.

Sony Vaio - Model: SVE141R11L
Product name: SVE14135CXB
Pre-loaded with Windows 8 x64
Intel(R) Core i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
6GB RAM w/ 900GB HDD space
Purchased in Navy Exchange last year (around July 2013)

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.

I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. However, my cursor was fully able to move around the screen, and my caps/num lock buttons work as they display the lights enabling/disabling them. The time when it was stuck was 8:03pm, but the clock was stuck on 7:55. But on the bottom of the front of the laptop, the HDD orange light is not lit up at all, which I believe suggest that the HDD is not reading/properly reading. Oddly e... Read more

Not a techie.  Can't get straight answer ANYWHERE.  New laptops tend to NOT have indicators on the keys.  Hoping Windows 10 has indicators that can be turned on and PROBABLY would show up in the tray at the bottom right of the screen.
I have heard of sites where such things can be downloaded but again NOT a techie, so I hesitate to go outside of Windows/Microsoft for downloads.  I do not know what download sites are safe or spoofs.

Please plain English ... i.e. go to settings etc.  Or just give me a Microsoft approved site for download.

So... Before anyone tells me to send it to Logitech for repairs, I should mention that there are none that I know of in my area, and I'm not willing to pay R300 (ZAR) postage to send a big box 600km away to get my wheel 'checked'. Other than that, it's already nearly 3 years old and way out of warranty...

Now, onto the finer details. The force feedback suddenly stopped working one day a few months back. There was no funny smell or smoke or unusual amount of heat, etc.. Anyways, long story short: I suspect the motor is the culprit here, I can't see any damage or burn marks on the IC boards..

A Google search for the details on the side of the motor returns nothing even remotely related to Logitech or electronics in general, so I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction here.

Markings on the side:

The * above is a symbol, almost like a logo, but I don't recognise it... I've redrawn it in Paint (see attached), perhaps someone else knows it...? Other than that, I've also attached a photo of the motor with a CD beneath it for a size reference.

I don't play racing games enough to warrant buying a new wheel, and everything else on the wheel still works, I simply don't have any force feedback and the wheel obviously doesn't center itself anymore (no springs, all done with the motor). If anybody can help point me in the right direction with looking for a way to either test / repair / replace this motor, I would be eter... Read more

Basically, I have some people that would jump at the chance to hop onto an Administrator's account due to the restrictions they have. That being said, even if I leave my notebook alone for 5 minutes, I want the darn thing locked.

Just due to the fact I personally like a couple of the new Vista screensavers, is there a way to both lock and immediately start the screensaver?

Answer:Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

Not sure why the screensaver would play into it, but whatever.

Set the screensaver to require a password on resume (even if the screensaver doesn't kick in automagically this is the proper setting), and press Windows+L anytime to lock the workstation immediately.

Hope this helps...

I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)

However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.

With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.

Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.

Answer:Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

Hello Crosspatch,

I suppose one way would be to disable screen saver password protection to prevent it from basically locking the PC and asking for a password when you resume from screen saver.
Screen Saver Password Protection -Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums
The only drawback is that you would then need to lock the PC when you do want it to be password protected when unlocking. If you like, the desktop context menu added by either tutorial below can help make it easier to lock the PC.

Not very descriptive, but so the computer goes.

Lets say I am updating a blog. And I refresh a number of times, once for each post.

Not always the same amount of refreshes, but eventually I get the spinner upper right, and the status bar says either 'Done' or 'Stopped'.

If I check email, first time fine. I close email. Over the next 2-5 hours, I open email again, close again, open again, Mozilla Thunderbird newest version, and it says cannot connect. The number of times it will work and then stop, varies.

To fix either, I reboot, no need to do anything else, and they work fine again.

I get the impression that if I have to connect to anything outside my home computer, this occurs. I haven't tried all software, but it happens with email, both browsers, and connecting to Everquest.

So it isn't just one type of site/server. Just anything outside my home computer. I'm the only user and admin.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

I am getting this exact error.........

Script: file:///C:/Users/A6/AppData/Roaming/IDM/idmmzcc5/components/idmhelper5.js:91"

this locks up my PC for several minutes and eventually lets me click stop script, but it returns again over and over.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled IDM twice but no cure.

How do I remove the Caps and Num Lock indictor for a Lenovo G50, that is running Windows 10?

Answer:Remove Caps lock/Num lock indicator? (Windows 10)

Hi Thisismyname01 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

On a similar G50 , this was resolved by uninstalling Energy Management .

Another steps that was advised :

1. Opening Control Panel >Program and Features>Uninstall a Program and look for Caps OSD or Lenovo OSD

2. On the display properties of the graphic card , you may also configure to "Show indicator for a few seconds" .

3. Disable hotkeys from the BIOS ( but this may change all other usable hotkeys ) . Lets's reserve it a last option.

Update us what works for you.

Hello everyone!

I am looking for information on a issue I have when I open Delta Force Task Force Dagger.

The game will actually open two instances of itself, I will be able to play in the one that pops up but when I click on the Exit button there is still a instance on the start bar. I have to maximize that then it goes back into the game which at that point I have to click the exit button again and then the program is closed.

I checked on Novalogic's web site support and even emailed them but no resolve either way.

Thanks in advance for any help!

My son has Dell Dimension computer running Windows Vista. He has recently had problems in that when he uses Word it appears that the Caps lock is on all the time. When he comes out of this and goes to his desktop if he tries to select another programme all the programmes on the desktop are highlighted. He runs Norton and it is not showing any problems. He has tried System restore and restore last known good configuration with no avail. Is this a virus and if so what caan be done.

Answer:Caps lock on all the time and selecting all programmes from, desktop

This may be a stupid question, but I've got to ask it... He does know how to turn caps lock off, right? If he's tried this and it still doesn't work, your description of the symptoms makes me think that there's something wrong with the caps lock key that's making the keyboard think it's being pressed. (I say that because, if you click on an item and then click on another item with the shift key pressed, the PC will select all the items between the two items clicked on - which is what seems to be happening when he clicks on shortcuts on the desktop.)

Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. Hello,
First I want to point out that the "Play a slide show on the lock screen" is not the option that I'm looking for, since it remembers the original image that was set for the lock screen after I log back in, or restart the computer.

I am looking for an option that will always load a random picture from a certain folder to appear as my lock screen, every time the lock screen appears.
So for example, I turn on the computer and I see Image #1. I log into my account and after a few minutes I lock the computer. When I lock the computer, I want to see Image #7 as the lock screen. Now I restart the computer. Windows shuts down and starts up again. I am now at the lock screen again. I want to see Image #4. (The reason why those image numbers are like that is because they're random).

So does anyone know of an option in Windows that can do that, or a 3rd party program that can do that?

Thanks so much

Answer:Set A Random Image Every Time The Lock Screen Appears

It costs $1.99 but it sounds like exactly what you asked for:

TrendMicro suggested that the version of the scan software we are running was old; I downloaded the latest version and installed it on one machine and it locked up immediately. I have disabled the automatic scanning for the time being but need tor resolve this before any users contract a virus.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I am not quite sure where to start...as it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

Hello,

Right click on your Desktop and click on Personalise. Click Screensaver in the new window. In the Screensaver window, uncheck "On resume display logon screen", click OK and the problem should be fixed!

Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Hey guys, I have been having a pretty major dilemma with my computer. So basically:
A few days ago (January 11, 2018), I downloaded the new windows update (forget the name every time ). It was initially working out quite well. Fast forward to like four o' clock, when I leave home for a few hours. I then come back to my computer, awakening it from its sleep, and then the lock screen is utterly broken. It appears as a white screen with red and green (maybe blue too???) lines running to and fro. My cursor as well appeared as a jumbled mess of black pixels. I have been dealing with this dilemma for the past few days (today is January 16 2018 at time of writing), and I have had no luck searching for help. If you have any knowledge of what is happening, or can offer help, then please offer it, that will be wonderful.
EDIT: Oh, forgot to include this, but I have tried a malwarebytes scan (probably at January 12, 2018), but it did not come up with anything important.

I regularly use the 24 hour time format for all of my systems.
Its not a major issue I have now with Win10, but its annoying a bit.

Before I logon to Windows 10, the default lock screen theme has the time in 12 hour format instead of the 24 hour format.
In Windows, I set everything in 24 hour time. Period. I just don't like 12 hour time.
However, when I sign out or just by locking my screen, it does show the time in 24 hour format.
But when I reboot my system it shows the time in 12 hour format.

Is this a bug or what in Win10?

The screen lock comes up after a few minutes even though I am running development tools in the VM. I went to display settings, and in Power and sleep and modified the screen turn off and sleep to 45 minutes. But that did not resolve the issue. I would like to have the screen up indefinately. What setting do I need to adjust please? I do not know if it is a sleep mode, or the screen saver, or something else. I hope I am describing the issue with the right words.

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Here's the weird part.. when I press Num Lock ( function key + scroll lock ) the LED turns on! I already tried a system recovery, it didn't solve the issue. Is there something wrong with my BIOS? Any help from you guys will be highly appreciated.. thanks!

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS.  If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

For some time now, i have been experiencing that my Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking) all at the same time, I tried to google it but i can not find any solutions or explanations for it.

Does anyone know if it is bad? and what is causing this?

I am having a wired keyboard with nothing fancy just a standard issue Logitech keyboard.

Answer:Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking)

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Hi,
I have assigned more than enough RAM for a virtual machine (W7 64 bit guest in Vmware Workstation); 32 GB.
There is no problem but sometimes I notice too much disk activity and CPU usage because of some "heavy" applications.
I wonder if there is a way to force Windows use more RAM to cache applications or related files etc..

I tried to decrease swap memory (even disabled) but didn't help much.
I checked prefetch service and it is running
I increased min. memory for SQL server and other applications' spesific settings, but that didn't help too much either

I appreciate any ideas like some registry settings, fine tunings to maximize RAM usage and minimize disk usage etc.. Or maybe more "low level" settings in registry like disk read/write parameters, cache/block sizes..
Thanks in advance..
Cemo

Answer:Force windows to use more RAM

I forgot to mention average memory usage;
It is generally 30% and max 60%.
I have never seen it goes more than 60% even under heavy load.
That is why I am trying to force Windows to use more RAM and less disk.

Is there anyway to force Windows XP to use different network adaptors to accomplish different tasks?

I have a hard line for accessing my internet locally and would like to use wireless to access my server that's in a part of the house that cable can't be routed to easily. Everytime I try to access the server, the controller that handles my local internet access attempts to access the server and of course, it can't. The only way to currently access the wireless server is to go into the device manager and disable my onboard NIC's and leave the wireless functioning. When I do this, I can access the server perfectly. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:Anyway to force Windows XP....

Add a static route for the server's ip address to go through the wireless interface

Command line in windows xp, using route command. Look it up on google, it's been a while since I did it on a windows box.

Is there a way to force SFC /SCANNOW command to run even if there is a system repair "flag" set ? I keep getting "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart ..." . The problem is that i cannot boot into windows normally and
keeps reseting, and giving me the option to boot normally or start a system repair , which can't do a thing.
I tried Safe Mode and it hangs up and resets at CLASSPNP.SYS . I disabled autoreset and i get a BSOD with an error concerning the verification of a "KnownDLL" that ended with failure.
Tried running Repair > CMD > SFC  from Repair disc, tried running from ERD commander > CMD , or the SFC shortcut with same result. I've installed the hdd on another system , booted with the Win7 of that computer and tried running SFC /Scannow
/Offbootdir=xxx /offwindir=xxx  , and got same message.

Hi,

I need to force/run IE 7 on windows 7 - I know IE 7 is not compatible with windows 7 but surely there is a way to force this to happen?

I have removed IE8 as per instructions here How to uninstall Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 (kinda) | Windows 7 Center

But now I want to install IE7 - I have downloaded IE 7 for winxp - but it wont allow me to install, saying its not supported on IE7.

I then downloaded Internet Explorer 7 optimized for Google Download Internet Explorer 7 optimized for Google - it got further than the above download but when I restart I cannot find it anywhere, and it doesnt seem to be able to run....

I need IE7 to test software which at this point in time has only been optimised for IE7....please help!

Thanks

Within the past 24 hours, I've detected and isolated a rootkit on a Windows 10 system attached to MpKsl2ad74297.sys in the Windows Defender Definition Update folder, which cannot be purged due unless the Windows Defender Service is disabled.

Searches are not netting me accurate results - how do I disable the Windows Defender Services via CMD to purge the obstinate file? "net stop windefend" results in a System error 5 - Access is denied.

Thanks!

Answer:Windows 10 - Force Stop Windows Defender Service (rootkit)

Should be done like this...

sc config "Name of Service" start= disabled
sc stop "Name of Service"

Two things: you don't need the quotes and the space after start= is important.

Windows 10 won't install on my machine because it has a compatibility issue with my Nvidia GTX 780m graphics card. There are signed drivers for my gfx card available on the Nvidia website, which I have downloaded.
It there a way I can force Windows 10 to install, overriding the issue it has with the gfx card?
Before anyone suggests, I'm not removing the gfx card because it's in an Alienware laptop.
TIA

I have Win8.1 and did not want to update to Win10 until near the end of the free upgrade period. Now it appears as Windows 10 is forcing a upgrade as it has moved into the Windows Updates without me agreeing to upgrade. I have Windows Auto Updates turned off. I do install all critical windows updates.

Up until now I have been able to ignore the Win10 upgrade download and choose critical windows updates. As of a few days ago if I I try to do a Windows Update then Windows 10 starts to download. I have to cancel updates to stop it.

I will most likely want to upgrade to Win10 later but I do not want to right now. I don't have time right now for any unforeseen problems that might arise with the upgrade. I don't want to make adjustments that will remove the option for a later free upgrade. How do I stop it from downloading for now but leave the option of downloading later, most likely just before the free upgrade period ends.

From what I have read this is happening to lots of people and there are a lot of suggestions out there but I'd rather get advice from the Geeks here at MG.
Thanks!
