Pinning documents to taskbar instead of programs

Question: Pinning documents to taskbar instead of programs

I am trying to pin a document to the taskbar. However, what gets pinned is the program that opens the document and not the document itself, so instead of just clicking on the icon to open the document I need to right click on it and then select the document.

Is there any way to pin the document itself so that clicking on the icon will open the document?

Preferred Solution: Pinning documents to taskbar instead of programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently something happened with my Windows 10, as I am not able to pin any PowerPoint documents to the taskbar (I still can pin the icon of the app) and can't see recent documents. Here's the result when I right-click on the icon ("Recent" and "Pinned" menus disappeared):

I would like the menu to look like the result of right-clicking on the Excel's icon (with "Recent" and "Pinned" menus; file names blurred on purpose):

How can I re-enable this kind of menu for PowerPoint?

Since Win7 does not seem to have the 'All Programs', it is a little clumsy to e.g. pin programs to the taskbar. Right now I do it via the program files. Is there an easier way??

Answer:Pinning programs to taskbar

Yes, open start menu, and type the name of the program you want. Right-click it, select advanced, and pin to taskbar.

I installed Word 2013 onto a new computer some time ago. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Pinning has never worked. I can drag, I can right click and select pin, I can do whatever I want, but nothing appears and it just stays blank. Neither do recently opened items show up on a right click of the icon. Pinning/recent items works on everything else (e.g. Adobe, Explorer), including Outlook. I tried reinstalling but it still wouldn't work. I couldn't find much to go on so I gave up and have done without pinning. Recently I turned on "store and display recently opened items in the start menu and the taskbar" and suddenly I was given another clue as to what the issue is - Excel still shows nothing BUT in Word's recent items I'm getting *Adobe* files (see screenshot, file names removed for privacy): http://i.imgur.com/3wOOU60.png) I can pin adobe files to word's icon. I googled again and I still don't see anything about this but I'm just wondering if anyone has come across this and can help. Thanks in advance!

Question: Pinning to taskbar

Not a huge issue more of just something i was curious about, why cant the "computer" desktop icon be pinned to the taskbar? I know that it is possible to pin the windows explorer but i want it to have the computer icon or at least the c drive icon.

Answer:Pinning to taskbar

I haven't found the reason why it's not possible to pin the Computer icon to the superbar. Maybe it's because it belongs in the explorer - who knows. You can pin it, though, if you really want to. There are some guides already posted around here somewhere. You basically create a shortcut, then point that shortcut to where the My Computer icon points to, then pin it to the superbar.

Question: Pinning To Taskbar

Hi All

I am new to windows 8 but have been finding my way around, One problem I am finding is that some websites I visit to "Pin To Taskbar" seem to only show a blank icon! No name but text but when you change the text it doesn't change on the icon? strange one particular site is the Nationwide bank page cannot seem to get an icon with a name on it?

Anybody got any ideas as to why this happens on only a few sites?

cheers!

Answer:Pinning To Taskbar

Hello Gatewaya, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It depends on what favicon is used by the site for what icon the URL shortcut will have on the middle of it's page icon. I have a icon for Nationwide bank for me, so you might see if deleting your temporary internet files and history and reloading the site may help.

If you like, you could also pin the site in the jump list of the browser's icon on the taskbar.

Hi guys, I'm having a serious problem here. I wanted to add a folder to my windows explorer pinned folders so that I can right click on the windows explorer icon on the taskbar and have my popular folders right there. When I first setup windows 7, I did this by right clicking on the folders I wanted and clicking "Pin to Taskbar." Now, when I right click on folders, there is no such option. Even libraries only have the option to "Pin To Start Menu" which is strange because I had already pinned a library to the windows explorer icon on the task bar, which means that must have been an option before because I don't know how else I would do it. Can someone please explain to me how I can add more folders to the windows explorer icon? This is very frustrating

Answer:Pinning To Taskbar??

Drag folder to the explorer icon on taskbar and it will be pined there.

Hi,

I'm currently having a problem where pinning any kind of shortcut to the taskbar via its context menu doesn't do anything. That is, a pin doesn't appear on the taskbar, and in the location '%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar' no shortcut file is created.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Professional from Windows 7 Professional. That may be the cause.
Another potential factor is that previously, I have followed this guide (using both methods described) in order to further customize my system. The reason I mention that is because in researching I read the answer posted here. Unfortunately, I have not been able to fix the problem by undoing the first method of that guide; also there is no way to undo the second method of that guide, and I have been unsuccessful in fixing the problem by following the solution that answer describes (I couldn't find the 'Inkfile' folder). By the way, is it wrong that the 'link' key I deleted in following the process to undo the first method hasn't reappeared after restarting?

I'm not sure what to try next.
I would really appreciate some help... sorry to be foolish enough to try and customize my system a bit, if that is what caused this issue.
For now, I guess I'll have to use shortcut toolbars on my taskbar. Or is there a registry location where I can at least go in and, say, add a key with a shortcut address and icon address to add a pin with those properties?

Thanks in advance,
Felewin

I know about the tutorial explaining what to do using the toolbar method, but I don't like the separator between the Recycle Bin and the rest of the icons. There is another recommended method of pinning the Recycle Bin by creating a shortcut and using shell:recyclebinfolder, but this stopped working. In fact, all my folder shortcuts I created and pinned to the taskbar by using explorer.exe in the target stopped working.

Is there any other working methods out there so that I can put the Recycle Bin icon anywhere I want on the taskbar without seeing the separator?

Unfortunately, you cannot pin a shortcut to the taskbar. What you can do is pin your web browser whatever it is to the taskbar and then pin the shortcut to the browsers jump list. I installed Windows 7 recently and am finally making it look and behave the way I like except for one thing I would appreciate help with.

You see, I'm on dial-up... Don't laugh it's still the only thing available where I live.

When I had Windows Vista and before that I always had shortcut icon in my taskbar I could click on to connect or to check the state of my connection. Now I have to click on the Network Sharing Center in the right hand corner, and it takes me 3 more clicks before I'm finally connected. I have to go through the same routine to check if I'm still connected or what speed I connected at. Also, I don't always manage to connect on the first try so I have to go through that routine many times. I did manage to create a shortcut by opening Adapter Settings and creating one from there but the problem is Windows 7 wont let me pin that shortcut to the taskbar. I don't know what is worse... Having to go through the 3 or 4 cliks to connect, or having to stare at that huge dial-up shortcut all the time on my otherwise pristine desk top? Oh, and thanks for the little file that allowed me to remove the Libraries Icon from my desktop. Was really happy to find that little gem.

Any suggestion with my current problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,

First post here and thanks for allowing me to be a part of the community!

My first question is while attempting to pin a website to the task bar in Edge I followed the directions and selected the "3 dots menu" and then selected "open with IE" option as instructed.

When I click on the webpage icon in the task bar the site indeed comes up but it is in Internet Explorer rather than Edge. Is there any way I can pin the site to the task bar and have it launch in Edge rather than IE? I understand it opens in IE because I opened the website in Edge and then told it to open with IE.

When I tried pinning the tab to the task bar in Edge I got the universal red circle with the line through it so I couldn't pin it unless I opened it in IE.

Ive noticed when I pin a website to the Start Menu that it will open in Edge. Is it not possible to have this happen by using the task bar?

Thanks so much for your help.

Appreciate interacting with you folks very much.

best,

rick

Something weird has happened to my taskbar. I have a few programs pinned there and everything was okay. Then today I unpinned Firefox from there because I wanted to change the icon I was using. After deciding I didn't like it I tried to go back to the one I was using but when I pinned it back to the task bar this problem occurred:

As you can see when I click on the silver Firefox icon, it opens up a new firefox icon (default icon) in a separate place, taking up unnecessary space. I can't figure out how to make it go back to the way it was where everything stayed within the silver icon.

Answer:Strange problem with pinning an icon to taskbar

It is indeed the browser being opened but the problem is it used to open up within the silver icon (the default firefox icon you see to the right has basically taken its place). It's a bit of an annoyance because it takes up the little space I have on my taskbar before things start getting combined and messy.

Sorry if what I'm explaining is confusing, it would probably be easier to show with a video or something.

Sergey Tkachenko has created quite the number of programs for Windows 7 and Windows 8 that tweak various functionalities. To name a few: Skip Metro to bypass the start screen on logon, Close Threshold to close Windows 8 apps comfortable or Taskbar Pinner to pin anything to the taskbar.

AutoPin Controller takes care of another issue that you may experience when using the Windows 8 operating system. Whenever you install software on Windows 8, shortcuts are added to the start screen of the operating system. This may be handy considering that the start screen is the new start menu of the operating system, but sometimes also inappropriate if you do not want a program to add one or multiple shortcuts to the start screen.

While you won?t see as many shortcuts as on the ?All Apps? page of the system, it may still be something that you do not desire, for instance if you prefer to have full control over what gets added where on the start screen.

Windows 8 offers no built-in option to block program installations from adding shortcuts to the start screen. That?s where AutoPin Controller for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro comes into play (you can?t install desktop applications on Windows RT).

While it does not provide you with a permanent on or off switch, it is still noteworthy because it is a first. You need to run the program and select the ?Lock Pint to start screen feature? to block any program from adding shortcuts to the system?s start screen. Once you have made ... Read more

I CAN get down to it if I minimize the windows on top of it but it's a hassle to continually do this in the middle of my work. Using System Restore is a problem for me because I have very poor eyesight, and when I tried to do this, here in Win 8.1, the Windows magnifier went crazy, and I had to abort the whole thing.I'm starting to worry because there are other little things going wrong in the OS. I may just have to figure out a way to use SysRestore, "blind!" before the whole computer just explodes or something!Any help with this will be very much appreciated. :)

Answer:How to fix taskbar! It's buried under the documents!

I wonder if uninstalling Classic Shell and re-installing it might get you out of this hole.I'm using Win 8.1 myself but stitched it up my own way without feeling the need to invoke the old start menu. I can't therefore comment about Classic Shell settings from personal experience. Most things are in the same (or similar) old places as they were in the W95 days but I accept that unearthing them might not be so easy if your eyesight is poor. What sort of other little things are going wrong?Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi All,

Could you please advice me regarding the following problem:

When I connect to Windows 2003 Terminal Server (RDP), and launch two excel documents - I see one taskbar shortcut only. The problem is that the user expects two taskbar shortcuts in such case (he uses them in order to toggle between the documents).
How can I make Excel (and any other Office application) to display as many task bar shortcuts as the number of open docuements in RDP session?
I have heard that it might be resolved by using certain registry key. Do you know which reg key may fix this?

Thanks,
Udi

I don't know if this is the right forum for this. I went on the internet and as soon as my home page came up everything disappeared. All I was left with was the picture I had on the desktop. The taskbar was gone so I shut it off & restarted. When it did a disk check all kinds of things came up & when it finally started the taskbar was still missing as well as all my documents, pictures, settings, favorites, ect. My entire user account disappeared! I right clicked on the taskbar area and pulled up part of the start menu but I can't access the system tools to try a restore point. It is no longer in the start menu. I tried going in my wife's user account but same problem. At least all her documents are there. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I was wondering if you could help. My friend's computer has recently become very, very slow in starting up and when it loads it shows all icons except for My Computer and My Documents, and the Start Menu including taskbar and time. Is there any way to restore these? Ctrl Alt Del kinda kills it.

It's rather full (2.2gb left from 74.4) but he's now deleting some files. Would you like a HijackThis report to ensure it's not a virus? Did a scan on McAfee and it's clean, checked CMOS/BIOS settings and it's not hot or overclocked. Any help'd be appreciated, if you need to know anything else about the computer ask away, it'd be great if you could help. :)

Answer:XP not showing explorer.exe taskbar, My Computer/My Documents

I had this problem before, and it was a virus. In fact, it was a trojan.
Every time I would reboot or start my computer it wouldn't show the desktop at all. So I would have to open task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL),
close explorer.exe ,and run explorer.exe, which usually does the trick.

There's always system recover, that is, if you have the disk.
And if you're worried about your data I would suggest buying a storage device or blank CD's or Dvd-R's and saving them there. But only save valuable data, like irreplaceable things such as photos, and so on. Music can be downloaded later, and programs too. Take as many as screenshots too. But that's what I'd do.

If I opened several Word files, they would appear side by side in the WIndows 7 taskbar. But now only one tab appears - and I have go to the menu to get to other open Word files - very annoying. I've clicked on Combine when taskbar is full - so they shouldn't combine when the task bar is not full. Any way to return this to normal - where two or three would appear side by side in the taskbar - before combining?~ Thanks

Answer:Word documents combine in Taskbar - stopping it

Rightclick on free space at the taskbar, choose properties and set it to never group.

Every time I click on an Icon in the task bar it opens the documents folder. Every time I click on an icon in the control panel, the documents folder opens. I thought it might be the file associations, but I don't know how to reset anything like that.

Answer:My icons, taskbar items all open the Documents folder

Must be some OS corruption. Run system file checker and DISM. Use our FixWin. It has buttons to run these two scans with a click.

Hi all,

My problem is that I cannot drag an Excel/Word file from the Recent window (right-click on Task bar icon) into an Outlook email. I could do this in Win 7 but now my work has upgraded and I seem to have lost this amazing shortcut...

I cannot find a solution, just that this feature was removed in Win 10.. Surely there are others with a similar issue to me?

Kind regards,

Karl

Answer:Cannot drag recent/pinned documents from the Taskbar into New Email

To be honest, I had not realised this was possible. Now I know, I can see how useful it is. Please add this as a request in the Feedback app to Microsoft.

You can still drag files from within a file explorer window but not from the recent files list of the taskbar icons or start menu items. Perhaps others can comment if there is a work around for this.

Hello again

I'm having a weird problem. Suddenly, whenever I search for a document of any kind (xls, docx, pdf, doesn't matter), using the Taskbar Search, the document will open in File Explorer when i click it, rather than the program that's supposed to open it.

For example, I'll search for "Invoice", and it will bring up all the files (no problem with actual search), but they won't have the Excel icon next to them, rather they have a Blue monitor icon, and when I click one, Explorer opens.

I've checked file associations, and they are fine. Also, if I click a file in File Explorer itself, the correct program opens.

Thanks for the help!

I have been noticing that whenever I open up existing TXT documents, I get them all referencing the same Notepad icon in the Taskbar; this is the way it is supposed to work. However, if I open up the Notepad application from scratch to get a new document, an additional Notepad icon in the Taskbar is generated, to which that new document reference. Additional new documents also reference this additional icon, so at most I only 2 icons.

This is unacceptable as real estate on the Taskbar is scarce. I would like for all Notepad documents to reference the same, solitary Notepad icon. How do I fix this?

All documents seem to be running Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.318)

Answer:Opened documents for Notepad reference 2 icons in Taskbar

I can't reproduce that behaviour, I only ever have one icon. The only way I can think that this is happening is if you have a default app setting for TXT documents which is different to Notepad but has the same icon. In this way it looks the same but is actually different. You can check your default app settings with the "Choose default apps by file type" option (find via the search box if you do not know where it is).

Also when I right click on a program and try to "pin to start menu", there is no option for that, only the shortcut option.

What's up with these things?

So I upgraded to Windows 10 and reverted back to Windows 7. And now my pinned / recent documents aren't showing on the taskbar icons.

For example, I have Excel on the taskbar icons. Before the upgrade, I was able to view recently opened documents and even pinned them to the icons which I can view by simple right clicking the icons on the taskbar.

How do I get this back?

Example: PS doesn't show my pinned or recent items. Excel does.... Word doesn't.

Hello,

I am working on a computer where the user lent their machine to someone else for the weekend. When it was returned many major files after 2008 were missing, and some important programs gone (they do not remember the name of the programs).

The first things I thought were, either they were deleted, or a system retore took place. I used the freeware program "Recuva" and found some of the users music and pictures. However no documents could be found.

I don't beleive it's due to malware or any sort of virus, and there seems to have been no system restore that took place. I'm running out of ideas and really need to help this person out.

Answer:computer won't open programs or documents

The iPod is not infected, you do not have to worry about that (unless you ran a program off the iPod which in tern was infected which is highly unlikely if you are using for nothing but music or videos).Try updating to the latest drivers, maybe that may help.

Answer:Missing Programs, Features and documents.

Hi George,

note that it would be ideal to stop using that harddisk. Every writing access to that disc will reduce chances of recovery, should your files have been deleted. If I should guess, from what you write, I fear your files might have been deleted by Windows.

For the removed programs, which suddenly are back again, I cannot explain that. It is possible to produce such kind of situation by doing a system restore. However, a system restore does not happen all by itself. Apart from that a system restore would keep user files ontouched - at least as long as they are kept at appropriate locations.

The Recent Items folder normally does not contain actual files, but it only contains shortcuts pointing to your files. Are there still some of the broken shortcuts in that folder? When you look at these shortcuts, please do a right click on some of them, then for each select "Properties", "Shortcut" and then have a look at the field "Target". Like so: http://cdn9.howtogeek.com/wp-content...2/sshot271.png

What does it tell you in these fields?

Assuming you keep backups of your business data restore from there. If you do not keep backups you can try data recovery software (e.g., Recuva Portable, Restoration.exe) or a data recovery service. Do a web search for services or for more powerful programs.

If this is your main or only computer I advise that you go back to Windows 7 or 8.1 or whatever you were using before Windows 10.

am hoping someone may be able to piont me in the right direction... i have 30+page document that is to be scanned.

once that's been accomplished, the hope is that it can be converted from an image file to a text file, with the the aid of a scanned text recognition/conversion program.

the question then is this: anyone able to recommend a shareware/freeware program of this nature?

thanks for taking the time to look at this query.

Answer:Scanned Documents & Text Recognition programs

MS Office XP has such a program but it doesn't work the greatest depending on what is scanned.

I have found that it will take "c" "l" and get confused and think it is a "d" and have to go through the document and make the corrections. Most of the time it is a lot of corrections and not worth the trouble.

About 3 months ago i noticed files on my harddrive that were not familiar to me. Mostly recycle bin's with an ? at the beginning and end of them. Then i noticed as i would shut down the computer, it would be downloading and installing updates i was unaware of. I checked my settings and auto install was not selected. i did a system restore and found files missing i didn't even know were gone. So i took it a step further and ran a program for lost or deleted files and was blown away to find about 40 gigs worth of stuff i didn't realize was missing because my hard drive space hadn't changed. Well somewhere along the way i triggered whatever was in my computer and it woke up fighting mad. I was locked out of files and directories. I no longer had an administrator account, but rather had administrator privileges still. Insteads of three profiles i now had one. I have been fighting this for so long and have used so many different programs to find, fix, fight this its rediculous.
I finally started to use reformatting as my weapon of choice to just start fresh. Well that got old after the tenth time. Long story longer...i don't know what it is. I found traces of remote access to and from my computer. i've found traces of commands to delete my files and replace with other stuff. I don't know what else to do, so i'm here asking for help.

Answer:HD space, documents and programs disappearing rapidly.

Does anyone have any ideas about what this might be? I would really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

But i have quite a few things programs and settings and emails and all sorts of other things in my Windows and i don;t want to do a fresh installation. So if i just install Professional Edition over Home Edition will it be ok..? Has anybody done it..? what are the chances of failure.? and any guide available ..

Answer:HowTo upgrade from XP HE to XP Pro without loosing my programs documents and emails

In the past when I've Reinstalled Windows over another Windows XP install, I couldnt access the old user accounts and basically it was like starting over. If you have the upgrade edition, I think that might work. If not, I would strongly recommend you backup everything you deem important and then give it a try, hope this helps a lil.

Hi There,

I recently had the 'hello4' virus on my computer and I think i successfully removed it using SuperAntiSpyware. I am running XP professional. My problem now is that nothing on my computer works:

- Unable to open pdf documents. Get the message ' There was an error opening this document. Access denied'
- Unable to open any office documents. I get the message: 'unable to access ...xls/doc etc. The document may be read-only or encrypted'
- Unable to open OutLook. I get the message 'You do not have permission to access the file ....outlook.ost.
- Unable to open many of my other work-related programs. Get different errors but mainly along the lines of access denied, or no permission.
- Unable to copy any of my documents onto an external harddrive or USB. I get the message 'cannot copy xxxx. Access is denied'. On the flip side, I am able to open pdf and microsoft office documents from external storage devices.
- Unable to attach any documents to my web email (yahoo & gmail). I get an error message and it doesn't attach. I am able to download documents off the internet and open them on my computer and save them to my external USB drives.

I realise my computer is probably screwed and needs re-formatting but I need to find a way to backup all my important documents before I do so. I have tried doing a system restore to a previous good point but I'm unable to select any date before I erased the virus.

Please help!

For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. I'm running Windows XP Home. Yesterday I was playing a game and I noticed some sudden gameplay and graphic glitches. I uninstalled and reinstalled, but still had the same problems. I had the exact same problems with another game I tried. Then my computer started to run very slowly and suddenly I couldn't move my desktop icons. The most annoying problem is that absolutely no program shows up on the taskbar and any program I minimize disappears. I tried Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! and got the following error message, "run-time error '462' the remote server machine does not exist or is unavailable". I tried three different system restore points, all of which failed. Is there anything I can do to fix all of this? Thanks for any help.

Today I lost my quick launch Google Chrome in the task bar.
When I tried to replace it, it would not allow me. I tried to pin
other programs and could not get any to work. I also opened
the program(s) and from the task bar right clicked the program
while in the task bar, but there was no option to pin. I did the
same by going to the start menu, again no option to pin.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Can anyone help. every time i open a program it does not show up in the task bar. the only time i can swith between programs is by using the task manager. can anyone help.

thanks

Answer:No Programs in taskbar

If the programs you use have icons on the desktop, just drag the icon to the taskbar and drop it in an open area to the left of the double line or between existing generic icons. That will not remove it from the DT. You can also drag and drop the TB icons so as to rearrange their order across the bar, as well as delete any you decide you do not need by using the right click menu.
