Windows 7 Explorer -- Change how "+" displays folders in the left pane

Question: Windows 7 Explorer -- Change how "+" displays folders in the left pane

I click on the "+" beside the icon of a drive or folder near the bottom of the left pane of my Windows 7 Explorer. If the list of sub folders that opens is longer than the distance to the bottom of the pane, the lower icons become hidden. Those subfolders extend "below" the pane -- out of view. I want the contents of the pane to shift upward so that all the sub folders of interest are visible -- like on my XP computer and my win98 computer?

Is there a way that I can fix this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Stan,

It sounds like you want to turn on the Automatically expand to current folder option for this.

Hi,
is this possible?
I currently have things like Favourites, Libraries, and Homegroup (all of which I don't care for). Not sure what that folder pane is actually called, so not sure what to search for.
I just want an expanded folder tree of My Computer.

Any suggestions?
thanks

[edit:
Favorites - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane for Favourites apparently. still not sure about libraries or homegroup]

Libraries Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
for Libraries
ok, at least it's searchable now that I know it's called navigation pane]

Answer:Change/remove entries in "Folder view" pane (left side of Explorer)

I'm not sure why one would do this. Right click on what ever you don't want and select delete. Be very sure you want to do this. Those things do no harm being there.

I'm having a problem with Windows Explorer. Every time I connect a removable drive, the Folders panel displays a duplicate set of "Shared Documents, <username>'s Documents, and 2 other entries." It even happens when I plug in my phone to charge through the USB port. Basically, it happens when something is connected in the USB port, card reader, removable drive, ect. Please look at my screen shot and you will understand.
I think it has something to do with a Motorola driver I recently uninstalled, but I don't remember which one.
I am using WinXP Pro.

It seems I can't post images.

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate dual booting with Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a Dell XPS 410. When I bring up Windows Explorer on the Desktop app, I would like to add several folders to the "Favorites" section of the navigation pane on the left side of the window, as I have done in Windows 7. However, I don't seem to be able to do it. I have tried dragging the folder in the right pane onto the Favorites link, as I do in Windows 7, but nothing happens; the folder is not added to the list (which, by the way, is empty.) I have also tried navigating to the folder I want to add to Favorites and then right clicking the Favorites link and selecting the option from the context menu of "add current location to favorites", but again nothing happens.

On the off chance that it might be a corrupted system file, I just finished doing a System File Checker with the SCANNOW option, but no problem was detected by SFC.

I wonder if this is a bug in the Consumer Preview? Has anybody else encountered this problem? I also would like suggestions for what else to try to correct the problem, if it seems to be a problem with my system but nobody else's...

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The left side of the control panel are Bitmaps #632 and 633 in the shell32.dll in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 after editing(put copies on your desktop and edit them did not get them mixed up) you will need to properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

Hi all,

I have been searching the web for an answer to this question since first getting Windows 10 last year. I would like my File Explorer to open using the "List" view rather than the current default of "Details". I have seen many responses that reference how to change the default view template from Documents to Music, Pictures, ..., but none that actually address this question. Is there a way to do this at all in Win10?

I'm thinking of changing Documents template for Details to remove all columns except for Name. The Details view as it currently has been useful in the past so I hate to lose it all together.

Am I SOL in my request? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Want to change File Explorer default View from "Details" to "List"

Open File Explorer, in the menu bar click view > choose your view (mine is medium icons)

To get the menu bar (if you don't have it showing) put the cursor in the top window bar, right click, click Menu bar. On mine it's the first choice.

If I right click on a drive, the menu comes up and "Search" is the in bold, indicating it is the default. How can I change this so it is no longer the default, but opening it up with "Open" as the default?

Hi! I have XP and a question. In Favorites, the icons that are next to the names, have all switched from their original icon pictures, to either the icon for IE, or to a plain Folder. I did not change these and liked it when I could easily distinguish each item (link...whatever they are called), by its icon. Now they all look the same, more or less. Can anybody tell me why this icon switch occured? And more importantly, how to get these icons back to how they looked before, with the individual icons? And...how to get them to stay that way and not be changed again. Thank you...sure don't know how I managed to do this one... ...your help is very appreciated!! parrotplay

Beneath the quick access list in navigator, all I have is 'desktop'. Everything else is under that. But all the pics I've seen of windows 10 show 'this PC' as the top level link. I would much prefer that. "desktop' ends up being twice in the tree, and removable media twice as well. Well, actually desktop is right inside my user folder too!

Back in Win 7, "Computer" disappeared from my explorer navigation pane. Did several repair/installs, but all of them failed. Also tried the registry fix described in SevenForums, which also failed.

After upgrading to Windows 8, "Computer" is still missing from the navigation pane. Tried the registry fix described in EightForums (Computer - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8 Explorer), which failed in several attempts.

I realize a clean install of Win 8 is probably required to fix this, but what I'd really like to know is what has been lost in the system that prevents restoration of "Computer" in the navigation pane.

I'd be grateful for any assistance in this.

You all know that there is no Folder-View settings that work on ftp folders. But Windows does remember your view setting for every folder you have previously selected a view.
I have over 1000 ftp paths that I have set to "detail view" on a workstation over the last 2 years.   This information is stored 'somewhere' and could probably be exported if I only knew.    A low value clue

Let's say I have a folder in my Documents somewhere called "thisisit".
Within "thisisit" folder, I have other folders, each named for a student in my class.

When I go to Start > Documents and navigate to "thisisit", I don't see any folders, but I do see all the files from all the folders. It's as if my computer took all the files from the folders, removed them from the folders and copied them into the parent folder "thisisit", and then deleted all the subfolders, named after the students.

However, if I navigate to that same "thisisit" folder, through a software like Photoshop or 3ds Max, I DO see all of the subfolders, which are named after the students.

This just happened in a moment. As in, I was navigating through the folders one moment, then I went to the parent folder a second later, and voila! no subfolders.

Anyone know what happened???

My media files are duplicated as well in Windows Media Player.

When you re-located these user folders, did you use the "Move..." button on the location tab, and then told Windows to move ALL files to the new location? Doing so will eliminate this "duplication" you are experiencing.

The information that I read from following your link says:

Change the location of each data folder (i..e Documents, Pictures, Music) individually using Windows explorer settings.Modify the Windows registry to reflect the new folder locationIf you used the "Move..." button, you should not have needed to manually edit the registry.

Hey there Geeks!

A problem here with AVG Free (this is a first!)

I am running the latest build of AVG (got it from MG http://www.majorgeeks.com/download886.html ) and have been using AVG for about a year. I ran update about an hour ago and noticed that in the main controls window an "!" is appearing in the "Virus Database" sub-window (screen shot attached.) The "Release Date" is 5/2/04 and when I attempt an update I get the message that my AVG system is up to date and no update file is neccessary...

I am running Windows XP Pro. Under "processes," I have avgserv.exe and avgcc32.exe running. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Heartfelt thanks in advance,

Hi. I'm thinking about repairing Windows 7Home Premium 32bit with the DVD, because of BSOD, but I hesitate.

I first need to know if the backup folder called "Windows.old" will be a COPY (keeps Date Modified but updates Date Created) or a CUT (simply moves all folders to an other, thus doesn't change Date Created). Thanks!
So of course, only those who have ever reinstalled Windows 7 may know the answer. If you don't know but have reinstalled Windows 7 at least once, please spare 30 seconds to check, simply find a file like a picture or music that you had before the reinstall, and see in the bottom bar of explorer if its Date Created is the original or the reinstall date. You can also click Display tab in Explorer, then Sort by > Others > check "Date Created", > OK > Click display again > Sort by > Date Created. Don't mistake with Date Modified, I know the original Date Modified is kept upon copying, but it will update if you modify the file obviously. Please be honest and double check, losing 5.9 years old dates of my past would be heartbreaking, like mixing the pages of my diary!

Date Created is very important to me (and is underrated because it's not the default sorting option unlike Name/Type/Date Modified) because my computer is 5.9 years old, now has thousands of files and folders and it's easy to find them back and organize them with Date Created sorting if I didn't write tags or description in the file name.
If it doesn't ke... Read more

Hi,
I would like to change "Windows Explorer" dafault white backgroup color without losing the Aero theme feature in Win7.  I know it can be done in a classic theme by changing the "window" color".  Could someone kindly help
me out?  I searched the Internet and found some sites mentioning downloading programs, which I hesitate to trust due to potentially hidden virus.  I don't mind using regedit to change the registry.  Any hint is much appreciated.

Answer:How to change "Windows Explorer" dafault white backgroup color without losing the Aero theme feature?

Hi JD,

It seems the Windows Explorer background color cannot be changed in Windows 7. However, you can see if third party software such as
XYPLORER can achieve this.

Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
regarding this product's performance or reliability.

Also, you can change other window color by right clicking the desktop ->
Personalize -> Windows Color -> Advanced appearance settings… -> pull down the Item to
Window and choose the color you like -> Click OK.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Linda

Hey folks,

I am currently trying to move "This PC" to the top of the navigation pane, or - alternatively - move the "Quick Access" to the very bottom.

Is there any possible way?

I have found (and used) ways for every other entry, but not those 2. I have even stupidly tried to apply the "SortOrderIndex" on random for both, without success.

Every input will be appreciated :-)

Cheers

Jan

File "Description" data fields etc. no longer appear in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane. Please see attachment.

Operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium, Version 6.0.6002, Service Pack 2, Build 6002.

ID3 tag data can be edited using MP3Tag editor, but is no longer available for edit in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane.

Any advice about how to restore the data fields in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane would be appreciated.

Hello everybody,

In Windows 7 how can I change "Folders View" for individual folders without changing them system wide. For example if I select "always show icons" all my folders are set this way, and that's fine. But there are a few folders I have containing jpeg images, and I want to view those as "thumbnails" without effecting the others which are set to always show icons.

This was very easy to do in Windows XP but I can't figure out how to do it in Windows 7. many thanks for any help.

Hi nikev216,

You can change the view with this little icon on the right side of the explorer bar.

You have to uncheck the "only show icons" options, or it won't work.

Guys

I'm not sure if I've posted the right at the right place, but still........ I want to know that "" How do I change the "Open Settings" found in the Computer tab of the File Explorer to "Open Control Panel" ""

I have a screenshot of that:
I want to change it because I have a habit of having that "Open Control Panel" there as in Windows 8.1 for the reason that the Settings is just an app reference to the original Control Panel and many advanced settings are referred to Control Panel.

And I'm lazy to type "Co" everytime in Cortana to open Control Panel.

Awaiting for replies.....

Answer:How do I change "Open Settings" in Explorer to "Open Control Panel"

Welcome to TenForums @Preetkaran

We have a tutorial for that...
Show Control Panel or Settings on Win+X Menu in Windows 10

But I haven't bothered. Instead I found Control Panel in the Start menu's 'All apps > Windows system' and pinned it to Start. The advantage of having it pinned to Start is that a right-click on the tile shows a 'Recent' jumplist for it, all your frequently used Control Panel settings in one convenient place.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Hello everyone,

I've run into an issue that I can't seem to find answer to on the net.

When I open My Computer, Control Panel or any folder no files or directories display, after first there is a green loading bar on the address bar and little magnifying glasses (searching icon) on the left side directories but never displays anything.

The files I can see in other folders are unable to be opened and have white blank page icons next to them.

I can still run application so I'm not sure what the issue is. I ran a scan for virus with nothing found and I have also ran a windows update but have not restarted my PC yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I have a problem that's driving me crazy and no idea how to begin to deal with it. Please forgive the length of this post. I just want to minimize going back and forth to provide details.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (legitimate license) on a 64-bit system. My laptop is an HP Pavilion G7-2022us.

For security, I run Microsoft Security Essentials, ThreatFire, Hitman Pro and WinPatrol in real-time mode (they have different functions and don't conflict with each other). My firewall is Windows native firewall. There are various other little monitors to prevent keylogging, webcam hijacking, etc. I have a variety of other file cleaning, anti-virus and malware software that is kept turned OFF (including processes) until I need to cycle through them one-by-one to do preventive maintenance (2 - 3X a year or whenever I'mexperiencing weird behavior or slowdowns).

I have an Orico USB3.0 powered hub in one port with six external hard drives attached (mostly WDs) and two charging phones. Another USB port holds a Logitech Nano Receiver. The third (and last) port is empty. Right now I access the internet through cable Ethernet.

I like to play with new programs and have a large number installed on my machine, but I haven't installed very much in at least a month, certainly nothing I have installed seemed to directly result in this strange behavior.

Answer:Frequent Explorer.exe Crashing Then Opens "libraries" Or "my Documents" Windows [long]

I really need some help here. It's hard to believe no one has one bit of insight into this.

Since I first posted I repaired the file associations for pdf, exe and lnk files. The former was causing issues when I moved pdfs into folders, but was not the cause of the main crashing, nor did it fix it.
Now I'm running the Tweaking.com Windows repair. It's in hour 32 on a 1TB drive and is still on Step 5 (Repair WMI). I have no idea if I can interrupt it or if doing so will screw things up further.

In the meantime am using 6 year old Android tiny keyboard phone to get things done and falling behind severely on work I need to do.

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

IBM T-40 laptop (about three and a half years old)
Microsoft XP-Professional

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Sandjosh

"dependency chain" "windows 7" internet "windows explorer"

At the time of this writing, this search in Google will produce one result at best. Am I searching the wrong things? I have tried a couple handfuls of variants, and I am coming up with zilch.

Though I am fairly well versed in Windows 7 from working on other people's machines, I decided to stick with good old XP because of one issue above all else. When I instructed my firewall to block Windows Explorer from accessing the Internet it completely cut me off from the Internet, no ifs, ands or buts. My understanding of why this is happened leads me to believe the dependency chain for Internet access goes through Windows Explorer. I have long had a habit of blocking my File Manager of choice access to the Internet because... well, it's a file manager! Admittedly, my one experience with Windows 7 on my own machine was a retired student version of Server 2008 R2, but as soon as I found out that was the case, I decided not to make the move to Windows 7 and went back to my XP installation. I believe I was using Sunbelt Personal Firewall at the time. I now use PCTools Free Firewall.

Is this still the case with Windows 7? Is there a workaround if it is?

I haven't tried to recreate this on another person's machine.

Hi KronKyrios, welcome to 7F!

I did find some very old information that may shed some light:

"Launch Browser Windows in a Separate Process" Setting Is Not Available in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5

You can go into Services and check:
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Network Connections
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Windows Management Instrumentation

R-click on each one, then Properties, then the Dependencies Tab.
You would have to cross check each one that is listed.

Hi
I have recently updated to the creator version
My files end up in unintended destinations. When I click in the documents tab in the sidebar of the documents screen, it takes me to a ?Documents? folder that appears in ?One Drive? group. Any files that I send from my desktop end up there
Those files are also shown when I open the first ?Documents? folder that appears in the ?Quick Access? group. I have similar problems with ?Pictures? folders
I have attached screen shots that I hope will explain. I want all my files of any description to end up in the ?Documents? folder contained in the ?This PC? group. Can anyone help please?
Incidentally, I don?t understand the purpose of ?One Drive?, and don?t believe that I will have a use for it. Can I remove/disable it?

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I've got an error at the moment that whenever I try and use the file dialog (e.g. save a new file, open a file, attach file to email etc), whatever application I'm using will crash.
This seems to have started ever since the Windows 10 Creator Update installed itself on my computer the other day.

I'm trying to figure out what is causing the crash, and I've noticed that in the File Dialog (that works perfectly fine in Microsoft Edge) there are now Camera and Photos options.

Here is a screenshot:

How can I disable them? They're not of much use to me being on a desktop, so I want to disable them as a first try to see if they're causing other applications to crash.

Thanks,
Denno

Answer:Remove "Camera" and "Photos" from left hand side of File Dialog

You can uninstall them if you wish - see Uninstall Apps in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Apps Features Tutorials

(Do have a look at the extensive Tutorial section - it contains a great deal of very practical and professional quality information)

Windows 10 Tutorial Index - Windows 10 Tutorials

Do you see Photos and Camera in traditional desktop programs' 'Save as' boxes too?

In general, though, it's not worth bothering to uninstall universal apps you don't need or use (I don't use them either).

Interestingly a change with the Creator's upgrade is that it doesn't reinstate previously uninstalled apps for hte first time.

Hello

I was wondering if anyone knows how to use the "Explorer.exe" to make sure to change the view of several directories (with subdirectories within them) ONLY.

I do not want to change the view of all directories.
I would like only 4 or 5 directories (and subdirectories) are visible in "Medium Icons" mode, and that the rest of my directories are in "Details" mode.

I can do but after some time (one hour ... one day .. one week ...) all my folders, including "Medium Icons" mode, are all Details mode.

I know we can change the mode for each directory, but it is much too long.
I want to change their directory AND subdirectories in one operation, without changing the view mode of the other directories.

The directories that I want to set "Medium Icons" mode is on the "Desktop" (Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate).

Thank you

While using "Windows Explorer" as an FTP client I have put the system into a state where any attempts to access an FTP folder from "Windows Explorer" produces the following dialog:
Dialog Title: "FTP Folder Error"
Dialog Icon: Information Icon
Dialog Text: "Windows cannot access this folder.  Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.  Details: No more Internet handles can be allocated"

I had used the "Add a network location" feature of "Windows Explorer" to add an FTP site.  The FTP folder appears under "Computer" in the left panel of "Windows Explorer."
It is not mapped to a drive letter.  I then initiated a large FTP transfer operation by using drag-and-drop from the FTP folder to a local folder.  A portion of the transfer completed as expected but after some time it produced the "No more Internet

After the initial error dialog is cleared with the OK button and the transfer is terminated I can then reliably reproduce the dialog.  Any attempt to open an FTP network location

Recently got a new machine with XP installed. When I copied some data folders and files from my old setup (95), I found they were no longer listed in the same order. The folders and files all have numerical titles representing the date of the data,i.e,
folders for any given year use the month and day numbers as title (mmdd format} and the data files in a given folder use the time as title (hhmm 24hr format). The problem is that XP Explorer ignores any leading zeros in the title, i.e., it sorts the list numerically. My data collection program drops all trailing zeros to save storage space so files for the sequential times 0230, 0630, 2100 are named 023, 063, 21 and then are listed in the numerical order of 21, 023, 063 by XP Explorer.

I figured I have to add the trailing zeros to the old file names and, perhaps, modify the data collection program. But then I noticed that in the Temporary Internet Files folder files are _not_ ordered numerically but "alphabetically" like in 95.

My question then is - Can XP Explorer be set to sort a file list in the same way it does for the Temporary Internet Files folder?

I apologise for in advance for not being able to ask the question clearly, but if I could do THAT I could probably figure this out on my own.

Win7 is different in that the "Favorites" drop down menu has EVERYTHING on my entire computer, and I have to manually poke arond and figure out where the folder(s) I want and avoid accidentally clicking that which I do not.

And I NEVER want to access my C:\Windows folder when trying to find a Favorite that I saved some time in the past, because it would be more convenient to find the link in my favorites folder instead of poking around looking for it again online.

So instead of poking around in the morass of the internet, I'm poking around in the confused mess of my own hard drive.

When I try to "delete" this folders, I discover they aren't actually "shortcuts" to the computer's folders & files, the are the ACTUAL folders & files, and so after deleting a bunch of files off the desktop, I've come to the conclusion that this is serious and need to be fixed. Any help in this regard would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

I've been using RT7 Lite over the past few months to create a fully updated Win-7 SP1 installation image that includes drivers for the hardware I have, and does not include any of a dozen or so "bad" telemetry or win-10 nagware updates. For the record this is Win-7, Ultimate, SP1, 32 bit. I've rolled in over 550 updates so far, seems to be up-to-date right at first boot as far as WindozeUpdate is concerned.
Problem is that I get a message window every time I create a new folder or rename an existing folder. This is happening when the folder is on the system hard drive (I think it happens on thumb drives as well). The message is that the "Item not found" - in reference to the new name I've just tried to apply. I can select "try again" and that works - all the time. I'd rather not have to deal with that.
I see that this issue started way back in April or May 2010, and there are various threads on the net about adding or deleting registry entries, or that it may be related to one or two KB's, or that it may be related to trying to get rid of this thing called "Libraries" that shows up in file explorer. I've tried everything, and can't make this issue go away.
Any idea what I should be looking for - either in the registry or bad kb's that I should try to remove from my master-install image?

When I right-click the Explorer icon in my Task bar I get a list of Frequent folders.

I would like to ask a few questions:
(a) What are the criteria for adding a folder to the list? As far as I can recall I have only accessed one folder on the list once or twice. And other folders that I access more often are not there.

(b) How can I suppress the whole section? I see that I can remove individual entries from the list, but how about the whole lot?

(c) I don't recall seeing this before applying some Windows Updates. Was it an Update or did I just not notice it before?

Answer:Q: "Frequent" folders shown for Explorer in Taskbar

a) Not sure

b) Right click on Start orb > Properties > Start menu button > Customize > See picture below

c) It is always there. You must have missed it before.

Today I tried to burn a disk of mp3 files as I've done many times before. When I tried to copy the files from the C drive to the D (CD/DVD drive), Windows Explorer only would allow "Move," not "Copy". I tried to copy with CTRL+Right Click and that didn't work either - when I hover over the icon for the D drive it says "Move."

I was able to copy and burn a disk (in CD format) with Windows Media Player, and the CD drive works fine for playback. Also, when I plug in an external hard drive Windows Explorer allows copy of files to the external hard drive.

It's only when I try to copy files to the CD drive that I encounter this problem.

No other recent changes have been made to the computer.

Any idea, and thanks very much!

Answer:Windows Explorer only allows "Move", not "Copy" to CD/DVD drive

try selecting the files--then right click and select 'SEND TO' CD/DVD--it shouldn't be possible to 'copy' to a blank CD/DVD as it will be unformatted.

About one month ago, a new problem surfaced:

Most times when I try to "Save As" a document and the application calls Windows Explorer for me to Browse where to save the file, it hangs for upwards of 60 seconds. The Browse window appears, but then I get a "spinning circular cursor" for 45-60 seconds until I can do anything. This occurs in all applications from MSExcel through Internet Explorer.

The system never completely crashes, but there is always this 60 second lag now.

The lag also occurs when I try to open a document...and to a less extent, but sometimes, when I simply open Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer is inconsistent as to whether it will give me a lag...sometimes it does work fine).

I have previously tried posting in the malware forum. I had picked something up they found...and cleaned it out, but that seems to have been completely unrelated to this as it was a virus redirecting my Google searches.

Can anyone help?

System: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, SP1
ASUS laptop K52F
Accounts on laptop: Admin (Administrator account), Fred (Standard user account)

[Note: Posted this message to 2 other forums 2 weeks ago but never received a satisfactory answer so I am posting it here.]

Two weeks ago I installed the following optional Windows updates:
KB3080079 [adds RDS support for TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 ]
KB915597 [update to Windows Defender definitions]

When I logged in to an Administrator account ["Admin"], the login was very, very slow and I saw the message "Wait for group policy client". So I rebooted and again logged into an Administrator account. The message still appeared and the login was still very slow. I do not remember ever seeing this message prior to the above updates, although I am unsure if the message was related to the updates.

So I tried two experiments:
(Experiment 1) Disconnected from the Internet, rebooted, & logged in to an Administrator account. The message no longer appeared. I tried this 2 times - no message.

(Experiment 2) Reconnected to the Internet, rebooted, & logged in to an Administrator account. The message no longer appeared. I tried this 2 times - no message.

The message no longer appears with logins to either account (Administrator account & Standard user accout)

After this problem occurred, I scanned my laptop with the following, none of which found any problems:
Avira, Malwarebytes, TDSSKil... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 displays never before seen message - "Wait for group policy client"

1. Why are you updating Windows Defender when you have Avira, I assume installed? Defender should have turned itself off if you installed another av program.

2. Since Home Premium does not come with the Group Policy Editor, how was this installed?

Hi all,

Please helppppp.

In my case the search does not work for any user profile!

from the search programs and files when I type in a command or program name here's what I get blank icons "programs, control panel, documents, Microsoft Outlook, Files" If I press on one of them I recieve a pop up saying "These files can't be opened. Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened".

If I press on the "search more results" then the search I'm looking for is found, which in my opinion search and indexing is working from within explorer but not from within the "search programs and files" from the start Menu. Fromm within Outlook 2010 I'm also able to locate any email easily.

Here are the list of things I tried so far.

- don't have or can't find so I couldn't delete the following key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

- deleted indexing and created it again.

- I can not restore PC to a previous state as I do not have any restore points

-search does not work in safe mode either

- search is enabled under Windows Features

- Search service is running

- Installed these 2 hotfixes KB2268596-x64 and Windows6.1-KB977380-x64

Answer:Windows 7 "search programs and files" displays no results.

Good day all.

I recently restarted my computer only to be met with an empty desktop.

Also, My Start Menu is empty. I can't locate any of programs or documents.a Right clicking and going to windows explorer, I could only view : "My Computer", "Windows (C); and when I click on them, they contain few irrelevant files.

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

My wifi still works so the only thing I can do on my system is browse on the internet.

However, I can open a microsoft office file, PDF files, if I download it directly from my email or from an external drive.

I can save files on my new blank desktop.

I presume this is a virus attack.

Can anyone be kind enough to advise me on what to do?

Thanking you in advance.

Answer:Desktop erased. Can't Locate "My Documents" folder and "Start Menu" folders

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

Since upgrading to Windows 7 I find that when I click on the help link in a Windows dialogue box the link brings me to a totally irrelevant section in the Windows help file. As an example, I'm into a file sharing dialogue box, there is a link for "I'm having trouble sharing". If I click on the link I get this information displayed in the "Windows Help and Support".

Here are answers to some common questions about Data Execution Prevention (DEP).

What is DEP?

DEP is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. DEP monitors programs to make sure they use system memory, safely. If a program tries running (also known as executing) code from memory in an incorrect way, DEP closes the program. DEP automatically monitors essential Windows programs and services, but you can increase your protection by having DEP monitor all programs. For more information, see Change Data Execution Prevention settings.

Hi,
After getting poor responses from other hardware forums, I had decided to try my luck in techspot. any comment is deeply appreciated...

This is what happened:
I had just reformatted and resinstall WindowXp. After running for about a day, the monitor suddenly shows "no-signal" exactly when I logged-out of windows. It should supposedly show that blue windows screen with the users name for log-in. apparently the harddisks are still running and the system is "on". Its not a sleep or energy-saving mode (I can b pretty sure cos mousing around doesnt help) just not able to detect any video signal. I did a hard-reset by pressing the reset button on the casing and everything went back normal. That was the first time and only time something like this happened. I m using a MSI AGP 6600GT video card on a 15" viewsonic CRT monitor. Latest video drivers were used.

May I know is that suppose to be a hardware or software problem? I had been getting n solving quite a no. of hardware issues and seriously hardware issues are tricky and troublesome... >: Is it a problem with the video card?

Thanks alot...

Answer:Help: Monitor displays "No-signal" after logging off windows

It may have just been a glitch, with your memory, at the time of signing out. If you can't replicate the problem, every time, then it is hard to determine what the problem actually is. As long as the problem hasn't repeated itself, I wouldn't worry about it.

I just reformated my hard drive and reloaded XP Home. The problem I'm having, is that when I open Windows Explorer, (not Internet Explorer) the left pane (tree) does not cascade automatic to show all the folders. It just shows Documents, My Computer and the + sign beside each one to expand to the folders. It used to do this automatically in the past. I've tried all the view options on the tool bars, all property settings and nothing works. I'm running active desktop like I always do. Any ideas?

Thanks, Steve

Can anyone tell me how to get the Left pane back using Regedit ?I always use shortcut Win + E to open Windows Explorer. I edited the Registry to let the mouse pointer open a program by just pointing the arrow at the program icon. However that did not happen. And though I undid that edit. I lost the left pane in Windows Explorer in the bargain. The Windows Explorer displays only the right pane. How do I resurrect the left pane in W Explorer?

Answer:Left pane in Windows Explorer has gone blank

From IE toolbar, click on show favourites, or history if you wish, and the left pane should appear showing whichever you have chosen. j.

If I expand a folder that's down towards the bottom and there's a lot of subfolders, then everything moves up to make room for the subfolder list. That's as it should be. But about the time I go to click on one of the subfolders, the whole list moves down again and you have to scroll back down to get where you want. After that, it stays put. It's an bug/annoyance that I hope someone gets fixed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Answer:Windows Explorer left hand pane

I think the OP is noticing the little quirk in Win 7 where Explore does not bring the left pane target folder (the one with focud) up to the to of the pane, throwing it instead to the bottom of the pane.

A nuisance for sure, but unresolved to my knowledge.

Hi, as with many I have upgraded to Windows 10 today and it is going well except for the fact I am unable to save any files or create new ones in the Documents and Pictures folders or any sub-folders within these folders, and I have no idea why it is doing this. For instance, I tried to save an image created in paint and attempted to save it in the Pictures folder, it gave me the error message seen in this picture below:

Note, I am the only user on the system, and also the admin account so I do not know why it says this. Clicking Yes on the box does nothing and the same thing still occurs afterward. In addition, bringing up the right click menu and going to new only allows me to create a new folder, and the windows admin shield icon appears next to it. Deleting files also prompts me to ask for admin permission but in that case I can simply click the continue button and it goes through. Any advice?

Answer:Unable to create or save files in "Documents" and "Pictures" folders

Open the folders properties and got to the security tab and change permissions for your account, if you can't change permissions take ownership of the folder, if you can't take ownership of the folder activate the super administrator account and change permissions and/or ownership.

There are lots of guides on how to do all of that if you need more detailed steps.

I reformatted my computer recently, with all the same hardware and software I usually do, but this time I noticed something different.

On my E: partition (non-system), there is a folder called "9ca233a934811ecf86022b48e5" which contains two folders: "AMD64" and "i386".

I researched a little bit, and found out those folders pertain to a windows 64-bit edition, but I don't have anything to do with a 64-bit edition, mine's a 32-bit.

Here's my system specs:WinXP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300
3GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 7600 GS 512MB
ST3300831AS 300GB HD
I have my HD partitioned to 3 drives:14GB System Drive (C:)
40GB Document Drive (D:)
190GB Storage Drive (E:)
I also have 40GB partitioned as an Acronis True Image Home Secure Zone, for storing Disk Images.

I was wondering why those two folders are on my E: drive, when I'm running a 32-bit version of Windows. Also, (sorry if this should be in another thread) my computer has been restarting unexpectedly while I've just been doing random things on it. Nothing graphics-intensive, or anything like that, so I don't know why it's doing that either.

Thanks for your help and time,
Nic

Answer:"AMD64" and "i386" folders on WinXP Media Center 32-bit edition

It sounds like those are temporary files from a driver installation. A lot of companies seem to package every possible driver in the zip or executable, extract them all to the hard drive, find the one the system needs and copy it to the system32 directory, then leave the rest behind.

In that case they should be safe to delete. It would take a bit more research on your part to make sure. Maybe a readme or help file somewhere in the directory?

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

Aaron

I have Windows 7 Home Pro installed on my laptop, and I'm one of those people that likes to keep my Start Menu folder OCD-tidy.

In W7 (as I believe it was in Vista) there are two folders that handle the program shortcuts for the Start Menu. There's a user-specific one (for programs only that user can use) and the all-users one (for programs everyone can use).

C:\Users\Joe\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I'm the only user on my laptop, so I'd like to just consolidate these two folders into one to make it easier for me to sort and keep track of. Is there any reason not to just drag-and-drop stuff from one to the other? Is there one that I should use in preference to the other (should I keep everything in the "user" folder or the "all-users" folder?

I'm pretty sure I just did this without any problem in Vista, but I wanted to make sure so I don't mess anything up as I'm new to W7.

Thanks,
Joe

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

"Windows explorer has stopped working", "Windows Explorer is restarting"

Please help!! I keep getting these two error messages and I'm not very savvy when it comes to repairing a computer... I tried to restart and troubleshoot, but to no avail, I still get the same errors... it started a few days ago, but even system restore did nothing to help the problem... Please, if anyone can help with this, I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks in advance, and hope you all have a great night!

3. Double checking all open processes, none of which were abnormal.
4. Disabled UAC (Did that a long time ago)
5. Disabled thumbnails, and used icons instead
6. Clear history, cookies, and all temporary internet files
7. Defragmented.

I'm completely out of ideas of what it could be. I really don't want to re... Read more
