Startup question - computer showing me some kind of BIOs?

Question: Startup question - computer showing me some kind of BIOs?

Afrer not using the computer for a week, my pc suddenly powers up by it's own each time I open the slot for the CPU on my extension meaning I don't have to press the power button on the CPU which is weird, and instead of hearing just one beep, my CPU makes 2 more beeps after the first one.

After that this weird BIOs would show up(as shown on the attachment) and when my computer finally starts up, it would suddenly flash duplicates of my home screen forcing me to restart the entire thing. Any solutions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Startup question - computer showing me some kind of BIOs?

CMOS checksum error means the CMOS battery in your computer needs to be replaced.

It's a CR2032 and is about the size of a quarter. They usually coast around $2.

Power off the computer, disconnect the power cord then open the case and look for the battery.

This shows how to replace it on an Emachine. Yours may not be the same but should be similar:

So I just stuck a 1TB SATA HD in my computer, and it's not showing up when I open up My Computer. I've re-started about half a dozen times. I went into the BIOS, and the BIOS sees it. I have very little exerpeience with SATA so maybe I'm just doing something stupid. FWIW, my main HD is on SATA 1 and the new HD is on SATA 3. PLZ HALP!! Thanks

Answer:New SATA HD not showing up in computer; showing up in BIOS

what's happening is the drive hasn't been formatted so it's not showing up in windows because there isn't really anything there. You have to go to disk management and format the drive.

The attached jpg is the 1st item that launches in the bios screens at system star-up. This I think is the driver for a pci card I have installed in a slot in the box that controls (ie-adds another ide port) a second ide CD/DVD drive.

Besides removing the card from the there a way in bios setup to disable this card/slot at system start ?

Having an issue with a windows application that apparently won't deal with a 'raid' type setup...even tho I have no 'raid' setup at all...except for 'raid' being mentioned in bios screen shot attached ?

Answer:Can this bios startup item be disabled at computer startup

No there is nothing in the bios to disable. The controller card has to initialize first for the bios to be able to see it.

Hello, my brother's computer started showing errors on startup not long ago. It runs Windows Vista Home Premium and it's a Dell Inspiron 530. It started showing "Keyboard Failure" but now it's showing "CMOS Checksum Error Defaults Loaded" and "Diskette Drive 0 Seek Failure" and at the bottom "Press F1 to Continue F2 to Enter Setup" but I can't press F1 or F2 because for some reason the keyboard is not working on the computer. Please help us c: Thank you. :D

Answer:Computer showing errors on startup

Let's start by replacing the cmos battery (on your motherboard) and see if that helps. It's the simplest first step.

Hey guys, firstly just wanted to say that this forum looks incredibly useful for everything wondows 7, after visiting for a while as a guest.
I have a problem..

Last night, i noticed i had low memory on my C drive. so I uninstalled a few programs - games mostly and needless addons - and then restarted. After restarting, the laptop got stuck at the bootup screen, at about 70%, then persisted to say "operating system not found" repeatedly.

This morning, after turning it on, it now gets past this screen, but says theres a "SMART failure predicted" on on my Hard drive. It also says ahard drive fail;ure is imminent. It does this for a few minutes, and then gets 'stuck' again at 70% at startup.

So.. is this a problem with my HDD? Everything points to this, but I'm not sure of my next step? Do i need to reinstall windows (problem, seeing as i don't have an installation disc)

Any help would be appreciated :/

When i turn on the computer, my moniter stays on stand by. All the fan's and lights show up, even the LED's on the fans, but i get no action from my moniter.

shouldn't i see the bois information?

on to my dvd drive. i've plugged it in, with the 4 pin power bit, and an IDE cable which goes into my primary IDE slot.

I get power, but when i press the "eject" button nada happens. When i take OUT the ide cable, the disc tray does actually eject.

i've stuck in an old CD drive and it does the exact same. any reason why?

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with a 3TB Western Digital Red drive.

It does not show up in My Computer, Disk Management or Device Manager or diskpart >> list volume.
Also a no show in the Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool and CrystalDiskInfo.

It does show up in BIOS (See screenshot) and also in the Intel Rapid Storage Technology tool (See screenshot)
In both places it is showing as 0GB though.

What I've tried:
Unplugged all other drives except the C Drive and the 3TB WD, same result as above.
Unplugged all other drives except the 3TB WD and launched the installation CD for both Windows 7 and XP to see if either would recognise it. Neither did.

I'm out of ideas (I did see a few things online I didn't try, like uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers from the Device Manager, since I don't really know what that means I didn't)

I have several issues going on with my cpu at the moment that I believe are being caused by a virus. The first of which is my windows firewall will not and cannot be turned on. I've got the little flag in the lower right hand corner of the screen with a red X on it saying that I need to turn windows security on. When I go to do this a prompt comes up saying The Windows Security Service can't be started. One of the other issues I am having is not being able to download ANYTHING. Something has taken over the task of watching over my downloads. EVERYTHING I have downloaded from pictures to all of these programs to run scans was deemed infected and rejected. I basically had to download the programs to another cpu and put them on disc to install them. Most of the scans didn't turn up anything, so I'm not sure what to do. :confused Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm attaching the logs from the scans.

Answer:Hitachi Hard disk showing 0 mb in bios & Not showing in windows explorer

QuoteIT show zero bytes in bios and not shown in windows explorer,I see it in Device manager, wit zero space. The Bios recognizing the drive is the lowest level of recognition. If not recognized at this level its usually a jumper setting, cable issue, or Bios needs to be flashed with a newer version. Is this hard drive an IDE (PATA) drive or a newer SATA drive for starters? If it is a IDE (PATA) drive it could be jumper set wrong, (Master(MA), Slave(SL), Cable Select(CS))If its a SATA drive I'd try a different SATA cable with it to rule that out.*I wouldnt jump into flashing your Bios with an update unless you find information supporting a known issue with the version you are running and hard drives. A bad flash can kill certain motherboards that dont have Bios protection that can revert back on wrong or failed flashes.

hi there
i have a lenovo s12 notebook and i have problem with the bios password. the bios was once password protected and i wanted to get rid of it, so i opened the bios went into password management and tried to "disable" but apparently the system didnt want to accept that option, so that i went to the password field, then put the old password, and then i gave him 2 "blanks" enter enter since i assumed it would not ask password again...on windows it works like that, you put a blank password twice, and then he will not ask you password again.
now what happened is that the system still asks password on bios, i cannot enter setup again since after the brief setup loading, old password doesn't work, it doesn't accept a blank password either, i tried the generic password for the phoenix bios that appears to be "phoenix"....
should i only have to go the hard way, open the computer and disconnect the cmos battery? given that it's possible to find it of course, since it's a laptop??? does anybody know any other "generic" bios password?? or i have seen that if you can build an external device then you can connect it to the mobo and read the password stored onto the mobo, but that starts to become a bit too techy, i dont wanna build and solder.
anyway any help greatly appreciated please answer to my email xxxxxxxxx
thanks a lot

Well, I decided to finally take apart this old eMachines to clean it.

Taking precautions, I carefully took out all the wires, took out the motherboard, took off the heatsink, took out the processor. Then using Isoprol alcohol I cleaned off the previous thermal pad from the processor and heatsink. I took some AS5, applied it to the processor die, spread it out, and put down the heatsink on it. Lockd it up, blew out all the dust, everything was ready.

Put everything back into the case, turned it on, and XP asks me whether I want to start normally or the last good config (or safe mode). I click normally and bam! It hangs.

So I take it apart again, remove heatsink, reapply thermal paste, put on heatsink, and lift it up to see if it made contact with the processor. Yup, thermal paste on the heatsink was visible. Put it back down. Turned on again, went into BIOS, Computer Health, and let it sit there. ~3 minutes of sitting and updating (it said the processor was 24-30C while it sat there unfrozen) and it locked up....

Put a huge fan blowing on the side of the thing (side taken off), and tried again in case it was a heat problem. ~7 minutes, hanged.

Took apart everything, reassembled everything. New thermal paste (for like the 10th time). Left only the wire to the front button for bootup, harddisk, and ram and processor. Everything else was disconnected.

Do the same "Start Last Good Config" with XP, froze there. Thought it was a HD proble... Read more

Answer:Once cleaned computer hangs at BIOS/startup

how much thermal paste did you use? too much or too little can cause your processor to overheat, as is a common problem. the proper amount should be equal in volume to that of one U.S. dime. your bios-reported temps seem too good to be true, seeing that room temperature is 25 degrees. i've seen many motherboards report temperatures that were way off when checked against a separate temperature probe. this generally happens most with cheaper motherboards, such as the ones you would find in compaq, hp, dell, gateway, sony, and emachines systems.

taking the heatsink off is not necessary for your average cleaning. clearing the dust out of the case, fans, components, and heatsinks can all be done just fine without taking anything apart, excluding the side panel of the case. only when replacing or removing the processor and/or the cooler is it necessary to take off the heatsink.

when you did all this, did you take the nessesary anti-static precautions? grounding the metal chasis while you work is fine, but using a grounded wrist strap is even better. without anti-static precautions, it is easy to destry or damage parts without even realizing it. static electricity levels are usually highest on dry carpet, while wearing socks or rubber sole shoes.

after going through these possibilities, i reccomend running the computer with minimal parts. this means you disconnect all drives, remove expansion cards, and so on. you need a keyboard, cpu, ram, a video card, and a power supply. ... Read more

Hi, I'm kinda new and any help is appreciated.

My computer lately for the third time now (been about 1 month...) have begun freezing on the first boot when I turn on my computer. It usually freezes right after I log on to windows, a few seconds after my desktop is loaded up and right before all of my startup programs are loaded. With this, my cursor will be frozen and my computer will not react to cap locks or numlocks when i press them and I would be stuck on my desktop with a frozen cursor. And then usually I would have to restart the computer once to a few more times before the computer can successfully start up without freezing. Sometimes when it freezes, it would freeze right after the Windows XP logo on a black screen.

Sometimes, when it takes me too many times to restart in order for the computer to start up, it will end up loading up the BIOS right after restart. With this, I will simply either save and exit the BIOS to continue to boot to windows. However, most of the times, my computer will just freeze on a blank black screen right after I hit "save changes and exit bios" or "discard changes and exit bios (tried both)" as it would not load to windows. With this, I would have to restart again and once again takes me to the bios screen. I would do the same and it would freeze again after I exit the BIOS. It would only be after a dozen painful tries, it would finally load up windows successfully. Once my computer boot and started up successfu... Read more

i turn on my computer and i get a black screen with a mouse cursor. im curious because this is the first time its happened to me. so i closed the top to put my computer in hibernation mode. i open the top and it shows my account saying that im logged on. so i click my icon to go to my desktop like a normal startup and i get the black screen with a cursor. i can move the cursor around but there is nothing to click on. i do ctrl+alt+del and my task manager pops up without any problems. i look on the list of applications and i have nothing listed. i look at the processes tab and i only have these programs listed like this:

Image Name User Name CPU Memory (Private Working Set) Description
csrss.exe SYSTEM 00 1,760k Client Server Runtime Process dwm.exe my username 00 34,636k Desktop Window Manager
firefox.exe my username 00 104,004k Firefox
rundll32.exe my username 00 1,220k Windows host process (rundll32)
taskeng.exe my username 00 3,604k Task Scheduler Engine
taskmgr.exe my username 00 8,368k Windows Task Manager
winlogon.exe SYSTEM 00 1,740k Windows Logon Application

i can open files and programs using the new task button on my windows task manager. but i have no start menu, no desktop, anything that is running completely takes up the entire screen and if i minimize it it just shows a small bar with the name of that window. i really have no idea what is up with my computer. any help at all would be MUCH appreciated!

I am running Win 7 Pro 64 bit.
My MB is an ASUS A8N32 SLI-Deluxe w/BIOS 1405

I installed a 3rd SATA HDD.
My problem was that 2 of the 4 SATA ports on the south bridge were blocked by my graphics card.
I had another port that is described as a Silicon Images SATA port for a RAID configuration with eSATA. (I have nothing hooked to eSATA port.) So I connected the HDD to this port.

Windows configured it just fine. It looks good and seems to work well. But it does not show up in the BIOS listed with the other SATA Drives. However, it does show up when I drill down into RAID BIOS.

My question: Is this going to be a problem down the road? I do not plan to use it for anything other than data storage.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Hey all,

so the issue is, i got a NEWER(to me) MOBO and set up the computer as per-normal, the issue i'm facing is...

when I power on the PC, it boots DIRECTLY into BIOS, not POST issues/start up messages

Checked CMOS battery, is still good and hold settings properly
When I use another HDD (W7) it boots no problem, I double checked and made sure the setting for "legacy" wasn't legacy only and such....

much confusion, but any ideas of possible work arounds?

Hey guys. If you could help me out that'd be absolutely fantastic hey.

I'll explain my problem as thoroughly as I can.

I have an IBM pc, dual processor both 500mhz, roughly 300mb ram. and the usual lah's and dah's. It originally had XP installed on my first partitioned drive and a general media/backup on my second partitioned drive, in case I ever needed to format, you know, save the backup process.

The problem occurred when I downloaded the trial for Windows 2003 server.. it was two CD's in .iso format, I burned them to CD all fine and dandy and inserted the one first it told me to. It went about its usual install process and got to the stage where the PC needed to be rebooted to continue.

It made it to the "jurassic park" screen.. a blank black dos screen with a single blinking underscore in the top left. I left it for sufficient time to realise nothing further was going to happen.

Things I've tried:
- booting from floppy disk .. nothing at all.. doesn't appear to recognise it or even look for it
- booting from cd .. same as above
- "resetting" cmos/bios or whatever by a) playing with jumpers and b) taking cmos battery out for half an hour. this did reset some things but not the problem.
If i dont choose to go into bios, the general procedure is as follows: (same with or without floppy and bootable cdrom) I've used the @ symbol to denote a message I'm getting on screen.. not letter for letter but includ... Read more

We have T570 laptops and Bios version 1.09 and some on 1.19 bios version.  New Bios came out to upgrade to 1.21 4/27/2017.  We've download the new Bios and upgraded it but in Bios still shows 1.19 not 1.21.  We try to run the upgrade again and says we have the latest version.  Anyone have a solution for this

Answer:T570 Bios 1.21 upgrade not showing correct version in bios

1.21 (N1VUJ04W) 1.21 (N1VET31W) 1.11 (N1VHT21W) 01 2017/04/25
1.19 (N1VUJ03W) 1.19 (N1VET29W) 1.09 (N1VHT19W) 01 2017/03/30Found the 1.21 on Lenovo site is still packaged with 1.19 files to flash.  Once run the 1.21 file it extracts to C:\Drivers. In that folder show N1VUJ03W which is the 1.19 not the N1VUJ04W 1.21 and in the flash folder has the N1VET29W 1.19 not the N1VET31W 1.21.  Who ever packaged the 1.21 did not add the new files for 1.21 or the link to download is still pointing to the 1.19 exe file..

So recently I purchased a Galaxy GTX 460 768MB video card. I was previously using a BFG Tech GTX 275. When I first installed the GPU I was on an ASUS P5B Deluxe WiFI Edition motherboard. I am now on an ASRock P64 Extreme4 motherboard. I mention the old mobo because the problem has been the same regardless. So I link the issue to the GPU.

Anywho, the new Galaxy card on boot, displays it's own Bios information before the mobo Bios page shows up. It's actually the first thing I see on my monitor. It just simply displays Galaxy Bios version (etc. etc. etc). It doesn't last for more than 3-4 seconds, but I personally feel it's an unnecessary delay. Especially since I'm so adamant about computer efficiency and I try to get my boot up times as fast as possible. Just a personal hobby I enjoy! So I was curious if there is a way to disable this initial Bios screen? I did many google searches and couldn't find the problem to a a perfect description. Some people did mention that it has to do with a motherboard conflict, but that's why I mentioned bother motherboards. One was old, and the one I'm on now is brand new. I've never purchased a Galaxy card until now, so I'm curious if it's unique to their brand? I've never updated Bios on a video card before and I'm not sure if it'd cure the problem either. Anyone familiar with this situation? Thank you!

Edit: I'll take a picture of the Bios screen and post it quick. I just thought about doing it, but I typed this entire message and I can't ... Read more

Although I have a hundred things to do around the apartment, I decided to prioritize by checking my BIOS. I would like to know if my settings are 100% UEFI or whether the machine is actually booting Legacy without telling me.

Start - I have a Dell Optiplex 7010 desktop with 16GB RAM dual-booting Win 7 Pro SP1 64-bit and Win 10 Pro 64-bit. (The Win 10 side was originally 8, then 8.1, then 10. The 10 had lots of Event Viewer errors, so I "clean" reinstalled the 10 with a USB drive. On both the 7 and 10 sides, my sfc /scannows now run clean.)

Here's what the BIOS says:

General - System Information: The BIOS is A20 (the latest).
General - Boot Sequence: Boot Sequence: Windows Boot Manager is checked, and it says "Windows Boot Manager".
Boot List Option: UEFI is selected. If I hit "View" on the right, nothing happens.
General - Advanced Boot Options: Enable Legacy Option ROMs is checked. (I wonder what would happen if I UNchecked this.)
System Configuration - SATA Operation: AHCI is checked.
Secure Boot - Secure Boot Enable: Secure Boot is DISabled. (I have NO desire to change this.)
Virtualization Support - Virtualization: Enable Intel Virtualization Technology is checked.
Virtualization Support - VT for Direct I/O: Enable VT for Direct I/O is checked.

Hi, everyone, as I say a different kind of questionbut as I can find little help elsewhere I thought I would try this forum.Around July this year I purchased XP pro from EbayIt was sold as genuine but was a pirate copy.Returned it for a refund which I never got.I paid by cheque. After reporting this to ebay and obviously so have others he has been visited by the police and TradingStandards or so he says.He is now offering a full refund if I supply my Paypal details (Not sure what details he requires here)As he now has my name&Email address and my home addressI am somewhat reluctant to supply this info.I just asked him tosend me back a cheque but no response.Any views on this one guys?Ray

Answer:a different kind of question

Can you not get ebay to do the recovery they did for me and the guy was in Hong kong. Not sure he could do much wrong with your paypal details as he'd need your password but you never know.He should honour the cheque return as its not as if you payed by paypal

Hi Everyone,

This is not a question, but a bit of "wisdom" that I thought I should share.

On some new (usually high end systems) I have had some start up issues related to Ground Loops. Basically if a computer won't start as normal, e.g.: you push the power button and nothing happens, there could be a ground loop affecting your computers ability to start. In my experience these loops are almost always caused by powered USB Hubs, however any peripheral with power could potentially be an issue.

Take for example the image below - notice that one USB lead is connected to a powered USB hub, and one lead is connected to a USB extension cable (that goes directly to the computers motherboard) -

The above arrangement made my home computer unbootable. This illustration is an extreme example in that a peripheral is connected between the Hub and the computer. However I have experienced instances where no peripherals have been connected, and the powered Hub has still stopped the computer from booting. In these instances I have simply used the powered Hub without power (and it still seems to work fine) and the computer has then been able to start as normal.

Hopefully this helps some forum members

Kind Regards,

hello, the reason i wanted to ask this is because i recently jailbroke my iphone and i was amazed with cydia i like that there is one app where you can get any modifications for the iphone, in fact i like it so much it posed a question, is there a program that you can get for the pc that also gives you options for small modifications and themes for the computer, like different icons or cool new options like email on desktop just fun things like that, please let me know because i would download it in a second.

Answer:kind of a funny question

I doubt that there is one application that can do all those things, because like you said, it would be well known and popular by now. What kinds of modifications are you looking for? Programs like ObjectDock and RocketDock let you get the Mac OSX dock on your Windows PC. To be completely honest, it is really fun at first, but soon gets annoying. There is another little app called Rainmeter or Rainlendar. They put a series of customizable "gadgets" on your desktop. They stay out of the way, but easily accessible on your desktop. They give things such as system stats, calender, and alarm clocks. Also, they have customizable skins which you can download. For themes, you can surprisingly find a lot of them on Microsoft's Windows website. Have fun!

On my hdtv, when i resize the image to fit the entire image of the xbox 360 i get a vertical line of decreased clarity on the extreme right hand side of my screen. (the very edge.) It goes away once i put the image of the xbox 360 back to normal, and scrolls with it depending on how i size the image. Is this likely my tv or xbox?

Answer:xbox 360 (kind of a pc) question

It is an image bleed and a defect of many tvs....but most japanese manufacturers wont admit it to save money on recalls.

My tv has a ghosting line for about an inch from the end in HD mode....

Also, interesting to note, that your tv is probably HD lite, or HD superlite....

Meaning, for the japanese to push product....they lie

True HD is 1920x1080p
HD lite(what is usually broadcasted) is 1920x1080 i which is just a strecthed out version of 720p
And then there is HD superlite(what the tv actually displays) which is 1280x720

Pretty bad ripoff....huh......
The only a few true HD tvs out on the market...
The apple 23-inch cinema display and....
The apple 30-inch cinema dispaly

Their resolutions actually meet or exceed HD specifications...

My wife finally gave me the go-ahead and so Im starting to design a new system. Only thing is I cant afford everything that I would like right now, but need to have a system up and running soon. So the question is: What should I buy now , and what should I plan to upgrade as I go along? Ive got around $600 now to create a system. Ill have another $1000+ or so as the next year wears on.

Heres my uses, now and later:

Now: office suite stuff (98se), e-mail, MP3 listening, music burning, a little gaming (once I get a 3D video card..), DVD playing (my wifes only requirement which is, of course, numero uno is that it play DVDs, including German DVDs (is there a difference?), on a full-sized TV and look GOOD!).

Later: I want to dual boot Linux (as soon as I figure out how) so I can play with it, some adventurous digital photo work and more serious gaming (as soon as I find the time).

The hardware requirements are nice sound, that DVD thing for my wife, a CD-RW, and front-side USB 2.0. I use pen drives to carry stuff to work and back. Id like an AMD solution and lean toward NVIDIA.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.

I'm looking at building two pc's for my fiance and myself and I thought I'd make the leap to Vista. I haven't had any problems with xp or anything, I just want to be able to use all my memory (and it looks pretty).

Anyway, do I need a separate copy of Vista for each machine? I mean it's like, technically they are both my computers, they will be ten feet from each other, but does MS have some kind of authentication per pc deal? I've got a laptop, desktop, and a 250 GB external hard drive. What I'm trying to do is make sure that the My Documents folder on my desktop and the external is identical, and that they also contain everything thats in My Documents on the laptop (but the laptop won't have everything that the other two locations have since it has a smallish hard drive).

Basically I'll be copying from the desktop to the external, and to the desktop from the external, and from the laptop to the external, but not from the external to the laptop.

I fiddled around with Window's backup wizard but it seems like it only creates a single backup file and I want all these files to be "live" so I and others can access them from my external. I can't just copy and paste because it asks if you want to replace everything in the folders and if you say yes it'll end up replacing gigs and gigs of files which isn't acceptable and if you say no it doesn't copy anything.

Anyone have a way in XP to make this work or know any software that would make this easier? Thanks for any help.

Answer:Back up (kind of) question

i use a domain controller to make this happen, but i'd imagine that a lot more than you'd want to do. check syncback se for a low cost solution that can synchronize that data for you on your schedule.

i like it since i can use one program to do what your talking about and also upload an offline copy to a secure ftp site... great for offline backup.. very safe..

Ok i got a question that most would think its dumb but i just wanted to ask before i try it. And before i get some respenses saying thats dumb, or dont try it, ill say that im using junk stuff to test it on. ANyways, a while back i recieved some cases and PSUs from a friend of my dads. They are HP and the PSUs are 24pin. He is using one of the same kind of PSUs on a 20pin mobo. Thing is, is he has the materials to make a 20 pin PSU cause he has the plastic pieces and a special tool to take the cords out. Well I was looking at a 20 pin PSU and this 24 pin one and i was thinking that maybe i could hack saw the unneeded 4 off it woudl work. Am i right? I hacked off the 4 that dont match up w/ the 20pin one and it fits right in and everything. So anybody think it will work? Again im using cheap junk and dont care if something blows up. Thanx.

Answer:PSU question of the NOT so normal kind

doubtful, unless you're very lucky and have the correct pinouts miraculously the same as the 20 pin. Not all of those pins are power, you see, and if.. say, you mix the power and ground power/nuetral and put it backwards, you're probably gonna be in for a nice little fireworks display. PLUS, you are now messing with the possibility of energizing the entire case giving you a nice little shock when touching it. In short, I wouldn't recomend doing it. May hurt yourself, cause a small electrical fire, or if you're lucky just a small puff of smoke. Then again you may have a chance in 1000 that the wiring schematics match perfectly.

So, I am currently working in a division where we want to tweak the logon screen, but not just what I have found so far, which has been about the branding text or the background or even how to make the user icons be all the same.

What we are looking for is just so it only shows the user login. Now I know about the 'don't use the last user' one... While that is nice, we don't mind the last username showing, but we don't need a bazillion icons for each user who has used the machine, as this is an enterprise environment.

Anyone have any ideas how to accomplish that, or are we basically stuck with the only option of the don't use the last username tweak?

With the newer systems coming without PS2 connections at all, I'm looking for another KVM switch for my work bench that will work with both the older systems with PS2 connections and the newer ones with only USB.

I ran across this KVM switch and I am taken aback by the idea it presents. It supposedly handles keyboard and mouse, as well as video through the video terminal. To be clear, it is a single video-cable-only connection between the KVM and the computer and it claims to handle the keyboard and mouse through some unused pins in the video connector.

This seems almost incredible. Does anyone have any experience with this type of KVM or know of anywhere on the 'net where I can get reliable evaluations?

I called Cox and they said they do not use proxies. The tier-one level support did not even know what a proxy is, and refused to let me speak with somebody who knows something about them. He did indicate my IP from my Command prompt is linked to one of their routers, but could not answer why it shows me in another state.

My questions are these:

Can this be anything but a proxy server? Perhaps a re-route due to server issues here?

And why does my command prompt show a different IP than the IP verification Sites?

Thanks, this is really important to me.

Ok, so say i have three computers, A - laptop, B - MCE machine, and C - server. Say i am on A and want to transfer files from B to C via networked shared folders, would those files be first copied to A from B then sent to C, or would they go from B to C directly?

Answer:I have what might be kind of a stupid question about network file sharing...

You're on A, accessing B (via something like RDP), then copying to C while on B? Then it's B -> C directly.

I have an Inspiron 660 that I think occasionally ends up in sleep mode - perhaps the Windows Hybrid sleep. This usually happens with an unexpected power loss, although sometimes with a shut down that reports in the event log as an unexpected power loss.
When the PC ends up in this state then I usually have a long, frustrating period of trying to get it out of that state.
When I turn it on then all the fans start running, but I never get any power through to the monitor, and the monitor just reports that it is going in to sleep mode.
So I think this is the fast startup that is bypassing POST and then trying to load Windows. I suspect that the Windows sleep/hibernate file is probably corrupt because of the power loss and so it can't get in to Windows and come out of sleep.
I try all the usual things, like removing CMOS battery, using the jumpers to clear the CMOS and the password (even though I don't have a password configured).
I hold the power button in until it turns off. I even try unplugging all power cables from the motherboard while the CMOS battery is out.
I do this over and over and over, until eventually (maybe 20-100+ attempts) it eventually gives me a BIOS/POST message that says it has detected that there have been multiple attempts to restart and would I like to check the settings. If I say yes then I go into the BIOS, save the settings and Windows starts up without any problems and I can work as if nothing happened.
in some cases it will work fine for week... Read more

I can't get into the bios anymore. I updated the bios via the BIOS Update Utility 2.56 and after that I can't see the "press enter to interupt normal startup" message anymore. And therfore can't get into the bios. Windows is still booting normally.  Any ideas?

Answer:T430s bios doesn't show press enter to interupt normal startup after bios update

I found one way to enable it again temporarly: "One way to do it is to use the advanced restart facility in windows 8.  To do this open up the "modern" UI settings (Win-C then choose settings-->change PC settings), go to the general page, scroll down to the bottom and you'll see an option for "Advanced Startup".  If you click the Restart now button and then choose to restart on the page you get offered as the PC powers down, it should let you enter the BIOS." But as soon as windows 8 is booted again the enter message will disapear again.  Any ideas on how to make this permanent?  Thanks

Computer failed during upgrade of bios. I have followed all the steps to recover bios: taken out battery, pressed windows + B + power, restore screen appears. Computer goes thru bios restore process and verification. When it gets to the 'count down to windows start up' and 'continue to restart button', the computer freezes and does not restart. I have pressed the continue button, nothing. I have let the count down continue and it stops at 1 then nothing.

Answer:what kind of computer do I have?

Well if you go to your start menu (bottom left corner) then go to > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information

it will tell you a lot about your system...including XP or 2000, the speed of your processor, etc...

an easier way to tell what OS you have is to restart your computer, and while it is starting it will show a screen like this

I've been researching forever, but I can't find anything that is what I need. I'm not very sure how to pick out a computer that is right for my needs. I need a computer that is capable of running unity efficiently, at least 8 GB Memory(RAM) and a decent core. I do not need anything such as a DVD player/burner or BlueRay. I would prefer it is a 200-450$ range and around a Terabyte of storage. Can anyone help me with this?

Answer:What Kind Of Computer Is Right For Me?

Windows install, drive image rescue programs typically go on DVD's. If you don't have a DVD drive, then you'd have spend money to buy a USB memory stick.

I am going to be buying a new computer, hopefully next week, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers such as Brand and what types of things I should look for, such as memory, size of hard drive, etc. I don't know much about computers, so I don't want to look like I don't know what I want if I choose to go to a computer store, such as Gateway. And I only have less than $1,000 to buy it.

I've heard a lot of good things about Dell and have been looking at the Dell Dimension 2200. It is appealing to me especially because of the price. It has an Intel Celeron Processor @ 1.3 GHz, and I can customize it to be 256MB SDRAM with a 40GB hd, is that any good?

I also looked at the Gateway 300SE Special which is also an Intel Celeron Processor @ 1.3 GHz, which I can customize to be 256 MB SDRAM with a 40 GB hd, what are your opinions about this one?

Do I really need the 256MB SDRAM, or is 128MB SDRAM ok?

I pretty much only need the computer for internet, computer applications such as Microsoft Money, and playing The Sims game. So, I'm not necessarily looking for one that is the "best", or the latest in technology, just one that will perform the tasks I listed above. My computer is old, and I mean really old. It only has a 1.28GB hd, so it's pretty bad.

I'm 22 and I still live with my parents and they are the ones actually purchasing the computer, but they are giving me the money and leaving me to find the best deal we ca... Read more

I want to be able to use my laptop as an alarm clock, get me up in the morning and ready to do a few things before work. Yeah I have a phone, but  my problem is it's too easy for me to just reset my phone time and go back to bed. I do it ALL the time. I figure it'd be harder and less appealing to shut down my laptop after it's booted up and played an alarm noise. I know it's a weird question, but can the bios for the W530 support time based automatic bootup of the system via the internal clock?

Answer:Does the W530 bios have a scheduled bios startup time?

I think you can set it up with a Wake on LAN system, or with a timed resume from Standby.

Have a annoying problem, bought new system emachines system for mom and computer has annoying problem. Bios screen loads then screen goes black and loading windows progress bar shows, once the windows loading screen shows the computer takes 200 seconds before it starts loading windows. Once it starts to load windows, windows loads normally and the system is ok. Untill I have to restart or shut down then back to the same issue.

I have done a complete restore on the system using the restore particion to no avail, the same problem still happens. I contacted emachines tech support and they said that they will send me a set of restore disks but that it going to take 10-14 days. I have scanned the computer with ca, and have installed advanced system care and no virus pops up and there is no difference with system care. Could there be a registry key entry that has been changed or not specified that could be causing the delay in starting windows?????

I need help with my computer because every time I try to run a scan with avg 2011 registered edition, it starts, and then finishes like in three seconds, plus when i try to run avg pc tuneup registered version, the scan starts to work, and then the whole computer resets, plus, When that was happening, I downloaded malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and when that starts to scan, it freezes then exits, and when i try to execute it, it says " access is denied, can't find the specified path or folder, etc" i have tried them all more than once, and the same thing happens, and i reinstalled Malwarebytes, and then it does the same thing too..
I have also tried to use "winsockfix" that didn't do anything, it worked, but it didn't fix the problem. Also, when I tried to use gmer.exe, the first time, it was scanning, then the computer reset, and the second and third time, while it was scanning, it exited too, and when i try to execute it, it would say the same thing that malwarebytes would say, but when i only checked selections, and C:/ , it worked..
I think i should add, that before this, when i had avg, i installed norton internet security, and when i tried to go on the internet, it wouldn't connect, so i tried a lot of different things, but i just uninstalled norton, and the internet started working... please help, cause this is my computer that has a lot of things that i use on here..... thanks

I came home today, turned on my computer and realized that it was acting up. Almost instantly, more than half of my icons were deleted and so were most of my files.

I went into safe mode, did a system restore to 3 days ago and downloaded Malwarebytes. It found 6 malicious objects and quarantined them. It told me to restart, so I did. I ran it again just for good measure and it found 2 more malicious objects. I found it weird. I did it a third time and again the same 2 Trojans have been found.

How should I fix this? Right now I'm trying ComboFix for the second time. The first attempt gave me a blue screen.

Also, I should mention that Malwarebytes keeps stopping the process called "svchost.exe"

Update: I just system restored it to 1-27-2012...The Trojans are still there

First hung up Windows 7 during boot up, screen just froze. Then did clean install of Ubuntu 11.10, it hangs and freezes on start up too. Was able to start Ubuntu with the CD, so it seems BIOS and board are ok. Wondering if I somehow lost the boot sector of the HD? It's a 500GB, Western Digital Caviar SATA, Board is BIOSTAR geforce 7150 with 4GB DDR2 RAM. Kept this machine simple as it was intended to be a trading computer. Proved too unreliable. Had to replace bad memory stick. Memtest shows both are good now.

Has anyone run into something similar?

Answer:Computer will not start OS of any kind

I would format it with GParted to wipe out the boot sector. I would then use a bootable CD (like Hiren's or UBCD) to check out the drive before going any further.

My brother got on our family computer and created another administrator account, as he told us.

Now, all the documents, favorites, pictures, etc. come from
C:\Documents and Settings\Alex instead of C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.

I tried to delete the "Alex" folder, but it says Windows needs it to run and it cannot be deleted.

How can I restore my pictures, documents, favorites, e-mails, etc. from Administrator? Everything is still there, I saw it all, but it's like the "Alex" folder has overtaken the computer.

I hope this is enough info, I'll check back soon!

To my understanding, there should now be a "Family" account and an "Administrator" account .. both of which have administrator properties, but when I logged out to switch accounts, only the Family account remained and the "alex" folder is still controlling everything.

Answer:My Computer Was Kind of Wiped?

Hello and Welcome Back to TSF

You may try System Restore to a date before he created the new account, but I strongly feel this will not help.

You can also try and copy data from 1 user profile to a new the profile. Although the following link gives instructions for a corrupt user account its the same thing

I'm thinking it has something to do with a virus...but anyways...back to my problem...

Your computer has been shut down due to an Error...blah blah
If this is the first time you've seen this problem, just restart your computer...if this is the second time you've seen this screen, do this and this and this.

(sorry for being so undescriptive)

and so I keep restarting my computer...but it just keeps going to that I'm just really out of ideas...I really need help ...please?

Answer:My Computer Turns ON...Kind of...

Hi, welcome to Techspot

Assuming you're using windowsXP... right mouse click "my computer" icon, select properties > start up and recovery (settings) > under system failure uncheck the "automatically restart" box > click OK and exit

*if you cant even stay in windows long enough to do that, then hold F8 while booting up and choose "safe mode", then once in windows perform the above procedure

once that step is completed, next time it crashes the blue screen will stay on the screen instead of rebooting. this will allow you to copy the exact error message down so we can find your problem.

when it crashes and you get the blue screen... copy the exact error message letter for letter and make sure you include the file that it links to the error (it will be part of the message)

then post the message here so we can help you further

So I have had this computer now for over a year and the problem I'm about to describe has been existant all the time. Though it's gone multiple weeks without happening and then doing it multiple times a day.

So when I'm for example playing CS.GO everything is acting as it should, no frame drops or whatever and then suddenly my keybord and mouse does not respond and my sound is like a robot screaming. (Don't know how else to put it lol.) I can still see the game going on but I can't do anything and everything moving on the screen is in slow motion. I have to do a reboot to make it work as usual and then just hope that it wont crash again when I play.

My specs are

Yesterday, AVG told me that I had a virus, so it was moved to the vault. After I deleted them, I ran another scan with Ad-aware, and this strange file came up called 'S-1-5-21-1644491937-1035525444-682003330-1004'.

It was resting in C: > RECYCLER, so when I found it, I tried to delete it, but it would not let me, as it's apparently being used by a program or something. The file there was called 'S-1-5-21-1644491937-1035525444-682003330-1004'.

When ever I try to delete it with Ad-aware or even AVG, it doesn't let me.

nocomment2006, welcome to the forum, your Type and Model number should be on a sticker with a bar code on it as shown on this ste, alternatively you can look in BIOS, (press F1 at boot), where it will show you Type, Model and Serial Number. Please do NOT post your Serial number in the forum. FYI the 8922 Type code refers to a Lenovo 3000 C200 system for which drivers can be found here

what kind of printer will connect to this type of computer

Answer:what kind of printer works /with this kind of comp...

It can be a bit confusing... You need either a Google Cloud Ready printer connected to your internet or you need a Windows/Apple computer with Chrome installed, connected to your internet, sharing an older printer. Once you have either of those setup you can print through Google Cloud Print.

Hi everybody, got some troubles

My old memory, Kingston 1GB PC3200 CL3 148-Pin DIMM Kit (512x2) fits and works perfectly, but I just bought a 2GB kit: Crucial 2GB 240-Pin DIMM PC4200 UNBUFF

The problem is (you've probably worked it out by looking at the mem specs) is that the slot on the new memory doesnt match up with the bar going accross my memory bank.

Which part of the memory specifications defines where abouts the slot is on the actual memory module is?

My motherboard is a GA-7S741M

Soz if im not very good at explaining,

can anyone help?

Answer:I bought the wrong kind of memory... what's the right kind?
