Preferred Solution: typing cursor disappears when typing and deselects typing box

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: typing cursor disappears when typing and deselects typing box

Check Control Panel mouse properties. See if the hide pointer while typing option is set

If it is, untick the checkbox apply the change. Then OK out of the mouse properties

Just got in a new Pictek mechanical illuminated keyboard. I've noticed that while typing, say the word "discussion", I may get as far as the letter "c" and then notice that even though I've typed the entire word the computer has topped at "c". I then have to left-click my mouse to make the flashing cursor reappear in order to continue typing. As you have no doubt gathered by now I am not a touch typist so I watch the keyboard rather than the page while typing.

It's odd to note that this has not happened at this site while typing but does happen all the time when typing an email, for example.

Any thoughts?

Typing cursor disappears after very short time, perhaps 1 second, and has to be restored by mouse click - making typing very slow - it took half a minute to type "perhaps".This seems to happen quite irregularly, at times I may be able to type several words without any trouble, such as this sentence, and then back comes the dreaded disappearing act. Also, in Internet Explorer, when I pull down a menu it often disappears before I have time to dig down to the item I want. Could this be connected?Any suggestions will be most welcome.

Answer:typing cursor disappears

Could be any number of things. Let's rule out malware - please do a full scan with both your anti virus utility as well as MalwareBytes

Every few seconds the cursor disappears and I have to move the mouse back to where I was typing and left click. When this happens the browser area also turns grayish until I left click. So frustrating!! Have tried all the suggestions I have found online such as unclicking the "hide pointer while typing" box. Thanks!

I have had this problem for nearly a month. When I type anywhere in IE it does this: "the quick rownfx jumped overthe lazy dg". It works fine in Firefox (but I dont like it) and works fine in Notepad or Wordpad etc. Here is what I have done so far.

Replaced Keyboard. (Gates you owe me $15.)
Gone though the "Add-ons" one by one.
Uninstalled Google Earth.
Uninstalled Itunes.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support.
They had me turning things on and off and still no solution. (I had plans to go see Jeff Dunham so I had to go. He was great BTW.)

Everything I have searched for has never had a solution.

On my Dell tablet Windows 8.1 when I use the onscreen keyboard the content of the screen shifts upward so what I'm typing isn't covered by the keyboard. My Surface Windows 8.1 doesn't do that which is very inconvenient as I can't see what I'm typing unless turn it sideways into portrait mode. Is there an adjustment for this? I hate the Dell and love the Surface except for this keyboard issue.

I own a Lenovo 3000 y410  and as my title indicates it is constantly typing q even without  touching the keyboard. This doesn't seem like it is a physical problem because i was able to take the key totally off ( so that there was nothing on the sensor), and clean this area with compressed air. Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks

I recently updated my laptop (Lenovo Z570) to Windows 10. Now whenever I'm trying to type anything (my password to log onto the computer, within a web browser, in a Word doc, etc) it will all of a sudden act as if I clicked somewhere else and doesn't acknowledge what I'm typing anymore. And then a second or two later it will recognize me typing again and allow me to type. It does not pick up where it left off though, it will just resume from whichever key I'm hitting at that moment. It took me double the length of time just to type this paragraph because it keeps stopping every few seconds.

Answer:Windows 10: Laptop now randomly stops typing while I'm typing anywhere. How can I fix this?

same problem here on my asus notebook, its really bad on windows central forums, I hope someone comments with a fix?

Do hope you can help.

I type a few words in any program and then my Tecra A11 stops typing and there is no cursor or responsiveness until I click on the page I was typing on, reposition the cursor and I can then start typing again.

It's taken me several "clicks" to get this amount of text typed and this is driving me crazy. I can't seem to find why it is doing it.

Have you any ideas please?

Answer:Tecra A11 - typing stalls every few words in the middle of typing

It is not easy to understand what happen exactly.
Maybe I understand you wrong but i think the certain window where you are typing becomes inactive and you must activate it clicking on it.

Have i understood you right?

I changed my OS form vista to windows 7 home premium 32bit, since changing I'm facing problem when I'm typing.

The typing arrow move by its self while typing. for example if I'm writing a sentence the arrow suddenly move to beginning of the sentence or middle etc.

example : *I'm typing now* - * I'm tynowping*

its like I'm clicking there but I'm not!

I'm using Lenovo T400 and I updated all the drivers.

Answer:Moving typing error when typing

Dear Luna333,
Welcome! Sorry for the delay. Are you using a mouse OR the Touch pad(laptop). A moving cursor is quite common for laptops. I guess there is a way to disable the touch pad and allow use of the mouse.

I opened a notepad that I had previously saved(under the title "girlfriend") and then began to type more information onto it. I was going along fine and had typed much. Then, I looked up after typing some more and the notepad was not on the screen and not in listed in the taskbar.
I did the following:
1) I pressed alt-tab and it was not listed.
2) I then closed all open tasks and then pressed alt-tab again and nothing showed at all
3) I reopened the notepad "girlfriend" from My Documents and the newly typed information was not there
4) I left for about 2 minutes and when I got back the screen showed another copy of the notepad titled "girlfriend" in the taskbar (so now two were "open"). I opened this new one and it had an "error" message that said SOMETHING like: The notepad(or maybe it said function) has been stopped(or maybe it said closed) by the user. (I didn't get the exact words written down). The message gave the option to click OK and I did and the message and the open notepad behind the "error" message closed.
So, I lost the typed material as the orignally opened notepad "closed itself"(even though I was never prompted to save changes) and it then perhaps opened itself back up with a strange screen message AFTER I reopened the basic "girlfriend" notepad from My Documents.
What happened? Is there any way I can recover the valuable typed text? Is there some key or combo of keys on a keyboard that would close a notepad and that were accidentally hit,... Read more

Hi, Everyone- when typing on a new Asus EEE 1015, with Win 7, the cursor will suddenly jump backwards to an earlier spot in the text. This happens a lot, and makes it difficult to type anything.

I googled and saw this problem for many systems and OSs, but it seems like mainly a laptop and netbook problem. some people have erduced sensitivity on touchpads, or have updated touchpad drivers, or have installed a program that disconnects the touchpad when the keys are being used.

We know we are not touching the touchpad accidentally. you can really perch your fingers way above, and the jump still happens. We have decreased the sensitivity on the touchpad, and the jumping still happens.

We also have an Asus EEE 1005 Win XP, for almost a year, with absolutely no cursor jumping.

Any info specific to this set-up? I would love to hear any insights, before I go into a long routine of upgraing BIOS, upgrading touchpad drives, etc.

Answer:Cursor jumping Asus Eee 1015, cursor moves when typing

As the PC is new I would return it under warranty as this is most likely a hardware issue.

The only quick fix that might work is to reinstall the touchpad drivers from the Asus site. You could also check in the touchpad settings to see what is set for making the cursor disappear during typing, change the setting from whatever it is at present and see if that helps.

Yeah, Lenovo's touchpad driver for XP is corrupted: it won't decompress. It's no problem though: just download and install the generic synaptic touchpad driver from: pick the OS and bitlevel you want. The generic drivers have every option the Lenovo driver for Vista has, including accidental touchpad tapping protection, horizontal scrolling, and so forth.-Warr

Hi, Im hoping someone can help as its starting to get me angry now and I cant find a solution. Sorry if its not a vista problem but not sure what the problem is.

Whenever Im typing something just like this question now my cursor keeps dissapearing off screen every 10 seconds or so and I have to click back on the screen to carry on typing. Its very annoying if Im typing something big as i could be in the middle of a word and it just stops and I need to click back on the window to carry on. Its as if the cursor clicks off the screen and makes the window inactive and I have to click back on the window im using to make it active again.

It also wont let me watch any streaming video in full screen. Like you tube for example, if i select full screen it lasts about 10 seconds and then resets to normal size. Very frustrating. I turned off the touchpad on my laptop but it still doesnt make any difference. I have also scanned for spyware and virus's but no joy.

has anyone had this problem before and fixed it?

While typing a document, a sound will occur and I will lose my curser. Subsequent typing does not appear on the screen. I have to click where I want to type to reset the cursor. This happens frequently while typing. This occurs in my Word Processor, in my email, or anyplace I type. I found that the Title Bar also dims at that time and if I click on the Title Bar the cursor will return. My operating system is Windows XP. There are no error messages.

Answer:Loss of cursor while typing

What "sound" are you hearing? It sounds like something is happening that changes the active window selection - that's why the title bar dims out, it is no longer selected. Essentially, something is making you change programs so that you're no longer typing in Word, but whatever mystery program is popping up is the question.

Next time this happens hit Ctrl+ALT+Del and look for any suspicious processes that are running that may be the culprit. If you can't find anything, download Hijack This (, install it to C:\Program Files, close all browser windows, run it, do a System Scan only, click Save Log when it finishes and copy/paste the contents of the notepad that pops up into this thread.

When I am typing, emails, chat msgs, etc and I am careful to avoid the touchpad, my cursor will automatically move back to the front or middle of verbiage I have already typed, and cause over typing.

Answer:Moving cursor while typing

Hi there

This is a really annoying problem that sometimes appears on laptops - it can make the computer almost unuseable for input.

Two possible solutions --

1) Disable the touchpad completely when using a mouse -- you might need to install the generic synaptic touchpad driver rather than the specific one for your computer in order to disable the touchpad.

2) Video driver is not correct.

Note also the problem might only occur when you are actually on the Internet - and even then only on some ISP's / Wifi connections - no idea why either.

This is a HIDEOUSLY irritating problem - but it's very hard to explain to those who've never had it. Usually finding a touchpad driver that allows you to disable the touchpad solves the issue -- note you might have to uninstall your current one and load the generic driver.

Hi, I have windows 8, my computer is brand new and all of a sudden my cursor started moving while typing. It doesn't matter what program I am using whether it is the internet or word, it still moves and it always moves to the left messing up my sentence. Is there something wrong with my computer or do I need to do an update that I am not aware of. I have made sure my hands are not touching the mouse pad on the computer and that doesn't seem to make a difference, I have also made sure that the mouse is set to not show while typing but it is still doing it. Hello. I'm new to the forum so please pardon if this is not in the right section.

Here is an issue I need help with: I have a Dell EliteBook 8460p, with Intel CORE i5, Windows 7. It says Dell on the laptop lid but reads HP on the screen. Whenever I try to type any kind of content at all, the cursor simply jumps around, usually jumping up 3-6 lines. This makes coding impractical and sending a basic e-mail or writing a blog post can take triple the time it usually would since the cursor is jumping all around while I type.

I see that the Scroll/num lk button is lit but I can't depress it to turn the lithht off and I'm wondering if this is what's causing the issue. If it is causing the issue, there's does not seem to be any way (that I can it see now) to turn it off. Just typing this paragraph cause the cursor to jump up or 2-3 sentences so I've had to retype things multiple times.

Can anyone please help? Thank you.

Hello, I am having this very recurrent issue of the freezing cursor while typing or even just pressing a key on the keyboard. In fact, I have reached the parameters, tried to set the activation delay after pressing a key to "None, always active" but this option doesn't work. It freezes anyway when I push a key. I have tried to uninstall the factory driver (the one distributed by HP) and also installing drivers directly from Synaptics. Nothing works. The only way I have found to make my cursor moving while pressing a key is by completely uninstalling the Synaptics drivers but the problem is I can't scroll with two fingers anymore and above all, at the first reboot that I make, Windows 10 automatically reinstalls the Synaptics drivers and the problem with them. I am 100% up-to-date, as I have Windows Update and the HP Support Assistant running at all time. All the other students in my class have the same issue, we all are developper students and NONE of us, nor the teachers or other students from more advanced classes could manage to fix this problem. Has anyone found a solution ? Thank you very much.

I've been plagued with erratic cursor movements while typing. The cursor jumps to a new place and typing continues there, or it will jump someplace totally outside the area. I've switched mice 3 times now - same problem with each one. ive changed ports as well. It's driving me mad! Weird thing is, it's only been happening in the last 3 or 4 months and ive had the laptop for a few years so it shouldnt be whether the touchpad is enabled or not. Im on a Gateway laptop with Vista Home Premium. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Answer:Cursor jumping around while typing

If the touchpad is enabled, the cursor will jump around when you type.
Installing a mouse doesn't disable the touchpad. You have to do it.

If you always use a mouse, then make sure you disable the touchpad.

I am having trouble with moving my cursor. When ever I hold down any key, I cannot move my cursor around on the desktop, but I can move it if I hold down the CTRL key. I have a Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad and a Standard PS/2 Keyboard, & I have a Windows 8.1 HP Laptop. I also had a similar problem like this before, but instead of not being able to move my cursor, I was unable to click. However, I am able to click while typing, but cannot move the cursor. Hi Jlrock,

What you want to do is move the PalmCheck settings to minimum. You will need to go to Start, type "Mouse" in the Search bar, click on Mouse in the search results, click on the Device Settings tab in the Mouse Properties window, Click on the Settings button, click the expand for Pointing, the expand for Sensitivity, Select PalmCheck, and move the bar in the upper right window down to Minimum, then click Apply!

(not sure if this is the right board, but it seems feasible that it might be malware)

Hello... been having this problem for a little over a week...

I will be sitting here minding my own business when my typing cursor will just up and go away... which means my typing STOPS where I was when the cursor went away...
When this happens I have to manually click on the spot again to start typing again... it does it every 5-10 seconds at least when I am typing into a text/chat box.

It seems to be something is stealing the cursor's focus away from the active window, but my window title bar never changes color (like it does when you click outside of an open window)

I have tried using TweakUI and setting it so the focus cant be stolen from the active window, but it still happens...
Also... my mouse cursor never moves from the spot I leave it at.

It has happened about 15 times since I started typing this post...

Any clue what the problem could be?

Answer:Typing cursor will just DISAPPEAR...

Do you have a standard wired keyboard or is it wireless?

Are you sure you do not have any keyboard hardware problems?

The only way we can truly rule out malware is by having you follow ALL the steps below.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)

I like small icon. Most of the icons will fit in the three lists easily.Choose the icon with mouse.Click the device (settings) tab.Click the settings button. On the sensitivity option, click the plus sign.Highlight the palm check (click), on the right side move the slider to the needed level. Highlight touch sensitivity under the sensitivity heading too. Move the slider here as well.If this is not a laptop, seek out new drivers from the manufacturere. Run Windows updates.I'm learning.

I am having an issue with my computer reading boxes from my input that look similar to []. When I use a readkey method in a program it will display that the input it is reading is a 255 which is ancii for 'blank' if I understand right. I believe the boxes are the visual representation of a blank?

I am using windows 7 ultimate on a dell inspiron 1501. Any ideas what in the world would cause it to continue reading this input? The thing that is strange is it only happens during a readkey call in code or a program that uses a similar method to type with such as a java application that is used to show work for homework. Things such as threads like this, or word processors or notepad etc don't do this.

I used to have this problem and it went away and now it's back. I don't remember how I got rid of it so I'm looking for some help.

The problem is that, as I'm typing on my Gateway Windows XP laptop using the cursor in the laptop, the cursor jumps to somewhere else in my text and I don't even realize it until a few letters after so I continuously have to delete what letters ended up getting put in the wrong place and bringing the cursor back to where I want to type. This happens often as I'm typing and ends up deleting words too and is extretmely frustrating. Please help!!

Has anyone figured out why my cursor would jump to another spot on the page when I am typing text? I looked at previous postings and I didn't see a solution. It can happen to me in any program I'm using, but I mostly see it in Microsoft Outlook 2003. It can jump anywhere; I've seen it jump when I wasn't even typing, just sitting there thinking about what to type. I have a Lenovo laptop and run XP on it. This has happened in Windows Live email as well. This problem happens a lot. I looked at my mouse settings under my control panel and I don't have a choice in pad sensitivity, but I don't think that is the problem with the jumping.

My old HP laptop was doing that for quite some time before it eventually bugged the crap
out of me to finally take it apart and give the keyboard a good cleaning.
That fixed it. Nothing as irritating as typing a sentence and it's putting the characters
in the middle of another sentence or paragraph or where it feels like putting it.
It just wore my patience down.
Good luck.

I have a HP pavilion dv2000 laptop about 4 months old. I have the "jumping cursor" problem. The cursor will jump around the screen when I'm typing (I've had to correct this email 4 times already. Turning off the touch pad stops the problem but so does typing on another computer. I've tried a number of things to no avail. It is an intermittent problem in that it doesn't do it every day. When it does it, it does it bad.  I have experimented and I'm sure that I'm not touching the cursor pad as I type. I do often touch the case in the area around the touchpad. I'm guessing this is a grounding issue but can't prove that so far. I like this laptop but because of this problem, I'm unlikely to buy another HP. Any ideas, anyone? Alex

Answer:cursor jumps around when typing

If you are swearing off an entire comptuer manufacturer because one product you bought from them had an intermittant issue that could be fixed with a single service, then more power too you, but that is a poor basis for condeming an entire brand. As far as troubleshooting your issue goes, you might have a grounding problem, i'll back up your diagnosis there, obviously the issue will be hard to verify via phone support, if you call into HP, and are in warranty, you can have the computer sent in to let them check. They would probably replace the chassie or touchpad itself for free under warranty.

My computer is doing the same. Cursor just jumps to the top right corner. It is a desktop, not a laptop, so it is not a problem of the touchpad. And somedays it does it and somedays not. I have Windows 10. I´ve seen this problem comes up in different brands and different Windows... not any real solution somewhere?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1526.

My cursor jumps around when I type documents. I don't think it's a touch pad issue. I do think it's a software glitch. It appears to happen most frequently when I get to the end of a line of type, although that is not always the case.

The motherboard has been replaced and it still happens.

What should I do? I'm about to pitch this laptop out the window!

Sounds like a similar problem I have using an Acer 5335-2553. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the driver and/or software associated with the touchpad to see if that helps?

Also, have you tried changing the touchpad sensitivity and/or other settings?

when I am typing, the cursor seems to jump back to the beginning or middle of the sentence and I am typing the next word at the beginning or in the middle of a previous word.  I haven't accidentally hit the wrong key or anything and this is very annoying as I have to backspace and hit the end button or  move the cursor (if it is not on the same line)to bring the cursor back to where it should be.  Is there anything I can do to stop this?  I had to bring the cursor back to where it should be 4 times while typing this.  I hope this is the right forum to bring this question to.  thanks

I see a bit of chatter on this here and on the web, but no solutions that I can find. When typing in a document, in wordpad for instance, the cursor (and text entry point) will suddenly jump elsewhere.  Typically up a couple of lines.  Since it happens while typing, I end up corrupting the document. Disabling the touch pad does not solve the problem. Clues? Z.

If you have a restore point going back some time, that may be worth a try. You could make a restore point now, then if using the old restore point does not fix it, at least you can get back current.

Answer:Why does the cursor disappear while typing?

Hello and welcome to Windows Central with your first post!
What device are you referring to? If a PC, are you referring to the typing cursor or the mouse/touchpad cursor?
If you're referring to the mouse/touchpad cursor, the disappearance of it depends on where you're typing. For example, right now while typing here in Microsoft Edge, my mouse cursor didn't disappear; however, if I head over to Notepad and begin typing there the cursor would disappear - nonetheless, as soon as I move the mouse or touch the touchpad the cursor re-appears instantly and it doesn't seem to affect my typing.

Keyboards and mice function off interrupts. Check to see what's running that might interfere or keep the processor tied up. Laptops are almost always overburdened with unnecessary crapware. They're setup for newbies and check this or that, update this or that and monitor everything. Once you have a few months of experience with a PC it's time to get rid of the training wheels.

Perhaps this has something to do with your cursor problem. Just a thought.

While typing in any text box or word doc, my cursor disappears and I have to click back to where I'm typing to be able to type again. The cursor is not moving to another area. It acts as if I clicked outside the text box. It's not an issue with touchpad. I dislike touchpads and have disabled it and attached a logitech optical mouse. The issue started before I was using the logitech mouse, so I don't think it's that either.

This may not solve your particular problem, but I encountered something similar on my HP Envy dv7 laptop. The active window would loose focus about every 5 to 10 seconds, and it was driving me crazy. Turns out it was a setting in the included HP SimplePass software for the fingerprint scanner. Once I disabled the Launchsite setting the problem disappeared.

Firstly, let me say I've checked and unchecked the option in Mouse Settings and this changed nothing.

Basically, when typing in mIRC, Windows Explorer, or MSN, my cursor disappears. In Firefox or AIM, it doesn't. I have no clue what else to try. I also notice it only disappears when my cursor is on the window of said programs. If it's in the mIRC window, it'll disappear when I type. When it's outside of the window, it won't.

I'm on XP Home with SP2.

Also to note, I had my friend try this and his also doesn't seem to work.

Hi, I have this problem with my laptop Sony VAIO VGN-NS11J.
The problem is that while typing text the Cursor will either jump back into previously typed text or will sometimes initiate another page on it's own.
This is very annoying as I cannot type well enough to watch the screen and type - and I have to look at the keys as I type.
This then necessitates me having to go back correct and re-type my text.
I have windows 7 installed on this laptop.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer:Why does the cursor jump to another line when I'm typing?

I am assuming you are on a laptop with a touchpad? In which case the pointer speed and tapper settings need to be adjusted - just as you would change the settings of a mouse.
I don't know what model you have but as a general rule go into control
panel where you should find reference to touch pad - then pointer options.
You will probably be given options so you can click on advanced/advanced features setting - click on settings in pointer speed and tapping setting box - you probably then need to uncheck the "enable tap" box.
Alternatively, you could attach a usb or wireless mouse to your laptop which should give you better control.

I've been having this problem a lot over the past year or so where I might be typing a sentence (and I think this only happens when posting at message boards) and sometimes in the middle of a word the cursor will suddenly jump to another place in the paragraph. As an example, it happened just now. When I was typing the word "sentence" above, in the middle of typing the word, the cursor jumped up to the title and the "ten" part of the word got mixed in with the word "typing" in the thread title. Sounds more complicated than it is, just wanted to give that as an example...and oh, it just happened again haha, while I was typing "give." I'm not sure if this happens to me in Word too, but I don't think so. Anyone have an idea why the cursor would just randomly and suddenly jump to another point in the text?

I suddenly have what looks like 2 separate, overlapping cursor lines that flash (blink) at slightly different speeds. It happens anywhere a text can be entered. How can I determine if there is a corrupted file somewhere, or if there is some sort of malware or keylogger etc., hiding on the machine? The pc runs XP sp3, recently updates ran; Kaspersky Internet Security 2009; ie 7 and firefox browsers as well as word and other progs all exhibit this behavior. Adaware found and deleted a Lovgate worm after Kaspersky cleared off a huer.Generic trojan. The files I submitted turned out to be false positives. The pc effected is networked on a small network and appears to be the only one effected. I don't see any problem software installed but if anything is there that shouldn't be I want it gone! Where to start?

I believe this happens on any typing program, but is most frequent in Hotmail. This happened on a different computer several years ago, but I do not remember how it was fixed.

Good morning:

When I type the cursor will jump to another spot among the text previously typed or even off the page which means I have to grab the mouse, delete the misplaced text and return the cursor to the place where I was typing. This is very annoying and disruptive.

Have spoken to a number of friends and several have claimed to have this problem while others don't know what I am talking about. Seems to have some connection with touch typing using all fingers. Have began to wonder if it is connected with the fact that I learned to type on a manual 22 inch Remington a thousand years ago and might be hitting the keys too hard.

This problem seems worse with some programs such as e-mails however it seems very solid when typing this question.

Would welcome any suggestions as to why this happens.

My second computer is a Toshiba Laptop also running Win7. I'm not a touch typist and frequently the cursor will jump to another location within the item I'm typing. I don't catch this until a few letters hve been typed and then it requires correcting and retyping. I thought at first it may be my touching the pad while typing but lately I have been very careful to not touch the pad. I normally use a wireless mouse and I tried shutting off the pad but cannot find out how to do it. Any ideas on what might be causing the cursor jump and/or how to turn off the pad?

Please try the following:
Go to Control Panel>Mouse and the "Pointer Options" tab. Uncheck the "Snap To" option and apply. See if it helps any.

You can disable your touchpad either with a built-in button near it, or sometimes a keyboard key combination (FN key) or via device manager.

I'm having trouble with my two month old Dell laptop. This problem started a month ago and is getting worse. I cannot type more than a couple of characters, before my cursor disappears. I have to click again at the end of the passage to continue. As well, while I'm browsing the internet (usually IE 10 but also using Chrome) I will frequently lose my cursor. Let's say I'm scrolling using my mouse, trackpad or keyboard (not clicking though). I will suddenly be unable to continue scrolling. I need to click somewhere in order to reestablish contact and then I can scroll in a variety of ways again. At the moment I lose my cursor, the top of the screen goes from blue to grey. If I allow it to turn grey and wait a few seconds, the grey will flash periodically. It's clear to me that the computer is doing something else that is pulling the cursor away from my screen. Any ideas?

Answer:Mouse/Cursor/Typing problem

Try updating your mouse drivers by following these steps:
a. Press Windows and x key together and select Device Manager.
b. Locate the touchpad driver.
c. Right click on the Touchpad driver icon and click on “Update Driver software”.
d. Click on “Search automatically for Updated driver software” option.

If the driver update doesn't fix the problem, try FN+F3, this disables/enables the touchpad and it may fix the issue. Hope I was of some help!

Open Notepad and see if you get the same problem when you type something.

You may have a keyboard that needs cleaning (with system OFF and keyboard unplugged) or is going bad. From your symptoms this is what I suspect.

My touchpad is a Synaptics TouchPad V8.1 on PS/2 Port

I've also looked at other posts similar to this one, and I've tried to change my Palm Tracking but I can't edit it at all

as you can see the bar is greyed out, and I can't change the slider

Answer:Can't move cursor on touchpad while typing, please help

Welcome to the TenForums.

I think you will find the V8.1 is your firmware. I have older firmware but a very recent driver, V19. I have more tabs and options and I would think your device, being newer should be better. I can move touchpad with select keys depressed.

If you go into your device manager and look at driver I think, and I could be wrong, that you will see a different version number. With this in hand you can see if Lenovo has a newer driver or if Synaptics has a new driver. Watch compatibility, lots of different touchpads. Before updating driver I recommend you create a restore point and maybe even a image using Macrium Reflect. Always good to be able to reverse.

I have a Z560 I have been having trouble with, when I first got the laptop a while back I noticed if my palm touched the rest, at times the touchpad would not respond, and I would have to lift my palm to get it to track again, I thought it was odd and a bit annoying but went on about whatever I was doing. However it has now gotten really bad, the cursor will now jump all over, I can have nothing else touching the computer, other than a single finger (NOT moving) on the touchpad and it will be jumping all over the screen, I uploaded a video so you can see what I mean, from 9 seconds to about 21 seconds, all I have is one finger in the touchpad and I am not moving it, I am keeping it as still as I can but you can see how much it moves, it makes clicking on anything just about impossible. I have run through many things, tried messing with tracking settings, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers etc without any luck, suggestions anyone?

Good day,

Today, I noticed that my mouse pointer is flickinger/blinking very badly when I'm typing something. Interestingly, this only happens when I'm typing in the address bar of Internet Explorer while the cursor is also pointed on the address bar or on the title bar. It also blinks when I'm typing in the address bar while the mouse is pointing on the New Tabs page of Internet Explorer. Typing in Word or in Notepad doesn't cause the issue; it's isolated to Internet Explorer. I have tried turning on and off the checkbox to hide the cursor during typing but that didn't fix anything.

I didn't make any changes recently other than installing the Windows updates of this month yesterday and installing a game today. Running Windows Pro 8.1 64x.

Although I'm quite positive this behavior wasn't there before maybe someone could check if the cursor is behaving the same way on his/her PC?

Not on mine.

Maybe adjust blink rate---

I have a problem with Windows 7 the past few weeks or so, while typing, my typing cursor line will jump to a different spot on the text box, usually back in some of my already typed text. causing it to insert the rest in the middle of words. it can happen to any website or any text field. it is annoying and it makes me lose my train of thought. I read somewhere to keep your hands away from the touchpad but my hands are nowhere near it. they are on the edges of my laptop. so my problem is different. in fact it did it 5 times during this dialog

Answer:typing cursor jumping positions

I hear you, but this problem is soooo common with touchpads.  Buy yourself a cheap mouse and disable the touchpad and see what happens.  I'm betting you won't have the problem any more.  Personally I think touchpads are masochistic devices designed by evil demons.

Maybe you guys can help me with this. I have an employee that has an annoying little problem. Whenever he types in any application, be it an Office application or notpad, the mouse cursor dissapears. Once you move the mouse it reappears exactly where it was and moves normally but when you type again it dissapears. Technically it goes invisible until it is moved. It not hindering anything but it is annoying.

Anybody have a clue?

Answer:Mouse Cursor Dissappears When Typing

start > control panel.

if you have a white background with icons, double click on Mouse.

if you have a blue background with links, click on Classic View on the left hand side and then double click on Mouse.

In Mouse, go to the Pointer Options tab and uncheck "Hide Pointer While Typing".

Ok, I have been having this problem for a month or more...

I am sitting in a Video game chat on AOL typing to my friends and my typing cursor disappears, which makes me stop typing. I then have to reclick the text box in order to start typing again... (Yes, I still look at my hands when I type )

This also happens when I use the AOL browser (intergrated IE), if I am in a chatroom (havent tried when I wasnt in a chat) and I am typing on message boards.. like this one... the cursor for typing will vainsh. But it wont vanish if I use the external IE program.

I think I have it narrowed down to an ad within the game chatroom. It is ran on Macromedia Flash Player, when it reloads or gets to the Loop spot... my cursor disappears. I cant seem to disable the ad at all... and I dont know if I can uninstall Flash to get it to stop.

I have talked to one person on AOL live Help about it and she told me several things to try: Lowering hardware acceleration, rebuilding the AOL adapter and using some sort of tech thing on the AOL CD... nothing worked.

I have tried the WinXP Powertools option to stop other items from stealing focus from the window I am on, but that doesnt work either.

My cursor has vanished about 50 times while I have been typing this...

Please help me if you can...

I have Dell Latitude D510.  Recently the cursor has been jumping back when typing, so I find the last few letters appear earlier on in the document.  It's not a Word issue, as happens sometime when typing in Google.
Touchpad only has basic features activated.
Seems to relate to when I rest on the laptop, as if I hover it seems ok - but this is impractical & a bad typing posture!
Other non-Dell forums talk of several causes and several cures, none of which help!
Any ideas, or do I need a new laptop?

Answer:Cursor jumps back when typing

I suspect you are accidentally touching something on the touchpad.  I have that trouble when I'm using my wife's Acer laptop, as I'm used to typing using a regular keyboard on a Desktop PC.  Actually, I have a lot of problems trying to type on any laptop keyboard.

May I ask you what notebook model do you have exactly?

I had the same issue on my notebook but this was not really an issue but a mistake while typing.
I touched the touched surface accidentally while typing.
So I disabled the touchpad using FN + F9 and this has ?solved? my issue?
But as I said above; it was more my mistake?

I am running Windows 7 home premium 32 bit. When I am typing, whether it be on a message board, chat or in word, the cursor will jump anywhere on the page. Often this causes a mess and takes time to delete and replace. There is no rhyme or reason and it happens every time I attempt to type. i hope there is a fix here. I am on a Lenovo laptop computer. Thanks
