Windows XP - End of Life - a bit like W2K bug that never happened

Question: Windows XP - End of Life - a bit like W2K bug that never happened

Hi there
I'm surprised at all the Windows XP end of life hysteria -- probably done by the same bovine set of bozos who thought Cars would stop running and most computer applications would fail on Jan 1 2000 (the so called Y2K problem - probably the biggest non event in the entire history of computing).

On Apr 9 your Windows XP machine will still run just fine (and on apr 10 too etc).

Simply VIRTUALIZE it and only use Internet from say a W7 desktop. Modern hardware will run Virtual machines at almost Native speed and unless you are into heavy gaming / graphics then VM machines will certainly work for you --they've come a HUGE way in the last few years.

With Unity features common XP corporate applications can easily be placed on a W7 desktop so the user just has to "point and click".

I can't understand what all the corporate brouha is about - unless it's just a few consultants trying to cash in on a few bucks while the going is good.

I said the same in 2000 about the Y2K stuff -- all those expensive consultants at 1000 - 2000 USD a day BACK THEN were all sitting around doing not much except drinking in Local Taverns and laughing all the way to the Bank. !!

While I.T wages have slumped in the last 15 years (seems the only profession I know where that's happened) the same scenario in principle although slightly less booze being consumed in the taverns is being enacted by the "Consultancy Firms" who advise on how to migrate off XP.

Reminds you of "Deja -vu or Ground hog day" all over again)

Wish I could have got into the act (both then and now !! although I'd want the wages they were getting back then. ).

Cheers

Preferred Solution: Windows XP - End of Life - a bit like W2K bug that never happened

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows XP - End of Life - a bit like W2K bug that never happened

MS itself is playing up the XP end of life hysteria in attempt to move people off of XP. Not all the credit can be given to the "sky is falling" individuals.

Hi, I brought my X220 in 2011 with a 9 cell battery and would get about 14 hours battery life out of it. The battery aged and would not hold full capacity so I brought a new 9 cell battery from Lenovo in December 2015. But the new battery only gives me 4 hours of battery life. What happened to the other 10 hours I used to get in 2011? I dared two expert hackers to destroy my life. Here’s what happened.

Pretty fascinating article I found while browsing the security section of reddit. Just goes to show if someone wants to make your life a living hell, and has the skills to do it, they can. Fortunately, most of us are to boring for anyone to really care about, but we should still be using good security practices to keep our private life, private.

Hi, I have had my T430 since August of 2012 at the start of college. I am currently running windows 8.1 pro and I recently just noticed my battery life issues and after installing lenovo settings I discovered that my battery's capacity is at 27% of the original capacity. The battery life is really bad, e.g. it says 15 minutes remaining at 25% on POWER SAVER mode.  I have google this and it said to "reset my battery" but unfortunately 8.1 Lenovo power manager doesn't have that feature.  I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what to do?  Will I just have to get a new battery?

Answer:Lenovo T430 Battery Life 1+ hour on life saver

you would have to have a pre-Windows 8 OS to gain that crucial battery reset function. This is one reason why i dislike running Win 8 on ThinkPad.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Sorry, my logical mind is acting up again. Why no Win 9?

Answer:What happened to Windows 9?

Quote from: dangkhoa on Today at 10:31:32 AMSorry, my logical mind is acting up again. Why no Win 9?  This will bring a lot of dumb answers. The accepted resewn is that some developers only looked at the fists numeral and the if it was a 9 then the developer would assume windows 95, 98 or 98se.So MS make the new OS 10  to prevent them for thinking s was an ealier version of windows.https://www.extremetech.com/computing/191279-why-is-it-called-windows-10-not-windows-9Quotehere?s also the fact that the name of each Windows release doesn?t actually match the real version number. For example, Windows 8.1 is actually version 6.3 of Windows. Windows 10 is version 6.4. The last time the release name actually matched the version number was the enterprise-focused Windows NT 4.0, which was released back in 1996. Windows 2000, which was called NT 5.0 during development, was actually version 5.0. Windows XP was version 5.1. Windows Vista was 6.0, Windows 7 was 6.1, Windows 8 was 6.2, and Windows 8.1 is version 6.3.Myself, I think it was more about marketing. The 9 would sound so dumb. Like a 10 of anything is the best. A 9 is not the best.  And look at Apple. They already had a ten, the roman-numeral X. Marketing rules above logic.

Please help a girl down on her luck,

I don't know what happened, either Windows XP Home Edition
died or my hard drive failed me. All I know is I have no windows,
just a blank screen & yes I double checked my monitor. All I know
is I have no way to reach anything on my hard drive.

I called Microsoft & a kind tech worked with me for quite awhile
he tried several times in different ways, to get into safe mode. I
pressed F8 enough times to convince me it just wasn't working.
He did his best, tried everything he could but to no avail. We did
find that my files were still on my 80 gig hard drive. He did
caution me against running any diagnostics for fear of losing
those oh so important files.

He said there are places that could help me recover the
information on my hard drive. He said all I would have
to do is take my hard drive to them & they would copy it
to CD or DVD. Well I went to my sister's house to use her
PC to look for these people online. I found some people
that say they can do this but they want $500.00 dollars or
more to do it!!!! There is no way I can afford that!

Isn't there another way? Can't I save my files? Somehow
copy my files to CD or DVD myself? Does anyone know
what I can do to get to my files to save them? I had just
put a ton of photos I was storing on my PC to upload to my
paid & insured online storage site. They can not be replaced.:>(

Please, somebody help I am drowning!!!

Ok so about 2 months ago I reinstalled Windows. I have been very good with how I treat my pc. Shut it off properly, keep files organized, have virus checker running and do scans periodically. All of a sudden I go to boot up one day and it says boot.ini missing. Booting from c:\windows. I was like wtf? It happened to boot up fine but ever since then it always does this and boots up slow. Recently in Windows I had a error with all drivers and had to reinstall them all or Windows would get all these weird errors that it couldnt even explain. Now I can multitask worth a ****. I am typing now and it lags. I have checked processes with msconfig and started with bare minimum. I have a p4 3.08ghz 1gb ram x800gto a 30gb maxtor (windows), 55gb seagate (backups), 120gb maxtor (games). Just recently though I switched out case, powersupply, cd/dvd reader, and rounded ide cables. What could be causing this? It feels like Windows is going to fall apart on me. Jeeez

The lag is obvious in typing, internet surfing, and music. Games run perfectly fine or better than ever. Weird! Oh and my temps are fine. Everything idles below 30 (gpu 26 and cpu 28) and maxs out at about 40 (gpu 37 and cpu 39).

Answer:What the **** happened to Windows?

open the run box (winkey+R) and type sfc /scannow

Answer:what happened to my Windows?

Does everything still work? Could be your icon is somehow messed up.

I'm probably going to be flamed by you for saying this, but seeing how you posted a pic of a folder filled with programs, I'd like to ask if there's a possibility you're using a warez copy of Windows because it might've been a bad or infected copy.

Situation: Last week burned a number of documents to a particular CD-RW. Was able to access files as needed. Today needed to access files and there is nothing there. No files, and according to drive, the disc has all but 400 kb free. As if it were blanked. I definitely did not erase it. That would be more than "slip of the thumb", could spontaneous erasing occur???When I put into burner, and went through "my computer", there are no files there. Can't find my files, don't know what could have happened to them. Computer is less than a month old. Running Windows XP Pro. Burner is Artec VOM-12E48X. CD-RW disc is a Sony. Having no trouble reading any other cd-rws. Thanks for your consideration.

Sorry, my logical mind is acting up again. Why no Win 9?

Answer:What happened to Windows 9?

Because it would conflict with code that searched for Windows 95 and 98, which looked for Windows 9 no matter what followed 5 or 8 etc, and so they went with 10.

I installed windows 10 build 10080 on my Lumia 730.
Now i have got notification saying windows 8.1 (8.10.14234.375) is installed.
Your phone is up to date and good to go.
A restart has been scheduled.
I am confused that how can my phone install update of windows 8.1 when i am on Windows 10 TP.
Should i restart the phone to complete installation, is there any risk doing that.
Plz reply fast.

Answer:Got windows update 8.10.14234.375 while on Windows 10 build 10080, how could this has happened?

Using a TP always includes taking a risk.
But if a restart is scheduled better do it and watch what happens.
If you not doing it now it will happen next time if you switch on your phone (after you switched it off) or at the scheduled time.
Good luck

I have my automatic updates set to the "notify me but don't install until I say so" option. There was some traffic and the little shield appeared on the bar on the bottom right of the screen, there was some more traffic and the little shield disappeared. I looked at the setting in Control Panel and it still says to notify only - normally it looks, gives the shield, I click on that and there's a list, I say what to download. I checked the processes and I had wuauclt.exe running in SYSTEM and also my username. Can anybody explain what happened? Is Microsoft downloading things that I don't know about?

I had the same thing just now, the little yellow shield came on , and showed it was downloading , it got to 40% , and then the shield just disappeared , i checked but could not see any new updates....?

Try booting the system without the DVD drive attached. If that avoids the error - then it looks like time for a new DVD drive.

As to what the error message means.... no idea. Except for - why are you not using SP2 ?

Here's a remedial question from a Windows 'tard:

Time was I could record any sound that "passed through" my sound card, that is, if it came out my speakers, I could record it using Windows' little Record utility. It was easy to record snippets of movies, for example, that were playing on my CD drive, then make .wav files from them.

That functionality seems to have been lost. Or I'm lost. Probably the latter. Could someone find me? Thank you.

Answer:What happened to Windows Recorder?

Hi srleslie

Type "sound recorder" into the start menu. Think that's what your looking for

So I reset but nothing happened please help.

I am using a wireless device to have my windows 7 connected to the Internet...Now whenever I am trying to access some websites it will not load [calling it a dns error], even if it loads it loads half without images and flash objects, and in any case if it loads it loads well [whose probability is in fact negligible]....now when I go for a download with a download manager at first it does not initiate a download, but if download is initiated [after multiple tries] the file is, however, downloaded with nominal speed...

Next when I use the internet in virtual machine [guest os ubuntu] I have my internet connected well...there is no such error...no multiple tries etc...

So I am just suspecting windows 7 to create some horror of my internet...looking forward to you guys for help...

I just purchased an HP 2in1. Still getting used to the interface but starting to really like it until a change that I did not initiate. Not sure, but it seemed to happen when I tried using the laptop as a tablet. Now the Start Menu function disappeared, my screen icons are no longer visible and all apps run in full screen mode and I cannot change? I also got a new key in the task bar for "back". Anybody have an idea what changed and how I can get it back to where it was?

Answer:Windows 10 UI Changed. What Happened?

I reactivated the tablet and when I went back to the laptop it asked me to get out of tablet mode. This got me back to normal functions!

I was working through the Malware removal instructions. Ran Superantispyware and Malwarebytes, rebooting when instructed. Ran Combofix, and the rest. Finished everything I could do and rebooted one final time to see if the popup I had been seeing on startup was gone. It was but a new one appeared, telling me my Windows was counterfeit. WHAT HAPPENED?

I bought my system at least six years ago. It came with a recovery disc and documentation. Four years ago my harddrive failed and I installed a new one my self and used the recovery disc to install windows. If I remember correctly part of the installation process was going to Microsoft site and validating it.

Two years ago a malignant Securom infestation trashed my computer. The motherboard was broken and one of the memory chips failed. My son's roommate replaced the motherboard and CPU with spares he had and installed XP Pro from a disc he was no longer using as he had upgraded to Vista. I've read the license and it says it is allowed to be used on one computer at a time. I've been regularly updating at the Microsoft site for the past two years with no hint that my installation was not kosher.

So WHAT HAPPENED?

My desktop is now black. I can put wallpaper back on it but as soon as I open a window the desktop is black again when I return to it. There is a star in my systray and an intermittent popup on the desktop telling me my windows is counterfeit. I am very unhappy.

When I had Windows 7 there was File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help across the top left of the screen, each with drop down boxes with options. In Windows 10 those items are not there. How do I access them with all the drop down options?

If I could talk to the people in charge at Microsoft I would like to tell them that different is not better. Better is either faster or easier to use or both.

You must be referring to the internet browser. Using W-10 Edge browser the tool bar is not there like it is with IE11 (Internet Explorer). If you were to use IE11 with W10 (yes it is still there with W10) it will be exactly what you are used to.

To whom this may be of interest - and might provide an explanation:

Having recently acquired a new desktop PC equipped with Windows 7, I thought everything went hunky dory - until I was confronted tonight with an unexpected crash. It involved a sudden restart of the machine, in fact a complete reboot. Attached you will find the several logs, files and dumps produced at the time of the crash and reboot, some which were sent to Microsoft - automatically on the demand, as it were, of the OS (these are in a zip file together with a screen shot of the Send to MS dialog+translation of the latter). Only file that is missing is Memory.dmp - too large to upload.

Since I was away for a moment from the machine (nothing special was going on like a download or whatever, it just stood there, waiting for my return) when the incident occurred, I don't know whether this was a genuine BSOD incident or not. Moreover, I never experienced a BSOD restarting the computer all by itself but some of the dumps/logs look suspiciously like belonging to such an occurrence. Therefore, I am also including the report of your own diagnostic utility (which also duplicates some files I gathered myself).

Actually, a few days after the purchase of the PS, as I was busy transferring files and reinstall programs on that brand new machine, there was a sudden, unexpected restart, right in the middle of an operation (writing a short text in Word, certainly nothing that could warrant such a reaction).

I cannot access the app screen on 10.1. I believe there was an auto update and when I logged on again I couldn't access the app screen. I can only see my desktop with all the shortcuts I had before. I have to right click the Windows icon to be able to shutdown/restart and access other places like Control Panel.
The weird thing is that on my wife's log on it's still there but not on mine???
Also, Internet Explorer disappeared from the taskbar and won't stay up there when I drag a shortcut there.

Answer:What happened to my Windows desktop mode?

Oh you mean that you can't open the start menu? Do a quick search online and you'll find a few solutions have been posted. All have varying degrees of success. Best thing to do (what I did as well), create another User Account for the device and use that one as your main account

Answer:Windows Store: Something happened at our end. Waiting a bit might help

You could try hitting the Windows key() and typing wsreset and wait until the store opens. You will see a blank command prompt(which runs the command) for a minute or two, so don't close it, until the store opens.

Hi Guys Remember when we could navigate to windows desktop easily?Well I don't know what happened to windows and they changed the feature or that I don't know how to use the feature anymore.
I used to enjoy using alt+tab to go to desktop ,But now as we use the keys we can only navigate between different open applications as we can see from the screenshot above.
See below for Task view
They added the task view in windows 10.Is it even helpful? Does anyone know if its helpful?
It seems to me that this feature is kind of useless because if sometimes games crash the new desktop doesn't respond much.
I would love to know what others think about this windows feature and is it helpful? what is it really for.
Backing up to my first Picture ,Isn't it kind of annoying that they changed the alt+tab shortcut and or forgot to add the shortcut.
For me sometimes I'm doing studies and navigation is a problem .lol if you know what I mean.
Can'tttttt just go to desktop If you know what I mean
Anyways if someone doesn't get me this is what I was saying.
Anyone knows how to add the old windows alt+tab shortcut to windows 10?

Answer:What happened to windows Alt+Tab desktop shortcut

Try...

Keyboard shortcut to go straight to Desktop: Win key + D

or...

Right-click on taskbar - select Show the Desktop

or...

Right-click on taskbar - select Settings and turn on 'use Peek to preview desktop...'. From now on, if you put the mouse at the far right of the taskbar you'll see the desktop, click in the far right and you switch to it.

Satya Nadella offers brief explanation of how the company decided to skip Windows 9 and release Windows 10
September 30 was the day when Microsoft was expected to announce the new Windows 9 and provide users with a preview version of the operating system, but the company instead came up with something totally unexpected.

Microsoft decided to name its upcoming operating system Windows 10 and thus skip Windows 9, despite the buzz that was created in the last few months and pointing to this particular designation for Redmond?s next OS version.

The company, however, never provided a reason for its decision to skip Windows 9 and go directly to Windows 10, with many people believing that this change of heart was based on its intention to emphasize the huge improvements that it made to the operating system.

The new CEO Satya Nadella took the stage at Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo conference to discuss about Microsoft?s plans in the cloud business and also provided a very short explanation of what happened with Windows 9.
?Windows 9 just came and went?
Nadella didn?t offer too many details on how the company actually decided to go straight to Windows 10, but he did suggest that Windows 9 was just a designation for its operating system and nothing more.

?It came and went,? Nadella explained when he was asked by a Gartner analyst what happened with Windows 9.

While he didn?t provide any specifics, some people claimed that possible app compatibility issues caused b... Read more

Hi, I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. This morning when turning on the computer, it would not boot up windows. There was power going to all parts. I could hear the hard drive turning on, all the fans worked. But the keyboard and mouse were not active because nothing would load, not even the BIOS. The monitor stayed black, but there was a signal going to the monitor. After trying a few things I decided to disconnect both physical Hard Drives from the MoBo. Finally when turning on the computer I got something on the monitor and was able to get into the BIOS. Didn;'t make any changes in the Bios, just happy I got something on the screen. So I turned off the system and hooked up just the Hard Drive that had Windows installed. Turned on the computer and now all of a sudden Windows loads and the message that the Driver for the Hard Drive is being loaded comes on. So what do you think happened? Why would the driver for the Hard Drive just be uninstalled, and even so, why did it not automatically reload the first time I turned on my computer? I didn't install any new software or hardware.
Running: Intel Duo Core 2 Duo 3GHz, 4GB Ram,

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:Windows wouldn't boot up, but now does. What happened?

Hi Sam Saints,

Welcome to the forum, lets see if we can help.

Perhaps an updated driver installed from MS update; perhaps loose or faulty cabling. Your Event log may give you a clue, have you taken a look there?

Is this issue a one-off? or is it reoccurring?

Hello everybody, I'm having issues upgrading to Windows 10 on my Windows 7 PC. I've tried to install it using countless methods - triggering the upgrade via console command, burning an ISO to USB, editing the registry, but on all but one occasion I got the error message described in the title of the thread. On using the method editing the registry, the PC did appear to install it (apart from AVAST Antivirus kept throwing up error messages during the installation, and I had to keep pressing enter to acknowledge them) but upon starting up Windows 7 was still installed.

At the moment I have no idea of what is going on, and the only option I'm left with it doing a clean reinstall of Windows 7 and then trying to upgrade. I should also mention I have all my documents and applications stored on a seperate HDD - will they be affected by the clean install of Windows 7?

Edit: I should mention I have another PC, and did the same steps with the console command, and it installed perfectly.

Answer:Something happened: Windows 10 installation has failed

No, if the files are in separate drive or partition, it will not be affected if you clean install Windows 7. The installation will only touch the drive where you want to install Windows 7. I also had the same error you mentioned and I also resorted to a clean install of Windows 8.1 on one of my machines.

When I turned on the computer yesterday after a stanby break a window opened to tell me that there are applications going and this will slow down the computer.( As far as I knew there was only one application going on) I was given the option to shut down the computer.
When I chose shutdown, a window opened to tell me that someone is using the computer and shutting down will terminate that activity. (These are not the exact words) But I was scared to see that message. I am the only person using my computer and nobody has access to it from a remote station as far as I know. I had help from some one to set up the computer. My question is: Is it possible that there is some setting in the computer that he has made so that he can access my computer whenever it is turned on or on standby mode?

I have all the security update (Service Pack 2) and a good firewall. I also have antispyware software. What should I do to make sure that nobody has remote access to my computer directly. I have a DSL connection to the internet and is left on all the time.

Will appreciate your help. Thank you

Hi,
had windows 7 with all updates installed, Noticed when I viewed installed updates, that the windows 10 upgrade had tried twice and it failed. I located the update and tried three times to download it manually, started off OK, then stopped with the following statement "Something Happened", nothing else, no error.
So I have reformatted and reinstalled windows 7, which means my reserved window 10 will no longer be there. So what happens now, do I just wait, and I suppose they will send it again?
Any ideas
Thanks and Regards

Might be worth mentioning that I'm dual booting with ubuntu and have another partition on the hard drive with ubuntu installed on it along with the swap partition. Here's a picture of the partitions:
Is that what is causing the error? Because quite frankly this error message is vague along with its title "Something happened." I've also tried running the installation with my antivirus and secure boot disabled and still get the same error message at 24 percent.

Ok so I've tried every fix I can find/think of and Windows 10 still will not download on my husbands laptop, mine however upgrade perfectly on the first try.
He has Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack1
Processor is AMD E-350 Processor 1.60 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.60 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System
And it shows Windows is activated
computer is Lenovo b575

The Windows 10 app to do the registration for Windows 10 never came up on his computer, KB2952664 update will install but then it is shown to not be on the computer even though I can see it. When I try to do the update with 54% of the memory available at the point of install, it goes through everything all the way to what was the last screen on my update where it shows, Windows 10 installing, Your computer may reboot several times, Your computer will reboot in a moment, please wait, it sets on that screen for an hour + and then goes back to the Windows 7 desktop with the grey box showing Something happened in the top part and Windows 10 installation failed in the inside.
I can't figure out what is going wrong with this update but it's driving me nuts and I don't like to not be able to figure something out.
Any advice?? Ideas???

I just reinstalled windows, and when I was watching a youtube video, my computer just crashed - BSOD. Maybe I need to reinstall a new soundcard driver, but I am not sure what is my soundcard.
It also seems my keyboard is messed up after reinstall.

A lot of the time, well before the reinstall it said something about BAD_POOL_HEADER and win32skys

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

System specs
Raedon HD 6670 1GB
AMD Athlon II x4 640
Mainboard G41M-P28
PSU seems to be ATX 12V v2,2 EPS 12V
480 Watt
Motherboard seems to be A780LM-M

I am pretty noob at all of this... So my apologizes and I hope you are patient.

Also here is a screenshot

Answer:Random BSOD-s. Just happened again after reinstalling windows.

Mainboard is another name for the Motherboard so with a AMD CPU this is not your mainboard>>Mainboard G41M-P28<< As that is a Intel socket 775 G41 chipset board.

You have a ECS A780LM-M > ECS Web Site

BSOD is blamed on > NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM (24)

Make sure you have the latest chipset drivers form the link to ECS above.

Test the hard drive with the drive manufacturers diagnostic utility.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

So once my computer boots up and connects to the Internet, 10 seconds later my computer shows the blue screen "REGISTRY_ERROR Technical information: STOP: 0x00000051"
This just happened today and I've already tried the Windows Memory Diagnostic method and it didn't work.
My computer specs are:
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1
Dell Inspiron ONE 23RD
Cpu: Intel Pentium CPU Go 20th
Thanks in advance

Answer:Blue screen on windows 7,just happened today

It seems that it should start ok in safe mode. if you try that and it works someone will probably be able to give you further advice on how to repair it.

I had the free version of OneNote 2013 installed in Win 7 Pro. With that version pressing Windows+Shift+N would launch OneNote. Since I upgraded to Win 10 and switched to the built in OneNote 2016 I cannot find a shortcut key to launch it. Is there a key combination to launch OneNote in Win 10 or is there a way to create one? Thanks.

Answer:What happened to Windows+Shift+N to launch OneNote?

Hi,

I am wondering if end-of-life Vista is more dangerous than end-of-life XP. My reasoning is that Vista more closely resembles Win 10 than XP. So as MS was saying, attackers may reverse engineer patches meant for recent OS's into exploits that work on the end-of-life one. So it seems to me that Vista looks more dangerous than XP.

As a matter of background info, I have always kept up with the latest windows update. At one time - up until a few weeks ago - I had options within Windows Updates (in Windows 10), which gave me choices on how I wanted to download the updates. I have Windows 10 Home. Many of my options choices are now grayed out and previously, there were several choices on how I could download windows updates - but no more.
I now have no options at all when it comes to doing Windows Updates (please read on).

Here are several screen shots of my Windows Update page (found within settings).
The first image screen shot shows what my main Windows 10 Update page looks like. In the past I had options where the "Check for Updates" button was. Now that is all gone. All I can do is check for updates and that is all. They then download and install. Even when I uninstall a particular update, when it comes time to do an update again, the previous uninstalled downloads are installed again.
The 2nd image shows the "Restart Options," and again...areas are grayed out and I cannot select whether to turn on or off. How can I get rid of the grayed out areas?
The 3rd image shows "Advanced Options," and although there is nothing strange there, when I click on the "Choose how updates are delivered" link, I get the following page - again, with areas grayed out - along with a notation that says, "Some Settings are Managed by your Organization.&quo... Answer:No longer able to choose options in Windows 10 updates - what happened

'Some settings are... ' means some settings changes have been made.
Nominally this is intended to refer to changes being made via the group policy editor (used by your 'organisation').
However, it also very confusingly can seem to appear when you don't expect it, and so reads meaninglessly. (Well, is MS famous for specific and explicitly helpful error messages?).

You may find that you have made changes in the Privacy settings, or used a tool to control telemetry ('MS spying on you').. or sthg else.

First, if you don't have it, download and install Spybot Antibeacon (free). This is one of the tools to block so-called 'spying'. You may see some coloured bars indicating settings that have been applied.

Click the Undo button.

See what effect that has, and post back with the result.

This is the first time I have every attempted to do a clean install. I set up the users didn't seem to be any problem at the time. I then noticed under the document and users folders that one of them (Madison) was a bright blue color so I tried to delete it and to redo it and when I tried to delete it, a window came up saying "Madison is a Window System folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted." So I went into my users and was going to delete it there and the user Madison doesn't even show up. What do I do? I had already installed other programs and my niece had been using the computer for about 4 months and now and she is having trouble with IE and Firefox not working. Every time she clicks on any of the Firefox or IE .exe icons, nothing happens for Firefox and IE only has a window pop up saying: Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close . . . could this be from that file being in the wrong place or a different issue. Either way, I don't know how to fix either problem. I have researched for two days now nothing has helped. I sure would appreciate any help! I am at my wits end and very discouraged. Thank you in advance for any help.

Sounds like an Operating System issue. If you have a system with Windows 10 preinstalled try this I've not got a new system yet so I've not had the chance to try this new service:

So sometime randomly during the night, my computer restarted itself due to like finish installing some Windows updates, then I awake to find my computer in the setup recovery screen! This is not the first time this has happened! This EXACT same problem occurred about 2-3 days ago, so what I do is I check to see what the setup repair had found and apparently A file called " D:\ci.dll " is a critical boot file & it's corrupt, and now I don't know what to do!? I don't have ANY restore points, no recovery disc, and have no idea what to do which is why I came here. Should I get the file from the same version of Windows 7 from a different computer I have & replace it using Linux booting off a CD? Or what would be the best solution? Because last time, the same file was corrupt, and I did a system restore, btw, if it helps, I have an Acer, 6Gb of Ram, Windows 7 64Bit, 3.2Ghz AMD processor, AMD Radon 6570.
Thanks for ANY Answers

Answer:Windows 7 boot file is corrupt? Second time this has happened!?

yeah the file ci.dll is the base code integrity module.

you can try this for the moment to see if it settles the problem with a windows file.

I've tried several times and I simply can't upgrade to Windows 10 on my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. The instalation process exists with the absurd "Something happened" error. I tried to set the Locale to en/us, and tried to install the ISO through a USB stick but no luck! Earlier I had setup my yoga 2 pro as a dual boot with both Windows 8.1 and Linux. Although I've never made any change to my OEM drives, since I went dual boot the one key recovery service also doesn't work. I still have all those OEM drives intact. When I go to the BIOS setup, I have two boot sectors, one is the original windows boot, and the other is the new linux boot; but I'm not sure it is related or not.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my computer and had it up to date on all of the Windows updates. I also have Windows Vista installed on another drive on the computer.
I was using it earlier and it suddenly blue screened at random. I was just browsing Reddit or something when it happened.
Once it blue screened I couldn't get it to work again. The error code it gave me was 0x000000e for both my Windows 7 install and Vista install (both were working fine before this blue screen).
I got on my laptop and downloaded the system repair and put it on a disc. I ran it on my desktop (the computer having issues) and it repaired the boot issues. However, on the Windows 7 install I can get to the login screen and log in now, but it will spend about a minute or two sitting at the 'Preparing your desktop' message before coming up with a screen with nothing but a teal background and in the bottom right it says this:

Windows 7
Build 7600
This copy of Windows is not genuine

It is a legitimate copy and has worked fine for a year before this happened. The background looks like this minus the taskbar and icons: http://www.guidebookgallery.org/pics...win2000pro.png

The Vista install seems to work fine now though. However, I cannot access the drive that has Windows 7 installed on it from Vista anymore. If I try opening it, it will say 'Access Denied'.
Also, the drive letter for Windows 7 changed after running the repair. It was originally drive letter G but it has been changed to F.

I purchased my windows phones (Lumia 640 XL) from the ATT store in December. Actually I bought 3. At that time I was assured that all my normal apps would be available that the transition to windows phones would be seamless. Now our phones are glitchy, we are finding there are few apps we can use and none of the normal ones we normally used AND Yahoo mail, which I've used for 15 years is no longer available as an app on the windows app store. So now I can't even access my email from my phone easily? Really?? I was also told when I bought the phone that the new windows 10 mobile upgrade would be available to us soon. That was almost a year ago. I'm really becoming unhappy with my windows phones, the support and apps we were promised. The lack of the promised windows 10 update was misleading. I'm seriously tired of numb and corporate responses to my issues. I feel we were sold on phones that do not meet our needs and that we were taken advantage of because we were specifically told things, and made promises that Microsoft is not delivering. Seriously thinking of dumping all of our Microsoft products.

Hi! I have a quite a big problem. I recently reinstalled windows on my PC. 2 days after that got BlueScreen and Windows doesn't boot anymore. Thank goodness I was able to start computer in Safe Mode but I got BlueScreen once again in a few minutes. So while I was in Safe Mode I got some informations: Name of a problem is BlueScreen, Version of Os is 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48, Regional settings: 1060, BBCode: 4e, Signature of a Problem (SP) 2: 6.1.7600.16385, SP 3: Unknown, SP 4: 21200018, SP 5: AutoFailover, SP 6: 6, SP 7: 0x4e. Well after trying to start Windows it stopped at the point where it's saying Starting Windows and then computer restarted. Next time it said if I want to you Start up fix (or something similar) and I clicked to go to Start Up Fix. This thing wasn't able to do anything, except a system restore (which didn't help), but I got one usefull information here too. It was saying, Name of a problem: StartupRepairOffline.

So have you any idea what should I do? Would reinstalling Windows help or is problem somewhere else?

If I can I would like to do something else but reinstalling Windows isn't a big problem.

Answer:BlueScreen Error BCCode 4e, happened on new installed Windows

Just updated to the latest build. It makes it to the lock screen, and I can slide the picture up, but it won't let me put my PIN in. I can't click any icons in the bottom right corner, and when I do click, the picture is just above my cursor like I am sliding it up again.
Has this happened to anybody else, and does anyone know a fix or workaround?
