Viewing Folders in Details Mode - My Documents/Downloads

Question: Viewing Folders in Details Mode - My Documents/Downloads

I'm not sure how this happened, or just what the proper vocabulary really is, but here's my problem.

I very carefully direct and downloaded files to a subfolder (DownloadsTempMD) under My Documents on a Data drive.

I'd really very much prefer to be able to sort downloaded files by name, date, the usual Details format.

For some reason Windows 7 Professional x64 has elected to conclude that anything I download must be for my entertainment, ergo it must be sorted by Title, Contributing Artists, Album. This may be a great boon to some, but it is a PITA to me. If I've downloaded an installation file, I want the most recent file at the top of the display where I can find it.

Is there a way to turn off this 'feature' that reminds my way too much of 'Clippy.'

thanks

Preferred Solution: Viewing Folders in Details Mode - My Documents/Downloads

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Viewing Folders in Details Mode - My Documents/Downloads

Hello Baumgrenze,

If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to set a default folder view for all folders with the "General Items" folder template and "Details" view.

When viewing my 'Windows Explorer' folders, I want all my folders (except Pictures) to open with the 'Details' view. Currently they are opening with 'Icon' view.Apart from individually changing the settings of every single folder one by one, is there a quick way to achieve that? Thanks.

Answer:Viewing folders with 'Details' view

In each area, (my pic, my docs etc) go to View and select details. All the files in the area chosen will change.

I'd like to see more than the time and event name.

If I could possibly see the writing I put into the box, that would be great.

There's something about Windows that has always puzzled me. Let's say you have a directory in which there are some additional directories (folders) and some standalone files. When in that directory you select details for your viewing mode. Right click on a standalone file, select properties and you'll see the file size. Do the same for a folder and you'll see the folder size. This tells you that the information about the size of the file or folder is present. Yet when you select view details, the size of the standalone files is displayed but the size of the folders is not displayed.

The only reason I can imagine Microsoft does this is because they make a bunch of money when people like me get so annoyed with this that we buy software such as folder size (which I use). But I didn't pay one dime for the folder size software, as I got it free from a third party vendor. So the reason can't be because they make a bunch of money selling the folder size software.

Can anyone explain why Microsoft doesn't display the folder size?

Answer:Why is folder size not displayed when viewing in the details mode?

Because it would slow your system down. The sizes of individual folders aren't recorded anywhere on your hard drive; therefore, the size of each file in a folder must be added-up every time you want to know the size of that folder. This process can eat up a lot of resources if you're dealing with large folders. Someone at Microsoft probably just said "It's not worth the trouble!". It's not a conspiracy by the Illuminati.

Just so you know I am on W7 64.

For some reason if I go into a folder in my documents and tell it to view large icons when I go back all the folders are large icons. Normally I want everything to be a list but in a folder that has pics I prefer it to be large icons. Is there a way to make it so I can view the pictures as large icons but keep everything else as a list? If I go to like my music folder and view large icons it doesn't change my my documents folder.

Answer:Odd problem when viewing folders in my documents.

Folder Options -> View tab -> "Remember each folder's view settings"

maybe that's un-checked?
Placement could be wrong, as that's where it exists in XP, but I think it's in a similar place.

Hi tried to register at tenforums but "server issue" with captcha won't let me. Tried 3 times so no option but to come here.

Please bear with me as I'm not advanced with tech stuff generally but my questions should be easy to answer.

1) Recently updated to Win 10 from Win 7. Everything ok so far but it's changed or messed up my access to the Documents and Downloads folders. With Win 7 if I downloaded an image from say canstockphoto the file would appear in my Downloads folder on the list. I'd then select the file and the "Open" option would appear at the top and then the "Preview" option. Clicking that would open up Paint where I could resize the image, click ok then go back to the Downloads folder and rename it then upload it elsewhere. Now it's all unclear and the image files appear as images and not file names and I can't see how to carry out the above tasks (opening, getting into Paint, resizing renaming etc) Can someone refer me to or give me step by step instructions on how to carry out these what used to be simple steps.

2) I also can no longer see how to actually open files in the documents folder, say if I want to c&p it to somewhere else. Again it used to be clear and simple with Win 7 but there's now a bewildering array of stuff none of which simply says "open" so how do I do that?

Any help/advice gratefully appreciated.

Im getting multiple "Downloads" folders appearing, all pointing to the same directory (E:/Downloads)

When I change one of them, they all change. Also no Documents folder.

Cant delete the extra folders. In the Properties > Location -- When I click "Restore Default" the folder url changes to "C:/Users/username/Documents/"

Where did my Original downloads folder go, and why are they all linked together anyway?this is blowing my mind.

Once you have the settings made that you want to always use, go to Organize, Folders and Search options, and then the View tab. There you select and click the "Apply to All folders" button.
The next time you start up Windows Explorer the saved settings should be shown.

Ok, I need some help..

I know that the documents library is a "library" and when I save anything there it really saves the file to the default location(my documents).

I teach a basic PC course usage course to seniors and some of the PCs are now listing the "My Documents" and the "Public" folders above their respective files when they click on "documents". In the past all the files have been there but never a separation by folder in the listing. There are 8 computers in the LAb and 4 show the "my Documents" and Public location in the listing....

How can I get this back to where they only see the whole list of files without the folder separation in the listing...

Thanks for any help, this is confusing them...

Answer:Viewing the documents library displays my documents folder

Hello John, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like the default Arrange by, Sort by, or Group by folder view of the "Documents" library has been changed. You might see if doing what's in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial below to click on Clear changes in the "Arrange by" (on toolbar) drop down menu may help.

File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

Hi all,

I've built another new PC, but for the first time I've installed a SSD to hold Win7 while all my data (in theory) will be held on my data drive (2 TB Hard Disk).

I've redirected most of my user folders just fine, "My Documents", My Music, Downloads etc. however when I installed my first game on this system, it's placing its saved games into "Documents"; note: NOT "My Documents".

Of course all my google searches throw back results for redirecting "My Documents" which is already done...

So is the "Documents" folder stuck in my user folder permanantly? Over the course of a year I don't doubt it will get very bloated with saved games, screenshots etc. so I really don't want it on my SSD drive and want to nip this problem in the bud if possible.

Basically is this possible to "fix" without relocating the entire "Users" folder?
p.s. Out of interest, I tried creating a "Documents" folder on my F: drive (my data disk) and it said that it already existed as "MY Documents"...Annoying

Answer:Documents vs. My Documents - Relocating folders off c: to data drive

Navigate to the start menu, Right click on Documents and assign a new location, By doing so, If your external HDD fails you will lose all your data.

Hi, I would like to add a function onto my website so that I can request contact information eg name, email when somebody wants to download a document from my website
Basically, I would like their details and in exchange they will be able to read some of my documentation
Is this possible?
Thank you

Answer:How to request contact details when somebody downloads a document

You can run a registration system, so that anyone who wants to download a document must register first. It's simple enough to do - your web host probably offers a script that will do the job.
Bear in mind that lots of people are deterred by requests for personal information - they may simply click away from your site.

Ok how can I move the folders that games/programs create in My Documents and not have them reappear?

Some games/programs that do it are:
Age of Empires 3
Crysis_SP_DEMO
Unreal Tournament 3 Demo
Deus Ex - Invisible War Demo
In The Groove Demo
Visual Studio 2008 (dont really care about this one)
Maya 2008 (already fixed)

I already know about:
- Folder redirection through powertoys Tweak UI, but I dont want to redirect My Documents, just these folders.
- Folder redirection through the Group Policy Editor sounds like the same thing too, can only redirect 4 or 5 special folders.
- Junctions, but I dont just want to move where the files are stored, I want the folders to be gone from My Documents.
- Setting the folders to hidden, but I dont want to do that because I like having windows set to show hidden files (although if there was a way to make a button on the explorer toolbar to show/hide hidden files that would be awesome).

I found out how to move the folder for Maya already, in control panel you have to go into System, then Advanced tab, then Environment Variables, then make a new system variable with the name MAYA_APP_DIR then make the value be where you want the folder to be.

Is there a way to use Environment Variables to enter one path and make it redirect to another path, so when programs try to create stuff there it will end up in a different location? Like have C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Games redirect to C:\Program Files\Games\Settings (and have ... Read more

Answer:Redirect folders? aka move folders that games create in My Documents

It might be a game-specific thing that you have to dig through the registry to find for each game... just a guess though

Hello. New to the forum and have a problem that up until a while ago was not one.

I am using a Toshiba Satellite L300D-02Q / Model # PSLC8C-02Q019 / OS WINDOWS VISTA HP SP1 [I believe.]

Looking for the solution to the following recent problem with viewing downloads off of my laptop to my HDTV using a VGA (15 pin male to male) connection.

Up until recently I have been able to view downloads / streams without any problems. I would download a movie or program, connect my laptop to my HDTV and watch.

Recently two things began to happen:

The first noticeable thing was that the laptop screen, that use to go black when connected to the HDTV [the picture appearing on my HDTV] stayed on. [This not really being a problem as I would just lower the lid of my laptop]

but then after a period of time I would loose the picture on the HDTV, loose control over my mouse and then receive a “blue” screen with the following message:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop Error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

So i had to put it in an external enclosure with my other "windows xp" PC . Doing that I can access folders like "programs" and "windows" and "guest documents" however what i cannot do is try to go inside the owner/admistrator folder because i get the message "access denied- this folder is unaccessible". When i go to "properities" it says it has 0 bytes however when i click on the "hard drive icon" itself it says it does have almost all the 120 GB (and over 48% free space) i have saved on the administrators account. I already tried running it on safe mode but it just restarts over and over and doesn't go through.

So please tell me how can I possibly recover files (only want to recover very important documents only) where windows is installed and I am not getting premission to check the "owner/adminstrators" folder and documents.

Answer:Can't access owner folders/documents but other folders in master HD! Please help!

An idea or 2

You could download and burn a Live Linux distribution (boots and runs from cd/dvd) this might be able to get around those pesky problems.

I would recommend Knoppix or Mandriva (DL and burn ISO) then make sure your pc checks the cd/dvd first (can be adjusted in your BIOS) then boot and you will have access to the files. (Unless they are completely borked-from shock)

OR
If you are not comfortable with that...
You can use a program offered here at MG's called Recuva

http://majorgeeks.com/Recuva_d5514.htm

(Note the above program can take hours to complete depending upon system specs-grab a cold one and kick back)

I have used it several times and have had very good results-

I have had vista for almost a year now and I use my scanner to scan lots of documents that I have printed out previously. I have never had any problems viewing them in what I thought was a simple viewer program, nothing fancy or photo oriented. Today all of a sudden all of my documents are opening with windows photo gallery. This program prints and views those documents in a complex way not letting me simplify it. It uses too much ink and doesn't let me get to my printing prefereces attached to my printer. I want the simple way back but unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember what it was called? It is just one of those things that opened automatically and I never changed or had any reason to pay too much detailed attention to it. I hope someone can direct me to the right place so I can find this or figure out what is going on. If you are running vista I would love to know what you open documents with!

Are you thinking of the Microsoft Digital Image Standard 2006 Editor, or maybe just the simpler MS Paint program? For either one, just right click on the file name, select Open With (not just plain Open) and scroll down to and select Choose Default Program. If the program you want is not in the list of Recommended Programs, click on either Browse and find a program on your computer, or the blue link that will help you find a program on the internet. Once you're chosen the program you always want to use to open JPEGS, make sure you check the checkbox just above that blue link.FYI, if Paint is the program you're thinking of, it's most likely here on your computer: C:\Windows\System32\mspaint.exe.If the other one (or a similar version) is also on your computer, it's probably here: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Digital Image 2006\pi.exeHope this helps!

As of Windows 7, the "Documents", "Pictures", "Music" and "Videos" folders appear displayed in Windows Explorer with a "My" prefix but are actually still stored in the file system without the prefix (as in Windows Vista).

So you don't have to do anything, no extra file is being duplicated, no space is wasted.

Hope that clarifies the situation!

If I use Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\Users\[username]\Documents, then everything shows up fine. But when I open the Documents folder under Libraries, I'm getting a list of every file in my Documents regardless of which subfolder they're in. The subfolders don't show up at all. I've never seen anything like this in Windows before. I don't remember changing anything about this, and I can't find any options to change it back.

Is there any free programmes, like star office for viewing microsoft publisher docs. I have been given ssome docs but I dont seem to have Publisher in my office suite.

Answer:Publisher documents,any free viewing progs

As far as I'm aware, there are NO free software packages that can open .pub files, the only way you will be able to open them, apart from getting Microsoft Publisher, is to ask the author of the files to save them in a different format.Sorry.

Hi. I have a huge music collection (20+ gigs) and I like to keep it super organized. What I want to know is if it is possible to make all the folders in my collection have the same "details." Right now, i have to go into each individual folder and go View > Choose Details and then choose each ones I want in that specific folder. All of the folders are going to have the same details so is there a way to change them all in one swoop?

Thanks,

Answer:Music Mp3's Folders Details

Since you haven't specified the operating system I'm assuming it's Windows XP. I have attached two images. In XP, right click the root directory (ie MY MUSIC) for your music directory then click properties. Then click the Customise tab on the top. Under the first section 'What kind of folder do you want?' Select Music (best for audio files and playlist). (see image1.jpg) Then check the Also apply this template to all subfolders. (see image2.jpg) This will do the same setting to all for the folders within the root directory of the music folder. Then it will do your mass change for you.

Hope this helps.

I set the columns and their widths in "details" view for almost all folders in a certain way in WinExplorer.

Sometimes (I guess when the dir contains e.g. videos *.avi) additional columns where automatically shown, the column order and width differs.

I don't want in any case to see a "type" and "length" columns.

How can I set a details view really for all folders on my hard disc even when it contains *.avi videos or other multimedia stuff?

Peter

Answer:How to set details view in WinExp for really all folders?

Well the same way as always (XP has always had this problem too). But it's only a partial fix.

Go to the root of each drive. Set the view as you want it Then on the "Organize"->"Folder and search options"->"View" tab, click "Apply to all folders".

The only problem is when new folders are created they are created in "automatic" mode and the problem can slowly creep up again.

The only way to get it to stick permanently is to use something else like Explorer++

In order to customize which fields are displayed in the details pane for a given file type you can:

1. Run Regedit.
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAsso ciations\.mp3 (Or whatever file type you want to edit.)
3. Edit the PreviewDetails string.

My question is:
Is there a way to do something similar for folders? Currently, the only info displayed in the details pane when a folder is selected is Date modified, and Availability. I would like to add other details to this pane (Size, Date created etc...). Is this possible?

Am I being really stupid or is there no way of changing the details displayed and the column widths for a folder AND all of the subfolders it contains.

I know how to customize a folder and its subfolders using the right click properties / customize tab but this doesn't allow for the selection of the details displayed.

I now have a reasonable MP3 folder containing 150+ folders with further subfolders within them, e.g. Music folder then artist folder then albums of said artist folder. I would really like to be able to view the files in details mode and would like to be able to open each folder and have the same details displayed in all of them. What I don't want to do is to have to open each folder and change the details displayed and change the column widths.

Help Me!

Answer:Changing details displayed in folders and subfolders

I don't think there is way to do it but to open each sub folder and set it up.

There is a button under Tools>folder options>View that lets you set ALL folders to the current folders settings. But there is no button that I know of which will make it do it for only the sub folders.

I have a question regarding mp3 music files in folders. I keep these files (all album folders) in music folder on desktop. When I click any subfolder of these albums, I'd like to view them by track number, file (song name), artist and album name. (as shown in the screenshot below).
The problem is Windows 8.1 default gives me certain details such as type, size, date created. I know that I can select and unselect the little boxes after I right click the column header.

Is it possible to change the default for these details?

Thanks.

Hello!

I'd prefer to have details for all folders.
It looks like I found a solution for the annoying auto changing of folder types:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;This registry script has been made by Vishal Gupta - AskVG.com

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]
"FolderType"="NotSpecified"

But I also want the view to stay details even if I change it in explorer's view menu to look at something. In this case currently the setting is immediately saved somewhere and next time I get that view. I want it to show details the next time I visit it...

(I have also disabled thumbs.db and desktop.ini via registry settings.)

Answer:Default to details view for all folders, even after change

Hello Avada,

If you like, you can use the method in the tutorial below to set a default folder view of "Details" with a "General Items" template. The folder view will be applied to all folders and remembered. If you make any changes to the folder view of a folder afterwards, then that change will still be remembered for that folder.

Folder View - Set a Default for all Folders in Windows 8

Hope this helps,

A somewhat trivial question, but I thought I would ask: When I change the View option in my folders to Details, most of them stay that way, but a few always change to List or Small Icons on their own. Is there some option I should be selecting in the Control Panel to default to Details view on everything?

Answer:Keeping window folders in Details view

After making the desired changes to Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options and then the View tab. Select the "Apply to all folders" button.

Is there a way to make files and folders mingle together when using details view in Windows XP?

The way it works now, the folders are always grouped separately from the normal files. I typically sort by filename and I'd like the folders to be mixed in with the files, sorted by name just as if they were regular files themselves.

I know this isn't an error condition, but it is an annoyance. Please post a reply if you know a fix or workaround for this. Thanks!

Answer:mix files and folders in explorer (details view)

View, Arrange Icons By, Show in Groups.
Not perfect though, because of the letter headers, takes longer to scroll.

Ok.. got a question for the experts.A friend of mine went out and bought an external HD.They want to move their "my documents" stuff to the new HD.I managed to use the "properties" of my documents to relocate the files to the new HD, but they are no longer private. meaning the other users of the computer now have access to those files..Not only that, the "temporary internet files" and user setting files, and such, are still on the C drive..How do we change the location of those files, and make the "my documents" stuff, private again, so that other users cannot access another persons documents? Thanks.

Is there any way to get the same functionality for RAR files that we have for ZIP files in Windows? Being able to open them like folders and easily copy & paste. Now I use 7-Zip's context menu but it would be more convenient if they could be opened in Explorer.

I know this is possible in 3rd party file managers like Directory Opus but those are not yet compatible with Win7.

Answer:Viewing RAR files as folders?

WinMount allows you to right click on the .rar .7z .iso etc and mount it on a virtual drive or local folder and use the files directly without extraction.

The great irony of compression is that once extracted the files and the .zip will take up twice the storage.

How do I make one folder default to one particular view, but not have that apply to all folders? In my old computer, I could change the 'my pictures' folder to always be thumbnails. Just set up an OEM version on Windows 10 Home on a new laptop. After getting it set up, I moved the Music, Pictures, and Videos folders under This PC to a secondary drive. (I did this by right clicking on the folder, going to Location, and selecting a folder on the secondary drive.) This all seems to work fine.

I must have done something horribly wrong when I tried to do the same thing with Downloads and Documents, however. Somehow, under This PC, I now had 2 links called Documents. One has the download arrow icon and the other has a document icon, but both were labeled "Documents" and both pointed to the Documents folder. There was no link to the Downloads folder.

I was able to use the procedure above to change one of them to point to Downloads, but after a reboot, now they both say Downloads, and I have no Documents link under This PC.

It seems like they are logically linked to have the same name and point to the same location, even though they have different icons. I'm at a loss on how to proceed.

Can anyone help me logically disconnect these two things, so I can actually have separate links to Downloads and Documents again?

Thanks!

This evening I was working on a project that is due tomorrow and I noticed some weird icons at the bottom of my computer, but decided to ignore them and printo out all my work and call it a night. I opened My Libraries and noticed that all of my folders under My Documents are missing, including their subfolders and documents. Everything is gone!! I then clicked on one of those icons to see what it was and it was WindowsRepair. I promptly googled "WindowsRepair" to find out what it was and realized it was a virus so I began looking up ways to rid my computer of it. I opened my computer in Safe Mode with Networking, hoping that the files had returned they hadn't. I then restored my system to 4 days ago, once again hoping the filed had returned, they hadn't. I can only find a few of them when I search for them. I can find most of the subfolders in recent places, but they are all empty. I want to verify that I am running Windows 7.I am desperate at this point as this project is due in less than 9 hours and I can't find a single file that I need. I have been having a time today trying to recover from a mistake I made. I got a new SSD drive and cloned my C: drive to it and then wanted to move my Download and Documents folders to the Old C: drive which is now the D: drive. The mistake I made was to put both locations to D:\ thinking that it would add Documents and Download directories automatically. Anyway, I used other things within the forum but have now ended up with the above situation. The icon for Documents is the Download icon and the icon for the Download folder is the Documents icon. If I click on Documents, it does indeed take me to Documents, same for Download. The Icons on the folders is the issue.

Win 7 was easy to make all your folders show details view and not what windows thought you should view it as.

I can't find a way to do that in Win 8. I have googled it many times and all attempts have failed. I have changed several folders to details view only to have them revert back to what windows wants me to view them as.

Files and folders are mixing together but only on one drive or possibly in one folder. This drive in all places except two has a folder containing only folders or a folder containing only files. The exceptions are a folder called PVRRECORD and the root of the drive, which contains:

autorun
Recycled
System Volume Information
autorun.inf
NET.JPG
PVRRECORD
recorded.txtClick to expand...

Then I move into PVRRECORD and things start messing up. Clicking on Name to arrange by name gives me mixed files and folders, usually (but not always?) with files of matching name to a folder coming after the folder. A file that you would expect to be mixed in amongst the folders may be at the end of the folders like a well-behaved file should be. Later it will end up mixed in with the folders like all the other files.

I found that clicking on alternate headings can cause the files and folders to separate and then clicking on Name again will give me the correct sorting order. However, I have to try Size, then Type, then Date Modified. Sometimes I only need to click on one other heading or maybe two but equally often I have to run through the whole lot before things go back to normal. Things don't necessarily arrange in a logical order, as you go through this process, until the last sort.

I'm using Details view but the problem still occurs in List view.

I can find plenty of hits in Google for people wanting to get this to happen and using "Arrang... Read more

I work extensively with the downloads folder. I download files for work, do what needs to be done, upload what needs to be uploaded and trash the rest. The files are typically downloaded from BOX as a .zip and unzipped to work from. Just this week, my computer has decided anything I download will suddenly be read only. I have to force .docx files to open in edit mode and when I try to save files, I often see this message:

The document could not be saved. The file may be read-only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder.

When this happens, I'm trying to resave the same file, and overwrite the original version. However, I can navigate out of the unzipped folder and into the main Downloads folder and it will typically save. But that's completely inefficient and should not be happening. I've changed nothing in processes in the last few days. The only thing I have done is install a printer, but it might have been doing it before the printer was installed; I don't recall, plus would a printer really have any chance of causing that issue?

Any ideas? I've added Take Ownership at the folder and file level, used it multiple times, and also deselected read-only at the folder level multiple times. The files that are throwing the error do not say they are read-only in the properties. I'm completely thrown for a loop and trying to avoid rolling my system back.

Answer:Documents in downloads folder are suddenly read only

Hi Leah, welcome to the TSG Forums.....

From the manner in which you write I assume that you know your way around computers, so here are a few suggestions....

1. Uninstall the printer, Restart and see if that makes any difference. Drivers can sometimes do weird things.

2. Create a new Folder called something like Leah_Downloads and download to that Folder and see if the problem remains.

3. Login as the Administrator and run sfc /scannow as the Administrator from within a CMD window. This is just in case some System File has gone AWOL.

T.

It was fine until recently (no idea, unless there was an update this week?), but look at this? It looks crap. It no longer appears as just one straight word, but goes into two lines. Like it is too big just for one word. Any way of correcting this?

Answer:Documents Folder/Downloads/Favorites - Two Lines??

No clue as to why it's suddenly done that?

I’m running Windows 7 Home Premium on the three machines I have at home. All three are connected to the same network. I would like to share files between two of the machines so I created a homegroup and added only these two machines. For the folders I would like to share between the two, I changed the folder’s sharing permission from “Everyone’ to ‘Homegroup’.

What I have noticed is the third machine that is not part of this homegroup (it is owned by a student who is temporarily renting a room in our house) is still able to view the other machines from within windows explorer and even double click on them to get a listing of folders that are being shared. Granted, when they try to open any of these folders, they get a message saying they do not have the required permission.

Ideally, I would like to have the homegroup machines only visible in explorer to users who are part of the homegroup. Likewise, any user not in the homegroup would not be able to see the other machines in explorer. Is this setup possible?

Answer:Preventing others on network from viewing my shared folders

It sounds to me like you do not want this student to be a part of your regular network at all.

Some routers "like mine" have a guest zone for a wireless connection that is outside your normal network. That would prevent them from seeing those folders. The set up and options for routers is different so it's difficult to give exact directions for this.

For a wired connection you may be able to set up a static IP address outside the normal range of your regular network for them to connect too.

Whenever I view a folder which contains video files, and then I right/left click on any of the video files (usually divx 100mb+ files), an error message pops up and I have to restart explorer.exe. I have WinXP SP2, and this is really starting to annoy me. Does anyone know how I would start about fixing this problem?

Answer:Problem viewing folders with video files

it's prbably trying to preview them. turn the folder view mode to list or something.

Running Window XP Home Media Edition

When I open certain file folders on my hard drive, Windows Explorer will give me a message telling me "it has encountered and error and needs to shut down". I have two external hard drives on which I capture and backup video files. Most of the file folders on the drives can be accessed by Windows Explorer with no problem but certain folders shut down immediately upon opening. My hard drives mirror each other (manually, not in a RAID 1 config.) and the problem folder shuts down Windows explorer on both drives.

I tried changing the column view applicable to all folders, such tha only the file name comes up in the Explorer window and that actually helped. Explorer will stay open and I can access many of the video files. However, eventually I'll get a notification and Explorer shuts down.

I searched this forum and based on my findings I ran Malwarebytes and Avast and found nothing. Based on my very limited use of the Internet and lack of any other computing problems I didn't expect to find a virus or spyware. I also ran cleanmgr and cleaned up everything I could including Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin.

Any idea why Windows Explorer is having trouble simply listing the files within certain file folders and not others?

Answer:Windows XP Shuts Down When Viewing Certain file Folders

My guess would be possible bad sectors on the hard drive...the alternative would be to guess some sort of file corruption.I would try running the chkdsk /r command on each of the drives with this situation.Start/Run...type chkdsk /r X: (where X: represents the respective partition/drive) and hit Enter. Spacing must be exactly as shown.Alternative method of running same command: In Explorer or My Computer, right click on the drive, select Properties, select the tools tab, and click on the Check Now button. Check both of the available options and click Start button.Louis

No backups, no system restore, nothing of the sort. No data to worry about either. But the folders were being annoying confusing themselves for each other, my downloads shortcuts were renamed to documents and pointed to the documents directory but the icon still looked like the downloads icon. Read that carefully, windows has gone nuts. So I deleted the two folders in attempts to fix this problem but it's still happening.

Update:

Now this is whats happening, really getting ticked at the annoyance that is Windows 10.

Answer:Default Deleted documents and downloads folder now they keep confusing

What third party software are you running in the background or using for what some market as a "System tuner" type software?

With Windows 8, if I copy files or folders from one disk to another, a window appears which shows the progress. This is very useful.

Windows 10 does not show this window. Is there a way to make it appear?

It seems to be a glitch in Build 11082, (if that's the Build you're running), no hint of a fix yet!

With one or two folders in XP which contain my videos, if preview is switched on (from the 'View' pull down menu in any window containing media), explorer tells me it has encountered an error, and needs to close... the details are usually similar to this...

"error signature:
appname: explorer.exe
appver 6.02900.2180
Modname:xvid.ax ModverL 0.0.0.0 Offser: 0003dd11"

I'm not 100% sure if this is related entirely to just xvid codec videos (I was certain it happened with mp3s at one point, not 100% on that now though). I am wondering if there is an easy fix? Could I have a corrupted xvid video codec or xp media preview driver? I am unsure how to uininstall/reinstall xvid codecs... I know that if I switch media preview off, the problem is gone, but it is very awkward not being able to use it for info on my mp3s and vids etc.

Incase anyone would like to know how to switch image and/or media preview
on or off, I used this method:

1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

I really dont want to install xp from scratch again, and am certain that it is not a virus as I have scanned my entire system.
Cheers and merry xmas if anyone can help! hehe :D

Answer:Windows Explorer error when viewing some video folders

Download this freeware
ftpedia.com/progDownload/Storm-Codec--Final-Download-20053.html

It's stormcodec, it replaces all codecs for XP with the most recent version, and install's media player classic on your pc. (you can uninstall the mediaplayer seperately later if you dont want it)

Storm should replace all your codecs except flash

Hi folks. Im new to the site and not very good with searching threads to see if this has been talked about yet, if so I apologize.

My problem began when I was looking for a hidden folder called AppData, to look for a file to do some modding for a game I play called Empire Total War. I am currently using vista home premium 32bit. I wish I could explain exactly what I did but i vaguely remember right clicking in users and either checking or unchecking hidden then apply and then to all sub folders etc... it went through its folders and took about 4 mins then next thing i know my desktop is practically empty. My firefox wont work, etc.
I tried to do a system restore to a earlier date and that didnt change anything. I found how to show hidden files etc and clicked that so now i can see transparent icons.

I have tried scanning the net looking for a way to reverse whatever I have done so that my pc can go back to normal but cant find anything to bring me back, only how to hide/unhide files. Can anyone please please help me out. I have tried using CMD and then attrib blahblah but it doesnt do anything.

Again im sorry if this is a repost of a earlier thread but i suck at searching threads and reallllllly need some help.

Thanks for your understanding and any help!!!!!

Answer:tried viewing hidden folders and now desktop icons etc are missing

I am setting up a ubuntu server on an old box.
I need to clear my login credentials frequently to log into the same share with a different username/password.
After I have opened a network share i'll open a console and use the net view command to clear out my session.
When I open up the network view and attempt to re-open the previous network share, windows 7 will blue screen and reboot before I can see what it says. The error states something about hardware.
I have looked for the memory.dmp file but I don't think it is being written.

This sounds like a unique or new problem. Does anybody have an idea of what is going on?

Answer:blue screen crash when viewing network folders

Have you checked for updated drivers for your network hardware?
