what started as DWM.exe not working, now I can't boot anymore.

Question: what started as DWM.exe not working, now I can't boot anymore.

This is my first post here, and I came here to ask advice on a big problem, so bad I'm posting this from Knoppix Linux because windows gets stuck in an infinite boot loop. Let me tell you the history of my windows disintegrating: a few months ago, my windows was still logging in but DWM.exe stopped working. This was fine because explorer.exe started up a minute later one week ago, after logging in, I got a black screen with only my cursor. I couldn't do anything, exept unistalling my video driver and unistalling avast anti-virus, because that was causing troubles. I could only do this in safe mode. Surpisingly I was able to reboot and after waiting a little longer, I could work normally. Until yesterday, when windows was functioning normally, I got messages that some files became unreadable and corrupt. I immediatly shut down my pc and started startup repair, I tried system restore en system repair multiple times, but neither of them worked and when I rebooted, My system got stuck in an infinite boot loop. Today, I can still acces all the files on my hard drives, but when I try to check and repair the filesystem, Knoppix found some bad sectors in my hard drive. Now I am hopelessly looking for answers and I thought asking some help on this forum. http://www.sevenforums.com/images/smilies/sad.gif Kind regards, Durneztj

Preferred Solution: what started as DWM.exe not working, now I can't boot anymore.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

my notebook shows a blue power light, a yellow battery light and a blue start button but nothing happens if you press it!
Maybe the reason is that I didn't connect it to the socket in time!
At the moment I'm doing an internship abroad and I'd like to skype home, so I would be very glad if anybody here can help me soon!
What might be the problem? Can I start the computer or the BIOS by other means?

Thanks

Hi,

which socket do you mean? Maybe the "docking station"?
Did you tried to connect a external monitor to your machine to check if maybe your lcd screen is defective?

I have an Epson Stylus DX4000, (computer is windows XP) had for a while and use to work... then only connected once in a while and now not connecting to the computer so can not print/scan (although photocopying working, printer seems normal no flashing lights... no errors reported only 'epson scan can not print when try to start scanning).

Seems when plug (via USB) to computer not recognised (does not appear in Device managers, usb controllers... and checked cable... tried dif usb plugs... other items such as ipod work so not computer).

Tried reinstalling, turning on and off... checked all usb ports... looked to reset... obviously unable to print test page.

From research think maybe the IEEE 1394 support has a problem recognising (though no error showing in device manager)...

As you can see tried lots of things with no success, please help.
Thanks for any help.

I wanted to set up Ubuntu on my computer, and followed the instructions in the first answer to this thread: dual boot - How to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7/8 - Ask Ubuntu

As instructed, I created a logical partition using EaseUS software. I did this on my H:/ drive, a hard disk drive (whereas Windows 7 was installed on C:, and SSD).

After a mandatory reboot for the new partition changes, I did not immediately go to install Ubuntu, although I had Live USB to do so. Instead, if I remember properly, I booted into Windows to make sure everything was OK, but only to find out that some "Windows could not boot properly", giving me the option to 'Launch Startup Repair' - which I did, but to no avail. All it did was reported that some 2 system files were missing or corrupt.

I then installed Ubuntu on a third drive because I still needed it to perform some benchmarking. I did this using the 'install alongside windows 7' option.
But now that I don't need Ubuntu anymore, all I am interested in is getting back to Windows, while keeping all the files and programs intact.

How should I go about fixing this? Delete the logical partition on the other drive? I also have that Windows installation CD, and I'm thinking its repair options could be useful - but not having a whole lot of self-confidence, I don't know what steps exactly to take to preserve my files.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,
yesterday I wanted to install Windows 10 Enterprise on my T1650 test machine. Before doing so, I successfully updated the BIOS to A20. After updating BIOS, I've enabled UEFI + Secure Mode, saved the changes and... couldn't start the PC anymore. When turning the PC on, monitor immediately goes into power saving mode, there is obviously no signal coming from the PC. Removed the Nvidia Quadro NVS 300 and plugged the monitor into board's VGA slot, no success. Tried to clear the CMOS (battery out, jumpers), nothing helped.
Any ideas?

Hello,

I am studying for my A+ certification and I wanted to try to install Recovery Console on my PC. I set the CMOS boot order to first boot from the CD ROM drive. I put my XP Professional installation CD in and restarted the computer. Once the XP setup program started running it looked like it was copying files, which scared me because I thought it would ask me before it did anything. So then eventually it got to a menu screen and I decided to press F3 and quit the setup, without installing Recovery Console. I went back into CMOS and reset the boot order to boot from the hard disk drive again, then saved and exited. However now it won't let me boot into Windows anymore, but rather prompts me to insert a bootable floppy or CD-ROM, which is obviously not what I want. I think I may have erased or copied over Boot.ini, and possibly other files. I want to go back to my previous settings before any of this occurred, and I need to keep all of my previous data, settings, programs, etc... in other words I don't want anything erased or changed at all. I'm hoping somebody can provide me step-by-step instructions on how to do this. I would greatly appreciate any help. I am using Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3. I built the PC myself, it is not a store bought PC.

Hi,  A bit over two years ago I bought an Acer ES1-111-C3CP and found that the Touch Pad problem that a lot of user's were complaining about was not working on my model. The comp was bought for my Wife who is bedridden, she uses it from 16 hours a day upto 24 hours a day ( her sleep pattern is erratic to say the least). I bought a wireless mouse for her to replace the Non working Touchpad and for the last two years she has been using it. Four day's ago the mouse died, she started using the Touchpad and since then it has worked perfectly, 100% better than when first bought. My question is, has there been a driver update that fixed the problem, has anybody else found that their Touchpad is better than when first bought? cheers, Eddie.

Platform:  Windows 7 64 bit, SP 1
When I first boot my laptop and launch IE, sometimes I will get a message that IE "stopped working". Note that I have my home page set to "about:blank". But when the 'stopped working' problem occurs, I notice that the page IE is trying to get to is
      res://ieframe.dll/acr_depnx_error.htm#,about:blank

rather than just plain "about:blank".  And when IE is working properly, when first launched, the home page that shows up in the address bar is "about:blank" and not the other weird URL.

Note that I have scanned my machine with Avast, Malwarebytes, Stinger, TDSSKiller, Windows Software Malicious Tool, GMER, and SUPERAntiSpyware -- nothing was found.

Any idea what is gong on?

Last night it just went wrong all of a sudden: the MSN was not working, and IE explorer was slow to the point of almost freezing when you start a new window. After restart, several things that should pop up in startup on the task bar did not appear: such as MSN, Skype, Norton online protection firewall, and strangely, my printer software. MSN cannot be started, IE slow when started but runs fine after a long long while, then the freezes again when a new IE window is started. I've ran Norton antivirus and MacAfee but no virus was found. I downloaded hijackthis and this is the log:

Hi there,

Another challenge for the experts ! Without going into too much detail, by moving hard disks around etc. I managed to screw up my 8.1 boot settings.
Partition-wise I should be ok as the 350mb "system" partition is still there, containing all necessary files.
System will however go straight for automatic repair and tell me it was not able to repair the problem.
bootrec /scanos returns 0. Bcd file seems fine when I take it through bcdedit. Renaming the bcd file and trying to rebuild one doesn't work either as it says there's no installation found.

I did not touch any partitions nor files btw, everything is still there and in tact as far as I know.

Thx in advance !

Answer:8.1 boot settings screwed, cannot boot anymore

Ow and bcdboot, bootrec /fixmbr /fixboot /rebuildbcd, etc don't do or solve anything

After opening the program, I dont think it is doing anything. No logs are created.

Please let me know how to go about the first step
Btw, the symptoms of my machine are -

1) Random new browser windows opening with hoax antivirus pop-ups asking for download
2) Firefox crashing everytime it is launched. Crash report submittal is failing.

3)Unable to connect to Internet through wired LAN. It shows connected status but no sites open.

4) Sometimes my McAfee Antivirus is closing down abrutly throwing warning that it has been closed although the system guard icon of McAfee is still active.

Thanks!

Oddest thing just happened... Still hate the laptop, but it started working again!  I have an Edge 15, a month or two ago it quit working, no lights, no power, just completely dead... I had tried pulling the battery, different AC adapters, everything and after two days I considered it a loss... Today I was looking at it because I was going to post it online for parts, for the grins of it I decided to plug it in --- The green AC adapter light lit up! ... I then booted the machine.     I would be curious to know if others that have had this total failure might see their machines suddenly work after they sit around for a couple months?   I have never seen anything like this... I figure that it will fail again in short order, but just wanted to post what I found very strange.

not sure what i did, perhaps i broke something, but my system is now behaving oddly when it boot into windows, when it loads windows. up until recently windows loaded very fast, bam, right to the metro start menu. now when it loads metro flashes for about a second, then my desktop flashes for about three seconds (without displaying any of the desktop icons), then the metro page appears again and, after about five seconds it's as if the metro page refreshes, it flashes on and off again, very quickly. my system still loads very quickly, but i have to now wait for it to go through it's little light show.

i though that perhaps a service with a delayed start might be causing the problem but they all look good and are set to w8 default - sfc /scannow reports that everything is aok as well. i've used ccleaner a few times to clean up some registry strays (i know some warn against it, but it has never caused me any problems in the past), but my system was fine after using, so i'm not sure this is the problem albeit maybe it made some changes when i ran it later, which is causing the problem. anyone else experience anything like this? any thoughts?

I'm trying to help my daughter get her laptop back up and running. (Created this account for her in case she needs to do additional follow up after she heads back to school on Sunday.)

She had the Think Point virus. I was able to get her computer to boot using her Windows XP install CD. Used my PC to download and transfer RogueKill and MBAM to her PC. Got as far as running RogueKill (which seemed to shut down Thinkpoint). Tried to check for updates for MBAM but kept getting an error message saying it couldn't access the internet. I was able to open IE and access the internet though. McAfee did catch and quarantine at least 2 trojans while I was searching the forum to see why I might be getting that error message when trying to do the MBAM update. Got some other pop-up that I'm sure was more Malware. Then the computer locked up. Tried to re-boot, but now I'm just getting a black screen. I'm no longer able to boot from the install CD either. I can get in to the set up menu (using F2).

Obviously can't run MBAM or HJT at this point. Any advice on how to get the computer to boot.... and then what to do next/first so we can start to fix this thing?

I'm tempted to just re-install Windows XP, but would want to be able to back up my daughter's files first (luckily she said she does have most, if not all, of her school papers on her flash drive --- but she had not backed up her photos or music).

I had just started getting popup that battery life is ending on Dell Inspiron 1545. Also got popup for update for Superspyware.. Which Dell recently installed when my password got disabled. Now I can't boot up at all. Please help! Thanks!

Answer:Lap top started shutting down now won't Boot up at all.

Your problem sounds like the laptop is not getting power.

either:
1. The AC adapter is unplugged from the wall or the laptop
2.  The AC adapter is dead
3. The DC In jack on the laptop is bad

When You Plug in the DELL AC Adapter does the green light on it light?
When You plug and unplug the AC Adapter from the laptop does the light that show it is getting power go on and off?

For reference the service manual is here
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-1545_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

If the laptop is not getting power to run and charge the battery, The symptom is that when you turn it on it keeps turning off and as the battery becomes more discharged (Run Down due to not charging) it stays on less time each time.
Does this describe Your Problem?

If that is not the problem, Does the laptop stay on and just not boot? That would be a different problem.

Good Luck
Roger

Good morning all!
Having spent the last 16 hours trying to diagnose and fix the issue I'm having, I'm now at a loss. It started last night when I was playing World of Warcraft, my PC would suddenly start freezing. In the space of probably an hour, my computer went from being fine to crashing every minute for a few minutes until I got the BSoD. Couldn't tell you what error code was, as it happened all too quickly. Tried rebooting my PC in safe mode, normal mode, didn't work. One can assume it was the same error code as the one before. Now here is where I'm stuck...
I have a recovery disc, won't load, just a blank screen. Start up repair won't work, just a blank screen with my cursor in the middle. I've tried unplugging all devices to see if one is causing the issue, but still the same problem. Have tried a different HDD, but no luck, just hangs on boot. Have cleared the CMOS and reset BIOS settings back to default. I've tried different cables into different sockets on the motherboard, I've tried using onboard graphics instead of my own graphics card. I've even tried using an RGB instead of my HDMI cable. I've done a memory diagnostic test, all seems fine. Is there anything else I haven't tried that I could try? Any help offered is massively appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Answer:PC started crashing, now won't boot.

Try booting with HDD disconnected, you should get an error message.
Try booting from Ubuntu Live DVD/USB
(Try it, not Full install). It should run with HDD still disconnected.
Do you get any unusual beeps or Caps Lock Flashing?

I'm running Windows XP Professional. Somehow, it seems in the past three days my "Alt-Tab" functionality has went down the toilet. To get it to work, I have to push Control and the Start button beforehand, and it's rare that it even works then. I've been running this build for four months. There have been on software changes in the past month excluding the installation of the new Trillian 3.1 over Trillian 3.0 about three days ago. I checked through its settings and can't see why it would cause the problem. I also checked all of the processes in Task Manager and they all check out as safe and required according to Google websites. Please, if you have any idea, I'm addicted to ALT-TAB as I use it all of the time on Linux, and without it I'm lost. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I am at loss and looking for some serious help.

Just recently my old PSU broke down and I bought new one. After installing it, my LAN stopped working and dissapeared from "device manager" (doesn't appear anymore even after reinstalling win 10 and trying win 7 as well).

Since it doesn't detect my network card or adapter (whatever it's called), I can't even install any drivers, that leads me to not being able use ethernet on computer.

Ask me any questions what concerns You. I'll do my best to answer them as soon as possible and as much as I can.

My parts are :
Motherboard - MSI 970 gaming;
GPU - MSI Geforce GTX 1050 2GB
RAM - some kinda old rams 3 x 2 GB
PSU - Corsair VS 650

Currently I have installed windows 7 professional N.

Win7 X64 Home Premium - up until about 3 or 4 days ago, my 'Tab' key worked fine on my USB keyboard. For example- when I log in to my email, I'd type my account name, hit 'Tab', and type in the password. Now when I hit 'Tab', the cursor does not jump down to the next box, the cursor simply goes away and the open Firefox window is 'deactivated' and I have to click in the password box to type it in.... weird. I tried a different USB keyboard, and I even powered down and tried a PS2 keyboard, the same thing happens with those so I know it isn't a keyboard issue, it's a Windows issue. Somehow the programming for the 'Tab' key has gone out of whack. The only thing different I've done lately was to install a few different video converters (I had about 50 Roadrunner and Wile-E Coyote cartoons to transcode LOL ) until I found one to suit my needs. I don't think a video converter would knock out my 'Tab' key, but who knows.... any thoughts, suggestions, advice, or input will be appreciated.
THANKS!

Answer:'Tab' key not working anymore....

Just curious Dlb, does the tab key work in notepad or a word document?

Is it possible some change could have been made to the keyboard in the Ease of Access in control panel, (I believe that's what is called in W7)? Though I wouldn't know how to change the tab key, just a spot to poke around.

And here's something about a program called Sharp Keys, though I have never used it and cannot attest to its integrity;

Last week our puppy dog has bitten on the adapter cable, although only a small hole shown it's needless to say that the laptop couldn't charge anymore. Ordered and received a genuine Lenovo 65W / 20V adapter, and connected to the power supply to have the battery charged again (was still about 80% full). When the battery ran empty, I noticed that it wasn't charging at all. Got a message that battery was almost charged, although only 2% remaining. Also the battery icon on the screen showed as beiing charged for approx. 10 seconds, and then nothing. Now the battery is completely discharged, tried all possible known solutions but can't get it working again... - Unplugged power & removed battery, held power button for 30 seconds, reconnected adapter.- Tried with and without battery- Used Novo button Both power and battery indicator lights in the front do not light up, no idea what else can be done.  Anyone who might be able help? Thanks!

While trying to clean up the drive of my Dell Inspiron 6400, I must have accidentally uninstalled something. Now my DVD player does not play DVD anymore.
When I go to ?My Computer?and then click on the DVD, I get an error message saying ?This file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action.? The DVD does neither play on DIVX nor on Windows Media Player.
I have checked under ?Device Manager? to see if there was a problem with the DVD driver, but it seems fine. There is no exclamation sign. I even uninstalled the driver and rebooted the computer. It still did not solve the problem.

Can anyone please give me a solution? It is getting quite frustrating.

Thank You in advance.

I took this 3 gig harddrive out of my old computer and tried to attack it to my XP, it didn't read it so then I put it back into my old computer and it doesnt work anymore, although it worked before I took it out, whats the problem?

Also I remember there was a boot password on that harddrive if that makes a diffrence.

Answer:HD not working anymore

It can mess up the mbr,of the hard drive.
If you try to use it as extra storage on the XP computer, you needed to change the jumpers to slave, on the back of the hard drive.
If it is a Maxtor, a tool from seagate support( who now have Maxt0r) might help to reset the drive.

Hi

I have a Toshiba L70-B 12z.
Couple of months ago I did experience some problems while gaming (it did crash a lot).
I brought it by the shop who sent it back to toshiba to repair.
They replaced the motherboard because apparently 2 of the 4 cpu's where broken.

When I did get it back I found out my internal speakers weren't working anymore. So I sent it back ones more.
This time, the 2 internal speakers weren broken (how, I don't get) and also replaced. Mind you, it is a 1,5 year old notebook.

When I got it back this time, DTS sound was not functional anymore.
I get the error 'Failed to find apo endpoint'.
I did try to uninstall DTS en re?nstall, but when tries to re?nstall I would get the error 'This product does not support DTS-processing'.
I tried various DTS drivers (older and newest) without succes.

It's very frustrating, since before '**** started hitting the fan' everything worked perfectly fine. DTS sound was working perfectly, and I really liked the sound. I also tried a lot of internet solutions. Re?nstalling windows 10, going back to windows 8.1 (since my laptop originally came with windows 8.1), uninstall, re?nstall and updating sound drivers (from realtek), install the audio enhancement driver, updating BIOS via servicestation, all the recommended drivers for my laptop, all the windows updates. Nothing works.

I really don't know what I can do more for making DTS work again.
I hope someone here can help me.

I dont know if I have inadvertantly changed a setting somewhere (although I'm pretty sure I haven't), but windows aero has started working differently.

If I have several tabs open in IE8, when I used to hover the mouse over the IE icon in the taskbar it used to give preview windows for ALL open tabs. But now when I hover I just get one preview window for the current tab or last viewed tab.

Also it doesn't always take you to the correct tab. E.G. I hovered over the icon and the preview pane showed this forum. The info bar above the preview pane referred a different tab, and when I clicked on the preview pane it took me to the other tab and not to the one shown in the preview.

It seems to be not working on other applications also. Take a look at the following snip. I have device manager AND a properties box open, yet the preview pane only shows device manager and not the properties window.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is please.

Answer:Windows aero started working differently

Try this, see if it is set correctly:

Open IE> Tools> Internet Options> General tab> Tabs> Settings

Make sure Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar is checked.

If not check it and restart IE. Open a few windows and check again.

Hello there. This is my first time posting in a windows forum so please bear with me. So, I tried the 1607 Anniversary Update from Windows 10 and it caused me lags and freezes in my desktop, so now I want to revert back to my former build. But, Windows is not letting me do so. Please help me.

That windows just pops up for a few seconds and proceeds to disappear. Doesn't make any sense at all. Are there any more ways to revert back to my old build other than this method? 'cause it clearly is not working for me. Thank you so much in the future for helping. Happy New Years.

Answer:Go back to an earlier build - Get started >>>> IS NOT WORKING.

Dear Porogami:
Welcome to TenForums. Sorry such a dire situation prompts you to your first forum post.
Alas rollback will fail if it can't find all the files it needs to do the job. If you've cleaned up Windows.old, for example, the files it needs to make the switch are MIA. Because rollback won't work, you must try other options. If you have restore points enabled, you might be able to use one of them to go back in time to a point prior to the upgrade. But restore points can have occasional problems, so your best bet -- if it's open to you -- would be to restore a backup made prior to the Anniversary Update upgrade. Hopefully, you've got one.
Take a look at your restore options (restore points and backups) and let us know what you've got to work with. Then, we can provide some additional advice.

Hi everyone. I made a post about this maybe a week ago, but I actually followed the instructions this time, so hopefully someone can help. It all started when I went to close a tab in firefox. The whole window closed instead of just the tab. No big deal. A "Mozilla Crash Reporter" popped up asking if I wanted to report the crash and if I wanted to restart firefox. I un-checked the "report crash" box and clicked "restart firefox". Instead of firefox opening, the box just popped up again. It continues to do so every time I try to open firefox. However, firefox opens in safe mode. So maybe the "crash reporter" was bogus, and clicking it unleashed the spyware. I don't know. But here's exactly what the box said, just for reference:

"Mozilla Crash Reporter

We're Sorry
Firefox had a problem and crashed.
We'll try to restore your tabs and
windows when it restarts.

To help us diagnose and fix the problem, you can send us a crash report. (this had the check box next to it)

RESTART QUIT"

I restarted my computer at this point, hoping that would fix the firefox problem, but it didn't. The computer took a while to start up, and when it did, the first thing I noticed was the taskbar was the old style - like how it is in safe mode - tan instead of blue. Firefox still did the same thing, and other programs wouldn't open (internet explorer, Ad-aware, malwarebytes, windows media player).

The IT department at one of our customers recently upgraded their entire company to IE 11 without warning. This should have broken most of the pages in our legacy Web Application because of the lack of support for IE8 in 'Compatibility
View'. But in a GoToMeeting we showed our customer how to turn-on 'Compatibility View' so we could show her which of our pages were broken, BUT THEY WEREN'T!!!  The entire legacy app was working perfectly!
We spoke with the IT person who performed the upgrade to IE11, and he said he didn't do ANYTHING with respect to creating a Site List, or enabling Enterprise Mode -- and even shared his Group Policy settings file... Nothing!  When we
went back and looked at her screen, our legacy app was working in IE11 WITHOUT the Enterprise Mode 'Building icon' to the left of the URL.
We are left to conclude that on 12/10/2015, he downloaded a version of IE11 that
natively handles IE8-level compatibility, and we would to get us some of that! But I can't find it anywhere. Here are the version details:
Version: 11.0.9600.16428
Update Versions: RTM  (KB2841134)
Product ID: 00150-20000-00003-AA459
The next version of our Web App is fully IE 11/Edge ready, but it isn't finished yet. But the bits that ARE done work FINE in our customers new IE11, but when we use Enterprise Mode in our own versions of IE11 to 'fix' the legacy app,
it breaks ... Read more

Hello to all,
In the last two weeks I have noted that my W7 Ultimate 64 Bit machine will boot, looks good and when I log into a user account the Desktop shows, without gadgets or icons and just sits that way for seemingly ever. Can't break in and must power down. I log into Start Normally and it will boot correctly. This has occurred usually in my user account and once on a rapid restart on the Owner account. I have used chkdsk to see if it is a physical problem. Out of my league but this hasn't occurred for 2 years and just intermittently occurring. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated. This has begun after but not immediately installing Advanced System Cleaner which I run occasionally.

Registry cleaners are generally not necessary and really shouldn't be used unless you review the entries selected for deletion and understand their purpose. With that said, most cleaners have a restore function and if you haven't made any significant changes to the system try to restore back to a time before you noticed the problem. Also, have you looked at Event Viewer to see if there is anything there that might help identify the issue.

I updated to Windows 10 about 2 weeks ago. Today on starting the PC, the initial BIOS splash screen displayed a while longer than usual then Windows decided to enter an Automatic Repair. I had this happen about a year ago in Windows 8 so repeated what I did then - I just turned of the PC, switched off at the mains and restarted and all appears fine now. There are no errors running SFC /SCANNOW and the boot configuration looks OK (see enclosed file).

What might have been the problem and what should I check to ensure my PC is properly configured?

Hi All,

I am in need of some help. I am a newbie trying to fix an old HP PAvillion 541C, with Win XP Home. I have tried so many different ways to fix this, to no avail and I am just tired. So I just want to wipe the hard drive clean and do a complete install of either Win XP Pro or Vista Business. I have managed to get my important documents and photos, so I don't care about any other files. How do I go about doing this?

Joeviking14

Answer:Started with Boot Disk Error

You'll need a CD/DVD for XP or Vista. You boot the system with the CD in the drive and you should see a message to press a key to boot from CD. After that follow the prompts. You can partition and format the drive during setup.

My thinkpad laptop running Windows Xp had the google redirect virus. I started to go through the cleaning outline and got as far as the superantispyware when I got a blue screen with an error message. Now it wont even boot in safe mode or to last known working settings, it just gets stuck in a loop with a "blue screen of death". I can get to the recovery console but that's about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also on the blue error screen under technical info is says:
STOP:0x0000007a (0xBA4CF524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

not sure if that means anything or not.

thanks

Answer:Started as redirect now it wont boot

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Do you know what SUPERAntuSpyware deleted exactly?

My guess is some system related file that was likely infected with Zero Access.

Try booting to the Recovery Console and running the below commands:

fixmbr
fixboot
exit
The 'exit' will cause a reboot. See if it will reboot normally

My PC Start-up has become extremely slow and "stepped" - but if I press the reset button it boots up regularly. What is the issue? Can I reinstall Windows 10 to ensure all is running as it should?
I don't want to use the reset option as this would require considerable reinstatement of many apps.

Answer:Why has my PC started to boot up extremely slowly?

I had this problem after upgrading so I did a reset wiping out everything on the system, this had a dramatic increase in speed and also gave me a chance to decide what applications I really needed. Just make sure you back up everything that's needed and have drivers for your hardware.

Hi, i have a laptop that i was using and it was working fine a few days ago, i had turned it off for a few days and left it off, However when i turned it back on a few days later it would not start up to desktop and started beeping continuously.

I looked up online for some possibilities and the beep codes etc, but my beeping tends to just continously beep, not one long beep, but as in it beeps once, twice, three times, four times etc ( No pause ).

I am assuming it could be a Proccessor problem, or a over heating problem/dust problem. I vacumed some dust out of the vents while it was off and did it carefully, i also have had it on a laptop cooler the whole time, yet it continouse to hapen.

The thing that is confusing me is, i decided to try and re-format it to a clean device with my windows 7 which was what it has been running ever since i bought it, Now i put in the windows 7 cd and restarted.

I then started to install a new windows 7, i went away from the laptop and let it do its thing, i came back and it had come back to the black screen asking what OS to start " Windows 7 " So i clicked it, and it took me back to re-install.

So not thinking right i did it again, and walked away, i did this like 3 or 4 times ( Lol ) Not knowing that i was actually installing extra Operating Systems within the operating system..

Now i ended up taking the CD out and completeing 1 of the Windows 7 Installs, where i found i had about 4-5 windows.old folders - ( How to delete th... Read more

All the sudden today, I get Windows Explorer has stopped working dialog box, which then causes win 7 to go completely black. Tried a couple restore points but they either failed or didn't fix.
I also get this usually now when logging into windows.
Was able to get in and run a scannow.
See file. How do I fix these errors?

I have a Dell with the factory oem win 7 disk.
win 7 64bit.

Answer:Started getting Windows Explorer stopped working, here is scannow

Just personal opinon but I'd opt for a Repair Install as the quickest way to try to fix these issues.

Repair Install

As the second warning says:

"You cannot use a OEM Windows 7 "Factory" Restore/Recovery type of installation disc that came with or created from a store bought computer to do a repair install with. These can only be used do a clean install instead."

So make sure your factory oem win 7 disk is an actual installation disk and not a Recovery disk. If you need an actual install disk your can download the ISO from here and save it to your desktop. Then burn it to a DVD. You'd use the 25-digit Product Key that's on a sticker on your computer when it comes time to reactivate with Microsoft.

Hey all,
I'm new to this forum. I'm trying to figure out what when wrong with my laptop. I had a trojan attack at some point previously and I'm not sure if it is related, but I recently found that my audio is not working. The audio doesn't work through my speakers as well as headphones. I'm using Windows 8.1, on my Acer Aspire E 15 E5-521-48KN. In the task bar (on the right-lower corner), there's an 'x' mark on the sound icon and when I hover over it, it says 'The Audio Service is not running.' I'm thinking this is probably a software issue and not a hardware one, but I'm not sure. I have tried re-installing the audio driver, but that didn't seem to help.

I would appreciate any help with this issue. I've tried going to a local computer repair store who has asked me to try formatting the laptop, but I'd like to try and avoid that if possible. I've ordered for a recovery disc just in case, however.

Thank you in advance.

Just wanted to add that when I try navigating to Control Panel, it's an empty window with the mouse in a waiting mode. It never really opens, so there's something amiss and I can't seem to figure out.

Hi,
I've had zonealarm free for the past week and every thing's been great but today in the middle of being on the net the internet stops working. I figured out that zonealarm was blocking the internet now. I don't know what happened sinse I haven't messed with any settings in ZA. If I shut ZA down the internet is fine. Any help?

I had it hooked up a few days ago before I moved my computer out to the living room. After hooking everything back up again my TV no longer shows my desktop and no settings I've tried in the nVidia control panel works. I'm using a 9500 GT.

Answer:S-video to RCA not working anymore

As I can't edit I have to reply to my own post.

OK thing is I was chatting with nVidia live support and he asked me to switch my TV from NTSC to PAL and after doing so my monitor went black and by the time I had rebooted with the s-video cord removed so I could see again live chat went offline.

So, anyone know how I undo that without having the TV attached as doing that again will just make my monitor go black again. Thanks.

Strange. The edit button showed up in this second post. Why doesn't it show up in the first one? Weird.

For some reason, awhile back, I used to be able to record with Stereo Mix on Audacity, Hypercam, even to other people on Skype. But all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it just stopped working. There was a time where it said it was unavailable, but now it says it is working, but when I try to record sound using Stereo Mix, it either doesn't record the sound, or the program doesn't recognize that Stereo Mix exists.

I have "Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller" under my Stereo Mix properties (I'm guessing that's like the driver or audio device name). When I try to record in Audacity, I get a message saying "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate." The input device (the Realtek AC'97 I'm guessing) says it's "working", and the project sample rate is the exact same as it says in my recording settings. My guess is that Audacity doesn't see "Stereo Mix" or "Realtek AC'97" as a device currently on my computer, which doesn't make any sense, cuz my computer says otherwise. It also doesn't make sense, because I'm able to select "Stereo Mix" as a device for recording IN Audacity itself.

I've read other posts about this problem, and none seemed to be of any help (I've tried the solution posted but didn't fix it). Is it because my "Stereo Mix" isn't set up to my speakers or something? Is it because I have Realtek AC'97 and not the HD one? Could it ... Read more

Hi, if this is the wrong forum for this post then I apologize but I have an internet problem. I am on dial up AOL and ever since I uninstalled some programs, one I remember N-Case, my internet won't connect passed step 4 on AOL. It will dial but will not connect. I think this is N-Case that is giving me the trouble, because this has happened before, but I can not go back, because system restore doesn't go that far back. Yes it has been that long. I just never really had any time to mess with it. So I believe it has messed with my settings, because also my network is messed up. It won't even allow me to make a multiplayer game, or find a game connected to the network. I can share files, but that is about it. Also says my IP is a bunch of 0's. If anyone can help me through this problem I would appreciate it very very much. Thanks for your time and help.

Oh, steps I have taken were:
Modem Helper - Passed
Reinstalling Modem Drivers
Reinstalling Windows XP
Reinstalling AOL

Okay it's a bit of a weird one, basically I think I've blown up the whole HDMI related hardware on my desktop. The lead I was using for HDMI wasn;t the most reliable and would have to be plugged out and in sometimes to get it working -

I've tried several other working hdmi leads - tested and it no longer works.
Also used VGA < on Desktop to HDMI < on TV - it doesnt work.

VGA to VGA is working thankfully so I'm using the desktop now to post for help. Any ideas how much this would cost to be fixed? or could I do it myself?. Thanks for any help.

I wanted to migrate back to Windows8.1, but the mediacreationtool doesnt let me download the windows8.1 iso file anymore. I guess this totally purposely, to force people into Windows10. It just says something like "cant download bla bla" the moment I click ok. A friend tested it too and it doesnt work.

Are there any other save mirrors for a Windows 8.1 x86 iso? Or can I get any logs by the mediacreationtool, why it's not working?

So in my PC I have a Sony DVD RW that I've had now for a good couple of years. It has worked fine forever and suddenly it isn't anymore. When I put in a DVD (and yes I have tried many, original copies and burned) it can read the title but it cannot play in any program (RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, PowerDVD). In Windows Media Player, it gives me a message that says "Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To view the DVD Troubleshooter, click More Information.", but I've tried adjusting the resolution and it hasn't helped. I also uninstalled the drive and re-installed it to no avail. If anyone has had this problem or has suggestions that might help I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

So streaming to my ps3 worked flawlessly on build 7000 but now with RC1 I seem to be having major problems. I add all my media to my media player library and it all shows up, then when I turn on my ps3 to stream the video it gets rid of anything in the administrator documents folders and just shows the stuff in the public documents folders on both the ps3 and windows media player. I've tried re-adding the files back into WMP and trying again with the same results, it just doesn't want to work. I have my streaming settings to allow access to all devices on the network and to stream my entire library. What is going wrong and how can I fix it?

Edit: The same goes for streaming to the 360, this is so odd...

Answer:Streaming Not Working Anymore

I just put anything i want to watch into Libraries/videos folder and my ps3 picks it up fine.

OK, this is probably going to be a long story, but please bear with me. So,  a few months ago I started playing/reading a Japanese Visual Novel that did not need Japanese Locale. Sometime  after that, I tried to install another VN, but I couldn't do it even if I used AppLocale (a little program that lets you run an application with a specific locale without having to change your whole computer to that locale), so I had to change my system locale to Japanese. This is where the problems begin. When I tried to continue reading the first VN again, it would crash immediately, and I found out that it was a registry issue caused by changing the locale. So I fixed that, and it ran, but the text would overlap, which means it was unreadable. I thought that maybe it was the Japanese locale that was causing that, so I tried running it with Chinese Simplified locale and it worked perfectly (AppLocale only lets you choose Chinese, Japanese or Korean), which was great. But the day after that (today), when I try to run it with Chinese locale, it doesn't run at all. No error message, nothing. I tried running it with Korean Locale but it's the same thing. What could have happened? I didn't install or change anything between then and now.BTW, I have Windows XP SP3 (old, I know). Any other information that you feel might be relevant I will gladly give.Thank you in advance.

I set my homepage to Google before so if I type something in the google search and goes and searches and I can get the page from there...but the URL address bar doesn't work anymore...

I also opened up the task manager and I saw like 20-30 processes called "verclsid.exe"

I restarted the comp...but same thing...then the "verclsid.exe" processes come up again...

what happened? It was either my mom or my dad who was using the computer before I came on...

I have explorer 6.0 on windows xp service pack 2

Answer:IE URL Address bar not working anymore

Verclsid.exe is used to verify a COM object before it is instantiated by Windows Explorer.

Greetings to all, I have been running win 8.1 for a while. At first Bluetooth was working fine. Then last week Bluetooth stopped working. Why, I have got a clue. What I did is just reinstall the drivers from ASUS web site but to no avail. I have looked at 'Event Viewer' but there is no error message pertaining to Bluetooth. In 'Services' Bluetooth is running. I am stumped as far was why my phone that used to connect via Bluetooth to my rig is does not connect anymore. Most of all, I do not know where to look next to solve the issue. My rig has been acting funny recently in many other ways; ie, windows update tells me updates are there to be installed by the update page in 'windows update' is blank. May be different issue than the Bluetooth but I think all related for some reasons. I don't pretend to know anything about IT but would surely appreciate some help PS: I have loads of DCOM errors which I have mentioned in previous post. I have read all I can about DCOM but still can't understand what it is use for and how I can solve issue pertaining to DCOM. zongo saiba

Hi there, brand new user on here but I have been browsing for awhile

I had an issue a few months ago that turned out to be having 2 different antivirus programs on my computer at the same time that kept causing Blue Screens. Nothing's been the same since then. Today I was just trying to get her running better and ran Verifier.exe and luckily the computer's up and running fine still, but I have absolutely no sound now. And the dummy that I am didn't write down exactly the steps I took while using Verifier.exe. I have an HP s5-1060 w/ 6 GB of RAM and an intel Core i5 @2.90 GHz

The thing is that the PC's saying it's working completely fine, no warning or error signs in device manager, the troubleshooter reports nothing wrong. But when i click on the little sound icon down there and the bar raises up and you're supposed to get that little beep.. nothing. I have two sets of headphones, tried both of them in the headphone jack in the front of the computer and in the speaker port in the back. Nothing. So it hadn't been the speakers. Which I hadn't been doing anything w/ them anyway, it's not that the sound is just turned down. It's really odd that the OS is reporting nothing wrong yet even when i try to plug in headphones, I get no sound whatsoever. I have tried to troubleshoot as much as I could but it's been a long day now and I can't figure anything else that it could be except something I did in that .exe program and idk enough about it to go from there. I need help, pleas... Read more

Answer:Satellite A50-110 isn't working anymore

HI Ellen,

Do you see the normal Toshiba splash screen during the initial Post and BIOS load ?. If you do then the flashing green cursor in the top left hand corner of your screen indicates that there is a problem with your hard drive and the system cannot boot the operating system correctly. You will need to try to restore your OS from the recovery CDs and if that will not work then you may need to replace your hard drive.

If you do not even see the Toshiba splash screen or the BIOS settings then you may have a faulty main board in which case you will need to refer to an Authorised Service Agent for your notebook to be checked.

When I put a dvd in the dvd-player for a game or anything, it used to autostart that dvd. But suddenly, it doesn't autostart anymore. I have to start it manually, by clicking the drive and choosing "autorun". It is the same for other drives as well, such as cd-rom drive. How do I fix this?
if it's possible, I would like not to install any programs. So are there any configurations or properties I can check?

Hi guys,

just got my new laptop and I'm loving vista.

windows + tab is a really cool feature but it has recently stopped working for me.

alt + tab works fine, but when I hit windows + tab it acts as if I'm just hitting the tab key

I know the windows button is still functioning properly because windows + d still takes me to the desktop.

I don't recall changing any settings that would effect this, but maybe I'm wrong.
Do any of you have a possible fix for this problem?

Windows 7 x64 SP1
Acer Aspire 5830TG

For about a month now, some software in my computer has not been working properly - it crashes immediately on starting, without giving an error message. The problem seems to be fixed after hibernating and restarting my computer several times (Not always), but then it stops working properly once again when I shut down and restart my computer instead of hibernating and restarting it.

The following software seems to be encountering this problem:
Daemon Tools User Interface
Free Download Manager
AVG User Interface

(Note - only the User Interface of AVG crashes. The rest of it works perfectly, detects viruses, etc. Same for Daemon Tools - ISOs are mounted properly, but the UI does not work)

I posted in the virus help forum, but the tools they asked me to use did not give any positive results, so this is most probably NOT due to a virus. Everything else seems to be working properly.

Has windows gone corrupt?

Please help. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Some software not working anymore

Normally when software starts to play up, a reinstall usually resolves - but as this problem involves more than one program, perhaps running a clean boot may pinpoint the cause should there be a conflict with another program on start up.

Cancel the auto-fix to read through the MS article.

Hey there!
Since today I have a problem, some programs are just not starting anymore.
For example, there would be the Device Manager, the Event Manager, Computermanagement.
It just shows the loading mouse for one or two seconds, but nothing happens, not even after trying to start it with cmd.exe (which still works) or PowerShell.

I don't know what to do, tried resetting my save point but that didn't change much.

Any help is highly appreciated!

I've had a TDK CD-RW 40x for a few years now, and it has been working fine up until recently.

I can use the CD drive once, and then after that, when I go into My Computer and hit the CD drive (with a CD in it), it tells me: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function" but with no CD in the drive, it asks me like regular to put one in. The only way to get it to work again is to restart the sytem. And then, it will work once, again until next restart.

The only thing I really changed was upgrading my Nero burning software to the newest version. Burning works fine, but that counts as my "one" CD use per restart. The InCD software for CD-RW's doesn't work at all.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure of which isolated incident that caused my player to stop working, but none-the-less it has me stomped. Can someone help?

When I try to access my dvd player I get a Microsoft error D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I tried to uninstall the player and reboot, but at no avail.

The only thing that I can think of is that the eDonkey program that I downloaded caused this.

Side notes: the drive is spinning...it has power based on this and light flashing on player. Also, I get the disk looking cursor on my screen when I shut the tray.

Anyone help?

Answer:Need Help...Dvd player not working anymore

does the drive itself actually work, in that can it read any discs? It may be that it has become defective. You could try a lens cleaner.

Also you can try going into the device manager by going into the start menu, selecting run and typing devmgmt.msc. Look under cdrom/dvd drives and see if there are any problems there. One thing to try would be to uninstall the drive through the control panel, reboot and let windows redetect the drive.

In regards to the edonkey theory, go over to the spyware forum and follow the steps to check your system for malware.

recently at home I switched from wireless to cable. However, when I go back to university (which is where I am now), It's back to wireless. However, first time I tried to pick up the wireless again (which always used to work), I couldn't.

I am using a HP dv6000 notebook. I tried uninstalling and updating to the latest wireless drivers etc... but no luck. I know it's defiantly not a router issue cause my housemates are all connected and I tried connecting to another wireless network and failed.

I did a windows diagnostic test and it said there was a problem with the wireless but couldn't tell me what.

Any help would be appreciated : )

I am on the HTC One with Verizon. The Uber app repeatedly gets the error, "cannot connect to server." When I logged out and attempted to log-in, the app crashes. Reinstalling did not solve the issue.

Answer:Is Uber App not working anymore?

I just downloaded the Uber app and created an account, so it is working for me.

I can't access any of the features in the Start Menu except for Desktop (E.g. I click on Mail and the tile has the little animation like it's been presses but nothing else happens). I've also been having trouble with my Cyborg V3 mouse, which worked fine until I moved my computer (which is when the Start Menu started playing up too).

For the mouse I've tried manually installing the drivers after downloading them from Saitek's driver page only for me to be brick walled (I followed the on screen prompts but it came to 'Please select which device you want to install' and wouldn't register my mouse as being plugged in), I tried downloading the driver from Windows Update but it just says it failed to install (Error code: 800f0219). I tried going into Device Manager (it came up as an Unknown Device and kept flashing between the 'Other Device' category and the 'Human Interface category'), uninstalling the drivers I currently had and then re-installing them through Device Manager, which came up saying there was some error with the INF file ('written for W95 or later'). I've also tried defragging and cleaning my registry.

As for when I moved my PC... I was just moving it from one side of the room to the other, turned off the wall socket, unplugged everything, plugged everything into the back of my PC (didn't notice these sockets hadn't been switched off too) and I ended up getting electrocuted plugging my signal cable into my monitor (I didn't think much of it at the time but ... Alright.First of all hi to everyone. My shift button on keyboard is not working.I don't know why.I repaired my system on 2 January, taken keyboard away, disk, etc. I know how to do those stuffs, because i needed to clean him.On 15 January i got a problem that shift key is going on lack activity.Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.Now it works no more. The interesting thing is that... it may sound ''funny'' because one day i just tested and my shift key works only when i use shift key+K letter. So when i hold shift with K,L,0,9, (something from these 4) it works and then i must hold shift+any of that 4 keys and then i can type everything like _"("(("("$("$("!!!)?>?. Without that,my shift is not working.I assume it has to do with shortcuts, etc. They told me on other forum that my Keyboard is problem and it is Hardware problem not Software nature. So any ideas?

I can turn on my pc, but I cant get into safe mode or normal mode, safe mode I just get a black screen, if I move the mouse a little bit, I can see the cursor, I tried to type the password blind but that didnt work. Normal mode I just see my background picture, date and time, and when I press anything I see my name and a little spinning circle for a little second and then back to the background thingy... I have been having this problem since Thursday night, I have been looking everywhere for a fix but nothing helps... Please help!

Answer:updated my pc, not working anymore!

What do you mean by updated? Updated hardware? Updated software? Windows Update? Anyway, do you have a Windows install DVD or the user-created Window repair usb or dvd? If so, maybe Startup Repair will be all you need to do. I'm a Windows 7 person, so the above may not be applicable to you, I'm guessing at a possible solution.

About a week ago my notebook started losing time. I initially thought it was a failing cmos battery, but it happens even when the notebook is left on. If i watch anything in full screen, the screen turns off to save power, or i play a full screen game, the clock doesn't keep up. Sure, fixing it temporarily is easy, but highly irritating. If anyone has a fix i'd love to hear it.
I'm running Windows 10 FYI.
