No Thumbnails in Open File Dialogs or Windows Explorer - Why??

Question: No Thumbnails in Open File Dialogs or Windows Explorer - Why??

I got a new computer with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I find it very annoying that in all the Open File dialog boxes and even Windows Explorer there does not seem to be a selection under the View menu to show thumbnails of image files. Even when I select Contents and highlight the file it still only shows a generic icon. Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help

Preferred Solution: No Thumbnails in Open File Dialogs or Windows Explorer - Why??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello David, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have thumbnail previews enabled.Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable
If you do, then double check to make sure that you have Windows Photo Viewer set as the default program with all of it's associations.Default Programs - Set a Program's Default Associations

File Open and File Save As dialog boxes do not show all files and folders known to be present, i.e., that show in Windows Explorer.

- This happens in all programs.
- It is not that the files are hidden or system files.
- It is not that the dialog is only showing files of a certain type.

It gets partway through the list of files and folders and stops. If I type in a sub-folder it will go to that folder, and then when I go back all the files will be shown. It is like it had to "reset" or "rescan" the file structure or something.

I only noticed this problem over the past few weeks. Don't know what might be different about my machine in that time.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Answer:File Open and Save As dialogs do not show all files -- not the obvious

Have you tested by showing hidden, folders and files in folder options ?
This is usually a sign of malware but many people seem to be having it,
The problem is not many of them add what security suites they have installed or any prior security suites ?
So the issue seems to be in limbo.

Hello,

I noticed yesterday that after using File Explorer for a short while, it stops showing any thumbnails, and only shows a plain white icon, not even the default icon for a file type. I tried all the usual methods for showing thumbnails, but to no avail.

Then, after a short while, it just stops working altogether. If I try to change folder, I get the message "Working on it..." and a green (lack of) progress bar in the address bar, but nothing happens. It just sits there and refuses to show me the contents of any folder, even "This PC".

The only way I have found to solve this is to restart the machine. As you can imagine, this isn't very practical!

Anyone any ideas? It's making it really hard to do any work. Thanks.

Answer:Thumbnails disappear in File Explorer, then Explorer freezes

Hi,
1. Do you have any system restore points or disk images you can use to restore your PC to how it was on a date prior to this problem developing?
(We strongly and repeatedly recommend people use disk imaging.. it means you can often recover your PC to a working state without assistance, quickly and efficiently without stress).

2. As an interim measure, try using a different file manager.

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

I have window 10 home.

I'm in the directory on my hard disk c:\
I can see maybe 2-3 thumbnails preview the rest are icons and i have like 400 items most of them thumbnails/images of some types: png jpg bmp.

My hard disk c: have 93.6 GB free out of 139 GB
And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

Hi

Win7 Ultimate

I hope I can explain this clearly.

When I go to an Open or Save dialog box in any application and I click on any folder any where in Windows outside of the application, the Save as... or Open dialog for that application switches to that folder, which is great feature because it quickly enables me to change the location in those dialogs. It's not currently working.

My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

Thank you for any help

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

Is it possible to turn the application icons off (or just use a generic icon) in List and Detail view (of the Open/Save dialogs). It may be a FireFox problem (2.0.0.11), but if I Save to Disk a file on the 'net, and save into an already pretty crowded Downloads directory and then have to scroll through to see if it exists already, it takes an eternity as the system has to load all the icons as I scroll right. FF appears to be using the native XP (SP2) dialog boxes (rather than it's own). I've bumped up MaxIconCache in the registry to 2000 which helped alot on the desktop and start menu ? but not on Open/Save.

Gracias

In Windows 98, I was able to access my folder shortcuts in all open & save dialog boxes, no matter what program I was using. In XP, the shortcuts are all hidden. For instance, in the My Documents folder I had a shortcut to my D:\ drive (2nd hard drive where most of my files are stored) and it was accessible in Win98 whenever I viewed My Documents in an open/save dialog box so I could get to it quickly. In XP, no shortcuts are displayed in these dialog boxes.
Is there a way around this?

Hi,
did anyone experience the following:
- WinXP SP2 & e.g. Office 2003 Std SP1.
- Create a new document in e.g. Word
- save the document anywhere on the local machine and create a shortcut on the Desktop
- close Word and reopen it, then try to locate the Shortcut to the document

I could not see any shortcuts to files or folders within the open dialog.
As I found something about Smart Tags, I've completely disabled them and didn't even install the PlugIns from Office but the behaviour remains the same.

All suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks, BBC.

Windows Explorer as well as other desktop programs failed to respond to a right click from any interface. I was also having printer errors that involved total failure to print. At first, I thought I needed to uninstall all my Epson software and printer, but that resulted in no change. I searched on line and the only idea that made sense to me was the suggestion that this was likely a Context Menu Handler problem. It suggested downloading a Shell File Extensions View (ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows) from NirSoft version 1.8.6.0 which was free. The first download I did not use out of fear so I accessed the Context Menu area via regedit, but saw no way to disable any suspected third party Context Menu Handlers. So, in the end, I swallowed hard and ran the NirSoft application. I was able to see all the shell items in the registry, and sorted them by age, the most recent was a Context Menu Handler from Norton Internet Security occurring during the most recent update. The manager software allowed me to disable just that one handler, and after a restart, File Explorer and everything else behaved normally. So, now I am posting this so it only takes you less than an hour to address this issue, where I spent 4-5 hours on it. I reinstalled the Norton Internet Security and all is still well.

Hello, jimbang22. Welcome to Windows EightForums. Thanks for posting that. That will be a great timesaver for some.

So much for 3rd party software to goof up a system, especially an AV product. No real need to use it on a home computer with 8/8.1 with included Defender. Enterprise systems are a different story.

Got lucky early on in computing with good advice from an IT friend of mine. He told me to watch out for 3rd party maintenance and AV products for most are crap. Through the years watching I can see how true that is.

Again, thanks and welcome.

I am noticing that when I click to open a folder in the File Explorer, the folder automatically opens in a new window.

Then if I click on another folder or file, that automatically opens in a new window as well and so on. It is annoying to have to keep closing windows.

I cannot locate how to change that behavior back to where I had it where it only opened in another window if I clicked for it to do so and not by default.

I am not seeing that as an option in the menus.

Any suggestions or advice here?

Hi sunrise12,
you can certainly turn that off, go to any folder or file and press "alt", then press T (Tools) and then press O (Folder Options), this is your folder options, the first thing you come to is this :

select "open each folder in the same window", apply and click ok and that should fix this for you.

Hi all, can't seem to find anything relating to this issue but feel free to send link if already discussed..

On my Outlook 2003 (Yes I know!), I often add/remove my pst archives via File>Data File Management.

The 'Open' dialog opens and defaults to the 'C:\Users\myname\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook' folder. Because we keep our PST files on the server and not in this local location I have a shortcut in this folder that links to the server folder.

Since upgrading to Windows 10, when I go to add my PST it takes me to this local folder but the shortcut to the server folder isn't there. At the bottom of the Open box if I change the Save As Type to All Files (*.*) then I can see the shortcut to the network folder but when I double click on it, it complains because I haven't clicked on a PST file.

Would anyone have any idea why this is happening and a possible solution please?

Thanks
John

Hello everyone.

I have been unable to view the properties of certain files. Whenever I select the file, right-click, and select Properties, Windows Explorer crashes and restarts. The same thing happens when I try to select Properties through the Organize menu dropdown.

I found a couple of relevant threads in this forum, but they don't seem to have been resolved:

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-d...ties-file.html
Right Click Properties Crash

My issue is more similar to the first thread. It is only files, not folders or drives. And it is only certain types of files; the affected file types seem to be video files in general, while all other file types seem OK, although mp3 files seem to be a mixture of both (some works and some fails).

Anyway, I have tried all 4 methods provided by Sir George in the first thread. My graphic drivers are up to date, the sfc/scan came up clean (screenshot 1), the Microsoft Safety Scanner came up clean (screenshot 2), and the problem persisted after booting in safe mode, as well as after a clean boot.

I have even scanned and fixed the registry using AVG PC TuneUp, turned off the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature, and scanned the hard drives for errors. There were no errors found from scanning the hard drives, and the problem remained.

Can anyone please provide me with further advice or instructions? Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi there!

So, diving straight in:
The situation:
When I double click (or click once and press Enter) a folder, it opens twice. This happens most of the time. Here's a video showing this behaviour.

Before you answer:
The issue is not coming from how I've set up File Explorer. Under "Browse folders" I haven't checked the option "Open each folder in its own window", so that's not the cause. Not only that, but I also haven't checked the option "Launch folder windows in a separate process".

However, there is one strange thing I've noticed. Whenever I browse specific folders (those affected by the double-window plague), I see that a new shortcut is created on the left of the window. Here's a screenshot. This shortcut is exactly the same as the one under "This PC", according to their Properties. Both have the same location, name and size. However, what's not identical is the behaviour - if the folder is under "This PC", it will not open twice. If it is, the opposite will happen.

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, upgraded from Windows 7.
Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hi,
I need help. About a week ago Windows 10 started working in an abnormal manner on my PC: I wasn't able to open File Explorer or Control Panel, whether from the start menu or from basically any application that calls for those (file explorer or control panel).

I tried running command prompt (admin) sfc /scannow, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth commands several times but that doesn't fix the problem at all. As a last resort I downloaded a brand new Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft site and performed a clean installation formatting my HDD. Things were OK the first minutes, but then the problem starts again with the each new installation of Windows. I don't know what is causing File Explorer and control panel to crash, maybe its a faulty driver or windows update itself. I have installed Windows 10 from that ISO file several times and every time after a few minutes of me doing nothing with the computer, it fails again.

The first driver I update to be able to use my monitor is the nVidia driver (361.43).

Answer:Windows 10 can't open File Explorer or Control Panel

Hi, do you have any such crashes in Safe Mode? Please try- you would not be using the Nvidia driver then.
(You could access Safe Mode via SHIFT + restart and work through the rather confusing set of menus to Safe Mode).

The clean installation would seem to eliminate 3rd party programs as it sounds as if you hadn't time to install any.
Can you find any useful reports in the Event Log? (See event viewer).

If you complete your system specs, someone might be able to offer advice on your hardware.
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums - Windows 10 Forums

Another completely different line would be a hardware fault, of course, as you say the problem developed suddenly with your PC, and persists after a clean install.

Thanks
John

I have encountered an annoying little bug that I cannot solve and it's been a while ago that it started. I have downloaded a few files (.mkv) and have gotten thumbnails working for the files. Anyway, after the file was downloaded, they were stuck open in windows explorer. I cannot tell you if this started before or after gaining MKV thumbnail support, but I can tell you that if I uninstall the DIVX Plus application splitter and codec, it still remains affected. I cannot move or rename the files as they are constantly open in Windows Explorer. I can copy the files to new locations but the copies are affected the same way. If I close explorer.exe in the task manager and use CMD to rename and move the files, it works fine but when explorer.exe is reactivated, it opens them once more. (I also have taken to moving the files in Linux to save the hassle of CMD typing.) After a restart the files are open by windows explorer. After renaming the files with Linux (or CMD) they are STILL open by windows explorer. The files play perfectly in both WMP and MPlayer. I don't know what is causing this. How can I close these files in Windows Explorer so I don't have to deal with it?

Do you think the files are corrupted in someway keeping them open? Could it be the thumbnails? I have already used disk clean up to delete the thumbnails and reapply them and that didn't work. Turning off the thumbnails in Folder Options doesn't fix it either. So I don't actually think... Read more

I have searched the web. Maybe it can't be done.

I'm on XP Pro SP2.
I use "Details" view as my default in Windows Explorer, and would love to have that be the default view for all my File Open and File Save dialogs, but they always default to "List" view < grrrrrrr >.

Some MS apps can be forced to keep Details view *for that session only* by setting to Details and holding down the CTRL key while processing the first file, but after re-opening the app, I'm back to List view.

Whoever at Microsoft made the executive decision to make List the default needs to have itching powder sprinkled in his shorts.

I'm hoping that with all the combined knowledge on this forum, someone has a solution.

Thanks -

My applications insist on showing Save As > My Pictures and File > Open > My Pictures inThumbnail view. How can I change this *default* to List View please, like all my other 'normal' folders? It seems hard-coded into XP that when you open a My Pictures (or My Videos) browsing pane, you want to see thumbnails. I definitely do not! I have scores of sub-folders in these very large folders, and I want to see their *names*, and as many at once as possible.Note that I am not asking about customising Explorer/My Computer views. Hello guys. WinXP has a great app named XFilesDialog, it allows us to set custom size to GetOpenFileDialog and GetOpenFileDialog, and added custom buttons so that we could add favorities and have history link to latest folders and files.

But unfortunately the developer had been very lazy last years and takes more than 1 year to release 1 update with some bugfixes.

Is there any alternative, fully developed for XP64 and 7 Win64, with the same features?

Hello,

A friend just showed me a weird problem he is having with his computer. He has a folder under My Documents, in which he keeps his work files. He emails these files using Gmail, which he accesses via Internet Explorer.

All worked fine until a few days ago, when he noticed that when he clicked the link in Gmail to attach a file, his folder wasn't listed in the Open File dialog. He looked in Windows Explorer, and could see the folder OK. I tried opening Word and using the Open File dialog there, and the folder wasn't visible.

If he clicks in the address bar, and adds the folder name to the path, it opens the folder, but shows it as empty. I actually has two subfolders. If he adds the name of a subfolder, then the Open File dialog shows the files in that folder.

I checked the permissions on the folder, and couldn't see anything odd. What I don't understand is how the folder can be visible in Windows Explorer, and not in the Open File dialog.

Anyone any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Folder appears in Windows Explorer, but not in the Open File dialog

Rightclick on the folder where you can actually find it in Explorer, look at the path. That is where it now resides.

If it cannot be found there when browsing in from Computer>C then I'd back up the files in it to a new folder you temporarily create in C root, delete the problem file and recreate it.

Can I batch open file explorer windows to a specific window size and location on screen? I have four folders that I need to watch at all times. When the computer is restarted, I have to manually open the folder windows to each directory location, resize and move them. It's kind of a pain. I've seen tutorials on how to manually resize the window and have the OS remember the settings. This doesn't apply because the computer is remoted into by at least 4 different computers, all having different resolutions.

Answer:Batch open & resize windows file explorer windows

I don't think a batch file in itself will help you because window sizes and locations are held in the registry. There might be scope for a reg file (possibly initiated by a batch file) but I have no idea where you would find the settings to use. About the only way to go about it would be to use some program to snap the registry before and after changes, so that you can determine what values to work on in the reg file. It all sounds rather complicated to me.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

My original problem was this: whenever I double-clicked on a thumbnail in Windows Explorer, the picture would open up in Paint Shop Pro but when I wanted another picture to come up in the PSP application that was already open, it would open up another PSP instead.

I thought I found a solution to this after looking online (can't remember exactly what it was now but I entered something in start, run) only now I have another problem because I can't view any thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

Can anyone help me get my thumbnails back and also solve my problem with PSP opening up lots of times for every photo I want to view? Thanks!

Hi everyone!

I tried to ignore this problem, but it has become increasingly frustrating when I have to work with files in Windows Explorer.

The problem is, when I right-click on a file and choose Properties, it takes 5-8 seconds to open the File Properties Window. Strangely, when I do the same with folders (Folder Properties) the window opens almost instantaneously as it should. I have tried to fiddle around with ShellExView but to no avail - after all, I assume that program is just for controlling context menu entries. I searched and googled but I couldn't find any similar problems, the closest I got was that software.

Do you know what's the problem? Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,

I love the way that Internet Explorer 8 displays all of its open tabs/windows in a list view when you hover over the IE8 Taskbar Icon, and there are too many tabs/windows open to display them as thumbnails. I would like it to always display the open tabs/windows in a list view. Furthermore, I want my other programs, such as Outlook, where I have multiple items open, to display them in a list, rather than thumbnails, when I hover over the Outlook icon in the taskbar.

Is there any way to get this to happen, even if I have to use a software add-on?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Best regards,

Hi All

Although I have this problem primarily with gmail, I think the question belongs here since it's a selection window that (I think) comes from Windows XP.

My problems is this: Pretty much every time I want to attach a file to an email, it's a file that I've only just modified. So, when I click on Attach File then Browse, the 'Details' view would be best, sorted by 'Last Modified', but what I get instead is the List view - i.e. it doesn't remember my previous choice.

Is there a tweak to make the "browse" window always open with Details/Sort by Date Modified?

I'm happy for this to be the default in any context. Nine times out of ten I want the most recently worked-on docs in other applications too.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Defaults for file selection dialogs

Interesting that no one knows this. I would have thought that a registry key or maybe a switch or whatever would have controlled it.

I'll bump it up once for further consideration.

Hey all!

A woman called me earlier today and in a frantic fashion told me she had been trying to solve this problem for around 1 or 2 hours where her file dialog boxes (Open, Save, Save As, etc) were coming up larger then the screen! She said that whenever she would attempt to save a file the box for it would pop up and be so large that the buttons went down below the taskbar and she could not even see to click them. I tried telling her every method to resize the window that I knew of -- all of which ending with no avail... the "Resize" option under the alt menu was even inactive (Wasn't black like an active button.)

We also checked the screen resolution and it was correct so I am stumped!

I tried Googling a solution, search MS and checking out of course TSG ( ) and could not find a solution. Please post with any leads.

Also, I love the new layout.

Thanks!

P. S. I am using XP, so I am not of much help to her.

Hi.
I have been fighting with this since I purchased this notebook with Windows 7 in 2010.
I do a lot of photo editing.  I may have around 40K image files on my computer.  When I am doing a lot of editing, a problem arises as the thumbnails do not update in window explorer.  So, if I am working on several images and will open and reopen files, if I have made an improvement on a file, the thumbnail will not update and it gets confusing trying to find a picture that I have just edited.
I have sought suggestions on this issue a dozen different times.  When I troll through forums, this is a  common problem.
Here's a spoiler alert ... cleaning the thumbnail cache does not fix the problem. Matter of fact, here is a classic "cookbook" recipe on how to fix this from another forum ...

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10797-thumbnail-cache-clear-reset.html

As usual, the answer is never found and the solutions move from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Since Bleeping is my favorite stop, I thought I would seek an answer here rather than letting Google find another false positive to my question.

Thanks.

Answer:Updating thumbnails in Windows Explorer

My experience is that the thumbnails reflected by Explorer view...only update when the folder/Explorer window is opened.

I suppose that using a photo album, rather than explorer, might result in the desired updated images you seek.

I tend to give any edited image a new filename, keeping track of them in that manner while also retaining my originals.

Anyone know the relationship between an image file and its thumbnail ? I'd assumed that the file was read and the thumbnail dynamically created when I select to view with Thumbnail or Slideshow option. The point being that I have a file which only about 5% of the image shows in the thumbnail but the image file is intact and can be fully 'previewed' or viewed. Any ideas ? N.B. it is almost 47mb in size but I have others larger than that which don't exhibit this 'problem'. More of a nusiance than anything but curious to understand. Have refreshed the image file from another source (CD) but still the same. Thumbnail of CD is ok.

Answer:Images and Thumbnails in Windows Explorer

XP?Right click on the thumbnail in question, and from the menu try the 'refresh thumbnail' option, and see if this helps. If that does not help, open the containing folder, locate the file called 'thumbs.db' and delete it. close the folder and re-open it. FX'D

I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. One last thing, the computer seems as it's freezing and not updating the thumbnails, but currently the CPU usage is only 4% under Task Manager.

Answer:Windows Explorer not showing Thumbnails

Did you make any changes to your Windows Operating System recently? Sounds like the aftermath of a "tune up" that went wrong.

That being said, the data that has no thumbnails.... can you open them and view the data, I'm curious to know if it's corrupted.

Good morning all..

How do i look at the actual images when i choose thumbnails in windows.

I used to be able to see the pictures when i chose the thumbnail options, but all i see now is the type of icon they are. for ex. the gif or jpeg icon.

I don't know if i did something or not.

Thanks.

Not matter how many times I let Explorer build the thumbnails, after any reboot or shutdown/power-on the thumbnails get erased and I have to rebuild them again. It happens with all images and videos the same. Any idea why is this happening?

IMO, Windows 8 is definitely cool, but it has some rough edges that should've been ironed out before prime time.

Answer:Windows Explorer Thumbnails not getting saved

I too experience these behaviour. everytime I open Explorer (File Explorer on Windows 8) it always loads the thumbnails it doesn't save...

any ideas guys?

Problem fixed. Thread closed.
System restored.

At first, my Windows Explorer kept closing itself. I browsed around the web for a solution, and I found one at this thread:
https://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2040268.php

As suggested by the last poster, marcher, I typed in regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll and regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll.
At first, I was fine with it, but now I'd like my thumbnails to show again. Does anyone know how?

Answer:Showing thumbnails in Windows Explorer

Try, if using XP -

Tools / Folder Options / View / Show hidden files and folders

Make sure it's ticked for "Show" rather than "Hide"

In several programs, including Outlook Express, I would like to be able to move folders in open Save/Open and Insert Picture dialogs (in order to avoid lots of scrolling). Now my folders are (mostly) at "the end of the line," at the right, in the dialog boxes.(I would like to see the folders appear at or near the left side when I insert an attachment or a picture or try to open a file in these programs.)I'm guessing I inadvertently changed a setting (a global setting?) . . . because the folders and their icons used to appear "at the top of the line," readily accessed after selecting File>Open or File/Save.In my attachment, you can see, as shown by the slider at the bottom, that the folders are at the right side of the window. I have also tried to fix this, looking for the My Places Bar in the open/save dialogs of several apps, without finding it . . . although I didn't look in all apps.

Answer:graphically moving default localtion of folders in Open/Save dialogs

Try this free download. There are several such tools aimed to achieve the same goal but this is the best IMHO:http://download.cnet.com/Truly-Your-Places...4-10933134.html

Using Windows XP Pro 2003 with SP3 a small but annoying problem occurred recently.  In Windows Explorer or Windows Internet Explorer (v. 7) I can double-click to open a file when I'm in full or maximum screen size, but not when I'm in the smaller or 'restore' size.  In the restore size, I can open folders or subfolders, but not individual files by double-clicking.  I've tried various ways to correct this but so far have not succeeded.  Does anyone have an answer like my wife announcing "it's right in front of your nose!"?

Answer:Double-clicking to open a file in Windows Explorer 'restore' screen size

Have you used a programme called 'Windows installer clean up' at any point?

Hello, I have Windows 7 Pro X64, and fully updated. All repairs have already been performed. I have also disabled the always show icons option in explorer.
Recently, I lost the ability to view MP3 art thumbnails in windows explorer. Explorer also cannot read their ID tags and shows blanks for all fields. When I view the MP3s in dedicated programs such as MP3Tag or iTunes etc., I see the art and tags just fine. I've researched this issue for days without any solution to resolve the problem.
These MP3s show up just fine in windows explorer on my other Windows 7 computer.
Thank you in advance.

Windows explorer on my system cannot display all the thumbnails my photo folder. When the pictures are copied to a newly created folder, all are initially shown. However when I access the folder later, a lot of the thumbnails are gone : only the default
icons are shown.
I have set folder options to Always show icons, never thumbnails.
I have even tried deleting the thumbnail cache and rebuilding the cache but to no avail.
Could anyone help me on this please?

is there anyway to increase the Size of Thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

Answer:is there anyway to Increase the Size of Thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

From http://www.tweakxp.com/article36841.aspx

"The thumbnail view in windows explorer gives you easy access to a portfolio of images, but the default image size may not be to your liking. To control the thumbnail dimensions, go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer. Make a new DWORD value named ThumbnailSize. Double click the value and type in a number in decimal anywhere from 32 to 256. Making it smaller will display many more images on the screen for quicker perusual. Its an immediate change by the way, so keep regedit open and mess around..."

I think the default size is 75.

They used to. Now all that appears when View is set to "thumbnails" is the Adobe PDF icon.

I used both Jaws PDF Creator and Acrobat 6 to create the PDFs, still no thumbnails appear in Windows Explorer, or in PowerDesk.

What might be the problem?

Other machines on my network do not have this problem. I have tried the following below, but still no fix. Any suggestions without having to wipe the machine?

1. Folder Options: Always show icons, never thumbnails is unchecked
2. Disk cleanup
3. Reset Folders

Hello WonderBot,

You might see if clearing and resetting the thumbnail cache may be able to help if it may have gotten corrupted.

well, i think i remember in windows xp that whenever you had pictures in any folder, and you were in that folder using windows explorer, that you were able to see a thumbnail of the actual picture IN the folder....

but in windows vista, and now in windows 7 (i upgraded a while ago), i'm not able to see the thumbnail of the actual picture itself....all i see inside the pictures folder (or any folder with pics for that matter), is a little thumbnail of a blue mountain...

i have a bunch of pictures, and i dont like having to click on every single one until i find the one i'm looking for....it VERY inconvenient and time consuming.

so, does anyone know how to fix this? make it so i can see thumbnails of the ACTUAL PICTURE, and not of a blue mountain for every single picture?

Answer:How do i see picture thumbnails in Win7 Windows Explorer??

See this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11738...ble.html?filter[2]=File Folder SettingsIn your pictures library, set your view to medium icons.

Things I've tried:

1. I have Haali Media Splitter installed (from CoreAVC) options>>explorer integration (yes)>>Thumbnails offset (10000)
2. WMP Playback Pack
3. DivX Preview

None of those worked. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. The KMPlayer is the default to play my MKV files (works great), but I can change that to Windows Media Player if needed to show the details and thumbnails. Any suggestions?

And I can't install DivX Plus Codec Pack like other people have recommend because my laptop isn't connected to the internet (no wireless). To install the other things I've just put the installer on a USB and then installed them from the USB onto my laptop.

Recently windows started having a problem displaying thumbnails for JPGs. If I load a folder of images it shows them all for a moment, then swiftly changes loads of them to white blanks.

A bit more investigating and I realise it's only for image files over 10MB. I'm a photographer, so looking at images litterally all day, so it's quite an annoyance! Or course I use other software for sorting, organising, resizing etc, but plenty of times you just want to load a folder and see the images.

Here's a screengrab, sorting a folder by size, anything larger than 10MB is a white blank icon:

Any ideas?

Yesterday I uninstalled opera and IObit malware fighter.
The uninstaller deleted relevant registry entries.

Since then I am having problem that
1- In explorer DVD Ram Drive shows correctly as drive G, but on insertion of a DVD disc it would not change to the name of the inserted DVD. Although when I click on the icon the correct folders in that disc are displayed.
2- If I change the disc in my DVD drive, the icon/name for next/new disc does not show up in the explorer but instead the name and contents of the previous disc continue to show I have to reboot the computer to view new DVD disc contents in explorer.
3- Even then explorer after displaying new thumbnails comes up with explorer.exe error, memory referenced at ------- etc could not be read.

I have Win XP SP3 with all updates since.
My efforts=
F5 doesn't refresh and System restore didn't help.
Two scans by different antiviruses all clear.
I have cleaned the lens of DVD drive to no effect
Also uninstalled and re-installed the DVD drive from device manager; no good!!!
Registry cleaners- no effect

I have not opened the case of my PC, wires and connections are secure and in past such problem was resolved with re-installation of windows that I wish to avoid. No change of memory modules was ever needed.

Thanks for the help

It first started to happen only in my pictures but now has occurred in my documents or any other folder with pics or videos. If I view files in list view everything is ok but I don't like this view. When my documents open in thumbnail view, it takes only a few second for that "we are sorry for the inconvenience" message to show up and so I press don't send which closes windows explorer. I copied all files in my documents into a external hard drive and the same thing happened.

Is there a corrupt file causing this? is so then how do I find it. I have tried scannow in cmd which didn't work.

Or is the problem with windows xp files?

thanks

Hullo Tech Support Guy forum members!

So I've been having this issue for a while and decided that it's finally time I went and found a solution to fixing it.

A quick search in both these forums and Google in general didn't bring up anything relevant--I may have been using wrong keywords of course--but I figured I'd post here and see if anyone can readily help me out!

Here is the issue (click to view full):

As you can see, in explorer, for some reason, if I have Thumbnails chosen as my file viewing method, the Thumbnail will cover up the file name. This is rather irritating, as might be evidenced by the second screenshot. Obviously, how am I to know which file is which if I can't see the image, nor read its name?

I've attempted fixing it already by going to: "[Personalize] > [Window Color and Appearance] > [Open classic appearance properties for more color options] > [Advanced...] > [Icon Spacing (Vertical)]" and then modifying the value to something greater, but it has no effect at all; doesn't move the icons, nor get them to stop covering each other up.

Anyway, any and all assistance would be terrific, and thank-you for taking a look at this!

PS: This overlap issue occurs in Windows Explorer, [Open], [Save], and other dialog boxes. Pretty much anywhere where there is a Thumbnail viewing mode.

Answer:Windows Explorer, Thumbnails Covering Text

Hi,

See if switching to Classic theme and then back to the original theme helps. If that does not work, follow these steps:

Press WinKey+R to bring up the Run menu.
Type the following command and hit ENTER:

CMD /C REG QUERY "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" |CLIP

The output is copied to the clipboard. Paste the data along with your reply.

Why do my layered .tif files sometimes thumbnail as only one of the layers? Changing the active layers and re-saving does not help. I use Photoshop CS2 as my image editing software. When the same file is saved as a .jpg it thumbnails perfectly.
