Windows Explorer not working: left pane freezes and can't browse files

Question: Windows Explorer not working: left pane freezes and can't browse files

Dear All:

I have been experiencing an annoying issue in Windows (Windows Ultimate 64 bits, Home premium 64 bits and Windows 8 Pro 64 bits) min

After working well for a few minutes, the windows explorer freezes upon launch, only displaying the "favorites", "libraries" and "homegroup" icons in the left pane. The elements in the mentioned icons cannot be accessed and sometimes they have a magnifying glass on them and the icons on the desktop are blank.

Also, Control Panel windows is often empty after this error takes place.

This issue often, but not necessarily, comes about when i try to check the properties of a file, with windows explorer freezing immediately.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice to no avail.

Anyone has ideas on how to fix this? It's rendering my two laptops unusable.
Highly appreciate any useful advice.

Thank you,
Madasco

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer not working: left pane freezes and can't browse files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, the left-hand bar is supposed to represent the desktop, and the contents on it, like in XP. I'd like to make it look more normal.

1. I want to remove: libraries, favorites, homegroup, and network. When you remove them, they just come back. Even if they aren't on the desktop. What gives?

2. I want to add My Documents above My Computer. And have My Computer defaulted to being opened (so I can see my drives.)

3. I would like the Recycling Bin to appear.

4. I would like "Desktop" to be atop the list, as that is how it makes the most sense to me.

Is there a way to re-enact this through Libraries? Or to actually make it happen? Or a different program? What's the deal though, the Windows 7 look is so... illogical and unorganized and cluttered.

Answer:Left-hand bar in Explorer or Browse Files boxes to look like XP.

Folder Options > General tab: Navigation Pane > Check "Show all folders"
Then collapse the parts you do not want to see and close the window.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Can anyone tell me how to get the Left pane back using Regedit ?I always use shortcut Win + E to open Windows Explorer. I edited the Registry to let the mouse pointer open a program by just pointing the arrow at the program icon. However that did not happen. And though I undid that edit. I lost the left pane in Windows Explorer in the bargain. The Windows Explorer displays only the right pane. How do I resurrect the left pane in W Explorer?

Answer:Left pane in Windows Explorer has gone blank

From IE toolbar, click on show favourites, or history if you wish, and the left pane should appear showing whichever you have chosen. j.

If I expand a folder that's down towards the bottom and there's a lot of subfolders, then everything moves up to make room for the subfolder list. That's as it should be. But about the time I go to click on one of the subfolders, the whole list moves down again and you have to scroll back down to get where you want. After that, it stays put. It's an bug/annoyance that I hope someone gets fixed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Answer:Windows Explorer left hand pane

I think the OP is noticing the little quirk in Win 7 where Explore does not bring the left pane target folder (the one with focud) up to the to of the pane, throwing it instead to the bottom of the pane.

A nuisance for sure, but unresolved to my knowledge.

I just reformated my hard drive and reloaded XP Home. The problem I'm having, is that when I open Windows Explorer, (not Internet Explorer) the left pane (tree) does not cascade automatic to show all the folders. It just shows Documents, My Computer and the + sign beside each one to expand to the folders. It used to do this automatically in the past. I've tried all the view options on the tool bars, all property settings and nothing works. I'm running active desktop like I always do. Any ideas?

Thanks, Steve

I have a situation where when using Windows Explorer the left pane that usually contains you main hierarchy is Gray and blank. I have looked at everything thoroughly and cannot figure out how it happened or how to get the information back. If I click on the folder button on the tool bar the whole pane will close and click again and the pane appears but is empty. Has anyone run into this issue using Windows 2000. I did some looking in Microsoft knowledge base but they were talking about Win98 and not Windows 2000 and they were talking about Internet explorer and this is happening in Windows Explorer any help with this would be much appreciated.

I am very new to the PC world, trying to find my way around and running XP. During this learning process I somehow lost the Windows Explorer Default Pane to the Left of the window (it used to show System Tasks/Other Places/Details in separate panels).I can still get Search and Folders by pressing the buttons in the tool bar but when both are de-selected I only have a large window with no sign of the original panel. Please can someone tell me if it is possible to recover this information as I found it very helpful. If so can you also tell me how to do it in simple terms. Many thanks.

Answer:Windows Explorer - Left Hand Default Pane

Open any Explorer window, select Tools from the top of the window, select Folder Options. Under the first heading (Tasks) make sure "Show Common Tasks In Folders" is selected, if not left click it. Click OK.

I just noticed Win Explorer does not refresh the right pane as I navigate up/down a list of folders via arrow keys in the left pane. It used to make rapid visual read of folder contents possible. Can that feature be switched back on?

Not sure if that's possible. Use the up or down button until you have highlighted the one you want. Then press Enter or Space to update the pane to the right. You use the left and right buttons to collapse/expand sub folders.

I find Space the best and fastest option since you use both hands. One to navigate and the other to refresh the right pane.

My problem is how the left window reacts when I select a folder.

If I have a long list of folders in the left window and I click on the small arrow to the left of a folder, it is supposed to show the list of sub-folders that are in the selected folder.

It does but here is my problem. Lets say the folder that I select is in the middle of the left window. When I click on the small arrow, Windows Explorer shifts the folder list down so that the selected folder is near the bottom of the window. Generally I can only see one of the sub-folders. And then I have to use the slider to move the selected folder up so I can see more than one sub-folder.

I wish it would leave the folder where it was and show as many sub-folders as possible underneath the selected folder. I hope this explanation makes sense.

Answer:The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer

I tried it on my Computer and the on clicking the arrow it moves up as it should instead of going down. Please try out the following steps to correct the problem.

1. Restore the folder to default as follows and check if that helped:

a. Open windows explorer
b. Click on Organize
c. Select folder and search option from the list
d. Select General tab, and select “Restore Default”

2. Run an online scanner to check any malware or virus activity. The link that will help you to run a free scan on the computer is Windows Live OneCare

3. If the above steps do not help then run the SFC (System File Checker) scan on the computer to fix the system file errors on the computer. To run SFC scan, follow the steps below:

a. Click Start ,
b. Click All Programs ,
c. Click Accessories , right-click Command Prompt ,
d. And then click Run as administrator.
e. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Continue.
f. At the prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Once the scan is complete, restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Please tell if this was of any use.

This one is getting really annoying. I have noticed that sometimes when using Windows Explorer, if I rename a folder, the right hand pane shows the correct (new) folder name, but the left hand pane still displays the old folder name.

As a matter of fact, even if I right click on the folder name on the left hand pane, and choose "Rename", and then rename it there, when I hit Enter to save the name change, the folder name on the left (that was just highlighted and changed) will revert back to the original name....but the name in the right hand pane will show the change.

For some reason, it just doesn't seem to want to update the view in the left hand pane. And then, to top it off, after some undetermined amount of time, the left hand pane will "refresh" to show the new folder name, but it will STILL show the old folder in the list as well. If I right-click the parent folder and choose "Open in New Window", the view is correct, but the original window still shows the old folder names.

This may only happen after my Explorer windows (I usually have 4 or 5 up) have been open for a long time, as I tried to reproduce with new windows and the behavior is normal (left hand pane updates view immediately).

I've reported it already, but just curious if anyone else has experienced this odd behavior.

Answer:Windows Explorer left-pane not showing changes to folder names

Hi CorrsFan

I think this is just a part of it being a Beta still. I have tried to delete the HomeGroup section, and while it goes for awhile as soon as it refreshes it's back. Just like some sections of the Registry is locked out and some permissions can't be changed, these things will all be sorted out by RC1. Renaming any system item is locked down in the registry and Left (Navigation) Pane items seem to be a part of this lockout.

Make sure to send MS Feedback on this so they know what works and doesn't.

When Windows Explorer is open, if I right-click on anything in the left-pane, Explorer crashes and re-starts.

I've googled, and tried using NirSoft's ShellFix, disabled the most common issues googling resulted in:
#1 Remove Nvidia context-menu and for desktop right-click.
#2 Remove Spybot Search & Destroy context-menu.
#3 Remove Nvidia "nvshext.dll" (not found after using ShellFix)

None of these resulted in a fix at all. I've tried booting in safe mode, the same problem exists. I can right-click on file and folders in the right pane of Explorer, but right-clicking in the left pane, whether folder or drive. Explorer still crashes.

I found a Microsoft page regarding a similar issue, and to be on the safe side, I tried that. Still doing the same thing.

This is really driving me crazy, since I use portable backup drives to re-install my games onto the system but it's pretty hard to drag and drop when you can't have a second Explorer pane open.

Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Explorer.exe Left Pane Folder Tree

I had a look at your problem just after you posted eary this morning. Was not sure that i understood what is going on.Thought you had got your Windows Explorer.exe confused with internet explorer.exe.I also considered you had poss a bad update of IE5 as it appears to only have one choice in the add/remove programs for it.Considered at some stage you may have had a virus, but you don't mention anything about a virus scan or any error messages.I would suggest that your problem is wide spread through-out your pc and i think you have issues with your registry and corrupt files within the windows installation."I could also be very wrong" You could go for a quick re-install of windows 98 over itself and see if that cures the problem. It may give you a chance to keep all software programs that are installed and running properly,if that be the case.If it was me, i would not hesitate to reformat and do a repeat clean install of windows.Unless someone can come up with a better idea.

I can get Windows Explorer to open to a specific folder in the Right Pane, but it only shows the "Computer" or "C:" level in the Left pane. I have tried pinning the folder to "Start", and have also tried various switches (n, e, select) as the target in Explorer.

Attached is an example where a shortcut in Start opens TechInfo in the right panel, but not the left.

Is there any way to open the folder in the left pane also? It's a minor issue, but a pain!

I click on the "+" beside the icon of a drive or folder near the bottom of the left pane of my Windows 7 Explorer. If the list of sub folders that opens is longer than the distance to the bottom of the pane, the lower icons become hidden. Those subfolders extend "below" the pane -- out of view. I want the contents of the pane to shift upward so that all the sub folders of interest are visible -- like on my XP computer and my win98 computer?

Is there a way that I can fix this?

This is something that's been bothering me since I upgraded this Dell XPS8700 to windows 10 some two weeks or more ago.

The left pane in File Explorer seems to duplicate my drive letters and info other than what's under the entry "This PC".

If I look down the list, starting just below the Libraries folder, the drive letters are repeated but not all of them.

Like I have under This PC : C: , DVDRW D:, E:, F: , a card reader, H,L,K, external drives L:, another card reader letter M:, a second external drive N:, followed by some NAS folders I have mapped, V, W, X. and Y.

Down past the Libraries folder are again: H, L, N, M, K, and I, then Network etc, Homegroup etc.

Hard to describe, I could do a screen shot and post it if that would help see it.

How and why are all these drive letters getting into this tree twice? Anyone?

Hi Guys!
Sorry if this was posted already, really busy!

Well this is my problem...i have a couple of pcs with windows xp, and i want to disable the windows explorer view, like explore all users by right clicking on the start menu orb. Or simply as when opening the file explorer, never having the left pane with the file list tree, so that no program can activate this view...

I have older people working in this company and sometimes they just dont let go of the left click on the mouse, making them moving files they are not supposed to.

We use a access database that views its contents (like docs, pics, gifs) always with this left pane with tree listing of all the folders...

I would be gratefull for this solution...

Whenever explorer opens, I can never find the folders I want easily. Therefore, I put them in the Favorites part of the navigation pane. However, still, when I open explorer, the left pane goes somewhere so low down that I can't even see my the favorites folder. Every single time I have to scroll all the way up to the top to find basic things like "Desktop." Is there ANY WAY to be able to always have the favorites bar showing on the left? To never have it disappear, no matter what folder in the tree Windows has opened? This was fine in XP. Its just AWFUL in windows 7. Takes time and is totally frustrating, and there seems to be no way to fix it as far as I have researched? Can anyone help me fix this?

On a side note, which is not nearly as important as my issue above, (because this one frustrated me to the point of no longer caring), is there any way to have the desktop fill up the space of a removed icon, but yet not reorganize the entire screen to where the last organization of your files is totally reorganized the next time you check? I want to be able to save things to the desktop and always have them come up AFTER everything else on the desktop. I want them to stay there, in that order when I shut down the computer, if I move something, I want all the files in front of that thing I moved to move back one space. What I do not want is "holes" in icon locations on my desktop, and I don't want the desktop to be reorganizing itself when I select automat... Read more

Answer:Explorer Left Pane -> Navigate to Favorites Automatically

Go to your navigation pane. Click on favorites. now right click on a blank space in the pane. Select "Expand to current folder".

Once the pane has expanded to favorites, right click again on an empty space in the pane and uncheck the box "Expand to Current Folder". Explorer should now automatically open at that location.

My pc motherboard was replaced a couple of weeks ago and when the engineer reinstalled windows me the left side of the explorer window remained greyed out.(It will show history and favourites, search, etc when selected).Although its only niggly I would prefer to see the folders on the left and the contents of these folders in the right pane.I have tried changing folder options to reflect the other pc I have access to but this has not resolved the problem.I don't want to reinstall windows with my original copy as I beleive it will uninstall all the hours of windows updated that I have done since.Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Explorer not showing me the left hand tree pane

If you are running XP there should be a button labelled "Folders" to the right of the "Search" button at the top of the window (when "viewed as a web page") Click this and the panel should appear with the folders in it.

In Windows Seven if I right click in Explorer left pane Favorites I can then press 'e' to open that folder in a new window. In Vista, I have to press 'o'. Being right handed and wanting to use the mouse, now I have to reach across with my left hand to press the 'o' key.

Is there no way to change the underline/shortcut/accelerator whatever they call it key in the context menu? I see no way to do it. I look in the Registry and I don't see any "&" in front of any of the letters. But the short cut letter is there just the same. There must be a way to change it.

All I've been able to find is turn the display of underline on and off. No info how to change the letter itself.

Answer:Change underline key for Explorer Left Pane context menu?

Just left-click "Open in new window" from the right-click menu. No need to use the keyboard at all for that. Using the mouse buttons is quicker anyway (at least it should be if you already have the mouse under your hand).

After uninstalling MS Works and Office 2007 trial versions from a new computer, I installed the Office 2010 beta.
Now the Win 7 Explorer and Office preview panes do not work for doc or docx files or any other Office extentions, xls...etc. The preview pane in Explorer says "No preview available." In Office the Preview pane says "The file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Word (or Excel or..) previewer."
Zips, jpg, and txt files are fine in Explorer.
Is there a registry fix I can try to fix this?
Thank you.

Answer:Windows 7 Explorer preview pane unable to display office extension files

Did you install 2010 logged in on an administrator account? If not log in as an admin and rerun setup.
If you did run as an administrator use the Control Panel >> All Control Panel Items >> Default Programs option to set the file associations.
Good luck.

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Answer:Windows Explorer: Navigation Pane and Preview Pane Bug

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

It's portable and runs without installation.

Hi there all,

I have been experiencing a problem on my laptop PC. I am attempting to browse and then upload files to my server for a web site but when I browse it seems a certain folder on images it freezes the application. I have tried everything including a "sfc /scannnow"; doing a Disk Scan and scanning a removing spyware.

Could this be software related or maybe a memory leak perhaps. Any solutions or idea would be appreciated.

thanks all.

Answer:Explorer.exe Freezes When I Browse File System

Hello rshillman

Explorer could be having a problem generating the previews (thumbnails) of the images. An image might be corrupted, or it might just be explorer`s fault.

Try turning off thumbnails. This means you will have no previews in any of your folders, but try it and see if it fixes the problem. you can always reverse this later if you want to by rechecking the box.

The thumbs.db file is generated by the Windows operating system. It is a database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder in "thumbnail" view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view). No harm is done by deleting thumbs.db files.

To disable storing the miniatures in a "thumbs.db" file for each folder.....

Click the Start button
Select Control Panel
Select Folder Options
Click the View tab
Check "Do not cache thumbnails"
Click the OK button

Then search on all your harddrives including subdirectories for "thumbs.db" you will receive a complete list of them. Highlight all the "thumbs.db" files and delete them.

Hey,

So I am running Windows Vista 64-Bit, and just recently, whenever I try and browse for a picture to attach to a email or upload to a blog, the browse window freezes, and I have to close internet explorer.

I tried uploading other files, such as music, and that works fine. However, as soon as I click browse, then pictures, and I scroll my cursor over to click on a folder, it freezes. Any advice?

Somehow the left pane with the list of email file folders got moved to the bottom of the page. So the right pane containing the messages is a full screen left to right, and the file folders are way at the bottom only showing the first two folders and then having the scroll bar off to the right.
How do you get the left folder pane back into position with the right message pane next to it.
Once again, the messages pane are on top of the folder pane.
How can I move the folders back where they belong.
Thank you, Dynalady

I currently have things like Favourites, Libraries, and Homegroup (all of which I don't care for). Not sure what that folder pane is actually called, so not sure what to search for.
I just want an expanded folder tree of My Computer.

Any suggestions?

Hi all

Just thought I'd throw this in - not sure if it relates to recent "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607" (Anniversary Upgrade) or the more recent "Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3176936)". However, I haven't noted this particular problem until today.

At one point this evening I suddenly found I wasn't able to delete pdf files - I kept getting the familiar little box saying that I couldn't delete the file, it was open "in another program" or "being used by another program" - something like that.

After a bit of fiddling and fretting I suddenly thought of the Preview Pane in Windows Explorer. I changed it to Details Pane on the View Tab and things returned to normal.

Anyone else had this or am I on my own? Anyhoo, I pass it on.

I am not sure if I can describe this well.
When I drag and drop in Win7 to copy files I have two windows open. Each has two panes. The left is a hierarchical navigation pane and the right is pretty standard XP style. When I grab a folder and hesitate over the place I need to drop the file it pops open. Good stuff!
But the pane moves the files all over and next thing I am hovering over another folder which, if I am lucky, I notice and I hold off dropping. The next folder pops open relocating things yet again.
Is there a way to stop the file pop open from moving the files? Holding the folder position and dropping down its contents would be fine, but moving up from where I am hovering is a problem as I am now about to drop the file in the wrong place.

This is repeatable by opening two file windows, dragging the file to be moved to a fairly deep folder for its destination. A few things have to happen - left side pane used for your drop, left side window full (scroll bar showing), destination folder near bottom. When your destination folder is reached will pop open moving the destination folder up when its contents are shown and you can easily drop into a sub folder by accident.

I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

This one is weird and occurs on every computer I've tried. I have a dvd with files that I am copying to my harddrive (.vob). The first time I copy them everything is fine. However, when I try it again with a different DVD (same type of files) Explorer freezes up, becomes unresponsive, and/or tells me the files cannot be accessed. I've done this with 4 different computers. They all allow the copying of the files one time and then have the same failures from that point on. I've restarted the computers. I've shut them all the way down. I've created new accounts and tried it. All to no avail.

Also, when I right click start & choose Explorer, the same thing happens. I have checked for viruses, etc...I'm not finding anything. Any ideas?

I have received an e-mail response from the creator of Windows Double Explorer / Windows Dual Pane Explorer (names seem to be interchangeable) . My apologies for not knowing the proper terms, but I hope anyone will be able to understand what I’m about to describe.

According to information provided by the creator of WDE / WDPE one uninstalls the program by doing the following:

Navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. There you should find a shortcut file (look for a file not a folder) named Windows Dual Pane Explorer. Select that shortcut file, options click and writedown the target path of the shortcut. Delete the shortcut. Navigate to the location the target path dictates. There you should find both a zipped and an unzipped folder of WDE / WDPE. Delete the folders and also any other shortcut files to WDE / WDPE that you may have created and you’re done.

Apparently WDE / WDPE is never actually installed. Instead WDE/WDPE initially downloads a folder named WDE Portable 0.3.7.0 zipped. When this download folder is launched it unzips another folder named WDE Portable 0.3.7.0 unzipped into the same directory. During the unzipping process a shortcut is created on the desktop that points back to the unzipped folder. Thusly WDE/WDPE never gets listed into Windows Control Panel’s Program Files & Features section. That’s why it can’t be uninstalled as one might ordinarily expe... Read more

I have had this problem for a while but I have just ignored, but now that I am moving around a lot of files it is getting very annoying.

The problem: I am running windows vista 32 bit on a dell inspirion 531. When I try to move or delete files in windows explorer the screen that pops up to show the progress freezes. The file is moved or deleted successfully but the pop up remains. I can then cancel the pop up but the cancel screen also remains. I have to open up task manager to close windows explorer. This problem happens in spurts, sometimes all files do this and sometimes no files do this but it is always all of them or none of them.

This problem first presented itself a couple of months ago so I have no idea what the last piece of software was installed.
I believe I am up to date on all windows updates, including service pack 1, this problem came before service pack 1 was installed.
Is this a common problem with Vista?
I will be happy to provide anymore information that is needed.
thanks in advance for all of the help.

Hi. So, recently I was having problems with browsing through folders in My Computer, as well as browsing to attach files in programs such as Skype or different email clients. Whatever program I was in would freeze, and crash. Windows Explorer would do the same. However, I posted a HijackThis log in the proper forum, and did a whole bunch of scans and updates, and my system turned up clean for any viruses or malware. I updated my Vista to the Service Pack 2, and that seemed to fix my attaching files in programs problem, but I still am unable to browse my files by going to Start > My Computer. I was wondering what might have caused this problem, and what I might be able to do to fix it. Here is a link to my previous thread where I was directed to come here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/287364/infected-with-something-not-quite-sure/If anyone could help, you would be awesome. This has been happening for at least two months, and I don't really recall if I made any major changes that might have caused this, but I doubt it. If I need to clarify anything, just tell me. Thanks!

Hi, I've been having this problem for a while now. I don't know when it started/what caused it tohugh

When I double click mp3-files Winamp doesn't react. However, the single window freezes. I can open and use another window while the other is frozen, which means explorer.exe doesn't crash totally...

This is not true for .avi files or .doc files though. I seriously am at a loss here.

It might have something to do with the problems I've been having with Opera for a long time. Every 3 minutes or so the browser freezes for 5-10 seconds and then goes back to function normally. But it also has total crashes regularly. I've tried reinstalling Opera (deleting it and then doing a new install) but somehow the application setup is still there when I've reinstalled it (favourites, personal bar, etc.)

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows Explorer shell freezes when double clicking files

Hi Norwegian and welcome to TSF !

Do you have that problem with all files you double-click or only with certain file types ? If it's only with mp3-files then uninstall/reinstall winamp.

Do you have SP2 and all the latest critical updates from Windows update ?

Are there any process in the task manager (press ctrl+alt+del and go to the processes tab) that are taking some cpu usage when this happens ?

Go to the device manager : start => run => devmgmt.msc. Check "show hidden devices" in the view tab and tell us whether there's any device with a warning sign next to its name.

Run the event viewer : start => run => eventvwr.msc. Search the different sections for errors and report about what you find.

How much free space do you have on your drives ? Have you defragmented them recently ? Go to start => Run and type chkdsk x: /F /R (replace x with the drive's volume letter), answer no when it asks to unmount the volume then yes to scan the drive at startup and reboot the computer. Do this for all your local drives.

What are your computer specs ? See the link in my sig about posting system specs. Enter the BIOS at startup (repeatedly press del or search for a message telling you which key to press to enter setup) and search for a harware monitor or pc health screen. Report what your cpu temp, fan speed and voltages are.

Hi there, this is my first post as I'm pretty new. I really hope you guys can help me sort this out, as I've searched everywhere for a solution and I'm really starting to panic, as I have no clue about this sort of thing.Ok so a couple of days ago I was just browsing the internet, on msn etc. as you do when this fake virus scan popped up, along with a cmd window. I noticed system32 in the cmd window and a message popped up saying something along the lines of 'do you want to enable antivirus software?'. I tried clicking no because I thought it was fake, the blue screen popped up and my laptop proceeded to turn itself off.I got worried when I turned it back on, and the same thing popped up as soon as I logged on: Fake scan -> Blue screen -> restart. So I managed to boot it up in safe mode. Now my subscription to Windows Live OneCare had run out, but usually it quarantines threats for me as and when I get them. For whatever reason, it would not let me run this in safe mode. NB - at this point I still had a task bar, could still browse files and programs from the start menu and using explorer. So, I thought to myself I would try and System Restore, as this usually resolves problems. I tried running System Restore but kept getting error messages saying that it had been disabled by group policy. I then proceeded to search the internet for a solution. As my version of Vista is home edition, it did not have a group policy editor, so I had to use the Registry... Read more

Is it possible to have no Nav Pane when opening a Desktop folder, but have Nav Pane when opening Win Explorer? Like it was in WinXp/Win98/Win95?
When I disable Nav Pane, it disappears for Desktop folders and Windows Explorer.

I think the answer was 'no' for Win7.

I installed Classic Start Menu hoping one of it's features could do it. If it does, I've not been able to enable it. Other than that, Classic Start Menu is a super improvement.

Answer:Windows explorer navigation pane

It can take a while to load everything on various machines, depending on hardware and configuration.

If you don't want it to load all folders, ( which takes time);

Navigation Pane - Automatically expand to current folder[2]=File%20Folder%20Settings

there are other tutorials there on this and similar matters.

By the way, that window is known as the "Explorer Navigation Pane", "Sidebar" refers to something else.

Answer:Blank Windows Explorer Pane

Hello Justin,

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

You could try a restore point to a time before the problem started. Info here if needed. System Restore

You could also do a system file check (sfc). Info here: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

[Not sure question in right Forum.] Problem is with Win95 and when I right clik on something in My Computer to bring up Explore menu option, and then left clik on left side of window to display contents to the right, I am not able to get the right pane with the contents listed as always have.
Nothing comes up. I dragged the window from the right but the right pane was not hidden there. I get info in the bar above Start bar showing how many Objects and how much disk space is used and free. I've Re-started computer a couple of times to no avail. Never had this problem before.

Am running ME and after an updating session with ms found that WExp had changed. I no longer get the two panes just a singe one similar to opening a window in My Computer.Consequently, if I wish to move files around I have to open two WExp in order to drag and drop from one folder to another.I also get an error sometimes and WExp will not run properly until the system is restarted.

In Windows 2000, in the File Explorer, I can go View->Explorer Bar->Folders and the left side of the screen shows folders whilst the right side of the screen shows what's in those folders.I can also go Tools->Folder Options->View->Like Current Folder. This should record my preference to show the folders on the left always, whenever I open File Explorer.Problem:- that doesn't happen. If I open "My Documents" it uses the default view. Likewise if I set up a shortcut to a folder, it uses the default view. Can I change something in the registry so that the default view always has the folders on the left? Please help.

Answer:File Explorer, how do I get folders always on left and files on right?

I'm using XP so this might be different. That particular option cannot be remembered by the OS from what I can tell. I just tried it here on XP and it didn't remember that for me.

On my laptop with XP-PRO SP2 installed I can rename a file or folder in both the left and right explorer panes by slowly left clicking twice on the file or folder name (not the icon). I really like not having to right click and select rename from the context menu. However, I am unable to rename files and folders in the left explorer pane on either of my two desktop PCs, one with XP-PRO SP2 installed, the other with XP-PRO SP3 installed. Is there a Registry modification or a setting somewhere I could change on my two desktops to allow me to rename in the left pane by clicking the name twice. I am comfortable making Registry modifications and I am careful to make backups of the Registry keys and values before changing them. I have searched the internet using Google but have been unable to find the answer. I would greatly appreciate any information on this subject. Thanks.

Answer:Renaming by two clicks in Left Pane

Just to give my thoughts ---I find that such things annoying. My guess is that such things may be related to whatever the Double Click Speed settings are, in Mouse Properties.

I'm a 5 day Win 8 new-bee leaning new stuff every day.
The latest thing to have me stumped is the Navigation Pane in explorer.
I don't want them all to look the same. I have folders on my desktop, in which all I want to see is the short cuts to apps. I went into View/Navigation Pane, and deselected Navigation Pane. I got the look I wanted, but it applied to all folders that I opened. Whenever I click on Windows Explorer, the Navigation pane was missing. If I restored it, it again applied to all folders. I am NOT clicking on Apply to All Folders in View/Options. So why can't I get what I want?

Answer:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane - What am I doing wrong?

Hello Jeff, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In File Explorer (renamed Windows Explorer), the navigation pane turn on or off setting is a universal setting for all folders and libraries windows. It can't be turned on or off for some and not others.

It was this way in Vista and Windows 7 as well.

I have just installed Windows 2000 server on a Dell Poweredge 2450, when entering windows explorer the lft pane is grayed out. I am running IE6 and have removed all security patches for windows to no avail.

Please Help !

Answer:[Resolved] Windows Explorer pane grayed out

Welcome to TSG, tthulen.

Run regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}

With that key highlighted, click File (or Registry) > Export, name and save the key to the desktop.

With the .reg file on the desktop, Right click on it and rename it with a .txt extension

Now upload it here as an attachement so we can see what is there. There is a possible fix for this, but it may vary somewhat in Win2k

I am wanting to to the folders into links like in XP so that by clicking the name of the folder it will expand. Windows 7 seems to have gone to a little triangle symbol next to the name for this purpose, but it is annoying spending time trying to hit that small symbol. Is there any way to make the listings into links? Thanks.

Answer:Windows 7 Explorer Navigation pane Question

Hello nakedbamboo,

Welcome to 7 Forums.

Try a double click to expand folders.

Hope this helps.
