Windows XP 'hidden song' found on Windows 7 desktop

Question: Windows XP 'hidden song' found on Windows 7 desktop

Hello, today when booted up my pc found an WMA file with title '$291Ae3' (without quotes), I played it and it's the Windows XP Welcome Song! I was wondering how did I get it instantly on my desktop? (Note that it's hidden file) I have no Windows XP, no virtualization, etc... My Windows 7 is original too. How did I get it then? I have no viruses too. I'm adding an attachment right now to prove it. If you want, I can add the song too.

P.S: I didn't download it either... Just found it on desktop!

Preferred Solution: Windows XP 'hidden song' found on Windows 7 desktop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes anyway just to be sure.

I have been using the Zune Desktop on Windows 7, then Windows 8, then Windows 8.1 - fresh installs every time.
I am grand-fathered into my "Music" account, so the 10 mp3 monthly song credits have been working great... until yesterday.
I installed Windows 10 (fresh install) and after installing the Zune Desktop app, I am no longer getting the 10 mp3 monthly song credits.
I can still download songs, just not the "mp3" versions using the 10 song credits.
Can anyone still get the 10 mp3 monthly song credits in a fresh install of Windows 10 and Zune desktop?
Or does anyone if this was an explicit decision by Microsoft?

Answer:Zune Desktop app on Windows 10 - Song Credits?

I installed Zune Desktop on Windows 10 and today I got my 10 mp3 monthly song credits.
Make sure you wait until your anniversary day, and the credits do show up.

Here are some system files that I found in the "C:\Windows\System32" directory:
"SlideToShutDown.exe" - There were lots of compaints from people who couldn't figure out how to shutdown/restart there computer using Windows 8. From the name alone, it sounds like this might be a new way to shutdown your computer using touch. Maybe holding the power button like you would do with a Windows Phone, and then sliding the screen down to confirm the shutdown?
"phoneactivate.exe" - No idea what this could be, but this file doesn't exist in the current Windows 8 system. This file is new in Windows 8.1 and the name suggest it has something to do with phone integration. What the word "activate" implies is left unanswered.
Edit: Looked into the file's code. This file actually has to do with how the Windows 8.1 license is activated by telephone. My guess is that this helps fix some of the telephone exploits people were using to activate illegal copies of Windows 8. :)
"EmbeddedAppLauncher.exe" - Not too sure about this one. Might have to dig into the actual code this file contains, but it could potentially be related to the "Kiosk Mode" that will restrict the operating system to running one single app.
"EscSetup.exe" - "ESC" is an acronym for "Enterprise Client Sync". The icon for this file is the same as Skydrive. This is without a doubt the business version of Skydrive for business users. Businesses will be able to have their own private file storage which will make it easier to share and s... Read more

I'm at a bit of a loss for how to properly describe this, but I'm hoping an XP guru will be able to sort out my desktop woes.

Essentially, my desktop (icons and background) is hidden if I bring any window into the foreground. Almost as if my desktop wasn't really a desktop, but a window that self-minimizes as soon as it's not the active window.

When this happens, the start menu bar remains.
If I right click on the bar, and choose "show desktop", my desktop will be restored, that is, until I open a window, or restore a minimized application.

The screen will just be blue, and will not respond to right clicking.
If I close a window, the start bar will also vanish, but I can get it back temporarily by pressing the windows key.

It's almost like I have an "always on top" application of solid blue forcing it's way on top of everything all the time.

Now, when this happens:
The explorer.exe task is still alive.
I have checked "show desktop icons".

Any ideas?

In a Dell notebook, o/s Windows 8.1, from an icon in the Desktop or in the Quick Access area IE opens behind the Desktop. The tabs for MSN and another user specific opening page can be seen above the Desktop window. I could not find a way to alter this strange behaviour or find its cause.

The laptop is new and has displayed this problem previously and returned to normal behaviour without input from the owner/user. I was assisting the him when the problem recurred after a restart following the installation of TeamViewer and Malwarebytes AntiMalware.

In the process of trying to manually remove malware from the Temperary Internet folder there was a folder that was hidden while navigating to the temp internet files folder. I knew this folder was there so I removed the hidden attribute. Not only have I not been able to remove the malware I now have two files on the desktop with the same first name and I assume a different extension. How do I make these files hidden again? Can I simply delete them and will Windows Vista re-create them as hidden files/folders the next time it re-boots?

I have a lot of experience using Windows XP but none using Vista.

If I remembered which directory I removed the hidden attribute from while navigating to the temp internet files folder I would simply make it hidden again and Believe this would fix this problem. I do not want to do too much experimenting with this because I don't know if it will make the system unstable.

Has anybody had a similar problem?

Answer:Windows Vista hidden files appearing on desktop

Looks like it is the same as XP except you only have access to Folder Options in Control Panel. Here is a link for showing the files but you would tick "Do not show hidden" and also tick "Hide system files" rather than clear the circles.

The path to temp internet files is "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files" I don't know which folders are hidden on Vista but AppData is probably the highest on the list. *but hiding AppData shouldn't change your Desktop attributes so I would go with Control Panel>Folder Options.

Well my computer was hijacked by a virus with the Windows Recovery popups. I've run several virus removals, and seen files removed such as ultra defragger, windows recovery, etc. The virus has hidden my files, and I've noticed in windows explorer a fake drive called memory_card on 'Npie99fc4' (Z:). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The "Windows Recovery" virus is plagueing my computer. It has hidden my desktop icons, and files/folders on my disk drive. I have attempted to run Malwarebytes and SmitFraud Fix, but the virus will not allow it. I have also run RKill prior to starting the anti virus programs, but they still cannot run. I have run SUPERAnti Spyware, which finds a couple of issues, but it will not remove the virus. I am running Windows XP Professional. Please help.

My netbook running the Windows 7 Starter operating system appears to have been infected by a virus. Yesterday I was online when it started to bring up continuous messages asking I wanted to allow an unknown program to make changes to my computer. I kept clicking 'No' but the messages kept coming up. I managed to delete my temporary internet files, since I thought this was where the problem was coming from, and restarted my computer. When I logged on again, the desktop was completely black with no icons, and my Start menu was missing programs. The My Documents folder and all of my files had disappeared. System Restore appeared to have been disabled. I ran a MalwareBytes full scan which found nothing, since Microsoft Security Essentials appeared already to have removed a Trojan called Win32/FakeSysdef and a couple of other files.

So my computer now appears to be clear of the files causing the virus. I managed to unhide the missing files, but the desktop background is still black and my Start Menu is still completely different. I can't access folders such as My Pictures through Windows Explorer because 'access is denied'. Worse, although Security Essentials doesn't show anything in the scan and has removed everything that can be removed (another Win32/FakeSysdef appears to quarantined on the computer, though I can't remove it), it keeps detecting new potential threats. I can't work out if the virus has been removed and if my private information ... Read more

When I check the properties on it it simply says that is is just a Remote Desktop Connection type and it was created August 24th, 2008.

Hi all,

Can anybody please help me with this one. I see a lot of computers lately with the same type of malware infection. I am able to remove the infection with Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Hitman Pro and MBAM; however, the changes do not revert back. All computers are either Windows Vista or Windows 7. All of the computers have the following symptoms before and after the clean-up: Black background screen which cannot be changed via Personalize option, hidden desktop and user files, hidden or white quick launch icons, disabled system restore.

Is this a new type of infection? I haven't seen this type of infection before. Is there a good solution guide for removing this malware and reverting back the changes?

Answer:Malware Signs: Black Background - Hidden Desktop Icons - Hidden User Files

I had this infection yesterday. I used the procedure for "Windows XP Recovery" removal, which first requires the use of a program called rkill, before using Malwarer Bytes. This sounds exactly like what happened to me. Look on this site for Windows XP Recovery removal for the link to rkill and this will probably work for you.

My windows media player for XP doesn't always recognise when I have moved my downloaded songs to a new folder. In other words, all of my songs are in one folder, but the media player thinks that some are in that folder, and that others are in other folders that the song was once stored in. How do I get media player to keep up with these location changes.

Answer:Windows Media PLayer-Song Location

Add them to your playlist:

Click Media Library, and then click the item that you want to add to a playlist.

Click Add to playlist, and then from the drop-down menu, do one of the following:

Click the playlist you want to add items to.

Click Additional Playlists, click the playlist that you want to add items to, and then click OK.

Repeat steps 1–2 to add as many items to the playlist as you want.

Note: You can also add items to a playlist by dragging files in Media Library or from My Computer, or you can right-click a file, click Add to Playlist, select the playlist, and then click OK.

You can add items to a playlist as long as they are listed in Media Library. If the item that you want to add to a playlist is not in Media Library, you must add it to Media Library before you can add it to a playlist.

Is the song from the same source as the others? it may be a codec related issue - if you don't have the required codecs installed it won't play.

I have a nokia 920 and I use Bluetooth in my car that pulls the data from my phone. The data is saved locally to the phone. (usually loads song name and artist)
I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 on my phone. Since then only about half my music data shows on my Bluetooth. I have tried using other music apps. I have tried comparing ID3 tags to the ones that do work and see no difference. I've tried removing songs and readding them.
I installed a tag editor and removed the tags and recreated them. The data still will not load on the Bluetooth. I am not going to reset back to defaults to fix this because this is my third issue with this device that would have caused me to do that. Anyone got anything that has worked to get the info to load in the Bluetooth? It's only some files doing it and I can find no correlation between ones that do allow it and ones that do not. I've even reripped some from cd's without any luck.

Answer:Why does only some song data sync over Bluetooth on Windows phone 8.1?

Is it possible that the music which is skipped is DRM protected music?
Below text is part of the below linked article.
Audio or video files that are DRM protected cannot be properly shared via Bluetooth connection. The files may be transferred and even stored in a phones xBox Music hub, but you wont be able to play them on the phone since the DRM protection on the file is not transferrable to a phone via Bluetooth sharing and the DRM protection will prevent the files from being played on the phone. DRM-related protections cannot be transferred or circumvented when sharing files via Bluetooth connection.

(2) While playing the song, clicked 'download' at the left corner of Amazon Cloud Player
(3) Save it to 'Music Library'
(4) there is one song downloaded from Amazon Cloud, but NOT my favorite song I attempted to download to WMC.
There is a wrong song, NOT my purchased and intended song is Windows Media Center.

My question is:
How to download a purchased song to WMC/Win 7 successfully?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:Unable to download a song to Windows Media Center/Win 7

you don't download to media center
you download to a suitable folder on youir computer & add that folder to the music library that media center looks in to play songs

if you bought & paid for the song, look in my music for the song
it is quite possible that teh song is in a format that WMC doesn't recognize & you need to use an alternative player like windows media player to play it

Does Any One Know How To Fade The Song From The End Of One Track To The Next One? For When I Write Them To CD?

Answer:[SOLVED] Song Fading In Windows Media Player

Hi Jay

That depends on the burning program used and it would be best to use an Audio Editor for this that can also burn CDs. They will have options for effects and editing such as Fade In and Fade Out, as well as many other. Such as this one:

I've don't use any of the commercial software offerings anymore (though I used Audio Editor Deluxe not long ago for a similar reason), the ones we use are very proprietary and professional and so I can't comment further.

I cut music for dance studios. Quite often, I need to make CDs for the kids to practice to. I like to have their song at different speeds on the CD so they can learn. But I have to manually make different versions of the same song at different speeds. (it's not difficult... I just wanna automate it)

I'm looking for software where you can give it one file... and it will create different files at different speeds. Sorta like batch processing... but I've only found software that can take a bunch of songs and process them all the same. I want the opposite.

I want to take one song... and create the different speeds from it.

I use Adobe Audition... and it does have batch processing. But it's got the same problem. You can only apply one script to many different files... not different scripts to one file.

Any ideas?

Answer:Software to change speed of a song... one song to different speeds?

You could use a for loop in a batch file in conjunction with ffmpeg to do what you want.

Here's an example (haven't tested to see if it works):

for /F %%A IN ('dir /b *.wav') DO (
ffmpeg -i %%A -ar 48000 %%~nA.48000.wav
ffmpeg -i %%A -ar 44100 %%~nA.44100.wav
ffmpeg -i %%A -ar 32000 %%~nA.32000.wav
ffmpeg -i %%A -ar 22050 %%~nA.22050.wav
I'm not sure if that would make ffmpeg resample the audio or just change the speed (which is what I'm hoping for) but it's worth a shot. You'll have to find a Win32 ffmpeg binary though..

Hello Larry, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like you had selected all of the files when you renamed it causing them all to be renamed.

Right click on an empty area instead the Music folder to see if you may have a Undo Rename option to click on. You can also press Ctrl+Z for this.

Hello, I am having some issues with Windows Media Player, and I am not sure how to fix it. The behavior I am experiencing is that WIMP would start playing a song (from the library or a CD) and after playing a few seconds of the second WPM would skip to the next song. There is no consistency on the amount of seconds that play before WIMP skips to the next song. I cannot find any option from the options menu that would cause this to happen. This started happening when I first opened WIMP. This is really strange. Any idea of what might be going on? I would use another Player, but I don't want to go through the hassle that other players (though very good) bring with compatibility with synchronizing with mobile devices, playlists, etc... So I am forced to use WIMP. I need this problem to be fixed though. It seems that it is happening with all players and with all of my music files. I can play the music files on my desktop just fine. Thanks

My friend has MSN Messenger 7.5, with the Messenger Plus 3 add-on. She used to be able to display the song she's listening to as a personal message, but she can't anymore. The "display song information from Windows Media Player as a personal message" box in her settings is still enabled and there is no known reason to this problem. She already updated and reinstalled both MSN and Windows Media, and she even reformatted her hard drive, but the problem has not been solved.

She uses Windows Media Player 10 to listen to music, under Windows XP SP2. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Edit: By the way, she has trouble with her sound card drivers. Could that be the problem? She can listen to music just fine, though.

Answer:Solved: MSN Messenger: Song information from Windows Media not displaying

Update: She installed Messenger 8, and the problem is still the same.

This has been going on for sometime lately however, my Windows Media Player and ITunes will only record part of my burn list. Usually about 4 tunes out of 8-10 will be recorded and all the others will be left off. I can't imagine what the problem is. Also, I cannot listen to CD's or watch DVD's because they both skip and sound as if they were playing under water. Once I rip the music it plays fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Windows Media/ITunes only record part of song list

I'm having the same problem. Burning onto a cd with media player - it'll burn the first few songs, then finalize the disc. Sometimes it's 2 songs, sometimes it's 3 or 4. Then I'll get a message telling me that the disc is not empty, try burning at a slower speed (I have!). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the dvd burner and removed nero for now. Any thoughts out there?

After moving all the songs I want on my phone from iTunes to the Windows Phone App, for some reason almost all of them have incorrect names when viewed in the app and in my phone music library (as in "Eiffel 65- Blue (Da Ba Dee).mp3" instead of just "Blue (Da Ba Dee)"). It's not a major thing, but it really bothers me and I'd like to fix it.
So, is there a way that I can change the song names? (and one artist name, but I can live with that)
Thank you very much!

Use Tag editor. It allows u to edit all details of the song including name, artist, album, release year and even the album art.

I've doing a lot of tests and I currently give up and just want a straight answer. On my phone it's "Song.mp3" while on iTunes or on my folders it would just say "Song". There are a few songs that do say "Song" but my OCD is kicking in and I need that ".mp3" out!

Answer:How do I change a song title on my Lumia 635 from showing as "Song.mp3" to "Song"?

This way I could import them to WMP if something goes wrong. I'm not talking about my songs as I have them backed up already. I'm also not talking about the Playlists folder. I'm asking if I can backup the music lists that show in the Music folder that shows the Artist, Album, Genre categories in it, which is listed under the Playlists folder.

The reason I'm asking is because when I have transferred my backed up songs from my old pc's to new one's then WMP finds them automatically and lists them differently than how I had them where it takes me a long time to manually sort the lists and move each song into the lists where I want them. I do not want the auto find function disabled since it would take me much longer to add all of my music to WMP manually than to sort out the misplaced songs.

I'm hoping there's a way to save my customized WMP Music folder lists that are currently on my pc where I could either import them into WMP on this pc if something went wrong, or import them into WMP on my next pc so I won't have to do all of this manual song swapping to other WMP music lists.

Answer:Can I backup Windows Media Player12 song lists in the Music folder?

After much searching I found that there is a program that will backup and restore WMP music libraries so you will not lose all your info and customized listings of music in WMP. It's very simple and easy to use. So I came here to answer my own question in case it may help someone else here.

If I use the search function in Media Player with the library contents on screen, I receive the message 'there are no matching items in this view'. A few hours ago while I was playing an online game and watching Netflix, Microsoft Security Essentials popped up saying that it was taking care of detected threats and that no further action was necessary. Twenty minutes after that, I got a cascade of windows across my screen (12-15, at least) saying the same message: 'System Error. Hard disk failure detected'. Then my desktop background disappeared. Then my desktop icons. Then my start menu items systematically vanished. I ran a full scan with an updated Microsoft Security Essentials, it picked up nothing. I immediately rebooted into Safe mode with Networking and repeated the scan. Still nothing. I downloaded Malwarebytes and TDSSKiller after Googling the error message and getting an idea of what it was, except TDSSKiller came up clean, as did Malwarebytes. I rebooted into normal mode again and again got the cascade of fake error messages. Went back into Safe Mode, ran all three scans again. Still nothing. I was thoroughly confused at this point and figured I would just do a system restore. I realized that every link in my start menu had been moved elsewhere. I located the temp folder they were in, accessed system restore through that, and.. nothing. I choose a date, click the Next button, and nothing happens. I have adminstrator access. Argh. Help, please, before I tear my hair out. Thank you.

The computer crashed hard. I was running an application call Stylizer, a visual css editor. One of the tasks it allows you to do is switch between several browsers to see how a web page may render differently. When I clicked on a form select element while in IE 7.0, it crashed. This is a repeatable bug that I have encountered before(don't click forms select again ya dummy). Anyways, all the applications that were running died and the computer froze requiring a hard reboot. When the computer returned, the desktop wallpaper image was zoomed. Obviously something became corrupted with the crash. I can't find a solution how to unzoom the wallpaper image. I tried a number of display and accessibility options without any luck(screen resolution, DPI, large icons, centered, stretched, etc.). I did notice if I changed from my usual "hide desktop icons", to "show desktop icons", the wallpaper image is then displayed correctly. I can also kill the explorer.exe process and the wallpaper will show correctly. If I run File>New Task(Run...)>explorer.exe again, it reverts back to the zoomed wallpaper. I tried a restore point from the day before. Wiped display drivers and installed the latest. Switched the dvi cable to a different output on the card. I uninstalled Stylizer, all it's files and registy entries. I've run sfc /scannow. I also tried rolling back to SP2 and back again to SP3 to re-install explorer.exe. Still zoomed. I've run out of ... So my lenovo (somehow) got a Windows genuine problems, which is (probably) an impossible things that my Windows isn't genuine, since my dad bought it at Lenovo dealer in here. There's no significant problem since that 'genuine issue' comes, but today, I suddenly got a new pop up windows named "GrandPrix Hidden Windows" that couldn't be close at all, even I'm using Windows Task Manager help.Right then, a sudden strange pop up apps windows also appears. Like, Daemon Tools, AVG Scan, and any other apps that was active in my system tray. The problem is, I DIDN'T EVEN CLICK ON THEM at all...And when I try to close it manually by clicking the 'x' button in each windows, my lenovo become slower. So I did close those 'pop up' with Task Manager, and there's only one 'pop up' that couldn't be close at all, it's the GrandPrix Hidden Windows Pop Up, and two other 'strange' pop up windows. And also, my Chrome suddenly opening 3 new tab, which I couldn't even open at all..Is it a virus or malware that has infected my lenovo? and how can I solve this? Please help me fix this. Any helping suggestion or instruction will be much appreciated!

Answer:a GrandPrix Hidden Windows and a sudden app windows pop up

"Is it a virus or malware that has infected my lenovo?"Lets find out.1: Download & run Unhide introduction as to what this program does. those of you who no longer have the %Temp%\Smtmp folder, you will not be able to use Unhide to restore your Start Menu items. With this in mind, I have created some scripts to restore the default Start Menu for specific versions of Windows that I have access to. You can view the available versions below. I will be adding more as time goes on.Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run, it does take some time, be patient. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run. When Unhide is complete, it will create a logfile on the Windows Desktop called Unhide.txt. Let me know if it dosn't produce a log please.2: Reboot 3: Run TDSSKiller & post the contents of the log.

I ran combofix since i've used it numerous times before, but without a script this time. It never showed its logs, but it deleted the infected files. In conclusion I have hidden files all across my system now, my program shortcuts aren't in the start menu, except remote desktop connection.. AVG Free 2012 found 53 rootkits that are listed as "Object is hidden" and it warns me they could actually be legit files.
The files mentioned in the scan results are hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe, ACPI.sys, fltmgr.sys, Ntfs.sys, tcpip.sys, and win32k.sys.

TDSSKiller doesn't find anything when I scan with it, and I'm afraid I'll break everything if I tell AVG to go ahead and remove them.

I'm on Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64.

Answer:AVG found Hidden Rootkits

Not all hidden components detected by anti-rootkit (ARK)/anti-virus scanners and security tools are malicious. It is normal for a Firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware software, CD Emulators sandboxes, virtual machines and Host based Intrusion Prevention Systems (HIPS) to exhibit rootkit-like behavior or hook into the OS kernal/SSDT (System Service Descriptor Table) in order to protect your system. SSDT is a table that stores addresses of functions that are used by Windows. Whenever a function is called, Windows looks in this table to find the address for it. Both legitimate programs and rootkits can hook into and alter this table. API Kernel hooks are not always bad since some system monitoring software and security tools use them as well. If no hooks are active on a system it means that all system services are handled by ntoskrnl.exe which is a base component of Windows operating systems and the process used in the boot-up cycle of a computer. ARK scanners do not differentiate between what is good and what is bad...they only report what is found. Therefore, even on a clean system some hidden essential components may be detected when performing a scan to check for the presence of rootkits. As such, you should not be alarmed if you see any hidden entries created by legitimate programs after performing a scan.If you are using a CD Emulator (Daemon Tools, Alchohol 120%, Astroburn, AnyDVD, etc) be aware that they use rootkit-like techniques techniques to hide from other applicat... Question: Found Hidden Files

I recently downloaded the free version of toolwiz from CNET. It has a function called super explorer that allows you to find and view hijacked or hidden files on your drives. It has shown me several in red.
They are as follows:
A folder named
which contains the following files:
Then there are other files listed under the C: as so:
If anybody knows what these are and if they are malware, help me figure out how to remove them.

The program you a self-styled "optimizer". As such, I suggest that you uninstall it and cease to use it or assume that it will do anything of consequence that will be beneficial to your system.Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons: Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad... Read more

So I ran AVG this morning and it found a "hidden application" that was high severity and was "idle", whatever that means. I went ahead and removed it and did a little research online. A quick google search is showing a ton of people having this issue and it is more than likely a false positive. Please tell me if I am wrong on that assumption.
Also, when I looked at the report, it said the file was "part of the operating system". This has me pretty worried because I deleted it. Did I potentially delete something that my operating system needs to run properly? At this point is there anything I need to do past this to protect and or fix my computer? Thanks ahead of time for the help.
I should mention that I was running Malware Bytes at the same time and it found nothing. Also, the virus vault in AVG was empty so i have no way of checked for a file path or anything.

Core i7
8GB ram
1TB Hdd
NVidia GT620 video
Windows 8.1
Malware bytes (paid subscription)
Windows Defender
It was running very slow.  10 min or longer to log in, 2-5 min to open anything.  I disconnected it from internet and ran defender and Malwarebytes.  Seems to be working better.  I went to defrag the HDD ( I only have the one) when I found this. (Photo attached)
Is this normal?  if not how do I fix?  Any help would be appreciated.  Right now I have it disconnected from the network still.
Thank you.

Answer:Hidden hdd found in Defragger

I tried Defraggler and I can't find that screen.  Could you describe where it is?
My similar screen doesn't have Status in the upper left, and there's much more info than just Drive and Media Type in the opening screen.
Are you using the latest version?
It may help if you include a screenshot of diskmgmt.msc
Type "diskmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) into the Run dialog and press Enter.
Maximize the window and take a screenshot of that (Alt and PrtScn)
I suspect that it's a hidden partition  My hard drive has 6 partitions - only one of which has a drive letter (C:).

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I can't seem to find a solution.

Basically, I have a dual-boot system with WinVista and Ubuntu. I resized the Windows partition, and all the files exist and are accessible from Ubuntu. However when I try to boot, it gives me an error along the lines of "autochk not found - skipping AUTOCHECK", then reboots, and the whole process happens again.

The Windows partition is C: to Windows, /dev/sda4 to Ubuntu and (hd0,3) to GRUB.

I have tried:

From the GRUB menu, going into the command line and typing 'unhide (hd0,3)'; it completed successfully, but did not help.
Booting from the Vista setup disk, and choosing the repair option. It did say it had fixed a problem with the startup, but this did not solve the issue.
Opening the command prompt from the Windows setup disk and running chkdisk /f C:. Nothing of any note, except a few unindexed files.
Typing find /media/sda4 -iname "autochk.exe" from Ubuntu. This confirmed that the autochk.exe file did exist.
Doing a ClamTK virus scan from Ubuntu. The only real result was:
//media/sda4/pagefile.sys: Exploit.Shellcode.X86-Gen-1 FOUNDClick to expand...

Not sure if this is relevant or how to get rid of it.

Any other ideas of what I could try?

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Edit: I can also confirm that the Windows partition has the boot flag on.

Ah. Your note about "Hidden Devices" in Device Manager shows my Nvidia with Code 45 - This device is currently not connected to the computer.
Seems the GPU needs to get reballed or replaced/reballed.
Anyone know of any good shops in the Bay Area for such work?

Answer:Found my NVidia GPU in Hidden Devices

I would delete the device driver, power down, attach a monitor cable to the graphics card and see if Windoze detects the device.

So I guess my wife was downloading something and ended up infecting my laptop.
Ran Malwarebye, Adware, CCleaner and HitmanPro and removed the maleware. Went into Safe Mode did the same thing found nothing. I then Ran Gmer and found out there is a rootkit through my firefox maintenance log (hidden). Tried to scan using Gmer and it keeps crashing probably cause of the rootkit. Been scrambling all night now trying to fix this and I gave up and now seeking help.
Currently running ESET to see if it will find anything. So far I know I can't open my Window Defender and there is a group policy being placed and I cannot turn off that group policy. Tried going to a safe restore point and still can't get rid of it. Was about to do a clean installation using the MSI software but I figured I would ask here first and try to remove the rootkit before I go ahead and do a clean install to prevent any lingering crap I don't want.
So far this is my current log off dds

HitMan found "possible TDL3 variant ..blah blah..device stack hidden driver..."
I discovered that Disk Management Extention did not show the physical disk.
I found the MBR was changed. did an MRBFix / BootFix from XP disk and than found a hidden 31 meg partition (reading about this virus led me to look for it).
After MBR fix - Hitman - ZERO
AVAST - Dumb as always...
BUT...2 days later the virus rewrote the MBR again.
So this time after I restored the MBR than I ran "diskpart" from XP disk and deleted/recreated and formatted the 31 meg partition. (because something was keeping me from accessing it in Windows).
How do I know if its really gone and not hidden in some printspool or something..
Quick learner...needs guidance.

Answer:Found hidden TDL3 partition

There are many hidden and system protected object on Windows PCs. This can be quite normal. A HijackThis log is of zero use to us. A log from Avira would be much more useful so that we can see exactly what was found but I suspect that they may just be normal system files.

I forgot what I was doing at the time but, I came across a file that had thousands of thumbnails of pics from variuos websites that I had visited at one time or another. Now, I can't remember how to find them or even how I would delete them. I run a cache cleaner religiously. I use Vista Home.

Answer:Found hidden pics; need to delete

Hello UltraFast, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This may be the "Temporary Internet Files" cache that you looked in.
The tutorial below can show you how to empty it by deleting it.

Another a good program for this is CCleaner.

Hello all!

I ran an anti-rootkit scan (I use AVG anti-virus free edition 2011) two days ago and was told that a rootkit has been found. It was put in the 'not removed or healed section'. Under the heading 'Infection' it says 'Hidden directory' and under the heading 'Result' it says 'Object hidden'.

I followed the instructions given in the thread I posted here:

There are a few things you should know before I posted my logs. Firstly, I skipped the backup as I didn't have the option to back up my whole computer. I hope this isn't too much of a problem. Secondly, I had a bit of trouble with the 'gmer' part. After I'd downloaded gmer, when I tried to double click on the gmer.exe file to open it it flashed to a blue(ish) screen that said, among lots of jargon, that a threat had been detected and it must shut my computer down immediately to prevent damage to the machine. My laptop rebooted automatically. When it had restarted, I was told that 'Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown'. I was given the option to look for a solution online but I clicked cancel, and tried the 'gmer' part over again.

This time, the gmer scan started to run, but after a few minutes an 'AVG Identity Protection' box flashed up, saying 'Malware detected' and giving me 2 options, either to 'Move to Vault'... Read more

Hello all,
Here's something i've not run into before, this in on a newer computer, purhcased in the
last 6 months, and I came back to my computer, seemed to be asleep even though I have
sleep and hibernation disabled, and I had to force my computer off, after no response from
several efforts.
Then Windows 8.1 won't start, and the automated repairs don't succeed.
When windows was trying to start, it states something about the drive being locked, and
so I looked into those errors, but they didn't seem to apply to me.
Then I booted to the command prompt, get to the C: Drive, and I look at the directory and
it seems to be missing a number of folder such as Windows, and Program Files, as well as
the users directory is missing my primary user name.
Then I look into the found.000 folder, where CHKDSK keeps it's recovered and orphaned
data and I Found over 50GB of data!
I've never seen this before, i've had crashed drives, garbled data, corrupt data, etc..etc..
but I've never found a significant amount of data, in this folder, and clearly this is where
my windows, user profile, program files, and personal data has gone.
The folder has yesterday's date and time stamp around the time I encountered this problem.
What's the best approach to work with this, besides wipe and restore?
I'm more curious than anything and clearly if I can somehow recover this, return it to
working order, vs. wipe and restore, it'd be really appreci... Read more

An AVG anti-virus scan recently showed my computer was infected with "Trojan horse Generic 18.CJW.dropper". SuperAnti-spyware seemed to get rid of it, but subsequent scans showed that it was still there (?). I want to make sure it's gone.

I went through the entire process described in the "READ AND RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide" sticky. I ran AVG, Superantispyware, Combofix, RootRepeal and MGTools. The AVG and SuperAntispyware logs didn't show any infection. I don't understand the Combofix log, or the MGTools log, so I don't know what they are trying to tell me. The RootRepeal log says "Scan found hidden/locked files!" What do I do now?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

So I ran a Full Computer Scan with my AVG 8.5, and it found a hidden driver by the name of ajaxorbeg.SYS. When I attempted to remove/heal the rootkit, AVG said the access was denied and I was unable to remove it. I'm not very good at this so could someone give me a step by step of what I need to do to remove it? Thank you.

I decided to do an full scan with Avira-Antivirus since I haven't done it in a while. I usually leave all scanning for Malwarebytes. The scan came up clean, but it found 6 hidden objects. It didn't alert them as anything malicious but I have this paranoid feeling. Google wasn't especially helpful, Some they are safe, some say they are rootkits. Wanted to get an professional opinion, so here I am.

Hello JaskaTheK9 and welcome to Bleeping Computer.Thereis no sign of infection in your logs.I notice that you have run RogueKiller and Junkware Removat Tool. Although Junkware Removal Tool is harmless, running and then “fixing” results found in Rogue Killer can cause problems if you don’t understand the results fully, so I would advise against it.Many files are “hidden” for various reasons but they would have been flagged by Avira if they were suspicious and unless you have reason to think that your computer is infected, they can be ignored.Satchfan

I scan with Avira regularly and the scan reports always show a number of hidden objects but no warnings or infections so I just ignored them. Yesterday I came across a website contains an ad that looks like a fake/rouge antivirus. I closed the Window with task manager and didn?t click anything in the ad. When I scanned with Avira after the ?scanning for hidden objects? stage it showed 69 hidden objects and the scanner would stop and prompted a message that said something like ?some hidden objects may contain viruses or unwanted programs, please boot with Avira rescue CD to analyze and repair the problems.? Spybot scan turned up 3 entries (I didn?t write them down) which it was able to fix. Later Malwarebytes quick scan turned up nothing, but scanning with Avira again still was interrupted with the hidden objects message. I booted with the Avira rescue CD and scanned the system by following the steps here: "". The scan turned up nothing. But when I rebooted to windows and scanned with Avira again it still gave me the hidden objects message. I then rebooted to safe mode and scanned with spybot, Malwarebytes (full scan), and Avira under the admin account. All 3 turned up nothing and Avira scan was able to go through and no infections and no hidden objects were found this time. Rebooted back to normal user account and Avira scan showed no infections and no hidden objects now, but when it?s scanning I not... Read more

I run a system scan once a week with Avira. This week it threw up a hidden object when it did the 'Hidden objects search'. I'm pretty sure it found just one hidden object, then it advised me to restart my system and scan again, and it found 2 hidden items on the 2nd scan.

I'm attaching the logfile to my post. Anybody have any suggestions on how to proceed?

First off, I'm going to be honest, I've already asked for help on another forum BUT they found nothing and said my HJL was clean. The topic there should be closed. And I already posted this on the web browsing issues section because when the other forum said my computer was clean, I figured it had to be an error on my laptop, I got no replies so I've asked for that topic to be closed. As crazy as it might sound, I know that there's something affecting my computer. This is the jist of what I posted on the other section: "A few days ago I noticed that some of webpages weren't loading correctly. It was shortly after updating Java. Web pages that I visited like Yahoo, Adobe, and Facebook started to load plain text (no graphics of any sort). The Microsoft site wouldn't load at all until I read instructions somewhere on this forum about enabling secure sites. Most other sites loaded perfectly so I figured it had to be some sort of malware that was blocking me from certain sites. I ran a lot of scans using several anti-malware and anti-virus programs. I ended up finding about 3 trojans that were removed. That didn't solved my problem though. I got fed up and decided to reformat my computer hoping that whatever was wrong with it would get fixed, it didn't. Since I formatted my computer I tried updating Windows but I kept getting an error: "WindowsUpdate_8024402C". Wouldn't work in Normal mode even after I followed the instructions g... Read more

I just purchased Norton System Works 2006 and was attempting to install it over the 2005 version. Norton recognized the older version and was going to uninstall it before installing the 2006 version.

I received some error message toward the end of the install that there was an error in the install. Without rebooting I tried to uninstall the 2005 version but was unable since there was an incomplete install or some such nonsense. Anyhow, I gave it a ctrl, alt, del. Now I cannot get back into Windows just the blue screen of death... with the message that the autochk program is not found. I did some searching on the internet, and found a person with a similar problem. It was suggested to him that he use PTEDIT to fix his problem.

I downloaded this program and put it on a floppy but my computer will not boot from it. I typed G:Windows >a: then I typed a:/ptedit/ptedit.exe etc. etc. I also tried the Windows XP Recovery Console. I tried FIXMBR/fixboot both with no success. I would like to try the PTEDIT program but I cant get it going.

The computer cycles over and over and each time I get the message that the autochk program is not found. I believe it has to do with:

"If the computer is rebooting then most likely the NTFS partition has been configured as a "hidden NTFS" partition, which is 0x17 (hex) or 23 (decimal) in the "partition type" field of the partition table. XP seems to treat this in the following manner: if the part... Read more

I usually do daily or weekly checkup scans, but yesterday avira found 27 hidden objects. I used ccleaner then rebooted in safe mode with networking, after scanning with avira, malware bytes, and super anti-spyware the results were clean. Today I did another scan with avira and it was also clean, should I be worried about those hidden objects? Logs are attached.

Answer:Avira 10 free found 27 hidden objects

Bump please. Avira only detects these objects when I choose to scan the drive for "active rootkits and malware" as an administrator. If scanned under normal profile, everything is clean. My laptop is also running normally without slowdowns, so I guess I'm okay.

Well... I thought I was secure, lol...

My router has a built in firewall, furthermore I've got the adware, spybot, NAV, spywareblaster and Sygate firewall on my system... however, it has come to my attention that there is some hack activity going on within my system... namely within:
The folder is very well hidden... given that I already display all hidden folders on my system, I am only able to access this entering the path in the explorer address bar

There is a FireDaemon.exe within this folder, and a SVCHOST.EXE file within this folder... needless to say the scans do not turn these up... so my question is what am I to do!!??

I need to secure my system...

Answer:Can I change the Windows 10 desktop back to Windows 7 desktop but keep the rest of Win 10?

WARNING: that's only a style facade: Windows will continue working as 10 (Settings, Notices, etc)

desktop shortcut has disappeared. opened settings > system > apps & features. found the application listed. tried to drag to desktop or click to open or move but the only thing that happened was an uninstall option was shown. went to start bar, opened "all apps" and scrolled though listings but the application was not listed.
took the laptop to the local Geek Squad. they could not access the app either. they downloaded the app again. it showed under "apps & features" but not in "all apps". they were stumped and said they would do some research, the tech said he was familiar with windows 10
the two most important applications that can't be accessed are Garmin Express and Netgear's push2tv . other than this issue windows 10 appears to be operating fine
