The icon shows in taskbar as "unknown icon"

Question: The icon shows in taskbar as "unknown icon"

Hi!
I have just re-installed my OS. After I installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 64 bit, I pinned it in my taskbar. The icon of the desktop shortcut looks good, but in the taskbar, this is how it looks:

How could I solve this problem?

Preferred Solution: The icon shows in taskbar as "unknown icon"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: The icon shows in taskbar as "unknown icon"

Hello barbu110 and welcome to Seven Forums.

It's possible that your icon cache became damaged or corrupt for some unknown reason. You could try rebuilding it and see what happens.

Wish I had a better title, but I wasn't sure how to word this.

Basically what's happening is I have 2 instances of Firefox (different versions and different folder locations) and one of the instances is not opening where it's icon location is.

Example Screenshot:
As you can see. The far left instance does not want to open where it's icon location is.
The far right version always does it.
Even if I unpin the currently working instance (blue/orange icon) to only house 1 firefox instance (grey/black), the grey/black instance will still not open like the blue/orange instance current does (in it's own icon).
Hopefully this isn't confusing for anyone. I searched for a few terms to see if anyone had this problem and nothing came up, maybe I wasn't wording my searches correctly.

Hopefully someone can give some insights.
Thanks.

A while ago, ALL my htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer changed to white paper icons with the corners turned town.

I do not have this problem with any other icons--just htm and html.
I do not have this problem with other file managers, such as XYplorer or Shelless.

The problem is only htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,

I move files from anywhere to the recycle bin (clicking delete or dragging,) but the icon does not change. If I right-click the icon, "Empty Recycle Bin" is grayed out. Clicking "Refresh" does nothing.

Here's the odd part: opening the bin/folder or deleting files with the folder open will change the icon in the way that it should.

Emptying the bin changes back to the "empty" iicon as it should.

Answer:[SOLVED] "Full" Recycle Bin icon shows as empty

Hi, go to start, search and type:- cmd, right click on the returned, cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt type:-

Code:

Hello,

whenever I'm connected to a network, the attached icon is displayed. The other icons (e.g. the spinning wheel thing when establishing a connection) do work, but the "connected" icon seems to have disappeared for no reason. I did not install any new software and I don't know what else might have triggered this, it was just that way when I booted my pc a few days ago.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Network connection icon always shows "not connected" even though I am

You might have a two adapters enabled. Right click on the bars and open the network and sharing center. Then in the left pane click on change adapter settings and see if there are 2 adapters present. If so disable the one that isn't wireless..I don't know if the two are related but mine used to look like this the left pic now it looks like the right pic. And it happened right after some windows updates.

Well, whenever i set the icon to represent files with the extension .pwn, it lasts for minutes or maybe hours, but it resets itself after some time..It's annoying, as the file extension is actually known, and therefore should have an icon i can recognizeI have tried to manually recreate the file extension and it's associations, however that does not solve the problem, it just works for a few hours..If i just open Tools -> Folder Options -> File types (dunno if that's their real names in english, but it should be similar) and alter the extension's icon from there, it works for like 30 mins, then it's resetAny way to solve it?

Answer:Icon for *.pwn files resets to "unknown" while keeping the file associations

Quoteit lasts for minutes or maybe hours, but it resets itself after some time..Do you log off or restart during that time period? It is possible that malware is resetting the file associations? it occasionally will do that.

I use third party software to update and do other system functions so I don't need the Action Center icon nex to the clock, how do I get rid of it?

Answer:Remove the "action center" icon from the taskbar area near the clock?

The notification area is located on the right side of the taskbar by default, and it contains program icons that provide status and notifications about things like incoming e‑mail, updates, and network connectivity. When you install a new program, you can sometimes add an icon for that program to the notification area.

You can expand the notification area to view hidden icons

New computers often come with icons already in the notification area, and some programs automatically add an icon to the notification area during installation. You can change which icons and notifications appear in the notification area, and for certain special icons (called system icons), you can choose whether they show up at all.

You can change the order of the icons in the notification area, and the order of hidden icons, by dragging them to the position you want.

To remove or hide an icon from the notification area
Click the icon in the notification area and then drag it toward the desktop.

For some reason, Adobe Acrobat Pro, PowerPoint, and QuickTime all have the default Windows "unknown" icon next to them on my Start Menu (and also on the taskbar if I open the program.) I got a really bad virus that spread all over my computer and installed 2 toolbars one was called "Security ToolBar" which i uninstalled without any problems. The other was "Toolbar 88" i tried to uninstall it but it still appeared on my IE so i Disabled it from the addons. The other thing that came up was a flashing icon on my taskbar that says "Critical System Errors" and it links to virusbursters.com and norton began to detect all sorts of trojan and spyware tools so i switched to Safemode and ran my Norton AntiVirus -after updating it- and removed everything it detected, but it when i ran my windows in normal mode Norton found more trojans and they were trying to connect. I read a few thread here and there and i tried to follow the steps.. i used "SmitfraudFix" and this is the Log:

One thing Win10 left out is on the right-click and Properties of a Taskbar shortcut, can't change things. For File Explorer I first Unpinned it from the Taskbar then I opened File Explorer, right-clicked This PC and chose Send to which allowed creating a new shortcut on the Desktop which gives a generic icon. Then I right-clicked it and Properties then Change icon to choose a different one. Then I dragged the shortcut to the Taskbar. I do have one small program that doesn't have to be installed to run and haven't been able to do the same with it, not a 'biggie'.

Hi Guys,

I have Firefox pinned to my taskbar, but when I run the program, it opens up another icon in the taskbar to indicate that it's running. The other browser I use does not do that. In fact, I do not remember Firefox doing that previously. It will just "underscores" the pinned icon on the taskbar to indicate that the program is running.

How do I stop Firefox from opening another icon when it runs? Please see image below:

The arrow suddenly disappeared & everything became different & i don't know why. How do I get it back?

Recently ran into major problem with Word 2000 SR-1.

Whenever I work on -- or try to -- on a .doc file, at the bottom of the screen in the taskbar that lists the page number, line, column, there is a small "book" icon with a pen, and as this pen moves across the book, I cannot edit the text, and the blinking cursor disappears until it ( the pen & book) *finally* decides to quit doing whatever its doing.

It has sat there and "wrote" for over 20 minutes before stopping. I can save and exit a .doc file, but just as soon as I reload it, and type anything, the "pen" starts writing.

What can I do to turn this annoyance off? Until its fixed I cannot use Word2K.

Answer:Word2K Taskbar "Book" icon -- Major Problem

That icon is for grammar and spelling. Under the Tools menu click on Options and then Grammar and Spelling to view your settings. Maybe if you play with those settings you will figure out a way to edit your document. Hopefully I've pointed you in the direction you need to go but I don't know what the solution is.

Hi All,
After the recent 'Anniversary Update', I noticed that several things have either gone missing, or need to be re-set.
The first thing I noticed was that the icon for "Search", (the little magnifying glass icon), is missing from my taskbar.
How do I get it back?
The next issues are regarding 'Default' programs that I chose when I set everything up after the upgrade from 8.1 to 10.
One example is Microsoft decided to use Groove Music, thereby replacing MY default selection of Windows Media Player!
When I noticed that change, I knew that I should make sure my other settings were OK, but they also changed my choice for 'Maps' from my choice of Bing & replaced it with 'Maps.Windows'.
There are also several other additions to the Start Menu that weren't there before, so I decided that I should do the setup we all had to do before using 10 for the 1st time, but when I clicked on "Let's get Started", it's all about the Anniversary Upgrade!
How do I get to the original preference settings so I can make sure Microsoft didn't change anything else, especially the Privacy/Security settings?
I know for a fact that I disabled 'Error Reporting', but if I open something that doesn't work correctly, I get that message box with the green status bar stating that "Windows is searching for a solution"!
I've tried using the "Settings" thing, but it doesn't get me to the settings I'm concerned about, & when I went to "Control Panel&q... Read more

1. the icon for "Search", (the little magnifying glass icon), is missing from my taskbar.
I'm not familiar with that on the taskbar, sorry. What did it do?
Do you mean rt click taskbar, click Show Cortana icon? (That's a circle).

2. Default programs.
I didn't find any changes in default programs when I did the upgrade.
However, you can always reset them. You can search the Tutorial section for 'default'. I've done it for you.

The other day, I tried to send an email. Naturally, I was quite surprised when Windows XP Pro told me "Not enough memory". I rebooted the computer. Upon booting it back up, I found that my taskbar was locked, and in the lowest possible position (nothing visible on it). I did not set it this way. I unlocked the taskbar, but I still could not move it up. I also noticed that the "My Computer" Icon was no longer on my desktop. Upon opening task manager, i found that one of my SVChost.exe processes was taking up 99% of my computer's resources. Note that this is not a fake SVChost.exe, nor a non-essential one, as windows shut itself down when I ended its task. I booted the computer up in safe mode, and all three of the same problems were there. I was still able to open folders on my desktop so i managed to navigate to and use several diagnostic tools, including Adaware, Spybot, McAfee Virusscan 8, Stinger, and the FixWelchia and FixBlaster tools (all of which took an incredibly long time with SVChost slowing everything down). None of these found anything, except for Virusscan, which found a minor trojan, which I easily deleted. The problem persists, and the fact that it seems to have tried to stop me from accessing anything by removing "My Computer" and locking my taskbar leads me to suspect that some sort of virus is causing this. If so, it must be very new or very elusive to evade Virusscan and Stinger, both of which I updated a little over a we... Read more

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
In your next post, please make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order:

CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

A couple of weeks ago, I installed the software for a HP DeskJet 5940 photo printer that I purchased. Afterwards, a "Safely remove hardware" icon appeared in the taskbar.

None of the startup entries for the new printer are running in the background, so I don't know how to get rid of it.

I've tried following these instructions:

1. Right-click within the notification area, and then click Properties.

2. On the Taskbar tab, click Customize.

3. Select Safely remove hardware, and in the Behavior column, click Always hide.

but when I right-click on the icon, the only thing that appears is "Safely remove hardware".

I've gone into the taskbar properties and tried to do it that way, but it wants to hide all inactive icons, which is not what I want to do.

Any suggestions?

So I've been having A LOT of trouble with my computer recently but much of it has seemed to sort itself out. HOWEVER I have been having an issue with "Win Defrag". It appeared on my desktop and ever since that I've been getting a "Windows Security Alert" red cross icon in my task manager. I know they're related as when I double click on the icon Win Defrag opens. Whenever the icon is on my task manager My Documents disappear to be replaced with an empty "Programs" folder.
When I use Rkill the icon disappear and My Documents come back but I'm sure it's still there --> I've used MBAM countles times and it keeps finding and deleting things, I've also tried Stopzilla and Dr. Webb along with just my McAffee. They seem to find more things every time.

You know, the small icon that appears in your taskbar when connecting a USB device? It no longer shows up, so now I have to go to Windows Explorer and click "Eject" directly on the USB device. How can I have this icon re-appear?

It's the one that let's you select your USB device to "Safely remove device".

happened to me quite a few times on my laptop ...

if it is not just 'hidden', try this

Start, Run, paste this line and click OK:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

This will bring up the add remove wizard. When I did this, it actually put the icon back in my task bar as soon as I removed my USB drive.

I'm setting up a new Windows 8 PC. In my Win7 PC, I have an icon on the taskbar that holds all open folders. I'll call it the "Open Folders" icon. I don't remember how that icon got on Win7's taskbar. How can I create a similar icon on Win8's taskbar.

EXPLANATION:
In Win7, say I open the C: drive and click on "Program Files". Then I minimize that window. The "C:\Program Files" folder minimizes to the "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.

Then say I open drive D: and click on a folder named "Photos". Then I minimize that window. The "D:\Photos" folder minimizes to the same "Open Folders" icon on Win7's taskbar.

Now if I hover over the "Open Folders" icon on the taskbar, links to the Program Files folder and the Photos folder pop up. I can click the desired folder to open it.

How can I create a similar "Open Folders" icon on Win8's taskbar?

Thanks,
Skyzoomer

Answer:How to pin an "open folders" icon to Win8's taskbar?

Hi Skyzoomer,

it's very easy to do what you want. Here are the instructions.

Go to START and click on the arrow in the lower left part of the screen. Now you can see all the different installed programs etc. Scroll to the right and under the header "System" you can find an icon that says "Windows Explorer".
Rightclick on this icon and choose "Pin to taskbar".

Et voila! If you go to the desktopmodus you can see the pinned icon for Windows Explorer. Any explorer windows you open will be grouped 'in' this icon.

Hope this was helpfull.

Some time over the last few weeks I lost the Speaker Volume control icon on my Taskbar (Normally on the right side near the digital clock). I don't know what I did to make it leave, but I was looking for it just the other day and realized it was gone! I went into my Control Panel to access the audio sliders, and when I checked the box to display the volume control icon on the Taskbar, a text box popped up telling me that I have to install it from my add/remove programs function. Well, I can not find the Volume Control icon function anywhere, including on my original Windows XP Professional installation CD. Can anyone tell me how I can re-install the speaker Volume Control icon on my Taskbar?

I'm a new Win 8.1 user trying to setup a more normal looking desktop on my wife's new laptop.

In an attempt to populate the desktop toolbar with apps on the start page, I found it can't be done as explained in the tutorial. Either when I touch/hold the app icon, or right mouse click, the app is checked and the bottom application bar appears. However, on the app bar my only choices are: "Unpin from Start", "Uninstall", or "Find in Start". I'm not given the option of "Pin to taskbar". I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.

I'm running this account in admin mode. The most recent Windows update was 5/2014, with no new updates available when checked today. Is there something wrong or a control panel setting I need to enable to see the other choices?

Your help will be appreciated. Thanks! -Matt

I am running Windows XP. I have noticed a small icon that I cannot interact with except to move it. It does not respond to a right mouse button click and I am afraid to start pushing keyboard buttons because with my luck I'd make things worse. I am able to move it around my desktop but that's it. I first noticed it a few days ago hiding in the upper left coner of my desktop by the recycle bin. When I change backgrounds the "icon" seems to get stuck where it's at and I cannot interact with it at all (like it's a part of the background). When it is stuck I can pull files over it and a prohibited sign appears (circle with a line through it). It also changes color when it gets stuck. I would like to show you a picture but I will include that only if you need to see what I am talking about.

I have added a picture of a portion of my desktop with the "icon" in the green box.

I should correct myself and say that I can pull files over it and get the prohibited sign whether it's stuck or not.

To me, it seems to be a tiny window since it looks very similar to a sliver from a title bar on XP.

I need help getting to the bottom of this, not sure why it's happening, or when it started happening, maybe a week ago...

I get a seemingly random icon flash on the taskbar for no more than a few miliseconds, so i checked
event viewer to track down what was happening and the only thing i can find is 2 events in the subcategory
Application that states the source as RestartManager
and the event ID as 10000 and 10001, these both appear every time the icon flashes on the taskbar

I think this issue is also causing fullscreen flash vids to show the taskbar and a loading circle on the cursor... also Battlefield 4 likes to get a black screen then when i alt-tab i'm back to the game without any crashing or any error besides this ominous
black screen

I'm running 8.1 legit

This is the easiest way to get rid of the icon. You can right-click on the date/time in Taskbar system tray and select "Customize notification icons" option. It'll open a new window. Now look for GWX (Get Windows 10) entry in the list and change its value to "Hide icon and notifications" using the drop-down box.

Apply the changes and it'll hide the White Windows flag icon in Taskbar notification area.

Apply the changes and it'll hide the White Windows flag icon in Taskbar notification area.

If you want to get rid of It you need to uninstall update KB3035583 as that is the main part of the GWX Upgrade process. You may hide the notification for a while but the application is still running and the notification will return. There are other ways to disable the function through Task Scheduler but uninstalling KB3035583 takes care of most everything. It also depends on what your intentions are re: upgrading to W10. If you don't want W10 right away then you should get rid of it and if you have a reservation in you won't have much wriggle room when your number is up.

1.Get the WMP icon in your desktop. (start > all programs > right click on wmp icon in programs list > send to > desktop.)

2. Right click on it > properties >change icon > browse (to the icon you want)

3. Open wmp , now the icon is in taskbar. Right click > pin the program to taskbar

You are done.

My internet works fine, but I can't figure out why the red "x" is over my internet access. (I've uploaded a pic of the toolbar area) It doesn't show how many bars I have unless I click it. I use Windows 7 and this is a brand new laptop. Any ideas on how to get it to go away?

I'd appreciate it.

Answer:Red "x" over the internet access icon in taskbar

Hi Millie0513,

I'm guessing your laptop has a Wireless and a Wired network card (who hasn't these days? :)) Anywho, it might be showing that one of your network cards is not connected to anything, thus giving a misleading image of the Network view.

Are you able to connect to a network if you click it?

Could you please do the following:
Go to Start > Search.
Type "cmd" without the quotes > Hit ENTER.
Type in "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt" > Hit ENTER.

A logfile with your network cards/settings should've been saved to C:\ipconfig.txt. Attach this file to your next post.

WinXP (SP2)...

This may seem trivial to others, but:

I have several icons on the right side of my tray. I right-clicked on the taskbar and clicked "Properties". "Hide inactive icons" is checked. I clicked "Customize" and set certain icons to "Always show", "Always hide", or "Hide when inactive". In particular, I set the APC PowerChute icon to "Always hide". However, each time I re-boot the computer, it ALWAYS defaults to "Always show" and keeps showing in the tray. The other icons keep their settings.

Now...
Is there a registry setting where I can change that behaviour to "Always hide"?

Just got through the manual CU update on my machine, and now there's an icon for the "Windows Defender Security Center" in the taskbar that won't go away - It isn't listed in the "system icons" list where turning off Action Center and such was possible previously.

Has anyone figured out a way to disable it? It's a minor detail, but it IS an eyesore to me.

Answer:Getting rid of the CU "Security Center" taskbar icon?

Disabling it in Task Manager still works.

Each time I receive an email in my Gmail Inbox, I have set up a visual and sound advice to let me know, which suits me perfectly. But all of a sudden, I am now also getting an advice in my "New Notifications" window on the taskbar, advising me of these new emails. As I say, the advice via my Gmail program is perfectly adequate, so can anyone tell me how to prevent the same advice arriving as a new notification on my taskbar?

Recently my battery icon disappeared on my taskbar and in its place is a blank spot. When I turned the power icon display off and back on, the space went away and reappeared. I turned my Wifi icon display off and back on and where the wifi icon once appeared, the battery icon displayed and a blank space appeared next to it where the wifi icon would be displayed. I've included two screenshots to show my issue: Is there anything else I can do other than a system restore to a previous version? I feel as though ever since my warranty ran out (literally two days after) I've had nothing but annoyances with this computer and have had to do too many system restores. Thanks.

The "no icon" icon is that icon that shows while the system is booting up, smaller than other 'normal' desktop shortcut icons. It is then replaced with the 'official' icon for that shortcut..

After removing some malware that prevented access to the internet, I found that all my desktop shortcut icons are now overlaid with that "no icon" icon.
If I drag a new shortcut icon off windows explorer, as soon as I release the mouse drag - that "no icon" icon immediately over lays the original icon.
They still work, but is untidy and makes the original icon unreadable.

I created a new user, and upon logging that user on, all IT'S desktop shortcut icons are also over laid.

What to do?

I right clicked on the Taskbar and checked Quick Launch and hit the Apply button. This put the Quick Launch toolbar on the Taskbar with the Show Desktop and Internet Explorer icons. I deleted them and now I can't duplicate this action. I can get the Internet Explorer icon back. But I can't get the Show Desktop icon back.

Does anyone know how to get the Show Desktop icon back on the Quick Launch toolbar.

So after the most recent Windows 10 update, my sound started acting up. At first, the front headphone jack didn't even work anymore. I reinstalled my Creative Sound Blaster Z driver and it started working again.

However, another problem persists. After a system restart, the speaker icon in the system tray has a red "x" next to it. When I mouse over it, it says "The audio service is not running". When I click the speaker icon, it searches for problems and then my sound magically starts working and the red x disappears.

It seems to be fine after this, but, the problem re-occurs whenever I restart my computer. I've already checked the two Windows audio services that people say to make sure are set to "automatic" (mine already were).

Where do I go from here? This is really annoying.

Hello,
I got this problem today. Normally when right clicking on the "explorer" icon it shows shortcuts of folders that I added as well as frequently visited folders.
But now it shows nothing but two options: "Windows explorer" and "detach the program".
I tried to move new folders in but nothing was changed.
Please, what is my problem? How could I solve it?
Thank you!

Answer:"Frequent" and "attached" disappear from Explorer Icon

Problem solved!

Jump Lists - Reset and Clear All Items

Delete everything in these two folders:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations

And then you can make new shortcuts as you want!

Okay... I've read several responses to the "PSGuard" variant of this virus/trojan/spyware, and tried all those solutions. Nothing seems to work. This think is kicking my butt... basically... I don't think it's actually doing anything. I've removed several Trojans that 'were' infecting my computer which is where this stupid little icon came from:

... but the icon remains. That was screen-cap'd in SAFE MODE with nothing on. I'll post two HiJackThis logs. The first one is from safe mode... the second is the one of my currently running system.

Answer:Red "(!)" Icon - "Your computer is infected!" (WorldAntiSpy)

-=PROBLEM SOLVED=-

Okay... my system was clean. But, the icon roots itself in the %system%\system32\wininet.dll file, so... I went into the windows recovery console, and copied over a fresh one from the %system%\ServicePackInformation\I386 folder and poof... icon gone.

Then when I rebooted, I had a nice little windows update waiting for me.

If you'd like, I can attach the infected dll file (renamed wininet.old 643k) or e-mail it somewhere for analyzation purposes.

Thanks for all your help!!!

I need to always display the default audio input and audio output device currently on win7.
Would like to launch a small program on change as well or instead.
I tried to use task scheduler but was not able.
Help!
Thanks,
Ray

Answer:need "always on top icon & msg for "default audio input/output device"

Do a search on this forum. I think someone found a program to basically do what you want.

However, I just created a shortcut on my desktop to the Sound Panel/Playback section where you can change default playback devices. Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound. RIGHT Click on "Sound" and then click to create a shortcut.

The audio input is another issue. If you set the default Recording device to the Stereo Mix then whatever input is used will be heard. In recording programs, select the Stereo Mix as the input and then whatever input device/port is used will be recorded. e.g. Mic, Line In, etc. Also, the Stereo Mix is needed if you want to record audio from the Internet or sites such as youtube.

Hello. My computer recently (less than a day ago) started to display User Account Control prompts whenever I deleted or copied that weren't in the "Users" folder, such as the Program Files folder. I am using an Administrator account, and the User Account Control is set to notify when programs make changes to Windows but without dimming my desktop. Whenever I try to delete any type of file not in the Users folder, the User Account Control prompt pops up like in the attachment. I believe there is something wrong with the "File Operation" program, because I'd imagine it would be signed by Microsoft and would automatically be elevated to Admin status so the prompt shouldn't show in the first place. Clicking on "Change when these notifications appear" doesn't do anything, but I am able to copy/delete files after clicking "yes".

I'd really appreciate help, because it's getting annoying getting this prompt whenever I want to delete or copy a file, and this prompt never appeared before when I was just deleting a file until a day ago. I'm using Windows 7. I'm just using a Windows 8 RP theme. Also, I don't want to disable UAC, since it lowers security.

I feel perhaps something happened to that certain registry key or keys related to it. But I'm not sure.

EDIT: I figured out that something was wrong with shell32.dll, so I replaced it with an unmodified copy of the file from another computer and the prompt doesn't come up anymore.

Win7, latest version of Media Player. I have a ton of music that all of a sudden is shown in Media Player as "Unknown Artist", "Unknown Album". The track names are still OK, and the actual MP3 files are still in the original locations (\\Music\Artist\Album\## TrackName) (where ## = track number).

iTunes shows everything properly, but Media Player is wrong. I've tried a tag editor but even with the correct settings, it doesn't want to re-tag the files - it wants to rename them. The tags within the files are correct.

Wondering if there's a "cache" of some sort, or another way to force Media Player to re-scan my entire library, and update the tags based on the directory structure. Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Media player shows everything as "unknown"

The basic problem here is that iTunes use ID3v2.4 tags, Windows (and WMP) uses ID3v2.3 tags and can't read ID3v2.4. So if you update the tags with iTunes and then add those tracks to WMP they're going to show up as "Unknown Artist". This is always going to cause problems if you try to use both iTunes and WMP libraries at the same time.

So pick which one you like better to use as your primary library and use the other one as a player only. You can use Mp3tag to take a look at the tags, see which versions are on the files and convert ones that are incorrect.

If you use iTunes as your primary library then I would delete the WMP database. But before you do you should turn off monitor folders so that WMP doesn't automatically add music files to it's library. Here's how to delete the database, ignore the last step:

Hello Djangelico, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you using an Aero theme?

If you are, then double check these items: You must be have True Color (32 bit) set instead of High Color (16 bit).
The desktop composition and Animate controls and elements inside windows options need to be enabled in Visual Effects.
The Desktop Window Manager Session Manager and Themes Services need to be set as Started and Automatic.
Refresh or update your WEI score. You will need an WEI score minimum of 2.0 in both Graphics & Gaming graphics in order for Aero to be activated.
Hope this helps,

Isn't that special?

The General tab under Properties says the drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28), and reveals no other useful information other than under the Details tab where is displays "CONFIGFLAG_FAILEDINSTALL"

How can I find out what this is supposed to be, or, how do I delete the entry? White out?

Could anyone tell me of a firewall (free or paid) that has a taskbar icon that turns to flickering lights whenever internet activity takes place.  I use Windows 7 Pro and would really appreciate anyone letting me know of such a firewall.

I have XP on a second older computer with ZoneAlarm Pro and I love how ZoneAlarm's little 'Z' in the taskbar changes to flickering lights to let you know when there's internet activity.  I have no idea why the company decided to remove this wonderful feature from later versions of the program.  This feature is invaluable for letting me know if there is NO activity where there SHOULD BE ... or if there IS activity when there SHOULDN'T be.

I found a small utility call 'LanLights' that put an activity light in the taskbar, but what I really want is a firewall that has that feature built-in as part of the program.

Cheers

I have windows 8 and have recently noticed a light blue square box with what looks like white sound waves randomly appearing and disappearing. It happens too quick for me to hover over said icon to see what it in the world it is or even to get a screen shot of it. Basically, I catch sight of it out of the corner of my eye and by the time I turn my focus on said icon it's already gone. Tried looking up the thing in my Task manager but there isn't anything that looks even close to what I saw, I've run my Anti virus but nothing seems to be wrong.. Any help with this is much appreciated,

One curiosity is this Icon in the task bar:

It is the Safely Remove icon.

I can't do anything beyond looking at it. Right clicking does nothing, there are no properties.

If I plug in a USB thumb drive it looks normal

But the icon never goes away.

I wonder if that could be related?

Its been almost two years since i bought my new laptop.. It was working fine, until, few days back, when a strange icon appeared on the taskbar.. It keeps on appearing after every 2 minutes.. It comes in and goes by so fast that i don't even get the chance to see what it is.. But, that's not it. When ever it appears, if i'm working on something or playing a game, the game minimizes itself for the moment and then, i again have to open it up. Its really annoying and makes me angry.. but, some how, i was able to take a picture of it... and, I've never seen such an icon before.. or maybe, i saw it but was not able to identify it. Anyways, i'm attaching the picture below.. Please do have a look and help me out with this problem.. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]

I'd suggest you run malwarebytes on this system to see what this annoying application is to attempt to remove it. In the mean time I will see if I can get this moved to malware section for you. Please do not post this in an alternate location, if the moderator agrees that this should be moved they will move it for you.I was thinking it might have been weatherbug, but the images on google dont show this.

Just this morning I noticed a new icon in the task bar. It's a blue icon with what looks like two stripes and stars in between the stripes. When I bring up the task manager I don't see any other apps running just Fire Fox.

I haven't installed anything recently and since it appeared sometime after I started Fire Fox, I also check my FF add-ons and don't see anything new in there. The icon does stay active when I close all other apps. I haven't opened anything up today except FF version 3.6.

The windows defender quick scan didn't detect anything.

A while ago I brought a Fujifilm FinePix 2300 2.1 mega pixel camera. I installed all the software and drivers and I have the "My Digital Camera" icon appear in "My Computer." The question is how do I get rid of the "My Digital Camera" icon once I uninstall everything?

Since then I have reinstalled all of it again to figure it out. Can anybody assist me?

When I try to open the "My Computer" icon, it takes about 3 minutes for the searchlight to return the list of drives and the shared documents and username documents folders. Have tried just about every anti-virus program and spyware program and defragged hd with Diskkeeper and nothing shows up but the three minute wait.

A strange DOS-like box appeared as well as several pop-ups appeared on my screen. Then my screensaver was replaced with a black one with a message telling me to install a security program. The taskbar started displaying messages from a fake windows security icon. An icon appeared on my desktop that says "TAG" with the title "Search Us" underneath. Pop ups about security occur whenever I use explorer. They do not occur when using I am Firefox (as I am right now).

Hello

I wonder if there is a way (through editing system files or registry) to change Windows 10 Start Menu "All apps" to something else like "My Programs". Also where is the icon file located in the system and how to change the default icon.

Thanks!

Answer:How to edit "All apps" icon and text in Windows 10 Start Menu

You can change icons by going to properties for the shortcuts. All apps is combined with shortcuts from these two folders:

C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

The icons are cached, so you won't see the changes right away.

Answer:Can I make "Open In New Tab" the Default, Edge Favorite Bar Icon/Links

In a word, no. How Microsoft Edge handles tabs is the single biggest problem I have with it. It's something I really can't get on with, to the point I keep going back to Internet Explorer because of it (that and it's inability to create desktop shortcuts).

What you can do is use the middle mouse button (scroll wheel button) to open webpage links/favourites/favorite bar links in a new tab. The problem is though, with Edge the focus doesn't go to the new tab that you opened, so you need to then manually click on each tab too (which is a PITA when you're opening and closing a lot of tabs all day long). On Windows Phone, it's even worse as you need to go into a separate tabs section to then click the link you wanted to just open in a new tab.

In Internet Explorer it's possible to customise the new tab behaviour so that it will "Always switch to new tabs when they are created". But you can't do that with Microsoft Edge.

It is possible to open a link in a new tab in Edge and automatically switch to that tab by holding CTRL and Shift when clicking on webpage links, but it's not a particularly workable solution and also this will only work on links in webpages, it won't work with your favourites/favorite bar links.

And finally, because Edge is a 'Modern' app instead of a Win32 application, mouse software such as Microsoft Mouse & Keyboard centre also won't allow you to assign an application (Edge) specific macro to automatically press CTRL and Shift w... Read more

I recently 'upgraded' to Win10 Version 1703 (Creator's), which uses Windows Defender Security Center, rather than good ol' Windows Defender. I have the tray icon in the Notification Area set to always show, but it displays a yellow exclamation point if the 'App and browser control' feature is not completely engaged. I do not use MS Edge and have the Smart Screen utility turned off for that, plus the one for the MS App Store as well. If I turn these on the yellow ! goes away, but I'd rather leave them off. Is there any way to remove the yellow ! from the icon when certain utilities are purposely turned off? Alternatively, does anyone (really) know if no data will be forwarded to Redmond (or Mumbai or wherever) if these features are enabled but the associated applications (Edge/Store) are never used/visited? Thanks in advance.

@Electrojim
Currently, I don't believe you can do that. I do believe that in the forthcoming Fall Update (Sept), your choices for those options will be honored and you will not have the yellow ! I will have to hunt up the announcement on that if you need to see it.

Hi !

I received a file through msn messenger and I accepted it, except it was malware. "Outerinfo" was installed on my computer. I removed it by uninstalling it with success. But I still have a lot of spam, problems with msn messenger and a few strange icons on my desktop: a "click here and fix errors" which I have never clicked on, a "net.exe" icon and "oo.exe". I tried to run panda and ad-aware but my computer was to slow to run them properly.

I would be very happy if someone could help me...

Thank you for helping!!!

I have an Asus CM1630 desktop running windows 7, 64 bit. SD card reader works, after adding drive letter, but there is no hardware removal or insertion tone and the is no icon to safely remove the SD card. The SD card works fine when placed in an USB adapter and plugged into the USB port - there is both the tone and the safe to remove... icon present.

For a while I could not get the Drive it(SD card reader) was in to show up. So I labeled it as Drive G: which was the original labeling and it shows up as a removable storage device. Any solutions out there?

Answer:SD card reader works but no "removal of hardware" sound or icon

If you were to use the safely remove hardware function on the card reader, it would uninstall the reader itself.

Right click on the Card drive letter in Explorer (My Computer) and select eject.

Hi all,

All of a sudden I have this problem where I right click on the Internet Explorer Icon on the taskbar and there isn't a Frequent list anymore. I used to have a list but now I must have accidentally done something.

Please help,

Thanks

Answer:IE Explorer Quick Launch Icon- No "Frequent" list when right clicked?

Hello FonzeGator, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If this in in Quick Launch, then you will not have a Jump List for it. You will only have a Jump List if it's pinned to the taskbar instead. I don't think you meant Quick Launch though.

You can use the tutorial below to reset and clear all Jump Lists. It may take a day or two before it shows back up.

Jump Lists - Reset and Clear All Items

Hope this helps,

As stated in the title, the Network icon on the taskbar in the bottom right, always shows the disconnected Ethernet, even while I am connected to wifi. I've also tried connecting it via the Ethernet port, and it still shows the disconnected Ethernet icon. Also, not sure if this is related or not, but at every boot, windows tries to install an unidentified-unnamed device. I will post screenshots of the problems.

I have a W520 with Windows 7. The power manager icon on the taskbar used to show percentage of battery remaining. A month or so back it stopped. Now it only shows "---". At start up, Power Manager reports it is version 6.07.  Within the Power Manager, the battery status is displayed normally: Does anyone know how to get the remaining charge display to function again?

Answer:Power manager taskbar icon no longer shows remaining charge.

The first thing I would do is update Power Manager to version 6.32:

And the current Power Management Driver:

Hopefully. this will take care of it.

(Occasionally it can happen with certain firewalls too.)

Have an issue on Windows XP.

The DDS.txt file is attached below.

Upon system startup there was a popup referencing worm.win32.netsky. (I don't want to start the system up again until hearing back.) I ran the Symantec removal tool here:

http://www.symantec.com/security_res...021816-1759-99

and it said that it wasn't found on the system.

Task Manager has been disabled somehow. We did not disable it manually.

The background wallpaper picture we had was replaced with a black box with red lettering saying

"YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED!"

In white text there is

"System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected. It is recommeded [sic] to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed [sic]"

(I've inserted [sic] to indicate spelling/grammar are entered verbatim.)

There is a tray icon that is a red circle with a white "X" in it. Every few minutes there is a balloon that pops up and says:

"Click here to protect your computer from apyware. Your computer is infected! Windows has detected an infection of spyware. It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you."

We have not clicked on this balloon to download anything.

ark.txt and attach.txt are uploaded and zipped as requested.

We do not have access to a Window... Read more

So I installed windows 10 on my laptop awhile ago and for a while it was working fine. The other day however when I turned on my laptop it appeared my computer "reinstalled" windows 10 for no reason, like it went through the entire reinstallation process like I was upgrading again. Not sure if this was due to a general update or what caused it. However, ever since that "reinstallation" Ive been experiencing some glitches. The main thing is that Im not experiencing an almost constant flashing/blinking of the loading icon next to my mouse pointer, I opened up the task manager and have aabout 70-80 backgroud processes along with almost 30 windows processes so Im not sure what is causing it.

The other main issue that Im noticing now is that when I sometimes watch videos (mostly youtube) the sound will cut out of the video and then the video will not play after refreshing, the videos will buffer but will not play. I also noticed that my music in itunes will not play and that when this happens I am unable to open up the start menu in my taskbar, I normally just restart my comp using ctl alt delete to fix the problem but it is rather annoying.

At this point I feel like downgrading back to windows 7, but going to the recovery center does not present me that option so I wouldnt be entirely sure how to do that safely.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed that my start menu doesn't have a "Turn Off Computer" button/icon. Now I have to "Log Off" and then press "Turn Off Computer" to shut down my computer. It's strange because I am the administrative user (I checked).

Also, my internet has become slower... either the page takes awhile to load or it never loads at all!

On top of that, I keep getting these pop-up notices from my computer (Symantec, I think--even though I didn't even know it was working... I thought it was expired) that says, "System Alert! System has detected a number of active spyware software... etc." Normally that wouldn't alarm me, but it happens every 5 or 10 minutes! And it's never been that persistent before.

One last thing... I tried to run AdAware and Spybot, but in the middle of the scan, my computer shuts down and when it boots up again, it says it occurred some kind of problem, do I want to report it to Microsoft? This happened twice. Maybe it's irrelevant, but I just wanted to put it all out there.

Dear All,

I have the "Action Center" flag icon always appear in the Windows 7 taskbar, even when there are "No current issues detected".

When I first installed Windows 7 it would only appear if there WERE issues detected, otherwise it would not display at all.

Now I don't know what happened, but it's just THERE constantly.

I know I can choose "Only Show Notifications" in the settings for it, but it's still actually there, only hidden.

The way it was before is that if no issues were detected it would not appear AT ALL.

Anyone know what's causing this/and more importantly how to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance!
