Missing / No Right Click Menus.

Question: Missing / No Right Click Menus.

After installing and then uninstalling (because of BSOD) the fubar'd security patch from last week, I now can not get right click menus anywhere. Nothing happens when I RT click. I've googled and gotten many hit on single missing items but nothing on all missing items.

It seems my registry is broke, under.
HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex it contains "(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)" that's all

HKCR\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers "REG_SZ (value not set)"
\DesktopDockShellExt "REG_SZ (value not set)"

Then several apps have there menus add on listed all with data in them. It seems to me I'm missing some data points in these registry blocks. Dose anyone know what is supposed to be in there?

Preferred Solution: Missing / No Right Click Menus.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Missing / No Right Click Menus.

Hello Indie, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you able to expand (double click on) the HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex key to have the ContextMenuHandlers and PropertySheetHandlers subkeys under shellex?

As a test to see if your context menus may just be disabled instead, see if using step 1 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below may be able to help afterwards.

I think this is related to tiles disappearing on the start menu. It feels like a graphic bug.
But I'm not sure.

Answer:Text in right click menus on taskbar missing

Hi, you may find the following of interest, if not of immediate help, but it may suggest something..
As it turns out, the data for the Jump List items isn’t in the registry at all, but in the user’s AppData. Specifically, in a collection of files in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations. There’s one file per application; I had a somewhat magical 42 files in mine. I noted that there is also a similar folder called %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations, with fewer files in it, and which I suspect contains a cache of Jump List items that have been added programmatically by each application (such as the ‘Play All Music’ command on Media Player’s Jump List.
The files in these folders don’t have particularly useful names, but if you open them in Notepad the contents will give you a clue as to what program each one belongs to (note: don’t edit the files directly). When I compared the folder on different machines it was clear the names are the same for each application.
The file for Explorer.exe was actually the first in the list for me, and is called 1b4dd67f29cb1962.automaticDestinations-ms. The solution was simple; delete the file. As soon as I had removed it, I was able to re-pin folders, the removed file was recreated, and my life was once again sane.

Please provide the following info of your Win 10:
OS Build
In case you don't know how to find them......
Start button > Settings > System > left side, at the bottom, About.......
Next window will tell you what you have.
Please post those info.
Thank you.
Meanwhile, do a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repair if any found.
Assuming right click at Start button still works ?
Right click at Start button > select either Powershell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) >
at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.....
sfc /scannow
> Enter.
It will take some time. Just wait.
When finished, it will give you one of the following 3 reports:
1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupt files and repaired successfully.
3. Found corrupt files but unable to repair some of them.
Please post back the result.

For some reason, the "search" option is missing from the context menu of certain folders. For instance, I have 6 folders in the same parent folder. If I right-click certain ones, "search" (and all the usual items) shows on the context menu. On others folders, it's missing altogether. It may have something to do with the type of content in the folders. i.e. one folder has nothing but fonts in it and the right-click menu has all the usual options including search. A folder right beside it has nothing but icons in it, and "search" (along with several other usual items) is missing.

Anyone know what gives...?

Answer:"Search" missing from folder right-click menus

Right click the problematic folders, click properties, click advanced. Is there a tick for Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed?

Fellow techs,
I'm having this problem on my own PC (one of them).
I'm running Win98 SE on a P3 933. I just noticed that when I try to create a new
folder (FILE menus, NEW or right click drive root and choose NEW), that NEW
isn't listed anymore. Its the damnest thing. The same thing happens in
any folder or any drive root, I no longer have the ability to create a
NEW folder or file (I can always create a new file by using a program, i.e.
WORD, EXCEL, etc, but I can't select NEW, then select WORD from the program
Can anyone help me with this please. I looked in folder options, I optimized
the system (registry clean, defrag, etc)

Thanks in advance,

Question: Right Click Menus

I used to have the option to scan files with Nortons Anti-Virus when I right clicked on them. Recently I had problems with a virus and lots of spyware, and I got rid of it all. Although, now I do not seem to have the option to scan my files with Nortons by right clicking on it and selecting that option. I was wonder if there was a way I could get it back without having to uninstall and reinstall Nortons entirely. On another note, is there a way to add commands or remove options? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

This is the first time I post a thread here (sorry for asking for help before doing the introducing myself bit).
Recently my computer started getting crazy. It's like if I kept right-clicking on my mouse all the time except I'm not. In particular, it makes Word impossible to use because I keep being stopped as I type.
This is the only problem I'm encountering. I used to have AVG and now I have McAfee preofessional 8 (updated) and I have a clean log. I also ran spybot and Ad aware and I am also clean. Additionnaly, I have Spywareblaster.
I run and update all those softwares very regularly so I usually don't have problems, but this one I can't solve myself. Also, I have SP2 and my Windows is updated.

Here is my hijackthis log (right after booting):

When I play a game, I get slight slowdowns after which my system will speed back up to normal. Or if I watch any video file with Media Player Classic, when I right click for the menu on the desktop or folders, my CPU spikes to 99 and stays there as long as the menu is open, video playback studders as well. Audio is fine. I never had this problem before and I dunno how to fix this.

I am running windows XP 64bit (NOT VISTA), latest version.
Radeon x800 w/cats 7.6 (using the CCC crap)
3200+ 64
2gigs pc3200 HyperX
Ive scanned my entire system for spyware/malware with Spybot SD, and AVG Malware/AV. Found nothing. Its a clean system.
So this leads me to believe something else is wrong. Any suggestions?

I googled and all i found was the advice to disable the Transistion Effects for menus and tooltips in the Display>Appearance>Effects, but that didnt help

Answer:When I right click, menus cause 99% CPU usage....

Probably caused by a program you installed that put a entry(context menu handler) in the context menu.

Download this.

Run it and disable context menu items one by one until you find the culprit. I had a problem on a person's computer where if you right clicked the computer would lock up. I used this program and did exactly as I described above, disabled context menu items one by one and I found the entry and what program that created it. All was well.

One of my biggest complaints about Vista or W7 is the inability to customize the image file type context menus to put my alternate choices at the top.

This saves always having to take the “Open With” (multiple choice test) to open a Image in an alternate program like Photoshop.

I’ve found out how to hack the registry entries for Irfanview to customize the Context menu for each image file type .. something like attached.

In the case of a gif file as shown, since it may be animated or have transparency …
I may want to open it in Explorer to see how it’ll look on the web ..
or in Photoshop’s Image Ready to get all the animated frames ..
or just send it to Photoshop for advanced editing.

For other image file types .. Photoshop is the alternate Choice.

I’ve tested this in W7-rtm7600 (x64) and with Photoshop CS2.

Anyone interested in how to do this ???

Any menu or dropdown I open closes before I can click on any of the options. It happens if I right click on the desktop screen to see the menu, right click on any of the programs/apps in the start menu to see the options, when I'm in a browser and click on a dropdown, etc. They all disappear before I can get a good look at any of the options or click on one. In order to select the "Choose the board..." and "Operating System" options for this question, I had to click on the dropdown and then quickly use my down arrow to start paging through the options. That's the only way I could get the dropdown to appear for more than a second or two. This is a brand new laptop that I've only used a couple times, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hey there, So I got a 11.6" yoga 300 yesterday and have had a completley terrible experience with it so far! The worst being that each time I open a right click menu, whether it be on the desktop or in any applications, it just closes itself within seconds! I've been cautious and checked if it's user error; grazing the touchpad, etc, but it's definitely the machine. I bought this so I could do simple college work and it's impossible to even rename a file or folder because of this! Any suggestions - I am all ears!!

This is specific to Microsoft Access 2010. There was another 'Solved' thread that had a menu drill down that didn't even relate to Access 2010. OK, Select: File/Options/Current Database/Ribbon & Toolbar Options - you will most likely find that 'Allow Full Menus' is already checked. You also need to check the 'Allow Default Shortcut Menus' option for the right click menus to work. It took me ages to find this simple little option, but oh boy what a difference it has made. When I click on a pull down (or drop down) menu or I right click for a menu, the menu briefly appears then disappears before I can click on a menu item. This occurs on certain software only, example Libre Office, VLC, GIMP, Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Avast, Adobe Digital Editions and others but I have no problem with Adobe Reader, Audacity, Irfanview, Xnview, Notepad, etc. I also noticed that the busy icon is always blinking. Websites that have pull down selection boxes are also affected (yes including PC Advisor). Ribbon menus are OK so far. Also of note is that it only occurs as a standard user; admin user is not affected that is, all menus work fine and the busy icon does not blink. I have scanned with Avast and Trendmicro Housecall and there are no viruses. It occurs regardless of input devices (touchpad, mouse). I have tried rebooting several times.

This started a couple of weeks ago and it's driving me nuts. If I click the folder icon on the taskbar on my desktop, The libraries window opens fine, then if I click on documents or pictures, etc, that opens fine/quickly. BUT once the folder is open, if I right click on any of the pictures to get the menu for opening/sending the pic somewhere, etc, the little blue delay circle pops up for up to a minute. If I try to cancel it, it shuts the whole library page down, if I wait for a minute or two the menu will finally pop up and allow me to make a selection. The same thing happens over on the left side if I try to click the little arrows for the drop downs under the main folder headings, it takes forever and if I try to cancel it shuts it down. Same thing happens when I try to search for documents. Any ideas?

Answer:Right click & drop down menus freezing in Libraries

There's something installed that integrates with Explorer (most likely for right-click context menus) that is holding things up. Can you think of any program that you've installed that performs anything like this?

One way at possibly figuring it out is using Process Explorer. Open it and then attempt to do anything that will display the symptoms. When it's hung up on it, observe which process is taking up the most CPU (if it's not already sorted by CPU or CSwitch Delta column, do so). I would assume it'd be Explorer.exe. Either way, click on the process and it'll bring up a window display current running threads. Again, discover which one is taking up the most CPU/CSwitch Delta and then double click that. Click the "Copy All" and paste here for reference. Do the same for a number of the various actions that are hanging on you, and describe what you did for each one that caused it to hang.

You can also generate minidumps or full dumps to provide for us to analyze. While it's hanging, right click the suspect process and go to Create Dump then select the dump file size you want. Full dumps are large and you'll need to zip up and upload to a 3rd-party filesharing site, but they offer excellent details on what's going on. Minidumps may also be able to assist, but it's preferred to have a number of them.

I thought it was a nifty little utility, but i don't want to pay 30 bucks for a yearly subscription to download some little utility they had on there... then i thought of this website... and remembered i got some cool shareware type programs on here before like the Windows Key disabler program (i hate this key).

Am using Vista x64 Home Premium, FYI.

After using the right-click context menu on a taskbar item or toolbar icon, say to close a program, my taskbar stops responding. I can no longer select a different item in the taskbar or right-click anything. If I use ALT-TAB to switch to something else, the taskbar becomes functional again.

Any ideas what's going on here? This just started in the last several days but I can't for the life of me recall what I might have changed for this to start happening.

The taskbar has some powerful features that have become almost indispensable.

Right click gives you a menu. In the past I've just used my mouse to roll up to the item I need and click to access. NOW if I roll my mouse up to the menu, as soon as I am off the taskbar icon the menu disappears (about 90% of the time).

I can access the menu (assuming I keep my cursor on the taskbar icon) with my up/down arrow keys but this is like stopping typing to write down a sticky note with a pen -- highly inefficient.

How can I get mouse access back?

I've not found anywhere that anyone has talked about this. I can find no control panel or registry values that would obviously affect this.

Note: If I create a new account on this same computer there is not a problem with mouse access so this is likely not a virus (and I do carry an up to date virus checker)

I read an article that said all you had to do was edit the Registry by doing a search for ShellNew and remove the entire key if you didn't want any of them. I did this several times and did find all of them at least 5 times. But they are still there.

What is the secret for getting rid of these items?

Hi, whenever I right click the right click menu will close after a few seconds. I've tried everything I can to fix it but nothing helps. I need my laptop to work right because I'm doing my A-Level computer science project on it and need right click (oddly enough). The same also happens if I search something on the internet then the google box that opens to suggest stuff also closes. It's as if my laptop has a process that is interrupting it and closing it and the loading cursor with the circle is constantly flashing. Also if i drag a window it will snap back to it's old position after a few seconds, unless i let go and move it again. This is getting really annoying, does anyone know what could be wrong?

(also I don't know if this is related, but my laptop keeps freezing and going black then around 30 seconds working again, with an error that either says "The graphics driver has stopped responding" or "Opera has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware".)

Thanks if anyone can help

Hi, sorry to here of this inconvenience.

Could you say which Win 10 build you are using?
- Pro/Home? (press Windows key + R, type winver to see the build number)

Could you complete your system specs?
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums - Windows 10 Forums

Do you have any useful system restore points?

Do you have any disk images or a system image created before this happened which you can restore?

It really helps if you can give some history.
When did this start happening? Did all of these symptoms start to happen at the same time?

For example: Everything was fine with the previous build (1511), but all these problems started to happen after I upgraded to the anniversary build (1607).

Finally for now, do these problems happen
a: after a clean boot
b: in Safe Mode
(If unsure how to do that you can search for instructions or see the appropriate tutorial in the Tutorials section).

Please be as specific as you can in your reply. Thanks!

Here's the scoop. My workstation got setup by some independent tech who has since pretty much vanished.

He installed WinXP Professional X64 onto the workstation for some reason. I'm a web developer and I absolutely don't need/want X64 because of whatever limitations, and it's not like I need it.

Anyways, I'm stuck with it because I don't want to take my boss's time fixing something he already paid for. It'll get fixed eventually, but I'm on a tight schedule and even making this post feels like a huge waste of time to me.

The problem isn't exactly that he installed X64 though, it's that he installed a bunch of garbage with it. Customizer XP and TweakUI are both installed and both "tweaked" apparently. I had to enable all of the Control Panel extensions again and do all sorts of other crap.

Here's my main problem though. I have no Right-Click menus on the desktop or taskbar, or taskbar applications. When I right click on a taskbar application, the window (such as this one) loses focus but no menu appears. I'm quite sure this was just applied as a tweak for whatever reason. The case is the same on the administrator account and this setting apparently applies to all users.

As you can see, I can't unlock the taskbar.
So, symptoms:

1) No right-click menus on the taskbar or desktop
2) No desktop icons and no way to enable them (there's an option in TweakUI, but it does nothing.)
3) Window... Read more

In order to get get no icons on my desktop in windows 2000 I had to use a regestry hack, and that hack did the exact things that you are describing, I of of course wanted this to happen.

I'll try to google it to find what I did. I am not sure it would help tho.

I mostly use my notebook for typing papers. When in Word 2013, or trying to type in a web address, I cannot drag my curser to select text. I can only select text by clicking three times. Also, I can no longer click on a drop down menu, and then move my curser over the option I want to select THEN click. I must click the drop down menu, hold down the button, drag my curser over to the option I want to select, and then release the button to select the option. It doesn't sound like a big deal but it's really annoying when I'm typing a ten page pape .Please help!

I'm having a problem with ALL the saved passwords and ALL drop-down menus using Foxfire. I used to be able to double click in a box that I'd previously saved the log-on info for and the options would pop-up in a drop-down menu. Now when I double-click in the same boxes, I see a flash of print that lasts less than a second and then the box goes back to blank. Can't get anything to stay in the box unless I retype it every time. I work with a LOT of user-names and access codes for my job. It's a pain to look up and retype the sequences every time I need them.

Not sure if it's related but the problem started a few days after I installed a free version of AVG virus software. I've tried going back and to two different restore points that I know were before the problem started, but it hasn't helped.

I also had an issue where an internal fax program kept overriding my default printer. I solved that problem by uninstalling all print options except the default printer. Not sure how the fax became the default, but it started about the same time that the drop-down and access code issues started.

Here is the recommended info from the TSG SysInfo box. Thanks in advance for your help!

I had many temporary internet files and other clutter from months of fairly heavy internet usage. My solution was to download a "freeware" internet clutter cleaner from the internet. In addition to "cleaning the clutter"- I lost some functionality as well. None of the right click context menus work anymore in any of the Windows Programs I use- including on the Windows desktop. Scouring Google for help techniques and tips: I tried to resolve the problem myself without much luck. Here are the two things I have tried so far... 1. In the "Windows Policy Editor"- there is an option to remove "Windows Explorer's Default Context Menu". I double checked that this setting was disabled. 2. "typed regedit in the Start search box. Went down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Policies - Explorer. In the right hand pane I looked for “NoViewContextMenu” so I could set its value to 0." The entries in the registry do not exist. I have only three registry entries under explorer. These entries include "Default", "NoDrives", and "NoDriveTypeAut..." I know that I may still have some options- including a "system restore," but I am hoping to use that method only as a last resort. I can still use the context menus (except for the desktop menu) using a keyboard shortcut. I would like my right click mouse shortcut functionality back. I am certain that my mouse is worki... I'm wondering if this is related to another problem I've noticed also: whenever I try to install certain programs I get an error message stating that the version I'm trying to install is not compatible with Microsoft ME, even though I'm running Win 7. This is installed on a media center style computer though. I know I can live without the context menus, but having them back would sure make life a little easier. Am I all alone here? I am having trouble sending mail and info on web seems to advise it is my SMTP settings. Problem is that I don`t seem to have the OUTGOING SERVERS pointer on the Accounts Settings or Options. I have Server Settings but that only allows me to choose default Server.

Has anyone else had this problem ? Is it likely to be the result of security settings or browser interference or something like that. I can`t see anything on the Mozilla advice pages about this.

Answer:Thunderbird missing menus

I can`t find the replies that were here yesterday, although I have emails of them in my gmail account.

I was asked to provide further information. Here it is

In Gandi I have a domain with 5 free email accounts. I have used 4 of these recently to set up new email addresses. Gandi only collects mail and forwards it to servers, not to email clients, as I understand it because it only deals with mail boxes. I set these up to use POP 3 as suggested by gandi.
I have set up gmail to collect mail with gandi addresses by adding the gandi accounts to

on gmails Settings: accounts page.

On the gmail site, I have sent an email from the primary gandi address to my husband (who has a computer in the next room with separate email account with Yahoo). It arrived almost immediately . And I have sent and received one from his address to primary gandi address without a problem.

But if I write one in Thunderbird to my husband, it is rejected with An error occurred sending mai with following error mesagel:

The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: +OK Gpop ready for requests from d6pf35627393eev.7.

So I think it must be the Thunderbird settings that are incorrect. As I said I cannot check the SMTP settings on Thunderbird because I cannot find the menu. It is not where it is supposed to be. When I go on to Account settings, I find the menu for using default server but nothing... Read more

Hi all, I recently took delivery of a Yoga 2 13", and once I figured out how to get into the BIOS I took a look around and made some notes. Initially the menus were: Debug, Information, Configuration, Main, Advanced, Security, Power, Boot. At some point the contents of the BIOS changed and now Debug, Main, Advanced and Power no longer appear. Does anyone know what might have caused that, and how I can get them back? T.

Hi All

I have a client with a strange OfficeXP problem which I have never seen before. any of the Office apps can be opened without any problems, but when you click on the menu bar only the shadow of the menu apears! This only happens in OfficeXP - there are no customising/tweaking utillities on the machine and all other apps work fine. Tried the usual repair, then uninstall/re-install of office.

Any ideas would be appreciated

I am struggling to come to terms with both Windows 7 and IE9. Call me a ludite, but I still prefer XP.. Never mind. More importantly, I do miss the drop down menues that were a feature of previous versions - where, in particular can I now manage my toolbars, ensure everything is locked etc. And finally, is it possible to convert the 'Tools' button into a toolbar?

Answer:Using IE9 - missing drop down menus

You may find this article useful on IE9 features. Don't use it myself as I much prefer Firefox.
Stick with Windows 7 - it really is very good. Have a look at this article about toolbars.
If on the other hand you would prefer to have back some of the XP features, have a look at this article and the options it offers.

Things I have done:
Set a new theme, updated and reinstalled video card drivers, SFC scan and no errors. Reset video card settings for users.

Then boot from the USB with the windows 10 on it, then go through the setup process. Afterthat, you can copy all of the data on the other usb. If this does not help, Contact Windows support.

Hi guys!

I thought I'd seen the answer in here before, but am coming up empty when searching.

When Word97 is opened, in WIndows98se, it is a blank doc with no menus or toolbars at the top. I thought there was a F key that would hide the toolbars, but I struck out there. I renamed, to no avail as well. I am sure this is much more simple than uninstalling/reinstalling.

Thanks a ton for the help,

I have a Dell desktop with MS Windows XP Professional, version 2002, service pack 3. The PC info is

Pentium ® 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79 GHz, 0.99GB of RAM

First, I've tried System Restore and no matter what data I pick, it won't work.

I want to password protect my computer however setting a password only works when I log out the computer. I discovered that if you simple shut down and restart, it won't ask for the password. I wanted to set that ctrl+alt+del thing but when I go to the user account area where it tells me to do that, there is no menu or toolbar to be able to select Advanced Options as the help menu tells me.

Also, if/when my PC freezes while on a web page and I do the ctrl+alt+del to bring up that window that will allow me to End Now, there is no menus there at all. Just a white box and a listing of what's running. There are no buttons or anything so that the only way I can even close that window is to right click on little green chart in next to the time at the bottom of the screen and tell it to close.

Another weird thing is that when I restart the computer, there is a set of little black outlined boxes in the lower right taskbar next to the time and I can only get them to go away by doing ctrl+alt+del. When I do say it makes a "funny" sliding beep sound is the only way I can think to describe it.

I have a feeling I've got a virus or spyware thing going on. And I certainly don't know how to get rid of it. ... Read more

Perhaps it has something to do with my previous problem with nerovision I discovered this morning?

Previous Problem - Hi everyone

I recently installed Nero 7 Ultra version which works perfectly, Nero 7 is much better than the 5 I got with my computer a year ago.

Anyway, NeroVision (the DVD authoring program) has templates for the menu's of DVDs and SVCDs but the pre-stalled backgrounds and templates that come with the CD appear to not work. The files are in the Nero windows folder but the pictures (if you click on them) say "no preview available" like they're blank files or corrupt or something. I've tried a full reinstall of nero 7 ultra twice and it's not fixed the problem.

Unless my disc is broken? I don't really know what else could be the problem. Or perhaps I could just delete the template files and get them from somewhere else? Or install them over the top of the corrupt/empty files?

Greetings again, and Happy New Year! A few days ago something (or things) bad, found their way onto my Media Center Edition pc. These manifest via a screen with a bold security page telling me that I was possibly infected with viruses, worms, etc. Having had experiences with these screens before, I did not try to exit out, or click on the "close" button. I went to the task mgr 1st where I thought I could kill the screen, but found that the task mgr closed as soon as I opened it. This led me to believe that I did indeed have an infection of some sort, and since it had obviously made it past my antivirus program (avira), I made the decision to reinstall the OS, as this had happened before. My computer is an Empower Media Center brand and runs the Media center version of XP Pro. Once I began the install however, I began to have problems. I started getting messages saying that this file or that could not copy, so I made the decision to put Windows 7 on it instead. This is the RC version, and, having tried it on another computer and found it to be a welcome change to what I had found with Vista, I was more than eager to see how it would perform on this computer. The install went without a hitch - I did a clean install and 7 looked great. I decided to start personalizing it by changing the default theme. That's when I discovered that I have no context menus. I tried right clicking on files, folders, even on my browser, all to no avail. My context menus have simply disappea... Read more

On the bottom left of the Taskbar, there are two icons: one gives me the task view and is NOT a problem. I am very new to W10 so I'm not sure how the window icon is supposed to work. If I right click, I get a menu and I understand that. However, if I left click, nothing happens. I suspect I inadvertently changed a setting. I used to get, on the left side of the monitor, when I left clicked, a different menu and some apps that 'looked' like W8. Can someone help me get back to this point please? If I'm not being clear in my explanation, please tell me and I will try to clarify.

looks a windows systemfile is broken,

Use SFC to check and repair windows systemfiles.

See this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8
SFC Command - Run in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Tutorials

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

If not, then run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again.

I have an HP Compaq 6200 SFF running 64-bit Windows 10 Pro that won't print to either of two HP printers I have tried.

I have tried an HP OfficeJet 3830 and an HP OfficeJet 4650 and get identical results with both.

I can, though, print to a Canon MP470 (so maybe the brand needs to be non HP-to-HP, ha, ha!).

In all cases, I am using a wired (USB) connection between PC and printer(s).

I have tried two different USB cables, and get the same results with both.

The printer shows up in Control Panel -> Printers and Devices.

I have tried removing and rediscovering the device from 'Printers and Devices' via right-click -> Remove. This has not fixed the problem.

I can scan ok (with either HP printer, and to a file on the PC), but in various apps (browsers, word processors, spreadsheets, MS Paint, etc), but in all cases there is no entry for either HP printer in the Print drop-down menu.

I have tried both: i. printing after allowing the printer to install via plug-and-play; and ii. installed HP's printer drivers. In both cases, the printers are missing from the drop down menus.

In 'Printers and Devices', if I right-click on either of the problematic printers and choose Troubleshoot, the result is 'Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem'.

In 'Printers and Devices', if I right-click on the problematic printer and choose Properties, then Hardware tab, Device Status is, "This device is working properly." There are three entries in the Hardware tab ... Read more

Hi JustSomeGuy. Welcome to the TenForums @JustSomeGuy

Normally HP products like you to install software and when they ask you connect device. Seems like a technicality but worth trying. I would uninstall devices, drivers and software and then retry.

Before doing this I would ensure I had a system image made with your tool or Macrium Reflect (free). Then if something goes wrong you can get back to where you were.

Hey everyone I have a bit of a troubling problem. For some odd reason, my computer is not displaying red at all...except for the monitor menus. I have narrowed it down to some type of connection problem or a motherboard problem by eliminating possibilities. I tried a second monitor and still had issues. Any advice on how to proceed? Before the complete loss of red, it would flicker on and off for a while (2 days before). I tried cleaning out the inside of the case, restoring my computer to a month before, reinstalling the video card drivers, restoring all the monitor settings to the original ones, tweaking the actual video color settings. So, if any of you have any ideas how to go forward, it would help a lot. Thanks beforehand.

Thanks everyone for the ad. I have a previously stable quad core Asus MB PC which since the most recent Aniversary updates has become almost unusable. Right click menus only display the shadow line and are otherwise invisible. Moving the mouse over them leaves a pointer trail resembling a PaintshopPro paint tube. Hovering over the top right close box sometimes restores the text but this can take up to a minute. Folders in tree menus in Explorer or Outlook don't highlight so one can't be sure if they are selected and even desktop icons are affected, moving one doesn't appear to work but after a [long delay the icon will jump to it's new position. I'm assuming the updates were the culprit as I have reverted to a month old image which doesn't seem affected, however the updates reinstall and it becomes unusable. At the moment I'm using the old image on wifi with metered chosen to hopefully block the automatic updates. I tend to use the Microsoft onscreen keyboard for banking etc and that displays as an empty pane with just a shadow indicating its size. The PC is an H81-M Plus with a Haswell quad processor, 16g DDR3 and a Samsung SSD C: drive. I did use the Asus windows EZ updater on the Bios a few days earlier [rather than direct USB] but it seemed to go ok. I even put in a GT730 video card [1G] in case the onboard video I'd been using wasn't compatible [no drivers since 2015] but that didn't help. Any suggestions would be most the way programs seem unaf... Read more

You didn't mention resetting your BIOS (UEFI) so ...

If you think it is BIOS have you reset it by removing power cord, removing CMOS battery and holding power button for 20 seconds. I saw in one manual for a board like yours they suggested placing jumper on CLRTC headers instead of using power button. Check your manual for "Approved" method.

‘search…’, and ‘sharing and security’ are missing from context menus in explorer when I right click a drive letter. This only applies to the drive root for some reason. If I right click on a subfolder, these items ARE in the context menu. Is there any way to fix this? If not, what alternatives do I have for modifying existing shares on my drive roots?

-I’m running XP pro
-I have tried logging in as Administrator in Safe mode
-simple file sharing enabled
-The server service is running

Note: I am familiar with the Registry and have used it many times, before you worry
Okay, i want to create a command in my right-click menu, in Windows XP, so, for example when i'm video editing, Web-page desiging and alike, in "my recent documents", i can go to the directory of the file itself, instead of simply opening the file.

Its a simple timesaver really and although everything i use is organised into folders, i sometimes wonder if theres organised and then too organised with many sub-directorys leading to the files i need.

So, in the registry, my first guess was to go HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell

Creating a key named "Explore" and editing it to display the name i wanted in the right click-menu.
Then i created a sub-key, labelled it command, and am working upon what i need to do in here.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest the line i will need, i've been working on it for a while with no luck.
I know the basics, for example explorer.exe is a must, then followed by various commands such as /e,/root, etc etc.

What i'm saying is, i know the commands, just not how i need to structure them to do what i am asking.

Thank you if you can help.

Answer:Solved: "open containing Folder" command in Right-Click menus

If I understand correctly, 'open containing folder' could be interpreted as 'Find Target'.
Do a google search:"right+click"+++"find+target"
You will find a lot of info on this subject. It appears to be slightly complicated to get this to work properly.

A simpler way would be to let a Dll file do all the work:

Normally, when I open My Computer and any folder within Windows XP Explorer, there is on the left side of the folder a series of menus, including Create New Folder, Rename Folder, plus towards the bottom left a place where photos are previewed (a preview panel). Well, suddenly, during some of my tweaks, this left side of the folders is missing! The folder simply has a list of the folders. I have looked in the Tools section but cannot find how to restore this left blue panel with all the shortcuts and info.

I have attached a screenshot that shows what I am referring to.

Please, someone, can you help me! This is a most useful tool that is now missing!

Answer:Solved: XP Explorer Folders Missing Left Blue Section/Menus!

sounds like you changed it to windows classic view ..
goto folder options and check >show common tasks in folder
edit sorry that under the general tab under folder options for that folder

I just downloaded Windows 10 and am having issues with: missing pop-up menus; "Edge" & "Store" apps don't run (open with plain blue screens); I can't access Settings (same problem--I get only a plain blue screen); also Word 7 is buggy (i.e. the minimize button is missing when I have a doc open). From reading other threads here, I decided I should run a System File Check in Windows, but when I right click on the Start button (well...where I assume the start button is--all I have is a black square in the lower right corner!) all I get is a tall rectangle box with an arrow, and no text, no menu choices. When I click on the arrow, I get another tall box with no options.
I have an HP Touchsmart desktop (would like to give more specifics, but the "my computer" file is gone and I don't know where to find that info in 10 yet). I use that the problem? I'd sure appreciate any ideas of where I should go from here. Thank you!

Answer:Newly downlowded; missing menus, blank screens, apps don't work...

Hi AnnetteC, welcome to Ten Forums. I would try to run the SFC command and see if that helps. This is from the tutorial forum. . There are other ways to get to open a command prompt such as + X on your keyboard. The tutorial has a link to a whole bunch of different ways to open one. Work through the tutorial, it will show you a number of ways to attack this problem.

Hey guys,

I restarted my PC because of a problem with a webpage, and when I tried to log back on my desktop icons were missing and so were my startup options that are normally on the toolbar. Also, some context menus are missing, all I get are "send to drive F, and E, not desktop or anything.

I restarted again, and now my wallpaper is gone, but some startup options seem to be back.

My icons/folders display when I go to C:/Users/<myname>/Desktop, but don't appear in the actual desktop.

There are probably other screwed up things too.

What's going on? Did I pick up a virus or something?

EDIT: "Set as Wallpaper" is broken also 0_O

Answer:Solved: Windows 7-Desktop Shortcuts, startup options, context menus missing

Huh, I seem to have solved it by restarting over and over again. WTF?

Still wondering why this would happen in the first place.

Solved for now at least.

Once, some time ago, the item "cmd" appeared as the second entry (under EXPAND) in most right-click Explorer menus. When clicked it brought up the "install an application" error.

It was necessary to restore the partition image to get rid of this entry.

With the install of SP1, it's back. How can it be banished without reverting to an old image?

Answer:"cmd" appears in Explorer right-click menus

Hi borate,

Check out these two registry entries, particularly the first one.

Back up then delete if not required.

Hi hope you can help and my apologies in advance for lack of using the proper tech words for things.

About a week ago I started to have problems with my right click menus, drop down boxes and ability to close browser and browser popups.

The problem is intermittent and seems to happen once I have been online for a while rather than at start up.

When I right click, the menu either doesn’t come up at all, or is empty, ghosted out, with just a vague outline of the frame.

When I encounter a drop down box option, I click on it and no menu drops down.

And as said above, when this is happening, I have to close browser and pop up boxes via the task manager.

When this started I immediately did 2 full virus scans, spybot & adaware scan, plus I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti Malware and did a full scan with one find, details below:

Hi all,I replaced my power supply to upgrade from 250w to 480w. I carefully unplugged the old and re-plugged the new (after unplugging power source) and when I confidently turned everything back on the hard drive seems not to work. there's a faint beep but I'm not sure if it's the POST beep or not. (I have a vague understanding of that)Instead, the hard drive clicks quite clearly and it clicks 4x then pauses, then 4x, pause, etc, etc. I tried re-plugging the old power supply back in and get the same result. The computer screen just stays blank the whole time.Did my hard drive just die at that point? Could switching ps cause the hd to die?a few facts:I do touch the computer case before I stick my hands in there to remove static charge.HD is western digital caviar 40g WD400Computer is 3ghz P4 running xp with sp3replacement power supply says it's for a P4 and it fits perfectly where the old one came out, same connections etc.I have a 160g drive on it's way from Ebay that I intended to replace this drive with anyway and I have the 40g drive backed up on an external so it's not a disaster but it sure is an inconvenience.I'm ready to try hitting it on the side (percussive maintenance) but thought I'd try a post first. :-)Thanks,John

Answer:western digital hard drive "click,click,click,,etc

try a different power connector to the hard drive. I take it the machine doesn't post, then? If not, it could be something else.Does everything work again when you use the old PSU?

This has happened 3 or 4 times and I always got rid of it. But I don't know how I got it and I don't know how I got rid of it. How to explain this phenomenon?

My right-click drop down menus (all of them, everywhere) are doing this little trick opening thing. Normally they just open fully and instantaneously. Now they open from a starting point near the mouse pointer and sort of blossom open. Then if there is a secondary menu that opens when hovering over a little pointer in that menu, it scrolls open instead of just appearing normally.

If I have described this adequately, has anyone ever had this and know what causes it, and how to banish it??

Hi, this is a small problem that I hope someone can help me with, that I have not been able to solve. From the question, you'll recognize that my PC knowledge, leaves a lot to be desired. I use an up to date PC, less than 2 years old, that was set up and working perfectly with Win 10. On (7/28) I received and installed the Win 10 "creators" update 1703 version 15063.483. Everything went fine but for a "small" problem, small, except to me. The start menu (I use the Classic Start) and the right click, context menus, the font is too small for me. I'm in my mid 70s and need the print to be larger, with those menus. I have tried searching Win 10 and Classic Start settings, to no avail. It seems you can enlarge most anything, except make those particular fonts larger. I have used all size setting in the Win 10 set up and have nothing in the "Classic Start" settings. I would appreciate any suggestions, that would allow me to adjust the fonts, in those areas. I have enlarged the font size in the other places that I needed. I have gone to the MS "communities" forums and the suggestions there, were the standard set size or scaling, which made everything else larger, except the start and context menus. I did not have this issue with the previous Win 10. I seem to have stumped the folks there, here's hoping some of you all will be able to help.
Thank you before hand for your help. S Rubin

I am creating a web page using Frontpage. I have a navigation bar that when you click on link, it takes you to the first page of that category, then displays the sub menus in the navigation bar.

Does anyone know how or where I can find script to create a rollover effect which will display the sub-menus to the side of the link, without having to actually go to a new page? Is this feature a javascript function? If easier to show, please refer me to sites that do this effectively so I can look at the code.

Thanks very much!

Good morning - I would love some help with my latest problem.I used to be able to right click a folder, and from the drop-down menu, select a spyware programme and scan that folder. But I now find that "A-Squared free" and "IObit Security 360" are missing from the sub menu.My other spyware programmes are there, the two missing programmes still work normally. Can someone explain to me how I get these two programmes back onto my sub menu.Thank you for your time - Ian

Answer:Some "right click" options missing

You could try re-installing them or try ShellExView click here I normally use that for removing items from context menus but it might work for putting them back. With ShellExView if you sort by type and then look for Conext Menu, double clicking then gives various options.
