Cleaning up the friend of a friend's completely virus infested, badly working computer.

Windows 7x64 HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC

The Basics:

While I was beginning to install and manually offline-update various anti-malware tools so that I could begin to determine what I needed to do to get this thing clean and properly operable, I noticed while looking at Programs and Features that many of the install dates for various software were dated in various months in 2013. My installations were 1 year, 2 days ahead of the current date. Windows Explorer shows this to be consistent throughout the files and folders installed.

Looking at the install dates for some of the HP proprietary software/bloatware, I can tell this behavior started some point after the computer was purchased and used (the bloatware installation date was one day after the warranty start date listed in the BIOS). I am presuming dates on files and folders created, modified, or accessed from the point of the initial occurrence of what caused these particular incorrect future timestamps are the only ones affected.

The clock and date were wrong by the exact amount forward as were the install dates for the files I installed, so, as expected, the files were taking their timestamp from the computer's time. I assume whenever the computer date and time were maladjusted is when the problem started.

I fixed the time and date, but the files and folders did not adjust their timestamps, again as expected.

So, here are my questions:

1. Are there any particular problems I am not considering which could be caused by the incorrect dates, other than some particular searching and arrangement issues, which in this case I think would be superficial? This type of date information is just descriptive metadata for files and folders, correct?

2. Is there any way to fix this? I cannot think of any, but maybe there is something I am missing, hashing it out in my mind. If the BIOS clock and the Windows date and time settings were separate and the date metadata were generated based on a timer referencing the BIOS clock, then I could see a way to repair this. But, at least on this notebook, a change in one is reflected in the other--I think this is how Windows OSes operate in general. Anyway, any ideas?

3. Finally, after I finish cleaning and repairing the notebook, is there any way to globally reset all of the date metadata on all files/folders to reflect the present? So long as having incorrect future timestamps does not affect operation, then this is superficial, but it is irrationally driving me crazy. If it were my computer, I could not stand it--barely can stand it as it is. I have found a program that lets you reset all of the dates of all files in a folder, or the dates of all folders visible when opening a directory or subdirectory, but not both simultaneously, and so of course not anything that would change the dates of all the files and folders nested within one another from root.

Going to go snag myself some feta and olives from the grocery store and hopefully one of you will explain why my solution is so obviously obvious. If not, I will likely have this computer for a day or so, so I have a bit of time for your individual or collective genius to shine through.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I know I am not supposed to bump this thread, and I will not do so again if it falls off the first few pages again without a reply, but I only have this notebook for about 24 more hours, so, in hopes that someone who hasn't yet looked at it might see it and have some insight, I am moving it back up. And I am assuming doing this is better than simply opening a new thread rewording the same exact issue.

If no one replies, I won't move it up again. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there any way to modify the "created" and "modified" dates assigned to a .exe file that's on your hard drive? Or, to make the program think it's creation date was today?

I would [almost] swear that I used to be able to click on a file in Windows Explorer and then add or change it's details such as the dates. I may be "misremembering" but I think I could do it at the bottom of the Explorer screen or by rick-clicking, selecting properties and the Details tab.

If it was ever true it is no longer so. I can't get any of the fields for a file, from Explorer or file properties/details, to open up for entry or modification.

After looking at similar posts here, I went through the Take Ownership process just to make sure there were no security issues but that didn't make any difference.

Shouldn't I be able to change a file's details and, if so, how the heck do I do it?

Ever since I encountered similar difficulty in changing timestamps, I found and have been using SKTimeStamps. It also comes in 64bit flavor.

Hi Everyone

Kind of new to this so please bear with me.

I was recently reviewing the properties of some word docs (word 2003) on my system (XP SP3) when I noticed that the file Created and Modified information contained both a date and time stamp. However, the Accessed tag only contained a date and no time information at all.

I have searched for the past few days trying to find an answer and can find a lot of utilities which will allow you to change this information, but no info as to why the time is missing.

This seems to involve only this one file.

I made the mistake of calling Microsoft Support and got the usual BS run around and no answer.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

When I click on the properties to find out when I created a file (Word, Acrobat, etc..), the "created" date is more recent than the "modified" date. Is there an explanation for this? I am using Windows XP, SP2.

I use the search box in the top LH corner of an Explorer window to search for files modified on a certain date.

For example, I searched for files modified in My Documents on the current day's date .....29th October at the time. There is a file I KNOW has been modified because I have been working on it all day. The search returns 3 files, but not the one in question. I then search for files modified the day before, 28th October, and it turns up on the list, at the right it gives the date as 28th October. I right click on the file, choose file properties, and it shows date modified 29th October, last modified 5 minutes ago.

Today, 30th October, I check again, and again it doesn't appear on the list of files modified 29th October (I haven't worked on it yet today). It still shows up if I search for files on 28th October, and again the file properties box shows date modified 29th October.

Yet some other days it shows up on the current day's search correctly.

Both the file type (Word Doc) and location are included in the index for searching, and the index is shown as being complete when I do the search.

What is causing this hit and miss behaviour?

Hi! I have install Windows 10 before 2 weeks. I noticed that every time i search for a file at the upper right box, every file that appeared as a result of current search (even if i didn't use it), changes last modified date and takes the exact search time and date as last modified. This is a disaster for a current folder that i keep at my desktop since these files were shown from newer to older. Is there any solution for this problem?

Which batch command and switch should I use to backup a new file with a old (sometimes very old) Date Modified date in a way that avoids backing up files unnecessarily? I've been using xcopy with the /D switch in my backup.bat and just noticed it's missing my new files that have the old dates.

Take a look into Robocopy, I think you'll find it much more robust than xcopy to do what you are trying.

Here's an interesting one. Employee at work is running windows 7 on his laptop. We're on a multi domain environment. His location, he employs a Buffalo NAS for all of his documents. He has the NAS sync his folder to his laptop, and has chosen to make the folder available for offline use. That way when he goes home at night, and isn't connected to the network he can still access his files.

Now he runs into problems when he's at home, and say he accesses Document A in his offline folder. He makes changes to Document A, and tries to save. Simple Error message given that access is denied to do so. Items sync correctly, he just can't save anything. I haven't had much time to investigte it (I doubt he's got all of his files set to read only), but does anyone have any insight? I don't have W7 machine handy at work I can test, but I was able to modify my documents in my offline folder on XP and save them no troubles....

Hi this is my first post, I assume this is the right place for this topic.

I've encountered a very serious problem with Windows 7.

It's resetting the modified date on files when I move them.

I noticed this a couple of weeks ago when I moved the contents of my user folder to a different drive.

As a general habit, I used date modified as the sort order for my folders, so after moving everything, I went through the folders and set them up accordingly. Then I noticed that things were out of order and that a lot of the files had had their modified dates reset to the moment they were moved.

I'm mildly terrified of the idea that Windows 7 is capable of pulling a stunt like this.

Does anyone know what causes this, how I can fix the dates that have been changed (it's over 2,000 files), and / or how to prevent this from ever happening again? Is it a bug? It has to be right?

G'day,

I think the Date Modified is referring to the change in folder structure, since you moved the folder to a new drive. You might be better off viewing your files in Explorer by enabling the Date Created, Date Modified and Date Last Saved options as shown in the image below.

You enable these by right-clicking on the Date Modified (shown as a red cross in the image below), and then selecting More... and scrolling down the list and selecting the options you want. Notice that in the image, these aren't neccessarily the same date.

Try that and see if it sets your mind at ease.

I'm concerned that a word file I have on my company's network has been modified by another individual and was wondering how I could pull a list of the individuals that have modified the file and the dates the modifications occurred. I know I can pull up the last person who modified the file and the date of modification via file properties, but the information isn't helpful since i continuously work on the file and am the last person who saved it. Any help would be appreciated.

It would be better if you asked the Admin at your company. Depending on the type of software the network runs on, the admin may be able to give you the info you seek. Otherwise if you are worried about someone else changing it, give everyone else read-only access (if they need to view it for any reason).

Hi,

Would anyone please be able to advise me how to use Windows 7 search to find all files on a PC that were created or modified after a selected time and date?

I can do this easily in XP but just cannot get this work in Windows 7.

Answer:Search For All Files Created or Modified After A Time & Date ?

If you have explorer.exe open, for eg. Computer. In the search bar at the top right of the window when you click on that A pop down will show and you can add "Date Modified + Size" filter.

I've recently noticed that my hard disk space is constantly getting lower for no reason - i tried turning off system restore, but the problem persisted. I also noticed some strange files and directories being created and modified at times when I've been away from my PC - files like ezsidmv.dat, mostly in System 32, which are probably malicious, though neither AVG free nor Malwarebytes' Anti Malware, which I both use, seem to detect them as such. They haven't been able to find any viruses lately, but my memory keeps getting lower, and new files keep appearing. I'm not sure how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I created some files between lets say 15 and 19 August, not sure of the year, in the last 10 years, how can I find them in win7 64bit pro ?

I am hoping to avoid doing a search each time for a specific year, can one search on date disregarding year ?

Furthermore find only has a filter date modified, it says add a search filter yet doesnt have a list of choices, where are other filters to be found ?

In all, it seems archaic compared to winXP explorer search, as I cant see the options that I was used to.

Hello,
Is there a way to force Windows Explorer (Windows 7 Premium) to display the proper dates in the "date modified" category? It's displaying the same date as in "date created". I've edited some of the files in that folder a few days ago but it still displays a 2008 date.

It used to be, you could just sort by modified in tile view and the tiles and folders would have the time stamp on the folder/file icon.It was standard in XP but I cant find a way to bring it back in Win 7.To clarify, "sort by Tiles" then arrange by modified.I need to be able to see the date modified on the files and folders in tile view when sorted by "date modified".Any help is appreciated...Googling brought me nothing :/

Please help with this question about file date-created VS date-modified in Windows 7.

Suppose a file is created at time1.

How come Windows7 reports "date created" as "time1" and "date modified" as "time2" where "time2" is a time earlier than time1?

See the attached file, "WindowsDateIssue201203061503.png", for an example.

Answer:file date-created VS date-modified where modified < created

If you (/your computer) have not played with system time:

That means that file is a copy of a file created earlier.

To confirm, find an old file and copy it to another folder/disc.
Check the dates.

This situation can also occur with some archives (depending on your settings).

I posted this thread in the Hard Drive section and they told me to move it here. I still feel it's a hard drive problem, but I may be wrong.

Yesterday I was on my computer looking at a friend's picture on Facebook, when I started getting a bunch of harddrive errors (Hard drive failure, and some others I believe). A program called Windows Repair popped up on my screen after it downloaded itself to my desktop (see pic). My computer ran the same after these messages kept popping up but when I went to click on my C Drive icon, it was completely empty. I had a external hard drive attached to my computer as well and it was empty too (Seagate 1.5TB). I noticed all of my shortcuts on my desktop looked subdued and I couldn't click on any of them. They even began to disappear! Also, when I would go to Start and All Programs, nothing was there. I ran some full malware scans and the Windows Repair program was gone for good. The malware was gone, but my hard drive problem was still there. I tried the 'stickied' thread's solution but nothing happened when I went to restart the computer. I did everything it said but it didn't work. Also, a Files Needed window keeps popping up saying I need SynTPCo2.dll (see attached pic).

It's hard to explain but I'll give it a shot. The files still exist but do not show up. If I can find a way to get to the programs they still work as if they're still stored on my computer there's just no wa... Read more

In windows file explorer I am wondering if its possible to list folder first then have the last accessed files right under the folders afterwords. I need to have the ability to see folders first , then last used / modified files. 

If i list folders first now, then the last accessed files comes down at the bottom.

Yesterday while backing up the Windows Registry I discovered that the backup files in C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP mostly have wildly incorrect dates.

The files and dates are:

rb000.cab Modified 5/10/30
rb002.cab Modified 3/9/05 (that was today's)
rb003.cab Modified 3/16/23
rb004.cab Modified 3/17/23
rb005.cab Modified 10/1/29

Also rbbad.cab, modified 3/8/05 (when I tried to restore the registry with a file I trusted).

I am sure that these files were made when we did time-forwarding for the Petz 3 game. Never mind that.

As I understand it, there are only five slots for registry backups, and these files with false dates are taking up four of the five.

Can I just delete them? Or will it cause confusion in the computer?

Here is what we have.

Our operating system is Windows 98. System memory is 128 MB. The computer name is UOW IV7. The motherboard is Asus CUV4X (I ISA, 5 PCI, 1 AGP Pro, 1 AMR, 3 DIMM, Audio) (I'm copying from the Everest Home screen. The hard disk, with 29291 MB, is a GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 47. The CPU is an Intel Pentium IIIE, 800 MHz (6 x 133).

I don't know how many more specs you would need to answer my question. If I need to give more information I will. Thanks so much for any help.

I would back up my registry to a disk then if something went wrong you have the physical backup to fall back I would suggest backing up settings incase you lose those as well.

Can someone please explain the difference between modified and accessed time? I don't understand why some changes to a file affect the modified time but not the accessed time, while other operations change one or both.

For instance, I've been updating the information in some of the FLAC (lossless music) files I have. Updating tag information affects the modified time and keeps the accessed time the same, yet updating the cover art changes the accessed time but keeps the modified time the same.

That sounds kind of weird, you might have a malware problem? Try a free malware sweeper and see if it picks up anything. If it doesn't, you may want to try doing a repair installation. This will wipe out all of the system files and replace them. It will replace any system files altered by malware or adware but it will not fix the malware or adware problem. *edit* The problem will present itself again if it is malware. It will leave your applications intact, but you will have to reapply updates. So, as good practice, backup all of your important files and go for it. If you want a guide on how to do a repair install, you can find something online through google.com/microsoft.

Last edit: I believe there is a problem with IE7 if you're attempting to do a repair install. If you have SP2 and IE7 is installed you need to uninstall it and replace it with IE6. Otherwise, after the install IE will not work. So, if you have IE7 installed, do what I said. If you have IE6 you're ok and don't have to worry about anything.

I want to copy the contents of pen drive to E drive. The pendrive drive is F. Now i want all the folders and files to have the same date it was as in the pen drive, when i stored .
Normally when i copy, all the files retain original date but folders get todate. Meaning less if date specific creation of folder is needed.
I heard that robocopy feature in command would give me a way to it. Reading in microsoft or in other forums, including in this forum would not solve my problem. as it is total technical in nature of using switches in command.
My specific need is date of the folders and folder in the pendrive F to be copied to E: in one new folder, say Eendrive copy .
Dcopy is one of the sub command. I want total command for this . There may be experts in this commands. Please let me know , how to accomplish this. The command help of microsoft only know to the tech experts, who knows all /\ switches. As a newbie to this subject, i do not know how to issue the command prompt command.

My Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit RTM has started to create folders with random names, and containing 2 .VDM files with random filenames, in the root folder of one of my harddisks. I have 3 harddisks + one external disk on my system. The folders created looks like this: "87354cbb7447d1e4e6e99030a4e1eaae", and contains 2 .VDM files like this: "A30368C8-33E2-4E89-8CE5-9CA07F5DD706mpasdlta.vdm", and "B013DC5F-E3CE-4706-9FD1-00452FB1C4EEmpavdlta.vdm". I need administrator rights to access these folders. Just wondering why they are created, and if I can delete them safely. EDIT: I just checked the owner of the folders, and the owner is "SYSTEM". TIA

I have Security Essentials and I just performed an update and the random directory was created with the vdm file in it. So I believe that they are virus definition files associated with Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft should patch this and make the files hidden to elevate any confusion.

I created backup CDs, over the years, of all of my digital photos, digital music, and general interests of mine. Now that I have Internet Explorer 7 installed on my desktop and my laptop, every CD I try to read has this same problem - all of the folders and each of the files in the folder, have a blue (with gold band) icon in the bottom lefthand corner of each. Why is this happening?

As little a problem as this may seem, it is bugging the heck out of me!! I'd like to know why this is happening and what can I do to change it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've got a virus or spyware or something like that. Some of the files are being created in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and being called win1.tmp, win1a6.tmp, win2.tmp, win18c.tmp.exe and so on. Usually my virus scanner picks up all the executables, but that really isn't helping me because it still hasn't removed the root of the virus. I'm also getting several viruses in C:\Documents and Settings\Kathy\Local Settings\Temp but these usually take much longer to produce. About every ten minutes, I'm getting a random popup from Internet Explorer which I'm positive is a virus because I'm using Firefox right now. I've scanned with Spybot and it found several things but one of them was called Virtumonde and whenever I rescan with Spybot it finds it again. This virus is in the registry. I have also scanned with AVG Anti-Spyware and that found Adware.Generic somewhere in the registry, but I have only gotten one chance to scan with that. Right now, I'm scanning with Ad-Aware 2007 and it has found 18 infects so far, but I think most of them are the temporary files.

I tried doing a bit of searching, but this one seems to be a new one here.

If I'm running an NTFS-formatted Windows XP Home system (i.e. no audit trail enabled, as that's a Pro-only feature), and a drive is compressed, would this compression change the "last accessed" date of the files it is compressing? Technically, it has to access the files in order to compress them, so it'd seem to make sense. I don't have a spare drive here to test this with, so I figured maybe someone here would know.

After the initial compression of the drive compression and decompression only takes place when you access the file so the access date should be the same. Also keep in mind when using compression the file must be decompressed before using it. You must retain enough free space on the drive to use it uncompressed which limits the amount of space you actually save using compression. Also as a final though compression puts a big performance hit on read and write times. With the relatively inexpensive storage media available using compression on anything other than backups IMHO isn't worth the performance hit.

My computer recently became infected with "wmiprvse.exe" that was cought (and suppressed?) by Zone Alarm Suite. Anyway after the first format it was still present. So with the second format I flashed the Bios as well. I do have two drives on this pc and both formated.

My question is when you right-click>properties I was under the impression that the creation date of the file is never going to change, and if it was, this was a sign of a virus etc... So with the current above cirumstance my wmiprvse.exe file has a creation date of 2007, modified date of 2002, and accessed on 2007. Does this mean there is still a problem? How can the system create a file in 2007 and modify it in 2002. Thanks in advance!

Got some weird stuff going on, zip files in system.ini shell, date modified ona bunch of old downloads is now 9-11-01 all at 6:37 pm. Now there are several program files with dates changed to 911 too, printmaster, notepad.exe ect.
Have run McAfee and Housecall, no virus' found.
Getting a self extractor header corrupt message at boot, because of the zip file in .ini Ran CIH_kill with no results. Also had one instance of the fleeing icons on the desktop like what Berhle described earlier. Any ideas, am on my way to get Norton 2002. Thanks DC

Can I copy or move folders with Windows XP without changing the modified dates like I can with Windows 2000? This has always been convenient when moving data to a new hard drive or new computer. Even using Windows 2000 to move the folders to my Windoes XP system across the network updates the modified dates. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Answer:Modified vs. Created

The file modified and created dates are simply an additional text string included in the file.  Upon being created the file should have the created date set and when saved should have the modified date updated.  It is easy for a user to manipulate these values if they really wanted to.  Also, many programs may not include the functions to update this information.  If you are using something like Microsoft Word, it should for the most part keep track of a document, but if you open it with any other 3rd party software it could mess up those values.
I wouldn't worry about the dates too much anyway, as they are only somewhat reliable.

I had to do a system restore and before doing this I backed up all my music to discs and then put all back on the computer when done, made sure everything was there and then tossed the discs in the trash (stupid, I know).

All the songs are there, but my issue is that they all now have a created and modified date of yesterday (the day I put them back on) I need to know if there is any way of getting the original "created on" date back.

And if I cant get it back that way on the system will one of the many mp3 management softwares out there show the actual created on date? I always make playlists of the most recent songs I get and now I have no idea which songs those were.

That's the result of not setting your burner program to use current date versus the created date. Once the dates are changed, it's a very slim chance of getting them back unless the MP3s themselves store the dates within them - which is also rare.

I have been trying to get this done for Windows 10 and wow is driving me crazy. It seems that the tweaks I find work for some folders but not for folders there I have photos which is exactly where I want to be able to do this.
I always have to go through the options and add the Date Modified first. Gets very annoying so maybe some expert out there can tell me how to do this?

Is it possible to manually change the created and modified time from a PDF file that you can see in right-click, properties, tab details? I know how to create a copy with all possible properties removed so the copy will change the old time to the current
but I want to change it manually.

The solution already found. You need to change your computer clock and then right-click on the file, properties, details, click on "Remove Properties and Personal Information" and select "Create a copy with all possible properties removed"

I m using Linux Red Hat Enterprises (RHEL 6) and created a WebDav share using the Apache. I can connect to the share via Windows Explorer and copy and directly modify files. Seems pretty fast too. But..

When I look at the share in Windows Explorer, its shows the modifed date as the created date and the created date as the modified date. I have confirmed this by logging into Linux shell as well as via WinSCP.

I am thinking there is a mapping someplace in Apache that may be able to fix this, but then when I view the share with a browser (http://servername/share) the modified date is correct.

See attached image. Note date modified is older than create.Any ideas?

Apologies for the title - I tried to encompass my problem.





Basically, it's this:

I have a drive that I need to copy all the data from and move to a larger drive (1TB DAS moved to a 6TB NAS device). I need to preserve the folder's date created and (if possible) modified attributes, as the data being copied is a WIP folder for a big CGI
project, and it's important to be able to track and find specific info/folders via date created... essentially the job is ongoing for another 6/7 months.

So, normal copy/paste won't do... thanks to this forum :) I've used Xcopy and worked out how to migrate the data and keep the all the new/copy folder's date created and modified attributes in line with the original/source. 

Meaning I can make a perfect copy with folder dates that match.

However (and this is where I am head scratching), as soon as any new data is added into the copy folder, it's attributes change... not only the folder's modified date (which I was expecting) but also the date created folder.

This is a problem as the folders will have new data added to them on an ongoing basis... but, as both modified and created dates change to the time the new file is added, it causes issues when finding specific nested folders via creation date.

Example: Copy folder (done today via Xcopy) shows creation and modified date as per the source of 11/12/2012. As soon as any file is added into that folder, it updates modified and creation to the time the file w... Read more

BTW - with the Xcopy, it was a 2 stage process. /s/e/k first then a copy over but using /d/t/e/k. Copying in the first pass and then overwriting the folders in the second pass (with the correct creation date).

Thanks for the Robocopy/mir tip... that will work for bulk copying the data... sadly, when it's on the NAS, any additions to the folder change the creation date. Pretty sure it's the NAS file system (or lack of compatibility).

Going to test some spurious data using some other DAS drives - as I think it's the NAS (as per Lacie's reply).

Now I need to find a NAS that'll handle NTFS.

But at least I feel I'm getting somewhere now - thanks :)

Well, I just upgraded to Office 2003 with Outlook 2003. My old Outlook 2000 worked fine. However with Outlook 2003, the Created and Received dates on Internet email that I get are backwards. Outlook shows the received date as the date inside the actual email (i.e., the creation date) and the created date with the time Outlook got it. Among other things, this has the effect of showing the email was received before it was created!

This behavior only started today when I installed Outlook 2003. Note, this behavior happens on both the old emails that Outlook 2003 imported from the previous version as well as new emails that it receives now.

I am running Outlook 2003 with SP2 and all the latest Microsoft updates (I did an update tonight).

Any ideas?

I have searched the Internet and as many forums as I can find with no results.

If you review the log for updates it should tell you what it did. In most cases the fine print says it needs to update the Windows Updater and it will close on it's own. If you wait a few minutes it should auto launch again on its own unless something prevented it or it ran into an update issue on it's own.Yes, it's normal behavior

This may sound like a dumb question, but no matter how many times I move/rename/recreate a folder for my music files I can never arrange the files inside by [last] Modified. When I right click, I only get the option to arrange by artist/track/duration/etc. whereas I can usually arrange by Name/Size/Type/Modified. How can I fix this?

When I used XP Pro I used to download images from the net to a folder on my desktop which I could then sort by "Date Modified" (when viewing"Details"). I could then go back to thumbnail views and the most recently downloaded file was at the top of the display.

I do not appear to have this column in Windows 7 and my downloads are all over the place - and hence hard to find.

How do I restore this function please?

So, your downloads are going to various folders? Are you using IE to download, or what? Win 7 has a standard Downloads folder. Normally, downloads initiated via web browser would go to that folder unless you've designated a different location. Please explain your situation in more detail.

I have an 80gigabyte seagate drive partitioned into 2 (C & D) drives 1 for the OS and the remaining for backup. I am using windows XP home. Drive D reports it is 45% used but when you click to see the contents of the drive, there are no folders or files, in explorer and in DOS. I know there are files that I backed-up in there but now I cannot access them. Just 3 weeks ago I accessed the files and folders but this week, windows explorer's "My Computer" reports the drive as with content but you cannot see any files or folders. Tried to use also DOS but to no avail. Is there a solution or cause for this mysterious behavior?

Help! I am using a Seagate Central 4TB NAS drive attached to my router via Ethernet. It has been working fine so far for all kinds of file activities. But whenever I modify a file in one of its folders, the creation date for the file also updates and is
changed to the same time as the new modified date.
Maybe relevant details:
I can move/copy folders to the drive and they maintain their created dates.
It happens for both a private user share on the NAS and for the Public share on it.
It happens for at least image files and text files.
I am able to edit files across two computers on the network just fine, the create date stays the same.
This happens from a new Windows 10 machine and Vista machine both.
I notice sometimes the date created seems to stay same until I access the file the next time.
I can't update the NAS firmware because of error.

If it could be a permissions problem, I have been unable to change it from:
Everyone: Special Permissions only
nobody (Unix Group\nobody): Special Permissions only
nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup): Special Permissions only
(Those were there automatically, they are not something I manually put there. I get "Access is denied" whenever try to add permissions or change ownership.)

I have Googled many phrases of this problem far and wide and come up with nothing. I really need to save the original create date because that's how I sort them in programs like Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa. Does anyone know what's goin... Read more

So far, I found a software that is able to change this called 'Attribute Changer' but it only changes the date modified in the folder and, when you go into the actual word application > file > info, the date created and modified are not changed. hi, recently i modified the icon of an .exe file using Resource Hacker 4.2.5

everything seemed ok, except while in Win 7 windows Explorer, under TILE VIEW, the icon of the .exe file and also the thumbnail of that file at the bottom of the window, shows the old icon. if i rename the file to something else again, then it changes to the new icon. but when i rename it back to it's original, it reverts to the old icon.

i believe this is an OS application issue, in particular inside Windows Explorer for Win 7, not the modification process cos i don't have this problem when i copied the same modded file to windows 10, in all win explorer views.

i have rebooted, done a hard boot, cleaned registry with pctools & ccleaner, but no change to this file's condition. Any ideas?

Running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1 on an HP desktop.  I happened to have my Documents library sorted by date modified, to keep the folder I was using at the top of the list.  Suddenly 6 random folders show up at the top of the list, all with a date and time stamp of 8/23/14 2:27pm.  I had not touched any of these folders, and I noticed this about a half hour after that timestamp.
I am concerned because one of the folders had bank statements and the other some Social Security application information. The other 4  folders were just benign like recipes.  Also, in that time while I was working, I had recently saved a file to Google drive, to make it available to me from other computers.  That file was not in any of these 6 folders.  Unfortunately, I do share my Documents library on my Homegroup (and I have since changed that...)
What could change the date modified on those folders? It seems like more than a coincidence that this happened right after I saved a file to Google drive, and that two of the folders had information that I wouldn't want to be public. 
I ran a virus scan (Windows Sec Essentials) and Malwarebytes and nothing shows up.  By the way, I have hundreds of folders in my Documents library, so just having 6 of them change is weird.

I understand that by right clicking on the sorting bar you can choose and add dozens of ways to sort your files. How do I apply one (Date Accessed) not just for one folder, but for on the folders on my drive?

1. Click the Start Menu Orb and then Search for cmd. Once that comes up Right-Click cmd.exe and SelectRun as administrator.
2. The UAC prompt will appear… Click Yes!
3. Now in the cmd prompt, Type in “ fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 0 “ and Press Enter.
4. Restart your PC for changes to take affect.

After restart
1. Switch the Window view to Details.
2. Right-Click category bar and Click More…
3. On the next window Scroll down and Check the box for Date Accessed and then Press OK.
That’s it! Now when you do Windows Searches it will pull up and show the Date accessed category.

Good evening all.. Anyone know how to tell when a folder was last opened by time and date? In folder properties it will tell you the date it was created or altered, but I need to know when it was last viewed if possible. (I think I have someone snooping when I'm not around).

I purchased a lenovo edge 14 back in march of this year, however the warranty status shows less than 130 days remaining in warranty. there appears to be no way to correct this on the lenovo website, how do I go about correcting this? thank you.

i dunno if this is the right forum, its kinda confusing for some topics..when i download music, and then go to find it to play it, i usually arrange it by date, to easily find whats new.however, for some reason, my music ( and maybe other files, dunno) has had all of their dates and times changed. my pc clock seems to be fine, however.. any thoughts?and no, i'm not talking about a few days.. i mean like a few years, i have a few songs that now say 1994, when i've only had this pc for a year

EML files are saved in My Doc and URL files in My Favorite in my Vista Home Basic laptop. However, when I try to sync them by SyncBack with USB, it prompts me to overwrite them nearly every time because the modified date/time (for EMLs & URLs) and even size (for URLs) are updated! Actually they are the same files but Vista (or something in Vista) changes them from time to time!!! When I open a folder with Windows Explorer, sometimes I can see the modified date/time of all EMLs inside update automatically. Sometimes one of them updates after I right-click it and view its property.

I usually backup important URLs and EMLs in My Doc. Correct date/size is very important for me and the sync software to distinguish new and old files.

I never have this problem before when using Win XP, IE6 & Outlook Express with my old labtop. But when I upgrade IE6 to IE7 or 8, the same URL problem comes to Win XP. The date and size of some old URLs are changed without my notice!

DIAGNOSIS: Windows Vista changes every .eml & .url file to current time and date. Is Microsoft intentionally update the date (size) in Vista? Why?

NO SOLUTION up till now: I tried some suggestions found over the internet but none works:-

After changing any .cpp file in Visual Studio, the last modified time stamp for the file's folder
IS NOT updated. What's happening ?
However when I change a Word (.docx) file, the last modified time stamp for the file's folder
IS updated ! How come ?

I bought my X60s in Denmark on the 13th of march 2007 with a 3 years warranty. When I look up my warranty status it says that the machine has a three years warranty, but it also says that the warranty expiration date is 10th of may 2009. This is wrong because the warranty should run until 13th of march 2010. How can the date be corrected?

I am running Vista on a Lenovo laptop. I have a ymail account. The date on my computer is correct. When I send emails from ymail, the dates are incorrect, sometimes they are even in the future! How is this possible?

In Add/Remove programs my dates and times are wrong, some programs I may have used recently say last used 2003. In my program files some of the installation dates are wrong also. The date and time in the right corner of the tray are right. This is not earth shattering, but this is my first post and I have lots of questions coming later. Thanks.

I really don't know how windows keeps track of dates in Add/Remove, but I've never found them to be accurate. For programs that I use daily the last used date is usually in 2005. Windows also says that I use these daily programs "occasionally", which means I run it "sometimes". I would just ignore the information provided.

I have problem, recently all new folder are created optimized for video content with big pictures and such. How can I fix that so they are created as normal folders, because this is driving me nuts having to change this for every new folder.

Hello everyone,I tried looking around the net but cannot find what i am looking for. I need a program that activate folders on certain dates. For example i run a restaurant that changes its menu cycle every month. the staff need to know what the menu specs are currently active for that month. All menu specs are put in folders for each month. Is there any program i can use that the folders can automatically trigger itself to show on the desktop while archiving the previous month untill that month comes along again? it has to been simple program that the folders activate itself. please help thanks

I want to view all my files the same way. I want to be able to see the file sizes and the date modified so I can easily sort to find things. I don't care that I can move the cursor over a file to see it's size. That is stupid and time consuming. Please help.

Client of mine has got NAS storage (LACIE D2 Network) for a backup purpose at central office.
Private ip address 192.168.0.50 for LACIE D2 Network was mapped to a public ip address for the router which is 23x.45.5x.7x.
The remote PC (at remote location) uses Free SynBack to do a backup via FTP (username and password and public ip address 23x.45.5x.7x used) option to the LACIE D2 Network ( at central location).
I do not have any concern about the backup because it is working fine without any problem.
But when I type in a browser ftp:// 23x.45.5x.7x,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I can access all folders and files ,,,,,means any one can access those files and folders.

How can I protect those files , because I could not find an option through NAS storage configuration to protect that from being accessed by anonymous ??

Hi. I'm thinking about repairing Windows 7Home Premium 32bit with the DVD, because of BSOD, but I hesitate.

I first need to know if the backup folder called "Windows.old" will be a COPY (keeps Date Modified but updates Date Created) or a CUT (simply moves all folders to an other, thus doesn't change Date Created). Thanks!
So of course, only those who have ever reinstalled Windows 7 may know the answer. If you don't know but have reinstalled Windows 7 at least once, please spare 30 seconds to check, simply find a file like a picture or music that you had before the reinstall, and see in the bottom bar of explorer if its Date Created is the original or the reinstall date. You can also click Display tab in Explorer, then Sort by > Others > check "Date Created", > OK > Click display again > Sort by > Date Created. Don't mistake with Date Modified, I know the original Date Modified is kept upon copying, but it will update if you modify the file obviously. Please be honest and double check, losing 5.9 years old dates of my past would be heartbreaking, like mixing the pages of my diary!

Date Created is very important to me (and is underrated because it's not the default sorting option unlike Name/Type/Date Modified) because my computer is 5.9 years old, now has thousands of files and folders and it's easy to find them back and organize them with Date Created sorting if I didn't write tags or description in the file name.

I had a lot of issues with W10 Mobile on my Lumia 1520. I did the hard reset as recommended. Everything is working a lot better, aside from having to reinstall all my apps. One major issue I am having is that all my photos are showing up in the wrong month and year. Example: Today I have taken no photos but under the August 24th date I have over 25 photos. All these photos are ones I took last year but are now marked for today. I think what is happening is Onedrive is adding these photos to my phone which changes the Date Modified date. This problem created a huge mess of my albums. All the photos I took since the reset are correct. All my other phones ive taken over 3 years are now scattered across 2015, some 2014, and some 2013. Has anyone else come across this issue and found a solution?

Please help with this question about file data created VS date modifed in Windows 7.

Suppose a file is created at time1.

How come Windows7 reports "date created" as "time1" and "date modified" as "time2" where "time2" is a time earlier than time1?

See the attached file, "WindowsDateIssue201203061503.png", for an example.

Good question, but it does not effect the performance of the computer.
An explanation could be the DLL file could be updated via a recent Windows update and it was last modified date was inherited from the previous file that has been overwritten.

I'm trying to create a set of directories that show art from various eras. I want them to appear in chronological order. Thus, I want the BC years to proceed backward to 0 and then forward again after AD. I've tried putting negative numbers in front of the dates but this doesn't seem to help. Any ideas?

This is Operating System Abuse!

File/folder names in Windows are alphanumeric (plus a few additional characters) and alphanumerically sorted which means a sequence of numbers from 0 to 12 goes 0,1,10,11,12,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. "Negative" figures -12 to -1 go-1,-2,-3,-4,-5,-6,-7,-8,-9,-10,-11,-12, and BC always comes after AD. Not at all what you want.

What you need is a database application to manage the chronology and the behind-the-scenes data storage.

If it's like any other FTP server you should be able to disable the anonymous account. Although honestly I haven't touched FTP in about a billion years.

I just realized many of my mails are an hour off from the correct time of receiving, after I imported my mails to Outlook 2003 from Outlook Express.

Okay, so recently, my dad's laptop started goofing up. It is a Toshiba Satellite P305. I currently have a HijackThis log. Any... odd entries?

Here are some error messages I get:
On boot, I get the following error message: "The following file or directory is corrupt: \Program Files\Toshiba\SmartFaceV. Please run CHKDSK to repair." So I ran CHKDSK. It still does it, so idk?

Hello,

Is there any way to display the dates of files/folders as "today" "yesterday" etc. instead of the full date? Windows only ever displays, for example, "23/10/2014 5:12 pm" regardless of how much I expand the date column. On a Mac, the date changes from the short format to a longer format as the date column is changed, and obviously has the far more user-friendly relative dates. Is it possible to get this behaviour on Windows 7? I'm guessing not, as an internet search for "windows 7 use relative dates" does not bring up anything remotely useful.

Answer:Display relative dates in Windows 7 folders

These are two different issues. One is the display mode of the date, and the other ("relative") is a data element.

For the 'display mode' of the date, you can set it for dates displayed in Windows Explorer in Preferences. I don't beleive dynamic display is an option.

Windows has the ability to display the "Last Updated" date. But then you'd have to know today's date to calculate the 'relative' date (oh, the horror).

I have been using Directory List & Print (and Karen's Directory Print) for several years, to print lists of files in various directories (especially media). In order to keep track of all my media files, which are scattered amond numerous drives and many different folders, I create shortcuts for each file, then paste them into a single "master list" folder. This way, I have one place I can quickly turn to for up to date info. Directory List & Print (free version) works quite well for sending the current list of files (actually - list of shortcuts) in the "master folder" to MS Word, for printing and formatting. I just recently tried to sort my file list by date, in order to resolve a problem I was having with keeping track of when certain files were created. When I tried to sort the Directory List & Print order by "date", all files in the master folder were shown as the same date (the current date = 10-20-15), even though each file in the directory shows the actual date the file was originally created. I cannot figure out why this app (Dir ListPrint) assigns the current date to each file, instead of the correct date. I have tried several other third party directory print progams and the result is the same with each. I have also tried the DOS command to create a txt list within the master folder - same result. Hmmm............

The Everything search engine will find all files matching your stated search string and then allow you to sort them by creation date.

Below is a screen shot of a bunch of Frank Sinatra mp3s from various folders as searched for in Everything. I then sorted them by "creation time", newest to oldest.

You can also export the search results as a text file.

Or highlight some or all of the results and paste them to some folder--which would copy the actual files, not just their names.

It's a great tool that you might be able to adapt to your purposes.

Hi, when I download quotes into my Q2000 and go to portfolio view for the curent day, the prices run a day ahead of the actual date, I went into the edit price history, and they are corrrect there, just not in portfolio view? How can I correct this????
