Booting installation from external harddrive (iphone?)

Question: Booting installation from external harddrive (iphone?)

Hey guys!

I finally got tired of Vista so I have decided that this be the day that I get windows 7. The computer is backed up and ready. With the small problem of having something to boot it from. I have an iso of Windows 7 Ultimate that I want to install.

I have no dvds available. The largest usb drive I have is 2gb. I do have a 1.5TB external drive with ntfs but it's almost full at the moment so formatting it is not an option. Also I have a jailbroken iPhone 4 which I've read is possible to turn into an usb drive.

And here is my canundrum. I read something about shrinking a drive but I must admit I didn't quite understand it. I have about 200gb spare on my external harddrive, is there any way of making a partition of it to boot from without screwing up the rest of the harddrive?

Also there are a couple of different ways into turning the iPhone into an external harddrive, but I suppose it's a very bad idea to start changing the file systems of a partition in order to make it bootable?

Is there any way of making this happen today? I really just want to make this happen. Any and all help is much, much appreciated!

Edit: I tried using the external harddrive as it is and extract the ISO to the root, but I get the ntldr is missing error, which is really what brought about all this chasing around for a solution.

Edit 2: The computer I have is a Lenovo computer and it comes with this 20gig partition of whatever's on there. Going to try and boot the installation from there.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Booting installation from external harddrive (iphone?)

Really go out and buy a DVD (or a pack of them) or a USB thumb big enough to hold the OS ISO.

I've been using a Hewlitt Packard Compaq 8510p running Windows Vista.  A couple of days ago the computer shut down. No power.  So, I used a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter to hook up the drive to my Lenovo T420. i can access the harddrive this way, but I want to boot into it.  I press F12 on start up and am able to select the USB drive with the harddrive on it, but the computer takes a couple of minutes and theen boots from the system drive instead. is there anything I can do to boot from the usb?  The harddrive is a to Toshiba SATA  MK3261GSYN. 320GB

Its a 250GB My Book Essentail harddrive and it wont install. I plug it in and it makes the 'ding' sound but straight after it makes two 'ding' sounds. The harddrive doesnt show up in 'My Computer' but does in the 'DEvice Manager' but has yellow extimation mark on it. So i go to instal it by right clicking it and install driver from device manager , it goes through the installation but then at the end of it it says:

''An Error occured during the instalation of this device:
The driver installation file for this device is missing
a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written
for windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor.''

Whats all this about?
how can i edit the INF?

Any help?

(i hope i explained my problem clearly enough)

Answer:USB External Harddrive Installation Problem

Odd error. I looked around and if I searched right, that is usually a problem with CD/DVD drives. Did the drive come with a disk? There is a chance that formating the drive might help. Looks like Windows can see it, but not access it. (a guess).

You might try this: http://majorgeeks.com/Western_Digital_Data_Lifeguard_Tools_d2855.html

See if that will give you any info on the drive.

Okay, not sure where to post it, but I figured it'd be underneath the hardware section.
Currently, i've been buying and selling laptops for an income. I've been using a USB pendrive to install windows 7 on pretty much whatever I come across.

Well, I tried to get it to where I could install windows XP from the pendrive, but I was having horrid issues with it, so I gave up, and just resorted to using either an external DVD drive (for the netbooks/tablets)

I'm pretty sure I could figure out how to make WIN 7 install from the external hard drive, by marking a partition as active and copying the setup files, and whatever else. I know it entails quite a few lines of command prompt, there's plenty of guides online, and that's how I managed to set up my flash drive to install 7 for me....

I'm about to order an external HD just so I can carry around much needed programs, and everything else, so I can do on the fly repair work if needed...

Here's what I need help with. I need to be able to install WINDOWS XP and 7 From this hard drive, and I have no CLUE how to go about doing it, for.. i guess you'd call it a dual boot installation????
I just googled around for awhile, but it really was no use, found how to put just 7 alone on it, but I need XP as well..
If you need any clarification just ask, I don't mind explaining. Really, if there's a guide out there already that has please link me, i'd appreciate it. I'd pre... Read more

Ok, I have an external hard drive (150GB) which is partitioned into two parts. One partition , about 145gb, is data and files of my own. Then there is an extended partition at 5gb in size, which contains windows xp installation files. What I did was take my windows xp cd, make an ISO, and then extracted the iso and put the files into the extended partition of my external usb hard drive.

The computer I want to install to has a cd drive that is not working and thus i cannot install windows xp from a cd. The BIOS of the computer DOES support booting from a USB device.

I have partition magic software and have used it to create the 5gb extended partition on the usb external drive. However, I don't know how to configure anything so that it will acutally know to boot from this partition and what files to use to start the installation.

Any ideas!!?

Answer:booting a windows XP installation from an external hard drive

The partition on the external drive that contains the installation files needs to be an active partition in order to boot from it.

Personally, I would install a working CD drive. They are quite inexpensive these days.

Hello,

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Pat

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

The other day my Seagate expansion usb drive started showing "hollow" files and files were going missing.
I found that if I unplugged my iphone from the computer and replugged in the Seagate drive all the files would show up again and have all the data they were supposed to have (ie video files would not just say their size, but would also play their content.)

Now it seems like which ever device is plugged in first gets priority.
..so if the iphone is plugged in and then I plug the drive in it says "unknown usb device" and wont mount. I've now gotten the Iphone to load up while the Seagate drive is plugged in but it still causes the Seagate drive to do that weird hollow/missing files thing again.

is it possible the usb ports are suddenly interfering with each other? - It was working fine for about 2 weeks (new iphone)
Has anyone experienced this?

Hi everyone!
I have a problem thats pinging the **** out of me:
i am building a backup system so if this one crashes i can use it, but, it seems the biggest harddrive spare i have is an old "fujitsu MPE304AE 8.45GB" that doesnt seem to want to boot.
Every time i have it in a system (ive tried 3) it does the BIOS tests, then when it should go onto listing hardware IRQs the system freezes dead.
Thus it means i cant boot a CD or anything.
Any clue on what it could be, please post your ideas/suggestions here.

Thanks, func_337.

Answer:Harddrive not booting

Have you been able to go into bios? If so does it show your hard drive. Are your jumpers in the right place Slave/Master?
Is the drive making alot of noise? Is the drive formated?
Have you tried to put it on its own cable if you have a spare IDE slot? Thats all I can think of at the moment.

Answer:Harddrive Booting.

Just a few questions.

1) When the hard drive did work were there any other hard drives attached?

2) Is your hard drive displayed in BIOS, if not what is displayed?

3) Is your CD drive set to boot before the hard drive in your BIOS?

4) Does your hard drive plug into the motherboard, or an add-on card?

Hello everyone.

So I bought a new Hitachi Deskstar 2 SATA-600 2 TB (3,5'') harddrive yesterday. (I had a WD 320 GB harddrive before changing to the 2TB.)

And now, my computer takes maybe 4-5 minutes to show the boot screen (the screen that first appears when you boot your computer, often a green, blue or black one). And while the computer boots up, I can hear this ticking noise from the fans. Demonstration (the best I can): UUUUMM....UUUUUMMM.... UUUUMM.... and so on. But when it finally boots (when the boot screen comes up) the fan-noise stops, and goes back to the "normal" noise.

But my computer is working fine otherways. My computer is not slow other than the startup, and every program or game is working perfectly fine.

I think maybe it have something to do with the size of the harddrive? Could there be problems changing from a 320GB to 2TB?

Hello again, I had another problem a few days ago, but fixed it.
But now I am getting this strange behaviour.

PC:
OS: Windows 7 32-bit
Mobo: ASUS P8P67-M Pro
CPU: i7-2600K
RAM: 2 x 2GB Kingston
Hard disk 1: 300GB Barracuda
Hard disk 2: Old 250GB SATA 1 generation
Optical Drive 1:Standard DVD writer
Optical Drive 2:Standard DVD reader

Problem:
When I boot (EFI Bios) I am automatically transfered to the EFI Bios screen, reason being it's not able to detect my hard disks, when booting. But once in the "Advanced" set up screen I go to the boot priorities and only see my optical drives and USB drives. I do not see my hard disks.

But if I go to the boot override screen I see my two hard disks and can boot from there.

So how come it won't boot from them at the start and why can't I put them in the boot priority field?

Answer:Not booting auto from harddrive

Hi Markus,

Is this a recent problem? What has changed between the time it could boot up successfully and now? What version of the EFI BIOS do you have?

Regards,
Golden

So, I recently got an external enclosure for my old 2.5 hd and recently went to boot it only to find that I crashed every time I tried. Do you think this is because it has the same vista as my new hard drive? In which case I guess that's fine, I just want to rule out my own error or something wrong in bios.

I can browse the hd's documents while booted into my other harddrive so in this case it isn't a problem if I can't boot from it because of vista activation.

thanks.

Answer:Crashing when booting from usb harddrive

First, I wouldn't try booting any normal Windows install from a USB drive because if it even worked, the performance would be horrid. Second, it is probably carshing because it isn't booting off the same controller as before (I'm guessing this was cloned).

If you absolutely, for some unique reason, must boot from an external drive, switch to an eSATA drive from the same controller as your primary internal drive.

My HP Pavillion dv5 1095eo recently started freezing at the HP boot screen, before it tries to boot from CD. I found out that the problem is in the HDD, because if i removed the HDD and turned the computer on it got past the HP boot screen and just said unable to find a bootable partition.

Now i could boot from a CD or DVD. I think it would solve the problem if i wiped the HDD, but the computer dosent respond to it if i plug it in after i booted the windows setup disc. I also tried with Ubuntu 8.10 with same result.

Any ideas?

It has been working fine until today when I installed a new Hard Drive. I am 97% positive I didn't fry anything. Well I just built this computer about two months back, no problems. A few weeks ago someone gave me a dvd-rom drive, and today I got around to installing it, plugged everything in, etc etc. Now for the problem, whenever I boot up, it stopped booting up from the internal hard drive, and says its booting up from the drive I just put in. So now to get my computer booted all the way, as soon as the computers on I have to spam F12 to get to the boot menu and manually boot from the internal hard drive. Im not sure what they are labeled under but when I bring up the menu it comes up like this

__________: WDC (my external hard drive)
__________: Maxtor (internal hard drive)

Any help is very much appreciated!

Answer:Not booting from internal harddrive

Somewhere in the bios is a listing for First Boot, Second Boot and Third Boot device.
Set your first boot device to the hard drive you want to boot from.

If you ever need to boot from a floppy or cd you will have to come back in here, or use the F12 method to pick them.

Basically, I want to replace the iPhone's original headset microphone with another microphone, but still use the headphones to listen.Below is an image of the prototype structure (based on 2 existing products, but it is actually not working; probably due to impedance issue): Some clarifications on the image:item #5 - split point between microphone jack and headphones jack. item #4 - iPhone plug 3.5 mm item #3 - a microphone which for now is NOT working since the iPhone seems NOT to identify it (probably impedance issues - it's impedance about is about 650 Ohm) item #2 - simple headphones jack (any headphones with 3.5 mm plug can hook there) item #1 - microphone jack hooked to the external microphone I have for now. OK. My computer multi-boots to Windows 7 & 8 right now. 8 is on an SSD.

I am thinking about adding another HDD, moving 8 to the new HDD, and installing Windows 10 [Technical Preview] onto the SSD. If I disconnect the drives with 7 & 8 during the install, then add them to the boot menu after, can I make the computer boot to the HDD with 8, have that boot menu default to 8, with 7 & 10 as options, and if I make the computer boot off the SSD default to 10 with 7 & 8 as options?

Answer:Boot Menu & Multi-Harddrive booting

I am assuming that you have W7 & 8 installed using MBR style and they are both running 64 bit.
With Windows 8 running. Open Admin command prompt and type: bcdedit /export BCDbackup to save your current BCD. copy BCDbackup to somewhere safe. With the HD connected. Download Macrium Rescue disk from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxg...ew?usp=sharing and use: Rufus - Create bootable USB to create a bootable USB stick. then boot up your PC with it.On the first screen. Select Backup tab, select the SSD as source, click "Clone This disk", click next, select the HD as destination disk. Make sure you select the correct one.Shutdown. Disconnect the SSD and connect the HD to the cable that was connected to the SSD. set the boot priority to the HD in BIOS then reboot. If everything boot up as expected. Shutdown and connect the SSDBoot up Windows 10 TP installation media then select the SSD to install Windows 10
NOTE: delete all partitions from the SSD then click next.

Hope this helps.

I got a matching 200 gb hard drive for x-mas and when installing it I have some weird problems. So I had to IDE plugins on my motherboard. I have one cable which has my dvd burner on it that goes into one slot. Then I have the cable with both of my hard drives in the other slot. I made sure to set jumpers correctly and to make sure the master and slave drive used the right part of the cord. Then I booted up and windows tells me there is a major change in my harddrives so I have to register again. When I finish booting up I have no internet and my second (new) harddrive is not showing up.

So I test it many different ways. I have come to the conclusion that anything with the jumper setting of slave will not work, or anything in the slave plugin on the cord. This means that I can only have two IDE devices (two cords can only have a master on each one) which is lame cause I need my dvd drive and I really want both hard drives. Any suggestions?

Harddrives are Seagate 200GB IDE
Motherboard is MSI KT4AV
DVD is emprex basic dvd+-r

Answer:New Harddrive Installation

i actually got a 200gb seagate HD for x-mas too, and i had some problems with it, but i was making it my boot HD.

If you want it as your slave drive, make sure the correct IDE cables are in each drive, (you say u did), and that a jumper is in the main drive to make it master, and no jumpers are in the 2nd drive to make it slave, (you say u did). So, after that, if u can boot up on your main old HD, and your not seeing the new drive? (i think this is ur problem), you have to partition your new harddrive for it to be recognized to have any storage on it.

"Then I booted up and windows tells me there is a major change in my harddrives so I have to register again."
-This makes it sound like the drives wern't configured correctly with jumpers and IDE cables.

If you say the slave part of the IDE cable wont work, try gettin a new cable, or a cable you know worked before, and put it in there. You should be able to have 4 IDE devices for 2 cords. On each cord, a master/slave.

If your primary is fat 32 then you should have the slave as fat 32. Chech that you have set the jumpers to slave on the newly installed HDD..

I used an xp installation cd, it started up went thru a few checks then it started a partitiion screen, but only sae 133 gigs, i thought this was a problem then aborted the installation.I played around with fdisk for some reason, then, i then tried again but i was getting prompts like it couldn't find a hard drive and would prompt me to put a floppy disk in, anyways i had a old copy of win 98 and it asked no questions and formatted my hard drive and installed win 98. While in win 98 i put the winxp disk in and tried to upgrade, it recoognized the xp disk and asked for the product key, i entered the key, it did some checks and asked for a reboot, so i did, then got the blue screen of death saying unmountable boot volume....what do i do???help please??? it will still load win 98 with no problems thanks

Answer:s-ata harddrive installation help please

I am sorry I cannot give you any help on your specific problem, but I am trying to get my Raid working on a P4G8X motherboard.I was sold two Asus Dongles which change an ide to a serial ata drive,by the mobo supplier. They did not work.I got in touch with Asus support staff who said my board did not support the dongles. I am still trying to get another response from them, to tell me which serial ata drives are supported. So far I have not managed to get a reply. This may be similar to your setup, dongles are available, but will they work?Hope my experiences are of some help to you.

Evening people.

I am no unknown person in the computer area, have an educational background in it.
But I would like some help.

I have experienced this problem before. Computer just and roars with all the fans at 100% speed, hard drive spins up and everything starts.

BUT. I do not get any video signal and the computer does not boot.

I have read on countless forums and have not found any solution yet.
Have many ideas, but before I do anything with any project I would like to have someone else's opinion.

Hardware speccs:

PSU: Silver power PSU 600W
Motherboard: Asus P5N-D nForce-751i
Harddrive: Western Digital Caviar GP 500GB SATA2.
GPU: XFX GeForce 9800GTX
OS: Windows Vista

Answer:Computer starting, fans and harddrive running, but no booting.

Reset the CMOS, by removing the watch like battery for 30 seconds.

If that doesn't work, try only one stick of RAM.

I just recently got this drive a while ago its my first MAXLINE II from Maxtor. Thing is that I had got a pirated copy of windows without realizing it cause it was only $50. The guy said that I should be able to install it even though it was made by Dell with no issues. He then sent me a OEM copy with SP 3 which seemed to have been infected cause it will partiton off some of the drive during a good copy of windows install an wont see all of the 300 gb drive. I have fought to get it to work this far, I have used check disk and linux can see the whole thing without much fault. I dont want linux just xp an I hate to buy a new drive an make this one a slave if nothing else cause I dont really trust it so it would be a secondary backup if that should happen.

We keep getting this error messege when we try to install Windows XP on a new hard drive: 'NTLDR is missing'

Answer:Harddrive Installation Error

possible causes are as listed

1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source. (no OS installed)
2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS. (bios and or physical hard drive settings)
3. Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file. (with a new installation not really an cause)
4. Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file. (corrupt installation could cause this.)
5. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32. (if you formatted the hard drive and not just quick format this is not an option)
6. New hard disk drive being added.
7. Corrupt boot sector / master boot record. (corrupt installation also a cause for this)
8. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP. (new installation, probably not)
9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable. (new hardware? old hardware? possibly an issue)

When I try installing FC3 on my computer it works until it says that it can't detect my hardrive. It tells me to select a device and when I do and go on to partitioning the hardrive it would say that it could not detect the hardrive and to check my hardware. To be more precise, the error message is this "An error has occured-no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem" .
I have intel915 64 bit motherboard,SATA 80gb harddrive,2.8Ghz processor,512MB RAM.I left 8GB space for linux. In the rest space i'm currently running window xp service pack 2 and it does run properly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Harddrive Not Detected During Installation

The FC3 install kernel doesn't support your SATA controller. If you insist on using FC3 then you may be able to create some driver floppy or an install image with a newer kernel.. I'd recommend FC4 or some other newer distro instead.

Right.

Normally when I install windows XP on a SATA drive, it gives me no trouble whatsoever.

However, here's the case, with my sisters computer, it won't let me install windows XP on her SATA drive, and I can't figure out why.

The bios has been updated, and the motherboard (A7N8X-E Deluxe) i'm pretty sure has been updated as much as possible.

I even went through the trouble of downloading a tool from Seagate to directly configure the drive for Windows XP and it still won't install.

It keeps giving me the same message every time, that there is no hard drive for windows XP to be installed on.

I don't get it, does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:SATA Harddrive + XP Installation = No Go

on older boards like that, you need to press F6 during install to load SATA controller drivers from floppy before you can install Windows. Newer boards have these drivers built into bios and use some sort of IDE emulation.

alright just got a 250GB external hardrive.. well its scheduled to backup all my files tonight since i dont want it to slow down my computer right now because i do use it alot just wondering when everything is backed up.. can i turn the thing off?

Like common sense says i can turn it off but leave it pluged into my computer.. will this cause anything bad to happen? will my files all be there even if its off for like a month or more?

Just want to know because i dont want to put files on it and delete them here and then find out that they are no longer on the back up harddrive.

Answer:External Harddrive

yep, you can turn it off, unplug it, move it, etc with no problems. It only needs to stay plugged in and on if you are using automatic backup software.

My 2 year old computer has been freezing up and crashing lately so I'm going to be wiping the hard drive and starting over. I'm trying to back up all of my music and important files but I'm going to lose a lot. I would like to avoid this situation in the future but I'm not sure what is causing the problem.

I'm thinking of buying an external harddrive for files that I will want to keep for a long time (like music and school stuff) so that I can wipe the drive when it gets messed up and not lose everything. The guy at Bestbuy explained it in a way that made it sound like they were essentially uncorruptable but I'm assuming they have some major drawbacks or people would use them for everything.

Alternately, is there some kind of upgrade I can do on my computer (its a desktop) so that it will run better and I won't have to deal with wiping it at all? I'm not sure if I'd need RAM or memory or what.

If it helps, here's what I know about the machine:
it runs Windows Vista
HP Pavilion a6110n PC
64 X2 Dual-core processor
2048 MB system memory
320GB hard drive
i'm currently using up 115 GB

Thank you!

Answer:External Harddrive or more ram?

well, an external hard drive is nice to keep your stuff on like you said. theyre pretty reliable for the most part if you get a good one. you could add another GB of RAM if you want, but the 2GB you have now is pretty standard for older computers. you have a 2 year old computer which more than likely has a lot of crud on it that is slowing it down.

you should try to clean your computer first, and use operating system reinstalls as kind of a last resort if youre not able to clean your PC, or if there is just too much junk on it to make the time worth it.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650 - Try this. It's a link to a basic computer maintenance thread. give this a try before you decide to wipe out your hard drive.

Hello All,

I keep having an issue with my Maxtor My Touch 4 USB hard drive on my Windows 7 64 bit desktop (Dell XPS 8300). Randomly on power ups of my PC, this external hard drive is not recognized and shows as an "Unknown Device" under the USB controllers in Device Manager. (Please see screenshot attached) When I say randomly I mean one time I boot and the hard drive is there and it works perfectly, the next time I boot, it is not recognized.

To fix this issue, I can uninstall one of the two "USB Root Hubs", reboot, and the hard drive will reappear.

Why would this hard drive show correctly after one boot up and not another when nothing on the PC has changed? And how can I keep this from happening?

Thanks for your input.

Question: External Harddrive

I purchased an external hard drive (WD Essential, 500gb) that is used exclusively to create Macrium Reflect images for three different computers.

Computers are:
HP Laptop with Vista
Dell Desktop with Vista
Computer I built with Win7 as the OS

When I plugged in the external hard drive to each computer, it trys to install the external software. This worked no problem with Win 7. With the other two computers it says the external hard drive was NOT installed properly. However, I can see the drive in windows explorer on all the computers. I had no problem creating Macrium Images for each computer with Macrium.

I can restore the images on the Win 7 and the Dell computers without any issues.

The HP Laptop is causing me a problem. When the external drive is connected, it will NOT boot. It hangs up very early in the boot process with Macrium Rescue Disk in the CDrom. Without the external drive connected it boots from the rescue disk. WD techies were no help to solve the issue.

I did extensive reseach to solve this issue and I was told to boot into the bios and change something (I never could find out what to change).

If anyone has a clue I can use the help. Thank you.

Answer:External Harddrive

G'day Huffman,

I'm not sure if this will solve the problem, but with the BIOS setting......do you remember if you were told to look for an option called Legacy USB or something very similar to that?

The Legacy USB option is used to tell the computer, before any Windows drivers boot, that there is a USB keyboard and/or mouse connected to the computer. I wonder if that is what is required by your HP to "see" the WD Essentials USB drive? Can you have a look and see if you have that option in your BIOS, and let usknow whether it is turned "ON", or "OFF"?

Regards,
Golden

Question: External Harddrive

I have a Nexxtech harddrive enclosure, and it doesn't seem to want to work for an extended period of time. Once I get it to work and be recognized, I will turn it off, and the next time I turn it on, the computer will recognize it as a RAW disc. That is, unformatted. When I try to access it again after that, explorer will freeze. The jumper settings are set to master, so that's not the problem. I tried to put the harddrive into the computer, and all worked out fine. I tried another harddrive in the enclosure, and everything worked out great. So, its not the enclosure, or the harddrive, or any of the connections. I'm out of ideas. The harddrive is a samsung of sorts, and 80gig. I've formatted it to NTFS, because that's how I need it formatted. On a very rare occasion, the harddrive will show up, and will have no issues, but any files that I previously put on it are missing. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Question: External Harddrive

I have a 500GB usb 2.0 Netec external hard drive.

It has worked fine since I bought it about 5 months ago. However this morning I couldn't open a folder on the drive as it said it was corrupted. Strangely later on I could open that file but not a different one. I couldn't find a reason for this or how to fix it so I decided to try and fix it by reformatting it and just copy over the data lost from the my other computer.

However I can only run a quick format the long one does not complete. If I run the quick format and and try to copy data over it has a slow transfer rate and not all the files are copied correct and some do not open.

Does anybody know why I cannot copy data over successfully and how I can fix this problem?

I am running windows 7 home premium on a acer aspire TimelineX I have had no problems in the past with this drive and was surprised it had an error in the first place as I always safely removed hardware to prevent this problem.

Thanks in advance

Answer:WD External 80g harddrive

What exactly is the "hardware area"? If the drive is recognized in one way or another, you should be able to use a data recovery program to save your info. Luckily, it's only 80gb and chances are it isn't full (imagine if it was a full 500gb drive!). Anyway, be sure you have a place to save the recovered data; either lots of space on drive C: or a different external drive, or whatever. Here's a list of free data recovery programs:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/TestDisk_&_PhotoRec_d5561.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ultimate_Data_Recovery_d5336.html
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Partition_Find_&_Mount_d5740.html *
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Disk_Investigator_d1341.html
.... and one over at Snapfiles http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/softperfect-file-recovery/spfilerecovery.html

* = these are primarily for 'rebuilding' or recovering an entire partition, at the partition level, versus file recovery at the file level.

I haven't necessarily used all of these, I just listed some here for your convenience. I have used PC Inspector; it isn't super user friendly, it isn't super fast, but it does work really well for a free program.

Good luck!

My sister pulled out the USB cable to my external hard drive when it was in use and dropped it on the floor from 2-3 feet. It turns on but when I do turn it on I hear a small buzzing sound for 1 second and my computer doesn't detect it as plugged in. Is the hard drive broken completely? And is there any place that specializes in fixing it since I had a lot of data stored in there.

Answer:External Harddrive Help

Yea, its probably gone. There are places to recover data on drives such as this one but they cost alot of money. I would put the DRIVE itself in another PC using the EIDE Cable and try to recover the data. Beyond that you can RMA it and hope they recover the data for you.

Least you know now to have DVD/CD Backups.

Hi, i think this issue has been posted before but i really could not understand what was going in the previous thread so i was hoping for a step by step of what i should do.

I have been using an external usb harddrive which worked perfectly fine for a while but stopped being detected in windows xp (am running windows 7 now) all of a sudden. When i plug it in, the sound of a usb device being detected is made and it attempts to install the driver to run the mass storage however, no drive shows up anymore in my computer. Also, under disk management it does not pick up this drive either. I have tried different computers/usb slots as well as cables and it does the same thing.

Thanks for your help in advance.

You could Google Fat32 while waiting for an answer here.

As to formatting the drive, that is easy.
Attach it to the computer & open my computer & right click your new drive & choose Format.
Choose Fat32 from the dropdown menu.
Do not choose the Quick format.

Do a full format.
A full format takes a very long time to complete.

I am trying to view my external harddrive on my PS3. I found a website that said you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Managment. Now I see it's still there on the lower right hand of the screen by the clock. It is also listed under device managers.

I've read for help, and they all say to go to disk management, right click on it and assign it a drive letter. I just do not see the external harddrive there to right click on it.

Hi,
I am trying to connect an external harddrive to my computer via USB. Whenever I plug the drive in i get the following error message:USB-device was not recognized. The drive itself works fine however, since I tried it on my other PC.
I heard it might be that I have to update my chipset, but first of all I am not sure of how to do that and if that is the correct solution for my problem. By the way, I am using Windows XP.
Please can someone be so nice to help me?
Thank you very much in advance

Answer:external harddrive

You should get an external hard drive enclosure kit if you plan on switching around the hard drives as the externals. Otherwise, just get an external hard drive. I believe that you can boot from an external USB hard drive by changing the settings in the BIOS.

Question: External harddrive

I have a 4 year old laptop, IBM Thinkpad i1412 with Windows
98. It's run through scan disk on start up with over 400 bad
clusters and will no longer start up Windows even with the
recovery cd that came with it. I'm wondering if I can install
an external harddrive using the pc card slot, (I noticed there's
at least a couple of these available for sale), and can I just
use my recovery cd in the original laptop's cd rom to install
all the original software onto the new external harddrive?
Will it make any difference if the new external harddrive is
bigger than the original? Is there anything else I should know
about this?

Happy New Year to AllThis problem has been annoying me for quite a while and i am at the end of my imagination on how to solve it.I bought a number of cases that are able to accept what were internal HD's and use them instead as external devices connected by 2.0 USB connections. The 2 computers i am eneavoring to use the device on are both running WinXP Pro SP2.Both computers have front and rear 2,0 USB ports.   I have tried 2 computers and 2 different inernal HD's.Both HD's contained data/programs/etc. The 1st was an 80gb. The 2nd is a 8.2 gb. The larger had been in an XPpro machine as a primary (with problems associated with that particular HD ,software not hardware problems). The 8.2 is from a win98se as a slave.    I configured both to slave before installing them in the case. The case has it's own power supply.  I am using a 250gb external HD constantly in one of the 2 tested computers with no problems. I also use Flash drives between 512 mb and 8gb on both on a regular basis without problems.  On one of the 2 computer for a very brief instance   there was a "new hardware found" and nothing after that. There is no refference on either computer in "device manager " as to that external being there.   As well "my computer" does not show it present.   I purchased 3 of these cases from a reputable retailer online. However there is no mfgr. name on them thus cannot cont... Read more

Is it 3 of the same brand of cases? And they don't work on either of the computers you've tried?

Question: external harddrive

I have an internal harddrive, that I wanted to make to an external drive, tat I can connect to my network. This way I can see it from several of my computers, if I can connected to my network. If its possible I need assistance on what kind of adapter I would need.

thanks

Answer:external harddrive

You need to search for "hard drive enclosures" on a site like Newegg or Amazon. Be sure to get one that is the right size (2.5" or 3.5") and connection type (IDE or SATA) to match the drive you have.

There are two basic ways to network it:

a.) Attach it to a PC that has file sharing/discovery enabled. The catch is the PC must be turned on for the drive to be recognized on the network. A USB connected drive enclosure is usually much less expensive than an enclosure that connects directly to a network (see below).

b.) Buy an enclosure that can be connected directly to a network. Search for "NAS enclosure" or "Network Attached Storage Enclosure" - again, be sure to purchase the correct size and connection type to match your existing drive.

Hope this helps.

Answer:external harddrive

JBOD is a form of RAID. How big is the external box? U could always partition the drive into 2 separate partition. read the manual to see if u can change the setting. What u want to do is remove the RAID settings (JBOD).

Question: external harddrive

I've got an old hard drive that i want to get some data off, so i bought click here to be able to connect it to my laptop. i read all the instructions and connected it accordingly. when i turned the device on i got the message that new hardware has been detected then it turned into mass storage device and displayed the name of the hard drive. (Maxtor D540X-4K) But i cannot find it anywhere. I followed the instructions on an earlier post but nothing. It sounds like the disc is spinning but i don't know what else to try.many thanks!

Answer:external harddrive

I use one of those units on both my computers. In the System Tray (by the clock) you should have an icon that says "Safely Remove Hardware" when you hold your mouse over it.If you click on it you will get a message something like: "Safely remove USB Mass storage device - Drive G" Mine is Drive G, yours might be different. It should then be available in your "My Computer"

Question: External Harddrive

i bought a sony vaio USB external harddrive off of ebay. it didnt work when i first got it but after some searching i found creating a new DWORD value in the registry disabling the selective suspend on the USB solved the problem. i havent used it in a while and im getting a message saying that the device isnt recognized and isnt showing up in my computer what do i do

Answer:External Harddrive

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify th... Read more

Question: external harddrive

i recently bought a samsung external harddrive, it worked fine until one day I dropped it on the floor, since then my computer has not recognised it.Any ideas would be much appreciatedthankswill

Answer:external harddrive

There is an old theory that you could put it an airtight bag and into the freezer for a few hours; then connect up and you may be able to get the data off it.More likely though the drop will have caused some physical damage - you could always open up and have a look in the hope that it is something simple like a disconnection of somesort.I don't hold out much hope though.click here for a new option; click here for a smaller and cheaper option.

I have a window's XP computer and I've had it for a few years now and it's been good, at first it was really fast and then it got slow but now it has got to the point where it takes about 20 minutes just for me to load my internet browser and MSN.I have an external hard drive which everything is on, all my files from my doccuments and when I last defraged my computer (about 2 weeks ago, i do it monthy not that it helps at all) it said I had 75% space on my C: drive. What do you think I should do?I have done everything that people have reccomended to speed up my computer.Do I install my programs onto my external hard drive, so they are no longer on the C: drive or do something else, please help me! lol

Answer:Help with external harddrive

Since you have already been sensible by keeping backups of all your own files, I would re-install Windows from scratch. Nothing is more likely to get your PC back to it's former speed.
