How to remove Uninherited "Deny" permission on specific folder?

Question: How to remove Uninherited "Deny" permission on specific folder?

I just migrated data from my old WinXP computer to my new Win7 computer. I noticed that I cannot open the migrated folder c:\documents and settings\user\my documents\ - access is denied.

I changed permissions to allow administrators Full Control of this folder, and the user read/write access. I also took ownership of the folder as an Administrator. However, there is a "Deny" permission which prohibits Everyone from Listing the folder/Reading data. "Deny" permissions override "Allow" permissions, so I can't open the folder even as an Admin with Full Control + Ownership. I tried to remove the "Deny" permission, but it said I was not authorized to do so and told me to try taking Ownership to get authorization. I already have Ownership, so I'm stuck here.

Does anyone know how to remove the "Deny" permission?

Preferred Solution: How to remove Uninherited "Deny" permission on specific folder?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The data is in C:\Users not Documents and Settings, it is just a junction that points to C:\Users you need to leave it alone.

Hello experts!
OS: Windows 7 Prof
I am having a strange problem. So, I am trying to revoke delete
permission on a folder. This folder would have multiple sub folders and files. This is what I am doing at command prompt:
icacls.exe "c:\Folder" /deny Administrators:D

It is able to remove the Delete permission on that folder. But every time I try to access it by double clicking on it, it would error out "Permission Denied". Why is this so? Am I doing something wrong here? Apparently, someone had a similar problem and
they posted it here
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprosecurity/thread/430f61ee-b278-4cfe-8697-f085f9842d00
Any ideas to get around it?

How to remove the "Authenticated Users" "Create Folders" permission from the root of the C Drive via command-line?
I know this question has been asked many times before, but nothing works for us!
We tried the following:
Take ownership: I cannot take ownership using the Administrator account (local and Domain Admin accounts) of the root C:. Error Access Denied
Cuurent root C: owner is TrustedInstaller and acnnot be changed.
We cannot change or remove the Create Folders permission of the Authenticated Users of the root C: . Error Access Denied.
Drive C: is hidden via GPO, but many users can enter it from the File-Explorer and create folders in the root C:.
We do not want -for many reasons- to Block/ Prevent Access to C: via GPO.
We also tried to run cacls and/or icacls under the system-account (PSEXEC -i -s -d CMD). Error Access Denied.
icacls C:\ /deny *S-1-5-11:(NP)(AD)
Error Access Denied.
icacls C:\ /remove:g *S-1-5-11
Error Access Denied.
cacls c:\ /e /c /R "Authenticated Users"
Error Access Denied.
Also using GPO "Computer Configuration\Security Settings\Restricted Groups ..." does not work!
Now we have this issue on over 450 pc's on our network. Nothing work. Please help! How to remove the "Authenticated Users" "Create Folders" permission from the root of the C: Drive on command-line?

As with many others, I get the typical UAC pop-up asking if I'll grant permission... However, I no longer use a specifc program so there's no reason to grant permission for it to make changes on my computer.

How can I permanently deny permission to this one program so that the annoying pop-up will stop appearing?

Hello,
I am having a peculiar problem on my Windows 7 64-bit, which I noticed this week. Within the "Videos" folder, if I create a folder called "temp", I am not able to create any sub-folder within it through the right click menu. Picture attached. Now the funny thing is, if I create a sub-folder within it (thru linux since my laptop is dual boot), I can see everything in linux (files and folders). If I go back to Windows, the sub-folder is not visible. Only files are visible.

If I change the name of the main folder from "temp" to anything else, the sub-folders are then visible and so it the menu option.

This is not happening anywhere else on the disk, only within "Videos/temp". I have other folders within "Videos" and they behave fine.

Any thoughts?

Answer:No "Create new folder" option for a specific folder within Videos

Interesting, I don't even get New in the first context menu drop down for any folder created under Videos. This is on Windows 10, so there is something going on there (7, 8 and 10) that Microsoft thinks is important or useful.

On both 64Bit & 32Bit Win7 machines I get an error message, denying access to a file in a folder within another folder. All have been shared, permissions granted & drives mapped to each folder. That is in addition to initially applying the changes to the file folder, subfolders, and files.

The message comes after the Client machine accesses the program, and attempts to generate a pdf.

The 64 is Win7-Win7 connection, while the 32 is connected to an XP.
Initially, I thought it to be a 64 issue. However, now it seems to be a Win7.
I have set to the Program to Run As Administrator & changed the Compatibility to XP Service Pack 3 to no avail.

I am moments away from Control+Alt+45ACP.

From somewhere, somehow, a folder named "24cd9e4542d29590bce925ec30" has been created in my W7x86pro root dir. Trying to look inside, I had to "permanently get access". But then inside it, there are a whole lot of folders named things like 1025, 1028, 1029, etc, ending with 3076, and 3082.

What's in those folders, I have no idea, since every time I try to open one, I first get the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" dialog, and then when I click Continue, I get "You have been denied permission to access this folder".

Also inside the "24cd9e4542d29590bce925ec30" folder, there are files, like "Setup.exe" and "NDP40-KB2473228.msp" and "SetupEngine.dll" and some *.bmp and some other files. I guess that NDP40-KB2473228.msp gives away that this folder has something to do with some .NET framework update, but AFAIK, there's no .NET-anything installed on this computer.

I want to remove the "24cd9e4542d29590bce925ec30" folder, but there seems to be no way I can get permission to do that. trying to get ownership or set access rights, all I get is "Access denied" or similar.

Does anyone know:
1. What those folders and files are doing there?
2. How do I remove them?

Answer:Denied permission when trying to get access to folder named "1055"

Dear techguys,

I am bashing my head and getting nowhere with windows 7....

I have 3 users; a, b, and c (say)

and administrator; z (say)

when logged into z, I want to copy the folder of user 'a' but when I try to do this it comes up with ...

"you'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this folder"

But...whatever I try and do it will not allow me to copy the folder in question.

I have not found an answer so far, so wonder if anyone here has the knowledge to help solve what is proving problematic to crack.

Thanks for any help.

Kind regards,

I seem to be having an ownership issue with just one of my folders, and I'm not sure why. Mainly I just want to know how to fix all of the subfolders at once though. I keep all of my documents and everything on a seperate HDD from the OS HDD. Well, I recently switched from the Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 Pro RTM, and now I'm having problems accessing the 'My Pictures' folder that resides on my "Documents" drive. It's weird, because I didn't have any issues when going from XP to the W7 RC.

Anyways, when I first went to open 'My Pictures' I got the dialog box saying "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder." Well, I went ahead and got that folder to work. The problem is, every single folder in 'My Pictures' and every sub-folder gives me the same thing. Being that I have probably 100's of folders in there, I can't sit here and click through every folder and set it up so I have permission to access it.

Long story short, I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to set the entire 'My Pictures' folder and all of it's subfolders at once so that I have permission to access all of them.

I looked around the net a bit, and I came across some stuff to do in Command Prompt, so I did it on my Documents drive, and it said it was successful, but it didn't do anything to the contents within it I guess, since I still... Read more

Upgraded my Toshiba laptop from Win 8.1 to 10.
Not concerned so much about slow startup and buggy apps, I spend 90% of my PC time off-line processing photographs.
I like to keep my workspace organised and tidy so am constantly deleting the useless folders mentioned above.
Will uninstalling the Camera app fix this annoyance?
Any suggestions please.

Hello,

I have searched extensively for a solution to my problem and everything I have found thus far simply shows me how to setup permissions to modify files. I apologize in advance if this is not the proper place or etiquette for posting.

I have a game file that I have deleted/modified many, many times with no problem and now it seems I don't have permission to do so.

I used information from Take Ownership of a File, Folder, Drive, or Registry Key in Windows 8 to add the convenient "Take Ownership" option for files and I have ownership of the file in question.

It shows that I have "Full Control" over the file.

But when I try to delete the file I get:

When I click "Try Again" I get:

Any idea why I lost permission to do this all of the sudden and how do I make sure it doesn't happen again?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:"Administrator permission to delete folder"

First this is a common problem in any windows OS and for some reason it just happens. Now have you downloaded a little program called "Take Ownership?" If not go into the tutorials section of the eight forums and get a copy of that little bugger and run it (A MUST HAVE). If you cannot find it here then use "Google, or Bing (your choice). . . .Good luck.

Hey guys,

this has been driving me nuts for the past few days trying to figure this out.

I am trying to share a folder off my external hard drive that is connected to my laptop with my Desktop PC.

Both computers are connected to the Homegroup and are seen on my network with no problems finding them.

Now every time I click on the folder that is on the laptop from my Desktop it gives me this error:

I have read around and see that I need to edit my permissions and I have done so for my laptop and I have given my PC full control over the folder but I just doesn't connect and gives the error every time.

The only folder on my Laptop I can access from my PC is the "Users" folder...

I don't know why this keeps happening and I'm going crazy here trying to figure it out.

Please, any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT: I GOT IT! for some reason the permisson "Everyone" wasn't included in the folders I wanted to join... My life is complete now

Answer:"You do not have permission to access shared folder" PLEASE HELP!

Good job! Thanks for letting us know.

Hi all,

First post so apologies for sharing the burden. I am running a Win Server 2008 R2. One of my users informed me that he could not access a couple of folders within the server. Upon checking, I found out that even I do not have access to the folder, even in administrator account. Whenever I try to open it, it says 'you don't currently have permission to view this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder.' so I clicked Continue.

It comes out with another popup that says 'You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access to this folder, you need to use the security tab. The security tab part is clickable so I did.

It shows the folder properties > Security with a message of 'You do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings.' I clicked the Advanced tab > Owner -> Edit button. Checked the Replace owner or subcontainers and objects. I can see the Administrators as a choice. I even tried keying in an individual user. After that, I clicked 3 subsequent OKs.

Nothing happened. Kinda stumped on this. I did read some help from here earlier but it couldn't work. I can't just 'restart' this as its a running server. Halp pls.

there are lots of things i like so far about vista (i've had it less than a week) and a few things that are obnoxious and nonsensical. one of them is this:

this is a home computer. i'm the only user on it. i'm logged in as myself. i'm trying to download some outlook backup files into windows mail. to do so, i have to drill down through \users\username\local settings\etc. to where i'm going.

but every time i hit \local settings i get the aforementioned error message. i'm eventually routed to the security permissions tab where i can plainly see that i have FULL CONTROL. apparently full control is not really full control. i'm not trying to erase the registry for pete's sake.

please tell me there is a SIMPLE way around this ridiculousness...

Answer:"You Dont Currently Have Permission To Access This Folder"

It does that because of the UAC (User Access Control) feature in Vista. Only way to get around it is to disable it. Instructions on how to do so can be found here

http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Hope this helps.

Hey all,

Trying to figure out a way to display thumbnails in certain folders (ie: Photos & Videos) and icons in others. Unfortunately it seems this isn't possible, as the only option I've found is to always show thumbnails in all folders or always show icon's.

Anyone happen to know a way around this, help is very appreciated!

Camaren

Answer:"Always Show Icons Never Thumbnails" - Folder Specific Option?

Hello Camaren,

Unfortunately it's just not possible. It's a all or none setting.

The only workaround that I know of to do this is to leave thumbnails turned on and manually change the icon of each folder that you do not want to have thumbnail views for.

I had this problem before and solved it by right clicking the affected folder , choosing the security tab and so acquiring total control.
But this time is going on with J:\ drive that is my smartphone?s SD card plugged on a usb port of my desktop (it was working until a couple of minutes ago).
No use to right click for properties as the Security tab is not available.
Well , any suggestion ? Thank you.

Well I've never had a virus or anything in my D partition before...I just found this folder named "winnt" and it had some bat files and some kind of Airline JScript and something that looks like an airplane tracker...

Then in a folder named sdata (still in the winnt folder) there's files like 911, police, air, fire, etc...OMFG!!! This is like some terrorist thing or something...FBI is gonna find me and I'll never see the light of day again!!! I'll miss the [H] and I haven't even watched LOTR Extended Platinum Collectors DVD thing (the big ass package with those book holder things)...I haven't even completed Doom 3 or started playing HL2 or even had a chance to buy an X-Box and play Halo 2!!!

AHHHHHH!!!!!! WTF is this crap on my computer??? I'm gonna delete this...I should delete it right??? Scans say it isn't a virus but what do they know...I'm screwed...

THANX
C'YA

Answer:OMG!!! Found some folder with files like "911" "police" "air" and a airplane tracker!

Hi,

Please excuse-me in advance if the topic does not contain all information right away, or if it is not at the right place.

I have a problem uploading content via Filezilla under Windows 7, on an HP p6720f i just purchased. The domain is hosted by godaddy, my ISP is ATnT (their 2701HG-B box).

If i try to connect typing the domainname in the "Host" case, i get:
Connection attempt failed with "EAI_FAIL - Nonrecoverable failure in name resolution".
If i try to connect typing the DNS number in the "Host" case, i get:
"EACCES - Permission denied"

I disabled all firewalls
I tried the netsh manipulations form topic139311
as the apprentice sorcerer i am (And that's how i discovered you guys)

If anybody can help, i'll have to put your name in the website's "powered by" section... Once it is online!

Answer:Filezilla "EAI_FAIL" and "EACCES - Permission denied"

try some of these tests for TCP connectivity

Ping using an address shows connections are working.

Ping using a domain.name shows that DNS lookup is working as well as connectivity.

Nslookup does name resolution by both address and name

Filezilla is a FTP tool and apparently has both client and server support.
Windows/* already has FTP Client support (start->run->ftp),
so why use Filezilla?

Hi,

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Aster, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it.

Hope this helps,

I am running windows xp (w/SP2) and have run into a problem at work and at home... I have trash in my recycle bin, but when I open (double click) on it, there is nothing there, and when I attempt to empty it (right click, empty) it tells me "Cannot remove folder New Folder: Directory is not empty".

I have searched google and these forums and can't seem to find any answers. Perhaps I missed it and someone can either answer or point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

This morning when I attempted to use my computer, any application (IE, OE, everything) I tried to start gave an error message (paraphrasing) “Insufficient resources exist to complete the requested task.” I thought a reboot was in order and when attempting that got “you do not have permission to shut down this computer” or something similar.

After unplugging and rebooting everything seems normal, but I’m going to run AV, anti-spyware and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Event log shows an error at the same time “the server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty”. Server? I’m not networked to a server….I’m sure it means something else, but what?

Recent software changes: Deleting MS Antispyware due to inability to upgrade to their new Beta 2 Defender (something do to with GDI, which I tried to fix by following info on the MS site), and downloading some critical updates from MS.

I’ve done searches on the errors and the answers don’t apply. I’ll probably revert my HD with an application called GoBack if the scans don’t find anything but thought you people might know what caused this.

Win2K is my OS.

I'll be checking for responses as I can't get response notices due to my ISP.

Thanks in advance,
Randall

Answer:pPLZ HELP ME about "no folder options on tools ". and how to remove recycler virus..

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!
Please close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix and make sure you are disconnected from the Internet after downloading the program and before scanning.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have ComboFix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running ComboFix.

WARNING: IF you have not already done so ComboFix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until ComboFix has completely finished.
If there is no Internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore the connection.

I have a SIMPLE and easy way to remove viruses from system restore without losing all your restore points.

In command prompt type:

cacls "c:\system volume information" /e /g "username":F

(username = your user name eg. Administrator)

it will say 'processed dir.....'

run the virus scanner again to remove the virus.

I do this in safe mode, in the administrator account so that my standard account can't access the system restore and screw something up.

Answer:Remove Viruses from XP Pro "System Volume Information" folder

That's a good suggestion for users running Windows XP Pro. Basically that command is granting authority to the "System Volume Information" folder to the user you specify on the command to get around the "Access Denied ...." error.

The other way to accomplish it is to disable "Simple File Sharing" under the Folder Options. Then right click on the "System Volume Information .." folder and select Properties. Then click on the "Security" which appears since you disabled "Simple File Sharing". At that point you can grant the user authority to the folder.

Anyway, thanks for the shortcut. It will come in handy in the future.

Platform: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

I've observed that applications that normally would require UAC elevation don't display it. The application then fails with an error because of insufficient privilege. For example, if I download an installer, and run it on another system, Windows shows the standard UAC prompt asking for permission to run it at elevated privilege. On my system, some setting has become screwed up, and the prompt is not shown. Moreover, it seems to "auto-deny" the request, and the application then fails with a permission error.

Now, if I elevate the application manually, by right-clicking, and selecting "Run as administrator..." it works fine. But on a properly configured system, I don't have to do that -- the application asks itself.

As a specific example, all Firefox updates now fail automatically, because the UAC prompt never appears, and it defaults to "auto-deny." If I download the Firefox installer and run it manually (with admin privileges) it works fine. Other installers are similar -- the problem is not Firefox-specific.

So: what setting could cause this behavior and how do I correct it? Some details:
- I have a standard Windows 7 "full user" account with admin privileges.
- UAC is set to the default option in Control Panel
- It used to work as expected, but some setting has become screwed up.
- I know that a format/reinstall would fix this but I don't want to do that right now.
- Doing thi... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 UAC elevation problem -- seems to "auto-deny" most application installers?

From the run dialog, open secpol.msc. Expand Security Settings, Local Policies and Security Options. On the list to the right, scroll all the way to the bottom and review the User Access Control Policies.

Pay special attention to:
* Detect Application Installations and prompt for elevation
* Only elevate UIAccess applications that are installed in secure locations
* Behavior of the Elevation prompt for standard users
* Behavior of the Elevation prompt for Adminsitratrs in Admin Approval Mode

Can someone please help me? I meant to deny only one folder access temporarily to another user I added, but even though I right clicked that folder, it apparently gave me the properties of the entire D:\ drive. On top of that, I ended up denying full control on 'users', which even locked out my Admin!

That said, now in "Computer", that drive does not show how much space it has left. If I right click it, I get NO security tab.

I have also attempted to go into cmd.exe and do cacls D: (anything here results in "Access is Denied" error.

I went into safemode, also got "Access is Denied" error.

Apparently, I made it so not even the admin can change the permissions or even access that drive, period.

Is there ANYTHING that I can do to override this and reset it somehow?

Friends:

I am having problems with XP Home Networking. My situation is like this: I have two PCs running fully updated XP Pro and a Belkin wireless router connected to a Motorola Surfboard cable modem. PC1 is hardwired directly to the router. PC2 connects to the router through a Belking PCI wireless card. Both can connect to the internet. The Home Network Wizard has been run on both using the same settings. When opening My Network Places, however, only PC2 can see its own shared folders. When I try to "View workgroup computers" on PC1, I get a message that says "<workgroup> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." ... and so on. When I try to repair the Local Area Connection of PC1, I get a message that says "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address." ... etc. Any of the above works successfully with PC2. Obviously the problem lies within PC1.

When I run ipconfig on PC1, I get the following:

Most of my folders don't even have an "Arrange by" option when saving photos in Firefox but one particular folder does. This folder has a lot of folders in it and I sort by date modified so I can see the last images saved, but with this "Arrange by" being present, which isn't present in any other folder, it puts the folders up at the top rather than the bottom.

How can I get rid of this "Arrange by" nonsense?

Update: I figured out why this folder is doing this. The directory linked to in the quick access is a "library" but there's no way to get it to be set to the actual location, every time I try to save it the end result just reverts to a libraries location. How can I prevent this?

Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi
What is the contents of that folder?
On my system that was upgraded from Windows 7 the Default.Migrated folder only contained a Documents folder with three Junction Points ( My Music, My Pictures, My Videos). Junction Points do not contain any data.
I deleted the Default.Migrated folder and have not seen any problems.

Once again I see more "solutions" that attempt to fix this problem. They apparently work for some folks. I have a "windows.old" folder that simply will not go away. I have tried all the fixes/solutions that I have run across thus far and none of them have removed the folder and its changing files. The folder remains and periodically when I open it I find that some of the subdirectories and files have changed. Very strange!
I have taken ownership, I have altered the folder/files properties, I have tried any number of external unlockers/ownership changes etc. I have tried deleting it from command prompt. Nothing touches it. When I attempt to delete it I receive these message windows:

Hello.

I created a certain folder for animation purposes and now want to delete it.
I did so, but the folder refused to delete [even after dragging to recycle bin, and right clicking and selecting delete].

- I restarted the computer and it's still there.
- I tried to rename it, and Win7 says that the folder does not exist on the desktop. There's no other place I saved/moved it to.
- I tried to create a folder with the same name. It did, but the "ghost folder" is still there.
- I uninstalled the program that I used to make the folder. No luck.
- I can still use the folder like any other folder, but it makes a copy of itself somewhere else on my desktop.

It's becoming increasingly frustrating... how can I remove it for good?

hi guys.

totally new here.

i just had to format my HDD and it's win XP and it's about time i install win 7.

the windows i got from the tech guy at the computer shop was win 7 64 bit. i thought it was 32 bit, as a matter of fact.

for reasons i won't tell here, just because it's irrelevant andd too long) i installed win7 first on HDD "D:" and after i backup up a few files i installed win7 AGAIN but on HDD "C:", where i want it to stay.
now i want to REMOVE the folder "windows" i have on "d:" and keep the same folder on "C:". since my windows is running from c: (i assume) i figured it shouldnt be a problem to delete the folder in d: but apparently i can't no matter what i do.
i tried "unlocker" (which worked like magic on XP but does didly squat on win7 64) and i also tried "lock hunter" to no avail.

i managed to delete the USERS folder andd even change the "windows" name to "disabled-windows" but i can't delete that folder. i need those 6GB of space :(

1) how can i remove this folder from D: without formatting it?!?!
also, upgrading to 64bit OS was done by mistake. i didnt know i am installing 64bit OS.
i am kinda scared that many softwares and games will not run or give me a lot of issues with this type of OS.

2) what can i do to avoid conflicts and stuff malfunctioning in the future?

3) what are the benefits of a 64bit OS? i have 4GB of ram, btw.

thanks a bunch.

Answer:How to remove a "windows" folder and its files?

Hello,

First, disconnect the D drive and reboot; make sure your current installation is not dependent on that drive in any way, before proceeding with the rest of this post.

With the D drive attached, boot up your Windows installation DVD, and select "repair my computer". Open a command prompt, and enter the following:
Code:
diskpart
list vol
Note the letter of your current D drive; make sure it has not changed letters. Substitute that letter for D in the command below:
Code:
exit // exits diskpart

del d:\windows /f
That should do the trick.

To be safe, disconnect your C drive before doing that, to avoid any possibility of accidentally deleting the Windows folder on your C drive.

A 64-bit OS is one compatible with a 64-bit processor. Since almost all processors these days are 64-bit compatible, the only practical difference we see these days is how much RAM each can handle. With a 32-bit OS and 4GB of RAM, you might not be able to use about half a GB of it. I recommend the 64-bit version, in case you ever want to upgrade.

Hi all,
I wanted to prevent the guest users on my laptop from accessing D: drive. So from my admin account, I set the permissions on my D: drive to deny all for the Users group, without even looking at all the permissions listed. I thought these permissions would affect only the non-admin group....but I went wrong and now cant access any file in D: even from the admin account.
Have some serious work in that drive, and need some urgent help in getting back my data...any help would be appreciated !

Thanks !

Answer:Cant access a drive due to "deny all" permissions set by my own

Before removing users permissions, you should always add your user account to the permission list. These links may help:

Is there a way to specify the folders that are listed when one clicks on "copy to folder" or "move to folder" in the context menu? Many choices are displayed, but not necessarily the ones I want to access.

Answer:"move to folder" and "copy to folder" drop down menus

The list of folders that appears is the same list that appears in Quick Access, they are the most recent folders you have visited so (at best guess) the ones you are most likely to be interested in.

If the folder you really want isn't in the list, you can permanently add it to the list by right-clicking on it and selecting 'Pin to Quick access'.

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

Thanks in advance

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".
--- Where is that folder? It contains all the files I'm looking for.

Howdy everybody!
When I hit the Windows & Print Screen keys, it is supposed to generate a picture of my Desktop into a Folder, within Pictures, labelled “Screenshots.”
But there is no such "ScreenShots" folder there!
What should I do? If I simply create a new folder, and label it “Screenshots,” will do that do the trick?  Or is there a more complicated fix?
Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Good day all.

I recently restarted my computer only to be met with an empty desktop.

Also, My Start Menu is empty. I can't locate any of programs or documents.a Right clicking and going to windows explorer, I could only view : "My Computer", "Windows (C); and when I click on them, they contain few irrelevant files.

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

My wifi still works so the only thing I can do on my system is browse on the internet.

However, I can open a microsoft office file, PDF files, if I download it directly from my email or from an external drive.

I can save files on my new blank desktop.

I presume this is a virus attack.

Can anyone be kind enough to advise me on what to do?

Thanking you in advance.

Answer:Desktop erased. Can't Locate "My Documents" folder and "Start Menu" folders

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

I'm not sure where to post this thread because I don't think it's a virus/trojan and I also don't think a program is causing the problem, but I decided to post it here because it comes the closest.

Many times, not always, when I empty my recycler, I receive a message that says "Cannot Remove Dz2 folder: the directory is not empty" When I unchedked 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' and 'Show and Hide Protected Operating System files', the Dz2 folder can't been seen in the recycler. I did a search for "Dz2" with 'Search System Folder' and 'Search Hidden Files and Folders,' but it turned up no results. I looked for it in Safe Mode also but, again, it wasn't there. While in Safe Mode, in case Dz2 is a virus or trojan, I ran Avast at the most thorough setting and I ran Spybot, Adaware and SUPERAntiSpyware Professional, but they didn't find anything. In Safe Mode with Networking, I ran BitDefender Online Scanner and it found nothing. (I couldn't run Panda because it said that something needs to be turned off. I turned everything off, such as Windows Firewall, Avast, SuperAntiSpyware, etc, but it still couldn't perform a scan.)

Is there a way to delete this folder that can't be seen or found?

Answer:"Cannot Remove Dz2 folder" message

Did you try deleting the folder while you were in safe mode? Try it.

I have tagged a bunch of pics (I actually meant to make them files in the gallery, but couldn't figure out so I tagged them instead.
So, now I have a list of tagged galleries, along with the original pics in the picture folder at the top of the box.
I also seem to have gotten a group of pic files in the folders file towards the bottom of that box which are also dupes.
So now I have 3 sets of my pictures in different places in Windows Photo Gallery.
I'd like to delete 2 of the sets and just keep the tagged set if possible.
Seems when I delete the pics from the pictures files, it deletes all my pics.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer:Can I remove "pictures" folder?

Unless it says 'copy of filename' then it likely isn't a duplicate. There is actually more than one way to get to the same files in 'My Documents'.

What should I do? If I simply create a new folder, and label it “Screenshots,” will do that do the trick? Or is there a more complicated fix? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:No "ScreenShots" Folder in Pictures To Hold " Print Screen" Images!

Is it just saving the screenshots somewhere else or is it just not taking screenshots at all? Don't know about your specific system, but on my Win 10 lappy, the screen blinks (dims) when the screenshot is taken.
Did you look in all the subfolders in Pictures to see if Screenshots folder is buried in one of them?
Win 10 also has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to put a box around the part of the screen you want to capture and then you can save it wherever you want. Maybe that's easier, and you can pin the Snipping Tool to the Start menu so it's easy to find.

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

Answer:Hiding unused "removable storage" devices from "Computer" folder

Hello Russell,

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

I've got an error at the moment that whenever I try and use the file dialog (e.g. save a new file, open a file, attach file to email etc), whatever application I'm using will crash.
This seems to have started ever since the Windows 10 Creator Update installed itself on my computer the other day.

I'm trying to figure out what is causing the crash, and I've noticed that in the File Dialog (that works perfectly fine in Microsoft Edge) there are now Camera and Photos options.

Here is a screenshot:

How can I disable them? They're not of much use to me being on a desktop, so I want to disable them as a first try to see if they're causing other applications to crash.

Thanks,
Denno

Answer:Remove "Camera" and "Photos" from left hand side of File Dialog

You can uninstall them if you wish - see Uninstall Apps in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Apps Features Tutorials

(Do have a look at the extensive Tutorial section - it contains a great deal of very practical and professional quality information)

Windows 10 Tutorial Index - Windows 10 Tutorials

Do you see Photos and Camera in traditional desktop programs' 'Save as' boxes too?

In general, though, it's not worth bothering to uninstall universal apps you don't need or use (I don't use them either).

Interestingly a change with the Creator's upgrade is that it doesn't reinstate previously uninstalled apps for hte first time.

After a catastrophic computer failure, I managed to recover almost everything. However upon booting up I got the message "BOOTMGR is missing". I used the original Windows installation disk to do Startup Repair, which recovered BOOTMGR. However now every time I boot up I get a message from Windows Boot Manager asking me to choose between "Windows 7...(recovered)" and "Microsoft WIndows Recovery Console". How can I get the computer to boot straight into Windows 7?

First off, thank you for any assistance in advance.

Problem: "System Alert" balloon in tray icon that will not go away and redirects me in IE 7 to hxxp://www.virprotect.com/?aff=1012.

Using SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE, I seem to have gotten rid of the problem of the redirection of my home page as well as removed the trojan that caused all of this in the first place (I think). The pesky balloon, however, remains. All pre-steps your forum recommeded have been completed. Answer:[SOLVED] Trying To Remove "System Alert" Balloon That Directs To "virprotect.com"

Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Please read completely before responding.
I am a 30 year IT pro, most of it as a programmer. I am the geek in charge of a tech non profit org in Hawaii. www.HawaiianHope.org
so yea.. i have at least half a clue.

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

Answer:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

This strange thing happens at times. I need to move some files within the same drive and when I drag the files/folder to another location (on the same drive) the move function sometimes turns into a copy action. I've checked to make sure that it is all within the same drive so that isn't the problem. I've also looked to see if the file is being used at the time, or if there are any files within the folder being used and I never see anything.

I've noticed that there are a lot of thumbs.db files being created that I never noticed before and was wondering if this could have anything to do with it, b/c after I do a move (that turns into a copy) and go to delete the source location, the thumbs.db file is often denied the delete action. Could the action of the OS accessing the thumbs.db file cause the whole folder to be locked for the move making it instead copy the folder instead?

After the move/copy and I try to delete everything & the thumb.db file is denied, I have to wait a few minutes and maybe after accessing a few other files, am granted permission to delete it. Is this standard or is there a way to fix this.

Answer:Why does a folder "move" turn into a "copy" some times? Windows OS's

I've always wondered this myself, why moving things sometimes turns into copy/paste.

I bought a computer back in December with Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium. I set most folders to "view list" and either "sort by date modified" ascending or "sort by name" ascending. It seems like most of the time when I go to a folder after having changed another folder's "view _____" or "sort by _____" or ascending\descending settings regardless of of what directory it's in, the folder will have changed to different "view by _____" and\or "sort by _____" and\or ascending\descending settings. Anybody know of a fix? Thanks!

Answer:Vista and "sort by _" and "view _" folder settings changing from what I set it to

Welcome to probably the most irritating Vista problem in existence. Microsoft has not even acknowledged that this is a problem yet the web is absolutely overrun by people complaining about it.

The problem is there is left over XP code and the folder settings are stored in 2 places, one for XP and one for Vista. Also, the automatic folder 'sense' that Vista has, where it determines the contents and adjust the folder accordingly, effects it. Those 3 registry keys basically fight over the settings. I've actually had the folders reset, then go back on their own before. Basically the fix that people have the best luck with is erasing the XP keys, increasing the 'bag' size, to store more folder information, and to disable the auto sense. You then have to manually set folders to Music, Pictures and Video, etc...

1. Go to Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization -> Folder Options.
2. View tab -> Uncheck Remember each folder view settings.
3. Press Reset all folders, then apply to all folders. Press apply, then OK.
4. Run the following registry file. Copy this text into a Notepad file. Save it as 'all files', so you can add your own extension. Name it something like Fix.reg ... it will appear as a registry file that merges with the registry.

Code:

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

Hi All, Happy New Year!

First time posting... On 1/3/08 i ended up with a bunch of viruses on my computer. From what I can gather they are bad news. I down loaded PC Tools to do a search and found a bunch of Trojans and other nasties...

I have uploaded a screen shot of the PC Tools scan...

In the "C:\Program Files\Video Add On" folder the following can't be deleted:
icmtr.dll
icthis
isfmdl.dll
isfmm
isfmntr

In the "C:\Program Files\Helper" folder the following was found:
turbosearchsite.dll e404 Module

What is this? Do I need the file in Helper?

Please help!

PS: I am not a techno savvy guy. I kinda know what is going on but only enough to get myself into trouble and not be able to get out! I tried a few things to get rid of them but was unsuccessful.

From what I have seen I will be here for a bit. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I didn't really know how to google for this (although I did), so I didn't find anything proper and like to ask you: How do I remove the "labels" from drive types in "Computer" window? What I mean:
These labels above the different drives are really annoying, as I'm accustomed at one item after another and somehow one could change it to that view in every OS every since (XP, Vista), but now it doesn't seem to work? (I tried all the context menu items )

Any ideas? Thanks for your help in advance, much appreciated!

Ok I have searched and searched for a solution to this common problem in Windows XP.

The "Recommended Programs" list that appears when you select "Open With" after right clicking a file, html in my case, is cluttered with programs I don't use.

The common suggestion is to do a regedit as shown below -

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList

However I still have some items that show up in the Open With list that were never found in the registry. To be specific they are some OpenOffice programs that opened an html file at one time. That is how they got on the list, I think they are shell extensions or something like that. I guess that is why I am unable to locate them with the regedit method.

Is there freeware utility that can clean these out in XP?
I found one called "Unassociate file types" for Vista but it does not work for me.

Answer:Remove Items From "Open With" > "Recommend Programs" List

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I have been using Z-Uninstall and CCleaner for a long time now. I ran the registry cleaner from within CCleaner and Glary just yesterday.

The recommended programs I want removed from the list have not been uninstalled from the PC. They were accidentally used at one time to open an html file thus the reason they made it to the list. I have cleaned out some others by using regedit, but these OpenOffice apps are not visible in the registry. They are shell extensions I think.

I am looking for a utility like "Unassociate file types" that will work on XP.
Any suggestions?
