Preferred Solution: Details tab missing in properties!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Details tab missing in properties!

You may want to carry out a virus scan, for which Malwarebytes is eminently suitable: Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

Your user account may be corrupted so you could try creating a new account to see whether that has the same problem.

Originally when XP installed, for pictures, when File\Properties was selected the pane had two tabs: 'General' and 'Summary'. Now only the General tab shows in the pane. The Summary could then be expanded to 'Advanced' which showed all the meta data for the picture, i.e. details of the camera, exposure, f number, etc. This was very useful. The change may have occured when I included a Windows update. I have included all the Windows updates available for XP from the Microsoft site. Why is this second tab 'Summary' not now available? Any ideas or suggestions most welcome.

Answer:Windows XP Pro - missing details in Properties

click hereOpen Notepad.Go to the link above and copy the text (starting from REGEDIT 4 onwards) and paste it in Notepad. Then in Notepad click Save as. In the box: save as type, select All Files. Then save the file as image.reg somewhere on your computer. Then back up the relevant registry hive. click Start, Run, type regedit and press Enter. On the left, highlight HKEY Classes Root. At the top left, click Registry, Export registry file, and save it as ClassesRoot.reg, at a location you remember. Exit Regedit. Then go to image.reg file. Right click and select Merge. Confirm.Try and see if the Summary tab comes back (restart if necessary). If the tab comes back, and image files and programs open correctly (give it some time), you can delete the backed up ClassesRoot.reg file.

I have this problem with the vista details pane and I have not been able to find any solution. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium version. The problem is that:
1. My details pane is missing a lot of properties/tags . Only ones that are appearing are file date, file name, dated created.
2. When I go into a MP3 folder, same thing happens as I described in 1. Just the 4 tags appear and I don?t get any other tags that used to be there like artist name, rating, title, etc.
3. I cannot edit any Tag in the details pane. When everthing was working fine, I could go in the MP3 folder , I could edit the title, ratings etc. and Save it. But now I can?t do anything, the save button does not appear and the tags don?t go in edit mode.
Up till now I have tried the following solutions:
1. I have reset all the folder options in Vista by going to Folders/tools/reset defaults. (did not work)
2. After resetting the folders, I have also turned on the details pane option under Organize/Layout and the details under the Views. (did not work)
3. Under View, in the tool bar, I went to Customize This Folder and chose the Music Folder Option, All Items etc. (did not work)
4. Then on the Microsoft site, I found this solution ? Open Documents by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Documents., and click a file to apply properties. Then In the Details pane at the bottom of the folder window, click the property that you want to change, type the new property in the Tags.? But it did not work ei... Read more

Answer:Missing Properties/Tags in Details Pane

Is this only for mp3 files?

You said "when everything was working fine" what happened? did you download a new program? (itunes, vlc)

If it wasn't that long ago, you could try system restore.

Did you use a "registry cleaner" or an "optimizer"?

On the properties window, general tab, what is it set to "open with"?

good luck

My previous OS was Windows 7 64-bit. I used rip my favorite music tracks and was able to edit the details in the Details tab of the Properties window after right-clicking on the file name. The system hardware is the same. OS is now Windows 8 64-bit. But when I open the mp3 file's property window and go to the details tab, I get fewer options in detail and I CANNOT edit any one of them. I have run sfc - no problem. I have opened the Explorer as Administrator and still the same issue. Here's the screen capture:

It might help to know that I am the sole user of the desktop PC. And that I have another PC at another place with same configuration also running Win 8 64-bit. On that PC for the same file I see more details on the screen and I can edit the fields. I might post the capture from that PC later when I go there.

Meanwhile, any ideas for this odd behavior? I also ran the mp3Tag to get over the possible issue with ID3 tags.

Need help to solve this. Thanks.

Why all file details are not visible for a exe/dll/ocx etc. from windows explorer?

When you click over an exe file to show properties information details, the dialog showed, it does not show all information into dialog (i.e: InternalName doesn't appear). Can I change this?

Thanks in advance!

Nope. The information that is displayed is hard coded to show only "relevant" information. I have no idea why "InternalName" is not included, but you cannot change the display.

Being a developer myself, I've sometimes needed this extended information. But my dev tools have utilities to view such version resource information, so it never really bothered me that Windows never displayed all of it....

I have a video folder that I would like organize by genre (i.e.: action, drama, comedy, etc.) but Windows isn't allowing me to add or change existing file details.

I consulted this document and realized the following applies to my situation.

Some properties can't be added or changed. In those cases, clicking next to the value won't change its appearance.

Is there a work-around? (e.g.:Additional software)

Answer:Adding properties to details pane

Nothing majorly important, no deadline, no urgency, just wanted to know how to do this in Vista.

Now, I don't demand a lot from an OS (Obviously, seeing as this is the Vista section. SLAMMERTON!), but I love the fact that there are so many properties/details to files, and I can choose which ones display/sort in Windows Explorer. I have a good collection of literature in .pdf form, and I'd like to set certain details to catalog them. I have the folder by default displaying details like Authors, Publisher, Pages, Country/region, Description, Company, Tags, and so on. The problem? All those fields are empty. And, when I go to the individual files' properties (Right-click > Properties > Details), none of those fields appear.

Is there anyway I can edit these fields? Ideally, I'd be able to "batch edit" them, so I don't have to go through one-by-one to give 20 books the same author, but I'd settle for one-by-one.

Or, do they have to be a certain file-type to have these fields editable? The only field I've been able to edit was the "Tags" field, and those could only be image files, and that's only when they were opened individually, in Windows Photo Gallery!

I'm the only account on the PC, UAC is turned off, blah blah blah...

Any words of wisdom will be helpful.

Answer:Changing Details/Properties of Files?

Banjo Man - try opening the PDF file then select FILE from the Tab at the top and select
Properties and see if you can modify the fields. Don't know how you would batch-edit them unless you wrote a Script.

Using Windows & Home Premium SP1...

I am trying to troubleshoot a problem with my outlook pst files (outlook no longer recognizes it as a pst file following a fresh Office 2010 install- I was using 2010 before the reinstall. I recently had to recover the files from another drive).I noticed the file had a 1982 date (something my sync software occasionally does), thinking that might be the problem).... but I could not change the date on the file!

So I have a more basic problem.

I am administrator. As a test, I created a text file, and can easily change the file name. But I cannot edit any of the attributes under Properties /Details. I want to change the modified date.

If I click on Value, nothing happens (greyed out)

I tried the option to remove personal information - it makes the copy, but I still cannot edit the date.

What are my next steps??

Answer:Cannot edit properties/details of any file

Open Windows Explorer. Navigate to the file you want to edit. Left click once on the file. In the Details Pane at the bottom of the WE window right click to the right of the property you want to edit and that will put the detail in a box where you can edit it.
More importantly sort out why the date is getting changed to an earlier date. Sounds like a duff bios battery to me!

Hi,I've got Outlook Express 6 and occasionally I get what is obviously a spam email. When this happens, I like to add the sender's email (or domain), as well as the return-path email (or domain) to my Blocked Sender's List on my dial-up provider's Webmail Spam Filter. So when I get one of these messages, I right-click on it and choose Properties. The Details tab, of course, gives you all that information, but sometimes I also click on Message Source at the bottom of the Details tab to see if there are any other email addresses or domains listed in there that I can block. (Actually, you can usually get all the information from the Details tab, so I really didn't mean to click the Message Source this time...)So I'm wondering if everything I've described above is 100% safe to do on a potentially harmful email (whether it may have a virus attached or anything bad that can come with a harmful email)...? And, specifically, can it be harmful to click the Message Source in Properties > Details on an email if there happens to be a virus or anything bad in it or attached to it? Can anything get onto your computer by doing that? Thanks!

Answer:"message Source" In Oe Email>properties>details

I've used this method for years to look at suspicious emails and no problem. You are safe because the email never "opens".

In Windows 8.1, I want to customize the properties displayed in the Details Pane for ALL of my MP3s . (That is, I do not mean removing/modifying the properties on an individual MP3/music file. I mean choosing what gets displayed in the Details Pane for all music files.)
In XP (which I love and miss), I do believe the Details Pane could be customized easily, but I see no way to do that in 8.1. For example, I want to display Artist, Album, Year, Track #, Size, and Duration ONLY. How do I remove Rating, Genre, Title, etc.
Also, can I remove the "breadcrumbs" (...) and have the full line displayed? In XP, everything was displayed. Now you have to hover over something to see it. How is that better?
I miss XP's file manager!

The Links details on my IE7 Toolbar have suddenly gone missing. The word Links is still on the left hand side of the space for the toolbar but it is completely inactive when I click on it or anywhere else in the bar area. Neither can I drag URLs to this area. Under Tools the Link option is ticked & Lock the Toolbars is unticked. Does anyone have any ideas on how this has happened & how it can be rectified?

Answer:Link details missing

If Lock Toolbars isn't ticked then you should have a faint vertical line to the left of the word Links. If you hover your cursor over this it should change to a double headed arrow and you should then be able to drag the links area out or move it onto another toolbar.

A Windows update may have changed the options for security or stability reasons. The effect may not have been their direct intention, but a result of 'fixing' something else. You can still get this information in Windows Media player (or what ever they are calling it these days) or in Real Player. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane. This site is about helping people, lets keep it that way.

When restarting my PC my monitor wouldn't always start up again. I finally got fed up, took it in to a shop, video card was defective. I had it replaced with a Celestica Radeon 9200. They called me from the shop, said the computer was ready, but that the display was all messed up. I didn't think it'd be that big of a deal to fix, so I took it home. The resolution options are available as a tray icon so that was no problem. But, when I go into display properties, I have no tabs - no desktop, screensaver, bappearance, or settings - all I have is themes. Is this because my old video card messed up Windows (XP Pro)? Everything else seems to be running properly. No viruses, adware or spyware. Is there a registry edit to get these tabs back?

I have a problem on my work computer at work. All of the lab techs at my college (some shouldn't be lab techs mind you) all have to use this computer to help the students and most of us will browse from site to site looking up things while we are bored. Our boss has given me the assignment of trying to fix what they have screwed up.

When we attempt to view our system properties the only tabs visible are:

Computer Name
Automatic Updates

The last tab we can see it but its header is blank and when it is selected it is blank. They have ran all the microsoft antispyware, adaware, spybot blaster, and our local command antivirus and it hasn't picked up anything. We had a recent flair up of the My.tob virus in a few classrooms but this problem was around way before then.

Looking forward to what you ask me to do to try to fix this.

Anyone have a guess? Ben helped me rule out ATI software.....

When I select 'Display' from the control panel menu (or when I right click on the desktop and select 'Properties', nothing happens (more precisely, I sometimes see an instantaneous flash as it tries to create a window of some sort, which is immediately removed). I can adjust the screen resolution using the Catalyst control center GUI, but the standard Microsoft options to control Wallpaper, screen savers, themes, etc are absent from that GUI. I am currently running without the Catalyst control center (only the driver).

Problem does NOT occur in Safe Mode.

Machine: Windows XP-Pro, SP3, nearly up to date on 'Windows updates (*).' ATI 4830 GPU with latest 10-6 driver.
Much debugging as been related to the Catalyst control center, but the problem persists even after removing the display driver, all catalyst software, and running Driver Cleaner (run in safe mode), and rebooting using default VGA driver. Problem is present in a brand new admin user account as well. I have also removed all startup programs, except maybe the mouse using various 'startup' utilities as well as editing RUN portions in the Registry.

This machine has never had a malicious malware attack, so far as I am aware.

I don't know when this started, but I noticed the inability to set my wallpaper when I recently tried a screen saver program, which left me with a blue desktop background.

I am about to lose what is left of my mind, and I am hoping I can get some help. So here goes.

A musician friend of mine gave me a copy of his new album, and I burned it to my Computer. Its not like he is a big name musician, so I had to fill out the properties for each MP3 on the album. When I right clicked the Properties for the songs, I noticed that under the summary tab, The different fields were suddenly missing.

In contrast to what should be there; things like, Artist, Album Title, Year, Track number, Etc. I have Track number, Title and Comments.

At first I thought I may have turned this view off, so i restarted each and every service on my computer. That's when I found a Family Keylogger that I never installed (I am the computer's owner, and administrator, so it really should not be there)

I tried to remove it, but I don't think that It worked. When i turned several of the services off again i noticed it was gone. (but that does not mean its truly gone) My anti Virus didn't catch it, neither did spybot or adaware...

I asked a friend, and he said the properties are gone because of a virus, or something similar, but as far as i can tell - my computer is clean. (with the exception of this elusive family keylogger)

I read a thread on here from someone who had a similar problem with their audio file properties summary. However, no solution was given, and the thread had not been posted to since January, which is why i came here for help.... Read more

It's embarrassing to ask someone to email a contact because my phone can't recognize it. I love Windows Phone, but my business can't suffer because of it. Anyone else have this issue? I'm seriously thinking about returning my new Icon for a Droid Turbo or iPhone because of this.

Answer:Why am I missing contact details when receiving contacts thru text/SMS?

If a drawback in your phone affects your business then its better returning it and getting what works best for you

I recently used IOBit uninstaller to remove all traces of a program from the registry. I'm assuming it removed something that caused this issue, because after I used it all my program information in Add/Remove programs was missing. However, other users on my PC show all information in Add/Remove programs. Is there a way to repopulate this or would I have to create a new user? Thank you

Answer:Missing Program information/details in Add/Remove programs

How can I restore these?

Answer:Missing Display Properties Tabs

The first thing is to be sure that you're clean. I'd suggest a couple of these free, online scanners to verify that you're clean: (Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)http://housecall.trendmicro.com Scan Only - no removal If you're not clean, then a fix is unlikely to help you out - and if you're not clean, I'd suggest posting in the Am I Infected forum for assistance from the experts (here's the link: )Once that's done, post back and we'll work on fixing the display properties.

I am new to this forum and would like some help on a folder properties issue. All my document folders like Pictures, Music, Documents, etc. have been redirected to a different partition than C:/ All except for the Videos folder as there is no Location tab in the Properties window. I searched other threads but have not found a solution. Could someone please help me out here?

Answer:Missing Location tab in folder Properties

Hello Kheyno, and welcome to Vista Forums.

There may have been a mistake made when moving the Videos folder. This should be able to help though.
Backup anything that you do not want to lose in the Videos folder to another location.Restore the default Videos folder location (Option Three).Delete all Videos folders including any at C:\Users\(user-name) and in the Start Menu.Type shell:My Video in the Start Menu search box and press enter.Restart the computer to apply. It may take a couple of times before you see the default Videos folder back. Now try to move the Videos folder to the other location again if you would still like to.Hope this helps,

However, several tabs are now missing from Display Properties. The only tabs there available are "Screen Saver" and "Settings". I cannot access them from Control Panel either.I have seen advice in other forums about using GPEDIT.MSC but this will not open and Windows says "the tool that you requested is not available".I'm using XP btw.

(As far as I know) I already used Spybot, Adaware SE and I run Norton's Antivirus. The problem is whatever got a hold of my machine deleted all the tabs under display properties except settings and screensaver. I can no longer use wallpaper so I have no choice for a desktop. I also have a small message in the middle of my desktop that says "Warning! Your computer is infected! Everything else seems to be back to normal since cleaning my computer and the programs I used to get rid of the other crap are not finding anything new. I have a Gateway laptop (out of warranty) running XP Pro. Any suggestions about what to do next?

Answer:Tabs Missing Under Display Properties

Sounds like you may still have some nasties floating around in there. Moving this over to Spyware forum....If you have not - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal please do so now. Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

If you have completed ALL of these steps then please move on to providing the requested information and completing the steps below.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I am seem to be missing some of the tabs in display properties in control panel. I am running windows XP home edition. I picked up a virus and I had some other issues for a little while. I noticed when it started to infect and I pulled my internet cord in case it was going to try to get at any of my personal data. I ran my Norton 360 right away and after about an hour of running the scans and deleting some stuff, my comp started to work a lot better, but now I seem to be missing the tabs where you would change wallpaper and screen saver settings. There might be more, but I'm a casual computer user and I don't remember what the others might be

Well looking at my norton history there were a few viruses:

Trojan.Zlob times 3
and one named simply downloader
Right now the comp seems to be working OK and all scans come back clear, so it's just the tabs as far as I know.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!

I'm running 4 monitors on 2 geforce 8800 graphics cards (2 connected to each). The problem is, one of them isn't being detected by the system. In display properties under settings, it's only showing 3 monitors. Even if I don't have one of the monitors connected, it still shows up as 3 monitors (with the one I unplugged as disabled).

I tried swapping cables, swapping which monitors are connected to which port of each graphics card, and checking to see if it's being detected in the nvidia control panel. I think the problem is with the windows display settings. Is there any way to force it to detect the fourth monitor?

I am running Windows XP Home and I have lost the above tab and understand that I may be able to fix it by going to "gpedit.msc" in the line of Run, on the Start Menu. Unfortunately, it can't be found. Is there anywhere I could download this file and, if so, in which folder would it go?

Answer:Desktop Tab Missing from Display Properties

GPEDIT.MSC (Group Policy Editor) isn't available on XP Home Edition, partly because XP Home cannot join a domain by design. Although the tool is designed to be used in an Enterprise environment running Active Directory, all it really does is making registry entries. So, the best alternative is to edit the registry using Regedit. Be aware that editing the registry incorrectly can make your system unbootable or cause other issues, so proceed carefully before diving in!

I'm using a Mac Pro (desktop) but running it exclusively in Windows XP 64-bit. Until recently, all 16 GB of RAM was working correctly. Now however only 8 GB of RAM shows up under system properties and DxDiag. However, CPU-Z from CPUID shows 8 slots of memory each with 2 GB (which is indeed what is loaded). Why is there this discrepancy and how can I make the machine use all of it again? Thanks.

Answer:Memory missing from system properties

Has the machine been moved? Even though some software is correctly reporting the memory it would be worthwhile opening it up and checking all the sticks of memory are firmly pushed down and correctly seated in the slots. I'd guess the different software has different methods of querying the system properties. Some might actually query the memory, others might just query what the bios reports which might register the ram details even if it isn't functioning properly.

Check this first:

Have you installed the display drivers for your chip or installed card?

That is sometimes a factor.

The other is a policy setting, but this should not occur on a clean install.

If one exists, it would be found in one of the registry keys below:

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

Hi fellas,

I am experiencing a big problem. As the title of the topic suggests, tabs in Display Properties are missing. Well, I have searched through Google a lot for this, and none of the advices worked. The advices generally point to a registry hack, but it does not work for me.

Well to describe the problem better, this thing arised after a Spyware Infection wallpaper came to my computer. I fixed everything related to it (at least I think so), but this sticked on me. If I run in safe mode, I can see all tabs properly. Also in normal mode, I can only see the themes tab, (with Windows Classic, XP, current theme, etc. as options) if I change to another theme and say apply, I can see the tabs (not exactly as they should be) until I press OK to close that window.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

I have only one desktop in my network that will not display the remote tab in System Properties. I would like to enable remote desktop to this computer, but am unable to because I can not get to the remote tab. I am running Windows XP Pro in an Active Directory Domain. I have searched online for a possible cause and have only found three possible solutions with one I really do not want to try. I have tried two of the possible solutions with no success.
One is to make a few changes in the registry that would enable remote desktop connections, and two would be to re-register the dll remotepg. The third option that I do not want to have to do is to repair install Windows.
Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what may be causing the tab to be missing or a possible work around (other than using a third party software).

I was helping a friend whose computer was a real mess last night, all kinds of trojans, viruses, etc. I was able to get Microsoft Antispyware installed, and the latest version of AVG free installed, and pretty much have things calmed down.
However, the desktop screen is still "hijacked" and shows a black window telling me my computer is infected, blah, blah, blah.... and the only button you can click on wants to go to

I can't change it because it has removed some of the tabs in "Display Properties". I have a "settings" tab and a "screensaver" tab, "themes", "desktop" and "appearance" are no longer there.

there are two entries in the registry that I tried to edit manually, but as soon as I do, something changes them back.
in the section : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System there are several entries, default I believe should be "0" and they are showing as a "1" but it won't keep the changes.

I'm running the latest AVG free version and also running Microsoft AntiSpyare, scans with both come up clean. I just want to get my display properties window to show all the tabs again.

Answer:display properties window missing three tabs

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.

Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Reboot into safe mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.

If still having problems at this point, run the standard cleaning procedures below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of t... Read more

I have tried to reinstall the protocol and I get an error that the file is missing.
It used to be there. I am running XP Pro sp2 (pre-install), Intel pro wireless 3945, AVG (recent scan clean), Comodo firewall, Spyware blaster, all updates.VMware server (the guest bridged internet connection used to work, the nat still does)
I just uninstalled comodo Boclean as this is the most recent change to the system, but I still get the error. My connection still works but I want the protocol.

I need help repairing the file so I can reinstall the protocol.

Answer:Internet Protocol TCP/IP missing from Network Properties

Okay, this is wher I am so far.
I came across MS kb 299357 that resets the Internet Protocol but that didn't work.

I found this;
You have a bad registry entry.

Start, Run, regedit

Click on this key:
Scroll past the folders to show this value: DevicePath

The value should be %SystemRoot%\Inf and of type REG_EXPAND_SZ

I checked into this and my key value is about half a page long. I'll post if anyone's interested.

I found another thread that suggested to uninstall the wireless drivers. I did that and received and error that the driver could not be uninstalled, it was needed for reboot. I restarted the computer and 'new hardware was found, installed but would not work properly.'
I tried installing the manufacturers (sony) driver and was told that I would have to manually uninstall the driver in order to downgrade as the driver currently installed was a newer version. Still not working.
I tried the Intel 3945 abg driver. I received an error that the install failed because the system could not find the file.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Oh, forgot to mention I can't install any thing in the network properties, ie. Client,... not just Internet Protocol.

When I right-click on the volume control, next to the clock on the System Tray, it shows me , but no Sounds and Audio Devices Properties. I have also looked elsewhere, like the Control Panel for them, to no avail - they show me the same thing as the volume control. Can anyone help me with this issue? Specifically, I need to access the Sound Playback and Sound Recording boxes in
, which I can't get for some reason.
However, this box is shown in Windows XP. Might this have something to do with the fact that I have Vista on a Dell Laptop? My sound card is SigmaTel. Thank you to all who can help

The wireless network properties box is missing. I have a Satellite pro 4600 with Linksys card for wireless and every thing worked once before. I replaced the hard drive with a new one and rebuilt the system. After installing the Cisco PEAP supplicant software to be able to logon at the college the box is now missing. I've tracked the problem to the PEAP software overwriting files on Win2000 sp4.
Or so the masters at M/S claim. Their advice was to reinstall Sp4. This didn't work. All of the information I have for configuring wireless cards for Win2000 show this box and it was there the firt time I set up the system. I have reformatted the hard drive twice then Installed Win2000 pro and the Sp3 and Sp4 using two different Install cds. I did not install the PEAP supplicant and still no box.

Thanks Rezehk

Just a small detail, but I'm stumped.Just restored an Acronis backup to one computer and the Power Options Properties "advanced" tab has lost one of the two power button options. It still has "When I press the power button on my computer" and that drop down box, but the other "When I press the sleep button on my computer" has vanished!!! It was there before the restore (and restoring the old'un brings it back, so it can't(?) be a BIOS setting or hardware change!Anyway, I used to be able to set hibernate on that option, and thus use the keyboard sleep button for quick hibernate. Can't now. Any ideas? It is just sooo demanding to click on "Start... Turn off".. Well, really, it's the frustration of not knowing why it has vanished! I will live if there's no solution, but I shall also lose some more hair!

Answer:Missing Option in "Power Options Properties"

Oh, I should add that the "Hibernate" tab does have enable hibernate.

Hey everyone, I've got a problem displaying all the Display Properties Tabs (right click on desktop --> properties). Whenever I do this, only the screensaver and settings tabs are shown. My other tabs (themes, desktop, appearance) magically dissappeared?! Anyone know how to get them back? My system setup is as follows:

P4 2.6C
Abit IS7 mobo
BFG 6600GT OC (using ForceWare 81.95)
1 gb RAM
250gb HDD

Any other details you need, just ask me. Thanks for your time!

Answer:Windows XP Pro: Missing Display Properties Tabs

Yeah are you supposed to have access to those pages? Maybe someone set it up like that on purpose. Assuming that you are you would also have access to run the Registry Editor. So here you go.
1) click 'start' then 'run'

2) type in 'regedit'

3) click HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then 'software', then 'microsoft', then 'windows' then 'currentversion', then click 'policies', and finally click 'system'

4) 5 icons should now have appeared on the right

5) double click the files NoDispBackgroundPage and NoDispAppearancePage and change their value from 1 to 0

6) delete the file wallpaper REG_SZ

7) close regedit

Yesterday, possibly 2 days ago, I'd came from school trying to scroll through youtube only to realize that the touchpad 2 finger scrolling was not working. I've only had the laptop for about a week so i was pretty surprised when the issue had arisen so soon. In the beginning i had just pushed it aside and used the scroll bar, but now it has begunn to annoy me and I am just put up with it, so as a result of wanting the 2 finger scrolling back I investigated my situation on Google and Bing and even on this very website. For some reason Hp Support assiztant didn't even pass through my brain for a second, so when I had come across a post suggesting that I check it out, i went ahead and did just that. As I was folowing the directions given to me by the Hp Support Assistant video, it became apparent that after opening the control panel, then the hardwareand sound, then clicking on mouse, where it told me to later click the device settings. Only, the device settings tab is  missing, so now, I'm stuck with a new malfunctioning laptop. How can I fix this?  I'm like praying for an angel to come and help, because the scroll bar is a real hassle, also i can no longer zoom in and out on a website with the touchpad, so that's also bothersome. Anyways any suggestions are worth the world, thanks.

It used to be when hovering over a video file, XP would provide the size/dimensions of that particular video file or I could right click on the video file and get all info from the Summary/Advance tab......but now all those info are gone! How do I get it back? Thanks. P/s, since I can not upload pix here, please view the pix here, here

Answer:Summary tab on XP video file Properties missing?

Does the file have a default program associated with it that it normally opens with e.g. avi file opens with Windows Media Player (or whatever you normally use to play it)?If not go into Folder Options in Windows Explorer, Tools menu and select the File Types tab, find the file extension and change it to open with your preferred program.
