How do I disable the "The publisher could not be verified..." warning?

Question: How do I disable the "The publisher could not be verified..." warning?

My toolbar contains an icon that links to a program in my "C:\Program Files (x86)\" folder. Every single time I click on the icon I get the attached pop-up window. The window keeps appearing even if I uncheck "Always ask before opening this file" and click "Run" and enter in the admin username and password. Why does the message keep appearing and how do I disable it entirely?

Preferred Solution: How do I disable the "The publisher could not be verified..." warning?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to play Runescape (nerd much?) and I keep getting the stupid Java "This publisher could not be verified." warning. I don't believe i have gpedit.msc however I do have regedit.

Answer:How do I disable the "This publisher could not be verified." warning?!

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I don't want to preach, but before you disable warnings of this kind you may wish to consider you have a possible virus infection.

I'd be inclined to run a full virus scan in Safe Mode, for which Malwarebytes is highly recommended.

Since my original thread regarding this problem is closed (too old, from November 2008), I am continuing it on this new thread.

As a reminder, somehow for some strange reason, my Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop stopped giving me warnings for unsigned downloadable programs. I tried (almost?) everything conceivable to fix that - to no avail. Here is the original thread:

I *want* the "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning!

I eventually got to implementing the last suggestion (sfc /scannow), but that didn't help either.

I am out of ideas, totally baffled by this mystery.

Any other ideas?

Answer:I *want* the "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning (cont'd)

Eureka! I can't believe this... I think that I solved the mystery: Said warning does appear but only for programs that I download via Internet Explorer!

I was testing this function all that time by downloading via Firefox 2.0...

Apparently, the hint has always been there, in the form of the registry key path: as its name implies, it is intended for Internet Explorer. Duh!

However, I could swear that it worked via Firefox, too, on the other machine. The other machine has Firefox 3.0. Is it possible that Firefox 3.0 supports this feature while Firefox 2.0 doesn't?

Greetings everybody (my first post in ever). Before posting here, I searched (and googled) almost everywhere for a clue how to solve my problem, but all I could find were requests (and tips how) to disable the "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning, which is exactly the opposite of my problem.

For some strange reason, my Windows XP Pro (SP2) laptop does not display this "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning when trying to run a newly downloaded program, even when that program is not signed! (with a digital certificate)

I verified that the relevant IE6 advanced security (tab) settings are set correctly. Specifically, the following two settings are checked:
Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for signatures on doanloaded programs.
Also, my file system is NTFS (without which this XP SP2 feature won't work).
So, I reached a dead end as far as trying to understand why my XP SP2 stopped warning me about unverified downloaded programs - and how to fix it.

Any idea what could be wrong in my system? How to fix it (short of re-install of Windows XP, of course).

this is more of an annoyance than a real problem but I'd sure like to know how to stop it from happening.

I work for a small company, doing Technical support. We have three of four applications that I have to open every day, programs written internally by our programming department. The programs sit out on a server, but I have a local shortcut and confuguration file to run them over the Network. Every time I close and re-open these programs, I get the infernal warning message:

"The Publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"
Underneath is the message "this file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. You should only run software from publishers that you trust"

I have to click "run" to get it to launch, and it opens fine. It just irks me that I can't figure out how to tell Windows to quit bothering me and just open the program!

Is there not some place where I can go and tell Windows which programs to open it every time, and add it to a trusted list somehow?

Answer:turn off "Publisher could not be verified" message

thanks !! that seems to have worked, that means any .exe file will run without prompting.
I'm a bit surprised there's no method to selectively choose individual .exe files, like a firewall program can do.

I have made a setup.exe file to distribute to our customers.
I run it from IE.

After the Run Save Cancel popping up it says "unknown publisher" (see attached image)

How can I assign a publisher to my EXE? I at least want it to say Publisher: MyName rather than unknown.

I guess for that warning to go away I need to purchase a Verisign or something but I hear thats expensive?
I would settle for the warning to at least mention my name !

Some of my installed programs always display the following warning when I run them:

This is pretty annoying, because I always have to click on the "Run" button when starting them. It's OK if Windows asks me the first time, but then it should remember my choice...

Is there any way to suppress this warning?

Here is what I have already tried so far, but with no success:

- Reduce notification level in "User Account Control Settings"
- Check the "properties" of the exe file

I've searched this site and the rest of the net to find out how to disable this junk but no luck. I've disabled all of the crap..err Security Center "features" and I've even disabled the Security Center service.

Back to IE!?

It doesn't have anything to do with Security Center, it's actually a part of Internet Explorer. I looked in the custom security options and saw nothing to disable it. Maybe it can't be disabled?

Is there something wrong with your media player? Do you have the DivX codec installed? I'm not familiar with the way IE deals with files with no handlers, but it looks like that dialog is telling you there isn't one.

Hi All,

I am working on a project at work that requires me to call a .bat file from the network from within IE.

Im running IE6 on XP SP2. Problem is, I keep getting the "File Download - Security Warning" prompt.
I have attempted to disable this in "internet options\security\local intranet\

automatic prompting for file downloads - disable
file download - enable"

yet it keeps appearing.

Microsofts feel they need to keep us all "secure" but I know the code im dealing with in terms of this batch file and want it to run, without prompt.

Anyone know a workaround? tks in advance.

Hi whenever I try to open a file from the local hardrive I get the "Open File Security Warning" asking me whether I want to open the file or not. This is getting rather annoying. I searched online but everything I found seems to be dealing with network shares and I am not using that. Just a file on the local hard drive in the computer I am using to the right of me. I remember in my last install I turned it off somehow, but for the life of me I can't figure out how I did it. Anybody have any ideas? Or is this here to stay?

Answer:disable "Open File Security Warning"

The final answer!1. Go into internet options, through control panel or IE.2. Set the "Launching Applications and Unsafe Files" option to enabled. This will give you a retarded bar in IE that says your security settings are unsecure or something. To get rid of it:1. Start>Run>gpedit.msc>Enter2. Under Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Internet Explorer set the "Turn Off the security settings check feature" to enabled. If you don't have Internet Explorer under windows components:1.  right click Administrative Templates and click "Add/Remove Templates"2. Click Add button3. Navigate to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\GroupPolicy\ADM\"4. Hold shift and highlight all the files that start with "inet"

look, i KNOW active x is disabled, and i'm really okay with the page displaying funny. is there any way to turn off these warnings ('do not show this warning again' would be nice)? or is microsoft just trying to annoy me into turning active x on?

The title pretty much says it. I occasionally want to create/open/edit/save a .txt file in Word 2007 but I always get that annoying File Conversion warning. When saving a text file initially it warns of losing formatting. When opening a text file it says, "Select the encoding that makes your document readable" with the Windows option pre-selected.
Since these are files I've created and desire to edit, I'd like Word not to keep warning me of these things or requiring me to "select the encoding" every single time I open it for editing.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks for your input!

Personally I'm not liking this. To sum the article up it says that there is no way to perform a clean install with the Windows 7 upgrade disc. You can only perform an upgrade with it and there is no "work around" like in Vista.

There is a a great comemnt that sums up my thoughts "Way to tell everyone this right after the huge preorders for the upgrade version finish."

I guess Microsoft hasn't changed that much after all. I'd rather have them make good products then have good customer service I guess.

Answer:"Rules" for Windows 7 Upgrade Verified

That's just BS. For one thing that article mentions upgrading RC Windows 7 and that will not be possible as it will require a clean install, but the same clean install method available in Vista will work in Windows 7.0.

This just started about a month or so ago...
I'm sure this little pop up came attached to some program I downloaded, but it's not a large enough
program to even show up when you try to use Install/Remove or Revo uninstaller programs.
I would think that most programs will send out software updates or if I open a program they have
update links built into them.
Disabling the popup doesn't keep the program for looking for updates (or does it?), it just doesn't keep
popping up and being an annoyance, right?
Do I "REALLY NEED IT"? If I need it, then so be it, I just don't want it to be a nuisance and keep
popping up.
Thanks ahead of time....

Answer:How do I "DISABLE" the popup "Common Software Manager"?

Using a registry editor to search for Common Software Manager might give you the folder and file[s] this utility is in [on the harddrive]. Deleting that folder and said file[s] might be enough. Do not use any universal computer fixit utilities for this; such cause more problems than they fix.

My work laptop has picked up this virus/malware. What it does is blocks your desktop and all programs with a white screen, and if you are connected to the internet it brings up a bogus FBI warning that says you have to pay a fine. Task Manager is unavailable. I cannot remove it because I cannot get to the BIOS without an admin password, nor can I boot in safe mode w/o this. I do not want to give it to the I.T. of my work place because they will probably just wipe the drive and re-install the programs of my work place. I hate to have that happen because I have installed on this computer several programs I need for my work, and if the drive gets wiped I'll have to spend hours hunting down these programs again and re-installing them. Is there some way around the "admin rights" stuff so that I can run Kaspersky's WindowsUnlocker and be done with it?

Answer:"White Screen", "FBI Warning" Malware!

Really, you should just take it to your IT department to let them deal with it so you don't make it worse.

I work in a corporate IT environment right now, and much prefer a user come to us before they tried to fix it on their own..

Yes, you'll most likely get the drive wiped, however you can tell them to back up your data for you, and possibly even reinstall those programs that you need; especially if its for work, they should have the licenses and/or installers for the software.

I have a piece of software that periodically fails for some unknown reason. I have pretty much given up on trying to figure out what its problem is. I simply respawn the process if it fails to respond or no longer exists. The process runs several times a

disable this auto restart. Is there any way to do this?

I have already tried the regedit hack:

When I plugin an external USB hard disc or USB stick it appears that Windows 7 pops up a dialog window asking me:

"Do you want to scan and fix removable disc?"

After reading a while in Internet I saw two methods for disabling these popups:

1.) Disabling service "Shell Hardware detection"

2.) enabling "Turn off Autoplay" in gpedit.msc

Whats the difference?

I want be sure that if I plugin a new USB device (like an USB stick or USB printer or USB hard disc) this USB hardware IS successfuly detected and joined by Windows 7.

So I can imagine that the first method is too brutal because it prevents inclusion of new USB devices

Is this correct?

If yes: Why is it recommended so often for avoiding the popup?

Answer:Disable popup "Do you want to scan and fix remov.device""? 2 methods?

You get that message because Windows detects something wrong with the file system on the device. This can happen if the device was unplugged without "Safely Removing Hardware", and a transfer was not complete.

The methods you mention just mask the problem.

You can let Windows scan and fix the drive, choose: fix file system errors.
or, do a full format on the drive, not the quick format.
Or, run Chkdsk /f X: manually, X = the problem drive letter, you may have to run it more than once.

It is always a good idea to move all data off the drive first, then copy it back after the fix is complete. This also fixes bad file problems that can contribute to the error.

The drive probably has it's "Dirty Bit" set. This is a single Hex value that tells Windows the file system is no good. Chkdsk and formatting will often reset the dirty bit, but sometimes not on the first attempt.

To see if the dirty bit is set:
Open a command prompt > Start > type: cmd > right-click on Command Prompt and choose “Run as administrator”
and then type:
fsutil dirty query x:
(substitute the letter "x" with the drive letter that is giving you problems)

If the dirty bit is set you will get a message that "Volume X is DIRTY".

Keep running chkdsk /r , or chkdsk /f /r until the dirty bit clears.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I had installed/uninstalled Comodo Firewall long ago. Did a search for "comodo" in registry. Could not find it. But there is an entry for cmdide.sys under C:/Windows/System 32/Drivers which is supposed to belong to the OS.

How do I get rid of Comodo from "Trusted Publishers" in Internet Explorer and Office 2007?

(Kaspersky moderators say it has nothing to do with KIS 2013)

Answer:Removing a "Trusted Publisher" from Internet Explorer and Office 2007

I'm not sure if this is a printing problem or a software problem, but here goes:
I used Microsoft Publisher to design an index card. I have 200 index cards to print now and I can't get the printer (Canon imageclass d320) to print them. I have tried printing them as "envelopes" because there is no "index" card setting, and that will not work. I also tried running them both directions (horizontal and vertical). The manuel says it will print index cards, but I'm wondering now if they are the kind that are on one sheet (like you print business cards).

Installed Publisher 2003 on new windows 7 computer and noticed that the "fill" command would only fill in white. Went to the "Paint" program that came installed on the computer and the same thing was true. Should I upgrade to Publisher 2007? If "Paint" doesn't work, why would an upgrade to Publisher 2007 work?

Answer:Paint, Publisher "fill" command doesn't work

Hello Vrnuta, welcome to the Seven Forums.

By default the fill color (color 2) in both Paint and Publisher is white. Are you sure you remembered to change it to color you want to use?

I am trying to upgrade my 3 year old VAIO VPC-EB series laptop to a new hard drive. I got a 7200 1TB HGST hard drive. The old hard drive was 500GB. On my first attempt, I decided to backup all of my user data on another drive, restore OS (Windows 7) from Sony's recovery DVDs which I made in advance, and then restore user data. Unfortunately, this does not work because the new hard drive is an "Advanced Format" drive. Once the fresh OS starts booting, the setup complains “Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware”. My understanding, Sony's answer to this issue is that they simply don't support upgrading hardware to an incompatible hard drive. It turns out I may need to install OS using a retail DVD, preferably with SP2. Well, I have several, but this doesn't work well either because for some reason the Sony VAIO activation key does not work with retail Windows 7 SP2 DVDs (and I don't have any other activation keys I can use).

Which finally brings me to the issue I mentioned in the title. The last thing I have tried is to simply create a system image of the entire install using Windows 7 backup, boot from Windows 7 recovery disk, and restore the system image onto the new hard drive. This worked pretty well until I discovered one strange issue. Whenever I run a Microsoft Windows program that requires administrator privileges (e.g. the microsoft management console mmc.exe) I get a warning message asking if I would like to r... Read more

I need to have 4 months (june, july, aug., sept) at the top of a publication and was wondering how to insert 4 monthly calendars. I'm highlighting every other Friday for these months and need to know how to download the calendars. I was able to create calendars using the "table" feature, but thought my calendar idea might be much easier for the future, as I have to do this every 4 months.

Answer:Solved: Inserting a "calendar" onto Microsoft Publisher page

You might try going to Microsoft's Template download area. There might be a design you can adapt for your use.

When I have finished the document and attempt to send the email, I get the message "Publisher has finished checking this story. Do you want it to check the rest of your publication?" This must be responded to before it will proceed to the next email address and it appears for every individual email. It is impossible to check no or yes for each of the hundreds of emails. :cry

Why is this happening? I have done several mail merges using Publisher 2007 and this is the first time I have run into this problem.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello. My computer recently (less than a day ago) started to display User Account Control prompts whenever I deleted or copied that weren't in the "Users" folder, such as the Program Files folder. I am using an Administrator account, and the User Account Control is set to notify when programs make changes to Windows but without dimming my desktop. Whenever I try to delete any type of file not in the Users folder, the User Account Control prompt pops up like in the attachment. I believe there is something wrong with the "File Operation" program, because I'd imagine it would be signed by Microsoft and would automatically be elevated to Admin status so the prompt shouldn't show in the first place. Clicking on "Change when these notifications appear" doesn't do anything, but I am able to copy/delete files after clicking "yes".

I'd really appreciate help, because it's getting annoying getting this prompt whenever I want to delete or copy a file, and this prompt never appeared before when I was just deleting a file until a day ago. I'm using Windows 7. I'm just using a Windows 8 RP theme. Also, I don't want to disable UAC, since it lowers security.

I feel perhaps something happened to that certain registry key or keys related to it. But I'm not sure.

EDIT: I figured out that something was wrong with shell32.dll, so I replaced it with an unmodified copy of the file from another computer and the prompt doesn't come up anymore.

Customer is trying to run an rdp connection on their desktop to a unc path with an executable file.   I get a popup that states "Open File - Security Warning", unknown publisher, and it give the unc path (\\server\filename.exe).  If I
click ok, the program executes ok.  The customer doesn't want this warning.  Have tried disabling UAC, putting .exe  in inclusion list in GPEDIT.MSC (User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components >Attachment Manager-
then set -Inclusion list).
Have also tried allowing "Launching applications and unsafe files " in Internet Options.
Lastly, tried enabling "Turn off the Security Settings Check feature " in GPEDIT.MSC.
At my wits end.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Answer:disable open file security warning, unknown publisher.

Go to Group Policy and then expand:
Local Computer Policy / User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Attachment Manager

On the right pane, double click
Inclusion list for low file types.
Include the file types such as
.exe;.bat;.reg;.vbs in the Options box.
Hope this helps.

On some machines in the company, a setup.exe runs fine but on many other machines the setup.exe shows a pop up that says:
Program name: setup.exe
Publisher: Unknown
File Origin: Network Drive

Why does my machine display Unknown publisher when I know it has a valid certificate because other machines show who the certificate is from and on this machine it doesn't. UAC is turned all the way up and the internet security zone is set to Medium/Low

Answer:setup.exe getting "Publisher: Unknown" when it has a valid certificate

Enable the Include all network paths (UNCs) setting in Internet Options applet.
Click Start, Run and type INETCPL.CPL
Select the Security tab, Local intranet

hi friends
I've had no changes to my system that I know of but "out of the blue" I have mmc.exe giving me an elevation request showing "unknown publisher" - hence a security or UAC issue.

can someone point me to a valid thread that will steer me through a REAL answer? I have perused the flood of such errors threaded onto microsoft forums and all end in about the same sorry state: "please do a system restore"..... "please run sfc /scannow and that will keep you busy for awhile - tada"

thanks for your help

Hi all,

I've recently noticed that when running many Windows programs with Administrator privileges that the UAC window that pops up displays the publisher as Unknown.

I can confirm from another PC that in the case of Command Prompt the publisher should display as Microsoft Corporation.

What could be causing this? Have I altered a Windows setting that resulted in this behaviour or is this indicative of malware or remote influence?

My router is password protected and I regularly run full system scans with a reputable, subscription-based anti-virus.

If this isn't related to windows settings and incorrect configurations then what could be causing this?

Thanks for your advice.

Can anyone provide me a way to remap the esc key to any key combination
i'd choose, during the booting process only.

Once i reached the desktop after the booting process, this tweak shouldn't
be active & escape would still act as esc .. .

This would allow me to erase sensitive data under autoexec.nt
without any way to escape the process & only i would know
which key combination interrupts the erasing process during
a restart or starting windows.

Hello, an annoying issue here.

One of the programs I am attempting to have working correctly works fine when "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" is checked off. However, upon exiting the program, it is rechecked by windows automatically.

I am running Windows 8.1 on this machine and (due to no Local Group Policy Editor) I have already attempted to modify the registry via this link:

Program Compatibility Assistant - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums

However, I'm not 100% sure if it worked or if it is applicable to this specific issue.

Thanks ahead of time for any help/insight

edit: I tried using a different (older) version of the program with no change

I see the same thing on a W7 Pro laptop - the same button that you have highlighted is disabled.

Try this:
Start > Control Panel
In the upper right corner, change "View by:" to small icons or large icons
Locate and click on "Mouse"

See if you can disable the touch pad from there.

Hey folks,

I seemed to have downloaded a whole medley of malware. The problem started with a system window which kept popping up, along with a slow computer and a disabled wireless connection. The system window said the following:

Critical System Warning!
Your system is probably infected with the lastest version of Spyware.Cyberlog-X.
Type: Spyware
Infected Length: 266,129 bytes
Risk: High
Affected Systems: Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, 2000 Server, Windows XP
Behavior: Cyberlog-X is a spyware program that monitors user activity, logs keystrokes, and track Web sites visited.
Symptims: Low Internet connection speed
Low System Performance
Secyrity center alerts
Strange pop up windows
Protection: Click OK to download antispyware software

Additionally, there were two or three other unique balloon-style warnings that would pop up out of the system tray. Can't recall what they said.

I followed the malware removal instructions on this site, and each step seemed to find a whole bunch of problems. While the symptoms are no longer present, I want to be sure that I caught everything. Would someone mind taking a look at my log files to make sure?

Thanks in advance, I'm very grateful for the help!

When I open an old (2003) Exel-file with VBA-code in it with Excel 2007, I get one of these two responses
and I do not know what causes Excel to make different choices
A Dialog Box: "Microsoft Excel Security Notce"
This one is very similar to the one in Excel 2003 and that is how I want Excel to behave.
The user has to “Enable Macros” to go on and work with the file.

"Security Warning"
This one is new in 2007 and the user can continue to work with the file even if he does not see the security warning.
That means that VBA-code that I (the programmer) want to run when the file is opened, does not execute.

My problem is that I do not know what causes the two different behaviors and cannot force Excel to open files with the first Dialog box.
Can you?

Answer:Solved: Excel "Security Notice" vs "Security Warning"

I think most of the info will be in the dailog screen, i'sn't there's more text in the dialog box than the text you mentioned?

I think if you read through it it'll become clear.

It has all to do with the improved Security settings with 2007 and up

I want to combine 2 MS Publisher 2007 files with the pub extemsion to create a single file with the pub extension. The two files are formatted by publisher. I am a newcomer to publisher and took over the task from a member who is no longer with the non-profit so I cannot ask him for help. I have looked at some help instructions but I cannot get them to work (may not understand the instructions).

Answer:MS Publisher 2007 Combine 2 "pub" files

From looking around:
a) Hard way: open three instances of Publisher file 1, file 2 and blank new file
Figure out how many pages the combined document will be and make that many blank pages. Then start copying and pasting.
b) Easy way: spend $20 for this program
lots of sites end up mentioning the same program.

I'm running Windows 8.1 and I have an old version of photoshop elements in my x86 program files (it's elements 4.0, please don't laugh). I have UAC on the next to last setting before disabling it altogether. When I launch elements, UAC asks me if I trust it because it's an unknown publisher. I don't want to disable UAC, but I want it to trust elements and not popup the "are you really sure" box each time.

Answer:UAC-How do I "trust" a program from an unknown publisher?

Hello Jigawatt, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Would that be an "Open File - Security Warning" dialog prompt like below instead of UAC?

If so, then unblocking the file should stop it.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at, or Hotmail at

I used to be able to start Money 2005 without a security box popping up. Now it says, "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" I don't have the installation CD as it was pre-installed when I bought the PC. Once I click to "Run" it, it goes through ok. I have Windows xp sp2 and IE 7.0 Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Publisher could not be verified

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced
Scroll down to the subhead "Security" and put a checkmark in the first three boxes.

I am having several issues? It started by giving me a Generic Host Process error that reads, ?Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.? This is followed by the ?NT Shutdown error? which reads:

?System Shutdown This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM?

This also displays a 60 second countdown before it shuts down. I was able to stop the shutdown by entering the command prompt and typing ?shutdown ?a? but that is only a temporary solution. The virus has now turned my desktop background black with a grey box in the center with flashing ?Warning? text and a message that reads:

?Warning Dangerous Spyware Many viruses were found on your computer such as : Trojan horse, PassCapture, etc. Your personal information can fall into in the ?third hands?. Please check up the computer with a special software. Thank? (It wouldn?t let me change my desktop background in the Display Properties)

This is partnered with a pop-up balloon stemming from a red circle with an X in the center; the balloon reads: ?Warning! Security report Your computer is infected! It is recommended to start Spyware cleaner tool.? After which it tries to connect to the Internet to download more spyware.

Also, when I try to run SpyBot or any other Spyware removal programs I get an error message that... Read more

Yesterday, I got a virus which changed the background of my Windows XP to a blue background with the message "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

Also, my screensaver has been changed to a fake BSOD and then the Windows startup screen which is highly irritating! On top of this, I am being bombarded with pop ups and redirections when using the internet.

Yesterday I started getting a popup claiming to be from "Security Center" and telling me that I have no antivirus software (I have AVG) and instructiong me to download certain files to fix the problem. The files are named:

Antivirus Security Package
MS Antivirus
The Spybot Antivirus
Spyshredder Professional Antispyware Suite

At the same time I got a series of warnings (which I ignored) and icons kept appearing on my desktop that gave links to porn websites. I ran AVG and Ad-Aware. both cleaned up a number of issues that were not there the day before. The porn links are gone but the so-called security center warning continues.

I ran Hijack This yesterday and again today and found a number of suspicious entries. I'm tempted to just get rid of them, but I would rather have someone take a look so that I can do this the right way. I have other minor issues that bug me, but I want to take care of the major stuff first. (Note: there are three other people who use this PC, all of whom claim innocence. Yeah, right)

Thanks for your help.

I downloaded a virus yesterday (8/10) trying to open a video of the opening ceremony of the Olympics (I do not remember the exact URL). The virus was disguised as a video codec for Windows Mediaplayer. After I downloaded the file, a blue screen with a warning in a yellow box replaced my desktop image. The warning says:

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer. Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

I have tried to remove it with McAfee Antivirus and with a Virus Removal tool I got from my University, but neither of these was able to remove the program. Can you help me?

I attached the two log files below. If you need any additional information, please let me know.

Earlier this evening I randomly got 3 or 4 pop-up windows that were followed by a blue screen.
In a panic or something I pressed enter and the blue screen went away. Everything closed immediately by itself and then showed my desktop.
Ever since, my background is blue with a yellow box that reads
"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!
Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

I haven't noticed any difference in how my computer is running, other than the fact that I have no desktop control.
When I right-click my desktop I can't change my wallpaper or any desktop settings.

I keep getting blue screens that go away after I press enter, although, my computer did shut off after I got one of the screens.

I've read posts relating to this but tried following the steps and things were too different.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Hello, and welcome.

Scans are best run in normal mode unless otherwise instructed.

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Welcome to TSF.

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

I am running a Toshiba SLI1 notebook and find myself unable to use my PC due to a warning after I enter my password while the files and programs are loading. Everything seems to be normal, but I can't be sure. Within 30 seconds of booting up, a message pops up indicating that there is a critical warning and windows is now shutting down. A new window follows, but I can't be sure of the code displayed because within very little time, my computer is already restarting. It first happened after the installation of a few programs used to convert and download viral videos to one's hard-disk. I don't know if the warning is connected with this, but it seems an odd coincidence. A prompt (after download the programs used to convert/download the virals) instructed me to restart my PC, but being impatient, I didn't do it until the next day. This is when the warning started. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So... my Windows Defender gave me a warning earlier ago. It said I had an infected system file named "hosts". I already removed the file from my computer, but it can still be found on my history. Look:

What is that malware about anyway? I know I already removed it, but I worry a lot about my computer so I want to make sure everything is fine.

So... can someone tell me why I got it? Is it really dangerous?

Answer:Windows Defender gave me a malware warning (file name = "hosts")

First of all the threat has been removed. You are no longer in danger from that particular threat. Malware is used to describe harmful software that has been installed on your computer. It can be very dangerous with the capability of hacking into your system, harvesting passwords, bank accounts, etc. In your case it was a medium threat. It usually means, pop ups, advertisements. Since it has been uninstalled it is no longer a threat.
For the future, download the free Malwarebytes and scan once a week.
Be sure that you have a quality Anti Virus such as Avast.
Stay away from sites that may be dangerous. Those are the ones that you really want to visit.

Hi, i am new to this. I am having this problem with a IE popup this few days.

What happen is, whenever I restart my cpu, before I can click on anything else, these IE popups will appear. A popup appear. Window title is "* * * *** System Warning! Microsoft Internet Explorer" and "Warning: PC Update - Microsoft Internet Explorer". I can leave my cpu on and it will keep popping up. Can get over 20 of the same windows though I am not browsing (in fact, not working with my cpu at all)

Don't know if this is created by the same problem.. that is, when I am bhrowsing with IE, I get redirected to very often.

I have got Ad-aware6 installed on my cpu, but this time round, it is not working to remove my problems completely. Tried fixing with Spybot too. But still problem of pop up exists. Tried installing MSN toolbar hoping this will block popup... but it will not work after cpu restarts.

Big Kudos to anybody who can solve this one! Very little/nothing on Google or microsoft support site.
Here's the problem:

I'm helping a family member who has a new Dell PC with Windows XP Home, Outlook Express 6.
Every time they close Outlook Express, the following Warning pops up:
To free up disk space OE can compact messages. This may take a few minutes. There are 2 options - OK and Cancel.

Here is the rub: We've closed the warning, or we've clicked OK, or we've clicked cancel, we've checked the box that says don't ask me again....these warnings continue to come up next time (EVERY time) Outlook Express is closed.

This is a senior citizen who has, maybe, 20 email messages and no shortage of memory or disk space. I want to prevent this warning from coming up ever again. How do I do it? Is there some default I can change somewhere?
