Program icon pinned to taskbar not replaced by active program button

Question: Program icon pinned to taskbar not replaced by active program button

Until recently, whenever I opened a program by clicking on the program icon pinned to the taskbar, that icon was replaced by the active program button. This is the behavior I want in order to keep the taskbar uncluttered. However, I recently mistakenly unpinned an icon for Mozilla Thunderbird and after re-pinning the program start icon, now the active program button appears in addition to the startup icon rather than replacing it. I have pinned and unpinned the program several times, and even after a restart of the machine, the same result persists. The problem seems to be limited to Thunderbird, at least in my limited research.

If I pin other new programs to the taskbar, the expected replacement behavior occurs, even after un-pinning and re-pinning, e.g for Microsoft Word.

If I un-pin and re-pin programs that have been pinned to the taskbar from before the time this issue occurred with Thunderbird, the expected replacement behavior occurs, e.g Mozilla Firefox

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have about 10 programs Pinned to my Taskbar, but when i'm working at speed i keep clicking the wrong ones due to some of the Icons being quite alike

The programs that are active highlight these buttons by making it slightly white in one corner, is there any way to change the appearance of the buttons on the Taskbar when it is in use? So the ones that are 'active' have a bright red background or something so they stand out more ? it would be such a help!

I changed some of my default program icons such as firefox and in the start menu or when it's pinned to the taskbar it shows up changed how i want it, but if i don't have it pinned and open it I see the normal firefox icon. This only happens with a few programs so far I've seen it when trying Chrome, Firefox and Itunes.

Answer:Program icons appear different when pinned to taskbar and unpinned

Hi Eddie794, when you change a pinned Icon, you usually need to Unpin and Close the program before it will take effect to change the Icon, then you can repin it.

How did you change the Icon, did you change it from a Shortcut on your Desktop, a shortcut in the Start Menu, or from the Taskbar itself?

See if making another Shortcut for the Program and changing the Shortcut's Icon helps.

Go to the Application's location and Right Click on the .exe and select Create Shortcut
A popup will ask warning you that you cannot save there and will save to the Desktop instead, click Yes.
Right Click on the new Icon's Shortcut from the Desktop and select Properties.
In the Shortcut Properties Box select Change Iconand click Browse to go to the location of the Icon you want to change.
Repin iTunes or whatever program it is and the Icon should change:
Program Locations:
iTunes = C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe
Firefox = C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
Chrome = C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

   Note
The locations may vary because these are the 32 Bit locations and according to your System Specs you are running 64 Bit.
If none of this helps, try rebuilding your Icon Cache and try attempting this again

I've read many posts about hidden icons or icons showing wrong images etc, but my problem seem to be different from others.
When I log on after a reboot, I only see the search icon and the Task View icon in the task bar even though I have several other programs pinned.
If I open a pinned program I see it in the task bar and have the option to unpin the r-click menu, but if I close it, the icon disappears again.
If I open a program that is not pinned, and I r-click and pin the program, the task bar seems to 'refresh' and suddenly I see all my pinned programs in the task bar - and they all work when clicking on them.

Can anyone tell me how I can make the task bar show the pinned programs without having to pin a new program after every reboot?

Thanks in advance

1 2 3 4 5 (each number represent a program pinned to taskbar)
Let's assume 1 is the program to be re-moved, when i re-move 1 to 3 it became like this:

Hey guys,

I've seen threads on this subject before on here, but here's another. I've had my Windows 7 PC for a year and a half now, and the entire time I've had it I've had Firefox pinned to the taskbar, and when I click on the icon, the program opens AND the icon stays there on the taskbar. It has been like this since I've had the computer. This is how I want it.

I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but today I updated Firefox to version 14, and now when I click the pinned taskbar icon, the program opens and the taskbar icon for Firefox disappears. I know you can set up a quicklaunch workaround (I've done that, but I'm just not satisfied), I know you can click this and that to get a new window to open, but all I want is my computer back the way it has been for the last 18 months.

PLEASE for the love of God tell me there's a way I can get the functionality that I had back. I've read in certain threads that Windows 7 is designed for them to disappear when opened. It was never this way on my PC and I just want my setup back how I had it. I tried rolling back to FF 13 to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I hope you are doing well.

When I open a program that has been pinned to the taskbar, the icon for that program disappears immediately. I understand that this is a feature of Windows 7, but my girlfriend finds it rather annoying. Is there any way to stop this behavior? By the way, I am using the "Never Combine" option for my taskbar.

For example, the first icon pinned in the taskbar is Mozilla Firefox. When I open Firefox, the icon disappears, and only the other pinned icons remain. I would like to change this behavior so that the icon, once pinned, will remain, even if I open the program associated with it.

Thanks,
Vic

Hi everyone,

My apologies if this has been brought up already. I did some searching, but couldn't find anything relevant.

I've been doing a lot to my installation of Windows 7 lately. Tweaking it and adjusting things to really customize my experience. I'm not sure if this was always there, but just recently, I've actually noticed it:

The situation is, I have an open program on my taskbar (ex. Firefox), which is pinned. I also have other programs pinned to my taskbar, like Thunderbird. Initially, after I boot up the computer, switching between pinned programs is fine. It takes one click on the icon (on the taskbar) to open up the minimized program. However, eventually, I find that it takes two or more clicks to open that program. The first click does nothing, then the second or third click finally maximizes the program.

After becoming annoyed by this, I started to carefully watch what I was doing to see if I could catch any kind of connection between my working habits and the incidence of the glitch. I was able to reproduce the problem in one way.

I often keep multiple Wordpad documents open, which I take notes in. I noticed that after a fresh reboot, everything would work fine (single clicks only necessary to open minimized programs) until I had Wordpad open. As soon as I had one or two Wordpad documents open, programs would start to become less responsive in terms of maximizing them from the taskbar. Again, it would take two clicks on the respective ic... Read more

Answer:Double Click Required to Maximize Running Pinned Program on Taskbar

Heh.

I might have found it. I think it might be the 'Taskbar Thumbnail Preview'. If I click too fast between windows before the taskbar thumbnail preview appears, sometimes, the program won't maximize. Maybe that's what was actually happening and I was just making false assumptions about specific programs throwing things off track?

At any rate, I just installed '7+ Taskbar Tweaker' and disabled thumbnail previews. So far, things are going well -- no errors to report. I'll report back after I spend another day or two clicking around, as usual.

If anyone has any other advice in the meantime, I'd be thankful for it!

Thanks again.

This problem is hard to describe. I have the Word (2007) icon pinned to the taskbar in Windows 7, and previously when I right clicked it, I could see the list of recently used docs, and I had a few docs permanently pinned to the list. Worked great! However, recently the MRU list and the pinned items disappeared from the Word icon list. Now, when I right click the Word icon on the taskbar, I only see the following items listed:

Microsoft Office Word 2007
Unpin this program from taskbar
Close window.

There's nothing else listed! This problem only seems to affect Word. Other programs (such as other Office apps like Excel) are not affected.

I ran an Office repair but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!Darryl Gittins

Answer:The MRU and pinned items disappeared from the Word icon that's pinned to Windows 7 taskbar

Hi,If the issue occurs recently, a system restore might be of help. Is there any change before the issue occurs?By default, most of the jump list history is saved under %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations as *.automaticDestinations-ms files. For Example, adecfb853d77462a.automaticDestinations-ms is for WORD. The Item that pinned to taskbar was saved under %APPDATA%\\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBarClick Start, copy "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations" (without quotation marks) to the search command line and Enter. In the open window, find the adecfb853d77462a.automaticDestinations-ms, what is the "Date modified". Right click on it and choose "restore previous versions" if there is any. Close the window and check the result. If still no go, simply delete it. Meanwhile, delete all the files under the folder TaskBar too. Close the window and recheck.

My 2 towers are both using Yahoo Mail, FIREFOX 2.2. In tower one the Yahoo icon is in the START menu which I dragged onto the desktop. It also appears on the PROGRAMS list. For tower two none of this is true/ How do I find the missing icon for the Yahoo mail so I can drag it onto the desktop? I NEED to be able to open it without using FOX, which has and continues to have issues lately. Very annoying. I need a solution! Apparently I cannot "OVERWRITE" the program nor can I find a way to create an icon. Generaly I would remove and reinstall a program. In this case I cannot do that. It is NOT in the programs list, and www.yahoo.com automatically displys YAHOO MAIL. From there I can sign up as a new used. When done I am asked to sign in, NO icon. YET AGAIN! Help me!

Hello, this is my first time using this forum so I apologize if I do something wrong.

So normally, whenever I hover my mouse over a program located on the taskbar, I get a preview screen showing what is currently being viewed on that program. I can still get that, however, it never shows itself above the active program (last program I've clicked).

This happens with each and every program I have opened and tried. I tested the method of having the active program sitting in a place where it would only slightly conceal the preview (not maximized). Then having inactive programs (I've clicked on something else besides them last) behind the active one and the preview. Then I can see that that the preview will cover all inactive programs but the active program will still cover the preview.

I hope I've detailed what's happening well enough. I don't remember when this first started happening but I do know that it is not supposed to function like this. The preview should always be visible and on top no matter if there are active programs or not.

I also tried to get a picture of it happening, but it's kinda hard to take a picture of something that requires the active program to not hide itself (like snipping tool does).

I have nicely pinned all my key stuff (Google Calendar, Gmail, google maps, etc. to the Win10 taskbar, but everything I open opens in Chrome.
If I click my iTunes taskbar-icon then iTunes opens and its taskbar-icon brightens and a little blue bar appears on its taskbar's bottom edge--iTunes opens FROM the iTunes icon.
If I click Google Calendar, G-mail, maps, etc., these icons remain black, and all this opened windows just stack up in Chrome very messily.
The intention was to have them open in Chrome but FROM their taskbar-icon, so they're nice and neat and separate and always right there conveniently.

Hey everyone,
Is there a way to change how Windows XP (SP2) orients the buttons on the taskbar? The grouping works like this:

I have Outlook open and about 3-5 other programs each with their own button. When I go to open an email, a new window opens and it squeezes in next to the Outlook button while shifting the others over.

Is there a way to set it up so the newly opened button goes to the end of the list?

Hello to all,
I can use some help in understanding and fixing a vanished program icon. I'm running APC Personal 2.2 on W7 Ultimate 64 bit. Up until I noticed the other day the APC icon which was customized to show on taskbar did and was. Yesterday I noticed the icon gone. I ran it manually and the last recorded event was 9/1/10 and there have been at least one since then. I turned off the display icon and then turned it on an it appeared on the taskbar. Rebooted, not there. Used CCleaner to check startup programs and it showed that the program was listed to start. I disabled it and then re-enabled it and got a pop up from my firewall about it contacting home. Rebooted and it still did not appear.
I feel as if the program is not running until I turn it on manually even though it says it is in the configurations section of the program. Any help/assistance or opinions welcome. Thanks

Usually moving the item to another folder/drive etc

Windows also has an auto disk/desktop clean facility, whereby it will remove icons/shortcuts from the desktop

It could have been triggered by an M/S update!

Why dont you right click on the program icon in it's folder, scroll down to "send shortcut to desktop"

Folks,

I'm running a background monitoring program, CAM v2.1.5 by NZXT (for my AIO liquid cooler). When I minimize the program, the taskbar icon defaults to the Windows system icon.

1. If I right click the program's taskbar icon (the defaulted Windows system icon), I can select "pin this program to the taskbar". There is no change.

2. If I then right click the program's taskbar icon (the defaulted Windows system icon), I can select "unpin this program from the taskbar". At that point, the CORRECT icon appears.

3. I can then maximize and minimize the program from the taskbar and the correct icon remains.

The program is set to autostart when my machine is turned on.

How do I get the correct icon to appear on the taskbar without having to pin and unpin?

Additional information: The Start Menu icon is also corrupted. Right clicking the start menu icon, properties, shortcut, shows the proper "looking" icon, yet the icon on the Start Menu is the default Windows system icon.

Choosing the 64x64 sized icon from the program's install folder as the start menu shortcut icon seems to have fixed the behavior.

Thanks,
Ken

I have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.

Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?

Thanks

I just want to ask a simple question regarding PC taskbar.

When I start a program, its icon will show at the taskbar, for example I play LoL, I will have a LoL Icon on my taskbar to show that this program is running.

Now my question is, how to I hide this icon (or any icon in my case) so that it will not show itself on the taskbar? That I could just use Alt tab to get back to it.

Thank you.

I've spent last 3 days trying to google it out. Something i realized:

3. It's not the icon of filetype

Would appreciate any kind of help.

Hello all

Sorry if this is already a much discussed topic but...

First to state, I am using Win7 in as bout a classic format as I can, no aero and everything else basic. Basically for the interface the thing looks & works as much like 95 as I can.

As well I am using the never combine option on the task bar.

So how can I stop the upward grouped roll out of all the other open window taskbar icons I have from the same program when ever I roll over any of the taskbar icons

In other words I, might have about 6 windows of my browser open, all at different sites, and all being represented by a task bar Icon.

Then if I roll over any of these, I get this menu that jumps up to the top of each one, showing again all the taskbar icons I already have being shown on the horizontal taskbar.

Basically these are not needed as they are all already accessible, as well this menu often blocks my view from the screen at being able to see what's on the page at the same time I am trying to decide which window I might like to reopen. So all in all its a complete pain.

Hopefully this is something that can be done

Thanks for any help

Does the same problem also happen with Word?
You could try repairing your office installation.
Right-click on the Start Button and select Control Panel>Programs and Features; wait for the list of installed programs to populate, then highlight Microsoft Office; click CHANGE up above the window, then REPAIR. You may have 2 repair options; if so, try the local one first and see if that does the trick.

Why is this the case and how do I fix it please?

Answer:Icon pinned to taskbar and cannot be unpinned

Hello Nick, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sometimes a simple restart will get rid of them if you haven't already tried that.

Another option is to reinstall the program the icon is for, unpin the icon, then uninstall the program.

Hope this helps,

I have included some screenshots. When I try and pin the steam.exe application to the taskbar, it works, but has that default no image/icon attached image.

However, as you can see in the open window, the steam.exe application does show that icon as part of it.

Any thoughts? Kind of driving me nuts even though its not really a functional problem. Thanks.

Answer:No icon when steam is pinned to taskbar

Welcome to Seven forums. Try right clicking the shortcut and selecting properties, under the general tab select change icon, navigate to the steam icon and select that. It should change the icon.

New user of Windows 7 here. I have the Internet Explorer icon pinned to my taskbar. However, when I click on the IE icon, it changes from an icon to a bar representing the IE window that has opened. I'm wanting to keep the single icon on the taskbar, even when IE is open, like you were able to in XP. Any suggestions?

I just reinstalled Windows 10, and Chrome's behavior has changed. Previously, when I clicked on the pinned Chrome icon in the taskbar and a Chrome tab opened, the original pinned icon was the only Chrome icon on the taskbar; and if I clicked on that original icon, I returned to the last open Chrome tab. I have posted this issue previously, and the only solution I have received is to move the new Chrome icon into one of the first 10 spots on the Taskbar so it then responds to a Win-Key + number keyboard shortcut. However, not all my pinned programs in the taskbar react like Chrome does. Some do not open a second icon on the taskbar and continue to connect to the instance of the program I have already opened. Hi all,

I'm relatively new to these "new" (I guess not so new anymore!) Windows platforms, I've used Windows XP for close to 10 years now and just recently made the swap to Windows 7 Premium. Needless to say, despite the fact that most of the features and tools are similar, they function very differently from older Windows versions and I haven't quite figured out how to customize some of the new features.

Anyways, my question is relatively simple (I apologize if it belongs in a different forum, please move if necessary). I've attempted to "pin" my iTunes icon to the taskbar, and although it is there, I want Windows to associate that icon with the application when it is actually open. Currently, Windows decides to add an additional icon to my taskbar when I open iTunes, and I would much prefer Windows to simply use the icon I have pinned instead of making another icon. When I pinned Google Chrome to the taskbar, it automatically adjusted this setting, but after quickly searching both Windows Help and google, I can't seem to find a method to do this with iTunes.

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I've gone through all taskbar and control panel options and can't seem to figure out how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Answer:Help With Pinned iTunes Taskbar Icon Customization

Welcome to the Seven Forums, jiggs!

I had not investigated this until I saw your query so I did a little experimenting.

First I dragged the iTunes shortcut to the taskbar and pinned it:
Then I opened iTunes through the pinned icon resulting in the scenario you have presented:
Next, I closed iTunes and unpinned the shortcut:
I then sought out the iTunes.exe program in the "Program Files (x86)" folder (this is for Win x64, Win x86 will find the iTunes.exe in the "Program Files" folder):
Once having located the iTunes.exe, I dragged it to the taskbar and pinned it:
After opening the pinned iTunes.exe program I still had not found the solution you were seeking:
So I decided to unpin the iTunes.exe program I had just pinned to the taskbar without closing iTunes (this could have been done earlier with the pinned shortcut as well but, like I said, I was experimenting):
I then pinned the open iTunes still in the taskbar to the taskbar:
After closing iTunes, I then have this (of course):

Then, reopening iTunes from the now pinned icon I get...viola!:
Note: I have my settings in the taskbar set to "Combine when taskbar is full" but the results will be the same if you have it set to any of the other options:
To make a long story short, launch iTunes with your initially pinned icon, pin the resulting icon to the taskbar and unpin the initial icon. Or, just open iTunes and pin it to the taskbar while you have it open.

That should s... Read more

Using Windows 10's Weather gadget as an example, it directly allows you to pin it to the Start Menu. But I wanted it pinned to the taskbar instead, so I managed to find the menu with all the gadges and was allowed from there to copy a shortcut to the desktop. So far so good. I changed its icon to match the theme of the other icons on my taskbar. Again no problem. However, when I went to add it to the taskbar, although it allows me to do that, the old icon shows up on the taskbar. Is there any way to keep it from reverting to the old icon when pinned to the taskbar?

Yes. (Sort of!)
You would be creating an 'Implicit App Shortcut' which is, in a sense, a shortcut that points to a shortcut that points to an App! However, it creates a 'second instance icon' when opened!

I have Windows 7 RC installed on two different computers and this has happened on both.

I'll install a program I use a lot, pin it to the taskbar and some of the icons will lose their original icon after awhile. It doesn't seem to effect the operation of the program or the shortcut to the program, it's just sort of annoying to have to curse over the pinned program to know what it is, instead of just being able to tell by its icon. The programs this happens to are not the same from machine to machine, either. If that makes sense.

Has anyone else come across this and were you able to remedy the issue?

Cheers!

Please check the following settings; you must have "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu" checked for the taskbar to work as designed. Not sure if this would cause your icon issue, but it is related.

In IE9 you can pin your favourite websites to the taskbar. If it is a large commercial site it may have its own Icon and that is displayed in the Taskbar. However you are meant to be able to change the icon, so for sites without an icon that just display the MS "e" symbol you can design a specific icon so you can identify the sites easily.

I thought that to do this you go to the properties window by right clicking on the icon then right clicking on the page name in the popup window. One of the tabs should then allow you to change the icon. I know I sucessfully did this in the beta, but I am not seeing the tab to do it in the full product.

I must be missing something, but cannot see what.

I bought a HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15 which came with Windows 8. My problem is that in both Windows 8 and 8.1 when I have a program open, something is interrupting the program. The title at the top of the program dims showing it's not the active program for about half a second before resuming. It does this all the time and interferes when I try to type anything. I have not figured out what the problem is. I thought at first it was 8.1 so reverted to windows 8 and then reinstalled the entire system. It still happens. I cannot figure out what is causing the interference. Someone suggested it might be a compatibility issue with Windows 8 and 3rd party programs.

I pinned folders to the current windows explorer folder on the taskbar then after a reboot or something they disapeared.

Answer:Pinned folders in Explorer taskbar icon disappear

What method are you using? Is the taskbar locked? To find out, click in an empty space on the task bar and uncheck the "lock the taskbar" box.

Have you tried?:If the program is already running, right-click the program's button on the taskbar (or drag the button toward the desktop) to open the program?s Jump List, and then click Pin this program to taskbar.
If the program isn't running, click Start, find the program?s icon, right-click the icon, and then click Pin to Taskbar.
Also, try dragging the program's shortcut from the desktop or Start menu to the taskbar.
After trying these, are you able to pin?

Cheers,

I've been using a browser named 'SRWare Iron' for a while now with no issues. However, recently I attempted to update the program to it's newest version and that version was problematic in a number of ways so I went back to the previous one. Though now, I've got pinned the browser 'SRWare Iron' to the taskbar, but whenever I click it it creates a second icon and operates entirely from the second icon.

Before you say it, I've tried the most common solution, pinning the icon that appears and unpinning the old one. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to solve the problem as it always brings up a second icon. Do you guys know if there's a more advanced way to see what's happening with my taskbar?

On my dv6t laptop, I let the HP auto-update software install whatever it wanted to update. After it did it, an icon related to Simplepass is pinned to the taskbar and I can't get rid of it.  Right-clicking and selecting "Unpin this program from the taskbar" does nothing.  How do I get rid of it. I want to keep the program. But don't want the icon pinned to the taskbar.  Then, when I opened Microsoft Excel, it said that a hardware change had been detected and that I have to re-activate. Why would this happen?  How can I keep it from happening again. Is it better to just never let HP update anything?

Solved!
View Solution.

Answer:Simplepass update, icon now permanently pinned on taskbar

I tried something along the lines of what aperez1221 suggested and it seems to be an acceptable solution. I wasn't sure what you meant by "unchecking the simple pass site box."  So I opend SimplePass and went into the settings.  I unchecked everything under "Enable Features' and then tried re-checking them one by one.  I determined that disabling only LaunchSite solves the problem and seems to leave the program working the way it did before.  So thank you aperez1221 for pointing me in the right direction.  I'm not sure what I'm missing out on by disabling LaunchSite.  This solution may not work for anyone who uses the features enabled by LaunchSite. I haven't figured out what those features are. It seems to be QuickLaunch that lets me swipe a finger to open a program or a web site (in a new browswer window). And I can still login to websites using my finger as well.  So with just LaunchSite disabled, SimplePass does what it did before and no longer re-pins itself to the taskbar.  I've left this open for now in case someone has a solution that doesn't require disabling LaunchSite, whatever that does.

Hello,

I notice that in Windows 7, when you right click a pinned program to the taskbar, the menu to select options is many pixels away from the program. In previous versions of Windows, the 'Close' function in the menu was a single pixel away from the cursor when you clicked, so you could close programs quickly. Now, in 7, I always have to move my mouse so far away to click the close option. Is there any way to change this?

Example (what all menus used to look like):

Hi Guys.

About 2 weeks ago the Explorer icon on the Taskbar where you can pin up to 12 shortcuts started randomly disappearing causing me to drag 'n drop them again. After about the 5th or 6th time of them disappearing and replacing them I am now only able to pin 4. I've installed no additional software during the period in which this error started appearing except a Windows Update released on June 10th, which I might add, the random disappearance of those Pinned icons had been happening. It wasn't until the 16th that it would no longer allow me to pin more than 4.

Does anyone here know where in the registry this setting is created so I can fix it to use 12 again instead of 4? I've searched the registry for Explorer Pinned, Taskbar Pinned, Taskbar Frequent, etc., all to no avail.

Here is a screenshot of what I'm speaking:

Before the 16th I could put 12 Pinned shortcuts and then they just stopped.

Thank you in advance.

Hello again.. My Google Chrome is pinned to my taskbar and when I click the icon it has always opened a window within that icon.. all of a sudden it started creating a separate one.

I found a thread about this issue on this forum and it seemed to be solved with the solution below. This solution does not work for me as there isn't two Google Chrome.ink when I get to UserPinned\Taskbar. Also when I right click on the new icon and select 'Pin this program to taskbar'.. It no longer has the right click option of 'New INCOGNITO Window'.

I found another solution online saying to delete the UserData from Chrome but my Chrome isn't synced up with my gmail account because it has caused problems in the past so I have no way of retrieving my bookmarks, extensions, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!!

Welcome to Seven Forums juiceimus. The fact you don't have it synced makes it difficult, as that is a fix. I have 2 ideas for you:

Right click the Chrome shortcut> Properties> Compatibility Tab> Change compatibility to Vista

See if that works (you could try other compatibility choices as well. This would be a workaround as the fix is something you can't do

Also, you might try unpinning the icon, Open Chrome from the start menu by right clicking the Chrome icon and choosing Run as administrator. Now pin that instance of Chrome to the taskbar, and see of that helps.

i'm using an "application shortcut" via chrome. i logged into my gmail account and then set up the shortcut through the chrome menu system. this put an icon on my desktop and it used the gmail fav icon that the browser displays. this icon is fugly. it's way too low res for use on my taskbar.

so i found a better icon and changed the icon of the shortcut on the desktop. then i pinned the shortcut to the taskbar.

for some reason, the icon is randomly returning to the cached fav icon version.

any ideas why this is happening?

MS Intellipoint is programmed to abort the Key Assignment popup menu (in Program-specific settings) when an "Esc" keystroke is received from the keyboard. But "Esc" is what I want to record into its Key Assignment cell, and assign that to a particular mouse button. Every time I hit the keyboard Esc button when in that cell, the menu immediately closes without recording anything.

Esc is not part of Intellipoint's list of present commands you can select with a simple mouse click, so there's no alternative but to go to the Key... Keystroke Assignment popup menu to try to get it programmed in. I've tried entering the Ascii-equivalent Alt-027 from the numpad and Ctrl-[ alternatives in that cell, with no luck.

Anyone know of a prefix or alternative code that can be used to get the Esc signal recorded in the Key Assignment menu? Many thanks.

Hey there,

I used to have a shortcut of Firefox on my taskbar. It was just the icon of Firefox and when I clicked on it, a NEW program tab would open in the taskbar. Just like when you, for example, open a folder, a new program tab opens in the taskbar. The nice thing was, this shortcut in the taskbar stayed where it was. But now I reinstalled Firefox and when I pin the .exe to the taskbar and click on it, it "transforms" into a new program tab in the taskbar. When I close every Firefox window, it returns to the single icon again. What did I do wrong? If you dont know what I mean, it used to be like a Quick Launch bar (with just one icon though) just that it acted like a pinned program (when I right clicked it, I could choose "unpin" "open firefox" etc). I found something via google that suggests making a real quick launch bar: Add the Quick Launch Bar to the Taskbar in Windows 7 - How-To Geek
But thats not what I mean. Though it is similar, its not the same.
Any idea?

I have a problem with the underline beneath the active taskbar icons. I find them hard to see and they get hidden by my tablets case.

So I moved the taskbar to the top of the screen. Should have known, because of syncing this automatically moved the taskbar on my desktop as well, but what really choked me was the underline became an overline and its still on the outside and still hidden by the tablets case.

At least it proved its possible to have the line on top, but how? Registry tweak anyone?

1.Get the WMP icon in your desktop. (start > all programs > right click on wmp icon in programs list > send to > desktop.)

2. Right click on it > properties >change icon > browse (to the icon you want)

3. Open wmp , now the icon is in taskbar. Right click > pin the program to taskbar

You are done.

My side buttons work fine. My touch screen scrolls, and lets me open programs. But I can't exit out. I can't get further and further into to programs (ex. open outlook, open an email, send a response) but then I can't exit. I'm stuck there until I power down and restart. this is a nokia lumia by the way.

Answer:My return/exit program button and windows button won't work, what should I do?

There are many Lumia models...
Is it an 830 by any chance? With a screen protector? It is a known issue that the capacitive buttons on 830 lack sensitivity and a screen protector may block their use.

Baby Geek still needs help! My friend asked me to load "Publisher Pro" into my computer in hopes I could make a flyer for her. I guess "PP" has nice pickures of dogs in it. Anyway, I loaded the first half of the software provided and my Disk Drive broke. Couldn't get it open to save my life. Ok, replaced said disk drive "56x". Now, the program still will not load. The screen goes black.

What do you think is going on? I called the company who makes the software and asked for the 1st and 4th disks in case it was the actual disks that got ruined or something.

Actually, Im not sure that my computer sees the disk drive? May be it would be nice if I could ask it to run disk drive from the start menu. I dont see it in the programs.

Thank you for your help.

Hi guys. I noticed that in Win7, the applications in the new Quick Launch move if you run one of the applications in the "Pinned to Taskbar" section. For example, if I have Windows Explorer and Firefox next to each other and I click to open Windows Explorer, the Firefox icon will slide far to the right so that it's after the Windows Explorer task in the taskbar.

Is there a way to keep the new quicklanuch icons in Win7 in the same place, like WinXP?

I am using Win 10 Pro on a Dell Inspiron 660 Desktop with Intel i5 CPU. It was installed as an upgrade in place, not a clean install. I am also using Start10 from Stardock Software.

When I enable the Task View Button, the first icon in each row of taskbar is obscured. If I toggle the show task view off and then on again, I can then see the first icons in the taskbar, but they go away after any other application runs. Also, the task view button sometimes disappears along with the first icon.

I also have Win 10 Pro Insider Preview Build 10162 on a Toshiba laptop, and this problem occurs on the Toshiba as well.

I'd love to hear from anyone who had this problem and what they did to resolve it.

When clicking a program in start menu it shows in the taskbar and I need to click the taskbar to see the programs window.
Very irritating. Is there a way to change some setting so when I click to start it just opens .
After all I wouldn't have clicked if I didn't want to see it.

Answer:new program shows in taskbar and need to click taskbar to see it

Welcome to the Ten forum.

Check to see what options are available in program. Sometimes they call this settings or tool. Check to see if program has an option to open minimized. Alter this setting.

I know if it a Shortcut on desktop if you right click and look at properties there is a tab labelled "Shortcut" ___ Within that tab is option labelled "run" and you can choose window size. I wonder if you created shortcut and set this to Normal window and then tried from Start menu if it would remember its last state.

Must preface: this is my 2nd Yoga 2 in 6 days. Had to exchange the 1st one within the week b/c Windows would not load (could not get past the logo screen -GeekSquad tech said only option was to swap for a new one).

Noticed an immediate difference (not for the better) in the new/2nd Yoga 2:

Cannot read the right click bubble the pops up when you right click on an app on the taskbar (i.e. to close it, or "unpin" it). I don't remember changing this in my 1st Yoga, but the bubbles there definitiely did not look like this (see pics below).

Appreciate any help!

Hello --

I am new to this forum, but I would like to ask for help. I have been with you all since Seven Forums.

I am using a program that is no longer being further developed or supported by the developer. It is called PS3 Media Server and is basically the best program that I have found for serving media (streaming videos) from my PC over the network to my PS3.

For what it's worth, I have not found a better program that streams from the PC to the PS3 or ROKU which allows me to browse and view the files on the system remotely and then play the files by transcoding them so that even seemingly incompatible file formats will still play because of the CODECs that I have installed.

The problem is that when my computer goes to "sleep", this program also stops, rather than preventing the PC from sleeping and letting me continue to stream my videos. I realize that I could change the Sleep / Wake settings each and every time I want to view a video on my TV, but that seems tedious.

Is there a way to tell Windows 10 to not sleep when this specific program, PS3 Media Server, is running and / or being used?

Thanks for your consideration of my issue. I appreciate any help or feedback that you can give me to shed light on this problem.

~Antonio

P.S. Any idea what happened to Windows 9? Usually, 9 comes after 8 but I guess the folks at M$ did not learn this in Kindergarten.

Hello. Let me explain my problem.

I had a program installed called Spiral Knights, and I pinned the icon onto the taskbar so I could quickly launch it. When I was done playing it for good, I uninstalled it and it looked like the icon was off the taskbar, but it wasn't. When I tried to put another program onto the taskbar, called minecraft_server.jar, it pinned to the Spiral Knights icon, even though SK isn't installed anymore. Wherever I try to put the minecraft_server.jar onto the taskbar, the SK program is still there, and it says if I want to pin the minecraft_server.jar onto SK. Please help!

Answer:Can't pin items onto the taskbar because of a program on the taskbar

looks like your task bar is unlocked. could you right click on your task bar, click on tool bars and see if there is any thing named "Spiral Knights"?

Hello All,

I am running a WIN XP 32 SP2. For about a month now I have been noticing that several of my commonly used programs such as Outlook, Word, IExplorer, and PixInsight - an astrophotography processing program - still have active processes in the Program Manager after I have successfully closed the program via the "X" GUI.
After there are two to three process ghosts running I am no longer able to start the same program again until I manually end all of the processes in Program Manager or reboot.
I have had it suggested that it is the cause of a Win32 virus but I do not seem to have the added 60 to 70 kb tacked on to the process - not that I would know if there were extra resources being used in the first place.
I run Norton 360 on a daily basis and the best it has ever come up with are various low risk tracking cookies. It will "fix" the threats but I will see them reappear a few days later. I am thinking several of these are associated with ads and the like. There is one cookie that is not identified however.

I, of course, would very much like to not have to reinstall Windows if at all possible.

Thanks for taking a look!

Cheers,
Adam

Try running Spybot Seach & Destroy (FREEWARE). YOu may find something tying up your CPU (trojan).

Also try SSI (System Spyware Interogator).
I have experienced lags in my shutdowns. One biggest lag is Spybot takes time to shut down.LOL How much memory do you have? Low memory, with many porgrams open causes lags in shutdowns. What is your Virtural Memory SET at.? Not having enough virtual memory can cause lagging in the system. Do you run a registry cleaner every other day? Try Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. Try Argente FREE Registry cleaner (BETTER). Try a Registry Defragger.. Perhaps your CPU is failing, cause it too hot? Perhaps your Memory is failing and losing values of stored data. Perhaps you have virus/trojan/spyware. Why do you use OUTLOOK. I only use it to send out, but never receive. People Hack it to easily, and it is a trojan/Virus bomb waiting to happen..

Before I got on the web the first time, I found windows delaying shutdowns. Increasing my virtual mem two to three times as much has improved my computer response. Some of The programs you are running, put a burden on the cpu, and if you are running virus software, antispyware, etc all at the same time, you will see delays in processes shutting down. I personally go into TaskManager and END processes.. Regardless, there are many things that can cause your Windows to run badly.. Or respond slowly. And one is shutting your computer off, or losing power and not having a normal shutdown, with the WRi... Read more

How to stop a program from taking priority from an active window? If I'm typing something in word, and I have something running in the background, say a program installing or something downloading, suddenly a dialog box pops up infront of my document in word and I am typing and unwittingly press a key and accept whatever the box was aksing. Very frustrating. How to stop this crap from happening?

Answer:Pop up dialog box taking control of active program

Either change the settings in the program that's popping up - or get rid of it. That sort of behavior is unacceptable in well-behaved software.

I've been using an OCR program (Abbyy FineReader 6.0 Sprint Plus) for scanning and pdf'ing old files for months with no problems. But now, when I try to run it, I get the opening banner, then nothing. Windows task manager shows the program under processes, but not under applications.

MY OS is XP home, which is completely up to date. Everything was working fine until a couple of days ago. I don't think I've changed any settings. I think there were some recent automatic microsoft updates, but I can't recall whether those were just before or just after this problem arose.

Any suggestions very much appreciated! Below is a list of what I've tried so far.

Tom
1. Original problem: When I ran the program, I got this error message:

"Internal Program Error:

C:\FineReader6\StartUp\Batch\BatchDoc.cpp, 185."

It gave me two options: OK and Cancel.

If I clicked on OK, nothing happened. Program didn't load.

If I clicked on cancel, I got a runtime error ["This application has
requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the
application's support team for more information.)

Contacted Abbyy technical support and they recommended uninstalling and then re-installing from an url they gave me. Did that. It got rid of the error message, but the program still doesn't run.

2. Tried running the program with virus checking software turned off. No difference.

3. Spent all day ye... Read more

On this page <_ http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/407147/answers-to-common-security-questions-best-practices/ _> I see this sentence: “Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts.”  The antecedent for "one of them" is "anti-virus program".

I would like to ask if the author, or anyone, has a link to a published paper (or papers) that shows test results that outline the above sentence.

I'm not new to the Net, hardware, software, or security and have read many times about two active anti-virus products running simultaneously being a danger, and I have always taken that as true without asking for specific research papers on that point, but this one of an inactive product conflicting with an active product (anti-virus product, that is) — the concept/idea/contention that an inactive anti-virus product conflicting with an active anti-virus product I would like to see supported by research.  I have to assume that somebody has done the testing or research and I have been looking very hard for such, but so far have come up with no results.  Now I'm starting to ask around.

Thank you for your attention to my question, and I chose this forum because of the part in the title "Protection Methods".  If I erred in my choice of forum, please excuse me.

Answer:Inactive Anti-virus Program Conflicts with Active One

Hello ManyQs and Welcome -
I am not the author of the article, but I can quote one line, that from memory is from AVG or avast! -

Antivirus programs must install their drivers deep into the operating system for them to be effective... so even disabled antivirus programs can and will affect others that are installed.

If you read the reasoning behind loading installed drivers, this alone can also cause problems, and this is why we make sure you use the correct tool to remove all drivers from old Antivirus programs.

Also if you have more than one Antivirus installed, it is of no use unless it has been fully Updated, and to do this you would need to fully disable or uninstall the other program.

Online Antivirus scanners do not need to install in the same manner, since you install only half a program and the drivers are no longer active when the program has completd its job.

I do hope that this in some small way offers at least a part answer to your question -

Thank You for your question -

Please, do post back if you wish for more information, and you are more than welcomed at this forum -

Hello all,

I have been experiencing some window focus loss and it's especially noticeable while gaming.
I would be gaming and then I would lose focus on the game and have to click back in manually.

Sometimes it doesn't happen but then sometimes it occurs very often within 10 seconds apart.

I ran Malwarebyte and window defender and came back empty. It has to be some external program that is making windows lose focus but I can't seem to find what it is. I thought it was pingzapper so i removed it but the problem still occurs.

I did have some Malware previously that made utorrent not work and mute my mic but those have been removed.

PS note: I would also hear the windows chime from time to time but have nothing on the screen shows up.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Nataku

Answer:Active program Window Losing Focus Issue

FYI.

I have already tried disabling windows error reporting and disabling windows for checking solutions but still the problem persisted.

I don't have any wireless programs either which sometimes causes these problems.

I have a program called "kmttg.jar" that I use a lot (it transfers programs between my computer and my Tivo). When I right click on the program icon either on my desktop or the taskbar (when it's running) there is no "Pin to Taskbar" option (I suppose because it's a "jar" file?). Is there any other way to pin it to the taskbar? Thanks.

Answer:Can't Pin Program to Taskbar

Have you tried holding down the right mouse button on the icon and then dragging it up to the taskbar? Letting go of the right mouse button should offer to pin it.

On my superbar, for google chrome and notepad, it says Google chrome (2) and Notepad (2). How can i get rid of the (2)?

Answer:Program (2) on taskbar

Hello Lloyd,

This usually happens when there was a duplicate one with the same name, so the 2 is added to the second copy since they cannot have the same file name. If you are unable unpin the duplicates directly from the taskbar, then double check in this hidden system folder below where pinned taskbar items are stored to see if you may have duplicates of these. If so, you can just delete them to stop 2 being added.

Code:

C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
Hope this helps,
Shawn
