I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, the other day I started a game on my notebook and it turned off. When trying to start it up again the screen turned black with purple code across it and couldn't fully boot up. After leaving it alone for a day I went to turn it back on and it worked fine. A couple days later I went to turn it on and it started to boot up but the screen stayed black. I have tried the bios power reset, and the cap lock blinks white 5 times, two fast then a break, twice fast then a break then once more. It has been a few days and this problem is persisting. I have tried hooking it up to an external monitor and it tries to connect then days signal can't be found. Any help would be appreciated!!

hello, this is ecobill. i am new in the neighborhood. I know a little about computers (enough to be dangerous); so, I need help once in while. Whenever I have trouble it is never the normal problems.
Because I lost the printer drivers and USB drivers on my present computer when I updated to XP Service pack 2 and I have been able to install them from any locaton.

I have received a used, but more updated computer. I was told it worked, but there was no rack for the hard drives that matched the screw holes. I adapted an old rack and when I turn on the power with the monitor attached, there is nothing but a black screen. The power supply appears Ok, because some of the lights come on; the hard drive is running; and the fans come on the motherboard and video card. The monitor is OK because I used it on another older computer. Also when I just unplug the monitor from the video card, the screen comes on. I tried another older video card in one of the shorter card slots, but it did work either.
Any ideas out there? Thanks

Answer:Monitor Screen stays black

Monitor stays black

I don't know how to reset the cmos unless you mean to pull the battery. I don't know about the BIOS bus for the video (I can't see any BIOS) settings. I removed the original AGP video card that I thought might be a problem and I put an older working video card (Trident) in another PCI slot and this made no difference. I pulled the RAM chips to clean the connections and reset all cables. I disconnected the CD drive, the floppy drive, and later the hard drive after checking each situation indiviudally, but this made no difference.

Another problem (may be related) is the on-off switch does not control anything. I have to use the toggle switch in the back. I checked the wire connection from the switch to the motherboard (Intel D845BG) and it looked OK.
Thanks

Okay now i have no idea what the model is for my mother board, and no idea what type of AGP slot it has, but it is empty because atm i have an onboard NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX INtegrated GPU. my computer atm is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 512 MB PC2700 333 cl2.5 DDR (its also a crapy HP Pavilion if that helps). I bought the computer back in september 2003 and it was refurbished if that helps in determining what type of AGP slot it is.

here is the video card i bought:http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1043623&sku=C460-8006
(ya i know, noot good or anything, but i dont need some super good video card with my computer) i only wanted to get a new one because when i bought new ram (2x512, PC3200 400 cl2.5 DDR ram) it didnt work in my computer when ever i ran a game like cs, it would always shut down or restart my computer.

I know i need to disable my previous driver for my onboard video card, but i did that and installed the video card and checked to see if it worked by plugging in my monitor, mouse and keyboard and turning it on, and nothing came up on my monitor.

The help would be greatly appreciated, because i also want to run another game on my computer (like HL2 or CS:S because CS 1.6 just aint enough )

And if you are able to determine somehow what type of AGP slot it is, would the AGP 8x i bought work on it? or would it have voltage issues that are causing it to not work.

thanks

Hello,

I am having quite a problem with my computer:
After a while of idling, or in the middle of a game, the screen will go black, but the light stays green, indicating there still is a signal.. i think. This is on my 21' CRT. So i tried another monitor, an LCD , while this is happening, and i get the message 'Mode not supported'. I tried installing an older nvidia driver thinking that could be the problem, but it didn't fix it. When this happens i see the video card fan is still going, and I'm really not sure what is wrong.
If you could help me out that would be most excellent, the computer i am on now has Intel Extreme Graphics 2 onboard video, and it is painful to play any decent game on it.

Thanks in advance!

Edit : I also remembered sometimes(rarely) when i shut the computer it wont react when i try to turn it back on with the power button, but a few mins later as if by magic it turns on.

On my pentium 4 PC running windows XP Home, very occassionally on boot up, the monitor remains black. If I restart the computer using re-set or by holding the on/off button and then shutting down and then re starting, it boots up fine and the monitor displays clearly. This happens about once every few weeks. Is it nothing or an indication of a problem somewhere. Otherwise the system runs fast and trouble free and is watched over by Norton anti virus, Spywareblaster, Ad-Aware and Spybot. I run disc cleanup and defrag regularly. I am a little suspicious of the video card, but really not sure at all.
Thanks,

I have two NEC MultiSync LCD 2070NX monitors connected (DVI) to a Dell Precision T5500 workstation with Windows 7 Professional. One monitor does not work properly. The screen is black, showing no picture. Remote controlling the computer, I can use both screens as if everything was OK.Tested the monitor on another computer having Windows 10 Professional, similar hardware, and now connected with VGA, the same problem occurs. Everything is working fine remotely, as if there were two screens with no problems while remote controlling the computer. The monitor itself does not have any pictures, no display, and the screen stays black. A green lamp shows that the monitor is switched on.Is the monitor broken? Can I somehow repair or fix this problem before throwing it?

Answer:External monitor, no picture, screen stays black

Some Dell displays require you to use the built-in setup to identify the connection you are using. Use the button on the display itself to enter the menu and choose the vga connection. If that doesn't work, try a different type of connection or cable.

Answer:Screen going black - Light on Monitor stays Green

Sounds like your video card is going out, or not getting enough power. Check your PSU, maybe try reinstalling the video card drivers.

I had a simular problem, my monitor would go blank on about the 3rd 3d Mark test, then several minutes later my score would pop up on the screen and I could see my desktop. Got a new GPU, everything is working fine.

Good luck, hopefully someone else will have some more infor for you.

I got a new graphics card today (GTS 450) and I slotted it in, when I start it up the screen stays black, however, if I leave it for 20 seconds or so I can hear the windows start up sound.. I know my screen isnt gone because I've connected it to my laptop and it works fine. I have the Blue and White cable plugged in my monitor and my computer and still nothing, thanks.

Answer:Computer screen stays black

Do you get any signs of "life" (like the BIOS Info screen etc)
If so it's probably a driver issue (did you remove the old drivers before the switch) ?

If not, there are IMHO only 5 possibilities:
#1 The card wasn't seated properly -- reseat it
#2 The card draws more power than your PSU can handle -- get a better PSU
#3 you forgot to connect the extra power cable --connect it
#4 you bend one or more pins in the video cable -- replace
#5 The card is defective -- RMA

I have an Asus Eee PC that I got last year for my birthday. It has Windows 7 as the operating system. When I turn to computer on it seems to be working normal. When it comes time to log into a user profile and I click on the administrator profile (which is the one I use) and type in the password. The computer logs onto the profile but the screen stays completely black. I can still hear the computer running but the screen doesn't change. This has happened before but the toolbar was always visible at the bottom of the screen and now it's not. The only thing I can do with the screen black is type in Ctrl Alt and Delete to get the menu. Nothing on the menu seems to be helping with the issue.
I decided that I better see if the same thing was happening with my guest profile too. When I logged into my guest profile everything is working fine and that's what I'm on right now. However, the administrator profile has all my documents that I need for school and work so factory resetting or the possibly of wiping the computer isn't really an option.
Thank you for your time.

If it is, end the process.
Next press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up Task Manager, and then go to File \ New Task (Run) and type in explorer into the run box.
Does your desktop appear?

Got the computer from a family member, I tried fixing it for them first and I thought it was the video card so I tried a different one and still nothing. So it was unplugged and stored for months then they just gave it to me. Well I took it home and started messing with it turned it on a cple of times nothing. Moved wires around put different psu in nothing, put it back to normal it started right up powered screen up I got into windows but it had a lot of lag so I went to restart it so I could do a fresh install and screen shut off... note when it wasn't working before this point the cpu fan ran at full rpm when turned on but slowed down when it worked this first time. I turned it on and off cple times nothing unplugged psuand back in it worked enough to reinstall windows and went to restart nothing. When plugged my speakers in to see if it beeps it started up! Its toying with me, restarted it again nothing so next try I pushed on the cpu thinking the mobo was bad it started up and woked for a cple restarts and quit... I tightened. The mobo screws down to the case and worked for awhile and then started acting up on restart. It will turn on once after it sits awhile unplugged with the bios battery out. I'm confused... bad bios or the mobo? I have unplugged all things that aren't needed for start up different hd with same effect. Only thing I haven't tried yet is the ram. I'm at work and will mess with it more later. Its a compaq presario or w.e amd 3800+ 2.4 ght proc two 512m... Read more

Answer:computer turns on but screen stays black

The PSU was probably bad, replacing it should have fixed it. There may be bad caps on the motherboard or something is grounding on the MOBO to the case and causing it to not boot. Take everything apart. Take Heat Sync off of processor and apply Thermal Paste. Take MOBO out of case and check to see if there are any burn marks, bad caps, or if there are any risers missing off the case keeping the MOBO from touching the case.

Hey

When I go to turn my computer on it can't get to the windows loading screen it just stops on a blank black screen. I have/will upload a video of it happening to illustrate what is happening since I might not have described it well.

I can't post videos due to my post count but if you want to see it just PM me.

The last thing I remember my computer doing before it turned off was a virus scan then a few minutes later a blue screen with some white writing coming up so I rebooted and this happened. I have tried using my Windows CD to repair it but it hasn't worked. I can't get into safe-mode because it just stops on the black screen with white writing (Sorry for all these un-techincal names xD).

I was wondering if anyone knew what was happening? Ideally i'm looking for a fix for this so I can back-up some of my files onto an external harddrive then I want to reformat.

Thanks, Ash

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

I am attempting to remove a virus from a friend's toshiba a505-s69803 laptop.. in the transportation process i spilt a bit of water on the laptop but i do not think it effected the computer, because i was able to use the computer for days afterwards.. while trying to remove the virus in safe mode the computer would not let me run any anti-malware programs, and then subsequently shut down... now, when i try to start up the computer the keyboard lights turn on and the disc drives and fans begin working, but the screen remains blank... there are no signal beeps to indicate a hardware malfunction, and the three of the five lights on the front of the laptop (3 on the left side) are on... ive tried all the troubleshooting techniques on the forums, i.e. removing the battery and running on ac power, and vice versa, holding down the power button for 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, and 2 mins, all to no avail.. another computer savvy friend of mine said that some of these new viruses are smart enough to write itself to the bios which would prevent the computer from starting up... he recommended flashing the bios, but i do not know how to do so on a black screen, or if it might have been the water damage that may be causing a hardware problem (im thinking motherboad or video card if so)... any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Answer:Laptop will start up but screen stays black, not a computer amateur but need help!

These new viruses are truly evil... and wide spread. We have had over 30 cases since Wednesday... all doing what you describe.

But the Toshiba is also infamous for having the screen inverter go bad... cheap to replace but darn difficult to get at quickly.

Can you connect an external monitor to the VGA port on the back of the Toshiba to see what you get there?

So i just bought a new Gigabyte GTX 770, had a 650 before and everything worked. I have the Gigabyte GA-970a-ud3 mainboard with 2 PCI-E Slots, both 16x but one runs with 4x. If i put the graphics card in the top slot (16x) LEDs light up and fans start running , i hear the windows 7 welcome screen sound through the speakers but the screen stays black, but if i put the card in the bottom slot (4x) everything works, besides the fact that the graphics card is slow as hell.
Both PCI power cables plugged into it, i tried removing all drivers, resetting cmos.
I dont know what could possibly be wrong but maybe you do, so thanks in advance

Answer:Monitor displays a white screen when starting my computer and it stays that way

Does the computer seem like there is any activity at boot...Hard drive activity etc? Might be a blown video card if the system seems like it is booting up and all you see if white screen with no splash screen that says the manufacturers name like HP etc. If this system doesnt have a video card if it is integrated, you can install a video card and see if you get different results.

For several months the monitor (LCD) turns black for about 3 seconds, returns to normal for about 3 seconds, then black for another 3 seconds and back again to normal. This can happen off or on line, there is no loss of connection or work. This can occur at anytime during PC activity ? in most cases it is just once and rarely twice in the session. At first I thought that it might be the monitor, but having just acquired a new Acer 19?, I am still confronted with the same problem, which leads me to think that it might be the PC.It is a Powerc built AMD Sempron 3000+ Athlon.OS XP Home.I would appreciate any comments from members has may have had a similar problem.Thank you.

I have a problem between my computer and my monitor: I'll start the computer, hearing all the usual sounds of the fans, hard drive, etc. but nothing shows up on the screen. I had a similar issue, everything going great, then... nothing. But before I got stuck on the black screen of death, the computer had several hiccups before going down. In my case, it turned out to be faulty RAM, but I don't know if that is the case with yours. See if you can borrow a friends RAM stick and try it.

Ok, I have an older used PC with an Intel PIII. It worked fine the last time I used it about 2yrs ago.

I plugged it in this weekend, and it powered on but it did not give me a picture at all not even a post. The screen just stayed black. monitor is not the problem, I used the one I have hooked up to my current system, in fact all cables mouse and keyboard were from my new system.

Would a bad hard drive cause it to not give a picture? Wouldn't I at least see the CPU post on screen?

my first thought was that I had a bad video card so I swapped it out from my new pc to test but same problem, no picture.

before I swap out the motherboard for a spare AMD I have, is there anything else I should try?

thanks in advance

Hello there,

So as the title says, I'm having some problems with my computer. I bought it about 4 weeks ago, and no issues with it other than when I try to play an MMO that would make the graphics card work. The graphics card that is installed in the computer was separately bought and installed, so I'm thinking it might be conflict issues with the card, but I don't know.

The way it happens is, I run the games, I can play for anything from a minute, to 15mins and then my screen says it has disconnected from the image, goes black, and I can hear my computer restart, but my screen stays black. I have to manually power off and back on for my screen to start showing images again. Once restarted i get the "Problem Event Name: Bluescreen" thing.

It's really annoying since I just bought GW2 and I can't play properly any help would be appreciated.

Also, in the Action Center it's said that my Nvidia Graphics Card has stopped working or crashed, multiple times, naming the exact times my computer crashed.. which is why I believe it has to do with my card.

Overclocking -
I recommend if you are overclocking any hardware, that you reset these values within the BIOS to their default values in order to increase the stability of your system.

Please run the following tests for your graphics card and RAM:
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run Memtest86+ for least 7-8 passes, and preferrly overnight as it can take a while to fully complete.

Test each RAM stick individually, if an error is found then move the same RAM stick into the next DIMM slot and test again, if errors are found for the same RAM stick in every available slot then you have a faulty RAM module. On the other hand, if no errors are found in the next slot or the other slots for the same RAM module, then you have a faulty DIMM slot.

Test each RAM stick and every motherboard DIMM slot available.

My Lenovo Y410 screen goes black at boot, I never see anything other than a faint dim light on the monitor, like what you would see under normal circumstances until the OS started.   I can hear the pc turn on, I can type in my password, even without seeing where it goes, and the pc actually starts fine, I just can't see anything.   Anyone who can help me with this?

Answer:Lenovo Y410 Screen goes black and stays black at startup

Have you tried hooking up an external monitor? Then press (I think) Fn+F3 to toggle between ext. and lcd. This sounds like it MAY be a problem withe the lcd inverter.Very dim screen? You can just barely see images? If so, the inverter can be replaced, or the whole lcd may need replacement. If you have warranty, use it! If not, inverter can be replaced yourself, if you have patience and are careful. Search web for "replace lcd inverter"Here is one good site, different laptop, but you can see the basic steps.

I have just recently starting having a serious problem with my computer

first of all every once in a while i get the blue screen of death and the computer reboots, this didnt used to be such a problem but now recently, when the computer reboots, or if the sceen goes off for any reason,it then proceeds to go black and takes sometimes as long as 3 hours before i can get going again.

My first thought was the monitor so I hooked another one up to it and it still does the same thing, you can see it chage from a light gray to black, and the greeen power light on the monitor just flashes.

next thought was maybe a bad vga cable, so i replaced it and still the same thing

So next i replace the graphics card

I had an ATI Radeon in a pci slot, and now am runnign a evga e-gforce 8800 gts, and upgraded the power supply from the 230 watt that was in it to a 400 watt to power the card.

and this still does not work, anybody got any other ideas, i am a graphic artist who is quickly falling behind on my clients cause i cant keep my computer running

RUNNING:
Windows vista
FOXCONN MOTHERBOARD
TWIN DUAL CORE PROCESSORS
6 GIGS OF RAM

any other info you need just let me know

Hi, I tried opening my computer this morning and my screen did not show anything, it just stayed black, i tried plugging another monitor to my computer and it worked, so I just want to know how to make it work. I do not want to stay with this big monitor. takes up my whole desk

Answer:Monitor does not work and just stays black

Ok soo Im assuming the other monitor that worked is CRT ? Your current monitor does not turn on when you turn on the CPU. Do you see any lights on the monitor ? orange light possibly.

Turn monitor on and off again, then try using a different power cable, and finally try plugging in the monitor to your video cards other output.

If you still get nothing, then your monitor is busted. Take it back where you got it from or RMA. In mean time maybe this is good time for your to go dual monitor setup. Soo buy a 24 inch for 200 dollars, then when your monitor comes back from RMA make it your second monitor. ? youll never go back.....

Okay so my teac lcd tv which ive been using as my pc monitor suddenly started going black screen after 0.5/1 seconds of being powered on. i thought oh crap ive broken my tv, so i get a spare pc monitor and plug it into my pc and now the monitor also stays black on pc startup. i know for a fact that windows is starting up fine, as i have standalone speakers which give the windows sound shortly after power up.

teac lcd tv: even after unplugging and just turning on it still just goes "black screen" about 1 second after turning on. what I'm meaning by this is that my tv is infact broken even when not connected to the pc and just watching freeview it starts for 2 seconds then goes black screen ill probably have to take this to a repair shop.

the monitor: i plugged the monitor into another pc i have and the montior works fine.

the PC: when testing the monitor on my pc i used the same VGA cable as i used with the "broken" lcd tv, however when i tested the monitor on my other pc i used a different VGA cable, so next test ill use the other pcs VGA cable and see if that changes anything. I have now tested the monitor with the other VGA cable and its not not working so I'm guessing I also have a problem with my pc...
So shortly after my lcd tv seemingly breaks, now my pc seems unresponsive to another working monitor, firstly what could be causing all this? could i have possible had some kind of power surge down the VGA cable causing my tv to have this... Read more

Sounds like your on-board video has failed. In that case, you will have to install a PCI or PCIe video card if your motherboard supports such video cards. What are the specs of this "blind" computer?

I think the problem might be that I left my computer on for too long I'm not sure, but last night my monitor went black and I wiggled my mouse figuring it was on power save mode but nothing happened . so yes, I know, I shut it off the "improper" way. I turned the computer back on, and then my monitor would still stay orange (that light) so then I turned the monitor off, then back on again and it said "NO INPUT SIGNAL GO TO POWER SAVE" *sigh* :suspiciou I left it off overnight and now when I try it again, it still does the same thing.

Oh, I think you guys should also know that before, my monitor has been flickering and sometimes gives me all of these crazy colors - well it turns yellow or red sometimes - so I have to wiggle the wires in the back for it to return to normal.

When I turn on my computer, it still beeps and it seems like everything's running just fine, fan's still working and all of that. I haven't tried using other monitors yet but I'll get around to that. In the meantime, anyone have any suggestions? help! I'm not sure what to do =[

Answer:Monitor's not working - stays black

Try starting in Safe Mode by pressing F8 and then close it down properly.

Hello I have been trying to fix my computer issue for over a week now here is the problem. When I turn on the computer the DVD drive makes the noise likes its booting up but does this for a long period of time then finally SOMETIMES i get a beep. When I get a beep sometimes the mouse and keyboard lights will turn on sometimes nothing. When the mouse and keyboard lights do turn on the HD light starts flickering like its booting to the desktop. BUT the monitor still wont turn on the power light on the monitor just blinks. The monitor is plugged through DVI. I bought a new DVI cord didn't fix it I bought a new video card didn't fix it. I have 4 sticks of 1g RAM I have tried using one in each different slot. I have tried a different piece of RAM to every slot swapping them. I unplugged all components minus HD, CPU, and one stick of RAM and still wont fix issue. I hooked up my monitor to a friends computer with analog and works fine I did same on my computer with analog still nothing. Tonight I took apart everything to barebone and put back together still same issue. Oh I also took out the MOBO battery for 2 minutes and replaced with a new one still nothing. Please help me here are my specs:

AMD Athlon X2 6000
4g RAM
NVIDIA GTX 260
XFI Titanium sound card
Asus M2NE-SLI MOBO
750W PSU

Answer:PC BOOTS UP MONITOR STAYS BLACK

Gee um ok,
Right Ram comes in pairs, double check yours are paired up as purchased, even to the point of using just 2 rather than all 4. mobo manual (if available will tell you more)
disconnect your PC, remove and reinsert your video card, ensuring it is fully inserted.
if you have the manual, also have a look for a beep code dictionary, (may or may not be any help)
What video card is it?
Does it have a vga or HDMI connection you could try aswell?
VGA Drivers installed?
A reset BIOS default settings shouldn't cause this kind of problem, so run on default settings till solved.
Ensure all your cables, particuarly power are properly connected,
Maybe check your PSU output vs your systems consumption. 750 seems to be enough any peripherals pulling alot of juice?
Disconnect your Cd drive, just to see

Just some ideas

Well Every time I hook this computer up after a while the monitor screen turns black. The little orange light turns orange indicating that there is no signal. The weird thing is my computer tower light is still on but when i try to hold down the power button on the tower its unresponsive. So then i have to completely disconnect the power cord. Right now im runnning in safe mode with Networking (duh) and im not having any trouble. It seems to be software related. Answer:monitor turns black but tower stays on

It sounds like a problem with your PC rather than the monitor. Does it happen under a certain set of circumstances, for example when the grpahics card is being put under strain by a game? The first thing I'd do is visit the ATI site and update the drivers for your graphics card. If that doesn't resolve it, try taking the side off your tower and, if possible, stand a fan near it so that cool air blows across the components. Run the PC and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, you can almost certainly put it down to an overheating problem.WARNING - if you're not familiar with the insides of a PC, don't go randomly sticking your hand in there, even if it's powered off.

I go to turn off my dads computer last night and realize that the mouse wont work and the monitor (which appeared to be in power-save mode) was not getting signal from the comp. I restarted and cpu fans, power LED, and hard-drive all seem to be getting power but the monitor acts like its no even plugged into the video card. If I strip away everything but the cpu and fan, video card, ram, mobo, power supply it still does this.
I immediately thought it was the motherboard because the keyboard and mouse didnt have power when I found it. I went out and bought a new mobo and installed it and it started to boot up, got to the screen where windows XP was loading and it blue-screened and rebooted. Shortly into rebooting it shutdown completely. After that nothing would happen at all when I hit the power button. I could smell a burning sort of smell and found that it was the chip on the motherboard (visible black mark on the middle of it). So I replaced the motherboard and bought a new power supply thinking that it might have been the source of my problems. I installed these and I'm back to the beggining, everything seems to power up but the monitor stays in stand by. I checked the cpu when I had it out and there were no visible burn marks or anything. I've switched the ram into every possible position. I removed the ram to test for error code beeps, but got nothing. I tried a different video card, still the same problem. I checked the outlet, power cords and the monitor to v... Read more

So here's the problem...
Every now and then when I'm playing games on my computer I have the game on my main monitor and youtube open in the other monitor, I tend to listen to songs that way, I get an error message saying something along the lines of 'Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered'. Usually this only makes both monitors go black for a second and then changes the youtube video box green until the next video on the playlist loads, so it wasn't a big deal for me. However today it happened and my second monitor that had the youtube video open on it went black, and stayed black. I restarted my computer, and it was still black. I unplugged my computer and monitors from the wall then booted up the computer, it is still black. I also tried changing the ports on the graphics card that the monitor is plugged into but nothing helped. The strange thing is I can still interact with the monitor, I can drag my icons over onto it and then drag them back onto my main monitor, the only problem being I can't see anything. When I ran 'dxdiag' and looked at the Display 2 tab it also showed no problems. If anyone else has had his issue and has fixed it or anyone knows a fix for this I would greatly appreciate it. I will post some spec's below to try and help with a conclusion.

So I got a hp pavilion tx510us entertainment notebook (runs Vista) and it seems to turn on (like all the lights are on and it makes noises) but the screen is black/blank or whatever. And its not just a blank screen because then I would have been able to put my pass in and then hear the turn on music and stuff. The thing is this happened before when it was still under warranty so I sent it in for free and they sent it back and it turned on and it still had on all my stuff so it must have been an easy enough solution, but when I chatted with them again I guess they don't keep track of what they did to it and they want me to send it in again and that would cost a large sum of money because its no longer under warranty. I did a hard reset a few times and took out the memory module and put it back in agian but still nothing. So, anyone have any ideas?

My computer was dusty and may have been overheating. The fans were operating very loudly and i tried to turn on the screen but it is black. I cleaned the dust, and it still will not bring anything up on the screen. The fans work and i can hear the drives working. I tried changing the psu, cleaning the heatsink, and reseating everything. and removed the battery and put it back in to reset the bios. Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated? Is it possible that i fried my motherboard or processor?

I turn on my computer, it begans to start up, and then the moniter just goes black and won't show the desktop or anything. It has done this every day for the past week or more and it's getting harder and harder to get onto the computer. What I do is turn the moniter on/off until it shows me a glimpse of the desktop, and then I mess with the screen saver power options (while it continues to keep going black and I have to turn the moniter on and off to get glimpes of what i'm doing), and eventually it just stops going black and works for the whole rest of the day until the next morning. I checked the FAQs and I heard people with the same situation mention video cards, but I'm not that great with computers and frankly I don't even know what that is. Help?

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

As far as I can tell, the computer is working fine, except for the monitor and dvd and cd players, Im not sure about my computers specifics. If someone want to tell me how I can figure those out, I'd appreciate it. Here's the story, I left my computer in stand-by (which i rarely do) I came back a while later and the computer was on and running, not in stand-by mode. I turned the monior on but it stayed blank. I held down the power button until it turned off and then pressed it again to turn it on. It powers up fine and the fans run but soon the DVD and CD players make a clicking sound. When I stick a paper clip into the little hole to open it, i can feel somthing pushing back against me at the same frequencey as the clicking. Also the monitor stays blank. When I turn the power on, the light is orange at first and then starts to blink green. Has this ever happened to anyone or can someone point me in the right direction to fix this problem? Thank You.

So I had a problem with the monitor not turning on when I start it up and there was 4 beeps continuously cycling one two three four, one two three four over and over again. So I took out the memory cards blew into them as suggested in another thread that was old and started it up and the beeping was gone however the screen was still black on my monitor.
There were many suggestions in an older thread from like 2010. I asked my girlfriend if she had put any of those memory cards and their herself and she told me that yes she in fact had. So I figured out which two were the original 2 that came with the tower. I took out the ones that she installed rebooted and it started right up no problem monitor was working fine.

My wifes laptop has developed a problem. On booting it starts with the "Windows starting " logo and then goes to a black screen and goes no further. It looks like the hard drive is still flashing away giving the impression that underneath it is still working but no picture. We want to use the repair disc that came with the laptop but because we cant see anything to shut the computer down via windows we are having to use the power button and therefore it prompts to start up again in safe mode because it was shut down unusually. We want to close it down completely and let the repair disc do its work on boot up from fresh start. Because we cant see anything on the screen to initiate shut down via windows is there another way of shutting down completely for the above reasons.
Also do I need to press f2 and tell the system boot from the cd (repair disc) or can I leave settings as is and it will do it automatically. Answers appreciated asap. Many thanks

Answer:How else do I turn off windows when computer has black screen.

On many laptops pressing and releasing the on/off button acts as a re-set but if you hold the power button down for 5 to 10 seconds the machine will turn off completely.

HI,
My problem started back when i tried to install windows 7 on another disk, but it would not. Now i did this while my primary windows 7 hard drive was already istalled. after i gave up on trying to get windows to install onto this secondary hard drive, i rebooted the computer to find that my primary ssd would not load windows, and simple came to a black screen that said:

Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart

then i would press a key and it would say:

Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I have no recovery disk and most definitely do not understand what remove disks or other media means because I removed the windows installer dis and tried again but nothing happened. Please help, i am so confused, thankyou.

I've seen this problem posted a lot, but never with all of the same details as me.  I have Windows 8, but unsure if 64 or 32, I"m guessing 64.  I have a sealed battery, so I'm unable to remove the battery.   I rarely see my model number mentioned at all. I have turned the computer off and back on several times with peripherals removed.  Right now, it's on and open (so it's not asleep) and not plugged in.  All I can see and get is a black screen.  The caps light blinks now and again. I really would rather not reset and lose everthing, of course, who does?   What do I do?

I was playing a game on my PC while it was storming out and the power surged. Before I could unplug my pc the power came back on and my computer started back up. After starting back up it said installing update do not turn off the computer. I waited until it was done then it brought me to a black screen with a Windows logo and a circular loading bar. I waited somewhere between 5-10minutes before holding down the power button until it turned off. Upon turning the computer back on all the fans would work and everything it would show the blue screen that says to press esc then brings me to a black screen where it would have a _ mark in the top left and beep non stop. It isnt a long beep or anything its just multiple beeps non stop until I turn it off. I have tried taking out the ram and putting it back in but it just keeps beeping. I did a mem test and it showed that nothin was wrong with the ram. The beeps are high pitched and very fast. I have a video showing what happens if there is a way to post it.

Answer:black screen after i turn my tower to my other computer on.r

If you do not see the message "No Signal" on the monitor screen, very likely it's the monitor itself which is faulty or "dead".To check if it is indeed the monitor which needs replacing, connect it to your laptop if possible (there should be a VGA port on one side of your laptop so you can connect the monitor using the same VGA cable that connects monitor to your PC). If the monitor does not work on your laptop either, you need a new monitor. However, if your tower is not starting up it won't be a faulty monitor. There is something wrong inside the tower. Get someone to check it over, maybe needs a new PSU (Power Supply Unit) which fits inside the tower.Do not rush out to buy a new monitor if the tower is not starting up as the problem will be inside the tower.message edited by phil22

Hi Guys,

I got a virus this morning and moved it to chest and then I restarted it, when it began to boot, it froze for about a minute at the boot screen then proceeded to load after this, so I shut it down and turned it back on and had to wait about a minute on the boot screen to get past it, it so I went into the bios and clicked the reset to optimized defaults incase it had a problem, so I saved it and exited.

The computer then booted it as it would do when i turn it on but now the screen stays black?

Anyone have any suggestions what to do? as its just black and I can't see anything to get into the bios or such?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Turn Computer On Screen Is Black After Bios Change?

Try unplugging the PC and removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard for 30-45 minutes. This will clear the BIOS settings.

Hope this helps.

redpanda4321,

Have you attempted to connect an external display to see if you can get some sort of display? That will help make the determination if it is the motherboard itself or if it is the screen or a cable that could be having an issue.

power light comes on but the screen remains black there is no sound nor any flickers please help operating hp 2000 dual core windows 7 thank you very much!

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 that is out of warranty. I bought it in 2013.  With that out o' the way, my Lenovo Yoga 13's screen stays black even when the power is on...I see no Lenovo logo or anything AND the laptop keeps restarting on its own, so it is stuck in restart mode, with the screen staying black the whole time.  This laptop has been doing this (black screen even though power is on and shuts off and restarts on its own) for about 6 months now....(Jan 2017-June 3, 2017 as of this writing). This laptop works WHEN IT WANTS TO EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, BUT NOT OFTEN.  I turned the laptop on now, and I'm typing on it now, **BUT when it doesn't work, which is most of the time**, it shows a black screen (I see nothing on the screen) even with the power on and constantly restarts on its own. Is this hardware issue a motherboard problem or a screen issue specifically? Specifically, is it the motherboard that needs to be fixed on this Yoga 13 or is it a screen issue? If it's a motherboard issue that needs to be fixed, how much would it cost? Or If it's a screen issue, how much would that cost to fix? Any help on this is much needed!

Hello Complex1Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Sounds like this will be an issue with the HDD or MOBO instead of the Display I believe.
Try running an LSC scan, it may be able to detect a hardware issue on the unit.
1. Please click on the following link2. Under the section ?Download? select the relevant Hyperlink dependant on whether your Lenovo is running Windows 7/8/8.1 32 bit or 64 bit. 3. When prompted, select save and browse to a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded files. 4. Navigate to the folder where you saved the installation file, lscsetup_x86_26001.exe. 5. Double-click the installation file icon to start the installation. 6. Follow the onscreen instructions via the installation wizard that will install Lenovo Solution Centre on your system. 7. Once installed you will have a ?Lenovo Solution Centre? icon on your desktop please click to open this. 8. Once solution center is opened please select ?Checkup? then ?Hardware Scan? and ?Full Scan? 9. This will take up to 20 minutes, see if this can find any errors.

Hello everybody, today my laptop has become blind. Let me explain:

My laptop was purchased in 2007
Specs:
Alienware m9750
Dual nvidia 7950 go
Dual core 2.0
2 gigs of ram
80 gb harddrive

So here's what happened, today I was watch s movie on netflix when suddenly my screen goes black. Though I had crashed but my laptop was still on and the sound was still going. restarted, and the initial screen was slightly pixellated and garbled. Which has now made my laptop permanent garbled and pixely. After the windows logo. My screen goes black, but I am still hear the windows start up sound. I found that I am able to click on some music files on my desktop that are able to play, so this is a video issue. I reboot in safe mode which works this time figure to disable and uninstall the videocard drivers. I restart and I'm able to use my pc somewhat normally( still garbled). Reinstalled the nvidia drivers then halfway through says: error install failed or something, it happen really fast then crashed, tried restarting atleast 20 times in safe mode but it freezes up after it tries to load partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

All of the other options for start up(even last settings to work) the screen goes black after the windows logo. I have tried tinkering with the bios but it doesn't help. Its basically being blind using a computer. So I'm wondering if there is anyway to possibly blindly open up command prompt and possibly disable or uninstall the drivers from there, I'm ab... I'm using a D975XBX Intel Main Board, 2 GB of DDR2 Ram, A 512MB ATI Radeon. The last thing I was doing was making some AVI to VOB conversions and the computer slowed down EXTREMELY then turned off. Now everytime I turn it on and let it try to load windows it stays on a black screen for hours. It won't even load the OS. I tried reformating, but it won't even detect the windows CD in the DVD drive. You know that screen that goes "Press any key to run the setup"... Nope no such screen. I tried to use a Nuke disk but it won't run a floppy either. I set the bios to run DVD ROM and Floppy as primary, yet it seems to skip these steps and jumps straight into the black screen. At first I thought it might have been my LCD. Maybe the computer was running a setup that can only be viewed in 800x600... But when i switched to a regular CRT monitor, still, the infamous black screen... What could it be??

Answer:Screen stays black....

When you try to boot up, do you see anything at all? Or is it a black screen the entire time?

If you don't see anything it may be a video card problem. If you have another card, try swapping it out. But usually, if it's a bad card, you'll hear a series of beeps when you turn on the PC>

connect your lap to external monitor to check if it displays. If it works, something wrong with lap internal displa. Otherwise, it can be a vga card. One more point, have you played with Fn+F5?

When i try to turn on my laptop it powers on but the screen stays blank

Answer:When i turn on Satellite L350D-131 the screen stays blank

Hi

I read a lot about similar notebook symptoms and in most cases the users were abele to solve this by following this short and simply workaround;

- disconnect AC adaptor, remove battery
- leave the notebook disconnected for a longer period of time (wait 3-4 hours)
- then connect both parts and power up the unit.

I think this should help if there is no serious hardware problem?

Whenever I shutdown my lappy via the start menu or press the power to do so, vista appears to be shutting down as the open windows close, but then my screen goes black and the power light, wlan, and bluetooth lights remain on. Those indicate the laptop is still running and to completely turn it off I have to hard-shut it by pressing and holding the power button.

I've had this before but can't remember what I did to stop it
It Is exactly like you pull the dvi/hdmi lead out of monitor/gpu everything still working i.e. if playing video on youtube it carries on playing just no picture.
I think it was something to do with Intel's built in gpu, but I have disabled it everywhere I can think of bios, device manager etc.
Can anyone through some light on this please as it's startingto annoy me now

My rig specs in sig.

Answer:Random black screen, rig stays on !!

When does this occur? At random? Only when videos/games are playing? Also, what is the exact behavior? Is the monitor giving off behavior as if it has lost its video source, like an error saying the source was lost or it is switching through different connections to find one? Can you tell if your system is locked up, or if it's still accepting your input? The best way to determine thsi is to have the display lost when playing a video, then pressing a key to stop/start playback.

If the monitor is acting like it's not connected to the PC, then it can be a bad video port on your card, a bad/loose video cable, or the monitor itself has a bad port or is just plain bad. You will want to start with potential physical suspects before dabbling with software. Have you tried actually running the video through your onboard video (make sure to enable it and stuff of course) instead of your graphics card and see if that worked?

So, my computer has had this as a recurring problem for about a year now. After suffering some form of trauma, (a small child running into, someone tripping over it, etc.) my computer screen will turn a solid color, usually gray or blue. After shutting it down the monitor turns black and attempting to boot up the computer causes the monitor to stay black, though the fans in the case turn on and machine makes various clicks and whirs.

Every time this has happened in the past I have gone into the case, disconnected all outside cables, the video card, the battery on the motherboard, and occasionally other things as well, sort of haphazardly. I let the thing sit for a while and then plugged everything back in and after maybe one or two iterations of this process the thing eventually booted up.

After it's most recent trauma (having a laptop dropped on it =_=; ) it hasn't booted up properly after several unplug-and-replug-everything routines. The fans still start up, like before, but I haven't been able to get video to work. I have tried disconnecting the video card and plugging the monitor into the built in graphics on the motherboard but that still didn't work. While "on" I tried pressing various "locks" on the keyboard and found that numlock caused a light to light up, but neither caps nor scroll lock did ( I don't know if this means anything, but I figured I'd throw it out there ). No sounds are emitted by the speakers, but ... Read more

I called hp and they had me do some troubleshooting but it didn't work and they said my display was no good anymore so we left it there (I didnt want to pay all that money to fix it). About 3 days after that it magically worked again but one day it seemed like it was trying to go out again the picture got real grainy for a second then it went back to normal. Now I'm back where I started. I've tried everything, when I hook up an external monitor it works so it has so be lcd related. Any help/advice??

Yo.

Well, here's my problem; I've recently upgraded my Graphics card, Ram and Motherboard, and whenever I switch the power on, all the fans start up, but nothing appears on the screen. I unfortunately have no other DDR2 ram, PCIE cards or a motherboard that TAKES PCIE >.< So I can't test any of the components on their own, plus the motherboard has no on-board graphics.

I've had a look at the POST guide, and nothing from there appears to work. I've also tried disconnecting everything except the ram, graphs card and CPU, but again no change. Could it be that my Ram is faulty/incompatable? Fauly Graphics card? I know my CPU works because I've tried it in another computer, and it runs fine.

Any help would be appreciated. (It might take me a while to reply, sorry if that's the case.)

After the screensaver automatically turns off the display (after 20 minutes), the screen STAYS black, no matter what I do it won't turn back on. I have pressed buttons on the keyboard, mouse, and turned the display on and off. I have to hard reset my computer... it sucks man! What is going on? I looked in the power options and sleep is on 'never' and turn off hard disk is on 'never'. I was looking for hypernation, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I deleted my hybernation files a while back because they were taking up space and I never had used it.

This has just started fairly recent, when I got my new video card (eVGA 9800GTX+ 512MB) it started doing it, but that is around the same time I deleted my hybernation files, that is why I suspect it, but I can't find anywhere to enable or disable it. I checked in power settings under advanced and it isn't there.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

What's going on? I need help, this is driving me nuts, I am hard resetting my computer almost every day because of this. I don't want to shut off automatic display shutoff because my Acer X191W monitor gets hot and I like it to cool down when the screen gets shut off. (In the past I had this same model of monitor burn up on me, don't know why, but I suspect heat. This thing gets really warm after a couple hours. They sent me a new one for free then, but my warranty is up now.)

Help please,
Thanks,

Bushpilot

Answer:Screen stays black after screensaver

I would have to agree that deleting your hybernation files is probably the cause. Since they are only needed if you allow your computer to hibernate, there must be another step to shutting it off. It does seem like you checked the right places though. I would assume it would be in your power settings.

You might want to check you BIOS though. If it's disabled there, I'd think you'd be ok.

Hi ladies & gentlemen, I live in France and I bought a Lenovo Y700 laptop in June 2016. I was very happy of it until one day when I wanted to boot the laptop, the screen stayed black. I know the system is working because the leds are on and I can hear the noise inside the laptop. I don't know what to do because my screen is black in every circumstances even if I tap F8 or F5. I have no access to the BIOS and when I tried to connect the laptop to my TV with the HDMI cable, it didn't work. Could it be a problem of graphic card ? The Lenovo support told me to factory reset with the button but it did not work either. Thank you in advance for helping me

Hi My daughter has an Advent laptop. A few days ago she turned it on to find that the screen stays black. You can barely make out the word Windows as it loads and then very very faintly the desktop. I thought initially that she had inadvertently turned the screen brightness right down but i have had a look at it and it isn't that. Any idea what might have happened? Thanks.

Answer:Laptop Screen Stays Black

Looks like the Screen backlight as gone. You could try the fn ket plus the one with a Sun on it. But don't hold out much hope

Answer:G50-70 Does not start and stays on Black Screen

hi arsalanjunejo

Welcome to the Forums.

From you observation, it seems like an internal component is failing (e.g., the HDD).

If the HDD is still detected in the BIOS, can you try these steps:
1. Using another PC, follow this guide on how to create an Windows 8.1 USB installation media
2. Boot from the Win8.1 media that you have created on Step 1 and on the Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open a command prompt then type:

chkdsk C: /F   (where C:\ is your Windows installation drive and /F fixes errors on the disk)

When finished, reboot the machine and observe if you can now boot into Windows

Let me know how it goes.

Regards

2 months ago,my HDD IDE died because of "the click of death" thingy and now, recovers itself (its kinda weird),the windows starts normally,i couldn't hear any clicks from my HDD anymore but after a few days, when i restarted my PC properly (i restarted it from the "start menu")...here goes the "new" problem...i restarted my pc,my system info appears (the RAM and the video card thingy),then, the ASUS motherboard logo appears...and after that...a blinking underscore appears in a black screen...after a few seconds, the "blinking underscore" finally disappeared BUT my screen remains in blank and black and stays there forever,it didn't even reach the windows loading screen.I did tried to disconnect and connect my cables from the motherboard,i even tried to disconnect and connect my HDD from the motherboard and did the same with my video card and RAM but it didn't solve the problem.
WHAT IS REALLY THE PROBLEM?...IS IT THE WINDOWS OR MY HDD?

BTW EITHER OF THE TWO SAFE MODES ARE FREEZING WHEN I HIT "ENTER",
I'VE ALREADY CHECKED THE BIOS BUT IT SEEMS IT DETECTS ALL OF MY HARDWARE.

any help will be appreciated,thanks.

Hi,

I am not the most computer savy person, but i do know that when i open the lid on my laptop, the screen is supposed to come on. Sometimes the screen stays blank, but I can here it make the sign in sound and if I plug it into the TV via the HDMI port it shows the screen is working fine.

What have to do then is shut it down, open and close the top a few times and hope it works again. This can even happen if it is open and working and i restart the computer.

Any ideas?

Answer:Re: Satellite M - Screen stays black

Hello

It would be very interesting to know which Satellite M notebook you have exactly. Maybe you can add this information. ;)

Furthermore have you connected any external devices expect monitor via HDMI?
If you have SD card inserted, remove it.

Are you using the latest BIOS version?
