Windows 7 Starter shelf life?

Question: Windows 7 Starter shelf life?

This is my first time posting here. I have been having problems with my netbook (bought July 2010) using Windows 7 Starter for several months. This is my first non desktop and I've never experienced "crashing" problems before. It started when I chose to download "all" images from an email on gmail. The email was from a friend so there should not have been an issue. Immediately I had major problems with repeated crashing, realtek errors, and general slowness in how the computer is running. This is an almost daily thing, although sometimes it will happen 10x a day and sometimes once. Sometimes I can fiddle with it and get back on right away, sometimes, not for a day. Yesterday I started to wonder if the Starter version had a self life? Like maybe its called Starter for a reason, and it just doesn't last that long, forcing you to buy the premium edition?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Starter shelf life?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The keywords being 'should not have'.

What sort of fiddling?

Since these issues started after downloading from gmail, it would be advisable to do a virus scan as well as scan with Mbam.

No, one of the limitations of the Starter version is not a shelf life

hi there, i bought a transcend 4gb basic SD-card (NOT SDHC) a year ago and am wondering about the shelf life for transcend branded SD-cards. if i do not use the card AT ALL, how long will data inside last?
i've got some really precious family photos in there that i'd like to not die out as quick as my burnt discs.
thanks for helping!

Answer:what is the Shelf-Life of SD-cards?

I don't think there is anyone who can give you an exact date. If the pictures are precious, make sure they are backed multiple times on different media (Flash cards, drives, CDs, etc).

Has anyone heard of any studies that may have been done to determine the shelf life of a CD or DVD that has been burned on a PC?

For instance, many people will tell you a VHS tape starts degrading a in quality in a few years. Has anyone heard any such claims for CD DVD types of media?

Answer:DVD Media Shelf Life?

I don't know of any actual studies but its well established that CDs and DVDs will degrade, including both commercial and home-burnt. Theres no set figures because it depends upon several factors, such as the quality of the media, and how they are stored.

You can compensate for the problem however, for example, whenever I burn a DVD that is intended for long-term storage, I will create about a gig of par files. That way even if a gig of the disc becomes unreadable I won't lose any data.

As there is no 'sell-by' date on new photographic paper does this mean it lasts indefinitely? Or is there only a 'shelf-life' after a photograph has been printed upon it? Can anyone enlighten me please? Thank you. Meldrew.

Answer:shelf life - photographic paper

Inkjet photographic paper kept in cool dry enclosed conditions will last longer than your handle suggests... :) Photographs that have been printed upon depends on the ink quality and printer used etc.Claims i personally believe from one manufacturer are to long.Print what you need too and save others on CD

I am considering purchasing a brand new Lenovo battery, from a website similar to eBay in my country ( It is a 9 Cell battery for the t400/t61 with a fru of  43R2499. However it is manufacured in December 2009. Would this battery still be good? I am think yes as I have a battery in my T61p from 2007 that has not been used much and works great. But i am ask the option of the users of this forum.

Answer:Thinkpad battery shelf life

I have 5-year-old batteries that work fine, but a new one that has never been charged might be dead.  I bought a lot of never-charged 3-year-old batteries and a few wouldn't take a charge.  I will add that the ones that did take a charge, took a full charge and acted like new batteries.

I bought a netbook a while back with Windows 7 Starter.

I had an extra upgrade key of 7 Home Premium from one of those 3 pack family upgrades so I upgraded the netbook and put the key in.

I want to reformat the netbook back to Windows 7 Starter and just use it's original Starter key it came with. Home Premium bogged it down too much.

My question is...

Is there a way I can reuse the upgrade key of 7 Home Premium on another computer or did I waste the license by putting it on the netbook?

Thank you in advance for your help,

I have a question that perhaps you guys could answer. When a machine ships with an OEM version of an operating system (any machine, any OS), is it easy to change its operating system by buying a full off the shelf version of something other than what it shipped with and then do a clean install?

I am a pretty pragmatic person and in theory it should work, but I trying to look at this from a pragmatic perspective.

Are the hard drives imaged in the factory a certain way according to the chipset? Does it affect drivers, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:OEM Win 7 VS Off the Shelf Win 7?

Sure . . you buy the new version and install . Depending on how you install ( Clean vs Upgrade) you may have to reinstall the drivers.

What version do you have and what version do you want?

My 12-year-old son wants to buy a gaming PC - to play Minecraft, Age of Empires etc. We've looked online and at PC World but keep getting conflicting advice. He's got a budget of 600 and I can add to that to get a good quality model. His current laptop overheats and runs very slowly so he wants a PC that is quick with good graphics. Any suggestions of off-the-shelf PCs would be very welcome. We're not confident enough to build it ourselves. With thanks

Answer:Which is the best off-the-shelf gaming PC

I am not a "Gamer" but a well respected/reputable firm and recommended by many on this Forum is Novatech - take a look here for "starters" (and prices) enter link description here
In my opinion any of the first 3 would be suitable and around about your budget.
Then I suggest you wait for further advice from the Gaming members to keep you right.

Ok I have been asked to put in place a firewall for a small business. they need something to pass vpn between two locations and a laptop.

my first thought is endian, set it up and let them go would give them what they need and wha t not. But they have seen the netgear/dlink firewalls from off the shelf stuff and are thinking about those instead.

My question is what is the benefit of say endian vs a netgear firewall. Both are web configurable and endian gives more control but other then that what kind of features would a nix box have compared to a off the shelf firewall. Money is an object here and both places need wireless and vpn. currently they just have netgear routers with wirless access points.

Answer:*nix firewall vs off the shelf

"Off the shelf" products are usually very basic NAT routers, you get the basic hardware firewall protection, and the usual basic services such as DHCP, basic SPI. As you move away from the under 100 dollar "home grade" router range..and towards the 200-300 dollar business grade router get some VPN options, ability to build VPN tunnels, ability for the router to be a VPN server of various types, and a bit more "horsepower" (thus better performance for a network of computers..which may be too much for home grade routers), sometimes options like port based VLANs, ability to add ACL with better firewall features, etc. For a really want to stay away from home grade routers.

Now with some linux distros such as get more features...deeper SPI, Intrusion Detection, antivirus scanning, and spam removal, (Transparent proxy) as well as some good VPN features. Consider it more of a "Unified Threat Management" (UTM) appliance. Stick it on a higher range P3 or higher with 512 megs...and you now have an appliance that gives you enterprise grade performance and features that you'd be spending $5,000 or higher on if you bought a pre-build brand off the shelf. It'll easily handle the traffic and loads of a large network. Great for putting in front of an Exchange server also.

Endian is a great distro....I've used it at a few clients, it's too bad development and the community sort of died... Read more

I need to get a new PC, and most major manufacturers seem to offer pretty much the same sort of kit for my budget (650 - 700). I'm after 2056mb RAM, 250 or 320 GB Hard Drive and a decent graphics card, but most importantly it has to be quiet !I've heard Dell PC's are very quiet, but the graphics card they offer seems pretty poor (ATI Radeon X1300). Are there any major PC manufacturers offering a set up in my price range that are quiet ? And if so, are they to be recommended ?Many thanks

I have a Dell Inspiron 530. I would like a set of external speakers for it but I have been told by some people that because my computer is a Dell and because it is now quite a few years old, that any 'off the shelf' speakers won't work with it. Is that true? I don't want to have to spend a small fortune on a set, the budget won't stretch to a fancy set atm.
Any advice?
Thanks - Sarah.

I have no experience at all with network attached storage, so thought I might run some stuff past you other geeks.

I want NAS, but it doesn't need to be that large (300-500GB mebs). This will be for MKV encoded HD films, and high res camera RAW images.

I hear that the HDD + caddie options rely on FAT32, which makes me think I may have trouble with any files larger than 4GB (please correct me if i'm wrong, as you are wont to do) whereas off-the-shelf [eg.WD MyBook] is NTFS and therfore has a better file allocation system.

This system is simply going to share media across 2 laptops and 1 PC on a wireless network.

All 3 computers running Windows 7 Ultimate

Any advice, costs, alternatives or even your own system setup will be happily received

Answer:Advice on NAS. Caddie + HDD, or off-the-shelf?

This is what I do:

I have two external HDD: a 160GB and a 80GB. I hooked them both up to my wireless router which has USB support. After I got that to share over the network, I use my laptop and a program called allway-sync to syncronize the data between the two drives. It is not raid 1 that way, but it may be better. This setup also makes it easy for me to hook up my laptop directly to the drive (by disconnecting the USB from the router and plugging it into the laptop) so I can directly run a HDD check using seatools.

If I bought a cheap tower -compaq ive seen new for 225.00- can I just put my good graphics and sound card in it and get away with some decent use for a few years. I am a graphic designer and ive put together and upgraded towers but its takes so much time when im busy. I need a cheap affordable working tower
Many thanks for advice and ideas.

Answer:Cheap off the shelf tower

I am assuming that the price of 225 pounds if for the hardware as well. not just the tower chassi...

If you want to put in a decent graphics card you have to make sure that the motherboard will support one. That it has pci-e slots and so forth. also if you are graphics designer i suspect that you need a decent amount of ram and a pretty good cpu as well if i am not misstaken. Guess it depends on the level you are working on.

What you gain in buying pre built systems you loose on usually getting components that arent needed. For example sounds cards which are useless to someone in your position. Same goes for hard drive space sometimes. Most ppl have one allready. the list goes on. My recomendation if you want a "quick" solution and cheap is to buy a upgrade kit. This is usually comprised of a mobo, ram and cpu. The main components. All compatible with each other and most often a bit cheaper than buying them seperately. (although not allways, one store where i live charges exactly to the cent for the package the sum of the 3 components. so look at that first).
The rest of the components. like hard drive. psu, chassi etc are easily found.

Maybe give a link or write down the specs of the compaq system you are looking at?

I read the tutorial on overclocking and what to give it a try. My friend always says that to overclock you just adjust jumpers on the board? Whatever. I'm thinking of buying a bunch of these:

To make 1 shelf I would have one at each end of a a 4 post rack and have a piece of plywood spanning both. I would add a 2x4 at the end of the plywood on both shelves so the weight is concentrated at the front of each shelf reducing leverage. My intention is for this shelf to hold several big lead acid batteries, basically car batteries. I never weighed one of those batteries but they're quite heavy, if I had to guess, about 50 pounds. Even though these shelves are only rated at 50 pounds do you think they'll be able to handle more in my planned configuration? Idealy I want this as dense as possible, so probably like 4 batteries per shelf. (I only have 2 right now but future planing)

I got a free server rack, so I will dedicate it towards power backup. It has side panels, doors and all.

Answer:Custom rackmount shelf, will this be strong enough?

I wouldn't even bother with those shelves. Cut some 2x4s or 2x6s and bolt them into the front of the rack. Then another at the back of the rack. Lay down like three long 2x4s between those two. Lay down a sheet of plywood on top of that. Toss the batteries on top and see how it holds. If it flexes, put down some more 2x4s and recover with the plywood.

Like the top of this patio roof, just, inside your server rack.

Don't know what to think. Will MS build top shelf Phones or Middle to low end only? I ask this because of the recent news articles saying just that. So if MS doesn't build top of the line Windows phones, I understand HTC and LG are going to. What is the answer? I love my two Lumia phones, a Icon and a 1520 but was wondering if MS has it in its plans to continue to offer High End phones. IMHO to compete, they should.

Answer:Don't know what to think...Will MS build top shelf phones or middle to low end only?

In my opinion...
It would be a smart move to stay low end for a while.
Let the consumer buy, make judgements about the OS then go for the throat with sweeter hardware if things incline.
Someone I know who fiddled with my 925 for a test drive remarked:"Gee this thing is pretty advanced for a year old phone."

I'm having trouble finding the ideal slide out 6-12ish inch tray to put a switch and router on in a cabinet. Preferably vented.

I want to find a light duty two post 19 inch slide out tray that doesn't have screws or other extrusions that extend into the sidewall area.

The cabinet this tray would be going in has solid sides and a lot of the slide out shelves are four post, have adjustment screws sticking off them or are just completely over built.

What have you used that you like? Any ideas?

Answer:Windows 7 Starter ISO?

Hello 55joe4, welcome to Seven Forums!

You can use the information in this tutorial at the link below to put the Windows 7 installer on a USB stick to do the install from.

USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

Though since you've had Linux on the PC it would be best to do a complete wipe of the Hard Disk Drive using the Windows installer first using the information below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, use Step One of this tutorial at the link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive. Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.
Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional partitions after the installation completes if ... That's normal for Win 7 Starter.

I have never heard of Oceanis before, but the reviews I saw look decent and none of my protection alerted me on it's site. I won't guarantee it's safe, but it looks OK.

You can upgrade the netbook to Home Basic or Home Premium if you want to pay for it. I installed Pro on my tablet/netbook. Starter was very silly for it since Starter doesn't support the touch screen features.

Question: Windows 7 Starter

I hooked up a Velocity Micro #101 to my ASUS Eee PC 1005HAB-RBLU005S and it came up just like it's suppose to, so I slipped in the driver disk and installed the software. When it was done I closed the program because I not going to be using it at that time. When I looked into Windows Explorer it was not there. I cannot seem to get this thing to work on my computer. It works fine on my desktop but not my mini notebook (for which I bought the darn thing). Can anyone please tell me why it's there and then it isn't there? I have played around with this for so long I am about to throw the darn thing right out the window. I'm deadly serious!! I've used my neighbors external drive and had not one problem so I know it's not that my system can't handle it. HELP!!! HELP!!!

Answer:Windows 7 Starter

When it was done I closed the program because I not going to be using it at that time. What exactly is meant by, "closed the program"?Usually, the safest method to installing external hardware is to run the setup media first and connect the device when prompted. If you would like to try this method, uninstall the driver(s)/software for the device from Add/Remove Programs (if it is listed). If there is nothing in the Add/Remove Programs; uninstall the device from within Device Manager. Reboot the machine after removal of driver(s) and try to install the device by first running setup media. If still no joy, we can try something else.

My desktop PC has W98SE, but I am "test-driving" a Samsung laptop that has Windows 7 Starter on it. And I am having a lot of trouble with it. What in blazes is W7 "Starter"? Is it a pared-down version?

The trouble is aside from the fact that W7 is in Spanish, and I have to use a loco touchpad instead of a mouse, most problems have a lot to do with the fact that W7 doesn't have any DOS!!

This is supposedly to make the OS idiot proof, but I've found that leaving all the fixing of stuff up to Windows is often a big mistake.

Apparently, the owner hadn't made any backups to fall back on. And I've already acquired some stuff I don't want. With no CD ROM, there's no way to reinstall the OS. And I wasn't given any CD with the operating system on it, anyway.

I can't go into DOS and extract a file, either. I've had to do such things often. Windows Scandisk is often not good enough, and I need to do a customized version in DOS, which sometimes finds more errors. How can I change a file's attributes? Or delete a file that is in use by Windows? And I find no equivalent of System File Checker. How can I get by with no DOS or Safe Mode?

I wanted to see how certain games and utilities I have had a long time would work on this new system, so I e-mailed a bunch to the laptop. I'd sent zip files, and the laptop only seemed able to unzip one or two. But the worst part was trying to install anything. I obviously don'... Read more

Basically a friend of mine has a system ( XP ) where the whole thing starts up ok , you log on etc etc but the minute it logs on the screensaver comes on then the whole system reverts to the log on screen again!!. The system will not clear itself despite numerous " restores ". The system can be started in safe mode but any clues would be most helpful.
I thank you in advance

Answer:Windows non starter

Did you try disabling the screensaver while in safe mode? Make sure it is not on at all and is not loading at startup either in the startup folder under Program Files or, though not likely, in the registry.

Question: Windows 7 Starter

So my fiancee's laptop was getting blue screens and huge problems. It wasn't even booting up fully without restarting.

We supposed it was the hard drive.

We replaced the hard drive. The only thing is that we needed from the hard drive was:

Windows 7 Starter.

It was a dell inspiron mini 1018 so it doesn't have a cd drive, so the only solution is installing it through the usb drive.

I want to re-install windows 7 starter (with the key we have), use the windows dvd tool and get Windows 7 Starter installed fresh onto the laptop.

Now from what I understand, Windows 7 Starter is included in some of the other iso's. You just have to find a way to allow windows to let you choose which windows to install.

I downloaded the .eicfg removal utility. I removed it from the iso and then used windows dvd tool to move it to the usb drive.

But when I booted from windows and started the install it never gave any option of which windows to install.

(I downloaded the Windows 7 Ultimate Premium x86).

So. What did I do wrong? What should I change to get this laptop up and running with the new hard drive???

I would appreciate any steps and help you could give me!

Answer:Windows 7 Starter

I'm not sure why that didn't work for you.

I just tried it with the home premium ISO X17-58996 towards the bottom here,

Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River ? My Digital Life

Did you get the confirmation window that it was removed?

Ei.cfg removal tool

After doing the above I was given the option of Starter through Ultimate.

Question: Windows 7 Starter

Hello All,

I'm interested in peoples opinion of Windows 7 Starter.

I'm am undecided as to whether install this or Linux Mint on my fathers PC. Are the requirement lower (and performance better), than Pro?

He has 2GB RAM and a Celeron processor.

Pro was terrible, very, very, slow.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Windows 7 Starter

Hey,can you give me a bit more detailed information about your computer?
I have Celeron processor too(2.8Ghz) and 2GB RAM and I've installed windows 7 ULTIMATE and it runs pretty fast.

I'm sure your computer can run more than windows 7 starter. So,if you install windows starter ,than you're gonna have no problems with performance!

But ,before you start installation, you should consider that Windows 7 starter is VERY limited! You won't be able to:
1.Use aero theme(just windows basic)
2.Change windows background,sound scheme,glass colors...

Just make shortcuts for all that or any other solution ?

If you right click on the desktop you'll pop up a menu, click the personalize tab.

A box should pop up, on the left of the box there is a option, change desktop icons. Click that and you can change the icons on the desktop.

I have a Samsung notebook with Windows 7 Starter edition. I put a password on my windows startup not long before I went on holiday but when I came back I forgot it.

I have searched Internet for help and so far this is what I've done -

Says I should put reboot disc in but doesn't have disc drive.
Says I should try bootable flash drive, changed Bios startup but won't boot from it.
Tried complete restore, still boots up with my user
Tried booting in safe mode, just boots as normal

Can anyone help?

Answer:Windows 7 Starter Help

We can't really help bypass a password since we have no way to know this is your computer.

I'd consider Reinstalling Windows 7 from booted DVD
or running full Factory Recovery from its partition at boot(which may also require a password) or from Recovery Disks you already made or order from Samsung.

Can I remote desktop from windows 7 starter to any computer with XP or 7, without upgrading to 7 Premium? I am looking to buy a net book that has 7 starter loaded on it, but if it can't remote connect then I need to rethink it. I know most net book's do not have enough RAM to run 7.

Answer:Windows 7 starter RDT

Starter has remote desktop, but you can only connect from that computer and not to it. So, you can remote from your netbook running starter to another computer running 7 Pro, Ultimate, or Enterprise (or XP Pro), but you can't connect from 7 Pro, Ultimate, or Enterprise (or XP Pro) to your netbook running starter.

It's all covered on the Microsoft website.

Question: windows 7 starter

hi i have a samsung netbook and i want to reinstall windows
does any body now where i can get a disc ?

i have an external dvd drive to do the reinstall + i can get the drivers from samsung web site i just need the windows disc or some thing i can down load to do the format

thank you

Answer:windows 7 starter

You should be able to restore the default OS that shipped with the netbook using the recovery partition. Try tapping F4 repeatedly at boot, it should launch recovery. Check first under Start menu- All programs for something called Samsung Recovery Solution (or something similar) and try to launch recovery from there. See this page for a guide.

How To Use Samsung Recovery Solution 4 my samsung

Factory restores are usually destructive, so back up critical data before attempting this. This process will recover your computer to the condition it was in when you unboxed it, including all Samsung bloatware. If you want just the OS, you'll need a disk, google for a clean iso.

Have the awful situation where I have seemingly kippered a friends Lenovo G510 Laptop. Having overcome several problems - I was looking through the device manager details, and (stupidly) checked the graphics driver details - to find an update was indeed available. This I did, but on a restart the laptop just went to a black-screen, and when I touched the mouse pad, a cursor appeared and everything just 'stopped'.

repeated start ups have not brought forward the usual options
The 'F' keys do not allow me to get to safe or start up etc.
Any help / suggestions would be very much appreciated. I am fairly computer literate, but this one is causing me grief.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I hope I have posted this in the correct section.

Answer:Windows 10 Non Starter HELP!!!!

Hi Skofab.

Once you start powering up and as soon as you see the circling dots, press and hold power switch. It should go down hard. Repeat, you need to do this at least twice. On the third power up it should take you to advance Startup options. Tutorial attached.

Advanced Startup Options - Boot to in Windows 10

I saw you were doing this from post, likely a timing issue as to when you killed.

Another option if you a another windows 10 machine. Create a Recovery drive and boot from it. On working machine type Recovery Drive in search bar and follow process. It will likely ask for 8GB USB key. You can boot from this.

Question: windows 7 starter

my girlfriend just bought the new mini 10 v from dell with what we thought was windows 7 home edition but ended up being starter. It seems stupid. it cant do shake or the windows pop up windows for viewing your open programs. I only received it a couple hours ago but we are really upset with it. She is the most bummed about not even being able to change the background image at all. Should we send it back and just go for a full upgrade or is there something that is worth the 300$ we paid for the mini.

Answer:windows 7 starter

Don't take this wrong, no offence intended.

You get what you pay for. You could return it and buy a different computer, or you could upgrade it yourself. If you're a student, you can pick up a copy of Home Premium or Professional for $30.

My point is, you are asking a question that nobody but yourself can answer. Personally, I could not survive with the Starter, but each user has different needs.

Starter edition is severely crippled compared to Home Premium. You can change the background but it is not easy and if you not familiar with editing the registry and messing with permissions, leave well enough alone.

Edit: you may want to look at option #3.

Question: Windows 7 starter

My son bought a EEEPC 1001 or something like that.
It has W7 starter as OS.
Is this netbook capable of running any of the higher spec W7 Os's without to much of a problem? Without getting back to him I don't know what the ram situation is.
Any hints or advice on that?

Answer:Windows 7 starter

As long as he has at least 1GB it should be able to run 32-bit Windows 7. All he should need is Home Premium. If he can upgrade the RAM to 2GB, that would be better, but it can run on 1GB fine. If it's less than 1GB, I would definitely upgrade straight to 2GB.

Question: Windows 7 Starter

i have an asus eeepc 1005hab with 1gb ram that i recently installed windows 7 starter on and i noticed that it is having some problems with streaming video. the video and audio stutters horribly until the load bar gets all the way across then it plays just fine. never had these problems when it had xp on it. just wondering if this is a driver problem or not enough ram, or just an issue with the os and if there is anything i do to fix it...

many thanks.

Answer:Windows 7 Starter

Well, after a look at Asus's website, it appears that they don't have Windows 7 drivers for that particular model, unfortunately. Only XP drivers.

Windows 7 does the best it can to provide basic functionality with the generic drivers it installs, but you really need the proper ones (chipset, audio, graphics, touchpad, etc...) to get full functionality.

Yes, it would possibly run better with 2GB of RAM (I upgraded mine), but without proper drivers, you aren't going to see much of an improvement.

Windows 7 is a great operating system, but it can't be enjoyed to the full extent if you don't have the proper drivers. It's just going to stutter and choke, especially on a netbook.

I would recommend you go back to XP as Asus does not provide Windows 7 support (i.e. drivers) for their older netbooks (as opposed to the new ones coming out with Win7 Starter preinstalled).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

This 16bit software ran fine on my previous pc, which had Windows 7 Starter 32-bit. But the 64 bit Windows 7 version wont run it, I cant use Windows XP Mode on my version of Windows 7, need Pro - Ultimate Version.

Answer:windows 7 starter not allowing other windows machine to stream video

It could be that your Windows XP machines do not have the correct codec to play the movie. is the movie trying to play in Windows media player? If so you may want to use VLC media player. It will play anything.

Also, you may want to check the permissions on the shared folder. users will need the read and execute permission.

Since my son no longer uses his Asus PEM 1015 I was going to start using it myself. This laptop has always been kept up to date with MS updates, the Browser, AV & Flash. About a week ago I noticed Windows Updates would no longer work. It just keeps checking for updates for hours with no results & no error codes. I tried fixing it using suggestions I've read on line & using tools from MS. However the problem was never resolved.

About 3 days ago I decided to start fresh since my son was not going to use this laptop again & I did a System Recovery to bring back the laptop to it's original start day. When I do a System Recovery everything works well again until MS Updates updates my Windows Agent automatically to Windows Agent to 7.6.7600.320. At this point everything breaks down & Windows Updates runs constantly without ever finding any results or giving me any error codes. I've also tried suggestions online at this point & have used MS tools & the only thing that works temporarily is doing another System Recovery. This works temporarily until MS Updates updates my WU Agent again automatically to 7.6.7600.320 & the issue starts again. I've already done a System Recovery 4x already & everything works well again until MS updates automatically the Windows Agent to 7.6.7600.320.

Can anyone here please help me.

Hi, Everyone this is my 1st post, I had been reading Sevenforums before i actually join it. Eversince then i got most of my doubt solve.

I just bought a Sony Vaio Y series come with Windows 7 Starter.

I got a bad deal form Malaysia giving windows 7 stater and 320gb hd, whereas S'pore giving Windows 7 home premiun and 500hd. Anyway i like the design and portability of this model.

I got a Year Warranty, But i'm wanted to upgrade it to Win7 Ent. and also wanted to upgrade my ram to 4GB max. my existing one is 2GB. but i afraid this would void the warranty.

Let get my question i wanted to update to Win7 Ent with out and not keeping my starter. but i afraid of driver issue, i plan to boot by USB setup.

Any advice?

Answer:Install Windows 7 Enterprise on Netbook Replacing Windows 7 Starter

Yeah -- warranty advice can only properly come from the warranty holder (despite what others here may tell you). So, you need to check with Sony support to see if performing such a Win7 upgrade will compromise your warranty in any way. My guess would be that it would not -- but (like everyone else posting here) -- that is only a guess.

I've just ordered a 120GB SSD to put in my HP Mini that runs Windows 7 Starter Edition. (Hopefully it will make it faster!). Since I don't have the original install disk (it never came with one when new) what's the best way to transfer the OS to the new disk? I have a converter in which I can put the SSD to connect it via one of the USB sockets to 'load' the OS to it and I can make an Image of the C: drive before removing it.
Is there a recommended transfer program that will work OK under the Starter edition of Windows 7? If there is, I could use that.
All ideas welcome. Thanks, tallboy

Hi Chaps
I have a problem with Windows 7 Starter on a brand new ACER Netbook

I am using the netbook soley to run a powerpoint presentation in a care home,

The VGA output goes to a PC / TV convertor then the composite goes to an RF modulator then its distributed throughout the TV network

When the netbook is open and the screen shows the presentation then the TV pics are great...Yippee. However.

When I close the net book the remote pictures degrade to an unrecognisable mush.
Ive tried setting the power so that when the lid is closed "DO NOTHING" but for some reason the screen still goes blank and the remote screens again goes to mush.

I dont need to access the screen so burn is not a problem if I can get the "DO NOTHING" control to do what it should.
To test this I used my VAIO with the same settings and all was OK. The picture on the slave sets was good and stayed on (cloned) from the main net book screen.

Only other thing Ive tried is to look as the RES on the 2nd monitor but because its a PC/TV converter I get no options.

Any help would be appreciated.......Even if someone knows how to bypass the hard switch on the ACER NET BOOK

Thanks in advance

You would have to purchase some xp disk that has some legal way to activate it.You may then have to find and slipstream in drivers (if they even exist) to the CD most likely to get it to load. There are ways to make windows 7 a bit more xp like.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Hi all one of the kids just bought a dell mini laptop with windows 7 starter installed, I am after some recommendations for a free firewall and anti ?virus On the other comps we use, Zonealarm and Avast. would these be compatible with windows 7 starter any recommendations much appreciated.

Answer:Security for windows 7 starter

Windows firewall should be good enough. If you used avast before use it again. Then maybe add Superantispyware and Malwarebytes and you cant go far wrong with those. And off course add Spywareblaster.

My son received as a gift a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 laptop, with pre-inatalled Windows 7 Starter Edition (according the My Computer Properties).

I think he answered a kind of No to a security question (maybe related to Windows Firewall), because now he has an annoyng problem.

He tries to make Windows Updates; number of important updates were already made, but the last 49 updates are in status of downloading; I'd say "perpetual downloading". For example now the system reports 49 important updates of 443 MB; from two days ago (more than 48 hours) were downloaded of this amount only 1%. So, I think the downloading is "working", but extremely slow.

Some notes: Windows Updates are enabled and set as automatic. All other kind of downloading are working very well; for example, I downloaded Avast Personal Edition (53 MB) at 1.2 MB/sec, Adobe Acrobat Reader (45 MB) at 976 KB/sec, so there are no problems with my connection or downloading - generally speaking.

My son tells me that at the beginning (6-7 days ago), when he received his gift, updates were downloading... reasonnably (as he can remember), he didn't notice anything strange.

Now, I am a specialist in informatics (programming, using, trainings), I work in this area from more than 35 years ago. But I'm not a specialist in configuring operating systems like Windows 7. I tried to see settings under Windowsd Firewall which can imply such a behaviour: all downloading work fine, excepting downloading in Window... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 Starter Edition

Here's what you should try first. Set Windows Updates to ask before downloading and installing updates. Then do 2 or 3 at a time. It might take a little longer, but it usually solves problems like the one you are experiencing. If it doesn't work let me know. I have a couple other tricks up my sleeve.

Answer:windows 7 starter netbook

You really should upgrade the RAM (which should be easy according to pictures of the bottom of that netbook), but otherwise I'm fairly sure Windows 10 run fine on it.

My grandaughters S10-2 that I bought for her last March is having problems with Windows 7 Starter.  I tried to upgrade to the full version of Windows 7 but about 30% into the download it stopped and could not be completed.  Is there any way to get Windows 7 Starter downloaded again to the netbook so I can download the full version? Thanks,  Carl Clay123

Answer:S10-2 How can I get Windows 7 Starter downloaded

use one key recover button ( arrow sign ) to perform clean windows installation.
( shut down your computer > then press )

Does Windows 7 starter allow ReadyBoost to be used? My computer has 3 USB 2.0 ports and it says none of them are supported. I don't get why it won't work.

Answer:ReadyBoost Windows 7 Starter

As far as I know only certain USB flash drives actually support ReadyBoost, those that are fast enough for the job at least, unless someone else can correct me on that. Flash drives from Corsair typically support ReadyBoost, and possibly from others such as SanDisk or OCZ.

Hope this helps.

I have two browsers the installed Internet explorer which shouldn't have any problems as I haven't done anything and I have google chrome,

Google Chrome has sound working, Ie does not.

I need to find out why as I really don't want to end up getting into mega trouble for not having sound working.

I'm not thinking this as a major sound problem,

I have tried the multimedia tap in internet explorer, the mute is not on, so yeah?

Any ideas?

Answer:IE8 - No Sound In Windows 7 Starter

Try resetting IE.

Internet Explorer - Reset

Help trying to do a fresh install on this but can't seem to find the recovery console or what ever I do the F8 for advanced start up but recovery is not an option try F11 but no recovery management. anyone have pointers? I am not too familiar with Windows 7

Answer:hp mini with windows 7 starter

You must press F11 as soon as you switch on the computer - if you miss the right moment it won't do anything.

If that doesn't work, switch off, switch on again and try F10 instead.

ive bought a good used notepad.
Median E1222 which has windows 7 starter installed. I removed some rubbish from it but sure it's still slower that it should be.
I'm thinking of either wiping it or putting say Windows 7 home or pro on it.

Can you advise please where I need to check to see if the spec of it etc will be ok to upgrade.

Answer:Windows 7 Starter Upgrade

See if this helps -

Unless the RAM has already been upgraded you will need to up it to at least 2GB, preferably 4GB. We run an older Medion here with 4GB and it ran 7, and now 10 just fine.

I'm interested in buying the ASUS 1005HA-P netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition. I'll be doing Home Networking, Surfing the net, entering forums on the net, and maybe some light word processing and mobile networking. No need to do any heavy duty business apps or spreadsheets. Does anyone have any comments on the starter edition?

My emachines MiniNetbook laptop has been giving me issues lately (not a surprise since it's been trouble from 4days now). I decided today I couldn't deal with it anymore and I started a system recovery. Everything seemed to go off without any issues until it decided to start up again and now I get the error:

Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation".

I've restarted several times and even tried to start it in safe mode. Nothing is working. I can't get it to start up no matter what I do. I do NOT have any disks for it (if you needed to know that). It is a MiniNetbook.

Can anyone help me with what I need to do from here please? Any help much appreciated. BTW, my technical skills are low so please, take it easy on me. Specs are: HDD--160GB, RAM:1GB PROCESSOR:1.66

Answer:Windows 7 Starter --emachines

It is a Windows 7 Starter OS

I have been doing looking into these different versions, which obviously isnt doing what MS said they would do and limit the number of versions, although it looks like Home Basic and Home Premium are all people will really need, and home premium will probably be the standard, But my real wonder lies with this Windows 7 Starter Edition, the main fault is that it only allows 3 simultaneous applications to run, now im not sure how microsoft will decide to limit them:will it be just items that have a window on the taskbar? If so I can see about a million tweaks to move your applications to the system tray to get more running, this doesent seem like a viable way to limit.or maybe will MS just limit the number of non os processes to 3?this is my worry, because anyone who encouters any type of malware could easily hit 3 applications just at that, and be blocked out of their own machine, preventing them from even running tools to fix itor maybe theres a better way that im not seeing?anyone have any real insight or ideas on how this is being done?
