Preferred Solution: ALT + F4 Shut down windows icon - disabler

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows 10 brought us Cortana. Edge. A brand new Start Menu. Oh, and a host of new and extended ways for Microsoft to capture data on your activities.

Fortunately 2015 has also seen the growth of a whole new market for programs to turn these technologies off again, and Win10 Spy Disabler is the latest example.
The program is a sub-2MB download which unzips 32 and 64-bit executables. Just double-click the appropriate version for you, or run the 32-bit if you?re unsure.

Launch the program and it displays a list of 20+ "privacy tweaks" you can apply. Some are clearly Windows 10-specific ("Always Send DoNotTrack on IE/ Edge", "Prevent Wifi Sense from connecting to open hotspots"), others are a little more ambiguous ("Disable Telemetry & Data Collection"), and a few are standard privacy tweaks for any recent Windows version ("Disable Recent Files, Folders, Docs, Progs").

If you?re looking for fine control then this probably isn?t the program for you. "Disable Cortana, WebSearch, BingSearch" is a single option, for instance: if you only want to disable one of those, you?re out of luck.

Still, Win10 Spy Disabler does a good job of keeping you safe, by offering to create a system restore point before applying any tweaks.

There?s also a bonus "System Tweaks" tab which gives easy access to more general Windows settings: "Show Hidden and System Files", "Disable Windows Remote Assist... Read more

I want to make this part of my unattended install:

I am following a guide on how to customise windows 10. I have at least my storage drivers since they are compatible between windows 7 & 10. I have a copy of windows 10 pro and an activation code. I'm using NTlite to customise the .wim files. However the guy who wrote the guide said my question on how to use this script in my install was better asked elsewhere.

I wrote a quick batch script to disable some of the Windows 10 telemetry.

It's interactive, safe*, and easy to use.

Download Link: Script

I'm working on a more comprehensive application to control the telemetry in windows 10. A true C++ application, but there's a lot more testing to be done before I can share that.

* Safe, but some options are permanent.

My last Spybot check found two entrees: Windows Security Center Anti Virus Disabler & Windows Security Center Firewall Disabler. I removed them. I run Spybot weekly. In between scans I noticed my Firewall & Virus protection were disabled at start-up. At first I was able to click on & enable them but then twice within 5 days I got the blue screen stop error (0X0000008E) right at the time these two items were loading. I hope by removing these items with Spybot Search & Destroy I have solved the bigger problem of the stop error. Has anyone else had this situation?

Question: Add-on disabler?

I get that pop-up ever so often. Looks legit, but thought I'd ask before messing with it.Thanks in advance.

Answer:Add-on disabler?

You're using Internet Explorer 9, right? (You didn't say). This is the "Speed up browsing by disabling add-ons Message" that annoys many people. Depending on which version of Windows you have. You cannot remove it from Internet Explorer's menus or options, but you can do these things:You can increase the average page load time delay limitWhen the popup notification message appears again, click on "Choose add-ons" button. It'll open a new window. Now look at the bottom of the window. You'll see "Tell me when the delay caused by add-ons exceeds:" option. It would be set to 0.20 seconds by default. Click on the drop-down box and set it to 10.00 seconds. Click on "Done" button and it should disable the popup notification message, or at least make it not appear very often. You can disable it by using Group Policy Editor available in some versions of Windowshttp://www.onlinecomputertips.com/windows/ie9_addon_message.htmlor by editing the Registry (This is ONLY for people that know what they are doing!)Under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies - add a new sub-key Ext - create a DWORD value named DisableAddonLoadTimePerformanceNotifica tions - value 1 - no popups, value 0 - popups enabled.

A few days ago, I was reading through the posts to see if someone else was having the same kind of problem I was experiencing on my wife's computer. One of the experts utilized a utility which disabled the autorun on thumb drives, external Hard Drives, etc. and installed a mini-program which prevented any future auto-runs. I use a lot of external storage between computers. I would like to protect my machines from bad things transferred this way. Does any one know of this utility? Is it appropriate for my planned usage. Question: Antivirus Disabler

I am running Norton Antivirus with automatic updates enabled, but today I got a popup from the program telling me the virus definitions were out of date. I tried updating them manually but the same popup came up so I figured there was a problem. I ran spybot and found this result:

Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SecurityCenter\AntiVirusDisableNotify=dword:0

I tried fixing the problem through spybot but it just shows up again upon reboot. Here is my HJT log. Not sure if this is something I should be worried about or not, as I don't seem to have any other issues. Any help is appreciated.

A lot of weird stuff keeps happening to my computer. Just today the shut down button disappeared only leaving me to log off, which then from there I can shut down. Also at the same time when I try to open task manager it says it has been disabled. I only shut down my computer on occasion because I only like to hibernate it which I know is bad and leads to self destruction of OS files. Could it just be a virus? I do have over 34,158 unrepairable errors that counterspy detected, which I think just might be my new record. Any good anti-virus software or help to find my task manager and such?
Thanks

Thanks in advance... Bob

Answer:Can I put a shortcut icon on my desktop to shut down my computer?

Try this:
Right click on an empty space on the desktop, then click New - Shortcut. In the box that pops up, type the following:
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0
This should give you a double click shortcut to shutdown. Alternatively, you can drag this shortcut icon to your task bar, and you'll have a single click shutdown.
Let us know if you get it working!

Works flawlessly. It's a nice tool to handle all privacy settings in one place instead of using the built in switches that are spread all over various submenus in settings. But to be fair we should also mention here that the tool does nothing that could not also be achieved using the built in tools like gpedit, settings and registry tweaks.

Hey there - some web sites have right click disabled for whatever reason. It boggles my mind. Anyways - I remember years back seeing some sort of work around that disabled this.

Anybody know how to do this in Firefox? I think when I saw it it was before Firefox had even come out.

Similarly - any way to bypass when pages have "view source" disabled?

Answer:How to disable right click disabler in Firefox?

There's always View - Page Source in Firefox and View - Source in IE... never found a webpage that could stop either of those methods.

You can always load up a word processor and do File - Open and copy/paste the URL directly; Word and most other word processors will load the webpage directly as though it was just another HTML document as required.

Hello everyone,

It's been 3 months I'm having this problem. All the icons of my desktops have disappeared, but i can access what was present on my desktop from "my documents" folder.

Also, the right click option of my mouse no more works on the desktop.

The recycle bin is always empty, even when i send items to it. Which means when i delete an item, i lose it completely!

My shut down and stand-by options have also disappeared from my task bar. I have to log off to be able to shut the computer.

A friend advised me to use Combofix to get rid of this problem.

I am doubtful of what to do will be grateful if i can get advice from you! Please let me know.

Thanks!

Answer:No icon on desktop, computer, shut down option no more on task bar

ComboFix is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. With the combination of problems that you have I suspect that you may have an infection. I will ask a moderator to move this topic to the Am I Infected forum where there are highly trained staff members who are best suited to tackle your problem. Please be patient, they are very busy.

Hi. I was carefully following the Major Geeks malware removal guide for Vista O/S, and while running MG Tools, Kaspersky popped-up with a severe warning that the file "c:\MGtools\temp\xlmpolexp.txt" had a trojan "Trojan.WinREG.Disabler.h". The initial Kaspersky warning asked if I wanted to delete this, and I chose yes.

Then it came back with another critical warning stating, that "..file contains Trojan program and cannot be deleted: object is not found". It lists the same location as given above in a MGtools temp file. The only option it offers now is to "Skip: Attempt of access to the file will be blocked. File will not be changed or deleted." I have checked the C:\MGtools\temp folder and it's empty. All hidden files are exposed, per your earlier instructions in the guide.

I haven't chosen that option yet as I want to be sure that 1)the Kaspersky warning is not a false positive (I can't find anything useful on this when I search on the internet), and 2) if this is the real thing, I'd like to leave it open to being removed from my system.

I know MGtools would not habor any trojans. I know you guys are careful and I've never had a problem with anything from your site in the past. (BTW, thanks for the volumes of info and software you share. It's helped me tremendously in the past, and I trust your site!)

One of my laptops has developed a problem. It started with a notification that Sysprotect detected a blackworm virus on my laptop. I deleted it but I keep getting a pop-up to sell me a spyware removal application. When I deleted that, my browser crashes. When I try to use the internet again I get the standard warning that an error has occurred, would I like to send a copy to Microsoft, etc... This of course closes my browser again. I have to use my desktop to connect to this forum because my laptop won't stay up long enough. I haven't detected any other trouble with it if it is not connected to the internet. I downloaded HJT, here are my results.

Honestly, I waste more productive time every day struggling to UNDO all of the endless "Auto Formatting" mandates that Microsoft insists on forcing down our throats [whether we want them or not], that I'm starting to loose it. Is there any clearly defined way to PERMANENTLY turn them OFF .... ?

Even when I go into the WORD OPTIONS --> PROOFING and turn each and every one of those Auto Formatting annoyances off... they just wont' PERMANENTLY go away ! Even on the document that I have open ?? Whether it's changing the spacing between paragraphs / or font style / or margin setting.. you name it... they just won't go away. And then I'm forced to spend endless time trying to get the document the way "I" want it to look... and as soon as I do that... some other part of the document gets it's formatting screwed up.

What am I doing wrong ? Is it something with a template or other file or what ? This AutoFormatting is driving me crazy !

I'm having a big problem. I screwed something up with my taskbar and I can't undo it.

I logged on as usual. An annoying message popped up at the lower right corner of the desktop, above, not in, the taskbar, alerting me to something I should download and install that I have no intention of downloading and installing. In the past, each time I've logged on and this message has appeared, I have simply clicked on "cancel" or just clicked the X at its upper right corner. But this time, I must have taken leave of my senses! Instead of just right clicking the X in its right corner, I clicked something else on it and a message window popped up. That message window advised me to either "download" the irrelevant auxiliary toolbar I have no need of and will not download and install, or click "cancel". But it also offered me the chance to click a checkbox next to "do not show this message again on taskbar". At least that's what I recall it said. So I clicked on that, in an attempt to keep it from popping up every time I logged on (removing the annoying message from the action center each time it popped up upon logon never had the effect of preventing it from popping up again the next time I logged on, which is why I tried this "do not show ..." choice this time).

But once I did that, I found I am no longer able to make two things work on my desktop taskbar with the customary left clicks.

It no longer does ... Read more

Have you done a restart to see if this sorts out the problem? (Note: a Restart does not use the hybrid shutdown process but instead does a full shutdown and restart)

Next thing to try is a repair of the system files: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2895-sfc-command-run-windows-10-a.html

I don't want to combine my windows, but when i have only one window open in any program, i know what it is and don't need to see the label as that makes the whole taskbar filled up pretty fast.
Is there a way to hide labels when there is one window open, and show labels when having multiple windows?
I've tried googling it but it doesn't seem like it is possible with some program either.

Answer:Taskbar, only icon when one window, icon+label when multiple windows?

Nevermind, catered to my needs by altering the minimum width of the taskbar "entries".

Hi,
I recently bought 2 Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D-138 laptops; one for me and one for my parents. I have been setting both of them up. They both came with Vista, and as Toshiba instructs, I made recovery discs, and then I downgraded to XP.
It appeared to go smoothly enough, but then when I shut down either computer, they would automatically restart. The only way to shut either down completely is to hold my finger down on the power button. What I have taken to doing is allowing it to shut down, then as I hear the fans re-activate, I then hold down the button and it shuts down properly.
At first I thought this was a Toshiba problem, so I checked their website, and I rang them a couple of times. They talked me through a couple of different options, and in 'Toshiba Modem' in the Device Manager, I unchecked a box that said 'restart on standby' or something...
This didn't solve the problem. I rang again, we did other things (sorry for lack of information, but as I now believe it is a Windows problem, I don't really think anything they said or did for me was of much help.)
Anyway, both computers still restarted when I shut them down, so I googled it, and on a Microsoft forum came up with: Right click on My Computer, go into Properties; click on Start up and failure, uncheck box that says 'automatic restart'. I don't claim to know much about computers, but I imagine the point of that little system is that when something is going wrong, the comp... Read more

Hi .Ati2mtag.sys is a video driver, installed for any system possessing an ATI video card/chip.http://www.file.net/process/ati2mtag.sys.htmlHaving possessed various ATI cards previously...I can attest that yours is a fairly common situation. I suspect that the driver has been somehow damaged and needs to be replaced by an undamaged version. What I would do is, once the system boots, remove the installed video drivers (using Device Manager)...then reboot and reinstall the drivers. How to update a Windows hardware driver - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-update-a-windows-hardware-driver/ The STOP0X0000007A noted in the error message...indicates that this is a hardware error. Component drivers are considered hardware, so I would try the uninstall/reinstall for the video drivers. As for shutdown problems...every version of Windows has those. Some have solutions, others are more obtuse. You might take a look at Troubleshoot XP Shutdown Problems (MS) - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308029 AND Troubleshooting Windows XP Shutdown Issues - http://www.theeldergeek.com/shutdown_issues_in_xp.htm If you read through the links provided, you will see that the suggestions made by Toshiba personnel...followed a known, logical sequence.Louis

So a lot of people are complaining about the Windows 10 icon that shows in your icon tray after the KB3035583, which allows you to reserve your Windows 10 copy right away. Even thought you reserve it, it'll stay there. In order to remove it, you simply have to remove it from the start-up (and it's in the Task Scheduler). To do this, follow the instructions below.Edit: Added two other methods, one of which (Method 3) only hides it in the extended icon tray. Only Method 1 and Method 2 will prevent it from launching.Method 1 - Using AutorunsDownload Autoruns.zip from the Sysinternals Suite webpage;Extract the content of the Autoruns.zip folder where you want, then go in the folder, right-click on Autoruns.exe and select Run as Administrator;Accept the EULA on opening, then wait for all the entries to load;Click on Options and uncheck Hide Microsoft Entries, then wait for Autoruns to load the additional entries; In the Filter zone, enter gwx;Entrie related to GWX (Get Windows 10) will appear. Uncheck:\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\launchtrayprocess\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\refreshgwxconfigRestart your computer, and you're done;To enable it, simply check these entries back.Method 2 - Using Task Scheduler (credits to Dragonlady24 for the method and instructions)Original post: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/578100/remove-the-get-windows-10-icon-from-the-icon-tray/page-2#entry3723214The procedure has been modified to be more comprehensible and include instructions for both ... At Windows 7, I created 3 program shortcuts which execute same executable. Then I changed icons for second shortcut and third shortcut. When I launched the executable from the second and third shortcut, the taskbar icon of the executable will be that of the shortcut icon instead of the executable MainForm icon. In XP and Vista, it will use MainForm icon in the taskbar. Is this the intended behaviour of Windows 7?

When i clicked on one of these icons to open a session it would show that shortcut icon on the taskbar.

Hey there,

Lenovo E440 that ran excellent until recently. About a week or two ago I got an error message about a power surge on a USB port. Didn't really seem to effect much so I moved on. Lately, when shutting down, it hangs for a few minutes... just sitting at the final "Shutting Down" screen. After a while, it kicks off - except yesterday where it BSOD - twice. Any ideas? When I turn it back on, get the standard prompt for safe mode or start windows normally. In the event logs, I see nothing other than the kernel critical error.

No major software/hardware changes recently that I can remember.

Thanks!

My Dell XPS 8700, I bought from Dell has been a pretty good machine. But then I started seeing the modem failing to initialize. It would do this for so long, I'd have to get up an walk away for awhile. Other times only a system restore would fix it, but even that wasn't guaranteed. I noticed when I gave up and finally just want to reboot that it would hang on "Windows is shutting down," but never would. My last resort then is to do a hard shut down. Only problem then is that it would hang on "Please wait while your computer is updating." Only it would never boot back up. If it leave it like this overnight then sometimes I wake up to the desktop but the modem is still not engaged. The modem is a cable modem and it was JUST changed out to a newer one about three weeks ago. But this intermittent problem has been going on for well over a year. Now the most recent development is that the lower right corner of the desktop says that my Windows is not genuine. The ONLY thing that is not OEM from Dell on this computer is my sound card. I installed a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi on it the day I got the computer.

I run CCleaner both for windows cache and registry cleaner on average once a week, and it is constantly active. I'm on my computer mostly for college but I also play a lot of games on Pogo. I'm not what you would consider a "gamer" utilizing other online platforms.

I'm running an i7 processor with 8GB ram. My Windows Experience Index rating is... Read more

Answer:shut off suddenly blinked twice and shut off for good

Are you perfectly sure that the adapter works fine? Have you tested another adapter on the two computers to ensure that culprit isn't the adapter itself?

I work on my Gateway while sitting on the couch. I surf the Internet and then watch TV. I surf a little more, and then I watch more TV. Some nights, when I slide the computer near me because I've shifted in my seat, the screen will go black and I have to push the On/Off switch until the computer shuts down. The computer, when the screen goes black, is still on, but no fingerpad strokes or combination of key stokes will turn the screen back on. Super frustrated about having to turn the computer off "the wrong way" a couple of nights a week. Any advice??? Thanks!

Since upgrading to Windows 10 Pro, I remain perplexed about this one issue that is plaguing my system:

Almost every shut down is reported in the Windows 10 Reliability Monitor as the computer was not shut down properly. This happens on both shut downs and restarts using the Start - Power options. The only time this appears not to happen is after a restart after installing updates.

I first saw this after an upgrade install over Windows 7 Pro. I then installed clean using a USB ISO and I ended up with the same thing. I then installed from a Microsoft original Windows 10 Pro DVD and again, ended up with the same thing.

This happens before I install any software at all, including antivirus. The system appears to run fine and there is no error message on the next boot to say that the system was not shut down properly. It is only apparent when checking the Reliability Monitor. It currently has so many failed shut down reports that it is tracking around 1 on the graph since day one.

I ran sfc /scannow and there are no integrity violations. My Device Manager shows no problems. Msconfig shows the system is set to Normal Boot.

I did not use the Mother board CD to install drivers as many of them are outdated and probably incompatible with Windows 10 anyway. I installed the most current drivers on the Asus website. I have the most current driver for my graphics card off the Nvidia website. Same with my Logitech G110 keyboard and R.A.T.5 mouse - the only other items plu... Read more

In the past week or so, when I play Rust or Sniper Elite V2(Haven't tried another game), I'll be playing just fine for a few minutes, but then my computer stops, restarts, and I get a black screen that says

"Windows did not shut down successfully. If this was due to your system not responding, or if the system was shut down to protect data, you might be able to recover by choosing one of the safe mode configurations from the menu below:
- Safe mode
- Safe mode with Networking
- Safe mode with Command prop
- Start windows normally"

I looked the problem up, I tried the F8 fix, it didn't do anything, I was told maybe the cables were loose, I checked them and all the cables are fine.

Hi,I have had this problem over the years. It seems that when I install new software or update windows through the microsofts site, something happens to the Windows XP configuration so when I try to shut down the computer with an Explorer window open, Windows will not shut down unless I manually close the Explorer window. It will shut down other applications but not Explorer. Is there a fix for this? I have tried to reload Windows to resolve this but Windows Explorer always seems to fail either by installing a program or after installing updates.

Answer:Windows XP won't shut down

I don't know the reason for this but there's a lot to be said for having MS "UPH Clean" onboard as this closes all programs that are hanging and speeds shutdown. See here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...Please come back and let us know the outcome.

I upgraded Windows 7 from Vista Home Premium a few weeks ago, and have had this problem ever since.

Whenever I try to shut down Windows 7, it tries to shut down for about 10-15 minutes, then goes to blue screen of death, then restarts. No data is lost when it boots up again (at least none that I know of), and most of the time if it does this, I simply hold down the power button to shut down instead. I want to shut down Windows the proper way and I know the method I've been using is damaging to the computer.

When it boots up after blue screen a notification pops up that states "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shut down", and I get these details:

One of our users has Windows XP running on his laptop. For about a week now he has been unable to shut down or log off of his computer. Ctrl-Alt-Del is not functioning, so I can't see if an app is running. There is nothing in the event log for this. When you go to Start -> Logoff or Shutdown, everything appears to work up until you select OK for the Restart, Shutdown, Log off, etc. Then the screen just flickers for a second and nothing else happens. I even tried forcing a shutdown from the command prompt using "shutdown -s -f"; same deal. Any one got any ideas?

Answer:Windows XP won't shut down

Sounds like it could be a possible virus playing in your files, id slave the hard drive to another computer and ran a scan, and if that doesnt work, copy the files to another harddrive and format with f-disk and reload winxp, that should be able to fix it, other then that your comp could have to many things in teh startup and it is just taking a long time to shut every program down

Hey Everyone,

I have a desktop that I ran the update on from windows 7 up to windows 10.
When I go to shutdown on this system it appears to begin the shutdown process. However, after a few moments with black screens and appearing to have shut down, the PC near turns off and shows the BIOS splash screen and begins to start windows up again.

I have tried various troubleshooting options on the internet though only resulting in
- a screen every time I "shut down" that tells me that there has been an error and that the computer must restart, even though I was shutting it down in the first place... It also tells me that there is an error named "apple.sys" possibly causing the problem. The computer then restarts fine every time after that point though the only possible way of me shutting the computer down is manually holding the shut down button on my pc case. Then once I power up after that my computer fails to give power to my keyboard and mouse, to which I must then reset the BIOS every single time and then restart. This is the only way I can turn my pc back on after every time I manually power down - resetting the BIOS to bring power to my accessories. I dont really want to keep doing this every single night and plus I figure it must be bad for my pc.

Any troubleshooting or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks (edit: have also tried turning Fast Startup off, with no such luck.)

Answer:Windows 10 will not shut down

Check your BIOS settings to see if it's set to restart when there is a power failure.
Also check in Device Manager for power management settings for devices and disable the wake functions.
Worst case, may need to clear CMOS settings or update BIOS. Note configuration beforehand.

has it been this way since you bought it?check the power settings, in both the win 7 and manufacturers power apps.when you say reinstalled, did you do that with the hidden partition -factory reset- or did you use a win 7 dvd?check also the bios power on/off settingstype reliability into the run box, see if there are messages about hung apps, etctype event into the run box and check events for any info on why its not shutting down.finally if its new, its still under warranty, so send it back. new things are suppossed to work correctly straight out the box.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

The Stand By option works, but Restart and Turn Off only show a busy signal for a moment and then nothing happens. I tried unstalling several programs that I installed before it started doing this, but it still won't turn off. What should I do?

Windows 98 went through the same thing. A patch cured it and should cure XP.

Hi all:

I'm one of those basically pc illiterates and I would really appreciate your help.

I downloaded spybot and that's when the trouble started, so I then removed it but in that process, when it told me there were important registry changes and asked me to reverse them.....I mistakenly clicked: "no".

After that, my pc will not shut down. I downloaded registry fix and that didn't fix it. I've run my avast virus scan and it identified Win32:Kuang2, which I understand is not a virus but simply a signature that is the same in another program?? I might not have that right.

I tried closing each program before trying to shut down but that doesn't work. I ran registry checker and system file checker and tried to figure out what's going on but I'm just too dense.

I really could use your help.

Thanks,

Trixy

Answer:Windows 98 SE will not shut down

I don't know what Kuang32 is, but as far as the registry issues I would reinstall spybot and then uninstall it again. If it asks the same questions about the registry changes, click yes this time. Don't know if that helps, but it's a start.
