File Open dialog and thumbnails ... Photoshop

Question: File Open dialog and thumbnails ... Photoshop

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi...

I'm an new user to Photoshop CS(Windows) ... I find that in the file browser (I'm looking at RAW images) ... SOME images do not have thumbnails desplayed ... only a generic ICON ... this is maybe 15% of the images...

.... if I select one of these images I can see it in the preview window, and I can open it into Photoshop (via the Camera Raw plug-in) ... but I can't see a thumbnail in the main browsing window ...

... this makes it very difficult to select images for further editing...

... if you know how to correct this problem, or know what the cause might be, please let me know.

Thanks, Peubear

How can I change the font in my Photoshop File Info dialog box? It is showing Curlz which is extremely hard to read. It wasn't always like this, so I don't know what I did to change it, but really want to change it back to something like helvetica. Thanks

Answer:Photoshop File Info Dialog box

It's probably nothing to do with Photoshop, specifically. More likely it's caused by a (Windows) theme. What O/S and version are you using?

Hi.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
Intel i5 CPU @2.67 GHz
8 GB RAM

This problem just started recently or I only noticed it in the past week or so. When I'm in any application that launches the File Open dialog, including any browser's "Select File/Browse" button to choose a local file, when I select a file (even a small 1K file) from the dialog and the dialog closes, there is a 5 - 10 second delay before the app responds and either opens the file or in the case of a browser, displays the file name. In those 5-10 seconds, the app is non-responsive. In a browser, other fields on the form cannot be clicked or selected for the 5-10 second period -- then the selected filename appears on the form.

This happens in all 4 browsers I tried: Chrome 32, IE 11, Firefox 26, and Safari.

I also booted Windows in safe mode and the problem still occurred.

I also ran KingSoft Office Writer and selected File->Open and the same issue occurs after selecting the file -- there is a noticeable delay that wasn't previously there.

In a code editor (PSPad), opening a file does the same thing as well (hangs for several seconds after selecting the file).

Randomly during testing, (but probably < ~5% of the time) it doesn't delay and works properly.

I ran System File Checker and MS Security Essentials, but both turned up a clean machine.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this lately?

Thanks,
Vinnie

I have searched up and down and around the web for a fix for this with no luck.
Hope I am posting this in the correct place..

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the
mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire
application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs.
It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.

Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.)

I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

If I need to post more info please just let me know.
Thanks so much.
Appreciate the help...

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Answer:No thumbnails in open/save file

Welcome to Seven Forums Cath.

First of all I don't understand how you are opening a folder with a browser?
Press the windows logo key + Pause Break to open System Properties and follow the diagram below to "For Cath" and check "Show Thumbnails Instead of Icons".

Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

This may help too: Icon Cache - Rebuild

and

Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset
You may need to do a repair install since sfc /scannow won't run.

Since I cleaned the malware from my system, whenever I try to upload or download a file to (or from) my website, the "File Open" dialog is set to "list" display mode by default and I have to change it every time. Also, previously all the names would be sorted alphabetically but now I have to click on the "name" tab each time.
How can I chnge these defaults back?

Recently, on my computer running Win2K, ALL my apps now display files in random (or possibly date) order, not alphabetical order in the Open dialog box! Could something have gotten corrupted? A clobbered DLL? A registry error? How can this problem be fixed? Clearly, an alphabetical display is the most useful for opening a file.

In the past when I encountered this problem under Win98, I was given the following fix:

- Right-click the Start button, click Explore , and then click drive C:.

- On the View menu, click Details .

- Click the Name column to sort items by name, then click View > Folder Options > View > Like Current Folder > OK

- Now press and hold down the CTRL key, and then quit Windows Explorer by clicking Close in the File Menu.

- Release the CTRL key.

- Restart the computer.

This fixed the problem in Win98 but his method DOES NOT WORK under Win2k. I tried it (finding FOLDER OPTIONS under Tools) to no avail.

Does anyone have another suggestion?

For some reason my Open File dialogs (in any program) appear to be randomly sorted. When I right click in the pane and open the Arrange Icons By menu, nothing is checked. If I set it there, it's gone again when I open another Open File dialog.

Is there some place I can fix this? Running XP Pro btw.

How do I get the open file dialog to set the file extention filter for image files only, get the user to select one or multiple image files, then save these as in an array variable to display later in the document.

Hi, I wonder if any of you fab tech people can help me please.

I have searched and searched many sites (including here of course) on and off over the past year for help with this annoying little issue and I finally succumbed to posting a request for help!

When I open a file from an application that uses the standard XP File Open dialog, the default view is "List" and is sorted by filename.

Like this:

I would like the default view to be "Detailed" and sorted by descending date.

Is this possible and if so, how can I do it?? I have tried changing the view and when I reopen the dialog it has reset to "View" again :(

I would be very grateful for any help, even if it's just to point me in the right direction :)

I use WinXP Pro SP2 with all latest updates.

Many thanks.

I recently bought a small 11" laptop to use remotely when I'm out of pocket. It doesn't have a hard drive, only 32gb of flash memory. That's ok, but I really want to minimize what I transfer to the memory. But hey, it's 2016 and we have the cloud, right? So on my main laptop I have the Google Drive app installed, and it automatically places a copy of everything in my local Google Drive file on the Google cloud drive. For my tiny no-HD laptop, I'd rather access files on the cloud and not create another copy of all the files on this laptop. I noticed in apps when I File-Open, the dialog has local files, a tab for Network files, and even a tab for OneDrive. But no generic cloud files or a specific Google Drive entry.

Is it possible to add Google Drive to that dialog, or in some other easy way access cloud files that are NOT on OneDrive. I can't really install Google Drive desktop since it will create copies of all the files and I don't have room for that.

Hi All,
Since new in Windows 7, whenever I have an Open File dialog box and I start typing into the filename field, it displays all possible filenames that match what I've typed so far.
Now this function is gone, I must have unknowingly changed some setting (or maybe updates did). How do I get it back?

Note: I'm not talking about "recent files" with the arrow button to drop them down; but matching filenames that drop down automatically.
For instance, in an Open File dialog box (any program - not just MS) if say I start typing P files drop down:
PA1
PA2
PA3
PB1
PB2
PB3
etc.
If I continue typing B then only the PB files are left, drop down list is now only
PB1
PB2
PB3

Thanks in anticipation,
Rob

hello all, newbie here being driven to distraction by a fault that has manifested itself with the Open/save/Common dialog box.

In all programs I use - Chrome/IE11 and OpenOffice. when I wish to open or save a file the dialog box is does the following:

opens BUT without "save as file type" OR without the Explorer Tree. It seems to open a random storage file within C. The lack of either the file tree or the file type/location field makes it impossible to speficy where to save the file to. In 'open' it makes it impossible to find the file for emailing and because it opens random folders saving the file into that file is not an option.

any ideas? As a business and work tool without this function working the laptop is essentially useless.

I often attach files to outlook which are hosted on network drives. I typically like to add a UNC instead of the old-fashioned drive letter.

When I go to the attach or insert file dialog, I want to quickly navigate to one of several preferred server directories.

Is there any way I can add one of these directories to the left side of the dialog so that I can click on it directly? (I tried dragging the folder icon but that doesn't work.)

I've googled and not found any solution so far. (This is somewhat trivial in both Dolphin and Nautilus.)

Okay im a noob when it comes to VBscript, but here is what i need:

i need a .vbs that can open a dialog box to select a file (or multiple files) and return the path and filename to "GetFilename".

This is what i have tried:
Code:

WScript.Echo BrowseFile( "C:\", "TempImage files (*.img)|*.img" )
' WScript.Echo "Selected file: " & GetFileName( "", "Text files|*.txt" )
' WScript.Echo "Selected file: " & GetFileName( "", "MS Office documents|*.doc;*.xls;*.pps" )
' WScript.Echo "Selected file: " & GetFileName( "C:\WINDOWS", "Bitmaps|*.bmp" )

Function BrowseFile( myDir, myFilter )
' This function opens a File Open Dialog and returns the
' fully qualified path of the selected file as a string.
'
' Arguments:
' myDir is the initial directory; if no directory is
' specified "My Documents" is used;
' NOTE: this default requires the WScript.Shell
' object, and works only in WSH, not in HTAs!
' myFilter is the file type filter; format "File type description|*.ext"
' ALL arguments MUST get A value (use "" for defaults), OR otherwise you must
' use "On Error Resume Next" to prevent error messages.
'
' Dependencies:
' Requires NUSRMGRLib (nusrmgr.cpl), available in Windows XP and later.
' To use the default "My Documents" WScript.Shell is used, which isn't
' available in HTAs.

EDIT: It's all fixed nowHey everybody! I seem to be having a minor problem with my open file dialog. When I go to open a file with programs such as Winamp and IE, the files and folders are completely out of order. They were all in alphabetical order, but recently they seem to be in the date modified order. On the other hand, when I browse through my files using the My Computer approach, everything is just fine. So, I'm trying to figure out how to have the Open File dialog place my files in alphabetical order by default, since it is annoying to have to sort everytime I go into a new folder. I am using Windows XP Home Edition, I don't have any viruses, spyware or anything like that. I've tried looking through all of the folder options I can find, but I can't find anything related to my problem. I'm still trying to figure it out, and any suggestions/advice would be great. Thanks!

How do I disable the preview pane in a file open dialog (it seems to be the standard W7 open dialog with enabled preview)?

In Windows Explorer there are a button to turn it on/off, but not in a open dialog.
There doesn't seem to be any option to turn it off anywhere and Alt+P apparently doesn't.

I know it is possible as I found it by chance several months ago, but I've managed to to forget how.

I can't understand how they would add a preview pane without an obvious way to get rid of it (i.e same button as in explorer).

I've tried searching the forums, but I've only managed to find threads related to Windows Explorer, not the open dialog, and they seem to be different in behavior.

Answer:Disable preview in file open dialog.. how??

When you refer to the open dialog are you talking about when you attempt to open a file that has no default program? If so, you can just set a default program to use, and clicking the open button or double clicking it will open the file in that program. You can still open the file in an alternative program by using the drop-down menu of the open button or using open with...

If you're talking about the open dialog from within a program such as Paint, you can close the preview pane via a button on the top right of the open dialog.

I am in desperate need of assistance and guidance. I have good reason to believe I have a virus or that I have been hacked in some way.

Some Symptoms:
1. WiFi is set to off, but comes on automatically
2. Once WiFi comes on, it brings up the dialog box to open a file
3. My open brower (Firefox) also closes automatically
4. In IE I get a dialog box that pops up asking me to enter a term to search for a file.

I am running a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit on a new computer. There seems to be a flaw in Windows 8.1 that randomly flares up when interacting with a "Save As" or "Open" file dialog. Most of the time it works fine, sometimes with a delay, and other times it just hangs the application. Windows is still running and I can do other things except do any file dialog in any application.

Furthermore, I try to kill the process in task manager and I get the message that I don't have permissions to kill the process. I am logged in as administrator. Running task manager as administrator does no good. Trying to restart the computer also does no good as Windows will hang on "Restarting". The only option at that point is the crash the entire system by powering off. Once powered on it seems to work just fine.

I do have mapped network drives but they all show "green" on Explorer. I've seen others having a similar problem, so I'd have to think this is a serious bug in Windows.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

Thanks

Dale

Answer:Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit save as or open file dialog freezes

I had Outlook hang trying to save an email attachment. Could not kill the process and received message "Error terminating process. Access denied.". While this was happening, I tried to save a file in Adobe Acrobat only to have it hang as well. It would appear that once one app hangs any other app trying to bring up the file dialog will hang.

I had only 2 mapped network drives and both were showing "green". Just experimenting, I removed the 2 network mapped drives while the app was hanging. After about 15 seconds, the apps freed up and the "Save Attachment" dialog popped up on both hung apps.

Now I consider this to be a bug. But to get Microsoft to admit that will be a herculaneum effort. This behavior did not happen on Windows 7. Does anyone know of a setting that can be changed to prevent Windows from trying to open every drive I have attached to the computer every time I open or save a file?

Ideally this is a registry entry I could update to switch over new default locations, this can happen up to 10 times a day. Please do not suggest adding the locations to favorites, as that tree navigation is the worst thing ever.

Hello,

A friend just showed me a weird problem he is having with his computer. He has a folder under My Documents, in which he keeps his work files. He emails these files using Gmail, which he accesses via Internet Explorer.

All worked fine until a few days ago, when he noticed that when he clicked the link in Gmail to attach a file, his folder wasn't listed in the Open File dialog. He looked in Windows Explorer, and could see the folder OK. I tried opening Word and using the Open File dialog there, and the folder wasn't visible.

If he clicks in the address bar, and adds the folder name to the path, it opens the folder, but shows it as empty. I actually has two subfolders. If he adds the name of a subfolder, then the Open File dialog shows the files in that folder.

I checked the permissions on the folder, and couldn't see anything odd. What I don't understand is how the folder can be visible in Windows Explorer, and not in the Open File dialog.

Anyone any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Folder appears in Windows Explorer, but not in the Open File dialog

Rightclick on the folder where you can actually find it in Explorer, look at the path. That is where it now resides.

If it cannot be found there when browsing in from Computer>C then I'd back up the files in it to a new folder you temporarily create in C root, delete the problem file and recreate it.

A friend just showed me a weird problem he is having with his computer. He is using Windows 7 pro, and has a folder under My Documents, in which he keeps his work files.

I tried opening Word and using the Open
File dialog there, and the folder wasn't visible.

Thanks

I upgraded from Win 7 so do not know if the places bar (on side of box) was present in Win 8. Having the places bar was very handy for me in Win 7. I had customized the menu to list my most used folders. The Win 10 dialogue box presents you with a tree on the left side making you drill down to your folders each time. I would appreciate any work arounds, customization tips or links to articles that address this issue, including 3rd party apps.

Thanks...

Hi,

On my laptop I have an SD card slot. Whenever an SD card is in, a removable storage device shows up in "Computer" in Explorer. When I open up "Computer" through the start menu, the icon for the drive as expected (the standard SD card icon), but if I navigate to "Computer" in a File Open dialog (e.g. in Firefox, File->Open File...), the icon is missing. The drive is there, but the icon is one of those generic missing-icon icons. I've attached a screen shot.

This is a relatively new build (Vista Business x64), and I've noticed it from day one.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

Answer:Vista SD Card Icon in File Open Dialog Missing

Any thoughts on this?

I've deleted my icon cache, and there was no change.

I've also tried to change the icon for a drive using the registry, as explained in a few tutorials and posts on this site, and that hasn't worked either. In fact, I can't even change the icon that appears in "My Computer" for the SD Card drive, let alone in the File Open Dialog.

For completeness, attached is the proper icon being displayed in My Computer.

In windows 7 there was this feature I loved when you needed to open a file in a program via standard "File -> Open" dialog and if you had the folder with that file already opened in windows exlorer then you would just click that explorer window and your Open File dialog window would instantly display that folder.Afer upgrading to win8 i lost this function and really want it back.just a detailed process because I know it's hard to understand if you never experienced it:1) You have pressed File->Open in some program and Open File Dialog showing you some random folder.2) You have Target_Folder opened in windows explorer3) You click on the windows explorer window4) Open File Dialog automatically switches to that folder and you can just pick your file there without navigating for 2 minutes.

Answer:How to make Open File Dialog to show the folder opened in explorer

I don't think that what you are describing is a feature of Windows 7. I cannot duplicate it on any of my Windows 7 machines or VMs.1. I had a Windows Explorer Window open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET2. I used notepad and used File->Open. The Open File Dialog started in my Documents folder.3. Clicking the existing Explorer Window that was open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET did not change the Open File Dialog to point at that location.I tried a few different programs (Wordpad, notepad, Paint, and Microsoft Word) and I wasn't able to get the behaviour you described. The feature may have been coming from an add-on program of some sort, or may be specific to programs that you use (and those programs may not support the feature in win8+).

I can't be the only person who's noticed this difference, but I've searched everywhere and can't find anything on this... perhaps I'm just using the wrong words. Anyway...

Lets say I have a word document named "Messager Manual" that i want to open.

Windows 7 scenario: with Word 2007 open, I click the home button and click Open. I browse to the location of my documents, and I type "messager" into the File Name field. I'm met with an error window which says...
Windows XP scenario: with Word 2007, I click the home button and click Open. I browse to the location of my documents, and i type "messager" into the File Name field. The entire contents of the folder are searched and then filtered down to only contain all file names which contain what is placed in the File Name field.

Does anyone know why they changed this functionality and if there's a place to edit these settings?

I do realize that I could use the new file explorer to accomplish this, but it seems silly to me that they would add in this functionality in one area, only to remove it from another.

Thanks,

Chocko

Answer:Open dialog box settings? File Name field no longer filters contents

This function did not change from Office 2007 to Office 2010 for XP, Vista and Win 7.
It is the same - it searches folder and gives files with such word in names.

I just double-checked with Office 2010 in Win 7, Office 2007 in XP and Office 2007 in Vista.

The above mentioned window appears only when you start typing part of a file name and click ENTER (which in this window is linked to button Open)

Hi,

is there a way to access the favorite folders which are specified in windows explorer (NOT internet explorer) from the "open file" dialog in all programs?

example:
I am working in program XY - now I click file>open and I am presented with this mini explorer version which allows me to browse to the file which i want to open. - oftne it starts by default somewhere in the my documents folder.
how can i get FAST to files which are hidden very deep down in the filestructure without browsing through all the folders and not having to clich through the whole filestructure every time i open a file?
the solution should be program independent - i know that some programs remeber the last location or allow to specify a default folder... this is not what i am looking for.
i am looking for a solution which works in all (or at least in most : ) programs.
any ideas? if there is no native solution i would also consider to use some sort of shell addon / program or whatever ; )

thanks

I find that adding a link to the folder that the file is in under Favorites in the navigation pane helps make it easier and quicker to get to.

Favorites - Links - Add or Remove in Navigation Pane

I have a user who has been using Word 2010 for a couple of weeks with no issues until this morning where she is no longer able to open word documents using either File-Open, Open on the quick access toolbar or CTRL O.

At present if you go to the file tab and select open - it goes back to the home tab but does not display the open file dialog box.

You can select an item from the recent file list and this will open, you can select a file in windows explorer and double click and it will open so the association is OK. But I cannot get the open dialog to appear in word.

Excel and other office programs are working fine it is only Word.

The user is using Windows 7, Microsoft office 2010 standard.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Office software but the problem has persisted.

I have been unable to 'google' my way through this one, so hopefully someone here can suggest a solution.

Hi,

My PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes.

On my Dell Inspiron, there are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives' icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

I'm running Vista x64 Home Premium.

Has anyone else encounter this problem? Does anyone have a solution for fixing these missing icons?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, I was trying to save an image from the internet and my fingers slipped on a key. Since then every time the save-as box opens, where the files should show, it is just grey. I will attach a picture to show the issue. Could someone please assist me in getting back the thumbnails which should show where the grey bit is.

Thanks

Answer:Save-as Dialog Box not showing any thumbnails

Usually you can simply hide or show the folders from the link at bottom left in Save As dialog:

In your case though I am not sure if this is the case because although your folders are hidden, the dialog in your screenshot is showing the Hide folders link when it should show Show folders.

I have ASUS Windows 7 x32bit and I have tried everything on the internet, every time that I try to open a .exe file it will open the "open with" dialog box instead. I have already established that I have not got a virus because what happened was I stupidly selected adobe accidentally when it didn't know what to open the file with and I didn't even say to do it always with this type of file but it did it for them all anyway, so I followed advice of uninstalling adobe and that has gotten me to just a blank icon for every single .exe file because it doesn't know what to open the file with and displays the "open with" dialog box.
Please help I need this computer and this Profile.

Adobe creative suite 2 with photoshop and illustrator just arrived yesterday but I have had the most annoying problem - when trying to save or open a file, if I press on the buttons to the left (see picture) which are the locations of where the file would be - my computer, my documents etc. the program freezes with a "not responding" message. clicking on the + or - folder things to the right sometimes works, but other times it also freezes it giving the not responding message. I have to close the program using CTRL+ALT+DEL. I am not sure what to do since I dont want to start working on something knowing that it may freeze and I lose everything.

I have 3 HP computers, all W-XP home, and loaded with Photoshop and Irfanview.
When I browse a folder in XP, in the Thumbnail mode, – I have no thumbnail displays for my psd files.
To see the psd thumbs, I have to use the Irfanview thumbnail browser.

Yesterday, I was helping friend fix his older Dell computer and noticed that his W-XP will display his Photoshop psd thumbnails in the XP folder browser. He also has Irfanview set as his default Viewer.

I didn’t have time to try to find out why his computer will display the psd thumbs – and mine won’t,
and I'm not sure I would have known where to look.
Until now - I didn't know this was possible.

Anyone know how to turn this XP thumbnail function on, for the psd file types ??

Answer:Solved: Photoshop psd Thumbnails in W-XP

Thumbnail support for Windows was disabled in CS onwards by Adobe because some users found that their files were being damaged or lost. If you had PS 7 or below installed previously then the psicon.dll (that handled PSD thumbs preview in windows) will still be on the system, hence the ability to see PSD thumbnails.

Adobe has Bridge now to handle PSD & other files - I, personally, don't use it as it's a huge resource hog.

Irfanview can only see the Thumbnails of PSD files if the 'maximise compatibilty' option is checked in PS preferences (on by default), which saves a flattened composite of the image that most image viewers can see.

If you really want the thumbnails back (with the possibility of losing some of your files), then this page has information on where to get the psicon.dll file and how to get XP to load it.

The problem:

I right-click any shortcut icon on the desktop, choose "open file location" from the context menu, and receive an error dialog from windows explorer:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

The error also happens if I choose "properties" from the shortcut's context menu, then click the "open file location" button on the properties window.

After dismissing the error dialog, I get a "blue swirly busy" for about 10 seconds, and If I click "cancel" on the properties windows it won't close until that 10 seconds is elapsed. During that timeout the desktop is busy, meaning I can't right-click the desktop
and get the context, launch a desktop shortcut or move an icon, but the taskbar and quick-launch stuff works fine. This doesn't seem to take much in the way of cpu cycles, and the machine stays responsive otherwise.

The error happens on any shortcut, in any folder, whether or not is is on the desktop. Usually, however, if the shortcut is in a non-desktop folder, the error does not occur from the shortcut context menu but still occurs from the shortcuts propery window.

What I've done so far:

Users are administrators.
The error happens in SAFE MODE with no networking.
The error occurs when logged on as a different user.

Answer:Open File Location fails from any shortcut context menu giving a program association error dialog. Win 7 Pro x64.

OK! Found it! Fixed it.
The problem turned out to be one simple item in the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell" key definition within the Folder progid.

The bad entry had a default value of "none" set for the Folder\shell key, and a working entry has either an empty (unset) default value or a null string default value. All of the other keys and values under the "Folder" progid remain the same and work correctly.
I have proven the problem by setting and testing that default value back and forth. It's repeatable.
It makes sense (now), knowing that the OpenContainingFolder ShellEx context menu extension class launches a new Explorer window via the Folder progid.

BAD...
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell]
@="none"

GOOD...
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell]

Chances are that I will never knlow exactly how this got changed, but should it happen again, I'm prepared.

I thank all who replied and suggested fixes. The suggested fixes led me to the correct area(s) of the registry to examine. I've learned a ton of stuff about how shell extensions are installed, programmed, and a bit about how to troubleshoot them. It would be
nice to claim elegant troubleshooting methods, but it's not true - it was just looking, testing and poking until finally stumbled upon.

Huh, what's going on here.
My computer lets me browse the network just fine and even sees everything there is to see. However, when I want to say, mount a DVD from a networked computer for example, the Network icon is nowhere to be found on the Open File or Folder dialog window.

Going back to the root level (from the path bar in the very same window) lets me see all the usual stuff: drives, homegroup and such but once again, no network.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find any solution to this and it seems like a very silly thing to remove from the OS.

I hope it's just me being blind and I really appreciate any information you guys can share on this subject.

I use a program called Mudlet (version 2.1) in order to play a MUD. That program has some interactions with the Windows file API, the details of which I do not know. What I do know is that the authors of the program have stated explicitly that Mudlet does NOT save the last file location it was at. As such, its default behavior, when opening the "File Open" dialog is to go to its own root directory.

However, on my Laptop, this is not how it behaves. My Desktop, on the other hand, behaves as expected. I can open up he file dialog and it will always start in the same root directory. On my Laptop, it will open up to the last place I opened a file from in Mudlet. They both run Windows 8.1, so I'm not sure what the difference is. I would like for my Desktop to mimic the Laptop in its behavior as it's by far more convenient, but, without knowing what's different or what setting I might have accidentally changed, there's little I can do.

Thoughts?

Answer:How to set Default "File Open Dialog" to Last Location

You might try this: Create a shortcut to a "placeholder" file [which stays there, undisturbed] in your desired folder. Within that shortcut properties: add the desired folder path in the Start In blank. Add the path/filename of Mudlet's EXE to the left of the placeholder file. Every time you click that icon, Mudlet automatically will go there. Example: "path/EXE" "path/placeholder file"
But, before you do all that: simply add the desired folder path in the Start In blank within Mudlet's icon. That just might be all you need to do.

However, the above dialog opens during startup every time. It never includes the top section naming the problem file (see attached screen shot of the normal dialog).

1. Is this a bug? Is there a fix for it?
2. If not a bug, how can I track down the problem file?

Edit: I just added a screen of my PC

Hi Nordel, welcome to the Ten Forums.

The bottom of the dialog shows your PC is trying to open a Flash video file (.flv extension). Does selecting MPC-HC and then ticking the box Always use this app to open .flv files solve the issue? At least it should show you what is the video the PC wants to run every time you start it.

Recently upgraded a Windows 7 PC to Windows 10.

Since upgrading, I get random Windows dialog boxes asking "How do you want to open this file?" Usually happens while using Chrome or IE, but I can't say for sure it hasn't popped up while not surfing.

Below the open file question, it lists several program choices such as Adobe, Google, IE, etc. Oddly enough, it doesn't show the name of the file it's wanting to open.

Fearing it may be malware, I have only tried selecting Notepad, which gives a message "Cannot find the C:\Program.txt file. Do you want to create a new file?" So I click "Cancel."

Any ideas or suggestions for what this may be and how to resolve?

Thanks.

Hi

We have a site which contains a csv export file. We know this site works fine - it does for all other users and has done for ages. When you click the link, you get the usual 'open' or 'save' dialog box. However we have one user, who receives an error when clicking on 'open'. (see attached image). Microsft Excel has already loaded up in the background.
It may be worth mentioning that this is on an https site.

Hello and thank you for looking at my thread today. The recent passing of my father left me in charge of the arrangements.I have been going through hundreds of photo's to make a life story video, using Windows Movie Maker. My question is: Can I set the default , when opening files that are pictures, to thumbnails instead of the $#%%@ list all the time?It gets really tedious when I have to continually change the setting to thumbs everytime I want to import a new photo.

Answer:Open thumbnails as default?

If you have not done this already, open the C: drive and click on the top menu Tools-Folder Options-View scroll down and ensure that 'Remember each folder's view settings is checked, apply and come out. That should be all you need to do once you have optioned for thumbnails, but if not, there is this page from Microsoft which may helphttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/812003

Answer:Thumbnails will not open online

Hi,

I will suggest you to run Windows Updates first and then I suggest updating Flash Player from the site: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP

If the issue still persists, try another browser like chrome, Firefox etc. and check if the issue occurs on this browser or not.

Hey everyone, check this out. I found an excellent application at http://www.winplosion.com which shows thumbnails of all open applications ...

Answer:thumbnails of all open applications ...

Looks like overkill to me. You can do "basically" the same thing by pressing "Alt + Tab".

Why would you want to pay for a program to do that?

Hey all!

I just wonder, is there a way to actually change all four (4) file attributes from the file properties dialog of a file?

This was possible with Windows 95! Imagine that! Windows 95!...

But it's not possible with Windows 98!
It's not possible with Windows Me (Mistake Edition, *cough*)!
It's not possible with Windows 2000!
It's not possible with Windows XP!
It's not possible with Windows Vista!
And it's not possible with Windows 7!

Why would you want to use the attrib command to change file attributes? Because that's the only thing I know of that allows setting all four attributes. The four attributes being the Read-only, Hidden, Archive, and System.

Is there by any chance a way to add these attribute options to the file properties dialog?...

Answer:How do you change file attributes from the file properties dialog?

You can see on samples below how the file properties dialog may look like on different Windows versions.

Windows 95
Source: http://www.web-friend.com/help/win9x/95help8.html

Windows 98
Source: http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21302
Windows XP
Source: http://www.anti-forensics.com/disable-the-lastaccess-timestamp-in-windows-xp

Windows Vista
Source: http://www.nicholasoverstreet.com/2010/03/windows-7-annoyance-file-properties/

Windows 7
Source: http://www.nicholasoverstreet.com/2010/03/windows-7-annoyance-file-properties/

The dialog may look the same in Windows Vista and Windows 7, but they behave a little bit differently. As you can see from the lower most image, the the time stamps are displayed as "X hours ago" instead of actual time it was created, modified or accessed. It will display time normally as with all previous Windows versions only after 24 hours have passed. I don't like this, but as far as I know it's the only change they have done to the file properties dialog in Windows 7.

Question: Open dialog box

When I click on some icons on the desktop I get this dialog appear:

This is annoying, so is there any way of getting it to run the program without this? So far Google Chrome and Team Fortress 2 do this.

Answer:Open dialog box

Hi Nick,

Not sure if this is the one you get with exe's downloaded with firefox - if so right click on the exe and click on the Unblock button at the bottom right.

I always do this now when downloading things and it works well if you unblock the installer or Zip file straight after download

Going directing to the folder I can access the downloaded file. However, although I used to be able to, I cannot access it by clicking the 'Open folder' button. "Open With" dialog box with IE.

When I click in my short-cut icon(s) on the desktop to launch my web site(s) I get the dialog box which reads "Choose the program you want to use to open this file". When I then select Internet Explorer and tick the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and click OK I get to my destination.

But when I repeat the process of clicking the icon(s) for my site(s) I go through the same process again and again.

It all happened when trying out Safari browser now uninstalled. The icon clicking worked properly with Safari but would not go back to working OK with IE.

Any ideas?

When I tried to back up my "My Pictures" directory on my Dell Dimension 3000 Win XP Pro machine, all of the create dates on the jpgs changed to the current date, thumbnails disappeared, no preview in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and jpg files will not open in Photoeditor or Paint. When I tried to copy, I tried to click and drag the entire "My Pictures" directory. I was prompted that some information may be lost, but I clicked yes to proceed. All of the jpg files still are listed in the directory with their original name and files sizes intact. The only change is the create date and the inability to view or open the files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:jpgs won't open, no thumbnails and no preview

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fix.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fix.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.

I can open the photos in paintshop or any other programme I have once I am in that programme, but I am unable to open it straight from thumbnails. Says it cant find windib.exe which it needs to open it.

Answer:Cannot open thumbnails from folders.windib.exe

All I can suggest is run system file checker from command prompt in case it's a missing/corrupt system file: type sfc /scannow (note space). It'll read from os disc and replace as required.

hello!

there is something really really annoying

when you have opened a dialog window where you browse and open files, if in that window you right click and open a .doc file, the whole system freezes (sometimes it says it refuses to open the file because a window like the above is opened)

is there a fix for this?

thanks!

Answer:dialog window and open doc

what do you mean "dialog window"? like when you go from a program and goto File -> open? If so, does it matter from which program you open the dialogue box?
can you post a screenshot?

What OS are you using?

What program do you use to open doc files? office 2007 2010? openoffice?

Question: Open Dialog issue

Hi,

Something wrong, on Open Dialog, Windows used to pull all shortcut on the Desktop and an important one which was "My Computer" that would help me have access my different drives.

The way the open dialog is designed I have no possibility to access C, D, etc...

Any idea on how to fix this?

Thanks.

Answer:Open Dialog issue

Hello xxx59712, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What did you open this one from?

If this has just recently happened, then you could do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this started to fix it.

If that is not an option, then you could try running a sfc /scannow command to see if it may help if it's a corrupted or modified system file at fault.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

How could I accomplish this? Here's a visual example:Attachment 195994
What I want to do is place any sort of link (like the downloads icon) on the side where I've put a square on, because I'd like to just have the downloads right there. How could I do it?

Answer:How to add a link to the 'open' dialog

According to Brinks tutorial here: Common File Dialog Box - Customize Places Bar you can only place 1 to 5 links on the left, you can change them, but if you want the original 5 plus the one you want, you will need a third-party app.

His link, and others are here: Custom side and history in Open and Save Dialogs

You would have to use option two in the above tutorial or the third-party apps because group policy editor is not available in our editions of 7, Home Premium or lower.

I have had this issue for a long while, but finally am fed up with it. Hours of searching haven't yielded much...

So, say I have a file type that isn't assigned to anything (or even if it is and I choose "open with") for this story we will use ".XYZ" which may or may not be a real extension.

I double click this file, as expected the "Open with..." dialog box comes up. I can choose any program in the list and it will open with that program. I can even choose to always open files of that type with that program with the checkbox. However, I cannot add a program to my list! I click "Browse", find my EXE file, hit ok, and it does not get added to the list. I have also tried adding programs via the "File Types" tab in the view options, but it uses the same dialog box, and thus it still doesn't work.

I have no clue what caused this, but I know it has been this way for a long, long time. I just have never been annoyed enough to find an answer.

Now I recently updated Flash to Flash CS4, and I cannot tell .fla files to open with flash. I know I could manually add it in the registry to that extension, but I need to know why I can't through "Open with...".

Thank you for any help you can give me!

-WACOMalt

P.S. I can't wait for windows 7, the beta version got me very excited for it!
