External hard drive unresponsive when wake from sleep

Question: External hard drive unresponsive when wake from sleep

If I'm running utorrent when I put my W7 pc to sleep, after it wakes my external hardrive will become completely unresponsive. Usb hardrive at this point will not eject properly so I have to either unplug it unsafely or reboot PC to regain control of drive. If I remember to shut off Utorrent before I put PC to sleep, PC will wake fine with ex. hardrive working fine. Anyone know a fix for this so I can avoid having to turn Utorrent off first before I put my PC to sleep?

Preferred Solution: External hard drive unresponsive when wake from sleep

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

I have a External Seagate 2 Tb hard drive that after a while, will disconnect and I can't wake it by trying to access the drive in Explorer. I tried rebooting my computer but it doesn't show up anymore. The only solution it seems is to disconnect the drive and plug it back in.

Any advices?

I am on Windows 10

Hi,

I'm running Windows 10 on an old Phenom II machine that I've been using for years. I never had problems with it on 7 or 8.1 but am having plenty since I upgraded to 10.

My biggest issue is the computer becoming nonresponsive and only working again after a forced restart. This only seems to happen after the displays have gone to sleep. For example, today and yesterday I was playing music while doing schoolwork at home. The displays went to sleep and the audio was fine for ~20 minutes until it bugged out and was stuck in an repeating audio loop. I tried to wake up the displays, but the keyboard and mouse were nonresponsive - couldn't even turn on/off numlock lights, etc.

I've uploaded a log but I don't know where to begin. I removed my soundcard and the problem still occurs so that isn't it. All event logger says that I can find is "unexpected shutdown."

Any help is very much appreciated... I keep on losing work when I walk away from my computer and it hangs.

I have a desktop PC with Core i3 and 4GB RAM.

I have Logitech G400 mouse. Recently it has started acting extremely odd on startup or when the pc is woken up from sleep. The mouse will not respond for a period of 30 seconds to 5 minutes each time. The optical red sensor is turned on but the cursor just won't move and I have to wait till it decided to respond.

Any suggestions on how to solve this.

Answer:Mouse is unresponsive for few minutes on Startup or Wake from Sleep

Forgive the obvious questions:
1. is your touchpad responsive during this period?
2. what happens if you use a more basic wired mouse?

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

Quick update. It wakes up eventually if you leave the machine for about 40 seconds.

While I am pretty certain this has been posted repeatedly, I'm honestly at my wit's end. Asus Essentio CG5750, i5, Logitech G500 mouse, LG screen. System has run pretty much without any problems until I put it into sleep mode. I've tried hard reboot - no response to either screen or mouse. Keyboard functions just fine. I tried using my system repair disc and it won't even respond to that.

Does anyone have any ideas or is this going to be a matter of take it to a shop and hope for the best?

Answer:Windows 10 Sleep problem, screen won't wake up and mouse unresponsive

In Device Manager, check your mouse and keyboard and ensure the box to enable these to wake your PC is checked. Also check your BIOS is up to date.

I'm using a Seagate model ST3300601U2RK external hard drive with Windows XP.  All in all the thing works pretty well except that after about thirty seconds after turning on, it goes to sleep on me.  The light stays on, but the hardware's internal activity stops.  Even if I'm looking at a folder or working on a file located on the drive, it will go to sleep after a while.I can get it turn turn back on again by opening a folder or file I hadn't yet accessed, but I have to wait about 10 seconds for it to start running again.  Since I'm moving back and forth a lot between programs and source files, it really starts to make things drag on.  Is there any way of turning this sleep feature off?Just for your information, I've looked at Seagate's website and looked through all their supplemental info on the hard drive in question and nothing goes into specifics beyond increasing "efficiency".  Most of what they have are basically just pamphlets.  I've also thoroughly searched this site for the last couple of days trying to find anything regarding the subject, but I've come up with nothing.  I've also tried exploring the disk manager in the Computer Management utility, but I can't find any options or tools to change on the device except changing its associated drive letter or formatting it altogether.Any ideas?

I have a Windows 10 laptop with a couple external hard drives connected to it. I disconnect the hard drive and put it to sleep and take it to work. After coming home I reconnect them. I can hear the sound effects of connecting and disconnecting, but they never show up in my computer, not even in disk management.

I can see them in device manager. Universal Serial Bus controllers -> USB mass storage device, with a yellow exclamation mark. I checked and the error message is :

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

This can be fixed by restarting the computer and I googled for a solution to no avail. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.

So if anyone knows how to fix this, please tell me so I don't have to restart computer all the time, thank you.

Answer:External hard drive not showing up after sleep and disconnect (Code 38

You could try enabling automount and rebooting, which will bring this volume online and keep it online through subsequent reboots. Enabling automount can be done by opening a Command Prompt window and invoking DISKPART -> automount enable -> exit

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and have kept up with all Updates and latest drivers. I am having a problem with a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus External Hard Drive connected to the USB port of my Asus Sabertooth motherboard. After waking up the system after sleep, the external drive vanishes from the PC. Web searching has shown me a fix in 2009 that was supposed to be incorporated into Windows 7. It either was never done, or it was not pertinent to my situation, since it made no reference to USB connection. The problem described then was that due to the large size of this drive, it did not respond soon enough to the awakening process, and thus was never seen.

Is there a more current fix for this, especially with USB connection?

Answer:Problem recognizing external hard drive after sleep awakening

Hello and welcome sherwin Mate does the problem still exist if the drive is plugged into a different usb slot.

Also does this still happen with other devices other than a drive? To check just reduce the sleep time down to speed up the process of checking.

Plus mate good on you for using some specs but they need to be a little more specific ie chipset on th e motherboard or the mobo version / model.

Use Speccy to find this out Speccy - System Information - Free Download

its free and a very useful tool to keep.

Right, I have a Seagate 250GB external hard drive that runs through a USB port on my Windows XP laptop.

The Hard drive Runs a auto 'Sleep' Mode after about 10 - 15 mins of not being accessed manually through the OS Folders. It then has to 'Wake-up' again which is affecting the way programs, music etc are run off of it.

Ive contacted Seagate and they say there isn't a way to disable this function, but there has to be something that can keep it 'awake' all the time.

So i thought I'd ask you guys, Hope you can help me.

Thanks

I have a U450p that I use with an external monitor and keyboard and mouse. Since the laptop's lid is usually closed, I'd like to be able to wake it from sleep using the external keyboard and/or mouse. However, it seems the only wake to wake it from sleep is to open the lid and hit one of the keys on the laptop's keyboard. I have enabled "allow wake from sleep" on the devices in device manager, as well as disabling power down of the USB root hubs in device manager, but nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, there are no settings in BIOS that are relevant. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am using a brand new Lenovo P51 with 64-bit Windows 10 with a NVIDIA Quadro M1200 video card along with an external monitor (ASUS VS228H-P) connected through HDMI. When my computer goes to sleep, my second monitor turns off. When I wake up the laptop, but 2nd monitor is no longer recognized by the machine and I am unable to use the display. I have tried a number of solutions already:1) I have tried selecting "extend display" under F72) I have tried using the detect display button in System/Display Settings3) I have updated my drivers for both display adapaters (intel graphics 630, and NVIDIA Quadro M1200)4) I have turned the monitor on and off,5) I have cycled through the input options on the monitor while it is on6) I have plugged and unplugged the HDMI cable The only solution to reconnect the monitor I have found is to reboot the computer which is impractical for me while I am using the machine (I am running programs over multiple days and rebooting is not impossible). It is also impractical to turn off sleep mode on the machine - the whole point of having sleep mode is to save my screen and reduce power usage. I also use sleep mode for security - I want my laptop to lock so that someone can't just pick it up any time and use it. I also read somewhere that someone was able to turn off and then turn on the display adapters to reconnect - but this is a ridiculous fix I won't repeat over and over again. Outside of these solutions, has anyone found a way to make Win... I have a HP Notebook Laptop connected to an external display with a unifying wireless device - the Logitech K400 Plus Keyboard. I put the laptop to sleep to save battery power. Now here's the problem; I'll have to physically open the screen door just to get it to wake and its something I do not want to do every time. HP parts are expensive. -_- Its a new laptop but still...they do NOT last. I have the same issue when the batteries goes dead and it goes into hibernation mode. I'd have to open the screen door to press the power switch. Thanks.

This system is a upgrade from a x201. My x201 would wake when moving the mouse or pressing a key on the external keyboard. My X220 is setup the same way in a dock with an external keyboard and mouse. However on this one I have to press the power button to wake it up. I have checked device manage and the power management settings are set to allow this device to wake the computer. But I have to press the power button. A call to Lenovo support did not help. He told me that the hardware was fine and it was a windows configuration issue and he did not support windows I should call Microsoft. After arguing with him because Lenovo sold me windows he escalated thee ticket for me but does anyone know the answer for this. I am sure it is just a setting somewhere and it not a big issue. But it is one I want to fix. Thanks

Answer:Wake from sleep external keyboard or mouse

hey mpf541,curious to know, this happens only when it is docked or does it happen when it is out of the dock?also, the external mouse and keyboard... did it come with its own software/drivers and did you install them? If yes, could you remove it and see if it makes any difference.

After returning from sleep, the external monitor does not seem to 'wake up'.
In order for it to receive input I need to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it in again.
I have updated all latest drivers, except the BIOS which is on A06 since I do not want to upgrade it (yet) since the higher versions currently cause the screen's brightness to flicker. Unless this BIOS is known to address these issues (not listed in the details) I do not see a reason to upgrade it (again).

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

I have 4 Internal HDDs installed, 3 are SATA and 1 IDE, Whenever I wake my PC from a hybrid sleep the IDE drive no longer responds (slave drive) It causes explorer to freeze for awhile as it tries to access and the HD light stays lit until I reboot the PC.

Also Im unable to shutdown properly or reboot when this happens, I have to do a hard reset or hold the power button. (attempting to do a normal restart / shutdown always gets stuck at "logging off").

I never use to have this problem before, it seems to of started after I enabled Intel AHCI in my bios recently, but I didnt think this would effect an IDE drive? The drive works fine before the PC goes to sleep and no SMART errors are reported in HD Tune etc.

Any ideas appreciated.

Answer:One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

If you used the intel controller to set it to AHCI mode - did you install this driver from the gigaybyte site it will update the AHCI driver and should provide correct functionality- Intel SATA RAID Driver - 10.5.0.1015 - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.6) i think its the latest version or equivalent version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver which is needed even when you dont have raid enabled. Note Im not 100% sure here as i have no gigabyte board and i cant unpack the driver to check it.

You could also update to the latest driver for your video card - long shot fix.

Otherwise Switch back to ide mode - AHCI is only usefull for hot swapping hard drives - if you have no need there is no speed difference as most modern hard drives have this enabled automatically. W7 should find the original driver upon rebooting if you just reset from AHCI to IDE mode in the bios.

If you used the microsoft fix, to be sure of success, follow this path in the registry : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci - then right click start - modify and change from 0 to 3 - then go to bios and reset back to IDE mode and reboot.

I'm new to sevenforums and would appreciate the help of some of you. I have updated my user profile with all of the details and specs of my system that is having my issue.

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up.

It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.

I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).

I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down. I have been messing with this issue for a few days now and am asking for some help from the community here at sevenforums. If you need any additional info let me know.

Thanks.

Hey guys,

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it.

I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.

I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times).

I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

I am all out of ideas; I'm currently taking apart the computer (touchsmarts are hard to pry open), but I have no clue about computers so I'm hoping one of you guys can help.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Computer Not Booting Hard Drive/Unresponsive Hard Drive

It should be under warranty...probably too late but taking it apart will most likely void the warranty.....sounds like a dead hard drive/loose cable

If this is in the wrong forum, please move to the correct forum.

I am running windows 7 64 bit, and have 4 external hard drives attached (not the best way, but until I can afford a server, the only way).
I am using my computer as a media center only.
When I wake my computer it can take a while (30 seconds to a minute), before I can use it, due to it starting up my external hard drives, but I have noticed a couple of times, my computer will wake without starting up my external hard drives (able to use media center within 2 seconds).
Does anyone know if there is a way to get my computer to wake up without starting up the external hard drives every time?

Answer:Wake computer without waking external hard drives

Switch them OFF.

I currently have 4 external hard drives connected to my computer. I have each of them set to sleep after an hour of inactivity. However, if I am using the computer, they stay asleep, until I delete something; anything. Any time I send something to the recycle bin, all four of my external hard drives wake up.

I would like for this not to happen. I already went to the Recycle Bin Properties and set each external hard drive to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" thinking that it would quit checking them for deleted files.

I would much appreciate any help on how to prevent these external hard drives from turning on when I delete files off of my computer. And just to be clear, I am NOT deleting files that are on the externals, they are files that are on the Computer.

I use these forums a lot when I have a question, but I have never had the need to post before, so this is my first post. If this is in the incorrect sub-forum, I apologize.

Answer:External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I have EXACTLY the same issue, it's unfortunate no one replied to this

I also set all my drives to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" and everytime I delete a file anywhere ALL external my drives wake up

Is there really no way around this? Is no one else having this issue? Does no one else have an external drive attached to his PC that he wants to sleep while idle? Why is Windows checking ALL the RECYCLE.BIN folders on ALL drives when I delete a file on ONE drive?

It would be really great if someone knew something about this, preferrably some way around this, so the drives can stay asleep when I do not intend to access them but just delete a file on a different drive.

I have a T420 with a Mini Dock Series 3 (433710U).  The External Display is a 30" Dell U3011 monitor connected to the Dock via DisplayPort. As Im dealing with another issue (another thread) the Bios is set for Discrete Graphics only as the Optimus mode currently has a bug which cannot drive this 2560x1600 resolution display.  Now that I have a workaround, I have another problem. When the power savings in Windows7/Power Manager turns the display off (for me its set for 10mins), If I come back 20mins later, shake the mouse, the Dell Display acts like its turning on (LED light turns on blue to indicate signal) and then message flashes on the screen from the Dell monitor stating that its going to sleep.  So now I have a Black display (monitor went back to sleep). I can open the Lid on the laptop (forgot to mention I dont dual display, I just use the 30" exclusively and close the lid on the laptop on the dock) the screen on that shows up. Close the lid again, the monitor does the same thing where it acts like its turning back on and just goes back to sleep.  Someone mentioned a similar problem where they believe the laptop is not sending the correct DPI to the monitor causing it to not be able to display the output.  They mentioned that doing a CTRL+ATL+DEL when the laptop lid is opened, and then closing it again works.  Thats works for me, but only once.  After that, if it sleeps, I have no monitor to use.  Only way to c... hey Dixit, curious to know, let's say if you uninstall Power Manager and use windows built in power management; does the same issue occur ? also what happens if the external monitor is connected directly into the T420's display and not with the docking station ?

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!
Sonya

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

It ba... Read more

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version 7.67.0.50. In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

When I put my computer in sleep mode, it won't 'wake up'. I have to manually turn off the computer and then start it up again. This has happened twice. I'm not putting it into sleep mode until I find out what's wrong and that's exasperating as I normally leave my computer on all day so I can periodically play my games.

Answer:Stuck at start-up / Unresponsive Hard Drive

If the hard drive isn't recognized in your BIOS Setup screen, then the hard drive is most likely your problem. You could check that the cable and power connections are firmly seated on both ends, or swap them with another device if it's a SATA hard drive. Sata hard drives use a narrow, 1/2" wide cable as opposed to the older 2" wide ribbon cables. You could also try removing your hard drive and install it in another computer or use a USB adapter cable to connect it to another PC and see if it's recognized. If that fails, you probably have a dead drive.

I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

Does anyone know of software that will clone one external hard drive to another hard drive. I have tried by attaching both external hardrives  to a computer but Acronis will only find the destination drive and not the source drive. any ideas would be great Ojas

Answer:Any software that will clone one external hard drive to another external hard

What kind of data is on the HDD ? ?Are you saying that Aceonis does not rcognise both externals ? ?If not you can hool up only the HDD you want cloned and have Acronis create and save the image to your internal for now...then power down...unhook that external...and hook up the blank external...power up and clone away.NOTE: I highly suggest verifying the image before cloning...takes a bit longer buy well worth it.It's under the Tools section in Acronis.

I have a Western Digital 7gig hard drive installed as the second drive. Frequently it will not be found when the computer boots. About the other half of the time, all works normally.

The problem first becomes apparent when the BIOS looks for the drives. It will hesitate for a LONG time, then find the first drive, and not find the second drive. If this happens, the drive activity light will stay steadily lit for as long as the computer is turned on - no blinking, always on.

Can anyone advise me, or give me a good guess, whether the problem is likely the drive, power to the drive, or the IDE controller?

Thanks!

I have an issue with the sleep function. The computer does not awake from sleep. When I try to do it, it behaves as if it was waking, but it never ends and there is only a black screen; the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. The only thing possible to do is a hard reboot. When it boots, it shows a notice with a minute report (in the zip file) usually saying there was a blue screen, but I NEVER see any blue screen at all.

I know the power configuration is OK because I have always used the same scheme. A powercfg ?energy report shows several errors and warnings. They refer to USB and PCI (vendor 1002=ATI motherboard), but I don?t know how to repair them.

I downloaded the drivers downloader from Rrecipester.org and downloaded and installed the drivers. They are all Broadcom Corporation signed, the brand of my USB Bluetoth attachment. I rebooted after installing, as recommended. Run powercfg ?energy again and got the same report issues (in the zip file). I don?t think the processor utilization warnings to be very important because they are low and sporadic picks. It has been like this for some time now, so I don?t have a restore point. Can someone help and tell me what I can do so solve this issue, please?

Files uploaded in the attached zip:
. Windows warning after reboot
. Windows dump and xml files (2 = 1 each)
. Powercfg -energy report
I wanted to correct the thread title, but was unable to do it. Maybe someone else can do it.

Quite confident it's a driver issue, it will be very difficult to troubleshoot from the one included dump file though as it's incomplete and inconclusive.

Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

Hi,
I'm using Dell studio 1558 laptop with Windows 7 and 8 in dual boot.
I've 2 external hdd, WD my passport 0740 and Sony HD E1.

well in windows7, these 2 ex-hdd or any one of them doesnt go to stand by,
but in windows8, they go to stand by (stops spinning, indicator led goes off).

In both, windows 7 & 8, same time duration for "turn off hardisk after" are selected, and all other power options are same, I've checked.

Even i face the same issue with my windows 7 in desktop.

What should i do to make them go to stand by in windows 7 ?

Answer:How to make external hard disk sleep/stand by in Windows 7

I would shorten the Sleep period before it proceeds to Hibernate, to take advantage of the Hibernate function which is perfected in Win7.,

I set my installs to Sleep at 30, Hibernate at 45-60. This writes the desktop to HD and shuts the PC down, whereas Sleep keeps power to the RAM and apparently the USB ports. When you resume from Hibernation it also starts up much faster.

On the X1 carbon, i7 - I am having a few challenges, not sure if they are related, but I do see this WAN miniport yellow error. I am not bothered by the error popping up - but here are the challenges. 1. USB is not responsive. Using win8, and when I plug in apple devices, they do not pull up, despite a complete shut-down and start up. The USB on one side sometimes will work while the other doesn't seem to often. 2. I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

Answer:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

my macbook pro is currently our of commission due to a mishap with a cup of water. the person i spoke to on the phone at the apple store said to have the hard drive transferred to an external one in case they need to reformat it. is this even possible if my laptop won't turn on?

Answer:transfer data from laptop hard drive to external hard drive

Depends on the type of water damage has been done.
If your laptop has been a small puddle of water for a little bit of time, yes it will mess up your hdd's connectors and possibly damage it.
If the water spill was like a splash on the keyboard and quickly cleaned up, you have a good chance of the hdd working.
Just depends on what got damaged badly enough for something not to turn on for quite awhile.

Also get rid of that macbooks battery, I have a bad feeling it might not work with your macbook anymore.

So I want to clone one external 2TB with another. So one drive is the main use one and another the backup one. So I copy everything over to backup and i store the backup at another house and then I start using the main: deleting and adding/editing files. What is the best software or whatever to allow me, after some time, synchronize/clone the externals again without deleting all on the backup drive and recopying? (main to backup) and make them clones again? ..Adding and deleting or replacing any nonidentical files.. Like where i can press a button on some software and it do the work for me.
Sorry if this is confusing

Answer:Best external to external hard drive synchronized backup plan?

There's a bunch of applications that can do that.

They all work pretty much the same way, but would differ in how easy they are to understand and configure---the interfaces would differ and the help files would differ.

I use FreeFileSync from sourceforge.net.

Others are Syncback, Folder Clone, Karen's Replicator, FBackup, Second Copy, and Synchromagic.

You should be able to configure them to do one or the other of the following:

1: If you delete or modify a file on the "original", it will also be deleted or modified on the backup.

2: If you delete a file on the "original", it will be retained on the backup. If you modify a file, both the modified and unmodified file will be retained on the backup.

It's up to you which choice you prefer. I use the first method, which is often called "mirroring"--one drive is an exact match of the other.

I have a WD 1TB external MyBook drive that has problems after my laptop comes back from sleep mode. I don't want it on all the time so I'll use my computer (xp sp3), then put it in sleep mode and come back the next day. I plug in the external drive via firewire 400 and the drive will spin, but not read. XP knows it's there because it shows up in the remove hardware button and I can hear it spinning, but the drives (4 partitions) won't show up. A couple of times I rebooted and it worked then, but it's really annoying to reboot.

Yesterday I rebooted and plugged it in and it still wouldn't read so then I unplugged the power from the drive and plugged everything in and it worked. I'm afraid it's getting to the point where I'll have to restart and unplug and that's crazy. Before putting the computer to sleep I safely remove hardware and the next time I open the computer it doesn't want to be read.

Can I force XP to read it somehow without rebooting?

Thanks.

Some external drive enclosures disable access to the drives if they do not sense a connected computer after a specified time and will not re-enable it until the drive power is disconnected and reconnected. Perhaps this is case here.

As per title.

Hitachi Touro 4TB USB3 external drive ejects during sleep mode and often is not acessable or listed in My Computer. It is however listed in the attached SATA drives in the Notification Area and is listed in Devices and Printers.

When this happens the PC hangs during a restart. I suspect because it is waiting for a drive to spin down that isn't connected.

I'm using the latest USB 3 driver from Intel for my board (Asus X99-A) and have tried turning off the option to turn off the drive to save power in device manager.

It still intermittently ejects and won't reconnect after sleep mode though.

Coming out of sleep mode I notice there is the sound of a USB device physically being unplugged and then plugged back in again, yet the drive remains inaccessible.

Please help, it's becoming annoying.

Thanks

Answer:USB3 External Drive Ejects in Sleep Mode

Hello elbeasto!

This could be a sign of the drive itself having issues. I would suggest you to firstly check the drive's health, the manufacturer should have a software for a scan.

Use a different USB cable as well, and check if you need to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.

Try the drive on another system, does it do the same?

This is a recent problem. I have a Toshiba Canvio external drive, not SSD. It's got Bitlocker, so when I turn my PC on or awake from sleep, I have to enter a password to access the drive. Now, if I restart my PC, it works fine. Recently though, when I awaken from sleep, I'll click on the drive to enter the password, and Windows does this eternal loading thing. The address bar in Explorer has that green progress bar moving along, but it never finishes. If I unplug the drive and plug it back in, I can enter the password and access the drive, but after a while it'll start doing to eternal loading thing again. I doesn't seem like it would be the drive; the drive doesn't know whether the PC is freshly restarted or coming back from sleep.

Answer:External Bitlocker drive not working properly after sleep.

I think it may be an explorer problem. I had the problem with the drive again today after awaking my PC, and tried restarting the explorer process. The explorer UI (windows, task bar, start menu, etc.) is gone, but it won't restart and won't go away when I click "end task"

Hi all, I bought a new LG external blu-ray drive and I am having issues with it sleeping very quickly.  It is recognized in Windows 7 and will be accessible for a short period of time after I power it on, but if I don't use it for 30 seconds it goes into some sort of sleep mode.  It works perfectly on the single US 2.0 port on the X230T so it has to be something with the 3.0 port.  The drive is powered by an AC adapter and a single included USB 3.0 cable. I have tried to disable all USB sleeping properties in all areas of Power Manager and Power options in Windows.  Also checked and disabled USB Root Hub power saving.  I also went through the BIOS and have looked over the USB options as well and cannot find why it is going to sleep so quickly.  I have the latest firmware on the drive and also the latest Lenovo drivers for USB 3.0 for the X230T. I'm guessing I'm out of luck at this point since I think I have tried all the solutions possible?? Thanks.

Answer:X230T USB 3 port sleep issue with External Blu-Ray drive

Hi, Rob517

Is the drive plugged in and receiving AC power when it is in the computer? Since it works perfectly in the 2.0 port, I think it has something to do with the drive receiving power from both ends. Is the drive USB 3.0 capable?

If possible I would try using the drive on another machine with a 3.0 port to determine where exactly the issue lies.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I have an internal hard disk not in use ,and I would like to make it as external disk !
I looked on the net and I found I should have the " encelsure " butt I think I wont find it here in my city .
So is there another way ? like usb -esata cable ?

Answer:how to make your internal hard drive into and external hard drive ?

Firstly, where are you based (Which country)? I would get the part of the internet, I trust we are talking about a 3.5" drive? Do you have an esata port on your pc? I would get something similar to this, I think: Play.com - Buy CiT 35M17SEF 3.5 inch SATA / USB / Firewire / eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure online at Play.com and read reviews. Windows 7 desk top computer stopped during use. It would not restart when button pressed. External power supply ok. Possible internal Power Supply Unit failure. Can the pc hard drive data be backed up to an external USB hard drive enclosure before testing to find the fault in these circumstances?

Answer:Hard drive backup to external USB hard drive enclosure

Yes, most HDD is use on laptop and desktops units are pretty standard. The desktops use 3.5 inch internal drives and the laptops are mostlt 2.5 inch. The Sata interface is almost universal. Suitable enclosures are sold by major vendors. Be aware that the very lost cost kits are not real enclosure, just the power and interface components. Not recommended. To easy make a mistake. You will need a working PC or laptop to read the data. And enough free drive space to store your data files. Recovering program files is not piratical, unless the programs were  portable programs. Which is not likely. This video is basic and helpful. (Ignore the lead in advertisement.)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLLQusrmzvIAs you will see in then video, you can buy an enclosure for  any starred hard drive. So just pick out a good enclosure and you can get you data back!EDIT: On of the best tutorials I have seen lately.  He makes it plain and simple and very useful information.  Geek-9pm recommends you watch. That guy is even better that me.

I am unsure about what happens after you convert your internal hard drive to an external hard drive... Let's say the internal HDD was your only laptop HDD and you replaced it with a SSD. If you convert your old internal HDD to an external HDD, what would happen when you open it up on your newly installed OS (on the SSD)?

I am trying to download a new OS but us my old internal HDD as an external drive just to access specific files. However, I don't want any other data/programs/settings/etc. downloaded onto my new SSD. Do I need to delete my old OS when I convert my old internal HDD into an external HDD or does the OS simply get "reduced" to a bunch of files that I will see on my newly installed OS?

If anyone is able to clarify these questions that would be fantastic!

Hi guys,

I'm new on any sort of forums so go easy if it's a stupid question..but here goes.

Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch (he did the building - i did the watching).

To cut a long story short - I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly.

When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.

Does anyone know how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Internal Hard Drive acting like an External Hard Drive

This is the way it works. I have an 80GB SSD and an internal HDD and the same happens if the file/folder is large enough. If you just copy a few MBs, you will not see the window with the green stripe running. But if e.g. you copy 500MBs, you will see it. It physically moves the data. That is different if you copy on the same volume from one folder to another. Then it only makes an entry in the MFT.

I earlier posted about the Aspire AST690-UP925A having 250GB hard drive. I since then contacted Aspire chat support. Apparently, not being tech savy we didn't realize 250 gb hard drive only 112 c drive is able to be used, the d data drive holds the programs to run the computer.

I didn't mean can I use the external hard drive internally. I meant, if I hook it up externally would it work in place of the internal hard drive that is nearly full except for around 10 GB?

So, unfortunately the computer isn't as big as you believe. But...I wanted to know if I purchase (I was looking at western digital elements 2TB external hard drive). Can we use it for this computer. It will not run itunes or anything like that, but we can obviously go online.

My brother wants to buy a new computer, but I know that is probably not the way to go. Should we get an internal hard drive installed and other memory or something or can we use the external hard drive?

I would appreciate any informed help on this since we do not no technical info on computers. Can't really afford to buy another computer right now.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can external hard drive be used for full internal hard drive?

If you want to take out the drive from external hard drive case and install it in your desktop/laptop, then usually you can. Usually external hard drives are just ordinary hard drives accompanied by some extra controller to make it able to "talk" via general ports (e.g. USB). However I am not familiar with digital elements 2TB , so I can not confirm it. But I do have WD external drive, which I had positively confirm that its real drive is just ordinary hard drive.

Note that if you decide to do this, I suggest to find experience people to work on extracting the drive. If you do it yourself you will risk to damage it, and you don't want that since usually opening the closure means voiding the warranty.

I currently am running windows 8.1 x64 bit, and I am thinking of copying my entire hard drive (consisting of C & D drives using a total of 929.2 GB of space.  And wanting to get a Western Digital External Hard Drive with 1.5 TB of space.  I have been led to believe that windows 8.1 has a utility called System Image Back Up Utility (located in the Control Panel).  I have also been led to believe that this can be done completely using a bit by bit copy of the entire hard drive (programs, files, drivers, apps, utilities, etc),  But I can not fine enough info on doing this. And there are still questions, such as How do you transfer the copy from the external hard drive back onto the PC if it should completely crash? (I do have a five disk recovery set I made when I purchased my PC, but still want an additional source of a back up system.)  I can not find the procedures for copying the copy from the external hard drive to the crashed PC, and are ther better and safer programs out there to use instead of the windows system Image back up utility?  I would add that I am somewhat of an intermediate user, useing PCs since windows 95. but there are obviously issues that I need to research before attempting something this complicated and advanced.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in Advance !

A description of System Image Backup can be found here.  If you want both C and D, I would suggest a clone program. Both Seagate and WD offer a free Disk Wizard Program. With the cloning process, you use an external case to perform the clone.  When disaster strikes, you swap out the drives, and continue. Personally, I make clones of my primary desktops every 30-45 days.

Hi, for nearly a year now I've been using a Buffalo 500GB external hard drive.
Just yesterday though, after unplugging it from my PC, using it on another Windows 7 machine and then attempting to reconnect it the my PC, it began to show up on My Computer as a Local Disk rather than an external. In addition, when I try to access it, it gives me this message: E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. My question is, is there any way to return the drive to it's original state or recover the data inside? The data is of extreme importance.
Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone else has had the following issue with USB connected external drive and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit:

When plugged in, the external drive is recognized by the OS, is accessible and in every aspect functions normally. After a period of non-use of the computer, e.g. 8 hours, the USB device gets knocked out. Logging back to Windows, and the 1st message will be "Unrecognized USB device", and the external drive is not visible anymore.

The only way to get the device back is to disconnect its power supply, and plug it back in.

I've done the following :

1) Changed the USB power settings of the OS. USB devices are not allowed to go to sleep
2) Changed the power setting from Seagate Manager to not allow the drive to go to sleep
3) Changed USB Legacy to Enabled on BIOS

But none of these actions has removed the problem.

Any ideas if the drive itself is faulty, or if I am missing some setting somewhere that might cause the strange behaviour?

-Ex

I'm not sure if I should have put this in "Hardware" or not so...
I am, by far, a professional at this so hang in there with me if I confuse you. A few months ago my children broke the screen on my laptop and for a few weeks I was trying to use the External Monitor so it would show up on a monitor my sister gave me. Well I finally got that up and working however, now when I connect my external hard drive to the laptop, it will not show up on the desktop monitor. (The external hard drive is Western Digital).

This external monitor is a new thing for me, actually I knew you could do it but didn't try it as an option until my nephew - who is much younger than me - thought of it lol. Anyway, I have pictures and such on my external hard drive that were put onto the external by the very laptop I am using. I'm not totally sure of the montior I am using, all I can tell you at the moment is it's a Dell. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A135 S266; the laptop has Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I believe the desktop monitor is running with Vista too but I'm not sure if that's important since it is only serving as a "view." Anyway, I would love some help with why the drive may not be working with this set up.

Thanks,
Kerri

Answer:Help with External Monitor and External Hard Drive

This may seem like a silly question, have you tried the HD on another PC to see if the issue is with that?
Also, are you saying it's not showing up in 'My Computer', or are you not getting the option to open files?

Gday

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

Just got a WD elements external drive, 120GB. My father has two computers at his business, and he has not backed them up. A failure of one of the computers means he wouldn't be able to perform day-to-day operations, so a clone of the hard drives is vital.

So I did a little bit of googling, but there isn't one freeware solution that people recommend. I've partitioned it into two equally sized, 55GB partitions. The hard drives that are to be backed up are both 40GB. Anyone know which software is best for cloning the hard drive? I'm comfortable with using command line if need be.

Answer:Cloning multiple hard drives to one external hard drive?

For small single operations I use Clonezilla LiveCD. It's not command line based, but it is text user interface based, so it looks kind of old school. It works great, though.

If you want to get crazy and set up a dedicated box for this, FOG (Linux based, requires a Linux install and a stand-alone computer to act as a server) could do the trick too.

I'd start small with Clonezilla LiveCD and if you want something heavier duty, check out FOG. I use both almost daily. Both are free/open source as well.

As with anything else, do a ton of testing on a practice machine so you get the feel of it. It sounds like this data is critical, so don't use a production machine as your guinea pig to feel out the software.

Hi all,

After almost losing most of my data I want to start a good back-up routine.

My computer has two internal 3TB hard-drives. I have ordered two external USB 3 3TB hard-drives.

I thinking about buying HDClone 'Standard Edition', but I want to make sure it's right for me before I buy.

I want it to be a completely exact copy.

Does HDClone clone 3TB hard-drives? (I saw that some software only clones hard-drives up to 1TB)

Do you think I should buy it?

Thanks!

Answer:Cloning two 3TB hard drive to two 3TB external hard drives

Remember that Cloning means the Target Drives are PRECISELY "the same OR larger" than the original drives. If the original drivers are 2,974,442 formatted and the Target drives are 2,974,308, you MAY have problems. It doesn't take a lot to be 'smaller', in other words.

Before I plan on software, I make sure the drives fit this important criteria.

I can test out some freebie stuff (Macrium Reflect is one example, or if I'm getting Seagates or WDs, they often include a clone-capable package themselves). I don't want to discourage buying good software - I find the best packages have extensive partitioning services, too - making smaller or larger partitions based on Actual Usage rather than some synthetic boundary.

We do a lot of cloning for Boot SSDs, and our practice is to buy two identical drives. Build one up, load all the software, let the user mess it for a few days, then clone it to the 'cold' identical unit. And then make the users switch that 2nd drive for actual usage. If there's a problem, then the original's intact.

Since your 3Tb drives probably aren't your boot drives but are 'just data drives', I wonder about the time spent cloning instead of "just copying what I want to save" directly.

Is there another way to do this without having to buy a program I can not afford to do on social security?

Answer:copy internal hard drive to external hard dri

What are you trying to copy, the entire HDD contents? What would be the point of that? You can't run Windows or any programs from the external drive using the copy/paste method & you can't copy windows files that are in use. If you want to create an entire backup of your system, there's plenty of free software available for just that purpose. We need an better explanation of what it is you want to do.

When my computer goes into sleep mode, it will sleep but the tower will stay active (fans running). When I want to awake from sleep mode, the keyboard and mouse do not wake it up. the power button and reset button are also unresponsive. The only way to restart is to turn off the main power on the back. I thought it was a bad operating system but I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro and I still have the same issue. Could it be a hardware issue or could it be a setting in the bios? Can someone help? Thanks in Advance!

I'm using a Dell Venue 11 Pro (x86 Windows 8.1 tablet with Atom CPU) and it often becomes unusable after waking from sleep. I'm able to navigate around the Metro/Start screen no problem, but apps won't open. It shows the animation of me clicking on them, but nothing ever comes up. In desktop mode, I can't even get the task manager to come up, or close any open windows or anything. I can see the animation of the x button moving when I click it, but nothing happens

Anyone seen this happen before on other tablets? I haven't used Windows as my daily driver in almost a decade, so what would really help me out is if you guys could suggest some tools that might help me diagnose what's going on.

It's like a service that is required to open programs isn't running anymore or something. It doesn't feel slow or laggy, it just won't open anything. Been meaning to leave taskman running so I can see if it's something maxing the CPU, but I really don't think that's going to be it.....

Thanks for any help!

Since I bought it a few months ago, my Flex 15 (Win 8.1 64 bit) will often become unresponsive when I've left alone it for a short period of time (I assume after it has gone to sleep). The screen is off. The NumLock light is on but wont turn off if I press it. The Windows button does nothing. I need to hold down the power button to reboot it.The event log doesn't seem to give a clue to what happened. Any ideas what might be the problem? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Flex 15 unresponsive after sleep.

Check timers if it is set to sleep mode. Either that or try putting into sleep mode and see if it is able to wake up from sleep properly.
