Windows fails to wake from sleep, then corrupts boot

Question: Windows fails to wake from sleep, then corrupts boot

Hi,

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 and I am having an issue where my computer goes into sleep mode, fails to wake from sleep, strangely resumes its state once I do a cold restart, and then after restarting again, refuses to boot.

Here is what's happening step-by-step:
Computer goes to sleep based on the time set in the Balance Power options scheme. Fine. Often, computer wakes up perfectly fine from moving the mouse or pressing a key. Fine. Very occasionally however, upon waking up the computer, the lights, keyboard lights, fans and everything else except for the display comes on. I am forced to do a cold shutdown by pressing the reset button. Upon booting up, Windows displays "Restarting Windows" rather than "Starting Windows" and resumes its state when it went to sleep. Strange but OK. Everything seems to work normally. The problems come in when I then do a shutdown or restart after it has resumed from the cold shutdown. The computer shuts down perfectly fine but during the next boot, freezes right during the animation of the windows logo and immediately restarts the computer and launches into the DOS-looking prompt asking whether I want to do a Startup Repair because the computer failed to boot.

I have tried Startup Repair from HD and from the Windows disc and neither have done anything. I am usually forced to just reformat everything and start anew. This problem recently started occurring after I installed an Intel X-25m 120GB ssd and put the Windows partition on it. I'm not sure if that's related to the problem. Also, all of my power options are set to the Windows default.

My hardware is:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 factory 2.4Ghz
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR2 4x1GB
HDD: Intel X25m SSD 120GB (Windows) + Seagate 400GB HDD (everything else)
Mobo: Intel DG965OT
Video: ATI HIS Radeon HD 5770

This has become a major issue for me and I would like to avoid going through the hassle of reformatting every 2 weeks. I really really really appreciate any input you have in helping me solve this problem. thanks!

Preferred Solution: Windows fails to wake from sleep, then corrupts boot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows fails to wake from sleep, then corrupts boot

Hi,

I just recently got hit with a similiar problem, it unfortunately resulted in a corrupted BIOS that is unrepairable, it ends up locked in a low power state. There is no one single reason why Windows fails to wake up, and it's kind of a common problem. From the research I've put into it, hardware and the version of Windows does not matter. You'll either suffer from it, or you won't. My recommendation would be to disable both your display and PC sleep settings, and stick to manually shutting down and a screensaver to completely avoid it before any possible hardware damage is inflicted, and until there is more information available on it. The CPU, mobo and PSU are the most likely to become damaged.

If you still wish to use Sleep, make sure all your drivers are up to date, along with Windows, might make a small difference.

If you have another system available to you, or are able to borrow a mates, go ahead and use it to test your hardware for faults incase your situation is hardware based, and not failed coding on Microsoft's part. Also on that note, try removing your SSD for a week or two (or however long it usually takes before your system decides to sleep in) and see if it solves it, and post back with results.

I would still keep an eye on here, no less, incase a solution comes to light. Go ahead and do some Google searches on the issue, the plethora of possible fixes people have tried may work for you.

If possible, can you recall anything else you have done before, or just as the problem started occurring? Also, have you noticed your PC self-waking on occasion?

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

Hi folks. I'm having a little weird problem. This is a new system and you can see the specs in my sig. Everything is going well, and there are no problems whatsoever, except for a little weird one. Whenever the pc goes to sleep, it will not come back to life normally. I'll just have to restart it. This is what happens exactly:

Note: It doesn't happen if the PC just went to sleep, i.e. it will wake up if for example it went for sleep like a 5 seconds ago.

I come after a long day at work, and the PC will be sleeping. I'll move the mouse and the screen will come back up but only the mouse is responsive. I can only move the mouse cursor....That's all. If I press Ctrl Alt Del to enter task manager, it will bring me that page where I can choose task manager, log off, switch user...etc. And that will be it. I will not be able to do anything after that. The whole PC will freeze(after I click on task manager for example) and i will no longer be able to even move the mouse or hit Ctrl Alt Del combination to get into task manager.

I thought this might be because of my overclocking but it happened even at stock settings so it is not overclocking related. The only thing I can do is to fully disable sleep mode in both windows and BIOS(I think) to overcome this. This is just a workaround and not a solution.

Anybody have seen this before in windows 7 ? Suggestions? Comments?
Thanks.

Answer:Windows 7 fails to wake up from sleep

1: test your hdd with hd tune or hd sentinel to see it there are any communication or sector problems.
2: disable all background programs and see if the problem continues. if not start adding stuff back unit it happens again.
3: update your bios.
4: my preference, stop using sleep mode and turn it off. it can't take that long to boot?!

stand by/sleep mode has always been a PITA!!

Hi there,

I am running a Windows 7 64-bit setup, and I'm trying to get a timer to wake Windows from sleep or hibernation.

I've got it to work flawlessly on my desktop, however on my laptop, a Dell D630, I can't seem to get it to work. I've created a task triggering on a specific time and running the operation '/c "exit"', which should just start a command prompt and close it again. I've set it to "run with highest privileges" and "wake the computer to run this task". However, it just doesn't boot as scheduled.

The history of the scheduler says nothing at the moment that the trigger is set to go off, but a minut later (probably when I manually boot) I get a "Task scheduler "{....}" instance of the task "\Wakeup" due to a time trigger condition."

What can I do to fix this?

Thank you.

Answer:Scheduler fails while trying to wake Windows from sleep/hibernation.

Hello and welcome to Seven Forums.

Some things you can try for testing:

Turn off "run with highest privileges" - you shouldn't need it for this task

Try different setting combinations for:
"Run whether user is logged on or not" / "Run only when user is logged on"
"Start the task only if the computer is an AC power"
"Stop if the computer switches to battery power"

Compare each page in the Task settings between the Desktop and Laptop.
See if you can find some different setting(s) that might cause this.

If you logon with a Standard account when the computer sleeps, try using an Admin account.

Hope this helps,
David

Good Day, My Lenovo U41-70 laptop fails to wake up from sleep mode after I lift open the screen lid.The power button does light up and I can hear the system running but the screen is not lighting up nor is it showing anything at all. I always have to end up pressing the Power button for a longer time to force-restart the system. This problem seemed to happen after I updated the system to Windows 10. I would appreciate any advice from Leveno or users of Lenovo who have previously encountered & have the solution(s) to the same problem. Thank you in advance. Regards,Jersine

Windows 7 pro, desktop, 2 internal sata hd

Read most of the many threads on this subject. I have turned off Sleep using Control Panel, Editing the Registry, disabling hybrid computer as described in this forums tutorial.

The Start/Sleep button is not grayed out and still shuts down the computer although the automatic timed sleep mode seems to be eliminated. Moving or clicking the mouse does not wake up the computer as originally. I have to remove the power cord for a few minutes and then press the power button. I think the computer then comes back up w/o the windows sign-on window as if awakening from Sleep. Windows 7 initializtion is very slow.

Problem with Sleep arose after installing an external drive enclosure with a sata hd and using the esata interface which did not work and caused loss of 2nd internal hard drive.

I do not mind the automatic sleep mode if the computer would awaken properly.

Forgot to mention the following: Even though the Sleep recovery does not work, the computer responds to Restart and turn on from power shut down normally in its usual quick fashion.

Hello, I have 3 HDDs on my PC. Two WDC 640 GB Blacks (manufacture date June 2009) and a 1 TB Black (manufacture date November 2009). I use the 1 TB Black for storing my documents while the two 640 GB Blacks are for OS/Apps and Scratch files respectively.

The problem is when I wake up the PC from S3 sleep mode. The 2 640 GB Blacks spin up fine and I could get to the desktop but the 1 TB Black fails to start. Has anyone had issues similar to mine? Any suggestions?

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-55P-UD4PA.

Thanks!

My Dell desktop PC has been running Windows 10 since last Fall. About two weeks ago it began to have difficulty waking from sleep. Pressing the power button or a key on the keyboard causes the fan to come on and the hard drive to spin up, but the screen remains dark and in low-power mode. When I press a key the Caps Lock indicator lights up briefly.
I have to shut the PC down by a long press on the power button. When I reboot it, it starts up OK and in fact the previous set of running programs is reopened. I think this might be due to hybrid sleep: when I force a restart Windows reloads state from the hibernation file.
I've tried a couple of suggestions I found online, such as using System Restore to roll back. No improvement. Others have suggested changing the version of a device driver, such as the graphics driver, but my graphics driver is the same version it has been since installing W10.
Has anyone else noticed a change in the behaviour of sleep in the last couple of weeks? I'm wondering if this is due to some update pushed by Windows Update.
TIA for any advice.

Answer:Desktop PC fails to wake from sleep, how can I fix this?

Hi Richard,
Are you using Windows 10 1511 version ? If yes, Please try to install the latest windows update KB3140768 which brings your windows version into Windows 10 build 10586.164. So far it is fixing my issue with "sleep issue" on Microsoft Surface hardware.
No problem so far that I can see.
Hope this helps.

For years I have had dual monitors working fine in my Win 7 machine. Then a few months ago I started having problems when the computer turn on or wakes from sleep mode. The primary monitor turns on then switches off after a second. The only remedy is to
turn off the monitor, turn on, and repeat until finally the monitor stays awake.

I have tried shutting down the computer and starting using the system restore disk - the monitor does not come on.
I tried installing a replacement video card (and turning off the motherboard video support) the problem is the same. This indicates it is not the video driver or physical video chip.

Hi all,

just bought a new Portege M800 running Vista.

When the system goes into sleepmode or hibernation, there isn't any posisbility to wake the system up. I have to remove the battery to start up again.

Downloaded and installed the latest BIOS, did all Vista updates. Also checked the BIOS, wake on LAN and wake on keyboard are enabled
Anyone else with this problem?

Meanwhile, I disabled hiernation and sleepmode in Vista, but this shouldn't be the way to do it.

Any advice much appreciated
Cheers
Dave

Answer:Portege M800 - Sleep mode and wake up fails

Hello

I?m not a Portege M800 owner but normally I would suggest that you should try to update the BIOS and install all Windows updates but you have already dont it.

What you can do now? If you have installed your own Windows version try it with ?factory settings?. Maybe it has something to do with the software or so? I?m not sure.

If it doesn?t work I think you will need professional help from an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and exchange faulty hardware parts if it?s necessary.

but not after a short period?

Hello to all

I have set up a windows 7 x64 machine as a file server for my htpc in the lounge.
Now to save pennies i have set it to sleep at night and then wake in the mornings so its up and ready for the music and movies to be present for the htpc.

Now if i manually run the scheduled task to set the machine to sleep and set the wake schedule for ten minutes later, it wakes fine. But if i run the schedule as it should at night, the system never wakes in the morning and neither will the mouse let me? i have to press the power button for it to come back to life like its hibernating. But i have disabled hibernate using the following link.

I have a step by step guide as to what i have done in regards to both sleep and wake schedule here.

Any advice would be greatly received and tested asap, also when the kids have has their showers and in bed i will provide specs of that system if its going to help.

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

Starting with BIOS 1.61, Twist will fail to wake up after sleeping for approx 3 hours.  After sleeping for 3 hours, the system will enter a "deep sleep" state that Lenovo calls 30-Day Standby.  Due to a BIOS bug, the system is not able to wake from this state.  After trying to wake for 2 minutes (while the red LED flashes), eventually it will fail and the system will reboot.

To work-around this issue, please run Lenovo Settings from the Win8 start screen.  Then click on Power, and choose the option to disable 30-day Standby

On my Twist S230U, I have turned off the 30 day standby as suggested but it has not fixed the problem. At first I thought it had but 1 day later it hasn't. The 30 day standby is still off.

When I put my computer in sleep mode, it won't 'wake up'. I have to manually turn off the computer and then start it up again. This has happened twice. I'm not putting it into sleep mode until I find out what's wrong and that's exasperating as I normally leave my computer on all day so I can periodically play my games.

I have a Dell Dimension E310 running Windows 7. I upgraded to Win7 about 5 months ago and then added a video card about 2 months ago. About the time I added the video card (NVIDIA GForce 8400 GS), my Dell stopped coming out of sleep mode. I have to hard power down and then I can restart. Only recently I've noticed that even when I shut down and let the machine sit for a few hours, it behaves the same when I push the power button as it does when I try to bring it out of sleep. Here is what happens in both cases (trying to come out of sleep or trying to start after shut down):

Power comes on to the computer (the fan starts, the lights on the box come on), however I don't hear the disk drive spin and the monitor doesn't wake up. If I hard power down and then re-power on, everything works just fine.

I have NOT upgraded my power supply and I guess the video card may be drawing more power. Could this be it? Could there be a capacitor that needs to have some charge to get things started and that is why it works on the second start, but not the first start? Or is this a bad hypothesis? Any suggestions out there?

Thanks.

Answer:Dell won't wake from sleep - takes 2x to boot

I've now installed a higher wattage power supply (430 W to replace the old 230 W) which should be more than enough. Unfortunately, symptoms are the same: If the machine is off for a few hours, it requires two tries to startup. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I am unable to boot or wake up my Studio 1558 laptop. Here is everything that may be relevant to the issue.

I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 a few months ago.
The only issue I had after the upgrade was that coming out of sleep mode required a reboot a few times (but not every time).
About two weeks ago I put the computer in Sleep mode.
When I pressed power to wake it up:

The keyboard lit up
I hear the fan start
I hear the optical drive engage
I get a black screen.
I do not hear any beeps.

Pressing the power button again immediately shuts everything down.

Here is what I've tried to get a response:

Removed battery and AC then held down power button to discharge. Result: nothing.
Pressed Fn+F1 with an external monitor attached. Result: nothing.
Pressed D while powering. Result: Screen flashed different colors but didn't boot.
Pressed Fn+F5 while powering: Result: nothing
Created a Windows10 installation CD (on another computer) and tried to reboot so I could run Repair your computer. Result: nothing except now...

I can't eject the CD from the optical drive
Pressing D no longer flashes the screen

So I've tried everything I can find. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! Been pulling my hair out for a week with this. I am an advanced user who is totally stumped. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional x64 with all drivers installed from lenovo.com x230 3435-22U having issues where if it goes to sleep. When the machine wakes up, SOMETIMES it allows me to move the mouse with no issues and continue to use the PC.  SOMETIMES, I have to use the touchscreen to move the mouse and then can continue using the trackpad. and SOMETIMES, it is totally frozen at the log-in screen and then powers down suddenly. Hardware diagnostics all check out just fine. I have also switched SATA in BIOS to 'compatibility' and upgraded the BIOS as recommended. I have also disabled AMT inside the BIOS. I'm really stumped here. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Our machines, when they sleep, then try and wake up again, get a "no boot device found" error.  reboot, it goes into diagnstics.  Reboot again, it goes into attempting bootp. Reboot again, it starts windows 10 normally. I have turned off all os options with regards to sleep (high power power mode, turned off hybrid sleep, turned off "turn off hard drive after" etc..._)  all to no avail. Any ideas?  Thanks update: found we had a slightly older bios, so I'mgoing to see if that helps (.012 vs.014)

I'm new to sevenforums and would appreciate the help of some of you. I have updated my user profile with all of the details and specs of my system that is having my issue.

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up.

It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.

I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).

I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down. I have been messing with this issue for a few days now and am asking for some help from the community here at sevenforums. If you need any additional info let me know.

Thanks.

When my WinXPPro SP3 machine is in sleep/standby/suspend mode (S1 or S3), the fax modem wakes the machine some of the time but not all of the time. I want it to wake the PC every time, with 100% reliability. (When the PC is up and running, the modem and the machine receive faxes beautifully.)

What do you suggest?

Modem: Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem with recent driver update to version 7.67.0.50 (7/3/2007) (but this problem is the same now as before with the 2004 driver version)
PC: Dell Optiplex 755
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 @ 2400 MHz
RAM: 2GB, of which 1.4GB is usually free
BIOS: A14
OS: WinXPPro SP3 with all updates
AV: Avast Home Free
Anti-spyware: SpywareBlaster Free, Spybot S&D Free and AdAware Anniversary Free
Fax software: MS Fax Console that comes with WinXPPro SP3
Printer/Fax Printer: HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless AIO (model A909g)
Screensaver: XP logo after 9 minutes; do NOT show welcome screen on resume
Power Settings: Home/Office Desk; Turn Off Monitor after 10 mins; Turn Off Hard Disks Never; System Standby after 20 mins; System Hibernates Never; Do NOT prompt for password when computer resumes from standby
Home network Ethernet connection: Intel® 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection card with all Wake on LAN settings ON.
Browser: Firefox latest but use IE occasionally when necessary
Email: MS Outlook Express 6 to POP3/SMTP email service
Misc: I also run LogMeInFree version 4 on all my home computers

Thanks.

I have a c200 425 3gu all-in-one that has been very frustrating for 2 issues.   Since I've had it: 1.  On booting the computer, the screen is black.  I have to put it in sleep mode using fn/pc key, then once the power button is flashing (which sometimes takes several fn/pc hold downs), i think push the power button briefly.   Then the monitor display led turns on showing the monitor has been switched off.  Then I push the monitor power button and I have display.  If I put it to sleep instead of turning off computer, it does the same thing.    I have waded around the Lenovo support site until I feel like puking.   There must be a simple fix and it must be a problem on more than just my machine.   Very frustrating.     2. Slow.   I have DSL, which isn't great but i regularly get 3MB download.   On my Dell laptop using a wireless connection, I have this speed.   On my bluray player I have this speed, again a wireless.   But on the C200, I have half the speed, whether wired or wireless.   I've turned off all virus and malware software, deleted all uncessary programs - plenty of hard drive space.   There is no gaming software or any fancy software.   This machine is just used for web surfing.   1GB Ram.   This thing should be faster.  Any ideas?

Answer:No Display on Boot unless put in to sleep, wake then turn on monitor switch Problem All-in-One C200

hi Lews,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

Regarading your questions, try to:

1. Reboot the computer in Safe Mode . If the problem doesn't occur, open Device Manager (click Start > Device Manager) and under Display Adapters, uninstall the display driver (this can be an Intel GMA3150 or Nvidia G305M). To reboot into normal mode, open msconfig and under General Tab, set it to Normal Startup and observe.

If the issue persists, but can hear something on the background, there's a possible short on the function board (this is the chip that controls the buttons at the lower right side of the screen) and you will need to contact Lenovo support for service. Support phone list here.
2. For slow Wifi, If you have the Atheros AR9285 Wireless Adapter and running Windows 7, you can try to:
a. Update your wireless card driver to v10.0.0.75, get it here.
b. Depending on your brand of router, make sure you disable WMM (Wireless Multimedia) and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
c. Use WPA/WPA2-PSK TKIP or AES encryption.
d. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz), try to use only 2.4Ghz band.
e. After applying steps a-d, try running a speedtest again via www.speedtest.net

Let me know your findings.

Cheers.

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

It ba... Read more

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version 7.67.0.50. In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

Answer:Trouble with Wake on Ring, Wake on LAN and Standby - Sleep - Suspend

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

Hi

I've been searching for a while now trying to resolve this problem. There are loads of threads and I've tried loads of solutions like uninstalling and reinstalling drivers etc.

The situation I have is that Windows will sleep and wake perfectly fine if I use the remote that came with my TV tuner card but nothing else. If I try to wake it using the wireless USB keyboard I have it appears to power up but nothing happens. The power light goes from flashing to soluid but there doesn't appear to be any other movement. Equally when Windows Media Centre tries to wake to record it does the same thing.

Are there any suggestions of what I can try and what should I look at (and / or post here) to try and help debug?

Thank you in advance
Dean

I have done a Google search on this problem and have checked and re-checked all of my computer's sleep settings. All are set so as to enable mouse or keyboard wake up from sleep. I have checked my bios for any settings that would inhibit wake up from sleep.

Not only will my computer not wake up from sleep, but when I restart it after sleep (I must do a power off restart) it will not start properly. It prompts to resume Windows and then locks up. I can get out of this loop only by turning power off again. Other than this problem the computer works properly.

My computer will awake from sleep if it's in it for a short period of time. If it's been in sleep mode for a few hours, it won't wake up. I tried moving/clicking the mouse, pressing buttons on the keyboard. It won't even reboot/reset from the power on switch or the reset button. The only way to get it out of sleep is if I go and flip the power supply switch off and then on.

Greetings, jkman.

You might try Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings - look at the settings there, such as Hard disk, Sleep, USB, etc., see if you can disable anything that appears to affect your symptoms.

That leads me to believe that there might be some extended power setting that's causing the freeze.

7 has been running perfectly since I installed it Jan. 2. Around Feb. 10 I noticed that I could not wake it from sleep, I would have to cut power, wait a bit, and then boot. When it boots however, it will prompt that it is "resuming windows" like it had been sleeping. All windows updates are installed and I have Panda Antivirus running along with Spybot (both show no infections or errors). I looked in the action center for errors and got the following message:

I think this is the problem, there were about 12 other listings of the error.

I'm not sure if it's just that my bios needs to be updated or what, so I'm just looking for any suggestions on what to do. (My bios hasn't been updated yet since the install of 7)

Some Specs:

MOBO is an ASUS P5WDG2 WS Professional
Dual Core 2.6ghz
6 gigs of RAM
8800GTS (driver version is 8.17.11.9621) aka 196.21
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (yeah, it's old)
[also I have a USB keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse that uses a USB dongle to connect]

Any help is appreciated!

Hi Guys,
would like some help/advice please. I have installed Win7 clean install on my computer, my problems is that if I leave mu computer for say 30+ minutes windows goes to sleep/hibernates and I find it hard to wake up normally have to reboot.

I have been through all the power management settings, and selected Never to all the selections in the advanced section, also in my power plan. I have even formatted my Drive and reinstalled win7 but still have the same problem.

When it is asleep, I have a halfmoon key on my keyboard, I have tried pressing this to wake it up but to no avail, also pressed the main power button, but this normally shuts it down.

Is there anything I can do to stop this happening, run a small program to keep it awake, or alter something in commands to stop it.

Your help and advice is really appreciated
Thanks and Regards
Bob

It is an overly discussed topic about the S3 sleep state. If your bios is not set for Legacy USB devices, the OS is allowed to shut down the USB hub, wireless mouse and keyboard. You are going to have problems waking the system out of S3 state.

- 4GB RAM
- Motherboard ASRock K10N78FullHD-hSLI R3.0

The only way my pc wakes up from sleep is by pressing the power button. The keyboard/mouse will not wake the pc up from sleep.

I have tried all the troubleshooting/Youtube tips/device manager settings and nothing will wake my system from sleep, other than the power button.

I also tried a different keyboard/mouse which plugged into a USB port and that would not wake my pc up either.

I also tried different power options settings and nothing worked.

Here is my hardware list: ASUS Z87 Deluxe/Quad motherboard with 16 gigs of RAM; Samsung 950 PRO M.2 SSD plugged into a PCIe slot (used ASUS M.2 X4 adaptor); cpu is the intel i7-4770K; video card is the AMD Radeon HD7700.

So I was wondering if there are any other tips which would get my keyboard or mouse to wake my pc up from sleep?

I don't want to wake it up from my smart phone.

thank you.

Answer:I can't wake up windows 10 after sleep mode

Welcome to Windows Central.
There are mixed findings/opinions and suggestions on this matter since the issue could be a result of a mixture of different issues, such as hardware settings, drivers, software settings and configurations, etc. Some of the solutions worked for others while not working for others. Some of the ideas discussed are:
1. If you let your PC sleep using a hardware button, then that same hardware button should be able to wake the PC up.
2. If you've allowed your PC to wake up through USB in the BIOS, then put your PC to sleep and then unplugged any USB device attached to it while it was sleeping, then that PC won't wake up unless the hardware power button is pressed. This could also be applicable to Bluetooth devices, since Bluetooth may be temporarily disconnected when the device goes to sleep.
3. If your PC had a custom manufacturer-specific software (e.g. Samsung Control Center) that allows the laptop (what device are you using, by the way?) to wake up when the lid is opened, then this feature was completely removed in Windows 10 brought about by the uninstallation of that software. You would need to re-install that software, run it in compatibility mode for a previous version of Windows and then re-enable the said feature.
Should you wish to provide us with more details or ask further questions, please don't hesitate to create a Windows Central account and respond to this thread.

A quick comparison I did today between nearly identical machines reveals that Windows 7 might take longer to sleep and wake (unless I've got a hardware issue).

A recently purchased refurbished HP computer running Vista with 8GB DDR3 RAM, an AMD Phenom II X4 910 processor, and a 1TB hard drive. Sleep mode activates fast -- about 6 seconds. The computer wakes in less than 5 seconds.

Today, we got essentially the same computer (same specs), but the newest version with Windows 7 preinstalled (long story about why we needed another one). Sleep mode on this unit takes more than three times as long -- 20 seconds, while waking takes just over 10 seconds. (Plus, both sleep and wake are "louder").

I'm very curious to know what might account for this. I expected basic Windows 7 functions to be faster, or at least equally quick. (By the way, I compared both with the same program running -- just Windows itself and Firefox.) A slower sleep time isn't necesssarily an issue, but just something I noticed and am curious about (as I tend to keep my PCs in sleep mode and don't shut them down).

Can someone help please?  I literally just got my Flex 3, with Windows 10 and it won't wake from sleep.  I have to hard power it off then restart it.  I have read forums and changed all my settings so that it neer goes to sleep, or I hybernate it, or just turn it off when I am done, but that isn't really a solution, it's just a bandaid.  I also read about updating the intel graphics drive, which I did and it fixed it for about a week but now it is back to the same thing and won't wake from sleep.  Can anyone help please?  I love my Flex but not waking from sleep is quite annoying as I don't want to just leave my computer off or on at all times.  I use it frequently and don't want to have to shut it down or just leave it on every single time I don't use it.

My computer running windows 8 and it cannot wake from sleep most of the time. When I built this computer last year, it can wake from sleep 9/10 times. However, now, almost every time I try to wake my computer from sleep, it crashes. This is what I notice when the computer is about to crash when waking from sleep: Power button is pressed, GPU fans and direct PSU connected fans spin up. Fans connected to Mobo do not spin up. Power button continues to blink even as if still asleep.

I strongly suspect it's the Mobo that is causing the sleep problems. The Mobo have been dropped and 6 out of the 10 sata ports do not work properly. I tried different bios versions and the latest version, and reset all values to default( no oc, xmp), and sleep problems still exist. The PSU and GPU have been tested with another setup with no problems. I tried another operating system and same sleep problems exist. Windows mem. diagnostics passed. Before I go out and buy a new mobo, I want to be 100% sure that my problems are caused by my current mobo.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. Just bought a Windows 7 PC today. After setting it up, it looks as if Windows 7 takes longer to sleep and wake up than Vista. Here's how I compared the two:

1) We have a recently purchased HP running Vista, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1 TB hard drive, and an AMD Phenom II X4 910 processor. With just Windows and Firefox running, the computer takes 6 seconds to sleep. Wake-up takes just under 5 seconds.

2) Today, we purchased the latest version of the same HP computer -- so the same processor, RAM, etc., but running Windows 7 (by the way, it's a long story why we have two of the same in our house). With just Windows and Firefox running, the computer takes more than 3 times as long to sleep -- 20 seconds. Wake up takes just over 10 seconds.

Any ideas what might account for this? Certainly, the operating system is different, but I guess I was expecting basic Windows functions to be faster, or at least as fast. Would anyone with Windows 7 mind timing their sleep and wake-up modes? I'd be curious to know if your sleep/wake times are similar. Thanks.

The problem:

I shut the computer by putting it to the sleep mode. And then, I switch off the lamp on the table, or the bigger lights in the room by using the switch on the wall, or disconnect some device (which is not a part of the computer) from the wall.

... and the computer wakes up as I use the switches or disconnect something!

Somehow the computer is getting a signal from the power circuit to wake up.

How to prevent it?

System specs should be in the profile, ask for a more detailed overview.

Answer:Windows is in sleep, other devices in the room wake it up...

Hello johnmatrix. Welcome to the Forum.

It sounds like you have "dirty power" in your home. This is caused by either unreliable transmission from the electrical utility's supply lines, or improper wiring inside the walls of your home. Most likely a missing ground, an "open neutral", or arcing.

To address your computer, you should use a UPS (Universal Power Supply) connected between the wall and the computer.

But you should have an electrician check out the wiring in your home. Those symptoms are not normal and could be dangerous.

Is there a fix for this?  I just ran the latest update as of 11/15/2015.   Prevoiusly on Windows 8.1, sleep worked fine. Now, all it does is try to boot, but shuts down and goes into a loop. So, the only way to get it back running again is to hold down the power button.  But what's the point of putting it in sleep mode if I have to do that each time?

Hi everyone,

When I wake up from sleep, Windows 8 wakes up and opens up everything I had open but it's as though it's mimicking waking up from hibernate. When I wake up the PC I see the BIOS screen, followed by a black screen, then opens up Windows with my applications. It's not instant like my other PC with W7, especially considering I have an SSD.

Furthermore, I went to my BIOS and put the ACPI suspend type to S1 from S3, which fixed this issue however my fans would always be running in sleep then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello,

So my problem is that I have upgraded to Windows 10, on a system previously running Windows 7. My system, since Windows 10 has been out, has been unable to wake successfully from sleep.

What happens is that I can "wake" it with the mouse and keyboard, it beeps, revs, all that jazz, but then it hits its idle state and the monitor never detects a signal during this time period. The only way to resume function is to hold the power button and restart.

I contacted Microsoft, and they tried to suggest I pay for support when their OS is responsible for breaking this functionality, not user configuration. I know this, because it didn't work on the vanilla install of Win10 either, despite working flawelessly on 7.

Now, for the details:
OS: Windows 10 64x Pro
Mobo: Asus P8Z77-M
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB 2x 8-8-8-24 1600mhz
Intel i5-3570K
Evga-Build NVIDIA 660ti 2GB DDR5
PSU: Corsair 650W... can't remember precise make.

What I have tried:
- Clean install
- Restore Point
- Manually setting graphics PCIE in BIOS
- Win10 Compatible BIOS updates (done with two separate BIOS's post-win10)
- Chipset Updates (only one Win10 one released)
- Windows Updates (Current version)
- All driver Updates
- Edit Power plans for sleep and Dev Manager enabled virtually all devices with the option to wake the computer
- Cables switched out, all are functional
- SFC /scannow

Yea.... so that's where I stand. As you might expect, I'm running out of ideas. Thank you very much for any assi... Read more

Not sure where to post this ... hence new thread.
Has anyone found a magic keystroke combination for "Sleep" or is there anyway to create one? I know about Win+I then Power then Sleep.

Has anyone found an option to stop scheduled tasks or other triggers that "Wake" your computer from sleep? I find my computer running in the morning after putting it to sleep at the end of the previous evening! I have reviewed all 41 scheduled tasks created by Windows and installed applications and "apps" and found none that have the Wake Computer check box checked. What's annoying is the fact that once woken the computer does not go back to sleep again! I am using the supplied balanced Power plan. Any advice?

I use this approach to the various "power" options. Check your wake on lan settings in Device Manager > for your various network adapters. Also, check wan on lan setting in BIOS or, I suppose, UEFI.

System spec is below.

The problem.

I pressed the circle button with the vertical lline in Vista (from pressing Start) This sent the computer to sleep or hibanate I dont know which. I cannot get the computer to come back on. The monitor remains black (no picture) and says no signal.

I have deprived the computer of power. This was achieved by unplugging it from the wall, and removing the power cable also from the computer.

I have tried restarting the computer but to no avail. I have also removed the keyboard and mouse when I try starting up. I have also tried, holding in the power button and then restarting.

No matter what I try still no joy. No signal on the monitor. The lights in all cases come on, on the base unit and I can hear fans spinning etc.

I have read about this issue in round about ways but all of the fixes seem to rely on actually being in windows.

I'm at my wits end please help !
Thanks

Answer:Windows Hibernate sleep wake up problem

I would remove your video card and then replace it back it. Then I would watch it start up and see if anything wired goes on inside your case. If not and all looks good but there is still no monitor signal I would check to see if it is set to the right signal, the newer monitors have DVI VGA etc and you must properly select it.

If none of this helps I will look into it further.

In your specs you also say that you are using ati radeon 4870x2, a dvi card, but then you say under DVI cable "none"

Hi all,

My Toshiba C70-B is running under windows 10 and I have a problem several times (not always, which is really weird) I put my PC in sleep mode.
Sometimes (frequently though), my PC doesn't react when I am trying to wake up : the screen remains black and pressing num lock doesn't induce any reaction of the system. I have already updated my BIOS to the latest version and updated all of the relevant drivers for windows 10 from here http://win10upgrade.toshiba.com/swup...spx?region=TEG (system driver, HW Setup, Display utility, Audio enhancement) and nothing changed....

Furthermore, I first of all accepted windows proposal to update the "X64 ACPI-Compliant Value Added Logical General Purpose Device" but the situation turned out to be worse with this setup (never emerging from sleep mode) so I turned back this driver to its latest version...

Would anyone have an idea on how to fix this issue (without making a full reinstallation of the system...) ?

Thanks in advance and regards,

Raphael

Hi. I have a home built HTPC running Windows 8 with Windows Media Center. My sound card is a Silverstone EB01 USB DAC (i.e., it's an external USB device). When the computer wakes from sleep, there is no sound. I can fix this by either (a) unplugging and reconnecting the USB connector or (b) disabling then re-enabling the sound device.

This is driving me and my family crazy. What's worse, it worked perfectly fine under Windows 7.

There are no drivers for this device, it's pure plug'n'play. In case it's relevant, the Device Manager seems to recognise it as a Burr-Brown PCM2072E.

I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help me fix this one.

Answer:Windows 8 not seeing USB sound card after wake from sleep

If it is in device manager, check it's properties and power savings for it. In power settings plan could be some settings for it to.

After an upgrade to Windows 10, my HP Compaq 6005 Pro Small Form Factor will not wake up properly from sleep. After sleep, if I press a key on the keyboard or press the power button, I hear the fan and hard drive start up, and the monitor goes from completely off to on yet black (I can see a small difference, and the monitor reports that it receives a signal). But nothing happens, including if I press various key combinations such as those which would cause rebooting. Sometimes my mouse pointer is visible but usually not. If so, it will not move. If I hold down the power button, killing the power supply, and the press the power button again, the computer wakes up (not rebooting). As a history, this machine had a clean Windows 7 install, then a Windows 10 upgrade, then a Windows 10 clean install.  I have a vague memory that the computor originally went to sleep and woke up OK a few times, and now doesn't. However, my memory could be wrong. I have tried:* all Windows updates* using HP website for all relevant updates, including BIOS* display adapter (graphics card) update* Windows Power Usage Troubleshooter* turning hibernation off and on again in the command line (powercfg /h off and on) Any suggestions? With thanksKimock

Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes.

I use a monitor, USB wireless mouse and a USB wired keyboard with my NB100.

My keyboard has a power button and it's set up to put the computer into sleep mode when pressed, which works fine. My problem is that the only way I can wake the computer is to press a key on the NB100's built-in keyboard, pressing anything on my USB keyboard does nothing.

I've gone into device manager and unchecked 'allow computer to turn off this device to save power' and also enabled everything in the BIOS but it still wont work.

I'd really like to get this sorted out as I have the NB100 tucked away out of sight and it's a bit of a pain to have to dig it out, open the lid and press the space bar every time I want to wake the computer :-(

Any ideas anyone?

When waking from system S3 sleep I can immediately access my c drive and all its files. I cannot, however, access my media drive for 2-3 minutes after wake. After that time passes, response is snappy once again. I have no such issues when I reboot.

Sometimes on wake - I'd say once out of every 2 dozen, my media drive disappears completely.

I contacted Seagate technical support and they had me increase the "Delay for HDD (Secs)" from 0 to 10 or something. This had no impact on wake from sleep, only on fresh boot.

I've swapped countless power/SATA cables and have even swapped out my media drive for another and had the same problem.

I've disable hybrid sleep and hibernation all together.

Have you always had your OC at 2.7 or just recently bumped it up? I've just gone through hell with my Shuttle once I OC'd from 2.5 to 2.7. Just a weird coincidence that my PSU started acting up and before that my 7200.11 Seagate started doing weird spin up spin down shenanigans. I have same chipset as you. Try 2.5 with HT @ x4. I know your situation's not the same and it sounds more like a software issue.. but just worth a try to narrow things down.

My PC hangs at startup. Nothing works, no mouse, no keyboard, everything just freezes! I turn on the PC in the morning and turn it off at night when i go to bed. It only freezes when I first turn it on in the morning. The only way to 'unfreeze' it is to do a hard reboot by pressing on the power button for awhile. The weird thing is, if i use to PC for a few hours then decide to reboot it, it works perfectly fine. Seems like it hangs after the PC has been off/idle for too long. This issue has been happening since October 2010. First it would hang maybe once a week (i ignored it thinking that its just a minor thing). Now i have the problem everyday!
Another problem I started having since a few days ago is that I can't wake my PC up from sleep after it has been sleeping for about 2hrs. I move the mouse and the fans will start running but there is no light at the power button to indicate that it is on and working. My screen is blank. I have to off the power switch and turn it back on. Then it will load everything for me like how i left it. Weird really.

The is no errors in my event logs. The only errors are from when I do the restart. There are no errors under system, nor under applications. (That's because I fixed all errors)
Hardware diagnostics did not find any hardware problem. That tool even did a memory test for me and found no errors.

Howdy all, I seem to have the worst luck with my PCs either not sleep or they wont wake up! lol my current issue is not waking up, every night I put my pc to sleep and the next morning when I click the mouse or push a key either nothing happens or the tower lights up and fans kick on but the screen stays black. and I must power down and restart

I have all new video drivers, I have a feeling it may be my keyboard because sometimes the keyboard doesn't shut down when the pc is put to sleep. It still has all its lights on. It is a Merc steel series gaming keyboard,

The only other weird errors I get in my event viewer are these, and they have to do with windows search.

Eventid 1006 The Windows Search Service has failed to create the new search index. Internal error <4, 0x80070002, Failed to add project: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects>.

The Windows Search service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Eventid 7023
event id 7034

The Windows Search service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 37 time(s).

Any help would be great!

Answer:Windows 8.1 wont wake up from sleep mode

Hello jdude,

I has this issue once as well. I added AHCI Link Power Management - HIPM/DIPM to my Power Options. Setting it to HIPM+DIPM stopped this for me. You might give it a try to see if it may for you as well.

Hope this helps,

Hi everyone,  My manager seems to be having an issue with his ThinkPad S1 Yoga ever since he upgraded to Windows 10 back in July. He's now running the TH2 update that was released last month and he is still having issues with Sleeping and Waking the Notebook.  When shutting down the computer it will not fully shut down, resulting in the battery draining and the little red light on the lid will blink very quickly - The only fix is to hard reset the PC by holding the power button.   When the Notebook is on battery power and goes to sleep for being idle - it cannot be woken up and the only way to get the PC to work again is to hard reset again - meaning he loses all his work.  Is there a permanent fix in the pipeline or is this a case of restoring back to Windows 8.1?  ThanksChris

Answer:S1 Yoga: Windows 10 - Sleep/Wake Problems

Hi Chris-R

Can you please post your the full model number of the Yoga?

I have a TP Yoga 14 and it took me some time to stabilize the drivers. Maybe you should try to re-install the Lenovo Power related drivers to see if it can fix your problem.

I also like to have the drivers updated, I can share with your the following tips:

1) Try first Windows Update and update all the drivers and Patches
2) Try Lenovo System Update to get any new/missing drivers.
3) Try to install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion from the Windows App Store, Lenovo Companion also has a "update driver search"
4) Sometimes all that software does not recognize some updated / missing driver. Check Lenovo's Support Site and search for your specific model drivers.

I hope this helps you or gives you a hint.

Regards

Read more
