Major problems shutting down

Question: Major problems shutting down

Hello!

I recently bought a HP laptop running Windows 7. In a nutshell, I cannot effectively shut the computer down, and Windows updates do not install properly. When I try to shut down, the computer just spins for ages and eventually goes blank. Then, I have to select "start in safe mode" and shut down from there.

Has anybody else experienced this problem? Any advice on how I can fix this issue would be most welcome.

Preferred Solution: Major problems shutting down

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Two things, do you have anything plugged into your USB drives when you try to shut down?

Also, the very first thing you want to do is open up the Run Command as Administrator and type in SFC/ scannow This will repair your Windows Update and hopefully whatever else is holding up your PC from turning off. SFC is the System File Checker.

Background: home build - asus motherboard 2.33Ghz, intel core 2 duo, 4G (2x2) ddr 2 ram, 400G hdd, 2x DVD rw lightscribe, GeForce 8600

Clean installed a genuine Vista Ultimate 32-bit about 6 weeks ago and from day 1 it's been completely unreliable. We're not getting anything in the way of error codes bar one blue screen on shutting down this evening which said Driver-power-shutdown-failure. Never had it before, but we do frequently have problems shutting down.

On turning on, it frequently tells us that windows failed to shutdown properly, even if it appears to shut down with no problems, and asks us how we want to boot. If asked to boot in safe mode it begins loading drivers then freezes. If we ask it to boot normally, 75% of the time we get to the windows loading screen and then it freezes. Occasionally we get past the loading screen only to have a black screen that freezes. Similarly it freezes 75% of the time when you ask it to shut down via the start menu.

It frequently fails to recognise peripherals that I have repeatedly installed - for example, cisco linksys usb network adaptor. I'm getting c++ runtime errors for the linksys wireless network manager too - no error code though. On occasions, every program you try to open - microsoft and otherwise - comes back as not responding which only resolves if you reboot the system, where we are often faced with the issue outlined previously.

I don't know if it's related, but I've also had to disa... Read more

Answer:Vista ultimate - major problems: booting, shutting down...

Sounds like windows may be having problems with the default
hardware drivers.
Have you gone to the manufacturers web site to get the latest
drivers for your hardware?
You would want to start with the motherboard drivers.

Make sure the system clock is set properly.
That can cause installation and software problems if it is wrong.

If none of that helps,I would start looking for a hardware problem.

Hello. You were all nice enough to help me previously with my personal computer. But my problem is NOTHING compared to what my sister is now going through with her computer. I'm posting from her computer and hoping that again you may be able to help.

READ & RUN ME FIRST has been completed, but with some setbacks. I was unable to run BitDefender and PandaActiveScan. First, I was unable to access ANYTHING online in Safe Mode With Networking. Second, it literally takes almost 5 minutes to load a single webpage while in Normal Mode. I am amazed how SLOW this computer is running in Normal Mode, especially online. It seems much, much slower than even a dial-up connection. With that in mind, BitDefender and PandaActiveScan would not allow certain elements of the program to run! There were error messages for each.

Multiple errors constantly pop-up and do not simply go away when clicking on the close window button. I'm truly afraid that this computer is highly infected. Trojan warnings everywhere... dll stuff popping up. Also, the computer will not RESTART or SHUTDOWN! The errors prevent it. You have to manually push and hold the power button.

PLEASE, PLEASE help. I will do all that I can to help. Attached are the files that I was able to run.

Thank you SO VERY MUCH.

I have an older computer that I received.

It seems to have so many problems I can't even do the normal steps in the READ ME file.

It seems to have "hijacked" the NIC Card, Modem, USB Drives and everything. There are so many errors that pop up on reboot its insane. I was able to find a dormant AOL 4.0 and loaded it and was able to open and send emails. I email HJT to myself and opened it on an old AOL account ran it and emailed back to myself and I will attached it if someone can help.

Am I in the right place?

Please help

This was written by me a week ago. If you want the background story, please skim over it

---------------------------------------------------------About a month ago, I started to randomly recieve these errors which would result in the blue screen of death including error messages such as page_fault_in_nonpaged_area and IRQL_not_less_or_equal. I googled them and found that various factors including faulty drivers or even hardware problems were to blame. But then other problems starting to arise, such as missing dll files messages at startup, etc. It might've been a virus too...after 1000x system checks, no such luck in finding one. It got so bad that I coudln't stay on the desktop long enough to save my files. Even while attempting to reformat, the computer wouldn't last long enough before the blue screen attacks. At the time I thought it was hardware problem. I had opened my case to find a ridiculous amount of dust built up. After a few days the computer wouldn't turn on altogether.

So I ordered a new case, speakers, monitors (I needed an upgrade from my previous ones...this is unrelated to the problem) and a new motherboard. After essentially building a new computer from old parts, I start up only to find the same problems. Okay, so it's a software problem...probably some ******* virus that caused all of these problems. Too confirm this I removed other hardware and replaced it and the same error messages came up at random times....so this is a virus. Or is it? Could it... Read more

Answer:Major MAJOR problems...virus?

Both of these messages are generated for one of two reasons either a conflicting driver trying to access areas it shouldn't or memory.

After the IRQ not less message there should be the name of a file, which will be a driver, update or remove that device driver and the device if needed (USB 2 devices are notorious for this), if there is no file name your memory is suspect.

Its very unlikely these are the symptoms of any virus, after all they can only proliferate if your machine runs, so its not much use if it keeps keeling over!

Hello,

I'm working to clean this computer out today, except I've ran across some problems. Here's what going on. This computer first off has some crazy partitions. The C drive has 15 GB with 2% free space (used to be zero), and the D drive (where a backup is, this is a HP) has 60 GB with 94% free space. Everything on the computer is on the C drive. Music (theres a ton) programs, everything. The last thing I want to do is a reformat, since right now I have no way of transporting all these files elsewhere. There are a few users logged in, but their mom wont be back for an hour or two, and she has Admin rights with a password I dont know. That means I cant install some programs for now. I have gotten Ad-Aware and Hijack This though. Here's a few pics of the outcome.

On Sunday my laptop (running windows XP Home Edition) froze up and when I rebooted discovered EVERY file was having LOST CLUSTER problems. When I finally was able to get into windows most major functions such as IE 6.0 browser and Outlook Express would not work properly. I was able to run a registry fix program I had and it 'corrected' over 330 errors in the registry. However, it still has not corrected my problem.

I use Earthlink and I contacted them this morning and they suggested I run SFC /SCANNOW and re-install IE. However, I get the following error:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been such down to prevent damage to your computer

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

Begin Dump of Physical Memory"

Please can any one help me. I am not sure what happened but now most systems are not working. It keeps on rebooting into a dyagnostic mode where it checks lost clusters and If I manage to bypass this and get into windows desktop, it comes up with all sorts of DLL errors being corrupted and that I should run CHKDSK (which I did but then it hangs the machine and the starts the whole cycle again)....

I am not too familiar with the REGISTRY and I need some help.

Thanks.

I now get the following errors:

Answer:Major problems with computer. Cant erase known problems

Hello amdamd and welcome to TSF,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the b... Read more

Question: major problems

First of all I have a compaq presario s5000cl. This is XP windows home edition. It all started with the computer not taking any software or download all together. The machine would restart all the time now I cannot get the desktop to come up and tried system recovery, f8 and even put the system recovery disks in. On the 3rd disk I would get a blue screen that says that if it continued harm would come to the computer and this 0X000000D1 (OXO1C61619,OXOOOOOOO2,OXOOOOOOOO,OXO1C61619). And sometimes in would just shutdown by itself too.

Answer:major problems

those are memory locations...which means that there really is a HUGE problem...are you talking about QuickRestore from compaq?

Ok....here's the situation:

A few weeks ago I started getting Windows Explorer.exe errors - tried to do a restore, but it wont let me - doesnt matter what day I pick, it wont go back. I also cant create a restore point - prior to 11 May - this wasnt a problem as I had to do a system restore and it went off without a hitch.

Called Tech support - did a chkdsk /f ; chkdsk /r; Ran sfc /scannow - you name it I've ran it - all saying nothings wrong. Included in this is running AVG, CW Shredder, Spyware Doctor, Adaware, SpywareGuard - EVERY program you can think of I've ran - and nothing comes up wrong yet I keep getting this error.

Dell Tech support says I have to blow the harddrive and reinstall everything all over again (WHICH I dont want to do for obvious reasons).

Can anyone else help me figure out what in the world went wrong from 11 May until now? No bios have been changed that I"m aware of...nor registry keys...so I"m baffled as to what happened.

Thanks,
Deb

Now when i try it without the graphics card instead of blue screen it goes to black screen and hangs. I have tried every single thing possible with microsoft being no help along with ati and gateway. my system specs are:

1000mhz p3
320 sdram
Radeon 8500 Le
7200 40 gig hd (set as master) has nothing on it
7200 80 gig hd

My pc was built for win me but it really sucks and I hate it. I had win xp on this computer before and it installed fine without a problem why all the sudden would it give errors trying to reinstall it. Im just so fed up with this im about to throw my pc away. Can anyone help me with this problem Because I have tried everything possible. Thanks

Hello! My computer is infected so badly that it:1. Keeps re-generating and running tons of adware whenever I'm online - even AFTER I have used Ad-Aware, Spybot and MS AntiSpyware, as well as Symantec and Avast, to delete everything suspicous. (I runs scans in both regular and sfe modes).2. Even worse, my computer keeps spontaneously re-booting itself every few minutes!!Even my friend "The IT guy", using all the scans and Regedit, cannot fix it.My computer is now almost useless for anything unless I'm running in safe mode (and I can't use the internet or print any documents when I'm in safe mode)This is one nasty little problem that obviusly has hidden itself very, very well.PLEASE HELP!! Answer:HJT Log - Major Problems!

Hello Eric331 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. The first thing we need to do is update the operating system.Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Windows Update site and install Service Pack 2. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. After all of the updates have been performed post a new HijackThis log back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.Cheers.OT

Question: Major Problems

I am new to the forum and I really need help. I have had something lurking in my registry files for a month and every time I try to eradicate the source files, things get better for a little bit but then symptoms keep coming back. I have run Spyware, CW Shredder, Ad-Aware, whatever I could get my hands on, in an attempt to scrub this stuff out.

On Friday of last week, a seemingly new problem occured - something took over my desktop with a black window in the middle with an ominous warning/sales pitch for some new anti-virus product. I was unable to remove this and went to the source file, removed that, and now my entire desktop is a white blank.

I know enough to seek help when I am beat and I also knoow that if I continue to delete files in an effort to remove this junk, I will erase something important.

I have downloaded hijack-this and when I run the scan it collects a lot of data but I really have no idea what I am looking at -- what can be safely deleted and what needs to be left alone. Needless to say, I need help.

Answer:Major Problems

Hi Cboink,

It is always a good idea to start with the Cleanup Tutorial HERE:
READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan and Virus Removal

I realize that you have done some of these steps already, but humor us and run through the tutorial. Follow the instructions CAREFULLY.

Please note the steps that you are able to complete and the ones that give you problems. Note that you need to be in Safe Mode with System Restore OFF (if you have it - you didn't give OS) and have the Viewing of Hidden Files ENABLED as per the instructions in the link. Make sure to do the Online Scans.

Post back and let us know how you fared & we'll go from there! I'll check back when I get a chance.

Best luck

Print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip and unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU).

Run the program and click the Web button located on the top right corner.

Copy and paste the below web address into the address bar of the Download script window:

http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu

Checkmark the following boxes:
Use settings specified in script for the above option.
Show log after script ends.
Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.

When it finishes running, click the Save button for a copy of the log. Post the log created by the script when you have completed the fix.

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, ... Read more

Question: Major Problems

The other day I tried to install an auto shutdown freeware program however it didn't work, and ever since I've been having serious problems with my PC. I can't remember what program it was but afterwards when I rebooted my PC, i got the blue screen and had to restart again, it was fine, however since then, the following problems have occurred.

Slow Internet (from 300kb/s to 15-60kb/s)
I can't restore my system to an older date, it won't let me get past the final confirmation screen, I press 'Next' and it reacts like nothings been pressed
I get Google redirects to other sites (which I see is quite popular)

Ok, so I looked elsewhere and they recommended Malware-Bytes and ComboFix. I go to Google, type in Malware-Bytes and everything relevant to it causes Firefox to shut down, the same with IE. So I found a direct link to that and ComboFix, however when I click the .exe, it loads for a bit and nothing happens. I go to TaskManager and they're both in the running processes, however both are stuck at 2,720 K. It looks as if what ever is in my PC doesn't want me to fix it!

Only option other than this would be a complete re-installation of Windows, which really isn't what I want to be doing! Please help!

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.

TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Let 's try a couple of scans. After you do both, run a fresh HJT log and post it.

Download Ewido Security SuiteInstall Ewido Security Suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed) Click Scanner
Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option: "Perform action on all infections"
Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop. Post that in your next reply along with any other logs requested.

I posted something a while back about having problems w/ my defrag and search. I could live without those things, but now my microsoft mouse is completely @#%@(#*$'ed up. I tried to access my mouse seetings, and received this error:http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m41/mon...55321/mouse.jpgI tried re-installing the mouse software, but that didn't seem to work, and actually screwed up my mouse even more. Now my scroll wheel scrolls about 50 lines in a single click, meaning i'm down to the bottom of the BC forum list in like 3 clicks of the wheel.I have a strong feeling that whatever is causing the malfunction in my mouse is causing the malfunction of the defrag/search features, or vice-versa.PLEEEEEEEEEEEEASE help?

Answer:Now Major Problems...

The error seems to be with main.cpl which refers to your mouse and keyboard according to this:http://www.wilsonmar.com/1wincpl.htmI see you have Limewire installed. BINGO! I would put next month's rent on a bet that this is the reason you are having issues. I would bet that you are badly infected. Care to take that bet with me?

Hi Bald Guy,

It looks like you've pretty much exhausted the Tutorial's options.

Please go ahead and send us a HijackThis Log. Make sure to follow the instructions below:

Note that your HijackThis should be up-to-date (v1.98.2) and MUST be extracted to its own safe folder - C:\Program Files\HijackThis!

If you need a Fresh Download of HJT, get it HERE: HijackThis 1.98.2

Also note that, before you scan, you MUST close all running programs including your web browser, e-mail and items in the system tray.

Please save your HJT Log as a .txt file and attach it via the "Manage Attachments" tool in the Additional Options section when you post.

Send us a log and we'll go from there I'll try to check back when I get a chance. Note that I have a lot of threads ahead of yours and very little free time these days. Please be patient Our resident expert Chaslang will be back in a day or so and we'll be able to get caught up!

Question: Major Problems!

While trying to clean up some spyware it seems that some Windows XP files are now either missing or corrupted??

Starting after system was started (in error) in diagnostic mode....then somehow almost all 'services' were disabled, but we were not aware until we ran into a problem trying to 'uninstall' Norton Internet Security 2005. Uninstall would not complete, because of "disabled" services.

Long story short, we can no longer reinstall or uninstall Norton....can't do any search, (when you type Start: Search, the next screen is blank).
Cannot load or do a System Restore, the program never opens.

and on and on.....

What can we do to fix whatever has gone wrong with Windows!

Many thanks.....I'm lost to figure this out!!

Go to start, click Run, type cmd. Type sfc/scannow. Have your windows XP CD at the ready.

Question: Major Xp Problems!

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum. I recently bought an emachines w2040, second hand. When I got the system home and booted it up I found it infected with many trojans, spy/adware, and viruses. I was unable to install norton, which is my preferred virus defense, so I used a combo of trojan hunter, hijack this, and help from the web in getting rid of most of them. I dont have any running in the back ground anymore, and none reinstalling themselves at start up. I hate being without some type of defense, so I installed Mcafee., but I am unable to update it. It will download all the new virus deff, but hangs up when it get to scan.dat. Also When I click on windows update, I get a blank page. I downloaded the windows xp-2000 script 56 kb91734 4-x86-enu.exe, but it tells me that the software has not passed windows logo testing, and then it says INF install failure. Its the same when I tried installing windows xp service pack 2. Then it said setup could not find file specified. Internet Explorer is so screwed up that most of the sites you have to go to wont display at all, I get a cannot find server page. Iam having to use nestscape mozilla, which I dont really like. Also most programs I download from the internet and try to install , hang up at installation, like yahoo messenger, and bearshare bro. I am at a loss as to what to do. I ordered the restore CD from emachines, but If its possible to fix it without using that, I want to try. So if anyone has any suggestions, or so... Read more

Welcome to Bleeping Computer! I was unable to install norton,Antivirus software usually does not install or update properly on an infected machine. If you delete (or 'fix') the wrong entry your computer will no longer work correctly or perhaps not even boot.I ordered the restore CD from emachinesExcellent idea, because you need them at this point. Your computer appears to be so messed up the best thing to do is to 'scrub' it and reinstall Windows. I do not know if your computer has a floppy drive or not, because what I am about to tell you is easier to do with a floppy drive:You can run Killdisk to delete everything including any infections. This is a free progam and can be downloaded HERE. Put the program on a floppy disk or a CD.Then run a DOS disk, such as a Windows 98 start up disk, when the computer boots to DOS, type "C:" (without the quotes), push ENTER. Then type "fdisk" (without the quotes), push ENTER, then just push ENTER at each selection that you are prompted to make (in other words, just accept all defaults). You can download what you need HERE.Then reboot with your XP CD in the cd drive and reinstall Windows, being sure to choose "... Read more

Question: Major Problems!!

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the right area for this post so just tell me if it isn't .

Okay, today I decided to defragment my hard drive for the first time, so I selected it and let it do its thing while I went to watch TV.

I came back after a while ti find it was stuck in a boot loop where it would say "Windows apologizes etc.. and provide me with the options, start windows normally, safe mode, last known good configuration. None of these work it just goes back to the boot screen and starts again . So I inserted the Windows XP CD and attempted to run a chkdsk /p and /r on it. However when I enter the recovery console and it provides me with only one drive in the windows installation options which is

E:\MININT

I am pretty sure this is not my hard drive and I ran a chkdsk on it anyway and it did nothing.

Anyway, right now I really do not want to have to reinstall Windows unless I can get a fair few of the files I had on the HDD off there.

Please help me

Thanks in advance,

Raziel-Zero

Can you get into the BIOS or setup screen? If so you can find out if your HD is being found. If it can't find your HD either it has somehow come unplugged or it has died completely.

I need to describe so that the whole situation is understood.1. 3 days ago I noticed images on web pages were displaying with warped colors/dis-configured. Half hour later and websites were displaying completely screwed up (coding would display over top of what you are supposed to see). 1 out of 3 refreshes would display it normally. Now most of the time I get a "content encoding error" on almost everything.2. We have a wireless connection, with 2 computers connected, but only my laptop (this computer is using the wireless). I have an almost brand new Sony Vaio 1.5ghz P4 running XP Home Ed. and I'm encountering some major problems. I use it mainly as a gaming/internet PC but I'm experiencing tremendous slowdown in games (even older ones that ran fine on my old Pentium 2) and even in my desktop. I don't know what the problem is, I deleted as many files as I possibly could thinking that it might have to do with my hard drive (60 gig) being too crammed or something, but that didnt work. Right now I'm at a loss, Im wondering if there is a way to just rebbot my computer into factory settings and start over, because I think thats the only solution. I understand teh consequences of that, buT I've made CD backups of any important files and documenst that I will need. If there is a way to "restart" my computer for good, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me how to do so, or any other ideas on making my computer run as it should.

Thanks

Answer:some please help me, major problems

Did it run how you like it when you first got the computer?

Do you have a copy of XP Home, or did it come preinstalled?

Do you have EVERYTHING your going to want to keep backed up and in good condition.... might want to go through a quick check of your backup CD's to make sure the files are up to date and such.

If you can answer yes to all three of these we can talk you through wiping your hard drive and reinstalling... it's probably the most extreme method of fixing it, considering you'll have to go back and reinstall all the programs you like... get the computer how you like, not to mention the time it takes to wipe the Hard drive and Reinstall Windows. But it will probably be easier than going through a step by step of cleaning out extra files and running optimization software. It's up to you... there are benefits to both.

Question: Major Problems!

I currently am having major problems with my Compaq Presario 5000 series desktop.

If I try to play a movie or listen to music, it screws up after about 15-20 seconds and basically locks up. The video and/or sound become choppy and load extremely slow. It happens when I try to load games in the same way.

Does anyone know what could be the problem and know a possible solution?

PLEASE help, I'm no genius when it comes to computer problems. Sorry if this is the wrong board, this one fit the most.

Question: No Major Problems

Dear Computer Helper,

The only problem I seem to have now is that when I try to open a Word document, it Word icon will come up on my task bar as if the document has opened but the document won't open. I eventually just force the program to end and try again. This problem happens once in a while. On my logs, it looks like I might have done something wrong with Root Repeal, but I'm not sure. My MGtools log is in the next message.

Thanks,

Question: Major problems.

Well as the title implies guys, I've got some major problems.

It started out with a majorly slow internet connection, so I thought, I'll see what my computer is connecting to, downloaded CurrPorts to see what's going on, turns out explorer.exe is connecting hundreds of times to what appears to be an advertising website. I guess that's the cause of that.

I try and figure out what it is, and I remember the other day my USB seems to have some problems, it wouldn't open whenever I tried to see the contents but rather looked as if it was executing instead of opening like it should.

Eventually I do get it to open, by killing explorer.exe then reopening it, there's a program called open.exe on the usb along with an autorun.inf I never put there, I format the usb, then unplug and replug it back it, those two things come back again, so now it appears that whatever I had on the usb has gone onto the computers I've plugged the usbs into... So that'd be 2 infected, the desktop and my laptop.

Now I seem to have some virus that Malwarebytes doesn't pick up, and a super slow internet connection... On top of that, FireFox randomly connects to a random advertising site...

I'm also extremely worried that whatever is connecting to this weird site is sending all manner of personal information...

So guys, I'm in dire need of help, please!

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Answer:Major problems.

Greetings,Let's start by blocking some advertising. Download the following: MVPS.org Host FileOnce downloaded, extract the contents to the desktop. Contained in the hosts folder will be a file called mvps.bat. Execute the file to install it.This will add several thousand entries into your host file blocking access to those websites.Next, download Cleanup!. This handy little program will empty most of the temp files on the drive. What kind of antivirus do you run?

Question: MAJOR Pc problems

Hi,

I use a Phillips freevents desktop. When I try to start up my pc i get a black screen with a message saying 'disk boot failure, insert system disk' so I insert my system disk and it gives me one option, system recovery. I do that and everytime I do it, it stops and a blue screen comes up saying 'KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR' and then all other stuff. Could you please help me solve this?

Thanks.

Note: I am currently using my laptop.

You may have defective memory or your hard drive may have failed. If you have any data you cherish, you may be able to salvage by taking the drive out, attach it in place of a CD drive on a working pc.

Welcome! to MajorGeeks.com!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given further down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in Safe Mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs.

Question: major problems

I got the horrid "config updates: 3 of 3 0%" problem, and so I wanted to reinstall windows vista 32 bit, after setting boot device priority to cd/dvd rom, I went through the "windows loading files" thing, then the standard windows loading bar appeared, and I get BSOD.. I can get the tech data form it if anyone needs it, but at this point, I can't even reinstall vista.. safe mode doesnt work, nor does "last known good config" So Im kinda screwed. Thanks to anyone that can help.

Answer:major problems

What update 3 of 3 0% issue? I have updated several PC's and i have not heard of this issue with Vista?

My guess is that you got your hands on a copy of SP1 that is NOT from Microsoft. Since they have not put it out. So my guess would be that this file has corrupted your system.

What does the BSOD say? There should be a Stop code and a line that is in all Caps that says something. Give us that info.

Question: Major Problems

My computer is destroyed. Its getting worse and worse. I must have some sort of malware/spyware/virus or some combo of all or other things.

I started out using Spybot for years. I also had McAfee on my computer. But something recently happened that has made my computer worse and spybot wasn't detecting. I then downloaded XoftSpySE because I read it was the best. I ran it and it must have found 50 or so problems. I fixed them, and then still had problems, I'd have some IE popups and would get a message from McAfee saying that "Windows\Fonts\Services.exe" was trying to change my registry. I'd click on block naturally. So i'd restart my computer in safe mode and re-run XoftSpySE and would have a large number or problems as well. I'd clean them with the program, restart my computer in regular mode. More of the same problems, I also started encountering news problems with having my ms-dos prompt pop-up saying things like Win32 or something either in the prompt or on the window.

So I also tried using the program that came with XoftSpySE called RegCure registry cleaner. I again re-booted in safe mode. First I ran XoftSpySE again and fixed everything. Then I ran RegCure right after that. It founds something like over 1,100 issues. Fixed them using the program.

Restarted again in normal mode. Had issues again. But this time when the computer came on, I got an error message saying something like couldn't find some sort of... Read more

Question: Major Problems

Hi,

I almost gave up on computers entirely. I have spent days and weeks researching why my computers are not working properly and I can't figure it out. I have two computers, one desktop and one laptop. Both are running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. They are both running Internet Explorer 7. They are both having similar problems.

My desktop:
In internet explorer flash doesn't work. It is not just the new way to embed flash for IE 7 because no flash site will work (including Adobe's). SWF's dragged and dropped into the browser will not play either. Everything works fine in Firefox so it is not the way that flash is installed (however, I have tried uninstalling it using adobe's uninstaller and then reinstalling it with the standalone installer). Nothing seems to work.

My Laptop:
Strange, this one is; however, I will focus on the IE problems here and will post the other problems in another category. I first noticed the problem when I tried to log into yahoo. It would go to the logging in page and then not do anything. I eventually found out that any javascript, on any page, would not work. I went into internet options and enabled active script and anything else that looked like it may help, yet it didn't. I then noticed that it wouldn't print when I pressed ctrl+p. The print window doesn't even come up (it doesn't do anything). okay i'm having major problems with my cd-roms in windows xp pro. i put in a stick of 512 ram awhile ago and it wasen't compatable with my motherboard. so in the end i took out the stick of ram that doesn't work. after all the ram problems, the net result was that my cd-roms disappeared. they dont' appear in my computer anymore and i can't seem to get them detected in bios when they detect the master and slave. i swapped cd-rw's with my sis to see if that could help something get detected and it hasen't. i'm tried googling for solutions but the ones i tried haven't worked. has anyone got ne suggestions? i've checked for all loose cables. in device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, i have primary and secondary IDE controllers, and SiS PCI IDE controllers. nothing there is flagged

Answer:major cd-rom problems

Not detected in even in bios screen means bios/controller communicating probs
Short CMOS. unplug from wall, wait at least one hour, replug, boot into bios, set failsafe defaults.
That failing I would reflash the bios.
You could also try uninstalling from Dev Manager, reinstalling chipset drivers from mobo CD - RAM probs may have coruupted things

I just got this computer, it isn't new, and there are all kinds of problems. I am running windows xp home, service pack 1, i have run ad aware, spybot, avg antivirus microsoft antispyware, there were over 30 viruses and trojans through avg, i got rid of what i could with all these programs, i also ran cw shredder and it found one instance and got rid of it, but microsoft antispyware found 3 signatures of it and got rid of them. Something keeps trying to reset my internet security settings. I am in safe mode because in regular mode i keep getting pop ups and then the computer freezees. I had media pass in my running process about 20 times, i think i might have gotten rid of that but not too sure. Please help. Here is my hijack this log.

Question: Major PC problems!

I need to retreive/reset my ip address as I am having a problem with my TCP/IP. I cannot access the internet through my broadband connection. a popup message saying "limited or no connectivity" appears. Also my XP firewall is OFF and I cant access it to turn it back ON due to a problem with "ICP". I cant even establish a new connection. The "Networking" tab in Network Connection settings is GONE!
I have tried MS Dos commands but my ip address/subnet mask/gateway info dont show, when I retry this the Dos screen fills with thousands of letter "H"..??
I uninstalled the network card the used my restore cd roms but nothing happened so I created a restore point to undo the uninstall. I have ran McAfee, Spysweeper, NoAdware, Adaware and everything else in my pc protection arsenal but no related treats were detected.
I have tried everything that I am capable of doing and I am at a loss what to do!
Please, I appreciate any advice you have for me.

Question: XP Major problems

I have XP installed on my pc. Something happened and it said that a disk needed to be scanned. After scanning, it shut down and then started up again, and again etc. It kept doing this and then a message flashed on the screen that said something about Microsoft being sorryand that this had been a major problem that had happened but it went away to quick for me to read it. Another one came up saying that a report would be sent to Microsoft but it had wiped out my dialup connection. I had to call my ISP to get reconnected because I couldn't find where I had them written down. Once I got connected the message was gone. I was going to unistall it and then re=install but it wouldn't let me. The automatic update just popped up with updates but I don't know if this will solve my problem or not. I tried going to their support page but it is sooo dark I haven't the foggiest where to look and click. I will be calling them but I was just wondering if this happened to anyone else. Do you think I should try uninstalling again? I've been on the phone with them just trying to get my modem to work and that was a 45min. waste. They couldn't help me saying that all pc's are different but I finally found out how to do it by looking in the archives. It was running just fine and all the software that I installed was suppose to be XP compatiable. ANY suggestions would be appreciatedd.

Check the website for the Hard Drive Manufacturer of the drive you have in your PC!

Some of them have diagnostic programs you can download and run even from a bootable floppy disk.

Western Digital's is called "Data Lifeguard"

If the computer is rebooting when Windows starts to load, it's a good possibility that the Hard Drive is hosed!

Good Luck!

Hiya, I came here cos Im a bit desperate for help, I kind of know my way around a computer but Im waay out of my depth here and was wondering if anyone could help:

Whenever I start my PC, 90 percent of the time it loads to the desktop but explorer.exe wont run. If I start Task Manager and run it from there, for the first few minutes an error pops up saying I don't have admin rights to access the file, but then later on it runs ok. But then, when it does load, only the volume control will load on the start bar, and if I try to access anything, (internet etc.) it doesnt work at all. Also my Folder Options in the Control Panel have disappeared, and Ive tried many ways to get it back, such as running gpedit, and it also wont let me access the registry, saying I dont have admin rights, even though I am the only user of the PC, and I have full admin rights. Sometimes it won't load at all, just booting to a black screen with the pointer stuck in the middle, and I have to restart it to get it to do anything.

If I run the computer in safe mode, the explorer bar has a 50/50 chance of loading on startup, and I still have the same problems. I ran Webroot Spy Sweeper, which picked a few spy cookies and whatnot, but nothing significant, but it seems to be getting progressively worse every time I restart the PC.

The PC also refuses to boot the XP startup disk, cos I wanted to Repair Windows to see if that would fix the problem, and also trying to reset to default with BIOS and u... Read more

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Okay now we need to use a new tool.

So here's the best summary I can put together of my problem and its history!

1. Currently the toolbars are gone (and don't come back with alt), you can not copy and paste anything, right clicking does not bring up any menus, and you cannot download anything (from any web links or email attachments). The rest of the computer is working just fine.

2. It started because I was trying to download flashplayer, but it never worked so I uninstalled IE7, but IE6 no longer worked properly (basically nonfunctional). When I reinstalled IE7 it came back as described above. Now when I try to uninstall IE7 it nears the end and comes up with an error "Setup cannot copy the file ieakmmc.chm"

3. I tried microsoft's advice to fix the lack of toolbars, but that did nothing. LiveOneCare says the computer is clean. I would do a hijackthis log, but I can't download anything!

In searching websites and posts I haven't found anything helpful. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Question: Major SP2 Problems

Hey folks:

CPU-P4 2.88 Ghz 480Mb Ram
MB Manufacturer - Micro-Star
OS - XP SP1

On 10/11 Installed SP2 from Microsoft Site per their update prompt & instructions; Machine would not even boot in SAFE mode.

Called retailer that put together my PC; they said they were receiving at least 4-5 calls per day. Only fix is to reinstall (NOT REPAIR) XP.

Question: Is it now safe for me to install SP2? Note: I did not and will not lose any data. However, did lose all program settings so I had to reinstall, bookmarks, shortcuts, etc., and I do not want to go through that again.

Opinion: I've read some posts and seen different opinions re: Microsoft culpability. I look at it like this: One time I bought my niece a radio-controlled race car. It stopped working and could not be fixed after about 30 min. I brought it back to the retailer and they replaced it. This was an annoyance. After installing SP2 my system would not boot; I had to reinstall XP and all programs. Probably lost about 4-5 hours of work time, not to mention the utter frustration. Microsoft has enough resources to put out the highest quality products. But they do not do it--they do not even come close. That is disgraceful. Twice in my 20 year relationship with PCs, I'VE HAD TO TALK MICROSOFT THROUGH TECH SUPPORT PROBLEMS WITH WORD. I am not kidding. And, judging from the folks I've come across on this site, I am NOT really technically proficient, or even close. Microsoft makes its choices, and a LOT ... Read more

Question: Major Problems!

Hello everyone!
I have some serious issues with my pc and I hope you can help. It's an Emachine, has Windows XP, and up until recently was "protected" by McAfee which was a service provided by my ISP. I switched over to your free version of AVG a few days ago and I also use Ad-Aware, SpyBot S&D, a-Squared, CCleaner, and Malawarebytes' Anti-Malware. The trouble is that every new program I run finds more problems that can't be repaired. In spite of being cautious, I now have the Backdoor.IRCBot (thanks to my teenager), Trojan.Win32.Qhost, Virtumonde, and some other "nasties". I would be forever grateful if you could help me clean up this mess. (I was also wondering if doing a Full System Restore from discs would eliminate all of my problems?)
Thank you!

Question: Major problems

Hey everyone. Well I'm trying to rid my brother's computer of malware but it's not looking so good. I followed the removal instructions as much as I could. In safe mode I ran all of the scans except the online virus scans. I tried those in both normal mode and in safe mode with networking, but both IE and firefox get closed (probably by whatever virus) before the scan is complete, and most of the time before it even gets started. So yeah, he basically let it get so bad before he asked for help that when I sat down to look at it, something had disabled his windows firewall and of course he had no other firewall running. I guess what I'm asking is there any advice you can give me? Is this even worth trying to fix or am I gonna have to completely restore windows?

and here

I think I have narrowed it down to the fact I had 2000 on the hard drive first, even with 2000 I would get \winnt\system32\config\..but it would always start after by going to last good config....I thought that It would fix after installing xp but it's worse after installing xp. I can't find it now but I just read an article that said I would need to install 2000 in a partition and then transfer the necessary files... I can get to windows if I wait about 30 minutes to boot it up again...
I really need help.... thank you ..anyone.

I don't even know if this will go through. First of all when I go to any of my e-mail sights; when I go to open and e-mail, I get nothing at all. Can't read any of it.

Number #2 I go to google or yahoo, and say I want to look at images of jeff gordon, (race car driver). The page will open up but there is no pictures on the screen the top is there and the bottom of the page is right under the top of page.

Number#3 when I go to play media player it stops and says internal error. Which now effects my viewing of any video's on the internet.

Answer:Have major problems!

Have you tried a system restore, to a point that was before the problem started?
You may have to try several times, to different dates, before one takes. That's the way it was for me, when I had to do it before.

Also run any anti-virus you have, and adware & spyware software you have.
I hope you don't have to reinstall Windows, but it sounds like it could come to that, if nothing else works.
Good luck!

Question: Major Problems

Hello...

Here's my problem...Running Win 2k...everything had been fine until yesterday...Now I am unable to use the mouse effectively...sometimes it freezes, sometimes disappears, but usually, it is outta control...it moves where it wants to, opens windows, menus, etc etc...I'm pretty sure its a virus of some kind, but I am unable to pinpoint it...I have McAfee Pro virus protection...the one time I was able to scan the disk it came up with one virus(unfortunately I didn't write it down)..I think it was a worm of some kind....anyway, I deleted the file(I think it was in the winn/sys32 directory) and thought all would be well...wrong! Still had the same problems...I tried to reinstall win 2k from an upgrade CD I had, but this hasn't helped either...Also tried starting in Safe mode, but I still get the same freezes and problems with mouse... Also tried starting up with the last good configuration option, but no luck...I have been unable to get back to McAfee to scan again with these mouse problems...in addition to the mouse problem, my Zone Alarm program has been alerting me during start up that a program called: vouvkdb.exe would like to access the Internet... I always deny the access(that is, when I can get the mouse to work). Also, a couple of times since the problems began, I have also received a windows 200 error code = 87 and other explorer.exe dialog boxes...So here I am a thousand restarts, shutdowns and safe modes later...

Question: Major pc problems

Hello,
My cousin is having some major problems with her computer and I am trying to help but I am at a loss. Her husband tried to update her IE to version 8. He was having problems and then unfortunately decided to try to fix things himself. He apparently deleted or uninstalled some programs and now she cannot find her D drive and we cannot install her external drive at this time. We tried to go through the regedit and fix the missing d drive problem but we could only get so far and then it started giving her errors yet again. Is there anything else we can possibly do without having to do a whole reinstall of windows xp? I am thinking that her husband deleted some kind of system files and she cant even check the system files because she does not have the XP disc. Help please if possible. Any advice will be great!

I have had several small problems with my computer- WMP not playing dvds (plays cds fine) being the most noticeable one. I have had the problem for a while, but didn't think about it much. Yesterday I went to the device manager to see if there was a driver update and my device manager comes up blank. I looked for solutions and decided to run Microsoft security essentials only to find it isn't updating. I tried a restore, and now I'm having problems with other programs. Had to reinstall chrome. Ran HJT and it is a MESS. The big thing is I don't know how long this has been going on because everything appears to be working fine except dvd playback on WMP. Help - please and thank you!

Hi there. I recently got windows xp professional and wanted to upgrade my XP home to that so I may use home edition on a second comp. I went through the whole upgrade and upon rebooting when it was finished I got a quick flash (less than a second) of a BSOD stop error and then my system restarted. It would do that constantly and would not load XP which was a bummer cause that meant formatting.

Anyhow I tried to get it to stop at the BSOD so i could write down the message but it goes too fast. I figured I would try to install on a clean 40 gig hard drive that I have only had around in case I needed extra space (it was not used or formatted). Anyhow I went to do a clean install on it and I kept getting an error at the beginning of the setup saying that the vga.sys file was corrupt. I was wonderin what the deal was because I just bought XP pro. I messed with it for a while and managed to get it to get past the vga.sys. a couple times it would hang on a serial port enumerator too....but I think these do not really matter. When I managed to get it to complete loading the drivers and all that jazz at the start, it began to copy the files. It got to 39% copying and then i got an error that a certain system file was missing. Restarted and tried installing again, sure enough another 39% error. I figured hmm maybe my cd rom is bad so I tossed another drive in and i managed to get it to 80% and got an error. I kept getting errors at various states in the progress bar but I did manag... Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Question: Major problems

Hi, I recently built a computer for a friend and now it is so messed up I can't even believe it. He asks me if I know about free virus programs and says he might have 1. So I go to and install AVG free when I see error messages popping up all over the screen. Several web pages were popping up as well and I can't access the task manager. And 1 error message counted down a timer until restart. I ran Adaware which he had installed and it found 100's of items. At the point I decided to follow the steps in the try before posting page. I was able to run most of them fine, however I could not get BitDefender to work. I used AVG and it found thousands of Viruses including some with the names of programs that I know run real programs! I quarantined them anyway and now some programs like CCleaner are not working. I tried several of the options in step 9 as well. So right now the computer is still in bad shape. Panda Scan for over 10,000 viruses so that log is a bit absurd and too big to attach. Most of the files found by panda were files with names like <RandomFileName>.t which I have never seen before. This computer is weeks old so maybe a fresh install is the best option? Well here are the logs I could get. Thanks for any help in advance.

Answer:Major problems

Hi, after several hours of trying, I got to use the Bitdefender Online Scan. I think it was there site and not my messed up PC. Anyway, here is the log. Also, what other information would be useful for you guys? I can tell you that most of the problems are from LimeWire.

Ok..I was sent here after investigation of my pc by the malware pros. I am running Windows XP and am having problems with several things. First off, I can not access the Windows Update site. It sends back an error 0x80072EFD. I have followed through with all the suggestions on the Windows website for correcting this error, but still nothing.

I am also having a problem with my Outlook Express. Some emails go through and some don't.

I got silly this morning and put in my XP Home Edition disk to try to repair things, and now..it seems I am worse off than I was.

Can anyone help me??

Answer:Some Major Problems

Is this an Windows XP CD or a recovery CD from the computer manufacturer? What exactly did you do when you put the disk in?

Question: Major Problems!

Someone gave me a tinyurl link today that lead to a page called encyclopedia dramatica. I exited about because I wasn't interested in what it was and now I keep getting security center alert trojan warnings!

I've tried using malwerebytes to get rid of anything on my system but after it scans to a certain point it says that my computer has damaged system files and I'm going to be logged off. Another thing that happens is a command prompt box opens up every now and then titled SPAM and it says "sent email to (namehere)@hotmail.com"

Please, please! I'm looking for any help whatsoever. I'm in a rush so I apologize if this goes against any of the rules or anything, I'm just looking for some help. I want my computer to be fixed!

Question: Major Problems

Hello, I'm trying to fix my sister's computer and would appreciate any help i can get. Her system is not even a year old yet running off of Windows XP. Ive installed Symantic Antivirus on it, although she's told me it stoped working a few weeks ago which could attribute to a few of the problems. I've also installed spybot and spywareblaster on her computer, but i doubt she updates those.

Her computer has multiple problems with it.

1. Occasionally when windows loads it will only show the wallpaper and the mouse, no toolbar, no icons. When this happens i can still access Task Manager and run programs using File - New Task. I was able to load Microsoft Word with no problem, however running Internet Explorer caused it to restart. Not a normal restart, it just dies and starts back up. I found similar instances online where a registry called Shellfix would help with the no tollbar and no icons and was able to run it, but i dont think it worked.

2. When Windows does load the icons and toolbar it will slow to a crawl. Looking at the system resources it is completely boged down, and trying to do ANYTHING will cause it to restart again. Someone on another forum someone had luck with changing their powersupply to fix that, but i'd like to wait on having to buy more hardware if possible.

3. I figured i'd start it in safe mode and see what i could do, but partially through it loading it just freezes. The only way i could get it to work again is to pull th... Read more

try this first then afterwards post the HJT LOG

if the entries are NOT in regedit then don't worry it jsut means it is something else causing it sp post back and we'll have another think

Press CTRL + ALT +DEL to start Task Manager.

Click the Applications tab and then click the new task button.

Type regedit.exe into the box when it pops up and press ok.

This is going to start registry editor.
Navigate to this key: (The registry left pane is a tree just like Windows Explorer is a tree. Clicking the + in front of each successive key will open the branch until you reach the final destination.)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe

Right click on explorer.exe in the left pane and click on Delete from the menu.

Then go down to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\Iexplore.exe

Highlight Iexplore.exe in the left pane and look in the right pane for this Value:

Debugger

Right click on Debugger in the right pane and click Delete from the menu.

Close the registry.

Back in task manager, click the New Task Button again.

Type Explorer.exe and click ok.

See if this does the trick. Then do post a hijackthis log. I suspect we'll have some more to do.

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and ... Read more

Question: major problems

Okay, here's the deal:

A few days ago my desktop was changed into a PSguard one, asking me to install some crappy piece of 'spyware remover' (I didn't). Also my computers search function suddenly got removed, (blank space where the search text box used to be) and I cant change my desktop wallpaper or anything because those tabs are now gone.

I followed all the sticky's and ran dozens of spyware/trojan programs etc. etc, and now my desktop is plain white - but I still can't change it, and the other things are still disabled. I have run Ad aware (and other programs) a number of times now and it comes up clean.

Here is my hijackthis log:

Edit by bjgarrick: Unrequested, Inline HJT log removed!

Any help? thanks, this is really bothering me, and I've spent a great deal of time trying to fix this with no luck.

Answer:major problems

There are no signs of you running the online scans, go back and complete the READ ME.

Please follow standard cleanup procedures as given below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

Download HijackThis 1.99.1

Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

Run HijackThis and save your log file.

Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

Question: Major problems

Hi guys, trying to resolve a pretty annoying issue, basically i was having a BSOD problem followed by a complete no POST failure, so i rebuilt with a new case, an MSI 770 C45 mobo, Phenom 2 X4 965BE, 2GB Corsair 1333mhz RAM, and a brand new GTS250 as replacement for what i thought was a failing 9800GTX+, anyway even with my new build i'm still getting no POST and no signal on my 32 inch Philips LCD TV, i have tried everything and its depressing me...oh i'm still using my old 320gig hitachi deskstar SATA HDD and a cheapy 650w PSU i got from ebuyer.com. Thanks in advance for any help guys

Answer:Major problems

Doh, I almost forgot to mention this as I know it will probably help, but my current PSU is an Atrix 650w, I looked at the side of the PSU earlier and I noticed the 2 12v rails only total 29A combined, now I read somewhere that even the Geforce 8 series graphics cards require 30A to run, also I read somewhere else about this guy who had EXACTLY my problem to the letter, he changed the PSU and the problem disappeared.

Question: Major Problems...

This should probably be in the forum for HJT logs, but my computer won't let me click that link...so I have to post lit here. I'm sorry for that.

I have a RAT or some kind of virus that took over my computer, and when I view webpages it picks out certain words i.e. "you", "download", "spyware", "music", "help", and tons of others and directs them all to a search engine called clicksearchclick.com... It's really irratating.

I don't know much about computers.
I use Xoftspy for virus protection, and every time I run it, this file comes up.
It's by "Corrupted Lite" and it's found at "software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\service host", but I don't have a clue as to what that means. I just know that ever time I "delete" it, it's still there.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Please move hijackthis to it's own folder on C: (C:\HJT)

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

If you have a highspeed connection please Run an online virus scan from TrendMicro Please select the ?autoclean? option when prompted to do so.

Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Download DelDomains.inf
Right-click and select..... Save Target As

To use: Right-click and select....... Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"

Download Winsock2Fix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it?s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then create a new restore point.
