Pinning Shortcuts to Taskbar

Question: Pinning Shortcuts to Taskbar

How do I pin a shortcut to the task bar? I have a shortcut on my desktop that I frequently use, and I want it to be on the task bar - it is the address to a documents file that I use all the time. When I drag and drop, it won't stick there.

thanks,
carl

Preferred Solution: Pinning Shortcuts to Taskbar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Pinning Shortcuts to Taskbar

Hello Carl,

If you right click on the shortcut, does it have a "Pin to Taskbar" option?

If not, could you post a screenshot of the properties page (right click) with the General tab showing?

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Hi:
I'm trying to pin a Gmail shortcut and a few forums shortcuts to the taskbar, but I'm not having any luck doing this.
I'm able to pin programs to the taskbar without a problem though so I'm wondering if somebody can tell me how this can be done in Win 7 Ultimate.

Answer:Pinning website shortcuts to the taskbar

It would show up if you right click the Internet Explorer icon

EDIT: The way to do this would simply be to save them as a favorite on the favorites bar and then drag them over the IE icon and drop them there

I installed Word 2013 onto a new computer some time ago. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Pinning has never worked. I can drag, I can right click and select pin, I can do whatever I want, but nothing appears and it just stays blank. Neither do recently opened items show up on a right click of the icon. Pinning/recent items works on everything else (e.g. Adobe, Explorer), including Outlook. I tried reinstalling but it still wouldn't work. I couldn't find much to go on so I gave up and have done without pinning. Recently I turned on "store and display recently opened items in the start menu and the taskbar" and suddenly I was given another clue as to what the issue is - Excel still shows nothing BUT in Word's recent items I'm getting *Adobe* files (see screenshot, file names removed for privacy): http://i.imgur.com/3wOOU60.png) I can pin adobe files to word's icon. I googled again and I still don't see anything about this but I'm just wondering if anyone has come across this and can help. Thanks in advance!

The following procedure works with Firefox, Chrome and IE, but I'd really like it to work for Maxthon.
At my job we use a web browser to access our helpdesk ticket system and I want to easily bring up a new ticket.
I can't use Firefox or Chrome, because the system only works in Trident, and I can't use IE because I hate it

First, I create a shortcut on my desktop...

After that, I'm able to right-click my browser icon and see the pinned shortcut on the menu...

The following shortcut is not behaving as I want it to.. it keeps pinning to start despite all my attempts to unpin it and recopy to the folder,
It makes no sense to me... they are all shortcuts to executable files. Why is windows handling some of them differently? Is there any way to fix this?

I have Win 7 64 and I have created a vbscript file to launch Windows Media Centre - the script tweaks the registry settings for WMC window size and position (so it always opens in the same position and size on my second montor) before shelling to WMC (which also includes command line swtches to open in the TV Guide).

The trouble is that I have created a shortcut to the vbscript file and put it into the start menu - but when I right click on it, it doesn't give me the option to pin it to the task bar. If, however, I edit target for the original WMC shortcut to point to the vbscript then I can pin it. Interestingly, when I do it this way, the Jump List on the pinned shortcut on the taskbar still retains the WMC Jump List which is great(although the Jump List doesn't appear to work on the Start Menu shortcut).

So the question is - is there any detailed information that someone can point me at to help me understand how the shortcuts, pinning and jump lists work? Specific questions are:

- How does Win 7 tell the difference between the short cut I created for the vbscript file and the "standard" shortcut for WMC?
- Why does the pin-to option not appear on the vbscript shortcut?
- Can I programmatically, or manually, add shortcuts to the "pinned" area on the task bar?
- What controls the Jump List and can it be customised?

Answer:Shortcuts, Pinning and Jump Lists - how do they work?

I've drawn a blank with these questions and not have any response to my post - does anybody think that I'll get more luck if I post it on one of the other forums?.

Windows 7 adding network drive shortcuts to taskar. I'm searching a similar way with XP Quick launch bar to add some network folders (which aren't mapped as drives) to taskbar.

When dragging to taskbar, there opens a window (Pinned/Recent/) which I understand means shortcut has now pinned. Now there are listed already several network shortcuts, but still these are not visible on taskbar. Where do these go and how to make these visible? It looks like it's a separate toolbar, where I can open already previously dragged shortcuts, but how to open it without dragging a new network shortcut to taskbar?http://www.sevenforums.com/ima...ilies/wink.gif

When dragging an application to tasbar, there isn't such a window and application shortcut is added without any question asked.
It seems like Windows 7 doesn't support dragging and creating network shares shortcuts directly onto taskabar or did I missed something essential?

Or does one has to install/restore previous XP quick launch bar for more flexibility?

Thanks!

Sergey Tkachenko has created quite the number of programs for Windows 7 and Windows 8 that tweak various functionalities. To name a few: Skip Metro to bypass the start screen on logon, Close Threshold to close Windows 8 apps comfortable or Taskbar Pinner to pin anything to the taskbar.

AutoPin Controller takes care of another issue that you may experience when using the Windows 8 operating system. Whenever you install software on Windows 8, shortcuts are added to the start screen of the operating system. This may be handy considering that the start screen is the new start menu of the operating system, but sometimes also inappropriate if you do not want a program to add one or multiple shortcuts to the start screen.

While you won?t see as many shortcuts as on the ?All Apps? page of the system, it may still be something that you do not desire, for instance if you prefer to have full control over what gets added where on the start screen.

Windows 8 offers no built-in option to block program installations from adding shortcuts to the start screen. That?s where AutoPin Controller for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro comes into play (you can?t install desktop applications on Windows RT).

While it does not provide you with a permanent on or off switch, it is still noteworthy because it is a first. You need to run the program and select the ?Lock Pint to start screen feature? to block any program from adding shortcuts to the system?s start screen. Once you have made ... Read more

Hi guys, I'm having a serious problem here. I wanted to add a folder to my windows explorer pinned folders so that I can right click on the windows explorer icon on the taskbar and have my popular folders right there. When I first setup windows 7, I did this by right clicking on the folders I wanted and clicking "Pin to Taskbar." Now, when I right click on folders, there is no such option. Even libraries only have the option to "Pin To Start Menu" which is strange because I had already pinned a library to the windows explorer icon on the task bar, which means that must have been an option before because I don't know how else I would do it. Can someone please explain to me how I can add more folders to the windows explorer icon? This is very frustrating

Not a huge issue more of just something i was curious about, why cant the "computer" desktop icon be pinned to the taskbar? I know that it is possible to pin the windows explorer but i want it to have the computer icon or at least the c drive icon.

Answer:Pinning to taskbar

I haven't found the reason why it's not possible to pin the Computer icon to the superbar. Maybe it's because it belongs in the explorer - who knows. You can pin it, though, if you really want to. There are some guides already posted around here somewhere. You basically create a shortcut, then point that shortcut to where the My Computer icon points to, then pin it to the superbar.

Question: Pinning To Taskbar

Hi All

I am new to windows 8 but have been finding my way around, One problem I am finding is that some websites I visit to "Pin To Taskbar" seem to only show a blank icon! No name but text but when you change the text it doesn't change on the icon? strange one particular site is the Nationwide bank page cannot seem to get an icon with a name on it?

Anybody got any ideas as to why this happens on only a few sites?

cheers!

Answer:Pinning To Taskbar

Hello Gatewaya, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It depends on what favicon is used by the site for what icon the URL shortcut will have on the middle of it's page icon. I have a icon for Nationwide bank for me, so you might see if deleting your temporary internet files and history and reloading the site may help.

If you like, you could also pin the site in the jump list of the browser's icon on the taskbar.

I know about the tutorial explaining what to do using the toolbar method, but I don't like the separator between the Recycle Bin and the rest of the icons. There is another recommended method of pinning the Recycle Bin by creating a shortcut and using shell:recyclebinfolder, but this stopped working. In fact, all my folder shortcuts I created and pinned to the taskbar by using explorer.exe in the target stopped working.

Is there any other working methods out there so that I can put the Recycle Bin icon anywhere I want on the taskbar without seeing the separator?

Hi,

I'm currently having a problem where pinning any kind of shortcut to the taskbar via its context menu doesn't do anything. That is, a pin doesn't appear on the taskbar, and in the location '%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar' no shortcut file is created.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Professional from Windows 7 Professional. That may be the cause.
Another potential factor is that previously, I have followed this guide (using both methods described) in order to further customize my system. The reason I mention that is because in researching I read the answer posted here. Unfortunately, I have not been able to fix the problem by undoing the first method of that guide; also there is no way to undo the second method of that guide, and I have been unsuccessful in fixing the problem by following the solution that answer describes (I couldn't find the 'Inkfile' folder). By the way, is it wrong that the 'link' key I deleted in following the process to undo the first method hasn't reappeared after restarting?

I'm not sure what to try next.
I would really appreciate some help... sorry to be foolish enough to try and customize my system a bit, if that is what caused this issue.
For now, I guess I'll have to use shortcut toolbars on my taskbar. Or is there a registry location where I can at least go in and, say, add a key with a shortcut address and icon address to add a pin with those properties?

Thanks in advance,
Felewin

I installed Windows 7 recently and am finally making it look and behave the way I like except for one thing I would appreciate help with.

You see, I'm on dial-up... Don't laugh it's still the only thing available where I live.

When I had Windows Vista and before that I always had shortcut icon in my taskbar I could click on to connect or to check the state of my connection. Now I have to click on the Network Sharing Center in the right hand corner, and it takes me 3 more clicks before I'm finally connected. I have to go through the same routine to check if I'm still connected or what speed I connected at. Also, I don't always manage to connect on the first try so I have to go through that routine many times. I did manage to create a shortcut by opening Adapter Settings and creating one from there but the problem is Windows 7 wont let me pin that shortcut to the taskbar. I don't know what is worse... Having to go through the 3 or 4 cliks to connect, or having to stare at that huge dial-up shortcut all the time on my otherwise pristine desk top? Oh, and thanks for the little file that allowed me to remove the Libraries Icon from my desktop. Was really happy to find that little gem.

Any suggestion with my current problem would be greatly appreciated.

Something weird has happened to my taskbar. I have a few programs pinned there and everything was okay. Then today I unpinned Firefox from there because I wanted to change the icon I was using. After deciding I didn't like it I tried to go back to the one I was using but when I pinned it back to the task bar this problem occurred:

As you can see when I click on the silver Firefox icon, it opens up a new firefox icon (default icon) in a separate place, taking up unnecessary space. I can't figure out how to make it go back to the way it was where everything stayed within the silver icon.

Answer:Strange problem with pinning an icon to taskbar

It is indeed the browser being opened but the problem is it used to open up within the silver icon (the default firefox icon you see to the right has basically taken its place). It's a bit of an annoyance because it takes up the little space I have on my taskbar before things start getting combined and messy.

Sorry if what I'm explaining is confusing, it would probably be easier to show with a video or something.

Hello everyone,

First post here and thanks for allowing me to be a part of the community!

My first question is while attempting to pin a website to the task bar in Edge I followed the directions and selected the "3 dots menu" and then selected "open with IE" option as instructed.

When I click on the webpage icon in the task bar the site indeed comes up but it is in Internet Explorer rather than Edge. Is there any way I can pin the site to the task bar and have it launch in Edge rather than IE? I understand it opens in IE because I opened the website in Edge and then told it to open with IE.

When I tried pinning the tab to the task bar in Edge I got the universal red circle with the line through it so I couldn't pin it unless I opened it in IE.

Ive noticed when I pin a website to the Start Menu that it will open in Edge. Is it not possible to have this happen by using the task bar?

Thanks so much for your help.

Appreciate interacting with you folks very much.

best,

rick

However, on my MSI Wind with Win 7 Pro (x86), this does not happen to the firefox icon (no TB installed on MSI Wind)

I would like the menu to look like the result of right-clicking on the Excel's icon (with "Recent" and "Pinned" menus; file names blurred on purpose):

How can I re-enable this kind of menu for PowerPoint?

So I have Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird pinned to my task bar. However, when I check, use small icons, the icons for ONLY FF/TB disappear and are replaced by like the windows generic file icon. Does this happen to anyone else? (Win 7 Ultimate x64)

However, on my MSI Wind with Win 7 Pro (x86), this does not happen to the firefox icon (no TB installed on MSI Wind)

Any ideas?

Another interesting thing is that if I right click the LARGE icon, it shows the program and the option to unpin, that icon there is also that generic windows file icon.

Hi everyone. I'm having a problem, which I have no idea why it's happening. I recently installed Windows 10, and everything was fine until I started installing my programs and wanted to pin the ones I use most to the taskbar.

Some of them can be pinned to the taskbar, but others can't for some reason. Even though they have the option "Pin to taskbar" when I right click, nothing happens after I click it, they don't get pinned. I have tried all methods described in this article.

This is a screenshot of my desktop with all icons that can be pinned to the taskbar in green, and the ones that can't be pinned in red (examples: Steam, AIMP, CCleaner, Word). Note that "metro" apps can be added without any problem. Also, I didn't have this issue in Windows 8/8.1.

And here examples of the methods I have tried.

(right click from desktop shortcut)
(right click from start menu)
(right click from taskbar after opening the program)
Any ideas? I would very much appreciate any help.

Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the shortcut and and taskbar wont load. The only way I could get around is using taskmanager. I notice that explorer.exe isn't running though.

I restart my computer to fix the problem. It is kind of getting annoying though since it happens randomly. Sometimes it shows, sometimes it doesn't. Any ideas how to stop it from happening again?

For example, I have a Desktop shortcut to a "something.xls" (Excel) file which, when clicked, opens in Excel.
But if I right click on it, the context menu does not give a pin to Taskbar option.

First let me say, man, i love this OS! i was really hesitant since XP worked what i at least THOUGHT was well. But W7 is so much quicker and seamless. Anyways, 1st question is on XP i would drag a shortcut to the taskbar and it would then be usable and work as the original shortcut did. With 7 it doesn't wok. For example, i have a txt file that i keep on another drive and i put a shortcut to it on my taskbar. In XP i'd click it and the file would pop up as you'd expect. On 7 if i drag that txt file to the taskbar, when i click the resulting shortcut instead of the file i just get a new empty notepad. If i right click it (i THINK it was by R/clicking) then a list of various notepad files i've viewed pops up and i can choose it from there. But i just want it to be a shortcut to the particular txt file. Is there a way? second, i see shortcuts don't have the file's pathway or "address" if you will in them. I miss that for a number of reasons such as being able to tell where the file it's pointing to is, or adding switches in the target line etc etc. Is there a way to make them show the pathway? Thanks, and no doubt you'll be hearing more from me !

Answer:New to W7, questions about taskbar & shortcuts

Try this, it should work;

Paste the shortcut to the text file in:

c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

substituting your username.

There probably is an easier way, but that should work.

Is there a way to Pin an object to the taskbar that when I clicked it, it would fly out a menu of shortcuts/programs I put in there? Kind of like jump lists for specific programs except it would be a bunch of shortcuts. For work I have a variety of tools I use throughout the day (too many to just pin them all) it would be nice that I could click an object in the taskbar and have it give me a nice menu of shortcuts I specify.

I found a software package called Bins that seems like what I'm looking for, but one of their Windows 10 limitations is that it will only work on the primary screen's taskbar and not the others.

Any ideas? Free is ideal, but I would consider spending a little to get this functionality.

I am trying to put some shortcuts of games from steam on my taskbar but it wont let me because they are considered internet shortcuts. How can I place an internet shortcut on my taskbar??

Answer:No internet shortcuts on taskbar????

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but you can add an address toolbar to your task bar and then put as many Internet addresses there as you want. When you click on the menu arrow, all of the addresses you have in there will show up. To get the Address area to show up on your task bar just right click on the task bar and then go to the Toolbar item which will lead you to the Address item. I am sorry if you already know this. Hope it is of some help, however. Thanks.

Just installed my Win 7 upgrade disk. Something has changed from the last Win 7 RC. I've got two shortcuts to Thunderbird. Each includes a profile parameter so that one opens my wife's mail, the other mine.

Previously, I could pin both to the taskbar. Now I can only pin one. Adding a second does nothing. I even tried to "trick" the system by pinning a shortcut to another program and then changing the properties to those of a Thunderbird shortcut, but once the executable file (thunderbird.exe) was applied in the properties it would vanish. I also tried adding the shortcut directly to the hidden folder where they are stored but it still won't show on the task bar.

Two fixes that I'm not happy with: 1) make a copy of the thunderbird.exe and rename it thunderburd.exe. Have one profile point to this copy. Works, but I have to remember to manually update the copy. 2) create a task in task scheduler and run the task link. Works, but it takes half a second longer to run and a DOS box pops up for a second as the program starts.

Adding the quick launch toolbar seems redundant and I don't want another spacer bar sub-dividing my task bar.

So - how do I convince Windows 7 that I should be able to pin multiple copies of the same file executable to my taskbar?

Thanks,
Ric

Answer:Can't Pin Similar Shortcuts to Taskbar

Hello Ric,

I'm sorry, but by default you cannot pin multiple EXE files for the same exe file location on the taskbar like that in Windows 7.

You may be able to right click on the pinned icon, and pin any of the multiple opened windows for that program in the Jump List of the pinned program instead though. See step 5 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below for more on this.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ram-links.html

Other options are to have the multiples in Quick Launch, a pinned folder, or like pinning the Recycle Bin to the taskbar but use your program exe or shortcut instead.

Hope this helps,

How can I delete the icons that I can't see?

Hello Nomnomno, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Ths pinned items on the taskbar will be located in this this hidden system folder:

What have you linked the shortcuts to?
If it is a folder you have linked it to - it won't pin as an extra icon, it will come up in the jumplist (right hand click) of the explorer icon.

EDIT: Also, when you drag a program's executable file to the taskbar, it will make its own shortcut there.

Win7 Home Premium (no Group Policy Editor)

I enabled the Links toolbar and populated it with various shortcuts. Half of the shortcuts would open normally with the other half displaying the ?Open File ? Security Warning?. I went to Brink?s tutorial at Open File Security Warning - Enable or Disable and executed OPTION TWO Number 2. It worked perfectly. (Thank you, Brink).

What I would really like to have instead of the Links toolbar active would be to have an icon (folder) on the taskbar that works identically to the Links toolbar. Whether I hover the cursor over the icon and the menu of shortcuts appear or click on the icon and have the menu of shortcuts appear makes no difference. Can such a ?folder? placed on the taskbar be created that will contain a menu of shortcuts and act identically to the Links toolbar?

Thank you in advance for looking into this.

I have created several Window Explorer shortcuts that open specific folder views -- all different. I did this to avoid scrolling through the left navigation pane in the standard Window Explorer view. I just click on the desired shortcut, and Windows Explorer opens to that particular customized window. Not really rocket science...

My problem is I would like to pin a couple of these desktop shortcuts to the taskbar for easier access. But it appears that I can only pin one of these Window Shortcuts at a time (have to unpin one to pin another). Anyone know of a way to do this? Note: I can pin multiple ones to the Start Menu, but only one to the Taskbar.

Answer:Way to pin different Window Explorer shortcuts to Taskbar

If you create the shortcut with a target like this...
%windir%\explorer.exe "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp"
...then you should be able to pin those to the task bar.

Hello all

I have done a very stupid and epic fail... earlier today before the hours of searching the internet and importing registry settings to fix i was just trying to edit a simple .txt document in search.
I opened the open as and selected notepad and to always use on this sort of file, to my horror i froze as all desktop icons and even taskbar links turned into .lnk files... NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
What was worse was i then tried to change them again and accidently changed them to run regedit.exe as their preferred run program.

So with hours of reg merges and few other fixes on the internet i have succeded in doing.... nothing.
The .exe and .lnk regestry files are fixed in regedit and the original .exe files in their corrasponding folders work fine. its just when they get onto desktop as shortcuts... even creating the shortcut in the original folder gets an error message...

"Windows cannot create a shortcut here."

"Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?"

So im stumped the programs are working fine but the shortcuts are now intant merges for regedit...

Some1 please help me and stop me from messing up my system any more ><

Cheers for your time, if you cant and i have just wasted your time sorry

For example, if i hit Windows Key + E to open windows explorer, then the windows key, ctrl+esc, or clicking anywhere on the taskbar, all do nothing. however, after it freezes the taskbar, if i right click on my computer, and click explore, it not only opens a windows explorer window, it opens all that i've requested while the taskbar was frozen...so, win+e (freeze), win+e, win+e, then right click, explore = 4 windows explorers.

Hello,

I am hoping one of you great people can help me out. A few days ago, I got the system security virus and system protection virus. It seemed to get progressively worse as I tried to clean it to the point where it restarted and the taskbar, shortcuts were gone, only the background would load. It does not matter how I boot up, nothing is there. I was able to run programs from the task bar, but could not until today, run Malware or Avira or HJT. Finally I got it to run and it has seemed to clean up many of the item, but still no shortcuts or taskbar. I cannot see if I am connected to the internet with my wireless, so I don't know of that is the problem. Attached are my logs for malware and hjt and will try to run anything else you suggest. I also tried kelly's tricks and tips for taskbar repair, but it did not work. Unfortunately, I have a dell inspiron 6000 with no recovery disks.

If I have to run anything else and post a log, I have to first save it to a thumb drive and use my good computer.
Thanks for any help.

Brian

Hi, I just upgraded from Windows 7 to 10.
I'm used to clicking a single icon (no text) shortcut to open a browser for example, and then a new window opens as well as a new taskbar window.

In Windows 10 however it seems the shortcut icon simple expands with text and becomes 'active'.
Is there a way around this and do it like Windows 7 did?
(I already disabled the Combine Taskbar setting btw)

One of the great features of Windows 7 is the Superbar. It lets you pin programs to the taskbar, similar to pinning programs to the start menu in earlier version of Windows.
If you want to have a clean desktop, you might want to pin Computer, Recycle Bin and other icons to the Taskbar. But pinning Computer and other icons to the taskbar is not possible by default.
Generally, Windows 7 displays Pin to Taskbar option when you right-click on a program, but you can?t see that option for Computer and other icons and if you drag and drop the shortcut of Computer and other icons then the Libraries shortcut appears instead of the default one.
In order to pin Computer & other shortcuts to Windows 7 taskbar, just follow the tutorial:-
1. Right-click on the Desktop and select New>Shortcut.
2. Type your shortcut?s path as follows:
Computer - %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe shell:MyComputerFolder
Recycle Bin - %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe shell:RecycleBinFolder
Documents - %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe shell:MyDocumentsFolder
Control Panel - %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe shell:ControlPanelFolder
Pictures - %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe shell:PicturesFolder
Music - %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe shell:MusicFolder
3. Click on Next and type the name of the shortcut.
4. Click on Finish.
The new shortcut will appear on the Desktop and then you can easily pin it to the taskbar. If you want you can also change the icons of the shortcuts. Source

In Windows XP when you right click the task bar and add a shortcuts toolbar, you are free to have the new toolbar on any edge of the screen away from the taskbar. In Windows 7, I seem to have that shortcut bar stuck on the taskbar. How can I move the shortcut bar to the top of the screen and keep the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, please?

Answer:Shortcuts toolbar stuck on Taskbar

If you right click the desktop and open "Personalize", then Taskbar and Start Menu, you are given the option to have your taskbar at the top, bottom, left or right of the desktop.
You can put your shortcut icons individually wherever you want on Windows 7 desktop.

-C# (Shortcut)
-Eclipse (Shortcut)
I want to put all 4 of these items into a "group" called "Programming" and then put it on the Dock. Any idea how to do this?a

Answer:Question about shortcuts and the Taskbar/Dock

There are lots of ways to do that.
Such as Rocketdock, Objectdock
You will need to use Stack Docklet with rocketdock.

Anather option is 7 Stacks

Or if you dont want to use any third party app you can make it with windows taskbar.
Make shortcuts of all folders and put them in one folder and then pin that folder to taskbar
Hear is a tutorial for that.

Just installed Windows 10 - totally successful BUT: no shortcuts/links work in start menu, desktop or taskbar except for links to modern UI apps. Even weirder - shortcuts work if palced in saem directory as the target file/exe but not if then moved elsewhere, like desktop. And even weirder - right clicking a short cut and selecting open or run as administrator don't work, but selecting 'run with graphics card' does work...

I've tried every conceivable setting and nothing works. going crazy. This is installed on a Dell laptop.

Please help....

After booting up, there is no desktop icons, no taskbar, no nothing. The background scheme is there but nothing. Also I have remote software installed, I can access all the files, folders everything thro this program tho. I can even run a program by going into the folder on the hard drive and starting it there instead of the desktop. System restore doesn't work and I don't even get the desktop thro safe mode. I even tried windows hotkeys.

I'm helping a guy with an old school comp running xp.

when i start the pc up, it goes into windows fine but all that comes up is the desktop wallpaper. there's no taskbar or icons / my documents, recycle bin etc.

it's just blank except for the wall paper.

i can ctrl+alt+del and get task manager but it doesn't look like anything fishy is running BUT if i'm not mistaken, aren't i supposed to see some kind of EXPLORER running?

any help is appreciated...

Hi all
I'm new to the forum and looking for some help with a strange problem I am having with my windows 8.

I have an ASUS laptop running 8.0 which I am running with a second screen (dell monitor) connected via VGA. I have it set so the external monitor is the primary screen and the laptop is the secondary screen. It is set for a taskbar on each display, with the primary taskbar containing the shortcuts on the monitor, so when I click them they open there. It's been working fine for months.

So I switched it on today and my taskbar shortcuts have jumped to the taskbar on the second (laptop) screen, however my external display is still set as the primary and still has my desktop icons, trashcan etc but a blank taskbar (like the one that used to be on the secondary display)! When I click the shortcuts which are now on the taskbar of the laptop screen they open on the monitor. (ie the wrong screen) I disconnected the monitor, turned off the extended desktop and set it to just use the laptop screen. All my desktop icons moved to the laptop screen but the taskbar shortcuts vanished and I was left with a blank taskbar. If I plug the monitor in again and extend the desktop they reappear, but on the wrong screen. Even if I reboot without the external screen connected I get no shortcuts until I plug in the monitor and set it to extend the desktop. I have checked all the taskbar settings and they are all correct.

It's driving me nuts, can anyone please help?!
Thanks

Answer:Taskbar shortcuts appearing on wrong screen

More details... Although the taskbar shortcuts have moved to the second screen, the clock, tray etc is still where it used to be. It seems just the shortcuts are affected!

Thanks

Using Firefox 7.0 now after the latest upgrade and this all worked in version 6 but now with version 7 I cannot pin both of my shortcuts for my wife and I to the taskbar at the same time. Each shortcut is launching FF with different profiles. But windows seems to think they are the same program which they are of course but with different arguments.
I did this in FF6 but can't now. If I pin one of them, they both show on the right click as "unpin from taskbar". Same for the start menu. And if I try dragging the unpinned shortcut to the taskbar, I get the icon indicating I can't do it. I've even tried making copies of the icon in the roaming folder but only one shows up.
There was a hint to pin any other program to the taskbar then go into properties and change the target string and name to turn it into my shortcut, but the minute you save the properties that 2nd new shortcut disappears, I guess the OS sees the fault and removes the duplicity.
It's driving me crazy. I did make a shortcut running cmd /C firefox.... etc and this works but the cmd window stays till I exit. A minor flaw but none the same.

Answer:Cannot pin two firefox shortcuts to the taskbar - win7 home

The problem is not solved so much as addressed. After much research / attempts etc, I backloaded the last version 6.0x version and this works fine. I'm now assuming its version 7.
However I will not let this sit, as I had issues moving from version 5 to 6. Now 6 to 7. So possibly another upgrade attempt is in my future. Wish me good luck.

In Windows 7, why can't you add shortcuts to the taskbar by just copying them into
Code:
\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
?

This technique works fine for adding shortcuts to the Start Menu... simply copy them to
Code:
\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
When you copy the shortcuts into the appropriate folder for the taskbar, however, they don't appear in the taskbar. Rebooting does not help. Why doesn't this work?

I'm a keyboard guy and had a couple of folders on my start bar in XP. I'd hit Ctrl+Esc to fly up the Start menu, then an S for the Stuff folder, then an F (for instance) to start my "F"ont program. I now, of course, can't do that same thing on the Windows 7 Start menu.

I've created a toolbar on my task bar but can't find a way to access it with a keystroke. Is there one?

Thanks!
Ken

Answer:Keyboard Shortcuts to Taskbar Button bars?

The easiest solution to your problem is to create a shortcut to whatever you want on the desktop and assign it a keyboard shortcut.

Hello there everyone:

I have a really exasperating problem. I have a computer with only one account on it, but to-day, several have appeared. My taskbar and desktop icons have gone, and despite managing to do a scan for viruses through the RUN command on Task manager, they have not come back.

I have tried to get up System Restore through task manager - it doesn't work. I have also tried pressing f8 on loadup and booting the system in safe mode and in safe mode with command prompt, but only a black screen with 'safe mode' in each corner appears. Explorer.exe and the system restore exe have both gone... I've tried all the malware programs that I could open, and they don't detect a thing. I've been suggested a bunch of programs like Toolbar Repair and TaskbarRepairTool, but they don't do anything.

It's a fairly new computer, and I've copied all the files I need from it - the only thing that I would have to buy is an edition of word. Is there anything that I can do to bring my system restore back and bring my computer back to normality? Or will I have to sweep it all off and reinstall Windows? If so, I was given no recovery disk with the sale, so how would I go about it?

Best wishes, *c

Always dragged a copy of Computer and Control Panel icons to the taskbar at the bottom in Vista. 7 doesn't seem to let you do that. It just says pinned but they aren't there. Also notice that some of the programs I have reinstalled after installing 7 at the ned ask if you want to add a shortcut to the desktop or quick launch taskbar then don't appear there either.

Answer:Computer or Control Panel shortcuts on taskbar

Pinning Control Panel is easy. Open up the Control Panel, right click on it's icon on the taskbar-Pin to taskbar.

Others..

Computer - Pin to Taskbar
Windows Explorer Taskbar Icon - Change Open To Target
Quick Launch - Enable or Disable

The title says it all. I delete the target of the shortcut and then I can't get rid of it from the SM pr taskbar :-/

Answer:BUG: Unable to unpin shortcuts from the Start menu or taskbar

This might help you : (and searching BTW)Delete the key below to get rid of your start menu pins..Joe Shonk wrote in another thread :These are located in the registry under the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage\If you delete this key, it will recreate but you will lose all your start menu pins.Unfortunately, everything is stored in a binary format making modifications difficult.Joe Shonk

It could just be an anomaly, and won't happen again, but you should do a full scan with your Anti-Virus software followed by a full scan with Malwarebytes.

Hi Everybody,

I'm writing you because I'm having an annoying problem with the Taskbar in Windows 7 RTM...

From time to time (every couple of days) Pinned Programms in the Taskbar suddenly stop working.
Trying to start a Pinned Item is followed by an error Message, that the target Program seems to have been mooved or deleted.
A look at C:\Users\(USERNAME)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar only shows an empty directory after this bug.
Even the created Librarys dissappear. Trying to create new ones is qouted with: You can't create rhe Library XXXX. Accsses denied.

I can't figgure out a reason for this since this happened on different occasions. Most of them didn't even include operations on the Filesystem. For Exapmle browsing the Internet with IE. On an other occasion I've been using the "Send To" dialog.

I looking forward for any Help on this Issue. Thanks in advance.

With Regards.

Answer:TaskBar - Pinned Shortcuts dissappear/stop working

After numerous redoing of pinned shortcuts, I found that auto-hide killed them all every reboot. I stopped using auto-hide and the shortcuts stayed. Still looking to move aero peek/show desktop button to center or left on taskbar, still no luck figuring that out.

I've managed to get myself into a bit of a mess. Not sure what this one is called, so I don't think I'll be able to find it in the other topics. Anyway, there's an icon in the taskbar that is a red hexagon with a white x that gives messages every once in a while. It puts shortcuts on the desktop that leads to ads and porn. It also opens popups. It then says to download antispy software to get rid of it. I tried using spybot and ad-aware. Anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it? (I'm using Windows XP SP1)

Answer:puts shortcuts on desktop, popups, icon in taskbar, etc.

it suddenly stopped working the shortcuts are not opening when i click on them is it a setting?:

and why is the shortcuts on the taskbar explorer (when u right click it like in the gif) have the same shortcuts as in the explorer window (the shortcuts on the sides) i have 39 shortcuts in the explorer window and in the taskbar explorer icon it only shows a couple and i want to have different shortcuts there and sort them manually but they are all static i can't touch them! I can only remove them but the it removes them in the main explorer window too! they are synced for some !"#!"#@ reason.
