My Windows 7 copy looks fake. Typo on back cover. Came from China.

Question: My Windows 7 copy looks fake. Typo on back cover. Came from China.

So I decided to buy Windows 7 from eBay. I didn't trust the people selling product keys only, so I purchased a brand new retail package. When I shop on eBay, I always look for sellers that are really close to me so shipping is fast. So I found a seller, said to be located in Maryland (which is two states away from me), with a great price and great feedback for his W7 sells. I was pissed because when the guy sent me the tracking number, I found out that the item was coming from Beijing, China, not Maryland! But I figured, well at least he shipped it.

THEN, I get an email from eBay saying the listing for the item I just purchased because the copyright holder reported that the item may be a counterfeit. At first I was pissed at eBay because now I had to record of the transaction in my eBay account and could not contact the seller directly from within the item invoice, since eBay deleted. Plus, he had several other sells of this same item, all with positive feedback of the W7 package, and eBay did not remove the listings for them. So I was like, why me? Luckily, I had his email from paypal and contacted him. He assured me that he is the legal owner of the item and that he sent proof to eBay saying so. Still never got my records back.

Anyway, this prompted me to search counterfeit Windows 7 retail packages. I found some interesting info, but my package doesn't fit any of the counterfeit profiles Microsoft says to look out for. The top hologram is built onto the cds, not stickers. Both my CD's have holograms on the small inner ring on the data side of the disks. The COA has the correct print inter-wooven into it and says Made in Puerto Rico. The Product Key passed PID check and activation. The three digit key everyone talks about is 068 (not 065, 066, or 067). And overall, the package looks extremely genuine...unless you actually look for counterfeit features, which I have found that leads me to believe this was not made by Microsoft.

Firstly, the MAJOR thing I found that prompted this whole suspicion. On the back cover, in the second foot not under the features bullet list, there is a TYPO. Referring to XP Mode, it is says "2. Requires download of Windows XP Mode (which tuns on Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate)..." Notice it says "tuns on Windows 7..." instead of "runs on Windows 7..."! Being that the T key is right next to the R on a QWERTY keyboard, this leads me to believe this is human error. Aren't these things manufactured in a factory or something, by robots and machines...and Quality Controlled??? Also, all the text under the bullet list is not that sharp, like it was printed on an inkjet. Also, all that text under the bullet list is yellow. I believe on a genuine copy, that text is white, no? Here is the picture link:

Here's the front cover. Nothing really to note here, that I can see:

Another major flaw I found was on the top of the 32-Bit disc. Notice that in relation to the Microsoft/Genuine hologram at the top right and the large Windows 7 hologram at the bottom, the text on the center of the disc is is upside down and some of the black coating is chipped off:

The 64-Bit disc is just about perfect, other than some slight chipping of the black coating:

The COA looks really authentic other than the barcode being shaped different than the one on the Windows 7 counterfeit page, even though the SKU number is the same. Another interesting note, if I take my barcode scanner app on my iphone and scan the barcode on the MS website, it comes up as "Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Full (From $137 online / $269.99 local)." When I scan the barcode on my physical COA, I get "Windows 7 Ult English DVD (From $85 online)." I don't know what the different could be, because the SKU numbers in the barcodes match.

Another thing I noticed was some ink smeared on a page of the information booklet.

Lastly, the text and pictures in the info booklet are not that clear and look like poor inkjet printing:

So, what do you guys think? I'm scared to report this to MS in fear of them making my key blacklisted. But I am also afraid that my key might get blacklisted in the future, even though it doesn't have characteristics of an MSDN product key! Other than that stuff I noticed, it installed fine!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:My Windows 7 copy looks counterfeit. Typo on back cover. Came from China (eBay). Pics

It's fake, that's pretty obvious. The hologram thing is most likely a sticker on top of the actual disc surface - you can use a fingernail or razor blade at the very edge and lift it up a bit, that's 100% proof. The part numbers don't seem to match up with the actual Windows 7 Ultimate part number, and it just has a fake quality all the way around.

If you contact Microsoft, show them the pics, explain where you bought it from and your situation, there is a small - small but it exists - chance they'll provide you with a key just for making the report and identifying the seller you got it from.

No guarantees, but at the moment you're better off reporting it to them and going from there. Sure can't hurt to let them know, either way.

I'd report it, personally, without even really thinking about it. It just SCREAMS fake.

So, I spilled soda on my laptop yesterday and I have cleaned up everything and the keys are working fine, except the enter button. I want to access the keyboard to see if there is soda inside the computer. How do I remove the back cover without dealing damage? Second question, how do I remove the enter key? I got all the other keys off, but it won't come off.  Thanks in advance!

Heads up about a string of blogs using familiar names like FileHippo and Softpedia in their URL, when searching for software downloads. I cannot guarantee their legitimacy, or safety to visit or download from these rip-off blogs.

i get a pop-up on my Satellite lap-top saying my WindowsXP is a fake copy, but it came installed on the computer which I bought new from PCWorld 5 years ago. The certificate of authenticity is on the back of the machine. I've tried various help sites for help and got nowhere. Can anyone tell a pc learner how to solve this problem please?

Answer:OEM Windows fake copy?

Hi

Just without panic. When you describe some problem it is always good if you mention which notebook model you have and which OS is preinstalled. Is this OS your own installation or delivered recovery image.

It is interesting to know if you have installed SP2 and does this message occurs since short time after installing of some Windows (automatic) updates.

Please be so nice and write a little bit more about your problem. Just two sentences problem description is for me funny and please don?t expect some step by step solution. I love writing some answers and try to help but postings like yours are definitely deficient.

Maybe I will look this thread later, after properly problem description.

Source: Maxthon Browser Sends Sensitive Data to China | SecurityWeek.Com

Researchers at Fidelis Cybersecurity and Poland-based Exatel recently found that Maxthon regularly sends a file named ueipdata.zip to a server in Beijing, China, via HTTP. Further analysis revealed that ueipdata.zip contains an encrypted file named dat.txt. This file stores information on the operating system, CPU, ad blocker status, homepage URL, websites visited by the user (including online searches), and installed applications and their version number.

While dat.txt is encrypted, experts easily found the key needed to decrypt it, giving them access to the information. Exatel researchers demonstrated how a man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacker could intercept the data as it travels from the client to the Maxthon server in China.Click to expand...

This is not the first time researchers have raised concerns about web browsers developed by Chinese companies. Experts at the University of Toronto?s Citizen Lab have identified security and privacy issues in several popular Chinese browsers, including QQ Browser, UC Browserand Baidu Browser.

Answer:Maxthon sends sensitive data back to China

I used Maxthon very briefly, and the UI was ugly and it ran slow. This just reaffirms why I'll never touch it again.

Answer:Solved: Its Back...The Fake Windows Security Alert

8 more replies
Relevance 56.58%

Hi all,

Back with another problem. I am using Vista OS.

Today I got infected by a highly annoying fake trojan which disguised itself as Windows Defender and kept popping up with fake alerts in an urge for me to purchase the full version of their software. It also created its own shortcut on my desktop and I could see two of its icons sitting in my programs startup menu and when I right clicked on the I could see they were situated in ...C:\Users\(my computer name)\Appdata\Local\Temp\snexracwmo.exe

Well my AVG kept popping up with warnings also and I removed numerous files and spyware and I ran a full scan on my main drive (1 file refused to be removed), I also removed 2 bad reg entry with Malwarebytes. After this the shortcut and the icons remained, so did the annoying fake alerts.

As a last resort I ran a system restore (which supposedly failed) but after my laptop rebooted the shortcut and the files in my startup menu were gone and I left it on for a while running Spybot and I didnt get any of the fake alerts. I also had a quick look at my registry and didnt find anything which looked suspicious.

After an attack by this trojan I would like to ensure it is fully wiped off and no more remains, can anybody suggest how I can do this?

Thank You very much

The infected computer is 32 bit windows 7.

I got a fake antivirus infection back in early december. It locked up my internet and tried to prevent me from running any EXEs. I found someone's thread on here who seemed to have the same problem, so I followed the instructions they were given instead of opening my own thread . That seemed to fix the problem, but Malwarebytes and Avira kept finding stuff to remove. It's been getting worse, and now the internet is locked up on it again.

Thanks in advance.

So I was browsing around in Windows Defender (Windows Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender > Open Windows Defender Security Center > Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings, then scroll down to Controlled folder access.)

The sentence "Protect your files and folders from unauthorized changed by unfriendly applications" has a typo in it.
(Refer to the attached picture)

Either:
? The word "changed" has a typo in it and should be the word "changes" (with an 's' instead of a 'd'), or
? There is at least one missing word in between the words "unauthorized" & "changed"
Somebody should inform Microsoft about this typo.

But Also: I noticed that this is a new option, since the last time I was browsing around in there. What does this option exactly do? It was originally off, but I turned it On. Yet I must say that I have seen a few messages pop up in the right corner of the screen, stating that Windows Defender blocked some programs from making changes. One of them showed explorer.exe from modifying the Favorites folder without me doing anything with Favorites. Exactly what does this option do? Is it kind of like some sort of strict "Firewall"? Because if so, then I like that.

Answer:HAH, I Found A Typo In Windows!

Mine says 'unauthorised' (but then it should in the UK) - still has the typo though

Blocks access to your files and documents by unknown apps (malware/ransomware). It's off by default because not all 'good' apps are in it's 'trusted' list. It takes a bit of fiddling to get all your apps to work after you turn it on.

It will work, however, with the user's data files.Instead, a good way to back up your programmes with Windows 7 (which I'm guessing is the main computer's OS) is to use the System image backup utility.Casey

Can someone tell me how to replace the key cover onto a laptop computer please? It doesn't appear to be broken, but it is off. It has two silver colored things on the keyboard and the cover has a white plastic insert that corresponds with the silver parts on the keyboard.

Answer:Solved: My F key cover came off and I don't know how to put it back on

Pop the white part off of the bottom of the key and put it on those metal clips on the laptop, being careful not to bend the clips. If they break, you'll need a new keyboard.

After the clip is on there, line the key up on top of it and snap it on.

Should be pretty easy, just don't rush and push too hard.

So I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue for quite some time. Previously I had used an application called KillCopy, as I had thought it would speed up the copying of files between my portable hard drive and my PC when I had Windows Vista. I know it's not going to be the fastest, however I felt that it was much slower than it should be and also that Vista was notoriously slow when copying large amounts of data.

I've previously installed Windows 7, and wanted to go ahead and remove killcopy. From what I can find, there is no uninstall manager, and there is nothing listed in Add / Remove programs. As a test, I've renamed the killcopy directory to "KillcopyX", and now when I go to copy files Killcopy won't run but neither will the traditional manager that displays from within Windows.

Is there any way that I can permanently remove this application, and restore the windows file manager to handling the copy process? Perhaps a registry change or something?

Thanks!

Answer:Un-integrating KillCopy and going back to Windows copy manager?

reinstall KillCopy then uninstall?
how is it on your Win7 install if you had installed it under Vista? did you do an in-place upgrade from Vista to 7?

I'm under the impression, to get the front cover off, you need to remove the "back" or "rear" panel first(.i.e. not the one you can remove with a Torx  15 Screwdriver...The other panel.) That way, once removed, you can loosen the3 tabs on each side of the front panel, to remove it. To have a look at the rear of my computer, although it's not my computer, it looks exactly the same. He shows the rear of the case, around 50 sec. into the video...Are those some type of screws? YouTube Video Thanks in advance, Chef_D

Answer:Which back cover color for lumia 620 !!

Hmmm...never had either...best thing is to see it in person at a local phone shop. Personally I would go for yellow. The green is unique and no one has it...but I think yellow just looks better. Plus is it glossy or matt finished as that also makes a big difference. But check it at a phone store tho.

Hi,

I have a P300-01S (Canada). There is a second drive bay, including the sata/power connectors.
I've installed a second hard drive (64gb SSD), and it works just fine.

However, the cover for the drive bay will not fit back on. The cover has 5 pegs that prevent it from being put back on if a drive is in the bay. I believe the pegs are there to provide support to the cover when no drive is in there.

I see no way to remove these other then to snap them off. Any ideas?
These are not the normal tabs on the edges that are used to hold the cover in place, these are 1/2" long cylindrical pegs in the middle of the drive bay cover.

Answer:Satellite P300-01S: Second HDD cover will not fit back on

Found another thread about this, it seems others are just cutting off the pegs, I will do the same I guess.

Hi, My T440s came with a broken (a tiny crack but still) back cover. The support wasn't able to find the part number. So they want to exchange the whole computer which, to me, looks like a huge waste of money and time for everyone - it's only 8 screws and a piece of plastic that they could send over to me. Does anyone know what FRU pert number the back cover is?

Answer:Back cover broken/cracked

I think you may be able to find it in the manual. But because the computer is so new, they may not be familiar with the part number. You would think it would be an easy look up (because that is how one would get familiar over time time) but  hey can't win sometimes. I would hate to do a replacement as that would be time with out my computer.

Yes we can get you the Manual and plastic case parts are available but parts do not just "come loose". Either somebody is secretly taking a screwdriver to it while you are not looking or there is a failure somewhare in the hinge system which can work screws loose. Can we have a little more description or perhaps a picture? Page 18 here has an exploded diagram with the parts. Can you point out what is coming apart and how? Hi, Is it possible to have the back cover screws replaced if they wear off? Since mine is starting to wear off due to I got 2 ssd and one of them is my home use ssd and other one is for work/testing ssd so I switch between them alot depending what I'm doing and I noticed couple screws of mine are begining to wear off so it's starting to get harder on unscrew them due to + shape is becoming more rounded each time almost, the laptop itself has no damage on motherboard or any inside area only screws on back cover is wearing out so is it possible to have this fixed or something and does it void the warranty if only screws wear off? I hope not since if so it would be ridiculous reason :/

Hi, Im replacing the lid back cover of my touch y50-70. The question is: Is a lid back cover of a touch y50-70 the same of a non-touch one? Whats different?   Thanks a lot.

Answer:Lenovo y50-70 touch lid back cover

Hi delta_rob ,

Greetings.

Checked on both system based on Hardware manuals (Page 34-35 base cover , page 83Y50-70/Y50-80/Y50-70 Touch/Y50-80 Touch) and they have same manuals too.
Both have same part number : 5CB0F78813  ( Item16 Lower Case C Y50-70 (Y50-70/Y50-80/Y50-70 Touch/Y50-80 Touch)

Checked with serviceable parts using sample machine numbers  on both models :

LENOVO Y50-70 Machine number 59413538 BASE COVER 5CB0F78813 LOWER CASE C Y50-70

LENOVO Y50-70TOUCH Machine number :59421810BASE COVER 5CB0F78813 LOWER CASE C Y50-70

So most likely no difference for as long as you have the same part number .

Hope this answered your query.

Hi,my name is Miguel and this is my first time posting on the lenovo community page.I had bought a Lenovo IdeaPad P580 last year at Best Buy and had already gone through the 1-year warranty.Recently my screen had broke, so I took it to a computer repair store to get it fixed and they had actually broken my hinges! Unfortunatly signing a statement saying that they are not liable to any damage during the repair, they had broken both of my hinges and the lcd back cover. Even afterwards, they wanted to charge $280 for the repair for the hinges and the back cover, but failed to because the parts were out of stock.I had tried looking for the parts myself and found the hinges here (http://www.lenovospareparts.com/90201003--LCD-HINGE-H-QIWY9_p_773.html), but couldn't find the metal back cover. Is there any affordable or just a way to fix this screen? I already have a new lcd screen, but the screws and hinges are not bought. Thanks for your guys' time.

I bought a new Thinkpad Edge E545 from Amazon two days ago, and it arrived in the mail this morning.  I also purchased an additional 4 GB memory card to install.  I followed the instructions in the User Manual about Replacing a Memory Module (on page 81).  I started out by attempting to loosen the screws on the back cover.  I used the correct size screwdriver, and three of the four screws loosened quickly and easily.  But, the fourth screw wouldn't loosen, and now it looks like the screw is stipped (or at least partially stripped). Any thoughts on how to proceed?  Since the laptop is brand new, I don't want to have to take it to Microcenter and pay them $100 to get the screw out for me.  But, I also want to have the additional memory card installed (which I can do myself if I could just get the screw out).

I remove the 4 Red screws and loosened the 2 Green ones (sure loose, I can tighten them again)

But now I stuck, can seem to slide the cover off and don't want to force it, there is an indentation that looks like it is for that purpose but not "sliding". Can someone point me in the right direction please? First stop laughing, I know I'm hardware challenged *smiles*

Answer:Taking off the back cover Acer 5100

They don't slide off. Use the indentations to lift off the covers. And yes, you may need to force it. It may have clips or tabs holding the cover in addition to the screws.

Hello there Lenovo Forums.I am writing here because I have a problem with my thinkpad screen and back cover. Just recently I've noticed that the back cover tends to unstick/come off/unglue/disconnect from the glass screen (I am not a native speaker and can't really find a good word to describe it). The whole thing happens mostly when opening the notebook. As the hinges are quite firm and opening the laptop is not as easy as in a macbook it requires some force to open it. I usually open the laptop just as one would open any other e.g. macbook pro. Grab the middle of the screenwith one hand, grab body with other hand and it opens. After noticing what is going on i started grabbing it from the sides to prevent further harm to the machine which is quite counter intuitive for me. Furthermore the camera lens started to get dusty because of the problem. Getting to the problem. Should I just get it repaired by Lenovo, as the device is under warranty, or it is considered user damage even though it seems that the screen unit is faulty. Here I provide photos of what is going on.After opening can see backlightThe glass sticks out of frameMy temporary fix is to get it back into place by pushing it back into frame, but after opening the laptop from the middle of the screen it goes back everytime. Thanks for replies,Jacob

Of course I'm another unfortunately guy that had hinge failure.  While hinges are available for purchase online and not too expensive, the back cover is not.  Apparantly when the hinge failed it broke the plastic mounting point on the LCD panel back cover that the hinge screws into.  This part (90204054 I believe) doesn't appear available online, and even if it was it seams like a rather expensive piece.  Anyone have any help in getting a replacement LCD back cover? Thank you for your assistance.

I just bought a TP Yoga 14. I'm looking to replace the hard drive with an SSD. I checked out a youtube video and I just need to remove 8-10 screws on the back cover and lift it out from the hinge all the way round. But for some reason, I cannot unscrew the tiny screws and have them removed. I'm using a 00 screwdriver but I've tried others. It looks as though the screws are unscrewed, but they don't pop out, even if I whack the back of the case with my hand. I've tried using some pliers to knock against the screwdriver to wedge it in and turn it using the pliers, as I've seen in some videos but it doesn't seem to be helping. If there is an automatic screwdriver and size I should be using or something else which I can buy (amazon, home depot), just let me know. thanks

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga 14 - Cannot unscrew back cover

Hi.

I'm not much of a hardware dissasembly fan, even that I did it on the past with some other models, but it is good to start checking the Thinkpad Maintenance Hardware Manual.

Can you post your full model number? This is the one for the Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20DM, 20DN).

Im trying to remove the cover of my Y500 to upgrade to an SSD and I have all but one screw out... The screw between the 2nd video card bay and the yellow USB slot has this red "bulb" type thing covering the screw. Can I just try and pry it out?

Answer:Removing Ideapad U410 back cover

Check out this Lenovo video for servicing the Y500.  Under the FPU Videos heading there will be a video on how to remove the back cover.   http://service.lenovo.partner-management.com/content/CourseWarePublic/16538/player.html

I'm very dissapointed with Lenovo's product quality. I tried to open the back cover of my U400 and it didn't go very well. I followed the instructions exactly as mentioned on the official videos, taking every single step carefully. However, it's impossible to remove the bottom cover without breaking the plastic tabs. I have yet to hear from someone who has managed to do flawleslly. Anyway, besides this, the battery life is nowhere near 7 hours as Lenovo claims. I can get maybe 4 tops if the screen brightness is turned all the way down, no apps runnig, and wifi radio and bluetooth turned off. I haven't changed any internal components or anything. Would Lenovo accept this return?

Answer:Return U400 after opening the back cover.

Why did you try to open the back cover? It would be really difficult to get a return on the machine if you broke something.

I bought this laptop a year and a half ago and have been very careful with it, I've never dropped it, or taken it many places, but a few month ago I noticed the bottom right edge of the back over wasn't attached so I just popped it back in, it wasn't a big deal so I didn't worry about it.  Then yesterday it popped back off again but this time it was much bigger and I couldn't pop it back in no matter how hard I tried! I took it to staples to see if they could fix it and the guy there said it would take 2-3 weeks and 300$ I can't afford that, and I just bought this laptop last year!  Everything else about it still works fine, the screen isn't cracked, and the keys still work.

I purchased my Lumia 930 online and received a black one, is there any way I could get the back changed to the orange or green? If so how would I go about doing so.

The problem is the following.Normally, when the back cover is fully closed, the black lock should be at the very right position, covering the red part for a screw. In my case it stays in the middle position and can't be moved to the right even applying a slight force. Does anyone familiar with such a problem? Any solutions?

Question: Fake copy

I recently had my system upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, I didn't realise then but do now that it was a fake. Can I install for example Windows 7 Home edition over Ultimate or do I have to have the Windows 7 Ultimate. Could you please advise.

Answer:Fake copy

You can install whichever edition you prefer, of course you'll need to buy a genuine copy first.

If you want to stick to ultimate, just buy a copy of ultimate and change the product key to the new, genuine one.

Product Key Number - Change

If you want to switch to home premium, there are 2 options- you can clean install home premium, this will wipe your C: drive OR you can in-place downgrade to home premium with a well known and working hack. Of course if you had home premium originally installed, you would already have a product key (retail or OEM) that you can use. In fact if your computer came with home premium preloaded and activated you can just run the factory restore and you'll be back to factory default state.

Hack to In-Place “Downgrade” from Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional to Less Premium Editions ? My Digital Life

Regarding what type of license to buy, Upgrade is cheap if you have one computer. If you have 2 or more then the home premium family back is a good deal.
