Question: Account not showing up on login screen

Today I was trying to log in to my computer after a restart. The computer booted and the screen with the Windows 7 Ultimate logo appeared. However, it does not have the username/password box, so I can't log in. The screen is also refreshing (turning black for a second and coming on again) but it is still blank. I tried booting in Safe Mode, but the same problem occurs. Any ideas?

I built the computer 3 years ago, and it hasn't had any problems. It has an AMD 4990 processor with an Asus motherboard (not sure what kind).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

On my computer I have two accounts, Admin and user. Recently, whenever I have started up my computer, all that shows on the login screen is admin. I have to restart it ~50 times to get it to show my personal user account. Any suggestions on how to fix this???

I run Windows 7 home edition.

Hello,

I have been having an issue with quite a few PC's that will show multiple of the same user accounts on the login screen for Windows 7 only. These laptops are joined to a domain and all belong to the Dell Latitude family. I have searched
the webs for information regarding this exact issue but most just point towards using Netplwiz to fix it, which is not the issue I'm trying to resolve.
 As my account is not verified I was unable to post the picture example.

Hi,

When I log onto a windows 10 computer, log out, remote onto the computer with a different account and then log out, the login screen wont update the display name but it will update the user name.

I noticed this started with 1703 and have the same issue with 1709.

Any idea on how to get the Display name to update or to completely hide the remote users details and just show the original users login details?

This is an example of the login screen after doing the above process. Also seems to happen to some users that share a computer.

Hey guys,

So i ran the netplwiz command in order to remove the option of requiring a password on login every time the computer boots, but now its showing my account picture twice on the welcome screen during login.

It's not really a big issue but its more so a "nuisance" that im wanting fixed.

Anyone have an idea on how to correct this issue?

It's a known issue.. there is a fix here on this site and it does work but I'm going to wait for the next build and with luck that issue has been addressed.

I have no idea what happened. I restarted and the only account listed is my daughters account (I know she didnt do anything because she wasn't here)
The administrator account (my account) is not showing at all.
I can access all my files from this account but lost OE identities.
What happened?

This is very strange. A few weeks ago someone in my household created a user account with administrative privileges and changed the other accounts to standard users. Problem is that now we can not log on to the account. It isn't on the log in screen. All I can do it see it through the manage accounts option in the control panel. From here I can attempt to add a password among other things. Since the account I do have access to is standard. What I want to do is, get on the account or get rid of the account. I need administrative privileges on an account I can access. Why can't I see this account on the log in screen?

Hello and welcome Chas mate I would find the culprit and recover the password for that account from whoever it is and change the admin back to what it was previously.

Now given you state it is someone within your household I am thinking this person or persons need a good talking to if that person is still there of course if not then you have a problem.

I don't think even a system restore will do it either.

The alternative is to back up all your data and reinstall.

We have a new dell business computer (don't have model with me now, but its an optiplex with serial and ps2 ports in the back, purchased a few months ago with i5 processor + 8 gigs ram) and our hard drive went bad and dell replaced it. Then a little later we had an issue with our windows genuine activation saying its not genuine when we had windows 7 and it blocked the admin account on the sign in screen (only account). Meaning you can't do anything, there are no other options, no option to enter key code or make genuine or anything like that. 
So I reinstalled Windows 7 (Dell CD) + downloaded drivers (except sata drivers which it didn't show it needed in device manager and I was pushed to finish quickly) from dell  today, thought all was well. It showed genuine and activated, etc... 
Employee upgraded to windows 10. Guess what? The login screen when you turn on the computer has once again blocked the admin account which is the only account. What is going on and how do I fix it? This is ridiculous. I can't even login to try to fix it.

edit: forgot to mention that this computer was added to a domain at work, not sure if that makes a difference or not

when I try to login to either of the accounts, it flashed for a second and then goes back to the login screen. I did an offline defender scan and remove a few adware, but I don't think they were the cause.
Is there any way I could monitor the login process and see what's failing.

I have xp pro on my family's older dell, and it is working great. There is one annoyance i would like to fix though. When i turn on the computer, it boots up to the screen where you get to pic what user account you want to use. Well i only have one account (w/ no password), is there a way to make it automaically use the one account. I have xp home on another pc and it does this (only one account so it just automatically uses it). I am pretty sure there has to be an option in the accounts settings, but i cannot find it. Any help would be much apprecieated. Thanks.

I think from "run" in the start menu, type: "control userpasswords2" (no quotes)

I think there is an option in there to disable the login screen. I can't confirm right now because I'm not on an XP box.

Hi, guys i'm having a problem with my Dell xps 200 desktop computer. When ever I would turn it on the dell logo and stuff would come up but not the login screen where the backround is blue and a little window where you logg on. Something is preventing you from booting to desktop. The machine starts normally, then fails to get to the Windows logon screen. Correct ?

Try booting to Safe Mode by tapping the "F8" key every second or so as soon as you turn the machine on.

From Safe Mode, navigate "Start>Run>(type)"cmd">(then type)"chkdsk /r" and answer yes if it wants to run at reboot. Then reboot. Report results here.

I've been looking around and cannot seem to find a reason why my login screen for XP Professional isn't showing up.

Instead of the login screen when I boot up my computer I get a prompt box where I can enter the user name and password. Everything works correctly but I want the login screen, not a prompt box.

I'm suspicious that a file or something got deleted and is causing this problem, but I don't know what to do about it or where to begin looking. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

xp instructions:

go to control panel - user accounts

in the "Pick a task" section click on Change the way users log on or off

make sure Use the Welcome screen is ticked

Hello there. I am in big trouble. Since 3 days my pc has been showing a blue screen just after the boot screen. When I tried tapping the keys, nothing is happening. When I move the mouse, the mouse is only shown in the blue screen. I have tried every possible way I know, safe-mode, system restore, pc reset......... In all of then it shows the respective operation was unsuccessfully. It would of great help and a big blessing to me, if someone help me out of this ordeal.

Get hold of another working computer.
Use the Tech Bench link below to download YOUR version of Windows 10.
Burn it to a bootable DVD or USB.
Take the bootable media and use it for a Clean Install.

Download and burn an iso file to a bootable media:

Scroll down to Select Edition > click the pointer at the right and select your version of Windows 10 > click Confirm.
Click the pointer and select Language > make sure you pick the same language the computer is now running > click Confirm
Select the bit version, 32 or 64-bit. Make sure you select the same bit version as the computer is now running.
At the bottom, click the pointer next to Save > click Save As > navigate to a folder of your choice > click the chosen folder > click Save
The iso will start downloading to your chosen folder.
Once iso is downloaded, go to the folder > right click at the iso file > click Burn disc image > follow the prompts.

Take the bootable media to your computer and do a Clean Install

hi i have a toshiba satellite laptop
and when i turn on the computer it starts
normal but when its about to get to the login
screen it turns black and only the cursor is present
and i tried to turn it off numerous times but no luck
and when its in safe mode it just says safe mode on the corners and in
the top center it says microsoft (r) windows (r) (build 6001: service pack 1)

I have a compaq presario desk top which uses windows 7 and recently when i log onto my computer i get the usual Compaq Logo splash screen but then after that instead of it going to the starting windows screen i get a bios revision screen for a few seconds and then it goes to the starting windows scree. I did recently upgrade the bios but this revision screen is showing up on every login for me. Does anyone have a clue about this ? Ive owned pc's since 2001 and have never had this issue before.

I posted this problem a few months ago, and we were able to fix it temporarily by running Avast, SuperSpyware Blaster, etc... in safe mode. But now that's not even working.

We can't login to anyone's account from the login screen. The mouse pointer doesn't even turn into a hand when we mouse-over an icon, and we can't even shut down the computer. We can only login to an administrator account in safe mode--and can only turn the computer on and off by using the power button

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to run a Spybot and Adaware scan in safe mode. i have 3 users accounts on my Xp home machine all are administrator accounts, but when i boot in safe mode only one user account shows up along with an Administrator account.I want to scan all 3 accounts in Safe Mode.any ideas?

When I try to login in some websites, a page full of these symbols http://i.imgur.com/lzfQh.jpg
show up in my screen, this website was one of the few I could login to, please help!

I'm using windows, already tried opera, chrome and firefox, they all show the same thing.

I keep getting a green screen and my laptop is green. Some help to why this is happening as when I sign in its green as well. One day it was fine now green plus I tried repairing it and no luck. I have a hp touch smart tm2. If I can post a picture I will try.

I have an odd problem I've not been able to fix. I have a laptop from a friend of a friend, so I don't know much of the history of it.

Essentially, when started normally the laptop hits the windows 7 welcome screen, but instead of displaying a list of users, it flashes again and again. The cursor shows the busy circle next to it for a split second, then the screen goes black, then the screen comes back with the busy cursor.

The system starts normally in safe mode.

I've tried to disable all of the services and startup items with MSConfig, but that's made no difference. I've also run sfc /scannow which on it's first pass detected and fixed an item, but on subsequent passes sees no problems.

After that was a bust I decided to try to revert to a system restore point. There are several the choose from, but once selected the restore doesn't actually take place. The system simply shuts down after preparing to restore, and when restarted in safe mode states that it was unable to start the shadow copy service (which to the best of my understanding can't be started in safe mode)

Any ideas?

This has been an issue with every version of Windows since .. probably Win2k. Maybe earlier. I just never got around to looking for a solution (though at this point, there probably isn't one).

Here's what happens:You have enabled password protection on your screensaver
The screensaver goes active (doesn't matter if you locked your computer or if it idle-timed into the SS)
You perform an action (wiggle the mouse, hit a key, whatever) that causes the screensaver to stop and present you with a login-prompt
For a brief moment before the login-prompt is presented your desktop along with all running apps are visible

Although I don't have objectionable wallpaper or apps or such, I dislike that anyone that bumps my mouse gets a free "peak" at whatever is running on my desktop while I'm away.

Does anyone know of a way to tighten it down so that the very instant that the screensaver stops the login-prompt is displayed?

I keep finding solutions for the issue with a black screen before login or after login and to use the task manager, but my problem is a little different.

I can log in using my pin, and press ctrl+alt+dlt to get the option to bring up the task manager. However, when i click it... no task manager pops up!

I'm at a loss, been in hold with Microsoft for over an hour now. Please help!

I had similar problems when I upgraded my desktop.

Thankfully I had a full backup of my windows partition to revert back. Ultimately I ended up formatting the partition installing Windows 7, activating it with my OEM license, and upgrading from there.

I then moved files from the backup, to the Windows 10 installation.


I tried for a couple days, many different ways to get things working properly, but ultimately had to format the system.

I determined my problem was caused by programs installed on my initial OS (motherboard utilities, and other hardware related programs) weren't compatible with Windows 10.

I recently updated to the November patch update and the first option that I came across was showing the windows background on the login screen. It is currently enabled with my own custom background but when I try to login it shows the default Windows background logo. What could be the problem here? Thanks

Hi,

I need to have my computer log off my account and to the login screen after about 15 minutes or so of being idle or inactive.

I built a brand new PC this weekend with Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit.

I followed the steps in the tutorial at this website

automatic logout after inactivity/idle

But when I came into work this morning, my computer never logged off and it was still at my desktop as if nothing had happened.

If I go into my task scheduler and actually run this schedule from there, it logs me off perfectly as I would want it to. But it's not running automated for some reason.

Do any of you have any recommendations as to why this wouldn't be working and if not, do you have any other recommendations or methods I could use to get the computer to log off of my account after being idle?

I can't set it for a certain time, it has to be after being idle or inactive.

Did you go through all the Tabs of Task Scheduler as Noel showed? Since it never started it sounds like it may not be running under your account when it runs scheduled or has the wrong password, or something like that.

What I would do is create a simple batch file that writes a line to a .txt file each time it runs, then get that working under Task Scheduler. Once you have that, substitue shutdown /l /t 30 and see if that works. If it does, you'll see a popup window saying your computer will be shutting down in 30 seconds.

You may have to set it for 30 idle minutes as Noel mentions instead of 15.

One of the users is now missing from the main login screen.

The account still exists. At least, the files are all there under /documents and settings/, and if I try to create a new account with that name, Win XP says that the account already exists.

How can I get my user back on the main login screen?

Have you tried going to Control Panel>User Accounts>Change the Way Users Log On. You must be the Administrator to do this.

I did a Comodo Firewall and Windows Update today, when it rebooted, I have an account named localhost (password proctected, admin). I don't recall this account showing before, so I'm just a little nervous. I'm also using the MVPS (I think) host file.

I have the following setup:
Vista Ultimate, SP2
Intel Celeron D, 3.33 GHz
1.50GB RAM
32-bit
AVG 2011 (updated daily)
Comodo Firewall v5.3.175888.1227

Any suggestions/ideas?

Hi all,

I have a very weird situation going on on my login screen: basically, the username appears twice and, if I click on the second 'username', I get a different login screen but it logs into the same account anyway?
I have taken a couple of screenshots, as they better describe my issue.

I've built a new PC last week, and installed Windows 10 to it (upgraded from a legitimate 7). Now I've made several accounts for me and someone else (work, play etc) and now I have an issue logging in.

Whenever I (re)boot the PC, it boots straight into the last used account rather than to the login screen. Is there anywhere I can adjust this? Navigating through the settings has gotten a lot less straightforward after 7.
Any help appreciated.

Hi,
I was not able to find 'Enable Guest Account' option in User Settings. I tried running a command to activate guest through cmd but i could'nt see that appearing on my log on screen even after logging out/Restarting.

Microsoft has disabled this feature for reasons of RAAAAAAAWR and such. I'll teach you how to create a local account with no password.
First, navigate to Settings. You can do this one of many ways: go to the Start Menu and use the dedicated button that's always present, go to All Apps and find it, use the Quick Action present in the Action Center, or press [Win] + [I]. In Settings, you'll want to go to Accounts, then navigate to Family & other users. There are two categories: Your Family and Other Users. Go to Other Users and click Add someone else to this PC. It'll bring up the menu to put in their information. You'll want to press at the bottom The person I want to add doesn't have an email address. This will bring up a menu to create a Microsoft Account. In the same place at the bottom you'll want to press Add a user without a Microsoft Account.
Now you can create a local account. If you don't want this account to be password-protected, simply don't put in a password.

taken out of Sleep mode and my Win7 Pro Welcome Screen has No User Account Showing and nothing else to click on either. i could force the pc to shut down and restart it, which would no doubt fix this "glitch", but this is my biz computer and i have many dozens of client files open and some may not be fully saved. so doing a force restart would cost me a couple hours of work.

this is on a Fujitsu Tablet PC, but that should have no bearing. it is a convertible with touch screen (slate mode) and keyboard...no optical drive.

any ideas??

Hi,

Please can anyone help, not long purchased a new HP laptop with Windows 10 Home Edition pre-installed. Going well until recently has started to hang, on the e-mail log-in and password page - got another Outlook user to try too; basically the same. I, get the black screen which looks like it's trying to open the desktop and from recollection you get the arrow cursor. I Can get into it via the Safe Mode and all the settings are pretty much as they were out the box.

After looking on the internet and checked a couple of things to troubleshoot - I took in the Device Manager and noticed under Monitor that there was one with a yellow rectangle and exclamation mark under 'Generic PnP Monitor'. I think it's possibly this causing the issue. My question would be as I can only get into the laptop via Safe Mode - and can't get internet access this way. If, I uninstall and re-boot, will this fix this issue i.e it will re-install itself from bootup and will I still get a screen showing as it's a laptop. Apologies, if this is a long thread - this is my first proper dealings with Windows 10 . Thanks

Few days ago, I pasted a new file called ""uxtheme.dll" downloaded from net in C:\WINDOWS\system32.There was already a file by that name so i renamed the old file as "uxtheme.dll.old" and pasted the new file.Few days after that i installed Style XP Software(a software to customize desktop, screensaver, themes, logon screens, bootscreens). I changed the logon screen from its default. I restarted the system. Now i cud not see the login screen and i am unable to open the computer.

So, using the recovery console (XP SP2 CD), I tried to repair the Windows. In the process, I thought i should delete the login screen and deleted it using some commands(DOS Commands).I also deleted the whole "Resources" file (C:\Windows\Resources) using some dos commands.

Still my computer was not loging in.

So, I referred to an article from Microsoft(support.microsoft.com/kb/310396) which
I was confused. So i saw an article in Microsoft (support.microsoft.com/kb/310396). The problem in that article was similar to mine and i followed the instructions given there.

Still am not able to open .

I have huge data (Crucial-- its not just games /songs) in C: drive. I thought i shud not loose the whole data. So, I did not reinstall XP SP2.

If U can pl help me, i shall be very grateful to U.

Have you tried to boot into Safe Mode yet? If not, try that. As the PC is powering up, start tapping the F8 continuously until you see the Safe Mode menu. Choose "Safe Mode" from the list. If you didn't password-protect your Administrator account, you might be able to start things in Safe Mode using that account, and from Add/Remove Programs remove your theme-altering programs. From the Start/Run box, you could also try typing msconfig ...And in that program disable theme software from running at startup.

Should that not work, see if you can get System Restore to run & use a restore point from before your theme-altering episode. Try the following instructions from the Microsoft Knowledge Base article --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

I think you might want to make backups as soon as you can, too, if you have data that you cannot easily replace.

I tried popping in the XP CD but it's not recognizing my Windows already installed on the partition so no recovery console, no option for repair install or anything. Trying to install Windows on that partition installs it in C:\WINDOWS.0 folder.

This is urgent, I really need access to my account. Help much appreciated.

If you try to install Windows without formatting and choosing a different folder, Windows will install to C:\Windows.0
If you want to repair your install Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console.
Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Seatools, WD DataLifeGuard or Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

Hey All,

Small question about the login screen. I have several user accounts setup on my Windows 8 PC and I would like to change the order in which they are displayed on screen. Does anyone know if this is possible or are they just listed in the order they are created in?

I have two user accounts on my PC - Staff and Administrator. I loaded Win7 a few days ago and created the Staff account. Earlier today, I changed the Staff account from an Administrator to a Standard account. I was logged on as Staff when I did it. I then logged off and back on and when I did, only the Administrator account was on the login screen.

The Staff account still exists under Local Users and Groups. I disabled it, restarted and then reenabled it but no change. I don't think that it had a password when I deleted it - I don't add the password until I am done with the machine to make it easier - so many reboots.

The PC has Win7 Pro x86 and is on a workgroup. Any help would be appreciated.

I had to do an Hp reset of my Notebook PC because of irrational behaviour. Everything was extremely slow and pages were jumping to other pages. After the Reset I now get an error message on my lock screen login page that says "This administrator account has been disabled please refer to administrator. I am the only administrator or User period on my PC. I can then click ok and login to my same regular administrator account. I cannot however change my lock screen photo any longer. Before the Reset I had a photo there. When doing the Reset I saved all my personal files and data.

when my windows 7 32-bit laptop starts up and displays the login screen there is an account that it seems to want to default to called ./user

when the OS was loaded that was the original user account. since then that account has been deleted, however it is still showing up on the login screen. i believe at one point someone may have deleted this account from the user accounts on this laptop, as well as the folders associated with the profile.

does anyone know how to manage this annoying screen?

The other day, a freind of mine was on my computer checking his email, but he didnt check them all, so whenever I log on or off the login screen says I have 13 unread messages (on his hotmail account)
How can I get rid of that message? He likely wont be on this computer again, so I dont want that message staying there forever.

I have a HP G62-340US Notebook. Recently last month (December 2013) whenever I leave my laptop on for extended periods of time with no activity in goes into sleep mode (black screen) and when woken up (moving the mouse etc.) it takes me to the account log in page. An intermediate stage it goes through is I'll move the mouse, the keyboard with light up (wifi button has a light dial to indicate its status, caps lock lights up, and the power key lights up). It takes about 5 to 10 seconds while "loading" before I get to the actual log in page. However, recently it stopped doing that. When I move the mouse to take it out of sleep mode, the keys light and the computer freezes will trying to get to the log in page. It is a black screen before it goes to the default log in page (sky blue background). The computer at this point is completely unresponsive. I've tried powering down manually by holding the power key, then trying to turn it on, but it doesn't get beyond that screen. The only remedy seems to be to unplug the charger and wait for the laptop to die (takes 90 minutes). At that point, I can turn it back on, and it will load to the login screen without freezing. This has happened 4 times since december. As you can assume, its a big inconvenience because a lot of my work is on my laptop and to wait for it to die and then turn on is time consuming. Not a good idea to zero out your battery (run to 0%). If it was me I'd remove the battery then pull the plug. But even doing that is unadvisable.
 
 
I disable my laptop's sleep mode when plugged in. I just don't see the point if it's getting power from the wall.

Hi,
Is there any way that I can hide the Administrator account during the login screen but at the same time access it whenever I need it.

Like if the user logs off, he should not see the Administrator account, only his standard account.

But I will also need to access the Administrator account from time to time so it should be accessible.
Any idea how I can do this?

Things were much easier during XP where one just had to put in the Username to access their account.

You can still do this through group policy. Don't remember the policy name off hand, but you disable viewing of last user to log on, and you are then forced to enter in the User name And Password each time for every user.

Hi Everyone!

I noticed that I have an additional account shown at my login screen. It's not a user account I created, and it doesn't show up under Control Panel>User Accounts. The only thing that shows up in the User Accounts page is my user account (shown as admin), and a guest account (shown as off).

I'm wondering if I should be worried about this second user account shown at the login screen, or if there was a way to remove/hide this 2nd user account from showing up at the login screen? I'm not sure how it came/shown up in the first place. I'm hoping someone can explain this issue to me and/or help! Thanks!

Your forum system specs indicate that you use Avast for your antivirus app. However, did you ever use ESET? If so, then please see this post. If not, then use Windows (file) Explorer to see is there is a user folder (C;\Users\username) for this additional account. If there is a user profile folder for this additional account, then the date on that folder and its sub-folders might give you a clue about how long the user account has been active.

I have two machines that I've installed Windows 7 Professional 32-bit on and I'm having the same problem on both. When I turn on my computer it goes to the login welcome screen and stops. I have to click on my picture for it to continue logging into the desktop. I have no password and only one admin account set up on either one. I tried setting up the auto login using netplwiz in the search bar but it doesn't do anything. I set up a password and set up the autologin and it didn't work on either machine. So now I'm back to no password and in need of help. Anyone got any ideas?

I have after a long time searching ended up here on this forum.

What I want to do is simply to remove the picture & frame on my login screen, only the password, my name, switch user should be left on the screen.

To clarify, I don't want to:
Remove the whole login screen.
Remove password protection.
Remove anything else except for that picture and frame.

Thats pretty much it, I would be really thankful if somebody could help me with this because I'm close to changing to linux just to get rid of it .

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP. This weekend Avast warned me I had trojans so it wanted to run boot scan. I let it run and it said it found a few things which I told it to delete. After that my computer would boot up to user accounts and then when I put in my password it would say loading personal setting and then go to blue screen. I went into safe mode and ran spybot, adware, deleted cookies, temp files and ran anti-malware scan, disk check, defrag, disk cleanup. Still no luck. I have attached the logs below. I hope they are correct. I really need help. This is my work computer and I do the books for my company and can't do anything until this is fixed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can set crtl-alt-del in the local security policy under administrative tools in the control panel. You can also choose not to display the last user name... see the choice right above the highlighted one in the attached image.

If both are selected you are presented with blank user name and password fields after crtl-alt-del.

Hello...I apologize if this has been posted before...I don't exactly know what search terms to use to describe the problem to find an existing thread.

I am involved in prepping several Panasonic Toughpads for deployment in our environment w/ Windows 8.1 installed. While prepping, we are logging in with domain accounts that have some domain admin privileges for various setups on the local machine.

Upon completion of setup, logging in as the assigned domain user, which, on these systems, will be a local admin. However, after a few seconds, where the account name is displayed on the top right corner of the start menu, it shows the logged in domain username--as it should--then quickly changes to show the previously logged in domain admin user's name.

This is phenomenon is occurring for myself and two of my coworkers who are using isolated domain admin logins assigned to them.

Troubleshooting that has already happened: restarted the system, deleted the domain admin's user folder and assoicated registry key in the ProfileList to no avail. Logged in as yet a different user, and back to the assigned user's account but still showing my domain admin name in the account name. Is this getting circular yet?

Any thoughts?

I have two accounts on my Win10 device. A User account, which works fine, and an Administrator account, which has a problem: when I try to log into the Admin account, the screen I get is totally black. I can Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up task manager, and from there I can launch things, but when I launch explorer, no joy--the screen remains black.
The funny thing is that this does not happen in my User account.
NOTE: I did not see this behavior before I installed today's (Tuesday's) update for Windows 10.
Details: Machine is a Lenovo X140e (AMD quad core) with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. Windows 10 Professional 64-bit.
This isn't the end of the world for me, but it does make certain things that I'd like to do considerably more difficult...

OK--just wanted to come back and let you know that this cleared up after a hard reboot.
Also, after Win10 installed, I got a message on my Lenovo's camera saying that additional work was needed. The camera acted completely dead. I decided to try the battery trick and so uninstalled the camera and then scanned for hardware changes. Ta-da! Microsoft's driver installed and everything began to work again.

When starting my PC the user account name from a deleted user account appears as the default login account.

This user account does not appear when looking at the manage user account screens as it was deleted by the account holder (the former owner of the PC).

How do I stop this deleted user account name appearing at login?

When I start the tablet the login screen asks for my pin. I want to be able to automatically login without entering a pin or password. To do that I use netplwiz and uncheck the option to require a password for login. So far so good.

But when the tablet restarts I am presented with a login screen that now shows two accounts, my MS account and what appears to be a local account but with the same name. If I then reverse the process and enable the "require a password" option in netplwiz there is only one account shown on the login screen but then I have to use a pin or password.

How do I remove that second local account on the login screen and then login automatically? There is only one account listed in the user account settings page.

The question is straight forward. I have one user account and one administrator account. Only the administrator account shows up on my login screen. I have my user account set up to automatically log in when my PC start's so it's not that big of a deal at the moment. I have windows XP home installed but I modified the registry so it thinks it's XP pro so I could run terminal services on it. When I connect to my PC with my iPod using RDP my user account is automatically logged out and there in lies the problem, I can't log back in without rebooting.

Is there any way to get my account to show back up in the login screen?

I am attempting to get my built in Administrator user account to show up on the login screen.

When I look at the properties, I do not see anywhere where I can assign a password to it. Nor, am I able to activate it to appear on the login screen. (Perhaps there is a different way altogether to login to it?)

The user account that I am using has administrator priviledges and shows up in the Administrators group along with Administrator. So, I think it should be the same thing as using the actual Administrator account.

However, when I try to grant permissions for users on another computer on the LAN, the Local Area Connection Properties box does not open up the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

And that is where I am stuck. I have no idea as to how to get into item and am wondering if I need to login to the Actual Administrator user account.

You can add Administrator to the Welcome screen using regedit. You would open regedit then navigate to this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>WindowsNT>Current Version>Winlogon>>Special Accounts>User Lists.

Create a new DWORD value and name it “Administrator“ (without the quotes). Then modify the DWORD value making it '''1".

Administrator will show on the Welcome screen after a reboot.

Hi

My client has got three user accounts on her machine. Admin account, her normal account and another account.

When trying to log on using her regular account, on the screen where it shows the thumbnails and where you have the option to view the password hint, it changes back automatically to the normal standard login window with the Username as Aministrator listed in the field.

My client is running Windows XP with SP2 at least.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

To start off with, first of all I've got 3 computers: my Windows 10 laptop [which is relatively new], a W10 upgraded desktop, and an aging, slow Windows 7 laptop - which my parents are using.

To help my parents out I recently tried to create a new user account on my Windows 10 laptop. It 'takes longer than expected' to do it, but it's done and everything seems fine. All I do is install Firefox on it, and that's about it.

But when I turn it on again a login to my parents user accout, the screen's blank, and I can ctr+alt+del to get the Task Manager up, but that's it. Creating an explorer.exe doesn't work, and restarting the current explorer.exe does nothing.

I've tried Googling around for answers, but a lot of them doesn't seem to apply to my situation exactly.

Any help would be appreciated.

- How can I know whats the right path/directory, where a DWORD/registry key needs to placed?

I dont expect you to answer the bundle of last questions, since they do not belong to my thread initiation - so it is still just about the account picture.
Nevertheless I would deeply appreciate any buzzwords or hints you may have in mind, that help me to get a bit deeper into the adressed matter, as I am keen to learn and improve.

Latest build new install on HP laptop. So far, my impression has been very positive. One small issue: On my login screen when booting, it defaults to "Other User". I have to switch it to my account and login. I have checked user accounts and cannot find the other account.
Is there a way to fix this issue?

System has 3 accounts: Administrator password protected, and two standard user accounts. The guest account is off.
On both startup or "swittch user" the login screen only shows the system admin account icon and the password field is waiting for input. Although the two standard user accounts still show up in the "manage users" control panel utility.
 
Problems started as "the user profile service failed the logon". Logon screen showed all three accounts, but one of the stanrd user accounts couldn't be successfully logged into.
Followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 method #1 to edit registry and rename/copy/edit the S-1-5 keys. There was a S-1-5 .bak for the problem account. After editing the registry, and upon reboot only the system administrator account appeared. 
 
Used windows restore to try to go back before the problems. The first restore point I picked failed to "install" on reboot, reported that either the restore point had problems or anti-virus program was blocking the restore. Disabled AVG, still wouldn't "apply" the restore. So I picked an earlier point in time, that restore installed without errors. The system has been rebooted several times, windows has applied patches on one of the reboots.
 
I tried a few other things and got non repeatable results. Once created a new standard user account. The "other user" logon icon appeared for "switch user". I tried login into one of the standard user accounts and it succeeded. I have since... Read more

Hi drewp, according to the microsoft link you've just followed, there are certain options to take before using the registry edit as mentioned before the 3 steps accordingly. If you haven't removed completely AVG, please do so as it could be the problem in the very beginning. Use the AVG removal tool http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities just to make sure then check the difference. Another step to take is to run system file checker and then see if any corrupt and repaired files from the text output log. Check also the user profile service is in default or automatic. If nothing happens, move the profile account as described in method#2 from the provided MS link.

How do I stop this deleted user account name appearing at login?

I have WIN 10 Pro on a Dell laptop.

I have been unable to find a way to show ALL accounts, User, (built in) Administrator, Guest account, etc at WIN 10 login/sign on. The only account I can get to show in my user account (which has administrator status).
I have successfully used the cmd ?net user administrator / active:yes, net user administrator * ? and successfully assigned a password, and the net user guest / active:yes command. I restart or power down and restart and the only account that shows is the single user account. As far as I can tell issueing the above commands should make the Administrator and Guest accounts show on the login/signon screen. I have tried a couple of other options I found on line but without success.

I must be missing something. I did see a couple of comments about ?User group. Home group? but could not figure out what was being asked. My Dell laptop is used at home, wireless connected to my router and the internet. I do not remember being asked any questions about ?home group? or ?groups? at installation on WIN 10.

Would appreciate any (detail) instructions or links showing how to make all the WIN 10 PRO accounts to show at logon.

I have a domain setup at home, and after joining a PC to the domain and migrating profiles to the domain profiles, the login screen account list only shows one user (the last to login) and Other User.

I have already used the method in this thread:

The PC now goes straight to the list of users, however only the last domain user is shown. If I log into another and then log out of that, the user list now shows the new user and Other User, but not the previous. It's rather annoying for my wife and I to constantly have to type our domain user name just to login. I searched and didn't see anything about this. Any ideas?

Is it possible to not have my email address visible on the login screen. I still want to use my Microsoft account as Windows 8.1 isn't worth the effort with just a local login. Currently the way the Microsoft login works,
every laptop user effectively gives away their name, email and (likeness, if they are photographed) every time they open the lid to anyone in the vicinity. In the age of phishing scams where people are looking for this info it seems like they are catering
to those people rather than their users.
Note- already changed my name in my Microsoft account to gobbely gook but the email issue still remains. 

Any and all help much appreciated

Unless you made a typo here the command is incorrect. There should not be a space between / and active so if you want to enable built in administrator with password = "Secret123" you would enter:

net user administrator Secret123 /active:yes

You can then sign out (no need to reboot) and you should see the built in Administrator on the log-in screen.

The guest account doesn't exist any more in Windows 10. You could add an account to use as a guest account and make it part of the guests group if you want as described here Add Guest Account in Windows 10 Windows 10 User Accounts Tutorials but it is pretty limited. Users that are part of guests group can't open store apps for example.

My pc sits where I walk by it everyday. My screen saver is a digital clock.
I walk by it today and it is sitting at the login screen with a new user Icon.
The icon is listed as "David" as the user. I don't know any David's nor have
ever had a David as a user on this pc. There is no David when I navigate to
C:/Windows/Users. Nor is there a user David in user profiles. I looked at the
System Security Log and have alot of Event ID #4625. I don't know if this mean
anything or not. What should I be looking for. Have I been Hacked?

There would only be a folder structure for the account if there's been a log in. Right-click on Computer and select Manage, then select Local Users.... See if there's a David there, double-click on it and see what User Groups he's a member of. Especially if he's an admin it should be deleted asap.

When you enter the login screen, one of the user account options is pre-highlighted so that if you simply press "enter" instead of selecting one with the mouse or arrow keys, it'll attempt to log you into that account. I've the need recently to create a standard user account, which for some incredibly frustrating reason is always pre-selected instead of my administrator account (the one I use). I have no idea how to change this so that the administrator account is the one pre-selected.

Yea this is a stupid thing to complain about. But I've gotten used to logging in one way, and it's super annoying every time I forget and try the old way. Especially if I'm not in the best state of mind lol.

Oh, and for some reason creating a Guest account doesn't do this. Admin keeps priority. But Standard users are evidently more important than the admin >.>

I booted my Windows 10 and I recieve a blue screen to login to my Hotmail account. it doesn't accept my password.
Just solid blue screen (not of deathe) that has my hotmail user name and a place to login. It doesn't accept my hotmail password. Just says it's incorrect. Never had this pop up before and can't get beyond it.

This should be an easy problem to solve, but I have been unable to figure it out...

On the windows login screen, right below my login name, there is a little note that says how many new mail messages I have- This however was set up by my ex-boyfriend under his hotmail account. I'd like to change it to one of my accounts if possible, (I primarily use a university based webmail account), and if I can't change it to anything but hotmail or msn then I would like to remove it.

I haven't been able to figure out where to find this setting.

Any ideas or help would be most appreciated.

Hi All, As the title states - New Windows 10 Update is not letting me access my desktop after I login to my account. I am just staring at a black screen with my cursor on it. I have tried to open up task manager, but nothing happens.  Any suggestions? Help would be greatly appreciated!Mike

How do i change to one of my other 3 accounts?
Change user doesnt work, just auto login.

When i turn on my computer, in the step when windows ask you for choose one User to login... the option "Other User" to introduce my domain user account and pass is not showing.

Also, the witch option is not showing after log in with another account, i have to use the sig out option, this is not a big problem, in fact i dont care, i just mention this because maybe have relation with the first problem.
I need the option Other User... Anyone knows how to fix this?

Hi everyone and merry Christmas!

I followed the procedure found on the web, I entered "netplwiz" and did uncheck ?Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".
There is no password set.
THere is just one user/account which is obviously also the administrator.
(the Account tab shows also HomeGroupUser$, but I guess is a default option...)

the point is that when I switch the pc on, I have to click on the icon of the user account in order to see the desktop. Is there any chance I can login automatically without even clicking on the user icon?

Go ahead and create a password for your user account, then do the tutorial below again to enter the new password and set your user account to be logged into automatically at startup.

I'm the only user on this laptop and my admin account was called "HybridPC" and I disabled the windows login screen. (Turn computer on and goes right to desktop). One day the welcome screen popped up out of nowhere and I had to login. I tried disabling the login screen to where it was before and now I've screwed things up royally. I cannot login to my original admin account or find it. All the files are still there on my C:\Users\HybridPC folder, but I've lost the profile and user.
I think I messed things up further by trying to create/delete other new user accounts. I've attached 3 screenshots showing my C:users folder, User account screen and the netplwiz.exe profiles.

I've been adding/deleting and can't get back to square one. I don't see my user at all on the welcome screen.

Sorry for the length of this post but I think it needs explaining.

I bought this laptop for a gift to my grandson about three years ago. Against my wishes, he has used it primarily to play high usage PC games. About 6 months ago it was hardly working anymore, viruses, malware, you name it.

I did a complete factory restore but he set it up to open with his hotmail user account on the "Lock Screen" in Windows 8.1, but he did give me his how hotmail email address and password so I can login. Well, within about two months later he had all the same issues back again and so he just quit using the laptop completely.

He gave it back to me and I cleaned everything up again (without doing a factory recovery) and also upgraded it from the original Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

Everything is working perfectly, it's very fast now and I love it.

Only issue I can see is if he (my grandson) deletes or changes his hotmail account I won't be able to login and also his emails are available for me to read (but I don't) and I don't use his email account. I use a webmail account of my own.

As I mentioned earlier, this laptop is running and set up perfectly for me with this one exception.

Without doing a complete factory recover, how can I chnage this laptop from requiring his (my grandsons) hotmail address and password to no login being required at all (as I am the only user now) or to run with a local account (as I believe it is referred to)?

I would like help solving a mystery.
I set up a new Dell Optiplex 3020 which shipped with Windows 10 Pro.
I bypassed the option to set up the user with a Microsoft Account (The owner does not have a microsoft account and I did not create one at that time.) and set up a Local User Account, the owner's FirstName only, with no password for the owner of the computer.
I also set up a Technical User local administrator account with a password "just in case." (I am glad I did.)
I unchecked and turned off everything that had to do with the Cloud and sharing information with Microsoft.
I installed the software, antivirus etc. including Windows Live Mail with an account with the ISP which the owner needed on the computer. I registered the computer using the owner's first and last names as well a registering the antivirus software account. In this process I restarted the computer several times with no problems logging back in with the local user account.
The computer ran updates twice during the setup process.
The next day the login screen was showing the owner's full name with the non-microsoft account e-mail address requiring a password for login. Since the owner did not have a Microsoft account nor a Microsoft account password logging in was not possible.
I tried the e-mail password that was used in Windows Live Mail to log in and I tried no password at all. Neither one worked.

So I originally started with a local account but then signed into the store with a MS account. I changed the setting where users are required to enter a password through netplwiz (like this) and making a password not required after waking from sleep. But after doing this and restarting/shutting down, I'm not automatically logged in like I should be, instead I'm presented with a login screen saying the password I entered was incorrect, even though I haven't even entered one yet, as well as two accounts showing up in the bottom left (like this).

It's acting like the local account is still there and is attempting to log me into it. I've looked in the Users folder, it's just the default, mine, and public. Under accounts in control panel it's only mine that shows up. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Using win10 Pro, this was a clean install.
EDIT~ Just solved it :s

Hit the winkey and type "netplwiz" and hit enter.
If you have the box "Users must enter a username and password..." unchecked, check it and hit apply, otherwise don't do anything.
Now uncheck the same box and hit apply again, now in the new window that pops up, change the username to your microsoft email that you used to sign into the Windows Store. For the password put in your MS email password.
Once you've done that hit Okay and restart, it should automatically log you in like normal.

By default the box has the original local account name which is what screws things up.

After a clean install of Windows 7 and installing both current NVidia (GeForce 7800GS AGP) drivers and monitor driver (ACER W223X) I was able to get Windows & to run in my monitor's native resolution (1680x1050) but no matter what resolution I run in I get some weird effects. When in the 'Login Screen' I get short black lines scattered about the screen and the controls are all corrupted. Once logged in and on the desktop the graphics are all good with no issues at all. That is until I try to do something that requires Windows to toss me the "User Account Control" dialog.
The dialog is corrupted (see attached) except for the "No" button which is obviously the default and therefore has focus. As I move the mouse over the "Yes" button it gains focus and it becomes clear and visible. The background, although dimmed, displays just fine. If I drag the dialog around the screen, the "No" button leaves copies of itself like mousetracks. When I click yes or no and the dialog closes, the display goes back to normal. This occured both during Windows installation and after it was completed. I just assumed that once the updated drivers were installed it would go away. NOT!
I am guessing Windows is changing the display resolution when dimming the screen or in the login screen. ?? I have exhausted myself trying Vista drivers, XP drivers, Windows default drivers... I have tried about 10 different versions and still no change. Suggestions. Is this an... Read more

Video card memory gone bad maybe? Overlap conflict between video and system memory. Possibly need a updated video driver?

I have an extra account showing on my login screen called "Please logon and initialize your device". I don't know how it got there and when I click on it a smaller message under this account name says 'Press ESC for the Welcome Screen. However it actually just returns to the main logon screen. Also it does not show up on the Manage User Accounts screen so I can't remove it that way. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this account (error).

The problem is solved. It turns out that my laptop has a fingerprint scanner and it needs to be activated when more than one user accounts exist.It allows a user to login in by fingerprint scan. Way cool!
