windows explorer: want file name not thumbnails

Question: windows explorer: want file name not thumbnails

I'm getting more and more used to Windows 7. Generally I like to see everything as files and folders; I don't care to see photos as thumbnails. I like to see file name (with extension), size, date, etc. How do I do this in windows 7.

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: windows explorer: want file name not thumbnails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I got a new computer with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I find it very annoying that in all the Open File dialog boxes and even Windows Explorer there does not seem to be a selection under the View menu to show thumbnails of image files. Even when I select Contents and highlight the file it still only shows a generic icon. Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help

Hello David, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have thumbnail previews enabled.Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable
If you do, then double check to make sure that you have Windows Photo Viewer set as the default program with all of it's associations.Default Programs - Set a Program's Default Associations

Hello,

I noticed yesterday that after using File Explorer for a short while, it stops showing any thumbnails, and only shows a plain white icon, not even the default icon for a file type. I tried all the usual methods for showing thumbnails, but to no avail.

Then, after a short while, it just stops working altogether. If I try to change folder, I get the message "Working on it..." and a green (lack of) progress bar in the address bar, but nothing happens. It just sits there and refuses to show me the contents of any folder, even "This PC".

The only way I have found to solve this is to restart the machine. As you can imagine, this isn't very practical!

Anyone any ideas? It's making it really hard to do any work. Thanks.

Answer:Thumbnails disappear in File Explorer, then Explorer freezes

Hi,
1. Do you have any system restore points or disk images you can use to restore your PC to how it was on a date prior to this problem developing?
(We strongly and repeatedly recommend people use disk imaging.. it means you can often recover your PC to a working state without assistance, quickly and efficiently without stress).

2. As an interim measure, try using a different file manager.

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

I've ran Disk Cleaner to delete the thumbnails.

I've deleted the thumbnail caches via command prompt (Admin).

I've gone through View/Options/View and made sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" was not checked.

And still, I cannot get thumbnails for my .mp4 files. All I get is that movie clicker symbol blue icon.

Anything I haven't tried yet?

My original problem was this: whenever I double-clicked on a thumbnail in Windows Explorer, the picture would open up in Paint Shop Pro but when I wanted another picture to come up in the PSP application that was already open, it would open up another PSP instead.

I thought I found a solution to this after looking online (can't remember exactly what it was now but I entered something in start, run) only now I have another problem because I can't view any thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

Can anyone help me get my thumbnails back and also solve my problem with PSP opening up lots of times for every photo I want to view? Thanks!

Okay, I've found a solution to the thumbnails not showing up - did start, run and then regsvr32 thumbvw

I'm still having several PSP's opening up when I want to view several pictures though... any ideas anyone? Please?

Anyone know the relationship between an image file and its thumbnail ? I'd assumed that the file was read and the thumbnail dynamically created when I select to view with Thumbnail or Slideshow option. The point being that I have a file which only about 5% of the image shows in the thumbnail but the image file is intact and can be fully 'previewed' or viewed. Any ideas ? N.B. it is almost 47mb in size but I have others larger than that which don't exhibit this 'problem'. More of a nusiance than anything but curious to understand. Have refreshed the image file from another source (CD) but still the same. Thumbnail of CD is ok.

Answer:Images and Thumbnails in Windows Explorer

XP?Right click on the thumbnail in question, and from the menu try the 'refresh thumbnail' option, and see if this helps. If that does not help, open the containing folder, locate the file called 'thumbs.db' and delete it. close the folder and re-open it. FX'D

Hi.
I have been fighting with this since I purchased this notebook with Windows 7 in 2010.
I do a lot of photo editing.  I may have around 40K image files on my computer.  When I am doing a lot of editing, a problem arises as the thumbnails do not update in window explorer.  So, if I am working on several images and will open and reopen files, if I have made an improvement on a file, the thumbnail will not update and it gets confusing trying to find a picture that I have just edited.
I have sought suggestions on this issue a dozen different times.  When I troll through forums, this is a  common problem.
Here's a spoiler alert ... cleaning the thumbnail cache does not fix the problem. Matter of fact, here is a classic "cookbook" recipe on how to fix this from another forum ...

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10797-thumbnail-cache-clear-reset.html

As usual, the answer is never found and the solutions move from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Since Bleeping is my favorite stop, I thought I would seek an answer here rather than letting Google find another false positive to my question.

Thanks.

Answer:Updating thumbnails in Windows Explorer

My experience is that the thumbnails reflected by Explorer view...only update when the folder/Explorer window is opened.

I suppose that using a photo album, rather than explorer, might result in the desired updated images you seek.

I tend to give any edited image a new filename, keeping track of them in that manner while also retaining my originals.

When I open Windows Explorer I and go to my Picture File, the Thumbnails don't always show correctly. I can open Windows Explore and see no Thumbnails displayed but if I open another copy, it's better but not all come up. I have multiple folders, some display no thumbnails (a blank white sheet), others show a few and others show more. I also get a green bar at the top that never finishes. Sometimes, I open Explorer, and if I try to expand the Folder Tree on the left panel it won't expand, The Files are on an External Flash Drive. I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. One last thing, the computer seems as it's freezing and not updating the thumbnails, but currently the CPU usage is only 4% under Task Manager.

Hello, I have Windows 7 Pro X64, and fully updated. All repairs have already been performed. I have also disabled the always show icons option in explorer.
Recently, I lost the ability to view MP3 art thumbnails in windows explorer. Explorer also cannot read their ID tags and shows blanks for all fields. When I view the MP3s in dedicated programs such as MP3Tag or iTunes etc., I see the art and tags just fine. I've researched this issue for days without any solution to resolve the problem.
These MP3s show up just fine in windows explorer on my other Windows 7 computer.
Thank you in advance.

is there anyway to increase the Size of Thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

Answer:is there anyway to Increase the Size of Thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

From http://www.tweakxp.com/article36841.aspx

"The thumbnail view in windows explorer gives you easy access to a portfolio of images, but the default image size may not be to your liking. To control the thumbnail dimensions, go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer. Make a new DWORD value named ThumbnailSize. Double click the value and type in a number in decimal anywhere from 32 to 256. Making it smaller will display many more images on the screen for quicker perusual. Its an immediate change by the way, so keep regedit open and mess around..."

I think the default size is 75.

Recently windows started having a problem displaying thumbnails for JPGs. If I load a folder of images it shows them all for a moment, then swiftly changes loads of them to white blanks.

A bit more investigating and I realise it's only for image files over 10MB. I'm a photographer, so looking at images litterally all day, so it's quite an annoyance! Or course I use other software for sorting, organising, resizing etc, but plenty of times you just want to load a folder and see the images.

Here's a screengrab, sorting a folder by size, anything larger than 10MB is a white blank icon:

well, i think i remember in windows xp that whenever you had pictures in any folder, and you were in that folder using windows explorer, that you were able to see a thumbnail of the actual picture IN the folder....

but in windows vista, and now in windows 7 (i upgraded a while ago), i'm not able to see the thumbnail of the actual picture itself....all i see inside the pictures folder (or any folder with pics for that matter), is a little thumbnail of a blue mountain...

i have a bunch of pictures, and i dont like having to click on every single one until i find the one i'm looking for....it VERY inconvenient and time consuming.

so, does anyone know how to fix this? make it so i can see thumbnails of the ACTUAL PICTURE, and not of a blue mountain for every single picture?

Things I've tried:

1. I have Haali Media Splitter installed (from CoreAVC) options>>explorer integration (yes)>>Thumbnails offset (10000)
2. WMP Playback Pack
3. DivX Preview

None of those worked. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. The KMPlayer is the default to play my MKV files (works great), but I can change that to Windows Media Player if needed to show the details and thumbnails. Any suggestions?

And I can't install DivX Plus Codec Pack like other people have recommend because my laptop isn't connected to the internet (no wireless). To install the other things I've just put the installer on a USB and then installed them from the USB onto my laptop.

Hullo Tech Support Guy forum members!

So I've been having this issue for a while and decided that it's finally time I went and found a solution to fixing it.

A quick search in both these forums and Google in general didn't bring up anything relevant--I may have been using wrong keywords of course--but I figured I'd post here and see if anyone can readily help me out!

Here is the issue (click to view full):

As you can see, in explorer, for some reason, if I have Thumbnails chosen as my file viewing method, the Thumbnail will cover up the file name. This is rather irritating, as might be evidenced by the second screenshot. Obviously, how am I to know which file is which if I can't see the image, nor read its name?

I've attempted fixing it already by going to: "[Personalize] > [Window Color and Appearance] > [Open classic appearance properties for more color options] > [Advanced...] > [Icon Spacing (Vertical)]" and then modifying the value to something greater, but it has no effect at all; doesn't move the icons, nor get them to stop covering each other up.

Anyway, any and all assistance would be terrific, and thank-you for taking a look at this!

PS: This overlap issue occurs in Windows Explorer, [Open], [Save], and other dialog boxes. Pretty much anywhere where there is a Thumbnail viewing mode.

Yesterday I uninstalled opera and IObit malware fighter.
The uninstaller deleted relevant registry entries.

Since then I am having problem that
1- In explorer DVD Ram Drive shows correctly as drive G, but on insertion of a DVD disc it would not change to the name of the inserted DVD. Although when I click on the icon the correct folders in that disc are displayed.
2- If I change the disc in my DVD drive, the icon/name for next/new disc does not show up in the explorer but instead the name and contents of the previous disc continue to show I have to reboot the computer to view new DVD disc contents in explorer.
3- Even then explorer after displaying new thumbnails comes up with explorer.exe error, memory referenced at ------- etc could not be read.

I have Win XP SP3 with all updates since.
My efforts=
F5 doesn't refresh and System restore didn't help.
Two scans by different antiviruses all clear.
I have cleaned the lens of DVD drive to no effect
Also uninstalled and re-installed the DVD drive from device manager; no good!!!
Registry cleaners- no effect

I have not opened the case of my PC, wires and connections are secure and in past such problem was resolved with re-installation of windows that I wish to avoid. No change of memory modules was ever needed.

I'm having a bizarre problem on my Windows 10 PC.

For some reason, lots of image thumbnails won't load (particularly PNG files and AVI files), which is extremely frustrating. Sometimes it shows the file type icon, sometimes a generic file icon, and something literally nothing at all.

In addition, if I right click on an image file, and choose "Open with...", explorer freezes and I have to restart it in Task Manager.

Also, Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations perpetually loads for me and I can't set it.

I reset my PC about a week ago, I've tried this solution, I've done check disk and repair disk, and I can't seem to find a solution.

I use thumbnails while I work constantly, so this is a huge detriment to my productivity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello All,

After uninstalling software which allows the user to view 3D files (as well as most image/movie files), I could not get thumbnails to show in Windows Explorer for PNG and MP4 file types. I figured that since I was going to upgrade to Windows 10, I would allow said upgrade to "fix" the issue for me.

After upgrading to Windows 10, I could see thumbnails of MP4 files, but not PNG.

Things I have done to get back the PNG thumbnail generation:

Nothing has helped. Still icons, no thumbnails for PNG files.

Anyone have any insight as to how I might get back PNG thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

I'm never the one to ask, but I don't know what happened. I tried looking online but I couldn't find any solutions. It seems like all my icons (including folders) are not showing up in windows explorer, taskbar, or the desktop anymore. This isn't too big a problem, but navigating through my picture library is very complicated without thumbnails.

My PC is pretty heavily customized.
I also cannot open the start menu from the taskbar anymore. I click the startorb and nothing appears.

Also, while I was uploaded the three screenshots to imgur, the icons showed up on the popup to windows explorer.

I keep hearing (MS?) people saying that if you move to win7 your only option to deal with any gripes you might have with it s way of doing things, is to just cope with them.

Well now, aint that some way to spoil your customers!

Heres what.

I ve got folders with images and I do a lot of sorting and moving around and when I used XP I could see little fancy tumbnail previews of the images inside the folder, ON the folder icon.

Windows 7 does this too but in an inept, I-need-to-be-different-for-differents-sake kinda way.

Now, why the heck would MS want to go changin stuff around that aint needin no changin around I wonder.

Then I wonder if theres somewhere I can change this around to a practical setting but soon realize theres no such setting anywhere.

Is there a hack/tool/whatever around someplace that will let me fix Windows Explorer tomake it useful to me once again?

Hi all, I once was able in my previous Windows 7 PC to set Windows Explorer to be able to show the cover image (first page) of an ebook when Windows Explorer was set to Thumbnail View.

For PDF format I applied this fix, for mobi this one, but now I need to also extend thumbnail view to djvu and epub ebook formats, and I don't recall how I managed to do it in Windows 7. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.

(since I have a backup of my previous Windows 7 PC, is there a way to export the corresponding registry keys and import them in my current Windows 8.1 PC?)

I found no solution in Windows Explorer's View menu, Options, and Help.

I would suspect it was due to me shutting down some 'process' or 'service' (2 weeks ago), but as far as I can see, all possibly-relevant processes and services are now running.

A related issue was raised by someone else and responded to by me here: Can't Rate Media in Explorer (Vista Home).

A few days ago I was able to rate my mp3's and videos in Windows Explorer (0 to 5 star ratings), at the bottom of the window pane. You give it a rating, hit the save button, and there you go! But now I can't anymore.

I have tons of folders with tons of photos and I would like to change the view so that all photos are displayed as large thumbnails, but I don't want to have to keep clicking that option in the view pane everytime I go into a folder, since I edit and delete MANY photos in many folders it would be nice if all photos displayed as large thumbnalis in ALL of my folders. I looked online and everyone said to go to Folder Option>View and select the option in there but there is no option to display folders/photos as large thumbnails.

Answer:How to changes windows explorer default folder view to large thumbnails?

Try right clicking on some blank space where the photos are listed

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

I am no longer able to set .jpg files as the background image I only get a black desktop bacground if I do so (.bmp works alright), further the pictures folder & all other folders which used to show a thumbnail preview no longer do so I just see the file name preceded by a blank placeholder.

I have a problem similar to this thread
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/695391-vista-wont-display-picture-thumbnails.html

But this thread seems to have been closed without a proper solution.

Apart from this I also have a problem with online videos, i do not hear anything ! there is no audio being played with youtube, ..... . Actually windows media player & vlc player work fine but the startup sounds/ alerts no longer seem to be heard, even when the volume is increased i do not hear a thing (the usual beep sound is gone)

What should have gone wrong ?

Thanks for the help,

Cannot keep "thumbnails" as default viewing option throughout Windows Explorer programs & functions

Running XP Home, Version 2002, SP2

All my folders are set to thumbnail in windows explorer, but when I go to send a picture on msn or open in another application the pictures are in list view.

This requires an extra step to view the thumbnail, having to go to "view menu" then check thumbnails to preview files before opening/sending.

I have scoured the internet for a solution, to no avail.

Anyone be so kind as to lend any expertise on the issue?

Thank you.

No matter how many times I reset file explorer in Windows 10, browsing through folder will open multiple windows and not keep the same windows at all. WTF? Is it this hard to get a basic god damn app to behave normally? Browsing through my D$ drive will spawn multiple windows. Or browsing through C$ will open the same window for the first folder then pop open a new window for anything else.

Anyone else having this issue? Any fix? Restoring defaults does nothing. I just want to keep the same window open for everything. I don't want to have multiple instances of file explorer windows while browsing. There used to be a target shortcut you could place in the shortcut of file explorer that would help out with this. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

This is why when you install Acdsee, you do a custom install and DON'T associate Jpeg files with it.

But anyway, open Regedit, and navigate to "HKCR\.jpe\PersistentHandler"

Is the default value "{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"? Check the same for .JPG and .JPEG

Make a backup of whatever values are there, and change them too the value I gave above. Reboot, and see if your thumbnail views are back. If not, then restore the default values for PersistenHandler to whatever value they where, and then uninstall ACDsee to see if that will restore them.

If uninstalling ACDSee worked, then install it again but DON'T associate JPG files with it. I have ACDSe Pro 2 installed, and thumbnails show just fine here.

I use WIN XP Pro and all my folders in Win Explorer opens up in the details view and that's OK. What I would like is to have just My Pictures folders and sub folders open in a thumbnail view.
My question is is there a way to select just the folders and sub folders in My Pictures to open in thumbnails without doing each sub folder one at a time?
Thanks.
Floyd

Answer:Thumbnails in Win Explorer

Not sure how to lock the view into place, but I know you can set all your folders the same, and apply a folder template on the My Pictures folder so that it and all its subfolders will use thumbnails. Here's how:

Set All Folders To The Same View Options:
1. Go to any folder on your system, and configure it to your liking.
2. Select 'Folder Options' from the 'Tools' menu
3. On the 'Folder Options' dialog, select the 'View' tab.
4. Under 'Folder Views' press the 'Apply To All Folders' button
5. Apply your settings.

Now every folder view options should be identical to this current folders settings.

Set A Folder Template:
1. Right-click the 'My Pictures' folder
2. Select 'Properties'
3. On the folder properties dialog, select the 'Customize' tab
4. Under 'What Kind Of Folder Do You Want?' select 'Photo Album' or 'Pictures'
5. Apply your settings

Now you should have thumbnails view on all these folders.

I do believe there is a way to lock the settings with a registry hack, but I'm unfamiliar with it.

For sometime now, I have been unable to get thumbnails to work for most video formats. .avi is the only one that shows thumbs. .mov, .mpg, .mpeg, .mpeg4, etc, show only icons. .mov shows QT icon, and the rest show WMP icon. I USED to have thumbs, but not for while.

Hi,
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).

I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.

I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks for your help

Answer:View Thumbnails in Explorer

I am going to say that because the pics actually reside on OSX, windows is unable to create a thumnail cache. It does this to speed up the viewing time, however your windows really doesn't "own" the pics folder on OSX and may not be able to build this cache properly and therefore you would not have any thumnails. here is an excert from the mighty Wikipedia about it:

"Beginning with Windows Vista, thumbnail previews are stored in a centralized location on the system. This provides the system with access to images independent of their location, and addresses issues with the locality of Thumbs.db files. The cache is stored at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db (numbered by size); as well as an index used to find thumbnails in each sized database.
However, when browsing network shares with write permission, Windows Vista and Windows 7 store a Thumbs.db file in the remote directory instead of using the (local) central thumbnail cache. This can cause issues when deleting remote shares, as the directory will become locked for a period of time when selected as Windows Explorer automatically creates a remote Thumbs.db file.
Creating Thumbs.db files on remote shares can be disabled with a Group Policy setting"

Hope that makes some sense, it would seem that is the problem to me any way.

I have read similar problems on this forum, but, unfortunately, did not solve mine.

After installing a software (I'm not sure which, it could be VLC or ffdshow codecs or videopad), video thumbnails in Windows Explorer would not show a frame from the video, just the icons. I then downloaded a .reg file which restored the video thumbnails, but now it only shows the first frame of the video, which is usually blank. So now all my videos show a blank black picture, which was not so earlier. Before the problem started, it would pick up a random frame from the video...

I use Windows 10, but ever since upgrade from XP to windows 7, PSD thumbnails are not showing in windows explorer, as jpg and gif does.
Tried this solution but nothing changed:
How to enable Thumbnail view for Photoshop PSD files in Windows 7
any solution?

Answer:.PSD thumbnails not showing in explorer?

Thumbnails for formats that Windows does not natively support are supplied by a handler, either this handler is not installed on your system or its associations have been damaged. I believe the handler also needs to be 64-bit if your system is 64-bit, as with other explorer shell extensions.

If you're using Photoshop, check you have the 64-bit version installed if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you have upgraded Windows, the associations may have been damaged and so you may need to re-install Photoshop. Another solution is to install an alternative thumbnail hander, Media Preview may possibly support PSD files now I remember it being mentioned as an upcoming feature a while ago.

Maria_thea, I'm not familiar with NITRO so this's just a SWAG. My guess is that when installed, it changed a setting (View, Associations, etc.)? Either reinstall it and see if it has an uninstaller you can run that knows where all the bodies are buried and can put things back (sorta doubt it) or look at the settings and change them back manually (most likely IMHO). After upgrading to Windows 10 Pro, all my image thumbnails in Explorer show perfectly fine with the exception of PNG type.
It's strange, if I open a PNG with the Phgoto app then refresh the explorer window, the thumbnail will appear for the image I open, but none other. So If I open them one at a time and refresh Explorer, the thumbs will show.
I have tried all the common 'fixes' I've seen here and from results of google searches - but none have solved my particular unusual problem.
There's one other problem which I feel might be related.
Windows App icons don't show on the task bar or the Default programs dialog. The DO show in the start menu.
What happens, is they show as a blank square on the taskbar and as a white document in default program dialog.

Can someone provide me with a step by step in modifying the registry to show flv thumbnails just as I am able to see mpeg and avi and wmv files.

I have some instructions but I didn't quite understand it all on how/what to modify. I will include such info as I have ...need some experienced help for a newbie ! Thank you.

But here is how you can make your videos in extensions like flv and 3gp to show thumbnail preview in the Windows Explorer just like the avi and wmv files.

1. The following trick needs registry tweaking so you can either backup your registry or delete the key that you are just going to create.

2. Open a notepad and copy and paste the following code as it is.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@=?{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}?

3. Remember you need to copy the entire code and then save the file with any name but with .reg extension say abc.reg (If this don?t work then paste Windows
Registry Editor Version 5.00 before REGEDIT4 and try again)

4. Double click this newly created file and click on yes afterwards.

5. Congratulations, flv video files will show a thumbnail preview in the explorer.

Note:

Similarly, you can make the other video files like .3gp, .mp4, .mov or .vob to show thumbnail preview in the explorer. For that you just need to replace .flv with the extension you are making

Example:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-... Read more

Answer:Viewing flv thumbnails in explorer WinXp

I remember my first time doing something like this. I asked the same question you have since I was afraid I'd brake my computer.

Click start, click run, type notepad and click ok.

Copy and paste the following text into the new window, just like you would with Word or any other text editing program:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@=”{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}”

Make sure there are no extra spaces before REGEDIT4 or after 590}"

Save the file to your Desktop as (something).reg and double click the new file that's been created. Windows should ask you if you'd like to import it into your registry. Click yes and reboot to finish.

Sometimes, the file will open in Notepad instead of being imported. This rarely happens but it's not hard to fix. Just post here again if it does and I'll walk you through fixing it.

Hi guys

Again this is a pain...I changed to Vista Ultimate 64bits a week ago, and again the damn thumbnail problem on windows explorer...

I managed to solve this on 32bits Vista and i have a post here but the same solutions doesnt' work on 64bits

What i did to solve on 32bits Vista is

1) install fresh vista
2) open the avi file with crystal player
3) crystal player told me "do you want to load the codec for this files?"
4) so that was all, he downloaded some avi basic pack and everything worked fine

Same thing i tried on vista 64 but no luck

1) i tried that solution
2) i tried the registry fixes
3) i installed klite codeck pack
4) i installed combined comunity codeck pack
5) i installed vista codec package

Well no luck...Also if i open ANY avi file i whatever player i choose i can see it perfect, but no thumbnails...BUT the only player that does not work is Windows Media Center says..."no codec to display the movie" and "cannot show thumbnail"

Well hope someone can figured out this and can help me

Cheers to all

Suddenly a few days ago, explorer stopped loading all thumbnails in any image folder with more than a dozen or so pictures. It's not even slowly trying to cache them, it just stops.
It will generally load the first dozen, and if I scroll to the bottom of the folder, the last dozen or so are loaded with everything in between just image icons.

If I refresh, maybe 1 or 2 extra thumbs load. But strangely, if I delete 1 picture, often many thumbs will load.

I searched google and this site, but none of the thumbnail issues seemed to be close to mine.

EDIT: Looks like after rebooting into safe mode and cleaning the thumb cache seems to have fixed the issue. Thank's broe23 for the help

You might double check through each option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It's for Windows 7, but it's the same in Windows 8 except "Windows Explorer" is "File Explorer" in OPITION FOUR instead.

Hope this helps,

I have a strange issue that is hindering my work since I am a web developer that works from home and this is occurring on my production machine. The issue just started tonight after I downloaded some pictures from an email a client sent to me. Every time a picture is placed on the desktop explorer crashes in 5-10 second intervals. It doesn't matter what image it is. The same thing occurs inside of safe mode. I had to open up task manager launch command prompt and delete the picture I placed on my desktop in the command line in order to make the computer usable again. It now also crashes when I try to back up my files , of course I probably could do this via command line, but I was hoping for a easy fix.

Here is the log from the event viewer. It seems to be the same for every crash

Just upgraded to a PC with Windows 7. When I run Windows explorer, I can no longer see my images and movies as thumbnails, when in icon view. They stay as icons. This happens whatever program I associate with the images/movies. I never had a problem in XP or Vista. I have looked through Windows help, but can't find any info on this. Can anyone advise how to get thumbnails displayed, so I can browse my images properly?

Answer:Win explorer does not display images as thumbnails

This started suddenly after I turned my desktop pc off before going away for a week. When I came home and turned it back on, it hasn't been "normal" since.

When I start my computer, go to my user folder, documents etc., all appears fine. Folders/thumbnails and images within the folder appear as normal.

However, if I open (for instance) my "downloads" folder, the folder icons and associated icons are initially displayed as "normal", but I see that the explorer bar (where I see C:/user/downloads, etc) is "computing items" but it never stops. A green "progress bar" SLOWLY moves across that "text window" and then it stays green. As if the pc is having trouble reading what is in the folder.

Once that happens, if I back out of the folder and then go back in to it, most of the folder icons/thumbnails/pictures are no longer visible. If I navigate to other folders, it's the same thing; many (but not all) of the folder icons and the thumbnails within are not displayed. Example: in my "user file" the AppData and Tracing folders, the icon is non existant....yet my Contacts, Desktop, Favorites, Documents etc. are shown as standard windows "yellow folders" but not the thumbnails that I have associated with them. Also, the file info (if I highlight a file name) does not appear at the bottom of the explorer window, as it normally would for me.

I have run my anti-virus, malwarebytes, which are showing no probl... Read more

Also on the desktop. files < 10mb generates perfect images. It doesn't matter what format it is, tiff, jpg.

Hey there...ok...when I'm in explorer (viewing files not the internet) my View setting sometimes changes from Details to Thumbnails for no reason at all...not it just affects that one folder...so I set it back to Details and it's all good again...the folder seems random...it's been happening to me for a long time...I don't think it's a virus or anything bad...I think it's a flaw or a bug or something...does anyone else have this problem??? Answer:How come my View changes from Details to Thumbnails in Explorer for no reason???

I had the EXACT same problem. I've attached the text below on how to fix it.

Good luck
By default, Windows XP will remember the view settings for the 400 most recently used folders. After that, XP will begin overwriting the data of the oldest folder, and its view setting will be lost. The information is stored in the registry by two keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

These keys can be modified to make XP remember more folder settings.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools--Folder Options--View--Advanced Settings. Ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

Open Regedit and go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell.

Right-click on "Shell", then follow to New--Key--DWORD Value.

Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space between BagMRU and Size).

Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

Now go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam.

Create another BagMRU Size DWORD Value for "ShellNoRoam". Again, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

You will have two "BagMRU Size" values equal to 0x000007d0 (2000).

Close the registry and reboot.

Windows XP will now remember 2000 folder view settings instead of 400

Always remember to back up your registry.

Vista Home Premium SP2. When browsing folders of digital photos, Explorer will load up all of the thumbnails, and as soon as it has the last one loaded, 95% of the photos will revert to the default icon and I'll end up with thumbnail views of only 2 or 3 images out of 75 or 80. If I change the thumbnail size, it'll "rescan" the folder, load all thumbs, and then revert 95% random ones back to the default icon. This makes it nearly impossible to organize my photos and is VERY annoying and problematic!

Answer:Explorer only displays random thumbnails of images

hello
have you tried going to control panel (classic view) > folder options > View tab make sure. always show icons, never thumbnails. dont have a check in it. click apply.
best of luck

Let me correct that subject line a bit. It happens in almost all Sub Folders. For example, This PC is an odd one. Sometimes it's in thumbnail view, other times it's in detail view. I suppose that depends on how you start This PC.
This started about 3 weeks ago. I've been so busy with tech problems, at the time I never thought about it being a long term issue. Had I known, I could have looked at my windows updates to see if there was an update around that time. But if it was a Windows update, I think lots of users would be throwing fits, so it must be something that was caused by a setting in another program.
I use the detail view on ALL of my folders. Even pictures and music, if I'm looking at those in Explorer, I want the detail view. I have programs for my audio files and my image files - then I will use a different view.
Well, I remember in the good old days, at least in XP, you could go into Folder Options and make changes and there was a bo you could check to Apply these changes to ALL folders? It was wonderful. Windows 10 doesn't have that option. But I figure one of you has had a similar issue, and I also figure one of you has found a solution.
I change the settings in every folder that I open, but it doesn't stay, and I've looked at all the options in the toolbar - There doesn't seem to be any option to save that view, let alone apply to ALL folders. This is driving me mad.
So, have any of you had this problem? Have any of you found a way to change settings for fol... Read more

Thank you in advance for reading and offering potential help. I actually located the exact same problem another poster posted in these forums (see below URL). However, his problem "just fixed itself" before he really began to do much troubleshooting.

Answer:Explorer Window folder thumbnails disappearing

As long as your 'normal widows settings are OK, I have seen this where:
* a stripped (N) version of windows has been installed without WMP
* WMP has been uninstalled
* A display utility or player has been installed or uninstalled and its not restored prior settings.

Its possibly (in these cases) a registry corruption/missing entries.

Rather than faff with the registry,, simply get the freeware babelsoft 'media preview' program, install it, run it and reset it simply by setting the tick boxes for the file types.

Previously vista explorer used to show a thumbnail of a still image from my video files (avi; divx; etc).

I installed Nero and I think the install went a bit wrong. As I kept getting DCOM errors whenever I viewed a folder in thumbnail view that contained videos. Reinstalling nero solved this problem. However it resulted in explorer now only showing the generic AVI thumbnails.

I have resinstalled FFshow and this has not helped. Has anyone else come across this problem, or something similar whereby thumbnail view shows default generic items instead of the actual image? And more importantly, has anyone else resolved it.

Thanks.

Answer:Missing Video (avi; divx; etc) thumbnails in explorer

Just as I thought. Turns out it was something to do with the registry and explorer losing associations.

Thankfully, someone had already solved the problem with a registry file. I can confirm that I have downloaded this file and tested and it has solved my problem.

Provided is the link to his page
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/FIXMissingThumbnailsForVideosWMVAVIMPGInWindowsExplorer.aspx

Further to this page is another link that provides various registry files that fix various other file association problems.

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/

This was easy to solve in XP but changing default actions and program/file associations in Vista is completely broken in my opinion.

Ok I know many people have this problem and disabling thumbnails does fix it. However I don't want to disable thumbnails. At least not for images.

I have searched for this problem for a long time and noone has a solution. The problem may be either adobe programs making thumbnails (unlikely for me) or more likely, video codec problems.

So how do I stop Windows crashing whenever I open a folder with certain video files in it?

If this cannot be fixed, is there anyway I can enable thumbnail previews for images but not videos?

Ok this problem may not be important or serious but I'm finding it annoying... and ugly.

2 thumbnails for 2 different programs have disappeared from explorer. The thumbnails for these programs are gone no matter where I look... including the program file folder, although they ARE showing up in add/remove programs. They are gone from the desktop, start menu, etc. The icon they're currently using is the generic "no program associated" icon. However, when I click the icon, the programs are still working as they should.

I tried clearing all thumbnails, cleaning up the drive, refreshing, etc. That does not work.

Then I tried logging into the other Admin account, and oddly, the icons ARE there. I even went into the program file folder, and they're there too on this account. So I tried something that I thought would solve it for sure.... I copied the .exe's from that account to the C:/ directory. Sure enough, when I went back into the account where the thumbnails are not loading, the icons were showing up as they should... But ONLY where I have planted them on the root C:/ directory. When I tried deleting the ones in the program folders and replacing them with the correct versions, as soon as I plop them in there, they turn back to the generic image.

Very strange I think. I've also tried multiple restarts.

The programs I've installed since this started were 7zip, VLC Media Player, Open Office, and uTorrent. The programs the thumbnail... Read more

Hallo guys

I have a Toshiba Qosmio Q55-q802 and from the first day that I have it, I have problems with the thumbnails in windows explorer. The only thing that shows is the icon of the player (in my case kmplayer) and not a capture moment from the film or episode (the small picture) p.s I wish that you guys can understand what I am trying to explain here because my English it's not so good.

So, I tried many things as changing the player, download vista codecs, and some other things that I read in others forums but until now I didn?t manage to fix it.

If someone knows something please kindly reply!!

I used to be able, in web page view, see a thumbnailof an image file, (bmp and tif anyway), in the left handpanel just under the file info section. Now, for some reason, that feature has gone away.I can still pick thumbnail view and see thumbnails forthe icons for bmps, but what I had was the ability to have the file namesin a list, but when I clicked on one, it's image would popup in that left hand pane.I can't remember how I got it to work that way; does anyoneknow how to get that feature back? Thanks so much.

Hey Guys, this is an odd one.

I have a new Win10 machine which completely refuses to display thumbnails for PDF file types.

I have checked the view settings in explorer, and also the visual effects settings and it looks correct.

I have tried using Adobe Reader DC (which required a preferences setting to be changed to generate thumbnails) and also Foxit Reader (which doesn't) with no luck. Currently I have Foxit Reader installed.

PDF`s are currently visible in a preview pane, but PDF thumbnails simply wont show up! JPG thumbnails, however, generate just fine.

I did have this issue a while ago on an old machine, but the issue "went away" - I didn't take any deliberate actions to fix, so I`m at a loss to know whats going on here.

Any replies greatly appreciated.

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Thanks,
Lisa

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.
