Can you rewrite a deleted system volume?

Question: Can you rewrite a deleted system volume?

Is there a method to rewrite a deleted Windows 7 system volume (the small 200 MB or 100 MB partition)? I'd like to avoid doing a complete reinstall, but I have a feeling that I'm screwed.

Preferred Solution: Can you rewrite a deleted system volume?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys:

I'm an idiot!!! Last night I deleted my System Volume Information folder off of a Raid-0 set of hard drives. As I mentioned, this raid set is not drive with my XP on it. This is just a drive for storage of pictures, video, and other programs I prefer not to have on my C:\. I did take go as far as to turn off System Restore before deleting it. Now when I boot up I cannot access the drive at all. It tells me that "The drive is not formatted. Do I want to format it now?."

I don't want to do that and I am wondering if there is a way to create a new System Volume Information folder so I can access the drive again???

Answer:Deleted System Volume Information Folder on a Non-Operating system drive???

I think you are connecting the dots...where there is no connection.

Deleting a system volume folder...isn't possible by me, even when system restore is not used (I always disable SR immediately after a clean install). Even though the folders are empty and I don't have SR employed, the system won't allow me to delete these empty folders.

I believe that the problem is your RAID setup...perhaps you ought to try to repair it.

I used baku 2 weeks ago and deleted my sytem volume information. Win xp and now no restore,no help,no run etc. Still online and still lost ????

Answer:I deleted system volume information

I'm not understanding your problem very well as your post is somewhat brief and hard to comprehend.

1. I'm assuming by "baku" you mean backup? Please confirm.

2. When you say you deleted your system volume information do you mean the actual folder itself, or the contents of the folder?

3. When you say "no restore" do you mean you can not now set a restore point?

Any further details you can give as to what you did and what you are trying to do would be helpful.

I was installing Office 2003 on WinXP. the installation halted with an error saying that the win.ini file could not be modified.
I've tried to edit both the win.ini and system.ini files (through sysedit and wordpad), but for both I get a "file in use" error and cannot overwrite them.
The files are not "read only".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:need diagnostic disk to rewrite eeprom after replacing system board

The disc is only available to authorised service agents, you'll need to contact support or an agent near you and ask if they could update the information for you.
The disc is Lenovo's intellectual property, and do not want it distributed to anyone other than those authorised to use it, providing it directly or indirectly to a third party would be illegal - Thread locked.

Here is a question I can't seem to find the answer to in the archives.

How can adjust the volume output from my Windows ME machine (with SoundMax Digital Audio) so that the volume of the background music I like to listen to (via RealOne Player version is quiet, but the other important sounds my PC makes (like email or calendar notifications) are loud enough so I can hear them?

I've seemingly tried all combinations of settings for the volume sliders/adjustments, including:

1) The volume knob on my speakers
2) The RealOne Player volume slider
3) The Windows volume control panel "Volume Control" slider
4) The WIndows volume control panel "PC Beep" slider

Even when the "PC Beep" volume slide is set to maximum, and the "Volume Control" slider is set near minimum in the Windows volume control panel, the PC beep is virtually inaudible when the background music is acceptably quiet (by adjusting the RealOne volume slider and/or the volume control on my speakers).

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some other way that I'm not thinking of to boost the volume of the system sounds my PC makes, while keeping the RealOne music volume low?

Answer:Boosting system beep volume relative to other sound volume?

Question: deleted volume

Hi. I was using diskpart to delete a volume from my usb external hd and i wiped the drive by mistake. Can I retrieve the files and folders or are they lost forever? Any assistance will be appreciated. deanie44

Answer:deleted volume

Hi, it depends what 'wiped' means here. Can you post the command you used?

Meanwhile try one or more of the popular data recovery programs e.g. Recuva.

You might be lucky. Such programs usually have two levels of scanning.

I accidentally deleted my portable hard drive volume when messing around with Disk Management on Windows 7. The hard drive is formatted using FAT32 and is about 120GB. Is there any way to recover it? I have all media and some important documents in there. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer:Help recover deleted volume

You can use the undelete option in a 3rd party partition manager. As long as you haven't attempted to change that partition in any way other than delete it, should work fine.

If you have a partition Manager - see if it has that option. Post back and let me know.

I have a tower Raid system with 8 2t drives. One of the drives was bad so in Disk manager, I deleted the volume. Now, I'd like to re-add a new drive to replace that one, but Disk manger will not recognize that drive even though I can see it in device manager and I've changed the drive positions in the Raid box. Is there a way to force Disk manger to see a drive again? (same one or different drive?)

Hi guys, first time poster here so hopefully this will be at least somewhat bearable.

OK, so here is what I wanted to do, I was looking around the net and stumbled on to some videos about software RAID with USB drives. I know it isn't a very elegant or practical solution but I thought it would just be cool to see it working. So I found this article How to Create a Software RAID Array in Windows 7 and figured that since disk management in both 7/8 are essentially the same it wouldn't be a problem. I then went to delete the volumes on the flash drives and saw the option was grayed out. So in that state the drives cannot be used for what I wanted them to be used for. I did notice that on his tutorial his drives were described as "Basic" and my drives are described as "Removable" I think that somewhere along the line I saw something about removable drives being hard to work with in disk management so that may be it.
So if anyone knows how to do this all help is greatly appreciated!

Hello there, I am in need of some help. I recently cleaned out some unneeded applications on my control panel, and restarted my computer, but now I've lost my volume control/ dimmer control. There use to be a little black box that would pop up whenever i increased or decreased my volume or dimmer, but now its gone. I would like to have that back. Answer:Need help, deleted application, and now no volume or dimmer control.

There's proprietary software that provides this functionality. You may need to scour Lenovo's website for downloads of this nature, or contact them directly to see if they can provide you with a download. Or if the laptop came with backups of this kind where you can install the various software from CDs, then start looking.

Hi, I accidentally deleted the volume on my 3rd hard drive and now my Windows Vista PC won't even recognize the drive. How can I fix this?

The problem started when I put my old Barracuda 160 gig drive in a usb external case and couldn't get it to work until I put the jumpers on 7-8. The problem was, it was asking me to format the drive which was full of files which I wanted to retrieve. Through a series of now obvious mistakes, I first shrunk the volume backwards, I meant to shrink only 50 MB but deleted all but 50 MB and then stupidly deleted the entire volume.

What I need now is to at least be able to have my PC recognize the drive again and to be able to restore the full volume but would ideally like to still be able to retrieve the data, if that's even possible at this point. Also, why does, or did my computer only recognize this drive in the 7-8 jumper configuration? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Today I was in Disk Management and accidentally removed Volume K: which was my external Seagate Hard Drive. I meant to re format and delete the files but not delete the acutal volume.

I now cannot see my drive K: when I go into My Computer, but it is their in device manager, when I plug it in an out, i get the noise, but I just cant access it, so I did a system restore to a few days ago, but no look its still gone, i actually am not worried about the files on it, I just wanted to be able to use it again.

I am using Vista Home.

Answer:Accidentally deleted volume under disk management

You should be able to go back into Disk Management to re-initialize and reformat the drive. With the Disk Management window open, look down at the list where the individual drives are listed in bold print (it should list Disk 0, Disk 1, the CD drives, etc). The drive in question should be listed; right click on the bold print for the drive and choose initialize. Once that is done, you should be able to partition and format as usual.

I had all my files saved on the secondary Western Digital 160GB Sata HDD, it was listed first at the time... But I accidentally deleted the volume on it.. Is there a way to get those files back? I had photos, movies, music, some other important files. The whole reason for having them on that secondary drive was to save them (kicking myself), until I installed Windows 7 on the new 500GB Sata HDD... I got a copy of Paragon Partition Manager 11 Personal ... and going through the Undelete Partition wizard now... Any help? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

PS. I just did the "delete" option in the Windows 7 installation section for "advanced options", the HDDs were there.. but I accidentally hit delete on the 160GB instead... That's all I did with the drive though.

Answer:Went through to Windows 7 installation, deleted wrong HDD volume..

To try and answer your question; yes and no. You can take the drive and try to have it professionally recovered. There are some companies out there that specifically recover data from these types of situations. This can be very expensive and no guarantee. I know this not what you wanted to here.

I have 3 hdd in my system and have made notations as to the location of each drive and how the OS see's each of 0 is hard drive 1, 1 is hard drive 2 and 2 is hard drive 3, which is the way I have mine installed in the hdd cage...I know that hdd 0 is the 1TB drive and hdd 1 and 2 are 320 GB for backups and data storage. Keeping in mind each drive letter that the OS assigns to each of them. So when a re-install of the OS comes along I know what hdd is what and where.

I have many volumes and on each of them there is a recycle bin. Can deleted file be in recyle bin on another disk, volume? For example if reserve space for Recycle Bin on this volume is over. Or each Recycle bin is only for it's volume?

Answer:Can deleted file be in recyle bin on another disk, volume?

Hello userwin,

Each volume has it's own hidden protected OS $Recycle.bin file that stores deleted items from only that volume. One volume cannot have it's $Recycle.bin file on a different volume. It must be on itself.

When you open the Recycle Bin, it lets you see all the deleted items from the $Recycle.bin files from each volume there much like a library does with included folders.

If you like, you can change the storage size of the recycle bin for each volume to fit your needs if free space is available to do so.

Recycle Bin storage size

Hope this helps,

I experienced a serious problem over the weekend that is forcing me to restore my system using the Win7 (64 bit Home Premium) "System Image Recovery" tool. I'll cut to the chase because I cannot, unfortunately, access any of my system restore points nor is startup repair working.

My computer has 4 different hard drives. On the c: drive, I only keep the Win7 OS and my various programs. All my other files and data are stored in the other 3 HD's (my data only hard drives).

On one of these HD's I have a System Image from about 2 months ago. I would like to restore this image using the Win7 "System Image Recovery" tool. However, there are various other files and data on this HD in addition to the System Image I would like to restore.

If I use the Win7 "System Image Recovery" tool, will it only restore my c: drive (which is what I want) or will it restore all HD's to their original state from 2 months ago?

I plan on unplugging all of the HD's during the restore process except the c: drive and the backup drive containing the image. However, I do not want to lose any newer files on the backup drive containing the System Image.

Will I be able to restore my c: drive using "System Image Recovery" without losing any new files/data on my backup drive containing the recovery image?

Answer:System Image Recovery - Does it recover just the system volume or all volumes in the system?

It will only restore the drive that the image was taken from.

Ok I am going to create a new thread on this, as I had been posting on one dated from 2012 that was an identical issue, but I think starting a new thread would be better.

I have a 1TB Western Digital HDD.

It is not my OS.

It is my data storage drive, with over 850GB of data and applications installed on it; while my OS resides by itself on my SSD.

I also have a small 1GB usb drive.

I was attempting to set up the USB drive as a bootable and was about to wipe it clean.

I was in Disk Management in Windows 7.

The WD showed up as 932GB.
The USB showed up as 934GB

I got the two mixed up, and I accidently deleted the Volume on the WD.

I did nothing else at that point, other then have a complete and total panic attack, nearly lost my dinner into a toilet... then started Googling for a solution or fix.

Google brought me here, to this thread - Undelete Hard disk Volume and recover data!

The poster appears to have done the exact same thing I did, and even posted that they found their own solution.

as soon as i remove the c: drive (mobile rack), and power up, ntldr cannot be found (presumably because windows is looking for a drive that is not there)
i have moved the system files to the sata raid0 and adjusted boot.ini, but this does not help.

Hi I had 2 external hard drives connected and in disk manager I clicked delete on the wrong one? So now the drive wont show up, so I simply created a Simple volume and know it is a RAW drive? How do I recover the files there was over 100GB and some of them are really important such as records and work related stuff, it is currently a RAW partition and all the hard disk recovery softwares dont recognise it because it is a RAW drive? do i have to format it to recover the files? Please Help!?!

Answer:*Important* Accidently deleted volume in Disk Manager, how to recover?

Do not format the disk.
this would make your task more difficult or even impossible.

There are free partition recovery tools available on the net.

Question the deletion, was it your operating system or are you still able to boot into Windows. I have never been in this position but someone will post some software for you. Just don't muddle the disk any further.

If you are able to boot into Windows this link will give you an idea of what you are looking for. Hang on because I know some forum members have done this will be suggesting more software.

Hey, everyone!

Looking for some advice on getting my GB back, if possible.
I hope I'm posting in the right area.

The other day I had to do a System Restore on my Compaq (Windows XP) so far everything is working fine now. Though, I noticed my computer was running slower than usual. I checked my overall GB usage and found that it had dropped 20GB since the System Restore. My computer is currently 140GB in total and right now only 50% of it is left, making my computer run...not so quickly.

I used TreeSize and found that the missing 20GB was being used in "System Volume Information". I don't mean to sound like a newbie, but what exactly could be suddenly taking up 20GB of my space since the system restore? Is it possible for me to get it back without harming my computer? How do I go about doing that?

Someone mentioned that I should make sure it wasn't trojan/virus related, so I've run anti-virus, anti-malware, PC tuneups, etc. Everything is clean. Any advice?

Thanks so much!

EDIT: Okay well, after searching deeper into the "System Volume Information" I see that all the used GB is coming from a folder inside called "_restore{" and there must be 70+ different files inside, I'm guessing these are system restore points? Most of them are less than 1GB (though there are so many it apparently adds up) but one of them is a whopping 13.3GB by itself. What can I do about all these?

I am using Windows XP Pro and recently created a restore point in my System Restore program. This was over a month ago, and I no longer need that restore point. When I defrag with either Diskeeper or Norton Speedisk, I get a report on a good number of defragmented/defragmentable files, most of which are in the Restore folder in my System Volume Information folder. I was able to access my System Volume folder and found the offending file but hesitate to delete that file unless I can be assured that I can do so safely.

Would a simple delete be okay?

My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

any ideas would be helpful.

1)i open the system recovery and i create one also i go to settings and  i put maximum use 3%(7gb)
but every time i reboot or next day i cant find my system recovery, its deleted.......
2)i cant create a dvd for repair system,i click on create disk repair and next, and says that there are some missing files........

Answer:system recovery deleted every time + cant create system repair disk

1.  You're actually talking about two separate things here.  Item #1 is "restore points", not system recovery.  This restores your system back to point "X" in time.
2.  The second item is "system recovery", with recovers the system to factory specs.
The system recovery, which is usually a partition on your computer.  If this partition is damaged, removed, or files are corrupted, you have only two basic choices:
1.  Order recovery DVDs from the manufacturer; or
2.  Purchase a boxed copy of the OS, and download the drivers from the manufacturer's website.
Have a great day!

I am running windows XP Pro and work with multi media applications, during playback of these files or sometimes in windows media player (and at times for know reason at all) my system will just shut down - no warning at all. The applications are not particulary using up much memory in which case I have more than enough to support. Upon starting up again this is the error message that is showing up in the event viewer (Application)

3 inconsistencies were detected in property store during recovery of c:\system volume information\catalog.wci .

In the ErrrorContent index on c:\system volume information\catalog.wci is corrupt. Please shutdown and restart the Indexing Service (cisvc). It also states after that -

Ci Cleaning up corrupt content index metadata on C:\system volume information\catalog.wci. Index will be automatically restored by refiltering all documents. This sounds like it should help to clear the problem however, tis not the case.

This has been happening off and on for a while now could someone please help me as I would dearly like to get back to business without being shut down half way through and without losing work!
I have gone through the virus, spybot, adware sequence to ensure that it is not related, and seem to be fine from that point of view at least.
Thank you in advance

Answer:System shutting down - system volume catalog error

I am having the exact same issue and am running XP Server. It has been shutting down every night on it own and has several errors that I think may be the culprit. I get the exact indexing error as you do and also: The Security System could not establish a secured connection withthe server NDS/ No authentication protocol was available. We have had this system running since January, but this just becoming an issue.

We have Symantec Antivirus that the Server pushes out to other PC's but not a firewall, except for our Router.

Any ideas.

I bought my computer used and have never been able to make a System Image disc for back-up purposes and I've had some other problems with "Backup and Restore" as well. I always get this error: "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x80080005)." By doing research I discovered that this happens because the SYSTEM does not own the "System Volume Information" file, the user does instead (me).
When I got the computer I took ownership of the entire C drive because I kept having permission problems. Now I know better and would not do that again, but I guess the only problem it caused was with "Backup and Restore" - two years on and I haven't had any other problems.
Anyways, I've tried changing ownership of System Volume Information, but it won't let me. I've found several ways to take ownership, but how can I get Windows to let me give ownership back to the SYSTEM? Or is there a way to return the file to its default state, or maybe copy a new version and delete the old one? Thanks for your help.

Here is the post where I found the solution to my backup problem:
Starting Windows 7 Backup : Server execution failed(0x80080005) ????

I apologize if I'm not supposed to post links - I'm new here

Question: rewrite a DVD

How do you rewrite a movie to a dvd? I have tried a +dvd, -dvd and a dvdrw and all say the disk is full when I go to add to it.These are avi files, do I need to change them to another format?

Answer:rewrite a DVD

what burning software do you have? got your dvd burner a daul layer up to 8.5gb or just a standard dvd-+r/rw 4.7gb. how big are the files(MOVIES) your trying to burn i.e is the total amount of avi files larger than the disc compasity. you can get a trail version of nero6 that will convert the avi file to dvd then burn it to the disc with if you have already used the disc it probaly has been finalized when you burnt to it unless your burning software has the multisession funtion in it.

Question: rewrite mbr?

Here's an interesting one: I have had occasion to use FDISK /MBR to rewrite the MBR on a hard drive. How do you tell it which drive to write on (I have two)? Does it do all of them?

A related question: I keep reading all kinds of caveats about this command, like it's only good for up to 4 partitions, sometimes it doesn't work, etc. What should I be using instead (i.e., is there something better, more up-to-date)?

I have seen fixboot in the Windows recovery console mentioned, but that's no help when there is no Windows installed on the disk (i.e., if the disk is blank).

I have a Sony DVD+-RW/+-R.
dvd/cd ReWritable Drive
I copied a data file to a cd-rw and when I went in to make a change, I got a box telling me it was read only so I tried to take off the Read only attribute and I got a message saying access denied. Any thoughts as to what I should do next or what I've done wrong? I've tried 3 different cd-rw's from 2 new boxes (Maxell and Memorex) and I have looked at the file on the hard drive and it doesn't have the read only attribute checked before saving.

I have IBM RecordNow and Roxio software.

Answer:Can't rewrite to my cd-rw

Any file written to a cd will be read only . .

When you wrote the file to the cd-rw did you have the software set to "close CD" . . or "Finalize CD" . . if you leave it open, you should be able to add files, but it will not be readable on another cd-rom

Question: Rewrite mbr

I plan on installing Ubuntu 11.10 very soon, and I know that when I do it rewrites the grub bootloader to the mbr of my hard drive.

So my question is is there something like a diskpart or cmd code to rewrite the Windows 7 loader to the MBR (As in it loads first).

And please don't say I won't be able to load Ubuntu if the W7L comes first, because it works now, and should work later since they didn't change much in it.

Answer:Rewrite mbr

You can find MBR save/restore utilities on the web. Seems to me I remember from my Linux days that grub makes a backup of the MBR during install. I haven't tried Ubuntu in some time. But I used Mandrake 9.1 for quite some time. If you have broadband over a network card the One CD is excellent. Also I found the partitioning tool much more intuitive if you decide to take it off and go back to Windows only. Now they call Mandrake "Mandriva" but there's still a OneCD. Basically it's Mandrake version 10 with a new name.

Here's an MBR utility but there are other free ones around:

Plan on rewriting a 16bit VB3 application, which anguage and database.
The program will be distributed to quite a few organizations and needs to accommodate up to 100 concurrent users.
VB6 or Delphi ?

Sounds like Delphi is faster and has less supporting files = less conflicts.

Prefer a SQL type, but they all appear to carry high runtime distribution costs. So Access,Foxpro,
or ..

Any thoughts ??

Answer:Rewrite 16bit vb3 with ?

As for the database, check out Sybase SQL Anywhere (also called Adaptive Server Anywhere). This is a full SQL solution, much better than Access, and easy upgradable to a multi-user version and to the more powerful Adaptive Server Enterprise DB.

The older Anywhere versions came with a "runtime engine" that could be distributed for free. This engine has some limitations, but can be used for non-critical applications.

My brother recently gave me his old computer (Windows XP), but as fate has it has forgot the password to it. Natyrally i could restart everything on it, but their are many files and programs that I installed or stored on his comp when he let me. Is there any way to rewrite or erase the current password without having to go through risky procedures or tedious programming?PS: I am a noob at computers, so I hope to learn from problematic solutions and avoid the same.

Welcome to the forum. It is very important to use a password you can remember, buy not something that others would guess. Next time write you password on the back of something you always carry with you. Like a card listing your medications or something like that.Meanwhile, we recommend that you contact the manufacture of the computer for the best way to reset the password. How to do this depends on what method was used and what computer you have and some other variables. Using the wrong method could result is lose of data or even making the PC dysfunctional.Of course, that does not always happen, but I would not want to take the responsibility of causing you lose something that is very valuable to you and would cause you pain.Contact the maker of the PC and provide the serial number and model number. In most cases they will not change you for the information if you provide a return e-mail address. And you may need to give them some addition information, such as a where you where you bought the computer

Here's my problem :

Actually i got 4 SATA HDD :

0 : Primary HDD (MBR + bootable files + Windows XP SP2) [120 GB]
1 : Secondary HDD (bootable + Windows XP SP2) [200 GB]

[The two others one doesn't matter]

Here a screenshot of PM 8.0, it will be easier to understand

On my 120GB HDD was my old Windows XP SP2 installation, i have bought a NEW 200GB HDD (the second one) cause my first one was damaged (still damaged, work sometime, got some weird noise...).

I have installed Windows XP SP2 on my new 200GB HDD, by the way my bootfiles (boot.ini / ntldr / ... ) are on my FIRST HDD (the 120GB one which is damaged). My MBR is on that drive too.

So i need at moment my damaged drive too boot my fresh Windows XP installation (on the new 200GB drive).

What i want to do is :

Put the MBR on the 200GB working drive, and boot from that disc directly.
REMOVE PHYSICALLY my 120GB damaged drive and throw it away.

But i really don't know how to do that, and maybe i'll have some problem cause letters of my drives will change :< Well i need a kind of step by step tutorial.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:How to copy a MBR or rewrite it to another HDD ?

If i'm not mistaken this will not solve your dilemna for a few reasons...
An MBR is specific to the drive it is written on as it contains info about that specific drive: heads sectors etc.
It also holds the volume label for that specific drive as well which again isn't interchangeable.
If you copy an MBR from one drive to another you could render that drive inoperable.

Maybe someone else will check in with more info...

Question: DVD rewrite drive

If I put a blank dvd disk into my dvd rewrite drive it causes a computer warm reboot, on one occasion after 3 attempts it caused corruption to the OS and a terminal crash. I reloaded from an external hard drive with complete backup, this backup was 2 months old, when this problem wasn't present, but the problem is still there. After a cold reboot the drive does recognise a blank disk occasionally. Is this a registry problem as the drive plays recorded disks.

Answer:DVD rewrite drive

My old DVD rewriter was the same it would read DVD's and CD's but would not recognise a blank disc, the lazer was scattering the light even when reading disc's they used to come out of the drive fairly warm just after 30 seconds of use. I had to replace the unit.

i`m trying to find out of there is a limit as to the number of times a cd-rw and dvd-rw can be written to.thanks for your well informed replies.

Answer:Is there a rewrite limit ?

How many times can I write over a CD-RW disc? What happens once the limit of the media has been reached? The CD-ReWritable specifications guarantee at least 1,000 times. Some media manufacturers expect to have media available by the end of this year that can be re-written more than 10,000 times. Intelligent software, like the drag & drop file system UDF, prevents "wearing out" of particular areas on the disc (bad areas are copied to a new place on the disc), making the overwrite limitation a non-issue

Answer:Solved: CD-Rewrite

Have you tried using a known blank disc from a different batch of discs?

Exactly what burning software are you using? Does it not even attempt to burn or does it try to burn and then stop with an error message?

Any software only diagnostic test may not detect a hardware failure in the electronics used to drive the burning laser diode or falure of the laser diode itself. You may have a failed drive.

I want to clean my hard drive properly and opt for both rewrite using ERASER and reformat.

which one should I do first or does it matter?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Rewrite and then reformat or the other way round?

If you want to remove all traces of all data on the hard drive and then do a clean installation of the operating system you might want to consider using a program like Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) overwrite all sectors on the hard drive with random data. The hard drive will then need to be reformatted before anything else can be installed. I believe that most recent Windows installation CDs will detect an unformatted hard drive and give you the option to format and partition the drive before installing Windows.

From what little I have read about Eraser, it will remove files so that they can not be easily recovered but will not remove the existing operating system files.

My daughter tried to copy a music cd - after trashing 2 cd's trying to copy directly from the cd [in the cd rom drive ] to a blank cd [in the rewrite drive] buffer underrun. I slowed the write speed down to 2x and this appeared to be working, but then it suddenly crashed.
I am using easy cd creator and now having trashed 3 cd's I decided to try a differant approach. I used the copy cd option - copied the cd to the hard drive first, then write to cd.
Everything appeared to be going fine, upto track 10 of 15 tracks, when up pops an error message - buffer overflow.could not write track 11 because track 10 was not completed
Is this because the rewrite was writing to slow? and the cache created by reading the cd rom had become full? thus causing the cd-rom to ditch some of the cache [to continue reading] and the ditched cache was required by the rewrite to finnish track 10.
Is my assumpion correct? If I increase my write speed from 2x to 4x will this cure the problem? or will it just lead to buffer underrun?

when u use cd-rw disk do you just record over whats on the disk or do you have to do something to clear it up so you can reuse it again?

puter hater

Answer:Silly question on rewrite disks.........

If you use packet writing software like DirectCD or InCD you format the RW and it becomes like a big floppy or slow hard drive. You can overwrite or erase individual entries.

If you use mastering software to write to RW you donít format the CD and write to it just as if it were a CDR. You have to erase the entire CD to reuse it.

Toshiba Satellite L40-14B (Catalog Number: PSL4CE-004005G3)

I downgraded my Laptop to WinXP (from Vista) and I wanted to update BIOS with Toshiba version for XP (5.50). I did all right but even 2 seconds after clicking the .bat file to launch the process, Windows has interfered with a critical message and restart my computer.

It restarted, (***) entered "BIOS ROM Utility V1.16 Crisis Recovery", a progress bar indicated that old bios was erased; after that another progress bar indicating the flash process stopped after 2 seconds (1cm); ?flash error? message appeared; the ?utility? tried again to erase BIOS (first progress bar again); ?erase error? message has appeared. ?The POST will continue? or something like that is displayed, and all is blocked and disabled. After a long time of useless praying I removed the battery from my laptop and go ahead again (power on). And everything is happening identical (again and again) from the mark above (***).

It was somewhat strange, especially since, after rebooting I could access BIOS. Without hard disk the laptop shut down in 3 seconds.

I analyzed the content of hard drive and discovered a new file, named T20.BIN (1M - probably with the BIOS image) in C:\.

I think that when laptop is powered on he does not find the BIOS, it search for BIOS image file in the root of active partition on hard drive, load it (T20.BIN), starts "BIOS ROM Utility V1.16 Crisis Recovery" and you know the rest ?

Answer:Satellite L40 - Rewrite procedure for BIOS

Hi lonutS,

That?s a pretty long story but I think the case is clear: Something went wrong due BIOS update and now the ROM module needs to be reflashed. Normally the BIOS will be updated in Windows and not after a restart or something else so probably the ROM module is erased now but no new version was flashed.

> Any idea? (Not ASP. I mean good ideas.)
Does anyone has L40 Maintenance manual or only BIOS Rewrite Procedures?
Why not ASP? That?s the best idea and may I ask you what kind of answer do you expect? Here it?s only an user to user forum so nobody here can give you the technical manual or BIOS recovery tool especially for this notebook. These utilities only have an ASP and Toshiba itself.

Here in forum are similar threads about BIOS recovery so maybe you should read them but don?t forget that everything happens on your own risk! If you don?t have success, I think the only option is contacting an ASP. ;)

Hello Lenovo Community! I am romanian.
I own a Lenovo G570 laptop. Two days ago I flashed BIOS with  NWL (NoWhiteList) and ADV (ADVanced menu unlocked). All thinghs ok until I went to Video Config and set Primary Display from SG to PEG. I thought that PEG is abbreviation from PciExpressGraphics, but I discovered it comes from Peripheral Graphics. Since then, BIOS can't see my video card and can't boot, can't enter in bios, can't nothing, only black screen.
Things I tried:
1. Reset CMOS with CMOS battery method. It reset only the BIOS password, not entire BIOS settings.
2. I followed this tutorial ; Andy P?s SLIC tool from My Digital Life results that my BIOS recovery file name is "". I downloaded the original BIOS for G540 and G570 from Lenovo site, extract it with 7zip to find BIOS bin file. I renamed PIWG2219.bin to PIWG1.bin and I placed it in root of 4GB stick FAT formated with 64kb.
I took out my DVD and HDD.
If I put only the HDD back (without DVD, USB or alimentation battery inserted), when I start laptop normally, at normal fan speed, it beep once. So laptop can see HDD. I took out HDD.
If I insert in laptop only the the USB stick, it beep once. So laptop can see my USB stick.
I keep in lapto USB stick. I keep out of laptop the alimentation battery and the power cord. With these two disconnected I hold Fn+B. I reconnect only the power cord. I press t... Read more

Next upgrade question: does the upgrade installer completely rewrite the master boot record?

I ask because the Adobe RoboHelp program writes authorization to the MBR (even though Microsoft says no program should do that) - if it gets blown out the app will not run and I'll have to jump through many hoops to get Adobe to re-activate it.

Answer:Does Win7 upgrade rewrite entire MBR?

I would do a clone of the drive before installing then, just to be sure.

I'm not sure if this happened with 5.55, but with 5.56, when I hit the volume up or down on my keyboard to turn the sound down for everything, it turns down winamp's volume bar too. Sometimes I can move winamp's volume bar up and down and it won't even be working. What causes this? It's pretty annoying for the music to turn down twice as fast or winamp's volume bar to not even work at all.EDIT: Moved to a more appropriate forum

I deleted mi1.exe because Norton said it was adware but then my computer froze and now when I start it up I get a blue screen that says: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. Technical Information: STOP 0x000000ED (0x82F8E3680, xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)" I have tried to start in Safe Mode, Normal Mode, and Last Known Good Configuration but I get this same screen every time. I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help me? (Dell Latitude C400 using Windows XP Pro)

Answer:Deleted Mi1.exe then "Unmountable Boot Volume" error

I contacted Dell customer support on a live chat and we tried to restore the system to a date when it was working but windows was corrupt and I had to completely reinstall Windows XP. I wouldn't touch the Mi1.exe file if I were you. The upside is that the Dell rep was really nice and explained things well so at least I know I have good support from the manufacturer.

I have the following bit of code as part of an Excel macro:

'In G1, enter formula to apply 6 character French code for AUT vehicles
ActiveWindow.ScrollColumn = 1
Application.Goto Reference:="R1C7"
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = _

I'd like to be able to add more IFs to it, but there are already 7 conditions in there, which I believe is the max number of nested IFs allowed.
Specifically, at present, I want to add:

But I may need to add more in the future.

Can someone help me write this in a better way? I'm no VB genius...

So this is the first virus I've seen that targets developers! My NOD32 a few days' ago started showing that my source code folders were infected with Fujacks, and were embedding IFRAME source in my C# .aspx files. NOD32 wanted to completely delete my source code, so rather, I just removed the IFRAME references the virus put in the text (remembering that .aspx files are simple text files, nothing more.)Next day, same routine. This time I allowed NOD32 to kill the offending files.Next day, it returned, and so it continues ad nauseum. I've tried to search through the registry and system32 folders to find the virus, but I'm buggered if I can find it anywhere!Coming to the brightest minds on the internet for this sort of thing, I humbly submit my attach.txt file for the Brainiacs out there to tell me what part of my computer is giving me so much grief.Yours in code, NonSapiens

Answer:Fujacks! (and its attempts to rewrite my own source code)

No-one interested in helping me out here?===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been res... I just cleaned a machine for a real estate inspector. Without going into much detail, A Trojan Multiple Fraud Alert thingy? rolleyes .. Layers of persistent, regenerating nastiness that looked like it had been allowed to fester till the machine fell on it?s face.

Everything hidden. Malware fighting the cleaning process. Executables inoperable.. you know the story?.

After winning the fight (except for iexplore.exe running in the background)
Malwarebytes ? clean (after several scans)
Combo Fix - clean (after several scans - found root kits twice)
MBR - Rewritten (twice)

But ?iexplore.exe? still running in background (usually two instances).

I reasoned: ?If rewriting the MBR didn?t clear it, (as it usually does) the problem is not in the MBR.?

What I found:
For lack of a better way of putting it, this ?infection? seemed to be ?buried? under ie8, which had been updated from ie6, before sp3 was installed. (rendering ie8 un-removable without first backing out of sp3 - winXP)

After uninstalling these mal-timed layers of dis-ordered updates, running scans, and putting everything back together in the correct order, the machine is clean, with no iexplore.exe running in the background.

Answer:iexplore.exe still running in background AFTER scans & MBR rewrite

So you do not actually require any assistance with malware removal? Just checking. I am sure you were just stating what you did worked for you, however if you wish to be sure all remnants of malware have gone you can follow these procedures, unless the machine is back in the hands of it's owner.

a video joining tool (unknown) was used to split an old avi family video, but I used a different tool (hjsplit) to rejoin it. whilst the video plays fine in windows (vlc player), it no longer plays in some players and on some non pc systems. It seems to be missing all of its basic info from the properties tab (whichh usually shows format/resolution/frame rate etc). In properties it simply states one sentence-"unavailable for selected source". The file according to Gspot and other video file checking programs is in divx/mp4 format. Since the most basic of information (eg the file format in properties) is missing, thats prob why it doesnt play on other systems and some other players, so I am wondering if there are any tools that can scan my avi and rewrite all of its basic information back into its file properties tab? ..whilst avoiding having to use a conversion program that might lose quality in the process (eg avi to avi). thanks for any help
