Always Use this program to open this kind of file

Question: Always Use this program to open this kind of file

I was editing a .cfg file for half life 2 and used the "open with" and click "Always use this program" and checked it, and used Notepad to open it.

It worked fine and I could open the file.
Once I played the game, the "startup videos" would no longer play for ANY hl2 engine game! I knew it was because I changed the default open program.

So, I tried to find the default program the cfg used before I changed it.....
I thought it was Microsoft Outlook, or Express?
Well yeah, I decided to use that, and checked Always use this program..

Obviously it was a mistake..

After that, I wanted to change it again, and used "open with" again.
This time I get a problem.

PROBLEM: The "Always use this kind of program" is now greyed out! ONLY for the cfg file extension and I cant find a workaround! I downloaded a registry that enables the "always use" for every file, but the cfg files remain unchanged! It is still greyed out no matter what - using Microsoft Outlook.

Is there a way to change the default open program to whatever it was way before I decided to edit it?
What should I do to once again to check the "always use"?
Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Always Use this program to open this kind of file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just bought a new Windows 7 machine. I am trying to permanently associate my pdf files with Acrobat Reader 9.3. I can choose it one time each but the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" window is grayed out so I can not permanently open with the Reader.
Sure hope someone can help

First off I have Windows 7 on my PC. I was trying to open an application file in a particular program. So I used Open with> Choose default program> I choose Windows Media Player. But I didn't realize that the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" check box was checked. So now every application file in my computer is a .wma file. This means that can't open anything except real .wma files.

Everytime I try to run a system restore the antivirus program stops it. But I can't turn it off because I can't access it. Everything else in the computer runs fine except for the fact that I can't open application files.

Is there a way to fix this without resetting the computer.

Right now I am using my laptop.

When I try to associate a file with a program by clicking on "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" it is greyed out. I double click on the file I want to open, select the program (Sigmaview) from the list of progams and the file opens but I don't want to have to select the program from the list every time I need to open a file of this type. Does anyone know how to enable the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" tick box?

Answer:Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is greyed out

Follow the directions here - you may have to create a Dword entry if it doesn't exist.

IT seems that excel doesnt have a program registered to open hyperlinks. You will have to register a browser to open it.

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.
:-(

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type
From: ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
//click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=DKrkLM3KmGA&offerid=78941&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fphobos.apple.com%252FWebObjects%252FMZStore.woa%252Fwa%252FviewAlbum%253Fi%253D27672884%2526id%253D27672964%2526s%253D143441%2526partnerId%253D30
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

My Issue:

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. I have a computer that is a drone specifically for an outside LED sign. This computer is designed to never shut off and doesn't have any other program on it besides Operating System and the sign software. I need to create a batch file that I can place in the "start-up" folder that will open the program (LEDStudio10) and open the file that I want to play. I have already tried multiple attempts and I was hoping someone out there in sevenforums world would be able to point me in the right direction.

Answer:batch file open file for program in the startup folder

Task Scheduler. Create a new/basic task. You can invoke your batch script there. This can occur after boot completes, after user logon, etc. You can set it to run daily weekly hourly, etc. You can even have it delay X (preseleted time amounts) minutes/hours after boot/logon if you want.

The problem occurred after I ran Spybot (latest version) and now I can't open any file or run any program. All the icons have become blank. When I click on a some short cut or files, nothing happens. I right click and the usual options like "Open" are gone, but "Cut, Copy, Create shortcut, Delete, Rename, and Properties" work.

For some files I get I get an error saying:

"C:\....lnk
The parameter is incorrect"

or when I click control panel

"::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I've tried running System Restore through the command prompt, but my previous restore points have all disappeared.

I can run CCleaner though through clicking my Recycle Bin and a bunch of registry errors show up. But I tried that and rebooted with no effect.

Would really appreciate help on this matter.

I have received an attachment and when I try to open it, windows asks me if I want to use the web to find a program or select a program with a list, which is the program I have to select to open a .dat file

Answer:what program to open a .dat file

There is no single programme that will open a .dat file. .dat is short for data and there are numerous applications that generate .dat files, all different and incompatible with each other. You could try Notepad and see if that produces readable data but depending on the format, it may not.You need to get back to whoever sent you the Email and ask them what they used to create the file.Stuart

This is the message I now get when I try to run a program. I got a message this morning about virus threat or Trojan (I can't remember exactly and I am not an expert). I said to sent to vault, and everything kind of slowed down. It took 15 minutes for the computer to shutdown .
When I turned it on, lots of icons were missing on the task bar at the bottom of the screen (AVG, printer, etc were not appearing). I tried to run AVG using the program directory and got that message: what program do you want to use to open this file. I still have access to Internet Explorer, and when I try to download a new program I get the same question when it is time to run it.
If I try to open Word or Excel I get an Application not Found message. I try to open items in the Control Panel, and get the Application not Found message, accompanied with C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe.

I use Windows XP

how i can fix those problems ?

For your first problem, look no further than Unlocker. Goodle it, download and install, it will release any system locks on the file so that you can move or delete it.

As for deleted folders still being visible until F5... I've not heard of that happening before, no suggestions sorry.

I clicked on a link in a website of a local State Representative. A box came up saying "You have chosen to download a file from this location", and then it asks "What would you like to do with this file?" I chose "Open this file from it's current location". After the file downloaded, it asks "What program would you like to use to open this file?" So far, I have not found anything that will allow me so see the file.

I am assuming that it is a text type file, and I tried wordpad and notepad. What I end up seeing is a whole lot of little symbols with a few words here and there. How do I know what program to "choose" to open this kind of thing?
This has happened to me before with some attachments to emails I received, but I gave up on them!

I hope someone can explain this to a self-proclaimed "computer ninny"!

I recently ran Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and appeared to remove a virus, but I can only run programs in administrator, if I don't run the programs in administrator it tells me: "Choose the program you want to use to open this file."

I have Windows 7 32 Bit.

Some of my start up items on my side bar are missing as well (Logitech Set Point for example), and many others. This has to do with registry values I'm assuming? How do I fix this?

Thank you for any help.

Fixed it, thread can be closed. For those with the same problem and are running Windows 7, try this.

Periodically I'm getting files 'stuck' and when I go to delete them I get the "File Open In System" thing. I've checked all the usual places - NOTHING will delete these files. I think they are all .bin or .iso's that have been opened with UltraISO. I haven't found anything in UltraISO to force close them.

Are there any file system repair utilities that might unlock these files?

Answer:File open in another program prob

I'm not familiar with UltraISO.

To delete stuck files, try file unlocker:

how to force any *.sdf file to open with My program ?

for example: every *.sdf file will open with this program: d:\MyProg.exe

i need any registry value for this

how to do it ?

thanks in advance

Answer:how to force any *.sdf file to open with My program ?

Don't know how to do it with a manual Registry entry.

As an alternative, right click the data file, select "open with", browse to the .exe you wish to use, make sure that the checkbox for using the chosen program is checked, and open the file with the program of your choice.

Hello,

Everytime I restart my laptop, I get this pop up "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" for a file that has no extension, or at least the extension of the file isn't shown. I tried opening the file with notepad and get some sort of list with the title "Interface List".

I checked my startup folder and it was empty.
This problem only started a few days ago, and I can't recall doing anything different other than installing Symantec Endpoint Protection and running a full scan.

Any suggestions? I can upload print screens if necessary.

Hello numhum, welcome to Seven Forums!

It would also be a good idea to run some other virus scans, at the link below download and install the free version of Malwarebytes, when installed run a full scan of the complete PC, if it finds something run additional scans until it comes clean.

I know it's possible to open a specific file type on a specific program (using default programs or "open with" context menu). But I was wondering if it's possible to apply that on a specific file, not file type.

For example, I have 4 videos (vid1.avi, vid2.avi, vid3.avi, vid4.avi) and I want vid1.avi to open in WMP (by default) while the other 3 in another video player like MPC (also by default). Is it possible?

Answer:Is it possible to set a specific file to open with another program?

Not by default, but you could do it using a new shortcut.

Create a shortcut to the player.
"C:\folder\player.exe"

Then add the path to the file you want to play so the shortcut points to:

"C:\folder\player.exe" "D:\videos\avi1.avi"

Another option is to change the file extension to something unused e.g. .bvi instead of .avi and then associate the .bvi extension to the player you want for that file

Another option is to convert the file to another known format and associate that with the alternate player.

This bug been going on for a while, on my win7 64bit. When I am done downloading anything through torrent (and no, I am talking legit files here), I can't move them to anywhere else, when I chose to cut them out and paste in new location it says it can't move the folder/file because it is open in another program.

Only solution I found is to kill and restart explorer.exe, but program comes back after just a couple of minutes. Even if torrent program is closed as well.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

Answer:The folder or a file in it is open in another program.

Test with a clean boot to discover the culprit.

Hello,

I recently removed malware of a fake virus scanner in safe mode. After restarting I am now unable to open .exe files such as firefox, malwarebytes, etc., and instead I am prompted to "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." If I right click and "Run as Administrator" the file will load properly.

Attached are DDS logs and GMER logs.

This is happening on Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3.I get the error "Choose the program you want to open this file" when trying to open Firefox. It happens for every other EXE (like calc) as well, but only in Normal Mode. When I'm in Safe Mode, everything works fine. It's weird because I cancel the error and it actually pulls up an Untitled webpage in Firefox and lets me browse. Many sites have mentioned an EXE reg fix which I have merged with my registry in Safe Mode and it has no affect on being able to open EXEs in Normal Mode.Other steps I have taken include a full Spybot S&D scan/removal, a thorough HijackThis scan/removal, GMER scan/removal, ComboFix scan/removal, MalwareBytes Antimalware scan/removal, and ESET's free online virus scanner.I have performed all these diagnostic steps in Safe Mode with Networking.I even went into Set Program Access & Defaults to ensure that Firefox was selected as my default browser.Any other ideas to get rid of this error besides the steps I took above?

Answer:Choose the program you want to open this file

Did you try a different browser, in case it'a Firefox issue?

Did you try uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox?

Are you saying that you cannot run any .exe file in normal mode...but they all work in safe mode?

Hi, I'm a newbie to this site and am hoping someone out there, who is a lot better with computers than me, will be able to help. I am having a very similar problem to the one discussed here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/913209-solved-choose-program-you-want.html

Norton removed a virus and now I seem to be having problems opening files etc.

I having a very similar problem right down to the scroll function on the touchpad not working. When I try to open programs from my desktop or from the start menu I get the following message:

Choose the program you want to use to open this file.

When I try to open Microsoft Office programs I get the following:

C:/program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\ Office12\EXCEL.EXE

Application not found.

OR

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel

I can open both Internet Explorer and Windows Live Mail, but they seem to be the only 2 at present.

I have tried your suggested fix - downloading the .exe fix and merging it with the registry. I get the following message:

The keys and values contained in C:\Users\Claire\Desktop\exefix_cu.reg have been successfully added to the registry.

But no change to my problems.

Hope I have given you enough info. I'm not that great at computer jargon so please be patient with me and let me know if you need any more info. Any suggestions and help gratefully received

Thanks

Shawn,
I am having trouble with .eml files that are attached to emails. Win 7 says that there is no program designated to open the file. I use the information in this thread to gain entry to the list - lo and behold .eml is already listed. So I uncheck it and recheck it and rebuild the file (several times) but, it never shows in the program used to associate it There must be more to the list file. What do you suggest?

Answer:No program designated to open the .eml file

Hello JD, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What email client program (ex: Windows Live Mail) do you have installed in Windows 7? Whatever one you do have installed, it will need to be made the default program first.

Hope this helps for now,

I got my PC infected with some spyware and virus from online.

I used avast and AVG to get rid of the virus.

Every time I try to open any program, my PC asks me to "Choose the program you want to open this file". So I have to go to run as administrator and use the file. I tried to go to Control Panel and try using the Add/Remove program to check if there was any program I can use to fix this problem. But none of the programs in the Control Panel work.

even if i try running regedit, a message comes up saying "C:Windows\regedit.exe Application cannot be found"

i tryied a system restore, but there was an error message for that too, i just dont remember what it said
This happens for each and every application in the Control Panel. The next thing I tried to do was go for the Desktop properties. By right clicking on the desktop, I go to properties. It says the same thing.

I'm on my moms laptop, which she let me bring with me to my dads house, and I downloaded Manycam last night to screen share with my friend. Today, something that I assume was a virus, in the form of a virus scanner, popped up, called Win 7. It kept telling me to buy their product because my computer was at risk. I showed my dad and he told me to download Malware, and I did and did a real virus scan. I had 26 virus (At least 6 trojan), which were all removed. I rebooted her computer and tried to open Firefox. It told me "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" The only reasonable one was IE so I chose that one. IE opened and started to load but it closed out, and it told me "Do you want to run or save this file?" I chose run, and then it told me "Do you want to run this software?" I chose Run. Then the whole process started over, and there was no end. The same thing happened when I tried to open IE. I tried to reboot the computer again, but no luck..

Any solutions? (I have until Tuesday to fix this)

Answer:Choose the program you want to use to open this file

what was the "virus scanner" you used as you have to be careful about ones that pop up whilst on the internet, as the results are fake and will actually install more viruses on when you click download this to remove the viruses, but with your issue you most likely need to re-install windows or get a good quality virus scanner like norton or kaspersky to thoroughly search your computer to remove all the viruses and try to recover the data you may have lost

hope this helps

Hi there
this usually happens because a system or background service is running -- usually the culprit is something like Adobe updater or any of those little programs that might be running when you look at the tray on the right hand bottom of your screen --where the arrow is -- not quite to the complete right corner or you'll get the charms bar.

Go into control panel and look at SERVICES -- disable or stop the ones that are using your program. (This is different from the APPLICATIONS as the problem sounds like it's a background service which is using the file(s) you want to delete not an APPLICATION.

You'll need also to look at the task manager to see whats actually running - both applications and services.

If you can't figure it out take these 3 screenshots and maybe it should be clear what to stop.

1) Running services
2) running applications
3) name of program or file you want to delete.

Cheers
jimbo

I performed a Safe Mode boot; tried to delete it and still it was being used by another program.

The file name is shellext.dll. It's location is C:/Programs & Files/ Microsoft Security Client.
How can find out what program has opened it and close it?

Answer:How can I close a file that is open in another program ?

I seems that the file is part of MSE antivirus and the file is the shell extension that provides shortcuts inside Windows Explorer. Why you want to delete that?
Even if you manage to do so, having a missing file might cripple MSE or create problems with Windows explorer.

Hi,

Last night when I double clicked on my C Drive it asked me to "Choose a program to open with the following file: C:\"! First time seen this here. It was the same for the D Drive as well. I tried googling for this problem and found that few people were also complaining about it, and blaming it on viruses/corrupt system.

Anyway, I scanned with my Anti-Virus, Avast Home Edition on boot and found few viruses and deleted:

C:\Windows\System32\SocksA.exe infected by Win 32:VB-BBA [Trj]
C:\Windows\System32\abgsvc.exe with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}
C:\Windows\System32\wykmjhic.dll with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}

C:\Program file\VideoAddon\isfmm.exe with Win32:Zlob-AIK [Trj]
C:\Program file\VideoAddon\ctmdl.dll with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}

C:\System Volume Information...

I also scanned with Bit Defender and Kaspersky Online Scanners. Kaspersky Online said 'Object is locked... skipped'. I don't know what that means but I uninstalled Avast and downloaded and installed Kaspersky trial version. I Scanned with it and it detected and deleted:

It attempts to connect to a predefined IRC server and join a specific channel so that the victim's computer can be controlled. The IRC server, port number, channel and password differ with each variant.Rbot also listens on TCP port 113 to provide ident services, which are required by some IRC servers.Once the victim's computer is under control, the overseer is able to instruct Win32.Rbot to attempt to perform malicious operations such as spreading via administrative shares with weak passwords or the DCOM RPC exploit. The backdoor can also be instructed to:download and execute files from the Internet retrieve system information such as Operating System details retrieve CD keys for certain computer games, if p... Hi Experts,

I am having this problem of choosing the program to open any file. I can not even open regedit.exe as suggested in some other solutions to this problem. I can not run any exe file as it asks me to select the program. I need urgent expert help. I have Vista home premium

thanks

Answer:choose the program you want to use to open this file

Hi and welcome!

Try this: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the desktop. Right click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note: You need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Restart your computer.

If the fix opens as a text file then right click it and select Open With > Choose Program Then, select Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Hello,
I'm not sure how this happened, but now every time I open a csv for Excel the file tries to open in EnZip instead of just opening in Excel like it used to. How can I make it not open in EnZip? It's a file I'm downloading from an Internet interface so I can't right click on it and select Open With. What do I do?

Hello, i'm wondering if it is possible to change a open with option back to unknown application on some files. i accidentally clicked open with the picture opener and its stuck on it now. how can i revert this? step by step if possible.

Thank you.

Answer:How to change a file's open with program to when i first downloaded it

Go to Default Programs in Control Panel open it, select Set your Default Programs. First off you need to know the extension of this file you do not want any program to open, example, jpeg, gif..etc.. Select each program that can open this file and uncheck that extension for it, then would be back to unknown.

I got a virus asking me to buy some kind of virus software. Of course I did not buy it. I ran norton antivirus and malware bytes right away. Norton removed a virus and malware did not find anything. After that when I went to click on Internet Explorer and microsoft word it would ask me to pick a program to use to open this file.

I looked around on this site (tech support guy) and I found a post that said to do this......

"Go here File association fixes for Windows Vista and download the fix for EXE files.
Extract the enclosed .reg file to your desktop, then double click it to merge into the registry. "

I did that and all seems to be working fine now. My question is how do I know if the virus or spyware are totally gone off my computer.

Do I need to download a newer version of the malware bytes because mine is about 1 year old?

Hello,

I have come to this website because I am at my wit's end with what to do about this piece of malware I have.

I downloaded rkill and Combofix. I have Malware Bytes installed, but I am unable to run or open any of them. My task manager is clouded with consent.exe. Every time I try to open a file, another consent.exe appears in the task manager. I was able to run my anti-virus (Vipre) through hidden icons, but it only found:

fraudtool.win32.fakerean.d

with 2 traces. About a week and a half ago I got rid of (but not completely) a variant of the fake Win 7 Anti-Virus virus', and I'm sure it just crept back up on me. Also I can't run DDS, GMER or Hijack This for a log.

I can access the task manager and Firefox, but that's about it. I'm sure that's just so that it can steal any valuable information I ever put in (bank accounts, etc). When I open my start menu I can't select anything, I used to be able to expand the lower task bar to access mycomputer, but that just got locked up.

I'm running Windows 7 Starter Edition (never again will I ever get a Windows computer after this one...) on a Toshiba netbook.

What can I do from here?

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Good morning,

I'm having a problem, the newest windows update has caused one of my programs to not work. It is a CAD/CAM software called UCANCAM. The program will open and seems to work great until you attempt to save, open, import, ect. I called the manufacture of our machine that supplied the program, he said to uninstall the program and reinstall. Problem is when trying to uninstall a error message pops up saying "Can't open log file" not sure what to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cody

Answer:Unable to remove program (can't open log file)

Sounds like you will have to contact the manufacture of the computer once again and tell them that your having issues uninstalling the program, perhaps they have instructions for a manual removal, then you may need there help to re-install the program. I assume you have the software where you can re-install it correct? If you do not have the software, you need to get that first before you go and uninstall anything.

Using Windows XP Service Pack 3It's an E-Machine brand computer, almost a year old.Well ok. I got all these viruses and got rid of them. Well then all of a sudden the Windows Antivirus bull crap that isn't even real was popping up so I looked up to get rid of it. I deleted the files and then I restarted the comp, when it came back up I would click on any icon, a game, internet, anything and it will ask me which program I want to open it with. I can't open anything! I believe that I deleted the wrong file or something, if someone could please help me out thanks.I know I could fix it if I could find my recovery disc but somehow I seem to have lost it  and so I can't do that...PS: I am on my old comp right now which can't handle my games  .

Answer:Asks me to choose a program to open file with for EVERYTHING!

How did you delete those files? If they are in the recycle bin you are in luck or if you used something like  "easy cleaner" which has an undo button that might work also. Otherwise look real hard for the restore disk.  Beyond that you need someone more knowledgeable than me.  LOL wannabe1

I had been using my Dell Inspiron 531 in Safe Mode with Networking for a while, after applying Roxio Easy Media Center 9. I didn't worry when my CA antivirus subscription ran out because I figured Safe Mode would give adequate protection. I ran a system restore recently. Then I installed Norton Internet Security 2009 right away, and ran full system scan several times, which found and fixed more than 200 security risks (oops!). Now I can run the machine outside of Safe Mode which is great, except for a new issue -- whenever I try to open virtually any .exe, I get blocked by the message:

"Choose the program you want to use to open this file."

I suspect some malware messed with the registry during the restore. I tried to run system restore again, but that too gets blocked by the new problem.

In researching the problem, I found some related hits for XP, but none that seemed to be specifically for Vista.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I'm trying to create a batch file to run a program that needs a "connect" button pressed to actually run after opening.
Is this possible?

There is no option within the program itself to connect automatically when opening, just the usual "launch at system start-up" which I don't want to use, since I need it very rarely.

This is a crucial part of a batch file that includes starting other programs at the same time, and everything works great, except having to manually "connect" this one program.

Hi,This is just a small nuisance but I hope someone may be able to help me with it.My default internet browser is Google Chrome, and I don't want to change this. However, there is a certain HTML file which (for reasons I couldn't be bothered explaining here) I always need to open in Firefox. To do this I need to start Firefox, then go to File/Open and select this file (because if I just click directly on this file then it will automatically open in Chrome).I would like to keep to be able to keep Chrome as my default internet browser, but to make this file automatically open with Firefox by just just clicking on it.Could anyone please tell me a way of configuring this? Thanks a lot.

I am trying to help a friend by writing a batch file to backup a data base. She currently has one which, I assume uses XP's built in write to CD soft ware, I have just installed a DVD writer for her and the batch file will no longer work. I thought that it would be possible to modify the file to open Nero and write to the dvd drive but I am not having much luck. Question is it possible to open and run a program from a batch file and if so what is the command for it.
I have tried "C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\nero.exe" and all I get is program is not a recognised command etc. Can any one help or should this old fool stick to playing games?

Answer:Make a batch file open a program in XP

open notepad type

cd "c:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero"
nero.exe

save as *.bat file

This will open the program from the batch file

I have been sent email with key file to open program it is unreadable as it is in notepad and is all characters

Answer:email key file to open program not working

What program? from Where? A key to activate a program is generally a string of letters and numbers that you enter during the install of a program. If you purchased a program that was downloadable, then you may have been emailed an activation key, but it generally will arrive in the body of the email text, or as an expirable link to a web page.
