Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

Question: Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

As Administrator, I?ve created my own folders for my documents. These are located in the D: partition of my hard drive; and they are shown in the Library section of the contents of the computer, on the left.
Now, when opening the computer from the Guest Account, my own folders do not appear in the Library, all right. But just below the Library there appears the rest of the computer content, including the D: partition, and any Guest can access all the folders and files there, including my documents.
How can I hide the folders of each User from any other Guests, not only in the Library but also in their actual location in the hard drives?
Thanks for any help.

Preferred Solution: Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

OK this appears to be a simple permissions issue.

go to your root folder on the D: drive and right click the folder and select properties.

on the security tab you should see a list of those who have access to the folder - Make sure that your user has full rights and remove all rights to the "everyone" user group. This when OK'd should xascade down to all files and folders contained in the folder

If you wish you can adjust the rights available to any other particular user on the system - Make sure that you do not remove or change any rights given to system or administrative users unless you fully understand the result

Hi,

I'm currently using Windows Sync centre to sync file to my laptop from the network so they can be accessed and worked on while disconnected from the server. The problem I have is that when I connect back to the server after having worked on a file when disconnected from the server the other users on the network can't see the file on the server even though it there are no sync conflicts or errors and I am able to see it on the server.

for some reason the file is hidden from the other users on the network whenever I sync a file I have worked on while offline.

Has anyone had any experience of this or know of a way to fix it.

Thanks

Answer:How to Not allow Guest users to see programs and files on other (admisistor) accounts

I have 8x users and I successfully prevent some of them to see the same stuff as the main user/admin can, and did it roughly as follows:

Chose the directory you don't want them to see, then rightclick and chose properties or found your way to security. The trick is to add the name of the user in security to that directory, and then block it ....Deny Access...You can now further hide that directory, and the user will normally not see it, but if he view it, he will get message=Access Denied.

The Guest:I would treat the Guest in similar way.

I have several users set up on my machine (local accounts), including 1 that I specifically use for things such as banking.
Aim here is obviously to keep that account as secure as possible.

The problem I have issues with is ...
Anyone trying to log into my machine, is presented with a list of available user accounts to choose from.
This obviously includes my 'banking' account.

My personal theory is this : if someone doesnot know a user account exists, they are less likely to try and get in it!
Hence I would like to hide this account, and like in previous versions of windows, force users to explicitly enter both username and password in order to gain access to my machine.

I know in W7, I had to do some fiddling in Policy Settings or suchlike to enable this .... but for the life of me I cannot remember how I did it exaclty.
I recall that for W7 it was an easy Google to get instructions - yet I am struggling with W8.

Anyone shed any light on how to do this ?

Many Thanks

Answer:Hiding available users at login ?

Hello Simon, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could set Windows to require users to enter both their user name and password on the sign in screen. This way they cannot see what accounts are available, and you do not have to disable the account for it to not show up in the list of users on the sign in screen.

Hope this helps,

I?m not sure why the ?Guest? and ?administrator? users are not displayed at start, switch users, log off modes?

? What might be the particularity of these two users (attached)?

? Why they have different icons notation? What does the little down arrow indicate for?

? How they can be displayed at start, switch users, log off modes (attached)?

I am the administrator for my laptop computer. But other people borrow it for presentations and log in as users. I want to be able to keep other users of my laptop (running XP Professional SP2) from seeing the programs that I have in the C drive programs folder.

I've searched for answers for this but unable to find a way. I've seen resolutions on how to keep other users from opening folders/programs or running programs - but they can still SEE the folder. I don't even want them to see my program folders.

How can I achieve this?
Much thanks!

Answer:Hiding Administrator's Programs From Other Users

See if this will work. Before you loan out the laptop, right click on the program files folder then click on properties. Near the bottom of the little window that pops up put a check mark by hidden. You can always reverse this when you get the laptop back.Orange Blossom

Is there a way to prevent some users in a Windows 2003 Domain from being able to list all the resources in a domain? Like when you add a printer, open my places, etc, you get a list of everything. I work in a school district and it would really help security if the student groups couldn't even see the servers they want to hack into.

Is there a way to hide the offline users and just show online users?

My Hp Pavilion has been a clean machine (due to your expert advise in the past),
until my adult son brought his comp to my business and logged onto the internet via my connection. Not sure where his comp. has been.

Now I have no Desktop. I cannot access any thing to try and see what has happened. I have blue fractal screen. Cannot access internet except thru. hp button on keyboard or thru another user acct.

I know you guys have the answer, and it's probably very simple.

I hope someone can help me as I am not the most technical user of a PC. So if a solution is posted please make it easy.

Here is my issue. I bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 and I probably set up stuff wrong at the start.

I set up my wife and 2 daughters as Administrators like me but I thought that they would not be able to see my Documents or Pictures or Music as my Profile has a password. But they were able to see all my Music, Documents and Pictures.

Previously in Windows XP, all our stuff was separate and they didn't see any of my files.

Thinking all I had to do was make them Standard Users and this would rectify the issue but obviously it didn't. I have left them at Standard Users hoping for a solution from you people here on this Forum.

So I am asking is there a way on Windows 8.1 to have my stuff Private for me and for no one to see it?

Thanks

Gary

Answer:Hiding Documents/Music/Pictures from Other PC Users

Just go to your User name folder as shown in the picture, my name is blocked out in Blue' right click a library folder then choose "Share With" then choose "Stop Sharing" for any particular Library folder that you don't want to share.

You need to do this because in Windows 8/8.1 the Users folder is shared by default so that people don't get confused on how to share the Users folders, sharing of the Username folder was not enabled with Windows 7.

Answer:How to prevent guest users from accessing the administrato

By default anyone using the guest account would be unable to access the desktop or files of any other account. This is by design. The rights of the guest account are the lowest of the low.

I would like to allow the "Guest" users to use my Dial up connection. When I log in as the Guest, I can't access any Internet connection. I heard I could fix this problem by changing the rights assigned to the Guest user account.
Can anyone be more explicit about that? How could I give the privileges related to using the dial-up internet connections to the Guest user group?
Thx.

Hi,First-timer here, hope you can help. I have a laptop with two external hard-drives. One holds games, music and movies, the other holds work-related spreadsheets and documents as well as personal documents. I have half-a dozen nieces/nephews who visit frequently and go to my "computer room" to play games and music, and watch movies, using the guest sign-on, which I don't mind in the least, but I'm worried that curiosity might lead them to opening and maybe deleting/damaging the material on the other drive. They probably know much more about PCs than I do. Is there a way I can protect the other hard drive so that they can't access it? Any help would be appreciated.

Its an external drive, unplug it and lock it in a drawer.

Basically, i was trying to look for my AppData file in my Vista computer. But i couldn't find it. So i thought it may be hidden, so i right clicked and ticked hidden and a process went about pretty much hiding everything i had. So after realising this i unhid everything and MOST of my things came back. My documents were still there thankfully but alot of things weren't.

Also, my "Users" folder has completely dissapeared. It is non existant.

Also, my quick toolbar at the bottom left next to the start button is also gone.
As with my Network folder and everything

Basically, i don't know if everything is hidden or is just completely reset or something.

I don't know if you need my specs but im not thinking straight right now.

Thanks

EDIT: Okay, i think i got my users folder back from hidden status. And a bunch of other stuff. My quick launch doesn't have the "show desktop" icon anymore which i found useful.

I work in a lab environment where we have an OpenLDAP Authentication and the Machines using Samba to join a domain to handle logging onto Windows workstations.
What we are looking for is to allow users to log on using their LDAP credentials, but not create a profile (Like a Guest Profile).  This is so we don't have to constantly try and purge profiles on the machine as it stacks up over time and these computers
are used by over 100s of people on a daily basis.

I am running Windows 10 Home. I the cmd window I run "net user guest /active:yes" and the command completes successfully. I run "net user" and it shows 4 accounts---my account, administrator, guest and default account.
User folder has Guest sub-folder.

When I try to switch to Guest user from my profile picture in start, I get black screen, then login screen for my account. Guest does not show on my login screen, but is active. It is a fast login, like it is switching back to my account.

I cannot get at Guest account in login, switch user or in "Accounts" in settings.
I have tried all tutorials in Tenforums that deal with switching accounts Switch User in Windows 10. I have searched on the internet and tried all suggestions.

The only thing I have not tried is to illegally download gpedit.msc and run it to add "Group policies" in "Windows Features." That was offered as a solution, but I don't want to take the chance to try it (malware on download.)

Guest account worked fine in Vista, Win 8 and 8.1. Why is this such a mystery in Win 10? Anybody got a fix that works?

Hoping someone can help me out with this.

I am running XP Home SP 3.

I have two local users (no networking) one is an admin (me) the the other is a limited user. I would like to hide two internal harddrives and one external (USB) harddrive from the limited user and restrict them from accessing it.

So when I log in, I want to see and be able to acces (read/wrtie) to all the drives.

When the limited user logs in, I do not want them to see or be able to access the drives - ideally they would only be able to access their 'Documents' folder.

Can this be accomplished in XP Home, or do I need to upgrade to XP PRo, Vista, 7?

If I do upgrade, how difficult is it to accomplish this?

I have tried using TweakUI, but this only works on the admin account (option for hiding does not show up when logged in as limited user).

I would consider setting up an additonal limited user for me if that would help.

Answer:Hiding/Restricting hard drives for Limited Users in XP Home

Hmmmm....

re: TweakUI
> you couldn't access the hide/display settings panel as a limited user
> That sounds right. A limited user shouldn't have registry access (which TweakUI does)
> Did you just look if the drives were hidden once you did it under Admin account?
Here's a post that tells how to do it manually, but it;s essentially what TweakUI does.

re: Setting Permissions
Essentially, you need access to the Security tab for a file/folder's Properties. As i recall, for XP Home you need boot into safe mode to see the Security tab. Then assign permissions as you please

This thread was about the August 14th "Patch Tuesday" patches causing this issue but I have since determined IE7 is the culprit. It is the most bizarre thing i have ever see in all my years of computing. Whatever IE7 did to the machine, even un-installing IE7 and reverting back to IE6, still keeps the system change that is causing this behavior to occur. It is certainly not the Group Policies as disabling them doesn't make a difference. What I need now is a tool that can show me a "before and after" of all changes that have occurred to figure out what's getting broken.

Hey Guys,

If you are using Kaspersky on Windows XP, and your Blue Shift is not working, I may have a solution for you. If you go into Kapersky, go to My Security Zone and then application activity. Go to Category and then click all. Scroll down until you find everything to do with Blue Shift ( Half Life Launcher, installation etc). Right click on each of these and change the status to Trusted. The game should work now. I hope this helps I've had the problem for a while and it was driving me nuts. I'd also like to thank the user "fragger" for giving me the idea to look at Kaspersky. Can anyone help me regain Security Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder which I lost while looking at the access rights. I mistakenly closed the box while playing with the access rights and lost any access to the file.
I pulled the access rights to the file using icacls they are below.

application data
D:PAI(D;OICI;FA;;;WD)(A;;0x1200a9;;;WD)(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)S:AI

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

Answer:Lost Access Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

hi guys,

really need some help on this one cause i cant seem to get how something that sounds so simple is so hard to do.

i got a client with a workstation that has a local user account on it.
they also have a domain which he has another account on there.

so i have local account joe1 and domain account joe2. now i need to get joe 1 to combind and merge outlook and my docs with joe2. and then get joe2 to stay on the server so that it remains a account that can be accesses on any computer on the domain network. with this in mind the user profile needs to be saved on the server and the profile can be copied to the computer that his sitting at when he loggs on.

anyway i can figure out how to move the local (joe1) account to the server (joe2)i have tried a command moveuser but i keep getting a parameter error on there (error 87) .

i typed it like this

moveuser joe1 (company doamin)\joe2 /c:\\(client machine)

please can anyone help me one this

User 1 logs in and works does whatever... Doesn't log out but screensaver goes back to user screen.

User 2 logs in (switching users - not logging out user 1) and gets to work.

Sometime later (ie. not right away) and not at a prescribed time, the network stops working.

I try to disable / enable the network adapter and the machine freezes.   Reboot fixes problem.

If user 1 or user 2 is the only one logged in then never a problem.

Anyone heard of this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

I don't remember when, but I availed myself of the free Windows 10 upgrade sometime back. I was using 8.1 and I had, at some point, moved C:\Users and all its associated folders to E:. Everything has worked fine and Win10 didn't have a problem. I did notice that there was still a C:\Users, but the only folder it contains is Administrator.

This was probably not a good move to make. Moving data folders, like Pictures, Documents, etc., is fine, but moving the actual User Profiles was not such a good idea. My E: drive is no longer large enough to hold all my photos and other data. I bought a replacement drive large enough, but having my Users Profiles on E: is now a problem and I want to move them back to C:, only without the data folders.

I can delete all the existing data files from those default folders (I have backed them all up), so now I need to find a way to restore the Users folder and contents to C:. I've tried researching the problem, but found nothing that specifically applies to my situation. The TenForums article, "Relocating Users folder on an existing Windows installation" Seems to be as close as I can get. Unfortunately, this part has made me take pause and ask you all for help:

Kari said:

Do you know what I should do? Maybe Kari's still around and can reply? Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you used the Sysprep method to relocate the Users folder to E: drive, you can use the same method to relocate it back to C: drive. The warning you quoted is when doing this in a clean install, it does not apply when moving Users folder back to C: drive which will always be accepted and OK for Windows.

Follow these simple steps (looks more complicated than it in reality is!):

Create a new, temporary local user account, name it as you wish like "Dummy" or such (tutorial)Change Dummy's account type to administrator (tutorial)Sign out from all other user accounts, sign in to DummyDisable all other user accounts except Dummy, the one you are currently signed in (tutorial). No worries, accounts and their data will remain intact, deactivating (disabling) them temporarily is done because sometimes Sysprep causes existing user accounts to lose Start and Search / Cortana functionality. When we are ready we will again activate (enable) all old user accountsWhen done, open an elevated Notepad (right click and select Run as Administrator) copy the following code and paste it to a new text document]:

Code:

Hi everyone,

I am the web masters of a local snowmobile club and our new website is having a few problems with printing. Please take a look at the site, http://www.strathroysnoblizzards.com/Strathroy_Sno-Blizzards/index.html

As you can see it has a black background which when printed on my Mac OS X has no problems with printing (it leaves out black background and keeps the text and images) and prints everything.

The problem is that one of our members are ticked that they can not print the site because of the black showing up above the text and images and I really don't want to change the background because it look good the way it is, so is there any way to change to printer settings or some ideas for him to help him out with this problem.

Second problem is that out of 4 pages, 2 are blank with nothing on it and there is suppose to be text and images on those pages, anyway how to fix this too?

Thanks Guys

Answer:Website printing??? (backgrounds causing problems with PC users but not Mac users)

I only have one suggestion. Do they have this unchecked?
Print background colors and images.

IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advance Tab-> scroll down
to the Printing headline. Make sure it is unchecked.

How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

All of my computers are wired... but, I would like to give my retired neighbor (he's 64 years old) wireless access. But, I don't want him or anyone else access to my shared files b/w desktop/laptop. So, should I put it on a different subnet? Do I need a 2nd router? Right now, I have the BEFSR41 with a WAP11 AP on 192.168.1.245 with the router on 192.168.1.1 (both are 255.255.255.0 subnet).

Thanks!

Answer:How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

I would setup a DMZ, you can do this by using two physical routers or something like smooth wall with multiple nics. If I were you I would setup smooth wall on a crap old box and install 3 network cards into the old computer. Hooking your cable modem to one of the network cards in the smoothwall box will be like pluggin in your cable modem to the wan port on the back of your router. I would plug your wireless router into to the next nic on your smooth wall box. If your neighbor is the only one using the wireless do the following. Enable WEP, don't broadcast your ssid, filter by mac address, and limit the total number of connections to 1. That should keep your wireless rather secure. With the final network card in the smooth wall box attach either a standard switch or even another router. Smooth wall has built in DHCP support and it will allow you to set a range of ips.Hard wire all your home computer to the switch and your in business.

working with vista homeprem sp2 32bit here. ran a quick avast scan a few minutes ago, it caught some small-time junk in the temporary internet files (which were purged easily enough), but it also pointed out C:\users\all users as "the system cannot find the path specified". so I open up windows explorer and try to go there. cue the "refers to a location that is unavailable" error message. now, I don't usually need to prod around in there so I'm not familiar with what normally happens, but I know vista loves to have a bunch of directories displayed that are shortcuts it uses for people who leave "hide protected OS files" checked (I don't, I want to see what's where) which really ought to not be shown when you're not hiding stuff but I digress, that's for MS to be groused at after win8 flops.

SO. should I panic that I've had another thing sneak past the security screens (mvp hosts file, spyware blaster, avast's shields, mbam scans)? nothing else seems out of sorts, but one man's paranoia is another man's preparation, and all.

Answer:C:\Users\All Users refers to a location that is unavailable *error message*

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?

Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.

Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?

I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.

Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

I am a Media Center user and in my home its my only computer.
I use Win7 for Work and Taking Care of Stuff for the Home...
and about 2 years ago I went from a part time Media Center User to
a Hardcore record everything on cable before I cut the cord user.
But after I cut the cord and go to Antenna I am just at the range where
TV Signals arent stable unless I install a 50foot tower and a really large antenna.
But even so I will want to record everything that way when 2 shows conflict during primetime
I will have it to watch when Jerry Springer or Judge Judy is on.
I will also have everything I have recorded off of Cable and I will be Legal
meaning watching torrents won't get my internet shut off
Which means my Phone would also get cut off along with my ability to make money as
a developer part time...
Streaming might be the solution for some people but it comes with a cost.
Either you are paying for services that add up to a higher cost than your cable or dish packages.
You are forced to resort to illegal torrents or sites.
or you end up paying higher costs for internet because it takes a ton of bandwidth to stream HD 1080p to the living room, kids room, parents .. whatever all at the same time ..
That free Gigabit Google ain't no where to be seen... so you will be buying 100-200Mbit plans so you can keep your TV, Phone, Alarm / Video Surveillance online at the same time and still surf the web and update your android apps on your cell...
You ever had Video Streaming, someo... Read more

Answer:15% of Windows Users are Media Center Users that Can't Upgrade

Please check this DVBLink wiki
I used this app a while ago to watch and record IPTV on Windows Media Center. But I think they can do it with other sources too. The latest version can record TV server side so you don't need a Windows Media Center anymore. And now I use Plex server for all of my Video stuff instead of Windows Media Center.
It's really a shame MS stopped so many successful apps.

Hi, There seems to have been a problem with a Microsoft Antispyware update, so those of you who have BOTH Norton software, and use Microsoft Antispyware program, had better wait till the next update which will hopefully resolve this:

http://forums.techguy.org/security/...spyware-deleting-parts-norton-anti-virus.html

We are seeing several other posts with this issue, right now, so I am sure it is not a mistake.

Answer:READ!! Norton users/Microsoft Antispyware users.....

This only affects the corporate edition and has been corrected in the latest MS Anti-Spyware updates.

After forgetting the local administrator password, I followed that guide for offline editing the SAM registry file. This clearly caused a problem, because no I see no users in LUAG as per the attached. All the accounts work fine, except the built-in administrator account which I can't do anything with (if I try to enable it using the 'net user' command, net crashes).

I suspect I may just have to live with this, but does anyone have any suggestions about how to 'clean' the administrator account in the registry so that LUAG works again?

Thanks

Answer:No users visible in Local Users and Groups

Check your Windows version!

If you have the Windows 10 Home edition, then it will not have Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc) included in it. It's only available in the Pro and Enterprise editions instead.

What command(s) you use to activate the Administrator?

And I would like "Open link in new tab" work as Chrome or an option to set that way. "Open link in background tab" is the 3rd option & as a Chrome user I have the habit of clicking 1st option so gets annoying.

Anyone who uses/has-used PC-cillin ... well more to the point, does anyone like this program?

I bought it for "fun", before trying it (smart, I know!)...but it is extremely annoying in so many ways.

It warns you about everything. Granted, that sounds good, but--just browsing the net, it will find dozens of "spyware/ad sites" (and it has always been right thus far), but they are iframes, popups etc. They are everywhere--and a warning for each one!

"Venus spy-trap" they call it. I thought that was funny in itself But really, the one thing on there that is just a PITA: I added two domains to my hosts file, and there is no way to "allow" the changes permanently--upon reopening the browser, their warnings come back. Of course, you could disable the monitoring of the file, but then what is the purpose!

Lastly (thus far), I get meeting notices via Outlook / Lotus Notes. They say these emails are *viruses* because they're in an unusual format! Better yet: the fix...well, you should check it out!
http://esupport.trendmicro.com/suppo...ntID=en-126819

You edit the registry to fix something so stupid...

Ok, end of rant (sorry), but I really am curious--those of you who use this, why?

So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.

Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

Answer:Show processes from all users, with no other users

All users includes not only other users, if any but the System as well.

Run TREE cmd and the All Users folder does not show.
Run DIR cmd for C:\users and All Users does not show
Run ATTRIB -s -h C:\users and still do not see All User folder appearing. Restart after running ATTRIB cmd, but does not trigger reload of folder.

BUT, when I
Run DIR cmd for "C:\users\all users" the folder and files show
Run ROBOCOPY and the All Users folder and its files transfer.

Somehow this folder has become hidden and I am unable to unhide or see it.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Unable to see folder C:\users\all users

Windows does not have a folder All users. It is a link to C:\ProgramData folder, in other words when you run command DIR "C:\Users\All Users", it lists the content of folder C:\ProgramData.

Not much information to go on here, but are you signed on as a network admin when you are trying to add the network users?

When you say you add the administrator user as a network user, what are you referring to? Are you adding the Network Administrator account to the local PC?

I have a buncha users that I have as power users, since the software we use will not work as a normal user... problem is, they can install stuff on the local machine that way. How can I have ONE program run as a poweruser/admin/whatever, but have the rest of the system as a restricted user??

Thanks for your time,
QJ

Answer:Want to block users from being power users...

What's up Qwerty.

In XP, you can choose to run a program as a different user. Right-click the shortcut, select Advanced, then check "Run with different credentials". When you execute the program, it will prompt which user to run it as. You may have to read up on how to make it not prompt for a password each time.

MSDN has an in-depth article on the subject.

Is there a way to create user files or folders that are not invisible to other users. Invisible to mean the other user see absolutely nothing to do with another user. Users in this case to mean Windows 10 "Standard User" Please note that if solution cannot be accomplished with Home edition, please note that in your reply --Thanks

Here is an example. There are 2 user accounts on my computer, not including mine. The computer has a 2nd drive that I use for all my personal data. When I created a Standard User, that user apparently can see all my folders and files. They cannot open them but they can see the titles. I want to create an environment where each user only can see and manipulate those files and folders they create/own. Other than that the data drive would empty.

If this is something you know about or dealt with I would very much like to hear your thoughts and a concrete and simple way to accomplish this.

Again, thanks

I posted this message in the W95/98/ME fourm, but this seems like the more appropriate place for the question:

I work for a company that has a small network consisting of one NT 4.0 Server box and around 40-60 client computers, mostly running W95 with a few running W98/2000/ME. Anyway, two managers here have W98 machines, and periodically after they have logged into the network and used different mapped network drives all of a sudden they can't access any mapped drives and they appear to be disconnected from the network (well, they are, as they can't do anything network related). The network is your basic ethernet using simple UTP cabling and hubs. The cabling appears to be plugged in properly, especially since they can log in and be connected to the network for a period of time. Rebooting solves the problem, but that isn't acceptable to my managers, so I have to figure out a way to get it so they don't get kicked off (besides just giving them W95). I have done a lot of research by myself on this, but I can't find any answers....if anyone has any ideas I'll be grateful, and will consider naming one of my future children after you. If you need more info, I'll be checking this board tomorrow throughout work, and will be more than happy to provide you with any other info you need. Thanks

Hello,
I come across an issue. I have some powershell scripts in a folder. My demand is that i'd like to share it with remote domain users. But i don't want them to check the content inside.
So, when i set the NTFS permission for the users,  I removed the read permission only retained 'Traverse folder/execute file" permission
and "list folder/read data" permission. however, the remote users could access the folder remotely but failed to see any scripts inside the folder. just looks like the the folder is empty.
My questions is if my requirement is viable with NTFS permission.

Hello,

I am working within a network drive on excle. I am making changes in these files and my changes do not reflect on my co-workers files.

We all seem to be working off of the same file paths.

I did notice on my copmuter that if I use the Windows seach there are 2 of each files. Let's call them "File1" thru "File11"

If I search for "File1" two of them show up. I have clicked open the properties and they seem to be the same. HOWEVER 1 will show a different update change than the other IE Looking at the "Last Modified 2:15pm"
This goes the same for File2-11

My question is, I need to be updating in the correct spot (which I thought I was!!!!!) so my co-workers can see my changes, but what s going on?
Please helpppppp!

Answer:My updates within Files located within Network do not show in other users files

If you are opening the same file, you should save it as the same file name and not rename it. this only causes more confusion if you keep saving it as a different file name every time. Be aware, that only one person can work on an open file at a time, If someone is opening a file that is already opened on another users computer, then they are opening a different named file.

Greetings Again,

My file and storage system is set up like this:

C:\ Drive - 120 GB SSD This is my Win 7 64-Bit Ultimate Boot drive. It has my most important Microsoft programs on it. Out of the 111GB available, I've used 42GB, leaving me 69GB free space. I want to keep this area open.

My next drive is a 1TB WD Caviar Black segmented into 3 partitions.

E:\ Drive = Program FIles This has the majority and rest of my programs. It also includes USERs Files. I've use 96GB out of 150GB. Out of that 96GB, 64GB are in USERS files.

F:\ Drive = Data Files. This stores all of my data except for media. I've used 91GB out of 350. I want to leave this be.

G:| Drive = Medsia FIles This stores all Media = Vids, Music, Graphics, Pictures. I've used 80 GB out of 500GB

I also have a 64GB ~ 55GB actual storage SSD drive that is partitioned but has no data on it or assigned drive letter.

Here is what I want to accomplish.

I want to move my actual Program FIles to the 64GB SSD, assign it a drive letter, and keep the USERS files where they now reside on the F:\ dirve

My main concern is that in moving all these files around and splitting the USERS files from the Program Files that I'll mees up my Registry. Will someone please suggest some links I might read that will best help me acheive these moves.

Peace,

Phroneo

Answer:Move Program FIles to SSD - Leave Users files Behind

that sounds a bit messy - I'm a bit wary of the users folders..
all those links might be broken - or at least, be put at risk..

are you sure you want to go this route, might there not be a better solution..??

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7. He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed.

He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:\users\All Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

I've done quite a bit of searching and have came up empty. Before I said it couldn't be done, I'm wondering if anyone's heard of a way to do this.

Answer:Win 7 single user, merging users\All Users, Default User, Public, etc?

Just curious, but why does this annoy him so much? Surely it's not that complicated a system and all of his documents etc are stored in the same place, with more or less easy to use shortcuts to these directories placed throughout Windows 7?

There is a number of private files, about the same number as the user number and the rest (150 ish files) are public.

I am thinking to get a dedicated box, create the 500 users with a batch file and send them the credentials by email.

Also creating another script to move the private files to their home folder.

It would be a simple php website and people could log in to acces the files...Is there any other solutions ?

Hi,

I expected to find a question like this (and an answer) on this forum. I didn't find it, nor the answer, so I'll post the question myself. Sorry if I overlooked a similar question...

I have two user account on my computer; one for myself and my wife (this is an administrator account) and one account for the kids (which hasn't administrator rights.) I'm trying to share some files between those two accounts but the files from my account won't show up at the kids account.

I thought rightclick on the file, share with, kids account would do the trick but it doesn't. I've changed priviledges (right click, properties. under the security tab) to full but that didn't change anything either.
When I rightclick, chose share with specific persons. A window pops up that tells me I'm the owner of the files and the kids have right to read it. (which they can't because the files won't show up in their account.)

Obviously I'm doing something wrong but don't know what. Can anyone help?

I'm on windows 8.1. Both accounts are password protected; I'm unwilling to lose the passwords, also I feel that shouldn't be necessary. I don't want to user cloud services; as the files are on the same computer I feel that shouldn't be necessary as well.
All files I want to share are in the documents folder. I can't find any public folder, but I feel the sharing should be possible without it.

Help anyone?

flip

Answer:How to share files between users?

One easy way to do it would be to create a folder outside of the user's documents structure, call it something like Shared Documents or whatever you prefer. As long as it's not located within the User folder hierarchy all users should have access to it.

XP Home, SP2

On our computer, two of us have Administrator rights and two of us don't. The ones that don't would often like to rename files. Usually these are mp3 files, picture files, etc. The computer won't allow it. A box pops up that says Access Denied. I want them to be able to do this because after all, it's their stuff.
But (and this might be the whole reason) - I put in a second hard drive for storage, and that's where these things are located. They are not in their My Documents files. So the computer can't tell who they belong to. But, they're theirs!

Also, it won't let them drag items to the recycle bin.
So they're always stuck with a bunch of badly-named files, and tons of files they can't delete. Their folders are a horrible mess and everyone's unhappy.

What do I do (short of giving everyone Administrator rights) to allow them to rename their files and to delete files they don't want? As you can imagine, I end up doing it ALL for them from my own screen. Talk about a pain!

All I want to do is share files between users on the same PC. I've tried everything... From right clicking on the file, properties, sharing, and selecting the users I want to share the file with. After these steps the file cannot be seen by other users. I also tried duplicating these steps and got an error message stating "Windows cannot find USER NAME".

I tried putting the file in the "Public Folder" which works but the problem is that every user can see the file. This is a problem, because I only want to share this file with my wife's account.

The windows help menu says its easy to share with specific people, but im starting to loose hope.....

Is it possible to lock these things. Pease reply if you have any thoughts or suggestions, as I want to try to fix their computer tomorrow.

Our AutoCAD Drawings are saved in a server shared by everyone. Certain drawings that I created recently, are only visible in windows explorer on my pc (connected to the network), but they aren't visible when other users open the same folder on their computer. Is there a 'hidden to others' feature that may have been selected that I am not aware of? This is an odd one for me.

When I have the dwg file open, the .dwl file is visible to all, but not the dwg.

Answer:Certain files not visible to other users

Update, I copied the dwg file one level up in the directory and the file was visible to everyone. I then copied it back into the folder it needed to be in, replacing the original, and now it's visible to all.

Help, please!

We bought a Sony laptop running Vista home for my father and set it up for him. Unfortunately he died before he could use it, so I have inherited it. It was distressing seeing his name all over the thing, so I created a new user account in my name, logged in as that and then deleted the old account in his name. A warning did come up saying that he was still logged in and some data may be lost, but as there wasn't much there I went ahead anyway.

All the files under his account had disappeared (including one or two I realised i wanted) as had all his settings and even some software setups. Nothing in the recycle bin; I have run a couple of lost file recovery programs which only find files that have been consciously deleted. Where have his files gone?

Answer:What happens to files when users are deleted?

When you delete an old account, you could choose wheter you delete all data or not and you probably deleted data too.

Sorry to hear about the death of your father.

I manage about 10TB of storage (not much in terms of space) that contains around 6.8 million files and 3.2 million directories that reside on over a dozen servers geographically located around the country

I'm the only one at my work who tracks the shared drive usage for duplicates, unauthorized files, overly large files, old files, etc.

Since the provider of our storage is not "Us", we're restricted to scanning the shares remotely, an we were never given any tools with which to perform scans.

I've seen posts from people who wanted to know how to go about gathering the information so they too can track these kinds of information regarding their network drives, so I thought I'd share my Windows Power Shell 2.0 script that gathers the information.

The script I use differs from the one posted below only in that I stripped out the stuff I had in there that personalized it to my environment.

Measure-Command {get-childitem -recurse | where-object {$_.PSIscontainer -ne $true} | foreach-object {'"'+ $_.name + '" , "' + $_.fullname + '" , "' + $_.length + '" , "' + $_.Extension + '" , "' + $_.CreationTime + '" , "' + $_.LastAccessTime + '" , "' + $_.LastWriteTime + '"' } >c:\outputfiles\hmm.txt}

Answer:Tip for Win 7 Users with many many files on network

It's too bad you don't have access to those servers. We don't bother with powershell for storage tasks as we just use the reporting built in to FSRM. Duplicate files, least accessed files, large files, etc are all reports built in to the system and we just email them out either automatically when a quota limit is hit or we feel one person or department is taking up too much space.

Powershell 3.0 really pissed me off with the variable security crap.

Answer:Users - Deleting Files

Hello sircrump,

Welcome to the Windows 7 Forum.

As I understand, you like to remove folders from previous users.
I guess the filesystem was NTFS?

You might solve this problem by taking ownership of the user directories.

Select the user directory using explorer and do a right click.
Select properties.
Select security tab.
Select advanced button.
Select owner.
Select edit button.
Select other users or groups, and add your user account, and check Replace owner on sub containers and objects

That should make you owner of the user directories.

If you still have problems removing the directories, you can make your user account to get full control over every directory and files.

For this you can use cacls.

Open cmd window, Start-> enter cmd, press <enter>
In the CMD window for example:
Move to the directory you need to change to FULL control.
Example: CD c:\users
Then enter this command, it will replace all permissions on current directory and subdirectories to grant the Administrators group FULL control.
cacls /T /G Administrators:F

I hope those hints will get you to the solution.

Best regards,

zx81

Will any issues occur if I do so, given I'm the computers only user? Is it ok to store files for programs that would normally be installed in user folders outside of user folders? If not, is there any reason to use user folders if there is only 1 user?

Answer:Is it ok to keep files outside of the users folder?

You can install or put files wherever you want. However, the program will need to know where to look for such files.

Right, The problem i have is with some important documents saved on the system at work.

We need these documents on the system for the managers to access and change, and employees to view.

I have password protected the documents so everyone can read these in read only.

The problem i am having is that these documents are Deletable.

I would like to know a way of stoppind users deleting these files if this is possible?

Kindest Regards,
Chris

Answer:Help, System Users Deleting my files!

Welcome to TSF....

Unless there is a way to change the admin settings to prohibit this deleting I know of no way. But you might want to make a backup of these important files and when they are deleted then restore them from the backup.

Also you should be able to find out who is deleting them and explain that if this keeps happening they will be fired..... That is usually a good deterrent.

Greetings,
we have in place policies which block users from running .exe from %UserProfile%\Appdata\Local\Temp but I also need to block these file being run directly from internet explorer so I have added a new rule in the GPO with the following:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\*.exe

This doesn't work could It be because the path has spaces in it? if I try to block upto: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\*.exe this is working fine

Any ideas?

I run a computer room for a group of disabled veterans at the local VA medical center. A while ago I was directed to make it
impossible for my users to save any information to any internal or external storage device. Our Internet access was suspended until I have accomplished this.

I have yet to fully accomplish it. I was refered to these programs for removable media and USB storage devices:

cdromdisabler_free
disableusb_free
floppydisabler -free
usbdisablerpro

I haven't found anything similar for the hard drive. I have looked through Computer Management and the Registry but found
nothing that looked like it would do the job. I asked for help in a number of forums. One recommendation was:

"go to the group policy editor (gpedit.msc)
computer config....
administrative templates....
system...
disk quotas...
there are 6 settings there..."

I didn't understand this approach.

A more promising recommendation was to restart in Safe Mode, right click on the hard drive, select properties and click on the Security tab. This led to the following:

Groups or user names

Administrator
CREATOR OWNER
Everyone
SYSTEM
User

I selected User

Permissions for Users

Full Control
Modify
Read & Execute
List Folder Contents
Read
Write
Special Permissions

I had been advised to check only Read & Execute, List Folder Contents and Read under the Allow column heading. Actually, I found those boxes already checked. No other boxes were checked in either column. I didn... Read more

Answer:Prevent users from saving files

Why would they want to disable write access to everything? They must be completely illogically paranoid about something...

The idea of setting attributes in the security tab is how you will get it done.
didn't work? then you did it wrong.

You probably changed the settings for one user, then tested it on another user.

Do you know how to create a batch file?
If so, here is a batch script that will change the permissions to "read write" and "Execute", for "Everyone"

echo off
cls
set /p pth="please type the drive letter for your Hard drive e.g. C:":
cacls %pth% /T /G Everyone:RClick to expand...

If you don't know how to make a batch file, follow these instructions.

1. open notepad.
2. copy and paste the script I gave you, into notepad.
3. click file, then click "save as".
4. where it says "save as type", change it to "all files"
5. save it as userpermissions.bat
6. now go find the file you just saved, it will be a "batch file".
Once you have the batch file open, it will ask you to type the drive letter of the harddrive you want to restrict.
So you might want to restrict C drive, so you type C:
after typing the drive letter, press enter, and it will ask you if you are sure. click yes, and it will be done.
WARNING: restricting write permissions for the entire harddrive, could cause problems for internet explorer/firefox, or whatever browsers you are using on the comptuters. Not ent... Read more

I have a laptop. Recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate 32 so that I could connect to network at new employer. Tech rep said he "mirrored" my profile between the two user's now on the laptop.

My question is what do I need to do so that if I make a change to file XYZ on the C: while logged in under username1, visible to me when I am looking on the C: from the username2. Files that were existant prior to the upgrade are visible under both usernames. But...if I make a change the a file while under one username, then try to pull up the same file from username2, I do not see the changes, just the original file.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello,

I am having an issue where you can search my personal files including emails on other Vista accounts, and I definitely do not want this. I have three user accounts total, but when I login to "User 1" right click on the folder in question, go to security and look, there are multiple accounts listed. They are: 1) CREATOR OWNER 2) SYSTEM 3) "User 1" 4) "User 2" and the last one 5) Administrators. I want to be able to see/access the files in question from "User 1" ONLY. I tried adjusting the permissions under this section, and I locked myself out. I have since gotten that fixed, but how do I accomplish making this particular folder completely private?

Thank you.

Answer:Emails and Files Searchable by Other Users

Hi,

That box will sort your out:

SYSTEM: Full Control ALLOW

USER 1: Full Control ALLOW

USER 2: Full Control DENY

USER 3: Full Control DENY

Remove the Administrator reference.

NOTE: There is a small tool to corrupt all the permissions of a file/folder, so if any of the other users can hack proficiently, then this is not enough.

Like the topic title says, recently been getting .exe files in my C:\Users\Public folders, they are named after other files in the folders. AVG keeps detecting them every 10-15 mins even after I select the option to remove all unhealed infections. The infection shows up as Trojan horse Dropper.small.PZB. How do I remove the source of this problem as I can only delete the .exe that keeps reappearing.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm running AVG Free and my OS is WIndows 7 64 bit.
