Future pricing for Win 7 and Plans for New OS

Question: Future pricing for Win 7 and Plans for New OS

Based on the history of past windows OS's, is it possible to estimate how much cheaper the full versions of Windows 7 would be after a year? Specifically the professional or ultimate versions?

I'm using XP Pro and I'm very comfortable with it and don't feel like I need a new OS just because it's new and has the latest bells and whistles. My 2 factors for deciding to upgrade depend on price and future OS plans from Microsoft.

For price considerations, I can get the full version of Win 7 Professional for $100. Should I wait to upgrade to Win 7 professional to see if prices will get better, or is this already a price that even waiting won't beat?

As for future OS's, is it worth it to get 7 if Microsoft is going to come out with a new one in several years? How long do you think 7 is going to last? XP's had a very long lifespan, so if it's going to be anything like that, I would consider upgrading. But if not, maybe I can hold on to XP for a few more years for the next OS.

Given these 2 factors, any recommendations?

Preferred Solution: Future pricing for Win 7 and Plans for New OS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I started with a pre-beat version in Dec 2008, then all the differenet versions to the retail release. Win7 will have a long productive lifespan. $ 100 is a good price at the present time. Try it, you'll like it.

Since I need a new PSU along with a GX460, I'm on the hunt for the right PSU. I don't want to spend stupid money on one, but I'd like one with a minimum of 3 years warranty (the Corsair is 5yrs for example):

Curent spec:
Dell (foxconn I think) mobo
Intel Q8200 on std cooling (though I'll likely add a Coolermaster V8 at xmas)
4 GB DDR2, 800mhz RAM
Currently using a HIC 1GB HD 4670
GTX 460 (to be added with psu)

Future plans:
2/3 SLI motherboard
Most likely a i5 750 (though may go i7 route)
6-8 GB RAM
2/3 GTX460's

OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit / Linux 64bit

Drive wise, I have one Crucial 256GB SSD, and one Hitachi 1GB drive. I'll also be adding another SSD later on for Linux solely to use. All SATA. Plus 2x SATA optical drives.

I was looking at around 850w, (I was briefly advised in another post 750w wasn't enough).

I like this:

Also these:

Please note I may not purchase from ebuyer, its just easier looking on one site til I've made my mind up, then I'll hunt out the best price.

So I've three questions really:

1. I've set around £120 max for a PSU. Are the above good choices?
2. I'd like a PSU that will last me the next 4-5 years - Is 850w enough to power 2 GTX460's?
3. How much power does 1 GTX460 really need?

The next card I get I'll be adding another lat... Read more

Answer:Are these PSUs suitable for my future plans

I've got a Corsair 750TX and it runs two 1 gig overclocked Palit Sonic cards just fine, (see my specs above). Of course if you are planning for the future, I'd get a bigger one. Also a good place to check out how much power you need and compare it to other cards......

Oh, you can't run three of these cards in SLI, only two. Each card has only one place on top to put the SLI bridge, so, no three way. You could always use a third card for PhysX though.

Can anyone help by adding to this information? I have learned the following:

Project Spartan is MS new browser, which will have nothing to do with IE. The Project Spartan is a Beta name.
Project Spartan and IE 11 will both ship with Windows 10.
IE 11 will continue to have bug-fixes and security enhancements for older systems.
Project Spartan will not be available for Windows 8 or earlier.
Windows 7 is expected to have extended support and updates through 2020. Windows 8's frustration around the world with both users and companies, along with the forthcoming Windows 10, will see how the public adapts.
It sounds like with regard to IE 11 updates, the answer now is "yes, but no new IE 12 is "planned."

Please add and comment.

ok, i know i want to go multiple monitors in the future. therefore, i know i need more graphics card ram. i currently have this radeon 6870: - XFX Double D HD-687A-ZDFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

what i'm wondering is, would it be the same as this radeon 7870 that has 2gb ram if i just buy a second 6870 and run the 2 in crossfire?: - XFX Double D FX-787A-CDBC Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition Black Edition 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

or should i not plan for the crossfire'd 6870's with 1gb ram each and instead plan for the 7870 with 2gb of ram? would it be the same? what would be better for multi monitor setup

Answer:multiple monitor future plans? $$$ coming soon

The ram doesn't increase when you crossfire, so you will still be limited to 1GB with a pair of 1GB 6850's.

are you planning on gaming across the 3 screens or do you just want multi screens for desktop use?
If you game across 3 screens, you will want a faster card(s) since you will be running much higher resolution.
If you plan on just doing multi screens for desktop use, and game on one monitor, then that 1 6850 you have is going to to be fine.

Sorry, but my other topic wouldn't work for this. Sorry if its considered a double post.

I need a computer that is going to be able to:

1. Play games like Half-Life 2 and Battlefield 2 how they were meant to be played, at the highest settings.

2. Still be able to do simple tasks like word processing for school.

3. And look really cool, if I do build one from scratch I was thinking this one, because it looks awesome and has had some good feedback.

And the biggest thing is that I don't have much to all. Its hard to estimate a budget, basically as little as possible.

Answer:Okay here are my plans

Nice case. For a low-budget system, I recommend the following;

GIGABYTE GA-K8NSC-939 Socket 939 nForce3 250Gb ATX AMD Motherboard $76.00
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice. $146.
1 GB DDR PC3200 Value Memory (Anything less won't play HL2 and BF2) $82.
80GB SATA Hard Drive $52.
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro AGP Video Card $136.

All prices and components are from

Also note, that these are the minimum you need to run BF2 and HL2. I chose these because you're on a budget. There are much better components to run the games. Also, I assume you have the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. already chosen?

Could you give us an estimate of how much you can spend?

This link was already posted before. But I just like to remind you that this is an excellent tool for migrating the OS to the SSD. Paragon is currently offering it for free.

If you plan to install a SSD, you might want to get it now and keep it in stock. It does, however, not say for how long this "test" version will be working. The website is in German, but the product is in English. If you have any problem with the German verse, let me know and I help you.

Another member just used this free version to migrate his system and it worked well. I have used a test version and that worked well too,

Paragon Software Registrierung

Answer:For everyone that plans to buy a SSD

Thanks for the link.

Is the program you used 2 or 3 weeks ago that allows you to transfer only portions of a partition and thereby avoid having to shrink it? The program that costs $20 normally?

If so, I might keep it. I probably won't be buying an SSD for at least 6 months. Looks like I'm go to build a new PC, but will keep spinning drives for a while longer.

Any known limitations on this regarding functionality compared to the paid for version?

I'd guess it would work on any hard drive--not just SSDs?

Question: Ram Pricing ?

Im just wondering why these two sticks of ram are so different
in price. They are both the same except for a difference of 512
megs but the price differs by $150. Im just curious.........
kingtson 512MB===$55.01
Kingston 1GB===$206

Answer:Ram Pricing ?

First of all, this is computers. The more you have, the more expensive it'll get per increase. The bigger you get, the price increases exponentionally. Like of couse 1gig will not be double the price of 512, cauze then under the same logic i'd go buy 2gb ram for 4x the price of 512. But wait, 256 mb, is cheaper, so why don't i just buy 2 gigs of ram for 8x w/e 256 mb cost?

Anyways, that won't make up for 100% of the cost. I think that the qualitiy of the ram varies. So the 1 gig of ram is higher qulity than the 512 ram.

Question: XP Pricing...

Why can you go to google and search for microsoft xp pro and find it for anywhere from 50-199 bucks a copy. Are the cheap people out there really selling legit copies of this software?
For instance...

That is just a taste there are lots of sites that are very similar.

Answer:XP Pricing...

It's possible that they never updated their lists after price drops. I'd buy it from a store though. If I'm not mistaking XP Pro at a store is $100. And home is $50 I think.

This is getting crazy. We are less than 6 weeks from D-Day (Oct. 26) and we do not have pricing on a single Windows 8 device. This was not a big deal on past Windows launches as price were expected to stay the same because the products were mostly the same. But with Windows 8 we are expecting one new product category (ARM devices) and two greatly expanded product lines (Hi power Core iX series tablets/convertables and low power Atom/AMD powered tablets/convetables). We are so close to launch date that companies will have had to roll into production mode already for launch devices in order to build up an inventory and get devices shipped to their destination stores. The Best Buys and Amazons and the like will have already placed orders for launch devices, and would have needed to know MSRP to make ordering desicions. So why keep the consumer in the dark? Why not make some announcements and let the marketing machine begin to build up some hype. There are a large number of people that don't follow technology news that that don't even know a new version of Windows is about to launch.

Answer:Can we get some pricing already?

To drive us wild with expectation and are just one more victim or casualty

Question: Pricing up a Job

If you are just starting out and dont know much about pricing a job, how do you get a good figure a client, and you are happy with??

for example...

networking 6 machines in 6 different rooms to a hub then router to allow internet access.
settting up 6 logins and a small file server.

is there anywhere that gives a guide or indication of charging prices for general contract jobs?

Answer:Pricing up a Job

I think pricing depends on alot of things.

1. The Area, where I live I charge $30.00 per hour, people think that's alot around here but if I was in Denver charging the same people would think that was cheap.

2. Experience, when I get a new tech on my staff we don't charge as much on his jobs because it's kind of a given that he is going to have some problems at first. After a month or 2 of doing work we raise him up to the standard rate. I don't feel it's fair to make the customer pay the same rate to have somebody who's new to the business. Either cut the rate or charge them for less time than it actually took.

Networking machines can sometimes be hard, if pulling the cable is going to be a pain in the ass then I usually charge more than if they have say a drop ceiling through the whole building or raised floor.

First I figure out what materials I would need, price them out, walk the cable run's and get a general idea of how much cable I need. If the machines are all the same and an Operating System that I know shouldn't give me much trouble (Windows 2000 and up). Depending on what all they need on the file server. Usually I figure 2 to 5 hours to configure a basic server, get all the hardware, software configured, add users, setup shares. Sure it usually doesn't always take that long but I would rather bid a little high and come in low as opposed to having to go back and charge more...customers really dont' like that.

Question: breakdown plans

I am attempting to put in place a formal strategy for tackling break downs of pcs on the network. primarily hardware related to start with. Does anyone have a formal troubleshooting procedure they currently have in place. for example I have a pc that boots fine and then without warning decides it will switch straight off. Software problems have been ruled out by returning it to factory shipped settings. A problem such as this could be caused by a number of the components? overheat perhaps? how would you go about tackling this? where would you start?

Answer:breakdown plans

you'll need to supply some more information. Are all your network machines from the same supplier? Are they all about the same in terms of hardware and software configurations? Are they all running the same operating system version? Are desktop users permitted to make hardware or software configuration changes?Do you have in-house IT support staff? How many machines are on the network, and do you have any sub-nets?What is your file backup procedure?Provide answers to those questions and I'll be better placed to respond to your question.

Alright what I need is a 100% no bullshit assessment of this situation.

Ok I have had a passion for computers since I was 7 and I am now 21. I did not however go to college when I graduated as the funds werent available. I now work 11pm to 7 am doing CNC machining work on airplane parts. Its time for a carreer change because top pay in my trade is about 42,000 which im close to now.

So I heard this ad on the radio about and their MCSE course, and i checked it out and it takes 6 months, 2 days a week. This sounds good to me. The cost is about 24,500 which I honestly wouldn't mind paying if the following occurs

I start out in a job making about 45,000 a year
The MCSE is even worth getting, as a start into the industry

so thats what i want, am i on the right track guys?

I am not a noob to server systems although I will admit ive only messed around in windows 2003 as I prefer OpenBSD. The training place said they help place you in a job and all that bullshit...what im looking for are people with MCSE to respond and tell me if it is worth getting, and if having just a MCSE is going to get me the type of job im looking for, which starting out would hopefully be a network admin assistant or something similar, as opposed to help desk level 1.

thanks guys, ill check on this soon

Answer:my plans...and I need YOUR opinion =]

I would look into CCNA/CCNP. Im doing CCNA now and A+, but really any certs will just help you out. Only bad thing about CCNA is that it only lasts 3 years, which means you need to renew your cert every 3 years. A+ i belive lasts forever. Not to sure on MCSE and how long they last.

CCNA is a pretty easy if you a good study type of person. The mod exams are online and study material is on their website when you become a member. Shows your test grades and stuff you need to study.

When i look at the local job market, i see tons of Cisco jobs that need ccna people, they require CCNA and A+ for the most part.

Answer:Check my PC plans please

If you have the money, I highly reccommend an large upgrade from what you currently have.
1. CPU - can you afford at least 2.66GHz? go for 800MHz, not 533 fsb.
2. Mobo - Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Gigabyte is a good brand, but perhaps an Abit or Asus?
3. Ram - get 512MB at least, and PC3200
4. Vid Card - 9800 at least. lol. I heard someone say that SE stood for "stupid edition". so don't get SE. It's the lowest on the "video card food chain".

Everything else looks good to me.

Question: Power Plans

Hey there.

I was wondering how Power Plans work. Say, I have my Power Plan set on Balanced. Now it'll adapt to the Balanced settings for plugged and unplugged respectively.

Now say, my computer needs more power for a task I'm performing while I'm not plugged in. Will it be able to push itself to it's capabilities, or would it stay restricted? How about when it's plugged in?

If I would rather have "High Performance" settings when I'm plugged in, and "Balanced" when I'm not, is there a way to do that? It's clear that Power Plans work even while being plugged in, but I see no need to limit the PC while you aren't on battery.

Thanks. XD

Answer:Power Plans

Hello XD, and welcome to Eight Forums.

All of the default power plans have the same options. It's just that each one has it's own preset settings of each option. You of course can set these how you like though.

Since your PC uses a battery, you will be able to set your power plan options to what you like for when you are "Plugged in" and "On battery" for the same power plan. This way you will have two separate actions for the same setting depending on if you are "Plugged in" and "On battery".

Security giant Avast has announced it intends to acquire fellow Czech-based antivirus software maker AVG for a purchase price of $25.00 per share in cash — resulting in a transaction that will total around $1.3 billion.
The deal is aimed at gaining scale and geographical breadth, Avast said today. It also wants to build out its security offerings with an eye on emerging growth opportunities such as in the Internet of Things, as well as on serve existing customers with “more advanced” products.
The transaction is expected to close sometime between September 15 and October 15, 2016, depending on [AVG shareholder approval and] the timing of regulatory review.

Avast Software agreed to buy AVG Technologies NV for $1.3 billion in cash to add software to protect mobile phones from malware as it aims to tap into the growing number of physical devices connected to the internet.
The deal will give Prague-based Avast more opportunities in internet security-related business, providing it with more scale and an increased geographical reach in both its core business and newer areas such as Internet of Things, according to the statement.

Memory: 2 X Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 1gb chips) = 4gb total memory... $139.98 (with rebate)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE 250gb SATA (speed 3gb/second)... $65
Optical Drive: ASUS Black 18x DVD+R... (writes and reads DVD+R(W) and CD+R(W)... $27.99

So... does that configuration sound like a good idea? Any better ways to get those specs or higher? Whatever motherboard I use, it must have onboard video because I'm not willing to shell out for a graphics card yet.

Recommendations for a case and power supply? I don't know how many watts to get or what brands are good, so any recommendations?

Will any of these parts be all that difficult to install? I'm decent with computers and am a 2yr PHP developer, but hardware (other than ram upgrades) is new to me. This will be my first homebuild so I'd like to not mess with tricky stuff like water cooling, etc.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Question: Power Plans

Hi there,

I recently had to get a new harddrive in my Dell Inspiron Laptop (my ONE YEAR OLD inspiron laptop ).

When I got it back, the harddrive is fine and all my info is back, but I can't change my power plans. It will tell me that "Windows cannot make the plan you selected active. Choose a different plan. The system cannot find the specified file." Additionally, I am unable to change the options for what the computer does when I close the lid. It will tell me that "Windows cannot save some of your changes to this plan's power settings. The system cannot find the specified file." Lastly, before the new harddrive I had a power-saving battery mode. Now it does not exist.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you!

Question: New Build Plans

Okay, my PC recently kicked the bucket and so now I'm trying to plan a new computer build. I'm looking for something fairly decent spec, good enough to play new PC games at decent graphics and framerate, but that won't totally suck up every last penny I have. I think I'm actually contemplating buying a prebuilt.

The above seems to be quite reasonable, and seems to be a good price. A few details are a little sketchy on it though, such as do all AM2 socket boards support PC-6400 memory? If so then it shouldn't be a problem that it doesn't actually specify that.

I realise the HDD may not be very good despite capacity, but my current one is about 4-5 years old and only 80GB, so I can only imagine it's an improvement really.

On top of this, I'm planning to purchase one of these. I would go ATi but it has a lifetime warranty... not to be sniffed at. I'll probably upgrade the RAM at some point as well if it proves too slow.

The PSU isn't specified, but I recently bought a Corsair HX520W. Would that be sufficient?

Overall, the build is:

Socket AM2 mobo
Corsair HX520W PSU
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
BFG GeForce 7950 GT OC 512MB GDDR3
160GB SATA-150 HDD
Windows Media Centre Edition 2005

So, does all this look okay? Or can anyone see possible problems? Any advice would be appreciated. ^^

I was looking through CPUs and Motherboards (As that's all I need to buy at this time, don't worry about the RAM).

I found these (Sorry, I'm not allowed to post links yet):

Intel Core2 Quad Q9400

I want to future-proof this set-up as best as possible FOR UNDER $450.

The Q9400 has SSE4.1, 6mb L2 cache, and 1333mhz fsb (45nm manufacturing process).
I assume SSE4.1 instructions are GOOD to have (should I forget about this)?

The thing is, I will never overclock anything, and I'm wondering how much extra am I paying for this "fairly capable" overclocking gigabyte board. Is there one that's comparable without the overclock-ready components?

Any responses are GREATLY appreciated!!!

Answer:PC Plans - Less than $450 budget

Futureproofing by my definition: I want to fit into the "reccomended" requirements for games over the next 3 years. Not 120FPS in crysis kind of goal.

"Don't worry about ram": I can get 2GB sticks of DDR2 RAM at any time from my local stores, so I don't need to discuss it. No offense taken .

I am doing this in increments though, trying to capitalize on what I have now, and the future development of products whilst getting the best value possible.

My plan: Core 2 Quad (yet to determine best value per dollar now, i thought the new instructions might be worth my while), Gigabyte motherboard (good quality; not DESIGNED solely for overclocking), 4GB kingston DDR2 probably 1066.
Still keeping my--harddrives, nvidia 7800gt (I know this is "inefficient"), 450W coolermaster PSU, case, sound blaster audigy 4...

I realize at some point I'll have to buy a new GPU, and a new PSU, I'm waiting until DirectX 11 to contemplate this, as I feel buying a DirectX 10 video card is a waste.

The i7 doesn't interest me, by the time I can afford it, octa-core will be released, I have to choose when to buy sometime... I have an athlon 64 right now.

The Question Remains

Intel Core2 Quad Q9400

Good Combo? I will not be overclocking.

Thanks for your response Matthew.

It seems Lenovo is running a cool contest in Singapore where customers can enter their own unique skin design for S9 / S10 IdeaPad. While the contest is intriguing, I wondered how broad the interest is in custom skins.  How many here, or over on the S10 forum have either created a skin for their S10, or plan to? Did you do it yourself, or go through a company to have your design made? Mark

Question: Pricing proposals

I have a client that is in need of some upgrades with the current system that they are working with. This client has recently discovered a virus that has created some problems with his programs. His current environment consists of 4 personal computers with internet capabilities on 2 pc's, 1 scanner, 1 laser jet printer, 1 cadjet 2 plotter, and 1 hub for networking, windows 98, and microsoft office 97. I will provide for this client a backup tape unit for offsite storage. Anti-virus software for all computers, personal firewall for small business, windows 2000 for all pc's, and microsoft office 2000 for all pc's internet capabilities for all pc's. When providing this type of service for a client, what would you charge a client and how do you arrive at a fair price for your client. As you can tell I am fairly new at providing services for clients and if I do a decent job for this client it could lead to other opportunities for me.

Answer:Pricing proposals

How long is a piece of string?

You should be thinking in terms of % markup on the hardware and software that you are supplying, and as its a lot you can afford to take less % than if it was just a couple of items.

On labour you need to set your hourly rate, then either go with that and give an estimate of the time to the client, (always over-estimate so that when it takes less time the client is happy) or work it out and give a fixed price to the client for a set number of works/jobs.

Make it clear that the set price is for the works specified, and if they add anything else its extra on top at your hourly rate. Otherwise you can come a cropper, as I have never been to a client site yet where they haven't said "Oh, while you are here, can you just...." which will really upset things on a fixed price contract.

Hope that gives you food for thought.

I have a client who is looking for between 50-100 off-lease (used) LCD monitors for export in decent condition (minor scratches on case/base OK but screens in good condition).

Having never shopped for such a large quantity before, I'm curious if anyone has experience on what decent wholesale pricing should be. As of now, the lowest I've found for a bulk (50+) order of 19" screens is about $60 each - not that great a deal since I can buy new-in-box 19" units (entry level HP or Dell) in the $90-$100 per unit range.

There are plenty of recycling/used PC vendors in the area - I'm curious if anyone has any pricing experience or negotiating tips for getting a better deal.

(If I buy this quantity, I will test every monitor, verify the power supply is compatible with 220/240 volt use and get a LARGE cash deposit from the client prior to purchasing. )

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Answer:Used LCD monitor pricing?

All depends of the quality of the screens,if they are budget screens for offices or schools I'd shoot lower than $60,ATM that translates into about £40 each over here which is pretty expensive for junk:-D

I'd half the new price twice, about $100 to $50 then half again for bulk so about $30.Most of these whole sale places pick them up for next to nothing from businesses and schools so you can really barter with them, they will usually still make money whatever they sell them for the $60 is BS they know you will knock them down a sheetload.

As for bartering tell them they are junk:-D Remind the guy about the lifespan of the backlight, criticise their storage.Speak to them in person Don't act like you want to buy them, start at $20,lie and say your shopping around for the cheapest deal but don't tell him the price you want beaten when he asks say you rather not say but you'v had multiple offers cheaper than he just said.Pretend your still deciding whether it will be economical to buy them or not.

"Its not gonna be worth me going this route at that price."

Remember your not out shopping for monitors your out seeing if you should be shopping for monitors The further he thinks you are away from buying the more he will bend.

Question: 4GB memory pricing

The configurator for the W520 shows a delta price of $160 to add 4gb of memory to the base 4gb. The price of additonal memory on the accessory site is $62! P/N 55Y3711  PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 DDR3 SODIMM . What's up with this? Looks like a $100 error in the configured price. Anyone else see this?

Answer:4GB memory pricing

Doubt there is a mistake. It's all marketing and profit. Most people who are not necessarily hardware savvy will pay the extra money (often without knowing the price difference) to get the amount of RAM they want.I ordered my W510 with a base single 4GB module purposely, and added the "accessory" 4GB model in the same order and installed it myself for 8GB total, but with a large savings for installing it myself. I even called to ask Lenovo at the time of order if they would install the extra module during build, but they of course would not ;-)

For those awaiting the imminent arrival of AMD's Vishera (aka Piledriver, aka Bulldozer rev.2, aka Bulldozer rev. C0), HotHardware have published pricing via

If AMD's strategy is consistant with the previous Bulldozer release, then pricing indicates the parts' relative performance merits in relation to Intel's current mainstream CPU range.
At $US 253, the FX-8350 launches at approximately the same price as its predecessor - FX-8150 MSRP at launch being $245. AMD seem to have noted that the FX-8120 took a sizeable chunk of the 8150's possible sales, being some $40 cheaper but offering comparable performance. AMD aren't being nearly so generous this time around.
Launch is rumoured to be October 18

I have seen loads of stories since Microsoft announced the pricing for Windows 7 last week and I've read several stories that seem to conflict with each other. The main conflict seem to be over the "No upgrade in Europe" thing. I currently have a machine running Windows 7 RC that was originally a Vista PC.

Can some explain to me what the options (e.g. what price) will be to upgrade this computer Windows 7 Home Premium once the full version is released in October.

Question: BT Pricing Policy

I have had line rental from BT on the same number for over 20 years and BT has been my ISP since the days when dial-up was the only option. I have had broadband from them since the maximum speed available was 512kbs. Because this has happened gradually over the years, my broadband (option 2) is being charged as if it were a stand-alone service at £20.50 per month, whereas (ignoring introductory offers) a new customer taking the same services as I have would pay £18 per month for the broadband. I am about to take the issue up with BT, but was wondering whether anyone else had been in the same situation and what the result was.

Answer:BT Pricing Policy

They are open on the phone to haggling, or it seems like it at the time!
Heavy hint that if they cannot do better you will move elsewhere.
The best you can hope for is one of their bargain contracts which must last a year to avoid penalties. I asked for another £3 less per month (nearly a year ago). No they couldn't do that but would give me a £36 discount at the start.
I still feel like someone who has "missed the boat" but I'm not sure quite how.
The service has been good and snag free. If you haven't had a shiney Home Hub yet, you will have one thrown in. "No" I couldn't have another chunk off instead of a second hub. They still sent me another hub anyway!

Hello, I was researching RAM for a build I am planning to buy this Black Friday (Can't wait ) and I noticed that I found some really cheap RAM and I don't know if this is a unreliable pos, or if this is a genuinely good find.

I know that lower CAS latency, higher frequency, and if you want your computer to run cooler, a lower voltage will make for nice ram.

This is the RAM I came across: - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT4G3D1609DS1S00

For the most part (85%) of the reviews are 5 eggs, and it is $10 off with a promo code. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy these?

Also, I am going to be getting the Sabertooth Z77 motherboard and an i7 3770 and I was curious if anyone could tell me if this RAM is compatible with my planned setup.

Answer:Curious about RAM pricing...

Well depends on what you are going to use for the new build but the other RAM looks ok for what you have now.

Oh meant to mention if you idn't now turn of the defrag you don't need it with the SSD. Plus take a look at this if you already haven't - more speed.

I've just done a clean install on my Dell Inspiron 7537 laptop. I had a Dell supplied power plan on the previous W10 installation (upgraded from W8.1). Where are these plans stored so I can recover the previous Dell plan?

Answer:Where are Power Plans Stored?

Hi, a quick test indicates the relevant area (you'd have to explore further) is here:
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Power\User\PowerSchemes\381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e\238c9fa8-0aad-41ed-83f4-97be242c8f20\29f6c1db-86da-48c5-9fdb-f2b67b1f44da\DCSettingIndex: 0x00000258

However, what the structure is for a complete scheme I don't know.

Given that you've done a clean install, I'm a little puzzled as to the source you'd use to recover one.. a disk image maybe? And would it really be worth the effort?

Then I tried to run a game but it was laggy because the laptop is still in Super Energy Saver. While I was playing there was a lot of cpu lag in the game and the laptop was not producing any heat. Does anyone know what the problem could be. I am using windows power management but even when I enabled Lenvov Energy management the problem persists.

Answer:Power Plans Messing Up

swarfega asked: What is Redstone Q1 2016? (thanks swarfega)

Microsoft plans 'Redstone' updates for Windows 10 in 2016 | The Verge

While Microsoft used the Windows Blue codename for Windows 8.1 and Threshold for Windows 10, the software giant is planning to use Redstone for its 2016 plans. Sources familiar with Microsoft?s plans tell The Verge that the company is planning two updates to the core of Windows in 2016, one in the summer and one in fall. These updates will largely be designed for new hardware and devices that run Windows, and will be targeted at the Xbox, Surface Hub, phones, HoloLens, Microsoft Band, Office, and other products that rely on the core of Windows. Redstone is the codename for the updates and a reference to Minecraft, the game Microsoft acquired last year. The Redstone name was first revealed by Neowin.

Answer:What are your plans for installing Windows 10?

I have a dual boot Win 7/Win 8.1 on separate SSD's, on my recording studio system. First thing I'll do is make a complete drive backup of the Win 8.1 drive. I plan on upgrading the Win 8.1 installations, as is. I won't be upgrading the Win 7 installation due to a local requirement for a USB/RS232C interface that will only work in Win 7.

I have a backup desktop for my recording studio. It is basically configured the same as the primary system so I'll do the same thing, upgrade the 8.1 as is. This system also has the Win 10 Preview and that will be dumped after the 8.1 is upgraded.

I have a Laptop with Win 7 on it. That will probably be upgraded to 10, but after the desktops are done and everything settled.

Question: Vista power plans?

K guys,

(In case no one knows what I'm talking about, in Vista (Home Premium), go to Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and click on "Change Plan Settings.")

Now, there are all kinds of options. My question is, do any of these make a significant performance increase? By default, Vista is set to a standard "Balanced," but you can tweak it however you like. Inside the "Change Plan Settings," I saw a thing called PCI Express - Link State Power Management. If I turn off power-saving for this function, will it make a difference for gaming?

Also, if any of this does make a difference performance-wise, should I (if applicable...) disable power-saving for this PCI Express thing, or should I set my whole computer to "High Performance?" If I set my computer to "High Performance," will my computer use significantly more power? It is a desktop if I haven't mentioned that already, with a 500 watt PSU. I have an mATX boarrd with 2x2GB RAM, AM2 6200+, and Radeon X1950PRO.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I like all the options Vista gives you on this, just don't know how much of a difference they really make.

Answer:Vista power plans?

The more power savings you have set then the more they hit on performance so for a desktop that you want best or max performance from and are not worried on power consumption then set the main power setting to High Performance, this will turn the PCI link state to "off".

Some infos ( nice roundup of options )

We're about to upgrade our Verizon phones and my wife wants a Smartphone with a data plan.
Personally, I just want the bigger screen size and multimedia capability of something like the LG Vortex, but the fast-talking rep at the nearest Verizon store told us that I can't even buy one without paying extra for the data plan, too.

Why would I need that, when I can just ask my wife to Google something on HER phone?
She's right next to me.

It sounds like BS to me.

Answer:SmartPhones MUST Have Data Plans?

Unfortunately, the rep is telling the truth. Verizon just wants to extort as mush money from you as possible through required data plans.

I see on the chinese lenovo site there are Y450's with the Ash colored keyboard.  Are there any plans to sell these in the US?  If so, is there a known release date?

Answer:Y450 with Ash keyboard? Any plans to come to the US?

I second this.  I would prefer a darker keyboard on the Y450 instead of the white. Also, any plans to make higher-end processors available in the machines with integrated graphics?  I am looking for a stronger processor than what's currently available in the integrated graphics machines, but don't want the extra drain on battery life that discrete graphics causes.

Wondering if Dell has plans to make a XPS 15 with the 8th gen intel cpu.  I know they have the XPS 13 but was looking for something with a larger screen.

Answer:DELL XPS 15 with 8th Gen Intel CPU Plans?

They'll be released - eventually. Since we haven't seen announcements yet, I'd make an educated guess that they'll show up after the 2017 holiday season - in January or February.

When I plug in my computer on battery, it always set to default using "Power4Gear High Performance". Since I don't want to use it, I deleted it and chose "High performance" instead. But later on, when I plug in my computer on battery again, the "Power4Gear High Performance" plan appeared again! Is there any method to delete the plan permanently and set "High performance" as my default power plan? Thanks.

All my Windows Vista-on based desktops have always had problems sleeping/turning the monitor off. I can usually pull off a scheme for a while after a clean install but eventually it will regress to the point where the schemes just flat no longer work. On my most recent format, a Windows 7 64 PC, I am now at this point. I set a power plan to turn the monitor off after 10 mins and go to sleep after 20, but the computer does neither after the appropriate amount of time. This also happens on my girlfriend's current Windows Vista 64 machine as well.

I remember hearing about the potential for various programs to interfere with sleeping, but I was wondering how I would go about diagnosing which program, or what in general, is interrupting my PC's sleep/monitor off cycle?

Answer:Problems with power plans

I wonder if the anti-virus could be the culprit. What A/V are you using? Try disabling it, for the time being, and see if your problem goes away.

What other programs are there that you and your girlfriend both use?

Hi my brother is looking into upgrading next year from his Thunderbird 1.4GHz to an A64 system. So far he has a friend who is gonna sell to him a X800 for $100CAD which is a good deal and I told him to buy it. As for CPU, mobo, and ram I was thinking of a 3500+, generic 2x512MB PC3200, and a VIA K8T890 based board. I am sure he won't be overclocking but what does eveyone think? He asked me how long that X800 will last him and I said around 2 years but it depends on how the games in the future are.

Answer:Brother's Upgrade Plans

I think you're doing good on the processor and RAM. If I were you, however, I'd go with an nVidia graphics card, such as the PCI-Express 6600GT or 6800GT, which can be doubled up later on with SLI mode. I don't stray too far from MSI, ASUS, GIGABYTE, or DFI. Yours may be a good board, but I haven't had very good experiences with other, well, not-name-brand motherboards. That's a very good system though, with the X800. The only thing i'd look into is the motherboard, unless you KNOW it's good and read lots of reviews about it. I've had problems with my motherboard going bad, frying my processor. The 3500+ is a very good choice. You should definitely get CORSAIR RAM. Like I said, if you want an awesome graphics card, go for the 6800GT. Later on, you can double them up. However, if you get the system you're getting, it'll be a gigantic step from the 'ol Thunderbird 1.4 Ghz, I'm sure.

Win 7 System

Recently, I just started receiving the following message when I wanted to change my power settings. This has not been an issue in the past. I have not downloaded or installed anything recently.

"Your power plan information isn't available"

After running malware bytes, rebooting and running other programs... I believe I have a clean. I also ran scandisc at startup. However, when trying to run sfc /scannow as administrator, it would not complete. Also tried in safe mode.

Hi all,           I've been waiting for the release for the S430 for ages and I've just seen that it's finally up on the Lenovo website to purchase for Ireland. However, I'm a little disappointed because the price is 969Euro for the cheapest model. Previous indiciations would be that it would be around the 800Euro mark and I've seen a link somebody else posted for German website (don't ship to Ireland) where it costs 769Euro. Therefore it seems over priced compared to previous indiciations. Questions I have are1) Is the Lenovo website generally more expensive that other online retailers?2) How frequently or do Lenovo ever offer substanial discounts on their online offering?3) Does anyone know if the S430 will be released to online retailers and if so, how soon after a release does this normally happen4) Is there any online sites that people would recommend for me to keep watching that offer cheaper prices but reliable customer service and ship to Ireland Thanks in advanceShane

G'day, I've got a tricky Excel spreadsheet to build that lists a big range of product ranges and sub-components and their prices. I would like to use columns with drop-down list of options, which then displays a different range of components depending on the options selected.
It's for a modular kitchen componentry product range.
Basically there are two major ranges. (range A and B)
Each range has about 30 or so cabinet modules, with unique names, reference numbers, descriptions and order numbers.
Each of those modules have a number of components to go with them, offering a chives of about a dozen colours, again with unique pricing etc.
So ideally, I'd like to be able do a global range a or b selection, then pick a module from a list of that ranges modules, and then the appropriate colour doors and drawer fronts.
I'm thinking all thus would occur in a single row, but repeated for multiple modules in multiple rows.
I'm using excel 2007
Any help to get me started in the right direction would be great

Hello, I am student and a thinkpad enthusiast.I was looking at the x1 laptop when it came out in the US, with 1199dollar pricing. To my disappointment I couldnt get it shipped to Finland, so I waited a while until it was released in Europe aswell. However, the pricing is very high for the same laptop: 1650dollars! - 450dollar difference And this is with the same exact parts! With i7, 256gb ssd, QHD (nontouch) screen it's already 2400dollars in Finland! while in the US it's 1870!-650 dollar difference   why such a big difference? I am pretty sad about this, and it forces me to consider a competitors laptop.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x1 3rd gen Pricing

I'm not an expert on international pricing, but my guess is that the difference is due to the VAT.
